If I had a nickel for every time Olivia Cooke played a character named ‘Emma’ who lives in Seattle, has a British parent that keeps in contact, and a husband with a past involving recreational substances, I’d have two nickels. Which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird that it’s happened twice.

Wendy grimaced, smoking her cigarette, and went to delete the message but accidentally dropped her phone on the sidewalk with a quiet clattering on the ice.
She bent down and heard: “… my prayers every night since you informed me on my answering machine, dearest Wendy. I have been thinking about you. And wishing God’s angels may surround you and bless you. I know you are loved, Wendy. You are welcome in my home at any time …”
Wendy stayed kneeling on the sidewalk, staring at her phone, wind blowing her scarf around, the horizontal sun lighting her against the snow bank by the parking lot.
-Little Fish by Casey Plett
This tiny moment when Wendy accidentally listens to the rest of Anna's voicemail really struck me. Something about getting comfort from a source you already dismissed... even if it's not exactly what you need. Even if a few weeks later everything is different, in this moment, there is relief. This is how we cope, as trans people, taking what succor we can wherever we find it. It may never outweigh the fear and violence in total, but nevertheless these are the moments that can save us if we let them.

Little Fish by Casey Plett
Tumblr media
When thirty-year-old trans woman Wendy Reimer comes across evidence that her late grandfather—a devout Mennonite farmer—might have been transgender himself, she dismisses this revelation, having other problems at hand. But as she and her friends struggle to cope with their increasingly volatile lives—which range from alcoholism, to sex work, to suicide—Wendy grows increasingly drawn to the lost pieces of her grandfather’s life, becoming determined to unravel the mystery of his truth.
Alternately warm-hearted and dark-spirited, desperate and mirthful, Little Fish explores the winter of discontent in the life of one transgender woman as her past and future become irrevocably entwined.
