can i request little reader and mommy wanda, and they go to a park and little misbehaves and acts like a brat and gets a punishment for being a brat (this is the longest red light ever)
âŠHATE ME?
PAIRINGS: Wanda Maximoff x reader
WORD COUNT: 1065
WARNINGS: angst, little reader, mommy!Wanda, silent treatments, Wanda feels down because of R, R also feels down bc of Wanda, not spell checked tbh, think thatâs abt it :)
NO ONE IS PERMITTED TO STEAL, COPY, OR REBLOG MY WORK AS THEIR OWN!!
Your lip jittered as you whimpered, your pleads going silenced to the older woman. She sat on the couch with a book in her hands, her reading glasses perched on her nose as she flipped each page without digesting it entirely, but you didnât need to know that.
âMommy, âm sorry!â You felt tears pooling at your eyes and huddled your stuffie closer to your chest before rushing upstairs to your room. You closed the door behind you and removed every blanket and pillow from her side of the bed before placing your stuffed animals in the now unoccupied area. It was a rule of hers to not have toys on the bed, and if you did, it was only one or two that you slept with alongside her. Other than that, they were saved for play time only.
You huffed angrily and closed your eyes, intending on falling asleep until that came to a short fail. You couldnât stop recalling the previous activities that led to this moment that had guilt gnawing at your heart.
âBaby, not today, okay? Itâs too chilly for ice cream right now, and youâre already freezing!â She exclaimed her words with a rub to your arms that filled with goosebumps from the chilled wind. You glared at her after your pleading eyes did not work the way you wished, and she exaggerated a pout in return.
âThatâs not fair! I wanâ ice cream!â Your hands balled into fists and your nostrils flared, your angered expression making Wanda audibly aww.
âMy little cutie! Why donât we just head home, lay down, watch a movie.â She dragged out, hoping it would bring back your excitement and tempt you into giving up.
âNo, I donâ wanna go home until I have ice cream!â She sighed, annoyed that her suggestion did not work and you were still upset.
âLook, I said no ice cream, alright? Just be a good girl and listen to mommy, yeah?â She knew you always fell for the title, but there was something so strong about this truck that was now leaving that had it blanking your mind.
âNo fair! I hate you, mommy!â You saw her facial expressions shift as her eyes widened with slight red behind them. You felt the hand that had been holding your wrist tighten, and her head titled to the side menacingly.
âYou want to repeat that word for me?â You had come to realize your mistake and cowered down, gulping as you struggled to form a coherent sentence or thought.
âIâŠI didnâ mean it-â
âYou didnât mean it? So you didnât mean to say you oh so proudly just how much you hate me? You said it, didnât you? Fucking shit,â She mumbled the curses under her breath. âAnd here I thought I had trained my little girl well.â
âNo, you did, mommy! I swear, you did! I didnât mean to say it, I really, really didnât.â She shook her head disapprovingly, guiding you to the car quickly as you struggled to follow behind her.
âHurts, mommy.â You mumbled in hopes sheâd listen, but that came to a quick end when you were pushed into the backseat.
âIâm sorry, mommy, I really didnât mean it.â She ignored you the rest of the ride, her fingers tapping on the steering wheel and slightly filling the tense silence. You knew you were done for when you got home.
You heard the door close behind the woman as you refused to turn and look at her, knowing deep down it was all you wished for. You squeezed your eyes even tighter and pretended to be asleep, although Wanda knew you werenât. She walked to the closet and sorted through a selection of clothes aimlessly.
âMommy?â You eventually gave in, and Wanda did not turn to look in your direction.
âPlease stop ignoring me! Itâs hurtinâ my feelings,â You chewed your lip and rubbed your legs together for the warmth she did not supply.
âOh, it hurts your feelings?â She asked, and that was the first time she had spoken in what felt like years. You sat up now, bringing your knees to your chest and wrapping your arms around them.
âMhm.â
âBecause it really hurt mommyâs feelings when you said you hated her, but that doesnât matter?â You looked down in shame and she hummed, now stepping out of the small room and walking closer to your proximity.
âNow, I know you were upset that you werenât getting what you wanted, but that gives you absolutely no right to be mean and say such horrible things to mommy.â
âI know, Iâm sorry.â You spoke lowly, your voice full of shame. She crossed her arms over her chest and placed a knee on the bed that was filled with your toys, but she didnât seem to notice or care at the moment.
âI know you are, but that doesnât change what you did.â You shook your head in agreement with her words.
âI- I was upset and I really wanted ice cream but I was really, really mean to mommy and I didnât mean to, and âm really, really, really sorry.â She didnât respond and you worried she didnât forgive you. You were about to plead her once more before she stood and began walking to your side of the bed where you sat so anguished. She then placed herself in front of you and put her hands on your knees before leaning in to place a kiss on your forehead.
âI know you are, baby.â
âYou forgive me?â
âNot exactly, but Iâm not mad at you anymore.â A smile began to grow on your face and she pinched your cheeks at the sight.
âDoes that mean you wonâ ignore me now?â
âI wonât ignore you anymore, my love.â
âAnd does that mean we can have ice crea-â
âWoah, woah, woah, I think weâre getting a bit too far now.â You giggled and she followed before scooting your stuffies to the side and making space for her own body to fit. She pulled you in closer and placed a kiss on your lips this time, sighing into it as she wrapped her arm around your body. She knew you could never hate her, and she knew she could never hate moments like this even if it meant she had to live out what led to it.

my friend and i were talking abt young justice and we kind of realised that like. young justice is probably one of the smartest hero teams, full stop, maybe THE smartest considering their age.
like tim is pretty well known for being a really good detective, he figured out batman's secret identity and everything, but the others are also really smart and in a vast array of areas.
i'm just gonna go through bart, kon, cassie, anita, cissie and greta because i can't remember much about ray or slobo it's been a while since i read the comics. although if i remember right slobo is like an engineer
bart canonically remembers EVERYTHING he reads, and he did that whole thing where he read every book in the san francisco library in teen titans, and also he's from the fucking future. he's really book smart, even if he might not always be able to apply that stuff to irl situations
kon was both made in a lab and stuffed full of information. he's got lab smarts man!!! a head full of random chemical compositions and punnet squares
cassie and anita don't really have any specific areas that they would specialise in that i can remember. cissie and anita probably BOTH have a fairly good amount of medical knowledge though, like anita saved cassie's life and cissie was competent enough to be sent to space on those like relief mission things. also anita probably knows a fair amount of more magical stuff due to her powers
cissie also got into a fairly good girls private school, and her mother probably trained her in a lot of areas. i'd guess especially that she knows a lot about marketing, legalities around vigilantes, etc, etc
greta would be a really good source of information on magic. after discovering her powers more and figuring out what and who she is i think she'd have taught herself a lot about them, and also just the wider magic of the dc universe.
like all of these guys together, they're actually really well equipped for a lot of stuff. they're just always doing like, space baseball and killing santa claus instead of more serious missions.
i probably got a lot of stuff wrong in this post, like i said it's been a long time since i read the yj comics, and i also referenced a few things from comic series' i've only half finished which might be retconned later on or something. please correct me on literally anything

