A group of unlikely friends will be meeting up online this Monday as they always do, to play several rounds of Overwatch and exchange pleasantries over Discord. Their Discord server, “OverFriends,” is a social ecosystem that survives solely on the thin veneer of anonymity that comes with screen names and anime profile pictures. It has been populated by the five gamers since David “KleenexBandit” Ameville and Aaron “MantCeltBteelSeams” Baker met while fighting together in the popular hero-based shooter. 2. We were dancing but all of a sudden it’s a slow song and we’re standing here awkwardly staring at each other.

Gabby blinked in surprise when the fast-paced, throbbing music that had her whipping her hair suddenly changed into the dulcet tones of Ed Sheeran’s Thinking Out Loud started to play.

She looked to Archie, who stared back at her, as awkward as she. His hands drifted to his sides, dropping suddenly from the high-paced dance moves they’d been performing to Imagine Dragons. Gabby would’ve burst out laughing at the change, if she wasn’t so laser-focused on Cheryl’s watching them with a peculiar expression on her face. No, not peculiar, Gabby noted.

Evil. Amused. Amevil. A highly dangerous combination Gabby had seen too many times before. And as it was, Gabby hadn’t planned on dancing with Archie; she’d been spun around by Moose and found herself face-to-face with him. And, as usual, Archie looked a little out of place with all the dancing bodies around him. A leftover of his awkward-invisible phase that Gabby knew he was struggling to come to terms with.

Just as Archie knew she was struggling to be seen with him in person. Because she wanted to. She so wanted to. She wanted to be swept up in his arms and sway to the music like all the other couples around them. He looked so good, and he was so sweet, and when they studied together he always made her laugh and feel like her own person and not Cheryl’s Black twin and…

Fuck it. Gabby started to reach out toward him, smiled her most dazzling smile that was just for him. The one that always got that famous Archie Andrews bashful smile in response she loved to see and worked to bring out. She started to step toward him, ready to put her hands on his shoulders. But Archie stepped back, gave her that small, understanding smile he did when they went their separate ways and said, “Have a good night,” before sliding his way back to the crowd, shooting a parting smile over his shoulder.

“What?” Cheryl’s voice announced her arrival at Gabby’s side. Gabby loved Cheryl, but she had a nasty habit of inserting herself into things she didn’t need to be in. “You’re not going to let him get off on his wild fantasies?”

“Cheryl,” Gabby said. “You can be such a bitch sometimes.”

“Yeah? And?”

Gabby looked toward her feet, forcing herself not to watch Archie walk away. Knowing if she did so, her heart would break even further.

5. It’s time to fight the boss and if I don’t tell you now, I might not live to tell you - Averey

For the first time since Averey had set foot in S.T.A.R.Labs, the building was quiet. Of course, she was in the lower levels of thebuilding, playing and rewinding the security footage of their last brawl with theReverse-Flash. There had to be something she missed. An opening. A weakness. Something.

Any second now. Or a fraction of a second, or a nano-second,whichever was smaller, the Reverse-Flash would return, and they would startround two of their fight. Her eyes shifted to the one video feed that cycledthrough the exterior of S.T.A.R. Labs. Only, what were the chances of himcoming inside the building? He had already done enough on the inside; earningeveryone’s trust, isolation S.T.A.R. Labs by forcing the explosion that gavethem all abilities, and so much more.

Now the fight was outside these walls. Full on contact. Andall she wanted to do was sink her fist into his smug, stupid face. And run inthe opposite direction.

With a growl, Averey slammed her hands down onto the computerkeyboards. “Damn it!”

“Hey, hey!” Cisco loudly spoke up. “Watch the merchandise.”Averey ignored him, pushing her chair back from the computer and stormedtowards the elevators. “Where are you going?” Cisco hurried to catch up to her.“Caitlin needs to look at you.”

“I’m taking a gander outside,” Averey said, taking quickstrides towards the elevators. She slapped her hand repeatedly onto the callbutton of the elevator. Why was it moving so damn slow?

