SOME RANDOM THOUGHTS / HEADCANONS ABOUT MAX COOPERMAN

just realized that aside from jake, most of max's relationships with people were either superficial or transactional which he probably just thought was normal growing up as a rich kid who was a "loser" learning that ppl only liked him when he had something to give them.

of course, when he was younger everyone loved to go to his birthday parties b/c his parents were loaded and they always planned something extravagant to try and make up for the fact they were never really around but, as he got older his parents stopped really caring to put on those parties. after that, no one bothered to give max any attention or befriend him unless they saw his wealth as something useful, or just brought him around so he could be the butt of the joke. and the second they got what they wanted from him they discarded him. being the kind-hearted and naive boy he is, he doesn't really fully grasp it until after ryan beats him to a pulp. he brushes off what happens but it honestly profoundly affects him from then on.

he thought ryan was a friend but turns out he was just being taken advantage of, his parents didn't care to come see him in the hospital despite how serious his condition was, and jake, the only genuine friend he ever had, ends up leaving (prolly bc college) and max later refers to him in passing as "a guy i brought up back in the day" which hints that they likely don't talk anymore.

so college starts. a fresh slate. max guards himself with this macho (with a very small hint of being an asshole) persona. he's got a leadership position as the RA of his floor, got two nerdy "friends" that are very reminiscent of ryan and his guys (remember when they snicker along with him at mike?), and a semi-famous reputation online. he loses weight the summer before college and decides to stop fighting (probably caused by the trauma from ryan) but we see he uses hand grips so even he definitely wants to keep himself strong for his physique and to protect himself. though max is still fairly lean which is likely an insecurity for him. the last thing he ever wants to be seen as is a dork.

let's not even talk about how being conditioned like this affects his views on women and relationships. first off in highschool he only gets attention from baja's friends b/c of his association with jake, then in college he gets all this attention because he's "attractive" now and has this cool car, dorm and fame due to the fighting videos + promotions. he's (mostly) only ever made out with drunk women at parties or events that just throw themselves at him but it never goes further than that.

he likely has made himself believe that he should think of women as prizes (again as awful as ryan was max kind of molds his new self with his influences subconsciously. he had the kind of attention, the girls, the intimidation factor max aspires to have), but if a girl were to ever genuinely like him it would fry his brain. he wouldn't understand the idea of someone wanting to spend time with him, even if he wasn't really doing anything. to intently listen to him and partake in his interests. or how much happier you'd look after just going on a walk around campus with him vs. when he bought you jewelry or flowers.

it left him with a feeling he only experienced once before when jake saved him, and went after ryan.

it just clicks for him like-

oh. this is how it feels to be genuinely cared for.

it's not soon after he realizes that you tell him you love him for the first time, while cuddling in bed (he's sure his mother used to say it to him when he was younger but he honestly can't really remember anymore-- the most communication he has with his parents now is the deposits into his bank account).

once the door closes, and you've left for your classes.. he feels the lingering heat of your lips, your words echoing in his head and the way you looked at him...

She wants to go all DRACARYS so badly (moreover, can we have Marta in black more often because she’s rocking these outfits like there’s no tomorrow)

My take is Marta will, most likely, either: 1. Respect Fina’s wishes. After all, she made a promise and Marta is true to her word. She’ll stop in her tracks until that asshole tries again. Honestly, Damián trying to pay him off won’t work. It could even complicate things further (speaking of Damián: as of late I love his relationship with Marta; they’ve come such a long way and it shows: they communicate, they understand each other and are forging a close bond that’s based on genuine, mutual care and trust; finally, the father Marta deserves) 2. She only promised not to do anything she might end up regretting - and she may think she won't regret this (I don't think Fina doesn't want Santiago to meet a gruesome end, but I think she's scared for Marta, terrified of losing her. If anything, if Fina really wants to have Marta see reason, that's the angle she ought to go for: her desperation to not lose the woman she loves and the abject terror that she might. The undiluted horror at Marta exposing herself and paying the price, the fear of losing each other after how much it cost them to have what they have. Fina doesn’t want to put any of it in jeopardy. Marta may be a perfect Ice Queen with most everyone else, but with Fina she melts in an instant. And she doesn't want to lose Fina's regard either. Fina needs to approach this with pathos, not ethos. While commanding Fina is all kinds of scrumptious, sweet, loving Fina might achieve more if she were to appeal to Marta’s better angles, especially given how much righteous fury Marta is harbouring at the moment)

I also keep wondering. Fina’s all “this is about me, not you” and I disagree. It’s more than obvious it affects them both and while Fina took the brunt of it all, Marta’s suffering is no less valid. They need to analyze every facet, see how it's affecting them both individually and as a couple. And it also occurs to me that in two occasions now Fina has, inadvertently, helped solidify Marta's stance on Santiago deserving to be punished by commenting how unfair it is that Santiago is still out there, free to do as he pleases. This very episode she laments that she's the topic of gossip while the real culprit faces no consequences. And Marta, bless her, she fucking listens when Fina speaks.

Also worth mentioning, is that Marta’s sense of guilt about what happened is overwhelming and they need to address it. So is her desire for justice, even as it’s mixed with a profound feeling of ire at what Fina had to go through and her own inability to protect her. I think Marta feels profoundly guilty at having failed to keep Fina safe, as she promised, and it's doing a number on her, to the point she not only seeks justice and vengeance but also a way to redeem herself. And this desire, this need to punish Fina's aggressor and prove that she can protect the woman she loves, is fueled by an ire and a deep sense of helplessness at what women are facing in such situations, of finding themselves so utterly defenceless against a system that won't protect them. Which brings me to the question: how would Fina react if their the roles were reversed? Because I suspect she’d go nuclear as well. She may not have the means to pay a hired assassin or hire a guard, but she’d definitely get creative. There’s no world in which Fina wouldn’t go to war for Marta too. My hot take on this entire situation is that Marta will stand down until Santiago tries to hurt Fina anew. Then it’ll be gloves off.

