El libro 'La Calidad de Vida' fue publicado en 1996 como parte de la colección de Economía del Fondo de Cultura Económica. Este es una traducción por Roberto Reyes Mazzoni del original en inglés de 1993 ‘The Quality of Life’, publicado por la Oxford University Press y The United Nations University como parte de la colección Studies in Development Economics de WIDER (World Institute for Development Economics Research), que es un centro de investigación de The United Nations University que inició sus funciones en 1985 en Helsinki, Finlandia.

En la obra Martha Nussbaum y Amartya Sen recogen numerosos ensayos y comentarios a ellos provenientes de una conferencia que organizaron en WIDER en 1988. Como se señala en el Prólogo escrito por Lal Jawardena, el entonces director del centro, el propósito de aquel evento fue alentar el diálogo y la futura cooperación entre académicos de las disciplinas de la Economía y de la Filosofía para tratar el tema de la calidad de vida, que es del interés de ambas, con miras a producir resultados asimilables para quienes se encargan de tomar las grandes decisiones.

Por una parte, a nivel macro se critica la burda utilización del ingreso o PBI per capita como indicador del bienestar humano, pues también es importante considerar la distribución de la riqueza y la complejidad de evaluar diversas áreas de la vida humana. Por otra parte, a nivel micro se pone en entredicho que la maximización de la utilidad individual sea la manera más apropiada de medir la calidad de la vida de las personas, ante lo cual algunos optan por buscar una versión refinada del utilitarismo y otros por apartarse de él para poder enfocarse en medir otras cosas, como las capacidades de la gente, aquello que se es capaz de hacer y de ser en los diversos aspectos de la vida.

Estas ideas son desarrolladas a lo largo del libro en los diversos ensayos y comentarios, mas son presentadas nuevamente de manera panorámica en la introducción redactada por Nussbaum y Sen. En ella a propósito de un epígrafe extraído de la obra literaria 'Tiempos Difíciles' de Charles Dickens se llega rápidamente a la cuestión de cómo medir apropiadamente la calidad de vida. La pregunta central es la siguiente: ¿Cómo se determinan la prosperidad de una parte del mundo y la calidad de vida de sus habitantes? Para empezar, no basta solamente con saber de cuánto dinero se dispone, dado que también son importantes asuntos como cuán capaces son las personas para conducir sus vidas, cuál es su expectativa de vida, cómo es su salud, cuán buena es su educación, qué tan satisfactorio y digno es su trabajo y, en general, de qué libertades gozan como ciudadanas. Se necesita, pues, una descripción enriquecida de lo que las personas pueden hacer y ser en su día a día.

En la introducción, además, los compiladores, Nussbaum y Sen, dan un breve anticipo de las cuatro partes del libro: 'Vidas y Capacidades', 'Tradiciones, Relativismo y Objetividad', 'Las Vidas de las Mujeres y la Justicia Entre los Géneros' y 'Evaluación Política y Economía del Bienestar'. En la primera parte se busca cuáles podrían ser criterios adecuados para examinar la calidad de vida. En la segunda se explora qué normas elegir para evaluar diferentes partes del mundo, si unas locales o unas universales. La tercera trata sobre la calidad de la vida de las mujeres, que es un asunto particularmente apremiante en el mundo contemporáneo. La cuarta, por último, presenta relaciones entre la calidad de vida, la economía del bienestar y la formación de la política pública.

Salah Paham Identitas yang Membahayakan

Bedah buku “Kekerasan dan Identitas” karya Amartya Sen oleh Muhammad Alfisyahrin, alumni Sosiologi Fakultas Ilmu Sosial dan Ilmu Politik Universitas Indonesia.

Ilusi bahwa manusia hanya punya satu identitas tunggal dan pemilihan warga dunia secara simplistik ke dalam perabadan-peradaban seperti yang ditulis oleh Samuel P. Huntington dalam buku Benturan Antarperadaban (1996), menurut Amartya Sen dalam buku Kekerasan dan Identitas, adalah salah satu sumber kekacauan utama dari berbagai problem di dunia. Mulai dari konflik antar kelompok etnis sampai terorisme global yang menggunakan simbol Islam.

