So now we get to the controversial part of Sanji's subplot: him calling Robin for help while being held hostage by Black Maria.

Earlier Sanji asked Black Maria what she's going to do with Robin, and the spider-woman told him about various tortures she's going to perform on Robin. She even describes traps she prepared for the archeologist.

Now, giving the various declarations of protection Sanji said throughout the series, and his strong sense of camraderie and defience, one would expect for him to never yield. The other women even think that he will say: "Screw you!"

But he doesn't. He calls for help, which from outsider's perspective looks probably pathetic, as if Sanji was preferring to save his own skin than not get Robin captured.

The thing is... Robin is fucking badass. She can handle herself and I would argue that she would perfectly suit with Monstrous Trio (making them a Monstrous Quartet, hehe) with how she effortlessly handles most of the bad guys. She also is smart enough to detect traps, so really they underestimate her (which is weird considering that she's called Demon Child).

I would say that he could ask for help anyone else, not necesserily Robin (he was, after all, okay with Zoro fighting Monet, so a guy friend could do too), but maybe he didn't know if they are busy with something more pressing than him falling into a trap. Besides, maybe he also wanted to show his enemies that Robin will mop the floor with them.

But I've heard this scene is controversial because people had seen Sanji's inability to hit a female opponent as something he has to overcome; as some kind of mental obstacle. Therefore him calling Robin for help is him refusing to fight with Black Maria and delegating someone else to do it.

However, I think it's like with characters who have no-kill rule. Yes, it would probably be easier and the character in question would avoid many troubles on the way if they broke the rule... but it's a moral issue, a line that, if crossed, would change them drastically and maybe even break them. Besides, there is always a deep reason for the rule that is rooted with the character's origin and way of thinking. With Sanji, it's Zeff's teachings... but also Germa's disregard for human life in general (we could see that Sanji's brothers also share his pervert reactions to women, but they treat them poorly, like tools; they even beaten up a female chef just to screw with Sanji). He doesn't want to be a man who hits women, even if said women want to kill him.

And I get why people are frustrated that he gets a female oppontent he can't fight yet again, but I don't want him to break his moral code. I don't want him to lose part of what he is. Especially because, other than that, he's still one of the heavy hitters of Straw Hat crew. Let him call for help once in a blue moon.

Also, he's not running away after he gets saved. He runs to save the samurai. He's still fighting.

Zoro’s OPLA intro was extremely badass and I certainly don’t dislike it but I just started watching the anime and there is certainly something to be said for building someone up as being a demon in human form and when you actually meet him he is genuinely just some guy.

Chapter 1062: Satellites

It feels like we’re getting back to some classic One Piece humor with this new arc, and I’m enjoying it.

Let’s start with the cover story.

So, we had the two intruders at Chocolat Town back in chapter 1046. Looks like one of them was Kuzan. I’m guessing this isn’t Blackbeard’s full crew since we saw the man himself go after Hancock then kidnap Coby. If this cover story is happening around the same time, this might be the other part of that crew, though. After the road poneglyph while Big Mom is away?

On to the chapter!

Robin voices many of the same concerns fandom had after the reveal at the end of last chapter:

And we get confirmation of what many were theorizing: that Vegapunk has “satellite” bodies that he is controlling. It’s interesting that a man of science like Vegapunk would have satellites imbued with emotional personalities -- especially in the wake of the last science-related arc in Whole Cake where Sanji’s brothers had their emotions removed; and we know Judge and Vegapunk worked together in MADS. 

Wait. Are these Vegapunk’s various personality traits removed and placed into the satellites? If so, I wonder if Judge’s work inspired Vegapunk or the other way around.

Hmmmm.

Relating to the name Lilith, I immediately thought of the first wife of Adam and the mother of all demons. That would fit her as the “evil” satellite Vegapunk.

The Straw Hats left behind on the Sunny are under threat from Lilith, but she gets a wakeup call that an Emperor’s crew isn’t going to be easy pickings.