Tara Carpenter/Fem!Reader Sheâs the Man AU
Summary: inspired by sheâs the man, with a few changes
Warnings: Chadâs a bit of a jerk but nothing else really
WC: 9.3k
Authorâs Note: sorry for any mistakes. Hope yâall enjoy:)
"What?!"
"Sorry girls but I can't really do anything about it."
"But we win more games than the boys do!!"
"Yea what the fuck why aren't they the ones getting cut."
"What?! No you don't, you guys just face other girls that don't know how to play."
You couldn't believe what you were hearing. You couldn't believe you dated him. To be fair you had been sexually confused for a long time. Battling your inner self to be true to who you were. Frankie was your ex boyfriend and you honestly wanted to slap yourself every time you looked back at that relationship. You honestly didn't know what you were thinking.
"Oh really you guys haven't won a game since like what freshman year?" You backfired. "Can't even win a game against the schools rivals, Woodsboro Panthers." The boys in front of you glared at you knowing that it was always a touchy subject. The team had always been sore losers.
"I'm sorry girls but we have to practice unlike some people." The couch and the boys laughed as they walked away.
The girls team was left standing on the field feeling a mix of emotions. You were beyond pissed and there was absolutely nothing you could do.
*
You had been walking home, your music blasting in your ears. You had been extremely bummed out, your dream had always been to play soccer in the big leagues. Wanting nothing more than to play with your idols. Couldn't really do that if your school doesn't have a girls team. You would have to transfer to another school that does have one but you'd doubt that your parents would let you. The closest school would be Woodsboros, but they also didn't have a girls team.
The sudden pull of your jacket had you stumbling back. "Ah what the hell!" You turned around taking off your headphones. Only to be faced with your brothers girlfriend.
"Anthony-Oh ew it's you."
"What do you want Sherrie."
"Where's your brother. When you see him tell him to call me."
"What's the number, 1-800-BIYATCH." You laughed to yourself.
"Whatever. Just tell him."
You laughed as she walked away and went into the house.
*
"Wait what do you mean you're leaving?" Your eyes followed your twin brother (although you didn't really look that much the same, there was similarities but you were a bit taller then he was. And the much better looking twin) he was moving back and forth from his bag and his closet.
"The band got booked to perform in fucking London. Can you believe that?"
"London? As in London England? Wait, what about school. Don't you start next week?" You were sat on his bed strumming his acoustic guitar.
"Oh right, I wanted to ask if you can cover for me. You know, use that mom voice of yours and I don't know make a call or something." He closed his bag and packed one of his many guitars. Once he was finished he looked at you with a smile.
"Wait, what about mom and dad?"
"One of the ups of having divorced parents. Mom thinks I'm with dad. Dad thinks I'm with mom. And they both hate each other too much to call each other." Throwing two of his bags out window, followed by his guitar.
"And what about your girlfriend? I don't even know why you date her."
"Cause she's hot, it's a guy thing. Well, I'll see you in like two months, maybe more." Anthony smiled and left through the window.
"Anthony!"
"Oh were you talking with your brother?" The sudden voice of your mother startled you.
"Uh yea, on the phone. What the hell is that?" You used the horrendous dress that your mom was carrying as a way out. If clearly worked when your mom beamed down at you.
"It's your dress. For the-Ugh mom." You groaned, knowing what she was going to go on about. "I said I'm not doing it. There's no way I'm putting on a dress. Literally the last time I wore one was when I was two. I'm not doing it." Standing up and putting your brother's guitar away.
"I don't know even know why I keep trying." She said as she walked away. You rolled your eyes and stood up. Looking into the mirror. Your brothers picture to the side. You picked it up and held it up. You never understood how you were related to him. Let alone a twin. You truly never looked alike. You were a bit taller than he was. And honestly stronger as well.
"Well if you can't beat them. Join them."
**
"Ha. You're funny." The hairdresser laughed. Kirby shook her head as she continued to cut her clients hair. Looking back at you, only to stop laughing. "Oh you're not kidding. Wait you're serious."
"Yea come on Kirb, I have a point to make. And I can't do it if you don't help me. Quinn, Anika back me up." You looked back at your best friends.
"Yea come on Kirby. The coach and the whole school in general think that girls can't do half of the things boys can do. They kept the stupid boys team and they don't even win!" Quinn spoke, she was still heated on the matter. Although she didn't have the same dreams as you, she still wanted to support you.
"Yea Kirby, they even got new uniforms and lockers for the boys team. A losing team might I add again." Anika voiced from your side.
"Come on Kirby please." The three of you spoke simultaneously.
The elderly client butting in. "Yea come on Kirby."
With a laugh Kirby laughed and nodded. "Fine."
*
"Damn. You make one fine ass man." Quinn whistled when you stepped out. You so badly wanted to scratch your head. The wig was something you'd have to get used to.
"Shut up. Do I really look like a man?"
"Yea one hot ass man." Anika joked as she stood next to you, reaching up to fix your wig. Quinn laughed from her seat as she ate her popcorn.
"Okay. Now we got the walk. The talk. Tomorrow you start. Remember be confident. You got this. We got all the paper work ready, oh and also. Remember to respond to the name Anthony. Anika literally tried to get your attention using your brothers name, and you didn't listen. Cause you have to get used to it." Kirby said as she got some of the popcorn from Quinn.
"Okay. I got this. I got this."
**
"I don't got this. Take me back. This was a stupid idea. Don't you ever let me come up with any more ridiculous ideas ever again. I can't believe you actually listened to me. You never listen. I can't believe I came this far. Well it's far enough. Take me back-Y/n stop!"
"Relax. You got this, now suck it up and get your shit together." Kirby handed you your bags and pushed you towards the entrance of the school.
You gulped and took a deep breath in trying to calm your nerves. With a look of encouragement from Kirby you made your way into the school.
*
Going into the boy side of the dorm rooms had been everything you expected and more. It was literally your worst nightmare come to life. The smell alone was enough for you to want to turn on your heels and leave. A mixture of body odor and a tone of axe spray. But you had to do this. You now had a point to make and you were going to make it.
You've never moved so fast to make it to your dorm. Slamming the door shut once, the relief of being in the safety of your room was washed away when you felt eyes on you. You were quick to straighten up and eyes wide as you looked at the three boys.
Clearing your throat, remembering to deepen your voice. "What up. Y'all must be my roommates." Nervously fumbling with your keys.
"Uh na I'm your roommate Chad. This is Ethan and that's Wes. They live next door."
You nodded as you put your bags down. Trying to swallow the anxiety that you felt coming up your throat.
"Yo what's your name?"
You turned around to look who was talking. Wes sat on the window seat playing with a ball.
"Anthony Y/ln, so you play the beautiful game bruhs, bros? Brothers?" You had tried to remember how boys talk but at the moment your mind was going blank.
"Yea, Ethan midfield and Wes plays defense and I'm a striker. What about you?"
"Center Midfield."
You cleared your throat as you got unpacked your bag. Taking out your boots, only remembering the tampons you shoved into the boot when Chad pointed them out.
"Dude why do you have tampons?!"
"Uh. I get really bad nose bleeds?"
After the horrifying and embarrassing display of you shoving a tampon up your nose. You were left with a big sense of regret. As the boys laughed and mocked you.
*
So far it's been alright.
That's a big fat lie. So far it's been hell. Things are horrible. The first try outs were today and man. You'd think it had been your first time playing. You had always thought you were great at soccer. It was a sport you loved. You had played it for the longest time. Now you wouldn't go and say you were horrible but you had a lot to learn. Especially since you made it on to the second string. That had been disappointing.
"Good job boys. Nice work, for the second strings don't feel discouraged. You are just as much on this team as the first stringers. Now go hit the shower. I'll see you guys tomorrow." Coach Loomis spoke before leaving to his office.
Showers?!
Crap! How could I forget about the freaking showers?!
You tried to think of any possible reason why you wouldn't be able to. You'd didn't really want to see anyone naked. Let alone a bunch of immature boys. But the closer you got to the boys locker the more you were starting to panic.
"Y/LN! Principal Riley wants to talk to you. So get a move on." Coach yelled from his office.
You had never felt so much relief like you did this moment. Never moving so fast to get out of a room before.
*
The talk with the principal had been one of the weirdest and most awkward talks you had ever been in. As you walked out of the office you felt your body collide with a smaller body.
"Oh my god I'm so sorry. Are you alright?" The sudden action causing your voice to come out normal before you could even realize. Moving to help pick up the books the shorter girl dropped.
"It's okay."
You looked up, only for your breath to hitch in your throat. The girl in front of you was so, beautiful. Completely gorgeous. The faint freckles that littered her face, made you want to count every single one. Her dark brown eyes, were so mesmerizing that you could get lost in that pool of dark chocolate. Her small smile had your heart hammering in your chest. The dimples that appeared had to be the cutest things you had ever seen.
"Uh here's your books." You cleared your throat deepening your voice, the smile that she directed your way was enough for you to almost go weak to the knees.
"Thanks. You're the new transfer student, right? I'm Tara."
Tara. What a beautiful name. You returned the smile, "Y/-Uh Anthony. It's nice to meet you Tara." You held out your hand for her to shake, at the sound of her giggle, your smile grew just a tad bit. But the moment her soft, small, warm hand was in yours it was like your hand was made to hold hers. At the sight of her blushing cheeks, you pulled your hand away, clearing your throat.
"Well it was nice to meet ya Tara. I have to go and do some, guy stuff. Uh I'll see you around." With a nod you were quick to walk away. Part of you hoping you'd run into the Tara again.
*
"Dude this is not working. Who knew making friends as a dude could be so hard. Not to mention that I'm starting to smell. Kirby how could I forget about the showers. My roommate is a bit of jackass and-Alright take it easy. I can help you with the making friends situation and the shower problem. Let me just get the girls I've got a plan." Kirby cut you off before hanging up, not giving you a chance to respond.
"Kirby? Hello? Ugh, I hate when she does that." You mumbled. The past two days of being a 'man' have been a little bit harder than you had expected. Your roommates along with his friends are bit of jerks and clearly didn't want to be around you.
It wasn't long till, Kirby showed up with Quinn and Anika. Who had bright smiles on their faces. You hurried to get in the car. "Oh I've miss-oh wow you stink." Quinn cut herself off, pulling away from you.
"Don't remind me. Now what's your plan?"
*
With feeling fresh and clean, you walked into the restaurant with a new found confidence. You knew at least half of the students and soccer team were in the place at the moment. It was great for Kirby's plan, 'Make friends plan'. Her own way of making friends for you was well, "the boy way". That's why she had brought Quinn and Anika.
"Fuck here comes Anthony. Spread out so it looks like we don't got room." Chad nudged Ethan to the side as they spread out in the booth. It wasn't like he hated the guy but since the tampon moment in their room. He wasn't in a rush to make friends with his roommate.
"Oh my god Anthony Y/ln! Oh my god I've missed you so much."
Chad was pulled from his conversation with Ethan to see a red haired girl. She was hot.
"Quinn. Hey baby, how you doing?"
Chad couldn't understand how someone like Anthony could have girl like this one. The guy was weird. He acted completely strange. But here he was with this hot girl. Eyes widening a bit when the girl lightly kissed Anthony on the lips before leaving. He heard Ethan chocking on his soda when yet another girl, just as hot, called out to Anthony. The way this dark haired girl refused to let him go. Only leaving when Anthony slapped her butt.
"What the fuck? Did those two just talk to Anthony? Him?" Wes spoke in pure disbelief. There was no way. Seeing a hot brunette coming his way. He took his chance. "Hey there pretty lady."
"Ew. Are you talking to me?"
"I was just- Yea sure let me make it clear, girls with asses like mine don't talk to boys with faces like yours."
The two teammates shared a look, trying to hold in their laughter at the face Wes was making. The one of pure embarrassment.
"I'm looking for my boyfriend Anthony Y/ln."
The three boys jaw dropped in disbelief.
*
"Fuck it's your brothers girlfriend. Don't let her get too close or she'll recognize you." Kirby had spoken so quickly you barely had time to understand before you heard Sherries obnoxiously loud voice.
"Wait what?"
"Anthony!"
"Oh fuck uh be gone you craziest-" You felt a small sense of fear as you tried to dodge Sherries attempts to get to you. You had gone as far as using a stack of pizza boxes to cover your face. "Can't you take a hint. If I don't answer your phone calls or your texts. It could only mean one thing. We are done!"
Sherrie had acted like you expected. Leaving with scream of anger and most likely embarrassment. You were relieved on the other hand. Your cover was not blown. You heard the cheers and even felt the acceptance of your schoolmates.
"Dude that was awesome."
"You're officially my idol."
"Make room for the man."
*
Like Kirby had predicted. The plan had worked. You had the "respect" of your teammates and the school. Although you kinda felt a little bad for Sherrie. Even though she's been nothing but a bitch to you. You also didn't stink that was good. You had gotten used waking up super early in the morning. Getting the showers to yourself.
"Hey Anthony."
You turned at the sound of your brothers name. That was also something you kinda got used to. Being addressed as your brothers name and not yours.
At seeing who called for you, it had you smiling in a way you couldn't really control. "Tara hey. How are you doing?" You faced the shorter girl. She returned the smile as she looked up at you.
"I've been good. I haven't seen you around the past week. How's the school treating you." Tara had tried to see Anthony around the campus. But the campus was huge. She hasn't even got a glimpse of Anthony which was extremely disappointing.
"Oh it's been something else. I like the campus though." You looked down to what she was holding and it was stack of what you could clearly tell were heavy books. You reached for them without really realizing that you were. "Let me help you with those." You didn't really give her a chance to decline before taking most of the books.
"Thank you. But you didn't have to." Tara could feel the warmth coming from her cheeks. She could only hope that Anthony couldn't notice.
"It's okay, now what are you even studying that requires you to carry so many books." At sound of her laugh you smiled, her laugh was so sweet.
"Oh I've been transferred out of my class into another. Apparently I was too smart for that class."
"Nice, a smart girl." You teased smiling in satisfaction when you saw her blush. "No but seriously, aren't you running for class president?"
"Yes, I'm been elected to run. It's nothing." She looked away from his gaze. Her own mother had been dismissive of her achievements. She hated the feeling of being a disappointment. She's tried not to let her mother's words affect her but, it's her mother. The harsh words are bound to have an affect.
"Are you kidding? That's great, you were elected, which that alone is awesome. Don't sell yourself short. But don't worry future Ms.President. You have my vote." The smile you got in return was something you'd cherish. You hated how sad she had looked for a just a second before the look was gone.
"Thank you. That means a lot. Well this is me." Never had she felt so disappointed to arrive to her class. She had wanted to keep talking to Anthony. The way he acted around her was in a way no other boy has. He didn't treat her like she was just a piece of meat, like she was just some type of trophy he could show off to his friends. He was different from the other boys in school. "I'll see you later?" Hoping her voice didn't come off as hopeful.
"Of course. Later Ms.Future President." With a small bow you handed her books and walked away. Smiling when you heard her laugh.
*
Arriving into your biology class was something you weren't looking forward to. You hated cutting open any animals or anything that was once alive. Taking a seat as your roommate and his friends took a seat in front of you. The boys becoming your friends was also something new. Ever since that day at the pizza place your popularity had grown.
"Dude I keep forgetting to ask. But how long did you date that girl?" Chad asked as he took a seat in front of his roommate.
"Too long-Alright pick a name out of the bowl and who ever you have will be your lab partner for the rest of the year."
Taking one of the pieces of paper from the bowl you unfolded it. Smiling at the sight of the name. "Tara Carpenter." You looked up, searching for your brun-the brunette that was becoming your favorite. Eyes connecting with the beautiful chocolate eyes. Oh how you loved chocolate. Seeing the smile on her face as she looked at you. Sending a small wave.
"Dude you know Tara Carpenter? Switch with me." Chad couldn't help the small sense of jealousy at the way the girl he liked was looking at Anthony.
"Yea and no cause I said her name out loud." You gathered your things and moved to table Tara had moved to. Placing your bag on the table as you sat down. Leaning forward just bit.
"Hey Tara. I gotta be completely honest with you. The whole dissecting thing freaks me out, so I think you're gonna have to take the reins on this one." You whispered to her. Hoping no one else heard you.
"Wow I don't think any other guy would have admitted to that."
"Crap, you're right." Your eyes widen as you looked down at the paper with a cut open frog. The feeling of wanting to barf came strong.
"No no. It's okay. I got you. I'll take the lead." Tara wanted to wipe the frown on his face. It was such an adorable look but she also wanted to comfort him, so she reached for his hands, taking his hand into hers. His hands were so soft. Not like any other boy's hands she's touched. The warmth and softness of his hands made her want to hold on to them longer.
"Uh no papers from other classes on the table." A boy you e never seen before said, paper was pushed in between in your face and Tara's. Seeing the color of the paper. You quickly tried to grab it but Tara was quicker.
"Oh what's this poems?"
"Lyrics. They're hi-my my old stuff."
"You're the closest to heaven that I'll ever be. And I don't wanna go home right now."
You sighed in relief, realizing it was a song you wrote for your brother to sing. He wanted a romantic song and your were such a sucker for them.
"This is really good."
The way she was looking at you had your throat in a knot. Feeling like she could read your mind by the way she was staring intensely into your eyes.
*
As you walked out of the classroom you were pulled by the back of your shirt. "Dude what the fuck Chad!" Pulling your shirt from his grip.
"Anthony my guy. Did you tell her anything about me?"
"Who Tara? Was I supposed to?"
"Come on man. You could convince her to go out with me."
He looked so serious you couldn't help but laugh. "Dude you've been going to school together for, how long? I don't think she likes y-Come on! If you help me. I'll help you train to make first string for the rivalry game."
"Wait what? Seriously?" You were good, but apparently not good enough to make first string. And you had something to prove. You couldn't be distracted by anything. Not even a pretty brunette. It wasn't like Tara liked you.
"Okay, I'll tell her all about Chad Minks and how he's a great dude. But I won't force her."
"You're the man Anthony!" Chad cheered, this was going to work. He knew as much. He just needed someone to sweet talk him up to Tara. Then he would be the hottest guy dating the hottest girl in the school.
*
Training with Chad was fun. The more you trained with him. The more if felt like you were getting better than before. The love you had for game had always been big. Always trying to improve your self in how you play. With Chad's help you were a whole lot prepared and skilled during practices.
As for helping with Tara. It was coming along. Well the best it could without sounding pushy about the situation.
"So when can you let me read the rest of that poem?"
You were brought out of your thoughts at the sound of Tara's voice. You tried to avoid the frog that was cut open in front of you.
"Poem? What poem?" You teased, smiling when she squinted her eyes at you.
"Ugh you suck. I'm going to get you to read it to me one day. You just watch."
"Now, I heard from your friend Amber that you like someone."
"What?" Tara felt her eyes widen. She was going to kick Amber's ass when she sees her. Amber wouldn't tell him, that she liked him right? The feeling of her heart racing as she watched Anthony write down some notes before looking right at her with those soft y/ec eyes.
"Yea, is it by any chance Chad Minks? Cause I've seen what the way he looks at you. I mean I can see it."
Seeing the disbelief and was that disgust? You weren't sure. Reading people wasn't something you were really good at.
"Chad?"
"Yea."
"No."
"Yea."
"No! I mean he's good looking and all but he's just not the guy for me." Tara had tried to like Chad. He was what most girls wanted at the school. But every time she looked at him, she felt nothing. Chad was just like every other jock that has tried to get into her pants. Only wanting her for her body. She had seen how Chad was with Liv. Liv had been so in love with Chad. But the moment Chad got bored he left Liv. Liv had been left heart broken. Tara had gotten used to blocking out any guy that had tried to hit on her. Most of the guys (if not all of them) had always succeeded in making her extremely uncomfortable.
"Hmm I don't know maybe there's more to him than you think there is." You hated yourself for even bringing it up, you could tell this conversation was annoying Tara.
"So he's not just another dumb jock, who wants to get in my pants. So he could tell his friends but is too-Insecure to treat you as an equal?" You understood how she felt. It wasn't long you were also dating a dumb jock.
Tara looked at the taller boy in shock. Never had she met someone, let alone a boy, understand what she had felt. Seeing him agree had honestly left her feeling baffled.
"You know you are the first guy at this school who hasn't tried anything with me."
You felt you cheeks heat up as you cleared your throat, "Oh uh I'm not really looking for another relationship. Just got out of one that was a bit, hard I guess? You're a great friend Tara. You're actually the only person in this school I feel comfortable around."
Even if she felt a bit more that just disappointed that he only saw her as a friend. She offered him a smile. "I feel the same way about you." Her vocie coming out softer than usual. Looking into those beautiful y/ec eyes. It was enough for her to get lost in them. Even if he only saw her as a friend. She could work with that.
"Good, and just take my advice. Chad's a pretty cool dude, get to know the guy."
"I'll consider it." She was most certainly not going to. She watched as the soccer player tried to focus back on the task at hand. The cut open frog they still had to be dissected. The cute grossed out facial expression on his face was too cute for her to ignore.
"So what's that exactly?"
"Uh I think that's the spleen." A small noise of acknowledgment was all she got in response before she saw Anthony fainting and falling to his side. With a chocked laugh she was quick to check on him.
*
"I honestly thought you were joking about the dissecting thing freaking you out this bad." Tara couldn't hold back her giggles as he finally woke up. She had been worried at first. But the more she remembered the face the soccer player made, the more she couldn't help but to laugh.
"Ugh." You sat up, realizing you were now in the nurses room. You felt a little warm inside to see that Tara was sitting next your bed. Wondering if she was sitting there while you were out cold.
"How are you feeling? Down to dissect more frogs?" This time Tara couldn't help the full belly laugh.
As much as you tried to keep a straight face, a smile made its way to your face. You really liked the sound of her laugh. Her smile, the dimples you liked so much being on display. "You're so mean."
Tara brought up her hand to cover her mouth. Trying to control her laughter. "I'm sorry."
She looked utterly beautiful. The sun coming from the window shined on her like if she were an angel. All you wanted was to kis-Uh oh. No. No you couldn't be falling in love with Tara.
You couldn't.
*
"Yo! You okay? I can't believe you passed out over a cut open frog." The laugh that followed was nothing like Tara's.
"Yea whatever. But I've got you half way. She's considered going out with you." You flopped on your bed, looking up at the ceiling. Falling in love was not part of this plan. You couldn't for many reasons. One being the most obvious, YOU WERE A GIRL! For starters. You were a girl pretending to a boy, pretending to be your brother. Tara was obviously straight. And if you did show any signs of liking her, it would be misleading. You were a girl.
Tara was straight.
"Wait really? So should I go ask her out?"
"What? No!" Trying to ignore the jealousy you felt coursing through your body. "You don't want to freak her out."
"Ugh I hate the waiting game. I've been waiting for the past years. Since 6th grade. Thatâs five whole years. You have no idea how long I've wanted to, to date her. She's the hottest girl in the school."
You narrowed your eyebrows at your roommate. You won't deny that Chad is a great soccer player. He was outstanding on the field. And he was nice enough to help you out to make first string. But other than that you weren't really sure why he was so eager to be with someone who clearly didn't like him back.
*
"Wait what do you mean? You think he doesn't like you?"
Tara groaned into her pillow. As much as she enjoyed being with the taller soccer player. She couldn't ignore the small little voice in her head telling her that Anthony didn't like her back.
"I don't know Amber. He's not like any other boy I've ever met before. He hasn't even flirted with me. Not even once!" She chose to ignore the laugh coming from her best friend.
"What? There's no way. Every guy here has flirted with you at least once." Amber has watched for the past days how this guy had her best friend hooked with just his presence. She won't deny the guy was kinda good looking. But there was something about Anthony that was making her sexually confused? Amber was a proud lesbian. There was no denying that, but she had gone soooo long without finding any boy attractive. Not even when she was little. But now Anthony Y/Ln was a first. Now she didn't like him in that way like Tara did. But there was something about him that was familiar. She just couldn't seem to know what.
"Wait really?" Come to think about it, Amber has not seen Anthony flirt with any girl at all. Every time she saw him he it was always either during class (which he did really pay attention to) and then during the soccer practices. "Wait you don't think he's gay do you?"
That thought had never even crossed her mind. The thought of Anthony being gay had her sitting up straight to face Amber.
"What? No! There's no way-I mean, I don't know. Oh my god let it be me to fall for a guy who could possibly be gay." She groaned even louder as she covered her face with her hands. If Anthony was gay, she would have to move on. Or she could just ask. He did have those two girls at the pizza parlor. Not to mention that crazy ex. But if that were the case. Maybe he's bisexual. Or just now gave up on the girls and just wants boys now.
Ugh. It was just her luck.
*
"What's up Anthony."
You looked away from your open book. You had finally gotten away from Chad and his friends. A moment of peace away from those boys was what you desperately needed. They were rowdy and fun but you could only take so much before you wanted to pull your hair out.
"Sup Amber. How's it going?" Amber was Tara's best friend. You liked Amber. She was always putting Chad in his place when he tried to flirt with Tara. It was always a funny sight.
"Eh it's going but I gotta ask you something." She moved to sit next to Anthony.
You closed your book and looked at the shorter girl. "Sure what's up." You moved to grab your water bottle to take sip.
"Are you gay?"
The water burned as it went up your nose, you spluttered out wet coughs as you tried get your breathing back to normal. You took the napkins Amber offered you. "Jesus Amber. No I am not gay." Well you were. And as funny as it would be for these students to believe your brother Anthony was gay, you werenât that mean of a sister.
"Really? Not even a little bit?" Amber did not feel convinced for the weirdest reason. She just couldn't put a finger on it.
"No not even a little bit. Why?" You let out a chuckle once you had your breathing under control and you were no longer chocking. Gay?
"Well can you blame a girl for asking." So he wasn't gay, Tara did have a chance. Amber couldn't help but to feel excitement. Mingling is something she was great at.
*
You hated being here, carnivals. Absolutely hated them. Clowns were literally your worst nightmare and those things were everywhere. Not only did you hate clowns. But you absolutely hated that you had to change from being you to your brother. So you opted to just staying as you for the remainder of the day.
"Wait they thought Anthony was gay?" Anika asked again once she was finished laughing.
"Anthony gay? Girl he is as straight as they come." Quinn laughed as well, the girls along with Kirby had arrived at carnival before you did. You mom had called the moment you arrived and said you were signed up for the kissing booth. Part of you had never felt so offended and angry. You were not going to be kissing no strangers. No matter the cause before hanging up.
"Any cute girls there?" Kirby nudged your shoulder as you walked around. Noticing the blush on her younger friend. "Oh so there is. What's her name?"
"Stop. There's no-Liar! Come on. Tell us." Your two best friend nudged and pleaded to know. You rolled your eyes although you were smiling.
"There is on-" You were cut off by someone bumping into your body. You were able to catch them before they fell. "Oh I'm sorry."
At the sound of the voice, the voice that sounded awfully familiar! Tara furrowed her eyebrows before looking up at the person. Only for her eyes to widen in shock. The girl standing in front of her looked exactly like Anthony. Almost like a spitting image. "Do I know you?" She couldn't help up to ask.
"Uh no. I don't think so. Sorry." You moved to walk around Tara. As much as you wanted to talk to her as you and not Anthony. You couldn't, not without blowing your cover. You were quick (but not too quick to make it weird) away.
Kirby and the girls were quick to follow you. Noticing Anika sharing a long stare with one of the girls. "Oh my god was that her!" Speaking once she was far away from the short girl.
"Would you shut up, and yes that's her." Your cheeks flushing at the teasing grins that were looking your way.
"Dude she's cute!" Quinn shook your shoulders in pure excitement.
"You should totally try to get w-No, she's straight. And I don't know if you know this but I'm a girl." You shook her head, continuing your walk only to see Chad and Frankie fighting. You were quick to run to the scuffle. Trying your best to pull the two dude's away from each other.
"Frankie stop!"
Chad turned around at the voice, opening his mouth to say something he had been momentarily distracted enough for Frankie to hit him. Making Chad stumble into you. You caught him right when the security showed up. Quinn and Anika pulling you away before you could get in trouble.
"Hey are you okay?"
You were standing to the side, after being yelled at by your mom. It wasn't even your fault but you let her yell at you. The girls had gone to get food while you waited. The sound of Tara's voice you looked towards her. She offering such cute shy smile.
"Uh yea I'm okay. Thanks for asking." You murmured, you weren't sure why you felt so shy now. Maybe it because you weren't sure if Tara would like you as Y/n and not as Anthony.
"Are you related to Anthony Y/Ln by any chance?"
"Yea he's my twin brother."
"Wow you guys are crazy alike. It's almost uncanny. How do you know Chad?" Tara couldn't get over how you looked so much like Anthony. Ever since she bumped into you earlier that day. She couldn't stop thinking about you and Anthony. She had always been comfortable with her sexuality. She had always said she was bisexual. And right now was a good example why. Anthony. He was so charming, so sweet and just so funny. Honest. You. You were honestly the most beautiful woman she's ever seen.
"Yea we get that a lot. I'm Y/n." Sticking out your hand for her to shake.
"Tara." Tara took your out stretched hand. Your hand taking hers in a gente but soft shake. She looked down at your hand, it was awfully the same as Anthony. Down to the same softness that she has grown to like.
"Damn that guy who beat up Frankie was kinda hot, wasn't that your brothers roommate." Quinn asked as she wrapped her arms around yours, interrupting whatever was happening between you and the short girl. From the corner of her she was able to see the same girl that had bumped into you looking right at you. Maybe that girl wasn't as straight as she seemed. "Hi I'm Quinn."
"Nice to meet you. I should go back to my friends. It was nice meeting you Y/n." She couldn't stop looking at you, she hoped that it wouldn't be the last time she saw you. A past of her also feeling a bit of disappointment seeing the red head being so close to you.
*
"Dude, what? What's on your face." You spluttered with your words at seeing the tampon up Chad's nose. Part of you wanted to laugh.
"Oh this? Yeah I grabbed one of your." He pointed to the tampon as he got up. "And they actually work." He took the bloody tampon out and threw it away.
"Dude what happened?"
"Well turns out the dude I fought was your sister's ex. And man she looks just like you. It's kinda scary. I mean I have a twin but we don't look that alike. She's kinda hot. Is she single?"
"Eh we get that all the time. And yea she is but she's gay."
Chad's shoulder visibly deflated. "Damn."
"I thought you liked Tara?" You narrowed your eyes slightly. Hoping it wasn't noticeable.
"I do. But I can admire another woman. And your sister is hot. Can't believe she dated a douche bag like Frankie." He didn't even do anything to the guy and Frankie had just lost his cool. And Chad wasn't one to back down.
"Yea, everyone gots at least one person they regret dating." You laid on your bed. Remembering how Tara finally met you as your true self.
*
"Hi Anthony." You looked away from your homework to see Tara sitting down in front of you. You were once again in the library.
"Hey Tara. How was the carnival yesterday?" You closed your book, focusing on the way Tara was looking at you. She had the same look of when she was studying something. In this case she was studying you. Which was making you quite nervous. "You okay tar?"
Seeming to be snapped back to reality. Tara nodded, "Yea sorry. It was fun. Why weren't you there?"
Shrugging in response, "Crazy ex showed up and wouldn't leave me alone so I just ended up leaving."
"Mmh, I didn't know you were a twin." Tara couldn't get over how much Anthony and his sister looked alike. It was truly uncanny. It was like she was looking at a man version of the girl she saw at the carnival.
"Oh you met Y/n? How was that?" You wanted to know what she thought of you.
"She was sweet. We didn't talk long, her girlfriend showed up."
"Girlfriend?"
"Yea this pretty red head."
You let out a laugh. She thought you were dating Quinn. You love Quinn she was one of your best friends. "Oh you mean Quinn. No that's just my sisters best friend."
Having a weird sense of relief, she wasn't even sure why. She had just met you. Why did she feel jealous. She had no reason to feel this type of jealousy. "Oh. They just seemed close."
"They've been friends since they were in diapers. They've just had a close bond since like forever."
"That's sweet..Wait didn't you kiss the red head?!" The memory had been shoved right to the front of her brain.
"Oh...yea. Uh.." Think faster!! "That was more of a friendly kiss? Quinn was just trying to help me break up with my girlfriend at the time. Sherrie was-is crazy. She was also kinda of a bitch to Y/n."
At the mention of that girl being mean to Y/n. It had her feeling, protective? You had looked so nice. Your soft y/ec eyes held some type of warmth. She wanted nothing more than to talk to you again.
*
"Y/LN!" You jumped up from the leg press machine. You had been working out with Chad for the past hour. The game against your school was less than a week away. And you have been training hard. The practices have been a lot more easier now that you knew how to play like a man. Chad had been a great help.
"Yes coach?"
A jersey being thrown at you. You looked down at the jersey. Your last name stitched on the back of the jersey along with a big number name below it. You felt your eyes widen in shock and excitement.
"You're first string for the rivalry game."
"Really?"
"No I was joking, you idiot." Coach Loomis said sarcastically before walking away.
You couldn't contain your excitement. Jumping up and down. "Yes!" Chad laughed as he shook his head.
"Congratulations man."
*
"Oh I know. Ask out Chad, like in a friend date. But don't let him know that, do it in front of Anthony. See how he reacts." Amber looked at Chad and Anthony from across the gym.
"But I don't like Chad."
"Which is why it will be a friend date. But you'll tell him that on the date."
Tara debated the plan. She really liked Anthony. His personality, his attitude, the way he was around her. It was so refreshing. So pure.
"Okay."
*
You couldn't stop smiling. All your hard work was finally paying off. Your point that you were trying to make was almost done. Wanting finish your workout before calling the girls.
"Hey Chad."
You both looked up to see Tara in all her glory standing there. Looking at Chad.
"Tara! Hi."
You could tell that he was nervous. With a quick look from Tara. You sent her an awkward thin lipped smile. Hoping Tara couldn't tell how jealous and dejected as you seemed.
"How about we go out on Friday."
But she did. She could see how the happy glint in his eyes faded as soon as she mentioned the date. She watched as Anthony turned around fiddling with his phone.
"Really?! I uh mean. Cool. Yea cool I'll see you Friday."
*
You hated yourself for feeling so jealous. You hated it. You had no right to feel jealous. Tara was straight and clearly giving Chad a chance. You had to focus on the bigger picture. So you tired to do that.
Staying late at the gym before the big game tomorrow. You didn't know how long you were until you saw the time. Figuring you needed some good nights rest before the game tomorrow. With a quick shower, you made your way back to your dorm room.
You had expected for Chad to be home so quickly. You were sure he would still be out with Tara.
"So are you gonna tell me the truth?"
The truth? You looked at Chad wide eyed. Did he know that you weren't a boy. You were sure you had been good at hiding your true self. Maybe your wig had fallen off while you were sleeping.
"Uh truth?"
"Yes the fucking truth."
He seemed angry, well you assumed he had a right to. Maybe he felt a little weirded out that girl has been rooming with him for a while.
"Okay, I'll tell you the truth. But just know that I did this cause I had to prove something. I've always loved soccer and-What so you use me to get better at soccer and then what steal my girl."
You were confused now. What on earth was Chad talking about? "Wait what? What are you talking about?"
"Dude stop lying I saw you!" Chad knew he may have been overacting. First he was a bit mad and disappointed that the date hadn't gone as he had hoped. The date had been so awkward and he had just felt so uncomfortable, and top off the date Tara had told him she didn't like him in that way. When he had seen Anthony, his so called friend kissing Tara. He had felt so betrayed and extremely jealous.
"Saw me do what?"
With his anger at an all time high. He had pushed Anthony out of the room without any further explanation. Slamming the door in Anthony's face.
"What the fuck?" You were left confused. With no where else to sleep you walked away towards the library. Hoping that it was open.
*
"Yo Anthony! What are you doing here?!" Jumping up from the chairs you had pushed together in a form of makeshift bed. "The game is about to start."
This had you almost tripping over your own two feet as you ran out of the library towards the boys locker room. Confusion taking over as you saw your uniform was gone. Fumbling with your phone hoping to find some answers.
Tony: thanks for unpacking my things and making my room. You're the best sis
Tony: why did you sneak tampons in my drawer. Jerk
"Fuck."
**
You could only watch from the safety of hiding under the bleachers as your brother destroyed all your hard work. He truly was a horrible athlete. It was like watching a baby trying to walk. If anything a baby could probably play better.
Sighing in relief as the whistle blew out signaling the ending of the first half. Watching as the coach Loomis spoke to your brother. Banging your head on the metal. Your brother walked past the bleachers and you took this opportunity to yank him under the bleachers.
"What the fu-Y/n?"
"Dude what the hell are you doing?" You punched his arm, he was supposed to give you a heads up before coming back.
"Ow! Me? Why are you dressed like me?"
"Ugh I was trying to prove to our old school that a girl could be just as good as any boy on the damn team. Can you believe they cut the girls soccer team and not the boys?"
"Wait what? But the girls team win more games?" He knew how much you love the game. There was never a game he would miss when you played.
"Wait, what are you even doing here?"
"Oh!" Remembering what had happened last night. "There was this girl. She kissed me. And even though it was only a second cause when she pulled away from me and looked at me like I was stranger. But I came to look for her cause she was hot."
"That's what Chad was talking about." You mumbled to yourself. "Give me back my uniform. And stay hidden.â
*
âWait what do you mean you kissed him?â Amber asked as she looked away from the game. Half time had just started and it looked like Anthony was being given another chance. She had never seen someone play so horribly. It was almost laughable.
âYea I did.â
âThen why do you sound disappointed? Shouldnât you be happy, you have been crushing on the guy for a while now.â She looked back at the match. The second half time hasnât started yet.
âI donât know. I felt nothing. He usually makes me feel so much but last night, it felt weird like I was kissing a stranger. His lips werenât as soft as they looked.â She didnât really remember seeing his lips last night. But she remembered seeing those lips everyday. They had always looked so soft so kissable. The lips she kissed last night were not soft.
âWell Iâve seen him practice and he looked great during practice. The way he was playing in the first half, it might as well have been a stranger.â Mindy spoke up from her spot. There was no way Anthony was playing like newbie when he had trained so hard to make first string.
Quinn, Kirby and Anika shared a look. They were sitting behind the three girls. Maybe the short girl wasnât as straight as they had assumed.
*
The second half was going a whole lot better than the first half. With you scoring the first goal with the help of Ethan. The stadium bursting out in cheers. The score now being 1-0.
You could still fell the hostility coming from Chad. He refused to look at you, going as far as to not even passing you the ball. This caused him to lose the ball. Leading your old school to score. Tying the game.
âDude come on I know youâre mad but letâs put that aside for the next forty minutes.â You made the mistake of placing your hand on his shoulder. This caused him to push you away.
âGet your hands off me.â
âChad come on-â you were pushed again before Ethan and Wes held him back.
âDo you two little princesses have to step off or something?â Hearing your exâs voice was not what you needed. Hearing his obnoxious laughter along with his teammates was almost ruining the happiness you felt. âDo you neâY/n?!â
You didnât want to look at him. Cause now you were for sure made. The dream you had of proving yourself was burning down. With a heavy sigh you turned around. Seeing Frankieâs eyes widen in shock. Knowing the act was over. You took off your wig. Hearing gasps from literally everyone.
âYouâre a girl?!â Chad asked no longer angry. He couldnât believe he just physically pushed a girl. And his push hadnât been gentle.
âYea sorry about the lying, I had a point to prove.â You moved your gaze towards your coach. He had his arms crossed.
Hearing the laughter coming from Frankie and his teammates, even his coach had laughed. âYou canât play with a girl. It says in the rule book.â The coach said smugly. This was when coach Loomis stepped up. Taking the book from the other coach.
âWhat rule book? Here in Woodboro we donât discriminate. Based on gender.â Coach pointed his finger at the other coachâs chest. And you knew it hurt based on how the other coach stumbled back and how rubbed the spot.
âAlright then. You think you can beat us with a girl on your team. Good luck. Youâre gonna need it.â
With a wink being shot your way by Coach Loomis you smiled excitedly. You couldnât believe he was going to let you play. You quickly put your hair up in a ponytail so it wouldnât be in your face. You were now more confident more comfortable.
*
Winning the game had been everything and more. The way Frankie had run off crying was so funny, extremely hilarious actually. You had been told off by your parents like you had expected but you could tell they were proud. Especially your dad.
You also watched as Chad was being down talked by your brother. Probably telling Chad off for pushing you earlier.
âAll this time you were Y/n?â You turned around to see Tara standing there. She had not looked mad or anything. It was more a of curiosity.
âYes. Iâm sorry. I know it was misleading and wrong. For that Iâm sorry.â You fiddled with your fingers. Upon hearing laugh you looked up towards her. Her smile brighter than before.
âAre you kidding? If anything I need glasses. Cause wow. Also sorry for kissing yesterday. Kinda thought you were her.â Anthony walked back to his sister and the hot girl, although a bit dejected he was happy you were happy. He had never seen you so happy yet nervous at the same time. By the way Tara was looking at you. He knew she felt the same way. With a dismissive wave he smiled and walked away.
âSo? Youâre not mad?â
With a shake of her head, she took your hand in hers. âA little bit, but thatâs because I was so sexually confused, then you came along and Iâve never been so confused. Now Iâm just hoping you feel the same.â
With the smile of your own you grinned back. âIâve never felt so sure Ms.President.â
With a giggle of her own she wrapped her arms around your neck and brought you down for a long awaited kiss. Now these lips were soft. These were the lips she had been dreaming about. The feeling that had been absent were now there and going crazy. Just like she had wanted.
âI FUCKING KNEW IT!!â Amber yelled. There had been no way she found a boy attractive. Especially since she had the biggest crush on her best friends sister. But that wasnât relevant.

