Always hungry, always broke, and always having my mom toss a new catastrophe my way... but never actually being given control of the money despite the fact that I've been able to hold on to my stimulus checks all these years only spending them on emergencies, but she blows her disability and wracks up credit card debt
But see... she'd feel like a child if she had to ask for money for things... it's much better when she has full control so she can do things like spend $300 on microtransactions in a single month
Then my grandma gets mad at me for having to help with money cause I don't have a job, and if I just had a job it would be fine (and no doubt I'm pretty shit for not working despite not having anything wrong with me)
When I get stuff cleaned up my mom just uses it as a new spot to dump trash so... there's no point
I provide nothing to the world, I have no talents or skills, everything I do is wrong, and I'm just kind of a drain on the world despite having nothing stopping me from actually doing shit except my poor character
...kinda hemming and hawing on ordering this cause even $18 is a hell of a lot of money to spend on killing myself unless I'm actually gonna do it. If I get it and then keep putting it off... well then that money would have been real better spent elsewhere
...but on the other hand this can't keep continuing... maybe I can take the money I was trying to save up to buy a new mic so I can actually talk to people and spend it on this instead
#then there's the bathroom which both... I've asked plumbers to help with over and over when they've been doing stuff like#installing the water heater or installing my mom's new toilet... but they just... never do#and then... I've asked my mom a number of times to get someone out but she never does#and now I kinda can't even ask because like... ok; the pipe's got mold in it but I guess I can be like 'that's why I asked you here'#but also one of the cat's had diarrhea and decided to keep going next to the toilet instead of the cat box; which is probably my fault#but now... I can't fucking keep up with it and... I can't ask a plumber out with cat shit on the floor#but I can't fucking deal with it; I keep meaning to on trash day; but I'm always too tired and also only have 2 sponges left to deal with i#and I'm just such filth that I haven't even been able to bother changing my bedsheets in like a year#which honestly isn't even that abnormal; that's how it's always been even when I was little#I don't know... I'm just such a worthless fuck up#and people will sometimes offer money but it's like... money doesn't help; I've got that stimulus check sitting in the bank#these are systemic problems I need to fix#but I can't; it's beyond me; I give up; I need to die#nothing of value will be lost#people think it will; but they're wrong#and maybe I'm also just a selfish asshole like everyone's always saying about suicidal people#I don't know... I just keep getting worse; and then I adjust stuff to make it keep working; but then I get worse#I need to hurry up and die#and I finally have a method with a high enough success rate so... probably should bite the bullet and order it#especially when it has legit uses so there's a cover story#man I'm sick of being hungry; sick of being so fucking worthless and incompetent that I can't make myself food once I'm out of cheese powde#and even if I ask for help... well my mom's not hungry so fuck me#I need to die already; I'm so inadequate and never get a damn thing right#everything I do I fucking fail

Chapter 8 - Invitation
The following days of your marriage were not so different from the first one in terms of establishing a routine and working to follow it, making the necessary adjustments along the way. You convinced yourself that focusing on this while performing your tasks as your father’s advisor was the best way to adapt to your new life.
However, you weren’t still convinced that this was enough to diminish your discomfort, specially when you were at home with your husband.
Tobirama’s routine and habits were not so difficult to understand after all: he had his time to take care of everything and never procrastinated; you soon saw that thanks to his Shadow Clones, he reached a level of competence that a normal person would take years to achieve, or never would. You were still getting used to see them around the house without getting a fright and even worked with them sometimes; they did you favors in return, such as offering you help when you had to do something outside the house or giving you valuable information to make your life easier in the village.
None of this could make you feel that it was easy to deal with the man himself, though. After trying to maintain a light conversation with him two or three times without success – if it was because of his lack of interest in this type of conversation or because you didn’t know how to start them, you couldn’t tell – you found yourself avoiding his company whenever you don’t have to work together. It wasn’t hard: you only had lunch together (Tobirama took his dinner to the office), and when one of you was at home, the other was probably in a meeting with Hashirama, so that you didn’t spend much time in each other’s company. Besides, you barely spoke between yourselves in the few times you both were at the Hokage’s office. It was true that the light mood of the older Senju brother turned things a little easier, but the weird sensation that established itself between you would come back as soon as you left his presence.
Things were even stranger at night. You rarely would go to bed at the same hour: you used to sleep earlier, and while you prepared yourself to bed you would only see Tobirama leaving his office when you went to your bedroom; most of the times, however, he even left the office at all. Sometimes you wondered if he spent the nights there, but there was this time when you woke up in the middle of the night and found the other side of the bed empty; you touched it and noticed it was cold, as if nobody laid there that night, which confirmed your suspicions.
Days have passed since you started living together, but he never took you nor made any advances towards it. Yes, you both agreed in delaying the wedding night because you were tired and weren’t comfortable – you didn’t have a single chance to talk before the ceremony, after all. But the days would come and go and almost no familiarity grew between you two: except for the forehead kiss he gave you during the ceremony, you haven’t kissed yet; you haven’t shared a hug or holding hands either. At first, you considered the possibility of taking the initiative instead of just waiting for him: with only you two living in that house, you had enough privacy; besides, just like the portrait you found at Mito’s house, the real Tobirama was indeed an attractive man. It wouldn’t be that hard to give yourself to him – but he didn’t give you any chance. You never spent much time in the same room except when you were working, and you would sleep first and not see when he’d come to bed while he would wake up and leave before you can notice.
He seemed to be fleeing from you as much you were fleeing from him now.
***
That morning in particular came quieter than you expected, even though you were already used to the silence that dominated the house whether Tobirama was with you or locked inside his office. Maybe this quietness was the reason you didn’t notice the sun was high in the sky and got late to your tasks.
You took care of yourself in a few minutes and went to check your task list: most of the things there still could be done immediately, but some of them you’d probably have to leave for the night now.
You started working as soon as you finished your breakfast and when you looked at the clock again, it was close to lunch time. You stopped what you were doing and went to the kitchen to prepare something.
Most of the times you took the initiative in doing it, both because you were used to make your own food since you started to participate in shinobi missions and because you finally found a weakness in your husband’s lifestyle: sometimes he could get so involved in his work that he would forget to eat or to send a Clone to prepare his meals, so whenever you started to cook, he would know it’s time to stop.
That day, he didn’t appear when the lunch was ready. You found that strange, but soon you were convinced that your delay could be the cause of it. You left the table organized and went to his office.
When you reached the closed door and knocked, nobody answered the call. You knocked again and the silence persisted on the other side. It was when you realized that the abnormal quietness you’ve been sensing was provoked by the absence of the Clones: you haven’t seen a single one of them since you left your bedroom.
That was unusual, you thought. Tobirama didn’t tell you he would leave home the day before, as he used to do. You turned the door handle and frowned: the door wasn’t locked. Could it be that he forgot it open or did he leave in a hurry, maybe to solve some urgent matter? You couldn’t tell.
You pushed the door and for the first time since the day he showed you the house’s rooms, you saw yourself in Tobirama’s office. It was empty as expected. You noticed the same organization and tidiness of that day as you looked around… except for a corner of the table where you saw a white sheet and ink.
You approached and immediately recognized the text of a correspondence. You started reading it without noticing what you were doing. It was a reply to a letter received recently. It wasn’t finished yet.
To the head of the … clan, Fuyuki-sama:
In the name of our Village, it is with sadness and preoccupation that I, Tobirama from the Senju clan, reply to your previous letter. The decline in your second daughter’s health is indeed a worrying matter. But as you asked in your previous letter, I kept this information out of your advisor’s knowledge until further notice. At the same time, all the support Konoha can offer you must be asked in your next letter regarding the preparations for your people’s travel…
You didn’t even touch the paper while reading it, but you stepped away from the table as if you got burned by the text. So, your husband was writing a letter for your father as a reply to a message he sent to Konoha with bad news involving your immediate family and you weren’t informed? Your sister was sick, and nothing was said to you about the nature or the gravity of her state, and not even the possibility of a delay in the travel was discussed with you, your head’s advisor? How could your father do that? That didn’t sound like him! Who could have suggested something of this kind…
- What are you doing here?
You startled when you heard his voice coming from the room’s entry, but you didn’t scream or throw weapons at him this time. Instead of the fear or shame one would feel when caught in a place they shouldn’t be at, you only felt a growing anger.
- Me? I am the one who should be asking – you grabbed the sheet and shook it in your hand for him to see – What are you doing here?
Tobirama didn’t need an explanation to understand what you meant. You didn’t see a hint of embarrassment in him when you showed the letter, not even irritation: the only thing he had for you was something between tiredness and exasperation, as someone who is used to work alone and now sees themselves forced to share their methods with a new and unprepared partner.
That irritated you as nothing else did since you arrived in that place.
Still, you heard what he had to say.
- This morning, a bird with a message from your clan arrived at my office’s window when I was about to leave it. It was sent directly by your father. He said your second sister, who stood in your place after you left your compound, fell sick. He explained that this could cause a delay in the travel because she was chosen to be one of your people’s Captains thanks to her knowledge of farthest territories and he was reluctant in sending someone less experienced as a substitute.
- And what were you going to say to my father about this? – you crossed your arms to hide the trembling in your hands.
- I am going to suggest him to wait until Konoha send a team of experienced ninjas to replace her and work with your clan’s team. They are in better conditions to help your people as they approach our lands. Your sister must stay in your compound and recover.
You were forced to agree that this was the most practical solution to the problem. But you couldn’t agree with Tobirama acting all by himself without consulting you, no matter what your father asked in that letter: she was your sister, after all!
- So you were going to solve this and leave the explanations to the day when my people would arrive at the village’s gates and I start looking for my sister and can’t find her?! Isn’t it absurd to your standards?!
- This absurd, as you say, is the will of your father, y/n-san – he replied without rising his tone – I cannot disrespect it even in his absence.
- She is my sister! I have all the right to know what happens to her! – you started screaming even though it wasn’t your intention, but that was too much – Besides, my father would never ask something like that from an ally! It’s obvious that some grumpy elder suggested that to him!
You tossed the paper back on the table, but didn’t see where it fell. Apparently this attitude of yours displeased Tobirama.
- Maybe they suggested it because they knew this would be your reaction once you found out about your sister – he pointed at the place you threw the paper at; and, after a sigh – Worrying about a sibling is what any normal person would do. I know that. However, your clan sent this letter in an official envelope, so that we must reply according to its content. And the said content included this request. I could not act in contrary, whether you like it or not.
You leaned your hand on the table’s corner, your fingers tapping its surface with anger.
- And where have you been?
- I just came from the Hokage’s office – he replied without hesitation – I asked my brother to send a medical ninja to help in your sister’s treatment. He could not send one of his Wood Clones, because it would not last the whole travel, so he sent one of his apprentices.
You raised an eyebrow.
- And who I should thank for this? Him or you?
This time you sensed a sign of irritation in his manners.
- The best you can do to thank us is to put yourself together and reconsider what you already know about these type of…
- And the best you can do for us now is not speak to me like this! – your patience was now gone and you interrupted him without caring about formalities – I know about all of this better than you can suppose. I have been working on this for years. I know my clan’s head and each elder that works with him as I know myself, so I could even tell you who suggested the secrecy to my father and guess what? He’s not so different from you! That’s why you agreed with that so easily!
You walked toward the door to leave, but afraid that he would stand in your way. Fortunately, that didn’t happen.
But that didn’t mean Tobirama would let you leave without hearing a last word from him.
- You are right, y/n-san – and after seeing you turning your neck in surprise – I do not know your leader and your elders as you do. But whoever this person you talked about is, you should recognize his value in your council. Thanks to the work of people like him, the personal matters of each community member can be kept separated from the public ones, and the individual passions cannot become the cause of a clan’s ruin.
There was something different in his tone this time, though you were unable to tell what. Maybe he was really offended by what you just said, or he was speaking about an old experience with another clan. You immediately remembered what you knew about the legendary rivalry between the Senju and the Uchiha and supposed that his statement had something to do with it. Whatever the case, you wouldn’t stay to discuss it.
You were done with it.
- You have a point in this. Things would be difficult if we didn’t have anyone to guarantee that the laws are being respected. But I am not asking you to disrespect anything. I am asking you to stop underestimating me.
You turned your back without waiting for a reply and left the room. You weren’t sure of what you were going to do with those new, serious information you got by accident, but you would need time to think of something.
A time you didn’t have at that moment, because you didn’t take two steps outside the office when someone knocked on the front door. You went to answered it and found Mito Uzumaki standing on the entry. She was alone, carrying a small bag on her left hand.
You were polite, of course, but didn’t hide the fact that you weren’t expecting visitors.
- Mito-san...? How can we help you?
You must have stared at her for too long or looked too desperate, because she startled at your reception.
- You look pale, dear. Are you alright?
You shook your head, praying for her to give up on asking.
- I am. I just woke up a little late today, so I’m on a hurry with my tasks. I’m a bit tired – and standing out of the door’s way – Do you want to come in?
Mito smiled.
- No, thank you. I have my own things to take care of and besides I don’t want to bother you. I just came to make an invitation – she looked over your shoulder and raised her voice – For both of you.
You glanced behind and saw Tobirama approaching the door. When he stopped close to you, she continued:
- Hashi and I want you to join us for dinner tonight. He knows this has been a busy week for you two, but there are matters he wants to discuss and he might not find another opportunity in the next week.
This last sentence sounded peculiar to you. Hashirama might not find an opportunity to discuss something with his advisor? You looked at Mito again and read the subtle message in her eyes: Hashirama wanted to check on his brother, as much as she wanted to make sure that everything was going well with you. You didn’t know if you should silently thank her or run.
Whatever the case, the final decision ended up not being yours.
- Tell my elder brother that we accept the invitation – Tobirama’s voice was heard behind you – And thank him for us.
Mito nodded.
- I will. See you tonight.
She left in an instant, as if she didn’t want to give you a chance to change your mind.

