Curious, what are your thoughts/opinions on Soma Cruz? I just finished Aria of Sorrow for maybe the third time and... man, it's so good. I just love Soma's story and the themes of light/darkness and good/evil in Aria and Dawn.
The Sorrow games are not games I think of much in terms of story, sadly 😅 I wasn't very impressed with the plot the first time I played them, although I always thought that Soma was... food for thought, I can say? Like, you can't help but wonder how much his past as Dracula influeces him, his thoughts, his memories, even his body (is he a complete human? does he have human traits?). He's said to be hard to approach in his bios, can we see that as glimpse of his past personality? His anachronistic fur coat is obviously meant to echo Mathias' clothes, how far does the influence stretch? But is it good to see Soma as Dracula 2.0 when he obviously wants to be Soma Cruz and no one else?
Sometimes I think about comparing the three "good Draculas" (Alucard, Soma, Hector) to see how they rejected Dracula as a status, as a mentality. But first I'd need to recheck the Sorrow games lol. maybe even check aos in japanese because something about the english script feels off to me
And one thing I remember about my first DoS playthrough was feeling bad for Soma who yes, he found many new friends, but they were also on edge about him because at any moment he could lose himself and become the Dark Lord. They trust him, but... well, you never know, you know? And the ending where he becomes the Dark Lord and he willingly gives up... :(
But yeah, speaking of light/darkness, AoS's cover is still my absolute favorite in the series:
Tumblr media
The stark white in direct juxtaposition with the black parts are striking. Soma looks like an angel even while surrounded by demons. I also noticed that the white dragon has bird wings... so it's Soma who looks like he has devil and angel wings. And in case I hadn't made it clear, the devil/angel wings contrast hits my brain like a sledgehammer <3

RE; Pin Badges
(posting this in response to @fismoll7secinv asking about my pin collection in their reply to this post!)
So I collect a good number of pin badges, and have done for a good few years now. I started with Disney park pins, but around lockdown I discovered the community of pin makers and it started to grow into fandom pins too!
Last year I shared my danmei pin board, which has a few of my selection (you can see that post here). The wangxian bunnies was a gift from my bestie (and the first MDZS pin I owned, I believe!), and she’d left me the shop card in the package for the maker, so that Boxing Day the shop had a sale and I brought the other baby pins you see there. You have Jiang Cheng, Lan Xichen, Wen Kexing, Zhou Zishu and Jiuxiao (RIP to him in the photo, the sun reflected on his face). I aim to buy Gu Xiang and immortal!Wenzhou from the shop at some point, but it hasn’t happened yet as my fandom spending has instead gone to purchasing danmei novels mainly :’) The wenzhou pin pictured was part of the Four Seasons zine, as were some of the stickers and postcards featured on this pinboard!
Recently, I’ve been pinning some of my newer pins to a pillow I was gifted. I don’t know if I’m going to keep them on there or eventually turn to embroidery hoops like I originally planned on doing when I have some spare time to get to our local Hobbycraft, but here’s a picture of what it currently looks like:
Tumblr media
The first is a pin of the dragon Elliot from Pete’s Dragon (the original Disney version, not the remake). I found him on shop disney and treated myself to him whilst a sale was on. The next three all come from my latest trip to America; the Japan and China pins are from EPCOT, and the spiced latte Mickey Mouse was just a cute little thing I found in one of the shops.
The next two in the line are my Bloodborne hunter and Greatwolf Sif pins, both of which were gifts from another friend for my 30th birthday last year (she also recently gifted me the wangxian bunnies you can see on the pillow for this Christmas just gone!). My other friend who gifted me the wangxian pin pictured on the pinboard also gifted me the next two pins for my birthday - Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji.
The next four pins were a very expensive but very necessary purchase I treated myself to last summer: the first is Alucard from the Castlevania games (animation too, I guess. Although this pin is very much his original design), and the other three are my Final Fantasy 7 boys: Zack, Cloud and Sephiroth. The seller for all these pins was so incredibly lovely too, and I’m definitely looking forward to buying from them again in the future at some point.
The little guy next to Sephiroth was from a blindbox of Cuphead pin badges. I brought a box on a whim and really wanted the devil pin, and lo and behold he turned up! :D Was very surprised and happy with that! And the last two pins were Christmas gifts from my parents: a blind box of the Disney 50th anniversary pins. They mainly brought them for me out of the hopes that I’d get my best boy, Figment, out of them but the stars were not aligned. However! I did get the lovely Orange Bird and Jamboree Bear, which I was really happy with as I adore them too.
Things I don’t currently have pictures for but know I have somewhere are a hell of a lot more Disney park pins, this Skeletor pride pin (gifted again by a friend), the 80th anniversary Fantasia Disney Store pin badge set (only one left to collect but I’m waiting on a seller to contact me back on that) and Shino’s wenzhou pin which will arrive ... hopefully in the next couple of months!

I had a lore dump written out and then it was gone, so here’s attempt no2 + some shots of the other side of his face. This is trimmed down and not all my thoughts. I’ll stick most of it under a read more because it’s a smidge more body horror of the eldritch tentacle variety.
In canon I believe Sylus started out as something, had something else inflicted on him, and then the addition of the aether core changed him some more. My intent with this design is that you shouldn’t be able to tell exactly what his original state should be because we’ve gotten CRUMBS on this guy so far. Of the handful of little things he’s given us, my brain has latched so hard on to his promise card where he didn’t want you to watch him dig bullets out of his arm because he didn’t want you to think he’s a monster??? What’s going on under your skin my dude??? Serial killer talk but I wanna know. He’s so confident in every other aspect of his being but he feels some amount of shame for what he is, and I think it’s because he’s some twisted broken thing lacking identity or kinship.