~ Please Please Please ~ P.B a fanfic ( sfw)
inspired by the song by sabrina carpenter
pov: smart!fem! reader x player! paige bueckers
an: so this is my first paige bueckers fanfic, the intros kinda long, but i think it came out pretty good, but there is gonna multiple parts to this, so just let me know if youâd like another one.
remember blue is flashback and purple is lyrics!!
warnings: mention of alcohol, cheating, lying, and mention of sex
â i know i have good judgment, i know i have good taste. itâs funny and itâs ironic that only i feel that way.â
youâre a senior in college at uconn, your mostly known for being the smartest person in your classes, never failing one grade, getting higher than a 90 at all times, 85 on your bad days.
you were in calculus, to you it was light work. you didnât really need to study often, having amazing memory and overall good attention span in class.
since you already completed 2 years of college in highschool, having your associates degree, you were already looking forward to getting your bachelorâs degree this year.
ââââââââââââââââââââââââ
you were collecting your stuff of the desk, putting it in you book bag, ready to go take a break from the series of classes you had just taken.
as you were walking out of the room, you heard someone call your name.
it was your teacher, professor zamora.
â hey, your the one with all the good test scores right?â , he asked knowing but just wanted to make sure, to ask for a favor.
â yesâŠ. i amâ, you shyly responded, a little nervous at the sudden attention.
â okay good, so since you have the best grades in the class right now, i was wondering if you were free for another class period.â
free? another class period? what is he trying to imply? i know i might look naive and small, but Iâm not stupid to know what men want. i am lesbian after all. although i had my suspicions, i trusted my professor.
â yes i actually am. why professor?â
â great! i was just wondering because my next class period is algebra, andâŠ.lets just say ive had them for a few years nowâŠanyways, they need help. just pick the one you want and you can tutor them.â , he said praying that she would agree.
although she did have a break for the next two hours, she could spend one of them helping someone, itâs the right thing to do.
â yes of course! iâm willing to tutor anyone that needs my help.â, you say enthusiastically, ready to help people be the best they could be.
â great! just come back in around 30 minutes, and by then they should be here.â, your professor said, thankful for your help.
â okay i got you.â , you said walking out of class, going to grab a bite to eat.
ââââââââââââââââââââââââ
after the short thirty minutes pass by, you start walking back to the class, praying that this goes well.
as you make your entrance through the door, you see a familiar face.
shes a blonde, tall, blue eyed girl walking to her desk, a purple nike elite backpack on her back (that looks fairly empty ), and a slow sluggish walk .
you could tell who it was from a mile away, it was paige bueckers.
THE paige bueckers.
you noticed her since in your free time u went to go watch the basketball games, cheering for your favorite player on the team, paige obviously. although you went to almost every game, you went unnoticed by her, standing in the back of the crowd just admiring how she played.
you werenât a mega fan.
you totally didnât scroll on tiktok, looking and saving the edits youâd find. damn sheâs so attractiveâŠ
âah ah ah, no liking her. sheâs in algebra. sheâs obviously not smart, not to be mean of course. just observing.â , you think to yourself as you look around the room, waiting for everyone to take their seats.
it wasnât only about academics. paige was also known for hopping around from girl to girl, you know this since a couple of your friends had their fair share of dating her.
you were awoken late at night by a loud knock at your door. who could be awake this late?
as you opened the door, you came to a sad sight.
there your friend, lilly, was crying at your doorstep.
she was sobbing, her eyes swollen , puffy, and red due to the amount of uncontrollable tears.
you knew whatâŠor should i say who this was about.
over the course of 2 months, your friend was on and off with her situationship, paige. lilly didnt know wether her and paige were a thing or not, she never knew what paigeâs next move would be, little did she know that her next move would be completely ghosting her and pretending like she didnât exist.
â i just- i just donât know what i did wrong. i mean i bought her things, i spent time with her, i supported her at all her games. every single one. how could i be so stupid? iâm literally one of the smartest people in this whole college and im not smart enough to realize that a girl is totally playing me.â , she sobbed grasping onto you like her life depended on it.
â itâs okay lilly itâs okay, you deserve better.â
although lilly was your friend, karmas a bitch, she shouldâve known better, if she had a wish, she wouldâve never fucked around with paige ( LMAOOO ).
lilly, yes got hurt, but she was a bad person. in her past she was known for cheating, lying, and stealing. well stealing other peopleâs hearts of course. she would talk to them, make them fall in love, then drop them after they bought her a gift of some sort.
another one of your well known friends, keisha, always hooked up with paige. whenever paige was bored, sheâd text keisha a good â u up?â late night text , and keisha would be at her dorm room in no time, ready to have good sex.
of course, they werenât your friends anymore, you realized soon after that lilly was a bad influence since she lied and cheated, while keisha was just to influenced in alcohol and hook up culture.
in essence, this girl was bad news, and she only liked the bad girls, so youâd obviously have to stay far far away from herâŠ.
ââââââââââââââââââââââââ
â so how do you find x if you donât have y?â
fuck my life.
â paige, itâs not that hard. really. i learned this shit in seventh fucking grade, and you canât get it. look let me show youâŠ.again.â, you said irritably, getting impatient by the second. you felt like youâve taught her over a thousand times.
you guys were in her dorm, on her purple comforter, you were trying to teach her the literal easiest shit ever, and she couldnât comprehend it. ugh sheâs like a toddler.
â so to find out x i have to add y andâŠwhat again?â
kms.
â UGHHH paigeeeeeâ, you said, hands in your hair , frustrated with the stupidity this girl had. how could she be so smart on the court, yet so dumb when it came to math?
â please, i need help, if i donât pass this then i canât play basketball. and we both really know how much i love basketball. itâs my everything. please?â, she said, her player facade fading away, showing her true and vulnerable self.
ugh those eyesâŠ.
â âŠone more time paige. just try your best to get it. concentrate.â
paige nodded and smiled at her, looking down at the paper to attempt to grasp the information that she had trouble with.
ââââââââââââââââââââââââ
â I ACED ITâ, paige screamed, jumping up and down.
â REALLY?â, you said eyes wide.
â YES YES YES, omg iâm so happy right now!â, paige said , her eyes showing the pure raw excitement paige had.
paige then unexpectedly embraced you in a hug, it catching you off guard, but nonetheless, you hugged back.
if you knew the hug was wrongâŠ..why did it feel so right?
you guys stood there for a solid minute, embracing eachother. you inhaled, smelling the sweet scent she radiated.
â okay well i gotta goâ, you said, sad knowing that this would be the last time that u had an excuse to spend time with her.
â yea- um same.â, she said, giving u a slightly forced smile.
as you were walking away , sadness filling ur heart, u heard someone shout your name.
it was paige.
â hey um, what about i take you to dinner?..you know just to thank you for all the work youâve done to help me of course.â, she said with a hopeful look, her bright blue eyes illuminating like the pacific ocean.
how could i say no to those eyes?
â um..you know whatâŠyea of course. tommorow at 9 sounds good?â, you said , happier than youâd like to admit.
â i promisedâem that your different, and everyone makes mistakes. but just donât.â
â iâm telling you, you shouldnât surround yourself around her, sheâs a bad influence! she literally broke your ex friends hearts! both of them! paige isnât a good girl to fall in love with.â, dominique one of your most recent friends said, stressed out about your love life right now.
â i mean, she asked me out to dinnerâŠâ
ââŠ.she what? donât tell me you said yesâŠâ
â i said yes.â
ââââââââââââââââââââââââ-
â donât bring me to tears when i just did my makeup so nice.â
you finished up your final touches in your makeup, when u got a text message.
pb and j
hey pretty girl
iâm here
iâm going.
as you came out your dorm, paige was there at your door checking her breath, startled by your sudden appearance, she smiled awkwardly, bringing up lego roses to your face.
how did she know that i didnât like real flowers? and that i love legos?
your heart warmed at the sight, smiling at her, full teeth on display.
â thank you paige, you shouldnât have, really.â, you said, almost feeling bad that she spent money on you that she shouldnât have.
â no no no itâs my pleasure honestly.â , she said with a grin, sighing , relieved that you liked the gift.
â letâs get going?â, you said.
â whoever is last is the rotten egg!â, she yelled loudly, before running down the hall making her way down the stairs.
ââââââââââââââââââââââââ
âi heard your an actor, so act like a stand-up guy. whatever devils inside you, donât let him out tonight.â
theyâre at the restaurant, itâs way fancier than you expected. the waiter sat you guys down, and now both of you are looking at the menu.
when the waiter comes back, both of you agreed on chicken alfredo, and both of you got dr. pepper.
you guys start making conversation, talking about the things you didnât know about eachother , and your goals in life.
ââââââââââââââââââââââââ
as you guys finished with your delicious meal, you decided that it was time to leave and go home. it was getting late after all.
as both of you walked out, the moon shining bright on your faces, the date unfortunately coming to an end, you guys talked a bit more, laughing at eachother jokes.
â well that was fun.â, paige said, laughing, her teeth as bright as the stars.
â yea it really wasâŠâ, you say with a smile on your face that couldnât be removed no matter how hard you tried. a smile so permanent that it ached.
you guys gazed into eachothers eyes, her eyes taking a trip down to your lips, slowly bringing them back to your eyes once again.
â paige i-â
you got cut off by paige, as she brought her lips to yours, sealing the night in a fond memory of the kiss you shared, the kiss that was between the two of you.
after a while, you opened your eyes and looked at her. she had her goofy smile on, looking at you withâŠ.i think loveâŠ? no couldnât be. just lust.
â um we should do this again. â
say no say no.
â yes of courseâ, you said with a smile.
â okay wellâŠsee you later. iâll text you! â, paige said as she back peddled to her car, winking at you, before running to the vehicle .
god sheâs such a goof.
as you got in your car, you only had one thought while having your head on the wheel, thinking about all the occurrences that had happened over the past few months. even though you knew it might end up bad, you couldnât help but thinkâŠ
please please please, donât prove em right.
ââââââââââââââââââââââââ

episode one: the vanishing of will byers
Steve nods, as if you almost getting hit by his car makes perfect sense to him. When you walk over to your bike and inspect it for any damage, he follows after you. âSo,â he whistles, trying to pretend that this is all a completely normal occurrence. âYou, uh, need a ride?â Honestly you donât know why youâre surprised he hasnât noticed the clear signs of you crying, your swollen eyes and red nose. Not only is he a boy, but heâs also Steve Harrington. Itâs a miracle he even stopped to make sure you werenât dead.
summary: jonathan smuggles you free food in exchange for friendship, will goes missing the one time you listen to jonathan, hopper doesn't really like you, and steve harrington almost hits you with his car as you're sobbing like a damn baby (in a cool way).
rating: general, although there's plenty of cursing and slight innuendos, so fair warning.
warnings: cursing, fem!reader, and use of y/n.
words: 7k
before you swing in: hello ! this is the first chapter of my come home series, where i plan on rewriting the entirety of stranger things because i really love a good rewrite fic and this is me just indulging in my ideal fic fantasies tbh. before we start: this is a steve x reader fic, however there will be some slight feelings between the reader and jonathan, but it doesn't at all get in the way of steve and honestly just adds to the angst because i love a good tragedy. also, reader is dustin's older sister, but i tried to write her as neutral as possible in terms of physical features, so let's all just play along. that is all ! i'm very excited for this series and i hope y'all enjoy her as much as i do :)

