Izutsumi character study
#dungeon meshi#izutsumi#One of my goals for this year was to spend more time doing art studies.#What better way to start than with my favourite danmeshi character (not seen: a whole page of figuring out her features)#I feel like she is by far one of the most poorly understood characters in the series. Partially due to her 'late party member' status.#'She's abrasive and mean' - 'she's a picky eater' - 'she's a catgirl who acts like an asshole cat ' YES and that is the point!#Everyone in dungeon meshi is traumatized and messy about it but izutsumi is just less polite in how she tries to cope.#Izutsumi is a extremely traumatized teenager who has utterly lacked autonomy her entire life.#She is the epitome of a ā€œIf I can just have X thing then all my problems will be solved!ā€ character. And the X is 'Freedom'.#Her epilogue was one of the best and wrapped up her character so wonderfully (WARNING: I WILL NOW SPOIL PART OF THE ENDING)#Because she finally gets her freedom! She can go where she wants to and she doesn't need anybody! Yet...it doesn't fix her.#She is so focused on doing only what she wants that she forgets her own needs. Sometimes you have to eat the things you don't want.#And sometimes you have to face the hard truths that you need more than just one thing to make you happy.#Life is not all about only seeking pleasures and avoiding pain. You need to be balanced in order to grow.#Eat your vegetables (including the metaphorical ones: I am eating more art veggies this year by doing art studies!!!)

Sukunaā€™s Loneliness Part 4 (Sukunaā€™s Negative Rizz)

Some warnings before we start.

3) This was written as of JJK 262 266. (I'm just going to keep updating this until I stop finding things I should've noticed earlier.)

Fighting as Communication
Baki the Grappler. This is a manga where men destroy each otherā€™s bodies as a test of strength. Itā€™s poorly written but the art is terrifying and I love it so dearly. Between fights of extreme violence and body horror the characters eat. And thatā€™s it. Thatā€™s the manga.
I bring Baki up because Gege is a huge fan of Fujimoto Tatsuki, the creator of Chainsawman. Fujimoto is a fan of Gege too, but more importantly, he is a huge fan of Itagaki Keisuke, the creator of Baki. (His daughter made Beastars btw.) In a way, this means Jujutsu Kaisen has been influenced by Baki. But thatā€™s not a surprise, a lot of manga is.
Itagakiā€™s work is so massively influetial on Japanese media that itā€™s kind of hard to grasp since itā€™s not as popular overseas. When listening to interviews from various Japanese creators, Baki will often be cited as a major influence. And the thing is, you can tell when a creative has read Baki. Thereā€™s nothing quite like it. If youā€™ve read Baki and consume Chainsawman, you will see its bones everywhere. I feel the same about Jujutsu Kaisen.
The main antagonist in Baki is Yujiro Hanma. He is the strongest creature alive. So much so that he has no one to call a rival. Heā€™s bored. He causes trouble. He kills his wife to motivate his son, Baki into becoming stronger. His son, Baki, who he grooms into becoming a fighter that might beat him in combat one day. Kind of sounds like Sukuna, right?
But thatā€™s not my point here. My focus is how Baki doubles as a discussion about strength and manhood. Itā€™s aggressively bisexual. Men love each other with their fists. Straight up the main character says having sex with women is the same thing as fighting men.

And it just doesnā€™t stop there. The homoerotic nature of the fights is never shyed away from. Hereā€™s an example of my favorite.

He grabs his balls and compliments their size. Thatā€™s pretty gay, right? Well thereā€™s this reanimated prehistoric caveman called Pickle that fights Bakiā€™s brother Jack. And how do they fight? They kiss.

I didnā€™t call it a kiss. Itagaki did. I didnā€™t say they melded together. Itagaki did. This mangaka overtly calls attention to the homoerotic nature of men fighting men, and how men communicate their love for each other through violence. And yes, itā€™s sexual. Itagaki wants you to read it that way.

But sometimes he doesnā€™t want you to read it that way. Sometimes the fights are a dialogue, an emotional conversation. Like one between father and son.

Itagaki is a master of narrative framing. When he wants you to feel a certain way, you will feel it. He also tells his readers that thereā€™s more to the fights than just fighting.

Those are the ideas that help me see the bones of Baki in other works. Men loving men with violence. Men communicating with men through violence. I see these ideas in Jujutsu Kaisen too.
Jujutsu Communication
Iā€™ve gone over how Yuji commucates with other people on their own terms. And a lot of it is through fighting. A conversation without words, learning how someone works. Yuji is good at using fights as tool of communication.

But heā€™s not the one who tells you that thereā€™s more to the fights than just fighting. Maki does in her spar with the sumo guy.

Just like Baki. Fighting is a means of communication. Gege has told you that there can be more to the fights than fighting. It's a tool used to understand the self and others.

With that in mind, I want to reexamine a particular fight under the lens of Baki rather than Umineko.
Sukuna vs Gojo
Baki tells you that homoerotic readings of its fights are intentional. If you ask me, this probably stems from historical stances on masculinity and homosexuality in ancient Japan. Men loved men and women differently, but both were ok. Thatā€™s how Baki can have a girlfriend and his gay fights. Peak bisexual optimization.
What does Jujutsu Kaisen have to do with this? Well it has been extremely queer friendly. We have a multidue of canonical trans characters, non-binary characters, and other flavors of queer characters not disparaged for their identities, Gojo Satoru included. It may not be stated outright, but Gojo and Geto do love each other in a gay way. The subtext is so persisent itā€™s basically text.
In other words, Gege has already told us, yes please have queer readings of this text. Itā€™s the same way Baki tells you, yes this is straight up convoluded gay sex. So thatā€™s what Iā€™m going to do. Iā€™m going to reread the Sukuna and Gojo fight as some ridiculous mating display between two men who are fighting over can miscommunicate their intent the hardest.
Framed as Courtship
Letā€™s start with the framing. The pre-fight set up. How does text tell you queer readings are allowed?

Kenjaku does. Itā€™s romantic. Itā€™s a date. This reading has been made valid explicitly. And if thereā€™s room for doubt because of the sarcasm? Thereā€™s still additional support for it.
We already know how badly in love Gojo is with Geto. The fight is on the 24th of December, the most romantic day in Japan. And in a fun little Geto parallel, who declared the start of war on this day, violence underlines this new romantic venture.
That doesnā€™t include Sukuna who recalls Yorozuā€™s words about teaching love in the context of marriage.

Gojo never heard that conversation which is why the next point is absolutely insane.
The outfit Gojo initially is in resembles that of a groom at a Shinto wedding.

Shinto weddings were implemented after the Heian era. Part of the ceremony includes a priest and a shrine maiden who respectively stand to the right and left of the altar. A purification ritual will occur, lead by the priest, to cleanse the shrine before vows are exchanged. Gakuganji is the priest and Utahime is the shrine maiden. To the right and left of Gojo respectively.

