A familiar moth girl was walking by carrying a cardboard box before seeing a very down Bragi. "Oh! Bragi!" She waved at him and went over, but slowed her pace when she saw how downtrodden he was. "Bragi..is everything okay?"

Bragi's all too ready to snap at whoever's come to bother him to just leave him alone so he can sulk, but on seeing the moth girl who had so kindly helped and listened to him during his initial attack, he stops himself as his eyes widen in recognition.

I went to a mid-week social, some sort of young black professional networking event. (I also saw a film by an old friend, someone with whom I overlapped in high school and college, which was an interesting experience. It hit different knowing the people in the film, and even knowing some of the precise details of the things they referred to, and so on, but also given that since our college days the friend in question seemed over the years to have become steadily less and less interested in being friends with me, for reasons I’m still not sure about, and I’m definitely sad about it but I guess it is what it is.) Anyway, about the social. I was hoping it would be a nice chance to meet some new people and have a good night on a weekday evening. It turned out to be a success — it was a good time, although that was mostly because I was with a friend from the department and I met some people I knew. I was hoping it wouldn’t be particularly stuck-up, but that might be too much to ask for black corporate Boston, if I’m being honest. I did talk to one or two new people, see some people I hadn’t seen in ages (and wasn’t sure if or when I’d see again), and get word of a party I otherwise would have known nothing about, so that was fun. Also, I feel like I’ve gotten out of the negative feedback loop of having more negative social interactions than positive ones and weighing the negative ones more heavily than the positive ones, leading to my behaving in ways that would lead me to have more negative ones, and so on, and I’m slowly getting into the opposite loop of having more positive ones and weighing the negative ones less, leading to expecting more positive ones, and thus having a more positive social presentation in virtue of which my positive expectations are thus fulfilled and thereby confirmed and reinforced, etc. So that’s fun.

I do have to say though that I feel a bit weird about having become more sociable and extroverted. Both about the fact of it, and perhaps how it's influenced my identity and conception of myself — like I'm not used to the person that I'm experiencing myself as having become, which occasionally leads to my not knowing how to react in certain situations because my OS hasn't updated uniformly yet, or to micro-moments of dissociation where I'm like witnessing myself being sociable and I'm like "ei, enti me ampa ara me nie?" and so on. But that's whatever. I think the more significant thing is that I occasionally feel a bit uncomfortable about the feeling of being "slicker" that seems to have attended my having become more extroverted and/or socially comfortable, and what it entails. Like I make small talk more easily, and part of that entails giving people compliments, asking them questions about their lives, expressing interest in the things they say, and so on, and I feel like there's a lot less effort in that than there used to be and I'm not sure if that's because I'm being a lot more glib about it, or it means less, or something. Or, rather, I'm a bit uncomfortable at the possibility that at least in some cases that might be what's going on, that I'm putting on an act, that I'm saying certain things which are motivated by making conversation rather than by genuinely caring about the content of the conversation in question.

It kind of feels as though — or at least it seems to me, given my experience, that it feels as though — there’s a distinctive phenomenology of caring about what people are saying, like it feels different in my brain, so to speak, the way I used to make conversation in the past, where it took effort, and I had to come up with things I wanted to know, and it took longer for me to process, and I felt like the questions I asked came from a genuine desire to know the answer and the things I said came from a genuine desire to share something, and thus I was better able to keep conversations in memory because they had more value to me, and so on, whereas now the fact that it's less of an effortful, deliberate process makes it feel like something I'm just doing for the sake of doing it. In fact, when I’m just making small talk I often find it hard to keep the details in mind afterward and it often feels like I’m not even genuinely paying attention. And I’ve encountered people who were extroverted and socially comfortable but at the price of seeming to be incredibly glib and slick and I don’t want to be that person at all.

This brings me back to the theme of developing one's memory as a moral imperative, which is both a surprising idea and an idea that I find surprising that I've been returning to in these entries: I feel like the better my memory was, the better I’d be at both making conversation and keeping people’s answers in mind, caring what they say, remembering them enough in a way to incorporate them into a filing cabinet whose integrity is commensurate with the importance I attribute to the people in question, and so on.