Mind in the Gutter: Drabble
Tumblr media
Author: kpopfanfictrash
Pairing: Jungkook
Word Count: 1,447
Rating: PG-13
Summary: An accompanying drabble to Mind in the Gutter. This drabble takes place during the events of MITG and is Jungkook’s POV during the infamous Skype chat Rhea has with Y/N.
[ PART OF MY JUNGKOOK BIRTHDAY DRABBLE GAME ]
Lounged in his seat, Jungkook rummaged in his snack bag for the final corner chip. He’d made the unfortunate mistake of eating lunch early, and if there was one thing Jungkook knew for certain, it was that he needed to eat at regular intervals.
Clicking open on the latest IT ticket he’d been assigned, Jungkook read through the request. Rhea Owens, from HR, was having difficulty with her Outlook – each time she updated a meeting, it didn’t sync to anyone’s calendar.
Sighing under his breath, Jungkook leaned forward and brushed his crumbs over the trash. Rhea was nice, if a bit loud and overly intrusive regarding his personal life. She’d been trying to set Jungkook up for years with little success. Jungkook had actually gone on a few blind dates on her recommendation, but every single one had crashed and burned. All people wanted to talk about was themselves, or worse, some actually wanted to talk about Jungkook.
Whenever he told people about his job, their eyes instantly glazed over. It got even worse when he mentioned his hobbies – most people equated bowling to the lowest tier of sports; only acceptable when one couldn’t do anything else. For this reason, Jungkook preferred to talk about himself as little as possible.
People often said he was quiet, but Jungkook didn’t see it that way. It was just that people rarely listened whenever he did speak.
Opening the ticket up on his screen, Jungkook read Rhea’s request from top to bottom. It should be fairly easy to solve, although he’d need to navigate around her computer in order to check her settings. Throwing his snack in the trash, Jungkook sent Rhea a ping.
INTER-OFFICE SKPE MESSAGE [1:05 PM]
Jeon, Jungkook: Hi, Rhea! I received your IT ticket and am free to assist whenever you have a second. Do you have time now?
Rhea answered almost immediately.
Owens, Rhea: JK!! For you? I have 1,000 minutes
Owens, Rhea: not really, though
Owens, Rhea: I actually have a 1:30 meeting – is that enough time?
Shaking his head, Jungkook typed back.
Jeon, Jungkook: That’s more than enough lol. I do need to take control of your computer, though – is that alright? I’d recommend closing any confidential information before I do.
Rhea agreed and, after a minute, pinged Jungkook so he could proceed. Rhea shared her screen and Jungkook clicked navigate at the top of the window. A quick scan of her Outlook showed everything to be in order. Jungkook frowned, puzzled.
Jeon, Jungkook: Your settings are right… let me check with my manager. He mentioned something in our huddle about a new update causing issues. Be right back!
Owens, Rhea: Okay, sure! Take your time
Jungkook stood and called to his boss over the top of his cubicle. He suggested a fix Jungkook hadn’t considered and he sat back down, ready to relay the information, only to freeze.
Your name blinked at Jungkook from Rhea’s computer. More than that – you seemed to be talking about him to Rhea, an idea which seemed so incomprehensible, it made his heart stop.
Y/L/N, Y/N: I have a giant ass crush on Jeon Jungkook
Jungkook continued to stare at the impossibility before his mind forced him to read the rest of your conversation. Maybe there were context clues to better understand. Obviously, you couldn’t mean him. Maybe there was another Jeon Jungkook at the company. Maybe you knew another meaning to the word crush. He continued to reach for other explanations, each one slipping through his fingers like water.
Rhea attempted to stop your confession – albeit, not very well. She probably thought Jungkook was still away from the computer. Or maybe not, and she was interfering again. Jungkook couldn’t bring himself to care.
He knew he should stop you, knew he should interject and let Rhea know he could see, but he just kept reading your words on the screen. You thought he was perfect, even called him gorgeous. You thought he was sweet, cute and funny and Jungkook’s vision began to blur, hardly daring believe someone felt that way about him.
You were the one who was all those things, not him. You were the perfect one, the one who’d sat beside him in a bar and actually made him want to remove his façade. You even went to his bowling meet, for fuck’s sake, having the audacity to seem interested when he talked.
Jungkook had harbored a crush on you for weeks, but never imagined you might like him back. Silly, he supposed, reading through your list of reasons. He winced when you told Rhea about that time he shot banana milk from his nose – but then, impossibly, you noted how cute it was. Jungkook’s eyes widened.
He’d replayed that day thousands of times in his mind, certain he’d irreparably damaged the way you saw him. He was sure you wouldn’t see him romantically after that and yet here you were, pouring out your feelings to Rhea.
Jungkook nearly punched a fist in the air – only to pause at the next words you typed. Rhea wanted you to ask Jungkook out; an idea you balked at for reasons unknown. These reasons were soon revealed by Rhea’s gentle prodding.
Owens, Rhea: so, the last guy
Owens, Rhea: the dick who broke your heart
Owens, Rhea: he doesn’t have anything to do with the new move, new job situation, does he?
Jungkook’s heart sank. Of course there was another guy. No one as funny, talented and beautiful as you could possibly alone – he’d been afraid of something like this from the start, but as the weeks went by and no one mentioned a boyfriend, he had let himself hope.
Your next words were even more crushing than any admittance of a relationship.
Y/L/N, Y/N: Ahh, you know. The usual. I thought we’d be together forever. He thought it was too early to settle down. We mutually made the decision to break up
Y/L/N, Y/N: you know, because he slept with someone else
Jungkook felt his fury grow the longer he stared at the screen.
The idea of someone cheating on you – on you! – was completely unfathomable. Jungkook had never held cheaters in particularly high regard, but right then he hoped your past boyfriend suffered the same fate as Tantalus. The idea of someone hurting you, of taking your open heart and crushing it like that – Jungkook relaxed his fist, realizing he had clenched it.
Forcing himself to sit back, Jungkook continued to watch you type but remained lost in thought. He didn’t blame you for wanting to protect yourself, for not wanting to be hurt any more than you were. As someone who’d been hurt himself, and often, he understood that innate desire.
What bothered him was your underlying assumption here. The only reason you didn’t want to ask him out was because you thought he didn’t like you back. Jungkook had to go back and re-read that part several times for it to sink in.
No matter how appealing his current method of self-preservation was, it had led you to assume he didn’t like you. Jungkook stared at the screen, baffled and began to think back. There had been several times now he could’ve asked you out, he supposed. That day in your cubicle when he pretend to fix your software for an hour, or maybe after the meet when you lingered on the curb.
He could’ve asked you out either time, but he didn’t and now you were afraid he didn’t like you back.
Abruptly, Jungkook stood from his chair. He took one confident stride towards the hall before promptly sitting down to bury his face in his hands. Confessing to you in your work cubicle was hardly the epitome of romance. He should confess, but at the right time.
Lifting his head to swivel around, Jungkook realized Rhea had hidden the conversation, so presumably that meant it was over. No matter how much he wanted to text you and say in all caps, LET’S DATE, that probably wasn’t the best way to go about this. He should go slow, let you know of his feelings, maybe even flirt a little – the idea twisted his stomach in knots.
It would be alright though, since you liked him. Jungkook couldn’t stop the grin which spread over his face as he returned to his work.
This weekend, he decided, closing out Rhea’s ticket. There was the bowling meet you and Rhea were supposed to come to on Saturday. He would tell you then because honestly, he didn’t think he could wait any longer. All he had to do was hold out until then.

Unrelated completely, regarding listening reading method:
I am genuinely so excited to test the listening reading method out wholeheartedly. When I looked up the method, few people were trying it with Chinese, and of the people I saw a lot were beginners with less vocabulary than I have which I think both made the task harder for them and made their progress look different than I imagine mine will.
For example, in my first attempts using listening reading method, I noticed I picked up a TON of words I could already read, and a TON of phrases I could already read but didn’t properly “chunk” until I heard them aloud. Whereas the beginners tended to document picking up entirely new words, and not understanding much of any paragraph for the first several chapters. Whereas again, because I had more vocabulary, my first chapters I listening reading method did I heard a TON of individual words/followed the main gist, and it took several chapters for me to start finally understanding full phrase chunks and sentence chunks together. I 100% think the listening reading method can work with mandarin, I just think since few people have tried it and shared the experience, I’m going to find out how much it can improve someone’s mandarin myself...
I saw people who did listening reading method with german, and Dutch, who like the creator of the method ended up going from 0 to B1-B2 listening and sometimes-reading* skill in 3-5 months (reading skill tended to depend on how much they focused on the actual text during target language audio/target language text portion). The people with the most success usually already had a foundation of several hundred or a couple thousand common words, and had seen some grammar summarized beforehand (both of which I have already done with mandarin). I’m extremely curious how far the listening reading method can take my reading skills specifically - since the method mainly improves listening, and reading is simply affected a bit as a consequence of picking up new words/reading target language text along with the audio during one of the steps. With Chinese I suspect I’ll have to do more Hanzi learning, and reading-only work like intensive reading, to supplement my reading skills. However I already do a lot of intensive reading, so maybe that will keep the skills relatively even.
I do know that only couple dozen hours of listening reading method already boosted my listening skills a TON. So listening reading method definitely improves listening skills, as it is intended to. The actual method suggests learners listen read through an entire novel in a week or two, then do another novel etc, at least 3 novels though potentially more - and redoing some novels again from the start if desired. For my kind of novels - like Guardian by Priest, that means 106+ chapters, 800+ pages, 30 minutes audio a chapter (53 hours for the English text-chinese audio portion, another 53 hours for the Chinese text-chinese audio portion, and lets say half as many hours to read it in English 26.5 hours). So that is 132.5+ hours to listen read to Guardian. The listening reading method assumes you do a few books, so let’s say around 3 books, 396 hours (roughly 400 hours). Well... no wonder people saw such improvements! 400 hours of listening to comprehensible input in a European language will get an English speaker quite far into learning. Most European languages according to FSI take around 600-750 hours for an English native speaker to learn. Listening reading method would fill a huge chunk of those hours, and if you focus on the reading portion too, then that should definitely at least be a solid foundation into B1 I can imagine.
Listening reading methods creator also tends to do these in 6-12 hour reading bursts per day - which I absolutely never do because I’m lazy and unable to focus on things for too long usually without switching things up. But like I’ve mentioned, even me just doing maybe 12 hours of listening reading method so far, in small 30 minute to 2 hour chunks, has been enough to make noticeable improvement in my listening comprehension. If someone is already intermediate and just wants to improve their listening skill, I think they’d see fast results like I have regarding their listening skill dragging up closer to their reading skill level.
When I read the listening reading method creators website, they sounded like 10 hours was about how long it took (for beginners in a language) to start parsing individual words and recognizing them, 30 hours to start hearing word chunks and phrases they could understand, and 60-100 hours to start comprehending a majority of the words.
I am therefore very curious what my rate of improvement will be. I do feel chinese study using the listening reading method at least for listening skills will see similar levels of improvement. I’m wondering if my listening skills will improve a bit faster, since I’m already past the “progress at 30 hours” mark expectations wise - I can hear many individual words, can hear many sentence chunks/phrases, and just struggle to follow some full sentences and catch brand new words until I’ve heard them several times. I do very much want to completely go through Guardian with this method - for many reasons lol. 1. Because I’ve been wanting to read it in english and I’ll have a chance to use that for study which is cool, 2. Because I’ve been wanting to read it in chinese and this makes it doable/more comprehensible for my current skill level (aka following along to the audiobook I will read at a less slow pace/comprehend more since the English will be fresh in my mind, compared to if I just read it extensively on its own), 3. Avenuex made a beautiful audiobook I adore and I’ll have an excuse to listen to it while actually comprehending everything since I’ll have the English and Chinese novel to look at while o read! So... once I’m through Guardian, I’ll be able to answer for myself what over 100 hours of progress doing the listening reading method produce, how well it works when using a book with a more complicated/high vocab style - which is sort of priest, reading challenge wise, and the kind of novel the listening reading method creator recommends using. Also, I’ll have read Guardian! ovo)/ and I will have read a full priest novel, so I’ll have picked up words by my favorite author that will hopefully make other priest novels easier to read (the same reason Tian Ya Ke may be helpful).

Another thing people who have tried the listening reading method suggest doing first (particularly if studying a language much different than your native language, but for any language tbh). The creator of the method suggested: knowing a few hundred to a few thousand common words, and having looked at a grammar guide or overview prior. That’s something anyone who’s already a bit of a beginner, to low intermediate, probably has done or is doing. In addition, some people who have done this method suggested using something like sentence audio flashcards (in English and target language audio) and listening to them a few times, repeating them, until one felt comfortable with them. Generally common word/grammar ones, and you could do “listening reading” with those sentences too (reading them while listening to the audio). This would serve as a primer to learn the basics comfortably before going into listening reading novels. They suggested doing yjis would make the method work better - they got to B2 in Dutch in a handful of months of intensive listening reading by doing this beforehand and they think it helped a lot. While I think it’s not necessary, I do think of listening reading is hard, then getting a basis beforehand as a beginner and/or covering a easier basics common language material first will help. I use the Chinese SpoonFed Audio files which basically amounts to the same thing but no reading (if I used the flashcards still, it would include reading). So I do have some sentences/phrases/words I have a good listening foundation for already. Also, as mentioned, I do read, so for many common words and Hanzi I already can read them. I do think this advice is very good for beginners though, if they want to see noticable results sooner (versus 30-50 hours into listening reading before they start learning significant amounts - basically it just means they’d do 30-50 hours prestudy instead of basic common words/grammar, to make the listening reading initially less difficult). A total beginner could dive right into listening reading (just like my chaotic self first started to try to read Chinese knowing 500 words and brute forcing mdzs and guardian a few paragraphs at a time), it just means it’ll feel more difficult at first for a while, and they’ll be mostly learning basics for a while first before they build enough of a basis to comprehend more. Which is fine. It all just comes down to how much incompréhensibilty can you personally tolerate without giving up. The creator of the method? Can tolerate a TON. Me? I can tolerate a brutally large amount, surprisingly, but usually I need to comprehend had least the main idea and that’s a minimum of like 40-60% depending on which parts I’m comprehending. Most people will feel it’s unbearable until they can comprehend at least 80-90% (and I certainly PREFER material I comprehend that much of). And most people ideally are comfortable once they understand 95-98% (think reading a book in your native language with some unknown words you can figure out easily from context, or graded readers made to feel this easy with around this many unknown words for you to figure out in context, or maybe manhua/manga/comics once you’re a pretty decent intemediate level in a language etc).