Can we also talk about Marta’s unwavering support of Fina, now that she has to face the passive aggressive attitude of her coworkers, who regard her as less? How she’s encouraging her to keep her head held high. How she shadows her around the perfumery, ever protective, how she turns her body into a shield when those disapproving women pass them by in the storage room. Marta de la Reina: quien te ha visto y quién te ve!!!

Special mention: tell me who’s the boss’ boss without telling me who’s the boss’ boss. One is a member of the bourgeoise, a business woman, refined and powerful, chairwoman of the board. The other is her boss.

It was honestly so refreshing to see Satoru finally acknowledge what y/n means to him and no matter how much he tries she might still be the most important thing to him in the end. Honestly it was a cathartic moment they both needed at the lake but still 😭 my heart is hurting so much for them. To finally stand face to face and acknowledge the hurt, to hold each other 😭😭 They both really needed that. I might just be looking too much into it, but when Gojo threw his ring in the ocean y/n was able to get it back (even if geto was the one who found it) but when y/n threw the last part of Gojo; the necklace into the lake, he went after it but didn't get it back... it sounds like symbolism for something that I am not ready for

Also, I understand Akemi's reaction but bitch 😭😭 Don't you realise this is exactly what y/n felt when you slept with Satoru. Her avoiding y/n to not make her angry or trouble her, I understand; but it just seems to me that she's making excuses to lessen her guilt and run away so she doesn't have to see what she did to her best friend. Kaidan: listen, everyone who claims Canadians are so polite and demure has never seen one drive. years of pent up anger come out when Kaidan drives. no where near as bad as Zaeed, he still follows the rules and laws. extremely animated when raging, and comes up with the most creative insults.

Garrus: as much as garrus loves to rib Shepard about their driving, he's barely any better. his time at c-sec at least drilled basic rules of the road into him, but he's still an asshole who'll cut people off.

Thane: prefers to drive in complete silence, maybe plays some white noise while he drives. do not try talking to him he's not listening. very careful on the road, hasn't been in an accident once.

Jacob: generally a good driver, just doesn't use his turn signals. good at multitasking while driving, so talking, listening to the radio, eating, he can do it. will gladly take the role of designated driver

Mordin: I think he hates driving, he get too in his own thoughts and forgets he's driving. would rather let shepard drive than do the driving

Zaeed: worst driver here. worse than Shepard in that he doesn't even try to follow the rules of the road. his road rage is horrific, has fully gotten out of his car to fist fight someone. would drive a pickup with trucknuts.

Cortez: best driver here. very relaxed when driving, very in his element. this man is a Saint on the road, not an ounce of road rage in his body

Vega: it's a miracle he hasn't been killed, he never wears a seatbelt, never uses his turn signals, and pulls illegal turns all the time. drives with his windows open and radio absolutely blasting music.

Joker: would be the best driver if he wasn't such a jackass. regularly flips off other drivers he thinks are being stupid. thinks he's the best driver on the road, and he is, just don't tell him that

Jaal: has an angaran license, though I don't think he drives a traditional vehicle. more along the lines of some sort of atv or motorcycle type thing. a good driver, has definitely modified his vehicle.

Liam: I honestly don't think he has a license. he prefers public transit or to let other people drive. he's not that great of a driver when he does though.

Gil: has zooped up his car and treats it like his baby. will not let anyone else drive it, ESPECIALLY not Ryder. will fight someone if they hit his car. follows the rules of the road religiously.

Reyes: Street races, will try and goad other people into street racing. has lost his license multiple times. amazingly enough has never crashed.

Pronoun discourse is just as exhausting in person. A trans girl in my group project for History of Modern Europe refused to use he/him for me because "they/them is neutral" and I looked her in the eyes and said, "I will not reply to group texts, upload anything or share resources if you don't refer to me correctly. I use silence to train my dogs, I use it to train transmisandrists, too." She was furious and spent a few weeks misgendering me... until she realized I was serious and I would let all of us fail this group project because this he/him? Yeah, this he/him had a 100 on every single assignment up until that point and could take the grade hit. If other people can't, well, that's not my problem.

She learned to call me he/him with incredible regularity once her grade was on the line. Suddenly, two words weren't incredibly hard to recall and abruptly, not every conversation with her turned into her lecturing me on how trans women have it harder than trans men. We were able to talk about the actual subject of the group assignment and she was able to remember he/him.

Meanwhile, the cishet members of the group had not struggled to recall he/him for me once, nor had they turned group project meetings into discourse once.

Why are queer people always most vicious with their fellow queers? I'm in MONTANA, and the people worst to me aren't the fucking rednecks, it's other queer people. Rednecks don't condescend to me about how they/them is neutral and good and indicates they're trying their best and trans men have it easy actually. It's the city queers sitting there going, "Rather than just call you he/him and spend this meeting for our group project focusing on the project, I'm going to treat you like the enemy and lecture you." People talk about the concept of a 'queer community' but getting lectured about how trans women have it worse than trans men (because I guess my saying 'use my pronouns' secretly implies I think trans men have it worse? idk, I don't speak bullshitese) doesn't make me go, "Ah, yes. My community! I feel so supported!" it makes me go, "Oh, fuck. Great, I'm stuck talking to an asshole."