November 6th, 1983
Your shift at Bookstrordinary ends at 8:30 tonight, so as soon as youâve organized all the books within the store and cashed out the last customer, you say goodnight to your boss, Mrs. Waters, and clock out. Today had been a longer shift, and it didnât help that you had to deal with a particularly eager bookclub mother who insisted that you had the latest copy of some obscure novel that she needed for her club. After several attempts to inform her that no, you really didnât have some novel about a cowboy falling in love with a rodeo girl from Michigan, nor would you ever want to read that, the mother angrily walked away.Â
Youâre happy to finally be free from work though, excited to see Jonathan to tell him about the book club mom because you know he gets a kick out of those suburban middle class mothers that terrorize Hawkins. He works across from you, at The Hawk theater, and itâs one of your favorite things about the bookstore. Besides getting to be surrounded by books all day and reading Spider-Man, you get to be across the street from your best friend and share frequent breaks together.Â
A bell signifies your arrival at the theater, alerting Jonathan to look up from the concession stand and smile at you. He looks tired, which you can understand. Itâs been a particularly long school year so far with Jonathan having to work more shifts than usual to support his family.Â
âWelcome to The Hawk, can I interest you in our specialty popcorn and candy corn mixture?â
You make a face, âNo, thanks. Candy corn freaks me out.âÂ
Jonathan laughs, knowing youâd say that. Itâs been a running joke between the two of you for as long as you can remember. Youâre not picky with most foods, but candy corn? The bane of your existence. âTough crowd, then.âÂ
You laugh as well, now standing in front of the counter, and you learn against it so that youâre in Jonathanâs space. After being friends for so long, personal space doesnât exist between the two of you. Youâre the only person that Jonathan lets get this close to him on a regular basis, which youâre secretly proud of.Â
âSo, you almost done so we can pick up our idiotic brothers?â Tonight, as usual, Will and Dustin are at Mikeâs house playing DnD. Theyâd biked over as soon as school let out, while Jonathan drove you to work, so he was your ride back for the night.Â
He shakes his head at you, wincing, âI picked up an extra shift tonight. Stacy called out sick, and itâs good moneyâŠâ
You nod in understanding. He doesnât have to explain himself to you, which heâs always relieved by.Â
âItâs okay. Is my bike still in your trunk?âÂ
âYeah, I can get it out for you since Iâm kind of ditching you tonight.âÂ
You wave him off, already reaching across the counter to grab his keys from his coat pocket. âNo need, Iâll get it out myself so you donât get in trouble with your boss.â Jonathanâs boss is an older guy, extra scary. âIâm assuming that Iâm taking Will home tonight?âÂ
âItâll be late by the time you get the boys, and youâll have Dustin. We only live a couple blocks apart, you can just bike with Will until you get to your street.â
âAre you sure? I know heâs scared of the dark.âÂ
âItâs fine, Y/N. Youâre already doing enough being there for most of the ride; Iâm sure Will can survive the last five minutes alone.âÂ
You give Jonathan an unsure look, but you donât argue with him. Heâs his brother, he knows Willâs capabilities, and itâs an unspoken fact that you baby Will a bit too much. Heâs just so much tinier than the other boys, softer in a way that you want to protect. Heâs special.Â
Jonathan sneaks you a large peach lemonade and hot dog from the concession stand when you return with his keys. Youâve parked your bike up front, and you accept the food gratefully. You hadnât had time to eat your usual dinner during your break due to the bookclub mother fiasco, so you inhale the food quickly and give his hair a ruffle.Â
âYouâre a lifesaver, bee.âÂ
Jonathan lightly hits your hand away from his hair. âConsider it your payment for dealing with Will and Dustin on your own tonight, bug.âÂ
Bee and bug were the names the two of you had given each other years ago. Jonathan had started it with bug, stemming from the fact that you love Spider-Man so much, and you had struggled to come up with your own nickname for him. Then it came to you: bee, or B, for Byers. It was perfect, and youâre still incredibly proud of yourself for the creativity, honestly.Â
After your quick dinner, you say goodbye to your friend and head off. Itâs late now, nearing 9, and you hope that Mrs. Wheeler and your own mom wonât be too upset with you for being late for pick up. You know they prefer to have the boys in bed by a decent hour, but in your defense, Jonathan did skip out on you.
You arrive at the Wheelerâs in a short amount of time and knock on the door. Your cheeks are flushed from the early November cold, and youâre regretting that you only put on a thin sweater and jeans this morning.
Mike answers the door, giving you a dirty look. âDid you have to come early?â
âIâm actually later than usual,â you sidestep him, making your way into his house; youâve become used to Mikeâs attitude. âI take it the campaign is still ongoing?â
âSee, mom? Even Y/N understands how long a good campaign can go on for!â Mike waves his arms at you, as if to signify to his mother the importance of your understanding.Â
Mrs. Wheeler ignores her son to greet you kindly, albeit a bit exasperated. âHello, Y/N, please come in.â Then she turns to Mike, giving him a stern look. âMike, why donât you tell Y/N how you boys have been playing for ten hours? Iâm sure sheâll be understanding then.âÂ
âYou guys have been playing for ten hours?â
Mike looks down in embarrassment for a second before turning to his father for help. You laugh a bit at his enthusiasm and see a faint smile on his momâs face as well. Quietly you excuse yourself to go downstairs to find the other boys, and Mrs. Wheeler wishes you luck.Â
Everyone always acts like the boys are some giant pain; truthfully, you enjoy them. Sure, they can be a handful, but theyâre just kids; itâs hard for you to ever stay mad at them. Plus they like you, so it makes dealing with them easier.Â
Lucas, Dustin, and Will are running around the basement when you get down there, frantically searching for something. You hear Lucas inform Will that if Mike doesnât see something, then it doesnât count. The urgence in his voice amuses you; youâll never fully wrap your head around why they take DnD so seriously, but you love that they can enjoy it with each other.Â
Dustin is the first to see you. âY/N!â
The other boyâs heads turn to you and they greet you with enthusiasm as well. Will rushes towards you for a hug, which you gladly accept. When you break apart, Lucas gives you a high five and asks about a comic youâve put on hold for him at the store.Â
âAny luck?â
âSorry, Sinclair. Itâs still sold out, but the second itâs restocked Iâll smuggle one for you.âÂ
âSick!âÂ
Dustin walks over, now in his coat and holding a pizza box. âWant a slice?âÂ
You decline, informing him that Jonathan snuck some food for you. At the mention of his brotherâs name, Will asks where he is. You tell him that Jonathan had to cover a shift and that youâll be taking him most of the way home tonight.Â
As you all make your way upstairs, you notice that Dustin continues up to the second floor. Lucas notices too, and the two of you share a knowing look.Â
âStill have a crush on Nancy?â You ask, already knowing the answer.Â
âYup.â Lucas responds, smiling in disappointment.Â
You wait for your brother outside, helping Will with his coat and listen to Mikeâs rambling about the campaign. Lucas is already on his bike, ready to go.Â
âThereâs something wrong with your sister.â Dustin declares when he finally returns.
Mike looks at you, then at your brother, confused. âWhat are you talking about?âÂ
âSheâs got a stick up her butt.âÂ
âDustin!â You berate. Nancy isnât your favorite person, but sheâs always been nice to you the few times youâve interacted. You guys used to be closer when you were younger, but high school has a way of distancing people.
âYeah,â Lucas now speaks up. âItâs because sheâs been dating that douchebag, Steve Harrington.â How the hell does Lucas even know about that? You didnât even know about that until just now.Â
âLucas! Language!âÂ
âYeah, sheâs been turning into a real jerk.â
âDustin, I swear to God-âÂ
The boys ignore you, which youâre honestly not surprised by. While they may like you, that doesn't mean that they listen to you. On a good day they maybe listen to you 25% of the time, but tonight was clearly not a good night.Â
Mike finally cuts in, âSheâs always been a real jerk.â
âHey, sheâs your sister. Give her some credit-â
Dustin is now the one who cuts you off. âNuh-uh, only you get the sister leniency, Y/N. Nancy used to be cool, now she isnât.âÂ
âRemember that time she dressed up as an elf for our Elder tree campaign?â Lucas asks, almost reminiscent.Â
You shudder at the way he says it, and you shudder more when you see the dreamy look in your brotherâs eyes. âYeah, I rememberâŠâÂ
âGross,â you huff at your brother, now hopping on your own bike.Â
Lucas and Dustin begin to pedal away, and you call after them to wait up. Will is still with Mike, and you promised Jonathan youâd get him home. You give the boys a bit of space, waiting a few paces ahead. Will has always been shy around Mike, something that youâve tried not looking into too much, but to be safe you give them some privacy.Â
Faintly, you hear Will say, âThe Demogorgon, it got me.âÂ
Lights flicker a bit, but youâre too focused on the slight unease you feel by Willâs words. Before you can think too much about them, he joins you. âRace you up to Lucas and Dustin?â
âYouâre on,â you tell him.Â
Will beats you to the boys (which you let him do), and youâre out of breath. The four of you bike in silence for a bit until you reach Lucasâs turn into his neighborhood.Â
âGood night, ladies.â He says, and you donât need to be a psychic to know what your brotherâs response is going to be.
âKiss your mom ânight for me.â Bless him.
You and Will giggle together, and Dustin smirks at the two of you, proud. He sits in the praise for a few moments before challenging you and Will to race home with the promise of a comic for whoever wins.Â
âI call last yearâs Black Cat issue of Spider-man!â You call out, already biking away from the boys.Â
âWe didnât say go!â
Dustin and Will call after you as they try to catch up, and within a few seconds the three of you are speeding down the hill towards your home. You laugh gleefully, enjoying the way the wind whips through your hair and the way Dustin, though annoyed by your early start, laughs alongside you with Will.Â
Somehow Will is the one who wins the race, which youâre impressed by. He may be small, but heâs surprisingly good at winning when it comes to a competition. Dustin shouts at Will that heâll kill him, which makes you send a warning look at him.Â
âIâll take your X-Men 134!â Will retaliates, still flying through the street.Â
You and Dustin are now stopped at your mailbox and you take a moment to catch your breath before shouting at Will, âBe careful, please! Stay safe!â
âIâll be fine, I promise!â Willâs voice is distant, now a few yards away, and you stand outside for a few more seconds to watch his figure disappear into the night. Dustin has already gone inside but you wait to follow, only going inside when you can no longer see Will, hopefully home safe and sound. You feel fear creep upon you, but you chalk it up to your usual worry when it comes to the boy.Â
Heâll be okay, Jonathan should be home within the hour.Â
âÂ
The next morning youâre frantically biking to school, pissed off at Jonathan. Heâs your ride every morning, or everywhere, really, and for the second time in 24 hours heâs bailed on you. Dustin left for school ages ago on his bike, so youâre thankful he doesnât see you embarrassingly sweaty and gross as you race to school.Â
Itâs not that youâre pissed that Jonathan bailed again, youâre pissed because he didnât even have the nerve to call you ahead of time to warn you. Now you have only ten minutes before the first bell rings, and your sweater clings to you uncomfortably as you sweat.Â
You make it to school with a few minutes to spare, so you quickly make your way over to your locker to grab the necessary books for the day. Youâre still sweaty, and you donât want to even think about what your hair looks like right now. You look down the hall towards Jonathanâs locker, still not seeing him, and you begin to worry a bit. Maybe he overslept after last nightâs shift?Â
A body crashes into yours, sending your notebooks spiraling to the ground. Steve Harrington looks at you sheepishly, only saying a small âwhoops!â before continuing his fast pace towards the girlâs bathroom. You scoff, now even more annoyed with your entire morning, picking up your stuff as you see Nancy enter the same bathroom a few moments later.Â
âIn a public school bathroom?â You mutter in disgust, collecting the last of your things and heading to class.Â
You decide to give Jonathan until second period, sophomore English which the two of you share, before you freak out. You know you have a problem with over worrying about the people you love, so you try to calm yourself down. While Jonathan has never been the type to cancel without at least calling first, you reason with yourself that everyone has a bad morning. He simply slept in too late. When he wakes up, heâll come to school and heâll be sitting in the seat next to you in English.Â
Except Jonathan isnât in the seat next to yours when you enter the classroom an hour later. Now you officially let yourself begin to worry. Something about this doesnât feel right.Â
Youâve never skipped class before, school has always been important to you. Youâre the top of your class with hopes of running away from Hawkins with Jonathan to a big city with an even bigger university. However, you donât even hesitate to flee the classroom and find the nearest phone in the school to call the Byersâ residence.Â
Jonathan answers after a few rings, and the words that leave his lips change your life forever. âWill is missing.â
You feel all the air in your lungs be knocked out of you. You canât breathe and you sway a bit as your knees threaten to give out. This isnât real, this canât be happening.Â
âWhat?â
âWill, he-heâs gone, Y/N. We canât find him and-âÂ
You donât hear whatever else Jonathan says. You struggle to get air back in your lungs. Will isnât missing, you just saw him last night. Mere hours ago Will laughed next to you, face alive with joy, he hugged you and joked along with you.Â
âHe didnât come home last night-â
âHe didnât come home?â Jonathanâs words catch your attention and you feel bile rise in your throat. Will didnât make it home last night. You were the last one to see him, and the realization crushes you; itâs all your fault.Â
âMom and I just searched the woods, and thereâs no sign of him and-â Jonathan is rambling now, his own fear and despair clear in his voice.Â
âJonathan,â you force his name out, now needing to be there for your best friend. You can worry for Will in your own time, right now Jonathan needs you. âIâll be there in fifteen minutes.âÂ
âY/N, you donât-â
You hang up before Jonathan can argue with you and stumble towards the exit. Your limbs feel heavier than normal, and your ears are ringing. Will is missing. Heâs so small, heâs scared of the dark⊠You left him alone in the dark.Â
The bike ride to the Byers home is a blur. You donât remember much, your body going on autopilot the second you hopped on your bike. Youâre running on pure fear and adrenaline right now, too worried for your boys to focus on anything else.Â
You donât bother to knock when you arrive, instead you let yourself in. Joyce is on the phone, arguing with some woman named Cynthia. Your eyes find Jonathanâs, who is sitting on the couch hunched over something. You walk over to him and sit down beside him and your stomach lurches when you see the words âhave you seen me?â heâs so neatly printed out on a piece of paper.
âBeeâŠâ you exhale, voice cracking a bit.Â
Jonathan doesnât say anything, but you know him as well as you know yourself. He doesnât want comforting words right now. You take his hand into yours and lean your head against his shoulder. Worry has made his muscles tense, but you feel him relax into you a bit as he rests his own head against yours. The two of you sit like that for a moment, taking in the comfort you bring each other.Â
âBitch!â Joyce slams the phone down, causing you and Jonathan to jump apart.Â
âMom,â
âWhat?â Joyce is a mixture of both rage and anxiety, and you feel awful looking at her. Her son is missing, you canât imagine what she must be feeling right now.
âYou have to stay calm.â Jonathan tells her, his voice firm but kind. You know itâs taking everything in him to be as stable as he is right now; heâs putting on a front for his worried mother. You squeeze his hand, hoping it conveys the support and love that you need it to.
He squeezes back, and you see Joyce finally recognize that youâre there as well. She sends you a weak wave, which you return, before she goes back to dialing and trying to reach Lonnie. Jonathan gives your hand one last squeeze and lets go, now returning back to the posters. You immediately understand that heâs doing this to distract himself, so you do the same and wordlessly help him.
You begin writing your own âhave you seen me?â when Joyce once again slams her phone down. The sound makes you flinch, inadvertently messing up your writing, which you sigh at. Before you can ask Jonathan for another piece of paper, you hear a car pull up.Â
Jonathan stands up to investigate, alerting his mom that the cops are here. You follow after them outside, your heart dropping when you see Willâs bike in the Chiefâs hand. He ushers everyone inside, informing Joyce that he found the bike lying in the road.
âHow far was it from the house?â You ask, your voice frail.Â
The Chief looks at you, his nametag informs you that his name is Hopper, and raises his eyebrows. âAnd can I know who is asking?âÂ
You clear your throat, nervous under his scrutinizing gaze. âIâm Y/N Henderson. Iâm close with the Byers, I biked with Will home,â your voice catches in your throat, snagging onto the guilt that has been clawing at you ever since you found out Will was missing. You clear your throat again, determined to continue. âI was with him last night. My brother and I live right off Mirkwood, a few blocks from here. He only had a few more minutes before he wouldâve been home.âÂ
Hopper stares at you. âMirkwood?â
âItâs where-â
âYeah, those moron kids explained it to me. I just didnât think someone your age would call the street that, too.â Then, as an afterthought, Hopper adds, âThe bike was found a block from here.â
His words sting, but you ignore it. If the bike was found only a block from the Byersâ home, then that means that something had to have happened to Will only minutes after you last saw him. You feel the familiar churning in your stomach, wracked with guilt.Â
âDid it have any blood on it?â Joyce now asks, and youâre thankful sheâs taken the attention off of you.Â
Jonathan sees your distress and grabs your sweater so that you fall back a bit from the cops and Joyce. âDo you need a minute?â
You can only nod, afraid that if you open your mouth youâll either cry or throw up. He gently guides you to his room, closing the door. Once youâre alone, he wraps his arms around you and pulls you in tight. Youâre shaking harder than ever now, Willâs happy and shining face from last night keeps flashing through your mind.Â
You were the last one who ever saw him.
Youâre the one who was last responsible for him.Â
You.
âItâs not your fault,â Jonathan whispers, his voice muffled by your hair. Youâve always loved how you fit perfectly in his arms, your height difference being just enough that he always rests his chin against your head when he hugs you.Â
âIâm the last person who saw him.â
âY/N, I was the one who asked you to only bike him halfway-â
âNo,â your voice comes out louder than you intend it to, and you push Jonathan away. He lets out a confused noise as you grapple at him, forcing him to look directly at you. âI shouldâve been with him, Jonathan. Itâs your job to support your family, and itâs my job to help you. I have to⊠I have to be the one who helps you.âÂ
Youâve always been fascinated by psychology, and you remember reading in one of the journals about codependency; the term was used in relation to addiction, specifically alcoholism, but it had caught your interest. To love someone to the extent that their actions make you feel responsible for them, to selflessly take on their burdens to a debilitating extent, well, it reminded you of your relationship with Jonathan.Â
Youâve always taken on whatever Jonathan has had to deal with, ever since you were kids, and itâs always come so naturally to you. Heâs never asked you to, and sometimes the extent to which you carry his weight angers him, but itâs how you love.
Itâs who you are. Youâre always the one who helps, itâs what you need to be able to do. If you canât help the ones you love the most, then what good is your love for them?
Jonathan may not know about codependency, but he knows how hard you love those closest to you. âBug, listen to me.â He grabs your face, almost aggressively, in order to cut off your rambling. âMy mom, she-sheâs already spiraling and I canât⊠I need you. I need you to be here, with me, right now. If I lose you too, then I-I donât know what Iâll do.â
His words cut through you like glass. Heâs right, you know heâs right, and you feel another wave of guilt wash over you. This guilt is different from the guilt surrounding Will. This is mixed with shame for allowing yourself to spiral so far and forcing Jonathan to take care of you. Joyce is clearly unwell, you canât fathom how much heâs had to deal with today.Â
You gently remove Jonathanâs hands from your face and take a step back. If youâre going to help him, you need to collect yourself. From here on out, you have to be a wall for him to lean on, a shoulder to cry on, someone who will listen to him.Â
âIâm sorry.âÂ
Jonathan shrugs at you, now allowing a hesitant smile to cross his face. âIf it makes you feel any better, it took a lot less pleading to get through to you. Iâm still working on my mom.âÂ
The joke is foul, one that should make you feel even worse than you already do, because what sixteen year old has to plead with their mother to remind her that heâs there, too? The joke is horrible, and itâs exactly what you need to find yourself laughing, and Jonathan joins.Â
Codependency can be a bitch, but Jonathan understands you in ways that no one else can.Â
âYou think the cops are gone?â You ask, wiping away the remaining tears.Â
Jonathan listens for any sign of them and shakes his head. âNo, I think weâre all clear.â
He walks out the room first and you follow after him. Joyce is standing in the kitchen, staring at the counter with a far off look in her eyes. You and Jonathan look at each other and you motion for him to go talk to her. He nods, and then you motion to the living room to indicate that youâll continue working on the missing posters.Â
Carefully writing on the posters soothes you, in a way. Itâs rhythmic, providing a sense of lull that you readily embrace. You faintly hear Jonathan talking with his mother, then you watch as he leads her to her bedroom and shuts the door. When he returns he sits next to you on the couch and begins to work on the posters as well. No words are needed.Â
You work on the posters in silence for a few hours until it nears 3pm. Dustin will be getting out of school soon, and you have to be there for him when heâs home. While Will may be Jonathanâs brother, heâs also your brotherâs best friend. You get up and head into the kitchen, long familiar now with its layout and usual contents within the fridge, and quickly prepare the ingredients for spaghetti. Itâs a simple meal, but Jonathan and Joyce need to eat. Once itâs all laid out, you return to the living room and tap on your friendâs shoulder.Â
âHey, I have to head out now to check on Dustin, but I just put a pot of water on the stove along with some noodles on the counter. I also cut up some vegetables and put them in the fridge for the sauce. Start the meal whenever, I laid everything out for you.â
âThank you, really,â Jonathan exhales, relief evident on his face. He hadnât even thought about dinner, which you figured he wouldnât.Â
You bend down to kiss the top of his head. âAnytime, bee. Iâll call you tonight, okay?â
âOkay,âÂ
âJustâŠâ you linger at the door, not fully wanting to leave him all by himself. âBe careful, please.âÂ
âGo, Y/N. Iâll be fine, I promise.â Jonathan reassures you.
âIâll be fine, I promise!â Willâs voice is distant, now a few yards away, and you stand outside for a few more seconds to watch his figure disappear into the night.
Itâs brief, but the flashback punches you in the gut. You close your eyes, holding onto the image of Willâs face in the moonlight last night, and when it fades you take a deep breath and force yourself to leave.Â
The second youâre on your bike, pedaling away from the house, you let the sobs that have wracked against your throat all day out. Itâs messy, the tears coming down your face faster than you can wipe them away. All the fear youâve felt is now able to freely come out. Itâs not the safest way to bike home, but you know that if you hold the tears in any longer youâll collapse. You do your best to still be alert, but apparently you fail because a BMW honks at you to avoid you hitting it.Â
âFuck!â You yank your bike to the right, having no idea that you had been on the left side of the road, and topple over. The fall isnât anything bad, but it definitely is your final straw for the day. You lay in the ditch youâve landed in, staring at the November sky, and let the pain from your skinned knee serve as something to ground you to reality.Â
âHoly shit, did I hit you?âÂ
Steve Harrington stands over you, a horrified look in his eyes.Â
âUnfortunately not, otherwise Iâd be able to sue you and get money out of it.âÂ
âUh⊠okay?â He offers you his hand, although still very confused. âYou didnât like, happen to hit your head or anything, right?âÂ
You accept his help, albeit mostly because you have to, and brush yourself off when youâre up. âIâm fine. I just wasnât paying attention, sorry.âÂ
Steve nods, as if you almost getting hit by his car makes perfect sense to him. When you walk over to your bike and inspect it for any damage, he follows after you.Â
âSo,â he whistles, trying to pretend that this is all a completely normal occurrence. âYou, uh, need a ride?â
Honestly you donât know why youâre surprised he hasnât noticed the clear signs of you crying, your swollen eyes and red nose. Not only is he a boy, but heâs also Steve Harrington. Itâs a miracle he even stopped to make sure you werenât dead.Â
âNo,â you say, now repositioning your backpack so that you can get back on your bike. âThanks anyways, Harrington.âÂ
Steve continues to follow you, even after youâve started to pedal away. âYouâre welcome, random girl I almost hit!â
Youâre a bit further now, and you still feel like utter shit, but his words somehow make you laugh a bit. For a brief moment, you forget about everything, so you call behind, âItâs Henderson!âÂ
âThatâs an odd first name!â The boy shouts after you, still following from a distance.Â
âY/N Henderson!â Youâre fully yelling now, a good yard away, but you can tell that Steve hears you based on the way he begins to wave eagerly, finally stopping next to his car. Faintly you understand the boyish charm that makes him so loved by all the girls in the school; you understand why Nancy Wheeler has fallen for him.
âBye, Y/N!â Itâs faint, but you swear you can hear a smile in his voice. Â
The good mood that Steve Harrington inexplicably puts you in vanishes when you near your house. Nothing has changed, yet it feels as if something has shifted. Will had been here only hours ago. You spot Dustinâs bike laying on the grass, haphazardly thrown as usual.Â
Dustin is just taking off his coat when you enter, immediately running over to him to pull him into a bone crushing hug.Â
âY/N!â he squeaks in surprise.Â
âAre you okay?â You know youâre squeezing your brother harder than you need to, but God. Heâs safe, in your arms, and youâve now learned that not everyone can say the same about their own loved ones.Â
Dustin wiggles a bit, trying to break away from the hug, but you only pull him in tighter. âGeesh, no one died.âÂ
Normally youâd berate him, but you embrace his snarky comments. Theyâre what make Dustin so unique, his humor one of your favorite parts of him
When you donât respond, Dustin stops wiggling around and finally accepts the situation. âI love ya too, sis.âÂ
You giggle a bit, now pulling away. âAt least mom isnât home right now. The minute she hears about whatâs happened, weâll be on lockdown.â
Dustinâs eyes widen. âShit, youâre right.âÂ
âLan-â
âLanguage, I know.â
You ruffle his hair, now feeling a bit better. Dustin is still Dustin, so maybe everything will be okay. You and your brother go into the kitchen for your post school snack, and you call your boss to inform her that you canât make it to your shift. The words âfamily emergencyâ catch in your throat a bit, and Mrs. Waters is kind enough not to push it.
Dustin catches you up on his day, informing you about Hopper questioning him and the other boys.Â
You scrunch your nose at that. âIs that even legal?â
âUnsure, but it was awesome.â
âWill went missing, Dustin. It isnât âawesomeâ.â
Dustin tilts his head at you. âWell, I bet Will is going to have a blast hearing everything when we find him.âÂ
His words are so matter of fact, as if he already knows that Will will be found after all. His naivety worries you a bit, but you also canât help but indulge in his hope as well. Then you think about what heâs just said. âWait, whoâs âweâ?â
Your brother pretends he can't hear you, miming at his ears. âDustin-â
âWhat?â
âDustin, you and the boys canât just-â
âI canât hear you!â Heâs running to his room now with you quick behind his heels.Â
âDustin, I swear to God-â
âI gotta do homework, Y/N, bye!â He slams the door in your face.Â
You sigh. Thereâs no getting through to him, years of being Dustinâs older sister has taught you that, so you go into your room instead. You might as well get started on the assignments you missed today, and you have a huge chem test tomorrow, so youâll focus on that and keep an ear out for Dustin. Whatever heâs planning with the boys, you wonât let them do it alone.Â
After a couple hours of silence from Dustinâs room, you decide to call Jonathan. The line rings for a while with no answer, and eventually you give up. It makes sense that heâs not answering, heâs had a long day. You hope heâs asleep, but you know him better than that. Heâs probably holed up in his room, trying to distract himself like you are right now.Â
A loud thud from Dustinâs room breaks you from your thoughts. Then you hear a quiet âshhh!â that sounds suspiciously like Lucas, and you immediately throw on your shoes and a jacket and march outside.Â
Dustin is halfway out of his window when you arrive, and Mike and Lucas stare at you, caught red handed.Â
âGuys, I think she can hear us.â Your brother says, breaking the silence. Mike scoffs at him and Lucas groans.Â
You eye the three of them, unamused. âYour best friend just went missing, what the hell are you guys doing out here so late and alone?â
Dustin awkwardly finishes his descent down, finally landing on his feet with a thud. He secures his hat back on his head and goes to grab his bike. You block his path.Â
âIâm serious, one of you needs to start talking, now.âÂ
Lucas and Dustin look at Mike, who is their unofficial leader of the gang, and he huffs. âLook, Y/N, I like you-â
âHow thrilling.â You say, voice monotone.Â
The boy ignores you and continues to talk. âBut Will is missing, and we arenât just going to sit around and wait. Heâs our friend, we have to do something.âÂ
You open your mouth to speak, but Lucas interrupts you. âYouâre definitely our favorite sister in the group, so youâd be even cooler if you let us go.âÂ
Again, you try to respond, but this time Dustin beats you to it. âYeah, youâre like, totally cool already. If you pretend that you never saw us, thatâd be great.âÂ
âGuys-â
âAnd donât give us a whole lecture about safety. Thatâs all bull.â Mike says.Â
âBoys!â You scream. They all fall silent, not used to you ever raising your voice at them. Youâve only ever yelled at them once or twice, preferring to be the âcoolâ sister whenever you can, but right now theyâre seriously pissing you off.Â
âLet me speak.â When no one says anything, you continue. âIâm not going to stop you guys from looking for Will. In fact, I support it-â
âYou do?â
You shoot Mike a death glare, which promptly shuts him up. âYes, I do. However, Iâm not letting you guys go alone.âÂ
The boys all groan at this, acting as if itâs the worst thing in the world to have you tag along with them. You ignore their complaining and head over to where your bike sits against the porch. You zip up your coat, the chill from the night making you shiver a bit.Â
âNo arguing, or Iâll call all your moms. Ours included, Dustin.â
âWhy me?â
âLook, guys. Iâm proud of you for stepping up, but Iâm coming with. The last time I let one of you boys go off into the woods aloneâŠâÂ
The boys shift uncomfortably now, realizing how heavy the guilt weighs upon you. After a few beats of silence, Mike finally gives in.Â
âFine,â he says, pointing a finger at you. âBut the second you start to freak out, youâre gone.âÂ
You salute Mike, hopping on your bike as you all begin to bike away. The ride doesnât take long, since you live just off of where Will was last seen. Thunder rumbles when you all approach the crime scene, and you shudder a bit.Â
âItâs going to rain, guys.â You inform them.Â
Dustin looks up at the sky with uncertainty. âI think maybe we should go back.â
Mike is quick to shut down the idea, urging the others to keep going. You admire his loyalty to Will, and you figure itâs why the two of you butt heads so often. Out of the entire group, youâre the most similar to him.Â
Lucas and Mike go under the caution tape first, and Dustin hangs back. You place a reassuring hand on his shoulder. âWe can go back, you know.âÂ
He clenches his jaw, jutting his chin out a bit. âNo, Will needs us.â
Your brother puffs out his chest and follows after his friends, leaving you to take up the rear. More thunder rumbles and the rain begins to come down. You flip your hood up, thankful you remembered to grab a hoodie when leaving.Â
Mike guides the way with his flashlight, then Lucas, then Dustin, then you in the back. You make sure to keep your eyes on the three boys, scared that the second you look away theyâll be gone. The woods have always creeped you out, but you push your fear down to keep them safe.Â
âWill!â Mike calls out, the rain now pouring down on you guys.Â
âByers!âÂ
âWill, little bee!â You call out as well. He never liked when you called him that in front of the others, but tonight was an exception.Â
âIâve got your X-Men 134!â Your brother bribes, unintentionally making you laugh a bit. If Will is nearby, heâll surely come out to claim his prize.Â
Your foot catches on a tree log, and you slip in the mud before just barely managing to catch yourself. Itâs getting hard to see given how dark it is and the rain surrounding you. Dustin voices his concerns, only to be called a baby, and you bite your tongue. If you defend him, heâll only look more like a baby to his friends.Â
âIâm just being realistic!â He retaliates, which you commend him for.Â
âDustinâs right, guys. Itâs getting really bad out here. Weâre surrounded by a ton of trees, donât they attract lightning?â You ask, now paranoid that youâll be struck down any second.Â
âYou guys are being sissies.â Lucas taunts, annoyed as well.Â
You try to argue, but Dustin voices a thought thatâs been at the back of your mind. âDid you ever think Will went missing because he ran into something bad?â
You think back to how Hopper seemed worried when he investigated the Byers home. From what you can recall, he suspected that Will had been running away from something, explaining why heâd abandon his bike.
âAnd now weâre going to the exact same spot where he was last seen, and we have no weapons or anything?â
Maybe Dustinâs right. This definitely wasnât your best idea, and youâre regretting letting them follow through with their plan. For someone who claims to want to keep their loved ones safe, you really suck at it.Â
âDustin, shut up.â Mike voices, though he now looks a bit concerned as well.Â
âHeâs right, Mike.â You speak up, stumbling a bit in more mud. Your shoes are definitely ruined, now. âI was at Jonathanâs when Hopper showed up, he thinks Will was running from something.âÂ
The boys go quiet now, and when youâre about to suggest going home, you hear rustling in the bushes.Â
âDid you guys hear that?â Mike asks.Â
Your heart stops as the rustling continues and you all start to twist and turn, looking for the source of the sound. The rustling gets louder, almost as if itâs getting closer, and you tighten your hand around your flashlight, ready to use it as a weapon just in case.Â
Then, the light flashes upon a little girl, drenched in an oversized yellow shirt, shivering. Her head is shaved, but her small stature suggests to you that she is indeed a girl. You all stare at her, no one saying a thing. She stares back, a terrified look on her face that breaks your heart.Â
âHoly shit,â you whisper.Â
Her eyes land on you; something about her reminds you of Will, and you know that nothing will be the same again.

