Fly the Nest by stygianwriter (StygianRiver) ( @stygianwriter )
Kaito never would've stopped being a phantom thief if it was up to him, but it's not. He's thrown into obscurity head-first.
He doesn't stop being shot at. Complete, 80k words.
*** ** * ** ***
Part 2:
"How did you deal with it?" she asks. It's uncomfortable to admit her own part in causing a grief like this, but she pushes on. "Knowing I would leave?" "We were worried, of course," her mom says. "Even your sister, though she wouldn't admit it, since she'd want to leave eventually, too. Your father and I talked at length. Did we do something wrong? Did we raise you to want to flee this house?" The words curl around Chikage's heart and ring familiar. They're hers, too. Her mother gives a dry laugh. "And then when we got over ourselves, we still worried. Would you ever send letters? Would you be okay out there in the wild world, with nothing to tie you down?" Chikage realizes with a start that she hadn't once thought that Kaito would be incapable of caring for himself. If it was Toichi, maybe she would've. Not Kaito. She's seen Toichi at his worst, where she didn't dare leave him alone, where he wouldn't bother with making sure he ate or slept or survived. Kaito has always been okay, no matter what. Kaito adapts. "In the end," her mom says, "the choice wasn't mine, and it wasn't your father's, and it wasn't your sister's. We could worry and worry and hope, but we could never keep you. It wasn't right to keep you." Chikage stays quiet. For the first time in years, she doesn't have the right response on her tongue. "You were capable of making your own choices, and this is the path you chose, and we could do nothing more but accept it."

Okay.... Let's analyze what happened in dcmk these last few weeks. Obvious SPOLIERS will be commented so you know.
Tumblr media
> Appearance of Aoko's mother in Magic Kaito.
Where was she all this time? Why did she never appear or even show a sign of life? She didn't even call her daughter on her birthday... She appears so oblivious to everything, she didn't even know who Kaitou Kid was since her husband has always been obsessed with trying to catch this thief for YEARS. It seems like Gosho just randomly placed her in the story without trying to connect with the canon, it's almost as if she was a character outside of her original manga.
> Film 27 and its breaks in logic and common sense.
After all these years, Gosho decided to go against everything he had already said and made the Kaishin to be cousins, not only ruining a unique relationship (whether you shipped or not) but also bringing plot holes and contradictions in the story. If they are cousins what's the excuse for them never trying to even interact before? Why was it that when Yukiko first met Kaito, she never acted like she was related to her? The same with Toichi, she always talked about him as just her teacher and NOTHING more than that, it doesn't make sense to put that in the story now. Why did Kaito never even have support from his family? Not even showing up at Toichi's symbolic funeral? How come Yusaku never went to talk to his late brother's family, even if he knew the truth KAITO DIDN'T KNOW...
No one even considered his feelings...
> All the bullshit involving Kaishin.
The biggest problem for me about them being cousins is not just because of the ship but because of all the history and construction they had. It's as if everything that's different about them is summed up in the simple fact that they're related. But Kaishin has always had something unique, something that Gosho himself defined as "a mysterious bond". Them not having the slightest type of relationship made everything so unique, a connection that only the two of them could have together, one would easily understand the other even though they were complete strangers. Now I feel like they want to throw that away.
> TOICHI KUROBA AND MY HATE FOR HIM.
Gosho had already said that Toichi was possibly alive but the confirmation brought me a wave of anger and contempt that I had never felt for any other dcmk character (even bo). Let's think about Kaito in this whole story:
• lost his father when he was just a child and is still traumatized by it today.
• for 8 FUCKING YEARS he discovers that his father's death was never an accident but a murder.
• His father was actually an internationally wanted thief who was after a precious stone capable of bringing immortality.
• he steps into his father's shoes as KID and decides to try to find out for himself what happened to his father, who killed him and why.
• now there is a criminal organization that thinks he is the KID who didn't really die and they are trying to kill him once and for all.
• he decides to put himself at risk looking for Pandora, being something belonging to the organization and the police themselves.
• a lot of people hate him, regardless of whether he hurts people or not.
• more and more he becomes more and more removed from everything and becomes burdened with the KID charade.
• his own mother doesn't care about him, on the contrary, it seems like she likes to make things even more difficult for her son (she disguised herself as her dead ex-husband just to screw with her son's head, that's sickening to say the least).
• everything Kaito does is because of his father's murder, he never wanted to be KID, he never liked stealing, he doesn't do any of that for pleasure (except when it involves a certain mini detective but that's not the focus now ).
• and in the end his father was ALIVE all this time, doing who knows what while his son was risking his life because of him... BRO...
This whole thing is insane. And not in a good way.

Kaito now has an excuse to have someone else in his social circle!!! AND THIS TIME IT'S SOMEONE WHO DOES KNOW ABOUT KID!!!
I know everyone is focused on the chaos but let's look at something positive.
Kaito is a character who stands out for being asocial and having only one friend, Aoko. Keiko is Aoko's friend who occasionally talks to Kaito and he doesn't trust Hakuba or Akako to consider them friends. They're more like "the annoying people who won't leave me alone." Jii is his only trusted person and who he should not lie to about his double life.
Kaito Kuroba is terribly alone on this journey.
We have all at some point thought that he needs more allies or friends.