How To Come Up With Excellent Invention Ideas
Tumblr media
Learning how to come up with good invention concepts that are within your budget plan to prototype and maker is not constantly a very easy job.
The reality is that I have actually been an inventor for greater than twenty years and even I in some cases do not know exactly how to come up with excellent invention ideas. It is a matter of trial and error integrated with little expertise in the prospective market.
Product Ideas You Can Invent
Family Pet Related Products
Camera Accessories
Automotive Add-on
High Priced Innovation Products
Searching Equipment
Diving related items
Boating Devices
Golf Products
Sporting Item
Outdoor camping Equipment
High-End Home Items
Motorcycle Accessories
Bicycle Tools
Exercise Devices
Construction Devices
ToolsAnd there are hundreds of even more categories you can discover.
Find Markets With Money
Just bear in mind to choose a specific niche market for your invention that has a customer base of people prepared to invest cash. This video clip aids discuss just how you have to think about the market first and also at what rate you can market your inventions.
Determine The Market
That's right, you find the marketplace where individuals are willing to invest real money on each item. That's typically somewhere between $150-$ 300 per thing in my experience and afterward, you invent products for those consumers.
You can find lower list price items to invent but keep in mind that you will certainly need to market two times as numerous $50 products as $100 products and four times as numerous $25.00 retail items. If you sell items with an average list price of $300.00 it won't take numerous sales to get to a million dollars in earnings. That is if you leave on your own enough earnings margin on each product you invent.
As an example, below is a $149.00 retail science task that I designed. The Sonic Levitation Equipment is a basic digital gadget that only took me a couple of weeks to create a construct.
This is a brand-new method of believing when you learn exactly how to come up with good invention ideas and not everyone will certainly concur with me. Just make sure you ask individuals that have created items as well as made cash like me before you comb off these recommendations. Certain you may have a wonderful idea for some brand-new clothespin or potato chip bag better but keep in mind that those products are very easy to copy, the market for dimes and leave little area for profit even when you might have the potential to market millions of units of the product you designed.

Invention Truths
Obtaining your idea out of your head and also right into your hands is just the first in a lengthy set of actions towards ending up being a successful inventor.
Exactly how ahead up with great invention ideas is a bit more challenging than merely having a concept and also declare a patent if you intend to make any money with your invention. DO NOT get fooled by all those people and also invention business telling you that they will certainly aid certify your concept to the sector. In most cases, it will certainly never take place and also they will certainly simply take your money and also leave you with what you started with ... just an invention suggestion and also no final product or model.
We all have concepts that we believe are the following billion-dollar chance, yet the trouble is you require to make that idea a truth. The best suggestions for inventions are the ones that people will certainly want to purchase so that as inventors, we can continue to come up with more wonderful concepts.
The only good ideas are the ones that we get out of our heads and also develop into products. Transforming a suggestion into a tangle product is not easy for a lot of us. It's not because we do not have the abilities however even more from the anxiety of trying. Many people obtain hung up on this idea that someone is mosting likely to come and duplicate it before they even attempt to produce it. The weird reality about this is that you have already failed if you don't at least attempt to begin dealing with the invention suggestion. This adverse way of thinking is so impractical, and also I can not tell you the number of times I have heard it, as well as I see it as an excuse for you not to begin working.
File for a patent if you must
The next problem that emerges is an inventor assuming that they require a patent. While patents do play a crucial role in the invention process, most of us can not manage the costs associated with both submitting a utility patent and then safeguarding it ought to any person attempt to infringe on our idea. Often, it would certainly be less expensive as well as less dangerous if you just constructed your item and began selling it to customers online. The option is up to you and it is best to ask a patent lawyer what it will set you back to patent your invention before choosing.
If it makes you feel much better, head out as well as get an energy patent or whatever shields your invention best. You will certainly require to see a patent attorney, so be prepared to invest some money. After you pay all the fees as well as get your patent authorized, you possibly will be no better you earning money with your suggestion. The stats aren't in your support because a couple of licenses recover also their declaring fees.
Pretty much every one of my ideas has been duplicated. The trick is that by the time this happens, I have currently made my cash and moved onto something new. And that's the means you need to consider protecting your inventions. Become the leader in the marketplace by producing initial items and then maintain introducing more concepts.

Offer your product worldwide over the internet
The web has altered the way the globe operates. When you're thinking of your suggestions, they must be things that we can sell on the web. That's the only location where we will certainly have the ability to be competitive initially.
As we expand, we may attempt to sell through stores, however, we ought to set up our business to make sure that distributors can do all that part of the job for us. We do this by supplying a rate structure that motivates firms to intend to market our items.
What's interesting is all the unrestricted possibilities of the ideas that you can dream up. I have discussed this a million times. You need to research the market first to see what other items are out there, how much they're costing, their quality, and also, most notably, just how much you believe they will cost to make. The truth is that you can develop an endless number of suggestions. For you to produce the prototype and afterward make your first one hundred items of the item is another story.
Keep in mind, we constantly discuss the reality that you should just make one hundred pieces the very first time out. This way, if nothing takes place, despite just how tough you try to market them, you haven't lost that much money. I am not attempting to crush your desires. By only constructing one hundred pieces, we are lowering our danger to almost nothing. In the probability that your item achieves success, you can get even more stock very rapidly.
I assure you that even if you stop working on your very first invention, you will find out a lot that even the 2nd, the third, the fourth, or perhaps the fifth will become your big idea, your great invention. I understand that's discouraging to hear that it might not take place out the gate, however that's life
and also think of all the important things that you'll find out in the process. Even if you shed a few thousand bucks, it won't be enough to make you wish to give up your occupation as an inventor. It must inspire you to try once again!

The most effective concepts for inventors
You may be surprised to uncover that as an inventor, I do not come up with my suggestions first. I generally see the chance in a market where there are individuals with money to spend as well as not enough exciting items offered in that particular niche. If you do think of a concept initially, you require to dig much deeper and also ensure that there will be enough passion in your invention to ensure that it deserves investing your money and time into the concept. Without the potential for sales as well as a profit, there will be a little factor to introduce your item right into the market.

How I Letterboxd #10: Chad Hartigan.
Filmmaker Chad Hartigan talks to Jack Moulton about his prescient new sci-fi romance, Little Fish, why radio silence is worse than a bad review, and his secret system of Letterboxd lists.
Chad Hartigan has won prizes at the Sundance Film Festival and the Film Independent Spirit Awards for his acclaimed films This is Martin Donner and Morris From America. He’s also been a Letterboxd member since way back, joining what he proclaims as “my favorite website” in 2013. Hartigan has always been an obsessive logger: he has transcribed all of his viewing data since 1998 and continues to work on filling in the gaps in his downtime.
Like many ardent Letterboxd members, Hartigan is a diligent list-maker, keeping tabs on his best first viewings of each year and assembling an all-time top 1,000 films over the summer (with an accompanying 26-minute supercut). Perhaps unusually for a member of the film industry on Letterboxd, he’s unafraid to hold back his opinions and regularly voices his critiques on even the most acclaimed films.
Hartigan’s newest film, Little Fish, is a sci-fi love story starring Olivia Cooke (Sound of Metal) and Jack O’Connell (Unbroken). Written by Mattson Tomlin, it’s set during an imagined pandemic—shot long before our own actual pandemic—wherein a disease causes people to lose their memories. It was set to premiere at the 2020 Tribeca Film Festival, and then postponed due to Covid-19. It’s now out in limited theaters and on demand, and we were delighted with the excuse to put Hartigan in the How I Letterboxd spotlight.
Tumblr media
Olivia Cooke as Emma and Jack O’Connell as Jude in ‘Little Fish’.
You made a pandemic movie before the pandemic. How do you feel about accidentally hitting that unfortunate zeitgeist and now consequently being asked questions like this one? Yeah, strange. The questions are fine. If it wasn’t this one, it would be another that you would have to answer over and over again. One of the things that drew me to the project was that it felt like a fantasy that wasn’t necessarily rooted in reality in a way that my other [films] were. I liked that it’s old-fashioned in its attempts to purely take you somewhere and wasn’t intended to hold up a mirror to our times—but then in the end that’s exactly what it’s doing. I’m curious myself, and I’m checking Letterboxd to see the reactions from people because I really couldn’t guess what it would have been like [now].
Are there any prescient details you’re proud of getting right? I’m so grateful and happy that Jack [O’Connell] is wearing his mask correctly. That’s the number one thing that I’m glad we got right. I think it was very smart of Mattson to focus the movie on [the relationship] rather than the details of this global pandemic. I feel the reason it’s not in bad taste is because it dealt with those things as a backdrop and instead focused on people just trying to remember what’s important and clinging onto those that they love.
Onto our own favorite memory aid, Letterboxd. How did you discover us and how did you manage without us? I’ve been on since 2013, so I’m probably one of the earliest people to jump on it. I love the interface and the diary, just aesthetically it was really fun. I’ve been keeping track of what I see with analog [methods] for as long as I can remember. I have diaries and planners so I logged all that old information. If I was running for president, my platform would be that everybody is required to use Letterboxd comprehensively, because I just love to know what everybody is watching all the time.
Do you talk about Letterboxd in the real world with the other filmmaking people? Yes, and I’m often trying to convince them to join. Other filmmakers are more concerned about having their opinions on peers be public knowledge than I am, I guess. I’ve made four films now and each one’s been bigger and more widely seen than the last. The very first one was a total no-budget affair that couldn’t get into any festivals and I was very excited when I finally got it into the Hamptons Film Festival. It was about half-full and one or two people came up to me afterwards and said they liked it. This was pre-Twitter so I spent the whole next day Googling to see if anybody had written anything. I was so curious to see what people thought and there was nothing—not a review, not a blog—just total emptiness.
When the next film got into Sundance, there were people tweeting their reactions and actual reviews and I read everything. People were asking if the bad reviews hurt me. Absolutely not—nothing can be worse than the radio silence of nobody caring about the first film. The fact that people care enough to sit and write about this movie—good or bad—is a win, and I’ve carried that onward. I like to see what people think, it can be helpful in how you view the film as a success or failure. You learn and move on.
Tumblr media
Jack O’Connell at least remembers how to wear a mask in ‘Little Fish’.
Some filmmakers have told us they’re kinder to films after making their own, but you’re not shy at all about being critical. How did making your own films change your perspective as a critic? I don’t consider myself a critic so that’s why I’d be less concerned with someone reading what I thought. Why should they put any stock into what I think? If they get hung up on it then that’s their own stuff because I’m not a critic. Like everyone else on Letterboxd, I just love watching movies. Obviously I can appreciate and understand some of the technical aspects maybe moreso than people who don’t make films, but at the end of the day, rarely that’s the thing that makes you love a movie or not. There’s a great bit in Francis Ford Coppola’s commentary track for Finian’s Rainbow where Fred Astaire’s doing a dance number and [Coppola admits] he totally messed it up because Astaire’s feet aren’t fully in frame. He’s very honest about his mistakes because it’s one of his earliest movies. Then he goes on to say that he thinks there’s the same number of mistakes in Finian’s Rainbow as there are in The Godfather, it’s just that he made mistakes on the things that don’t matter for The Godfather. No film is perfect, but if it can latch onto this one magical aspect that connects you to it, that’s what makes you love it or not.
You had a project where you chart the best films made by directors at certain ages as you reached that age. Tell us more about it. That was a great project. I got the idea when I was 26. This was back when I had a Netflix DVD subscription and it was just hard for me to randomly choose DVDs to throw in the queue. I needed a system. I decided to watch movies from directors when they were my age and see if there’s some common denominator, something I can learn. At that point, there weren’t many, there were films like Boogie Nights and Fassbinder films. Not many people had made stuff when they were 26 or 27, so it was very feasible. Every year there were more movies and more directors to add to the list and it became time-consuming. I did it all the way up until I was 34 and the reason I stopped was because I had a son and there was no way I could continue this level of viewing output.
My favorite part of your account is the fact that you log every viewing of your own films. You know for a fact that you’ve watched Morris From America 26 times and Little Fish fifteen times. Why do you log them? What counts as a viewing? I’ve clearly watched those movies many more times in little chunks but I’ll only log it if we’re sitting down and watching it from beginning to end. I have a ticket to see Little Fish in the drive-in on Saturday, so it’s going to be logged again. Why do I do it? Like I said, I wish everyone was required to use Letterboxd comprehensively. That’s what it’s there for for me, an accurate log of what I watch. This is psychotic behavior but I’m tempted to have a Letterboxd account for my son. I’ll do his views for him once he starts watching movies until he’s old enough to take over. It’ll just be, like, Frozen a thousand times but he’s not old enough to watch anything yet, so we’ll see.
Have you discovered any films thanks to Letterboxd discourse that influenced your approach to filmmaking? For sure, I can’t maybe say specifically, but once I dropped the directors my own age system I didn’t replace it with nothing. I’m a Virgo and I have a little bit of OCD, so I have to have some system. I’ve replaced it with a new complicated system where I pull from different lists and that’s now my main source of how I choose a movie to watch. I have like ten or twelve different lists, each about a thousand movies with a lot of overlap. One of them is my own list of every movie I’ve seen in a theater and I’ll go and look through that and if it’s something I want to revisit. Recently I rewatched Twister, which I hadn’t seen in a long time and is an old favorite from when I was in high school.
I have a bunch of private lists I cycle through; every movie nominated for a Spirit Award, every movie that’s won an Oscar, every movie that’s played in competition at Cannes, the top 1,000 films at the box office. There’s another great website that I use as a biblical resource which is They Shoot Pictures, Don’t They? and their lists of acclaimed films for all-time and the 21st century. I hit those up often. Something that I watched purely because of the very high Letterboxd rating and really loved is Funeral Parade of Roses. I try to see as many movies as I can that have a 4.0 rating or higher.
You respect the Letterboxd consensus. I do, but I don’t always agree with it.
Tumblr media
‘Little Fish’ director Chad Hartigan.
Which is your most underrated or overlooked movie according to Letterboxd? I can say I was the very first person to log a movie called Witness in the City, which is an Italian noir movie I watched when I was doing my ‘directors my own age’ series. Literally nobody had logged it, so my review was like “whoa, I can’t believe I’m the first person to log this!”. It was very exciting for me because it’s great, but I’m the OG logger of that movie.
From your list of every film you’ve seen in a theater since you were twelve, which was your most memorable experience? The cheap answer is that it’s hard to top my own movies. The Sundance premiere of Morris From America at the Eccles Theater is maybe the best, but if I’m disqualifying my own films, seeing Scream 3 in a very packed theater in Virginia Beach was really fun, really rowdy. There was a trailer for a Jean-Claude Van Damme movie and I remember the climax was Van Damme going “you lied to me!!!” and everyone laughed. Someone did a George Costanza move later during Scream 3 and yelled out “you lied to me!!!” and everybody laughed again—so that’s a high. That’s the thing I miss the most about movie theaters, and the worry I have if theaters go away, is that so much of how we feel about a movie can be tied to the experience; who we saw it with, what we did before or after, what the crowd was like, or if anything strange happened. There are a lot of movies I have strong memories and affection for because of the experience of seeing them and I probably wouldn’t feel the same way about if I just watched it at home on my laptop.
I typically like to cap interviews off with what filmmakers thought was the best film of the past year, but we have your data to hand. For you, it’s Garrett Bradley’s documentary Time. Can you talk a bit about what makes the film stand out for you? One thing I learned about myself from the pandemic is that the motivation and desire to see new things is very closely tied to the theater-going experience for me. Once that was taken away and you could watch a new movie at home, it joins the pile of all the other movies. The fact that it’s new doesn’t really do anything for me. Why would I press play on Da 5 Bloods when I still haven’t seen Malcolm X? I gotta see Malcolm X! There wasn’t an urgency, so I saw far fewer films than in an ordinary year. But Time I found incredibly moving and important. Similar to what I liked about the Little Fish script, it’s so hyper-focused on one relationship and within that one story it has so much to say about larger issues and the world at large. It was an emotional and rich viewing experience.
‘Little Fish’ is on demand and playing in select theaters now. Images courtesy of IFC Films.

