Omg ;;; I need to know more about Malpractice and silly lill "kid" user. Like what does Malpractice do once he takes them.
Or was it a slow process since Malpractice probably wanted to get an idea of what he's dealing with and prepare a room!
Omg, plz yap about him. I will love to hear everything about him ;;

intro post | masterlist
!!! i was literally so happy when I got this ask,,, ohmygah,, i would be more than happy to infodump about the physical incarnation of “oopsie” “WHAT DO YOU MEAN ‘OOPSIE’? YOU’RE CURRENTLY DOING OPEN-HEART SURGERY?”…
this also got a little longer than i anticipated </3 i would add a 'read more', but it breaks the formatting and idk how to fix it :[ i just love him so much. i love my OCs so. i have to spill all his lore like it's spaghetti in my pocket at the slightest prompting.
Malpractice is a very methodical person in general. So I don’t think he’d exactly rush in on trapping reader, but that’s not to say he wouldn’t want to be quick with it.
Reader probably has some sort of ‘give-and-take’ power, the kind that’d be demonized to a certain extent. Probably a medical/healing related one as well, which would hit Malpractice right in his withered, literally rotting, heart.
The mentor would be a flashy sort of superhero, some sort of power relating to light/fire probably. You were assigned to each other not because the agency thought you’d work well together,
But because they were certain your mentor could keep you in check. They treated you like a ticking time-bomb, and the only reason they took you into their custody was to prevent you becoming an antagonistic force if you’d ‘fallen into the wrong hands’.
They treated you like an object, is what Malpractice thought when he uncovered it all. Really, it hadn’t taken very much digging at all to find your medical, training, and academic records.
…Then again, he supposes that’s no fault of the agency. Of course there was an easy back door in for him, he made the system. It was funny, how they never bothered to change it much-- even though it’s been nearly a century.
You’d think they would’ve, since the agency was very well aware of the little hiccup that caused Malpractice to become the way he was. Granted, he’d never been a very altruistic or good person in the first place; but he never had the means to enact over half of what he does now until that ‘hiccup’.
While the general public— and even a large majority of of the agency’s staff— didn’t know of the connection, the higher ups most certainly did.
Well, no skin off his teeth if they didn’t patch up the holes he used to get into their documents. Just made it all the more easy for him, hm?
But regardless, after reading the documents on you-- He decided to try and get you away from the agency’s grasp as soon as he could.
At first, he simply watched you from a distance. Oh, how he hated it, watching you being treated like you were,
But he never made a move to intervene, to let himself known. Malpractice wasn’t really known for being antsy-- he was a very patient person, all things considered.
He’d waited years, hell, even decades, for plans to come into full effect.
This time around, with you involved, he could hardly even wait the three months he had before you fell into his awaiting arms.
It wasn’t a fun time for him, having to keep tabs on you from afar; make sure you weren’t getting roughed up too terribly.
Then, he started helping you when your mentor would just up and leave you; which he had come to know, was a very common occurrence.
Far more common than it should be. Even once would be far too much, considering how you’re frontal lobe wasn’t even fully developed yet.
Usually, he didn’t have much of an opinion on the particular people running the agency at the time. He’s seen various board members and CEOs come and go,
But he’d couldn’t help but think of this bunch as complete and utter idiots. cruel, biased idiots and not much more.
At first, you’d hardly notice his ‘help’, when enemies would just keel over unconscious— or pitch forward and upchuck randomly, you thought it was strange how it was happening more and more often—
You never made the connection though. Obviously, you wouldn’t have, because no one was aware Malpractice had returned in the first place. He decided to lay low for once, make sure to leave his grand reappearance until after you’re safe and sound.
Eventually, his ‘helping hand’ got too obvious to ignore. Especially at one instance, where your mentor left you with an actual danger. Not some group of burglars or a smalltime, wannabe villain.
No. You were left with an established villain. One that even your mentor would have a little trouble subduing. In a rather uncharacteristic spur-of-the-moment decision, he sent in one of his helpers.
Your opponents suddenly getting sick, anytime they came even remotely close to landing a hit? Strange, concerning even; but ultimately, couldn’t draw a strong enough connection to anything (or anyone) in particular.
However, when a re-animated corpse shambles on the scene and beats the shit out of the villain you were fighting,
Well, it was undeniable. The connection to Malpractice— the agency kept it a secret, something they did quite often. They’d realize he was around again, but wouldn’t let the public know until Malpractice made himself known.
It was a self-preservation tactic, really. He could become quite agitated if his plan for a grand entry was smothered by the agency’s meddling.
He’s a very theatrical person, like his whole existence can be defined by the phrase “comic book villains are just theater kids that somehow got the means to enact their shenanigans on a large scale.”.
After that, he didn’t really see a point in not meeting you face to face. Obviously, he couldn’t just waltz up to you! He understands that looks absolutely terrifying, even ignoring the reputation he’s built for himself.
