Just some "nazi adjacent" imagery from the 40s.
This argument that movies in the past hid all of their progressive political messages in subtext is just nonsense.
Some did and some didn't.
Just like today.
Only today we release 10 times more content.
But there was never a shortage of movies and TV shows with overt progressive messages. Hell, the end of the first Rambo movie was not a big shootout. No big explosions. It was just a speech from a depressed veteran about the horrors of war and PTSD.

Dog Day Afternoon is about a guy who tries to rob a bank so he can pay for his trans partner's gender affirming surgery.
That was released in 1975.
Here is a 1980s TV movie called The Day After where a bunch of people get nuked into skeletons.

Francis Bacon, 1944
Bacon was an Irish figurative painter, known for his raw, unsettling imagery and a number of triptychs and diptychs among his work. At a time when being gay was a criminal offense, Bacon was open about his sexuality, and was cast out by his family at 16 for this reason. He destroyed many of his early works, but about 590 still survive. The Tate, where these paintings are displayed, says this about the work: "Francis Bacon titled this work after the figures often featured in Christian paintings witnessing the death of Jesus. But he said the creatures represented the avenging Furies from Greek mythology. The Furies punish those who go against the natural order. Do any ungulates have any meaning? Like specific types of deer?
Deer and other types of ungulates have often been used as symbols, both cross-culturally and in literature. They’re fascinating creatures with a variety of habitats that exist both in the wild and in domesticated settings, so can be used in several different ways within a narrative depending on the type of meaning you wish to convey.
For this answer, we’ll focus mainly on deer, as covering all ungulates (which includes all animals with hooves ranging from horses to hippopotami) might make this answer far, far too long.
The general symbolism of deer
If we take deer at face value, some of the first imagery that will come to mind are grace, elegance, gentleness, and innocence. They can also be alert and vigilant, with a deep, mysterious connection to the wild. For this reason, many cultures (and writers) ascribe spiritual and mystical associations with them. They can also represent a connection to the supernatural, and the otherworld.
Writers will often use them as messengers or familiars, creating a bridge between the real and the fae. They can also represent growth and rebirth, as they shed their antlers, which grow again.
The cultural significance of deer
The cultural significance of deer and other ungulates have similarities but aren’t always identical. In indigenous native groups across North America, for instance, there are different traditions and stories associated with them. The Lakota believed that deer were guides on life’s journey but could also lead men astray. The Cherokee story of the Little Deer, on the other hand, sees the Deer Spirit enacting vengeance on hunters who don’t show deer the proper respect, and hunt them needlessly.
In Celtic mythology, white stags were often messengers to the underworld, and deer could shapeshift both at will and through enchantment. Arthurian legend also had a white stag as a symbol of the hunt, representing man’s neverending quest for spiritual enlightenment. And in Germanic cultures, the deer represented both the hunt and kingship.
In Hindu mythology, the goddess Saraswati is associated with a red deer and can take its form. As the goddess of learning, red deer and their hides have also taken on this meaning. In Shinto tradition, deer are messengers of the gods, and in Chinese mythology, the Fuzhu is a mythical deer with four horns that appears during periods of flood.
Specific types of deer and their symbolism
If we look at specific types of deer, then there are some general patterns that emerge in their symbolism. 
White-tailed deer are native to North America, Central America, and South America. They are often associated with purity and innocence, a connection to the spirit world, and respect for the natural order.
Red Deer are native to most of Europe, the Caucasus Mountains region, Anatolia, Iran, parts of western Asia, and the Atlas Mountains of Northern Africa. They are the only living species of deer to live on any part of the African continent. They have associations with royalty and kingship, as well as the hunt. They are often used on coats of arms as a symbol of nobility.
Reindeer (Caribou) have close connections to winter due to our modern Christmas traditions. But they also have great cultural significance in Arctic and subarctic cultures.  They are native to the Arctic, subarctic, tundra, boreal, and mountainous regions of Northern Europe, Siberia, and North America. They are known for their endurance and adaptability, as well as safe journeying and strength in harsh conditions.
Fallow Deer are known as peaceful and gentle. They are widespread in England, Wales, Ireland and southern Scotland but are an introduced species. Some studies suggest they are only native to Turkey. The fallow deer is probably what you picture when someone says the words “doe-eyed.” They are associated with grace and beauty and often appear in post-Norman mediaeval literature.
Moose (Elk) are considered symbols of strength, resilience, and adaptability. They are large, with imposing antlers which is what makes them such an iconic image. They are native to North America, Canda, and Northern Eurasia, but they are also associated (by name only) with the Irish Elk, an extinct giant deer known for the enormous span of its antlers (a disproven urban legend claims that the Irish Elk went extinct because its antlers grew too wide and heavy for its head and neck to support it).
How deer are used in certain genres
In Fantasy, deer are often magical creatures or shapeshifters. They can be spirit guides or familiars, often appearing to characters in dreams. The white stag and the brown doe are two often-used images in these settings.
In Romance novels, deer are often used as symbols of love and courtship. Deer-like descriptions are often used when describing characters, and hunting metaphors are often used to represent the romantic pursuit.
In Horror and Thriller novels, encounters with deer are often uncanny and frightening. They are used as harbingers of the supernatural, appear in dreams as a sign or portent of something to come, and often subvert traditional deer symbolism for dramatic effect.
In Literary Fiction, deer are often used as metaphors for the human experience. They can be used to represent character growth or epiphanies by exploring the relationship between mankind and nature.
How can you use deer symbolism in your own writing?
Deer can be used as the basis for a theme or motif in your work. They also offer tried-and-tested ways of incorporating visual storytelling into your imagery by using well-known associations.
Cultural considerations are good to consider in advance of incorporating symbolism. If you want to borrow from existing cultural traditions, then it’s essential to make sure you research and respect those cultural beliefs. Avoid appropriation, and be sure you strike the right balance between traditional symbolism and personal interpretation. There is nothing wrong with interpretation, but it is important to be respectful when borrowing from another person’s culture.
There are also new and interesting ways you can use your own experiences to develop your own symbolism. You can use deer as a symbol to explore themes of conservation and environmental protection. In Station Eleven by Emily St John Mandel, she uses deer as a symbol of the return of nature in a post-human world. They can also be used to comment on urban expansion and habitat loss, and with enough research, you can use a scientific understanding of their behaviours to build your own mythology.

