I figured I should try to go out with at least one jam session, after so long of silence. And I got a few new toys. I'm only showing half of the new toys in this one, since I haven't had a chance to really get to play with the other two much yet. The new effects pedal is great, but unfortunately the decade-plus old laptop that's running OBS and the super cheap camera attached to it aren't exactly up to snuff, so there are a few audio and visual glitches in this one. Which kind of fits the slightly low-fi feel I was going for with this one.
I mentioned in a previous post, the few things I still felt like I needed for my setup were an FM synth, an analog or decent analog-emulation synth with more than one oscillator, and some better live effects that didn't require me to run things through the computer.
Right around my birthday, the Behringer Model D went on sale. So I got it for myself as a birthday present. And then I decided that with the chip shortage being a good excuse for everybody to raise prices, synths weren't going be getting any cheaper. Out of the two FM synths I was looking at, one had jumped up from 200 bucks to 240, and the other had jumped from 300 to 450. Pretty much overnight. So I said screw it, and bought the cheaper one. So there's a Sonicware Liven XFM just out of sight of the camera to my left that I've dabbled with, but I'm not comfortable enough to use it as a groovebox live yet. And I got a gift certificate to Sweetwater for Yule, and the Zoom MS 70 effects pedal, which is pretty much a staple for dawless jammers these days, was on sale. So I grabbed that and another cheaper spare pedal that had some basic effects and stereo input and output.
After about 5 minutes, I figured out pretty dang quickly why it's become such a staple for synth players. Because holy carp, it's versatile and you definitely get a lot out of it. I was trying to make things massive, but not hugely stretched and echoed because that would have made the drum sounds pretty muddy. I think it ended up with a pretty epic sound, with the three oscillators of the Model D all on different octaves, and the constant switching and playing with the sounds of the MS-1.
Well, this might be the last thing I post in 2022. The last three years feel like they've been the longest decade of my life. Let's hope things get less bad in the year to come.
