Was thinking about an 'alternate universe' where a young Sasuke, in the absence of guidance on how to carry out his clan traditions, tries to connect to his fractured identity by spending time in the Naka Shrine and accidentally summons the ghost/spirit of Izuna who hears his cries of injustice and grief from the other side.

Truthfully, I don't know why it would be Izuna in particular, but I'm kind of playing around with the idea that his death was viewed as so unjustifiable and horrific by Madara that Madara's devastation over it prevented Izuna's spirit from properly/completely passing over into the Pure Lands. So, Izuna's spirit remains in this unaware-but-restless state and one day it materializes to answer the call of another Uchiha (who also just so happens to be an Indra transmigrant, like Madara, if we want to go there... maybe their emotions carry extra weight and power within the spiritual world) now trying to process his own unimaginable grief, this time over the death of his entire family, bloodline, and culture. Thus they become bound to one another (for better or worse) and Izuna is, from then on, always there, carried by (and only visible to) Sasuke on his journey...

Maybe they both come to believe that if they get justice for the clan (which they initially believe is by killing Itachi, 'the kinslayer') then Izuna will finally be freed and Sasuke will have done right by his family and avenged them. But really, I think what would actually be keeping Izuna 'stuck' is the plan that evolved (at least partially) from Madara's grief over his death, Project Tsukuyomi... thus their quest expands and the two then need to figure out how to alleviate Madara's guilt/sense of loss over Izuna's death and rekindle his feelings of hope in the world once more (ie. stopping the plan). Somehow, lol.

And I think Izuna would be a fun character to do with this with because there's so little we truly know about him, but so much we can infer due to his impact on other characters' actions/story events.

Idk, in my opinion there's just a lot of opportunity here for a good mix of heart and comedy, especially with Izuna as a more defined character that has a little more freedom than other characters to be molded. I also think having someone Sasuke can connect to, that's from his clan (but is also still deceased and a reminder of how alone he is, ie. end of the day Izuna is still a ghost, an ancestral relic of the now-dying clan) would have a profound effect on him.

It'd almost be like his own inner Kurama voice except Izuna provides no chakra or power amps, only scathing commentary on how much he hates the injustices of the village (and its Senju leadership) lol. Also, I like to think his reactions to all the in-universe stories about 'Madara's deeds' (which is really Obito) would be entertaining.

Ok I'm thinking about kabuto backstory again and thinking about how unfair and fucked up it all is like

I'm just like. How fucked up is it to threaten these people into working as spies for you "for the good of Konoha", and then decide that these people (who have given NO INDICATION of intending to betray Konoha) are too good at being spies and thus Too Dangerous and should be killed for it. But no he can't just kill them in a normal way. He had to manufacture an entire scenario so that they'd kill EACH OTHER while making the mom not recognize him (with the express purpose of breaking the kid's spirit) like BROOOOOO I know you ordered the whole Uchiha clan to be massacred (conducting genocide for the sake of 'peace') actually now that I think about it he ordered this of itachi. Ordered him to kill his own family. Of course Danzo would get off on making a mother and son kill each other "for the good of Konoha" he's almost fucking cartoon villain level of horrible past the point of logic EXCEPT there really are people this awful that have existed. Plenty of them. And they have also justified it as being "for the good of [nation]" like that's the Thing, he's a war hungry nationalist that has decided He Knows Best so he's going to fuck up SO many people's lives, up to and including his own damn citizens!!!! And this bitch thinks he deserves to be kage?!?!?! Fucking Hiruzen letting him run wild like this. He knew Danzo was stealing children and indoctrinating them into a murder cult (where, keep in mind, he purposefully raises kids in pairs so they view each other as family AND THEN ORDERS THEM TO KILL EACH OTHER)(AGAIN!!!! with the family killing, what is his PROBLEM) but Hiruzen just let it fucking happen. Madara stumbled into the alleyway, catching his breath. The blood on his uniform would stain. He’d have to talk with Anzu about that tomorrow. He couldn’t tell if it was sweat or blood dripping down his face as he wiped it away with the back of his hand. 

It was late. The street lights were too bright for him but he didn’t have much choice. He prayed to whatever god was out there that nobody would be out right now. 

He tripped over his own feet from the exhaustion and pushed someone in the street to the ground. He began apologizing, words slurring together before that all too familiar voice rang out. 

“Mama?” She asked, voice gentle. “What’s going on?” 

Madara finally looked up at the person under him. Oh how he wished to disappear. He tried so hard to hide this from her and yet-- 

“It’s nothing, my beautiful daughter.” He reaches out to brush her cheek with his hand in a comforting gesture, but she pushes him away. He rolls off of her, onto his back on the sidewalk. 

“You can’t lie to me like this, Mama.” She doesn’t sound angry. He closes his eyes and takes a deep breath, gathering his thoughts. 

“Please, don’t worry about it. I’m okay, I promise, Arashi-san.” 

She grabs his hand and pulls him up to his feet. “This is your Double Face uniform, isn’t it.” 

It wasn’t a question. She knew exactly what it was. He simply nods, slumping into her shoulder. His body is practically screaming to lay down and sleep. 

“I’m sorry you found out this way. I never--” 

“Why?” 

It was a simple question she had asked. Why hadn’t he trusted her? Why did he want to hide so much of himself from the people who care about him? 

Why didn’t he allow himself to get closer to other people? 

“I don’t know.” He’s uncharacteristically honest. He needs to look himself over for wounds. He can still feel his side wet with something that he hoped wasn’t his own blood. 

“Let’s at least get you back to Seisoukan, okay?” She’s still so gentle and shuffles forward with him practically draped over her. 

“Yeah, okay.” 

He would inevitably have to talk with her later, he knew that. She saw too much. But for now, he was tired, exhausted, practically falling over and she just wanted to make sure he got somewhere safe for the night. 

The two of them limped down the street until they finally reached Seisoukan. 

“Can you make it back to your dorm?” She asked, gently peeling him off of her. He still had someone he needed to talk with. 

“Yeah, I’ll be fine. Goodnight, Arashi-san.” He winced as he stood up, whatever injury was in his side clearly needed to be looked at tonight. He hoped that he could make it to Rei’s dorm in a coherent manner. Thank god for the elevator. 

“Goodnight, Mama.” Arashi rubs his shoulder comfortingly before turning around to go back to her own dorm.

Hmmm my perception of izuna... Not my fav uchiha, that'd be Shisui, but i'm impressed you found so many mangacaps of him without mixing him up with sasuke!! I cannot differentiate the two of them out of context. I do not remember any scenes with him except the one when he was in the river with madara and the other guys (forgot their names) when they were younger. I feel for you that he died:( (or no he didn't, by the looks of the ofc cannon fics you read) must be frustrating at times to have seen him so little in the og manga!!