I decided to make two designs as I couldn't choose which one I liked more. So you'll get both of them :DD
Also sorry if he looks a bit unfinished, he was made first and I didn't plan on making more of these. Or sharing them, but I'm happy he gets to see the light of day.
Design 1:
Ok so #1 I made it obvious he is mixed. It's really not that hard to do, I'm looking at you Vivzie. There isn't much more to this change other than that. You can't just slap a label on a character and call that representation.
I also wanted him to be more uncanny. He has very dilated pupils as well as a more elongated body. His teeth are also red now which I think comes across as cannibal more than his original yellow chompers.
I made the bullet wound into a scar as I think the way sinners died would be more impactful to their appearance than they are in the show. His deer imagery is more prominent as well. His legs are obviously more deer like as well as his antlers. I put the ears on the side of his head to make them not blend into his hair.
Design 2:
Not much is different aside from the first one, just his skull. This is the one where I went for a more intimidating approach, but I kept the uncanniness as well.
He has the skull of a deer now, with a bullet hole in the center. I gave him carnivorous teeth, showing how he was both the hunted and the hunter. The permanent grin is interpreted as the skull being wedged open, cracking into one.
It's also implied that he has a secondary face under it. Interpret that as you will, I think the mystery is fun. You can see his teeth and eyes.
Both:
Made the clothes more accurate to his time period, and less harsh on the eyes. I wanted to keep him red color scheme but I gave it more variety. The yellow is gone all together aside from his monocle.
He has skeletal gloves now and I changed the design of his radio, his voice actually projects out of it rather than him talking into it. I don't think his mouth moves when he talks in either design. He always has that eerie grin, eyes unblinking.
My biggest change was the gaping hole in his torso, honestly mainly just because it adds a pop of color and looks fucking cool. It's like a soul cage! One literally growing out of his body, the bars are made of ribs. I also like the idea of him eating people souls, good reason for sinners to be scared of him.
He was fun to redesign!! And I hope I did him some justice without making him not feel like the same character.
IMPORTANT: I'm not whaling on the of designs out of malice, these are PERSONAL critiques that aren't intended for animation. I like the series and am doing this out of a love for character design.

