YALL. Addy Walker was the first American Girl doll I ever received when I was a little girl. (I have Samantha too) I misplaced my Addy doll but I still have Samantha. Addy meant so much to me because she looks like me. In the 90s, she was the only Black doll American Girl sold (they were selling maybe 10 dolls back then) so you can imagine my devastation when I read it was only a matter of time before they were archiving Addy. You KNOW my black behind ran up in American Girl Place to find her before they got rid of her, and she was the only old school doll still there! I wept maybe 5-7 times in the store. Things to do in NYC in Combination with Lunch at the American Girl Place

Tips for Planning a Once in a Lifetime day in NYC and a Visit to the American Girl Place and Cafe.

Prior to having two girls, I never would have imagined spending my hard earned cash and time at a store that is 3 stories of dolls, accessories, books, a doll hospital, a doll salon and even a cafe. Then I had two doll obsessed little brown daughters and discovered how limited the options are for our family to have dolls that resemble their mixed heritage. So, off I went with a giddy daughter (1 at the time of this trip, but we’ve been several more times with our youngest.) and her friends.The American Girl Place in NYC is located on 5th Avenue and 49th Street right in center of many of New York’s attractions. This makes it an ideal day trip with American Girl loving girls and their families. For those traveling with little brothers, a promise to the 5th Avenue Lego Store should encourage them to be a good trooper through the American Girl Place experience. 

We live in the suburbs and our kids rarely get to use public transportation. Thus, part of the excitement of this particular trip to NYC was taking the train from New Haven, CT to downtown Manhattan. One of my favorite memories. is watching the girl’s excitement as they sat on the train as the buildings went by while playing with their American Girl Dolls.

The American Girl Place in NYC is located on 5th Avenue and 49th Street right in the center of many of New York’s hottest attractions. This makes it an ideal day trip for American Girl loving girls and their families. For those traveling with little brothers, a promise to the 5th Avenue Lego Store should encourage them to be a good trooper through the American Girl Place experience. On this particular trip, we left the boys behind, but we’ve taken many trips into NYC as an entire family and my boys are usually troopers in the American Girl Store as they know that their time will come.

I was very pregnant during this trip and needed to use a clean bathroom, so we ventured into Tiffany and Co on 5th Avenue. The store employees thought that a dressed up group of girls and their dolls were adorable and gave them each a blue Tiffany bag for their dolls. My girls still play with this doll “accessory,”  By the way, you should note that I’m a complete public restroom snob and have a history of going into high end stores for bathroom breaks. Places like Nordstrom and Tiffany and Co have posh bathrooms, even when located in cities.

Additional things to do in NYC if time permits:

- Rockefeller Center: A few blocks away from American Girl Place is Rockefeller Center which offers visitors a variety of activities geared toward every family member. This NYC activity packs in a lot of opportunities for taking in all things Big Apple. You can go ice skating, see the famed Rockefeller Christmas tree and stop by 100′s of stores and various restaurants. While there, you must check out the Top of the Rock. Read reviews of Top of the Rock here prior to your visit.

This is one of my favorite pictures of us taken at the Top of the Rock. Notice the double baby wearing strategy. We took on NYC that day to see the Rockefeller Christmas Tree and traveled without a stroller. 

- St. Patrick’s Cathedral: If you take the train and subway into NYC, you will most likely walk past St. Patrick’s Cathedral on your way to the American Girl Place. Read reviews here to help make the most of your stop.

- The Lego Store: We’ve dragged our boys to the American Girl Place with a promise that we would stop at The Lego Store. This store ends up being a favorite stop for the entire family.

- Grand Central Terminal is a must do regardless of your mode of transportation to NYC.

- Central Park: Our kids love Central Park and thus we pit stop there, even when time is too tight for a leisure stroll. If you’ve never been, know that Central Park deserves a visit of it’s own, so don’t think that you will be able to see and experience it all on a day when you’re going to the American Girl Place.