Due to his business model of (crime) gambling and making deals, I think he’s lacking a life/heart/mortality to lose because of a deal he made. It’s unclear if this was bad or good for him. I like the fallen angel theory but I don’t think he fell for the same reasons as Lucifer, I think it’s far more in character for him to have made a deal with a demon/a devil figure because he did not like the high authority he was under and wanted out, and not because he wanted to be king of the world. He doesn’t like authority in general, and for being a bad guy he doesn’t seem to punch down. He said he doesn’t like or dislike animals but the Disney princessesque things that keep happening to him say otherwise, I think he respects them a little more than most of the people he deals with to be honest. While I was typing this out the first time I was reminded of Alucard from Hellsing, as this powerful immortal being who finds mortality and mortals beautiful. He especially liked the ones with strength in some form, physical or in their resolve, will to live etc but animals just sort of exist. They lack those human flaws that seem to annoy Sylus (incompetence, cowardice, disloyalty, to name a few I’ve noticed) and remember that he doesn’t think of Mephisto as a pet. The way that he can seem to get animals apart from cats to just listen to him is. Interesting. I can argue he’s got some bird traits but a lot of them actually overlap with the dragon association so I think you guys get it. My additions are a little obscure and largely opinion as someone who owns both reptiles and birds lol
But back to his inability to die, my theory is a Davy Jones situation where his life exists somewhere but he doesn’t have it. Maybe he gave it to mc, or gave it up for her, but whatever it is I think he at least knows where it is. I can’t imagine someone like Sylus would be content with someone else possessing something so important, unless it’s mc of course.
I am a pretty firm believer that eternal beings always end up jaded and miserable. Sylus has built himself a lifestyle where he can acquire any material thing he likes, so I think he might be in the early stages of chasing any and everything that makes him happy. He’s not desperate for the serotonin yet but it’s only a matter of time. The addition of mc is a refreshing breath of that life he’s lacking into his existence.
On that note, this monster form I made for him is damaged/incomplete, and it’s asymmetrical and imperfect. Without a driving life force he’s crumbling, but since he can’t die he’s stuck. Whatever he is, it’s unnatural, neither life or death want him so he’s some in between thing. Leaning a bit more into that horror his body is broken, haphazardly kept together by his evol. Outside the crystalline wanderer claws and ruby veining he’s very dull, no shine in his eyes as if he’s an empty husk. BUT he’s got something sloshing around inside him, I just don’t think it’s blood and organs. His ridiculous heart rate is probably something else, something that’s only kind of good at mimicking a heart beat.
PERHAAPPSSs is the gross bubbling of viscous eldritch void soup and tentacles helping keep him the motor running. Again it’s only kind of good at pretending to be alive. He’s already pretty broken so he breaks himself up sometimes, on purpose.
Tumblr media
Like when he’s feeling bitey, or really wants someone to leave. Like for the few mentions of having a scarred past and being a monster I sure do hope he’s some genuinely beastly blighted looking thing. Maybe he really is a wanderer that caused the appearance of all the wanders in the world and that’s why he doesn’t want mc to know, but I’m not convinced. I feel like it’s gotta be worse than that. Infold can we have 1 memory that doesn’t take place in the present day
Tumblr media
My take on whatever is going on with Sylus, combining the demon/fallen angel and wanderer theories.

Alucard- Occult References
I’m putting my slideshow into text post format, so buckle up! It’s history lesson time!
Tumblr media
The “Cromwell Initiative” is most likely a reference to Oliver Cromwell, a leader of Parliament armies during the English Civil War during the 17th century. Despite being one of Britain’s most widely regarded controversial figures, he was chosen as one of the Ten Greatest Britons” in a 2002 BBC poll.
A legend surrounds Cromwell. It is said that on the eve of the Battle of Worcester, Cromwell snuck away from the camp and met the Devil in the woods. In exchange for 7 years of prosperity, he would give his soul. He died precisely seven years after. So, who in Hellsing Cromwell contract sold his soul? Alucard to Abraham for survival, or Abraham to Alucard in exchange for a lethal weapon he could wield and monetize?
Alchemy is referenced in the content of Alucard’s characterization as well. The quote inscribed on Alucard’s coffin (in Ultimate, it is written in its original Greek language) is translated as “The Bird of Hermes is my name/ Eating my wings to make me tame.” This quote is taken from the 15th century alchemical work known as the Ripley Scroll. While George Ripley is the suspected author and artist behind the scroll, the Hermes named is a reference to Hermes Trismegistus, a philosophy figure that was the product of merging the Greek god Hermes with Thoth, the Egyptian god of knowledge and wisdom.
The quote is taken from a part of the scroll that allegedly details the way to obtain the Philosopher’s Stone, a commonly sought after target by alchemists seeking power, immortality, and enlightenment.
The Left-Hand Path, which is one part of a dichotomy opposite the Right-Hand Path, focuses more on the elevation of the self through reaching one’s own potential, while rejecting religious authority and most commonly rejecting the notion of a higher power. Laveyan Satanism, Theistic Satanism, and Luciferianism are all Left-Hand Paths. We see references to Satanism in Alucard’s gestures, both in the inverted cross commonly (and widely mistakenly) associated with Satanism, and in the positions of his hands which match those of the iconic imagery of Baphomet.
Tumblr media
Speaking of his hands, let’s look at his gloves. Working from the outside in, we find Theban script, also known as the Witches’ Alphabet. Hirano’s Theban is poor, but we can make out enough to correct the script into what translates to “Hellsing”, “Hell’s Gate Arrested”, and “Shine Heaven Now”.
Tumblr media
Closest to Alucard’s wrist, we see a number of 812. Knowing Hirano, this could just be a random number but I think the number refers to Gematria, a Jewish alphanumeric code that assigns numeric value to words and phrases, originally meant for the Torah. My favorite phrase I found that has a Gematric value of 812 is “Lucifer Begotten Son”, which would fall in line with the byname “Dracula” translating to “Son of the Dragon/Devil”.
And then we have the sigil, all placed within a circle. The sigil itself is reminiscent of those belonging to Goetic demons, found in the Ars Goetia, a section of “The Lesser Key of Solomon”. In the Ars Goetia, the Goetic demons images, descriptions, and sigils are displayed. For example, here is Astaroth’s sigil.
Tumblr media
I think the way the sigil glows during the Cromwell Invocation means the sigil acts like a binding to Alucard as the sigils of the Goetic demons act to them.  The characters around the five-pointed star in Alucard’s sigil contain the alchemical symbols for Uranus and Neptune, representing the elements of Air and Water respectively, and stylized characters from other languages and cultures that represent the other three elements Fir, Earth, and Spirit.  And that’s all I can remember now, save for the references made in Stoker’s novel. I hope these are fun facts, because I have had fun picking up on them over the years.