i'm curious: what all inspired you to make the mercs what supernatural beings they are in monsterous intent?
Originally it was just gonna be Demo the werewolf and that's it, but eventually the idea to make it into a whole-ass AU happened, and it kinda got silly from there. For Scout I'll be honest it was largely because I freakin' love fauns and satyrs. Always have. And modern deer-style fauns are absolutely adorable, and I really like the combination of cute, horny, and impulse-driven, which is very Scout. Plus a monster form that messes with his legs seemed Right for the guy whose job is Runs Fast. I also project onto him a little bit let us be honest with ourselves here. (I also cannot shut up clearly have adhd and am the littlest sibling who constantly feels inadequate and like I gotta prove myself.)
With Soldier, it's the whole yelling at severed heads on a fence thing from Meet the Soldier. What if the reason he had those severed heads wasn't just to fake an audience, but because he collects them? Dullahans and headless, what if he uses those heads to disguise himself? I read up on the actual folklore and then played with it A Lot, plus Cephalophores (depictions of beheaded saints carrying their own heads in their hands) are really cool imagery, so I went with it. Plus while in actual Irish folklore Dullahans are Faeries, they're also very death-focused, and you'll see them depicted as undead in media a lot, and with Merasmus being the guy he is, the connection just Worked. Basically canon gave me a really easy lay-up of a monster type for Soldier, lol. And Silas Mann jokes as a bonus. Gods help us if Soldier ever gets a horse. (I totally wanna give him a whip made of a human spine eventually.)
Pyro took a while to figure out. I knew I wanted him to be something that couldn't disguise himself easily, hence always being in the gasmask, but I hemmed and hawwed a lot. Someone (I wish I remembered who) pointed me to djinn and how they're made of "smokeless flame" in myth, so I did a bunch of reading and, again, kind of made my version for this AU. I try to make sure to put a lot of the actual real-world folklore and myth in, but also give stuff its own fun little spin, too. :3
Demo being a werewolf was the whole point, tbh. When I first wrote Predation, it was because there was a little bit of werewolf smut in the fandom, but all of it made Sniper the werewolf. I get the vibes, but Demo actually had a wolfman cosmetic set for Halloween! It only made sense he'd get to be the werewolf! Since Sniper had the monster (vampire) hunter costume, he got to be the guy "hunting" werewolf!Demo, and that was how it all got started.
For Engie I couldn't think of a monstrous transformation that would feel right, and since he was the skeptic in Predation, it only made sense that he'd be very unknowledgable and uninvested in the supernatural (at least until he had to be involved with it lol) so instead I just leaned into the transhumanist vibe that Engie sometimes has and went hard on him slowly fashioning himself into a cyborg. Pyro's apprehensions vs. Engie's views mirror the way I in real life am of two minds about properly advanced cybernetics vs. removing healthy body parts.
Heavy was the first after Demo, with Sniper pointing out he was half-jotun in The Good Folk. I knew I wanted him to be a giant of some sort, and with his Siberian background and cold and ice vibes, being part frost giant just seemed right, yanno? Plus the eventual opportunity for big size difference play was something I couldn't resist. Giant man, giant everything. owo
Medic was a tough one for a while, too. Him taking up magic was directly because of his line from the Merasmus boss fight event, where he goes "I must learn this black magic!" and generally being hype about all the magic bullshit lol. Him being a garuda was harder. I knew I wanted to give him wings; that was never a doubt lbr I am a SUCKER for winged humanoids and doubly so winged Medic. Finding the right monster was the hard part. I didn't wanna go harpy simply because Scout was already a Roman monster and got turned by a Greek one, and I didn't wanna double-dip in those mythological waters. And in Buddhist traditions, Garuda are a type of inhuman creature that appear either as giant birds or anthropomorphic birds. My first exposure to the name was as random bird monsters in Final Fantasy games, lol. So I figured Medic going for that and still kinda fucking it up (being a dove rather than a brahminy kite) would be a fun way to make him a bird man off the beaten path.
Sniper being a monsterfucking human, as mentioned above, was inspired by his vampire hunter halloween costume, lol. Also because lbr out of all of them he seems most like the kind of guy who would do a stakeout to get railed by a werewolf.
Spy needed to be a trickster. That was imperative. Ideally a shapeshifter. Nothing from French folklore jumped out at me enough that I wanted to use it, and finally I gave in and went with one of my favourite monsters: kitsune. Plus it gave me an excuse to be a weeb and my god I look for any excuse there. (I'm not a huge anime/manga weeb I'm a huge language/culture/food weeb lol) It ended up working in my favour too since him not even actually being a human French dude but a Japanese fox who cannot create human children means that the Spy Is Scout's Dad reveal in 2017 didn't hit MI nearly as hard as it could have, lol. Thank fuck, really. Also instead it lead to a hilariously squicky misunderstanding on RED Demo's part lol.
Spy's a monster but he's not a monster, Tav, jeez.
Also: Miss P as a human diviner just makes sense. In addition to her being a mage fitting in the world and giving Medic another, better role model than just Merasmus, it makes sense what with half of her job being surveillance of and managing the teams!