“Why?” Cisco asked.

“Why?” Averey repeated. “Mate, there’s no way this could allhave been planned out this far.There’s got to be something I didn’t see.” She lifted her thumb to her mouthand bit down on the nail. “He was just moving so bloody fast…”

“There’s a lot we’ve missed this whole time,” Ciscoinsisted. “You can’t blame yourself for not seeing it. Even with yourabilities.”

“Ha!”

Finally. The elevator dingedand the doors slid open. Cisco hurried past Averey, and entered the elevatorsfirst, motioning her in after him. Eyebrows lowering slightly, she silently didas she was ked. Slumping back into the corner, she tap, tap, tapped her indexfinger on the hand rail.

Even after the doors shut, Cisco didn’t press any buttonsthat corresponded to the floor.

“Cisco!”

“I’ve never seen you like this before,” he said, moving to placehis body between herself and the elevator panel. “Like, ever.”

“How?”

“Agitated.”

Averey tapped her finger faster, staring at him. Still, shewouldn’t get herself to say what was actually making her so…frantic would bethe better word. Compared to how laid back she usually was, so in control withwhat she thought. What she felt…

Cisco stared back, until he expelled a breath of air throughhis nose when he heard the familiar crackle of the PA system about to be used.

“Cisco, Ave, you guys better get up here,” Caitlin said in atense whisper. “He’s back.”

Faster, Averey tapped her finger against the metal handrail.So fast, the tip of her finger started to hurt. She was sure a dent wasstarting to impress into her skin. Cisco jabbed his knuckle into the button totake them back up to the Cortex. With each chime, with each floor theyascended, dread filled her stomach. This had only been a small reprieve. Timethe Reverse-Flash gave them to re-cooperate before going to fight, what he forsure saw as a pointless battle. He would win. He had planned for it.

Averey grabbed the stop elevator button and a loud ringinginstantly filled the air.

“What are you–?”

“I really like you.”

“I…sorry?” Cisco asked. He squinted, shaking his head at thesudden change in topics. “What? Not that I didn’t hear what you just said, Iwas paying attention.” A weird smile came to his face. “I just couldn’t reallyhear over everything going on in my head. But…what?”

“Mate, I really like you,” Averey repeated. “A lot. I justwanted you to know.”

Cisco’s facial expression switched back and forth between abright smile, and apprehension. He let out a short, odd laugh. He scratched atthe back of his neck. “You know the last time I was told that by someone, mybrother started dating her.” He turned a second odd laugh into a cough. “Andthat’s not going to happen again. Hopefully.”

“Never,” Averey insisted. “Mate, your brother’s too, uh,cigar-and-robe-by-the-fire-y for me. No offense, yeah?”

“None taken,” Cisco replied. He let out a triumphant laugh, clappinghis hands together. “And he didn’t think he was so uptight. I seriously couldn’tunderstand how someone like him could—”

Averey slapped a hand over his mouth. “Would you shut up fora second, so I can tell you something?” Averey asked, staring into Cisco’seyes. Cisco’s eyes widened, and he rapidly nodded his head. “I don’t know what’sgoing to happen – I don’t know if Wells will get this over with or drag it outas long as possible but…” She swallowed thickly. “I don’t know how he plans tohave this all end, or if there’s any way, I can see us winning. And I don’tever really get mushy so…”

Upon finishing her sentence, she removed her hand from hismouth and pushed the elevator button back in. With a shudder, it started movingonce again. Neither of them said anything as they were brought closer andcloser to the Reverse-Flash. Averey shifted her weight from foot to foot,swallowing thickly – partly at the thought of facing the Reverse-Flash and noticingthat Cisco hadn’t said anything back.

Still, as the elevators doors opened, she rolled back hershoulders, and prepared herself to join Barry to face him head-on.

Cisco grabbed her hand before she had even cleared thethreshold of the elevator. She looked back at him over her shoulder. He gentlysqueezed her hand.

“I really like you, too,” he said.
