here are my thoughts on the teaser:

- seeing the girls in movement makes the animation look better than stills, which is why I’m keeping my mind open to everything

- Stella your scepter!!! It’s broken!!! (no fr what is that thing??? It better increase in size at some point)

- still hate that ice skater looking outfit Stella wears, but considering that we see the girls in different outfits, I don’t think it will be as difficult to tolerate as I thought it would be. I remember beinbg a kid and not liking all of the outfits the girls wore throughout season 3, so I think it’s important for us to remember that

- the grid serving cunt as always

- I wish the winx’s faces were more similarly modeled to the trix, but tbh I kinda get why the girls have these “baby faces”. I always assumed that the trix are a bit older than the girls, so this visual difference between the two groups to me just puts more emphasis on how young these girls are and how tragic it truly is for them to go through the stuff that they do. Realistically, 15/16/17 year olds look young they have baby fat, that is what makes tragic story lines (ex. Musa’s mom dying, Stella’s parents divorce, etc) even more tragic imo

- I think I’ll never be happy with how childhood reboots use 3D animation and I’m finding peace in that. I’m still not happy that Pokémon went from pixel art to 3D and it’s been like more than a decade. I have to remember that these reboots aren’t (just) for me, but a new generation of kids with their own wants and desires. I’m just here for the ride.

- I will miss how pink alfea was, but the new version looks beautiful too

Overall, I think for those of us who grew up with the old winx (especially season 1-3), the reboot is both exciting but also frustrating at the same point. It’s okay to not be happy with what we’re getting while being happy to see the girls back on screen again. I suggest to keep your expectations on the mellow and just vibe. Go with the flow. Truly see this as a reboot and not a continuation. It’s fine to compare, but recognize that this will be its own thing. New ways the story is going to be told, molded to fit to current times and the new gen of kids.

What I hope the most is that this show will deliver the new generation of kids a fun yet mature and worthwhile show in the way that the original did for us. I learned so much of my empathy and compassion through winx, simply because the creators covered topics that adults often want to avoid talking about with kids. Stella’s sadness concerning her parents divorce, Tecna feeling different from other girls because of who she is, Musa losing her mother and having a strained relationship with her father, Flora struggling with her shyness but not being made fun of it but rather encouraged (thus really impacts me as a shy person who often feels ridiculed because of my shyness), Layla/Aisha’s somewhat strained relationship with her parents because of the arranged marriage, and Bloom and her people experiencing a child friendly version of genocide. If the new show can deliver that, then I’ll be content.

I know I don’t owe any of you anything but I still felt compelled to write about my long term absence. And I feel far enough away from the dangerous spot I was in to be able to make this comic. I have a therapist now, and she agreed that making this could be a very cathartic gesture, and the start of properly leaving these thoughts behind me. I am still, at seemingly random times, blindsided by fleeting desires to kill myself. They’re always passing urges, but it’s disarming, and uncomfortable. I worry sometimes that my brain’s spent so long thinking only about suicide that it’s forgotten how to think about anything else. Like, now that I've opened that door for myself, I'll never be able to fully shut it again. But I’m trying my best to encourage my mind in other directions. We'll see how that goes.

I am still donating all proceeds from my store to Palestinian causes. So far, I've donated over $15K, not including donations coming from my own pocket or the fundraising streams which jointly raised around $10K. In the time since I made my initial post about where this money would be going, the focus has shifted from aid organisations to directly donating to escape funds.

I remember discussing Tintin casting choices with a friend from Germany and remarked how it was odd he often has an English accent in adaptations rather than a Belgian one, and my friend just replied "that's because Tintin gives incredibly strong English boy energy (derogatory)"

Here in the UK there's a lot of weird classism tied into accents. Today accent diversity and representation in broadcasting is actively pursued but in Tintin's time there certainly was a preferred accent to have.

Hot take and not to be a killjoy or the shipping police but people treating Viktor or Jinx's aroace headcanons as if they were canon is not the revolutionary take people think it is.

Headcanons are always all right but we have to acknowledge that they are somehow damaging when they apply to stereotypes. It might not be the case for everyone but most of the time people unconsciously assume that disability/mental illness=asexuality. These headcanons erase the freedom of attraction from people who are already seen as unable to have sexual/romantic experiences/desires, when it's completely untrue and harmful.

You can headcanon Viktor and Jinx as aroace, but I have seen people changing their minds once Viktor is no longer disabled (s2 with all of his other forms) and Jinx is no longer as mentally ill (alternate universe Powder). And it speaks wonders of how people see these characters.

"I never thought about Jinx being able to feel romantic/sexual attraction until s2!" To believe she's actually only capable of that when she's not "damaged" is incredibly disturbing. Especially since Jinx has always had a bit of a flirty personality too.

"I've always seen Viktor as asexual, I don't know why!" That's fine. You can headcanon him as ace. But I believe there is a reason behind it, most of the time, if for some inexplicable reason the "vibes" of the disabled character are making you think he's ace.

I say all of this being aroaspec myself, by the way. Headcanon all you want but going to people's posts commenting how "it's weird for you that they have romantic/sexual plots when they're clearly aroace" is not a win at all. It's a headcanon, after all, and it should be treated as such, and that's fine. But it also is damaging to spread stereotypes like these.

Of course the disabled character is asexual. Of course the mentally ill character is aromantic. It's not as revolutionary as you might think, tbh.

Fandom is not activism and it's all right to have any headcanons you want BUT some of them are filled with damaging stuff and perhaps we should look into ourselves more before treating these assumptions as something canon.

I feel the need to periodically remind people that Idiocracy is a eugenics movie.

One of the things that eugenicists believe is that it is bad for society when the “wrong people” breed.

The entire premise of the movie is that “stupid people” kept having kids while “smart people” didn’t have kids, and it ruined society because stupid genes propagated while smart genes died out. This is eugenics propaganda.

I know people will read this and their response will be “actually it’s satire” but the movie isn’t satirizing eugenics. It’s satirizing anti-intellectualism, and consumerism, and it proposes eugenics as a solution.

When eugenics was first conceived, it was used as a way to justify inequality. The idea was that people who held privilege were able to do so because they were smarter and genetically superior to lazy and stupid people who don’t have privilege. Obviously this is bad and wrong, but it is also the core lesson of Idiocracy.

The movie literally ends with the main character becoming president and having “the smartest children in the world.” Because he and his wife have smarter genes than everyone else. The proposed solution for the things that Idiocracy is satirizing is for the smart people to have children that can be in charge of the world.

I know it’s fun to use this movie to dunk on anti-intellectualism and the MAGA movement, but we need to stop. When you quote and reference this movie you are spreading eugenics propaganda.