Hellsing Commentary 8 Notes
This commentary is done by Taliesin Jaffe, the voice director and lead script adapter of Hellsing, and Crispin Freeman, the voice of Alucard. Direct quotes may vary in accuracy, as these are written down from audio without transcripts. I also didn't write down every joke or piece of trivia because I feel like people who watch the commentaries should get to have some nice surprises for stuff that isn't covered here.
-Taliesin notes that there's a lot of role-reversal in OVA 8. "Poor Anderson has to be the protagonist for, like, thirty minutes."
-Crispin is envious of the microphones Maxwell is using to broadcast.
-According to Crispin, the Vatican is flying American helicopters. "I mean, those look like Hueys to me." Taliesin agrees and says "They know quality and I think they'd feel a little awkward buying from the Israelis at this point."
-Upon commenting on a de-aged Walter, Crispin asks if he and the Captain "are a couple now?" Taliesin replies "That I imagine is implied. Well, that's what the internet told me. I went to this place called 4chan, and there's tons of manga pages of the two of them doing all sorts of terrible things."
-Taliesin's "half-assed" explanation for why Maxwell wants everyone in London dead is "Way back in the 1950s, Japan created a fantasy Europe in their manga, where...people lived in harmony and flowers were beautiful -in this fantasy Europe, I imagine, uh, they imagine that the- the separation of the church, when King Henry decided that he was going to have some divorces, um, sort've left a deeper scar, perhaps, in the actual Vatican than maybe it had. So this is, perhaps, the Vatican coming back to finally- the equivalent of England coming back to deal with the colonies once and for all, where we're finally weak enough that they can come back and claim the east coast. They're coming back in to, uh, remind England that they are Catholic."
-Crispin calls the Iscariot branch "very sort've Last Temptation of Christ, where Judas is the one who was the one who's willing to...take the black mark, for Jesus. How could Jesus become the savior if he was not sacrificed? and Judas is the one who said- eh, agreed to it. That's sort of the spin The Last Temptation of Christ puts on the whole story, that Judas is not evil, that in fact Judas is the one who made the necessary sacrifice, who's allowed to paint himself as the villain, in order to fulfill Jesus's savior."
-Taliesin has a big phobia of ghost ships and fish.
-Taliesin and Crispin talk about the three sides facing off, and when Crispin asks what he sees it as, Taliesin replies "Well, its- it's different attitudes towards the path to enlightenment, at this point. He's (the Major) going towards sacrifice, yeah, Max is pushing towards sacrificial magic, which the Nazis were really into, the whole theory that if you just- you just -enough bloodletting and you can get anywhere...It's the leech theory, it's one of the most interesting and ridiculous, uh, interpretations of the Ouroboros and the Bird of Hermes, and how sacrificial magic works. And then you've got the Catholics, who are not really- this is the interesting thing, is Maxwell is no longer really- Maxwell is going in for this power grab...Maxwell just sort've wants, uh, he's trying to grab power, and he's searching for his enlightenment through material gain. And...and Integra at this point, is just fighting for peace at this point. She is just trying to maintain her home. There's so little of them left, and all they have is just themselves, and they are sitting just for their own self-preservation. And its sort've the- I don't quite want to call it Buddhist, 'cause that's not quite right. But she's just trying to level the playing field at this point. And then we release the dragon, and once the dragon is there then we have St. George and the dragon for the rest of the episode."
-Taliesin also talks about the protagonist/antagonist roles in OVA 8, "The antagonist is imposing his will upon the story. That's your whole Act 2, is the antagonist saying 'I have a series of thoughts about the universe, and I am now going to impose them onto the universe. I am not reacting, I am to be reacted-to.' And your protagonist is your Act 3 character, and he's got a set of theories about the universe, of morals, o-or some sort of metaphor that he lives by, and he's going to live by it and see how that can affect what's going on. So he is, 'How do I react from the place that I believe towards what's going on, and how does that affect it?' So suddenly you're (Crispin/Alucard) the opposing force, and Anderson -who has now kinda abandoned the Catholics at this point, 'cause Maxwell has turned from the mission, his (Anderson's) imposed theory of the universe- now has to face you and has to react to your- to what you're doing to London."
-Alucard calling himself a dragon was "not a mistake," according to Taliesin: they wanted to paint Anderson "very uncomfortably, as Saint George -coming in to slay chaos, and slay the prime evil, and bring order back to the city. But he fails -as we'll all see- and he, he succumbs to his weaker instincts. He's a failed protagonist, which is why in the next episode we get to switch back- you have that moment, actually, which we will come to, where you go 'You're doing it wrong.'"
-Crispin questions whether or not Alucard actually ate horses when the cavalry familiars emerge.
-Crispin also comments on how "-it is interesting, because, you know, as we go later in this episode, Alucard keeps saying he's the dragon, and he's fighting this Christian knight, which is hilarious because historically Dracula was the Christian knight fighting the Sultan, he was fighting the forces of invading Islam, so it's sort of curious that he's now taken this demonic role."
-When discussing the waves of familiars engulfing the various fighters of London, Crispin brings up how awe-inspiring it is. "Where you talk about trying to make a piece of artwork that holds you in what James Joyce would call "aesthetic arrest," where the piece of artwork is so amazing you just go (gasp), and you just are sort of in this static place of aesthetic arrest. And many times that's accomplished through immense beauty, something so beautiful that you just look at it and you don't want it, or you don't dislike it, you just (gasp), you know? ...But the other way to do it, not beauty, is also what's called the sublime. And the sublime is when you're dealt with, you're dealing with something that's so huge, that's so powerful, that's so ego-destroying, that it obliterates your sense of yourself as an individual person, and you just kinda go- it's almost cosmic dread. There's this sort of awe, in the face of humongous power, or humongous destruction, or cosmic scale of things, that obliterates your personal ego, and you just go (extended gasp)...and sometimes in watching this, I go, 'I get it. They're trying to go for that notion of -we're just going to overwhelm you with this scale of destruction.' ...You're trying to go for that sense of sort of aesthetic arrest from this mass destruction."