I love these two panels. I love Robin being portrayed alongside Zoro as a badass fighter. That’s my queen right there.

Also, I was howling at Luffy’s sheer rage at the food not being real. I love him so much.

We meet another Vegapunk satellite: Atlas. This one is supposed to be wrath. 

Atlas, of course, was a Titan in Greek mythology who, after a failed battle against the gods, was condemned to hold the heavens on his shoulders.

Atlas punches one of the holograms, revealing that she has gloves that let her touch light.

This seems like it would be useful in fighting Kizaru. Just a thought.

We also see the machine that makes food. I foresee Sanji being highly offended by this.

And shoutout to this post pointing out the Vega Cola. Who do we know that admires Vegapunk and powers his inventions with cola? Franky gonna have a field day. 

Finally, we see CP0 is on the way to Egghead as well. And guess who’s back!

I’m sure Lucci is much stronger than he was in Enies Lobby, but there’s no way he could fight Luffy now, right?

Considering Lucci is actually questioning the orders to take out Vegapunk, it wouldn’t shock me if we see a shift in allegiances.

One Piece Chapter 1034 - Initial Thoughts

And we are in deep with the fights now

In and out the manga because I'm in a fight with time to try and enjoy my day off and the world is saying 'Nope', I had intended to do this much earlier but online transaction problems (which involved me waiting 10,000 years behind elderly people at the bank just for a yes/no answer) has put me on the backlog

anyway, One Piece! Last we saw Zoro found the answers he needs, and Volume 101 released some SBS goodness confirming that the dude was indeed Ushimaru (but not Zoro's father) among others - I like the Yamato Takeru reference, given how that's what started my theory that Yamato pre-reveal was an okama.

Let's see what comes next

Spoilers for the Chapter, Support the Official Release

A nice Usopp chapter cover, chilling like a badass for the Mink kids

Unsurprisingly, we are not continuing with Zoro/King, it now falls to Sanji/Queen again

Back with the courtesans and they're looking to escape the damage Sanji and Queen's fight is causing, they seem unaware that the island is in the air

Osome (I think she's the one Sanji was accused of hurting) is waiting for someone called Chuji though

As I noticed last chapter, Momo confirms that he has connected to Kaido's flames and intends to guide it away

It's a good thing for Momo, but it also comes with its limits that if Kaido is defeated the flames will disappear, but it extends the time

Hidden Pandaman between the fights of the Samurai and Beast Pirates on the live floor

Queen though starts demonstrating that he can do Sanji's brothers' attacks; Sparkling Queen, Henry Queen, Winch Queen...He's not too great at naming these moves

Turns out he wanted to show this when Sanji put on the Raid Suit, he really doesn't get that they both hate the same guy. Also he doesn't replicate Reiju's powers, Oda why are you neglecting Baeju?

Sanji though makes Queen officially join the missing arm club with Shanks, Kid and Hawkins by smashing it apart

Sanji does point out though that, unlike Zoro, he can see he's doing damage. Queen is weakening just as much, it's just that Sanji's stopped his upgrade

But Queen next demonstrates that he can copy the Stealth Black powers too, turning invisible

In response, Sanji uses his newfound speed to be undetected

Even when invisible, Queen pulls out the Enel face

Awwww Chuji is a lil mousey, reminds me of Kid Sanji feeding the rats

As Osome calls out to Chuji though, Queen reflects on how Osome - his 'new favourite since Komurasaki's death' - has been rejecting his advances by feigning a migraine

And there it is, Sanji didn't hurt Osome, Queen did while invisible, calling it 'Divine Punishment'

Sanji does run down that his enhanced durability, speed and strength opens the door for more skills, being able to handle more heat alongside his Haki for a new level

Ifrit Jambe! Nice reference there with the Islamic Fire Demon, almost parallel to the Hindu/Buddhist demon class Asura. I kinda hope when coloured it's blue, like a gas heater

Also enraged by realising that Queen hit the woman, Sanji just unloads on Queen

Osome seems to suddenly notice Queen appearing, but I dunno if it'll fully clear Sanji's name

Boeuf Burst sends Queen flying, as Sanji kicks him into *checks author note* the next 2 weeks...no chapter around my birthday it seems, is Oda planning a big Xmas chapter?

