Okay Emily, I have to ask a question that's been burning in the back of my mind since you started your Boromir Lives AU series: how did Amon Hen go down in this AU?
Canon Amon Hen: remote, isolated, barren, full of enemies

In a little glade not far from the lake he found Boromir ...
He was sitting with his back to a great tree, as if he was resting. But Aragorn saw that he was pierced with many black-feathered arrows; his sword was still in his hand, but it was broken near the hilt; his horn cloven in two was at his side. Many Orcs lay slain, piled all about him and at his feet.
Tumblr media
Aragorn knelt beside him. Boromir opened his eyes and strove to speak. At last slow words came. 'I tried to take the Ring from Frodo ' he said. 'I am sorry. I have paid.' His glance strayed to his fallen enemies; twenty at least lay there. 'They have gone: the Halflings: the Orcs have taken them. I think they are not dead. Orcs bound them.' He paused and his eyes closed wearily. After a moment he spoke again.
Tumblr media
'Farewell, Aragorn! Go to Minas Tirith and save my people! I have failed.'
'No!' said Aragorn, taking his hand and kissing his brow. 'You have conquered. Few have gained such a victory. Be at peace! Minas Tirith shall not fall!'
Boromir smiled.
'Which way did they go? Was Frodo there?' said Aragorn.
But Boromir did not speak again.
Tumblr media
'Alas!' said Aragorn. 'Thus passes the heir of Denethor, Lord of the Tower of Guard! This is a bitter end. Now the Company is all in ruin. It is I that have failed. Vain was Gandalf's trust in me. What shall I do now? Boromir has laid it on me to go to Minas Tirith, and my heart desires it; but where are the Ring and the Bearer? How shall I find them and save the Quest from disaster?'
He knelt for a while, bent with weeping, still clasping Boromir's hand. So it was that Legolas and Gimli found him. They came from the western slopes of the hill, silently, creeping through the trees as if they were hunting. Gimli had his axe in hand, and Legolas his long knife: all his arrows were spent. When they came into the glade they halted in amazement; and then they stood a moment with heads bowed in grief, for it seemed to them plain what had happened.

Whole fic for 'We do not love the sword for its sharpness
Warning: major character death because it's my take on Amon Hen and Boromirs death
(Not hugely original, I know, but eh, it fit the race against the clock prompt for day 1 of whumptober)
Just as he manages to fell the last of the orcs that had gathered at the top of the hill near the bleak remains of the seat of seeing, Aragorn heard a great ringing cry come from further down – HasteUrgencyAidByTheValarHelpHelpHelp – the horn of Vorondil had sounded, just as it had been at the beginning of this quest, and with its urgent song it compelled all those who could to aid the fair son of Gondor.
The horn sounds again, another desperate call, the orcs faltering against the brightness of the sound, and Aragorn moves; springing into action, he belts down the hill to where that desperate sound had come from, followed closely by Legolas and Gimli both – the tree branches grasping and snagging at their legs, hindering them in their race against time. Soon enough, they break into an area of flatter ground to the sound of pitched fighting and the unmistakable whistle-thud of arrows meeting flesh – No, it couldn’t be! – but there is scant time to pause, as the fresh set of orcs set upon them. Aragorn is a near blur in his action; his sword biting deep into orcish flesh and his dagger backing it up. He dimly registers a low whistle from Gimli about the numbers of dead already lying around them; Boromir was a man who took after the warrior legends of old, and his skill with a blade was formidable.
A sudden icy dread seized his spine as he broke through the enemy ranks and races ever closer – Merry and Pippin were with him, and if that were the case then Boromir would willingly sacrifice his body to see his “little ones” safe. Aragorn finally burst into the clearing, and laid eyes on that which he had dreaded most – Boromir is slumped over his knees, several black arrows piercing his chest, blood leaking from the wounds crimson-bright as it dripped onto the forest floor. A great, hulking orc looms over him, drawing a twisted black bow to deliver the final shot.

NO!

With a great cry Aragorn brings his sword arcing down on the misshapen bow, breaking it clean in twain. A grunt, and the uruk hai he'd just tackled pushes him back - the both of them thudding into a tree - and the uruk's curved shield comes arcing up and the points of it thud into the bark either side of his neck, trapping him there until he ducks out from underneath, just in time to avoid the swing of an equally wicked sword. From then on, the duel is a blur of fierce motion, of swords dropped and near misses up to the point Aragorn manages to skewer it on the point of his sword, then swiftly behead it.
He sprints over to Boromir and skids to his knees by his side.
"They took the little ones!" Boromir manages to grit out.
"Stay still." Aragorn replies, almost a command, as his hands clamp desperately around one of the arrow wounds, trying to stem the slow bubble of blood.
"Frodo. Where is Frodo?" it is nearer a whisper now, and Aragorn can hear the hitch in his breathing as Boromir struggles against the pain.
"I let Frodo go," he whispers back.
"Then you did what I could not, I tried to take the ring from him." his breathing stutters again, turning into near frantic gasping for air.
"The ring is beyond our reach now," is Aragorn's reply, a reassurance
"Forgive me, I did not see ... I have failed you all."
"No, Boromir. You fought bravely. You have kept your honor."
Aragorn reaches for one of the arrows - to stem the flow further, or to remove it, he doesn't know - but Boromir weakly bats his hand away.
"Leave it! It is over ... the world of Men will fall, and all will come to darkness and my city to ruin ... Aragorn." Desperation laces his tone as blood spills from his lips, his hand shooting upwards to clasp Aragorn's shoulder.
Laying one hand of his own over it, Aragorn reassures him "I do not know what strength is in my blood, but I swear to you I will not let the White City fall, nor our people fail."
"Our people...our people..."
He can see Boromir's hand grasping for his sword, laying on the leaf litter just out of his reach, so Aragorn places it in his hand and with the last of his strength Boromir brings it thudding to his chest in a pale imitation of a soldier's salute.
"I would have followed you, my brother, my captain, my King." Boromir grits out between bloodied lips, his face pale, throat working against the blood choking it.
Those words are final, and the life in his eyes fades out, and the agony slips from his face with it.
"Be at peace, son of Gondor." he says, and Aragorn bends down to place a kiss on his forehead - a benediction and a farewell in one to one of the greatest Men he had known in his long years of life.