Sebagai seorang ekonom peraih Nobel Ekonomi yang juga banyak bicara soal kemanusiaan dan pernah menyaksikan secara langsung konflik sektarian di negara asalnya: India, perspektif Sen dalam buku berjudul Kekerasan dan Identitas (2016) tidak hanya otoritatif secara intelektual, tetapi juga sangat reflektif. Karena Sen tidak membahas sesuatu yang berada di luar sana. Sen membahas soal identitas. Soal kita.

Memahami Identitas

Kemajemukan bukan hanya terjadi antar kelompok sosial dan antar individu. Menurut Sen, setiap individu pada dasarnya juga selalu memiliki identitas yang majemuk. Hal ini berangkat dari afiliasi kita pada berbagai kelompok sosial. Saya misalnya adalah seorang warga negara Indonesia, beragama Islam, tumbuh besar di kota Jakarta, memiliki Ayah yang berasal dari Makassar dan Ibu yang berasal dari Minang, penyuka klub sepakbola AS Roma, bekerja di organisasi yang platformnya Hak Asasi Manusia, alumni Sosiologi FISIP UI, dan lain sebagainya. Dalam situasi sosial tertentu, saya memang harus memilih ketika ada dua atau lebih identitas dalam diri saya yang saling bersaing, walaupun dalam situasi sosial yang lain setiap identitas itu tidak saling bersaing. Meski dibatasi oleh lingkungan dan situasi sosial tertentu, selalu ada ruang bagi kita melakukan penalaran untuk menentukan derajat kepentingan relatif dari setiap identitas atau afiliasi kita pada kelompok sosial yang ada.

Menurut Sen, pandangan bahwa manusia hanya punya identitas tunggal adalah ilusi yang diciptakan oleh elit kelompok tertentu yang seringkali dijustifikasi oleh para intelektual. Identitas tidak sama dengan klasifikasi yang dipaksakan oleh orang lain terhadap diri kita. Tidak semua klasifikasi juga punya signifikansi sosial. Walaupun klasifikasi inilah yang seringkali menjadi dasar berbagai proyek penyeragaman melalui penanaman pandangan identitas tunggal. Dalam beberapa kesempatan, wujudnya agresif dan sangat jauh dari nilai-nilai kemanusiaan.

Identitas bukan pula sesuatu yang kodrati yang hanya perlu ditemukan. Pandangan seperti ini biasanya muncul dalam suatu kelompok yang punya kepentingan pelestarian budaya tertentu (misalnya kelompok suku-bangsa dan agama). Padahal dalam keterbatasan konteks budaya tertentu, selalu ada ruang sebenarnya bagi individu untuk melakukan penalaran dan memilih derajat kepentingan relatif dari budaya dalam komunitasnya. Lagipula, dalam banyak komunitas, budaya itu pun seringkali memiliki varian yang beragam.

Kesalahpahaman Memandang Identitas

Dalam buku ini, Sen juga mengkritik beberapa tesis atau anggapan yang berakar pada kesalahpahaman dalam memandang identitas, berikut ini adalah di antaranya:

1.      Benturan antara Peradaban, tesis dari Huntington yang tidak hanya menjadi rujukan bagi penerima manfaat dari risetnya (Pemerintah Amerika Serikat), tetapi juga militan bersimbol Islam. Keduanya sama-sama memandang bahwa peradaban dunia memang pasti akan berbenturan. Selain karena berangkat dari asumsi ketunggalan identitas, tesis Huntington juga dikritik oleh Sen karena serampangan melakukan karakterisasi. Misalnya memandang India sebagai peradaban Hindu, padahal India adalah negara dengan penduduk muslim terbesar ketiga di dunia. Atau pandangan bahwa demokrasi, hak asasi manusia, dan ilmu pengetahuan adalah nilai-nilai yang khas Barat dan pencapaian murni dari peradaban Barat.