The bride at a Shinto wedding wears mainly white. After the 200% Hollow Purple cleanses the area, the dark shawl is removed and Sukuna remains in mostly white.
How interesting that this battle has been framed as one between groom and bride.
The thing is, marriage in the Heian era was far more lax. There were no major ceremonies. If a man was interested in marrying a woman, he would visit her for 3 nights after receiving approval from her father. Upon the passing of their 3rd night together, the family would have an informal celebration of their union in private. Even after marriage, multiple partners were allowed and sometimes encouraged.
Yorozuā€™s big celebration proposal to Sukuna and banning of concubines was quite improper by Heian standards. Though it is in line with modern marriages. If Sukuna did not consume any Shinto wedding literature, he probably didnā€™t recognize that Gojo was dressed as a groom.
But did Gojo dress this way for Sukuna intentionally? The Toji fit served an entirely different purpose. Itā€™s the robes and pre-fight ceremony that catch my attention. So I propose the following:
1) Gojo dressed up as a groom to die and be wed with his one and only Geto in death.
2) Gojo dressed up as a groom in part as an offering to Sukuna. And because Sukuna is from the Heian era it went over his head entirely.
3) Gojo intended for both of these things at the same time and left who he would end up with to fate.
Regardless of what Gojo was going for here, itā€™s a visual cue combined with the knowledge of it being Dec 24th that encourages the reader to perhaps consider the fight as something other than just a fight. A date perhaps? Kenjaku made the connection and neither Gojo or Sukuna really denied it. Gojo gave the weak excuse of a death anniversary confusion. But much weirder, given how hostile he was to Yorozu, Sukuna did not object to the romantic framing in any capacity.
Am I reaching? Is this reading intentional?
When I start getting this confused by how a translated work wants me to read it, I try to refer to the original language text and anyone who knows it for missing context. Sometimes localizations add things that werenā€™t there or push readers towards one interpretation. So for the rest of this analysis, Iā€™m going to be focusing on the raws.
Iā€™m going to be honest. My Japanese fudging sucks. I can barely read kanji and canā€™t reliably translate anything. Feel free to correct me if I got something wrong. That being said, with what little I do know, I have discovered something interesting.
In this post I talked about how weird Sukunaā€™s manner of speech is. I focused on his you pronoun usage of ćŠå‰ (Omae) for everyone else and č²“ę§˜ (Kisama) for Gojo since this is a strong indicator of how a character views their relationship to someone.

Here's a summary of the two points I made in that post:
1) Omae is informal and either a casual thing amongst peers or indicates the speaker's higher status. Since Sukuna is arrogant, we can reasonably assume he's talking down to people.
2) Kisama historically was a formal show of respect, but in modern times it is a hostile insult, much more rude than Omae. Since Sukuna is 1,000 years old and hates Yuji (who he uses Omae with), we can reasonably assume Sukuna was being friendly to Gojo when he used Kisama.
With that pronoun usage in mind, while examining the raws for the infamous ā€œYou Cleared My Skiesā€ speech I found this:

Kisama. Sukuna is very happy and lavishing Gojo with praise. The assumption it was formal from the start seems to be correct. It's hard to read this any other way.
Though Japanese can easily be dubious in its interpretation, there are instances where context can cut off all other readings. I truly believe this one of those cases.
Now, to confirm Sukuna is still only treating Gojo this way I started looking at his you pronouns as he got excited post-Gojo death. Maki is the person he seems to admire the most.

Heā€™s still just using Omae. What does that mean? Gojo is in his own fudging category for Sukuna and he has been there since the start of the manga. (For more on why this is significant, refer to this post.)
Wow ok. Thatā€™s pretty intense! Weā€™ve got Gojo dressed up as a groom on December 24th and Sukuna treating Gojo different from anyone else. I read their fight again under the lens of explicit courtship and focused in on these specific panels.

Satisfaction. Now thatā€™s a word that can easily carry a sexual connotation. Love as well. The parallel syntax fascinated me in English. So I decided to look at the raws and see how close they are.

Pretty much the same except for "the one who will teach you love" and "the one satisfying him now". Since the one being satisfied is Gojo by Sukuna, it really seems we can assume the one being taught love is Gojo by Sukuna.
Time to learn some Japanese again!
Kanji has multiple readings. Most have at least two. The Onyomi (Chinese) reading typically used for nouns and the Kunyomi (Japanese) reading typically used for verbs. (This is not always the case but itā€™s the basics.)
Thatā€™s probably why ęŗ€ is read as ć¾ć‚“ (man) when Gojo and Geto are talking about ā€œsatisfactionā€ using the On version and ćæ (mi), the Kun version, when the narrator is talking about who ā€œsatisfiesā€ who.

However ęŗ€ on its own does not mean satisfaction. It means full. To be filled. Or fullness. č¶³ (zoku) is added as a modifier after ęŗ€ to be read as satisfaction ęŗ€č¶³ (manzoku). č¶³ usually means feet, but it can also mean to be sufficient. Manzoku therefore has a direct translation of being sufficiently full. Itā€™s not a surprise a lot of food places in Japan use Manzoku in their names or advertising.
But whatā€™s this? Why is this sentence written as ęŗ€ćŸć—恦 or Mi(tashite) instead of ęŗ€č¶³ć—恦 or Manzoku(shite)? The addition of Zoku is what transforms Man into "satisfying". Without the Zoku, itā€™s just "fill". The means this sentence can be read as ā€œThe one filling him up now isā€”ā€
Weā€™ve already established that the blank is Sukuna. The new problem is that heā€™s filling Gojo up. And boy, does that sound homoerotic to put it lightly. But perhaps I am reaching.
So I did what any sane person would do in this situation. I read hentai.
Surely if the phrase ęŗ€ćŸć—恦 (mitashite) can carry a sexual connotation I will find it in hentai.
...
I immediately found a yaoi doujin called Fill me with your Big Love aka ćŠć£ććŖꄛ恧ęŗ€ćŸć—恦 (Okkina Ai de Mitashite). Honestly, I found too many doujins about creampies specifically. (You have internet access verify this yourself.) When you search Manzokushite the results are much more in line with life satisfaction than sexual satisfaction. ...So Gege decided to use the more frisky phrasing.
Manzoku is also the name of an active sex toy manufacturer (Iā€™m not linking them use a search engine.) and a discontinued adult entertainment news company. So the satisfaction Gojo and Geto talk about, along with Geto using 妬 (ya), the jealous kanji often used between lovers, is definitely probably carrying a sexual connotation too.
So, Iā€™m not reaching. What the fudge did Gege mean by this?
Now that we've established that I am NOT reaching. What do we do with this information?
Well, we ruminate on the fight with the knowledge that Sukuna, of his own volition, decided to get Gojo off, probably.
I have forgiven Nanami for calling Gojo a pervert. If I watched someone bust a nut after being cut in half by his sworn enemy instead of saving the country, I too would be like what the fudge.
Anyways, the typical phrase used for an orgasm in Japanese is č”Œć(iku). It translates as to go. And yes it can mean to die, as in going to the other side. To die and go to heaven if you will. Which is what Gojo did with a big old smile on his face.
Thereā€™s also the term åæƒå¤© (tokoroten). It refers to a dish were a semi-opaque white substance is pushed through holes to create noodles. Literal translation using the kanji for heart åæƒ (kokoro) and the kanji for heaven 天 (ten). (Donā€™t ask me why them being smack together turns the Koroko into Tokoro. I donā€™t know.) Which in slang refers to prostate orgasms. This has nothing to do with this analysis I wanted to drop this fun fact in here. ā€¦And this image of Sukuna clutching his heart while looking at someone he sent to heaven.