And, perhaps, Shinichi being his cousin is the perfect excuse to have someone else in his circle. Let's remember that, in general, neither of them has a real reason to interact in their normal lives. The only times they interact is when someone needs something or a robbery. Nothing else. It is an interaction purely of convenience. But now they DO have an excuse to socialize outside of this "relationship of convenience." IT'S MORE!! SHINICHI IS THE ONLY MEMBER OF HIS FAMILY WHO IS IN THE COUNTRY AND WHO HE CAN TURN TO IF HE WANTS!! Kaito's mother is out of the country and when she answers calls, she is usually not the best person to talk to. (and things would be more complicated if she KNEW that a certain person was still alive!) His father... We don't talk about Toichi for now 😒 And his uncles? I highly doubt they are paying attention to their lives.
So yes, Shinichi is the only member of his family who he can count on a little more than the rest. (Which isn't much but it's something. What depress.)
So yeah, I think this can be a good thing for Kaito. He needs more trustworthy people.

ANOTHER "Fanfic Search Help" Request because I'm at the end of my rope and very desperate for some good ol' nostalgic read. Pls help me.
Kaishin pairing.
DCMK fandom.
Angsty and Dark.
Toichi lives sort-of???
Other world mishaps.
Tumblr media
This time the plot is mostly about Kaito Kuroba being sent to another world where the BO didn't ruin his life. I say "mostly" because this is a series of fics in AO3 and some of them focus on Shinichi's P.O.V. too. The biggest (heart) kicker is that in their original world, the BO killed off each of their friends and family one by one until it's just the two of them against the world with nothing but a few small tokens to remember each person they lost by. The two of them were always together, but they were in too much danger to prioritize the idea of being "together". Still, Kaito and Shinichi were each other's lifeline. At their last chance to keep Pandora away from the Crows, Shinichi made a choice that had him be disguised as Kaitou KID while he paralyzes Kaito from following so he, instead, can die in the thief's place. A sequence of mourning and magical mishaps happen after, which led to Kaito being sent to a world where BOTH his parents were still alive, but there's another him in it too. One who still has a crush on Aoko and had no reason to take on the KID mantle from his father. While he gathers his bearings in this new reality where he still has people to care for him, we later learn that another Shinichi exist here too. One that never took the Apotoxin, but is somehow just as miserable as his dead counterpart. Mostly homeschooled, this Shinichi never grew up being viewed as a "great detective" rather more as a "corpse magnet weirdo" who has no friends and got involved in an incident in his childhood that would traumatize anyone (except for one indigo eyed boy he met then who was adamant about his dad rescuing them. Huh... He wonders how that kid's doing now). Bullied and distant from even Ran and Sonoko, he lacks the confidence and self-assurance of our Shinichi who takes pride in the truth. Rather, this one is more afraid and saddened by it and is mocked for his bluntness. That's why this new world's Kaito never heard much of this Shinichi too, because he's not featured in the news for solving cases, but he's been ostracized for it. I just love the idea of how different people could turn out to be with just a change of perspective. This Shinichi is still observant and cares for people's safety, but because of how he was viewed as a negative instead of a positive, in this world, his strengths became a weakness and what attracted our thief Kaito never got to shine. Changing their meeting and this Shinichi's personality instead to meek and lonely. Not as driven and assertive.
Last time I checked, it's not finished, but that's fine. I love the concept too much! My biggest fear is that it's been deleted.

Okay, I need to know why people were shocked that Kuroba Toichi was alive in movie 27, because first of all even if I hadn't known about the spoilers, that would've been my first guess upon watching Magic Kaito. Second there's literally this
Tumblr media
And no, the he can disguise as anyone is obviously a lie, that's not his mother even, because when they first met on the roof the guy that got revealed to be Kaito Corbeau was together with Nakamori inside the building
Tumblr media
Also, the guy didn't have a moustache even though it looked like it was Toichi, so this one that met with Kaito on the rooftop and then acted as a decoy later while the real Kaito Corbeau was inside the building, was definitely his mother
Tumblr media
Like they make us understand here, Kaito still says that those were two people, and they don't mention anything to indicate that the person on the hang glider was a dummy, like the ones Kaito uses, so yeah, it's obvious that those two were Chikage and Toichi, which makes it even more fucked up

this blog does not believe the most recent movie to be canon and while ik gosho takes inspiration from the movies and anime at times I will not be accepting that kaito’s dad is still alive bc that means kaito had to live most of his childhood with not one but TWO shitty parents and he doesn’t deserve that. at least if his dad remains dead he won’t ever have to question if his dad also actually loves him bc I’m sure he questions that with chikage. this is a kuroba chikage hate blog btw and will become a toichi hate blog if we end up taking the movie in as canon

DETECTIVE CONAN MOVIE 27 SPOILER!!!
.
.
.
Okay, so Kaito and Shinichi are cousins which is kinda sucks for me as a KaiShin shipper. I mean in hindsight I kinda see that one coming for a while but it still sucks for me nothing less. Not that it's gonna stop me from shipping KaiShin. I have ignored canon for years, why should I stop now lol?
But moving on! Forget the “Cousins Reveal”! I was livid with something else!
The actual suck thing that got revealed is actually the fact that Toichi might be alive. It is 100x worse than the “Cousins Reveal”. It is unnecessarily cruel to Kaito. It changes everything about Toichi as a character along with Chikage. It paints the dynamics and relationships between Kaito and his parents in a new light, a very bad one. It means both of Kaito's parents and Yusaku suck, extremely so. And Yukiko only barely dodged the bullet because we still don't know if she knows or not. Damn, both the Kudo family and the Kuroba family are messes and very very dysfunctional.

MAGIC KAITO TIME! Time to watch Kaito's story!
