Retrospective: Illustrated Merlin Alphabet Challenge

Finally finished the Merlin Alphabet Challenge, so here's the artist notes no one asked for! See below the cut for comments on each piece by order of creation. Be warned folks, it's a long post.

Before we begin: credit to @merlin-gifs for the challenge, which can be found here. It's awesome, go do it.

First thing you should know is I did probably 80-90% of these while on phone calls or in Zoom meetings and that's reflected in the simplicity of most pieces -- the compositions aren't complicated, the lines aren't refined, the coloring is slapdash. If you noticed variation in quality of the pieces, that's why!

Second: I tried to focus on trying something new for each drawing. Didn't always happen, but this challenge did succeed in helping me push me out of my own comfort zone.

Without further ado...

A is for Arthur Pendragon

Textures, baby! Brushed metal of his armor, scratchy linen texture of his shirt, wispy softness of hair and skin. I'd recently gotten my tablet out of storage after a year of figuring out where the hell I was going to live and this was one of the first pieces of digital art I spent time on. Glad it was Arthur kicking us off!

B is for the Beginning of the End (1x08)

Fun fact, I did not draw this with my tablet. I drew it with my work computer's touchscreen. It was awful, would not recommend.

C is for Camelot

I wanted to get used to different brushes, so landscape of the castle it was! There are brushes that help with drawing grass; I did not use said brushes and my wrist hurt afterward. That being said, I really enjoyed working on this and it was one of the few pieces I didn't do while multitasking.

D is for Daegal

Also drawn on my work computer's touchscreen, not my tablet. I didn't learn my lesson from B and the experience was even worse. This is my least favorite piece which sucks because it's Daegal so I'm slated to redo this sometime in the near future. Gotta do our boy justice.

E is for Elyan

Oh, I adored drawing this. Elyan often gets shafted in terms of fandom appreciation so I made sure to choose Elyan for this prompt and to participate in the Elyan fest. Plus, I love a good ghost story and figuring out a way to include the druid spectre was fun. Didn't multitask on this piece because Elyan deserved my full attention.

F is for Freya

Ho boy. This piece. I have such mixed feelings on this drawing. Really really didn't like it after I'd decided it was done and very nearly scrapped the whole thing. I had a vision in my head that I just couldn't render into reality and it frustrated me SO MUCH. Looking back, I like it much better than I did when I first created it.

G is for Gwaine

What can I say, he's pretty when he's cold. I didn't stretch too much with this one -- it's my normal drawing style, I was just trying to find a brush that mimicked the softness of pencil.

H is for Hunith

Another one that didn't stray too far from my comfort zone. I was stupid sick and slammed at work, so a motherly Hunith manifested herself. I blame the bad brush choice on the cold medicine.

I is for Isolde

I woke up and chose violence! Tried to vary my figure drawing style a little in this piece but my brain resisted, resulting in... this. Not mad at it, but not happy with it either. Poor Isolde.

J is for Juggling

Ah, this lovely piece was drawn during a particularly vexing meeting at work. Fun fact, there's another version of this line art that's less about Merlin's stress and more about mine.

K is for Knights of Camelot

Continuing the theme of doodling through bad news and shit meetings. Like I said above, normally meeting doodles aren't complex because I'm concentrating on something else. This one was more involved because I didn't want to concentrate on the meeting. I have a few issues with this from a technical standpoint (perspective, my nemesis) but it's still one of my favorites. Tried some funky coloring technique, didn't hate it.

V is for Vibrant Colors

And here is where we said fuck the rules and started going out of alphabetical order! This one was really fun to do and I loved kicking off Albion Party with this as my first submission. The colors were a challenge (as I hoped they would be) and this is the first time I had to do some color tweaking midway though and after finishing the coloring process. Vibrant Arthur, my beloved. This started as a multitask doodle but took dedicated time to finish.

O is for Old Religion

The concept for this one was buzzing in my head for a bit before a quote-prompt solidified it. I adore the thought of more visible, tangible representations of Merlin as the son of the elements, of "magic itself" -- not just sun-gold eyes, but sea-water hair and sandstone-skin. A complement to the vibrant Arthur portrait.

S is for Sorcerers

When I said I wanted to challenge myself, I wasn't kidding. Ho boy, this was fun but frustrating. I wanted to completely illustrate a gif. So I did. Will I do something like this again? Maybe. A while from now.

M is for Morgause

See above -- same illustrated gif style so at least I was able to reuse some drawings. Poor Morgause ended up looking a little wretched here because I was mentally done with this when I was drawing her. Love the concept of tarot cards + Merlin but others are doing it so I won't continue this series.

Z is for Zzzz

This one was specifically done to test out some custom brushes I made in Krita to make abstract background drawing easier for me. I think they turned out well! Plus who doesn't love bb iridescent Aithusa.

L is for Leon, P is for Percival

Quick, minimal doodles of the boys! Mentally, I was going for a Brady's-style retro ensemble cast TV show credits feel. Not mad at it! Some boys look closer to their actors than others (I think my brain broke drawing Percy, my apologies to Tom Hopper).

T is for Tristan

It wasn't until after I posted this that I realized there was more than one Tristan in Merlin. Could have drawn Isolde's bf but I drew Ygraine's dumb jock undead brother instead. Had some fun with dark greys and blacks here regardless.

Q is for Queen Annis

Best royal in Albion, bar none. I tried a different coloring technique here and I kinda like it! may make it my go-to but we'll see. Old habits are hard to break. Also: our queen deserved more badass clothes.