The CoViD Vaccine
I first posted this to facebook because of the high number of anti-vaxxers on the media. But I figured I’d post it here, too. This is a quick study of why the CoViD-19 vaccine was developed so quickly and why it’s likely safe. Sources at the bottom of the post.
===
Part 1: Why was the CoViD vaccine developed so quickly while other vaccines take years?
Some people cite the inability to produce an HIV/AIDS vaccine after so long as a justification for stating that the CoViD vaccine could not possibly be developed in such a short time. However, there's a very good reason with the HIV/AIDS vaccine is taking so long, and it's found in the genetic makeup of the virus.
HIV is a strange virus, in that it completes its cycle insanely fast (within 24 hours in some cases) and because of this, it's prone to mutations. Because little to nothing was done about the AIDS epidemic in the 1980s, the virus was allowed to spread, unchecked, rapidly mutating and developing into HUNDREDS of strains.
You know how we have to get a new flu shot every year because the virus has mutated into something new? That's HIV, but instead of a new strain appearing once a year, a new strain can appear in the course of one single viral generation. When HIV is transmitted to someone else, it may already be a slightly different virus than it was in the transmitter. This means that a vaccine developed to work in the person who transmitted the virus would not work for the newly-infected person.
That's why, at this point in time, antiretrovirals (drugs that disrupt the replication of the virus by preventing it from attaching to RNA) actually work better than a vaccine.
As well, HIV/AIDS specifically attacks the immune system, hampering any efforts at strong immune response. That is, by the time a vaccinated immune system recognizes the virus as a threat, it has already destroyed part of the immune system AND mutated itself, meaning the even a vaccine that would otherwise work can no longer be effective. This is a known phenomenon called "immune exhaustion."
Lastly, HIV is really good at hiding from detection as a dormant phase of the viral particles (called provirus) can remain within cells for years before lysing from/destroying the cells they're inside. And HIV creates these provirus particles every single cycle, which means even if a vaccine is developed and destroys all free-floating viral particles, the dormant particles will always be around to start a new phase of infection, once again leading to immune exhaustion.
In the case of HIV, the hope of a vaccination lay within the blood of people with a natural immunity to HIV, which is a brand new frontier of vaccine development that is poorly understood.
Conversely, CoViD-19 does have a semi-quick mutation rate, but not as fast as HIV. It was also immediately taken seriously by medical professionals, and the development of the vaccine started soon after the virus's discovery. Unlike HIV, CoViD does NOT attack the immune system (instead, it triggers a massive immune response called a cytokine storm) and it also does not hide undetected within cells. (...Probably. We are still learning about the virus.)
 Part 2: Genome Mapping
First, it's important to note that data sharing and sequencing equipment is much more sophisticated than it used to be. This means that several labs can work on the genetic mapping of CoViD at the same time, and share that data in real time. Powerful software allowed the geneticists to connect the various strands of viral RNA gathered from patients presenting with the virus, and it was quickly determined that CoViD-19 (AKA SARS-CoV-2) was remarkably similar to SARS-CoV years before. The viruses share between 88%-90% of the same genetic code; some scholars refer to both viruses as the same "species."
The full method used to determine the genome can be found here: https://www.thelancet.com/.../PIIS0140-6736(20.../fulltext (very long, but pretty cool!)
During the sequencing, it was also determined that while CoViD-19 showed mutations between each case, the faithfulness of the virus to the control was about 99%--suggesting that it was mutating slower than expected. This meant that a quick response could prevent the evolution of the virus to a point where vaccines would be ineffective. While there are multiple strains of CoViD-19, it's likely that they are all currently very similar.
The genome also showed that, like SARS from years past, the CoVid-19 virus contained the same protein receptor--known as ACE2--which had already been studied. The receptor (or spike, as it's called) is what allows the virus to bind to a host cell and release its RNA.
Other factors to consider that are related to the genome mapping itself is that the COST of mapping is far less than it has been in the past, and it also faster and more accurate. Development of vaccines for other diseases (such as chicken pox and HPV) were often hampered by cost, time, and inaccuracy. Conversely, every time the CoViD-19 virus was mapped, the resulting data was nearly the same.
In short, one of the hindrances to vaccine production is often the genome mapping. It's impossible to create a vaccine without knowing the full details of the virus, as a vaccine's purpose is to produce an immune response. That's essentially tricking the immune system into believing it's fighting a virus. The hardest part of vaccine development for CoViD-19 is already done, and it was done in record time.
Part 3: Messenger RNA and synthetic RNA
Before discussing the vaccine, I need to talk about what messenger ribonucleic acid (AKA mRNA) is.
When a cell splits, it needs to make an EXACT copy of its DNA for both cells. Because DNA is fairly complicated, it can't just split in half like the rest of the cell. It needs a set of instructions, which is where transcription comes in.
An enzyme called RNA polymerase makes a near-exact copy of the DNA strand, except for the nucleotide thymine, which is found in DNA, is transcribed as Uracil on the mRNA strand. A lot of stuff happens after that, but the important part is that this mRNA strand is read by ribosomes and TRANSLATED into proteins.
There's... a lot more to it than that, but that's the basic gist.
Which takes us to the question: What is an mRNA vaccine?
It's taken a long time to develop synthetic mRNA. Katalin Karikó, a Hungarian scientist, believed messenger RNA could be harnessed to create all sorts of disease resistances, but the synthetic material was quickly identified and destroyed by the body's immune system.
Because Karikó was experimenting with an idea that other scientists had dismissed as impossible, it took her FIFTEEN YEARS to create something with such promise that she finally received grants to further her work. It wasn't until 2005 that Karikó discovered a way to trick the immune system into NOT immediately attacking the synthetic RNA.
Only 15 years ago. And even then, because many of Karikó's peers had already dismissed messenger RNA as a valid medical tool, it took them a long time to get them on board, and research crawled forward and a snail's pace.
Her accomplishments DID interest a post-doc named Derrick Rossi, who successfully used the synthetic RNA to create proteins in a petri dish out of various polypeptides. Most interestingly, an introduced immune contingent would ignore the mRNA, as if it was supposed to be there.
It was this work, in 2010, that made Rossi realize that mRNA could be used to create vaccines.
This inkling of an idea required "proof of concept" in order to receive funding for further research--which was slow in coming. Any new technology, even discoveries that are microscopic, carries risks, and it turned out that repeated doses of mRNA could produce unwanted side-effects. It wasn't until 2018 that Moderna (which should be a familiar name to everyone by now!) Developed a two-dose therapy that would not produce significant negative effects in humans.
Just in time, too. CoViD-19 appeared in 2019. And while Moderna, Pfizer, and several other companies had been experimenting with mRNA as a vessel for vaccines, nothing had yet been approved for use.
Remember when I talked about the genetic map of CoViD-19 in my last post? With that, scientists creating an mRNA vaccine did not actually need the virus in order to work on the vaccine. All they needed was the genome--and they could then synthesize RNA, which could then be used to build the protein shell of the virus, producing an immune response.
Unfortunately, companies developing the vaccines came under fire for essentially using the promise of a save, synthetic material to fill their coffers. But of course, that's capitalism, and that's a different story.
But essentially, rather than a traditionally-created vaccine which uses dead or modified live viruses, an mRNA vaccine has never touched a virus, has never been injected into an animal in order to synthesize more vaccine, and is able to be ready-made in a lab using messenger RNA.
Of course there is concern about possible long-term effects of this new type of vaccine. The cool thing about mRNA, though, is built into its very code. After it does what it's supposed to do (in the case of the CoViD vaccine, that job is "building a viral envelope that contains no actual viral RNA," it self-destructs. That's why it has to be stored at such low temperatures. anything higher than that and you'd have what's essentially a slurry of random synthesized polypeptides that wouldn't do a damn thing.
So the worry isn't really whether there will be long-term effects from this vaccine, but whether the synthetic mRNA will be able to survive long enough to produce enough fake virus shells to create an immune response. So far, trials have proved successful.
Part 4: Polio, and Why Most Vaccines Are So Extensively Tested
There's a good reason that the FDA requires such extensive, lengthy testing on vaccines, and it has to do with the polio vaccine.
I'm sure most opponents of vaccination cite the early polio vaccine as a reason not to vaccinate--that vaccines are inherently dangerous and should be approached with caution.
Trials of the polio vaccine went well, and were well-tolerated, which meant scientists were initially baffled when a vaccine caused 40,000 cases of polio in children, 200 of which were left paralyzed, and 10 of which died.
At first, people were convinced that this meant vaccines were dangerous--many blamed Jonas Salk for pushing the vaccine through R&D and dooming everyone who'd gotten the vaccine to polio.
So what happened? Did dangerous chemicals in the vaccine cause a weak immune system leading to polio? Was the process itself flawed? Was it time to give up on vaccines as a valid form of disease protection???
Fortunately, no.
Just like today, there were many nay-sayers about vaccines, and those who were against putting them into their body. See, Salk used formaldehyde to de-activate the virus, which people recognized as being very poisonous. despite the fact that the vaccine itself contained none of the chemical, the public demanded an alternative if they were to take it.
So a company called Cutter Labs decided not to use formaldehyde to deactivate the vaccine. In fact, they didn't de-activate the vaccine at all. Because of a lack of rigorous safety protocol at the time, the error was then missed by health inspectors, who ok'd giving a completely live virus to 40,000 children.
This incident, called the Cutter Incident, led to more rigorous oversight and testing when it came to vaccination. It also let to what's called "attunated" viruses, which are weakened, but still living viruses. These attunated viruses have been responsible for outbreaks of poliomyelitis around the world, all because people feared the process used to kill the virus.
The point is, the reason it takes so long to approve vaccines under normal circumstances is that you are dealing with a medication that contains actual viruses (albeit usually dead viruses) plus agents designed to provoke an immune response, such as aluminum. Deactivated vaccines also used to contain thimerosal as a binding agent preservative. While not elemental mercury, thimerosal was derived from mercury, and thus just as suspect as Salk's formaldehyde.
In any case, there's a lot of people concerned about what they are putting into their bodies. And while the use of aluminum adjuvants has been proven safe over decades of vaccinations, every single one still must be tested in order to determine efficacy and safety. Pushing a vaccine that doesn't work is just as bad as pushing a vaccine that causes harm to the patient.
To be fair, it is likely the alum compound that causes vaccine reactions, which means it's up to medical science to do better! Thankfully there are many new adjuvants on the market, including MF59, an oil emulsion which is derived from shark liver; most people consider this a much better option than heavy metal, and it is the most likely candidate for use as an adjuvant in the CoViD-19 vaccine.
If, that is, an adjuvant is needed at all. Currently, there's some speculation that the mRNA in the CoViD vaccine could alone provoke a strong immune response.
Part 5: Putting it all together!
1. Coronavirus was caught quickly and an immediate medical response was established. Using new genetic mapping technology that has only been developed within the last decade, CoViD-19's genome was mapped and made available.
2. CoViD-19 does not hide in, nor does it attack the immune system. For this reason, it's much easier to create an immune response to a vaccine as compared to, say, the HIV virus. Unlike the HIV virus and the common cold, CoViD-19 also currently has limited strains and mutations, making it the perfect time to create a vaccine.
3. The vaccine does not use viral particles. It doesn't need to be "incubated" and then tested after each incubation period. There is no chance for the vaccine to cause the virus in any dose. Instead, it uses synthetic messenger RNA in prompt the body into synthesizing the protein shell of the virus, which activates our immune system.
4. It contains a natural adjuvant found in shark liver oil, rather than heavy metal aluminum. This cuts down on the testing time. Adjuvants provoke an immune response more quickly than the virus alone, although Pfizer stated that the vaccine would likely work without one.
5. Lastly, this can't be overstated enough, the idea behind testing is to have a successful trial in as many people as possible. Other vaccines fail because of unfavorable trials. (For example, chicken pox took so long to develop a vaccine for because of the lack of technologies we had today leading to low efficacy rates in test subjects.) Compared with the MMR vaccine, which has an average efficacy of 90%, the CoViD-19 vaccine achieved a 95% efficacy rate in 10 months. There was very little "back to the drawing board" except in one case where the company developing a vaccine trial dropped completely.
I do want to state here that it is normal for medical science to work faster and better as time progresses. Vaccine science IS medical science, and has only been utilized for the last hundred years. All medical sciences progress and become more reliable as time goes on, including heart transplants, treatment of HIV, diabetes, hell--even Alzimers may have a cure in the next decade thanks to various breakthroughs in the last three years.
It is okay to be cautious. It is not okay to dismiss science because you're afraid or because you don't understand it. It's okay to ask for help learning about these things.
We science people aren't here to lie to you. We look forward to a future where serious disease is a simple hindrance, and not a life-changing event.