And the opening establishes why I don't like the main couple. Kaito's first action against Aoko is to invade her privacy. And her actions to Kaito is to attack him in turn (though personally I believe he deserved it for what he did to her).
Tumblr media
Kaito is a top confirmed.
This is the worst side of Kaito T-T I know it's a product of the time he was created but him perving on women's panties and then sharing that information with everyone for a 'laugh' is incredibly gross of him and it's no wonder half the fandom ignores he does it.
Tumblr media
...Nakamori that's pretty gay of you to count down the days until you met KID again. Sadly for you, your KID is dead.
This hurts. Knowing how much Kaito adored his father and then him doing what he does to his son <.<
I forgot Akai's VA also voices Toichi. Lol maybe that's why Yuusaku likes Akai, he reminds him of his brother.
Hello, Chikage! The worst mother in the world! I still can't believe that his phobia is weaponised against him and it's due to his mother that Aoko uses it. Instead of Chikage actually parenting her son so that he isn't gross towards women <.<
Let me guess, the magic show is just her riding her supposed-to-be-dead husband's dick-
Sorry, I hate the Kuroba's except for Kaito. They're terrible people and I will let that be known.
Jii, another victim of Toichi <.< I can't believe his poor assistant was left in the dark as well and put his own life on the line just to avenge him, and Toichi probably knew that he would and that Kaito would then take up his fucking mantle and my god I want to shoot Toichi.
FUCK ASS. GO BACK TO THE HOLE YOU BELONG IN TOICHI.
<.< And Chikage who definitely knows he's alive is teasing her son with the fucking knowledge and I am so MAD for Kaito.
...There is nothing funny about this, Gosho.

Ohh the idea of them pooling their skills together to create better disguises together is brilliant! the mimicking voices was probably Chikage (I imagine you'd have to have been training your voice constantly for a looooooong time to get the huge vocal range needed for that...I wonder how she became a thief actually, iirc she targeted corrupt corporations) but I bet it was Toichi who could do all kinds of interesting things with it - throwing his voice so it seems he's speaking from somewhere he isn't, making it seem as though it's far away or right behind you or simply making it carry (to his audience!), and yeah the acting through body language and reading ppl bc he needs to act like it was all part of the plan if a trick goes wrong and needed to improvise, and be able to read his audience to control where their attention goes and pull off misdirection. Also he probably does have very good spatial awareness, I cannot beLIEVE he went through LASER NET with a CAPE AND TOP HAT, he's RIDICULOUS
"as long as you're feeling agile enough" Chikage is, in fact, the one who was good at acrobatics while Toichi did a lame little side shuffle, she probably knew parkour too. Also ik it's not realistic but I was suddenly assaulted w the image of Chikage teaching Kaito and Toichi parkour and acrobatics together at the same time and Kaito being better at it than Toichi jhdgjsgf. bby Kaito probably used his parents as a jungle gym tbh, imagine talking to THE Kuroba Toichi, best magician in Japan (best magician in the WORLD Kaito corrects vehemently), all the while a 6 yo is doing a handstand on his shoulders or smth
Also I'm not surprised in the least that talking his way out was his plan, his advice to Kaito was "turn your critics into your fans" and THESE critics were out to ARREST THEM yet it STILL WORKED. absolute madlads
Tumblr media
YESSSS perfect!! the ultimate combination of skills!!! I wonder how she became a thief too. like. was she raised in it? was it circumstances? revenge turned vigilantism? IDK!!! clearly she was tired of it by the end, but she also clearly was having fun. pls I need the prequel so bad
I think about the hat a lot actually. it’s so tall. between the hat & cape and the bandages OVER THE EYES you have to admire the kurobas’ commitment to the aesthetic
LAME LITTLE SIDE SHUFFLE SHFHDHD poor man. but you’re absolutely right. LISTEN I’m absolutely certain that chikage taught kaito parkour by pretending it was gymnastics practice or obstacle courses or something similar, so it’s not a huge stretch At All to include toichi in those lessons. that stuff is so hard to learn as an adult, too… cue 6yo kaito doing full trapeze acrobat moves with chikage while toichi does his absolute BEST to learn a back handspring before his next heist
toichi turned “fake it til you make it” into a successful international phantom thief career, it’s a magician’s Greatest ability. now kaito can do it too but Also with the help of Actual Crime Skills (everyone say thank you chikage)
ventriloquism TOTALLY has practical use in magic. okok I’ve actually thought abt this before—for toichi to be the best magician ever, his shows would need to be WILD. bc irl magicians can do some insane things. I think he totally just did the most bamboozling acts where he’d make himself disappear and then have his voice appear from 5 directions at once, or use ventriloquism + magic to convince people that inanimate objects were alive and talking, stuff like that. worldwide magic sensation kuroba toichi disguises himself as you in real time and then he calls your mom using your voice while escaping from a straightjacket. etc.
WHICH OF COURSE leads DIRECTLY to kaito using this nonsense to become the most chaotic little nightmare child EVER (beloved). he is a terror to his classmates and his parents are actively part of the problem. aoko comes into the house like “kaito where are you” and she hears “I’m coming!” from upstairs and then he appears directly behind her. she screams and goes to tell on him to toichi but toichi does the same thing to her. chikage apologizes for both of them using their own voices. this is just what it’s like in the kuroba household. when kaito gets in trouble at school they’re 100% the kind of parents to be more disappointed that he got caught, not about the fact that he was building a confetti cannon at his desk

Y'know how I go on and on about how the movies are canon and I wouldn't be surprised if "Toichi and Yusaku are brothers" was in Gosho's notes from back when he first started coming up with ideas for Detective Conan when he was still writing Magic Kaito?