(This is a reach but the idea of this being an elaborate gay pun amuses me greatly.)
I have another fun slang term: č³¢č€…ć‚æ悤惠 (kenjataimu) which directly translates to sage č³¢č€… (kenja) time ć‚æ悤惠 (taimu). This refers to post-nut clarity sending someone into a meditative-like state.
Oh thatā€™s a bit familiar. Sukuna was giving sagely advice to Kashimo and reflecting on satisfaction and love.

And whatā€™s this? Mitashite has made a reappearance! Sukuna is saying ā€œIā€™ve never thought about needing another person to fill me up.ā€ Which 1. further supports the 'The one satisfying/filling him (Gojo) now isā€”Sukuna.' reading and 2. suggests Sukuna is a top suggests Sukuna really doesnā€™t have sexual interest in people. (Since the context of this convo is relationships and love.)
By the way. Acts of eating in Japanese can be modified to carry sexual meanings. Itā€™s a bit more suggestive than English, but it carries over pretty well I think? č‚‰é£Ÿē³» (nikusokukei) refers to someone who aggresively pursues romantic or sexual relationships. Composed of the kanji 肉 (niku) for meat, 食 (ta) for eating, and ē³» (kei) class. If you noticed, 食 isnā€™t usually read as Soku. It becomes Soku when paired with Niku for some reason. (I donā€™t know why someone please help me.) Side by side the kanji č‚‰é£Ÿ (nikusoku) means meat-eater.
食 is still interesting on itā€™s own. The é£Ÿć¹ć‚‹ (taberu) reading is normal eating. The é£Ÿć†(kuu) reading is an innuendo. It can mean to devour someone, like a cannibal, or devour someone sexually.
Sukuna has made it very clear that his eating of people is literal. Thereā€™s no innuendo. In fact, if you read into it, heā€™ll kill you (rip Yorozu and Kashimo).
Gojo, however, appears to be his sole exception to this rule. When Sukuna tells Kashimo not to spoil his pleasure he uses the kanji 興 (kyou). This of course can be directly translated as pleasure, but the Chinese reading of it can also indicate intense excitement or sexual arousal.

Sukuna is pretty good at double-entendre wordplay if his earlier stunts with the kanji for Enchain doubling as Megumi Activities if read a different way is anything to go by. He's a fan of Chinese literature. It's not a stretch to assume there's more going on here.
And if notoriously homophobic Reddit dudebros are posting things like this. Maybe there's a lot more merit to this reading than I can currently grasp.
Iā€™m still pretty convinced Sukuna is aroace. That of course doesnā€™t bar him from pursuing romantic or sexual relationships. Sometimes thereā€™s the one exception. Sometimes the desire to be with and please an allo partner allows for engagement of activities they arenā€™t into. Sometimes the actions are pursued without the emotional attachment because they physically feel good. Thereā€™s also the gray-scale and demi labels to consider.
With that in mind, I want to emphasize this all points to how important Gojo is to Sukuna regardless of sexuality. He tried to engage with and understand Gojo on terms he wonā€™t for anyone else. And heā€™s been pursuing this connection relentlessly since the start of manga.
Sukunaā€™s Negative Rizz
Ok I established that reading the Sukuna vs Gojo fight as unhinged courtship is supported by the text. That doesnā€™t really say anything about Sukuna sucking at it.
But, my dear reader, that in of itself is proof of his negative rizz. I had to sit down. Learn about Heian era and Shinto wedding rituals, learn more Japanese, splice seemingly unrelated manga panels together, read hentai, and know that Gege is into yaoi to come to this conclusion. I had to rip every little shred of characterization and context apart and rearrange it into something comprehensible.
You know who canā€™t do that? Gojo.
As far as Gojo is concerned, Sukuna hates him. Kisama is an extremely hostile you pronoun in modern times. And if Gojo canā€™t tell Shoko (his closest friend after Geto) is stressed over him being used like a meat puppet by her visibly falling back on her addiction, heā€™s going to default to the assumption Sukuna hates him just as much as everyone else.

And Gojo does just that. He assumes he failed to reach Sukuna. Despite how often they did hand to hand combat and weaponized their knowledge of each other, Gojo believes they never had proper conversation through fighting. He dies not understanding Sukuna, convinced the other was not trying to communicate with him at all.

And if you recall, all of this fight occurred while Sukuna was wearing Megumiā€™s face. That boy is pretty much Gojoā€™s adopted child. From my experience, most single parents do not go looking for clones of their kids as partners.
If someone wore the skin of my family member I would assume they were trying to torment me. And torment Gojo Sukuna does. He draws attention to Megumiā€™s soul being used as collateral and attacks him with the 10 Shadows. We as the audience know this is all for the sake of getting past Infinity using his Shrine. Gojo doesnā€™t know that. Heā€™s fighting an evil dude who is puppeting the body of his son for god knows what reason.
Seriously, Sukuna sucks at communicating intent.
In Part 3 of my examination of Sukunaā€™s loneliness, I said Dismantle is a tool Sukuna uses to understand. And that him upgrading it by making Gojo the center of his world was indicative of his desire to reach him. I also said his refusal to use it on Yorozu was him expressing how little interest he had in her.

Yorozu is pissed by this. She sees it as Sukuna rejecting her and I donā€™t think sheā€™s wrong. Sukuna saved his special Cursed Technique (CT) for Gojo while turning Yorozu down. If weā€™re considering all the wedding imagery and references that started with Yorozu, Iā€™m certainly allowed to read that as him saving himself for Gojo. (Think of how he lied to Gojo about being the first one he killed.)
Thereā€™s also the fact that Yorozu saw their battle as an expression love and lustā€”that the usage of CT is a type of foreplay under certain circumstances since it is an extension of the self. Combine that with the established premise that fighting is a type of a communication thanks to Maki vs Sumo Guy and you can start to see the courtship logic behind Sukunaā€™s treatment of Gojo.
If we are to read ā€œThe one who will teach you love isā€¦Sukunaā€ thereā€™s another adorable caveat. Yorozu uses the you pronoun 恂ćŖ恟 (Anata) for Sukuna.

Itā€™s an informal you pronoun used by people learning Japanese. Native speakers try to avoid using it as it can come across as rude. But in the context of love? This is colloquially called the wife pronoun as its often used by a wife to her husband.
If you wanted to localize its usage in the way Yorozu means it, Anata might become ā€œyou, dearā€. So here we have Sukuna dressed in white, like a bride to Gojoā€™s groom, thinking of him as Anata.
The problem is, Gojo doesnā€™t know that. Sukuna never bothered to open his mouth and say this was an act of love. Sure he told Kashimo in the most roundabout way possible, but Gojo was the one who needed to hear that. If a courtship is going to be this diabolically complicated, there has to be clear hints for the other party. JJK is not Umineko where thereā€™s a witch that can revive the dead over and over until the idiot finally understands this was all for them.
Gojo also doesnā€™t have access to the kanji Sukuna uses to describe certain techinques or words. He hears the phonetics and runs with whatever best fits the context. This means thereā€™s no way for him to catch the double-meaning unless heā€™s a certain type of lingust, which he is not. His manner of speech and personal interests donā€™t line up with the flowery language of the Heian Era. The types of written works Gojo is into are historical war politics from the Sengoku period (known for violence more than the fine arts), Shonen manga, and physics/math.