Step By Step Proven Methods To Make Your Small Child An Amazing Reader! (Check Now)
1. Importance of “Early Reading” To Your Child
Teaching your baby to read is becoming a more and more high priority for people now because it becomes clear that learning to read at a young age offers numerous advantages for the kid once he or she begins school.
Learning to read at a young age is significant for the event of the child. It helps them develop a way better understanding of their surroundings, allows them to collect information from printed materials, and provides them with an exquisite source of entertainment once they read stories and rhymes.
Studies have consistently found that teaching a baby to read and helping children to develop phonemic awareness well before entering school can significantly improve their development in reading and spelling.
However, when it involves teaching babies to read, there are two main teaching methods.
2. Entire Language vs Phonics Method
These two main methods of teaching a baby or child to read are the entire language method, and thus the phonics and phonemic awareness method (the phonetic approach), which should be the well-liked pedagogics in helping children learn to read.
Some prefer the entire language method, others use the phonics approach, while some educators use a mixture of various approaches.
Most parents are probably aware of one very fashionable “reading” program, which can be an entire word approach. Using this method, your baby simply learns to memorize the words without actually reading the words.
With the Look-Say approach of entire learning, a toddler begins with memorizing sight words and is then taught various strategies of deciding the text from various clues.
The entire language method produces inaccurate and poor readers compared to students of the phonetic approach. Using the entire word approach, English is being taught as an ideographic language like Chinese.
One among the foremost important arguments from entire language advocates is that teaching a baby to read using phonics, breaks up the words into letters and syllables, which have no actual meaning, yet they fail to acknowledge the actual fact that when the child is during a position to decode the word, they’re able to actually READ that entire word, pronounce it, and understand its meaning.
So in practicality, it’s a really weak argument. English is an alphabetic system — it’s not an ideograph system like Chinese characters, and will not be taught using an ideographic approach.
Experts always say that if your baby can speak, then you’ll begin to show your baby to read.
Tumblr media
There is no scientific evidence to suggest that teaching your baby to read using the entire word approach is an efficient method. In fact, there are large numbers of studies which have consistently stated that teaching children to reading using phonemic awareness could also be a highly effective method.
Teaching phonemic awareness to children significantly improves their reading quite an instruction that lacks any attention to phonemic awareness — a statement made by the National Reading Panel.
The effectiveness of teaching a baby to read using either the entire language or phonics method is settled by the statements made by the National Reading Panel. They reviewed over 1,960 different studies to form their conclusions.
3. Help Your Small Child To Learn “Early Reading”
Most parents encounter the favoured entire word teaching approach and it’s being heavily marketed. The matters during this approach are your baby doesn’t actually “read”, but actually “memorise”, and the way children alleged to read newer, and more complicated words as they get older without an appropriate method of decoding those words?
This is often where expert’s long and extensive research into phonics and phonemic awareness began.
After many years of research and learning the maximum amount as experts could, they felt comfortable enough with simple phonemic awareness pedagogics.
Children develop at different rates, and a few of youngsters will develop reading skills quicker than other children; however, what’s important is that because the parent, you’re keenly conscious of your child’s maturity and reading level to supply them with appropriate books and activities to assist them to improve.
Tumblr media
As parents, you are the foremost important teacher for your children. you’ll introduce your child to books and reading.
Below are some tips to assist you to teach your child to read:
Tip #1
Teach your child alphabet letters and sounds at an equivalent time. Studies have shown that children learn best once they’re taught the letter names and letter sounds at the same time.
In one study, 58 preschool children were randomly assigned to receive instructions in letter names and sounds, letter sound only, or numbers (control group).
The results of this study are consistent with past research results in that it found children receiving letter name and sound instruction were presumably to seek out out the sounds of letters whose names included cues to their sounds.
When teaching your child the letter sounds, have them slowly trace the letter, while saying the sound of the letter at an equivalent time. for instance, if you were teaching your child the letter “A”, you’d say:
“The letter A makes the /A/ (ah) sound.”
Then have your child say the /A/ sound while tracing the letter alongside his or her index.
Tip #2
When teaching your child to read, always emphasize with them that the right reading order should be from left to right, and top to bottom. To adults, this might sound so basic that anyone should know it.
However, our kids aren’t born with the knowledge that printed text should be read from left to right and top to bottom, and this is often why you’ll sometimes see children reading from right to left instead — because they were never explicitly taught to read from left to right.
Tip #3
Teach final consonant blends first. Teaching words such “at” and “and” can lead your child on to learning words that rhyme with these. for instance, you can have:
Lat
Pat
Mat
Cat
Sat
Bat
Spat
Chat
For “and”, you can have these rhyming words:
Sand
Band
Land
Hand
Stand
Bland
Brand
Grand
and so on…
You can start teaching blends once your child has learned the sounds of some consonants and short vowel sounds. You don’t need to wait until your child has mastered the sounds of all the letters before teaching blends.
4. Proven and Effective Approach
Learning to read may be a long process for your small child, but it doesn’t have to be a difficult process. Broken down into intuitive and logical steps, a child as young as two years old can learn to read, and older children can accomplish even more.
Tumblr media
To make the learning to read process simple and effective, experts made “Reading Head Start Program”.
The Reading Head Start approach is one of the most well researched and highly successful reading strategies available for young kids and it’s so crucial to get a head start on kids’ reading success at an early age.
Not only does early reading success predict reading success at older ages… it predicts success across the board, in any subject. And it’s impossibly hard to catch up if reading is not mastered early that consists of proven strategies that help the kids to learn to read sooner than other kids.
If parents provide their children at least 15 min daily at their home with this program, they can see the astounding results within the week. You will be surprised and even your neighbours too by watching this change inside your kid.
There are almost more than 5000 parents who have benefitted their children at a very young age. Their children have become an amazing reader.
Children are performing very well in their academics and as well as in their daily lives. Now, you can also be among those parents and can assure your child’s success in the coming future.
Now, as a responsible parent to your small child, it totally depends on you that whether you want to provide a strong foundation to your small child for his/her bright future, don’t you?
Yes! I want to help my child to become an amazing reader.