Funnily enough, there are a few things Gosho's done that would be just as happy (if not more so) if we could turn back the clock on them and tell him "you do not have to do that, actually." Weirdly, most of them are to do with the Magic Kaito side of things.
One: I... actually kind of liked when Kuroba Chikage was just a normal lady who was bringing up her son and she maybe knew about the fact that the house was full of magician's tricks but she loved her husband and oh dear, there always comes a time when the dove has grown up and needs to fly, there goes Kaito, isn't he looking good in white?
Basically the series has so many characters who are just "amazing, outstanding in their field" and/or "never home" that it would have been nice if Chikage had just... been a stay at home mom purely to be Kaito's support. But since Gosho came up with Phantom Lady, and since she spends so much time in Vegas, Kaito... doesn't have that from her. She's absent now.
Two: Toichi has been hinted at being alive since ch31-33/the Kaitou Corbeau heist, and... at the time I might have thought it was cool, but to be honest I've not held any desire or hope there the way I have for other things. The idea of Toichi as a ghost haunting the narrative (literally or figuratively) is much more compelling to me than that of him having left his family, faked his death, and then... encouraged his sixteen year old son to take up his mantle.
Toichi can (with all due respect) stay dead and the narrative is still good. As a dead dad, he's not a bad dad. He's just dead. The moment he's alive, he brings in all of these complications of "where were you" and "what were you doing" and all these messy emotions that Gosho's not been writing enough MK in order to address.
Three: Sometimes I think the addition of Nakamori Midoriko is a good one, and she's a fun character. Sometimes... I feel like I and the narrative could forget her easily, and nothing would change. If anything, that would make it better, because with Midoriko the Nakamoris feel distant, always missing each other, and barely talking.
Without her, there's the ability for Ginzo and Aoko to talk and to have a sense of bonding together. In a strange sense, if Midoriko were either actually separated from Ginzo and they're civil but don't talk (unlike Ran's parents, who do talk but aren't civil) or if she'd passed away years prior, there'd be a stronger and heavier sense of Ginzo being Aoko's only support and vice versa, making it have more weight when he can't make it to something she wants him to be there for, or if he forgets her birthday party.
I've seen in a few fics the idea of Kaito and Aoko bonding over Kaito having lost his father and Aoko having lost her mother, so it feels like they're even. When Kaito only has his mother (and later on, she starts travelling) and Aoko has... both parents... even if they work odd hours, it... makes it oddly uneven and unequal.
tl;dr?
Sometimes, by trying to involve characters, fill in gaps, or make a situation (often with a woman) more progressive, Gosho actually makes things more complicated in an unnecessary way, and it doesn't always actually work.

AO3 Masterlist
A masterlist of my ongoing fics on AO3 (One-shots and abandoned fics not included.)
My Hero Academia
breaking through the storm clouds
Kurogiri time-travel AU. "My name is Tenko." Tom - Tenko, all of five years old, looks up at Oboro with large, clear eyes. "Not Shigaraki Tomura. And you're not Kurogiri either." In which Kurogiri wakes up in the past and promptly decides to raise a young Tenko on his own, and maybe round up the rest of the League while he's at it, because they're really just a group of broken people who need hugs and guidance. Too bad he's still technically a high school student, and All For One isn't going to take kindly to his plans being interrupted.
Rekindling Fire
Dabi & Hawks time-travel AU "What about you, Todoroki? Are you going to follow Endeavor's footsteps when you grow up?" It isn't until he hears Endeavor that Dabi realizes he's being addressed. "Oh, me? No, I'm going to grow up to be a serial killer." His classmates stare. The teacher coughs awkwardly and changes the subject.
Other Fandoms
burns like the cold. [Fandom: Adventure Time / Fionna & Cake]
Fionna’s kiss doesn’t immediately kill the Winter King, the gang spends more time in the winter wonderland, and Simon uncovers one sinister secret after another in the seemingly perfect kingdom. Fionna slams her mug on the table, grinning, and Simon regrets all his life choices. "I have icicles where no icicles should be. Simon, magic is awesome." It's a horrible idea. Simon leans in anyway, meeting the Winter King halfway.
my father didn't tell me how to live. [Fandom: The Boys / Gen V]
Soldier Boy does raise Homelander, for a time. It changes everything and nothing. "You're alive," Homelander says. He doesn't know what he's feeling. What he should be feeling. "You're a fucking disappointment, John," his father says.
And straight on till morning. [Fandom: Once Upon A Time]
Cursed Pan AU. From time to time, Peter Pan visits the Enchanted Forest. It is unfortunate that he does so when the curse hits.
Aetatis. [Fandom: Naruto]
Hashirama & Madara time-travel AU, except Madara is still Kaguya's vessel. When Hashirama wakes up as a child again, he vows to protect his family and form a truce with the Uchiha sooner. When Madara wakes up in the same situation as a girl with a face suspiciously similar to the rabbit goddess who killed him, he wonders why the gods hate him.
Time and time again. [Fandom: Naruto]
Snippets of Aetatis
In the pale moonlight. [Fandom: Detective Conan / Magic Kaito]
Black Org! Kaito AU When Kuroba Toichi's stage explodes, it takes the magician and his wife with it. A young Kuroba Kaito is taken in by his father's remaining student... Sharon Vineyard. Years later, a phantom thief hits the streets of Japan, with an arsenal of black weapons. This changes the game for a certain shrunken detective.