Another episode, another bath. "Insolubilia" gave us yet another bath scene, and some more striking stag imagery.

Men in this show feel free to expose themselves to women without their consent, but things may not go so well if the situation is reversed.
Actaeon was the hunter from Greek mythology who saw Artemis (Diana) naked as she bathed, and was turned into a stag to prevent him from speaking of it to anyone. He was then killed and devoured by his own hunting dogs, who failed to recognize their master.

The myth is a parallel to Tiresias seeing Athena bathing, and being struck blind.
They are essentially twin punishment myths, and they demonstrate the power of the feminine as well as the transformative power of water. As soon as Diana splashes water on Actaeon, his transformation begins.

In this episode, we see a large mural of a stag at the hospital, as Dot comforts Scotty and says, "There's no such thing as demons, only men."

We also see ranch hands skinning several deer, and throwing the organs to a dog. One of the deer has already been skinned, and its coat looks similar to Roy's iconic jacket.

We have previously seen an image that looks like a man sprouting antlers, in the 16th century flashback, when the priest is positioned directly in front of antlers on the wall.

Fenrir and Dragon Age
I'm not seeing a very strong link between Fenrir and either Fenris OR Solas. A lot of people like to talk about that connection but IMHO it's not a very strong one.
There's a superficial similarity, but if you actually read about Fenrir, there aren't a lot of in-depth markers.
But I also don't like the Halla and Wolf imagery either. Deer don't hunt. And Solas said 'hunt well' to the Inquisitor. He doesn't see her as prey. A partner, perhaps. Or a powerful hunter in her own right. IE: Another wolf.
If it's for you, that's cool. Neither of those works for me.

