My favourite headcanon about the AU where Anakin doesn’t turn to the dark side and just has a normal happy family:
Luke eventually comes out as gay to his mom and his dad, and while Padme is being all super proud and hugging and kissing him, Anakin is standing there like ???What the fuck is gay???
Like, come on, my boy spent nine years on the star wars equivalent of the middle of nowhere and was then raised by the Jedi with their whole major puritan “no-romance-of-any-kind-with-any-gender-or-species” culture. He barely knew that romance or sex existed until he was 19, there is no way anyone ever told him what being gay means.
(But after Padme explains it to him he starts wearing a rainbow pin that says “I’m proud of my gay son” everywhere and studies queer culture in order to set him up with an Anakin Approved™️ boyfriend)
#he’s confused but he has the spirit#he loves his gay son#luke skywalker is gay#padme amidala#padme and luke#anakin skywalker#luke skywalker#anakin and luke#anakin doesn't fall#leia is just losing her shit laughing in the background

Chapter 102 - Darth Zoon
“Clear. Clear. All clear.” The men called out as they went through the facility. Ahsoka tried to listen to the troopers as Anakin and Obi-Wan filled time with their usual chatter on their way to the battle. She remembered how when she was younger she used to follow them adding to their debates without another care in the world. My, she really had grown since the clone wars.
“Alright, here it is.” Anakin announced when he came up to a square vent on the wall. “Pass me a Torque Wrench.” He held out his hand expectantly.
One of the clones went to pull the tool out of a satchel they’d brought with them.
“Wait a minute.” Cody tilted his head, looking at the vent another way. “Sir, how exactly do you plan for us to go through there?”
“You’d crawl through. There’s plenty of room. Here watch.” Anakin was about to bend over to demonstrate.
“No, I see it.” Obi-Wan nodded to Cody. “If we crawl through, and there’s someone on the other side, it will be hard to defend when on your hands and knees.”
Anakin shook his head. By his expression Ahsoka could tell that he was running out of patience. “How else do you suggest we get through the eight heavily occupied levels between us? He’s my Son, Haar’chak! Take your time, or come through if you're brave enough. I’m going in.”
And Obi-Wan did try to grab him before he went through, but he slid into the vent shaft before he could get a grip on his arm. Obi-Wan turned to say something, his words falling flat on his tongue.
“I understand. Go after him. We’ll try to push through the long way.”
Obi-Wan nodded and with a parting, “Force be with you.” He crawled down after Anakin.
“And with you master.” Ahsoka muttered her prayer quietly before looking up at Cody.