He’ll just scare you off!
So obviously, the next course of action was to find a fresh corpse, embalm it to try and get the most out of it time-wise; and puppet it around in order to meet you.
Very normal behavior in his mind. But the again, he hasn’t necessarily been all there for almost a century now-- not that he’d admit that part.
Out loud or otherwise.
When that body ‘expired’, damage too noticeable for any sane person to assume they were a living, breathing person; he just got another one.
He did this a couple times, learning things about you from the source-- hopes, dreams, hobbies, interests, so on and so forth. He used his findings to create a room in one of his favorite safehouses.
Honestly, he's quite sure that the agency knows the location of it; but use that knowledge to purposefully avoid it. It's funny to him, how much fear he strikes in them, because the heads know better than anyone just how difficult he was to deal with.
They'd leave him alone, even when he took you. Wouldn't come looking for you, even if they put two-and-two together and figured out where you'd gone. But he'd be foolish to think that the only reason behind that would be the fear they feel for him.
No, they view you as expendable. All the more reason to take you in, obviously! Again, children shouldn't anywhere near this sort of work. Even if you aren't literally a child, you'd be hard pressed to get that through Malpractice's thick skull.

Some people may think it's "boring" or a copout that the only hobby given in '03 Leo's bio is reading but it doesn't have to be. Leo being a bookworm is a fun thought in my opinion -- admittedly a biased one because I grew up as a bookworm myself. The phrase "Readers Are Leaders" was one I lived by, and how perfectly applicable is that to Leo? Imagine!
When they're tots, he helps the others learn how to read! Getting gently scolded by Master Splinter for staying up late reading under the covers. Setting up a cozy little reading corner in his bedroom stacked with battered books he's read front to back and back to front.
The excitement when Master Splinter scavenges dumped books for him to read; doing his best to clean it up, feeling crushed every time he finds pages stained beyond repair, torn or missing but he'll try to fill in the gaps of the plot with the information he has (training his foresight and attention to detail in the process, which will help a lot in the future.) Rereading the salvage half a dozen times within the week. Trying so, sooo hard not to spoil parts of it to his brothers because he's just so eager to see how they react to the twist!
He and Don bond as book buddies since they read above their age level. Mikey gets to flex his art skills making personalized bookmarks for Leo because one of his biggest pet peeves is losing whatever page he was on. Raph pretends he's too old now for Splinter's bedtime stories but hey, he wouldn't complain if Leo decided to relay it to him secondhand, since Leo's got it memorized already.
The day he learned about libraries, free for humans to have their pick of all the books they could want, it really started to sink in for him how different it was for their family, how much they were missing out on topside. That hurt.
Whenever his brothers get their turn with a book first, they can feel him hovering around, itching to get his hands on it -- which probably distracts them from reading as quickly as they could so eventually they're just like "Okay, fine, take it already." Leo devours it until he hits the part where his brothers left off and then reads the rest to them so they can experience the ending together!
He probably has a great reading voice. There may be a few books the others won't read on their own because it's not the same when it's not Leo doing the voices. Mikey jokes that he should record some audiobooks and maybe it's not a bad idea! Maybe he does. (Maybe one of his brothers listens to them after he's been sent away to Japan because they miss him and want to hear his voice as it used to be, free of the pain and anger that's been so common these days.)
Escaping into familiar, easy reading when he's stressed. Leaning on the stories with happy endings when he needs a boost of morale and hope. Curling up in private with a book that he knows will make him cry when he needs an emotional release. Reading aloud at his brothers' bedside whenever they're seriously injured, either to distract them from the pain or hoping his voice will lure them back to consciousness, as their voices did for him.
Bookworm Leo isn't boring to me <3

bro i have a questionwhy did the fandom choose Giyuu to feminize? I mean in my opinion Giyuu is the most cisgender male character I've seen in kny
Tumblr media
and for some reason I've also noticed that the fandom reuses the features of the male characters that have more "feminine" traits and gives them more to Giyuu, they are ironically the ones that Giyuu is shipped the most withso here goes what I've noticed
Tengen
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tengen loves to be flashy, he paints his nails, wears makeup and wears jewelry, things that are commonly associated with femininity
Sanemi
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I won't talk much about this topic since @thatdawgx has a post talking about this (please go read it, it has good points) but something I will mention and that is also mentioned in the post is that Sanemi has a motherly smile, and you know (which another thing that seems strange to me is that they want to put Giyuu as a motherly figure, something that Giyuu never be)
Sabito
Tumblr media
ok you guys might call me crazy for this but I'll give you my reasons (and I personally think this is the most extreme case along with Sanemi's, where they take away someone's femininity and give it to Giyuu) most of the fandom sees sabito as someone super manly and with toxic masculinity but I have my proof to believe that Sabito has more femininity than Giyuu in my opinion!