-Taliesin agrees with Crispin and quotes a musician that "Beauty is the first glimpse of horror that we are just about able to bear."
-Taliesin calls Dracula "a much softer character" than Alucard and intends to reel in some of the voice effects on Crispin while he's in the armor.
-Taliesin has a friend who is an alchemist that he consulted with in regard to the Ripley Scroll.
-Apparently, Taliesin's Darby Bible wore out due to all the times he had to consult it when writing Hellsing.
-Anderson encouraging Alucard to hurry and come at him after his arm is partially shot off was meant to be a callback to Alucard encouraging Luke in OVA 2, "to really push the role-reversal."
-During the recording of Alucard and Anderson's fight, Taliesin and Crispin talked a lot about how Alucard was "trying to press a pre-recorded script on him, of how this is supposed to go."
-Taliesin builds on that during the commentary, saying "This is my theory: this is the script you (Alucard/Crispin) performed upon the Sultan, and then hundreds of years later, it just keeps having to be repeated -as, as the dead must. The whole point of being dead -and again, this is my wild speculations- is that you become- is that nothing new ever happens. And so this is very much, the script has to run its course, and that's sort of where your power comes from, is that this cycle of defeat and rebirth, and defeat and rebirth, and defeat and rebirth...which, in theory, is the whole point of enlightenment, is the Bird of Hermes, the Ouroboros, is the snake devouring its own tail." Crispin asks if the cycling is for Alucard's benefit or for other's, and Taliesin answers that "Alucard is wise enough to know that all is one and I think he's- on a certain level reached a particular type of enlightenment. And I think there's a part of him that understands that this is just circular and there is no beginning and there is no end, there is only the now."
-During the fight with Anderson, Crispin comments that Alucard eventually has the revelation that he's a coward, that he "admires those who are trying to defeat him, uh, he's got more respect for them than he does for himself. And it seems- it's almost like he wants their humanity to prove to him, he- he likes being defeated by those who have more humanity than he does. I wonder if it solves an argument for him in his head...Yeah, he wants to be the most- uh, the biggest dragon possible, because if he can be that powerful and still defeated by a human, then the human- the way of being human wins, and he'll be satisfied."
-Taliesin agrees with Crispin's assessment of Alucard's motivations and says "It is a vindication of the human soul. Which is where Anderson fucks everything up. (laughs) By rejecting humanity despite- supposing to be the champion of humanity while rejecting humanity, which...you can't do. It's actually- my god, I think we've finally hit a moral point in this show. Eight episodes in and we finally hit a moral point! My god! I think we've all learned something, finally!"
-On the topic of the Major saluting Iscariot and saying that they're struggling towards enlightenment together, Crispin states that "The philosophical core of what's going on here, is the idea that- it's a common trope in many- in much of storytelling that the difference between the hero and the villain, or the protagonist and antagonist, is that they're both two sides of the same coin. What's the difference between Batman and the Joker except that one's on our side and one isn't? Um...and so for him to say that everyone here is basically trying to go towards some sort of enlightenment, and whether you wanna do that through, uh, the paradigm of Christianity, whether you wanna do that through the paradigm of Nazism, or whether you wanna do that through the individual of Alucard, which I assume implies the paradigm of...his Cthulhu nature and everything else- that we're all gonna do this, not through beauty, but through the sublime. We're gonna do this through some sort of ego-obliteration."
-Taliesin agrees and says "I was trying to give Max (the Major) the same -and again in my, in the wonderful occult tomes that I have- the fundamental flaw in the occult philosophy of Nazism, which the Major is trying to point out, he's- I put the philosophy out there so we could see the fundamental flaw in it, which is- the theory being that the struggle is what its all about. And that enlightenment is that...is that birth is the endzone, if that makes sense. Coming at it from a more traditional occult sense, is that you have this very violent act, which gives birth to life, but the mistake that's made there is that the violent act is the end, is that that's where it ends, is that this is what we're all trying to do: create as much violence as possible so that we're all striving for the same thing...but that's not where enlightenment lies, because violence by itself is a...act of- the denial of higher powers of the universe. Violence by its very own nature, while sometimes it's something in nature and something that moves, it is by its very act, separating. It's not unifying, the act of imposing violence upon another person is self-mutilation in the eyes of an enlightened creature. And if you deny that that's self-mutilation, that you're trying to cut as much of yourself off as possible so that you have nothing left to think about other than you own enlightenment, that's false enlightenment."
-On a similar vein with the Bird of Hermes, Taliesin also talks about how "The Bird of Hermes is not consuming himself because he's trying to, you know, because he's trying to enact enough violence that he's got nothing left to think about, its- the metaphor is deeper than that. Its- he's consuming himself just because that much of himself is...uh, maintains growth, it's the passage of time that is the consumption of the wings, or the consumption of the snake (in the Ouroboros symbol). The head is not- the head is just perspective. The head is just the here and now, and it's to show you where the illusion lies. The head is an illusion. The Ouroboros is a circle, and the only reason the head is there is you can't see the circle when you're in it."
-Crispin also talks about "I think a lot of people look at Alucard and think he's so powerful, and he's not afraid of anything, but in fact, it is those who are most insecure who go for this kind of power. Those who are secure never need this kind of power over others. And that's, I think, what Alucard has probably learned over all these centuries he's existed, which is 'Oh my god, I went through- for all this power because I'm insecure. I would love it if a secure human would defeat me.'" Taliesin agrees with Crispin and says that that might be one of the reasons Alucard created Seras, "because she's such a wonderful mirror of his own internal insecurities, of her denial of self and her fear. And it's a way that he can project that onto someone else."