Some more obscure and / or underrated lesbian literature : An incomplete list made by a lesbian in hopes of making other sapphics happy
(I havenât read all of them)
Sorted by years (this rapidly became a history lesson of lesbian literature sorry Iâm a nerd)
Ancient times
(A good article about lesbians in ancient greece / rome)
Queen Zhuang Jiang ćșć§ (???- BC 690) / We know about Sappho and Enheduanna, but what about her? She wrote poems some of which were, uh, pretty gay. I learnt about her here. It is said than her poems are in The Book of Songs (which is a collection of ancient Chinese poetry). I couldnât find a lot about her but I found enough to believe than (hopefully) she was a real person and the internet isn't lying to me.
Dialogues of the courtesans - Lucian of Samosata (somewhere in the second century BC) / Basically Dialogues of the courtesans is a collection of dialogues between well, courtesans (prostitutes). Either between themselves or between clients. One of the dialogues is called âThe Lesbiansâ. Link to read (somehow finding a pdf of Dialogues of the courtesans is pretty hard but reading it chapter by chapter online itâs not??)
The Babyloniaka - Iamblichus (somewhere in the second century AC) / Lost novel, so all you need to know is here
Of course we canât forget this Pompeii poem
1200s
Bieiris de Romans (somewhere in the first half of the 1200s) / Bieiris was a French poet, and we only have one of her poems with us because the others have been lost. We donât know much (anything) about her, except that she was a woman, French, and who wrote about a woman called Maria. Some say that this mysterious Maria referred to the Virgin Mary, others than Maria was her gf, and others than she was writing in the perspective of a man (because obviously a woman writing about other women in a not so platonic way is unthinkable). Anyway, feel free to get your own conclusions, hereâs the poem (translated)
1500s
The Sword and the Pen: Women, Politics, and Poetry in Sixteenth-Century Siena - Konrad Eisenbichler / So while this is a modern book, it is the only one Iâve been able to find than includes Laudomia Forteguerriâs poems (1515-1555). Some historians considered her to be the earliest Italian lesbian writer. âAlthough only six of her sonnets have survived, all are testaments to the love she bore for other women, and five are specifically dedicated to Margaret of Austria.â
The Maitland Quarto / Manuscript (1586) / So, this is a collection of 95 scot poems, and poem 49 is pretty sapphic. Itâs technically anonymous, but it has been attributed to Marie Maitland (who transcripted the manuscript and is thought to have added her own poems there). The last lines mean â'There is more constancy in our sex / Than ever among men has beenâ, I havenât been able to translate the rest of it. The poem.
1600s
The Flower's Shadow Behind the Curtain - Ko Lien Hua Ying (somewhere in the 1600s) / It is said this book was written towards the end of the Ming dynasty (1368 to 1644). Itâs a erotic book, and chapter 22 includes an erotic story between two 16 year old girls. I found it in Sex in China: Studies in Sexology in Chinese Culture by Fang Fu Ruan (believe it or not, I donât just randomly know all this books, I did research)
Aphra Behn (1640-1689) / English writer, one of the first female writers to live through her writing. She was also a spy. She wrote a lot about women. âHomoeroticism is standard in Behn's verse, either in descriptions such as these of male to male relationships or in depictions of her own attractions to women. Behn was married and widowed early, and as a mature woman her primary publicly acknowledged relationship was with a gay male, John Hoyle, himself the subject of much scandal.â (here). She wrote a lesbian love poem (in the link before, it also makes an analysis of it). The poem: To The Fair Clarinda
Poems, Protest, and a Dream: Selected Writings - Juana InĂ©s De la Cruz (1648-1695) / So the thing about Juana is than every single spanish-speaking lesbian knows her (and loves her), but hardly anyone who doesnât speak spanish has ever heard of her, which is a shame, because sheâs an absolute icon. She was a Mexican nun who was also incredibly gay. You know how Sappho is called the tenth muse? Juana is also called the (mexican) tenth muse. Sheâs also called the phoenix of America, which is incredibly badass. She learnt how to read at 3 years old, at 8, she asked her mother to send her to college dressed as a man (her mother refused). She learnt and studied by her own, because she wanted to learn. She studied by cutting her hair (if she got something wrong or forgot something, she cut a strand of her hair as a punishment) because she said that âa head adorned with hair is worthless if itâs a head naked of ideasâ. When she was sixteen (important to note than she already spoke Latin fluently at 12, having mastered it in just a few lessons) the archbishop Payo EnrĂquez de Rivera heard of her, and decided to ask her to be the company lady of his wife (his wife and her eventually would have a relationship) and decided to test her intelligence. He got 40 (!!!) university profesor of all subjects, and they all asked her questions related to maths, literature, philosophy, etc. She answered all of them right. At around 21, she decided to become a nun (not out of faith, but because it was either becoming a nun and being able to continue her education, or marrying a man and stop studying. To her, the choice was clear). Also it is said she owned around 4000 books in her personal library. So yeah, an educated, extremely intelligent gal, who wrote lesbian love poems to her gf, and who was definitely not afraid to stand up for herself.
1700s
The Game of Flats - Nicholas Rowe? (1715) / Poem, âgame of flatsâ was an 18th century slang for lesbian sex. Link to read <- that website includes lots of 18th century queer history and poems like this one
The Sappho-an - Anonymous (1735 or 1749) / When I first heard of this I couldnât believe it. It sounds like an AO3 fanfic, or some modern erotic book (one of those than have a real person in the cover), or maybe a forgotten 1970s lesbian book. Itâs none of that. Itâs an anonymous poem written in the 1700s. The plot? The goddesses of Olympus are sexually unsatisfied because the gods keep on going after mortals (except Ares, heâs just too busy with war) instead of paying attention to them. The gods keep going after woman and male mortals, so Hera just says yknow what if they can sleep with men then we can sleep with each other. Sappho also appears. Link to read.
Fanny Hill, Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure - John Cleland (1742) / Ok fine, this one is not sapphic but the main character (female) does have sex with a woman at one point. This is basically an erotic novel. Very dirty (specially for the time period) and very banned in lots of places. The main character is Fanny, a prostitute. It includes lots of straight sex, some gay (mlm) sex, and two pages where Fanny describes in detail having sex with Phoebe, bisexual prostitute. Not sapphic, but thought it was worth mentioning.
1810s
Christabel - Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1816) / So, have you heard of Carmilla (1872)? If youâre reading this post, you probably have, if you havenât, itâs a classic (vampire) book than is said to have inspired Bram Stoker to write Dracula. Itâs also incredibly gay. Well, some say it was Christabel than was the inspiration for Carmilla. Of course we donât know this for sure, but the similarities definitely are there. Review from a reader: âwhat if we were the protagonist and villain of a never-completed sensual gothic poem (and we were both girls) / alternately: when you meet a wickedhot girl only she's SPOOKY but that's SEXY and turns out your dad and her dad were also gay back in the day before having a sexy gay falling-out and she's like 'babe let's get naked and hold each other close' and you're like 'âwait fuck I mean uhhhh I PRETEND I DO NOT SEE IT!'â I havenât read this one, however for what it seems Christabel is not explicitly a vampire. Since the poem is unfinished we donât know the end, and we just think sheâs a vampire because so many things used in here were also reused for vampires characterization (like not being able to enter a house unless invited)
1830s
Mademoiselle de Maupin - ThĂ©ophile Gautier (1835) / âA woman uses her incredible beauty to captivate both d'Albert, a young poet, and disguised as a man, his mistress, Rosette. In this shocking tale of sexual deception, Gautier draws readers into the bedrooms and boudoirs of a French chĂąteau in a compelling exploration of desire and sexual intrigue, and gives voice to a longing which is larger in scope, namely, the wish for completeness in oneself.â
1870s
Mademoiselle Giraud, My Wife - Adolphe Belot (1870) / âThe sensational Mademoiselle Giraud, My Wife tells of the suffering of a naive young man whose new bride will not agree to consummate the marriage. Eventually he learns from an acquaintance, to his amazement, that their wives are lovers.â In reviews it says than this is a homophobic novel (whoâs surprised) but âChristopher Rivers argues in his introduction that the protagonist's homophobic attitude toward lesbianism is ironically linked to his intimate homosocial bonds with menâ
1880s
Jill - Amy Dillwyn (1884) / âJill is the story of an unconventional heroineâa gentlewoman who disguises herself as a maid and runs away to London in search of adventure after her mother dies and her father is pursued by a Victorian gold-digger. Once in London she uses her position as lady's maid to become close to her mistress. Her life above and below stairs is portrayed with irreverent wit in this fast-paced story, but at the centre of the novel is Jill's unfolding love for the woman she works for. On the surface a feminist manifesto, Jill is a poignant story of same-sex desire and unrequited love. A new introduction tells the autobiographical story on which the novel is based âthe author's own passionate attachment to a woman she called her wife, but who she couldn't have.â
Mephistophela - Catulle MendĂšs (1889) / âTelling the story of Baronne Sophor d'Hermelinge, a woman as thoroughly martyrized by her creator as any other heroine in the history of fiction, in spite of the enormous competition for that title established by countless writers, male and female, it is one of the archetypal novels of the Decadent Movement, and one of the most striking, precisely because is it such a discomfiting piece of writing, the deliberately controversial nature of which has been further enhanced as its surrounding social context has changed over time. Highly influential, especially on the works of such writers as Jean Lorrain and RenĂ©e Vivien, Mephistophela, in placing lesbian amour in the foreground of the story, deals forthrightly and intensively with a literary theme that had previously only been treated with delicacy and indecision, mostly in poetry. It is essentially a horror story about demonic possession, about contrived and cruel damnation, devoid even of a Faustian pact, which merely employs obsessive lesbian desire as an instrument of damnation.â Goodreads review: âAs a story it is quite straightforward. Girl has same-sex desires and the novel follows her various affairs up to about the age of thirty. [âŠ] More controversially, Stableford (and the books blurb) suggests that it is a novel of demonic possession. Now Brian has probably forgotten more than I will ever learn about the period but a few of the episodes show distinct Charcotian traits (an early childhood 'illness', two doctors in conversation etc) and a (really great) fantasy/visionary episode in the book seems to show, to me, the influence of Michelets book on witchcraft. If anything, the book seems even more subversive that Stableford suggests, as Sophie seems largely 'out and proud' and the author often says that she is 'is as she is' suggesting to me that it is 'natural' rather than demonic. I wonder whether the publisher asked Mendes to add some suggestion of the demonic to 'tone down' the idea that people were actually like 'that'.â
1890s
Avant la nuit / Before the dark - Marcel Proust (1893) / Short story (seriously, less than 10 pages). I read it the other day before bed and itâs pretty good. Talks about Françoise, a woman, revealing her homosexuality to her friend Leslie.
A Sunless Heart - Edith Johnstone (1894) / âIts first third focuses on Gasparine O'Neill, who shares an intense connection with her sickly twin brother, Gaspar. Living in poverty, the two struggle to live decently until Gaspar dies. Here gritty naturalism gives way to fantasy, as Gasparine is rescued from despair by the brilliant Lotus Grace, a much-admired teacher at the local Ladies' College. Sexually exploited from the age of twelve by her sister's fiancĂ©, Lotus cannot love anyone, not even her illegitimate child. Gasparine devotes herself to Lotus, but Lotus finds her final brief happiness with a woman student, Mona Lefcadio, a passionate Trinidadian heiress. Exploring issues of race, sexuality, and class in compelling prose, A Sunless Heart is a startling re-discovery from the late- Victorian era. The appendices to this Broadview edition provide contemporary documents that illuminate the tension between romantic friendship and lesbian consciousness in the novel and address other debates in which the novel the nature of Creole identity, the education of women, and the dangers of childhood sexual exploitation.â
The Songs of Bilitis - Pierre LouĂżs (1894) / Poetry. However, believe it or not, these were not written by a woman but by a man. Why add it then, well, the story is quite original. The author (Pierre LouĂżs) published this verses as written in Ancient Greece by a âdisciple of sapphoâ named Bilitis. He created this whole character, she was a woman, she was a poet, she was a sappho disciple, her work has been lost until now, and she was a huge lesbian. Of course, this is not true, but still, itâs an interesting read. âBetween their open celebration of lesbian love and the eventual revelation of their true authorshipâthe verses actually were written by French novelist and poet Pierre LouĂżsâthey became a succĂšs de scandale. Although debunked as a work of antiquity, The Songs of Bilitis remains a classic of erotic literature.â
1900s
A Woman's Affair - Liane de Pougy (1901) / "Despite her beauty and her riches, Annhine de Lys, one of the most notorious courtesans of 1890s Paris, is bored and restless. Into her life bursts Flossie, a young American woman, and everything changes. The love she offers Annhine is dangerous, perverse and hard to resist. Ignoring the warnings of her best friend, Annhine encourages the affair."
I Await the Devil's Coming - Mary MacLane (1902) / âMary MacLane's I Await the Devil's Coming is a shocking, brave and intelectually challenging diary of a 19-year-old girl living in Butte, Montana in 1902. Written in potent, raw prose that propelled the author to celebrity upon publication, the book has become almost completely forgotten. In the early 20th century, MacLane's name was synonymous with sexuality; she is widely hailed as being one of the earliest American feminist authors, and critics at the time praised her work for its daringly open and confesional style. In its first month of publication, the book sold 100,000 copies--a remarkable number for a debut author, and one that illustrates MacLane's broad appeal.â Sheâs pretty sapphic and claims her (female) lit teacher is her true love. Also an excerpt from a Goodreads review: âShe awaits the Devil to come and marry her and bring happiness if only for three days, meanwhile rehearsing suicide. She prays to the Devil to deliver her from âunripe bananas; from bathless people; from a waist-line that slopes up in the front" but offers sensuous instructions on how to eat an olive, and enjoys porterhouse steaks and fudge she makes with brown sugar. It's quite a ride. Many recent reviewers pigeonhole her as an ahead-of-her-time Goth or emo, simply transcribing an eternal and universal teen angst.â
Q.E.D. - Gertrude Stein (1903) - Autobiographical short story about a love triangle between three women; Adele (Stein), Mabel, manipulative and wealthy, and Helen, who seduces Adele.
A Woman Appeared To Me - RenĂ©e Vivien (1904) / I have no idea how to explain this book other than it's all I ever wanted and it has an absolutely breathtaking prose. Think of The Picture of Dorian Gray, Oscar Wildeâs writing style and descriptions, the character's philosophy, and the queer toxic relationships in the book. Now make it lesbian and even more explicitly queer. Also I'm pretty sure the main characters want to fuck Sappho. On the second chapter the main characters + some side characters (all women + one guy) are having a discussion (a symposium of sorts) about how much they love sappho and how believing she married a man is stupid and how they donât hate men, just really dislike them, and the guy says: "Mademoiselle, you are trying to hide from the irresistible seduction of the male. You will certainly finish your love-life in the arms of a man." And our main character being an icon finished the chapter answering him this: "That would be a crime against nature, sir. I have too much respect for our friend to believe her capable of an abnormal passion!". Itâs so good. I have seen mixed opinions on this one, but Iâm just gonna say: the girls than get it, get it. Everything by RenĂ©e Vivien is so good, but this is her only full novel I think (she also wrote poems and short stories). If you have to read only one book out of all the books in this post, let it be this one.
ZezĂ© - Ăngeles Vicente (1909) / Not translated (I think) but itâs the first lesbian novel written in Spanish which is pretty cool (even cooler than it was written by a woman who, in 1909 (or around it) divorced her husband and lived through her writing). The plot is basically, the narrator (the author) is on a ship and shares the cabin where sheâs staying with another woman, ZezĂ©, a cuplĂ© singer, who tells her about her life (her childhood in a religious school, where she discovered her sexuality with had a relationship with another (female) student, her life in Madrid as an adult and living life as a woman, etc)
1910s
Despised & Rejected - Rose Allatini (1918) / A gay man and a lesbian are friends during WWI, which they are against (an anti-war novel). I think the book is in the perspective of the gay man, but his friend is also a main character.
The Scorpion - Anna Elisabet Weirauch (1919) / A review by a reader: âThis book felt more like historical fiction than a novel actually written in 1919-1932, considering the explicitly lesbian relationships and coming of age and coming out style narrative. The story follows the life of Metta, a lesbian who grew up with a controlling family in Berlin. The narrative follows her from her first crush on her manipulative governess, to her first love the older and intelectual Olga, and her foray into the gay scene in Munich and beyond. The story isn't without suffering and it isn't just a love story despite how much you might want it to be. Definite trigger warnings for suicide (not Metta), poor mental health, homophobia and general cringe comments due to the time of writing. But the point of the book is for Metta to find a way to be, a way to live her life comfortably and happily, essentially to find herself.â
1920s
The Bacheloress - Victor Marqueritte (1922) / âMonique is an emancipated French woman who leaves home to escape a marriage of convenience to a man whom her parents have forced on her. She then succumbs to all sorts of carnal temptations including a lesbian love affair with a singer. The scandal provoked by Victor Margueritte's La Garçonne, here translated as The Bacheloress, led to its author having his legion d'honneur revoked, which only propelled this novel about a brazenly independent "new woman" to best-seller status. What was shocking then was not so much the reckless behavior of its heroine, who is depicted as the victim of psychological torment, but the portrait of the corrupt post-WWI society in which she lives. Authentic as Monique is, the types of love she encounters, set against the hostile and contemptuous portrayal of her peers, only amplifies her struggle.â
Yellow Rose - Nobuko Yoshiva (1923) / This is the only book than has been translated by this author, she was a lesbian who wrote Class-S romance (a Japanese book genre of the time, which focused on lesbian / homoerotic relationships between women [so-called romantic friendships], than usually take place in an all-girls boarding school). This specific story talks about a teacher-student relationship. She has other books, one called Yaneura no nishojo (two virgins in the attic) (1919) which isnât translated, but sounds good, the story âis thought to be semi-autobiographical, and describes a female-female love experience with her dormmate. In the last scene, the two girls decide to live together as a couple. This work, in attacking male-oriented society, and showing two women as a couple after they have finished secondary education presents a strong feminist attitude, and also reveals Yoshiya's own lesbian sexual orientationâ.
Freundinnen: ein Roman unter Frauen / Girlfriends: a Novel among Women - Maximiliane Ackers (1923) / Only in German, not translated. Review from an English reader: âThis novelâwhich went through several editions in the 20s before being banned by the Nazisâis uncompromisingly, heartbreakingly queer. The novel tells the story of the love between two actresses in Wiemar Germany, Ruth and Erika. Both women struggle to support themselves on the stage, to live independently, and to come to terms with their love for each other and how they might live and express themselves and their desire.â
Surplus - Sylvia Stevenson (1924) / Review from a reader: âThis book should be included in lists of seminal lesbian fiction. Published in 1924, Surplus is the story of Sally Wraith's young adult adventures after the end of WWI, during which period she served as an ambulance driver. The novel is not explicit and dos not detail a physical relationship between Sally and her romantic friend Averil but Sally refers to Averil as her "dream girl" with whom she wants to spend the rest of her life. This novel was published before Radclyffe Hall's Well of Loneliness , which is often hailed for its early negative portrayal of homophobia. But I find it compelling that Sally's love for Averil is not treated as deviant. It's just tragic for any babydyke to fall in love with a straight girl!â
The Captive - Eduard Bourdet (1926) / Theatre, âIrĂšne is a lesbian tortured by her love for Madame d'Aiguines, but pretending engagement to Jacques (man). Though IrĂšne attempts to leave Madame d'Aiguines and marry Jacques, she returns to the relationship, saying that it is "a prison to which I must return captive, despite myself". Madame d'Aiguines is not seen in the play, but leaves behind nosegays of violets for IrĂšne, as a symbol of her love.â Read here
Women Lovers, or The Third Woman - Natalie Clifford Barney (1926) / âThis long-lost novel recounts a passionate triangle of love and loss among three of the most daring women of belle Ă©poque Paris. In this barely disguised roman Ă clef, the legendary American heiress, writer, and arts patron Natalie Clifford Barney, the dashing Italian baroness Mimi Franchetti, and the beautiful French courtesan Liane de Pougy share erotic liaisons that break all taboos and end in devastation as one unexpectedly becomes the "third woman."
HERmione - H.D (1927) / âThis autobiographical novel, an interior self-portrait of the poet H. D. (1886-1961) is what can best be described as a find, âa posthumous treasureâ. In writing HERmione, H.D. returned to a year in her life that was peculiarly blighted. She was in her early twentiesâa disappointment to her father, an odd duckling to her mother, an importunate, overgrown, unincarnated entity that had no place... Waves to fight against, to fight against alone... âI am Hermione Gart, a failureâ âshe cried in her dementia, âI am Her, Her, Her.â She had failed at Bryn Mawr, she felt hemmed in by her family, she did not yet know what she was going to do with her life. The return from Europe of the wild-haired George Lowndes (Ezra Pound) expanded her horizons but threatened her sense of self. An intense new friendship with Fayne Rabb (Frances Josepha Gregg), an odd girl who was, if not lesbian, then certainly of bisexual bent, brought an atmosphere that made her hold on everyday reality more tenuous. This stormy course led to mental breakdown, then to a turning point and a new beginning as her own true self, as Her"
Lucia SĂĄnchez Saornil (1895 - 1970) / Spanish poet, putting her here because sheâs part of generation â27. Read her Wikipedia page because sheâs literally iconic (I canât put the link here for some reason). I love her so much. She was an anarchist and very revolutionary. She wrote under a pen name to be able to explicitly write about women and lived with her partner (AmĂ©rica Barroso) until she died. I havenât been able to find an English translation of her writing, but I do have found a French one, so better than nothing
Dusty Answer - Rosamond Lehmann (1927) / Coming of age story of Judith Earle, sensitive, lonely, who grew up as an only child, but with 4 neighbors (all cousins) to make her company (and eventually harbor romantic feelings for). Then she moves to college, where she meets Jennifer and enters a relationship with her. Although the relationship is not explicitly romantic.
Ladies Almanack - Djuna Barnes (1928) / âWritten as a medieval calendar, Ladies Almanack is a clever parody of the crazy sapphic circle of Natalie Barney and her AcadĂ©mie des Femmes. Sharp, biting, witty and transgressive, it is also a modern and pioneer in his vision of lesbianism and the issues surrounding relationships between women. The emotional endogamy, transvestism, motherhood, marriage or differences between sex and gender are already presented in the book with a charge of irony and acidity that is rare in the treatment of the topic. And it is also a breath of fresh air, an essential reference to know the world of lesbian women in all its breadth and diversity.â
1930s
The Angel and the Perverts - Lucie Delarue-Mardrus (around 1930) / "Set in the lesbian and gay circles of Paris in the 1920s, The Angel and the Perverts tells the story of a hermaphrodite born to upper class parents in Normandy and ignorant of his/her physical difference. As an adult, s/he lives a double life as Marion/Mario, passing undetected as a lesbian in the literary salons of the times, and as a gay man in the cocaine dens made famous by Colette." Technically not lesbian, but itâs âset in the lesbian cercles of Parisâ
Broderie Anglaise - Violet Trefusis (1935) / Technically not a lesbian novel, but by a sapphic author. Do you know about Virginia Woolf and Vita Sackville-West? Of course you do, everyone does. However, do you know than Violet Trefusis used to be Vitaâs lover? They dated as teens and again as adults. Thereâs this whole gay toxic romantic circle between Violet, Vita, and Virginia. Violet wrote this book where sheâs basically adding Vita, Virginia, and herself into the characters and dissing them. The plot centers on an encounter between Alexa, a celebrated English writer (Virginia), and her rival, Anne (Violet), and their discussion about their mutual lover, Lord Shorne (Vita).
Summer Will Show - Sylvia Townsend Warner (1936) / Sophia Willoughby's husband has a mistress who he cheats on her with. So she grabs him and packs him up to Paris with his mistress. She'll raise their children and he can have his mistress all day long if he wants, what she wants is to not see him. Sadly, her children die, and she goes to Paris, where she'll find her husband's mistress, and the two of them start an affair with eachother.
Diana: A Strange Autobiography - Diana Frederics (1939) / â«This is the unusual and compelling story of Diana, a tantalizingly beautiful woman who sought love in the strange by-paths of Lesbos. Fearless and outspoken, it dares to reveal that hidden world where perfumed caresses and half-whispered endearments constitute the forbidden fruits in a Garden of Eden where men are never accepted». This is how A Strange Autobiography was described when it was published in paperback in 1952. The original 1939 hardcover edition carried with it a Publisher's This is the autobiography of a woman who tried to be normal. In the book, Diana is presented as the unexceptional daughter of an unexceptional plutocratic family. During adolescence, she finds herself drawn with mysterious intensity to a girl friend. The narrative follows Diana's progress through college; a trial marriage that proves she is incapable of heterosexuality; intelectual and sexual education in Europe; and a series of lesbian relationships culminating in a final tormented triangular struggle with two other women for the individual salvation to be found in a happy couple.â
1940s
Hidden Path - Elena FortĂșn (somewhere around the 1940s) / Maria Luisa grows up on 1910s/1920s Spain. She is a peculiar girl, one who despises wearing dresses and wants to dress as a sailor, who could spend all day reading, who loves painting, and who swears she will never marry. Oh, and she's also a lesbian. Based on the author's life Maria Luisa is kind of the author's alter ego, and it follows her from childhood to adulthood while dealing with a world not created with people like her in mind. (Not published until 2016)
El Pensionado de Santa Casilda / The Boarding School of Saint Casilda - Elena FortĂșn (somewhere around the 1940s) / This book is not translated, but if you know spanish I recommend to pick it up. A group of 14/15 year old girls who go to the same spanish all-girls boarding school, and they are all in love with each other. It follows them into adulthood and how they navigate their lives being women and lesbians in the past (Not published until 2022). Messy lesbians at its finest. Like, seriously. Lesbians still in love with their ex and not over their first love, dating their friends and their ex friend, and the ex of their friend, and having sugar mommies, etc etc
1960s
Winter Love - Han Suyin (1962) / âAs a college student in London during the bitterly cold winter of 1944, Red falls in love with her married classmate Mara. Their affair unleashes a physical passion, a jealousy, and a sense of self-doubt that sweep all her previous experiences aside and will leave her changed forever. Set against the rubble of the bombed city, in a time of gray austerity and deprivation, Winter Love recalls a life at its most vivid.â
The Chinese Garden - Rosemary Manning (1962) / âA "very intelligent, sensitive, and compelling" novel of adolescent rebellion and sexual awakening at a girls' boarding school (Anthony Burgess). Set in a repressive British girls' boarding school in the late 1920sâwhere not only sexuality but femininity is squashedâthe novel is the coming-of-age story of sixteen-year-old Rachel, a sensitive, bright, and innocent student. Rachel finds refuge from the Spartan conditions, strict regime, fierce discipline, and formidable headmistress at Bampfield in a secret garden. She also finds friendship there, with a rebellious girl named Margaret. As Margaret has her mind expanded by a scandalous tome entitled The Well of Loneliness, she engages in a bold, forbidden actâthe ultimate transgression at Bampfieldâand Rachel is drawn into the turmoil. Confronted with the persecution of her friend and troubled by a growing awareness of her own sensuality, Rachel faces an imposible choice that drives her to desperate measures.â
The Microcosm - Maureen Duffy (1966) / âAt the House of Shades, Matt, a bar-room philosopher, tries to make sense of the disparate lives which cross here -- of Judy who saves herself and her finery for a Saturday night lover, of Steve the gym teacher who dreads a chance encounter with a pupil in this twilight environment, and of Matt herself, who needs these vicarious exchanges despite the security of her relationship with Rae and her sense that this lesbian sanctuary is a prison too, enforcing the guilt and estrangement of the city streets beyond. Elsewhere there are women such as Marie, trapped within an unwanted marriage and unable to admit her sexuality, and Cathy, for whom the discovery that she is not 'the only one in the world' is an affirmation of her existence. With its innovative structure and style, perfectly mirroring the voices and experiences of women forced by society to live on the margins, The Microcosm remains as powerful today as when originally published in 1966.â
1970s
Beginning with O - Olga Broumas (1977) / A poetry collection by a lesbian, greek writer.
The Same Sea as Every Summer - Esther Tusquets (1978) / A stream-of-consciousness type book, by an author who has been compared to Virginia Woolf. âPoetic and erotic, El mismo mar de todos los veranos ( The Same Sea As Every Summer ) was originally published in Spain in 1978, three years after the death of Franco and in the same year that government censorship was abolished. But even in a new era that fostered more liberal attitudes toward divorce, homosexuality, and women's rights, this novel by Esther Tusquets was controversial. Its feminine view of sexuality (in particular, its depiction of a lesbian relationship) was unprecedented in Spanish fiction. The disillusioned narrator of The Same Sea As Every Summer is a middle-aged woman whose unhappy life prompts a journey into she past to rediscover a more authentic self. However, events force her to realize that love or trust will inevitably be repaid by betrayal. This pattern assumes various forms in a story that moves forward as well as backward, playing out in Barcelona among the haute bourgeoisie. Richly textured with allusion, The Same Sea As Every Summer is also a commentary on post-Civil War Spanish society by an author who grew up during the repressive Franco regime.â
AsĂ es: Mi vida 3 - Victorina DurĂĄn (somewhere in the late 1970s) / So, not translated but has great historical value. Basically, this is the third book out of Victorinaâs memories that she wrote in the 70s. Victorina (1899 - 1993) was so cool. She was an icon. She was a sceneographer, a painter, a costume designer, writer (aside from her memories, she has some theatre plays), etc. She actually wanted to be an actress. She was part of the CĂrculo SĂĄfico de Madrid (the sapphic club of Madrid, a club made out of her and her friends, who were sapphic) among others. She never hid her sexuality. She was friends with almost all the importante well known people in 1920s / 1930s Spain. This book is the third one out of her memories, and itâs focused explicitly on her relationships (all with women). She said she wanted to focus on them and give them a book of their own, so this is of great historical value, giving insights into the queer spaces, lesbian scene, wlw relationships and being gay at that time. I need to read it so bad if someone has a pdf please tell me Iâll send them my fanfic wips
1980s
On Strike against God - Joanna Russ (1980) / âA lost feminist masterwork by feminist and speculative fiction icon, Joanna Russ, about a young lesbian's coming-to-consciousness during the social upheaval of the 1970s. When Esther, a recently divorced professor, has her first lesbian love affair, the fallout brings her everyday miseries into focus and precipitates a personal crisis. She flees her small, upstate New York college town, grapples with gender confusion and the ghosts of therapists past, and fumbles her way through comedic sexual self-discovery, oscillating all the while between visionary confidence and debilitating self-doubt. Confronted with the homophobia of straight feminists and the misogyny of gay men, Esther is left to forge a language for her feminism and her burgeoning lesbian desire. On Strike Against God is quintessentially experimental but accesible, alternately wry and earnest, poignantly didactic, playful, and emotionally charged.â From a review: âFor anyone like me who's unfamiliar with the quote which inspired the title: A judge was sentencing a picketer from the early twentieth century shirtwaist-makers strike (the first large scale strike by women), and he told her, "You are striking against God and Nature, whose law is that man shall earn his bread by the sweat of his brow. You are on strike against God!"
Faultline - Sheila Ortiz Taylor (1982) / âAn outrageous, zesty, funny Lesbian novel; the adventures of a Lesbian mother with six children, three hundred rabbits, and very relaxed attitude."
The Swashbuckler - Lee Lynch (1985) / "Frenchy Tonneau leaves her closeted home in the Bronx for the bars of New York City, the freedom of Provincetown, and the liberation of Greenwich Village in the 1960s and 1970s. Her hangouts, her women, her small yet universal world tell the stories of the times - and the stories of lesbians today. A timeless journey and a riveting read, The Swashbuckler is heart-wrenching, heartwarming, and unforgettable." Butch main character, lesbian life in the 60s/70s, lesbian-feminism, butchfemme, etc.
Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop CafĂ© - Fannie Flagg (1987) / listen, LISTEN, I know this book is not obscure, absolutely not given it even has a movie adaptation, but people do not give this book the love it deserves. I'm constantly thinking about Idgie and Ruth, they are one of my favorite fictional couples ever, and also my favorite lesbian fictional couple. They are such interesting characters with such an interesting dynamic and I just love them so so much. A femmebutch couple in 1920s Alabama, who go through many hardships but still find eachother, still end together, and even have a restaurant, live together, and raise a kid. And not only them, but the book is made out of 4 main characters (or 3 depends on if you see Ninny as a main character or not), Idgie, Ruth, and Ninny and Evelyn. Evelyn, an 80s depressed housewife in her 40s finds solace and a true friend in Ninny, a 90 year old woman staying at a nursing home (not âcause she needs it, but to keep a friend company). Ninny tells her the story of Idgie (her, kind of, sister) and Ruth, her best friend and lover. Evelyn finds feminism and hope through the memories, getting inspired by Idgie and Ruth's story and becoming happier in her life. It has several points of views and it jumps between years (first 1980s, then 1920s, then 1940s, then 1980s again, etc) and it also talks a lot about racism in 1920s Alabama, and i'll just stop because I love this book so much and i could go on forever. Oh, and also they murder a man and feed him to a police officer.
Lovers' choice - Becky Birtha (1987) / A collection of eleven short stories about lesbian women.
1990s
Out Of Time - Paula Martinac (1990) / Susan finds an old photograph album with pictures from the 1920s, all pictures being of a group of women (four in total). She's told it's not for sale, but she steals it anyway. After some digging, she finds out than two of the girls from the photos were lovers! And not only is Susan trying to navigate the details of her life and of her relationship with her own girlfriend, but she obsesses over the women in the picture, and eventually, the spirits of the girls start to haunt her.
The Gilda Stories - Jewele Gomez (1991) / Gilda escaped from slavery in the 1850s, until she's taken by a vampire who (consensually) turns her into a vampire too. Gilda moves through the decades finding community and connections and helping people, and slowly builds a place for herself in time. (Fine, not actually obscure since Iâve seen it all around the internet, but it just sounds so good)
Annabel and I - Chris Anne Wolfe (1996) / Plot summed up by a reader: âHalf-orphaned Jenny-Wren spends her summers at her uncle Jake's fishing lodge on Lake Chautauqua. One summer day when she's twelve years old while boating with her uncle, she finds a girl on the end of a dock reaching futilely for her escaped model boat. Jenny swims over and rescues the boat, meeting the orphaned Annabel, spending her summers at her grandmother's summer estate. This begins a friendship that endures and grows for years as the two girls spent each summer together, only to be separated at the end of summer. As the two grow older, they realize a magic is at work that keeps bringing them together, despite the near century between them. As the summers come and go, the two young women discover their love for each other, and the realization that their love is imposible. Can their love persist beyond those fleeting summers and flourish, in the face of time?â. Review from a reader: âThe foreword says this book is for all wlw, and that, "Because there are as many different ways to love a woman as there are women who love women; it's the loving, not the label, that really matters." That really captured the core of what this book does, it treasures the love we create with our bare hands for and with another woman.â A time travel romance (Jenny is from the 1980s, Annabel from 1890s)
Ain't Gonna Be the Same Fool Twice - April Sinclair (1996) / Bisexual mc. âJean "Stevie" Stevenson, the indomitable heroine of "Coffee Will Make You Black," is backâsomewhat older and wiser, with some experience and a college degree -- diving headfirst into the hot tub, free love, yoga, and vegetarian lifestyle of 1970s San Francisco. In this liberating new world of raised consciousness, mind-expanding, and disco-dancing, a soul sister with passion and daring has room to experiment with life and love to find out who she "really" is.â
Beyond the Pale - Elana Dykewomon (1997) / âThe story of two Jewish women living through times of darkness and inhumanity in the early 20th century, capturing their undaunted love and courage in luminous and moving prose. The richly textured novel details Gutke Gurvich's odyssey from her apprenticeship as a midwife in a Russian shtetl to her work in the suffrage movement in New York. Interwoven with her tale is that Chava Meyer, who was attended by Gurvich at her birth and grew up to survive the pogrom that took the lives of her parents. Throughout the book, historical background plays a large part: Jewish faith and traditions, the practice of midwifery, the horrific conditions in prerevolutionary Russia and New York sweatshops, and the determined work of labor unionists and suffragists." While it is a romance, it's also more than that, it's about the life of Jewish women in the 20th century.
Crystal Diary - Frankie Hucklenbroich (1997) / âFrankie Hucklenbroich's razor-edged, compelling, often wryly humorous story hustles us from the blood-and-beer-drenched corners of her St. Louis meat-packing district '50s youth, through the sex-soaked Hollywood alleys of her '60s baby butch years, into the druggy metropolis of '70s San Francisco. Moving relentlessly from one woman to another until faces and bodies blur, scamming her existence, learning what the street has to how to make a buck, how to make it with a woman, how to court the dangers of crystal meth, how to survive.â
Hers 3 - Terry Wolverton (1999) / Short stories
2000s
Valencia - Michelle Tea (2000) / "Valencia is the fast-paced account of one girl's search for love and high times in the drama-filled dyke world of San Francisco's Mission District. Through a string of narrative moments, Tea records a year lived in a world of girls: there's knife-wielding Marta, who introduces Michelle to a new world of radical sex; Willa, Michelle's tormented poet-girlfriend; Iris, the beautiful boy-dyke who ran away from the South in a dust cloud of drama; and Iris's ex, Magdalena Squalor, to whom Michelle turns when Iris breaks her heart."
Naked in the Promised Land: A Memoir - Lillian Faderman (2003) / âBorn in 1940, Lillian Faderman is the only child of an uneducated and unmarried Jewish woman who left Latvia to seek a better life in America. Lillian grew up in poverty, but fantasised about becoming an actress. When her dreams led to the dangerous, seductive world of the sex trade and sham-marriages in Hollywood of the fifties, she realised she was attracted to women, and that show-biz is as cruel as they say. Desperately seeking to make her life meaningful, she studied at Berkeley; paying her way by working as a pin-up model and burlesque dancer, hiding her lesbian affairs from the outside world. At last she became a brilliant student and the woman who becomes a loving partner, a devoted mother, an acclaimed writer and ground-breaking pioneer of gay and lesbian scholarship. Told with wrenching immediacy and great power, Naked in the Promised Land is the story of an exceptional woman and her remarkable, unorthodox life.â
Her Naked Skin - Rebecca Lenkiewicz (2008) / Theatre. âMilitancy in the Suffragette Movement is at its height. Thousands of women of all classes serve time in Holloway Prison in their fight to gain the vote. Amongst them is Lady Celia Cain who feels trapped by both the policies of the day and the shackles of a frustrating marriage. Inside, she meets a young seamstress, Eve Douglas, and her life spirals into an erotic but dangerous chaos. London 1913. A crucial moment when, with emancipation almost in sight, women refuse to let the establishment stand in their way.â
The Rain Before it Falls - Jonathan Coe (2008) / âA story of three generations of women whose destinies reach from the English countryside in World War Il to London, Toronto, and southern France at the turn of the new century. Evacuated to Shropshire during the Blitz, eight-year-old Rosamond forged a bond with her cousin Beatrix that augured the most treasured and devastating moments of her life. She recorded these memories sixty years later, just before her death, on cassettes she bequeathed to a woman she hadn't seen in decades. When her beloved niece, Gill, plays the tapes in hopes of locating this unwitting heir, she instead hears a family saga swathed in promise and the story of how Beatrix, starved of her mother's affection, conceived a fraught bloodline that culminated in heart-stopping tragedyâits chief victim being her own granddaughter. And as Rosamond explores the ties that bound these generations together and shaped her experience all along, Gill grows increasingly haunted by how profoundly her own recollections--not to mention the love she feels for her grown daughters, listening alongside her-- are linked to generations of women she never knew. A stirring, masterful portrait of motherhood and family secrets, "The Rain Before It Falls" is also a meditation on the tapestries we weave out of the past, whether transcendent or horrific.â
2010s
When We Were Outlaws - Jeanne Cordova (2011) / "A sweeping memoir, a raw and intimate chronicle of a young activist torn between conflicting personal longings and political goals. When We Were Outlaws offers a rare view of the life of a radical lesbian during the early cultural struggle for gay rights, Women's Liberation, and the New Left of the 1970s. Brash and ambitious, activist Jeanne Cordova is living with one woman and falling in love with another, but her passionate beliefs tell her that her first duty is "to the revolution".âto change the world and end discrimination against gays and lesbians."
Call Me Esteban - Leila KalamuiĂ© (2015) / âWith unapologetic vividness, Lejla Kalamujic depicts pre- and post-war Sarajevo by charting a daughter coping with losing her mother, but discovering herself. From imagined conversations with Franz Kafka to cozy apartments, psychiatric wards, and cemeteries, Call Me Esteban is a piercing meditation on a woman grasping at memories in the name of claiming her identity.â
Jigsaw Youth - Tiffany Scandal (2015) / âLose your best friend because you finally Came Out. Spend days driving aimlessly because there's nothing to do. Serve your rapist breakfast because you need your job. Fall asleep to gunshots and sirens because that's the only sense of home you've ever known. Hold hands with ghosts. Your life is in pieces, but you can't be broken. Wipe off the blood. Tired of being told who to be, what to wear, how to act and who to fuck. Break the rules and learn fast how to never get caught. All you need is nothing, but you're happy with your car, guitar and camera. Throwing around polaroids of tits like they're money, you swap stories about adventures and realize that we're all running away from something.â
Creatures of Will & Temper - Molly Tanzer (2017) / Recommended as a sapphic picture of dorian gray retelling, it tells the story of Dorina (hedonistic, art lover, and woman-kisser), her older sister Evadne (fencer and responsable), Lady Henrietta (suit-wearing, cigar-smoking lesbian who is a horrible influence), and Basil, Dorina and Evadne's uncle, and who's character has not changed much. They also summon demons.
The Adventures of China Iron - Gabriela Cabezïżœïżœn CĂĄmara (2017) / â1872. The pampas of Argentina. China is a young woman eking out an existence in a remote gaucho encampment. After her no-good husband is conscripted into the army, China bolts for freedom, setting off on a wagon journey through the pampas in the company of her new-found friend Liz, a settler from Scotland. While Liz provides China with a sentimental education and schools her in the nefarious ways of the British Empire, their eyes are opened to the wonders of Argentina's richly diverse flora and fauna, cultures and languages, as well as to the ruthless violence involved in nation-building. This subversive retelling of Argentina's foundational gaucho epic MartĂn Fierro is a celebration of the colour and movement of the living world, the open road, love and sex, and the dream of lasting freedom. With humour and sophistication, Gabriela CabezĂłn CĂĄmara has created a joyful, hallucinatory novel that is also an incisive critique of national myths.â
2020s
Thirst - Marina Yuszczuk (2020) / âAcross two different time periods, two women confront fear, loneliness, mortality, and a haunting yearning that will not let them rest. It is the twilight of Europe's bloody bacchanals, of murder and feasting without end. In the nineteenth century, a vampire arrives from Europe to the coast of Buenos Aires and, for the second time in her life, watches as villages transform into a cosmopolitan city, one that will soon be ravaged by yellow fever. She must adapt, intermingle with humans, and be discreet. In present-day Buenos Aires, a woman finds herself at an impasse as she grapples with her mother's terminal illness and her own relationship with motherhood. When she first encounters the vampire in a cemetery, something ignites within the two women-and they cross a threshold from which there's no turning back. With echoes of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein and written in the vein of feminist Gothic writers like Shirley Jackson, Daphne du Maurier, and Carmen Maria Machado, Thirst plays with the boundaries of genre while exploring the limits of female agency, the consuming power of desire, and the fragile vitality of even the most immortal of creatures.â Lesbian vampires!
The Lives We Left Behind - Olivia Bratherton-Wilson (2021) / I read this one so long ago and I donât remember everything with detail, just than I really liked it. â1943. Seventeen-year-old Dorotea Miller is given the responsibility of managing the family farm when her father and brother are conscripted, leaving her with only her distant mother and the unfamiliar Land Girls for company. Angeline Carter and her four younger brothers are evacuated to the Welsh countryside to escape the bombings; the Miller farm is nothing like they've seen before and certainly more than Angeline bargained for when she meets the surly, unwelcoming farmer's daughter. Despite their rocky start, misunderstandings and tragedies, Dorothea and Angeline realise that their friendship may run deeper than either of them had prepared for.â There is also a sequel! That one I havenât read tho.
Agatha of Little Neon - Claire Luchette (2021) / "Agatha has lived every day of the last nine years with her sisters (the other nuns) : they work together, laugh together, pray together. Their world is contained within the little house they share. The four of them are devoted to Mother Roberta and to their quiet, purposeful life. But when the parish goes broke, the sisters are forced to move. They land in Woonsocket, a formermill town now dotted with wind turbines. [âŠ] Agatha is forced to venture out into the world alone, to teach math at a local all-girls high school, where for the first time in years she will have to reckon with what she sees and feels all on her own. Who will she be if she isn't with her sisters? These women, the church, have been her home--or has she just been hiding? [âŠ] It is a novel about female friendship and devotion, the roles made available to us, and how we become ourselves." Lesbian nuns
Burning Butch - R/B Mertz (2022) / A butch lesbian memoir of their life growing up catholic and surviving in the world, while dealing with faith and what it shape it takes to them.
London on My Mind - Clara Alves (2022) / So, the English translation just came out! Funny thing is, I started this in 2022 even tho I donât know Portuguese (translating paragraph by paragraph with google translate) and it was pretty good. I havenât finished it (translating a whole book with google translate is definitely work) but Iâm so ready to read it now that itâs translated. Dayana (seventeen, black, plus size, and Brazilian) is forced to move to London with her father (who abandoned her mother and her) and his new family after her mother died. Sheâs having a pretty horrible time, until, on a walk, finds a redhead girl⊠escaping Buckingham Palace?? So of course, she helps her escape. Who exactly is this girl? Why was she escaping?? The answer, her name is Diana and sheâs sort of (super) the princess of Wales. Huh.
Helen House - Kayla Kumari Upadhyaya (2022) / âRight before meeting her girlfriend Amber's parents for the first time, the unnamed narrator of Helen House learns that she and her partner share a similar both of their sisters are dead. As the narrator wonders what else Amber has been hiding, she struggles with her own secret--using sex as a coping mechanism--as well as confusion and guilt over whether she really cares about Amber, or if she's only using her for sex. When they arrive at the parents' rural upstate home, a quaint but awkward first meeting unravels into a nightmare in which the narrator finds herself stranded in a family's decades-long mourning ritual. At turns terrifying and erotic, Helen House is a queer ghost story about trauma and grief.â
Promises in Pompeii - Violet Morley (2022) / Set in Ancient Rome, it tells the story of two girls, Octavia and Helvia, childhood friends, and their journey through life as women and through their feelings. In the author ig, she said it includes: adventure/survival, against the odds, brothels, butch/femme, coming of age, disguised as a man, first love, friends to lovers, opposites attract, etc. Iâm currently reading it, and I really like it so far.
Nettleblack - Nat Reeve (2022) / âSubversive and playful, Nettleblack is a neo-Victorian queer farce that follows a runaway heir/ess and an organisation of crime-fighting misfits as they struggle with the misdeeds besieging a rural English town. The year is 1893. Having run away from her family home to escape an arranged marriage, Welsh heiress Henrietta âHenryâ Nettleblack finds herself ambushed, robbed, and then saved by the mysterious Dallyangle Division - part detective agency, part neighbourhood watch. Desperate to hide from her older sisters, Henry disguises herself and enlists. But the Division soon finds itself under siege from a spate of crimes and must fight for its very survival. Assailed by strange feelings for her new colleague - the tomboyish, moody Septimus - Henry quickly sees that she's lost in a small rural town with surprisingly big problems. And to make things worse, sinister forces threaten to expose her as the missing Nettleblack sister. As the net starts to close around Henry, the new people in her life seem to offer her a way out, and a way forward. Is the world she's lost in also a place she can find herself? Told through journal entries and letters, Nettleblack is a picaresque ride through the perils and joys of finding your place in the world, challenging myths about queerness - particularly transness - as a modern phenomenon, while exploring the practicalities of articulating queer perspectives when you're struggling for words.â
Sunburn - Chloe Michelle (2023) / In Ireland, the early 1990s, Lucy feels out of place in her small town. She falls in love with her best friend and she has to find a way to find herself, make a meaning out of her feelings, and hide the truth from her conservative small town and religious peers.
Lucky Red - Claudia Cravens (2023) / "A vibrant and cinematic debut set in the American West about a scrappy orphan who finds friendship, romance, and her true calling as a revenge-seeking gunslinger." Lesbian cowboys
Neon Roses - Rachel Dawson (2023) / âEluned Hughes is stuck. It's 1984 in a valley in south Wales: the miners' strike is ravaging her community; her sister's swanned off with a Thatcherite policeman; and her boyfriend Lloyd keeps bringing up marriage. And if they play '99 Red Balloons' on the radio one more time, she might just lose her mind. Then the fundraising group Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners comes down from London, and she meets June, a snaggle-toothed blonde in a too-big leather jacket. Suddenly, Eluned isn't stuck any more - she's in freefall. June's an artist and an activist, living in a squat in Camden. With June, Eluned can imagine a completely different - and exciting - life for herself. But as her family struggles with the strike, and her relationship with her sister deteriorates, should she really leave it all behind? From the Valleys to the nightclubs of Cardiff, London and Manchester, NEON ROSES is a heartwarming, funny and a little bit filthy queer coming-of-age story with a cracking '80s soundtrack.â
Tale of Three Ships - Darcia G. Laucerica (2023) / âIn a world under the thumb of an empire, pirates sail away searching for a breath of freedom. But even the ocean is tainted by the powerful nation that has spread lies about women being bad luck at sea. Glenlivet has never cared about the fear-mongering. Her ship welcomes those who are rejected and need a home. For all the sailor' s superstitions and "codes" of piracy the captain mocks every day, not leaving the docks when it's dark is a personal boundary she swears by ever since acquiring The Outsider about eight years ago. She just might have to break her own rules to protect her crew, escape the claws of a king who wants her dead, and murder the man who raised her.â Iâve heard so many good things about this. Lesbian main character, with mlm and trans side characters. Author in social media said it includes: Chosen pirate family, sirens, indigenous and latine inspired characters, anti-colonialism, and people fighting injustice and abuse.
How to Breathe Ash - Alex Nonymous (2023) / âEleanor Perrault doesn't know if there's a right way to handle being suddenly orphaned at sixteen, but it's definitely not the way that she's been coping with it. It's been two months since her parents died and despite her autism normally causing her to be even more emotionally volatile than most of her peers, she still hasn't even managed to cry over them yet. On top of trying to learn how to grieve properly, Eleanor's juggling starting a new semester in a new town with an aunt who seems eternally disappointed in her and a cousin who's randomly decided to start hating her. And a crush on the incredibly pretty president of her new school's QSA. How to Breathe Ash is a contemporary YA Cinderella retelling following Eleanor through elaborate dances, anonymous chat rooms, and learning the right way to not be alright.â Autistic mc! While I havenât read anything from this author (yet) they have lots of wlw/nblw/nblnb books with autistic main characters.
War and Solace: A Tale from Norvegr - Edale Lane (2023) / âA battle-hardened shieldmaiden. A pacifist healer. Can the two find love amid the chaos of war? From Edale Lane, the award-winning, best-selling author of Sigrid & Elyn, comes a new Tale from Norgevr! Tyrdis is a stalwart warrior raised to value honor, courage, and military prowess. When a traumatic injury renders the powerful protector helpless, she depends on the lovely, tender-hearted Adelle to restore her from the brink of death. Is it merely gratitude or true love that draws Tyrdis to the healer? Defying cultural norms, Adelle despises violence and those who propagate it, but when her shieldmaiden patient saves the life of her beloved little girl, she must reexamine her values. Could Tyrdis be more than a stiff, efficient killer with an amazing body? In a kingdom steeped in conflict with their neighbors and internal strife, shocking secrets are revealed, and both women strive to ensure justice prevails. Can they overcome their differences to safeguard their friends, end the war, and fall in love, or will fate prove to be a cruel sovereign?â Historical fiction set during 643. The author also has another two sapphic books set in the same time period.
Maddalena and the Dark - Julia Fine (2023) / âA novel set in 18th-century Venice at a prestigious music school, about two girls drawn together by a dangerous wager Venice, 1717. Fifteen-year-old Luisa has only wanted one thing: to be the best at violin. As a student at the Ospedale della PietĂ , she hopes to join the highest ranks of its illustrious girls' orchestra and become a protĂ©gĂ© of the great Antonio Vivaldi. Luisa is good at violin, but she is not the best. She has peers, but she does not have friends. Until Maddalena. After a scandal threatens her noble family's reputation, Maddalena is sent to the PietĂ to preserve her marriage prospects. When she meets Luisa, Maddalena feels the stirrings of a friendship unlike anything she has known. But Maddalena has a secret: she has hatched a dangerous plot to rescue her future her own way. When she invites Luisa into her plans, promising to make her dreams come true, Luisa doesn't hesitate. But every wager has its price, and as the girls are drawn into the decadent world outside the PietĂ 's walls, they must decide what it is they truly wantâand what they will do to pay for it. Lush and heady, swirling with music and magic, Maddalena and the Dark is a Venetian fairytale about the friendship between two girls and the boundless desire that will set them free, if it doesn't consume them first.â
Greasepaint - Hannah Levene (2024) / âSet against a backdrop of 1950s New York, this experimental novel follows an ensemble cast of all-singing, all-dancing butch dykes and Yiddish anarchists through eternal Friday nights, around the table, and at the bar. In one of many bars, Frankie Gold sings while Sammy Silver plays piano after a day job at the anarchist newspaper. The Butch Piano Players Union meets in the corner next to the jukebox. Laur smokes on the back steps, sweaty thigh to thigh with Vic. Frankie's childhood sweetheart, Lily, turns up at yet another bar to see a second Sammy play every Friday night. And before all that, there's always dinner at Marg's. Fabulated out of oral histories, anthologies, as well as the fiction of the butch-femme bar scene and Yiddish anarchist tradition, Greasepaint is a rollicking whirlwind of music and politics- the currents of community embodied and held inside the bar.â
Perfume & Pain - Anna Dorn (2024) / âA controversial Los Angeles author attempts to revive her career and finally find true love in this hilarious nod to 1950s lesbian pulp fiction. Having recently moved both herself and her formidable perfume bottle collection into a tiny bungalow in Los Angeles, mid-list author Astrid Dahl finds herself back in the Zoom writer's group she cofounded, Sapphic Scribes, after an incident that leaves her and her career lightly canceled. But she temporarily forgets all that by throwing herself into a few sexy distractionsâlike Ivy, a grad student who smells like metallic orchids and is researching 1950s lesbian pulp, or her new neighbor, Penelope, who smells like patchouli. When Astrid receives an unexpected call from her agent with the news that actress and influencer Kat Gold wants to adapt her previous novel for TV, Astrid finally has a chance to resurrect her waning career. But the pressure causes Astrid's worst vice to rear its headâthe Patricia Highsmith, a blend of Adderall, alcohol, and cigarettes-and results in blackouts and a disturbing series of events. Unapologetically feminine yet ribald, steamy yet hilarious, Anna Dorn has crafted an exquisite homage to the lesbian pulp of yore, reclaiming it for our internetâand celebrity-obsessed worldâ
How It Works Out - Myriam Lacroix (2024) / âSurreal, darkly comic and achingly tender, Myriam Lacroix's debut sees a queer love story play out in many alternate realities. What if you had the chance to rewrite the course of your relationship, again and again, in the hopes that it would work out? After Myriam and Allison fall in love at a show in run-down punk house, their relationship starts to unfold through a series of hypotheticals. What if they became mothers by finding a baby in an alley? What if the only cure for Myriam's depression was Allison's flesh? What if they were B-list celebrities, famous for writing a book about building healthy lesbian relationships? How much darker-or sexier-would their dynamic be if one were a power-hungry CEO, and the other her lowly employee? From the fantasies of early romance to the slow encroaching of violence that unravels the fantasy, each reality builds to complete a brilliant, painfully funny portrait of love's many promises and perils. Equal parts sexy and profane, unsentimental, and gut-wrenching, How It Works Out is a formally inventive, arresting, uncanny exploration of queerness, love, and our drive for connection, in any and all possible worlds.â
All the Painted Stars - Emma Denny (@a-kind-of-merry-war) (2024) / âOxfordshire 1362. When Lily Barden discovers her best friend Johanna's hand in marriage is being awarded as the main prize at a tournament, she is determined to stop it. Disguised as a knight, she infiltrates the contest, preparing to fight for Jo's hand. But her conduct ruffles feathers, and when a dangerous incident escalates out of Lily's control, Jo must help her escape. Finding safety with a local brewster, Lily and Jo soon settle into their new freedom, and amongst blackberry bushes and lakeside walks an unexpected relationship blossoms. But when Jo's past caches up with her and Lily's reckless behaviour threatens their newfound happiness, both women realise that choices must always come at a cost. The question they need to ask is if the cost is worth the price of loveâŠâ The cover of the edition coming out in November is SO pretty and lately Iâve been looking for medieval sapphic books like crazy.
Gentlest of Wild Things - Sarah Underwood (2024 - out august 15th) / So this book is by the same author as Lies We Sing to the Sea, and Iâm in no rush to read that book (a so-called odyssey retelling even tho the author has admitted to never actually reading the odyssey??) but this one looks compelling. âOn the island of Zakynthos, nothing is more powerful than Desire-love itself, bottled and sold to the highest bidder by Leandros, a power-hungry descendent of the god Eros. Eirene and her beloved twin sister, Phoebe, have always managed to escape Desire's thrall. Until Leandros' wife dies mysteriously and he sets his sights on Phoebe. Determined to keep her sister safe, Eirene strikes a bargain with Leandros: if she can complete the four elaborate tasks he sets her, he will find another bride. But it soon becomes clear that the tasks are part of something bigger; something related to Desire and Lamia, the strange, neglected daughter Leandros keeps locked away. Lamia knows her father hides her for her own protection, though as she and Eirene grow closer, she finds herself longing for the outside world. But the price of freedom is high, and with something deadly-something hungry- stalking the night, that price must be paid in bloodâŠâ The author said that âGentlest of Wild Things is a sapphic vampiric twist on the story of Eros and Psycheâ
The End Crowns All - Bea Fitzgerald (2024 - out on July 18th) / âPrincess. Priestess. The most beautiful girl in Troy. Casandra is used to being adored - and when her patron god, Apollo, offers her the power of prophecy, she sees an opportunity to rise even higher. But when she fails to uphold her end of the agreement, she discovers just how very far she has to fall. No one believes her visions. And they all seem to be of one girl - and the war she's going to bring to Troy's shores. Helen fled Sparta in pursuit of love, but it's soon clear Troy is a court like any other, with all its politics and backstabbing. And one princess seems particularly intent on driving her from the city before disaster can strike... But when war finally comes, it's more than the army at their walls they must contend with. Casandra and Helen might hold the key to reweaving fate itself - especially with the prophetic strands drawing them ever closer together. But how do you change your future when the gods themselves are dictating your demise?â Sapphic retelling of the iliad where Helen and Kassandra end up together
If asked, Iâll also do one with gay books
(No 1950s lesbians because I donât like pulp fiction :( )