And what's this? According to CFYOW (the canon light novels): JJK Thorny Road at Dawn, Chapter 3 Asakusabashi Elegy, Gojo doesn't even like ancient poetry. You know, the thing Sukuna enjoys and tries to communicate with.

The Kokin Wakashu Gojo off-handedly disparages is a compilation of Hiean Era poetry known as Waka. This was the primary means of communication amongst the noble class and spiritual leaders at the time. And the thing is, this poetry is supposed to be read into. Down to the quality of stroke and paper, not just the kanji written. Especially for courtship.
Itā€™s not that Gojo is stupid. He just doesnā€™t specialize in the studies that would give him a more critical ear to Sukuna's words. And Sukuna doesnā€™t seem to understand that no one in the modern era communicates like this anymore.
If you didnā€™t know, this is why Japanese characters introduce themselves they often describe what kanji their name is spelled with. Take for example: Satoru. He uses the kanji ꂟ meaning enlightenment. This kanji can be read as Go instead of Satoru. Additionally, the name Satoru can be written in kanji as 联 for smart, ę™ŗ for wisdom, ēŸ„ for knowledge, äŗ† for understanding, 哲 for philosophy, 聖 for virtuous, or ꚁ for daybreak. Thatā€™s 8 different kanji possible if you hear the name Satoru.
This is why Sukunaā€™s wordplay for everything else can be easily missed by other characters. They hear the words and cannot read the kanji like us. Context decides what Sukuna means for them. And since Sukunaā€™s context for most is violence and insults, itā€™s very hard for them to think about his words in any other way.
And boy howdy does Gojo miss it. Sukuna straight up calls him his husband and it took me several rereads to catch it. While mocking Gojo for being unable to open his domain, Sukuna calls him "painfully ordinary". This is localized from the word 凔夫 (bonpu) which can also be translated as unenlightened. (A layered insult! Sukuna is pretty much saying Gojo's sorcery is so boring he shouldn't even call himself the Honored One.)
The thing is...Bonpu is comprised of the 2 kanji 凔 for mediocre, and 夫 for husband. (Please note that there are many other ways to call Gojo a ditz without using the kanji for husband.) And an update from the Replies: Turns out there's layers to the gayness too.

It's come full fudging circle. Gojo came dressed as a groom for a wedding and Sukuna thinks they're already married. The miscommunication is off the rails.
But wait! There's more...
Earlier I mentioned that the kanji for Enchain doubles as Megumi Activities. Let's break that down more. (Unfortunately the Twitter account of the person I referenced may or may not be nuked so here's this screenshot I've doctored.)

So we have the translation of Enchain from å„‘é—Š (Keikatsu), which might be better localized as Separation.
This term comes from a Chinese poem about lovers who are husband and wife in The Book of Odes, Section I (Lessons from the States), Chapter 3 (The Odes of Bei), Poem 31 (Banging the Drum). (Here's a link to the full poem and context of it.)
In summary, itā€™s about a soldier who is on the brink of death, having lost nearly everything after being abandoned by those in power, lamenting the happiest days of his life with his love are ones he can never get back. (Hey that sounds just like what Sukuna did to Yuji!)
Keikatsu specifically comes from this passage:
ā€œOur vow is beyond death and lifeā€, I and you are together I always remembered. I will hold your hand, And together we grow old.
Too pitiful we are faraway apart, The distance separates us to meet again! Too miserable this takes forever, And it does not let us fulfill our vow!
Keikatsu is used to exemplify how the physical distance between the husband and wife prevents them from fulfilling their wedding vows. And that's just what Keikatsu/Enchain does to Yuji and Megumi, it causes painful separation neither of them wanted.
Keikatsu also tells Yuji exactly how Sukuna plans to do it. å„‘(kei)闊(katsu) can be written as ꁵ(kei)ę“»(katsu). The kanji ꁵ can be read as Kei or...Megumi. (It's the literal kanji used for his name.) The kanji ę“» (katsu) can mean "activities", which is how we get Enchain=Megumi Activities.
A two for one special! Sukuna mocks Yuji for being so close with Megumi while telling him exactly how he's going to destroy their relationship.
It seems this has nothing to do with Gojo until you consider the 3rd possible reading from wordplay with å„‘é—Š (Keikatsu). The kanji å„‘ when read as Kei refers to a promise, pledge or vow. When å„‘ read as Chigi? It can refer to sexual intercourse, especially between husband and wife.
So we have å„‘é—Š(keikatsu, separation), ꁵ(kei Megumi)ę“»(katsu, activities), and å„‘(kei chigi, spousal sex)ę“»(katsu, activities). It's no wonder he erased Yuji's memory of it.
Keep in mind, that when Sukuna uses Keikatsu, the only vow that he has made at this point is his promise to kill Gojo. He eventually does that using Megumi's body during a fight framed between groom and bride. And for reasons beyond their control, Sukuna and Gojo have been unable to fulfill that vow through lengthy separation.
Notes from poem "Banging the Drum" Sukuna references include the following:
"And during the operation, he lost his horse, which was a desperate situation (horses in ancient time carried soldier supply and weapons, are life companion for soldiers in advance or retreat), he lost his horse, his supply, maybe his armor and weapons, and the road he was facing that we may lose his life so he may never go back. In all these mess, he started searching, and somehow at this hopeless moment he started to revisit his happiest moment, when he together vowed in marriage ceremony with his wife, and he was even afraid that he might never see his love again."
"And His last statement for his true value is his home, his love, his fulfillment of his vow is his true duty. Hero's duty is to pursue love."
In Buddhism, which JJK is heavily influenced by, horses are a pretty big deal. Horses can represent the path to enlightenment, especially since The Buddha's horse is what takes him on this journey away from his wife and children. They separate in the end though, the horse dying of a broken heart.
Remember how Sukuna called Gojo unenlightened? He sort of guided Gojo to enlightenment using Mahoraga, whose Eight-Handed title is a reference to the Eightfold Path to be followed for enlightenment. Buddhist enlightenment is centered around liberation from suffering. (Just check the wiki entry to verify this.) Infinity was the source of Gojo's suffering and Sukuna cut right through it.
Sukuna has been running around with a broken heart for a good chunk of the post-Gojo fight. And if you take that into consideration with this poem and all the other symbolism, he's somehow a Buddha, a Bodhisattva, the dying husband, the widowed wife, and the heartbroken horse all at the same time. Not unlike his wordplay taking on every possible meaning at once.
But my point here is that Sukuna mightā€™ve seen his fight with Gojo as consummation of their marriage. (There's probably a joke in here about the husband reaching climax while leaving his wife unsatisfied.) Remember in the wise words of Itagaki Keisuke, "Fighting and sex are exactly the same!"
In Conclusion?
This is possibly one of the most bizarre and elaborate expressions of love I have lost my mind over. Sukuna gave everything Gojo ever wanted from Jujutsu violently. He did it in such an unpleasant and cruel way that the target of his affection thought there was nothing between them. Sukuna also hid his intent under social norms that no longer exist. Unless Gojo happened to be into ancient literature, there was never a scenario where he would catch onto this. Sukuna's failure is critical on multiple levels.
Itā€™s impressive. It really is. No one knows how Sukunaā€™s strange little brain works so heā€™s stuck being loner without anyone that fully understands him. (Iā€™m still thinking about how Uraume didnā€™t know Sukuna was a twin for over 1,000 years.) Heā€™d have to let people in and tell him outright, but heā€™s just like Gojo so I guess thatā€™s never happening.