So with last week being all Zoro, this week was all Sanji. I did like how we cleared Sanji's name quickly, because none of us really bought it, and Sanji having to fight Queen with his brothers' powers is very symbolic, it's him fighting his Germa name.

It's also a natural progression of Sanji's powers increasing, while Zoro has to push himself to the edge to break his limits, Sanji has to swallow his pride and accept these adjustments and use them his way. Ifrit Jambe is a great improvement, and I can see the Jabra fight in this a little, furthering my belief that Zoro and Sanji will win on the same chapter.

I can hope that Sanji's fondness for little mouseys can clear his name, but at the same time I wonder if his simpness can handle the gratitude of a pleasure hall XD

The Voyage So Far: Enies Lobby

this is still one of my very favorite nami panels. i think she’s really great through all of water 7 and enies lobby in general, actually, even though she isn’t really one of the characters in focus for a lot of it- like zoro and sanji, she stays pretty steadfast and very badass even though everything that happens, and never gives up on robin for a moment despite being one of the ‘weaker’ members of the crew. and it’s always fun to see her playing with lightning.

one of my favorite jokes from the first half or so of enies lobby is the strawhats both being completely unsurprised that luffy charges in ahead of them as soon as they arrive AND being able to find him immediately by following the explosions. they know him so well. 

luffy’s never been scared of dying, going all the way back to when he told coby he was fine with dying for his dream back in chapter two or three. that conversation is what his exchange with blueno here reminds me of- blueno asks him how long he intends to keep fighting, and luffy says until he dies, like there’s nothing to it.

it’s always been a trait of his to face death unflinching with a grin, so long as it’s for the sake of something he cares about, be it his crew or his brother or his dream, and i just really like that about him.  

i’ll go into it in the dressrosa post too, but i think it’s really impressive just how long oda held off on giving luffy any sort of significant power-up. he gets his first big power boost in the whole series here, forty volumes in. i’ve always liked that oda is very conservative with power boosts like this, because it both keeps the series’ powerscaling in check and makes the times it does happen much weightier. this is a monumental moment, and it feels like it.

also, i love the way gear two is drawn pre-timeskip, especially with the steam. it looks very cool and atmospheric.

i really like how united the strawhat crew feels throughout enies lobby, after all the internal turmoil and discord of water seven. even though the matter of usopp leaving the crew is still unresolved, they’ll all together once more, on the same page, and fully united in the goal of saving robin, whatever consequences it might bring. 

the tree of knowledge has such a cool design- it looks massive, and even more than that, it looks old. you look at that tree and you know its been there for easily thousands of years. its seen entire eras of history, and it would be priceless even without the countless books stored inside it.

and then it burns.

i’m so endlessly sad about the tragedy that is robin’s relationship with her mother. they never even got to see each other until their world was ending, and even then only for a couple minutes.

olvia is a very interesting character, because she’s someone who chose her dream over the people she loved. that’s not an inherently good or bad choice, but it is a choice she made, and it’s what led to the ending she and robin had to have. i’ve wondered a lot what might have happened if she chose the other way, if she never left or if she came back sooner or if she chose to flee the buster call with robin, and how different (and almost certainly better) robin’s life would have been if she had.

in a way, olvia reminds me a lot of kouzuki toki. they both die in order to fling a light of knowledge and hope into the future, and they both send their children away and choose to stay behind to choke on ash for the sake of a better tomorrow. 

i didn’t really notice until putting these panels together, but a lot of things burn in enies lobby. ohara burns, and the pluton plans and the world government flag, and enies lobby itself, and at the end, the going merry burns, too. if you extend it back to water seven, there’s the galley-la headquarters, too. in an arc that deals so much with the preservation and destruction of history and knowledge, it’s a fitting motif. 