Between this, the lesbians I've met on campus who keep making, "gays can't do math or science or history or whatever other subject we're in right now" jokes who seethe with contempt for the privileged gay men, the cis gay guys terrified of doing something perverted who view drag, cosplay, wearing a skirt, wearing makeup or fucking around with presentation at all as not okay/possibly problematic and the NBs who cannot emphasize enough to you that they're one of the good ones who don't dye their hair or wear stupid shit or use neopronouns like the bad ones do, and the utter disgust they all look at anyone with who dares use the word queer, I'm beginning to feel like "the queer community" is one of those things you don't get access to until you're 30+. Alternatively "the queer community" appears to "antis, but with rainbows and flags and ew you think the rainbow flag is for everyone you're so problematic", which is... not great, honestly?

I know this will get a lot of queer people very angry but I'll say it: there are 492 anti-queer laws proposed in the USA, not counting the ones that have passed. We should probably focus on that instead of going for each other's throats and then saying we're a "community".

It adds wonderful twists in existing tropes and genres. The protag isn't perfect but she's great, she likes eliminating assholes, which is valid

It's also interesting how Su Luxia doesn't have an identity issue since she lives under so many identities but I guess she's hardened for the job

For everyone who hasn't read Cheating Men Must Die (comic "Wan Zha Chao Huang" (万渣朝凰) by Shi Dai Man Wang (时代漫王)), this is an open invitation for y'all to read it. Genre: quick transmigration, revenge story. Basically your ex-cannon fodder MC, Su Luxia, is a System agent who transmigrates (isekais/ world hops) into the bodies of women of each world who are wronged by the Male Lead, Female Lead, another canon fodder, author, etc and changes their fate. I forgot how many chapters of the manhua there are presently but I believe the freshest ones that are still being updated in Mandarin Chinese are over 700+ chapters of art. (The MTL offers English translation, but y'all can also peep at other sites for ENG fantranslations.)

There are a couple of different summaries but I love this summary the best:

Don't you think that all cheating sc*m need to die? Su Luxia, an intern pro working in a transmigration agency, doesn't believe in that. For her, all cheating bastards need to rot in hell before they die. Or else they won't suffer the taste of their own medicine! Using elaborate means, she beats up countless cheating bastards and b*tches. Su Luxia sneers... "People take everything they get for granted. The more they get, the more they don't strive for it. I had a response ready for ya the day I saw this in my inbox and literally typed a long essay with links, but lo and behold tumblr ate it. 😭 But finally I have the motivation for a take 2. Honestly the manhua is a guilty pleasure of mine. The art's great (we definitely see the artist improve over time with each arc...even with the obviously borrowed assets and sometimes janky perspective, hahaha) and I love how Su Luxia is a badass femme fatale (white lotus & green tea b*tch), as well as her friendship with her cute talking hamster System. I also love how the artist is giving variety; it's not all just kicking butt, chewing bubble gum, finding romance. She's become an empress, made a friendship with the exorcist Female Lead, become a mother, led revolutions, survived a death game, became a guy, made a Male Lead yandere and obsess over her to the point of trying to hunt her down in whichever world it is, has some...questionable sapphic overtones, transmigrated into a BL novel, revisited some worlds with reoccurring characters, etc. They satirize a lot of preexisting tropes, and I love it when artists and writers have fun with the meta. I also like how they're slowly expanding on the lore of her interest with previous System agent Zero (the whole reason why Su Luxia became a System agent).

The thing about QTs in general is the artist or author usually don't put much emphasis on the consequences of transmigrating so many times into other people's bodies. It's just a staple of the genre (because they're usually portrayed as badass, cunning, and OP, what have you with a strong willpower to assume all these identities, overcome challenges, and not experience dysphoria). So far I think the only writer I can think of off the top of my head that addresses it is: The Exhausting Reality of Novel Transmigration (novel / manhwa). I highly rec it. So far it is one of the few works where they explore that concept of how mentally exhausting it is adopting another person's identity as well as the consequences of "the characters" finding out (it's not your usual "oh, you hopped into my dead daughter's body and assumed her identity? Well la de dah, guess you're my daughter now." No, we're talking about the mother suspecting, finding out, being horrified, and having a mental breakdown trying to exorcise "the evil spirit" who's taken possession of her daughter's body). It also touches on the danger of an ordinary woman transmigrating into the body of a Female Lead in an R18+ novel where the Male Lead is a yandere.

I personally like the headcanon that both Lilith and Adam were made with both parts, you know, equal-

Eve was made with one set because to Heaven Lilith and Adam were prototypes, and Lilith didn't work out so Eve was changed.

I like the idea that because Lilith and Adam never had sex, so she has no idea that he to also has both sets, so through out time everyone thought Adam just had a dick. That really got drilled in when Lilith and Lucifer met and had sex with Eve.

So it wasn't until Adam respawned as a sinner, and spent more time with Lucifer (Adams still not thrilled about that), that Lucifer notices that Adam goes through all the normal woman things, like having a period and ovulation.

Luci makes fun of him at first, thinking it's a punishment from hell, it's not until Adam snaps at him that he is just in shocked silence. Extra points if everyone else at the hotel hears. Adams loud, and he doesn't care who knows 🤷.