Settling the Score
Notes: This is complete crack inspired by the idea that Anakin's competitiveness is why he didn't fall to the dark side. Of course Yoda is the mischievous gremlin stirring the pot that ends up saving the galaxy. This wasn't edited and thrown together when the idea took over my brain like a virus
WC: 1k
Characters: Anakin Skywalker, Mace Windu, Palpy, Obi-Wan
Tay's Masterlist
Read on AO3
The darkness was an old friend to Anakin. He felt it sink into his blood, slithering its way through his body as it made its final push to fully take over. There was no point in fighting it anymore. Broken, fighting his legs from giving out underneath him, Anakin looked around.
The Chancellor’s office lay ruined with the signs of a lightsaber duel scattered all around the overturned furniture and scorch marks on the wall. Wind whipped Anakin’s sandy blonde curls, gusting in from the shattered window floor-to-ceiling window that used to span the whole of the Chancellor’s back wall. The evening traffic sped by, completely unaware that the Chancellor of the Republic sat on broken glass with his back against the wall, purple lightsaber pointed hovering at his throat.
“Anakin, I told you it would come to this!” The Chancellor pleads to him.
He’s frozen. The greatest warrior of a generation. The greatest Jedi of all time. And he’s frozen taking in the scene in front of him.
The darkness is trying to pull him under. It nearly has him. He watches Master Windu take a step forward, bringing his purple saber closer to the quivering man on the floor. The most powerful man in the Republic is nothing but a quivering pile of robes and flesh.
“You have lost,” he hears Master Windu say.
Red tendrils creep into the side of his vision. Anakin realizes he’s shaking from his final stand against the darkness consuming him.
“Padme,” he thinks to himself. “I must save her. I need her. I need him. He has the answers.”
Crackling blue light blinds him as he watches in horror lightning fly from the Chancellor’s hands right at Master Windu. A sith. The sith. Right in front of him. The ghost stories the masters in the creche told the younglings before bed to keep them from wandering at night. The myths that were on the verge of fading into legend until a fateful duel on Naboo.
And Anakin stood on the verge of joining them.
“He can save her,” he thought over and over as the lightning began to overtake Master Windu. “I need him.”
“But unsettled the score with Obi-Wan will be,” a familiar croaky voice whispered, slipping under the dark walls fortifying in his mind.
“What?” Anakin responded in confusion, unsure if his mind had finally fallen into chaos.
“Defeated the sith on Naboo, Obi-Wan did. Defeated Dooku, you did. Tied you are battling sith lords,” the voice clarified. Anakin wasn’t sure how, but he knew the voice had a mischievous smirk pointed towards him.
“I don’t see how that information is relevant right now,” Anakin answered.
“A sith lord the Chancellor is. Defeat him and best Kenobi you will. Bragging rights you will have.”
The voice was right. The sith were rare, only ever in pairs even when they weren’t fading into legend. There, with lightning crackling in the air, it clicked into place. Dooku was the apprentice. They now faced the master.
Back on Naboo thirteen years earlier, Obi-Wan faced the first sith the Jedi had heard of in centuries. Just days ago, Anakin cut the head off the Separatist snake when he defeated Count Dooku, the sith lord leading the Separatist cause. So, as the voice said, Anakin and Obi-Wan were currently in a tie for defeating sith lords. 1-1 to be exact.
Who knew when another opportunity would present itself.
Anakin found the hilt of his lightsaber hanging on his belt, the familiar weight an automatic beacon for his hand. Taking a step, his body felt like it was walking through sludge, red nearly taking over his vision. The Chancellor cackling on the floor at the center of it.
He ignited his lightsaber, a friendly blue seeping into the cracks of the red.
“Bragging rights you will have.”
Another step and Obi-Wan’s face appears in his mind, an exasperated sigh and eyes rolling as Anakin tells him how he defeated two sith lords in less than a week. Anakin’s animated, hands planted on his hips, smirking down at his old master.
“Oh, Anakin.” A fond tender tone Obi-Wan reserves only for him breaks through the walls.
One last step and without hesitation, Anakin quickly swings his lightsaber up to immediately bring it down through the Chancellor’s head. The lightning recedes, and Master Windu topples forward, catching himself on his hands and knees.
Instantly, the darkness disappears. Anakin’s mind and body feel the lightest they have since the Clone Wars began. The red in his vision crawls back, and he blinks to bring the scene back into focus. Not giving the Chancellor’s body a second glance, he moves to Master Windu’s side, offering his shoulder for the Jedi to lean on.
“Skywalker,” Master Windu says, “How did you do it?”
“I had a score to settle with Obi-Wan,” Anakin answers simply.
Windu wants to be surprised. He wants to think this is something he’d never expect any of his fellow Jedi to say after defeating a sith lord. He wants to believe that Anakin could not perplex him more after the most important moment in Jedi history. But as he stares up at Anakin, slowly regaining his strength and catching his breath, there is not an ounce of surprise he offers in the force as he registers what Skywalker just said to him.
“Of course you did” is all he can muster. “Let’s get back to the temple. Master Yoda will need to hear of this right away.”
Hours later, after Anakin helps Master Windu hobble back to their shuttle, after they return to the halls of the temple and inform the council of the events that just occurred, after Obi-Wan confirms his defeat of Grievous effectively ending the Clone Wars, and after Anakin greets his old master on the landing platform of the Jedi temple, Obi-Wan stands in front of a beaming Anakin, hands proudly on his hips.
“While you were out playing battle games with Grievous, master, I defeated another sith lord,” Anakin informs him.
Obi-Wan rolls his eyes at the grin that’s entirely taken over Anakin’s face, but he doesn’t deny the pride he can feel pounding in his heart. “Yes, well, let’s not forget I’m the one who taught you all that you know, my young apprentice. I’m glad to see not all of my teachings went in one ear and out the other.”
“Hey! I believe I was what they refer to as a ‘star pupil’.”
“Oh, Anakin.”

I think Anakin Skywalker has been doomed by the narrative long enough. It's Obi-Wan's turn to be inevitably swallowed up by the darkness he tries to shove away all his life. You know. As a treat.

