Another Boruto plot that would’ve been better than aliens:
Because of all of the changes made to the shinobi system and the alliance between the Five Great Nations, shinobi don’t really play a militaristic role anymore. Instead, they go on out of village missions to deal with criminals that civilians cant easily deal with (rogue ninja, organized crime, serial killers, terrorists, etc.) to better relations and maintain village presence as a silent threat.
There’s a built in excuse for why the adults don’t simply solve all of the problems without nerfing them, the next gen doesn’t need to be weirdly skilled for their age/rank, the antagonists would be more gruesome/grounded than flashy, there could be more fleshed out characters from different villages, more focus would be on world building and how different countries are adapting to peacetime at different rates, more time and attention could be given to character conflict, there would be better reason for past generations to be concerned about the next gen lagging behind since they’d see them as doing nothing but handling “petty crime”, there would be more nuanced reasons for the next gen to have problems with their parents (because the disconnect between their experiences as children/shinobi is greater) than just “they’re a bad parent”, and more.
Yes I am saying that many of the Boruto series’ problems could be solved if they lowered the stakes rather than raising them.

"Day 7: Alternate ending"
My last piece for @narutorarepairweek
Alternate ending to these three's backstory as somehow they rise (again for Nagato) in Edo Tensei and witness Amegakure after their death and Naruto's broken promise.
[Image ID: A digital drawing of Yahiko, Konan and Nagato on a paper flowers bed, wearing their red cloud robes. Konan is sitting in between the other two, a hand on each of them, her eyes black and orange. Nagato and Yahiko are both still laying down, only their eyes open and mouth slightly open as they just woke up from slumber. Their eyes are dark like Konan. The three of them have light orange halos around their head. Behind their flower bed is the silhouette of an abandoned and destroyed Amegakure, with dark clouds and heavy rain. /.End ID]

how morally grey are hiruzen, hashirama, Tobirama and tsunade?
The Hokage and Moral Greyness
Oh boi. That's difficult to judge, honestly.
A morally grey character is one who is not purely good or evil. Their actions are not determined by their morals but by their ambitions. Said ambitions themselves can be either good or evil but both may be accomplished through good or bad means. What makes matters worse is that morality (and therefore moral greyness) is a spectrum.
Itachi is a very good example here because his goal (saving innocents and his little brother) is good. But the actions he takes to get there (mass murder of both the guilty and innocent, manipulation of his brother, and threats toward the village) are traditionally considered "evil" or "amoral".
It's all a big "ends justify the means".
<My opinion under the cut>
All of the characters mentioned above are morally grey to some degree. You cannot be a ninja, killing or willfully sacrificing people, without carrying at least a little bit of moral greyness to your decision-making.
But what we need to understand here is that sometimes, moral greyness is unavoidable. If the world demands you either pick up a weapon or watch your friends die, there is no such thing as a perfect solution to shield you from getting blood on your hands. Morals, sometimes, are a luxury.
And that is the issue with character morality. Are the characters in question really validating evil actions for the sake of evil or are they just being deprived of all viable alternatives? Or was it even a mistake perhaps? Or are they just evil in some aspects of their character but good in others?
Hashirama, for example, is morally grey because he decided he would kill both friend and foe if pressured to do so to save the greater good and establish lasting peace.
Tobirama is morally grey because he decided he would marginalize groups of people or make use of immoral methods even when peace is not under immediate threat.
Hiruzen is morally grey because he gave executive rights to morally corrupt individuals and then refused to punish them to instead maintain a malfunctioning system. In this instance, among other things, he condoned immoral methods to protect the greater good.
Tsunade is morally grey because she agrees to the use of children on the battlefield to save the greater good and re-establish peace.
In comparison, I'd say that Tsunade and Hashirama are the least morally grey as their worst decisions come from a place of necessity. Tobirama and Hiruzen are more morally grey because they commit, agree to, or tolerate immoral actions even when circumstances do not demand such apathy. But of course, it is more difficult to judge for us (the audience) as we do not have to deal with the trauma or pressure of those situations (or possibly even the full scope of events) that do very much influence those decisions.

I stumbled across your medic!Sasuke post by chance and it intrigued me. Given her most characteristic traits were basically everything Tsunade passed down to her, what do you think Sakura’s combative ability would be like if she studied under Orochimaru?
Hello anon, sorry this took me a second!
I'm not sure I would say everything about Sakura was passed down to her by Tsunade. In Pt 1, she still had her temper and her academic ability, and both became very important for her fighting style and medical ninjutsu, respectively, later on. Still:
I think one of the coolest parts about Orochimaru's fighting style is that, unlike Tsunade (or arguably Jiraiya as well, though he makes up for it with things like Sage Mode), his skillset is super diverse and isn't primarily limited to one field (Tsunade with medical ninjutsu). Whenever we see him fight, he uses a varied bunch of jutsu and techniques, and he doesn't seem to limit himself to one field or area.
