He's basically a mixture of Miss Marple and Poirot: great at noticing things and unable to mind his own business :D (Then he wonders why he finds mysteries everywhere he goes...)

In all three books he's solving a murder mystery, which is odd because in The Unfortunate Moth he says he rarely investigates murders :P (The out of universe explanation is of course that murder mysteries are more interesting than, say, robberies. The in-universe explanation? Maybe Phil's a magnet for murders and mysterious deaths ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ )

Haha you caught out one of the weirder ones on the list. It's basically the idea of a town that teleports from world to world, and yes, it is inspired by the jenny nicholson video.

Here's a snippet:

From this vantage, Juro could see almost every street of Polurtu; it lay in the basin of a valley, with farm and ranchland surrounding, and trees that crept in from the hills too steep for either. A lake high atop the northern hill fed a river that passed alongside the town and out south, where the valley had continued into those old, familiar forests. Now, the forest had been replaced by a sparkling white void. The void surrounded the town; even had Juro’s view not been significant, still he would have been able to see the unnatural whiteness of the sky, distant with speckled glimmers. He saw that the void interrupted every place precisely where his memorization of the Ritic Forest had failed him. For a moment, he feared that some terrible fate had befallen the forest, and that the strange magic of Polurtu had protected it; but, very soon, he came to realize that Polurtu itself had left the world behind, taking Juro with it.

Editing back through my work and I stumbled into this asshole. 🙃

Mal staggered with a half-empty bottle of airplane wine in hand, that daddy’s money paid for. Unlike his cohort, Noah had to work hard to get into his graduate program; Without his scholarships, unpaid internships, and paid TA and tutor jobs on top of being a full-time student, there was no way that Noah would have been able to afford his tuition. His parents kicked him out early on, so he didn’t have the luxury of wasting time nor money. He was there to get his degree, land a decent-paying job in his field of interest, and get the fuck out.

The well-libated colleague “accidentally” spilled some of the alcohol all over Noah’s front, and he appeared to have been aiming for the laptop. “—!!” Noah reacted just in time, pulling his equipment away from the splash zone as Mal laughed cruelly.

Definitely some contention here on all sides. 🤔✨

Quick Halloween project teaser

From my Cthulhu Mythos short story I'm writing with the help of @actualblanketgremlin to hopefully sell for Halloween this year...

He laughed. “Don’t play games with me, little one. Just be honest. He’s here, isn’t he?”

“I don’t see why that’s any of your business.”

“Sadie,” I mumbled, forcing the knob to turn under my fingers.

“It’s very much my business, little girl,” he said, and he wasn’t smiling anymore. “I have things to do and I’m not here to waste my time.” His voice lowered, through the crack in the door I glimpsed him leaning down over her. “You wouldn’t want me to lose my temper, would you? That’s so tiring for me. Always a dreadful thing, to put people in their places. I do hate the strain.”

“You’re-” She stumbled over her words, I pushed the door open wider. “You’re the one who said you would, not me. I’m not doing anything.”

“What do you have there?” My stomach dropped at O’Tipp’s snapping words. “You didn’t have that before. Give me that!”

Sadie yelped. I slammed the door open. Heart in my throat, my eyes met hers as she stood, yanked up by her new favorite necklace. His hand wrapped around it, tight enough the cord trembled.

“O’Tipp!” I cried.

He stopped. He turned. His eyes were almost the same shade as mine, and I met them without flinching. O’Tipp took a deep, as if breathing for the first time. I stepped forward.

“I’m right here, Mr. O'Tipp,” I said.

7 Days for Fae: A low-stakes realistic middle grade story about an autistic girl learning to accommodate her own needs, making a new friend, and helping her aunt understand that having a nonbinary parent isn't that big a deal. MC is also physically disabled and her new friend is ADHD-coded.

Cracks in the Stone: A steampunk high fantasy following a royal bastard prophesied to save the kingdom when all they really wanted was to have a normal life. Set in a kingdom with an entirely different gender system, MC is physically disabled, important side character is intellectually disabled. No one is white.

To Die Among the Stars: A dystopian sci fi in which people no one is supposed to miss—the poor, mentally ill, outcasts, and inhuman—are quietly stolen away to experiment on. But each of those people left behind someone who cares, and they won't rest until they've unraveled the mystery and saved their families. All of the 5 POV characters are disabled and/or mentally ill, and 2 are trans. The group is also racially diverse.