2.      Memaksakan identitas muslim yang sejati dan moderat. Sen mengkritik upaya melahirkan identitas muslim yang sejati, moderat, toleran, dan pro-perdamaian dengan cara merangkul para ulama yang digunakan oleh negara-negara dalam memerangi terorisme yang menggunakan simbol Islam. Selain berpotensi menimbulkan arus balik ketika upaya tersebut justru dianggap mengganggu ajaran Islam yang esensi, cara tersebut juga berangkat pada pandangan bahwa seorang muslim hanya punya identitas sebagai seorang pemeluk agama Islam saja. Padahal banyak kiprah dan karya dari kaum muslim di bidang non-keagamaan yang tidak selalu lahir dari perwujudan identitas mereka sebagai seorang muslim. Upaya memerangi terorisme harusnya dilakukan dengan cara menguatkan identitas lain dari seorang muslim seperti identitas sebagai warga negara dan manusia global.

3.    �� Barat dan Anti-Barat. Sen juga mengkritik sikap kebanggaan atas peradaban Barat dan sebaliknya sikap anti-Barat yang berangkat dari pandangan bahwa ide-ide seperti kebebasan dan pembelaan terhadap nalar publik adalah eksklusif hanya berkembang di Barat. Pengagungan atas nilai-nilai Asia dan pemahaman bahwa sesuatu yang Islami itu pasti bertentangan dengan Barat adalah contoh dari kutub lain yang juga berangkat dari pandangan tersebut.

Sen mengajak kita untuk senantiasa menyadari dan memberikan ruang untuk penalaran dan kebebasan kebebasan berpikir pada diri kita dan menghindari pandangan fragmentis yang menjadi landasan berpikir dari berbagai tragedi berdarah dalam sejarah kemanusiaan: mulai dari Yahudi di Eropa, Suku Hutu dan Tutsi di Rwanda, Muslim di Bosnia, Warga Palestina, Etnis Rohingya, hingga orang-orang terkait PKI di Indonesia. Perlu ada inisiatif untuk terus mendorong keadilan global, bukan hanya soal ekonomi-politik, menurut Sen, tetapi juga soal rasa kebersamaan global. Sebuah identitas yang tidak akan menggusur kesetiaan kita pada berbagai identitas lainnya.

Amartya Sen’s *Identity And Violence* is probably one of the most thought-provoking and persuasive books I’ve read. . The general premise of his essay is to highlight the divisive and potentially incendiary effects that can transpire when we reduce an individual’s identity to a sole category, such as religion, nationality, language etc., instead of recognising, and celebrating, that individuals are defined by a plurality of affiliations. . In his concluding chapter, Amartya Sen neatly summarises how this illusion of singular identity easily serves the agendas of those with violent purposes: . “The advocacy of a unique identity for a violent purpose takes the form of separating out one identity for special focus, and it proceeds from there to eclipse the relevance of other associations and affiliations through selective emphasis and incitement... The specific identity that is separated out for special action is, in most cases, a genuine identity...: a Hutu *is* indeed a Hutu, a “Tamil tiger” is clearly a Tamil..., and a gentile German with a mind poisoned by Nazi philosophy is certainly a gentile German. What is done to turn that sense of self-understanding into a murderous instrument is (1) to ignore the relevance of all other affiliations and associations, and (2) to redefine the demands of the “sole” identity in a particularly belligerent form. This is where the nastiness as well as the conceptual confusions are made to creep in.” (p.176). . Sen, throughout this book, demonstrates how many of our social theories—even those working to tackle terrorism and violence—still fall into the trap of forcing people into singular identities, and how these theories are readily useable for “accentuating sectarian exclusion” and “warmly welcomed by leaders of social confrontation and violence.” The answer, Sen powerfully suggests, is to invoke the richness of the many identities that humans have. .