Under Orochimaru, I definitely think she would have a very different skillset. Orochimaru's primary danger comes from knowledge, generally - he knows and is experienced with a lot of types of jutsus and is also very good at manipulating what he knows to create new things (his immortality and body switching). Unlike Tsunade, who's main fighting style seems to be 'hit them till they stop moving' (at least in Pt 1 she does have some other moves as well, such as using chakra to affect people's nerves so they can't move their limbs properly, like what did with Kabuto, but her to-go is generally her strength), Orochimaru seems more well versed in genjutsu, sealing, and kenjutsu than Tsunade is, which I could definitely see Sakura picking up on.
I still do think Sakura would pick up on at least some medical ninjutsu out of sheer necessity and also Kabuto in this AU, though I wouldn't see it being a big part of her skillset or combative ability.
Sakura doesn't have many fight scenes in Pt 1. Canon (manga only) her biggest one by herself is probably the fight against the Sound Genin in the Forest of Death. That and her fight with Ino, I guess.
In her fight against the Sound Genin, Sakura mainly relies on traps and trickery - she uses a single jutsu, the transformation jutsu, to get close to Zaku and injure him, and sets a lot of traps (though the Sound Genin avoid them). She also uses complex math on the fly in some of the anime movies to calculate the exact angle Sasuke has to throw a weapon. With this in mind, I definitely think a Sakura who learned under Orochimaru would be a more subtle fighter - I could see her using a lot more sealing and incorporating things she picks up from Orochimaru, like a water trap jutsu like the one Zabuza used on Kakashi, into those traps.
I could also see her getting really good at freaking people out, both with Genjutsu and just in general. It's one of the thing's Orochimaru is really good at and I'm surprised it's not mentioned more - a scared opponent is an irrational opponent, and it's a pity emotional manipulation as a weapon isn't brought up more. Sakura's already proven herself in canon to be willing to use the affection she knows people have for her to get them to do things; in canon, though, she does it to keep them safe. I could see a Sakura who trained with Orochimaru using emotional manipulation a lot more liberally; you'd get a lot of fight scenes where she pretended to appeal to Naruto and/or Sasuke with their bond as teammates to catch them off guard, I imagine.
I don't see her main abilities being in frontline fighting in this AU either, by the way - Orochimaru's main skills are in his experimentation and pushing the boundaries of chakra use and jutsu, just like Tsunade's are in her medical and administrative ability and Jiraiya's are in espionage. There's something very interesting about how the Sannin all gained their fame from frontline combat yet their main strengths exist outside of that, but because Naruto is a shounen anime we don't get to see those expanded on. It's disappointing - I see her mainly being a scientist and a creator. I think she would still be a force to be reckoned with, and definitely terrifying on the battlefield.
In canon, Sakura has created her own jutsu, and I think she would do that even more than she does in canon - using Orochimaru's gathered knowledge in Otogakure I could totally see her expanding on new or forbidden techniques or just making her own. Sakura's also kind of reckless as a fighter, more of an improvisor than a chess strategist, so I could totally see her incorporating a lot of experimental or developing techniques into her combat style.
Orochimaru's also skilled in kenjustu and I'd love to see Sakura pick that up instead of Sasuke in this AU. Instead of her brute fighting style, taijustu wise, in canon, I think she'd mainly rely on kenjustu and avoidance. She's quite fast in canon, and I think she could add to that with things such as genjutsu and displacement jutsus (or even the Second's techniques, depending on what you can justify Orochimaru somehow having access to).
I don't think she'd mainly use Genjutsu, though - Orochimaru's skill with it doesn't extend to specialization and following Tayuya's death I don't think there's anyone in Oto who specializes in Genjutsu who's that good. As I said, I think she would use a lot of traps, seals, and even some forbidden techniques - I don't think she'd spam justu like Orochimaru sometimes does, mainly due to chakra/stamina constraints, but still use a wide variety and create plans on the fly to keep her opponents confused, mimicking Orochimaru's unpredicability.
Also, this is an AU I could absolutely see Mokuton!Sakura happening in. I don't like it as much as some people do, but Sakura's canon chakra natures are water and earth, so I definitely see her using some water and earth techniques just to have them in her arsenal, and given what I mentioned about experimentation and experimental techniques as well I could see that turning into Mokuton.
Overall, I'd say she'd be a varied and unpredictable combatant with her main skills being sealing and traps, kenjutsu, and at least some elemental ninjutsu. Depending on if you think it could ever happen in canon Mokuton!Sakura is also a possibility. This Sakura would also add in a heavy dose of experimental techniques and forbidden jutsu, as well as emotional manipulation and be very good at freaking people out as she fights. While I could never see her being a chess strategist a la Shikamaru, I think her fights would have a similar improvised strategy and resourcefulness as we see from her in Pt 1 and early Pt 2, but I still don't see her being a very cautious fighter.