What a way to celebrate Tobirama’s birthday. xD
Pairing: None Word count: 4022 Chapter: 3/4 Rated: T+ Summary: Months after the village is built Izuna is near his breaking point. Peace is nice, don’t get him wrong, but he could do without the pale shadow that follows behind him everywhere he goes. All he wants is to understand. What the hell is Tobirama’s obsession with watching him?
Follow the link or read it under the cut!
KO-FI and commission info in the header!
Chapter 3
As a child Izuna can remember his mother teaching him a method of meditating on his own breathing pattern in an attempt to rein in his temper. It had worked to some extent then. At the moment he finds himself having much more limited success. It wouldn’t be so bad if his unwanted mission partner would only travel beside him but no matter what speed they move at somehow Tobirama always ends up just a step or two behind and it’s driving him absolutely wild.
“Have you tried some sort of rewards system?”
“Different ones, yes.”
Even worse still is that they have managed to keep up a semblance of amicable conversation for nearly the entire journey as if there is nothing more between them but the fact that their brothers are friends. Tobirama’s voice carries no hint of aggression, no undue curiosity, and there are certainly no hints of any romantic endeavors. At some point they find themselves on the topic of a child in the Uchiha clan who doesn’t pay even half the attention he should to his lessons and Izuna is vaguely surprised that his companion’s interest seems to be more for the boy than for him.
“Behavioral based or progression based?”
“What’s the difference?”
“If the child feels he is unable to obtain whatever goals have been set for him then he may not feel motivated even by the promise of a reward.”
Listening to him speak in such a bland tone leaves Izuna confused. He isn’t sure whether the man is trying to pretend his weird stalking isn’t happening or if he is merely striving for a bit of normalcy while they are forced to travel together but either way the efforts are pointless. It‘s impossible to pretend that everything is normal while Tobirama refuses to actually walk beside him.
“Huh, I never thought of it like that,” he murmurs, willing to keep the conversation up if only so he isn’t traveling in silence with an old enemy standing just behind his unprotected back. “We’ve tried to do it like that and we’ve tried to bribe him with sweets for even just showing up every day – I swear every tooth in his head is a sweet one. Nothing works.”
While his companion hums thoughtfully Izuna tries to remember if there are any other methods they have used to try and convince little Kagami to take his training more seriously. The little tyke has so much potential. Such a shame that he insists on wasting it all. If he had some other interest or passion that he were trying to pursue instead Izuna might understand, not all of their clan members are fighters after all, but at times it feels as though Kagami seems determined to simply never grow up.
A pause in the steps behind him catches his attention and Izuna turns to see that Tobirama has gone stiff, his head turned away, eyes narrowed where they stare in to the middle distance off east. Instinctively Izuna turns to look that way as well only to realize that Tobirama probably isn’t actually looking with his eyes.
“Three inbound at high speeds. Feels like Kaminari no Kuni shinobi.”
“Gods, how powerful is your sensing?” Izuna grumbles, loosening his sword in its sheath.
“More than I ever allowed the Uchiha to discover.” Tobirama’s gaze flicks over towards him and there is something dark hidden there before he looks away. “An oversight, perhaps, that I have not seen fit to share my true abilities with our new allies.”
“Right. Let’s take care of this and then we’re having a nice long conversation on exactly what you’re capable of.”
Before there is time for any sort of reply their new company arrives, flitting in to the treetops above them and pausing to assess the situation. Izuna takes a good grip on the handle of his favorite sword, tightening his fingers one by one, counting breaths just as his mother taught him.
In, out, one. Three opponents, one male and two female.
In, out, two. A sword glimmers in the hand of one female, something heavy and club like in the hands of the male, close combat fighters.
In, out, three. Large chakra stores burn almost tangibly in the air around the third, clearly a distance fighter, he will need to keep an eye out for whatever jutsu she has up her sleeve.
He never gets to four breaths. From behind him Tobirama explodes in to motion, charging the woman nearly bursting at the seams with her own chakra. A low hiss cuts the air just before the man leaps in to defend his companion. Izuna rolls his shoulders and acknowledges that he has been left to face the woman bearing a sword to match his own, the perfect opponent. Out of all the spars he has enjoyed with many and varied people since moving to Konoha very few of them have been able to match his skill with a blade enough to offer a proper challenge. In a strange way he almost misses his battles with the man he is currently fighting alongside if only because he worries that without Tobirama to face he might lose his edge.
Sparks leap between their weapons and Izuna realizes that he has moved out of habit without even consciously deciding to, sword leaping to hand and meeting the one aiming for his neck. For a single heartbeat they struggle, brute strength against brute strength, then the woman twists and dodges back once she realizes that his bulk outweighs her own. Rather than allow her the time to think up another angle of attack Izuna hefts his sword and watches her respond with a snarl of frustration. Good. That means she is off balance and an opponent who has no time to think is an opponent he can easily beat.
Only sharp reflexes stop his blade from cutting through the wrong flesh, pulling up a mere instant before he would have pierced Tobirama through the side as his mission partner suddenly appears between them to deflect his opponent’s blade. Then he is skipping away again with a snarl of his own. Izuna floods his eyes with chakra just to take in the expression of something almost like desperation on the man’s face. His reputation being what it is, revealing his greatest battle advantage has the added benefit of causing his opponent to hesitate. Not many people who know what it can do are stupid enough to attack an active Sharingan straight on and Izuna is oddly glad to see that his opponent is not stupid. Easy kills are no fun.
As Tobirama is pressed back by his own two assailants Izuna rushes in to keep this one busy. He can’t afford to let her find her bearings; he learned the hard way when he was younger to never underestimate how many tricks your opponent might have up their sleeve. She might seem like her skills barely match his own but he has no way of knowing what tricks or seals or the like she might pull out at a moment’s notice.
Neither does he have a chance to find out, as it happens. Each time their clash looks as though it might be about to get interesting Tobirama appears between them. At first Izuna accepts that he simply needs to dodge quite a lot while trying to face a long range and a short range fighter at the same time; keeping up with two different styles means keeping on your toes. It isn’t until his Sharingan focuses in on the pair chasing his partner around the field that he realizes both of them are downright ragged looking. One bleeds from several places and the other looks just on the verge of an asthmatic attack so out of breath are they. In contrast Tobirama looks tense yet still in good condition.
So if it’s Tobirama that is leading them around by the nose rather than the one getting chased why on earth does he keep dashing in between Izuna and his own kill? There’s a whole forest here to move around in.
Annoying as it is, the trained shinobi in his soul can’t help but admire how quickly Tobirama moves from place to place, how seamlessly he manages to insert himself just in time to deflect whatever attack Izuna is about to meet and then dance away again as though he’d never been there. Whatever else he is there can be no denying that he’s a skilled fighter. The problem is trying to figure out what the hell he is up to.
It simply doesn’t make sense, Izuna thinks as he takes his opportunity to bull in close and drive the woman back with a rapid flurry of attacks. Weeks and months of stalking that Izuna has been interpreting as some lingering form of aggression. Now suddenly the man is jumping in front of him in battle. Has he been making observations leading him to the conclusion that Izuna’s skills have diminished somehow? That certainly makes more sense than the ridiculous rumors of forbidden love, although it’s also wildly more insulting. Yet even that theory includes enough gaping holes that he can’t quite believe it either.
By the time Izuna finds an opening to drive his blade through his opponent’s neck and watch her gurgle out her last curses on the forest floor he is equal parts curious and livid. Tobirama dispatches of his own two assailants only a moment later as though he has merely been playing with them as some morbid excuse to remain occupied. He waits just long enough to clean his sword and slide it back in to the scabbard across his back, then Izuna is marching across the torn clearing to take the collar of his old rival’s armor and drag them face to face, oddly unsurprised that he is allowed to do so with no resistance.
“What the fuck is your problem?” he growls. “I’m not so softened by this stupid dream of our brothers’ that I’ve forgotten how to defend myself! I had that covered!”
“Your skill was never in question,” Tobirama murmurs. He looks entirely calm, unruffled, and that only irritates Izuna further.
“It sure as hell feels questioned with you babying me like some genin out on their first run! If you think I need to polish a few things then say it to my face, damn it, quit treating me with kid gloves! I didn’t need it back home and I don’t need it here!”
Composed as he ever is, Tobirama fails to react in any satisfying sort of way. He fails to so much as blink while Izuna screams in his face but there is one thing to be gained from overreacting. From this close – perhaps the first time they have ever been so close outside of battle – it is plain to see the well of something dark and deep in those red eyes so like the Sharingan, something that brings ice crawling up Izuna’s spine though he can’t yet define what it is. It’s enough to snap his jaw shut and make him step away to watch quietly as Tobirama turns, murmuring again that they should press on to their destination.
An uncomfortable mixture of anger and confusion with shades of worry twists itself into knots inside Izuna’s belly, keeping his mouth shut for the rest of their mission, speaking only when it is absolutely necessary. On the journey home he can feel the back of his neck itching with Tobirama’s eyes almost every step of the way but he holds his tongue for fear of what else he might see in that unwavering gaze.
When they make it back to the village the first thing they do is make their report to Hashirama, of course. Madara joins them and together they remain sequestered for over an hour discussing the results of their goodwill efforts. Despite his attempts to appear nonchalant Izuna is fairly sure the clan they were visiting with had noticed some tensions between himself and Tobirama but in a strange way it had actually worked out in their favor as their hosts seemed to be impressed with how well they function together anyway. Talking about that without making a big deal of why exactly there had been some friction in their unity is difficult. Izuna is more than glad when finally they have said all there is to say for now and he is able to drag his brother off towards home.
Madara puts up a good act of wanting to stay and finish his work. He fools no one. Not even his workaholic tendencies are enough to keep him from spending a bit of quality time with his favorite sibling – although Izuna does notice the man tucking a few scrolls in to his sleeve before they depart. It gets him out the door, however, so no comments are made until finally they are making their way through the gate leading in to the Uchiha district.
“I can’t figure out his angle,” he blurts, too eager for another’s opinion to bother with context.
“Who, Hashirama?”
“No! Don’t be an idiot, that tree is as transparent as glass with his intentions. I mean his gods damned brother!”
Humming contemplatively, Madara pulls a bit of hair forward to fiddle with. “Wouldn’t having him forced to travel with you sort of negate the stalking? I know you didn’t want him along but I thought it would be nice for you to at least drag him out of the shadows.”
Rather tempted to pull at his own hair, Izuna takes several breaths and counts them before he is able to form a reply through the flash of temper.
Thankfully his brother has the good grace not to interrupt as he recounts everything that’s happened while he was away. His description of the way Tobirama seemed to constantly find his way between Izuna and his opponent during their battle brings a crease to Madara's brow that only deepens as the story goes on. Slowly making their way up one of the side streets, a shortcut towards their home, he tosses the chunk of hair he is playing with back over his shoulder only to grab another and start again.
“Strange,” he rumbles. “Very strange. I honestly have no idea what the hell this is all about.”
“I know that it’s ridiculous but I just need to hear someone else say this out loud: please tell me it’s not plausible that he’s actually fallen in love with me somehow.”
“Plausible, technically yes. Probable, a very strong no.”
“Oh thank the gods.” Izuna slumps with relief to finally have another confirm his thoughts.
After rolling his eyes Madara slips right back in to thoughtfulness. “There’s something about this that just doesn’t quite sit with me the right way. I know it would make the most sense to say that he still doesn’t trust you, that he’s been following you to keep a close watch or whatever, but for some reason I just can’t make myself believe that. There’s no other evidence of that in any other behavior.”
“Yes, thanks, I didn’t quite notice that for myself.”
“If that’s how you’re going to behave then I don’t see why you started talking about it! Go jabber at someone else if you’re just going to be all snooty about whatever I have to say!” With a sniff Madara turns up his nose and quickens his steps.
While Izuna isn’t entirely sure how he ends up being left alone outside he isn’t all that surprised either. The two of them share like tempers after all. Madara is as given to hissy fits as he himself can freely admit to being. He follows behind at a slower pace and lets himself in to the home they share, nodding at the shoes kicked off haphazardly at just the right spot where they might trip him up if he weren’t already expecting to see them there.
Madara is angrily plugging in their fancy new electric kettle when he enters the kitchen and slumps down in to the closest chair, blowing out his fringe with exasperation.
“Done being a baby?” he asks bluntly. Madara crinkles his nose.
“Fuck you.”
“You’re still thinking about it. I can practically see the gears turning in your head.”
His brother pauses in the act of pulling down two cups with the continuing thoughts he doesn’t bother to deny spilling out over his face. “Obviously I am. I keep trying to think of some other reason he might be doing this but nothing comes to mind. If it’s not that he doesn’t trust you and it’s not that he has some sort of romantic whatever–”
“Kami please no,” Izuna interrupts with a shudder.
“–then he clearly has some other special interest in you but I am honestly stumped. If it were almost anyone else I might go so far as jealousy except the two of you have always been so closely matched that I can’t see either being jealous of the other.” Madara jolts himself in to movement again, reaching for the tea leaves, but continues speaking even as he measures them out. “I would have considered that he was trying to learn something specific about you too but for the fact that he hasn’t been shy about asking for any other information he’s wanted on our clan.”
“Which is a lot of information, actually.”
“Hm. I guess. No more than we’ve asked from the others, though, and nothing that he’s asked for has been any more suspicious or invasive than the things we’ve asked about the Senju in turn.”
Izuna rattles his nails against the hardwood table. “Do you think that could be it? Maybe there’s something he wants to find out but it’s inappropriate or he knows we won’t want to share whatever information he’s after.”
He waits with as much patience as he can muster while the other tosses that idea around but even as he speaks the words Izuna himself realizes that probably isn’t it either. Tobirama might be a sneaky bastard on the battlefield and more than capable of subterfuge when it’s necessary during a mission but in daily life he has shown himself to prefer as direct a route as possible to whatever goal he has in his sights. Finally Madara pushes both teacups towards the kettle and leaves it to boil as he comes over to sit at the table.
“No,” his brother says. “That just doesn’t sound right either. And the worst part is that I can’t say why it doesn’t sound right. It feels like there’s something nagging at the back of my brain, something important that I’ve forgotten. Like a missing piece of the puzzle.”
“Would your friend know anything do you think?”
Madara blinks. “Hashirama? He might. It would be worth asking if he’s got any idea what crawled up his brother’s ass.”
“Aren’t you supposed to be going over to their house for dinner tomorrow night?” Izuna rattles his fingers again but this time it is less with frustration and more to express the satisfaction of the stars aligning just for him. He is further pleased to see his sibling lean back with widening eyes.
“I am going to dinner, yes. He asked me over because both Tobirama and Mito are supposed to be busy and he wanted company. We’ll be all alone.”
“You couldn’t wish for a better opportunity to ask a few questions,” Izuna purrs with satisfaction.
When the kettle begins to whistle they turn the conversation towards other things. Spending time together after being apart – even if for so short a time – is only one of the ways they maintain such a tight bond between them. Even here in another home the shadows of the siblings they have lost echo around every corner, chased away only by the warmth of knowing that Madara will always stand beside him against whatever the world might choose to throw at them.
After a while, however, he finds other thoughts wriggling in, thoughts that Izuna knows he is above and yet he can’t seem to push them away without addressing them. Tracing the rim of his nearly empty cup gives him something else to look at as he fills the lull that has fallen naturally in their conversation.
“Can I ask you something?” He waits for the curious grunt before going on. “Why don’t you seem more worried about this whole Tobirama situation?”
“What do you mean?”
“If there was someone following you around all the time I think I’d be a lot more freaked out about it than you seem to be. Not that I’m angry or making any accusations! It’s just…odd. You’re usually so overprotective it’s hard for me to even flirt with anyone.”
“Hn.” Madara bunches his brows together as though mildly offended by the insinuation that he might not care. “I guess I just don’t feel any ill intentions from him. Something in my gut tells me that he hasn’t got anything bad up his sleeve. The way he interacts with you – hell, the way he interacts with all the rest of our clan – I just can’t bring myself to believe that he’s after anything terrible. I guess I was just unconsciously acknowledging that I don’t believe you’re in any sort of danger.”
Somehow that only increases the dread pooling in Izuna’s gut.
“If he doesn’t have any bad intentions then the kami only know what else he could have in that twisted brain of his. Ancestors watch over me.”
While his brother snorts and gently teases him for being so dramatic Izuna lets the words drift by him without actually listening. The entire reason he’s been wanting to go out on a mission is to get away from this situation with his old rival and just clear his mind a bit. Now that he’s been denied that opportunity and come home only more confused in the aftermath he realizes more than ever that he needs a night to just relax, to let everything else fade away until his mind is empty of all worries. And what better way to achieve that then a night on the town with someone he can trust to be entirely disinterested in whatever drama he’s gotten himself embroiled in this time?
“You gonna be okay on your own tonight?” he cuts in through whatever the other is saying. “I think I’ll go see if I can drag Hikaku down to one of the taverns for a few hours.”
“Don’t you have work to catch up on tomorrow?” Madara asks.
“I’m not going to get drunk or anything, don’t worry, I’m not that stupid. Just thought it would be nice to unwind for a while.”
Even as he nods understandingly Madara puts one hand to his chest and exclaims in dramatic fashion, “Because you’re just so stressed with all the work you do, of course. Helping to run a village, keeping both eyes on a walking tree, achieving your lifelong dreams. Oh no wait, that’s me.”
“Fuck off,” Izuna calls cheerfully over his shoulder as he makes his way out of the room, deliberately leaving the teacup behind for the other to clean up after him. Pettiness is just another family trait.
With any luck Hikaku will be as willing to indulge him as his aniki is. Izuna reaches back to pull the tie from his hair and run his fingers through it. Perhaps a bath is in order first to wash the dirt of the road away, he probably still smells like the rivers they’ve been trudging through. Unpacking can wait for tomorrow. If his cousin doesn’t want to come out then he fully intends to bully his way in to the other man’s home and find something there to help him get his mind off of things. Tobirama can remain a problem for another day just once more.
Tomorrow his brother will speak with Hashirama and ask their questions. Tomorrow, he hopes, they will have answers.

world ripped to shreds
Whumptober Prompt 2: Explosion
(AO3)
Later, Dick will wonder where he went wrong and what he could’ve done differently in that split second between success and disaster. Because one moment, the guy is cornered and Dick is reaching for zip-ties, already thinking about how fun it will be to rub it in Bruce’s face that Dick caught Bruce’s guy. That will never happen though, because in the next moment, the guy throws something at Dick that wraps itself around his lower left arm.
It flashes red and starts beeping upon contact. The guy rushes past him, now wearing a completely different shade of panic from the one he wore when Dick had him cornered.
Everything feels distant as the realization of what’s about to happen hits him. He reaches up to press his comm, voice methodical as he says, “Medical assist. Explosive.”
“Nightwing, get out of there. Now,” Bruce growls after a moment, somehow deducing that Dick hasn’t been hurt yet.
“Can’t. It’s on my arm.” The beeping is getting faster, and he knows he should be trying to get it off or at least protect himself as best he can, but he’s completely frozen, unable to look away from the flashing red light.
Bruce sucks in a sharp breath, then orders, “Move your arm as far away from your body as you can. Protect your head. I’m on my way.”
Dick does as he’s told, Bruce’s voice somehow able to rise above the beeping and override Dick’s panic. At least for a moment. “I love you B. And thanks—for everything.”
“Don’t. You are going to be fine. Do you understand me?”
The beeping cuts short—everything is heat and light and noise and pain as Dick’s world is ripped to shreds. The explosion leaves him with nothing and all he can do is scream.
oOo
A desperate hand brushing against his cheek, promises and words of comfort he can’t quite make out, heavy pressure that won’t go away despite his choked pleading, blood flooding all of his senses, eyes begging—telling—him to hold on just a little longer, the longing for a hand to latch on to. These are the things he remembers; these are the things that will make up his nightmares from that night.
For now, though, he wakes up to that muffled beeping and this all-consuming pain. It’s too much, and every part of him is screaming at him to run and get out but he can’t because he’s stuck. And where’s Bruce? He promised he would be here, he promised—
“Shh, easy, kiddo. You’re alright, you’re safe.” The hand he’s been needing finally appears, gripping Dick’s tightly in its own and promising to never let go.
“Hurts,” he manages, turning his head to find Bruce’s face. His jaw is set and there’s a sadness in his eyes. A helplessness.
“I know.” For some reason, Bruce is even harder to hear now that Dick’s facing him. “We’re trying to get it under control, but your injuries are severe.”
The pain is all over—in his side, in his head—but the loudest part is coming from his left arm. He tugs his right hand out of Bruce’s grip to examine it, already having an idea of what he’ll find. He pulls the sheet down and finds maybe a quarter of his arm still in-tact and heavily bandaged. Fuck. “He blew my fucking arm off.”
“Yes.” Bruce just runs his hand through Dick’s hair, letting the but it could’ve been so much worse, I could’ve lost you go unsaid.
“I thought,” Dick swallows past the lump in his throat, “I thought I was gonna die.” He was sure of it.
“You didn’t.” I got to you in time, you’re fine, just like I said.
Before Dick can say anything else—about the arm, about how he cheated death—the pain spikes and all he can manage is a shuttering breath as he grits his teeth. He reaches for Bruce’s hand again, gripping it tight enough to leave marks. Dick pushes his head into the pillow and squeezes his eyes shut, using all of his self-control to prevent himself from whimpering. “Fuck, Bruce, it really hurts.” Make it stop, make it stop.
Bruce rubs his thumb back and forth across Dick’s knuckles reassuringly, and from the way it tugs on Dick’s hand, he assumes Bruce stands up. The spike of pain falls back down to baseline soon enough, but baseline is still too high. He hears Bruce speak up again, but he can’t make out what he’s saying at all. “What?” he asks, opening his eyes and turning his head just enough to expose his right ear.
Bruce is frowning, but he repeats what he says anyway—louder than he had been speaking before, too. “I’ve increased the flow rate on your pain medication. It should start helping soon.”
“Okay.” He focuses on a spot past Bruce on the far wall and tries to breathe in: one two three, out: one two three, in: one two thee, out: one two—
Bruce taps his shoulder after a few minutes pass and the monitors have calmed down considerably, but it’s not until Dick looks at him that Bruce asks, “Do you think you could try some water?”
“Sure.” He hadn’t noticed how dry his throat was. He wonders if it’s just from being intubated for surgery or if he’s been out a long time. He doesn’t feel like asking.
“Don’t try to sit up; you’ll agitate the burns,” Bruce warns. When he hums in understanding, Bruce grabs a cup of water, drops a straw in it, and holds it up for Dick, who sips at it eagerly. He drinks about half of it before Bruce pulls it away, promising, “You can have more after you keep it down for a few minutes.”
The pain meds have started to kick in and all he wants to do is go back to sleep, but he has a question to ask first: “Is the hearing loss permanent?”
“Possibly.” Bruce shifts in his seat. “Both eardrums were ruptured, but there was damage to some of the bones in the left ear.”
. . . And considering that Dick can’t seem to hear anything with that ear, the “possibly” is really a probably.
“We’ll do a hearing test in a few days when you’re up to it.”
“Sure.” Dick can’t wait to see the cover story Bruce comes up with for this one. Not many things can simultaneously cause someone to lose half of their arms and half of their hearing.
(Tears threaten to build up in Dick’s eyes; he blinks them away silently as if they had never been there. Bruce notices anyway.)
“Get some sleep, Dick. We can discuss these things later.”
Bruce means when he’s not exhausted, in pain, and on heavy medication. But that won’t be for a few weeks, and by that point, Dick will be able to pretend he’s okay. No, they won’t talk about this properly until he breaks down in the middle of the night months later. That’s how things usually go.
“How am I supposed to do anything like this?” Dick asks, voice wet and angry and low. “How am I supposed to be Nightwing?”
“If Nightwing is something you still want, we will find a way to make it work,” Bruce tells him firmly. “It will be different and it will take time, but you have always managed to get what you’ve worked for, and this time won’t be any different.”
Dick takes a shaky breath, eyes glued to the ceiling when the tears finally spill over. “You think?”
“I am certain of it.” Bruce cups Dick’s damp cheek with his hand—that same desperate hand that had begged Dick to tell him that he wasn’t too late—and forces Dick to look him in the eye. “You are going to be fine. Do you understand me?”
“Yes.” With Bruce around, there’s no other option.
“Get some rest,” Bruce tries again.
“You’ll stay with me?”
Bruce brushes Dick’s hair back and presses a kiss to his forehead. “Of course.”
Dick stops fighting against the exhaustion and closes his eyes, falling asleep the same way he woke up: quickly and with Bruce by his side. He dreams of explosions and being on the brink of death, but as long as Bruce is still there ready to calm him down when he wakes up, he’ll be fine. Permanent repercussions and all.