X is for Arthur X Merlin

Oh, be still my shipper heart. Doodled and colored during a meeting. I had hoped to spend more time on it outside of multitasking but alas, work is a bitch. This one is slated for a rework sometime in the future; I adore the concept too much to let it go without creating another version of this that isn't an utter mess.

U is for Uther's Ward

And here's my attempt at forgoing line art. Not fun, do not like.

Y is for Young Warlock

Channeled some pain into this one. Those are the dead eyes of someone who had been told that he'd succeeded when his friend died. That the destiny he'd been expecting to carry on his shoulders into old age was done and dusted before he turned 30. Grief plus the existential dread of the aimless immortal. Oof. One of my favs.

N is for Nimueh, R is for Rising Sun, W is for Will

And we end on this sorry offering. I was away from home for a while without my tablet and I just got tired of waiting. So, pen doodles at the airport. This was a challenge in its own right because 1. pen only and 2. I wasn't able to pull Netflix up for a reference on the fly. Which is why Will's face is obscured and Nimueh looks.... not like Nimueh lol.

In summary: this was a goddamn joy to do. I finished 26 letter prompts in approximately 21 weeks, which exceeded my own unspoken goal of filling one letter per week. I found a good, happy corner of the Merlin fandom after a years-long hiatus away from being a fandom creator. If you did make it this far with me, thanks for reading my inane comments and giving this little project even a moment of your time -- I'm so grateful.

J. Vesey - I've built my dreams around you

A/N: This was re quested by an Anon from the holiday prompts list! Jimmy my love Vesey - “You didn’t have to get me anything.” I love that everyone knows my faves. Please come to me for all of your Jimmy fic needs. I live for this.

"It's perfect," Brady beams up at the sales woman who is currently holding a small velvet black box in front of him, slowly rocking it so the diamond inside catches the light and refracts back at him

"What do you think Vese?" Jimmy thinks a lot of things. He thinks that's a ridiculous amount of money to spend on a ring, thinks Brady's girl is going to faint when she sees it, and he thinks he is a little jealous he isn't in Brady's shoes at this point in his life.

"She's going to love it, man." Jimmy claps his friend on the back and politely looks away at another display case while Brady allows the woman to charge a small fortune to his credit card.

He sees it then, a delicate necklace with a four leaf clover hanging off of the chain. He thinks about (Y/n), his neighbor.

They grew up joined at the hip, reading Harry Potter with a flashlight in a tent in his yard, or in a sleeping bag in her basement if the weather wasn't permitting. Before that they practiced reading out loud The Magic Treehouse, carted off to places they could only dream of with Jack and Annie. Jimmy remembers how much her shy stutter abated as they read to each other, helping sound out words neither of them were too sure of.

They used to talk about travelling abroad when they graduated high school. First stop: Ireland, get in touch with their celtic roots and share a pint of Guinness. Then she got a boyfriend, and then they went to college, and then he was drafted, and everything just kind of got pushed back over and over and over again.

She's his person, if he's honest; texts him before and after every game, Snapchats him stupid ugly faces, and showed up as a surprise in Buffalo when he got traded to help him find a new place. All the while she was with her boyfriend from high school, Rich.

Rich was a nice guy, Jimmy has no problem admitting that. He also has no problem admitting that he finally got his head out of his ass when he graduated and realized he was head over heels with (y/n). It was too late by the time he realized it, so they were friends, he went to their apartment warming and brought a nice set of champagne flutes and a pretty redhead so everyone knew he was doing okay and not pining over his best friend. His relationship with Sarah, the aforementioned redhead, didn’t pan out, but (y/n) stayed with Rich year in and year out.

Until she didn’t.

She called him drunk as a skunk from her apartment in Boston. He was on an away stretch on the west coast and he couldn’t get back to be there for her, he would have liked to. She cried and cried and told him it was okay, they just wanted different things and he was taking a job in LA and she refused to move so far from her family. Jimmy facetimed her every night until she stopped crying herself to sleep.

Jimmy is a lot of things, he’s smart, and he’s calm, and he’s calculated, but he is not an idiot. So, after her grieving period ended, nearly a year later, and she went through two small rebounds, he knew he needed to nut up and talk about his feelings. So, he planned.

He thought that might be easier on neutral ground, so he finally booked that trip to Ireland. He’s not really one for grand gestures, but it took more than a little legwork. Between calling her brother to get her passport information and coordinating her days off at work through various emails with her boss, he felt he had put in enough effort to at least convince her to hear him out without laughing him all the way back across the Atlantic.

Brady steps up behind him at the glass. “That’s pretty, Vese. For (y/n)?” Jimmy supposes jewelry has never made a woman unhappy before, so he hands over his credit card to the same sales woman, who looks delighted, probably at the prospect of her commission.

They’re doing dinner. It was her idea. The apartment is all hers now, so she put up a tree and decorated it while he watched on facetime, and she begged him to visit when came home for Christmas, as if he wasn’t planning on it already.

So it’s over a hot plate of chicken parmigiana and shared stories of their time spent apart that he feels bolstered. He slides the box out of his jacket that’s slung over the back of his chair while she's refilling their wine glasses. He takes a moment to watch her while she’s oblivious to his gaze and he knows he’s doing the right thing. His heart is so full and he can’t imagine his life without her in it, can’t imagine her with someone else.

The box slides softly across the table as she re-corks the bottle. When she catches a glimpse of it she smiles, corner of her mouth ticking up infinitesimally, "You didn’t have to get me anything. That's not why I invited you here."

"I know," he shrugs, "just open it?" She nods and pops open the long black box, and her eyes open a little wider.