are there any shakespeare retellings you recommend? i really enjoy retellings but it's also difficult to find ones that like. actually understand the source material... i've read your novella duodecimal and really liked it btw! excellent take on twelfth night :-)
THANK YOU SO MUCH WAH... yes, i can recommend some retellings! i keep intending to make a big post with my recs, actually, but there are so many out there that i haven't read yet... so for now here's an incomplete list:
a thousand acres by jane smiley: the first one that came to my mind seeing this ask. it's a retelling of lear set on an american farmstead, and the adaptation is done beautifully and smoothly--it's just distinct enough from OG Lear that you can judge it as a book on its own but also as a lear retelling. and it's sooooo good. it starts a little slow, but the character work is so excellent and it almost made me cry (i will note that there's a pretty hefty cw on this one but... saying what it is is technically spoilers? but feel free to send another ask or message if you want to know up-front)
the last true poets of the sea by julia drake: books that made me have to turn my camera off in zoom class so i could bawl properly. books written for me specifically. this is a loose YA retelling of twelfth night (looser than some of the other retellings on this list) and it's like. perfect. the teenage dialogue actually sounds like teenagers. every emotional beat clubbed me over the head. the love triangle is present--and done really well; it's not present for drama but because sometimes being a teenager is confusing--but more than that this is a book about the relationship between violet and her sibling, and about mental health, and god it makes me CRAZY. also girls kiss in this one
rosencrantz and guildenstern are dead by tom stoppard: i mean. i think most people into shakespeare know r&gad. but in case you haven't read it yet, it's an absurdist play from the point of view of rosencrantz and guildenstern and it's absolutely fucking brilliant. not sure what else to say about this; you've really just gotta read it
teenage dick by mike lew: another play, this one on the modern side--a retelling of richard iii set in a high school, focusing explicitly on disability issues. kind of more a reimagining than a retelling, honestly, but i really like the exploration of r3's themes and also it's fucking hysterical. although i will say there's a kind of jarring tonal shift in this one near the end, so don't go to it for something 100% comedic
american moor by keith hamilton cobb: okay this isn't exactly a retelling but if you've ever read othello you have to read it. you just have to. please god if you've ever read a shakespeare PLEASE. it's a monologue from the perspective of a black man trying out for the role of othello, half-resigned to being pigeonholed into playing that specific role in a very specific way as directed by a white director, but also half-chafing against that resignation, and also exploring the complexities of loving shakespeare as a black man, and it's soooooo so good
exit, pursued by a bear by e.k. johnston: this one is kind of cheating because it's not really a retelling, in that it has next to nothing to do with the winter's tale except that there is a hermione character and a leontes character and a paulina character. i still think it's a very very well-done YA book, though, and one of the only ones i've read that deals head-on with abortion
foul is fair by hannah capin: okay, i will admit i read this one some years ago when i was more into YA, so i'm not sure i would still go crazy over it now, but the plot of this book is that the modern lady macbeth character gets assaulted by a guy at a party and decides to kill everyone who let that happen. and then she does. and idk i read it in two days it felt like being on crack
the wednesday wars by gary schmidt: this one is DEFINITELY cheating, because this isn't a retelling of anything. but if you like shakespeare and you're open to reading historical fiction about a kid in the 60s using shakespeare as a lens through which to understand the chaos of his life (from the vietnam war to his school crush)... it's so good. it made me nearly sob. beautiful book
i'm also a fan of ryan north's shakespeare choose-your-own-adventure books, but those aren't exactly retellings and also the humor will probably not work for everyone. but i like em <3
and finally, i would be remiss not to shout out the fact that @suits-of-woe wrote an INCREDIBLE retelling of the two gentlemen of verona that, like, redeemed the fact that that play exists. if you've read that play and you thought, "wow, i wish this were explicitly homoerotic, or not a rape apologia, or good in any way," you will LOVE macy's book. unfortunately it isn't fucking published yet but WITH YOUR HELP--
#max.txt#feel free to send me recs for shakespeare retellings at any time btw!#i've been collecting a list#i just haven't gotten around to most of the books on it yet#asks