As mentioned from this first trailer, Rodriguez explains its web animated series takes place in the magical city of Lyngarth. 4 of its confirmed fictional protagonist characters where the HGA students are named to Rosemary, Sage, Parsley and Thyme. All of the girls from this said academy were attending a magical school upon starting for an upcoming adventure. He subsequently adds, they make friends and rivals, and they learn about some pretty huge world changing events that are happening in the shadows, and they make it their mission to help save the day.

He featured from a digital poster during a short online interview told Radyo Bandera, Amaryllis and Snapdragon are hanging out for a while, in front of the HGA. Based from this said poster art, there are bunch of the magical creatures that appears in this place around the Lyngarth City.

The former studio of Ellation Studios will be turned over possibly to Crunchy Onigiri, LLC in San Francisco, California, U.S.A.; as they rebranded into a regional anime-distributed office of Crunchyroll in Chinsinau, Moldova under the Consumer Division of Otter Media as Diez reported from a russian news site.

We contacted our news team for questioning to Crunchyroll via E-Mail and the Interactive Chat of V-CRX 2021 about the negative controversy issue of High Guardian Spice but, the streaming company manager deflects to decline for a comment.

We have several original titles that are coming up onto some of them announced like Fena: Pirate Princess and others later down the pipeline. We take a look of their shows between the anime and cartoons together to be showned on stage without its confusion upon informing the fans will see it first. We're so ready to share with the world with you".

In conclusion as final, High Guardian Spice will now being classified as a web-animated cartoon show. Do you think Rebecca could be nominated for an Oscar for Dune? I know you said it was a possibility but what do you think now that you've seen it.

If I was being brutally honest with myself the answer would be: no, I do not think a nomination is likely for Dune.

However, I remain optimistic and think she could be an outside chance. A very, very, very outside chance. I am clinging onto hope but there's a very rational and logical part of me that knew she wouldn't get nominated from the day I started predicting she would.

Dune's a space opera, a well received space opera but it's not your typical Oscars film. Of course, there are exceptions to what is considered your typical awards bait like Joker, Parasite or even Promising Young Woman last year. But genre bias is still fairly prevalent within the AMPAS.

So, whilst Rebecca has the notices and WB seems to be putting a fair bit of effort into the campaign, I would be surprised. WB has genuine acting chances with King Richard. Will Smith is guaranteed to be nominated and Aunjanue Ellis isn't far behind, and she would be in the same category as Rebecca.

Best Supporting Actress is not a barren category, if some of the right people like Ruth Negga, Jessie Buckley or even Kathryn Hunter get a decent campaign from Netflix or A24/Apple, then there's zero chance Rebecca will make it.

WB is still campaigning Dune because it's a very decent chance in most of the below the line technical categories as well as potentially still getting BP and BD nominations.

If Rebecca were to ever be nominated for a Dune film, it would probably be for Part II. Not because her material is necessarily better but because it's the closing chapter of an epic story that started in Part I and it would be more likely to get any nominations for the closing part, kind of like Return of the King in 2004.

Maintaining the Brain: Neurons that Fire Together Wire Together

Our brains consist of many different types of cells, including astrocytes, microglia, and neurons. These are the cells that people are indirectly referring to when you hear someone say that hitting your head can cause permanent damage even though the initial impact was a minor one. They are the primary cells that are responsible for signaling functions, and one can see this in their shape because they resemble an electric cord. The dendrites receive signals, process them in cell bodies, and send an output signal via the axons and synaptic terminals. These cells cannot multiply, and our heads never get larger, so it begs the following question: how do we continue to learn and store information? The answer is long-term potentiation (LTP).

LTP is when synaptic connections between neurons become stronger with frequent activation. Neuronal activation is an electrical signal called an action potential that emerges due to a change in ion locations resulting in electrical potential that generates a nerve impulse. When the same neurons keep getting activated, again and again, a shortcut is created. We have two crucial receptors that play a role in this mechanism: AMPA and NMDA. AMPA is activated first because a Mg2+ ion blocks NMDA. As AMPA gets activated, the neuron becomes depolarized (due to the previously mentioned electrical changes). Now, the neuron is more positive overall, which will push the Mg2+ ion out of the channel, which is called the Law of Attraction in physics (i.e., opposites attract). With the Mg2+ ion removed, calcium ions can move freely through the NMDA receptor, and this influx of calcium initiates cellular mechanisms that cause more AMPA channels to be produced and placed on the synapse of the neuron, making the pathway activated quicker and quicker. These pathways become a default, and this is called long-term potentiation. The opposite of long-term potentiation is long-term depression, a decrease in synaptic strength, so if “you don't use it, you lose it.”

