Rhyne turned towards the door, and met my eyes. His smile glowed with malice

“What do you make of this, Runner?”

I must’ve stepped too close to the door. Or perhaps, he’d heard my footsteps. I froze in my spot, trapped within the eyes now locked upon me. Only one person in the room did not stare at me now - a person I’d not seen before, for she hid in the back of the room, behind a large table. I knew her on sight. The black veil, the red curtains framing the table, revealed her identity to me.

With hesitation, I stepped into the room. Glass scraped under my feet.

“Forgive my intrusion,” I said. “I heard glass shatter and came to see if anyone had been hurt.”

Every head turned to me. Even the portraits seemed to watch me now that I’d moved. Mr. Dartmere raised his head from his hands, shoulders shaking. Rhyne, he said nothing, but color left his cheeks and his gaze hardened as he looked upon me, as it always does. Well, there was naught I could do about that.

“Runner Rosedown,” Rhyne greeted. I smiled at him.

“Forgive me my intrusion,” I said. “I heard the shatter of glass and came to see what was the matter. Has anyone been hurt?”

“No,” Rhyne said, voice flat. “Unless,” he added. “The spirit cut themselves upon the glass.”

“So you do believe in spirits,” Dartmere said, his hollow gaze shifting towards Rhyne. Rhyne did not seem to notice. His eyes were focused on me.

I shook my head. “Strange things happen in midwinter,” I said. “The snow brings an isolation of the soul, and madness follows even in our grand cities. Perhaps even the dead are made deranged by it, and driven to actions they never would in life.”

“You can’t possibly believe that,” Rhyne said, his soft voice cold as the air outside.

Nothing I could say would satisfy him, I know this. Instead, I said, “Here, may I look at the clock?"

Haunted by the events at the Glint Hall Hotel, Owen Rosedown writes a letter to the one person he knows will understand��

Owen is a Runner - a detective for hire - and no stranger to crime and death. He's not so familiar with spirits. When his cousin, Loretta, asks for his help, Owen doesn't hesitate. It should have been so simple to investigate the medium. But Owen's meeting with Theodore Dartmere takes a turn he couldn't have expected. And when the lights go out, the Damned will claim their feast.