Sometimes, I'm sad about the hobbies I have abandoned or have been too intimidated to pick up. But... what good is it, to just beat myself up over that? My bass is sitting in the corner, patiently waiting, and so is everything else. My life isn't over, and I've got nothing to answer to. I'm wading through a sea of time, and I'll pick up the seashells that interest me, and it's okay to put one back in the sand. The current's waves will bring it back to me if that is to be destiny. I can not hate myself into productivity, so I must swim on.
I think the same can apply to anybody. It's okay if you have dropped something, such as a hobby or passion. Human beings are like that sometimes, it isn't reasonable for you to beat yourself into submission. You, too, can not hate yourself into being a well-rounded person. You must cultivate it like you would a garden - with patience, time, and care.

Hullo! Sure I can provide some Anna thoughts! I have so god damn many. Some other characters are also going to work their way in here too, if you donā€™t mind. And buckle up, this is gonna be a long one. I got a whole short story for yā€™all here.
Without further ado, I present to you: The Commander Anna Post
Letā€™s have some fun, shall we?
So in the age discussion of the feh main cast from a while back, I mentioned how I accounted for Annaā€™s bizarre position in Askrā€™s military by making her a child soldier. She has been fighting since she was a young teenager and has logged a decade of combat experience at this point.
I want there to be some fun consequences for this. For example, Anna is rocking some very serious injuries that will likely be with her for the rest of her life. Most notable being her left shoulder. Just by looking at her in full commander regalia, itā€™s not obvious that thereā€™s any kind of issue. But Anna canā€™t lift her left arm all the way anymore. Her armor does an excellent job covering up the inconsistency, as it doesnā€™t allow for that level of mobility anyway. But take the armor off and you can see her shoulder is an absolute mess. It is, and I quote, ā€œthe worst healing job Iā€™ve ever seenā€ according to Veronica.
Itā€™s a bizarre sight for the kid. Itā€™s not the type of thing she expected to learn about an enemy commander. Perhaps THE enemy commander. But in this situation that hardly matters, as she is the group healer as they all trek deeper into the realm of the dead. And Veronica is tending to her wounds only to find the pitiful scarred skin, warped and uneven from a hastily rushed healing process. Itā€™s from a long time ago, she explains. From when she was still just a foot solider. But thatā€¦ doesnā€™t make sense does it? Was Bruno not her ally? He has the capacity to healā€” he was the one who taught Veronica the little she knows. Even his worst attempts were leagues better than the work done here.
Anna can only shrug, a motion made mostly with her right shoulder. He didnā€™t reveal that he was a mage of any kind while he was with them. So, even if he wanted to, thereā€™s a chance he could not afford to. Veronica doesnā€™t know what to say to that. Thereā€™s thisā€¦ uncomfortable knowing between the two of them. They know now, in retrospect, that swallowing down the truth like that must have ate Bruno alive. Just another reason for his sorry state that they didnā€™t catch until it was nearly too late. Add that to the pile of tiny behaviors that now make sense, right? The intensity of his expression as he insisted Veronica learn how to heal despite her protests and the daggers heā€™d stare into the intricate scaring on Annaā€™s shoulder. Throw them all in. Every last piece.
Commander Anna looks at the princess and unexpectedly breaks the tension with a laugh. You see, itā€™s funny, because this is exactly how she started to figure out Zacharias was Bruno. Very few know about her shoulder. Sheā€™s not exactly brazen about it, nor do the people she interacts with have the medical knowledge to glean how serious it is. She doubts even Kiran knows, to be honest. The only person who knows without a shadow of a doubt is Zacharias, because he was there when it happened. Heā€™s probably the reason why she survived that day at all. So, you must imagine her surprise, when a masked stranger targeted this weakness and forced her to fight left handed. It was the most bizarre fight of her life! Fighting someone who clearly knew her, but she herself could not place!
Veronica was not there, but she can picture the lunacy of it. Bruno fighting his comrade as the commander attempted to fight a stranger. She hasnā€™t really seen Anna entirely thrown off before, but knowing that her brother managed it brings her satisfaction. She deserves it after all the times her and the rest of these fools have done it to Veronica. Feels like comeuppance. She chuckles. They both do. Gods sheā€™s having a moment with the enemy commander. What has the world come to?
Fjorm has a far less positive reaction to piecing it together. After the events of book 2, she knows her time is short. Sheā€¦ cannot face the remains of her family in this state. It would be a slow painful death to rot away behind castle walls and wheeze into soft silks. No, she would much rather die on her feet. Put her body to good use while itā€™s still able.
So she trains. She trains until she feels her bones threaten to snap. She must have been at it for hours before the commander offers to spar her. With how busy Anna normally is, itā€™s a rather rare opportunity to spar one on one. Fjorm instantly leaps for the chance.
So they fight, and Fjorm can see it. The way her left arm lags and the scarring that curls out from beneath her sleeve. Burns maybe? Possible electricity? Clearly an old injury from a mage. A weakness in her defenses that she can exploit, surely.
Anna makes no such thing possible. Maybe she learned since her fight with Bruno or maybe Fjorm isnā€™t fast enough to take advantage of it, but Anna easily evades any attempt to use this against her. Focusing her left just seems to earn Fjorm a swift jab in return. From there, the fight might already be over. Annaā€™s left arm might be lacking but her legs and mobility sure arenā€™t. She takes the opportunity to effortlessly bully her way into Fjormā€™s space and renders her lance useless. Itā€™s infuriating, but Fjorm is learning. She can do thisā€” she has to. Ten losses deep is when Anna calls it. They put good work in and itā€™s time for lunch!
Fjorm is ready to throw her lance into the sun.
She insists she can keep going, but the commander is not budging. Still, she tries to push her luck. But once a look of annoyance makes a home on her features, Fjorm knows thatā€™s it. Another disappointing loss. Damnit. She turns to find someone else to spar, but is very surprised to find Anna will not allow such a thing. They are both going to take a break, or Fjorm might find herself barred from the training grounds. She states that if Fjorm cannot be trusted to keep her own wellbeing in mind, then she cannot be trusted out here at all.