I read your post about how you want better main villains than Snake/Jackal in the Magic Kaito world, to the point where you'd take anything. I'm aware you were probably partly joking but I rarely see the MK Organisation being talked about so I was curious about what you like and dislike about him? He is definitely the most senior member of the Organisation we've seen so far, though Spider seems to work relatively independently (as Hakuba is unaware of MK organisation despite thinking Kid would make good Spider bait), and is why some people call the the 'Animal Codename Organisation' it's actually just those 2 and Spider's questionably canon.
Touichi's death being fake partially ruined Snake as before he managed to kill Touichi, Kaito's predecessor and Yuusaku-like figure to surpass, and convince most people that such a famously great magician's death was a simple yet tragic magic accident - despite believing to have shot Touichi in the heart himself. I mean Touichi was a major international celebrity and had at least some friends in law enforcement. It's hilarious his solution to 'Touichi' reappearing was to shoot him again but as KID with the addition of a high fall (remember he can kind of fly...so not sure why you were surprised).
[I'm assuming Chikage and Jii disappearing was a mix of going on the hunt and laying low for a younger Kaito's protection. Assistants are mainly behind the scenes, children of celebrities are often somewhat hidden and Chikage is a disguise expert who has escaped the criminal underworld before with Touichi's help (all the easier if they don't know her history as the Phantom Lady, there's also the fact children and elders are underestimated too). Kaito becoming Kid being a future plan was so he'd be capable of protecting himself while hiding in plain sight as their is no escape from his family circumstances - might as well make sure he's as prepared as possible with minimal things to worry about but lots of hard tests to train him up. The Nakamoris obviously don't know anything about KID's identity that the MK Organisation doesn't so aren't worth the hassle of messing with high ranking law enforcement families, they're more useful alive as a distraction for KID]
Did he really shoot Toichi in the heart? I was never under the impression that Snake killed Toichi, I had always assumed it was someone else.
If that is the case, how the fuck did he manage to make it look like an accident.
Was it like:
The boss: Take care of this guy, make it looks like an accident.
Snake: On it, boss! *Shooting Toichi 28 times in the chest* Done.
*Puts a banana peel right next to the corpse*
And to answer your ask
What I like about him: In the early stages of MK, where everything is still comedic, so by having an overly evil goon as a threat is fitting because he matches Kaito's energy.
But as time went by, the stories became more serious. Hence, I can't take him seriously anymore.
Kaito KID is supposedly to be as smart as Shinichi. And Shinichi has been dealing with antagonists that are smart enough to be a threat.
Kaito's main obstacles are either Nakamori and his dumb police team or Snake and his dumb goons. (I'm not counting Hakuba because he's barely there)
And it's such a disrespect to Kaito's characters. He is goddam KAITO KID, I.Q 400, see-through everything.
True, there were a lot of interesting enemies in the past, but they were one-time only and won't be seen again.
I don't hate Snake; I just want a good-written villain.
As for Chikage and Jii, being absent for most of Kaito's life is to protect him from being recognized. While it could be an explanation, it would have been more efficient if she had taken him to Vegas with her. If the main goal is for him to be safe, planning for him to dress up as a dead man who is being pursued by a bloodthirsty killing organization that had killed him before is not what I'd call a smart move.
It doesn't make sense. If his identity as Kuroba Kaito is still secure. Why would he need to be dressing up as KID?
She could have just told him that he could possibly be in danger so that he would prepare himself for it. Without becoming KID.
Ps: Sorry if I sound aggressive. I'm not.

The poll going around reminded me about this post from February 2017 I made because of seeing so much Kudou hate. Funny thing is that I think it was soon after I made this post that I started looking into Toichi for rp muse opinions and the possibility of him being alive just. Destroyed most of the good feels Kaito's memories were giving him.
So, in the last seven years, most of my opinions are the same, except:
Toichi is alive, knows his son gallivants as Kid, has been in contact with other people who know he's alive, and is generally well accepted to be compost as far as fandom's image of him.
Chikage comes down a little as well, because Corbeau. Her lightly trying to convince her son to stop doesn't forgive the fact that she's not giving all of the information that would be relevant to what decision he'd make. Neither of the Kuroba's were decent parent quality to begin with, and more information has brought them down even more.
My opinion of Mary tanked significantly after this post was made, because she's the freaking adult secret agent, who knows full well the danger of the BO because they almost successfully killed her, and yet she sends her teenage daughter to investigate everything related to her condition. And even if she distrusts Shinichi so much to not even attempt to ally with him and instead steal his potential cure, then stop freaking sending your daughter who clearly trusts him to do all this. wtf. And that's also not going into the detail that she's had disagreements with Akai that ended up with injuries to both of them. Frankly, that hints at a lot more emotion and getting worked up than anything they've actually shown on page, so. I don't really know how to consider that. But she claims to care about her kids safety, and implied that she didn't want Akai joining the FBI, and yet. Who cares about the trouble Sera could be getting into, I guess. Tsutomu we don't have enough context to know how he treats his kids, so he gets a neutral ranking.
Ginzo still falls under 'not okay for forgetting his daughter's birthday and being a bit of a workaholic', but the way it's presented still isn't actually bad. His wife is now in a similar boat, for not being available because of work and logic stupidity (please look up what actual sleep deprivation can do because there is no sleep banking out of three days being awake). Up in the air how much of their apparent absence is the fault of the author and how bad they actually are, but honestly? They seem pretty okay within Gosho's writing limitations. Might just be because part of Midoriko's explained lack of Kid knowledge was that, because she and Ginzo got into arguments, they both agreed it best to not discuss work with each other. I don't know if that's the best solution to that problem, but at least it implies that they can communicate and identify problems.