TMI: Alec and Magnus. okay so this is for both obvious reasons (fan favourite) and some other personal ones. Living where i do, i had no idea you could like the same gender as yourself or ltr anything about the LGBTQ+ community at all. These two were the first gay ship i had EVER read and they are what lead me to be as confident in my sexuality as i am right now. they introduced me to the concept of thinking beyond what i was told or shown by the people that surround me and look into the world the right way, without projecting judgement. i love them for that. theyre my comfort characters and the one of the biggest reasons i am who i am right now. also magnus is pr much why i adore glitter and i manage to put it on my face every other day ahaha

TDA: Diana n Gwynn. a very, very close second is Mark n Cristina n Keiran. but about Diana and Gwynn, they literally have my entire soul im not even kidding you. Gwyn is the first person Diana opens up to about her transition and its honestly so heartwarming that Gwyn, the leader of the Wild Hunt, known to be vicious and feared by faerie, is literally just there for her to lean on. He supports her and is so, so calm and soft with her it genuinely melts me. like, this man is basically the reaper of souls and he rides a magnificent steed into the night but hes so gentle with Diana. obviously my obsession w them is reinforced by the fact that the FIRST time Gwynn sees Diana he goes 'O' and is all like 'HELLO my fair lady beautiful one gorgeous strong lovely lady' and gives her an acorn like 'call me ;)' and diana my love just, THROWS the acorn to julian and emma and goes 'do w that whatever u will' and acts like she doesnt care and when they call on gwyn he comes to help nd immediately goes '...THAT WASNT FOR YOU but ig i'll help bc ur the magnificent lady's brats :/'

• I think Alice was definitely unhappy and dissapointed when she saw she had a girl. She basically threw a fit, wouldn't hold her, wouldn't feed her, wouldn't even name her. She's a Chicago Wife, all her plans involved a boy, her whole life basically revolved around having an Heir. A girl is only a bargaining chip; now she'll have to wait even more to try again. Rhett was the complete opposite. He was sorta excited about the baby in general? He too expected a boy, its the way his whole life has been arranged- a daughter completely demolishes the plan. A daughter he can spoil. A daughter he can love without having to train. A daughter can be only his, at least for now, not the business'. He calls her Mina because he'd watched Dracula the other night and he'd only ever thought of male names so... it works.

• He eventually does have a boy. He loves his son of course. But things are not the same- everyone loves his son. His parents, his wife, his men. Mina is loved too, but it's always tinged with the slightest bitterness... no one can forget she was born first. Alice never fully warms up to her, he knows, only pays attention to her education, manners and makes passing comments about how she'll make a good match if she grows up pretty. It makes Rhett twitch.

• But of course Mina grows up gorgeous- it doesn't take long for people - boys - to notice. And Rhett isn't dumb, Mina would be a catch even if she were hideous, but he's never been unaware of just how ruthless his city can be to the women in his world, how uncaring. A man older than Rhett, one of his father's men that stuck around enough to make himself a fortune moving drugs, makes a passing joke about how Mina is his best investment yet, leering eyes focused on his eleven year old quietly eating at the table, and Alice agrees with a giggle. Rhett kills him himself that same night.

• But he had a point, and now Rhett can't stop seeing it. Boys in high school, in college, men his own age and older looking at his baby like they're...waiting. Like the second she 'becomes a woman' she'll be up for sale and they're all thinking up the different ways they can purchase her. Women in the Chicago Outfit are little more than accessories and maybe Rhett is an asshole for not seeing it until it affected his daughter but sue him, he doesn't want that for her.

• One day everything goes wrong. One day he wasn't looking and one of his men betrayed him, his right hand died and now he's got a war on his hands and he has to make a decision. Gather up his allies and think of something. He keeps his son close, Alice refuses to leave her precious boy and talk around fourteen year old Mina is bad enough he has to make a decision.

• Charm honestly thought he was kidding all those years ago. Yeah, betrothal still happen in their world but outright arranging one is kinda... old fashioned? These days you just gently nudge your kids in the right direction and they get the idea. But no, Rhett hasn't been subtle about anything in his life. So of course she's on a phone call with him talking about debts and loyalty and his daughter and her son at three am. "You're the only person I can trust with this, with her" he says. And okay, sure. His daughter can come stay with them until things settle down in Chicago. Yes, per their contract years ago, New York will back him up.

• Mina's stay in New York lasts about a year. Her father is the only one that calls her- her mother is happily living out the fantasy where she doesn't exist. Her brother mostly texts her memes when she asks him if he's okay so she knows he's not and she's just... isolated. She isn't from New York, but she can't be from Chicago either... and apparently one day she'll marry the boy who also lives in the penthouse? Honestly she doesn't even see him most of the time (which is a shame because he's two years older than her and just as hot as his dad but whatever) Mina is pretty sure he's knee deep into his training and too busy to deal with the weird girl that just showed up one day in the middle of the night. Mr Barnes is never there either, training his son or helping her father with his war, nor is his wife, the only woman her dad has ever spoken with true respect in his voice. They're both super nice to her, though. Overwhelmingly so- she isn't this used to someone other than her dad caring so much about how she's feeling or if she needs anything. They insist she never eat dinner alone, ask her about the online classes she's attending and they LISTEN when she answers.

• So her temporary guardians are great, her fiancee is far from one of the creepy boys from back home and the city is new and exciting... but her favorite part is the Barnes' daughter. Mina isn't used to being friends with girls her age, she's grown accustomed to being a friendly acquaintance and to keep any other girl at arm's length because they could turn into an enemy the second they feel like it; the friends her brother makes are the ones that matter, they'll be the powerful ones one day, at least that's what her mother says, so Mina isn't that well versed in the whole friendship thing.

• But the Barnes' daughter could give a shit about that, apparently. She's beautiful, confident and she'll inherit her mother's territory one day, so of course she felt no issue bursting into her room one day and introducing herself before announcing they would be best friends and did she want to get milkshakes?

"No, like seriously," Mina complains in the middle of a party they snuck into. "I think he hates me." She sips her drink and ignores the way the boy she's supposed to marry glares at her. (He's actually glaring at all the other guys trying to get her attention.)