However, Anna provides her with a singular counter offer. This can all be avoided if Fjorm tells her whatā€™s wrong. Because she isnā€™t stupid, something is clearly amiss. And Fjormā€” at wits end and most definitely exhausted, dehydrated, and starvingā€”flips her lid a bit. Begins to go off. Sheā€™s angry at Anna, and her stupid backswing with her axe, and her own inability to deal with it despite her inherent disadvantage with a lance, and how she keeps failing in front of the people here, and how weak she must appear, and how even the commander of an army in Askr is outclassing her as a warrior and leader, and how she canā€™t even hate her for it because Anna is just doing her job, and how that all means that the problem must lie within herself!!!
Thatā€™s, uh, wow. Thatā€™s more than Anna bargained for. She briefly internally wishes that Kiran or Sharena was here right now, as theyā€™re far better at this type of thing. Maybeā€¦ she should just go for the most obvious one, yeah? Yeah! Anna isnā€™t a leader. Commanding people and leading them are vastly different skills. Complimentary! But different.
Look, on ledger, the order entirely under her name, but in practice it is run by four people. Alfonse, Sharena, Kiran, and herself. And it very much HAS to be. The order operates at such a large scale now that the division of labor was necessary. Anna is not so egotistical to think she could run this whole operation by herself, either.
This includes the actual leadership position of the order. Anna is very good at telling people what to do and when to do it, but actually rallying people to a cause? Thatā€™s wayyy above her pay grade. Hardly has the force of personality to pull that off. But the others do, and so does Fjorm. Hell, Fjorm has that is SPADES. Despite having lost just about everything, she managed to rally her broken beaten homeland against Surtr and Muspel through sheer force of will. Thatā€™s kind of insane, and itā€™s a little bizarre to the commander that the savior of Nifil canā€™t see that.
Besides, sheā€™s not a better fighter than Fjorm either. She quite physically canā€™t be! Fjorm is angry that she couldnā€™t defeat her in less than ideal circumstances, but letā€™s be real, all she needs is a little practice. And maybe a full eight hours of sleep. And some food. And water. Can you see what sheā€™s putting down here? The only real leg up Anna has on Fjorm is that sheā€™s going to ask for help, despite the heavy hit to her ego. Itā€™s why the order exists as it does, after all.
That conversation leaves Fjorm with a lot to think about. Both as a person and of her view of Anna. She apologizes for behavior and swears to do better. As proof of her determination, she takes her up on the offer of lunch, much to Annaā€™s amusement.
Much later down the line, Sharena learnsā€” PROPERLY learns, within the realm of dreams. Sheā€™s not blind though. Over the years she has noticed the scaring and the favoring of her right hand. Soooo, Sharena makes an effort to cover her! Stick by her left! Her massive shield is more than capable of protecting her too! And thatā€™s the routine they fall seamlessly into as they follow Peony through Freyrā€™s dream land and Freyaā€™s nightmare.
Anna generally deals with the challenges of that place better than the rest, for the aforementioned reasons. She knows her limits, she asks for help, and she talks her problems through. The vulnerability may be uncomfortable for her at times, but it is not enough to prevent her from doing so in order to progress smoothly. It might hurt her pride a little as commander, but Sharena and Alfonse are her friends, no? She can say that now, after walking through literal hell and back with them. So she doesnā€™t mind if they are the ones to see the child she grew around to protect.
Rather angry kid, if you can believe it! Stubborn too. Getting split and copied throughout time and space as a result of Askr and Emblaā€™s never ending war had that effect. And Sharena gets to see that little girl, stubbornly clinging to her axe, bleeding from a wound on her leg that she knows one day will scar over.
Itā€™s from one of the first battles she was ever in, Anna explains. As a merchant, her dad saw it fit to train her in order to defend herself from bandits. And she had put those skills to use beforeā€” but not like this. Never like this. It was the first true fight for her life. Not very pleasant, as you can imagine! She still gets nightmares sometimes, as you can see. Happened a few times in the realm of the dead actually. But, luckily, it no longer haunts her as much as it once did. Itā€™s just a scar on her leg now!
The sentiment doesnā€™t comfort Sharena much. This is, frankly, awful! She hates how scared she looks! A-and how large the wound on her leg is! She hates howā€¦ unaware of it she personally was! Why didnā€™t Anna tell her about this sooner? To which Anna can only shrug. Nobody asked, and if sheā€™s being honest, she probably wouldnā€™t have told. Not the whole truth anyway. She can admit when she needs help butā€¦ sheā€™s still human. Itā€™s a lot easier to admit she had a nightmare than admit that she finds the very thought of bleeding out a worse death than drowning. Still gets her the help she needs, without being more vulnerable than necessary. Sharena rests her head on her shoulder.
ā€œAre all of your scars like this?ā€
Annaā€¦ blinks. No. Theyā€™re not. Not even the one on her leg is all bad. She was saved by this elderly couple and their son, who saw the fighting and began dragging injured soldiers off the battlefield. They made awful puns the whole time they stitched up her leg and gave her the best tea she ever had. Anna has bought a lot of different teas trying to find it, but to this day, she has no clue what it was. Makes it better, to be honest. Sharena looks at her expectantly, waiting for her to continue.
Ah, story time then? Okay. Well. Uh, this line on the inside of her elbow is from a bandit. Rather nasty encounter, but she returned the favor by shoving an entire container of expensive makeup powder into his eyes. Her dad was so mad but god it was so worth it. And this scar on her thumb is from one of her first times cooking in the road. She was pealing a potato but one of her sisters slammed into her and nearly took off her finger. This nick on her clavicle is from the first battle she ever won. When the enemy finally retreated she screamed so loud that her voice was raw for a week. Then thereā€™s this scar underneath her chin, which has to be the most embarrassing ones she has. Zacharias and her had some leftover money one week and decided to treat themselves to a drink or two or five. In trying to make it back to the barracks, they both fell. Hard. She walked away with this, but Zacharias fully fractured his wrist. Explaining what happened to the healers the next morning was dreadful. Andā€¦ and then thereā€™s the one on her shoulder. Anna was actually recovering from it when she met Alfonse and Sharena.
The princess sits up for that one. Really? Gods she didnā€™t show it. And itā€™s because, on some level, she couldnā€™t. It was from the last battle before the shaky truce was called between Askr and Embla. The one Veronica will inevitably break. And the truce was called for good reason. The battle was hell on earth. Annaā€¦ nearly died there. She should have died there, frankly. A point blank strike from a lightning mage with metal armor in the rain should have been the last mistake she ever made. But by some miracle, it wasnā€™t.
ā€¦ In retrospect, she thinks itā€™s because of Zacharias. Things got hazy after she went down, but knowing what they do now, he must have used his own magic to kill the mage and heal her. She didnā€™t walk out unscathed, but it was enough.