Unlike Jo, Amy embraces her budding womanhood, which she feels empowers rather than diminishes her. At sixteen, she has the air and bearing of a full-grown womanâ and has âlearned to use the gift of fascination with which she was endowed.â Although not a natural beauty like Meg, the blonde, blue-eyed Amy easily succeeds at making herself into a fashionable work of art, gaining first the attention of Laurie's college friends, then Fred Vaughn, and finally Laurie himself. It is not only with men that she succeeds, however. She wins over her fellow art school students, the mean girls at the fair, and then her aunts, one of whom takes her to Europe. Once abroad, Amy blossoms further. âAlways mature for her age,â she now becomes âmore of a woman of the world.â She enjoys her power over men (including Laurie) and tears around Nice in her own carriage, taking the reins herself and yelling out to Laurie in the street, her âfree mannersâ scandalizing a French mother who hurries her young daughter in the opposite direction. Amy was the daring American girl abroad ten years before the publication of Henry James's Daisy Miller. In the end, of course, Amy wins Laurie and decides that she won't be an artist after all (because she possesses talent but not genius, something Laurie also discovers about his music). Readers often forget that Amy wants to become a famous artist because she gives it up so easily. She will become instead, as the wealthy Laurie's wife, âan ornament to society.â To many readers, Amy has seemed to be the clear winner among the four March sisters. In her New York Times essay âAmy Had Golden Curls; Jo Had a Rat. Who Would You Rather Be?â film and book critic Caryn James wrote that favoring Amy over the other girls was a "no-brainer." Pretty Amy went to Europe, had adventures, and married the dashing boy next door, while Jo lived in a dumpy boardinghouse in New York and married a boring professor. - Anne Boyd Rioux, Meg, Jo, Beth, Amy: The Story of Little Women and Why It Still MattersÂ

Things I Love and Dislove About Ikemen Games
These are my opinions!
CONTAINS ADULT CHARACTERS
You don't know how much this means to me because most of the time I try finding shoujo mangas I end up with stories that involve high school kids.
I'm a die heart fan of demon romance but majority of the shoujo manga that explores supernatural beings involves a 1000 year old demon king falling in love with a 16 year old high school girl. This sickens me not only because of the age gap but one of the party is a freaking minor.
As an adult, I'm so happy the Ikemen Games doesn't involve younger characters or at least characters that are 'minor' as a romantic partner.
MC's ONLY JOB IS TO SIMPLYFY THE STORY
I have said this before, MCs are just props to simplify the story and characters to us because the writers think we're too dumb to understand what the character is saying. They're like Paimon so that we don't use our braincells to understand the characters better.
I wish they didn't do that and have MCs backstories that describes their personality. I mean, all the MCs want to 'prove' to the male leads that they wanna be 'strong' but I'm tired of this trope.
Why does MCs have to always be innocent and prove themselves? Why does she always want to 'understand' the male leads? Can't we...for once have a romance that doesn't involve MCs teaching male leads true love?
Also STOP give MCs odd jobs! Book stall employee...letter carrier? I mean who is happy and satisfied doing this? How about giving the high-paying jobs like Auditor or Businesswoman or Scientist or etc etc...I know Mai is a fashion designer and businesswoman and Mitsuki is a travel agent turned maid. Alice is a baker and Yoshino is a pharmacist. The only MCs that continues to follow the path of their dreams is Mai and Yoshino.
MATURE ROMANCE
I enjoy seeing two adults slowly fall in love.
There is something different about teenagers falling in love vs adults falling in love. The romance is more realistic. They don't talk about how they're gonna plan their future together or which college they're going to go instead their chat is much more deep and that's refreshing.
NO BAD ENDINGS
Happy endings are nice. Everyone deserves one! But when there are no bad endings, the story won't have stakes.....and when there are no stakes, I can't take any gunshot sounds, blank screen and MCs saying 'Is this the end?' seriously.
Just stop being cowards writers! Put some bad endings!!
FAIR SHARE OF ROMANCE
Although I have played my fair share of Maiden games, majority of them are not that romantic.
I love cute romance moments to lighten up the mood and I really need them. Ikemen games delivers that too well....way too well...
I do have some criticism for random steamy scenes, I don't mind as long as they have context and mood.
The story is not so story focused all the time and also has time for mischievous romance which I like! It helps in calming me down and enjoy at the same time.
BULLSHIT GACHA SYSTEM AND NON-EXISTING GRINDING SYSTEM (Not very F2P friendly)
Even though Genshin's gacha system is shit (you need mf 90 wishes to get a guaranteed 5 star and 180 wishes to get the limited 5 star you want!) I still think it's ways better than the gacha system of these Ikemen Games.
Yes I agree that both the games are different in genre, one is an open world anime rpg and other is a maiden game with gacha mechanics. But that doesn't mean that I have to always pay to buy limited gacha tickets!! At least genshin gives us an open world to explore and grind primos (even though its time consuming)
Yes they do give limited tickets when you enter an event or complete the mission board but that's only ONE TICKET and you need 50 LIMITED TICKETS to get your guaranteed limited 5 star card. On the other hand, they give out many standard tickets but what am I gonna do with it if they aren't gonna update the standard banner?
These games are NOT F2P friendly and if you wanna...like say, want rank no.1 in an event you'd have to save a lot of items.
Ofc I know about the subscription thing and you do indeed get a lot of items, but the most essential thing for me is limited gacha tickets and diamonds because I wanna collect as many beautiful cards as possible and you don't get them from these monthly subscriptions. It's a waste of $5 very month. I'd rather buy a nice hair care or skin care items from that.
INTERESTING SETTINGS
I have my criticism in some of their stories but I can't deny that I LOVEE their story settings. Their premise for each game is solid to the point it makes me wanna actually try it.
This is something I find very rare in 'shoujo' genre.
For example, I don't like Vampire themed games because they suck! (both figuratively and literally) but Ikemen Vampire interests me because they take real historical figures and makes them vampire, which is a really cool idea! You don't know but I'd die to get myself in situation like that because it would be an honor to meet some great historical figures, chat with them and make them lose all their brain cells just like me. I would die to meet especially Isaac Newton and grill him for making those torturous physics theories that gave me brain tumors in my school.
Very cool setting! I can't wait to see what's in store for us in the future!!!
EVENTS ARE INSANELY BORING
I've never enjoyed a single story event from Ikemen Villains. They are boring and makes me fall asleep immediately at chapter 1. I think that kinda spread to Ikemen Prince because I barely open Ikemen Prince app now.
I honestly don't find the stories of these events interesting at all. It always feels like 'I have seen this before' maybe in some other game or some other manga.
And the Collections events.....yeah, I hate them! I wish they never existed!!! They keep the fan-loved characters at the butt-end of the list where 90% of the players don't even make it unless they burn their whole month's salary. I know that's why they do these anniversary elections because I bet if Sariel was the most voted character, his story would have been the most expensive one to get.
VERY LIKEABLE MALE LEADS
This is a personal thing but I love charismatic male leads a lot! Male leads with a lot of suave and beauty! Yes I care about these things when I play gacha games okay! I play gacha games to look at hot guys (because I know I'm never gonna get one in real life!)
But I also love that the devs puts an effort to make them feel good too. So I wanna give a shoutout to them!!! 'KEEP GOING!!! JUST DON'T MAKE TRIGGERING MEN WHO SAYS 'I'LL KILL YOU'!!!

my heart, my judgment and the future that I have chosen.
⌠đđđđđđđ: Andrew Garfield x Reader, eventual Andrew Garfield x Reader x Florence Pugh ⌠đđđđđđđ: you're with Andrew, and you're insanely happy and in love. but you know that you'd both be more in love and happier if you both had her. ⌠đ/đ: thank you for reading!! tagging @natashasera obv <3 the title is lovingly stolen from my animated husband Percival Fredrickstein von Musel Klossowski de Rolo III <3 <3 also slight spoilers for Critical Role C1, C3, and the book What Doesn't Break by Cassandra Khaw.
You'd had your eye on her for a while. How could you not? She was stunning. The way the sunlight lit up her fair skin, the way that tiny little crinkle appeared in the outer corners of her eyes when she smiled, the way her chest rumbled with that deep, electrifying voice that had captured you since the moment she had stepped on screen in front of you in Black Widow. You had noticed her, noticed everything about her, for longer than you had been in her presence, and she captivated you.
And, you were certain she had captivated your boyfriend too. You could see it in the way he smiled when she was near him, the way his eyes light up. It was rather similar to the way he lit up when you were around, but with her, there was something else to it. He seemed more guarded, almost. Like he was hesitant to admit to himself that he was drawn to anyone but you; that anyone else had aroused such happiness and curiosity within him, just like you had.
But, to your own surprise, you didn't feel jealous. Normally, you would have, but this time? All you felt was want. To have her, hold her, and to have her hold you. And knowing your boyfriend felt the same made that feeling inside of you grow every single time your eyes met her green ones, when you smelled that distinct smell of her flowery perfume, when you heard that laugh. You wanted her, you wanted him, you wanted both of them, badly.
The only problem was - you didn't know how to bring it up to him. You didn't know how to approach the love of your life and tell him that you had feelings for his costar, although you had known for a while he had feelings for her too. The idea of him being weirded out or you misreading his feelings for her as anything but friendly made you chicken out every single time you thought you had the courage to do it. So instead, you kept it to yourself. You internalized all those feelings, let them grow inside of you, but not letting them spill out.
Except, even the brightest of stars explode with enough time.
And when it did explode, it spilled out of you in every way it could find. It spilled out of your mouth as you fought to keep your voice steady when talking to her, seeped out of your skin anytime her body touched yours, flowed out of you in the silent tears that came late at night when you were sure Andrew was sleeping.
This night, however, you weren't as sure that Andrew was asleep as you usually were, but you couldn't find it in you to care. You had been scrolling on your phone, an episode from Campaign 3 of Critical Role playing quietly in the background for noise as you fell asleep. Not much had made it through the bubble of unreality you had unwittingly created, but one thing did. A single line, in Marisha's voice.
'The worst thing that could have happened to me already happened.'
To any other person it would have been insignificant. Not important. Just her, as Laudna, discussing the horrible things that Delilah Briarwood had done to her as a young girl. But to you? It wa the catalyst for everything you had been keeping inside exploding outward.
And no, you weren't a Hollow One. You hadn't been killed by Sylas and Delilah Briarwood and then hung on a tree as an effigy of Vex'ahlia Vessar, but you were someone who had always been scared of losing the love of your life, and you had finally found him, but now were worried you were going to lose another, or worse - both of them.
It began to explode out of you, your strongly built walls crumbling with the utterance of 11 simple words. Your phone fell from your hand and hit the bed with a tiny bounce. Your breath hitched, tears springing to your eyes as you, for the first time since these confusing feelings had over taken you, let yourself feel the fear and the want. Let the longing for her wash over you like a tidal wave, while slowly acknowledging the tsunami of fear you felt of Andrew finding out those feelings slowly creeping up behind that wave.
As that tsunami approached, your shoulder shook more, your hands covering your face, trying to keep your voice down, to keep the sobs inside, when suddenly it paused, and slinked backwards into the ocean of your mind when you felt a familiar, strong arm wrap around your waist.
"It's okay." Andrew's voice whispered, the storm of emotions he was battling with clear in the shakiness of his voice. "It's okay. I know." He whispered. His hand lifted slightly as you shifted, rolling over to face him, settling once you looked him in the eyes. "I know, and I feel the same way you do."
Your breath hitched slightly, a tiny firework of hope sparking in your chest. "Y-You do?"
Andrew nodded, a tear slipping down his cheek, chin wobbling, as his eyes roamed over your face, taking in the pain, anguish and want you had been holding in for far too long.
"Yeah. I do. I want her, but I also want you." He explained, pulling you closer. "I want you both in my arms, and in each others. I want to show her the same love and care I get to show to you, and I want her to show you the care and love you deserve; the kind that I can't give you, because I don't know how."
"I love you." You whispered. "I love you so much, and I want to love her too, but what if she doesn't?"
Andrew shrugged, sniffling. "Then we'll have each other. I would rather try, fail and still have you, rather than not try, and let these feelings tear us apart. Because I love you. You are the love of my life, you are my reason for breathing each breath in my lungs, and I know that if I lost you, there would be no oxygen strong enough to inflate them anymore."
You didn't respond, too overwhelmed by the love pouring from Andrew to respond, so you simply nuzzled closer into his warmth, your breaths steadying when you heard the rumble of his chest under your head, his hands on your back.
"So, let's try. Let's talk to her. Tell her how we feel; how much we want her. And who knows, she might even want us back."

Appearance:
Rosalind is described as a 16-year-old girl with sleek black hair that has bright blue tips resembling flickering blue flames, making it hard for others to look away. Rosalind has fair skin and a slender body, as if a light touch could make her fall. Her blue eyes are reminiscent of the ocean, always appear to be in a daze, as if she is sleep-deprived
She often wears a dreamy expression on her face, as if she is in a dream, even though she claims to be extremely alert
Rosalind has a modest height and is often the subject of jokes by the students of Night Raven College, but she rarely pays attention to or feels bothered by this
_________________________________
Personality:
Although Rosalind may appear to be a silly and easy-to-bully girl on the outside, she is actually an intelligent and strong person. Whenever her friends are in danger, she doesnât hesitate to rush out to protect them. Rosalind is also cautious and usually does not take kindly to people with suspicious appearances
Additionally, Rosalind is an animal lover and often brings many animals home, from stray dogs, cats to even rats and cockroaches, which drives her parents crazy. While this tendency has lessened as she has grown up, she still cannot control her desire to pet soft-furred animals
Rosalind also has a cold and ruthless side. If given the chance, she wouldnât hesitate to use her magic to deal with those who pose a threat to her and her friends
_________________________________
Backstory:
In an unnamed kingdom within Twisted Wonderland, Rosalind or formerly known as Seraphis - a Homunculus created by alchemists and sorcerers to protect the nation from external threats. Emotionless and programmed to follow orders, she was not seen as a hero, but merely a cold-blooded killing machine. Despite this, she had Grim, her only companion, and later met a knight who gave her a human heart and helped her experience true emotions
Together with Grim and her beloved knight, they planned to escape the kingdom and live freely. However, the ruling powers discovered their plan and captured them. To maintain control, they forced Seraphis to kill the person she loved most. Because she was created to follow orders, she couldn't resist. This event shattered her emotionally, and her suppressed magic spiraled out of control. Overcome with grief and fury, Seraphis lost control of both her powers and her emotions, unleashing a devastating magical force that burned the entire kingdom to the ground. Until the flames were fully extinguished, all that remained was a heap of ashes and scattered ruins. The kingdom Seraphis had spent decades protecting was buried beneath the ashes, lost forever, never to rise again
After the kingdom's destruction, both Seraphis and Grim vanished without a trace, and no one heard of them again.
After this event, Seraphis was somehow brought to Earth, transformed into an infant, losing all memories and having her powers sealed. She was adopted by a couple on Earth and named Rosalind Eiric. She grew up living a normal life, unaware of her true past. However, during an unexpected incident, Rosalind accidentally returned to Twisted Wonderland, the place where the unnamed kingdom once stood, beginning her journey to rediscover her past and confront her true identity
_________________________________
Unique magic:
"Once the final magic seal is unlocked, Rosalind will gain her Unique Magic"
From the ashes of despair, I rise. In the flames of my fury, I summon forth the guardians of the lost. Let the eternal fire burn bright!
"Ember of the fallen"
Summon entities from the ashes of those who have fallen, transforming them into fiery warriors to aid her in battle
_________________________________
Trivia:
Rosalind is inspired by Chernabog (The Fantasia) and Morgan le Fay (Arthurian legend)
Rosalind, or rather her past self, has been immortalized in the history of Twisted Wonderland and is referred to as "The Abyssal Sorceress" , her status is considered on par with The Great Seven
No one knows that Rosalind is "The Abyssal Sorceress'', not even herself, except for The Dark Mirror
After both of them disappeared, Grim also lost his original memories and form, and somehow appeared at Night Raven College
Almost all the students at Night Raven College initially believed that Rosalind was just a student without magic, getting into the school through "relationships" , only few people knew that Rosalind actually possessed magic
Since childhood, Rosalind had a habit of eating strange things she came across. While this tendency diminished as she grew older, it still occasionally happened. A prime example is when she asked Grim for a stone after each Overblot to eat, but Grim, annoyed, would refuse
Back in middle school, Rosalind was often bullied by her classmates because of her quirky personality and unusual hair. Her adoptive parents knew about it and talked to the principal and teachers several times, but nothing really changed. Rosalind rarely fought back, so the bullies kept pushing their limits. Eventually, when things got too much, Rosalind defended herself, and one of the bullies ended up getting hurt. After that incident, the bully's parents demanded action, and soon after, Rosalind's family decided to move away. They've been living in a different place ever since
Unable to rely on Crowley any longer, Rosalind planned to work as a waitress at Monstro Lounge. However, after discovering her singing talent, Rosalind was invited by Azul to become a performer at Mostro Lounge (of course, her salary was increased as well)
Although she may seem foolish and dreamy, Rosalind is actually very intelligent, she consistently ranks among the top 100 students with outstanding achievements without resorting to cheating or signing contracts with Azul
Crowley and Grim once tried to convince Rosalind to participate in the VDC, but she refused
After conducting research, Crewel stated that Rosalind is currently carrying eight seals. Each time one of these seals is unlocked, both her magic and memories will return
However, the return of her magic is not a good sign but rather an ill omen. In Chapter 3, after unlocking her magic, the overuse of it caused Rosalind to cough up blood and fall unconscious for several days. This could potentially lead to Rosalind experiencing an Overblot, so she has been strictly prohibited from overusing magic, and is only allowed to use basic spells
It seems that after unlocking the higher-level sealing floors, hypnosis magic has almost no effect on Rosalind. For example, in Chapter 4, Jamil and Jade's unique magic only influences her for a short time before it ends. Additionally, during the 'Stage in Playful Land' event, she was not affected by Fellow Honest's unique magic and even told him to stop his antics
Rosalind once had a boyfriend, as revealed in the card "Ace Trappola SSR - Ghost Marriage." She dated a good-looking guy back in middle school, and after a month of dating, she found out that the whole relationship was just a bet between him and his friends. He even insulted Rosalind, saying that no one would like someone as weird as her. However, after learning the truth, Rosalind didnât feel sadâor rather, she didnât feel anything at all, because she never really liked him, she had only agreed to date him out of curiosity about love and relationships
After each Overblot, the housewardens gradually recover fragmented memories where Rosalind was once part of their past. She appeared as a distant figure from their childhood, though those memories have faded over time. However, for Rosalind, these events seem like nothing more than a vague dream, something that never truly existed. Despite this, her presence in their past seems to be a crucial piece of their forgotten history