And I know why people hate Heizo, the main reason I really can't say he should be burned at a stake is because of the entire context of that case and why the scene needed to happen. So the worst I can say about Heizo is that he manipulated his son and used him as bait to catch a worse criminal than the actual culprit of the murder Heiji was trying to solve. So I'll stick with my opinion of 'not great, but not really on the same level as the actually bad parents'. Heiji wasn't going to leave the case alone, so I can see why he'd go with a 'well then, make yourself useful' plan, even if I don't agree with it.
Parents of DCMK
Because I feel like my views of the parents tend to be different from the norm, and I have the time, I’m finally going to go into my thoughts about each grouping. (Or at least, the main parents we actually know information about.)

Regarding a Common Misconception of Hakuba Saguru
Lately I've been doing some reflecting on Saguru & the various ways I've seen him portrayed, as well as the ways I've portrayed him in the past. And then I was rereading some MK manga, and had some realizations. I've been feeling like rambling about them! So here I go, rambling.
[Disclaimer: I'm not personally taking issue with anyone's interpretation or impression of Saguru - just sharing my own impressions! This is just for fun <3 ]
Misconception: Saguru is constantly accusing Kaito of being KID
It’s a generally accepted fact in a lot of fics I’ve read (and honestly, maybe some fics I’ve written -- I used to hold this belief too!) that Saguru just unendingly insinuates that Kaito is KID--alone, in front of other people, always.
I won’t cite any here, but I’ve seen nods in fanwork to Aoko feeling a little stressed/frustrated about the fact that Saguru thinks Kaito is KID and makes it known. I’ve also seen fanwork where Saguru explicitly calls Kaito KID, presses Kaito for information, or otherwise makes his beliefs clear, even when others are around.
There are only five scenes in the Magic Kaito manga where Saguru makes direct indication toward his knowledge of KID’s identity.
First, of course, we’ve got chapter 17 - the first chapter where Saguru puts together that Kaito is KID.
For a long time, when I’d consumed more fic than MK canon, I recall an image born in my head of Saguru singling Kaito out in class and making the claim that Kaito is KID in front of everybody. I don’t know if I ever read any such allusion in a fic, or if it’s just an assumption I drew based on portrayals I read, but imagine my surprise when he does nothing of the sort.
Now, to be fair, Saguru is A LOT in this chapter. MK is still heavily in gag manga territory, so his behavior is extra extra played up. But if we take away the visuals, the dialogue between Saguru and Kaito can be summed up thusly:
[First scene where Saguru makes direct indications as to KID’s identity]
Kaito: You look so tired. Haven’t gotten enough sleep after chasing KID for three nights In a row, huh?
Saguru: Hmph. Aren’t you tired as well?
And then, a few beats later in the conversation:
Saguru: I’d like to invite you to the Ochima Art Museum tonight, where KID’s declared his next target. Kaito: Eh? Saguru: Then, you’ll understand why I’m so tired. Or, do you have other plans tonight? Kaito: Okay, I accept your invitation. It’ll be great to see your work in action!
And that’s it, that’s the big class confrontation. Aoko is present for it, but she’s more interested in joining in on the fun, and while I do think Aoko pieces together that Kaito is KID, she prefers to live in willful ignorance of it until it becomes impossible for her to ignore. She’s bright enough to pick up what Saguru’s implying, but because he never brings it past implication, there’s no reason for her to look at it too hard. Anyway, I digress. That’s conjecture and headcanon talking. My point is that Saguru never makes any explicit claims, just invites Kaito along to the heist.
Another neat thing about this scene is that--while certainly not motivated by mercy in this case, Saguru does give Kaito an out: “Or, do you have an excuse not to go tonight?” Of course, if Kaito took it, it would be rather damning, but I do think it would have been enough confirmation for Saguru. I don’t think there would have been any arm-twisting to get Kaito to agree.
But Kaito and Saguru are competitive bastards, so here we are.
Let’s move on to the heist!
Once again, the manga certainly plays up the whole ordeal. Saguru is intense and waiting for his moment, and Kaito’s being, well, Kaito.
At the heist, there are a few points where Saguru has opportunities to make allusions to Kaito being KID in a way others would pick up on, or otherwise make his suspicions known, but he doesn’t.
First of all, is this exchange:
Nakamori: Why are you guys here? Aoko: Hakuba-kun invited us! Nakamori: What’s the meaning of this, Hakuba-kun? Saguru: I thought she might like to see if KID is arrested tonight. Nakamori: You’ll fail if you’re too cocky! Saguru: We’re well-prepared. Besides, who knows… KID may already be here.
Saguru does imply KID could be present, but he makes no indication that he means Kaito. His next opportunity to hint at Kaito being KID or otherwise make accusations is when Nakamori asks him to consult as a magician.
Nakamori: Kaito, since you’re here, do you want to use your magic against KID? Kaito: [laughing sheepishly] Saguru: Oh, I want to see that fight, too. If you really can do it.
Needling, yes. Saguru knows what he’s saying and so does Kaito. Accusations, no. This is well within the realm of something Saguru would have said even if he didn’t suspect Kaito, considering their dynamic up until this point.
