Mathias Hammerstrøm - But I Don’t Mind

Mathias Hammerstrøm started composing electronic music in 2010. He discovered the emerging dubstep genre during a 10th grade school trip to London, when the class entered a CD store to look for new music. It must have been an old Rusko tune that immediately caught Mathias’ attention, playing on the store’s sound system.

Mathias quickly got into writing his own tunes, under "Mathix", inspired by the Circus Records trademark sounds of rebellious basslines, melodic harmonies, and punching drum beats. His tune "Trust Me", released on Prime Audio, and was played by dubstep pioneers Skream & Benga on BBC Radio 1 in 2013.

2014 marked the point when Mathias’ atmospheric inclinations began to shine. Mathias’ exploration of more textural, atmospheric sounds gave birth to his alter-ego "Amphior". With Amphior, Mathias was influenced by the melancholic styles of 2-step-garage and ambient music, in the stylistic vein of Burial.

Mathias still composes atmospheric electronica under his alias “Amphior”, having released his full-length album Shadowland on the Dutch label Shipwrec in September 2017.

Hammerstrøm became interested in singing back in 2017, where he was taking singing lessons at The Danish National Academy of Music, and wanted to create electronic music with his voice included.

There Is a Light Within Yourself is the title of the new debut-EP from Mathias Hammerstrøm.

The essence of Mathias’ music lies in its nostalgic atmosphere, told through his minimalistic lyrical universe and introverted vocal expression.

Mathias works with distant synth pads, murky basslines, and crackling drum beats to create a serene, electronic soundscape with vocal additions.

“I wanted to write an EP about the aftermath of loss, but I also wanted it to be more like a soothing experience than a sad one,” Mathias says. His ongoing fascination with exploring and expanding moods in his music shines throughout  this EP.

Lyrical themes throughout the album include forgetting yourself, feelings of deficiency, numbness and ultimately about letting go of the past.

“Personally, making the music on this EP has been like a therapeutic experience,” he says. “I hope it can help someone believe in themselves, to not give up and to not feel alone.”  (press release)