Long-term potentiation is thought to be a way in which the brain changes in response to experience, and thus may be an underlying mechanism for learning, retaining memory, and even overall physical health. With long-term potentiation our default pathways are formed; so if we train ourselves to be anxious and stressed individuals, then we will be at an increased risk for developing hypertension, heart disease, cancer, and almost any other physical illness. We often forget that stress itself is a risk factor along with other lifestyle choices such as diet and regular physical activity. An interesting article, "The Science of Happiness: Why Complaining is Literally Killing You," delves into this point of view:

“When your brain is firing off these synapses of anger, you're weakening your immune system; you're raising your blood pressure, increasing your risk of heart disease, obesity and diabetes, and a plethora of other negative ailments... This is why it is so important to spend time with people who lift you up. Want to be happy? Surround yourself with happy people who rewire your brain towards love.”

Long-term potentiation is also the basis of cognitive-behavioral therapy, which is a form of psychotherapy treatment that is goal-oriented and takes a practical approach to problem-solving. Cognitive-behavioral therapy recognizes the underlying mechanism of long-term potentiation: neurons that fire together wire together and puts it to good use by trying to change default patterns of thinking and behavior. By changing these default patterns, the result changes how we feel. For example, a common practice in cognitive-behavioral therapy is to keep a daily gratitude journal. The therapist may ask their client to write three things they are grateful for each morning and each night, whether it be something as simple as having water to drink or a significant life event. Forcing yourself to make these connections continuously, and being in a default repetitive state of gratitude, has been scientifically proven to decrease rates of depression and other mental illnesses.

Another perspective we can approach LTP from is from the lens of faith and prayer since prayer has an element of repetition in it. In his book, Jon Pahl states that "Peacebuilders pray, and prayer is a nonviolent practice. Even more: prayer has power. The power of prayer is neither political nor miraculous. Personally, prayer builds confidence. The repetition of prayer comforts a troubled mind with the solace of the familiar. Culturally, prayer builds trust. Communing with God and others can make any challenge seem surmountable. Socially, prayer builds movements.”

Yes, if we could rewire our brains towards love and peace with each prayer, we could find comfort and peace, and build bridges with those around us. In 2019 alone, an Islamic scholar mentioned the word "neurons" in his weekly sermons nine times, a fascinating statistic for a scholar who is neither a neuroscientist nor psychiatrist. Some excerpts from these sermons include:

“[when recited and listened to a couple times during the day and in the Tarawih Prayer] the Qur'an will establish itself better in our minds; our neurons will open their doors like the doors of a castle to the Qur'an and say 'enter.' Therefore, who knows how many times a day, a reunion will be established with the Qur'an.”

“Another scholar says: 'Even if we had four hands instead of two, they would not be sufficient to do things we need to do.' … In this case, we must send orders to the millions of neurons in our brain at the same to dedicate them all to the same task. … God opens you a window to exit.

“[‘The entire universe is a great book of God; the meaning of each letter is nothing but God.’] Just as you … use all of your neurons to see the endless possibility of bounties, lined along like a gallery as if He is to say, 'see and think as you walk this gallery.'

To return to the biological aspect of neurons, one key component that is also valuable to synthesize all the information we have just covered, and that is the concept of "mirror neurons." When we observe another person these mirror neurons start to fire and a kind of virtual reality simulation is formed in our minds, contributing to the construction of a theory of our intentions. For example, when someone smiles, you want to smile back; when someone gets a paper cut, you feel their pain; or when someone cries, you cannot help but cry as well. These are all phenomena explained by mirror neurons. Mirror neurons explain empathy on a biological level and are present even in animals.

From a multi-disciplined approach, including biological, psychosocial, and spiritual perspectives, one lesson becomes clear: we have the free will and responsibility to carve our default pathways. To make sure these default pathways are filled with love, peace, serenity, alongside discipline, patience, and resilience is paramount to our personal and collective health. By defining our own neural pathways, we will also be building our community's networks since neurons mirror each other.