"I love it." She's instantly trying to get it clasped behind her neck. "Need a good luck charm these days. You really didn't have to, but I like it soooo, it's mine now."

She closes the box and he could just end it here. Play it safe. But he knows he'd never be able to live with himself if he did.

"Look underneath? There's a part 2." Her eyebrows furrow together and she pops the box back open, lifting the felt the necklace was on. She sees the paper and places it gently on the table, closing the box and pushing it to the side.

"What is all this?" She opens the paper with nimble fingers and he watches as her eyes map the flight itinerary he printed.

"Jimmy," she whispers it out before she even looks up and he's worried, heart kicking up violently against his ribcage.

"Are you… is this." She looks at him with her head tipped to the side, eyes burrowing into his soul. "Are we finally doing this?" Is the question she finally lands on after a few seconds of soft silence passes between them.

"I figured we waited long enough," she looks pleased so he thinks he's in the clear and carries on, "finally kiss the Blarney Stone?"

Her face drops a little and he's feeling white hot anxiety through his body. She squirms uncomfortably in her seat, opening her mouth and closing it before speaking three times before she finally spits out, "That's not the 'this' I was referring to."

She reaches her hand across the table and places it palm up.

He scrutinizes her face for what feels like an eternity, but he sees no cracks of insincerity, so he grabs her outstretched hand with his own.

"We've waited long enough for that, too."

I’ll go with Cadence, my current love

and the other OCs I’d choose for her squad will be:

Averey Moore (by Rhu) and Sage Moreaux (by @ceruleanmusings) of course, as well as Cade’s son Brady Nash.

But also I’d go with Abigael Allen by @missjanuarylily because I think they’d be interesting to come together in terms of personality and their powers. Cade tends to find ways to make differing powers work together in a fight. Ash Mallory @darknightfrombeyond because, dude, she’s a vampire. It’s goign to come in handy at some point, lol. The undead are very handy at many points. Then, I think Annie Emery by @musiciatee to keep all the others who are supernatural in some way, grounded. Plus, her sarcasm would be funny to add to the mix. Annnnd, Nikita Grace your @yourpalmoony. I’m not quite sure waht she is in the Teen Wolf world (I’m sorry, don’t hate me!) but I’ve read a bit about her here and there as she comes across my dash and she seems ot be a really good addition to round out the group.

Outside of that, Averey’s OC squad would be:

Molly Proctor by @cassercole; there’s a big age difference there, but you’ve got to look out for the little ones, help show them the ropes and what not. Plus, Averey could help her with trying to get out of their sibling’s shadow.

Blair Alden Han by @nightstorms-universes; with her experiences through different worlds, she’d be able to handle anything that comes her way. Plus, she’s part werewolf, which wouldn’t be out of the norm of the metahuman world. (Not really, anyway).

Noelle Bamber by @siriussblackx; Again, there’s an age gap there, but you need some civilian allies too, you guys. Averey sees herself a lot in Noelle, with the want for a family after a parent is taken from their lives, but also due to their gang connections. The Serpents may just be kids in Averey’s eyes, but they’ve got the stomachs for doing things others would have a hard time with.

Emma Gibbs by @missjanuarylily; Looking to follow in her father’s footsteps at NCIS, Emma knows the ins and outs about law enforcement. Something that all superheroes need on their side - a great working relationship with the public, and mayyybe a link to some “underground” information doesn’t hurt, either.

House passes gun legislation that would expand background checks

The House passed the legislation in two separate votes.

The first vote on H.R. 8, the Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2021, passed 227-203 and would expand background checks for all firearm sales or transfers in the country. Currently, background checks are not required for gun sales and transfers by unlicensed and private sellers.

And eight Republicans supported the legislation and one Democrat voting against it.

The eight Republicans were Vern Buchanan of Florida, Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania, Maria Salazar of Florida, Andrew Garbarino of New York, Chris Smith of New Jersey, Fred Upton of Michigan, Carlos Gimenez of Florida and Adam Kinzinger of Illinois.

And the lone Democrat was Rep. Jared Golden, who also voted against the Covid-19 package.

Two Republicans voted for it in 2019 but did not support it this time around — Reps. Brian Mast and Mario Diaz-Balart.

Separate legislation, H.R. 1446, introduced by Democratic Rep. Jim Clyburn of South Carolina and called the Enhanced Background Checks Act of 2021, passed 218-210 would close what’s known as the “Charleston Loophole,” which allows some licensed gun sales to go through before a required background check is done. Using that loophole, Dylann Roof was able to legally purchase a firearm to kill nine people at a historically Black church in Charleston, South Carolina, in 2015.

Two Democrats opposed the legislation — Reps. Ron Kind of Wisconsin and Golden.

And the Republicans who voted for this legislation were Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania and Chris Smith of New Jersey.

“These people who were practicing their faith, their faith that taught them to welcome in a stranger, a stranger came to their door and they welcomed into their Bible study, he sat with them for an hour,” Clyburn said on the House floor Wednesday. “The stranger that they had welcomed in had opened fire and killed nine of them, one of who was the pastor, a former intern of mine.”

“This law would have prevented that gentleman from getting a gun,” Clyburn added.

The bills are expected to pass the House but will face a steep uphill climb in the Senate as Democrats hold a slim 50-50 majority and would need significant Republican support to overcome a legislative filibuster. Still, the legislation remains a priority for the Biden administration.

But Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer committed to putting the Bipartisan Background Checks Act on the Senate floor for a vote and suggested having discussions after on how to work with Republicans.

