WIP Wednesday

Listen. Listen. Listen (can you hear the soft chime of excuses approaching?), I DID NOT mean to start another WIP. But lately every time someone leaves me a comment on Down By The Water it makes me DESPERATE to get back to that universe. I love it so, so much, but I didn't have any actual story ideas to go with that feeling. Then suddenly an idea presented itself and here we are.

It's a follow-up, set between chap 12 and the epilogue (though I'm hoping to also include a flashback to the early days of their relationship, all the way back to that first holiday). All soft, domestic feels, no angst. It may even remain a T, that's how soft this is.

The house is quiet when Alex walks in, which is completely unexpected. This has not been the case even once over the weeks since he went back to work. He drops his work bag on the table by the front door, and the two heavy shopping bags on top of the kitchen table, then goes out in search of his family. He finds them in the bedroom: Henry, lying on his side on top of the duvet, still wearing the same pyjamas he had on when Alex left the apartment that morning; his index finger clutched loosely in baby Tom’s unbelievably tiny hand. The baby is cosy is in his white sleeping bag with the beagle print, also lying on his side, facing Henry. They’re both fast asleep, breathing softly, and there’s a pillow barrier behind Tom to make sure he doesn’t roll off the bed, even though he’s far, far away from the edge of the bed, even though at all of four weeks old rolling over is a skill he has yet to acquire. They look so peaceful, Alex wants to cry, his chest tight with an amount of love he hadn't known was possible. He pulls his phone out and flicks it to silent to make sure it doesn’t wake them up when he takes a picture, then walks out of the bedroom, shutting the door behind himself, and makes his way back to the kitchen.

I fucking love them as dads.

Technically Harvey’s first solo album after the break-up of the PJ Harvey Trio, the album was the artist’s commercial breakthrough. Welcomed with widespread critical acclaim, the album included the single “Down by the Water” which received heavy rotation on radio and MTV and helped propel the album to no. 12 on the UK charts and no. 40 in the US. Chosen as album of the year by the Village Voice, Rolling Stone, the New York Times, People, USA Today, and the Los Angeles Times, and nominated for two Grammy awards and the Mercury Prize, To Bring You My Love is widely regarded among the best albums of the 90s.