the world government flag burning is still to this day one of the most striking panels out of a series full of them, in my opinion. in one act, the strawhats proclaim their absolute defiance against the world government, and their willingness to make enemies of the greatest power in the world for the sake of their friend.

it’s also another one of those moments that’s interesting to think about in the context of luffy’s past. it was a ship flying that same flag that shot sabo down, and while luffy wasn’t there to see it, i don’t think he’s oblivious to that fact, especially given how he says just before this he understands robin’s enemies perfectly.

dadan told him and ace that there was nothing they could do against the whole world, and luffy went and did it anyways.

sometimes i just think about how scary it must have been for robin, someone who’s been weighed down by the shackles of her past with no escape in sight for so very long, to open herself up and let herself hope, for life and freedom and a dream that’s always been out of reach. 

franky has a lot of really great moments between this arc and water seven- his conversation with usopp as usopp is working on merry and his talk with robin on the sea train are two others. it’s almost impressive how quickly he becomes an immensely likable character once we start getting to know him, given how he’s first introduced as an absolute piece of shit.

his burning of the pluton plans is a favorite of mine, and i think it might be because, like so many people before and after him, he’s choosing here to stake all his hopes on the strawhats, on luffy’s ability to pull off the impossible and on robin’s goodness. when robin’s only ever been chased and hated and called a demon by the world, franky chooses to trust her and luffy with the legacy his dad died for, and neither of them let him down.

monster point looks SO FUCKING TERRIFYING in enies lobby, and i LOVE it. look at that. franky is seven and half feet tall, and in front of monster point he’s tiny. monster point is huge, and dead-eyed, and a force of absolute destruction. i do kind of wish we got to see chopper go completely feral like this more often. he deserves to be terrifying!

i love how much FAITH all the rest of the strawhats continue to have in usopp throughout enies lobby. he left the crew and they really would have a right to be angry at him if they chose to, but it doesn’t even seem to cross any of their minds. they’re just happy he’s okay, and they include him again without missing a beat, because he’s still their friend and they know down to their bones they can trust him, even after everything. 

i’ve always really loved zoro and kaku’s little moment of post-battle banter here- zoro relays paulie’s message about cp9 being fired, kaku says he’s out of a job, zoro tells him to try the zoo, and kaku cracks up.

it feels very real to me for whatever reason, and i think part of it ties back into how well one piece handles morality with its characters- zoro and kaku are genuinely pretty similar people who get along decently, it just happens that they wound up on opposite sides. there are series where you’d never see moments like this due to the lines between good and bad being so firmly drawn, and i love how one piece blurs those lines so much they may as well not exist a lot of the time.

this is the other sequence, along with luffy climbing the drum rockies barehanded, that always makes me physically cringe to look at. it looks so painful. robin is so nearly powerless here, but not quite- she can still buy time for her crew to catch up, even if it’s only seconds, even if she risks shattering her teeth or even her jaw in the process. she’s spent so long giving up and has only just started daring to hope- she’s not about to go gentle.

there aren’t many panels that give me catharsis like this one. there really aren’t.

oda’s villains are usually complicated and awful and often a little admirable, if only for how clever or how terrifyingly powerful they are, but every now and then he comes up with someone who’s just pathetic and cowardly and pointlessly cruel. spandam is like this, obviously, and so is orochi, and the celestial dragons, and i’d argue flampe from whole cake island as well. and there’s nothing like seeing characters like them- weak, cruel people so assured in their own power and rightness- get obliterated.

one of the things i really like about enies lobby is that nobody really gets sidelined- everybody gets multiple chances to shine. luffy, usopp, and obviously robin are the most in focus, obviously, but zoro, sanji, nami, chopper, and even franky all get a bunch of individual awesome moments. oda’s ability to handle his cast satisfyingly is consistently really impressive (if sometimes strained in huge ensemble arcs like dressrosa or wano) and it really shows here, i think.