Sabito has a lot in common with female characters
Sabito and Nezuko have the same ideologies and ways of thinking
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sabito and Mitsuri have an almost identical color palette
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sabito and Koyuki are technically counterparts (or they have a similar role in the story but in a different way, I don't know how to explain it)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also, going back to the color palette, in the color pages of the manga Sabito's hakamas are pink and his hair is not orange but pink! (a color normally associated with femininity) In general Sabito is more associated with bright, soft colors and normally pink tones although in the anime or ufotable Sabito is usually portrayed as orange, his real color is pink
(If you want, don't take this so seriously, but I still wanted to do it)

I’m curious to see the response Ryan gives for his personal thoughts on what’s going on between Buck and Eddie.
But at the same time I’m not excited for the melt down it’ll probably cause since he still can’t give anything away so people are gonna end up dooming 💀😂
Tumblr media
Listen, at this point I've given up on asking people to use their common sense. We've been saying this over and over again, but for some reason there are always people that will see the worst in these interviews and who spiral and doompost afterwards.
What do they possibly expect Ryan to say? He can't just come out and say:
"Hey everyone! Guess what?! Eddie is gay!!! And he desperately wants to bone Buck!!!! WHAT ABOUT THAT BUCK AND EDDIE THING HUH?!!!! YOLO!!! LOL!!!"
So yes, he'll skirt around the topic and he'll say some deep and meaningful things about the Buddie friendship and how important it is for Eddie. I expect him to tease a little and give some vague answers, but that's really the only thing he can say. 🤷‍♀️
And like clockwork, people over on Twitter will start yelling that he is baiting them. Pffff, seriously-- if it wasn't for some good sources, I would have deleted Twitter ages ago.
The influx of some newer fans (both BT and Buddie) when Buck came out as bi has made the 911 fandom a worse place to be in my opinion. Some of these people are ruthless. The way they talk to professional journalists is appalling and downright rude. I always have so much second-hand embarrassment when I read some of their comments.
((I'd like to make a note here that I'm not talking about ALL new people in fandom, just some of them and most are over on Twitter. I've met a lot of lovely new people here on Tumblr who know how to behave normally and who are genuinly excited to join this fandom. Welcome to all of you!!! Seriously!!! It's nice to have some new voices and fresh input.))
As the second anon said, some of them were almost threatening Jeff Conway, telling him that the fandom would be upset with him if the interview didn't give them what they wanted. I mean... WTF?! This guy interviewed an actor of a TV-show. He is only going to write about what Ryan said. This isn't life and death here! It's just a silly little TV-show interview!
This isn't even about fandom etiquette anymore. It goes beyond that! This is about human decency. Just because you are online and anonymous, doesn't mean that you get to act like a total *sshole towards an entertainment journalist or towards actors and other fans for that matter. I have seen some vile Ryan hatred on Buddie-Twitter. Safe to say I blocked all of them.
I truly don't get it. How were these people raised? Didn't their parents or guardians ever talk to them about kindness and decency? Did some of them grow up with social media without any kind of supervision and somehow it desensitized them to normal human behaviour and social cues? What went wrong?!
I don't know you guys. Maybe I sound old to some of you.🤷‍♀️ But I've been in fandom spaces for a very long time now, so I know what I'm talking about.
Whenever I speak up about something like this, I get messages in my inbox calling me a 'boomer'. I didn't know that asking for simple human decency and politeness made someone a 'boomer', but if that is the case, I'll gladly take that title. Because some of these fans' behaviour on Twitter is seriously getting out of hand.
So really, the message here is: Stay away from stan-Twitter if you can, but if you like it there (no judgement 😋 You do you!) do make sure to block wisely, even within the Buddie fandom if necessary. Don't share, reply or make screenshots, because none of us should condone or share these people's shitty behaviour.

There's a famous saying: "2 Jews, 3 opinions". And you just asked several questions to the entirety of Jewish Tumblr, so no doubt you'll get many different perspectives on this. I'm not Orthodox or Frum myself, but I can speak from my perspective as someone Jewish who knows many folks in that community, but also has some distance. More about me and my frame of reference at the end. 🙂
The first thing I'm curious about is how all of your questions ask about "Orthodox" Judaism rather than mainstream Judaism. There's a misconception in the wider community that old school, black hat, Orthodox Jews are the "real" Jews and everyone else is "Jewish lite". That is absolutely not the case. The vast majority of American Jews (around 90%) are non-Orthodox, mostly unaffiliated (~40%) and Reform (~30%). Now, don't get me wrong, the 10% of American Jews who are Orthodox are valid and deserve to get representation and to participate in these conversations, but I want people from outside the community to understand just how diverse the Jewish community is. Jews in other countries like Israel, Britain, and Canada have a higher percentage of Orthodoxy, but even there, they are a minority compared to unaffiliated and more liberal branches.