Haha, gods, she will never stop feeling guilty about him, will she?
Anyway, the injury was pretty bad. Her shoulder never moved the same again. But seeing as they were both recently hired to be Sharena and Alfonseā€™s retainers, they couldnā€™t exactly let Gustav know how serious it was. Might cost them the job. So a truly comical level of shenanigans went into ensuring it was kept secret. Including this game she created where every time Zacharias accidentally touched her injured shoulder, he would pay up 10 gold. He was not a very touchy guy, but even Sharena knew that this was something he just did. A tiny reassuring shoulder pat to convey that he was listening. So this was, perhaps, the best money making scheme Anna ever came up with. His apologetic look would shift so quickly into one of so much instant regret. And Sharena, upon reflection, remembers this.
WAIT WAIT WAIT SHE REMEMBERS THIS. THATS WHAT THE NOTE PASSING THING WAS!!!! Alfonse had pointed out in one meeting that the new retainers were passing something between each other and Sharena insisted it must have been notes because of how boringgggg it was. BUT NO IT WAS GOLD. ZACHARIAS TOUCHED HER SHOULDER EARLIER IN THAT MEETING AND SHE WINCED. HE THEN WAITED A WHILE BEFORE PAYING UP TO NOT MAKE IT OBVIOUS. THATS HILARIOUS!!!
Anna starts cackling as Sharena begins to line up all the pieces. The nightmare fully dissipating as she shares in this silly secret. Thereā€™s a chance she would have died with it. Hell, we know of a world where she probably did. This is not a story sheā€™d even give to her family of merchants, who despite being direct reflections of her, do not share the scars sheā€™s littered with. Never had to be, and thus donā€™t quite understand. But, Sharena does. All her friends do. And it feels weird to say that because real friends have always been in short supply. Hello my fine feathered (I am assuming possession of feathers if you are, indeed, capable of flight) @hogoflight! I'm always always happy to hear that people appreciate my frenzied rambling in the tags :D! I have a lot of articles and recommendations :D!! Ancient Greek notions of beauty and representations of it in their art and sculptures is a pretty well studied topic! There isn't any way for us now to know definitively what the beauty standard was (it varied widely from region to region and culture to culture after all) but here are a couple of my favourite reads about Aphrodite and what her representations tell us about idealised beauty!
Probably the most empirically extensive one I can list is Krƶnstrƶm's thesis which compares statues of Aphrodite and literary text referring to both the goddess and mortal women to determine physical ideals for women in five specific eras of Grecian antiquity. Including measurements of the statues there are many descriptions of Aphrodite as 'curvy' with a 'voluptuous figure' and with 'ample buttocks and bosom'.
"When the beauty traits are described in the texts, they are never extreme or anything that could not be found in normal people just that they are more beautiful in every aspect. Furthermore, the sculpturesā€™ physical forms look healthy, they are tall and have distinct curves. Great examples of this are the Knida sculpture and de Milo (the Melian) sculpture."
Of course, these images are still idealised, and there was still a concept such as 'too fat' or 'too skinny' found in written records (and this thesis even includes analysis of pornographic writings and descriptions of the fashion and stylings of pubic hair of women from different regions!!) but from an interpretational standpoint? There is absolutely no reason why these can't refer to a fuller figure. Height was also a very important factor after all and over the course of many eras, it seems like being well proportioned in addition to the length and appearance of one's hair were the most important factors (and, like Apollo, greater beauty was given to those with curlier hair)
Mireille M. Lee's 'Other Ways of Seeing' essay which talks about the forgotten female viewers of Knidian Aphrodite which is also extremely illuminating on how Aphroditic sexuality and sensuality was perceived totally differently from the well documented male voyeuristic gaze (which was overly preoccupied with the statue's nakedness and therefore over-sensationalised the statue's physical appearance) vs women's perspective on the statue which is more centered on the beauty of simplicity in Aphrodite's garment and decoration and in her power and ability to captivate both in her finery and without it. I think it's especially useful in exploring the importance of finery, jewellry and adornment in representations of Aphroditic beauty.
"Some of the small-scale copies are heavily jeweled, especially those from the eastern Mediterranean, for example the Hellenistic gilded terracotta statuette in the Ƈanakkale Museum (Fig. 5) in which the goddess wears, in addition to the armband on her (right) arm, the following: a necklace with multiple pendants; cross-bands extending over both shoulders and hips, with a cascading pendant in the center; a coiled snake armband on the left arm and another snake on her left thigh, and a twisted anklet on her right leg. (The left leg has been restored, and might also have featured an anklet.)"
"Jewelry is especially associated with Aphrodite in Greek literature. As seen above, in the Homeric Hymn to Aphrodite, the goddess adorns herself with gold jewelry, dress-pins, and earrings in the shape of flowers (162ā€“3)..."
Finally, and to me, the most important one in the argument for an interpretation of Hyacinthus as fat, beautiful and fundamentally Aphroditic comes from Brilmayer's brilliant brilliant thesis done on Aphrodite's work and influence in Archaic Greek Poetry which does away with all of that masculine preoccupation with physical proportion, measurement and bodily ideals for a focus on a Sapphic Aphroditic ideal centered in clothing, ornamentation and, most importantly cunning as symbols of Aphrodite and ultimately a feminine idealised form of beauty. This paper also discusses Pandora and Helen in these terms and it is just kind of a wonderful read tbh.
"Combining Homeric and Hesiodic elements with her own ideas, she [Sappho] alters the way female beauty is viewed. For example, the Homeric war chariot ā€“ a symbol of male, military prowess - comes to symbolise the totality of Aphroditeā€™s power uniting in itself male and female qualities. Having addressed the concept of beauty directly, Sappho then concludes that beauty lies in the eye of the beholder. With the help of Helen of Troy and her beloved Anaktoria, Sappho sets out to reinvent the concept of female beauty as a godlike, subjective quality that may be expressed in many ways, yet remains inspired by Aphrodite."
The conclusion to all of this of course is that Aphroditic ideal beauty is much more fluid compared to its stricter Apolline masculine standard. The nuances and understandings of both are of course, constantly being studied, analysed and scrutinised but really, if Dionysus who was both bearded and clean shorn, effeminate, birthed and rebirthed (and twice gestated!) and strongly associated with vegetation can be popularly portrayed as fat and handsome, why can't Hyacinthus?!