i just really love the entire climax of enies lobby. much like the arc as a whole, it just feels triumphant, even though the situation is extremely dire. luffy unlocking gear three, robin’s cuffs getting unlocked, usopp shooting spandam and the marines all the way from the tower of justice- it’s all just good, a long chain of much-needed victories and catharses, and it feels very good to read.

i’ll always be impressed by just how much characterization oda manages to give merry, a boat. she’s only really a character in water seven and the end of enies lobby, only about two chapters of which she actually speaks in. and yet i don’t think you’d find a single one piece fan who disagrees that merry’s death is easily one of the most heartwrenching in the entire series.

i love the reactions of the strawhats to robin’s thanks. they’ve just gone through hell to save her, most of them are beat to shit and they all risked their lives, and yet they all just smile, or brush it off, because to them there’s nothing else they could have done. it’s all worth it, so long as they got her back, so long as she’s safe and happy.

merry’s funeral just hits me in the chest every single time i read it. it’s tragic, of course, but there’s also something almost lovely about it, something peaceful about her getting to go out on her own terms, carrying her crew to safety one last time, defying every rule of the universe to do it. just like a strawhat pirate.

oda’s ability to communicate emotion through expressions really comes through here, too. merry has the only lines in this scene, fitting for her death in the limelight, but the shots of every other crewmate’s face let us know at a glance just what they’re all feeling and just how strongly they’re feeling it.

you know, i’d forgotten we only learn the name of the new world after enies lobby. we only get proper exposition about the revolutionary army and the yonkou here, too, despite them being set up since loguetown and jaya (or alabasta, or even chapter one if you count from shanks’s introduction) respectively. oda’s ability to parse out exposition and explanation so we always have just the right amount of information is really impressive- we always have more questions, but we also always have the feeling that those questions have answers, and that sooner or later they’ll be revealed.

it’s my opinion that one of the great joys of one piece is seeing luffy and the crew rise up in the world, and seeing them gain more and more notoriety. i love nothing they do ever happens in a vacuum- everything has impacts, and there are always outside eyes watching, and often those impacts are things that they never could have predicted.

ace and blackbeard is still, i think, definitely one of the coolest looking fights in the whole series. it’s not all that often we get to see two people with extremely flashy and showy abilities go all-out against each other, and the resulting fireworks are still really something to behold, despite how badly it all ends.

so everything is super exciting right now. here are some things off the top of my head:

i love robin and brook interacting, and robin's demon transformation blew my mind!!! she looked soooo cool and i love how it's connected to people calling her "devil child" like she's embraced it and weaponized it

i looove yamato. i loved the flashbacks with him and ace. i really hope he joins the crew. i saw something that makes me think he definitely is but i guess we'll see👀

i...... need to know if kiku and kin'emon are alive😳🗡 i'll cry for days if they are dead. kiku and izou need a proper reunion that isn't on a battlefield and also i just love her. and kin'emon has become one of my faves and i'll just be really sad if he doesn't make it. but i believe. they can't be dead.

Look Zoro is cool and all but I’m stronger than him. My proof is that Zoro had depression for five seconds and was immediately incapacitated those three sword and badass demon aura were nothing to a fruity ghost powers that induce depression. but I’ve had depression for a decade and I’m still kicking. So yeah.

This is the Zoro that “nothing happened” too and in one paragraphs I’ve proven to be stronger than him.

i mean:

-'death surgeon' trafalgar law. okay, this one i'll give you. law is the edgiest ass around and he deserves an epithet that such does justice, so death surgeon is a 12/10 from me. still bombed on all the other ones though

Chapter 1038: *heart eyes*

Y’all knew I was going to write this one up. Let’s goooooo.

After all, the main event of Onigashima continues: Raizo vs. Fukurokuju.

Just kidding. This fight is becoming a meme at this point, though.