Mercedes: … Ferdinand: Oh, Mercedes. This is unexpected. M: Hello, Ferdinand. Did you come to pray? F: I did. I quite like the atmosphere in the cathedral. F: It is holy and solemn. Perfectly suited to a noble, wouldn't you say? M: Uhh... I guess so. F: You guess so? I think the matter is rather clear-cut. F: It is incumbent upon nobles that we pray regularly to the goddess. F: Even Edelgard, who opposes the church's methods, does not deny us the right to pray to the goddess. F: The piety of the nobles is a model for commoners— it teaches them the value of devotion. M: Absolutely. I know exactly what you mean. I couldn't agree more. F: These days many nobles scarcely, if ever, pray. F: Look around! You and I are alone in this cathedral. It is really quite a shame. M: Ah, well, I don't really know that I count as a noble anyway. F: I am afraid the nobility seems to be losing its way. When you pray, you are usually alone, right? M: Umm…yes. You're right. I usually am. F: Precisely. Where are the others? Of course, you cannot force people to worship. That is out of the question. F: Nobles must determine for themselves what they will believe and how they will pray. F: A religion foisted on you without your say is not much of a religion at all. Do you not agree? M: Yes, I definitely agree. Definitely...agree. F: On the other hand, we cannot stand idly by while... M: Um, it was great talking to you, but I'm getting pretty sleepy. I'm going to head off to bed. Good night! F: All in all, one has to conclude... Mercedes? Where did she go? F: I must have inspired her to go out and revive the faith! Perhaps I should do the same. I cannot let her show me up...
——————————————————————————————
b (i?)
NPC: Come on! Sell it to me! M: Huh? What's going on here? M: Hey! Stop that! Can't you see he's not interested? NPC: We’re just talking business here. Now move it along. M: Oh! I just thought it looked a little... M: Actually, now I'm curious. M: What kind of business are you conducting? M: I’ve been told I have a keen eye for appraisal. NPC: Just trying to buy a sword... NPC: I told him to name his price, but he won't give it up! M: Any price? You must be able to afford anything your heart desires! M: But did you consider that he might have a good reason not to sell it? M: Maybe it's a family heirloom. Or simply his favorite sword. NPC: No one asked for your appraisal! Now move it! Or are you looking for trouble? F: That is quite enough! F: You would dare threaten a woman? I will not permit such ungentlemanly conduct. M: Oh. Hello, Ferdinand. Do you have an opinion on all this? F: Behind me, milady! I will protect you! NPC: Who are you? You looking for trouble too? NPC: Keep your distance, gutless knave! I just cleaned my sword, and if I maim you I will have to clean it again. NPC: Neither of us wants that, so I suggest you leave at once. NPC: Gah! Forget it! You're not worth my time! M: Ah, thank you so much... You saved me there. F: Well, that is taken care of. Are you hurt, Mercedes? M: Hurt? No, I'm fine. We were only talking. F: Ah, I am glad! I do not abide uncouth behavior. Stopping it is my duty as a noble!
——————————————————————————————
b (ii?)
F: You know, stepping in to prevent extortion, that was quite brave of you. M: What? Oh, you're talking about that time in town. I wouldn't say I did anything brave, really. I just asked what was going on. F: No need to be humble. Helping the weak is precisely what a virtuous noble does. M: I…I don't think what I did is quite the same thing. F: What do you mean by that? M: The point I was trying to make is that some things in this world can't be bought or sold with money. M: I think I let myself get a little too worked up though. M: It’s just... When I saw it happening, it reminded me of my own past... F: Your past. Hm. F: You were originally a daughter of House Bartels, a minor noble family, I heard. F: You abandoned your title, and now you live as a commoner. F: Is there more to the story? Pray tell. M: Life was becoming...difficult for us, so my mother and I fled from House Bartels. M: We found refuge in a small church in Faerghus and lived there for a few years. M: A man appeared one day and said that he wanted to adopt me. M: It was obvious that he only cared about my bloodline and Crest. M: The priest refused to let me go, but the man used his money to overwhelm the church. In the end, I had no choice but to leave with him. M: That soldier we saw... I guess he just reminded me of my adoptive father. F: The man who exploited you so that he could join the nobility. Yes, I understand. F: But I must confess, that part of the story confuses me. There is nothing to gain from having a noble title. M: Hehe. F: What's so funny? M: I never thought I'd hear you question the value of nobility, Ferdinand. F: Oh, well... That is not quite what I meant. F: Using someone else to obtain high status, with no effort and no accomplishment... F: Certainly, you can obtain a title like that, but it hardly makes you a noble. M: I completely agree. F: By the same token, although you are legally a commoner, in your heart you are a proud and virtuous noble! F: That is what I think, at any rate.
——————————————————————————————
a
F: Mercedes, finally! There you are. M: Ah! Ferdinand! Why are you so short of breath? F: I just wanted to show you something. M: What’s this... Um... Oh! F: Yes. These are financial records that I recovered from your adoptive father. F: They prove that when he adopted you, large sums of money changed hands. M: Where did you come across these? F: I went to Fhirdiad, found his estate, and stealthily made my way inside. It was easy. (blue lions route?) F: I stealthily made my way into Fhirdiad and looked around his estate. It was easy. (others?) F: That kind of thing is no trouble for an intrepid young noble such as myself. M: That’s amazing! I mean...amazingly irresponsible! M: I can't believe you put yourself at risk for my benefit. I really wish you wouldn't do such things! F: No, I did it for my benefit. I could not help myself. F: With these documents, we can show everyone what a scoundrel your adoptive father really is. F: His noble aspirations will be crushed. The lord of the region will probably rescind his adoption contract. F: In other words, you will be free. F: Here, take them. Do with them what you will. M: Do you really believe these will set me free? F: Yes. Of course. F: You will be free to decide your own path in life, and go wherever your heart leads you. M: That does sound nice...but... M: I’m sorry, Ferdinand, but I think you should hold on to the documents. F: Why? Is this not what you want? M: I’ve lived so much of my life following everyone else's lead... M: So much so that I've come to terms with it. It's almost unavoidable at this point. M: But with these...I could regain my freedom and change all that. F: You baffle me. Do you not wish to be free? M: Of course I do. Let me try that again in a way you might understand. M: Ahem. A true noble cuts their own path, seizing freedom from the clutches of tyranny! F: I cannot argue with that. Fine, then. I will hold on to the documents. M: But I'm really very happy that you're so concerned with my well-being, Ferdinand. M: It means so much to me that you went through all that trouble on my behalf. F: Of course, Mercedes. The smile on your face is well worth the effort.

After the war, Mercedes traveled to Fhirdiad to pay a visit to her adoptive father. Though she introduced Ferdinand, she left out the small detail that they were engaged to be wed. Married in secret, Ferdinand and Mercedes worked together to reform the new Duke Aegir's territory, and the effort was so successful that Emperor Edelgard named Ferdinand her prime minister. It was a busy life for him indeed, but as he was known to say to his government colleagues, coming home to a smiling family made all the hard work worth it. (black eagles route)

2/52 Hackle
Royal AU + Marriage of Convenience
So I may have gone a bit overboard, but now I’m into this idea.  Like a lot.
Princess Ada is the ruler of a small principality, Argutos.  Argutos is known for two things: its high literacy rate and agricultural production.  Ada is considered by her subjects to be a good ruler, one who has made it a priority to make herself available to her people.  She holds weekly open sessions at the palace during which any of her subjects may come forward to raise an issue.
Ada’s twin sister Agatha was banished from the kingdom ten years ago for her attempted coup against their mother, Princess Alma.  She fled to places unknown and their mother’s spies were never able to determine exactly where she’d settled.  Well, now she’s emerged as the leader of the Grand Duchy of Nocivis and Ada feels it is only a matter of time until she attacks Argutos.
Hecate is the sharp-tongued, bookish eldest daughter of King Jasper of Alaitasuna.  She has managed to run off most suitors, much to her relief and her father’s mounting frustration.  Her interest in being a political pawn for the furtherance of her father’s power is nil.  She is perfectly content to be left to her books and experiments.
Hecate stood before her father’s throne, chin tilted upward, shoulders back, and gaze steady.  Despite her outward calm, she could feel her heart hammering against her ribcage as she waited for her father’s lecture on how to behave toward suitors to end.
“Hecate, you are nearing 25.  Your duty is to marry well, and you will.  There will be no further discussion on the matter.”
She waited a moment before speaking, waiting for her father to truly look at her.  “I know well what is expected of me, Father.  I am far enough down the line of succession to know that I will be married off to the first suitor of any note who asks.  The first politically advantageous match will be made, and I have resigned myself to the reality that I will be little more than chattel.  But I refuse to be lectured on how to appeal to suitors.  It is immaterial and a waste of both our time.  I will not compromise myself for anyone.  Including you, Father.  Excuse me.”
Without waiting to be dismissed, Hecate left her father’s throne room and walked quickly back through the palace to her chambers.  She felt lighter, as if a weight had finally been lifted.  But the closer she got to her rooms, the harder the realization hit her that she had accomplished something.  She would not be complicit, she would not simply wilt away into subservience.
Ada needs to cement Argutos’s alliance with their more militarily powerful neighbor to the west, Alaitasuna.  She is not sure of the best way to go about it, feeling that the most obvious route may not be open to her.  Political marriages are the tried and true method of securing alliances with foreign powers.  Tucking that thought away as not worthy of real consideration, she focuses instead on strengthening trade ties.  Her visit to the Alaitasuna for the trade summit becomes her point of focus.
The visit of the Princess of Argutos is viewed as something of a coup by Hecate’s father.  Alaitasuna is incredibly mountainous and relies on agricultural trade with Argutos to feed its people.  Hecate is ambivalent about the visit at first.  It is a disruption to her current research projects.
At the official reception dinner upon her arrival, Ada is seated next to Princess Hecate.  While the initial conversation is difficult, Ada does eventually find they have a common interest in the works of Alaitasuni alchemist Itzal Mintxo.  The change in Hecate’s demeanor is immediate and Ada finds herself wanting to continue talking with the younger woman.  Intelligence and enthusiasm are magnetic and Ada can admit that she enjoys having a good conversation with someone who shares her interests.
The trade summit drags on for almost two weeks.  When they are not in meetings, Ada and Hecate are in Hecate’s chambers working on her latest scientific research project or walking in the gardens.  Though neither would consider the other anything more than a friendly acquaintance due to the recent nature of their meeting, they do get along.  Two days before she is set to return home to Argutos, Ada invites Hecate to join her on a walk through the palace gardens.
They walked side by side, the guards surrounding them on all sides doing their best to allow for privacy.  The only sound for several moments was the crunch of gravel under feet.  Ada looked around, observing the grounds.  They were quite lovely, the mountain view really quite something.  Argutos could not have been more different, with its miles and miles of rolling plains.  She would miss the view here, though she was more than prepared to return home.  But she couldn’t leave without offering Hecate something: the chance to leave on her own terms.
“Is something the matter?” Hecate asked, her brow furrowing slightly with worry.
Ada smiled over at her, laying a gentle hand on Hecate’s shoulder.  “Not at all.  I just had something of a proposition for you.”
“Oh?”
“I must warn you, it’s somewhat unconventional.”
“Now you’ve really piqued my interest.”
Taking a deep to steel her nerve, Ada said, “I know that your father wishes for you to marry.  I would like to offer myself as an option, should you agree.”  When she did not receive an immediate response beyond stunned silence, Ada plowed on.  “I would expect nothing of you, aside from your presence at official functions, and you would be free to continue your research.  I would never wish to constrain you.  I just–”
Hecate stopped walking and simply stared for a moment, her entire body stilling.  “You wish to marry me?”
Ada smoothed imaginary creases from her skirt, eyes everywhere but on Hecate’s face.  “I am proposing a mutually beneficial arrangement.  In the form of marriage.”
“What do you gain from this?”  Hecate’s hands twisted in front of her, the torsion and flexion a somewhat painful distraction from her mounting anxiety.
“A stronger alliance with Alaitasuna and military support in the event of foreign incursion.”
Silence stretched between them for several moments before Hecate took a deep breath and spoke.  “Is that a pressing concern?”
Ada offered no hesitation, staring Hecate directly in the eye as she answered.  “Yes.”
“I see.”
Ada took a few steps away before turning back to look at Hecate.  “I know the arrangement is probably suboptimal, but you would fulfill your father’s requirement that you marry and my home would be more secure.  I do not make this offer lightly, though I will feel no ill will should you say no.  I hope that we can be friends, Hecate.  You are a brilliant woman and I have enjoyed our time here together.  I just thou–”
“I accept your terms.”
Ada and Hecate are married several months later and Hecate comes to live in Argutos.  Ada builds Hecate her own lab in the palace and helps with experiments when her help is requested.  Hecate uses her experiments to help develop new treatments for blight and insects in Argutos’s staple crops.  Despite being very severe and taciturn in her official appearances, no one can say that she doesn’t care about the people of her new home.  When she volunteers to help treat patients during a rheumatic fever epidemic breaks out in the capital, she becomes something of a national hero.
Ada and Hecate have been married for ten years when Agatha finally attacks Argutos.  The ensuing conflict, which ends with Ada being forced to directly confront her sister and Hecate almost sacrificing herself in order to save Ada from harm, shows just how close the two have become.  Hecate is injured in the battle, which serves as the last motivation Ada needs in order to vanquish her sister for good.
As Hecate is healing from her injuries, Ada confesses that she has fallen in love with Hecate.  She remains a constant figure at Hecate’s bedside and over time Hecate is comfortable enough to admit the depth of her own feelings.  [“Hecate, I think you throwing yourself in front of my sister’s sword was enough to tell me how you felt.”  “No.  I would have done that for anyone honorable.”  “Really?”  “Hopefully you won’t have cause to find out.”]
Having freed the people of Nocivis from Agatha’s cruel reign, Ada and Hecate restore the rightful ruler to the throne, coincidentally a distant cousin of Ada’s, Mona.  A firm alliance is formed between the two states.  They rule for forty more years and bring about a new era of peace and prosperity.  They leave behind a legacy their heir, the young Grand Duchess Maud of Nocivis [the grandaughter of Mona], continues to build upon for years to come.
send me two tropes and a ship and I’ll tell you how I’d use them in a story