I personally liked the jjk ending and IMO think a lot of the dislike is misinterpretation, nitpciking, and the leaks. I think a lot of Gojo stans are just mad they wasted time theorizing he’d come back and taking it out on the ending. If you didn’t like the ending how would you have written it.
Disliking something doesn’t mean failing to see the intent behind it.
As much as it sucked when Choso died, I still recognized the moment for what it was. One of characters who embodied the meaning of being human (love and redemption) dying to the King of Curses and in that instance all the other characters started to lose their humanity just to win (Yuji going crazy on Sukuna in visceral anger (while not even bothering to call out for Megumi), Yuta putting himself in Gojo’s body, etc.).
I’m not even a Gojo stan but while I did agree with some of the evidence that he could come back I didn’t particularly want him to. More importantly there was no way in hell Gege would bring him back. I’m glad he didn’t come back but the way everything was handled afterwards is what I didn’t like.
To go a step forward, I enjoyed the death. Gojo's status as the strongest and being seen as a weapon to be exploited is one of the most consistent themes within the series. (Honestly the most consistent). The balance of the world literally shifted upon his birth and we get several examples of how this impacted many people (I.E. Toji, the curse users during the HI arc, etc.) His death was to be just as impactful and if he had to face defeat to anyone, it would have had to have been Sukuna.
And 100% agree on the leaks. LEAKS SUCK. I hope no other series allows leaks to pervade their fandom like jjk did. Same thing happened with BNHA, a mistranslated line went wild through the fanbase and ruined a lot of peoples perception. I am glad that the Undead Unluck leaker recognized peak and stopped so they could read weekly when it dropped and that the Kagurabachi leaker got ran out of the fandom and I hope the trend continues.
Now the question.
To be honest I’m not particularly sure how I would have wanted the series to end.
Sorry if you were looking for a straight answer under the "Keep reading" tab.
Not to cop out but I really enjoyed the dream theory by thatpersonperson, however realistically Akutami would have needed a chapter or two to fully accomplish something like that. With the limited time, I don’t think he’d be able to wrap everything up unless it was a longer chapter than normal.
But besides that…I really don’t know.
Walk with me.
I mentioned that my enjoyment for the series waned towards the latter half but, aside from Yuji, Choso, and Maki, one of the main reasons I stayed was because I’ve always been intrigued with the story Akutami was trying to tell.
Is jjk about the perpetuation of generational trauma? About how soldiers (sorcerers) lose empathy because of the horrors they face? Is it about a cyclical tragedy? Is it about the inescapable nature of fate?
Ending the story on a bittersweet finale is for the best given its subject matter.
So how does this story conclude in a hopeful way? A meaningful one that makes sense given all the loss over the course of the series.
(And hopeful is not synonymous with happy. There was never a point in time where I thought JJK would get an outright happy ending. The Chainsaw Man Part 1 ending might be one of my favorite endings period. But it wasn’t particularly happy, it was hopeful.)
The point I’m trying to make is that taking into account what jjk is and how Gege wrote it, I don’t have a set way I wanted it to end besides that fact that I wanted Gege to give me a reason for the strife and see a few things before it did end.
Like yes, jjk was never going to erase cursed energy or even really do anything to stop children/teens from being drafted into jjk society to fight curses at a young age (Naruto didn’t do it either). But I think it’s still valid to dislike keeping the child soldiers especially when in a very pivotal moment Megumi literally mentioned wanting a peaceful life.
JJK had a chapter literally titled ‘Premature Death’ (Chapter 76) which condemns the exploitation of youth as disposable pawns within jujutsu society and sets forth very important events….yet the series ends with the characters still trapped within that cycle of exploitation. People have been arguing that with the higher ups killed and the Zenin Clan gone, the old age has caved to the new but I would have loved the adults left behind to actually address how jujutsu society would move forward with the void the higher ups left behind. The characters seem to still operate on the ways of the old system. And I understand how changes were shown by not executing the curse users but I guess I wanted more.
The only form of reflection the characters had on the traumatic events of the Sukuna fight was strategy based. And this is what I meant previously by Gege has a very clinical writing style at times. The lack of introspection or rumination after catastrophic and almost world ending events weakens what could have been sincere. There was no proper weight given to everything that just happened. Like Yuji who watched Choso turn to ashes in front of him and Megumi who’s body killed both his Tsumiki and Gojo out of his control while also dealing with the damage from previous attacks. Also from Yuta.
Yuta STILL HAS STITCHES ON HIS HEAD. There was an elephant in the room, a physical reminder and constant weight that was never addressed by him especially. Seeing how it affected him and retroactively affected his relationship with Gojo would have been amazing to see. I think that, although a nice decision in the moment, the follow through of the decision to put Yuta in Gojo's body was incredibly weak.
