you’ve probably seen your feed flooded with AI generated images in a “Studio Ghibli style”. trends like these reinforce the idea that art can be easily replicated and devalued. the future of artists is more uncertain than ever. we don’t know if in a few years we’ll still be able to make a living from this, since many companies are adopting the mindset of “why should i pay someone for their well-earned work when a machine can do it for free in an instant?” that mindset is the real problem: the way society is starting to perceive art.

art is essential to human life. many people realized this during the pandemic: what would we do without music, movies, books, that bring us comfort? art is more than just the final product. it’s about the process, struggles, and personal growth that comes with it. when you create, you grow, learn, and challenge yourself. AI erases that, replacing it with instant and shallow replication. real art brings people together, evoking emotions and reminding us of what it means to be human.

relying on AI to make art isn’t innovation, it’s avoiding the challenge of creating something meaningful. AI tools like these are being pushed as "the future," but what does that say about us? replacing human artistry with shallow, mass-produced content takes away humanity from art, do we really want to be part of a world where art is just another disposable product? what value do we place on creativity?

Sagittarius ascendant: spouse may be tall, a lot taller than you anyway. May come from a different country so may have features that look foreign or different to yours. Your future spouse may love to dress up not in a fun way but a smart way, like he may love buying new suits, new shoes, new ties etc. he can represent himself as someone smart but may often like to keep the same style on him. I’ve noticed that they may tend to do that in accordingly so that people can associate them with that piece of clothing, but it never looks bad on them for how many times he repeats the outfit.

Aquarius ascendant: your future spouse can have this cartoon character appearance. I don’t know why but they do, they can have features that look good on them but if you analysed them individually they would look almost weird. Also, one poet may well write some thoughtless, drugged out poem with zero intention behind any choice, but the anti intellectual mindset of "then we shouldn't do analyses" means you're suddenly cutting yourself from the ability to understand every other poet who ABSOLUTELY depends on you having critical thinking and analysis skills to understand and appreciate their poem!

Also poetry, like art, really suffers in this argument, because a LOT of it is context dependent... and the context of a sickly noble poet of the 18th century is VERY different from yours.

Let's look at Keats for my example, the opening of Ode to a Nightingale.

My heart aches, and a drowsy numbness pains          My sense, as though of hemlock I had drunk, Or emptied some dull opiate to the drains          One minute past, and Lethe-wards had sunk: 'Tis not through envy of thy happy lot,          But being too happy in thine happiness,—                 That thou, light-winged Dryad of the trees                         In some melodious plot          Of beechen green, and shadows numberless,                 Singest of summer in full-throated ease.

Do you know, 21st century tiktok gooner that you may well be, who Lethe is? Or what? What does Lethe-wards means??

Well, assuming you know what Hemlock is, you know we're talking about poison (from a plant that is native to Europe btw so you can already tell it's not a south american poem...), of emptying opiates down your gullet.

Lethe is the daughter of Eris, the greek goddess of strife. Lethe meanwhile is the personification of forgetfulness and oblivion.

Matches much better with "drowsy numbness" now, eh?

But Lethe isn't just a person. She's a river. One of the five rivers of the underworld. The shades of the dead had to drink from her to forget their human lives.

So like, frankly it doesn't really matter if Keats was high as a kite while writing out his envy of a little fleeting bird... He's using terms and expressions that you have to learn about and study in order to appreciate what the poem is trying to express.

The lack of curiosity behind the argument is saddening. Not only would you understand poems more, or art, you get to DISCUSS them. And maybe you were forced to discuss some dull stuff with people you don't like at school, but wouldn't you want to learn more about the badass poem Ozymandias, and discuss it with friends? It's anti-military, and much like Dune, a warning against men of great power, and the pointlessness of their earthly rule.

And THEN, because you now know it's a poem from Percy Shelley, you can appreciate this mini plot twist in ALIEN COVENANT

And you can also appreciate the irony (and dark future) of the Watchmen character who dared call himself Ozymandias!

Because culture always calls back on itself, and knowing the history and logic and meaning of the Ozymandias poem leads you to having a better and deeper understanding of recent, contemporary media that in turn calls back to it!!

Dean's not one for big cities. Too many people, too much for him, honestly.