"I'm not that thrilled about basically being sold either, but you don't see me being a bitch about it," she informs her friend when she watches him get knocked down in a fight because ofc the first time he gets the nerve to talk to her is just before the definitive cage match of his life and of course the prospect of talking to the beautiful girl that lives in his house, that his parents adore and his sister can't stop talking about is actually more terrifying than losing the fight so of course his dumbass jumps in the ring before time and nearly loses. (He wins the fight anyways, but Mina thinks he literally would rather get beat up than have to put up with her so yeah).

the more I think about it the more I think I desperately need a fic of Elliot jumping to defend Liv from Amanda

Honestly only you and maybe one or two other specific writers could do justice to this idea.

And I really wish they wouldn’t push this notion of Liv and Rollins being besties in the traditional sense. I know that friends don’t have to be perfect and can be messy but my goodness. The way that they say they are friends and yet the disrespect especially from Rollins. Liv isn’t the best either but there is an ick on how Rollins puts her down sometimes. Mocking her for going to therapy after Lewis, shit talking and skipping her ceremony when Liv became lieutenant, just eye rolling and ignoring an experienced person’s advice on certain matters/situations.

It's one of those things where like....I like when characters are messy and complicated and imperfect. I like it even more when women get to be sort of shitty, bc we have so many examples of male characters who are shitty but not villains - like house for example - and women are so rarely allowed to be mean without immediately being punished by the narrative. Amanda is sort of fundamentally a dirtbag, and that's interesting and really fun to play with, but the other characters - the narrative itself - doesn't react to her that way. Cuddy and Wilson knew House was a dick and they told him so; they could still care for him even when he was being an absolute asshole. But Liv and Carisi don't tell Amanda she's a dick. They don't react to her like she's an asshole. And that strikes a discordant note for me. It's one of those things where I think the real life connections of the actors - m obviously loves Kelli - color the narrative in ways that don't actually work with the story they're telling.

On a meta level it works for both Liv and Carisi; of course Liv, who never lets go of anything, who hates change, doesn't like being vulnerable, and lives in fear of everyone abandoning her, continues to hold on to a friend who doesn't treat her well; Liv has so few friends to begin with, and she and Amanda have been through so much together, she's not going to want to lose that relationship, even when Amanda does stuff like ghost her for no reason - at least Elliot had a reason that Olivia could understand!! - and not only hide her pregnancy but force Carisi to do the same. And Carisi has been waiting for Amanda for so long, lost so much time, really won't have another chance to be a father the way he wants to, isn't young enough to contemplate starting over, of course he makes excuses for her when she chooses her career over their family, disappears and leaves him alone. He finally got everything he wanted and it's bitter, maybe, but it's his, and he's not letting go of it.

That's all there, just beneath the surface, I just wish sometimes that it was more text than subtext. Which is why I'd love Elliot's take on all this; an outsider, who doesn't have Liv and Carisi's baggage, witnessing all of this and kind of calling Amanda on her shit the way Liv and Carisi won't.

With your tonal language I can’t tell if you are exaggerating or genuinely hating Yakou.

My relationship with Yakou is complicated, in large part because his creator and I have very different sets of values. Yakou is a character designed to be complicated, but to leave you with an ultimately positive feeling towards him. He's a man haunted by his past, but also one with strong enough values and convictions that he can serve as something of a role model nonetheless.

My issue with Yakou is that a lot of the things that are designated as his flaws - his heavy drinking and willingness to murder - are things I don't have a problem with. Meanwhile, the things that are designated as his virtues? Well....

Kazutaka Kodaka is a man with profoundly heteronormative views on gender that come out in his work. He has strong opinions about binary masculinity and femininity, which get expressed in his writing - and his record with trans and non-binary characters is spotty.

With Yakou, this comes out as a sort of inadvertent foot-in-mouth syndrome, where he can become incredibly obnoxious in the moments where he's meant to be likable simply as a consequence of what Kodaka thinks are good values.

Yakou and Desuhiko are the two characters through which Kodaka explores masculinity. Fubuki, Yuma, Kurumi, and Vivia all have genders, but their stories aren't about gender. Halara, meanwhile, has neither a binary gender nor a story about gender. But Yakou and Desuhiko have masculinity itself as a major topic of conversation.

Which. Means. Kodaka, a guy with spotty views on gender, uses these characters to talk about gender. That's. Okay.

Desuhiko is used as a negative portrayal of masculinity. His worst traits are derived from trying too hard to express his masculinity. He's a kid with low self-esteem chafing under the yoke of trying to live up to a cultural standard, to earn respect by Doing The Thing whether he even understands why he's doing it or not.

This leaves him drifting through life constantly exclaiming "HAVE I MENTIONED HOW STRAIGHT AND NORMAL I AM!? OH BOY I SURE DO LOVE WOMEN!" to everyone he meets. He's identified The Womenz as the cure for his insecurity, even though he doesn't actually seem that invested and is honestly surprisingly chaste. He's just performing masculinity, hoping he'll get an A+ grade in Manliness and that maybe that will finally give him value as a person.

For as much as I dunk on Desuhiko, this is a fairly good commentary on what a patriarchal and heteronormative society does to insecure boys.

But then we have Yakou. He offers the counterpoint, as a more positive portrayal of masculinity. But. Like. His central thesis isn't that different from Desuhiko's. He's a romantic at heart who's central thesis is that the true measure of a man is defined by his relationship to a woman.

He's the heteronormative ideal: A man who controls his emotions, loves with all his heart, objectifies women to demonstrate a healthy sexuality but is committed in his heart of hearts to this one woman, who he would give his life for without question. He would be happily married with a white picket fence and 2.5 kids if not for this one asshole who stole his woman from him.