And then, the most explicit Saguru ever gets in terms of literally calling Kaito out as being KID, beginning when Kaito excuses himself to go to the bathroom right before the heist:
[Second scene where Saguru makes direct indications as to KID’s identity]
Saguru: [handcuffs himself to Kaito] Kaito: Huh? Saguru: I won’t let you do that, Kuroba. Kaito: What do you think you’re doing?! Saguru: I got the report back from the lab. The hair I got from KID indicated that he’s a high school student. After I compared KID’s data with other high school students’ data in the database… Kuroba Kaito came up in the final list. Kaito: That’s a coincidence. Saguru: Really? We’ll see soon enough. Let’s wait until the time KID is stated to come. [Some heist hubbub occurs as officers get into position even though KID hasn’t arrived at the heist time] Aoko: What? KID’s not coming? Saguru: Ha! It looks like I win! You’d better confess who you really are.
And from there, of course, ‘KID’ (Akako in disguise) swoops in and takes care of the heist. That more or less wraps up chapter 17, the first chapter where Saguru understands that Kaito is KID. And I would argue this is the most aggressive Saguru ever is. In fact, rather than persist in trying to accuse/capture/implicate Kaito as KID, he straight up vanishes from the narrative for several chapters.
Saguru doesn’t show up again until the Chat Noir heist, in chapter 25, when he calls from France.
It’s also important to note that at this point, Magic Kaito’s narrative has experienced a slight tonal shift. At the very least, while still often comedic, it reads less like a gag manga. Between the last time we saw Saguru and now, we’ve learned the apparent motivation behind Toichi’s murder, we’ve met Snake (an albeit rather incompetent villain) and Kaito has faced down gunfire and the danger posed by Snake and his men.
The way Saguru is portrayed has also shifted to reflect the shift too. Instead of a hulking antagonist-like character in a Holmes cosplay, he’s dressed primly and presents more as a cheeky but polite character. He’s also more effectively emulating the charm that the story tried to imply he had early on (“Hakuba Saguru, at your service!”, the girls in class fawning over him, the newspaper calling him out as a famous detective making a long-awaited return to Japan).
The interaction is entirely less antagonistic, too. For reference, I’ll paste the exchange (sans Saguru’s massive info dump) below.
[Third scene where Saguru makes direct indications as to KID’s identity]
[At the heist for the golden eye] Kaito: [Hiding in a bathroom stall while putting on a disguise] [His phone starts ringing] Hello…? Saguru: Hi, it’s been a while. Are you still alive? Kaito: [Thinking] This sugary yet obnoxious tone of voice is... Hakuba?! Saguru: You’ve made quite the stir in Paris. They’re all talking about how France’s Chat Noir is going to go up against you in Japan. Kaito: Idiot! It’s not me. It’s Kaitou KID! Saguru: Ha… it doesn’t really matter. I’ll share some information that I gathered over here. [Info dump cut from dialogue] Well! That’s about all I have to say. Do your best. I don’t want to see you lose to anyone until I capture you myself. Kaito: Like I’ve been saying, I’m not KID! Saguru: Oops, it’s almost time for the Paris Fashion Week. See you! Kaito: H-hey…
The only part of this conversation that I could consider to fall into the territory of antagonistic is when Saguru says “I don’t want to see you lose to anyone until I capture you myself.” And more than anything, I think this is less reflective of a real desire to capture Kaito, and more reflective of his competitive nature. Not to mention, within the context of the conversation, it feels much more like teasing than anything.
Saguru’s motivation for making the call is clear: He doesn’t want Kaito to lose, and he wants to help ensure Kaito’s success.
And most interestingly (although I’d like to see the raw manga to confirm this, or otherwise a more literal translation) he never explicitly calls Kaito KID either. Outside of alluding to KID’s actions, Saguru doesn’t explicitly say Kaito is KID or mention KID at all. It’s Kaito who does that.
When Kaito points out that he is not, in fact, KID, Saguru doesn’t argue. He simply brushes off the denial and shares the information he’s collected.
So, to summarize what we’ve covered so far: after Saguru failed to arrest Kaito during chapter 17, he stopped troubling Kaito so thoroughly that the next time he features in the story isn’t until he’s calling from overseas to try to lend Kaito some helpful information. He’s not even playing a part in trying to capture this thief he allegedly wants to catch.
And then, Saguru dips back out of the narrative, although for a shorter period this time. The next arc he appears in is a few chapters later--the Nightmare Heist which he arrives in the middle of. But, there’s not any interaction between him and Kaito, nor any allusions made by Saguru about KID’s identity, so we’ll move on.
The fourth time Saguru makes any indication that Kaito is KID is during the Corbeau arc, when KID is being challenged by a clad-in-black KID lookalike.
Before jumping into that specific scene, though, there’s another interaction I’d like to call attention to--between Saguru and Nakamori. Not because of something Saguru says, but because of what he doesn’t say.
Nakamori: Hahaha! Looks like you let your guard down because you thought I was at home with a cold! Saguru: Our plan succeeded, it seems. Nakamori: But I only told Aoko I had a cold, so how does KID know…? Saguru: Hm...
If Saguru were wanting to make some kind of accusation, even a non-explicit one, he would have made some remark. Instead, he doesn’t say anything at all, which continues to speak to the fact that he isn’t really interested in implicating Kaito.
Anyway, the next time Saguru makes any sort of implication that Kaito is KID he is, once again, trying to help. Last time it was over the phone, so the conversation was private. This time, the conversation is in a classroom, although based on the panels, it seems like Saguru and Kaito are alone at the beginning--or at least, no attention is being paid to them.
