i don’t like it when people characterize hal as just being a younger version of dirk who’s forever trapped at the point when he cloned himself to be AI. he’s not stuck in a perpetual void where growing isn’t possible for him b/c he’s not human anymore, as he does mature and change (while still making it his mission to be an immature jackass of course, don’t get me wrong) due to their varying circumstances, over time he becomes someone different than what dirk does starting at the point where they split @ 13; he becomes someone who isn’t dirk anymore. after the point of AR accepting himself as being hal, watering him down to being another version of dirk that hasn’t grown since becoming AI kinda destroys the entire point of him becoming and being hal. it completely ignores the progress he’s made as his own person. as hard as it is for him, hal is able to live with himself as someone new and attempts to seek out a way to live that life nearing the end of his arc (i.e. dirk and hal’s emotional rollercoaster of a final pesterlog). i understand the comic drives home the fact that they are the “same dude” in different forms, but that’s from dirk and hal’s perspective and they are both a little silly and need therapy. to summarize, he’s not stuck being 13 y/o dirk forever, b/c he’s hal

Edward Collins was not the sort of man to be ashamed of himself, or anything to do with his family. He was, however, the sort of man who could, and did, allow himself to be disappointed. His siblings disappointed him. His grandmother disappointed him. His own unsuccessful struggles to be taken seriously as The Man of the House constantly disappointed him.

He disappointed himself, and had done ever since the day he had convinced the beautiful, charming, vivacious, inflaming Miss Laura Murdoch into bed with him.

To the end of his life, Edward couldn’t begin to explain what had come over him. He’d never assumed she was that kind of girl, and of course he’d never been that kind of man. His late father had been… well… a true Collins, if Edward was being honest about his family’s long-standing reputation in matters of conjugal fidelity, and sadly it seemed that his brother Quentin was going the same way. But Edward had always prided himself on being a proper gentleman, and only associating with ladies.

And then… Laura. Laura Murdoch, who’d swept into Collinsport one blustery winter day and warmed up the entire town like a crackling fire at Christmas.

It wasn’t that he’d minded being married to her, of course. Well, not at first. The first decade or so of marriage had been quite pleasant. It was simply that whenever Edward looked at her—whenever he looked into her clear, guileless eyes and saw himself looking back—he always remembered how he’d felt the night he had succumbed to his male folly and Miss Murdoch’s charms, and done precisely what he was always counseling his younger brothers not to do.

Of course, he’d proposed marriage immediately after they had—immediately after. And she had accepted with such grace and dignity, almost as though their marriage was a matter of fate, something foretold by prophecy, that he’d been charmed all over again. And he’d been inflamed all over again. It really was no surprise that their first child had been born four days’ shy of nine months after their wedding day.

No, he hadn’t regretted his actions, precisely. Not until much latter, after the birth of their second child. In retrospect, little Nora was when their idyll of married life began to sour. Edward still wasn’t entirely sure why. It wasn’t Quentin’s fault, at the beginning; he’d been much too young. That humiliation had come later. It had all been Laura. Perhaps the second pregnancy had been too much of a strain… Certainly she’d never consented to allow her husband back into her bed. Or perhaps she’d simply had enough of bearing Edward’s children.

In the back of his mind, though… Edward wondered. Once he’d learned the truth about Laura, as much truth as he was ever able to learn, he couldn’t help thinking about what he used to see when he looked at her. He’d always thought he was seeing himself reflected in her eyes.

After she died, Edward wasn’t so sure anymore. Had it really been him? No… no, it had been someone else, someone whose face he happened to possess, and who she had been truly seeking, that night, when his world had begun, slowly, to end in fire.

Got my old laptop working so I could draw and do some commission work and decided to take a little break and smashed my two favorite dumpster fires together.

I realised (part of the reason) why I'm so angry with how the season 4 of The Magicians ended.

It always ends badly. Doesn't matter what it always ends badly for any queer characters. Or at least not how it's supposed to.

Shadowhunters? Yeah, the characters were awesome, but the show got canceled so instead of having a whole season to finish their story they had to do it in 2 episodes.

Dirk gently? The show got canceled the season before the characters were supposed to get together (at least that's what the rumors said)

And now, when l had the hope that for once I'm going to see my two beautiful queer characters happy together, when they gave us so much hope, they killed Quentin.

So yeah, I'm fucking furious.

okay, i’m not gonna spend time on this topic outside of this one post because i don’t believe in focusing on the negatives within your presence in an online community, i think it’s so counterproductive, but i’m just gonna put this out there because it’s a topic of conversation in the fandom again, so at least y’all know my view on it: i am not at all on board with the possibility of a dirk/assistent romantic storyline. i know some of y’all will have things to say about that, and that’s fine, but i just don’t like it at all. i think out of all the crazy situations and crazy people dirk meets on his cases, it would be really disappointing if his love interest came from blackwing (administration) in anyway. i just hate the idea of dirk’s love interest having anything to do with what blackwing does. there’s so many possibilities, and that’s about the worst one for me. so that’s my opinion, you’re allowed to disagree (though don’t need to do so @ me...) and i don’t judge you if you do! well, i’m done, back to praising the actual canon! like i said, i’m not gonna debate about this because i refuse to fight about dghda of all things because i love it and it’s awesome and so is the fandom plus this is not even canon so what’s the point. that’s my two cents, now i’m out.

I know that this is pedantic and petty, and that canon/word of God doesn't actually matter, but...while it's still Farah's birthday, I want to publicly rant about how frustrating it is that Farah's wanted poster lists her birth year as 1995.

First of all, I think we can all agree that the idea of Farah being younger than Amanda is ridiculous. Secondly, there's the show bible, which needs to be taken with an ENORMOUS grain of salt, but which does place Farah at 30--a lot closer to plausibility, given her life experience. Finally, there's the fact that 1985, not 1995, is when Jade Eshete was born, and since both Todd's and Amanda's birth years on their posters correspond to the birth years of the actors who play them, it seems odd that the same thing wasn't done for Farah.

All of this leads me to believe that giving Farah a 1995 birthday was either an innocent mistake on the part of the people behind those wanted posters, OR that the powers that be--the same ones who created Farah in all her nuanced, fascinating, badass-mess-who-longs-for-validation glory--decided that a woman in her early 30s was too old to be interesting or valid. And THAT thought makes me want to, as Farah would say, "scream and never stop screaming."

So, this is me, on my tiny internet soapbox, declaring that as far as I'm concerned, Farah was born in 1985. She's 34 today. Her life is the weirdest and most fulfilling it's even been, and she's never felt better about who she is. 

Happy birthday, Farah.