Also, Megumi only getting a chapter dedicated to his closure with Sukuna, who'd taken his body and killed both his sister, Gojo, and many others...I wanted more.
If you wanted a straight answer on how I would write it, it would have involved time that sadly I know Akutami didn't have and more moments to sit with the characters post-battle. I'm not of the belief that just because I didn't like a thing, I'm automatically better qualified to dictate a straight ending. I just have things I would have liked for said ending. I would have liked more follow through, especially regarding jujutsu society. How are they going to rebuild the system that prevents that exploitation as well as the events that led to the series? Also, I would have liked more discussion on ending the cycle of curses that Geto and Yuki brought up. I knew it wasn't going to be achieved, especially after Yuki died as well as any sign of the merger, but I wanted something it was an interesting in-universe dilemma.
I am glad that you, and many other people, enjoyed it. I don’t think it’s all bad or even terrible I just wasn’t left satisfied. And that's fine, it would've been impossible for such a series to satisfy EVERYONE. Someone else asked me if there was anything I liked and I will say, I did enjoy the final scene with Sukuna.
I like the idea that Yuji did change Sukuna. That ideology Sukuna has in believing in strength crumbles at his defeat by Yuji. In a way Yuji proved himself and his ideology correct in Sukuna’s eyes and so in death Sukuna gives Yuji’s viewpoint a chance. I think its a good ending for Sukuna, who decides to choose walk a path with Uraume. The acknowledgement that he lost was also great, I didn't see that coming.
I will say that the response to the ending is overly volatile. There’s a lot of anger being thrown around on both sides. A lot of people who enjoyed the ending are throwing around “media literacy” and a lot of people who didn’t like the ending are calling those who did “Gege glazers”. I think both sides are overreacting but this is what happens whenever an immensely popular, long-running series ends. **Cough Cough** Naruto and Bleach.
It was to be expected no matter how it ended.
I haven’t seen it as much here (Twitter is hell right now) but I do think people need to calm down. I don’t expect any of what I didn’t like or what I wanted to affect someone else's opinion of it so there isn't a point in screaming at anyone over it.
Anyway I really do hope that whatever Gege writes next, he gets to do it at his own pace without the meddling and deadlines of WSJ and hopefully he gets a monthly series. (And a break)

Part 1/Original Naruto and Part 2/Shippuden Naruto are completely different characters that it’s not even funny.
OG Naruto show a lot of sympathy towards those who aren’t parallel with him. Haku and Neji are the biggest examples. One was treated as a weapon who can’t think for himself and lost his mother to his father, and the other became a slave at a young age in broad daylight and then loses his own father due to his duty. Hell, he even cried for Haku!
Shippuden Naruto on the other hand, has a WEAK compassion. His “compassion” is rather self serving. It’s not much about helping people, it’s more of confirming his own ego as a “hero” and “good person”. He usually compares his own life to the villains, in a way to gaslight them.
Had OG Naruto’s character continued to grow, he would most likely to help Konoha less and help those who really need his help. Naruto and his friends would eventually find out all about the dark history of Konoha, gather their friends and family, and get them to leave. All those who can fight will rebel against Konoha, joining other ninjas and people who suffered under the hands of the Great Nation villages.

drowning - naruto x oc part 13
( i do not own any naruto characters, only the original characters)
“oh kami, i think im gonna be sick,” akimitsu said from behind me, the panic evident in his usually placid voice. i turned my head to catch a glimpse of him slightly hunched over, his hand now tightly clasping his mouth. shisori sat smugly beside him, rubbing his back soothingly while an expression of concern ran across her paled face.
“deep breaths,” she said with a soft voice, prompting me to roll my eyes and momentarily stop my rowing.
“we’re gonna reach the island in just a couple of hours. worst comes to worst, you vomit into the ocean. now pull yourself together, ōkī otoko,” i said plainly, turning my head back in front of me and picking up my rowing. my arms were sore and stiff, exhausted of this repetitive movement i had increasingly picked up the pace of over the past few hours, and my hands were starting to sprout blisters as the oar handles continued to rub then raw.
“i would like to, but it’s not that easy, lady kyō,” he said with a grunt before vomiting over the side of the boat with an explicit sound.
“you could have a little compassion you know,” shisori muttered under her breath, continuing to rub his back.
“we’re almost to our destination and you want me to have compassion? please stop humoring me, shisori,” i said plainly before hearing her groan in frustration.
“you always do this,” she said whilst crossing her arms. “kami forbid we aren’t perfect, unlike you.” she sneered.
“i’m not asking for perfection. please do not forget i only have one thing in mind, and that is this mission’s success. this is not the time for a teen romance,” i said sharply before slowing down my movements from exhaustion.
“you wouldn’t know anything about it, so stop speaking on things you know nothing of,” she replied just as sharp, as her voice grew in agitation. i closed my eyes and took a deep breath before turning my head slightly so i could see her from the corner of my eye.