[Fourth scene where Saguru makes direct indications as to KID’s identity]
Kaito: [Talking to himself] It must be the case, there’s no other way. There must have been some trick with the case.
Saguru: [Eavesdropping, apparently alone in the room with him] The case didn’t contain any hidden mechanisms. Kaito: Eh? Saguru: No hidden doors or things like that, as are often used in magic tricks. Kaito: W-what on earth are you talking about? Saguru: A new notice from Corbeau arrived this morning. ‘I’ll come and take the real Midnight Crow tonight.’ My name is Hakuba--so I don’t want a ‘white’ person to lose to some ominous black crow. [From here, Akako and then Aoko jump into the conversation.]
Surely a classroom is a risky place to have a conversation about KID, but the nice thing is that Saguru--once again--doesn’t bring up KID at all beyond saying that he doesn’t want the ‘white[-clad] person’ to lose to the black crow. From the outside looking in, all he’s doing is sharing information about the case with Kaito. It may also seem unwarranted from that perspective, but not at all implicating.
Also, another thing I’d like to call attention to is that when Akako joins the conversation (and seemingly blindsides Saguru, as if he wasn’t expecting anyone else to join), Saguru stops talking. He continues to be quiet when Aoko chimes in, and he doesn’t have any relevant dialogue for the rest of the scene.
Once again, Saguru’s clearly motivated to share information in the interest of helping Kaito. He has to share with Kaito’s civilian identity, since he can’t exactly arrange a conversation with KID, and this is likely the easiest way for him to do it. He makes no accusations, and this time he doesn’t even imply he wants KID caught.
So--Saguru is a part of the narrative again, but since rejoining the narrative he seems less interested in actually catching KID and far more interested in helping Kaito. And no accusations or incriminating allusions have been made since chapter 17, before Saguru’s first hiatus from the story.
The final time Saguru nods to Kaito being KID is from the Sun Halo arc. This is probably the interaction that’s closest to what fanon tends to depict when it comes to Saguru making subtle accusations that Kaito is KID. And even then, I tend to take this arc with a grain of salt if only because it felt less like Gosho was trying to add to the story and more like he was just trying to make a Magic Kaito addition that hit various fan expectations while still being wildly disappointing, lmao.
[Fifth scene where Saguru makes direct indications as to KID’s identity]
Saguru: [approaching and commenting on Kaito’s motorcycle] I see, a Suzuki GSX 250R. Akako: Ah, Hakuba-kun… Saguru: You’ve shown me something interesting. Perhaps this might help the police tonight. And could it be that you’ve forgotten… that the only motorised bikes we’re allowed to ride to school are scooters? Kaito: Eh?! For real?!
Once again, Saguru doesn’t explicitly mention KID at all--and segues from his mention of the police to pointing out that Kaito is breaking the rules right now, actually, which helps blend this teasing comment into the conversation.
Yes, later in the chapter Saguru does show up with a team of motorcycle experts. But that also means there’s more disguise opportunities for KID and more factors to account for, thus complicating things for, well, everyone--not just KID.
Also, I tend to dismiss that as Gosho throwing in some comedy, and as less to do with Saguru’s character. Call it cherrypicking if you like :P
To recount--there are five times where Saguru implies Kaito is KID.
The first two are in chapter 17, when Saguru first puts it together, and it is during this chapter that he gets the most explicit about calling Kaito out as KID, as well as the most aggressively he behaves about it. And he backs off so hard after that doesn’t work, that we don’t see him for several chapters.
The next two times he implies Kaito is KID are both in order to help him. No aggression or accusations, just the sharing of information. Even when teasing or suggesting he’s interested in catching KID, he’s good-natured about it, and when he realizes there are potentially people witnessing the conversation, he stops participating.
The final time he implies Kaito is KID is a tiny comment about finding something Kaito has shown him ‘interesting’ and ‘helpful for the police’ before smoothing into gently teasing Kaito for bringing an illegal vehicle to school.
In conclusion, Saguru may start off apparently aggressive in part thanks to early Magic Kaito’s overall tone, but rather than persevering in trying to catch Kaito after cornering him in chapter 17, he actually seems to back off. Once he’s playing a part in the narrative again, when he interacts with Kaito it’s almost exclusively to help him. Yes, he is on the task force and participating at heists, but where it matters, he’s less interested in catching the thief and far more interested in those the thief is opposing (excluding the police force).

The true successor of the Kudo family miracle. ❤️
This is still part of my Detective Conan x Encanto fusion crossover series of mine. In this fusion, the Kudo family are the Madrigals of Detective Conan's version, and Shinichi was considered the next one to be the patriarch of the family, since he's the only child.
As much as the Kuroba's also included in the family of true magic, with Kaito as the next one if something happens to Shinichi, they had preferred to stay away from direct involvement and do their love for stage magic, leaving young Shinichi to handle the pressure. ❤️
Unfortunately, due to...certain circumstances, and the Kurobas still doesn't want to directly involve in family matters regarding to the candle and the miracle (it seems like Toichi was having issues with the miracle affecting the family), Conan Edogawa was put as a placeholder, since he considered to be a 'distant relative' of Shinichi... And the Kudo Mansion's favorite (yes, it's sentient and alive like the Casita).
The candle has a different design from the original Encanto version, with cherry blossoms/sakura symbolizing justice... and since sakura only bloom for a short while, so in Japanese poetry and art, this Japanese flower can also represent transience and the fleeting nature of existence.