1. Who is a Jew? Before Judaism was considered a religion, it was considered a family. And in my opinion, that is still the best way of understanding it. Every family has their quirky traditions, their values and beliefs, and their understanding of relatedness to each other. There also are many ways you can join a family. You can be born into it, adopted into it, marry into it, or otherwise find yourself "choosing" and "chosen" in that family. The only thing you can't do is start identifying yourself as a member of a family, if the rest of the family doesn't see you that way.
Whether you'll be seen as part of the family, depends on the branch of Judaism. Orthodox Judaism recognizes you as Jewish if your mother was a Jew, or if you had a valid conversion. It doesn't matter if you observe Shabbat every week or never observe it. Doesn't matter if you're a "good" Jew, a "bad" Jew, or anything in between: a Jew is a Jew is a Jew.
Now, like everything in Judaism, this gets complicated when you zoom in on the details. What does it mean for someone's mother to be Jewish? Well, they have to have a Jewish mother or a valid Jewish conversion. How far back do you go? Oftentimes, documents from your maternal grandmother will suffice, but even that can be complicated depending on where your family is from and what kinds of records they kept there. There are cases of entire communities' Jewish status being questioned based on their origin and type of practice (eg the Ethiopian Beta Israel or immigrants from the Former Soviet Union).
And that's not even most common can of worms, which is that Orthodox communities do not consider non-Orthodox conversions to be valid. So if you or one of your maternal ancestors converted with a liberal Rabbi, an Orthodox community would likely require a conversion ceremony "just in case" at the least, or a full year or longer of Orthodox study, depending on your situation. In the USA and Canada, Reform, Conservative, and Reconstructionist communities accept each other's conversions, and will even sit together on a Beit Din ("court" of 3 Rabbis needed to perform a conversion) in smaller communities. Even between countries, "who is a Jew" is a complicated question. Almost every Reform Jewish community in the USA considers a child Jewish if either the mother or father is Jewish, but almost no Reform Jewish community in Canada does. This scrutiny can also be exacerbated by racism and xenophobia — with my dark, curly hair, light olive skin, and convex Semitic nose, I've never been asked to confirm my Jewish parentage; while blonds and Jews of color face more scrutiny.
Despite all this, Jews recognize each other all the time, irrespective of branch. We don't proselytize to non-Jews, but several branches of Judaism do Kiruv (in-reach) to encourage unaffiliated Jews to "return" to their Jewish roots and get involved in their community. Of course, what exactly that means will vary by community.
2. Is Gay Okay? I'll answer this one in two parts, first for Orthodox Judaism, second for liberal, non-Orthodox Judaism.
Orthodox: Remember "2 Jews, 3 opinions?" The Orthodox umbrella contains no less than six "flavors", many of which can be subdivided into smaller sects or dynasties. Even two Rabbis in the same community may disagree on the nuances of particular issues. In my opinion, this is a feature, not a bug. After all, humans are imperfect. If even Moses himself got it wrong at times, everyone since then must be taken with a grain of salt of various sizes.
The range of Orthodox opinions runs the gamut from the Orthodox Union's 2006 position that "To argue that same-sex marriage is consistent with the traditions of Judaism is intellectually dishonest at best and blasphemous at worst", to thrice ordained Orthodox Rabbi Mike Moskowitz saying "Being gay itself is not a toeiva [violation]. Forcing people to live a life of deception is." The average Orthodox person's opinion is somewhere in the middle of these extremes, and varies depending on which "flavor" of Orthodox they prescribe to, as well as if they have any LGBTQ+ friends or family.
Liberal: The Jewish mainstream is very accepting of LGBTQ+ people, with Reform, Conservative, Reconstructionist, and Renewal communities all officiating LGBTQ+ weddings and welcoming LGBTQ+ Jews to become Rabbis. The liberal movements have even supported new language and rituals that "queer" traditional Jewish practices and mark queer lifecycle events such as gender transition.
3. What about Abortion? All branches of Judaism are very clear that the life of the pregnant individual always takes precedence. Orthodox Judaism opposes any legislation that would unilaterally ban abortion at any stage of pregnancy, but does identify as "pro-life" and sees abortion as a "last resort" for physical or mental health reasons only. Reform Judaism is strongly pro-choice, seeing reproductive decisions as incredibly personal and situational, that families and doctors should make without any outside interference.
This is all my interpretation from my own frame of reference. I am non-denominational: I take a little bit from all the movements but don't limit myself to only one of them. Also, my mother is a Reform Rabbi in Canada, and my wife is a Reform Rabbi in the USA, and I've lived my entire life around Rabbis and Jewish educators and leaders of every denomination. So when I decide how to interpret the traditions in my own life, I do it from a very informed and intentional place.
If you want to learn more, all of the links above are a good place to start. I especially recommend the Jewish Virtual Library and My Jewish Learning as good starting points.
As the great Rabbi Hillel said: "The rest is commentary, now go and study it!"