So if he ever left the bunker, say with you by his side, I think he'd be happy with a cozy cabin somewhere. It would have to be big enough for Miracle - Dean could do little hikes with him in the woods. Oh, and one or two extra rooms. Just in case you really want to take advantage of breaking away from hunting, and in his words:

"Maybe...you know...start on Phase 2 of this whole retirement gig. Start a family."

There would also be a nice fireplace and a comfy couch for you to hook him into some late night cuddling (and probably some slow, hot sex by the fire).

Beau Arlen

I see a lovely ranch-style house for Beau. 🥰 Moderately sized, but still spacious and open, with a nice big living room and a couple of guest rooms, plus Emily's room, of course. But he would probably insist on having a vacation house somewhere -- like a colonial style house or a nice beach house to escape the city when it gets too much.

Russell Shaw

Hmm, this guy I could see not being fussed about the size of the place or the location, as long as it's comfortable and homey with you. Because the thing is, he hasn't really had a home since he left his family when he was a teenager.

He's spent decades in the service, and years more on the road, bouncing from motel to motel between contract jobs. He would probably say what the other guys inherently feel -- that you're his home. You're his peace.

You don't need to shame people for falling victim to scams either, and doing so is counterproductive if your goal is to genuinely help them. It's just gonna make them less likely to go to you in the future because who wants to be called an idiot to their face?

Basically we all need to learn to be kinder and more aware. Don't jump down someone's throat for trying to warn you about possible scams and try to exercise caution, but also know that the internet is often a scary, dangerous place, especially if you never used it until you were well into adulthood. So don't purposely make someone feel small for doing something "dumb," because you never know if or when it could be you. Maybe it won't be in the exact same way or through the exact same method, but no one is infallible.

Any specific thoughts on Noelle’s seemingly one sided crush on Susie? Ur analysis are always real neat

hm! well I kinda already talked about this but only in a tag essay like 2 1/2 years ago (here) so I can get into it again.

I think noelle's crush on susie reveals a lot about noelle as a person, though the story and framing so far have kind of conditioned us to just look at it as a surface level "omg mean tough girl x sweet shy girl! lesbians!!" and maybe even subconsciously connect it to alphys/undyne and just brush it off as the type of wholesome relationship toby likes writing. I also don't think the crush is necessarily one-sided! you could argue that susie felt pressured into saying what she did on the ferris wheel, but susie is all about breaking the rules and doing whatever she wants so that wouldn't make much sense to me. her responses seemed very genuine. it could turn out to be a fleeting feeling or susie mistaking a desire to be friends as a desire for romance, but I don't really have enough information to speculate much on that yet.

back to noelle, pre-chapter 2 noelle's attraction to susie seems far more based in fantasy than anything, kind of objectifying susie's violence. which is fine, she's a teenager, it doesn't make noelle a bad person, it just indicates that the crush is very shallow to start off. susie is also a symbol to noelle, someone she definitely sees as representing freedom and defiance, which is something she craves. noelle does end up very open to the possibility of getting to know susie as a real person once she learns susie is "nice" but her priorities are still more with her own feelings than susie's.

this is tricky to talk about as an adult, so first I'd like to remind everyone that I have Been a teenage girl and I remember very clearly what it was like, haha. anyway I would argue that noelle's interest in susie is also undeniably sexual, even if she doesn't fully realize it. I think we all kind of know that but it's uncomfortable to just say in plain language. (this is an aside but I think the way toby implies this from noelle's dialogue and internal monologue is REALLY smart from a writing perspective, it leads the brain there without getting weird about it.) in addition to freedom, susie also represents adulthood to noelle in that way. she represents the future, one where noelle can fully express herself. at the same time, noelle associates the feeling of fear with being protected by somebody else in her childhood, the past. susie is "the good kind of scary", both sexually exciting, an "adult" feeling, and nostalgically comfortable, a "child" feeling. susie could be the bridge between past and future that noelle, who is notoriously frozen in her own childhood, needs to move forward. I think that could apply even if the two don't end up together, just from noelle working through her own feelings about it all.