I love the new designs, both of them. Anakin wearing darker colors as him accepting his dark nature, but still keeping his light that he has. Asoka on the other hand has the darker colors in reference to her master. Both of them in turn have silver to show that they are still apart of the jedi order.
seeing hayden as anakin all these years later, i can’t help but think of happy, loved jedi master anakin… yeah

What's 'Star Wars' about?
A while ago I got an 'Ask' that concluded with "what is Star Wars about, if not the Jedi, right?" And weirdly enough... I have to disagree.
I mean... to me? Yes. Star Wars is about the Jedi. A Jedi-less, Sith-less, lightsaber-less Star Wars movie or series will struggle to get me on board (which is why I was surprised that I loved Andor so much).
But if you read everything George Lucas said, if you think about the Jedi's place in his two trilogies... they're not front and center, right?
Sure, there's Luke Skywalker... but he's a learner, in the Original Trilogy. Same goes for Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi, in the Prequels. They're going through character arcs.
Otherwise, the Jedi are either used as mentors to the protagonist...
... or to deliver exposition...
... but they're mostly vectors Lucas uses to present his thesis.
Functionally-speaking, the Jedi are important in that they embody the Buddhist philosophies the movie's themes are based on.
But when it comes to the plot, they're secondary. That's because the the themes of these films are bigger than the Jedi themselves.
So the question becomes... what's are the themes?
The primary goal of the Star Wars films is to inspire kids to start thinking outside the box and teach them a set of values and psychological motifs that have been passed down through mythology and fairy tales.
These values can be summed up in the dichotomy between greed and compassion / selfishness and selflessness / pleasure and joy.
We all have both aspects and need to strike a balance between the two. After all, being greedy ultimately comes from fear and being afraid can happen to all of us. Problem is, unchecked fear can lead to anger, hate and a whole lot of suffering.
The more selfish you are, the more you want things and the more you're afraid that you'll lose everything you have, you'll get angry when someone tries to take it and that will hurt everyone around you.
In other words, fear is the path to the tempting/addictive Dark Side.
Thus, seeing as we'll be inevitably tempted by the Dark Side and give in at some point (because nobody's perfect), we should aim to be as selfless and compassionate as possible for our own good... but also for the greater good, because we're all connected to a life energy. You can call it Qi or God; in Star Wars it's known as the Force.
As such, we all form a symbiotic circle and working with that in mind is better than putting ourselves first and draining from everything and everyone around us.
But we also need to be careful because there will be people who give in to that selfish side and will try to control everything. When the time comes, we must stand up for what's right.
So that's Lucas' thesis.
If I had to sum them up, the six movies illustrate it as follows:
The Prequel Trilogy is about the consequences of greed, explored through Anakin on a smaller scale and the Senate on a larger one.
The Original Trilogy shows the triumph of compassion, through Luke, Leia & Han and the Rebellion's fight against the Empire.
Lucas talked about it multiple times, the Prequels are about how Anakin becomes Darth Vader and how the Republic becomes the Empire, and in both those cases, it happens because they're greedy.
The Senate is greedy in the more classical sense. They could give a shit about "symbiosis", no they're taking bribes, letting corporations dictate policy, using loopholes to keep themselves in power and halting any meaningful progress out of fear that the new status quo will conflict with their own self-serving goals.
Anakin's greed manifests in a different way. He turns to the Dark Side because of his attachment. He wants to stop Padmé from dying... but not because he wants to save her, rather he wants to save himself from feeling the pain of loss again and will do anything to not have to live without her, her own wishes and the natural cycle of life and death be damned.
In both cases, they cave under pressure orchestrated by Palpatine, but nobody puts a gun to their head. They make a deliberate choice that comes from a selfish place, and neither one takes personal responsibility for it, they blame others, the Separatists in the case of the Senate and the Jedi in Anakin's case.
The Republic becomes an Empire with thunderous applause, betraying the people it was meant to protect.
And when faced between doing something he knows is right and giving in to his selfish desires...
... Anakin elects to do the latter, thus betraying his family and leaving the Force in darkness.
These selfish choices impact the galaxy as a whole, including the only characters in the trilogy who were doing their best to be compassionate and live in symbiosis: the Jedi, Padmé and Bail.
These champions of the Light Side are stuck playing catch-up or helplessly witnessing the events unfold, throughout the trilogy. They're playing by the rules and Palpatine uses this to his advantage.
Thus, as the galaxy tears itself apart because of Palpatine's manipulations, the Jedi and Bail are ignored and gradually weakened until they're either rendered irrelevant or killed.
A new order is born, one built on blood, lies and greed: the Empire.
But a new hope remains.
While before, the Jedi and people like Bail stood alone as everything around them became willfully corrupt... now, a Rebellion inspired by their legacy has banded together to overthrow the current order. But they don't fight for power or personal glory, they fight for altruistic, compassionate reasons. There's a sense of general responsibility that moves them, they're all doing their part.
On a larger scale, we focus on the Rebels, who are tired of seeing people suffer and decided this needs to stop. They have gone from being passive, to proactive.
On a more personal scale, we see the evolution of Luke, from naive farmer to a hero, and guess what? More and more selfish people - like Han or Lando - are inspired to join the Rebellion, after seeing the exploits of Luke, Leia, or even Ben.
It all culminates in the final film, wherein:
The Rebels band together with the Ewoks - literal teddy bears whom the Empire, in their arrogance, never even considered to be a threat - to destroy the Second Death Star and free the galaxy from imperial tyranny.
At the same time, Emperor Palpatine pressures Luke, who is tempted by the Dark Side like his father was.
But instead of giving in to his selfish desire to kill Darth Vader for all the horrors he's done...
... he finds the strength to rise above it, instead showing compassion for his father, which, in turn, inspires Anakin to do the same.
He faces a choice, like he did in Palpatine's office, two decades prior...
... and this time he chooses right.
Children teach you compassion. Anakin lets go of his fear and anger, and saves his son at the cost of his own life, finally bringing balance back to the Force.
Good triumphed over evil. Its champions achieved victory by being selfless, hopeful and fighting together / helping each other.
And that's it, that's how the movies thematically tie together.
As you can see, the Jedi aren't that directly impactful on the overall plot, because it revolves around Anakin, Luke and the respective factions/institutions around them.
But what the Jedi do bring to the table is their ability to teach and inspire others, both in-universe and out. They're spiritually impactful.
The Jedi are the epitome of compassion, and it's partially through them that George Lucas teaches his values to the audience.
#to be clear: Star Wars doesn't HAVE to be about all this#This is just me trying to summarize what Lucas said in all his interviews and speeches#The post-Lucas Star Wars transmedia franchise made the Jedi more central than they were originally meant to be; especially in the Prequels#You see this in interviews from current SW creators /writers#but also small stuff like renaming the Prequel era “Fall of the Jedi” when it was originally named the “Rise of the Empire” era#meta#george lucas#star wars#jedi order#the force#anakin skywalker#luke skywalker#prequel trilogy#original trilogy