So, I have a few questions to everyone and I mean this in good faith:1.Does Orthodox Judaism generally accept Reform and Conservative Jews or is there a "no-true scotsman" issue like in Christianity with the Unity branch vs Conservative Christianity, which is most Christian Branches. 2. What are the views on Homosexuality? I generally heard mainly Orthodox Jews don't support it, but some Orthodox Jews do. 3. Does the issue with Abortion that Christianity has also apply to Orthodox Jews? I know the fetus personhood™️ only seems to apply to Christians.
P.S I am ExChristian trying to get an understanding of Judaism so I can keep this whole Judaism=Christianity without Jesus behind me. I genuinely don't want to end up like those antisemetic Atheists who hate both.
Please state your frame of reference clearly when answering

So so indebted to u for posting those lovely illustrations from Cyrano <333 & even more so for yr tags!! I'm completely in love w yr analysis, please feel free to ramble as long as u wish! Browsing through yr Cyrano de Bergerac tag has given me glimpses of so many adaptations & translations I'd never heard of before! I'll be watching the Solès version next, which I have only discovered today through u ^_^ As for translations, have u read many/all of them? I've only encountered the Renauld & Burgess translations in the wild, & I was curious to hear yr translation thoughts that they might guide my decision on which one I buy first (not necessarily Renauld or Burgess ofc). Have a splendid day & sorry for the likespam! 💙
Sorry for the delay. Don't mind the likespam, I'm glad you enjoyed my tags about Cyrano, and that they could contribute a bit to a further appreciation of the play. I loved it a lot, I got obsessed with it for months. It's always nice to know other people deeply love too that which is loved haha I hope you enjoy the Solès version, it may well be my favourite one!
About translations, I'm touched you're asking me, but I don't really know whether mine is the best opinion to ask. I have read... four or five English translations iirc, the ones I could find online, and I do (and especially did, back when I was reading them) have a lot of opinions about them. However, nor English nor French are my first languages (they are third and fourth respectively, so not even close). I just read and compare translations because that's one of my favourite things to do.
The fact is that no translation is perfect, of course. I barely remember Renauld's, but I think it was quite literal; that's good for understanding the basics of the text, concepts and characters, but form is subject, and there's always something that escapes too literal translations. Thomas and Guillemard's if I recall correctly is similar to Hooker's in cadence. It had some beautiful fragments, some I preferred over Hooker's, but overall I think to recall I liked Hooker's more. If memory serves, Hooker's was the most traditionally poetic and beautiful in my opinion. Burgess' is a whole different thing, with its perks and drawbacks.
Something noticeable in the other translations is that they are too... "epic". They do well the poetic, sorrowful, grief stricken, crushed by regrets aspects of Cyrano and the play in general, but they fall quite short in the funny and even pathetic aspects, and that too is key in Cyrano, both character and play. Given the characteristics of both languages, following the cadence of the French too literally, with those long verses, makes an English version sound far too solemn at times when the French text isn't. Thus Burgess changes the very cadence of the text, adapting it more to the English language. This translation is the one that best sets the different moods in the play, and as I said before form is subject, and that too is key: after all, the poetic aspect of Cyrano is as much true as his angry facet and his goofy one. If Cyrano isn't funny he isn't Cyrano, just as he wouldn't be Cyrano without his devotion to Roxane or his insecurities; Cyrano is who he is precisely because he has all these facets, because one side covers the other, because one trait is born from another, because one facet is used as weapon to protect the others, like a game of mirrors and smoke. We see them at different points through the play, often converging. Burgess' enhances that. He plays with the language itself in form and musicality, with words and absences, with truths masking other truths, with things stated but untold, much like Cyrano does. And the stage directions, poetic and with literary value in their own right in a way that reminded me of Valle InclĂĄn and Oscar Wilde, interact with the text at times in an almost metatextual dimension that enhances that bond Cyrano has with words, giving them a sort of liminal air and strengthening that constant in the play: that words both conceal and unveil Cyrano, that in words he hides and words give him away.
But not all is good, at all. Unlike Hooker, Burgess reads to me as not entirely understanding every facet of the characters, and as if he didn't even like the play all that much, as if he had a bit of a disdainful attitude towards it, and found it too mushy. Which I can understand, but then why do you translate it? In my opinion the Burgess' translation does well bending English to transmit the different moods the French text does, and does pretty well understanding the more solemn, cool, funny, angry, poetic aspects of Cyrano, but less so his devotion, vulnerability, insecurities and his pathetism. It doesn't seem to get Roxane at all, how similar she is to Cyrano, nor why she has so many admirers. It does a very poor job at understanding Christian and his value, and writes him off as stupid imo. While I enjoyed the language aspect of the Burgess translation, I remember being quite angry at certain points reading it because of what it did to the characters and some changes he introduces. I think he did something very questionable with Le Bret and Castel-Jaloux, and I remember being incensed because of Roxane at times (for instance, she doesn't go to Arras in his version, which is a key scene to show just how much fire Roxane has, and that establishes several parallels with Cyrano, in attitude and words, but even in act since she does a bit what Cyrano later does with the nuns in the last act), and being very angry at several choices about Christian too. While not explicitly stated, I think the McAvoy production and the musical both follow this translation, because they too introduce these changes, and they make Christian as a character, and to an extent the entire play, not make sense.