Top Betting Mistakes
Tumblr media
agensbobetterbesar The 1st step in order to formulating any solution, is to establish the problem.
The pursuing points tend to be areas connected with betting where a lot of punters often get it completely wrong. My views arise by long personal experience as well as years of communication having productive and unsuccessful punters likewise.
agensbobetterbesar
My aim below is to spotlight these frequent areas of inability with the hope that My spouse and i can certainly speed up your personal learning contour towards profitable betting.
Browse the following feelings and you may manage to side step many associated with the ditches or road-gashes others get fallen directly into in typically the past.
1) Failure to utilize Betting Banks
Most bettors fail to understand in which the best method regarding achieving a healthy and also continual long term income from racing is always to fixed aside a sum involving money far from your major finances, solely for that wagering of horses. No matter what process or system you happen to be making use of, whoever you are adhering to or subscribing to or maybe however your own wagers are usually calculated, you are generally better off using a "Betting Bank" that has developed -in advantages that may help an individual. It demands to be independent from your personal finances and desires to get protected from elements that will threaten it. This specific can require a lot connected with emotion out of often the organizational proficiency process. Emotion is actually a aspect that is set out all punters. The sizing of your betting lender will of course possibly be based upon your own personal circumstances along with free cash available.
A great analogy to be able to the world of stock shares maybe may be this no economic advisor well worth his deserving of would suggest you throw your entire funds into the stock industry only. The vast the greater part of punters fail for you to employ any form associated with set aside traditional bank. That they bet randomly with the information ever before money they have inside their pocket at the ending of the few days as well as go in too strong with stakes far more than their personal safety ranges. A punter with some sort of specialist attitude will placed aside just what he can easily comfortably afford to take a position in addition to then determine the very best work with he can help to make of that permanent total of capital. With a new predetermined sum of money available at this point you move with to the next purpose for malfunction.
2) Disappointment to Pole Correctly
The idea is vital that anyone consider carefully your betting bank because given in amount. Anyone do not have great pool of resources to help dip into. Betting by simply its nature carries built in risks. These risks contain periods of low reach rates and long burning off runs. Your betting standard bank and staking should become designed for the procedure you use. You need to within advance, prepare yourself with regard to the risk of a more serious than regular sequence regarding losers by way of adoption involving a sufficient quantity of products in your betting financial institution. Correct methodical staking as well as the mathematical advantage, can likewise aid overcome the threat of emotional defense mechanism the sequence of extraordinarily optimistic or negative effects. Consider the Pricewise column inside racing post as a example.
Lasting if you actually could get on on the advised prices, it would likely include returned a reasonable profit all round. During this kind of time however followers must have endured runs up to 40 losers in any strip! Despite the entire long term earnings My partner and i suspect the vast the vast majority of Pricewise followers will have been over both by a failure to put aside a sufficient sum of points or even by failure to cope along with the actual emotion of the particular losing work. We possess long since recognized the following a strike charge connected with about 35% on the Best option selections and with an average T. L. of over 5/2 regarding each winning bet.
We all feel able to guard clientele banks as longer losing works haven't took place and the punch price and odds are already far more than enough to guarantee long stable and risk-free growth to your betting income. That is basically typically the key to winning funds. Manage your accounts in a fashion that protects them as significantly as achievable from often the element of risk the fact that game presents you.
3) Chasing Losses
Chasing cutbacks at first sight could appear to be a good way to guarantee an final benefit but the genuine story can it be is some sort of game for fools as well as statistically will not perform unless you generate the overall stakes profit. Running after losses is actually a game intended for the ill knowledgeable who also do not want in order to make your time and effort to seek out value in their gamble. Bookmakers have to cost way up every race. Punters need not play in every single race, they could pick the actual races they want to be able to side bet in, and which is the main border that people fail for you to understand.
In case you have had a new losing morning, by seeking to chasing your own deficits you give up that will advantage and bet within the races that you must not be gambling inside. You are therefore bets the way bookmakers need one to and not throughout the way to earn. Many punters will modify their stakes in the particular last competition either to help "chase" loss or "play up" profits. Its zero coincidence that this bookmakers have got ensured the last contest on each time will be often a handicap or perhaps one of many hardest races in which day time. There will end up being more racing the very next day and also the day after this.
The trick is waiting to get opportunities and they only betting while you know you will have situations which favour a person along with not the bookmakers. You must not change your approach, or maybe deviate from sensible staking since there is not any such things as "The Previous Race".
4) Shortage of Price Appreciation
Understanding of "value" in the bet is key in order to long term success. To be able to profit over a lengthy group of bets you need to be bet at probabilities greater than the actual probability of winning your variety have. To do that however within the long period, you need to completely focus on each and every race independently and find the benefit bet in that ethnic background. There is value to be able to be had in each and every battle. The key to the idea is usually understanding where which price is. Many periods a punter will bolt up a getting rid of wagering slip and point out "At least I had several value".
There is totally NO relationship in between valuation and prices. A 33/1 chance may be diabolical worth yet a extremely short charged favorite might be supreme benefit. The item does not follow that will the greater the selling price you take the a great deal better "value" you have. The particular value might be clear nevertheless more often properly invisible and it takes any educated eye to observe that. All people have this "Foresight" on situations, it is definitely a game about thoughts after all and no person is always correct or incorrect. Valuation can be the many expensive phrase in sporting if you can't wager winner. The old but well-known phrase is the fact value is with regards to betting some sort of horse whoever true likelihood is considerably better than its price demonstrates.
That's only a smaller a part of it. You in addition have to make positive that without a doubt in typically the right way and with the right contests while that is the simply approach you can retain strike costs high in addition to protect a new betting lender. You should constantly make an effort to increase value inside your bets. Once you get a selection you really feel is actually value do not merely take first acceptable price tag in which comes along. Search for to improve the item by means of shopping around the different terme conseillé or try as well as top the most effective bookmakers value by looking for the gambling exchanges. Marginal advancements upon odds on each guess you make can include a remarkable effect in long term profits.
5) Greed For Instant Riches
Many punters seek the excitment of a life transforming bet that may produce large gains associated with instant riches for a modest pay out. Bookmakers play on your current natural desire and will do anything to encourage you for you to think exotic multiple collection proposition wagers that can within one hit, convert the small stake into any huge sum. Professionals on the other hand hardly ever bet in diversifiés. Many professionals bet unmarried people and also steer away through the many bets. Terme conseillé relentlessly advertise a web host of multiple bets together with exotic names such seeing that Yankee, Lucky 15, along with Goliath.
The reason they will are heavily recommended will be the profit margin inside the bookmaker's favour increases often the considerably more selections you put to your several side bet. Say you select virtually any random 5/1 selection. When you bet this as some sort of one the bookmaker may possibly have a new theoretical borders in his favour regarding 15%. Taking a couple of these kinds of selections however in addition to bets them in a gain two times, the bookmakers revenue perimeter rises to in relation to thirty! Yes your get increase can produce the much bigger succeed coming from the same stake even so over the long name the terme conseillé is ingesting away in your capital on a much faster level.
It is a waste material of time debating which sort of multiple bet is usually 'best'. Unless your auguration skills are supernatural or perhaps you are incredibly lucky, and then bet in singles is definitely more the best alternative. You may say this quite a few "Pros, " carry out wager in multiples inside table bets like The Information 6 or maybe the Jackpot, although that's due to the fact they realize there is a lot of "Dead" money in any offered Pool area and they usually are betting against people that may understand the dynamics of the people types of bet. Presently there are times you ought to guess in multiples but also in fact they are few as well as far between.
You may not method this as a "Get Rich Quick " plan. It is a very long slow means of serious and also sustained income and certainly not a game for Acquire Rich Quick schemers. In the event you go Into any Gambling go shopping, have a seem at all the cards around the wall offering "special offers", "enhanced terms inches along with "bonus offers". You actually will see all of them are numerous bets. Bookmakers wish an individual betting in many in addition to it is easy to help see why. Many people mill most profit from these. You never see any Bookmakers advertising offering extra's on a earn as well as each way sole. Inquire yourself why.

Self-insert stuff and video game design pontification below the cut.
Its always cool to make jrpg boss fights right? I don’t often do self-inserts for that sort of thing, but it’s a neat question. What kind of boss fight would I be?
Probably a gimmicky one. As a character, I’d likely not be a beatstick enemy; more likely one you see being dastardly in cutscenes inbetween major story beats, and at the end of Acts. The standard tool kit of bastard tricksters including stuff like illusions, scrying, shapeshifting, teleportation, etc. All the fire emblem villain cutscene powers used to taunt blue-haired sword-Lords since time primordial.
I would still have a boss fight though, or rather, two. The one where I stall or distract you while something really bad is happening, and the one where you finally get to kill me.
The one where you fight me is a gimmicky Level/Game Knowledge test. There’s me, and two artillery type enemies on the other end of the battlefield launching splash damage attacks into the melee. They hurt me very little, but do heavier damage to you. As long as I’m on the field, there’s a barrier preventing you from getting to them. I’m dodge tanking and debugging and buff clearing (many of which have echo effects) your party according to a series of if-then patterns, where the only rng is the ability success rates. My patterns are very learnable, which is in fact the goal. When I take a certain amount of damage from friendly fire I retreat for a few turns to heal; otherwise, my evasion is too high for you to hit me. The ‘encouraged’ way to win the fight is to learn and adapt to my patterns, baiting out all my longer term removals and debuffs, so they’ll wear off by the time I leave to heal before they come off cooldown and I cast them again. You have to bait them out with your own attack buffs, but retain enough mana (and manage your cooldowns/charges and consumables) to be able to get to and burst down the artillery pieces as much as possible before I return and knock you all back to the main combat area for some more turns of debuffing and dodge-tanking. It’s entirely possible to win the fight while being under leveled if you knowledge of the game is good enough, and in fact the game has a fairly intuitive system display for such things.
This fight is not supposed to make you have to go to the wiki, but instead act as the “second tutorial”. The one in the early game taught you how to use buffs and debuffs, this fight checks if you actually bothered to maintain them, or if you had the patience to level grind to the point of winning by attrition. Both methods are valid, and the game saves in two different slots both before you head into the mission and after all the dialogue, so you’ll always be able to repeatedly retry the fight without sitting through the cutscenes, or decide you just want to level grind some more instead.
This is a logistics battle at core though, and the atmosphere reflects that. The music isn’t a thumping battle-tune, but instead sounds like tune the plays as the theft occurs like well oiled-machine in a heist movie like Oceans 8. It’s not a battle, it’s a chess match of positioning, timing, and baiting.
The one where you kill me, however, is depressingly anti-climatic. You corner me at last, a truly epic boss track kicks in (likely in some sort of jazzy style), and the battle-start blur happens. The fight opens and I get the first turn. I immediately perform a ridiculous barrage of buffs and debuffs far beyond the number of actions I should get in a single turn, many of which were player-exclusive up till now. I say something stoic, dry, and cool about not being the sort of trickster that has to flee at the first sign of trouble, then the turn passes to you. You send your tank up to take a swing at me...
And I die in one hit, crumpling to the ground. I mutter something like “Oh. All that, and I forgot to unequip it.” The fight ends immediately. The entire party levels up. The only loot I drop is a unique slot less item, the Vizier’s Badge. It grants 99% damage resistance to attacks from anyone who is or was your ally within the last week, but 1000% vulnerability to damage from all other sources.