“you are right, i know nothing of it. but this whole time while you two have been coveting? i’ve been doing all the work. i would like to trust tsunade sama’s judgment, but i can’t help but feel as if she has made a mistake making you come along,” i said passively before turning back around and picking up my rowing, ignoring the burning radiating from my hands.
“you know, i’m also having doubts about her judgement. because clearly she was lacking the words to explain that you are an entitled bitch,” she said with haste and venom, as if she had been itching to say it for some time.
“now shisori, i don’t think-“ akimitsu started to interject before he was interrupted by his own hiccup, to which he had to clasp his hand back over his mouth.
“if that is what it takes for you to grow up and simply do your job, then so be it. i have only asked of you to stop being a child and focus on your mission, and if that is too hard for you, then you have no business being a kunoichi,” i said as i furrowed my brows and gazed ahead of us. the crystalline sea reflected the sky above as a perfect picture was presented, the powdered and wispy clouds gracing us with their presence as if they were ancient gods directing us. the vastness of the sea would have been overwhelming if i hadn’t been so determined to simply reach our destination. as if right on que, i heard akimitsu vomit again behind me as i heard shisori’s now shrill voice try to comfort him.
the rest of the trip was held in a cramped silence, the two not interjecting once the rest of the way. i kept to myself and didn’t bother looking at either of them, continuing my rowing and only taking a break when i couldn’t go any further. eventually, after a dreadful few hours, we reached the island that had taken us a merely a week to come by. beyond a bank of powdered sand, there was a plethora of compacted, lush green trees that encased the rest of the island within its beauty. the clouds above had almost completely dissipated, leaving the abundant sunshine to be casted directly onto the flourishing land that was slowly coming into full view.
my heart was beating more than i would like to admit, as i felt my tiresome fingers twitch with excitement. i slowed my rowing and exhaled deeply upon acknowledging the divine sight, a sense of longing familiarity noticeably approaching me. it almost felt as if my breath had betrayed me and escaped from my lungs the longer i stared at the heavenly scene, completely mesmerized by the sight. ‘i wish sen were here to see this,’ i thought to myself as my eyes welled up with lone tears, and i felt a strong sense of pride course through me. pride in the irrevocable fact that this sacred land withholds my origins and clan secrets, both of which were arduously necessary for sen’s salvation. i inhaled a shaky breath before a foreign smile graced my lips, and i felt as if some of the weight on my chest had dissipated. i blinked away my tears before noticeably picking up the pace of my rowing.
“thank kami, about-,” akimitsu started saying before being interrupted by his own hiccup. “excuse me, about time.”
“what are we doing here again?” shisori asked with an edge present in her voice.
“you will see,” i replied nonchalantly, my lips slightly curling up upon hearing her groan in response.
the two continued to talk excitedly behind me while we rapidly closed in on the island, and i could barely contain myself. once we were close enough, i hopped out of the boat and nearly gasped as i felt the crystal cool water come up to my thighs, instantaneously soothing my tiresome limbs. i exhaled whilst looking down and watched in delight as the ripples in the water reacted to my touch, the clear liquid mesmerizing me. i told shisori to come out and she did so, but not without agitation of course. once she was in the water, we both grabbed each side of the boat and brought it onto the shore, leaving a slightly bashful akimitsu in its wake. i stepped on various sea shells along the way, each one digging into my foot, imprinting its existence onto me almost as a reminder. as i got out of the water, i slowly spun around as i took in the most ethereal view.
“i can see why this is in the middle of nowhere, it’s beautiful,” i heard akimitsu state, rising out of the boat wearily and balancing onto shisori’s arm, which she had kindly lended to him. after his feet had touched the powdered sand, he soon collapsed on his back. shisori had yelped in surprise, but he waved it off whilst stating that he felt much relieved.
“hai, untouched by any outside for centuries, or so they say,” i said before i dug my feet into the sand, searching the trees for any sign of an entrance, to which no avail. it seemed as if the forest was so dense and compacted on the other side, it would be nearly impossible to penetrate. nearly impossible, they say. i took a deep breath before i briskly moved closer to the wall and lied my sore hands flat against the natural structure. after a few moments of inspection, i slowly weaved my hands together and casted a few delicate hand signs, to which various roots and branches started to intertwine with one another. the sheer amount of how many trees there were was overwhelming, but as i closed my eyes, furrowed my eyebrows, and widened my stance, i focused on my breathing as i visualized what i was doing. under the canopy, through the trees, watching as they intertwine and weave. i could feel the vines and various limbs as if they were veins of my very own, each with a different purpose and each following the order i was rearranging them into.
whilst my eyes were closed and as i felt the trees moving with me, a certain visual had found its way beneath my eyelids. i saw a trail of fleeting gold, weaving its way through the bunch and going towards what seemed like the center. curious, i pushed myself a little further and followed this ephemeral trail. the parting of the trees quickened in pace the closer it got to following the gold, and right when the two were nearing a collision, the gold vanished. confused, i stopped my jutsu as i was certain there was something beyond where it led me. i opened my eyes to a view of compacted trees parted down the middle, and the trail that followed almost looked longer than the entirety of our trip.