For instance, once such change is that Christian is afraid that Roxane will be cultured (McAvoy's version has that infamous "shit"/"fuck" that I detest), when in the original French it's literally the opposite. He is not afraid she will be cultured, he is afraid she won't, because he does love and appreciate and admires those aspects of her, as he appreciates and admires them in Cyrano. That's key! Just as Cyrano longs to have what Christian has, Christian wants the same! That words escape him doesn't mean he doesn't understand or appreciate them. The dynamics make no sense without this aspect, and Burgess (and the productions that directly or indirectly follow him) constantly erases this core trait of Christian.
Another key moment of Christian Burgess butchers is the scene in Arras in which Christian discovers the truth. Burgess writes their discussion masterfully in form, it's both funny and poignant, but it falls short in concept: when Cyrano tells him the whole discussion about who does Roxane love and what will happen, what they'll do, is academic because they're both going to die, Christian states that dying is his role now. This destroys entirely the thing with Christian wanting Roxane to have the right to know, and the freedom to choose, or to refuse them both. As much as Cyrano proclaims his love for truth and not mincing words even in the face of authority, Cyrano is constantly drunk on lies and mirages, masks and metaphors. It's Christian who wants it all to end, the one who wants real things, the one who wants to risk his own happiness for the chance of his friend's, as well as for the woman he loves to stop living in a lie. That is a very interesting aspect of Christian, and another aspect in which he is written as both paralleling and contrasting Cyrano. It's interesting from a moral perspective and how that works with the characters, but it's also interesting from a conceptual point of view, both in text and metatextually: what they hold most dear, what they most want, what most fulfills them, what they most fear, their different approaches to life, but also metatextually another instance of that tears/blood motif and its ramifications constant through the whole text. Erasing that climatic decision and making him just simply suicidal erases those aspects of Christian and his place in the Christian/Cyrano/Roxane dynamic, all for plain superficial angst, that perhaps hits more in the moment, but holds less meaning.
Being more literal, and more solemn, Hooker's translation (or any of the others, but Hooker's seems to love the characters and understand them) doesn't make these conceptual mistakes. Now, would I not recommend reading Burgess' translation? I can't also say that. I had a lot of fun reading it, despite the occasional anger and indignation haha Would I recommend buying it? I recommend you give an eye to it first, if you're tempted and can initially only buy one.
You can read Burgess' translation entirely in archive.com. You can also find online the complete translations of Renauld, Hooker and Thomas and Guillemard. I also found a fifth one, iirc, but I can't recall it right now (I could give a look). You could read them before choosing, or read your favourite scenes and fragments in the different translations, and choose the one in which you like them better. That's often what I do.
Edit: I've checked to make sure and Roxane does appear in Arras in the translation. It's in the introduction in which it is stated that she doesn't appear in the production for which the translation was made. The conceptualisation of Roxane I criticise and that in my opinion is constant through the text does stay, though.
#I have a lot of opinions about translations in general tbh but this is not a semi clear case like in Crime and Punishment#in which there's one detail that a translation must do for me to recommend it (it used to be the one but now in English several do it)#I wouldn't recommend Burgess as a first approach to the play‚ but having already read the play and knowing the text and characters#and how Burgess may modify it‚ then I wouldn't not recommend it because it is the best in form in many aspects#And while he fails in direct concept‚so to speak‚ form is particularly important in this play and in conveying concept and characterisatio#So idk personal taste is it I guess? Again I am not an English or French native#I vehemently recommend reading the play in French if you can and haven't done so already#Even best if you want a translation to read the translation alongside the French text#to see how the translation bends the play in form and subject#Anyway... Sorry for the long delay and the too long reply. I always end up talking too much#Oh by the way I think I saw you talk about the blood/tears motif in the act IV in some tags? It's not just act IV#The tears/soul motif is repeated through the entire text linked to Cyrano and is opposed to the body of Christian#That's why the culmination in the last act and the tears in the fourth hit so much#Like the constant of Cyrano being linked to the moon and the darkness while Roxane is the sun and the light#And also I would argue the 'pearled perfection of her smile' is not an unidentifiable trait or intangible#It's poetic and metaphoric but it's a description of her teeth. Small‚ straight‚ white. Perfect teeth. That wasn't so common back then#It's quite common in classic literature to find poetic references of good teeth spoken of in these terms#Anyway...#I hope you'll find some use in this that would make the insufferable wall of text worth some of the time at least#After all time spent is a little death. I would have hated to kill a fragment of you for nothing haha#Cyrano de Bergerac#Did I tag asks? I usually delete them after a while so I think I didn't? I never recall#I talk too much#That will suffice#Hmmm it's useless in any case. I think I've talked for over twenty tags before tagging that#A wall of text and somehow I ramble in the tags nonetheless ugh#I will reread this in a bit to see if it's coherent enough. The little screen of the phone always makes me lose track of things when I writ

i think computer literacy is a critical set of skills and that being able to have and use a personal computer has a lot of obvious benefits. more than just being able to navigate a digital environment, computers structure information in an intuitive way--one learns abstract, hierarchical thinking through the process of learning to use the computer. additionally, basic troubleshooting can go a long way in teaching problem-solving strategies.