Word count: 19,569/85,000

Emerald Outpost: A sci fi thriller following a team of spies sent on a nonsense mission as punishment, only to discover that they might be the only ones who can save their planet as well as their enemies'. MC is Jewish and bi, the rest of the main cast includes a gay Muslim man, lesbian Latina woman, aro ace Latino man, and Black bi trans woman.

Word count: 392/50,000

Dragonfly Wings: A middle grade fantasy about a changeling girl who is taken back to faerieland but finds she no longer knows how to stop masking as a human. MC is autistic-coded.

Falling Petals: A historical story covering 100 years and 4 generations in a family that loves each other but is living in a world they don't fit into in very different ways and find themselves hurting each other instead. Entire family is Jewish and all 4 MCs are autistic-coded (except for the last one who is able to realize she's explicitly autistic).

After the War: An urban high fantasy following a war between the human and elfen countries, as people struggle to return to a peaceful normal after 30 years of violence. Werewolves, vampires, and mers were unwillingly affected by a conflict that wasn't theirs. No one trusts each other. But they have to move on somehow. Basically everyone is physically disabled and traumatized.

Pencil: does this character have any "sketchy" habits? Have they ever broken the law? Do they regret it?: Already answered! :D

Creation of Adam: choose one character that is not present at the beginning of this work. How did you introduce them into the story?: Leo is the last of the main cast to appear, so here's his first scene (well, the first scene where he speaks):

Phil was luckier than Király. Her teacup was on a saucer, and the tea that had spilled out of the cup had landed in the saucer. The table itself was unharmed. But how was she to get the tea back into the cup without spilling it? She was seriously considering just drinking the tea from the saucer, good manners be damned, when a shadow fell over the table. She looked up, expecting to see a waiter, and came face to face with the stranger. "Do you need help?" he asked politely, offering her a handkerchief. Phil took it mutely, too stunned to think of anything to say. She mopped up the puddle of tea in the saucer. It left the handkerchief a soggy mess. She began to hand it back to the man, then realised it would just soak his pocket. He laughed, with a hint of embarrassment in his voice. "It's all right, you can keep it. I have more." "Thank you," Phil said, finally recovering her voice. Rachael would throw a fit if she knew she'd been talking to a strange man, business partner or not, and that thought was partly what made her said, "Won't you sit down?" He sat down opposite her and a waiter brought him his coffee. An awkward silence fell as neither Phil nor the stranger could think of what to say. "I saw you in Hong Kong," Phil began abruptly, suddenly determined to show she knew more about her aunt's business dealings than Rachael thought. If the stranger told Rachael, maybe dear old auntie would finally tell Phil what she was doing instead of dragging her around the world without a by-your-leave. "And on the train to Moscow. If you're looking for my aunt, I think she's in Drawing Room A." The stranger looked blank. It suddenly occurred to Phil that it was just possible she had jumped to the wrong conclusion. "Your aunt?" he repeated slowly. "Does she work for the theatre company?" It was Phil's turn to look blank. "Theatre? Aunt Rachael has never been to a theatre in her life." Realising that something was wrong, she continued, "I think there's been— Well, I think I mistook you for someone else. Maybe we should start with introductions? I'm Ophelia Patton. My aunt owns a company that makes burglar alarms, and I thought you were one of her business partners." "Pleased to meet you, Miss Patton. I'm Leopold Colman. I work for the Century Theatre in London."

Paper: Who do you feel is your most two-dimensional or underdeveloped OC? Why is this? (including those that are still in development/haven't been written about yet):

Kilan from Death and the Emperor and Irímé from The Power and the Glory. I didn't think enough about where Kilan's character arc would go before I started writing, so he's basically dragged along by the plot without doing much ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ With Irímé, on the other hand, I knew exactly where his character arc would go. Then Lian barged in, took the role I intended for Irímé, and now Irímé has nothing important to do :(

What a happy coincidence that we were already good friends. And I can tell you, the insights he has on the case are quite remarkable. “Noah…..” Ali leaned forward, brushing his lips softly over his habibi’s. How sweet Noah tasted on his tongue; a Georgian peach. He wanted to savor that flavor as he pulled him closer and deepened the kiss.

“Mnnnhh—!!” Noah moaned inwardly, his glasses completely fogged and lopsided on his nose.

Very gently, Ali took Cauldwell’s spectacles off and folded them neatly with one hand, placing them on the bedside table as he leaned forward and pressed Noah into the mattress. And how Noah responded—that total trust, wrapping his arms tightly around the back of his neck to pull them closer yet.
