The Best Uses of Tom Petty Songs in Movies

Rock celebrity Tom Petty passed away yesterday at age 66. Petty produced some wonderful music on the span of his too-short life, and several of his tunes found their way during the last several decades to movies. Here are simply a few of those movies.

Rest in peace, Tom. Thank you for the songs — as well as the movies.

“American Girl” From

Possibly the most noteworthy usage of a Tom Petty monitor in cinema, this scene in The Silence of the Lambs is frequently known as the “American Girl” scene, in which young Catherine Martin (Brooke Smith) is cruising down the highway, unaware that she’s about to be abducted, ravaged, and (almost) skinned from the serial killer Buffalo Bill (Ted Levine).

“American Girl” also featured prominently within another cherished classic, the Amy Heckerling–led high school humor Fast Times at Ridgemont High. The movie was composed (and based on a book) from Cameron Crowe, who understands a thing or two of using music in movies (and abandoned a touching tribute to Petty on his Twitter accounts).

“Free Fallin”’ From Jerry Maguire

Talking of Cameron Crowe, he would later get to apply a Petty track to a few of his own movies as director, 1996’s Jerry Maguire. He even got Tom Cruise to sing together with the chorus. (He does not have a lousy voice either!) This scene captures a vital fact of Tom Petty: Should “Free Fallin”’ is determined by the radio while you’re driving alone, it’s impossible to not sing (or scream) along.

“Won’t Back Down” From Barnyard

The 2006 animated film Barnyard used “Won’t Back Down” effectively, by having a depressed cow afford the lead. You laugh but watch the clip. It works!

She is the One (Soundtrack)

The lovely “Walls” has been the lead single for its soundtrack into Edward Burns’ follow-up into his breakthrough The Brothers McMullen. Petty performed every song and wrote.

“You Got It” From Boys on the Side

Petty wrote “You Got It” as a member of this all-star band the Traveling Wilburys, together with bandmates Jeff Lynne and Roy Orbison. This is an example of a song playing a significant role attracting Whoopi Goldberg’s along with Mary Louise Parker characters.

‘Christmas All Over Again’ From Four Christmases, Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, Jingle All the Way

“Christmas All Over Again” is the gift that keeps on giving, at least to mainstream Hollywood vacation movies of suspicious quality.

As himself in FM

Petty appeared as himself in the 1978 movie FM, doing a radio interview. No tunes onscreen was performed by him, but man, does he appear like the embodiment of all rock.

As Himself in The Postman

In addition, he played the character of “Tom Petty” (sort of) from the 1997 post-apocalyptic flop The Postman, playing with himself again. He’s never officially called “Tom Petty,” but it’s pretty strongly implied that the Mayor of Bridge City is, in actuality, the chief of the Heartbreakers.

“Mary Jane’s Last Dance”

This is not technically a movie, needless to say, but it does star Kim Basinger as a girl who Tom Petty gowns up all nice and dances with. Then at the conclusion (SPOILER alert) she awakens! It’s a video that is fairly amazing.

Furthermore, his songs has been featured in movies like It’s Complicated, Elizabethtown (more Cameron Crowe) and Taps, plus television shows like The Sopranos, The Simpsons, along with WKRP in Cincinnati. He also had a recurring role in King of the Hill since Elroy “Lucky” Kleinschmidt. His movie and TV looks represent only a small section of his legacy that is cultural, but they are a significant one.