venison's theme is cannibalism (bones, flesh) and deer/stag, the shocking effect of having a herbivore eat meat -> prey becomes predator -> cute thing is scary now, simplified
i made them specifically to parallel pavia in many aspects, so they do share themes certain themes while also being on entirely opposite ends, especially when it comes to freedom/individuality - what with pavia being a lone wolf and an individual who rejects society and lives outside of it, while venison is a very codependent and social individual who will gladly allow others to use them in exchange of that feeling of "belonging". and the two are still hypocrites, because wolves live in close tight knit packs, theres no real lone wolves. and venison ultimately lives for their own selfish whims, because being codependent is just a means to an end, and arent as subservient and submissive as they paint themself
then theres the subject of venison's historical themes
their undimo is a white, glowing and magical stag made out of bones which is based on the lampong - a creature from filipino myths and folklore, a dwarf shepherd that is said to protect other deer by turning into one
the psychube assigned specifically to them is called "the stag hunt" which alludes to that one painting - the stag hunt of frederick iii, elector of saxony by lucas cranach. which is just a fun connection to venison's backstory, but has no fucking ties whatsoever with frederick iii nor lucas cranach. so hm. hmmmm. tying themes of religious imagery and blind devotion through frederick iii's might be a reach. unsure. UNCLEAR. gotta look into it later
the psychube is also just called "Stag Hunt" which instead alludes to the trust dilemma by the same name, two hunters must choose between hunting down a hare or a stag, independently and without knowing the other's choice. but to hunt down a stag they must do it together. so its like the prisoners dilemma but in the stag hunt someone always ends up winning regardless of the combination of choices. something something, venison's opportunistic (and parasitic) behaviour and that same vibe that junko enoshima and jobu tupaki had going on of always, always coming out on top no matter what even if they're the ones suffering bc the end goal was always suffering
venison is also a mineral arcanist bc mineral arcanists seem to be aligned with. themes of death? cristallo, obvious deteriorating health. bette, metaphorical death of the self since she's treated as a cheap replacement within the industry. eternity, she just. doesnt die, doomed to be eternal. horrorpedia, death and horror, obviously. mondlicht, her whole village is in constant danger of dying bc of wolves, kids are raised as hunters. ms moissan's life being affected by war ("but what about click then? click is a spirit arcanist by virtue of being a DEAD GHOST GUY, bc supernatural themes and stuff being the ticket to spirit arcanists). necrologist. yeah pretty obvious.
but thats also just a superficial observation bc i havent dissected afflatus influence yet. mineral arcanum could be something related to being stagnant, stuck, an inmovable object. things that are assured, sure as death. it would align better with some characters like sonetto too
still, venison's connection to being a mineral arcanists, within this context and with this current explanation, is easy bc they're - at heart - a scavenger animal, they thrive in death and are surrounded by it. the association of cannibalism = love and protection and care in their brain means that they're constantly trying to prove or show their love thru violence, they eat those they love bc nothing will bring people closer than death and digestion, basically
but venison is also a goddamn awful person with a very unstable and volatile mind, so this association has just become an excuse to justify their cannibalism. this is why they "fall in love" with all of their targets, why they write love letters and why theyre so delusional, creating one-sided relationships that they fully believe in

I remember there being an ask about what animals the ROs would be, but I'm having trouble finding it; plus, I don't remember if Roswhen or Elan were included. (Francisco definitely was, though) Could you maybe find it or go over that idea again? Some of it was pretty interesting, from what I remember.
Absolutely! I'll rewrite it here, to elaborate a little since there weren't that many details in my first reply (and indeed - Roswhen and Elan weren't added to the mix back then.) If I recall correctly, I was rather tired when I answered it back then.
The Physician would be a fox (even though she certainly got her entire bird-imagery going on, some bird would fit her as well.) They got the reputation of being cunning after all, and she got some cunning. Also because they tend to be quite solitary animals, and can be both intelligent and a little bit silly.
Aubrey is, of course, a cat. A wild, ferocious little biter. A hunter who goes his very own way and does what he wishes, who is also playful but loves his leisure time.
Vesa is an unusually dangerous squirrel. Active, bold, sociable, cute, and energetic, but with some aggression to her from time to time. A hungry wolf suits her very well, too.
Narciso is a bat - he's The Bat, after all, but he's also a 'wolf in sheep's clothing;' seemingly very nice and gentle, but with a highly dangerous streak. He isn't group oriented like a wolf, though. I was thinking more about the expression itself when I gave him that animal.
Roswhen is a cute, friendly, and curious rabbit. They can be a bit silly, and Roshwhen likes to be a bit silly, too.
Elan has been called a puppy more than once, and yes, there is some puppy to him. Aside from that, I'll say deer. They're often skittish and don't like loud noises and sudden movements, and also, he used to work in the forest, so the entire forest-thing suits, too.
I mentioned Francesco being a shapeshifter - a peacock, a lynx, and a sad, wet little puppy.