one thing that's just one of my weird little personal wishes, i really wish gandalf used more of his Hobbit style alchemical "magic" in LoTR, he really only uses it for fireworks at the very beginning then he mainly just uses his ring and divine authority
#which it makes sense thematically that he doesn't wield much of his true divine power during the Hobbit but does during LotR#because it's not just a magical “power” to be used.. it's divine autonomy that only has potency in his realm of authority#which his only authority in the mundane realm is as a single man#but in LoTR he is granted high authority over the non-native spirits of middle earth. able to strip saruman of his own and turn wraiths#and even directly contest sauron's influence over the ringbearer granting frodo a moment of free will on amon hen#but in the Hobbit when dealing with goblins and dragons all he can do is wield alchemical tricks accented by his ring's command over flame#thought i expect he commanded far greater power against the necromancer in dol guldur. particularly when following saruman's command#who did already have White authority#standing tall in the spiritual realm.. naught but an old man in the mundane realm. it lends a deeper layer to the imagery of him sitting#alongside aragorn and glorfindel at elrond's banquet... appearing even more kingly to frodo's eyes than the elfstone himself.#because at that table it was the spiritual form that was seated with highest majesty.. rather than worldly influence#though aragorn possessed a spiritual nature approaching even that of elves.. he still appeared a prince next to elders of the First Age#and beyond the First Age even to the timeless dawn of creation itself#even shrouded in Grey.. gandalf dwarfed him#LoTR is a monolith. what a truly rich tapestry of life#tolkien you have far surpassed the anglo saxon chronicler poets you so revered... and woven something that will endure even longer#rest well#oh yeah i was gonna write something about why he didnt use his ring much in the Hobbit too but that'll max out tags#oh yeah i was gonna say something about why he didnt use his ring much in the hobbit but i guess i said enough#I'll max out tags

Its name was Cirith Ungol, a name of dreadful rumour. Aragorn could perhaps have told them that name and its significance; Gandalf would have warned them. But they were alone, and Aragorn was far away, and Gandalf stood amid the ruin of Isengard and strove with Saruman, delayed by treason. Yet even as he spoke his last words to Saruman, and the palantír crashed in fire upon the steps of Orthanc, his thought was ever upon Frodo and Samwise, over the long leagues his mind sought for them in hope and pity.   Maybe Frodo felt it, not knowing it, as he had upon Amon Hen, even though he believed that Gandalf was gone, gone for ever into the shadow in Moria far away. He sat upon the ground for a long while, silent, his head bowed, striving to recall all that Gandalf had said to him. But for this choice he could recall no counsel. Indeed Gandalf's guidance had been taken from them too soon, too soon, while the Dark Land was still very far away. How they should enter it at the last Gandalf had not said. Perhaps he could not say.
This reminder that Frodo still thinks Gandalf is dead hurts my heart.
Also i love how it's implied that Frodo can feel Gandalf thinking about him, and so tries to turn to him for guidance through memories of conversations. But they never talked far enough into the future for Gandalf to help him now, and even though he is still alive we can feel his loss to Frodo all the more keenly.

For: Boromir :: @sonxofxgondor Muse: Halrë Verse: LOTR | AU
if anyone were to ask where they could find Ihain, they would most likely get an answer of "I'm not sure where he is," or "The Mountains possibly." although it would really depend on who was asked, for very few folk actually knew the true location of the old wandering blacksmith. even then, he didn't always stay in contact as few birds could reach his mountainous home.
Halrë didn't know what had brought him to Amon Hen. it wasn't one of his normal places to go but that didn't put him off. sharp hearing caught the sound of a Horn and he followed it quickly, always on alert. taller than most at 7ft5, it wasn't long before the old elf spotted the source of the horn- and the reason behind it. but no one had noticed him yet.
a fact that the Orcs would soon come to regret.
blacksmithing was what most knew Halrë for. yet the two nearly 7ft long swords at his sides weren't for decoration purposes. he just very rarely got involved in fighting, preferring to make weapons instead of using them. being attacked from the back wasn't what the orcs had expected. so it didn't take long for him to reach the Gondorian and the two Hobbits, leaving dead orcs behind him.
