MANK part en tête d’une course aux Oscars bien bizarre

Je me suis réveillé tantôt, j'ai parti la cafetière, puis en checkant Twitter, je me suis dit: "Ah oui, c'est vrai, les nominations des Oscars ont été dévoilées." 

 C’est la première année depuis une éternité où je ne suis pas au poste au moment où les nominations des Oscars sont annoncées. Je l’ai déjà dit, mais je suis assez désinteressé cette année par cette course aux remises de prix où sont honorés des films que presque personne n’a pu voir sur grand écran, pandémie oblige. 

Oui, il y a d’excellents films en lice, comme Nomadland, Sound of Metal et Promising Young Woman. Il y en a aussi que je vais essayer de voir prochainement, Minari notamment. Mais je n’ai pas l’impression qu’il y ait de gros titres qui ont enflammé la planète cinéma comme par exemple Parasite, Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood ou même le divisif Joker l’an dernier.

J’ai vu Mank de David Fincher sur Netflix, j’ai trouvé ça correct, mais c’est loin d’être un film marquant pour moi. Je reviens quand même sur Nomadland, un de mes préférés de 2020 (même s’il ne sortira techniquement pas en salle au Québec avant avril 2021) - ce sera un bon moment de voir Chloé Zhao probablement remporter l’Oscar de la Meilleure réalisation. Il y a plein d’actrices et d’acteurs talentueux qui sont en nomination. Je serais content que Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross soient récompensés pour la musique de Soul. Je trouve ça plate que TENET de Christopher Nolan ait presque été complètement ignoré.

Mais dans l’ensemble, je suis assez indifférent face à tout ça. Je vais sûrement regarder le gala quand même, en espérant que ce ne soit pas un désastre avec des fenêtres Zoom comme les Golden Globes...

Adrien Mérigeau : “Ce qui m'intéresse c'est le mouvement du dessin”

Le festival Premiers Plans s’est déroulé à Angers du 17 au 26 janvier dernier. Zélie Gomez est allée à la rencontre des réalisateurs français de premiers courts-métrages. Adrien Mérigeau évoque son film “Genius Loci”, prix des bibliothécaires.

Peux-tu te présenter ? Je m’appelle Adrien Mérigeau, je suis Français j’ai grandi à Toulouse. J’ai étudié à l’EMCA (École des métiers du cinéma d'animation) à Angoulême, j’en suis sorti en 2004, j'ai travaillé ensuite en Irlande pendant 10 ans chez Cartoon Saloon, comme chef décor et directeur artistique sur deux longs métrages irlandais d'animation, j'y ai beaucoup appris. J'ai fait aussi plusieurs courts-métrages.

Peux-tu m’en dire plus sur ton court-métrage ? J’ai l’immense honneur d’être sélectionné en compétition avec mon court-métrage « Genius Loci » au festival Premiers Plans, c’est un film d’animation de seize minutes que j’ai fait à Kazak Productions. Mon producteur est Amaury Ovise. On a lancé l’idée il y a quatre ans à Paris.

Comment s’est passée la production de ton film ? J’ai travaillé longtemps en Irlande où j’ai fait un film. Et ensuite le producteur français, Amaury Ovise qui connaissait mon travail, m’a contacté, il a produit « Genius Loci ». Moi ça m’intéressait de retourner en France pour être dans ce milieu du cinéma qui est très fort. Et aussi pour découvrir ce que j’avais à dire en tant que réalisateur.

Quelles sont tes inspirations cinématographiques ? C'est surtout la musique contemporaine qui m'a inspiré. Pour rebondir sur la question précédente, le compositeur John Cage m'a beaucoup intéressé et a influencé la musique de mes parents aussi. Il dit que les sons n'ont pas besoin de dire quelque chose pour être fascinants ou pour qu'on les écoute. Même les sons de la ville peuvent être consid��rés comme de la musique. Ça m'a influencé parce que je voulais dessiner de telle manière qu'on puisse seulement observer le mouvement du dessin sans que ça veuille vraiment dire quelque chose, comme un dessin expérimental ou une animation expérimentale. Cette idée de considérer les choses qui bougent comme quelque chose de suffisant pour être intéressant à l'écran vient de l'écoute de la musique, surtout de la musique contemporaine.

Dans le graphisme, dans l'animation j'ai été très influencé par Youri Norstein qui est un réalisateur russe qui fait du papier découpé, c'est absolument magnifique, et des auteurs plus expérimentaux comme Steven Chilton. Dans le dessin j'ai été influencé par des artistes incroyables comme Gustav Klimt ou Egon Schiele qui ont une ligne, une manière de composer leurs images qui a un rap-port avec le folklore, le conte, les enluminures médiévales, tout en ayant un dessin très moderne, très humain.

Pourquoi fais-tu du cinéma ? C'est né du dessin. Au début, quand j'étais adolescent, je voulais faire de la bande dessinée. Je voulais continuer des études mais dans la bande dessinée à l'époque il n'y avait pas vraiment de structure. Ce qui s'en rapprochait le plus c'était une école d'animation, et en découvrant le mouvement, j'ai été vraiment passionné par la magie produite à l'image par un personnage qui bouge, vit et parle. Le mouvement et le son ont tellement ajouté à la magie de la création du dessin que c'est devenu très vite pour moi une passion.

Pour faire un film, il faut écrire un scénario, il faut trouver un producteur, il faut aussi défendre son film et le financer. Il faut jouer avec le format : court ou long métrage, mais moi, ce qui m'intéresse à la base c'est le mouvement du dessin... juste ça.

Peux-tu me raconter ton séjour au festival ? Ça se passe merveilleusement bien, on est hyper bien accueilli, c’est merveilleusement bien organisé. Par rapport à la programmation, elle est immense il y a tellement de rétrospectives, d’auteurs qui sont invités, des séances spéciales, des invités très connus. Et pourtant moi avec mon petit court-métrage je suis hyper bien accueilli j’ai l’occasion d’aller à beaucoup de séances, de rencontrer des gens.