-Crispin explains that he didn't know about Seras's backstory until Ultimate, and says that she and Dracula share the same "kind of internal, emotional wound...and the two of them are sort of working from the same 'I was hurt, I feel powerless, and so a next step better than powerlessness is revenge, and anger. And so I'm gonna live in that place.' But I think, after spending a couple of centuries living in a place of anger and revenge, you realize there's more. And I think this...the 'sickness in his heart' is this idea that he's wounded. But he's not, he's as wounded as he wants to be." Taliesin brings up how that relates to Dracula's struggle for Mina's romantic feelings, and Crispin agrees, "Right, somehow Mina's gonna solve the problem, somehow something external is gonna solve the problem...So now of course the frustration that Alucard I think probably has, is that instead of having a human being who could defeat him, he now has a titan- so now we have two titans fighting, and that's gonna go on forever. It cannot- it does not resolve the emotional, uh, insecurity within Alucard. It does not resolve the emotional dissatisfaction within Alucard."
-Regarding Crispin's assessment of Alucard's feelings during the fight, Taliesin agrees and says "And if anything, it may bring him back, right back to that place he was when this all began, that feeling of weakness and powerlessness, which he's been running from for hundreds and hundreds of years." Crispin agrees and says "Which is probably on some level why he- it looks like he sort of gives up, at the end of this episode. That, in the middle of this he just sort've...ehh, you know, it's not like he hasn't been stabbed in the head by one of Anderson's blades before. But this time, it's like-" (Taliesin cuts in with "This is not Anderson anymore.") "-yeah, this is this other thing, and it's like, wow." Taliesin continues, adding that "This is his own denial coming right back at him."
-Taliesin has "fabulous plans" for Girlycard as of this commentary.

The Hellsing Ultimate commentary is so interesting. There is so much psychological, theological and philosophical discussion and analysis of the characters and series. I’ve transcribed a few parts I liked.
Commentary by Taliesin Jaffe (the english dub director/lead script writer) and Crispin Freeman (Alucard’s VA).
OVA 10 commentary below the cut. Some OVA 8 commentary highlights:
- Crispin claimed that historically, Dracula was the Christian knight fighting the Sultan and now he’s the Dragon fighting the Christian Knights.
This leads to a theory by Jaffe: Alucard’s first meal as a vampire was the Sultan. Like Seras made Pip her familiar by consuming him, the Sultan is influential on Alucard and lives there in him somewhere. He became the Dragon he defeated. [He made his abuser a part of himself, which leads to the question: by this logic, how much of alucard’s personality is the actual alucard?]
- commentary on that Dracula is a softer (!!) character than Alucard. Also that Dracula’s sword should totally be able to slice through Anderson’s bayonets. That’s how a real sword of that caliber works.
- Crispin compared Alucard and Anderson to the Joker and Batman. According to him: “The difference between the hero and the villain, or the protagonist and the antagonist, is that they are both the two sides of the same coin. What is the difference between the Batman and the Joker, except that one is on our side and one isn’t?”
- Crispin: “I think a lot of people look at Alucard and think he’s so powerful, and he’s not afraid of anything, but in fact it is those who are most insecure who go for this kind of power. Those who are secure never need this kind of power over others. [...] [Alucard’s like] I’m insecure, I would love it if a secure human would defeat me.” - Jaffe: “I think that’s actually one of the reasons why he created the Police Girl, why Seras exists is because she’s such a wonderful mirror of his own internal insecurity, of her denial of self and her fear, and it’s a way that he can project that onto someone else.” [they had an extensive discussion about this.]
- Jaffe, after Crispin mentioned that Seras and Alucard come from the same place of emotional wounds due to similar trauma in their backstories: “And there was this whole struggle for Mina, in the original Dracula. [...] Maybe that wound can be repaired from outside himself.”
Crispin: “Right. Somehow Mina’s gonna solve the problem. [...]”
Jaffe: “Dating never solves the problem. You’d think that in a couple of hundred years you would learn that - ” [Crispin chimes in] - “Dating never solves the problem.” [laughter]
Crispin has discussed before that Alucard, at his core, is/was a coward and he chose the coward’s way out by making a deal with the devil in the first place. That is why he detests cowardice in others because he recognizes it in himself. He didn’t choose to stay human, he took the “easy way out” and that’s where some of his self-hatred stems from, according to Crispin.
They had an extensive theological discussion regarding Hellsing, symbolism, the bird of Hermes, Alucard and Anderson. Also about the characters’ ways of finding enlightenment through different means - including Alucard’s own ways of finding enlightenment.
- Crispin remarked upon the many things leaving Alucard’s body during the battle: “Really, he was dining on horses?"
- Laughing at Enrico Maxwell being so Extra in his entrance.
OVA 10 commentary highlights:
- Jaffe & one of the producers discussing Seras and Alucard’s bond:
“A big part of what the show is about is Dracula recognizing himself in someone else who has a similar origin.” [...] “He found someone stronger than him and made her into a vampire.”
- Discussion about the Peter Pan references that were in the gonzo anime, and that Alucard’s return could be interpreted as Peter returning to Wendy’s window [In the the gonzo anime, Seras is referred to as Tiger Lily while Integra is Wendy and Alucard is Peter Pan, an interesting take on their dynamic.] - Jaffe and the producer talking about their conviction that Integra does choose to become a vampire in the end. She has been “saving herself” for the moment when it was appropriate to transition to immortality, and if not when Alucard returns and she is aging away from her family, when?
I might transcribe some commentary from other episodes too, if anyone’s interested.

Castlevania: New Blood trailer
A trailer for a live-action Castlevania movie, released today in honor of the series’ 35th anniversary.
If anyone has any ideas for casting, feel free to speak up.
Recommended listening: -Vampire Killer -Divine Bloodlines -Nothing to Lose
(Open on 22-year-old reporter Colette Whitmore arriving in Amsterdam for her first international assignment. Accompanying her as she disembarks from the plane is cameraman Javier Guerra.)
Javier: Why’d you want to come here so bad?
(Shot of Colette on a balcony, staring at the distant form of a castle.)
Colette (v/o): Something...drew me here. I can’t quite explain it.
(Cut to Colette and Javier on a bus. The passenger beside them is reading a newspaper, with the headline reading “Has the Mystery Castle Appeared Before?” Cut to Sophie Ziegler, a teenage girl who looks much like a female version of Richter Belmont, sitting on her bed with a black-shelled turtle, a blue-scaled dragon, a red-feathered bird, and a white-furred cat, each small enough to be mistaken for a stuffed animal. As the cat crawls into her lap, she turns to stare out her bedroom window.)