“We’ll have the good sense to have had this bill twice and in the past when they send it over to us last time, it went into Mitch McConnell’s legislative graveyard. The legislative graveyard is over. H.R. 8 will be on the floor of the Senate and we will see where everybody stands,” Schumer said. “No more thoughts and prayers. A vote is what we need. A vote.”

When asked what will need to happen for Senate Democrats to get to 60 votes on the legislation, Democratic Sen. Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut said there have been “ongoing conversations” to get Republicans to sign on.

“There have been ongoing conversations off and on all the way through. And, you know, I think Sen. Schumer was clear that the initial vote would be on H.R. 8, and then we would talk about what might be advisable and necessary to pass it,” he told reporters.

And Sen. Chris Murphy, also a Connecticut Democrat, expressed hope some sort of gun control legislation could pass in the Senate.

“I just think we’re living in such a different world than 2013. So much has changed. The politics around us are fundamentally different….I just think that you can’t compare 2013 to 2021. I think there are a lot of Republican senators that are thinking about voting for a proposal allows them to get right on this issue,” Murphy said, who represents Connecticut where the Sandy Hook shooting took place.

He added: “And we will see where people stand. And maybe we’ll get the votes and if we don’t we’ll come together and figure out how we’re going to get this done because we have to get it done.”

The White House has also said gun control legislation is a “priority” for President Joe Biden.

“I will say that the President is somebody, throughout his career, who has advocated for smart gun — smart gun safety measures,” press secretary Jen Psaki said during a White House briefing last month, adding that the President is “not afraid of standing up to the NRA — he’s done it multiple times and won — on background checks and a range of issues. And it is a priority to him on a personal level.”

Brian Lemek — the executive director of Brady PAC, the sister organization of gun violence prevention group the Brady Campaign — praised the House members who supported the legislation.

“Members of the House of Representatives made it clear today, with bipartisan support, where they stand on preventing a countless number of deaths from happening again in the future. Between now and 2022, Brady PAC will make sure every voter knows and doesn’t forget who did and did not vote for this lifesaving piece of legislation that 90% of Americans support,” he said.

Changes That Madden Needs to Make to Fix its Franchise Mode

#FixMaddenFranchise has been trending since last week on Twitter and for the last several years in the fans’ minds. The NFL is the most popular sporting league in America, and people take anything to do with the prestigious association, very seriously. So, it isn’t surprising when amidst a global pandemic, racially unstable society, and the highest unemployment rate in ‘forever,’ we are concerned about fixing a video game.

Dark jokes apart, it is high time that the makers of this game take things seriously. After 2013, and fans concur on this, the game has been a below-average effort on the developers’ part. It is like they wait until the very last day to work on it and then do the most basic job possible to clear sales and increase profits. Although, it might be becoming counter-intuitive since the rebellion has started among fans, and they aren’t happy at all.

A “new version” is out, and fans aren’t buying it!

Okay, we might ‘buy’ the game because we love to hate it, but we aren’t buying the whole “new version” part. The improvements and updates are nothing but patch fixes and would have quickly been done to Madden’20 itself. The sales that are happening are because of the other modes such as Madden Ultimate Team and Knockout superstar. But the bread and butter of Madden is its franchise mode. And the makers couldn’t stand a chance at success from here on now if they do not lend an ear to the fans.

Making Madden a money-making machine

There’s so much focus on Online mode and not so much on the offline one because the makers can make money from microtransactions in the online mode. The franchise mode, which fans adore, has remained untouched in seven years, and it’s time to make significant amendments. So while the people don’t mind anybody profiting, they want to pay for a product that they deserve.

Here are some changes that EA Sports should look into, to make Madden a better place for everyone:

Give us back the Training camp

In 2004, a minicamp mode was released¬— drills as per the player’s position to improve them as they head into the regular season. Training camp provided for a fun way to prepare your players for the regular season, where an unready body costs teams. Fans stayed up all night to get gold in these drills, but after 2013, we never saw the exercises again. We have to have something like a training camp to get out ahead in the season. Currently, there are only four-pre-season games, which everybody simulates. So, a training camp will be a welcome addition.

Revamp the drafting & scouting

Scouting and Drafting are crucial areas for football, which affect the whole season. Since the name of the mode is ‘franchise mode,’ we ought to have some semblance of being able to build one up correctly. In the current drafting situation, it is either round one or bust. Fans are tired of complaining about this and not getting anywhere with it. The rest of the rounds don’t carry any surprises or respectable talent, which does nothing but create an unrealistic vibe for the game. Since the NFL is famous for having gems come out from the later rounds like Cowboys QB Dak Prescott (Round 4) or the GOAT Tom Brady (Round 6). The drafting process has remained unchanged in almost ten years, and there’s just no way it hasn’t reached EA Sports yet.

Where’s the depth, EA?

MLB, NFL, and NBA are the top three sports leagues. And in real life, the NFL is at the top in all aspects of the country. But virtually, the amount of success enjoyed by NFL’s virtual counterpart stands nowhere close. The versions of Madden released after 2013 don’t seem like the work of a behemoth company like EA. The player’s information, news updates, and locker room chatter all play a role in building and succeeding as a franchise. And Madden doesn’t give us anything properly. No proper scouting, no in-depth player analysis, and you aren’t even privy to the national news (only the local ones).

Customize everything!

If you look at the franchise mode of NBA2K, Madden’s foremost foe, you’ll find everything you want Madden to be. The draft classes date back to the 1960s (when the NBA wasn’t even that great), so you can re-play history. They create expanded records and track everything. You can trade draft picks from the past five years on your team for additional transfer cache, there’s in-depth scouting, and even the off-season has been made attractive.