“that was…,” shisori started to say, and i turned around to catch a glance of her taken aback expression before she spotted me and furrowed her eyebrows.
“that was amazing, lady kyō,” akimitsu intervened, propping himself up and making his way towards us. “i feel so much better! and to make it even more so, we are on a beautiful island! thank kami,” he exclaimed with wide eyes, taking in his surroundings with wonder.
“yeah yeah,” shisori said with a cross of her arms. “i guess it is pretty nice here, but then again, there’s a whole forest to which we know nothing of,” she finished.
“hmm, if only there was something we could do about that…oh wait,” i said teasingly and turned toward akimitsu. he replied with an “on it,” before he activated his byakugan and searched the surrounding woods. he took a minute to do so thoroughly before coming to the conclusion that it was just us on the island, and the native animals of course.
“okay, well that settles it. let’s scope the forest before we decide on where to set up camp,” i said before walking over and grabbing my bag out of the boat. my katana hung intimately on my hip, its being molded perfectly with mine. it was a gift from sen when i had gotten enrolled in the anbu a few years ago by lord hiruzen’s counsel, the blade still as sharp as ever. it was our mothers chosen weapon, a true embodiment of one fierce kunoichi, and was found in the wreckage of the nine tails attack. despite the carnage, sen thought it best to pass on the heirloom in tradition of wielding mighty swords within the clan, hence why she did it so early.
“kyō, do you know what this is?” sen had asked me one day after i returned from training. she had unsheathed the katana and it rested in both of her hands as she presented it to me, the light catching off of the blade. i cocked my head as my eyes went wide with the sudden realization.
“i-is that-?” i started to ask, but my words faltered upon seeing her close her eyes and gently nod. my jaw went slack and i was in a state of shock before reality dawned on me. i lowered myself down to my knees before i gingerly bowed before her.
“there is no need for such formalities, kyō,” she had said lightheartedly, motioning for me to stand again. i shook my head at her before rising to sit comfortably on my knees.
“sen, you do not know how much this means to me,” i started to say before she smiled down wistfully towards me.
“mother never got to formally pass hers down to me, and i believe you deserve it,” she said with a soft smile, the candles that surrounded us highlighting her beaming features in their soft glow.
“i believe you’re going to be the strongest of the clan, i can just feel it. so practice well and tread lightly as i’m sure one day, it will come in handy,” she had barely said before i attacked her with a hug. that night and the following few days, i had trained so intensely, my hands were blistered and raw, but they molded perfectly with the blade handle.
“i believe if we follow this trail, we will find what we came here for. i would suggest we go separate ways, but it seems as if my jutsu wielding is the only thing that will allow us to pass. keep in mind, i have no idea what this forest contains. so please, tread lightly, and be cautious in refraining from harming the life that is already present here,” i said before nodding toward both of them. they nodded back before the three of us retrieved the boat and brought it closer to the forest, to which we set it down and would leave it for later. after getting it settled, we made our way into the enigmatic forest.
upon first crossing the threshold, it felt as if the forest itself was holding its breath. it was an eerily quiet scene, with no birds or animals in sight, a stark contrast from the abundance of tranquil sounds heard from the outside. the only thing that could be heard was the mismatched footprints that were emitted from the three of us. akimitsu led the way, followed by shisori, as i took the rear. it felt as if the hair on my neck was raised, followed by a foreign tingling sensation, as if someone were standing right behind me.
“this is beautiful and all, but does anyone else get the feeling we’re being watched?” shisori asked with hesitance from in front of of me. right at that moment, we heard a loud sound coming from the right of us, to which she jumped at. i drew my katana as akimitsu instantaneously activated his byakugan, and only when he confirmed it was an animal, i saw shisori visibly relax.
“hai, i feel it too. stay on guard, and keep an eye out,” i said before the three of us proceeded with a more cautious stance.
despite the eerie atmosphere that accommodated the forest, it truly was a most beautiful sight. life sprung from every corner that was visible to the eye, and never in my life had i been surrounded by so much of it. i felt a small smile pull at my lips at the thought of how much raw potential this oasis held, and how powerful my ancestors must have been with it available right at their fingertips.
we walked for what seemed like a few hours, with shisori infamously complaining the majority of the time. the bright leaves and branches of various plants provided us with the upmost shade, for which i was eternally grateful for. clustered roots were omnipresent in correlation with our feet, which tangled about and tripped all three of us more times than we would like to admit. when i inhaled, it was as if i was breathing air that hadn’t been touched by the world outside. it hung so pure, so raw, and so full of life, i could feel it intertwining with the oxygen within me and becoming whole with me.
after awhile, we came to what looked to be a densely compacted wall of vines and trees, similar to the one that barricaded the perimeter of the forest. it seemed as if either way i looked, there was nothing i could see beyond or past this wall. i pushed past the two before me and gently put my palms against it as closed my eyes and was reminded of where i had envisioned the gold trail to end, which was right in front of us. i took a deep breath before i weaved a sign that should have separated the vines into two, leaving us with room to enter. but after i had casted my hand signs and focused my chakra on the task before me, i was taken aback at the sight of nothing changing.