Yes, I'd watch the heck out of this. Spite and competition keeps Anakin and by chance the galaxy alive.
we poke fun at obi-wan for saying "sith lords are our specialty" and then getting his ass kicked by dooku, but in fairness, he was at the time the only person in living memory to have actually killed a sith. he showed remarkable humility honestly.

Today I updated Return of the Survivors with another new chapter. Below is a small summary. Please click on one of the links above to read more.
Chapter 98 - Betrayal
Anakin walked Mace-Ti into the make-shift recording studio they’d built on Beskarn. It didn’t have all the bells and whistles of the professional studios making his wife’s, and his if you promised not to tell anyone, favorite dramas. But it did have what he thought he’d need to credibly make it seem like Mace-Ti was anywhere in the galaxy he wanted. In truth, Anakin was quite proud of his little set-up. Most of it was salvaged from junkyards, but he could see a bunch of faked messages leaked to the empire, leading them farther and farther astray.
Anakin stopped and gripped the eighteen year old’s shoulder. “Remember, as far as he knows, you’re home. With the family I found to adopt you. He doesn’t need to know where that is.”
“Is it okay that I called you Uncle Anakin, in the last video, I mean?”
“Yes, if he asks, just tell him you call all Jedi an aunt or uncle. There’s no need to get into the specifics. Try not to name any names, and more importantly…” Anakin paused.
“Don’t tell him it was your step-brother who adopted me.” Mace-Ti filled in the gaps.
“...” Anakin shrugged. “I meant to say, more importantly, be yourself. But yeah, that’s a good subject to avoid. Anyways, there is a very brief delay to the recording, so if you do say anything you shouldn’t, I will be able to stop you.”
Mace-Ti nodded. “Thank you, Uncle Anakin. I never thought I’d ever have this opportunity.”
Anakin smiled and rubbed his nephew’s back. “Be yourself. I’ll be right outside, if you need anything.”
Mace-Ti turned at the last moment, threw an arm around Anakin and squeezed.

