Been doing a lot of reading but not a lot (none 🤷🏾‍♀️) of posting. But I just finished #AnAmericanMarriage by Tayari Jones and Lord do I wish I had a book club to discuss this with. Wheeeewwww. Whew. Maya: “I started An American Marriage today and got it at the new McNally Jackson. I only buy from local booksellers. The story is about a young, married, Black couple. They are starry-eyed but know it will get complicated as time goes on. A year into the marriage the husband is accused of rape and is sentenced to 12 years in jail. It completely throws off the trajectory of their marriage and the story unfolds from there. I just went through a big breakup. We were fully in love for a year and in the last two months it just fell apart. Now all that’s left is his ghost. He existed and now he doesn’t at all. He may as well have been a character in a book. The story is done and there won’t be a sequel. Maybe that’s why I’ve been on a major book consuming spree. I just finished Green yesterday —it’s by this Brooklyn author. I emailed him and he got back to me right away. I email authors every time I love their story and feel connected to them—I send a little love note. Acknowledgment and appreciation is everything. Provavelmente você já deve ter visto tanto comentários positivos, quanto negativos desse livro, pois este foi um dos lançamentos de 2019 que mais dividiu opiniões e, obviamente, quis ler para poder ter a minha própria. Após minha leitura consegui entender, perfeitamente, porque o livro dividiu opinião e acho que foi por isso que fiquei "em cima do muro", ou seja, nem cheguei a amar e nem desgostei do livro. Vamos acompanhar a história comovente de Roy e Celestial, que i felizmente estão no lugar erra e na hora errado, motivo que faz com Roy seja acusado de ter estuprado uma mulher e, ao ser julgado, é injustamente condenado a 12 anos de prisão. Só fazia um ano e meio que eles estavam casados e as consequências dessa condenação vai pesar nesse relacionamento. Nem mesmo o fato de Roy ter conseguido sair da prisão após 5 anos fará minimizar o fato de que ele e a esposa passaram mais tempo de casado separados do que juntos. O problema é que estar livre não muda o fato de que a vida "do lado de fora" continuou e que Roy viu seu casamento, carreira e sonhos serem destruídos pela incompetência da justiça e racismo nos EUA. Sem dúvida alguma o volume mexe com nossos sentimentos e coloca em xeque vários temas que urgem reflexão, além disso tem uma linguagem poética que torna a narrativa ainda mais emotiva e sensível. Mesmo assim, ainda vi a narrativa ter seus altos e baixos, porque tinha momentos que achava meio arrastada, com relatos desnecessários e faltando informações em outros pontos.