Storytelling-wise, I suppose Raizo needs to continue holding Fukurokuju off because Orochi is waiting for him, and Hiyori (and probably Denjiro, who we haven’t seen in 84 years) still needs to wreck Orochi’s shit.

As for the Zoro scene

My money is on this being a gag where it’s actually Brook but Zoro is hallucinating a Grim Reaper due to the pain of his injuries + mink medicine. It would be very Oda, after all. Yohoho.

The Izo scene is interesting. It could easily just be a heavily-injured Izo holding off CP0, but this expression makes me feel like there could be something else going on:

Then we’ve got Yamato vs. the fire demon. Not much to say there other than Yamato’s ice powers are the perfect counter to hold this thing off.

AND NOW WHAT WE’VE ALL BEEN WAITING FOR.

Honestly, the Law and Kid vs. Big Mom fight is the most interesting of all the remaining fights to me for a few reasons. 

Firstly, Kaido does absolutely nothing for me as a villain. I find him uninteresting, and honestly, I was a bit irked in the last chapter when Luffy was smiling about fighting him considering what Kaido’s done to Wano -- to Kin’emon, to Momo, to Yamato, to Tama. He usually takes those kinds of things more personally when he’s fighting for his nakama so it felt off to me.

Secondly, we know that fight is going to end with Luffy winning somehow. Luffy always gets to beat the Big Bad (even when narratively it would be more satisfying for someone else to do so *coughDressrosacough*). 

Thirdly, the fight is a lot of brute force where Kaido and Luffy hit each other with haki. Yes, there’s sky splitting. But it’s just... not that interesting, honestly.

On the other hand, Big Mom fascinates me as a villain. I think she’s the most terrifying of the Yonko. We don’t know how this fight is going to end. Law and Kid could very well lose -- or win or their fight could be interrupted by the arrival of the World Government or any number of other endings. There’s a less determined story structure here. 

And this fight has been far more about creative Devil Fruit usage, which has been so neat! I think too much focus gets put on haki sometimes. Law’s awakened fruit, Kid’s mecha, Big Mom’s homies... I think this fight is just more fun.

SO.

I am a simple girl. I see Law whump, I enjoy. I see the Hearts worrying about their captain, I enjoy. Thank you for these gifts, Oda.

But Big Mom is making a big mistake by not going for the killing blow, proving she’s still underestimating Kid and Law. Ironic, considering she says that Kaido shouldn’t play with his food.

We also can see she’s clearly taken damage and she admits she’s reaching her limits too.

Did I mention that I’m a simple girl? I see Law being badass and I enjoy.

First, how freaking cool is it that Law’s awakening allows him to extend Kikoku? The Ope Ope no Mi is ridiculous.

And that shot of Big Mom taking the Shock Wille to the face is one of the more brutal panels we’ve seen in a while. Holy shit.

And then Kid gets his turn. While Law used his awakening again (his stamina has grown leaps and bounds since Dressrosa, hasn’t it?), Kid seems to just be using his regular fruit abilities here, though to great effect:

I’m going to complain about this panel just a tiny bit: there is soooooo much detail in the panel, I can’t actually tell what’s going on. If I hadn’t read the summary before the chapter, I wouldn’t have been able to tell this was a mecha bull. Sometimes less is more.

But those final panels of the chapter:

BADASS.

Also, considering the naming conventions of the fight chapters, we’ve had a few fights where the chapter was named for the fight and the defeat happened in the chapter after. Will this pattern continue with this fight? It would, in some ways, seem a bit too sudden for a fight against one of the Yonko, but then we have to remember Kid and Law have been fighting Big Mom the entire time since they left the rooftop. Luffy got knocked off the island, rescued by the Hearts, ate a bunch of food, and went back up with Momo while Kid and Law were fighting the whole time. I’m guessing the anime will give us more of this fight because we deserve it.

Oh, and that cover story. Is Pudding going to rescue Sanji’s brothers?