i know we've talked about jealous office nerd but what about girlie? like imagine they ran into his ex or a girl tried to flirt w him or smth
the girl who gets a trial week at the magazine before marianne decides if she wants to hire her - you're not particularly bothered initially when it transpires she's an art writer and thus will be in your and matty's department, but when she LATCHES onto your boyfriend and the questions go from "so is this word limit, like, set in stone? i just have so much to say" at the start of the week to "you know how i've written for frieze? well, i have an in at the team running the art fair, and i think you should come with me this weekend - they've given me a hotel suite we could stay in" at the end of the week... you can't even hear matty's reply from the desk across from yours because your rage is making the blood pump faster into your ears, and luke from film reviews just slides you a pack of cigs and whispers "i think you should maybe go and have one of these. you look murderous, mate" lmfao. but he doesn't have a light on him, so you actually do need to go up to matty and cut the girl off (while blatantly ignoring her) to say "matthew, i need to borrow your lighter" and respond "nope" when he offers to come for a cig too; you're not annoyed at him per se, other than the fact he hasn't told the girl he's with you (although tbf you don't tend to with new people for a minute, because you want to make the magazine seem strictly professional lmao), you just need to decompress alone. you do tell marianne what just happened, when you run into her on her way in, and she just rolls her eyes like "for fuck's sake. don't worry, her work's shit, we're not keeping her on. and don't worry about matty, either - he loves you, babe, and he's not about to throw that away for the frieze fucking art fair". she's right, of course - you don't know what he told the girl, but when you go back in matty moves to sit next to you and asks "can you take a look at this for me, please?", and on his laptop screen is a word doc saying "i love you. sorry about her. i didn't know how to nip her flirting in the bud without being a dick/ruining the professional relationship, and she took it too far. obv i'm not going with her to frieze (this year looks really shit anyway, would've taken you otherwise) and i told her the hotel room thing was inappropriate. and then i didn't hear any of what she said because i got distracted thinking about the inappropriate things we got up to in hotel rooms and also i booked a night away for us tonight so we can recreate them lol. but yes i love you so much xx". it's actually so cute, and you nod at him like "yeah. let me just..." and add a reply like "i love you too. just got a bit upset seeing her like that with you. but i'm sure you'll cheer me up at the hotel xo"; i mean, you do inadvertently end up edging him while you wank him off when you get there, just grumbling about the girl so much you stop moving ("'ohhhhh look at meeeee i've written for frieze ooh!!' i could fucking write for frieze if i wanted. she's not special" and matty's crying desperate to cum nodding like "you definitely could, baby, you're such a good writer FUCK please please just let me cum" lmfao), and while matty's fucking you you're giving it "nobody else feels as good as me, do they, baby? nobody else you wanna fuck, is that right? just me. you're mine, and i'm yours" and he's moaning into your mouth like "just you, only want you, only NEED you. love of my life". it turns a bit sweet at that point, honestly, murmured i love yous and kisses and all that, but it's still a dirty, dirty fuck that ends with cum in you and on you and matty practically passed out from how hard he went to prove you were the only one for him. kinda obsessed actually <3

I wonder if the series will adapt the brothel queens, since HBO is making TB the good guys and Rhaenyra the poor little girl who had everything stolen by the green usurpers.
I'd rather believe that Daemon will suggest it, because in this adaptation (and a bad book adaptation at that) all the men are bad. And if we also accept the fact that Rhaenyra is our legitimate queen, smart, kind, fair (very controversialđ€Ł) and she is made the face of the âfeminismâ movement, then she will not allow Daemon to do this and will mercifully spare Alicent and Helaena. This move will please tbs and add âone more thingâ to Rhaenyraâs feminism. (I say âone more thingâ because the script implies Rhaenyra is fighting the patriarchy, so everything she does is for the sake of women, although she DOES NOT have a single thing FOR women, only against).

Though compared to other characters and ships in the books, do you think that darklina could be called toxic from both parties (Aleksander + Alina)? Sorry if this offense anyone I only read the first book.
First of all- fuck offending people. Fiction is written to be discussed among other things and asking a question without ill intent should never be something to be afraid of.
As for the matter at hand- yes, absolutely.
There's plenty written on how did Aleksander wrong Alina and although most of it could be chalked up to caution, strategy and having to deal with mentally damaged girl necessary for his plans alongside more pressing matters like war and incompetent leadership. It's undeniable his feelings got involved, so he hardly remained simply cold and calculating.
He's also a petty bitch, who won't let an offense against himself and his goals slide, if he is in position to take revenge. (See: Genya's punishment, Nikolai's volcralization, partly burning that Saintsdamned orphanage..) Plus he knows words don't cost him anything, but often could work as well as actions (threatening to skin Alina, kill Grishenka etc.).
The main issue is that neither Alina, not plenty of readers see the difference between Alina as a person and her as a strategically important figure, later a leader and figurehead of part of his opposition. Or cannot grasp that a single action rarely has just one purpose with the Darkling.
For example burning that orphanage isn't necessary to prove how far he's willing to go- Alina already sees him as evil incarnate-, but it:
Destroys symbol of the past Alina keeps clinging to, even though it's holding her back.
Destroys one of few things she truly cared for.
Lures her out of hiding, so at least the Civil war can end.
Frees Alina from her shitty mother figure.
Settles the score of dead horrible women that kept damaging their "children" even from afar. And no, I won't cry for Anne Cunt any more than for Ol' Bags.
The other way around is often overlooked. Partly because Aleksander's viewed as a heartless monster by plenty of people, partly because he's the bad guy AND a ("white powerful") man, so he "cannot be abused", especially not by the heroine, from whose POV we see the story unfold.
Aleksander's only role model regarding long lasting relationships is his toxic mother, so he treats harm as affection, therefore we never see him complain, but let's be fair- if he were the one promising Alina to join her, only to proceed trying to kill them both through her powers, he'd be judged for it even more than he already is.
Alina from the first book never saw him as a human being. She found him attractive- yes-, but denied him something as basic as ability to have feelings. and once a salvation in a form of older female figure with puritan attitudes appears, Alina embraces her lies as a word of God, and immediately flees from him, never to stop and think about wider consequences of her sudden disappearance. Her dehumanization of him in the tent scene is quite something.
Alina from following books has fleeing moments of empathy, only to slide back into her "Evil man-needs to be destroyed" attitude. She feels ashamed of wanting him, she finds funny the notion he might've been sexually assaulted, she never considers his points or losses. There's probably more, but this already got longer than I intended, so I'll drop a link to my tag on their interactions I write as I go through the books.
While his unhealthy treatment of her is a combination of centuries of losses, damage caused by narcissistic mother and desperation of a cornered leader, hers of him is about bigotry, shame and will to be responsibility-free no matter the cost.
It's rather ironic, that he keeps trying to teach her- even though it's often the "tough love" he was taught at Baghra's knee-, while she uses "wisdom" of the same woman as ear plugs
Actually, the only truly nice action from her side I can think of is her honoring his last wish.
#reply#Grishaverse#The Darkling#Alina Strakov#Darklina#grishanalyticritical#self centred and paranoid#Grisha trilogy#Baghra Morozova#anti Baghra#Aleksander deserves help and appreciation#Alina some serious deprogramming and lessons in selflessness.

Valenfield Oneshots/AUs Collection , Chap 15 , Proposal
Masterlist
Pairing: Jill Valentine & Chris Redfield
Summary: Chris proposes to Jill
Status of their relationship in this one shot: Dating/Engaged
WC: 3.5k
Type: SFW
A/n: Hi! Hope you all enjoy. Please check out my masterlist, there's a lot of stuff there. You can get to know me, you can see the rules of my blog and then you can see all of my fanfictions. You'll be able to find the previous chapters to this fic and upcoming ones. You'll also be able to find my Wattpad & AO3. Comments, reblogs & likes are appreciated. Thank you
A lot has recently been on Chris's mind. Overall, his life and the choices he has made along the way. Everyday, he over contemplates what he's done. Whether or not it was worth it. Or whether or not he'd regret it in the future. Of course, there are some decisions he's decided to make that later on he'd wish he didn't commit. But he can't go back in time, therefore there's no reason to dwell on said commitments.
Although something he doesn't regret, is the path he's taken in life. The overall status of it. What career he chose, what style he chose, what appearance he's chose and best of all, the romantic life he has chosen. He's had his fair share of girlfriends, there's absolutely no denying that. But absolutely none of them have compared to his current, Jill.
That woman is his one & only. Day and night, what's on his mind? Her. It's always her. She manages to make him feel ways no one else ever has. She brings the best out in him. With her, he could go from being livid to gleeful. She's his safe space, his comfort zone, his home away from home. He loves everything about her. And one of quite a few choices he's made, one he doesn't regret is meeting her & falling for her.
In all honesty, without her, Chris doesn't know where he'd be currently. Would he be apart of the BSAA? Would he have met someone else? Would he be this happy? Those are the questions he finds himself asking often. Without her, he doesn't think he'd be happy nor content in his life. She brings joy into it that no one else ever does. She's the only woman he needs in his life. He wants her, only her, forever.
Chris, as of tonight, plans to propose to Jill. His palms have been sweating & his nerves have been shaky all damn night. He doesn't even understand why. His heart tells him she'll say yes but his brain is in attempts to convince him otherwise. He won't fumble though. He can't wait to see the perfect look on her face when he gets on that one knee. He sat up all night last week preparing a speech for it. He prays it is enough.
His arms were resting on the ledge of the balcony as he gazed off over the water. The moon was directly facing above it, causing it's shine to reflect off of the water, it was like a scene out of a movie. Chris & Jill went on a getaway together for the week. It all worked out, Jill has no suspicion since she's the one who planned the trip. They're currently in Barcelona, which Jill has wanted to visit since she was a young girl.
They even had enough money to book a nice hotel, they have a hot tub in it & everything! Although, Chris was the one morely excited about that...
"Handsome, you ready to go?" Jill asked from behind Chris, they split up for a few moments so she could use the bathroom. Chris pushed his arms off of the ledge and turned out, placing his arms behind him on the ledge. "Yeah baby." Chris replied, sighing deeply. Jill's face scrunched as if she was confused. She crossed her arms slowly as she took her time stepping over to him. She was wearing jean shorts and a cute white beachy style shirt, it wasn't her usual attire but it fit her.
"You doing okay?" Jill questioned him, placing her hands on his hips and staring up at him lovingly. "Of course, my love, I just think I'm getting dazed from that food." He snickered, placing his hands on her lower back, softly stroking it with his thumbs. "Trust me, me too honey, it was very good. Better than what we get back in the states." Jill laughed, smiling up at him. "Ready to go now?" "Yeah, let's go peach." Chris nodded, leaning down and kissing her forehead before moving away and grabbing onto her hand, the two interlocking their fingers together.
Chris asked to take her down to the beach, of course, she obliged. He told her the reason was is that he wanted to see if the water was warm enough for a swim, but duh, that is not true. He's dreamt of proposing to her at a beach of some sort. One is Barcelona seemed fitting. There's a sentimental aspect to it. The two would always go swimming together, even before they dated. Back in Raccoon City, there was a extensive beach just outside Arklay County, they'd often go together on heated summer days & just swim. They'd have the time of their lives.
And so even after they began dating, they still went to the beach quite commonly. Chris remembers a time he threw her in the water & she got all fussy. It was hilarious. Those were some good times. He thinks about them often. He & Jill just have something with going to lakes, oceans, reservoirs, etc.. together. Maybe that's their thing?
As they held hands, Jill & Chris walked down the pavemented cross walk, seeing all the sailboats & speedboats aligned at the dock. There were also small apartments nearby too, it would be quite the dream to live near a beach, at least for Jill. Although, she does enjoy living out in the countryside as her & Chris do currently. "I doubt the water is gonna be warm enough for a dip, you know that, right babe?" Jill chuckled, looking down as they walked. "Eh, possibly, guess we'll have to see baby." Chris hummed to her.
"Thank you for coming on this trip with me." Jill expressed. It's not that he didn't think he would. She thought he'd love to. But she also knows he loves to work and with going to Barcelona, he'd have to give that up for a weekend. "Oh sweetie, it was my pleasure. Anytime with you is a great time." Chris exclaimed, squeezing her hand lovingly. "It's just that... I just understand you love working, I know you do, I never wanna take that from you. I felt sort of guilty, y'know?" Jill stopped in her tracks, crossing her arms swiftly.
Chris gave her a somber expression. She really has no clue in the world, does she? It'll be perfect when he pops the question. "Baby." Chris whispered and he took a step towards her. He clasped his hands onto her cheeks, caressing them with ease, making her timidness fade away into oblivion. "You, you matter more to me than working does. Spending time with you is my favorite thing to do, Jill. Don't you ever think I'd choose work over you, okay?" "Mhm." Jill shook her head reassuringly, moving her hands up to hold onto his wrists.
"Good, smart girl." Chris gave her a gentle look before drawing himself closer to her, pressing his lips to hers. Jill breathed in deeply, relaxing in his touch. He knew just how to get her to calm down. Jill adored the fact Chris is always there for her. Jill never had someone she could rely on to be there for her ; then she met Chris, and oh boy did that change. He always knows what to say, what to do & how to act. He's her stress reliever.
Letting go of his wrists, Jill wrapped her arms around his neck, bringing him down even closer to her. Jill wanted him pressed against her, she wanted to feel all of him. "Chris..." Jill whispered between kisses. "I love you so much." "I love you too, my love." Chris responded, giving her such refined affection. Jill felt surges of love flowing through her. She is so in love with him. Jill was never a super affectionate person, but that's somewhat changing.
It was even darker now, the stars finally sparkling in the mid blue sky as the moon overlooked the large city. Everyone's lights were turned off in their home. It was as if it was just them. Them in their own little world. It was peaceful. Chris & Jill are in the more quieter side of the city but even so, they made the most of it. It was a special day so far but Jill didn't even know how much more great it was going to get. Oh the night she had awaiting for her was more than special.
Leisurely pulling away, Chris gazed into Jill's warm-hearted eyes, getting lost in them. She was so beautiful. "I will always love you." Chris whispered, moving his hand back to hers & holding it. "As will I." Jill smiled, walking alongside him once again. "Tomorrow, I'd like for us to do some shopping, maybe bring back home some gifts for people." "Fine by me, got anyone in mind?" "Well, Parker, Claire, Rebecca... If I'm feeling generous, Jessica." Jill rolled her eyes & giggled. Chris scoffed jokingly, nudging her. "Definitely stuff for the first three."
Light breezes began to pick up, they were clearly getting closer to the beach. Chris began to feel more anxious now. He was actually about to propose to the love of his life. The brittleness was becoming hard to handle but he's vowing to push through it. He needs to make her his wife and he her husband. It'll be the best thing ever if she does say yes. He just hopes that she does.
"We're getting closer... It's so pretty here at night!" Jill spoke, her tone radiant. "Just like you." Chris teased, patting her butt playfully, causing Jill to cutely roll her eyes. "You're not so bad yourself." She winked, allowing him to hold her hand again. "You're adorable." Chris chortled, watching people bike on past them. As stated, some parts of the city are more lively at night. "My feet are killing me though." Jill sighed, looking down at them. "Why didn't you say anything sooner?" Chris questioned. Before Jill could even get a word out, Chris snatched her off her feet, carrying her bridal style. Quite fitting.
"Baby!" Jill squealed out, hitting his shoulder playfully. She tossed her head back as she tittered, her smile was so bright. It was so real. Chris couldn't recall the last time she was like this. Their life is so riddled with horrific terrors that await them at every corner. It's hard to see the genuine sides of her or even himself. Even if he wasn't showing it off as much, he was happy. Really fucking happy.
"Your smile is so fucking refreshing to see." Chris let out, his entire soul & heart going into the sentence. Jill's face dropped. Not that she was upset or mad by what he said, it's just that she herself realized what she did too. Jill leaned in to him and kissed him a few times, just a couple pecks. "You're the reason I feel this way, I love you." "As do I beautiful." Chris smirked, kissing her cheek, still carrying her as if she weighed absolutely nothing.
Jill nestled her head into the crook of his neck as Chris continued to convoy to the beach. She was comfortable & safe in his arms. He'd do absolutely anything to protect her. She is his baby, his love, his woman, he'd die for her. Jill's never once felt unsafe around him and vice versa. "I'm tired." Jill yawned with a cackle. "Oh baby, I know, let's just walk along the beach for some time, okay sweetheart?" "Okay baby." Jill heaved out, resting in his arms.
The pavement led down to a wooden bridge that would the lead to the sandy beach. "Here we go." Chris mumbled out, walking along with bridge. "The sea breeze is so nice." "Agreed hun." Chris said happily. "Do you want me to put you down on the sand?" Chris asked her, getting closer & closer to the thick, soft sand. "Just hold me a bit longer, please sweetie?" "Always Jill." Chris tittered, squeezing her thigh with the hand that was wrapped around it.
As his feet hit the sand, the grains went between his toes. It felt good. "You sure you don't wanna be put down? Sand feels great." "You just don't wanna hold me." Jill spoke sternly, rolling her eyes. "I wanna hold you close to me all the time, so shush." Chris snickered, kissing her cheek, walking along the sand pathway.
The moment was so close. Chris was so excited yet so nervous. The moment he drops to that one knee, there is no going back. He's going to make sure his proposal is as meaningful as possible. All he wants is to see her face while he does it. She's going to look beautiful... Well, if she says yes, that is. Jill gazed at Chris as her head laid on his shoulder. She was just simply admiring him & his beauty. As he was ambling down, he caught on to the fact she was studying his face.
"What're you looking at?" Chris laughed, taking a look at her too. "You're a pretty man, like not just handsome but pretty." Jill explained. Chris had a puzzled look on his face before just nodding. He didn't really know what it meant but he appreciated the praise. "Thank you? Is that a good thing?" "Of course it is, Chris." Jill snickered.
Continuing to wander along the shoreline, light waves washed up on the shore. Slips of water reached up to his feet, it wasn't even that cold, rather warm. Then again, this entire time, the air has been warming up. "Water isn't all too bad." "It isn't? You still going to take a dip?" Jill questioned him. "Eh, I don't know. I do like how it is right now." "Okay honey... By the way, you can put me down now." Jill whispered, letting go of his shoulders and allowing her body to fall from his grasp.
"My feet don't hurt as bad anymore, thank you, love." Jill thanked him, kissing his cheek. She was a tad bit shorter than him, so she had to stand on her tippy toes. "Good." Chris cackled, trotting right beside her. As they walked, the water washed up on Jill's feet, causing her to shriek. "Oh, it does feel nice." Jill jogged into the water till it was just below her knees. Her jean shorts were a bit above her lower thighs.
Chris stared at Jill as she was having the time of her life. She was giggling so preciously as the water kept crashing at her. Her shorts & shirt were getting wet, not horribly, mostly speckles, but she didn't even mind, it was fun. Fun was rare for her, for them. Chris just stood there, his arms at his side. His throat went dry as he watched her. He shakily stepped closer to where she was, but not close enough to have the waves hit him. This was it.
She was turned around, stepping around in the water & gazing up at the moon. It was like she was in a trance. In his pocket, that's where the ring was. The ring had costed him a little over 2000$. It had sliver flowers engraved along the rim of it with multiple small diamonds mounted into it. It was definitely her style. And it was extremely expensive. He wasn't going to go cheap on her.
Clearing his throat, snagging the ring from his pocket, Chris kneeled down on one knee, checking the box to double check whether or not the ring was in it, luckily it was. He took a few small breaths, calming himself down & making sure he wasn't going to back out. Not because he didn't want to marry her but because his anxiety was killing him right now. But he's going to push right through it, as he should.
She still hadn't noticed yet as she was to giddy with the water. She wasn't acting like a child playing in the waves but rather a woman experiencing joy after so long. He hopes she'll feel even more joy after what he's about to do. "Baby..." Chris spoke out, his voice shaky. She didn't budge, she obviously didn't hear him. "Jill." Chris spoke out again, this time louder.
"What babe?" Jill asked as she turned around. As she did, she stopped, just standing there. She was completely stunned. Was this really happening? Was Chris really proposing? Her heart began to beat faster than ever, her body felt warm all of the sudden and her throat felt like it was going to burst. Chris was there, looking so handsome. The ring even glistened beneath the sky, the moment came together ever so perfectly.
"Jill..." Chris began, clearing his throat. His hands were still shaking. "The moment I saw you enter that office back in '96, I found you to be so beautiful. Not only was it your looks that drew me in, but your soul too. You're so pure. You're different from everybody else. You're one of a kind. Never did I see the day that I'd be asking this. Never once did I ever imagine that we'd even make it this far." He paused, gazing up at her with pure joy & contentment.
Her hands were over her mouth as he went on. "But Jill, I love you. I love you more than anything. I think about you day and night. You riddle my mind. I love you. I'm asking you, I ask you to be my wife. It would make me the happiest man on the planet..." Chris stopped, he wasn't fully done but here it was, her answer to the important ask.
Her nerves settled but not completely. She still felt like her throat was about to jump out of her mouth. She was so fucking happy. Of course, she had an idea that he'd propose sooner or later, but she most definitely didn't expect it now. She had him completely & utterly fooled. "Jesus... Oh my Gosh!" Jill shouted out, running her fingers through her hair, trying to calm herself down. "So? Will you? Will you make me the happiest man on Earth and be my wife, Jill?" Chris asked softly, his eyes watering. He wasn't emotional, rather stoic, but this just meant everything to him. "Yes, yes, I'll marry you." Jill nodded profusely, jumping into his arms with glee.
Chris's face eased as he heard her answer. All of that nervousness disappeared as if it were never there. He held her tightly, not ever wanting to let her go. This was a moment for the books. Jill ran her fingers through his hair as she kissed him repeatedly, all over his face before she then pressed her forehead against his. "I'd marry you a thousand times over again." Jill whispered, kissing his lips passionately.
"Mmm." Chris groaned out, kissing her back. This kiss felt more special than usual. It was full of real & unconditional happiness. Of course they are happy together, but this moment brought more delight to their lives than they've had in some time. "Here." Chris laughed out, taking her left hand and slipping her new, beautiful ring onto her finger, admiring the way it looked on her.
"It's gorgeous baby, thank you." Jill spoke with honesty, analyzing the ring with elation. "I'm glad you love it." Chris complied, stroking her shoulder swiftly. "I fucking love you." Chris uttered out, kissing her shoulder a couple times, then her cheek. "I love you so much." Jill mumbled back, placing her hands onto his fibrow chest as she smashed her lips with his, opening her mouth & allowing him to french her. Their tongues danced together in a prance.
Chris's hands roamed along her backside, pulling her waist into him, feeling her slim body against his. "You're now my fiancé." Chris chuckled, hugging her sweetly. "We need to start planning ASAP." Jill giggled, a adorable snort releasing from her as she did so. "How does Mrs. Redfield sound?" "Hmm... Jill Redfield... I like it, it's got a ring to it." Jill beamed up at him, booping his nose.
"What if you take my last name? Chris Valentine, ay?" Jill joked. "Mmm, no, you're taking mine gorgeous." Chris leered, kissing her again. "You don't even know how tense I've been tonight." Chris let out a relieved sigh. "Oh honey, I could tell, I just didn't know why... I'm glad it was just this... Did you think I'd say no?" Jill asked. "No, well yes, but no, but on the off chance-" Jill cut him off, "Never in an infinite amount of years would I have said no to being your forever wife." Jill said with tranquil. "Good baby." Chris whispered back.
"I can't wait to tell everyone once we're back in the states." "I know sweetheart, me neither." Chris soughed, rubbing her back. "Although, I am still tired, shall we head back to the hotel?" "Surely, my love." Chris agreed, taking her left hand in his, kissing it, before strolling off of the beach with her.
The amount of love the two of them felt for each other right now was indescribable. Little do they know, they'll go on to be married forever.