And we haven’t even discussed customization yet. NBA2K allows you to create a fully customizable team. You can move them anywhere and have a mascot with the name of your choice. While Madden has relocation too, but it is restrictive, and you can’t even name your team or select a city of your choice (you’ve to choose from the list). Even MLB has gotten this feature in their game.

But Madden wasn’t always this disappointing; long-term fans remember how amazing the gameplay and player analysis used to be. There were national news reports and detailed player profiles. Maybe, they just got lazy and stopped brainstorming for new ideas. It is time to get back on the drawing board EA.

Due to the unexpected appearance of a Purple class-N demon on Team B’s last mission, there has been a lesson set up for the team to understand the different kinds of demons of the world.

Some demons are generated in labs for certain kinds of training such as education unit training and military uses. The weakest demon class, Green class, is generated in a lab, based on Blue class’ form, but weaker. They are the demons the weakest Superhuman could face and defeat, even humans can destroy these kinds of demons under special circumstances. They are usually inhuman and attempt to form in the shape of animals and insects, but appear to fail.

The next class, also used in education training, is Blue class. This class is very rare in the wild, and often has to be unnaturally generated if a Fort requires them. These are fairly strong demons which often look like animals with melanism but can be found out by often having a large glowing blue spot on their bodies somewhere, often on a flank or partway through a leg, hence the class name.

Blue Class E is a subsection of the Blue class demons. They have the same blue spot on their bodies and they are as strong as the regular Blue class, however, they appear as humans. They have low brain power and can’t speak or make tools, but they attack with their teeth and often try to kill any human close to them. Sometimes they try to speak.

Purple class is a common class, used in education and often look like animals. These demons are used in second phase Superhuman training; when the Superhumans are newly transformed and ready to take on these slightly more agile and stronger demons. They act like regular animals but have a stripe or spot of purple on their faces.

Purple class N is what Team B experienced on their last mission. The N stands for Nightmare, according to most people who have experienced one (It probably had a real meaning once, but Nightmare sums it up pretty well). They appear as children, often with cold purple eyes, and they have the ability to sing in words that almost sound like a language. They’re as strong as a small child but are often not used in training due to their very frightening nature. These are uncommon in the wild and often appear in forests. These are usually killed by Education fort’s offence group (Brady, Ruby, and Benji in Fort Swift).

Red class is a lab-generated class used in Superhuman training.They are based on the Pink class base. They appear as Ghosts, but every part of them that is translucent is solid. These demons have human-like intelligence but can’t speak full sentences. Often they try to find a way to suffocate humans and Superhumans, making them dangerous to find when alone. They’re easily defeated.

A Yellow class demon was what Team B experienced on their first mission to the island; a large, animal-like demon; common in the wild and extremely strong. They don’t attack people often, even if they themselves are being attacked. They are regularly found in deserted places or abandoned locations. They are often used in military and Superhuman training.

Pink class is a common class to find in open plains, abandoned buildings and various other similar places. This class is as strong as a human and appears as tribesmen and tribeswomen. They have the brain power of a human and the ability to communicate with others of their tribe, but their language isn’t yet understood by humans. Different from most demons who have black skin with coloured spots or stripes, these demons are pure white with pink spots. They can create tools and often attack anyone who comes close, including animals and other demons.

Black class is a very dangerous class, appearing as ghouls; half human and half ghost. These are only handled by the most elite demon hunters and appear in places of mass death or where a lot of corpses are found. Due to this, often people bury their dead far away from civilization, and wars usually take place overseas rather than near people. These demons are very common, but usually prefer to be hidden in the depths of night.

The final class, Grey class, is generated in a lab for training fro elite demon hunters. Not much is known about them besides the fact they’re used in training and are extremely strong. Some say they exist in nature, but nobody can be sure.

Knowing this information allows Team B to be able to communicate the kind of demon they believe to be facing within their missions. Taylor will be training their senses to tell apart these kinds of demons, which also means the fort will have to wither ship in these kinds of demons for their training, or they’ll have to visit a facility where demons are kept. The nearest of suck facilities is overseas and pretty hard to get to, so the fort decided to ship different kinds of demons in.

As the Fort decided this, Evie, Martha, Annie, and Artwin began working on a device for Taylor to use to tell the team where demons are on the island. They used a map of the island and nearby islands and added a touchscreen so Taylor can add different coloured spots to the map so the team can know what to expect when on the island.

the waiting game

(a/n): HELLO FRIENDS!!!!! how is everyone?!?!?! it has been a minute since i've been able to put writing out but! i finished my summer internship and took a vacay too and i'm back to do some more writing! :) i have one more prompt to put out that is taking me some time to rewrite/edit, but i wanted to start with putting out a piece for annie x brady for AGES AGO!!!! i wrote it maybe back in march/april and it never got posted so, i cleaned it up and wanted to put it out!! PLUS it features annie x brady being adorable beans and some cameos from other Silver Bullets members just being their normal, chaotic selves haha. so please enjoy that!!!! :D

Algeria was hot as fuck.

The belly of Silver Bullets could only provide so much shade as they waited for the 12th to show up.

Too hot inside the fort, too hot outside the fort, the strip of shade providing what it could, especially with the sun moving from east to west and the atmosphere simply being one thing - hot.