All of Revenge of the Sith, summarized:
Obi-Wan: I love and trust you, Anakin.
Anakin: No <3
Mace: Obi-Wan trusts you, Anakin.
Anakin: Opinion discared because Ive classified you as against me. Please forward my previous email to Yoda and get back to me about that council seat at your earliest possible convenience.
Yoda: mmm be a master, you will never be mmmm. melt steal beams, jet fuel cannot. mmmm. ignore that second thing I said, obi-wan cares very deeply abt you and are you still available tuesday at 6 for your next therapy session?
Anakin: Read✓ at 19:01
Padme: Obi-Wan loves and trusts you, Anakin. Just like I do.
Anakin: Not very gamer of you to not inherently validate my internal belief system :/
Palpatine: Obi-Wan hates ur loser ass lol. not like me tho I'm cool and always validate your internal beliefs (normal)
Anakin: I always knew he hated me, you're the only one willing to tell me the truth. thank God I never have to reevaluate my beliefs with you and don't have take any uncomfortable looks at my wants and desires. phew almost had to do some personal growth and acknowledge some things about myself thank God i avoided that
#:v#star wars#revenge of the sith#anakin skywalker#obi wan kenobi#I make this stupid stupid post only because I always see people say communicate is their issue#WHEN ITS NOT!!!#Anakin as a lot of self worth issues and Obi-Wan spent a decade and change trying to break through to him#literally everyone around Anakin is telling him ''obi wan cares about you''#but Anakin has a set belief about Obi-Wan that often shifts slightly depending on persecuted he believes he is#obi-wan often becomes a stand in for Anakin's frustration at the Jedi as a whole#and Anakin often doesn't acknowledge obi-wan as an individual with confliction or his own wants and desires#like. Theyre all painfully human.#and anakin expects rightfully that the people around him will give him grace when he's human and less than perfect#but then does not extend that grace to obi-wan when he's less than perfect#a lot of mistakes were made when it comes to Anakin's training and a lot lead to his ultimate fall from grace#but communication wasn't one of them#because Obi-Wan constantly and consistently tries to communicate with him#but anakin was never going to hear what he didn't want to hear

What if Obi-Wan had gone with Anakin to save his mother?
Anakin is broken, shattering into thousands of pieces before his eyes, utterly at a loss for what to do or how to feel as he's holding his mothers lifeless form and crying for all he's worth. Obi-wan can feel his anguish, his fear, his anger, his torment as his mind fights for what it should do versus what it wants to do; to make them pay. He has a front row seat to the painful display of his padawan crumbling before him. He can't let this stand. He was only following yoda's orders, his training. They were wrong. All of them. How could they deny the will of the child of the force when they would not do so to her. His padawan is conflicted. Scared. Obi-wan is meant to protect him, guide him, keep him safe and he has failed so spectacularly. He can feel them walking around outside the small hunt. Living. Breathing. Putting their children to bed. That will not stand. They will pay. By his own hand. It is the least he could do for Anakin. Cue qui-gon screaming no in the force, but it's at obi-wan
shout out to @anakinkshamer for putting up with me and always bouncing ideas back and forth. You are the greatest, my friend. <3

Genuinely baffling to me that in all of the discussions I've seen about Anakin and Ahsoka's first meeting and what his line about her being "a little young to be a padawan" and her reaction means for the worldbuilding that no one seems to have considered the possibility that he was just. Being kind of a dick.
He does not want her there. She is small and he finds her annoying and he didn't ask for a padawan anyway. And like. Sometimes people just look at children smaller than them who are being annoying and go "what are you ten?" to a teenager.
And Anakin became a padawan at nine so his perspective is definitely skewed because when he was a padawan all of the other padawans were bigger and older than him. Now, he's twenty and she looks tiny and his response is "no way was I that little she must be younger than I was" and to needle her about it.