also, the shift toward mobile devices is one that heavily restricts user control, disempowering users from having the agency to change their digital environment and take calculated risks. especially with the increase in cloud-based file hosting, users are often unwittingly putting their lives in the hands of demonstrably untrustworthy companies. there are many reasons to challenge the dominance of mobile devices.
but i feel pretty annoyed when i see posts scandalized about how Young People These Days only know how to use their phones and can't navigate a desktop to save their lives. i think we adults who grew up around personal computers can be so caught up in how critical they are to our daily lives that we fail to respect the subjective experience of those growing up in a mobile world.
from an experience design and user research perspective, you need to understand the attitude and experience of the people you're complaining about if you want to offer coherent solutions. there are a lot of genuine issues with the current paradigm, but nostalgia can cloud the benefits and draws of the mobile shift.
if we treat pc use as an unqualified good, and mobile use as an unqualified bad, we'll ignore opportunities for cross-generational learning. we'll also feel discouraged by the sentiment that society continues its slow decline toward hyper-late-capitalist technocracy.
but even if a young person's only experience is with mobile devices, we can still teach them how to navigate file structures; we can still introduce troubleshooting and self-directed learning; we can still teach good typing habits (if they have a full-size keyboard). and if we genuinely want young people to have the same computer literacy we do, we need to listen to them about their concerns, frustrations, and questions about PCs. if we want them to use computers, we need to be ready to do a little convincing.
we also need to respect that some people will genuinely prefer mobile devices, because that's what they grew up using. even if mobile interfaces have very distinct priorities from computers, they aren't always worse. being able to identify the logic behind design decisions, even ones you ultimately dislike, is an important analytical skill that primes you to thrive in a changing world.
in short, i know it can be really jarring--and kind of scary!--when skills and ideas that are critical to our generation are being lost as new forces take their place. but if we genuinely think these skills are worth passing on to the next generation, we need to accept that we're in a different world now and that we need to adjust strategies accordingly. a little bit of patience and openmindedness can go a long way in connecting across tech barriers.

Tumblr media Tumblr media
my personal Media Genres tier ranking and also Neopets Species tiers. put together in the same post just due to being adjacently related because they're on the same website lol
links to the specific tier makers: Media Genres --- Neopets
#(might have to right click open image in new tab to zoom and see some of them. tumblr always makes screenshots tiny)#Also I think this is why I have trouble finding things to watch/just don't watch media very often since I'm so so so hyper specific and#particular that I just end up disliking or neutrally not caring about like.. SO MANY things ghfg#Even being aware of my particular-ness I was still surprised to see how many were in the 'dislike' and 'not care' categories lol#Also it is so so so hard being an Action and Romance genre hater YET being a Fantasy and Historical genre lover ghhjb#EVERY fantasy story is also an action romance.. every historical story is a romance.. ouch oof taking psychic damage always#KIND of like how I LOOOOVE point and click mystery puzzle games but I also generally dislike the horror genre#but many point and click puzzle games I used to see would have horror elements or be 'scary' in some way#and it's like HHRgghh.. I just want to navigate a creepy old dilapidated mansion collecting secret codes from books but NOT in a scary way!#just like I want fantasy & historical content but NOT in an action romance way!!#Also.. NEOPETS.. I think my two favorites are both one of the most common choices and also one of the least lol#like EVERYONE loves aishas pretty much. I think they even won a favorite neopets poll on tumblr. But then nobody talks about vandagyres#or even cares about them (seemingly) and they have like so few clothes or good options because they're just irrelevant apparently#also I know it seems very uncharacteristic for the neopet that's basically A Cat to not be in my favorites but I just gjhjhbj#the eyebrows of the wocky bother me. it doesn't match everything else. Even in different paintrbsuh colors it will be#nice and cohesive and pastel or something and then two big dark lines. I aesthetically love thick dark eyebrows on people it just looks wei#rd on a cartoon cat. ANYWAY.. fun to think about#I love ranking things always#also curious to know if anyone has similar opinions... my fellow vandagyre lovers.. and action movie haters.. cutthroat kitchen fans.. :0c#AND as someone tired of romance in general & ESPECIALLY cardboard cutout cishet romances. yes I would of course like to see more lgbtq+#stories in media etc. The genre is just not placed higher because so much seems to be Modern Young Adult Romance which of course I hate#those themes lol.. We need some drama comedies with a cast of gay 300yr old elves in victorian costume. please.. ghjgj.. (and like ACTUAL#300 yr olds. NOT 'is immortal bt still acts like an irrational 15yr old bc plot'. what abt jaded eccentric elder romance? hmM? lol) ANYWAY#always manifesting a 'high fantasy historical mystery comedy drama satire psychological character study (with vampires)' into existence lol#if I could make a tv show set in my world... the sheer power I would have.. and nobody would watch it because it would have NO action or#romance (at least none that was serious/was not framed as lame/goofy/comedic) & would have intricate complicated worldbuilding and be very#VERY broadly unmarketable.. but I would finally have a show that meets my tastes lol