Annie lounged beneath the shaded nose of the plane, leg bent up with her other leg crossed over top, aviators over her eyes as she stared at the smoke from her cigarette, curling upwards towards the bright blue sky, half covered by the nose of the B-17. Her shorts were filled with sand, her tank top a size too big and equally covered in sand and parts of her skin were either dried out or burnt and peeling. A lot of the others were in a much similar or slightly worse state - sun burnt, sweating and coarse sand all over; anywhere you could think and it was there. Something kicked at her foot.

"Hey, you alive?" Annie looked up and found Francis there, aviators and that stupid hat Major Egan was also walking around wearing on his head.

"I am in fact living and breathing," Annie said, and then placed the cigarette on her lip, "you look ridiculous." Francis smirked and then came and settled down on the ground beside Annie and sighed.

"This was all his idea, if I must say," Francis said as Annie passed her the cigarette and she took a puff, "you know as they say, if you wanna look stupid, look stupid together." Annie snorted and glanced over towards Francis.

"So, any update?"

"None. Absolutely nothing. Oh, someone from Brady's crew is trying to train a goat to stand on its hind-legs. Otherwise, no, no news."

"Great." Annie said and glanced back towards the nose of Silver Bullets, her mind drifting briefly to that glance her and Brady had shared a few nights ago after landing, his eyes soft, his face worn with exhaustion, the slight smile on the corners of his cheeks, "Who the hell is training the goat?" Francis let out a snort and sighed, picking up a handful of sand and dropping it to the ground again.

"I don't know, I think one of their waist gunners," Francis said nonchalantly, "Brady's encouraging him. Either way, it was funny as hell trying to see those two trying to tame a goat. It was a treat, that's all I gotta say." Annie chuckled and took back the cigarette and blew out a puff. Her mind wandered - everyone was hot, a little moody, waiting for some fresh water, or a meal that wasn't hot as anything. The waiting game was only fun so many times before you were waiting to lead a horse to water where it wouldn't drink.

"We get water?"

"Yeah, some," Francis said, "I think Mari and Judy are helping Benny to pass some out. Want me to grab you some?"

"Nah, I can get it." Annie said and then slowly sat up, her head swimming a bit from the mixture of sweat and equally, heat exhaustion.

"No you're not," Francis said, "honey, you're burnt up like a fried pepper. Stay here." Annie pulled a face.

"It's just a little bit of sun-burn, I've had worse." Annie said and Francis shot her a look, even from behind the aviators, that told her to stay still.

"Don't start moving around, alright, I'll be back." Annie watched Francis leave, before lying back down on her back and staring up again at the nose of good ole Silver Bullets, before shutting her eyes. A few minutes of shut-eye might be worthwhile.

"Annie." Her eyes shot open and she found Brady standing there above her. Eyes widening rather dramatically, she flushed a bit and shifted.

"John, hey." she said, suddenly realizing her fetal-position-like posture there on the ground and blinked a few times before, slowly sitting up, head swimming and then getting to her feet, to which Brady placed a hand on her shoulder to steady her, which made her hiss, the sun-burn burning a bit from his warm hand.

"Oh, shit," Brady said, immediately removing his hand, "I just wanted to steady you-"

"No, no, thank you, it's okay. You're okay, thank you." Annie said as she glanced towards her shoulder, at the skin beginning to peel up, grimacing a bit as she looked towards him, "Sunburn that's all." Brady looked at her through his own aviators and she suddenly took him in there in front of her - shirtless - not exactly something she was complaining about or should even be thinking too deeply into.

It was hot. The sun was brutal, you basically wanted as little layers on as possible, and they all smelled generally, not too great. But Brady being shirtless was yeah….definitely a sight worth glancing at considering the circumstances where everything was simply draining.

She flushed deeper, and hoped it would pass off as heat exhaustion if anything as she watched Brady cross his arms, the evidently toned muscles of his arms extending far greater into her line of sight than she would've thought.

"You need me to get a bandage for it or something?" Brady asked her, "Some water to pour on it?" Annie stared at him and then wised-up and shook her head.

"It's alright, really, no worries," she said, and then cleared her throat, "how's it going? What's up?" Brady smiled and then shook his head.

"That's what I came to ask you, but now you have me considering scrounging bandages." he said, placing his hands on his hips, "Don't mind stepping up to the plate."

"Don't be telling that to Kennedy, she'll start a ball game in this heat and next thing you know we'll all be burnt." Annie said with a smirk and Brady chuckled at her words. She tilted her head to the side and considered his help - he was already standing in her presence, he didn't need to do much else.

"I'm fine really though, save the bandages. For a serious issue." she told him with a small smile and he shook his head.

"It could get worse." he told her, face falling to a pinch of worry that you had to see if you squinted, crossing his arms again - really nice arms, "C'mon, let me find something. Hey…..Stagliano!"

Paulina Stagliano, ever-the-presently-always-pissed person she was, sat under one of the wings of Silver Bullets sat up and lifted her aviators, her curly hair that was out of its usual braids, looking like it'd been just dumped in a bucket of water, sticking to her cheeks, glanced at him.

"What the hell do you possibly want me from me, sir!" she hollered, voice bouncing off the nearby metal of the plane.

"Bandages!" Brady called back, "For your pilot!"

"That was a little unneeded, John," Annie said, giving his shoulder a shove and he turned to her with that wide grin and shook his head, "really, the girls know I'm fine, that's what matters."

"You're their pilot. And also one of the 100ths, I'll look out for ya, alright?" Well, there was no use arguing anymore at this point. Paulina came hauling over with a few packs of bandages she kept at the radio station in the fort and smacked it into Brady's hands with a grumble.