I could also get into the implications of suselle being "the narrative's approved ship" or how noelle's relationship with susie contrasts her relationship with kris, or even how we're conditioned to see lesbian relationships as either inherently more "wholesome" or the taboo and exciting "toxic yuri", but this is getting really long already. idk where it all will end up going but I think theres already a lot to dive into if you look past the surface!

tommy’s a runner afraid of getting his heartbroken and we know that he doesn’t look at love or the future of love where he’s concerned with an optimistic outlook or positive hope and yet, he bought that bottle of champagne. just the mere act of buying that champagne and bringing it back to buck’s with him—likely to celebrate after asking buck for a second chance—is symbolic of a once hopeless and fearful tommy, now having some hope that buck could say yes to trying again. a tommy who’s thinking about a yes over a no, and in a way, celebrating that yes even before he’s had the conversation he wants to have. i know that he cut and run at the first sight of conflict and things going south after his and buck’s argument—but there’s also some tangible and real growth there within him that’s worth considering because i don’t think a pre-breakup tommy would’ve made, what he would even consider, a premature and over-confident presumption (buying a celebratory bottle of champagne before even having the conversation), where the future of his love life is concerned and where he’s putting himself in the vulnerable position of potentially being told no.

If everyday people saw the things that are popping up the more we study the immediate and longer term effects of COVID-19, they would be rightfully terrified.

Those of us who have been affected since the beginning only have so much energy available to keep begging people to take this virus seriously. The corporations want you to believe the pandemic is over, but that's because they value the money you could be earning them more than they do your livelihood.

[Incoming rant ahead...]

I'm a part of a massive research study and we're just starting to get to clinical trials (I think five tied to our initial study will be selecting participants in the coming year if I remember correctly?)

Regardless, we're still a LONG way away from treatments to the horrific damage COVID can cause the human body. Don't gamble your life and livelihood away because you're self-conscious about wearing a mask.

The infection that took me from a fairly healthy and active person to 95% housebound and occasionally bed-bound occurred during the alpha wave- before they were even admitting it was spreading in the U.S. All of this, before any lock-downs, let alone suggestions to wear masks.

I didn't have warnings to save me from this debilitating fate. All of you do.

I can't even begin to imagine how much worse my COVID-related cPTSD would be if I was also living with the guilt of knowing that I brought this on myself. I guess that's the one silver lining of having just recently celebrated my 5-year anniversary of the first symptoms that would forever change my life. I know that I was listening to- and following the advice of scientists based on what they knew in that moment of time.

There's nothing special about me that made me an especially good target for long COVID. Scientists haven't found any genetic trait present amongst long haulers so far that seem responsible for us specifically being "selected" to have these outcomes. Everyone is potentially one infection (even an asymptomatic one) away from disability from this. COVID doesn't care if you're healthy or smart or rich or have a "good immune system". You are just a host to cells it can manipulate and irrevocably damage to it.

I wouldn't wish what happened to me on anyone. It's hell. Depressingly, horrific hell that has no treatments or cures and no answers. Just judgement by those who want to pretend that the pandemic is over and that good people don't get struck down with these conditions because that would mean *gasp* they might be at risk!

It sucks. You'll be lucky if you find a doctor that takes you and your symptoms seriously. You'll exhaust yourself (making your symptoms and condition worse), explaining to them over and over again that exercise and therapy aren't the answer and, in the former case, can potentially make you sicker (see post-exertional malaise).

If/when treatments are found, they'll start off so expensive that even those with insurance will have trouble obtaining them. Glancing over one of the trials that is starting this year, if the treatment works, it's all off-label usage of existing drugs- meaning, that until the years of red tape, governmental paperwork can go through, insurance companies will reject claims and drag out appeals because they can and because it's expensive treatments already for its on-label uses.

Long story, short? It's never too late to start masking again. Future you might be really thankful you did.

The Technology We Have Already

Today I want to talk about one Solarpunk-thingie, that kinda annoys me - and has to do with a lot with how real-life politians deal with talking about technology and especially energy technologies.

And this is the following fact:

We already have the technology! This is not some SciFi shit!

See, the issue within the politics tends to be, that a lot of folks go: "Oh, yeah, we would LOVE to go renewable. But right it is not possible! Once the technology gets there, we will totally go 100% renewable!"

And basically a lot of Solarpunks online are also waiting for the technology to get there. Again, there is sadly a big group of folks who technically love the aesthetics of Solarpunk and also generally the idea of a Solarpunk future, but do not engage with it over it. And they usually will also wait for technology to get there.