I can only watch one show today, so in normal trashy fashion, I picked my Wattpad BL Bad Guy My Boss because I'm ecstatic that PAT had a girlfriend while Elyes has been the gayest motherfucker in all the lands since Day One! Look at him. He doesn't understand bisexuality! He can't even fathom a man wanting to sleep with a woman.

And it's because I get him! He was so light before and watched his boyfriend just get darker. He communicated everything! His worries. He dreams. HIS LOVE!

Yet Run didn't say he loved him back, and regardless of Run's reasons, he hurt Elyes.

Pat has always been honest in his relationships, and for it, he has been rewarded with a healthy breakup due to long distance, but Elyes has not! He was honest, and for his honesty, he got his heart ripped out and stomped on.

And he also picked up his phone just to tell Kim he was busy with another man, which isn't perfect, but is a hell of lot better than him leaving Pat to go to Kim. Evolution doesn't happen overnight for a Black Brooder.

The streets of Chicago were clogged with criminals. One couldnā€™t take a step without seeing a carjacking, a drug sale, a mugging. It was the perfect place for a criminal enterprise to begin and flourish.
It shouldnā€™t have been a surprise to anyone, then, when someone other than the corrupt law enforcement rose up to stop them.
The Wraith. No one had seen her face, but everyone knew the name. A figure in dark clothing, using knives and carrying out judgment against the traffickers and the dealers before disappearing into the shadows again. Those who used humans as a commodity seemed to be the biggest targets.
Which was lucky for the cityā€™s latest big player.
ā€œKaz Brekker,ā€ Inej murmured, studying the blurry image on the computer screen. He looked young, though how old she couldnā€™t tell with the quality of the photo. All that was really obvious was dark clothing and hair, a pale face, and the cane in his gloved hand. Both of which lookā€¦familiar.
ā€œWhy is he on our radar?ā€ she asked Nina, who was slouched in the wheeled chair in front of the computer.
The young woman shrugged. ā€œPossibly because heā€™s the main suspect in seventeen different robberies, but no oneā€™s been able to prove it. Or because his right hand man shoots like no human being should be able to. Thereā€™s also the fact that he sprouted up out of nowhere overnight. Looks like he took control of Per Haskellā€™s gang, but he was there all along. We just didnā€™t see him until now.ā€
Inej frowned. ā€œWhy?ā€
Getting up from her chair, Nina headed towards the kitchenette in the corner of the basement room Inej used as her headquarters. ā€œProbably because he didnā€™t want to be seen. And youā€™ve had other, bigger problems on your mind. Toaster waffle?ā€
Absently, Inej waved her off, mind spinning. Kaz Brekker. If his plan was to set himself up as the crime lord of the city, that could be a problem. Especially if he was as good as Nina said he was. ā€œI might have to pay him a visit,ā€ she muttered, more to herself than anyone else.
Nina answered anyway as she popped two waffles into the toaster. ā€œJust do me a favor and donā€™t get stabbed. I have class tonight, and stitching you up doesnā€™t actually count as homework.ā€
Despite her cavalier words, Inej could hear the concern hiding behind them, and she smiled. ā€œIā€™ll be careful, Nina. I promise.ā€
The other woman didnā€™t look overly comforted, but nodded all the same.
Later that night, after Nina had cajoled her into eating and resting, then swept off to her night class at Ravka University, Inej slipped out of her civilian clothes and into her suit. It wasnā€™t quite Superman quality, but the clothing was comfortable and good for sneaking and climbing. She checked to make sure her knives and gear were all secure, and set off into the night.
Brekker seemed to have set up shop at the Crow Club downtown. Inej knew of the place, but Per Haskellā€”the former ownerā€”had never caused enough trouble for her to have risked the trip, not yet. Sheā€™d had bigger prey to track.
Slipping in was a simple matter. One of the windows was unlocked, and Inej eased through into what looked like an office. A desk lined with papers and books stood in the middle, with a cot pushed up against one wall. Does Brekker live here?
A key clicked in the lock, and Inej ghosted into a dark corner, keeping her steps quiet and smooth. A second later, the door swung open, and Kaz Brekker stepped inside, limp obvious, cane swinging.
She caught the barest glimpse of pale skin and high cheekbones before his back was to her, standing at the desk. His movements precise, he flipped through a file, gloved fingers tapping against the outside.
The tapping paused, and his head lifted a little. Then he spoke, his voice rasping and rough.
ā€œThe Wraith, I presume.ā€
How did he know I was here? Inej brushed aside the surprise. There was no use in pretending now. She moved out of the shadows, and Brekker turned to face her.
Inejā€™s heart skipped a beat. Not for any silly, romantic reasonsā€”though the young man facing her was handsome enough, in a severe way. He was all sharp angles and dark shades, his dark brown eyes taking her in like she was a problem to be solved.
No, the reason her heart skipped a beat was because she knew him.
She hadnā€™t known his name at the time. But theyā€™d met once, years ago. Before Inej became the Wraith, before sheā€™d escaped the life that had driven her to take this path.
The police had found her. An undercover cop, Detective Nazyalensky, had made contact, and promised her that if she informed on Heleen and her entire organization, she would go free. Inej had been going to meet her the day of the bust when Heleen had summoned her into her office.
Sheā€™d known. Inej was sure of it, and if she went into that office, she would be beaten, or sold, or worse. Fear had threatened to choke her, and sheā€™d wavered. Should she run? But she wouldnā€™t have made it, not if Heleen wasnā€™t distracted.
And then heā€™d walked in. He couldnā€™t have been more than sixteen, but carried himself like a full grown man. But he didnā€™t look at the girls as he came in, and that struck Inej as curious. The other customers ogled freely.
Maybe he wasnā€™t a customer. Perhaps he was one of the information dealers who came to Heleen for what the girlā€™s customers knew. In which caseā€¦
She moved toward him quietly, her feet brushing the floor. He was standing at the door of Heleenā€™s office, facing away from her when she said, ā€œI can help you.ā€
Heā€™d been startled when he turned to face her, though it faded quickly. Heā€™d lifted an eyebrow, looking a little curious when Heleenā€™s voice had rung out from the office.
ā€œEnough hiding, little lynx! I said I wanted to see you, and I want to do it now.ā€
Inej had flinched, unable to prevent the visions flooding her mind. The boy facing her frowned, just a little. Then, heā€™d spoken. Not to her, but to Heleen.
ā€œYou have an appointment to keep with me, Heleen. Haskell wonā€™t wait forever.ā€
Grumbling, Heleen had appeared at the office door and waved for the boy to follow her in. Before he moved away, the boy had looked at her. ā€œDonā€™t let them see your tell,ā€ heā€™d said, voice too quiet to Heleen to make out. ā€œAnd donā€™t look back.ā€
Heā€™d entered the office, and Inej knew. It was time to run.
And so she did. She made it, and Heleen was locked up 24 hours later. Inej was free, and it was thanks to the actions of a stranger.
He had, whether he knew it or not, been the reason sheā€™d gotten away, the reason sheā€™d been able to tell the police everything.
His eyes narrowed a little as he looked at her, and for a second Inej thought, He knows. But thenā€”no. He couldnā€™t. Her face was covered, and it had been close to four years since her escape.
ā€œAnd youā€™re Kaz Brekker,ā€ she said, keeping her voice cool. Business like. ā€œThe newest boss on the block.ā€
ā€œHere to stop me?ā€ Brekker asked, an eyebrow going up. ā€œBring me to justice like the Black Heretic? The Lantsov family?ā€
ā€œThe police took the Lantsov family,ā€ Inej said, and Brekker snorted.
ā€œThe police in this town couldnā€™t solve their way out of a cardboard box. You handed them the arrest.ā€
Heā€™s smart. ā€œHow do you know that?ā€
ā€œI make it my business to know.ā€ Folding his hands over his cane, he said, ā€œSo, what have I done to merit your attention? I thought Iā€™d kept a fairly low profile.ā€
ā€œYou havenā€™t done anything. Yet,ā€ Inej said, letting her hand rest on the knives at her waist. Brekkerā€™s gaze followed the movement for only a heartbeat before locking back onto her masked face.
ā€œAh. Threatening me into submission. Interesting method. Unfortunately for you, I have plans that canā€™t be put on hold. And you donā€™t kill anyone unless what theyā€™ve done meets your criteria.ā€
Inej wouldnā€™t show her surprise. ā€œYouā€™ve done your research.ā€
ā€œItā€™s good to know who Iā€™m dealing with. And to know how you intend to be rid of me.ā€ Continuing, he said, ā€œIf you were going to kill me, Iā€™d be dead. Everyone you donā€™t kill gets handed over to the police, and thereā€™s nothing on me for the police.ā€ The thinnest sliver of a smile appeared. ā€œSo, Wraith, your threats are to no avail.ā€
Oh, he could be dangerous. ā€œThen consider this an appeal to your better nature,ā€ Inej told him.
He laughed, sharp and bitter. ā€œI donā€™t have one.ā€
ā€œYou have common sense. Donā€™t give me a reason to come after you, and I wonā€™t.ā€ Inej met his gaze, hoping he would see the intent in her eyes.
He was still for a moment, then inclined his head. ā€œThen perhaps I will see you again, Wraith. Or perhaps not. Weā€™ll see what your code dictates.ā€
Without another word, he turned back to his desk. Inej hesitated for a fraction of a second, then slipped out the window. Activating the ascension cable she wore strapped to her wrist, she fired it and swung out across the city. She needed to find somewhere to think before her nightly patrols began.
She had a feeling then that she would meet Kaz Brekker again. And she truly didnā€™t know if she hoped for it or dreaded it.