The moments where you're meant to roll your eyes and chuckle at Desuhiko are when he's trying to express masculinity. And the moments where you're meant to like Yakou are, similarly, moments when he's successfully expressing masculinity.

But the values he expresses in those moments? The things that come out of his mouth that are meant to make you appreciate him more? They're things like "Men exist just for women" and "You'd be prettier if you smiled more", confidently asserted in what's supposed to be a touching moment of emotionally connecting with the player character and, by extension, the player.

Most of the time when I'm dunking on Yakou, it's just for fun. He's far from my favorite character but he's harmless, and there are things I do enjoy about him. But the moments Kodaka writes when he's trying to make Yakou look good are the times when I can't fucking stand him at all.

I had spent the whole day doing everything possible to make ya happy. Shit was confusing; other women would be wagging their tails endlessly and drooling to be given and even do half of all we did today. So why were you so damn annoying and different about it? And why did I kind of like that about ya? Fine, whatever, be difficult. You won't see me crack. At least, that's what I initially thought... damn it. My sneaky stare found its way away from you and out the window by my side, and a sudden achin' feeling clutched at my heart. I started to get consumed in my thoughts, glaring at my own reflection. I always knew I could be an abrasive asshole. It wasn't completely my fault. Fight or flight became the air I breathe to survive. If words couldn't do it then money could. If I wanted anything I desired, I got it. One way or another. People, or should I say royalty, were money hungry dogs; greed pulsed through the veins. If you showed an ounce of emotion or weakness, you'd be broken down and stripped bare for the world to see. But not me, I wouldn't allow it. It's definitely interesting. In one of my discussions of Jaehaerys and Rhaenys, it was pointed out that it seems Jaehaerys takes everyone - likely including Baelon - completely by surprise, likely on purpose. It fits with the timeline established here; Aemon and Corlys are off in Tarth so Rhaenys is alone at home and pregnant with no one to support her claim besides herself, Jocelyn, and Alysanne and Jaehaerys doesn't have to listen to any of them. Then you have Baelon who may or may not have been suffering an intense amount of grief from the loss of Aemon (and honestly, probably Alyssa as well - it's been eight years but I can't imagine spending eight years grieving and raising your kids only for your brother to die in a freak accident and suddenly you're crown prince is easy to deal with, may even bring some old grief bubbling back up). It's even possible that Baelon wanted to say no but felt he had no choice because Jaehaerys did this whole ceremony in public right as Baelon was getting back from Tarth. And of course, we don't know how Aemon was talking about Rhaenys - she's named after a conqueror, Aemon and Jocelyn never have any other children (it's not even mentioned that they had miscarriages, they just straight up stop at Rhaenys while Alyssa is popping out sons left and right), Alysanne refers to Rhaenys as the future queen. It's possible Aemon argued with Jaehaerys over Rhaenys and didn't tell Rhaenys (wanting to protect her from the fact that her grandfather is an asshole, perhaps) or that it was well known that Aemon and Jaehaerys fought over succession but the gossip was purposefully suppressed and left out of F&B by gyldayn.

What's extra interesting about this is that there's no other example of what the hell you even do in this situation in ASOIAF. Aegon II is born after Rhaenyra is named but Viserys purposefully snubs Aegon because he doesn't like his younger kids. Meanwhile Viserys II is the younger sibling of Aegon II so that doesn't disrupt anything. The closest example we have is actually a future plot point in the books aka whatever the hell is going to happen with the succession in Winterfell, because Jon, Sansa, and maybe Arya and Rickon are getting there before Bran (and even then, you don't have that added issue of, idk, Jon maliciously usurps Bran because he believes a disabled person can't rule, and also usurped like four other disabled people earlier for the same reason so we know it's a pattern of his). So what do you do when the older, former crown prince shows up not just alive and well but incredibly pissed off that his daughter was passed over?

We don't have a lot of Aemon's personality in the books, just little hints here and there. He's known to be cautious but curious. He's incredibly close to Baelon and Alyssa, seems to have been rather in love with Jocelyn. He's known to have been obedient and worked as master of laws. He claimed Caraxes when he was 17, after he's married and named crown prince officially, and he and jocelyn have their first child when he's nineteen years old and jocelyn is a whopping 20 years old (very old considering Alysanne is like 15 when she first gets pregnant and more than one Targaryen girl is like 13). He is well loved by the smallfolk, as much as Baelon the Brave is. And what works in his favor is that Jaehaerys clearly loved and adored his two oldest sons and was devastated by their loss. So when Aemon shows up again, I think it's more likely Jaehaerys is forced to take him seriously. We have the Rogar/Alyssa situation as evidence for this - Jaehaerys clearly values the opinions, input, and intelligence of men over women, even the women of his own family, even the women that support him over those men.

What I think is likely here is that

Baelon backs whatever it is Aemon wants -> I certainly have my suspicions over the type of person Baelon is, but a younger brother cannot usurp his older brother simply because he doesn't like his vibes. Maegor never manages to usurp Aenys after all; it took Aenys' death and Aegon the Uncrowned being under siege at Crakehall for Maegor to get the opportunity to acclaim himself King (and I think it's crucial here that Maegor is Visenya's first born if not Aegon's). Especially given that Aemon isn't all that old; it just seems likely Baelon will agree out of guilt and grief to what Aemon wants out of the succession.

Aemon decides to build an actual case for Rhaenys to inherit and publicly goes against his father -> We know he's cautious, curious, loves his family, and worked as master of laws rather than Hand which makes me think he had a more bookish bent than Baelon. I think this means that Aemon shows up, finds out what's happened, and goes for the formal, logistical route of building a legal case as to why Rhaenys wil remain his successor and eventually become Queen of Westeros. I think it's even likely he'll see this legal route as more respectful of his father too.