Sophie: Maria...it’s happening again.
(Konami logo appears. Cut to Colette and a young Brit named Adam Redgrave in a hotel buffet room, watching a news report about people dying in what look like animal attacks.)
Adam: There are other Belmonts out there...
(Shot of Colette holding the Vampire Killer with a look of awe. Cut back to Colette and Adam.)
Adam: ...but fate has decreed that this is your time.
(Shot of Colette, Javier, Sophie, and Adam approaching the entrance to Dracula’s Castle. Cut to the inside of the first floor hallway as the door creaks open. Shots of the quartet fighting various enemies. Cut to Death watching from a balcony as Adam helps an injured Javier to his feet.)
Death: Dracula was freed from the cycle years ago...
(Cut to the quartet in a room full of portraits. Colette and Javier are looking at paintings of Simon, Richter, Trevor, and Julius, Sophie gently strokes a painting of Maria with a mournful expression, and Adam inspects a painting of Soma Cruz and Alucard. Cut to Death floating through the castle halls.)
Death: ...so why does the castle still keep returning?
(Shot of Adam conjuring a sphere of lightning and holding it aloft. It releases smaller bolts of electricity that shoot off like fireworks and hit the mummies advancing toward him. Shot of Sophie and the four small animals from earlier. She gestures, and they grow larger, transforming into avatars of the Four Symbols. Shot of Javier on his hands and knees as a beam of moonlight shines down on him. He starts to grow larger and change form, shirt and shoes being torn apart. As the change completes, the new werewolf rises to his feet and howls. Cut to Colette standing face to face with Medusa. An aura of confidence emanates from Colette as she draws and brandishes the Vampire Killer.)
Colette: I...am...a Belmont!
(She lashes out with the whip, striking Medusa with enough force to knock her to the floor. As she gets up, hissing angrily, Colette smirks and cracks the whip. Cut to title card.)
Castlevania: New Blood
(Shot of Carmilla inspecting a set of photographs, including one of Sophia. Across from her, Laura lays out several hand-painted cards, each depicting a past wielder of the Vampire Killer, in a line on the floor. Carmilla kneels and begins setting the photos across from the cards. The camera zooms in on Sophie’s photo, paired with the card featuring Richter Belmont.)

Headcanons for Mika
Was born to a poor factory workers in Moscow, who gave him and his younger sister Irina up when they lost their jobs because they could not afford to feed them
Went to work in the czarist court as servants. Saw first hand the corruption of the czarist court and ended up joining the precursors to the Revolution.
Met Ales (passing as Rasputin) during this time. Mika and Irina would give Ales blood in exchange for help with performing riskier underground activities. Eventually one of these activities went very wrong, and led to Mika and his sister becoming Ales’s thralls
Mika goes with Ales everywhere and acts as his bodyguard, personal assistant, healer. Is extremely dedicated to and protective of Ales, Ales’s kids, and Irina
A true believer of the Fae faith, often overzealous in his execution of Ales’s instructions, which can get him in trouble
Kind of a himbo and definitely a ladies’ man. Loves to flatter. Life of the party like his Master. Ends up being Seras’s love interest.
Not a huge fan of Alucard because of his hostile attitude towards Ales, but learns to tolerate him out of respect for Seras
He loves to sing, especially sea shanties, often embarrassingly loud
Still retains his revolutionary spirit and teams up with Seras to fight for better rights for thralls
Hates that damn bird Sunny but doesn’t say anything because Ales is so fond of it
Brags about knowing how to ride a dragon to impress women, but he only ever did it once

Fic Writer Meme
I was tagged by @in-arlathan @inquisitoracorn @elveny, @noire-pandora and @nug-juggler, thank you so much friends! I have already answered some of the questions in a previous fic writer meme, so I will link the original post for those.
Name: Johaerys, but you can call me Jo for short!
Fandoms: Currently, Dragon Age, The Song of Achilles and Castlevania.
Most popular one shots: Nothing But Himself, an angsty/smutty/feelsy Trevor x Sypha Castlevania oneshot.
Most popular multichapter: Going by kudos, my Dorian/Trevelyan DAI long fic A World With You, although my Patrochilles fic High-Flying Birds is getting pretty darn close.
Actual worst part of writing: Editing!! It's such a long, laborious process for me because I like nitpicking every small thing and making my life difficult. Sometimes it's easier than others, and there have been the rare occasions where I hardly needed to edit at all, but usually it takes me from a couple hours to actual days. The thought of editing a fic in order to publish it has often stopped me from even starting to write it, lol!! I guess that's a good thing because I only ever write the stuff I absolutely love and have to write, but also there are so many ideas floating around in my head that could have been written I guess, but I just. Hate. Editing. 😂
How you choose your titles: answered here!
Do you outline: also answered here
Ideas I probably won't get around to, but wouldn't it be nice? So many. Soooo many. I would love to write something with my f!Amell Warden and Leliana at some point because I really love them, but it's pretty far down my to-write list atm. Another idea that's pretty far down my to-write list but is definitely getting written eventually is a Trevor Belmont x Alucard Beauty and the Beast!AU that has been kicking around in my head for ages and no, I will not be taking questions at this time, thank you *puts on sunglasses and walks away from explosion in slow-mo*
Callouts @ me: Stop worrying about making it perfect and just WRITE THE DAMN THING
Best writing traits: Oooh, good question. I'll go with what I enjoy writing the most, which is descriptions, sensory details and introspection. I also love love LOVE writing fight scenes, they're so relaxing but they also give me a sort of rush, I can't explain it. They're just immensely fun, that's all.
Spicy tangential opinion: I... don't think I have any spicy opinions to offer at the moment. Or rather, I have way too many, but what I'll say instead is this: It's okay to write self-indulgent stuff. It's okay for you to be your primary target audience. It's okay to use writing to work through difficult situations in your life. It's okay for a scene to not serve any particular purpose, other than the fact that it means something to you and you enjoyed writing it. We're all different and express ourselves in different ways. Bottomline: writing is a very personal and solitary activity, and it should be fun, first and foremost. If it stops being fun for a time, it's also perfectly okay to take breaks and look after yourself and your mental health. Your story will still be there when you feel ready for it.