last night i had a mix of tinnitus and sleep deprivation induced auditory hallucinations which was basically just like. literal microphone feedback. and i think it was triggered by me testing my microphone yesterday bc the feedback was awful but yeah i was lying awake and all i could hear was extremely loud microphone feedback in my brain i'm so glad it's over 😭
#worst hallucination i've ever had#like usually if i'm bad enough to get hallucinations it's just like murmuring/whispering but i can tell it's not real#worst ones i've had before is like screaming and that's only if i'm rlly sleep deprived. sometimes knocking on my door too but#it's never too bad yk. but the mic feedback hallucination was unbearable 😭#but also i've had olfactory hallucinations where i smell cigarette smoke#ik it's definitely a hallucination bc no one in my family smokes and it only lasts a minute#ykw typing this out i'm starting to think maybe this isn't normal.#i don't think i'm schizophrenic or anything? this isn't that common and it's usually triggered by sleep deprivation or stress#but i did start having delusions the other day where i fully believed everyone was plotting against me and trying to upset me#and i have had extreme paranoia/paranoid episodes in the past but it's been a lotttttt better this year so idc if that's related#but idk if these things are normal to an extent or if i have some kind of psychotic disorder but whatever it's not affecting me that bad so#like. it's not having a big impact it's just scary when it happens. i have like anxiety n shit so idk if i'm just prone to being paranoid#anyway if anyone knows abt these things pls tell me if i'm normal or not 😁#i'm 99% sure it's not schizophrenia or anything i just want someone's opinion bc idk how normal hallucinations are ☹#but it's typically if i'm like. stressed out to the point of panic attacks or if i'm rlly sleep deprived. so it might be normal ish#ask to tag#< sorry ik discussion of this stuff could potentially be distressing but idk how to tw tag it :(

playing an ongoing game called ‘learn whats acceptable to say in someones tags or get blocked’. a lot of you are losing.
#i know i can be cringe or annoying but like. theres a difference between joking on something vs fucking insulting someone you dont know#is this person talking about something they enjoy that you dont? filter the tag and post content and go on with your day#if theyre too annoying then just unfollow for a bit and check back later even#is this person a fan of a character you hate?? put it on your own post instead of coming onto someones account to bitch in their tags#you are literally insulting a real life person over a fictional character. over a show. over a comic. what is wrong with you.#unless the thing they like is actively rooted in real life hate (racism sexism misogyny ableism transphobia etc) that will reflect#and cause real life harm then it literally doesn't fucking matter if you disagree with someone.#youre not making me want to read and consider your opinion about something i literally consume for fun and because haha autism s/i#by calling me an idiot or by saying how i (a disabled person) am ‘braindead’ because i have a different opinion or whatever.#youre just being mean because you feel like you have an excuse to pretend youre superior to someone#like idk how to break it to you but dick grayson isnt going to suck your dick despite you insulting a real person over him lmao.#anyways. im going to block you if you insult me. im going to block you if you see my post on something i like thats harmless and tell me#how much you personally hate it or disagree. i dont care. make your own post because now you cant make it on mine.#and my anon is temporarily off (sorry shy mutuals </3) because a lot of ppl dont have common decency on what's okay to say or demand lol

How about c!Redd, c!Guts, or c!Krow for the character bingo if you’d like! Or Branzy or Zam if you wanna do some lifestealers instead!
i love a challenge and am now gonna do all of them :3
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(done with the utmost love, i'm very fond of all of these characters actually <3 i just honed it to base opinions)
in order: c!krow, c!red, c!guts, branzy, zam
((i will say that i haven't watched c!red or c!guts' povs, which is why i lack opinions on them. i've been meaning to and then i got dragged into being hopelessly fixated on lifesteal pfvdfnjk; and for the fact like 98% of what i've written recently have been branzy-centric fics that actually include zam a Lot. so. you've handed me my blorbos on a platter and asked for opinions pdfvfndjk))