“uhh what just happened?” shisori asked akimitsu in a hushed whisper, unaware of the fact that i could hear her perfectly. he put his hand up to her as to wane her towards patience before i tried again.
this time i tightly clasped my hands together as i widened my stance and furrowed my brow, my feet digging into the lush earth beneath me. i breathed deeply through my nose before i exhaled and casted my signs. this time i had extended more chakra to excrete and reverberate around me in hopes of my chakra getting through the thick barrier. alas, when i noticed nothing at all was changing other than the deterioration of my chakra levels, i let my hands go and sighed in frustration.
“akimitsu, don’t be shy,” i said almost sarcastically, prompting him to use his byakugan and search the blockade that stood in our way.
“kami, what is this…” he said to himself as his eyes widened upon the sight. i turned myself toward him and patiently awaited his conclusion.
“apologies, lady kyō, but it seems as if i cannot sense anything past this wall. it is made up of a highly dense and impenetrable chakra, and it is constantly being surged through the barrier to replenish itself as if it is cleansing its own wounds. it is truly strange,” he said with a hint of admiration.
“chakra?” i said with apprehension present in my voice. “can you see where it is coming from?” i asked, my voice strained. he replied with a “hai” before checking again.
“i cannot see where it is coming from, it is as if the chakra is in one big cycle, encasing this area within it. it flows like the ocean, simultaneously pushing and pulling. i cannot find a weak point or sense the origin,” he said.
“i don’t understand, why is there a chakra barrier in here and not protecting the island?” shisori asked from behind us.
“it is hard to say, but if i had to take a guess, i would owe it to the possibility of misdirection. if the entire island were covered in this barrier, then it would be an easy target,” akimitsu answered while deactivating his byakugan.
“hai. we may not know until we enter, which certainly seems to be a plausible obstacle. until then, you two rest up and make camp,” i said, watching the two deflate from fatigue as a look of relief came over them.
“you two can find a spot and set everything up, akimitsu make sure you conduct periodic perimeter checks. shisori,” i said while turning to both of them. “stay out of trouble, baka,” i said with the slightest of smiles. she jokingly rolled her eyes at me before the two turned to find shelter.
meanwhile, i turned back around and examined the thick barrier in front of me. i decided to try my jutsu one more time before i would initiate another strategy. clasping my hands together, i took deep breaths before weaving my hand signs and directing all my chakra towards parting the barrier. it proved to be all in vain as it refused to budge, my breathing ragged as i hunched over my knees. kami, if my jutsu won’t work, then what will? i thought it over a minute and regained my breath before i decided to lie my hands palm flat l against the wall as i closed my eyes and slowed my breathing. focusing on the nature around me, i could hear the weaving and intertwining of the vines that made up the barrier, and for a second it sounded as if it reacted to my touch. i squeezed my eyes as i breathed deeply and pushed my hands a bit further, to which the vines under my hands abruptly vanished and i fell through.
once i registered what happened, i swiftly pushed myself off of the plush ground and jumped to my feet. ‘i fell through?’ i thought to myself as i slowly looked at the scenery that encased me. stepping stones adorned the trail in front of me as far as i could see, and the same thick walls followed the trail as beautiful arches of multiple varieties of bright flowers lined them. stone bird baths sporadically decorated the sides of the trail as all sorts of native shrubbery complimented the well kept design. i steadied my balance as i took my first step toward the trail, which initiated the soft glow of a nearby lantern that hung from an arch. the sight brought a comfortable smile to my face as i observed it all in wonder, taken aback by the untamed beauty i never would have thought i would see. i took a deep breath as i prepared myself for what lies beyond before i took another step.

Thinking about all the possibilities that could've happened if Naruto had left the village with Sasuke.
Hear me out, what Naruto went through is FOUL. The villagers treated him like pure shit. He was abused, he was shunned, harassed, need I go on?
Imagine if he just. Let go. Left. Realized that staying in the village would do him no good and ran away with Sasuke.
This can be treated romantically or not. Imagine both of them finding peace outside of the village together, keeping in touch with Sakura and Kakashi maybe, but evidently staying away, staying rouge ninja's together.
GOD, THE POSSIBILITIES, ALL THE BEAUTIFUL POSSIBILITIES!!