Aemon has to shore up alliances for Rhaenys/Laena/Laenor -> In canon, we know Rhaenys gets the Velaryons, the Celtigars, the Manderlys, the Dustins, the Baratheons, and the Starks on her side. If he can get to Matthos Tyrell and Grover Tully, not only can he cancel out the Peakes being shitty in the Reach, he can completely claim the Riverlands, and all he needs to do is stall a few more years so Jeyne Arryn becomes Lady of the Vale and then he's got her on lock too. I think he's got way more of a chance of gaining support than Corlys and Rhaenys do on their own.

The Second Quarrel Gets Ten Times More Quarrelsome -> Listen, all Alysanne ever does is just fuck off to Dragonstone, she never actually attempts to fight Jaehaerys over anything. But if Aemon comes back and goes "mom was right what the fuck is your problem", well well well suddenly Alysanne has a son with actual political power (unlike Aly, whose ruling power was completely stolen from her by Jaehaerys prior to this). Maybe Aemon decides to publicly break from his father for real and sets up shop at Dragonstone or maybe he calls Alysanne back to KL so she can be a menace in front of Jaehaerys' face, but either way, Jaehaerys can't just send Maegelle to gaslight Alysanne into coming home this time because Alysanne has someone who matters (a man) on her side.

Daemon Starts Acting Like Daemon -> I think he starts going off the shits earlier because now it's his own father attempting to push him further down in the succession by handing over the crown to Aemon and Rhaenys. We know Viserys and Daemon idolized their parents but I think his entire character shows us that just because he loves someone doesn't mean he's above throwing a violent temper tantrum.

Viserys might not marry Aemma -> PERSONALLY, if I'm Aemon and I come back home and Jaehaerys has named Baelon crown prince, which makes Viserys second in line, and then Viserys is trying to marry a Targaryen-Great House daughter, I would stop that shit so fast it would give Caraxes motion sickness. And I'm not talking like some Viserra esque "last ditch effort" I'm talking I'm picking fights with every tom dick and stanley that refers to Aemma as Viserys' betrothed, I'm calling in every favor I have to stop this wedding, I'm threatening Rodrik Arryn's sons that if they hand Aemma over I'll use Caraxes to burn the Vale fleet to the fucking ground. If he doesn't straight up start a minor war over this match, he's an even bigger idiot than his mother AND ALL THREE VISERYS KINGS COMBINED.

I will admit given my general "fuck this dude i wish maegor had barbecued him" stance on jaehaerys, i would not call myself The Jaehaerys Understander so I'm kind of...unsure of how he would react? The thing about Jaehaerys is that the only people who push back on his flaws are women (Rhaena, Alyssa V., Saera, Alysanne) and not only does he not have to listen to them because he's king, he can also punish them by completely stealing away any power they have so that he never has to even hear them bitch at him again (and that's exactly what he does by refusing to give Rhaena a home of her own and usurping her, by refusing to apologize to his mother and then forcing her to reconcile with a man who is going to murder her with his dick, making a circus out of traumatizing and sexually humiliating Saera, and then continuously abusing and gaslighting Alysanne throughout the entirety of their marriage btwww!!!!). Jaehaerys can't just disinherit a living Aemon the way he can Saera or banish Aemon to be the castellan of some old haunted castle the way he does Rhaena; he simply has to engage with this issue.

And the thing is - if he figures it's more of a headache to fight publicly with Aemon than just reinstate Aemon as Crown Prince (or, idk make Aemon Baelon's heir so that the line of succession reverts back to Aemon?? idk how this shit works i don't care about the uber rich and their fake rules), what is this man supposed to do when he dies and Aemon goes "anyway Rhaenys is crown princess of dragonstone, i'm king now, suck my dick viserys you shitty ass nephew" whomst is gonna stop him, really, short of starting the dance a few decades earlier?

Levi knew the ins and outs of the legal system by now, with his knowledge he had easily been able to get dangerous criminals returned back in the streets to blame for his own crimes later. With many parties to blame the suspicion never fell on him. All criminals from the poor to the wealthy wanted him to represent them, knowing how he could baffle the prosecution and somehow get acquittals left and right even when the defendant was clearly guilty.

Everyone wanted his secrets, but he would keep those to himself. Finding out what poor souls were put on jury duty and charming them was his specialty. Offering a joke with some of the men, a understanding smile and feign interest as he heard another mind-numbing golf story. With the women, flirtations and promises of future intimacy to make them forget their worthless husbands or partners. Unanimously they always found his defendants not guilty.

"Ah, Mr. Schmidt was it?" He sits down, grimacing at the probably filthy chair set out for him.

"The hell do you want, some fancy rich asshole in a suit, what do you want with me? What, do I owe you money or something?"

"I'm a lawyer Mr. Schmidt, Levi Ackerman, have you heard of me?"

"Yeah I know you, you're the guy who gets everyone off with a slap on the wrist huh?"

"The same."

"I can't pay your big bucks, sorry."

"No don't worry about that, I only want to take this case because I'm curious as to the crime and why? Why go after someone so famous who could throw you in jail like this?"

"Because she's hot and rich, and who doesn't like that. But I'm telling you, she's got that rich bitch attitude that goes with it. Now I don't like that in a woman, y'know what I mean?"

"Absolutely, I feel the exact same way."

"So I figured I'd knock her down a peg or two."

"And how would you do that?"

"Break in, scare her a little, get her to drive herself crazy and then break in and fuck her 'til she's a fuckin' cum dumpster. See if she's still high and mighty then."

Deep down Levi could rip out the man's teeth, talking about his target that way disgusted him. If anyone he'd be the one doing that.