"Why you always gotta say it like that? Because you know I'll come running, sir?" Paulina murmured crossing her arms.

"Because I know you like to carry extra things with ya - bobby pins, bottle caps, postcards and figured you also had bandages."

"Right." Paulina said and then deadpanned, "Sir, why the hell you need bandages."

"Not me," Brady said, "Bradshaw." Paulina looked to Annie and then smirked.

"Right, Mr. Chivalrous." Paulina said, "Lieutenant Brady, when did you become such a softy-schmuck." Brady gave her a look.

"Ask me again during business hours."

"News-flash, Lieutenant, we are on business hours." Brady glanced her way and Paulina raised a brow, "Just make sure you wrap the bandages real nicely, okay? No need getting infections in this hell hole. This is my pilot we're talking about." Paulina sighed and shook her head, squinting into the sun, "For Christ-sake." And with that, Paulina was wading back over to her spot on the ground. Brady turned to look back at Annie and found her looking after Paulina.

"You okay?"

"Yeah," Annie said quickly, "just….worried about some of the women. Like usual." Brady chuckled and then flicked through some of the bandages in his grasp.

"Well, you don't have to worry anymore at the minute. Let someone else worry about you for now." he said and she glanced at him, "You need help putting these on?" Annie stared, and then shook her head.

"Nah, I got it." she said and took the bandages, "Really, you didn't have to get these, I'll be fine-"

"Annie, if you say you'll be fine, one more damn time, I'm actually going to lose it." Francis said coming over with two canteens filled with water, "Lieutenant Brady, pleasure to see you here." Francis said glancing at him before looking back at Annie, "You gotta take care of yourself better. I can't be playing co-pilot and single-mother out here."

"I'm fine, Francis, really, I'll throw some bandages and water on to cool the burns down and we'll move on from this. It'll heal." Annie admonished and watched as Francis side-eyed, glancing at Brady before looking back at Annie.

"I will hand-apply those bandages on Annie I swear to-"

"I'll take care of it." Brady said calmly, cutting in and taking the bandages out of Annie's hands and one of the tins of water from Francis' grasp, "Go sit down for a bit, I'll help her out." Francis looked from Annie to Brady and then nodded.

"Alright, then." Francis said and then glanced at Brady and pointed a finger at him, "Wrap it tight, Brady, I don't wanna see exposed bits of sun-burn, okay?"

"Yes, ma'am." Brady said, snickering as Francis wandered away and lied down beside Bessie on the ground.

Brady turned to Annie and then poured water on his hands before opening up the bandages. Annie suddenly took in the fact it was the two of them; it always ended up being the two of them somehow - like back at base, when the night got long, and it was the last of the group at the bar; it was the two of them. The one night the group had gone out to look at the stars, sharing cigarettes, stories and drinks, the last of the group had simply been the two of them, a few glances that had Annie second-guessing a bit too much for her liking. It was always the two of them.

Annie caught a glance at his bare chest in the golden, honey sun again and looked away, her cheeks, if they weren't already burning from heat exhaustion or sunburn, flaming red.

"So, liking Algeria?" Annie asked him as he began to work. Brady chuckled and glanced up at her, overtop the Aviators and smirked.

"It's hot as anything, so….not my favorite, but…I'm not dying so, can't complain." Annie laughed.

"Got that right." Annie said quietly and she watched him smile as he gently placed the bandages on the sunburn and then continued to do the same until the majority of the sunburn was mostly covered, and then pressed down the edges before looking at her. He was standing so close to her, and she was sure she must've smelled like sweat, metal and blood and almost wished she was still lying on the ground, in fetal-position with Francis bugging her about the water.

"Handy-work, huh?" he said softly, "You need some water?"

"Thanks." she said as she took the canteen from him and took down some water, before pulling down the canteen and then looking at Brady, who was staring her down from her angle.

"I appreciate the concern over my sunburn," she said with a small smile as she screwed the canteen lid on, and Brady offered a quick smile, "but, your boys okay?"

"Yeah," Brady said, "Jacobs was trying to train a goat." Annie laughed.

"I heard."

"Francis?"

"Yeah." Annie said with a laugh, "So, how's that going?"

"Eh, could be going better," Brady said with a laugh, "funny though to watch a grown man chase around a goat with a piece of bread, trying to get the goat to stand on its hind legs." Annie laughed, before looking at him with a smile. That look, it made it her stomach twist.

"You managed to get any rest?" she asked him quietly; no one could really sleep it seemed just because of the circumstances, so when someone did, it was a small victory for the 100th it seemed altogether.

"A bit." Brady said, "Keep ending up with sand all up my nose when I get up though, you?"

"Here and there," Annie said, "it's why I was so surprised to see you, to be honest. I was half-asleep."

"Sorry 'bout that." Brady said quickly, with a grin and Annie laughed.

"It's fine, really, it's….it's nice to see you." she said and they fell quiet for a brief moment, Brady smiling at her with one of those closed-lipped grins he usually wore. Something seemed to shift between them. Brady took a small step closer and dropped his voice to the point only she could hear.

"Saw your plane take some hits flying out here….everyone okay?" Are you okay? His eyes begged the question.

"For the most part." Annie said managed quietly back, "I just think we're all glad to have made it. Thought at first we'd be going down somewhere over Italy - one of the engines….it's that stubborn third engine is always crapping out but…." Brady watched her, as the two fell quiet, the tension in the air between them overwhelming and suffocating. She couldn't help but take in a few shaky breaths, watching as he stared at her, their aviators suddenly the only thing between them it felt.