Also: I hope you're all well and safe, and that 2021 has been gentle with you so far ❤
I think many people have done this already but I will still tag @pinkfadespirit @pikapeppa  @solas-disapproves, @midnightprelude, @tevivinter, @serial-chillr, @faerieavalon, @kemvee, @fancytrinkets @aymayzing @tessa1972, @fandomn00blr, @kirkwallgremlin and anyone else who would like to do this! Also no pressure at all, just think of it as me thinking of you and saying hi!

Maria Unleashes her Strength!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Alhough she was one of four girls kidnapped by the Dark Priest Shaft for a ritual to resurrect the nefarious Dracula, Maria Reneard proves to be a valuable ally in Richter’s crusade to save her friends and his girlfriend Annette once rescued. A girl from another family of Vampire Hunters distantly related to the Belmont clan, Maria has a natural affinity with the abilities of animals and acrobatic movements. She may be frailer than Richter, but her speed, striking power, and maneuverability will prove to be the perfect way to style on opponents as either a small anime girl in a pink dress or a confident young vampire hunting woman. Your call, really, but underestimating her either way will cost you dearly. (Requested by @spooner-the-trinity)
Of course, Maria Renard was only playable in a few games, but I happen to love all those games, and the programmers were gracious enough to give her plenty of techniques and abilities to work with. Her techniques are derived from her original appearance in Rondo of Blood for the PC Engine, the Sega Saturn version of Symphony of the Night, and the PSP Dracula X Chronicles’ remakes of both games.  Eh? “Judgment”? The hell are you talking about? H-hey, are you trying to make a dumbass outta me!? You bastard, there ain’t no such thing as a Nintendo Wii fighting game released on November 18th, 2008 based on the Castlevania series that had mostly controversial character designs by the artist of Death Note with particularly infamous examples including Buff Light Yagami. And there is c-e-r-t-a-I-n-l-y no incarnation of Maria Renard based on my least favorite character from that series that had all the good of Maria chucked thrown out of the window for this bastardization who obsesses over the figures of the other female characters, making me feel like I just gave up my triple-shot Holy Water for a Dagger that I will then proceed to hack my own head off with and throw at Konami with my post-mortem spasms. And even if there was such a game as this “Castlevania Judgment”, the only good character in it would be Aeon, who has always existed since always and till forever independent of this hypothetical game, thank you very much.
Hrmm-hrmm... anyways...
Jab: Maria sends forth a Dove or Owl that travels a fair distance. Pressing the button mid-flight will have Maria kick in front of her. There’s a 50/50 chance of either bird spawning, but there’s a minuscule difference in damage and speed between them.
Dash-Attack: Maria performs a dashing Drop Kick that can strike short-hopping opponents out of the air if well timed.
F-Tilt: Maria sets loose one of her Cats. It’ll run until it trips up an opponent by clawing their ankles, is knocked away by an attack or it disappears at the edge of the stage.
D-Tilt: Maria encases herself in a rock shell that damages opponents as it is form, which then has a Turtle land on top of it. In this state that lasts for a couple seconds, Maria is resistant to damage, but will be unable to move.
U-Tilt: Maria sends up two Cardinals at a... let’s say, 50-degree angle. They loop back to her after reaching about double her height.
N-Air: Maria does a rolling attack mid-air. Weak and has a small window of damage on its own, but if it hits an opponent, Maria will launch an Energy Ball that hits for big damage.
F-Air: Maria calls forth a Dragon, and holds onto its back as it glides into opponents with its immense weight. It’s slow, but can be quite powerful at the right time.
B-Air: Maria kicks behind her to knock away fighters getting too close.
D-Air: Maria rockets down from the sky in a Jump Kick, spiking opponents.
Side Smash: Maria uses the Sega Saturn version of her Guardian Knuckle attack, a magically charged punch.
Up Smash: Maria gains two flaming wings out of her back that resemble those of the Vermillion Bird Suzaku.
Down Smash: Maria calls upon the Black Tortoise Genbu as it spins around Gamera-style to attack enemies in front of and behind her in a circle.
Neutral B: One Maria's standard attacks in the Sega Saturn version of Symphony of the Night is an Energy Ball which can be charged for up to four levels. This is a very standard Smash Bros. Special, with a whole 4 levels of charge.
Side B: Maria rides the White Tiger Byakko for a short distance, running over enemies as it claws those caught in its path. Dismounting Byakko by jumping with give her a lot of height as it lets out a breath of fire, but be careful! If Maria is knocked off from above, Byakko will just disappear!
Up B: Maria is carried in the talons of the Vermillion Sparrow Suzaku as it rains down fire on opponents below. It may be slower than her standard jumps, but the protection Maria has in its grasp can be very much worth the trade-off.
Down B: Maria calls upon the Azure Dragon Seiryu, who surrounds her in a ring as it chases its own tail to defend her. Tilting the stick while it’s being summoned can have the dragon move to circle in a fixed location either next to or above Maria.
Shield: Maria uses the shell of the Black Tortoise Genbu as a shield that’s... surprisingly quite sturdy against many forms of damage. A perfect shield can outright nullify plenty of low-to-mid power Smash attacks. You can also Dodge using a famous Symphony of the Night-style backdash or a forward roll.
Grab/Pummel: Maria summons a Dragon to grapple the opponent in a bear hug. By pressing the button, the dragon squeezes them.
Back Throw: The Dragon spins around and throws the opponent far behind Maria.
Forward Throw: Genbu appears as the dragon tosses the opponent to the side, whirling the opponent before sending them flying.
Down Throw: The Dragon leans forward and crashes on top of the opponent’s back, causing heavy damage.
Up Throw: The Dragon rises up with the opponent in tow, before slamming them down into the ground, sending them ricocheting back upwards.
Bomb: Maria summons a shadow-like vision of herself that pummels the enemy for her. This Guardian Knuckle is invincible and has incredible attacking speed on top of excellent damage, but its range is quite middling. This is the Rondo of Blood and Dracula X Chronicles Symphony of the Night version of the Guardian Knuckle attack, but it also takes on a minor health drain effect like in her appearance in Portrait of Ruin.