I am here to add onto your mh animal headcannons because I love that kinda stuff. I think they are all pretty spot on, but consider this:
I really like your hawk idea for Brian but I have always seen him as a Coyote. Kind of a scraggly animal but they are known tricksters in media almost like a fox but more gruff and wild. He also just has dog energy. Like bro was probably a golden retriever kinda man before shit went down. Him as a cackling Coyote just mmmm. Makes sense.
Tim is hard, but i always stray away from bears for him. It just doesn't fit to me or make sense. He would be either a Black Wolf, a Wild Boar, or something along the lines of a Badger. Black Wolf because he is predatory and mysterious and all that jazz. Also if he was a Wolf it would make the main totheark guys a nice pack of dogs to tie it together. Boar or Badger because of his aggressiveness and his tackle everything mindset as Masky and his leave me alone demeanor. I could go on and on but I won't.
Jay is so much a little slinky rodent but also a blue Jay because uhh. Jay. BLUE JAY. GET IT AHAHAH. But like legitimately because it just fits him. Especially the curiosity they have. Also since blue Jays are in the corvid family it makes sense since those birds usually are known to follow wolves.
Alex as a buck is great. Love it. Same with Amy.
Mouse Jessica is on par with Mousely. We love it.
Sarah I can also see as a rabbit but honestly owl is great.
Seth as a white wolf is great but for him I imagine a smaller dog such as a fox. If we are to all agree on the seth is the third totheark member then its fitting because He's very intelligent and misleading and also a trickster. Also foxes are in many legends and stories so it just adds to the mystery.

New animal headcannon
The Operator!
This one is not at all well thought out in my head and I really want to see what other people think for it.
My first thought is a bald eagle just because they are bid symbols and because of the white face. But something along the lines of a vulture could make sense as well. Or even a big ass snake. Idk. Some sort of large predator that seems like the rest but is just wrong. Trying to think of animals that are tall and blend in with the woods. Deer come to mind cause the antlers look like branches but we already have two deer. Maybe an elk? Too bulky tho. And then the obvious answer. A swarm of white hornets. That would be a cool way to tie in the name. Idk. Help me out here.

OHHHH YES i love these. now that you mention it, coyote brian is such a good idea, i do really like that. I also like your idea of totheark being a little dog trio lolol, tho idk i just love tim being a bear so much i cant help it. big and fluffy, looks so cute and huggable. but could kill and maim. And jay as a blue jay is also one i considered lolol. but omggg i love your idea for the operator being a vulture, but i also get what you mean about something that just doesnt fit with the others. hmmm. I know @mersei47 had the idea of the operator being a hunter which is FUN and i do love, but if we're making them all animals.... hm. i also considered a moose or an elk because i really like the antler imagery. maybe a moose? or vulture? unsure...
but yes, i definitely enjoyed!!! loved reading this

Some interesting developments in the Rise of the Runelords campaign @self-loving-vampire is running. We’re looking for some information discovered by two dwarves that vanished on an expedition into the mountains, and we just found what appears to be their base camp. We killed an undead treant sort of creature outside, and heard a sound like a dying elk in the distance shortly thereafter. As we entered the cabin, an intense snowstorm whipped up with unnatural speed. We closed the door to keep out the cold and explored the inside of the long-abandoned cabin, until the source of the storm came clear. A voice started speaking into our heads about ripping and tearing and eating flesh, and one of the party members began seeing a decaying humanoid deer-like creature in the corners of his vision. Though in-game the party may not quite have figured it out yet, from this point it’s pretty obvious we’re being attacked by a wendigo.
It’s honestly kinda nostalgic, as one of the very first D&D encounters I remember ever feeling especially threatened by also entailed the party (in this case just my character and one other) being hunted through a winter landscape by a small group of the very same monsters (albeit probably much lower level). That adventure even took us into an abandoned cabin, this one used by some hunters instead of an exploratory expedition. It’s bringing back some fun and oddly comfortable memories of the very first D&D campaign I played with my girlfriend, and specifically an adventure I undertook with my other closest friend.
It’s hard to say whether this is real or placebo, or even just a factor of me thinking more about the area and environment, but I feel like I’m getting more flashes of visual imagery than I usually do thinking about things. It’s enjoyable, and it kind of helps add to that odd sense of comfort.