"I completely understand. Now how did you go about finding the address?"

"Apparently in one of her friend's personal posts they show the apartment number. It wasn't hard to find street and city. After that it was history."

"Now I'm obligated to ask if you regret what you did."

"Are you kidding? Fuck no. I regret that I got caught is all. "

"Good to know. And if you got back on the streets what would you do with your freedom?"

"Probably try again, now I know what her security looks like."

"Understandable."

"You're really gonna represent me even though I can't pay your fees?"

"Of course I am, not so much for you, but because I'm interested to see this woman you've taken so much interest in."

"Oh trust me, she's sexy as hell let me tell you that."

"I don't doubt it." Levi stands.

"What you don't need some more information or stuff-?"

"I'll be back for that, don't worry. See you in court."

"Yeah I guess so. Hey what are you going to do with that stuff I told you?"

Levi chuckles. "Who knows? Maybe I'll just finish what you started."

Mirrorverse Crossover - Juleka

Julebeast’s claws gripped tightly at the chair she was sitting in. The sorceress noticed this and flashed a taunting grin. “Honestly.” Juleficent cooed. “Can’t we put that little tiff we had last night behind us? Have a pleasant conversation?” The hero couldn’t help but let out a growl as she responded. “How could I ever have a pleasant conversation with you?” Juleficent’s grin grew even wider. “Nonsense! There’s plenty that we can talk about! Our love for the gothic culture, Our beloved Rose…” At the mention of their girlfriend, both Julekas felt themselves soften.

“She is truly one of a kind…” Julebeast replied wistfully. “A lovely petal in a sea of thorns.” The villainess nodded in agreement. “My candy queen is a beacon amongst this flock of mindless drones who believe in…goodness.” She said that last word as if took everything she could not to gag. Outside of the room, both Roses reacted to the words of gratitude by their partners. “See?” Roselle said to her counterpart. “Doesn't it feel nice to see them getting along?” The Candy Queen merely crossed her arms in reluctant agreement. “I suppose.” she muttered. They looked back at the bubble.

“I wonder, my dear, if I may trouble you with a question?” Juleficent asked. “About your... transformation. How on earth did you go from a noble to a beast?” The hero took a deep breath. ” Well…allow me to tell you a story. There once was a princess, lusted after by many.” Julebeast took a moment to scowl as she remembered the countless days having to worry if someone would see her either as a person or an object. “One of those idiots happened to be a decently powerful sorcerer. One night, he came to visit the princess, made his move. And, him being a smarmy little asshole, you can imagine how that went for him.” The villain genuinely looked disgusted. “I take it he was a lout.” She responded.

“Yes, so after she politely turned him down and asked him to leave, he continued to push. She turned him down again… I’m guessing you can put the pieces together from there.” The hero laughed bitterly as she finished her story.

“What a vile creature!” Juleficent hissed. “To think such pigs could exist in our worlds.” Julebeast could only stare at her in a shocked silence. “What?” Juleficent said, sounding hurt. “There’s being evil and then there’s being a crude and objectifying bastard.” The villains observing the conversation agreed.

“OFF WITH HIS HEAD!” screamed the Mad King, swinging his dagger at the air. “He'll be swimming with Davy Jones when I'm done with him!” Reshma Hook snarled, pulling out her sword. ”The lord frowns on such petty hubris!” Simon Frollo exclaimed. Kimton just rolled his eyes.  “You guys are freakin’ out over nothing. What’d he do that was so wrong? She’s the one who-” His remark was cut off when a large burlap fist slammed down upon his head. “I hope you ain’t ferget what happened th’ last time I caught ya disrespectin women?” Ivan Oogie growled. The villainous Kim could only mumble gibberish in response, his eyes struggling to focus due to the blow. Everyone turned back to the bubble to view the two Julekas.

“As infuriating as the actions of that fool who dares call himself a mage, Why did you let him get away with it?” Juleficent asked.

“Why do you throw a bitch fit anytime you get snubbed from a party” The hero countered, as Juleficent’s scepte began to glow.

“As previously discussed, it is a sign of disrespect I can not merely stand idly and tolerate. If you do not fear me, you do not respect me!” she said, haughtily. The hero snickered in response.

“You’re right, I do not fear or disrespect you. But I don’t need to keep you off of a RSVP list, I can just say it to your face.”

Juleficent twitched before deciding to go for the kill.

“Just like I can brag to your face that I never had to play Beehtoven on my transformed brother.”

This insult earned a scratch to the face from Julebeast. Before a brawl can start, both Roses burst into the room and hold their Julekas back.

“My licorice, don't let her get to you, she's not worthy!” QRC pleaded, wiping the blood from her girlfriend’s face. “Let's wait until they sleep, then we can kill 'em!”

The Mistress of Evil nodded, before taking a moment to calm herself. "You are right as always, my queen." she admitted. "Why waste the magnificence of my wrath on these fools?"

“Sweetie, I'm here for you, ok? I'm right here.” Roselle said, soothing JuleBeast down.

“I don’t know what it is about her, Petal. She just…” The hero growled in frustration.

“Knows how to get under your skin. Trust me, I know. You were right to not give in to thoughts of revenge. You'd have thrown your life away, and your own family.”

“I know. Thank you, Rose.” Julebeast responded, hugging her girlfriend while glaring at her counterpart. “But I still hope that dragon bitch gets what’s coming to her in the end.”

“Silly girl, everyone knows that whether hero or villain, the beast is always slain.” Juleficent replied, walking off to her besties Mylensula and YzAlya.

It's finally here! Sorry for the long wait, combo of writers block and school got in the way. It's not as big as some of the other confrontations but tempers are still flying high regardless.