Final Smash: Maria summons all four Holy Beasts at once to gain a state of invincibility and highly enhanced stats for a 10 second duration. After this duration, the beasts charge forward in front of her as they strike opponents with their powerful attacks.
Taunts:
-Up Taunt: Maria holds up a Key and seems to charge up an Item Crash, but pulls it back down, looking perplexed.
-Side Taunt: Maria holds out an egg as a nest’s worth of birds hatch from it and fly away. If they hit an opponent, they will receive 0.1% of damage with minimal knockback.
-Down Taunt: Maria hums a short ditty (a few notes from Bloody Tears, Opus 13 from Rondo of Blood, or The Tragic Prince from Symphony of The Night) as a series of multi-colored music notes appear.
Victory Screen:
Rondo of Blood Maria:
-Maria catches a falling Richter doll, gaining a 1-Up as she holds her Guardian Knuckle Doll in her other arm.
-Maria frolicks about the area and smiles at the camera as her animal friends gather around her.
-Maria celebrates as she sits down on a Magic Jewel, feasting on a Parfait as her Cat watches on.
Symphony of the Night Maria:
-Maria relaxes in front of a Save Polyhedron that’s just... there.
-Maria tries on the Holy Glasses, before removing them with a smile. Ghostly projections of the Four Sacred Beasts are seen around her as the glasses are removed.
-Maria slumps down in a chair, and is given a Heart Vessel that soon disppears as the “Life Up” text appears.
Alt Costumes:
You are free to choose between her original Rondo of Blood design or her older self from Symphony of the Night at your leisure. The former has a couple extra palletes based on the original PC-Engine designs of Iris, Tera, and Annette, while the latter has a couple based on Succubus and Alucard. Or, if you are as fond of the design as I am, you can play as her in her Dracula X Chronicles redesign, which has her use older Maria’s win screens.

She will always have a special place in my heart
Three fictional male characters with good ethics and morals I believe deserve more recognition: Bob Belcher (Bob’s Burgers), Peeta Mellark (The Hunger Games) I just got done watching the movie on tv so he’s fresh in my mind, and Fezco (Euphoria) I know he sells drugs and all which isn’t cool but he generally does care about his friends and looks out for them and does everything he can to take care of his family and skjflsjfdlhj

Acheron: The River of Woe in the Greek underworld.
Achlys: Greek primordial goddess of poison, misery, and sadness, personification of the death-mist.
Adonis: Means "lord" (as in Adonai). In Greek mythology, the most beautiful youth in the world, loved by both Persephone and Aphrodite. Died tragically.
Adrian/Adrienne: English, from Latin; means "from Hadria" (the Adriatic Sea). I've heard sources saying it means "dark one," but I haven't been able to confirm this. It's still a really cool, kind of gothy name. (Also the real name of Alucard from Castlevania.)
Ahriman: The Zoroastrian devil/evil god.
Akeldama: Means "field of blood," a place in Jerusalem associated with Judas.
Alastor: Greek, means "avenging spirit."
Alcmene: (Female) Means "might of the moon," Heracles' mother in mythology.
Alecto: One of the Erinyes (Furies), the goddesses of vengeance. Means "unceasing."

Artemis/Diana: Greco-Roman goddess of the hunt, the moon, and virginity
Asmodeus: Means "wrath-demon," a Goetic demon appearing in a number of texts, representing luxury, sensuality, and lust. (Also Asmodai)
Asphodel: A white flower planted on graves, said to grow in the Greek underworld, and therefore heavily connected with death.
Astaroth: (Unisex) A demon in the Ars Goetia (from the Lesser Key of Solomon), described as a male demon and a Duke of Hell, but the name likely comes from the Phoenician goddess Astarte (or Ashtoreth), who is a version of Ishtar (Babylonian) and Inanna (Sumerian).
Astor: A French and German name from Occitan, meaning "goshawk." A goshawk is a bird of prey. I've read on naming sites that this name was originally a derogatory term for young men with hawk-like, predatory characteristics, but I haven't found anything to confirm this. This is the name of my alter-ego and one of the main protagonists of Shadowbook.
Astra/Astrid/Asteria: From Greek, "star." In Greek mythology, Asteria was a Titaness of astrology and prophecy, the mother of Hecate. An aster is also a star-shaped flower.
Atropos: The last of the Moirai (Fates), who cuts the thread at the end of life.
Autumn: The darkening part of the year, when everything is dying, and Halloween happens.
Azrael: The name of the Angel of Death, means "whom god helps." (Also Asriel)
Azazel: A Watcher's name, means "scapegoat." Taught humanity the arts of weaponry and cosmetics. Commonly associated with demons and evil.
Baphomet: A goat-headed, winged deity associated with Satanism; obscure etymology.

Bram/Brom: Technically short for Abraham ("father of a multitude"), the author of Dracula, Abraham "Bram" Stoker.
Bran: Welsh, "raven." The name of Bran the Blessed, a giant and king of Britain in Welsh mythology.
Branwen: (Female) Welsh, means "white raven" or "fair raven."
Breksta: Lithuanian goddess of night, dreams, and twilight.
Caligo: Latin word for “mist,” “gloom,” and “darkness.” (Calignes is the plural, which could also work) (feminine)
Calypso: Greek, "she who conceals." The nymph who kept Odysseus imprisoned on her island.
Carmilla: A lesbian vampire from the gothic novel of the same name, predating Dracula. The name seems to have been invented by the author.
Cassius: Roman, "empty, hollow."
Ceridwen: Welsh enchantress or goddess who stirs the cauldron of poetic inspiration.
Cernunnos: Celtic forest god depicted as having a stag's antlers.
Chiroptera: Literally means "hand wing," the order of bats in taxonomy.
Circe: Means "circle." In Greek mythology, a sorceress who turned Odysseus' men into pigs (and later helped them).
Cora: From the Greek name Kore, meaning "maiden." A name for Persephone. (Also, Coraline.)
Cornix: A princess transformed into a crow by Athena in Ovid's Metamorphosis.