"Listen, Annie, I've been meaning to ask you-"

"Hey! Guys, it's the 12th!" Annie and Brady looked around the front of Silver Bullets, and there they were - the 12th. Coming in, like rolling thunder, dust kicking up all over the place in the far distance.

"Well, looks like we'll be heading home." Annie said, glancing over towards Brady with a small smile. The look on his face was hidden with something else she couldn't quite decipher, but instead he smiled and crossed his arms.

"Heading home." he echoed.

Heading home - wherever that seemed to be these days.

Facebook Lasso has a steep uphill climb ahead as it hopes to chase the musical video app it cloned, China’s TikTok (which merged with Musically). Lasso lets you overlay popular songs on 15-second clips of you lip syncing, dancing, or just being silly — kind of like Vine with a soundtrack. It’s off to a slow start since launching Friday, having failed to reach the overall app download charts as it falls from #169 to #217 on the US iOS Photo and Video App chart, according to App Annie.

And now one of the Lasso team’s bosses Brady Voss is leaving Facebook for a job at Netflix. He’d spent five years as a lead product designer at Facebook working on standalone apps like Hello and major feature launches like Watch, Live, 360 video, and the social network’s smart TV app. He previously designed products for TiVo and Microsoft’s XBox.

“After five life-changing years at Facebook, my last day will be this Friday, 11/16” Voss wrote on Facebook. “Following our launch of our new app, Lasso, a project I’ve been working on for a while now, the timing works well to explore what’s coming next . . . As for what’s next? I have accepted a position at Netflix in Los Gatos, California.” A Facebook spokesperson responded that “Yes, I can confirm that Brady is leaving Facebook.”

Voss added some color about joining Facebook, noting “There was actually a discussion about whether or not I’d be a great culture fit because I wore a tie to my interviews–which is funny because we don’t believe dressing like that is what enables people to bring their best everyday. Thankfully, they saw past the common clichés–because suits and ties are not me.” As for Facebook’s troubles, he wrote that “I was even there for the big freak out moments along the way–we’ll keep them unnamed ”, which could refer to his work on Facebook Live that spawned big problems with real-time broadcasts of violence and self-harm.

While it’s reasonable for anyone to want a change of pace after five years, especially after the brutal year Facebook’s had in the press, his departure just a week after Lasso’s launch doesn’t inspire a ton of confidence in the app’s trajectory. It might have been a sensible stopping point haven gotten the app out the door, but you’d also think that if Lasso had a real shot at popularity, he’d have wanted to stick around to oversee that growth.

Lasso’s First Rodeo

TechCrunch first broke the news that Lasso was in development last month, citing Voss as one of the team’s heads. But in the meantime, the world’s highest valued private startup Bytedance managed to push its TikTok app past Instagram, Snapchat, and YouTube on the download charts. It’s now at #5 on the US iOS overall charts and #1 in Photo and Video. Facebook seems to have shooed Lasso out a little prematurely before losing more ground, given it lacks many of the augmented reality features and filters found in Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok.

TechCrunch asked the company for some more details about the Lasso roadmap. A spokesperson told me that Facebook will be evolving Lasso and adding new features with time, and may test a feature for uploading videos instead of being restricted to shooting them in-app right now. In fact, Voss’ departure post includes a “Made With Lasso” video featuring an augmented reality effect with him conjuring Facebook Like thumbs-ups out of his hand.

As for monetization, Facebook tells me there are no plans to show ads right now. Typically, Facebook tries to build products to have hundreds of millions of users before it potentially endangers growth by layering in revenue generators. I asked if users might be able to pay their favorite video creators with tips, and the company says that while that’s not currently available, it hopes to explore ways to allow creators to earn money in the future. Instagram said the same thing about IGTV when it launched in June, and we still haven’t heard anything on that front. Facebook likely won’t be able to lure creators to new platforms with smaller audiences than their main channels unless it’s going to let them earn money there.

If Facebook is truly serious about challenging TikTok, it may need to build closer ties between Lasso and Instagram. Facebook left its previous standalone video apps like Slingshot and Poke out to dry, eventually shuttering them after providing little cross promotion. Given the teen audience Lasso craves is already on Instagram, it will be fascinating to see if former VP of News Feed Adam Mosseri who’s now running Instagram will insert some links to Lasso. A Facebook spokesperson says that Facebook may investigate promoting Lasso on its other apps down the line.

And one final concern regarding Lasso is that Facebook isn’t doing much to prevent underage kids below 13 from getting on the app. Tweens flocked to Musically, leading to some worrisome content. 10-year-old girls in revealing clothing singing along to the scandalous lyrics of pop songs frequently populated the Musically leaderboard. That prompted me to question Musically CEO Alex Zhu on stage at TechCrunch Disrupt London 2015 about whether his app violated the Child Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) that prohibits online services from collecting photos or videos of kids under 13. He denied wrongdoing with flimsy excuses, claiming parents were always aware of what kids were doing, and stormed out of the backstage area after our talk.

Facebook launches Lasso, its music and video TikTok clone

So I asked Facebook how it would prevent such issues on Lasso, where all content is public and adults can follow children. A spokesperson told me that you need a Facebook or Instagram account to sign up for Lasso, and those services require people to be 13 older. But “require” isn’t exactly the right word. It asks people to state they’re of age, but doesn’t do anything to confirm that. Lasso does have a report button for flagging inappropriate content, and the company claims to be taking privacy and safety seriously.

But if the tech giants are going to build apps purposefully designed for young audiences, asking for kids to merely promise they’re old enough to join may not be sufficient.