But it already is.

Let me talk about it.

We can produce enough renewable energy

In a way I get it. If you are not working in any fields related to this - and do not follow science news - you might just not know how fast the renewable energy field is moving right now. 10 years ago, yes, a lot of countries would have been able to go 100% renewable, but not all. It depended basically on the climate and environment. Partly because the photovoltaic (what most people call solar, but us engineers use solar for something a bit different) cells were just not as efficient in certain climates. And while the mix of wind and hydro power could do A LOT for many countries, it could not for all.

However, that was mainly before China really pulled all the stops for their research. No, it is not only China, but holy shit, China's research in terms of photovoltaic is insane. If you follow this, you basically will see a new breakthrough - often from China - every couple months. And by now, the efficiency of photovoltaic is insane. Sure, it might not make sense as the only source of energy in places were you basically do not get any sunlight for half the year, but outside of that? It is so darn good.

Other than that, we are really darn good with wind energy (which to my opinion is still the best way of producing energy) and hydro energy.

Don't get me wrong: We can totally improve those things further and further. But we can absolutely power the world on renewables right now. We do not need fossile fuels right now!

We can build climate-friendly transport!

I will remind y'all once more: Electric cars are definitely better than gas powered cars, for those people and situations in which cars are needed. (Read: For emergency services, certain forms of service work who need to transport stuff outside of the rail network, and probably also some people who live very isolated for certain reasons.) However, they are still cars and suck for this reason, if you do not REALLY need them.

Still, we are fucking good by now in building electric cars and for those scenarios where they are needed. Heck, by now in my city pretty much all public transport runs electric, including the busses. And no, they are not tram busses.

And yeah, turns out, we figured out how to build railways more than 200 years ago, and we figured out how to electricize them in 1881. Yes. 1881. 18 in the front. Almost 150 years ago. Sure, back then we were not that good with it, but we managed to build one for intracity transport that worked - and worked for long.

Yes, admittedly, there are some forms of transport that right now we might indeed need fossil fuels for. Right now, we have no method to fly planes and helicopters in a way that is both mass-producable and renewable. And the same is with transcontinental transport via the ocean.

Yeah, sure. We can technically just go fully low tech and just sail. That works. Heck, while it is about half as quick as modern ways to transport over the ocean, it is feasible. However, we just cannot move the amounts of cargo we might need to move with sailing. There are people figuring this out (partly through creating much better sails that work for MUCH BIGGER ships) but yeah, we are not there yet.

Still, a) a lot of the intercontinental stuff we technically do not need to transport (most of it is using cheap quasi-slave labor to save money), and b) that should not stop us from just doing sustainable on-land transport which we can do.

We also know how to build a better society

Now, a lot of the folks going for the Solarpunk aesthetics rather than philosophy are quite often very mistrustful of both anarchism and communism - or heck, just socialism. They often have drunken the capitalist cool-aid of capitalism being the "only system that works". But here is the thing: It doesn't.

Sure, there are versions of capitalism that would work a whole lot better than the Chicago-flavored one, but it will never really work - especially in regards to saving the environment. I talked about that a lot before.

But here is the thing. We know how it works better. We know how to build a better society. We know how to make economics work better. We know how to make better schools. We know how to build better cities. We know how to prevent at least a lot of wars. We know how to make society safer for kids. We know how to make healthier families. We know how to make medicine as a system work better. We know it all.

Heck, we have known how to make schools that are better in every way since the early 20th century - so more than a hundred years. This proposed school system since has been proofen time and time again in studies to be better for kids, and better in terms of education. But do we use them? No.

Again, politicians love to go: "We would love to change things, but we do not have a better system." But it is not true. We know how to do it better.

Same with the police and prison and stuff. We know how to do it better.

But right now, a) a lot of the stuff works in the favor of those who hold most power (aka the billionaires), b) a lot of people just do not like the idea of changing stuff majorly (which makes politicians who want change unpopular), and c) politicians also would need to fund the change - and that is going to be hard.

So, yeah. Change would be hard.

But it is not because we do not know how to do better.

And I really just wish people would stop propagating this idea that we do not know better. We do. But folks right now profit from things staying the same. And it sucks.