Alternative Canon Ships
I think something that annoys me and a lot of other people about the canon ships is that they weren’t the only options by a country mile. So I wanted to finally put my money where my mouth is and take a crack at pairing the Konoha 12 without changing the manga.
Anyone I didn’t mention here should be presumed single in my AU because I either think they’re better single or I don’t care about who they end up with.
Option 1
Naruto and Sasuke - The entire series is about them learning to understand each other and ending the cycle of hatred by coming together (in holy matrimony). Naruto wouldn’t have a character arc without Sasuke and Sasuke’s character arc is incomplete without Naruto. I don’t think I need to explain how they act as foils and compliments for each other or how they’re willing to go to great lengths for each other or how they show time and time again how much they value each other.
Sakura and Rock Lee - We really went through the chunin exams for nothing. They have very little screen time together, but what we have is good enough for it to at least make sense. Rock Lee is clearly willing to both wait and die for her and Sakura has a mini arc about learning not to judge people on appearances and to respect him that culminates in her giving him flowers in the hospital. Worst case scenario it needs to get the NaruHina treatment and have a movie made about why they came together in the end.
Shikamaru and Choji - I’ve already said that I don’t care for any of the inter-Ino-Shika-Cho ships, but they interact with too few characters for me not to bring them up here. They’re childhood friends, they obviously care for and respect each other, they have complimentary personalities, and Shikamaru stands up for Choji on multiple occasions. They don’t get too much attention in shippuden because Choji and Ino were shafted, but they at least continue to support each other when they are shown interacting.
(This is where we start losing a sturdy foundation because the characters don’t have enough screen time spent interacting with anyone unmentioned. From here on out the bar is in hell and I’m only pairing the characters off because it would’ve been expected.)
Ino and Sai - A lot of people shit on this ship and I get why (Ino is caught in Sakura’s shadow and Sai was literally Sasuke’s replacement in team 7, so it’s easy to see them as discount SasuSaku). However, the ship isn’t the most unbelievable in canon. Ino has shown that she has genuine feelings for Sai and they at least interact with each other.
Hinata and Shino - Hinata would make sense with either of her teammates, but I’m choosing Shino because he makes more sense. They’re similarly introverted types, they get along, Shino has been shown to have faith in her abilities (I’m not saying Kiba doesn’t, but Shino’s more consistent about it), and I think it would be fitting for Shino (who’s insecure about being unnoticeable) to end up with someone who would prioritize him if he ends up with anyone at all.
Option 2
Naruto and Sakura - These two would’ve made more sense, “red herring” and “pursued her for rivalry” my ass. Both are ready and willing to make sacrifices for each other, they interact a lot and most of it is positive (we aren’t mentioning the slapstick because I’m not having that asinine argument), there were hints throughout shippuden of Sakura returning his feelings, they have complimentary personalities, Sakura ending up with Naruto is beneficial to her character, Naruto ending up with Sakura is in-line with his character arc and theme, both stop to consider each other’s feelings on multiple occasions, Sakura attempts to help Naruto in any way she can on a regular basis, (even if I hate how often this is mentioned) Sakura is explicitly compared to Kushina, there are more hints at their relationship than I care to list here, and there’s symbolism for a flower under the sun/heaven and earth.
Sasuke and Karin - SasuKarin is the sister ship to Naruto and Sakura because of its parallels (the Uzumaki has feelings first, the girls are both compared to Kushina, the girls both act as support and medics to the boys who take on leadership roles, the Uzumaki wants to protect/see their love interest’s smile, etc). As for reasons: Sasuke has been shown to respect Karin and her abilities, Karin loves Sasuke because he was the first person to show her kindness, Karin has put her life on the line for Sasuke on multiple occasions, both are willing to go to great length for the other, and both unlocked abilities for the sake of saving the other.
Ino and Sai - I’ve already explained this.
Shikamaru and Temari - This ship isn’t perfect, but I think it makes enough sense for most people to not be upset (the only people I’ve seen complaining about it are people who hate Shikamaru or ship something else). They always share at least one scene when Temari enters the story, there are hints about it being romantic, and makes more sense in canon than many of the other options.
Choji and Hinata - This is, admittedly, a stretch, but it isn’t as much as a stretch as ChoKaru so I’m considering this still in the safe zone. The two both have shy and sweet personalities that make it easy to imagine them getting along, both struggle with overcoming their low self-esteem and taking action themselves, both care deeply for their friends, Hinata fits with what Choji wanted romantically in his infinite tsukuyomi dream, and both have the shared idea of maintaining kindness even in a ruthless shinobi world.
Bonus
Naruto and Hinata - This ship was fine, even with its lack of screen time, but the Last and Boruto ruined it, so we’ll just pretend that didn’t happen. Naruto learned to not judge and respect Hinata, Hinata has multiple scenes where she snaps Naruto out of spiraling (the proud failure speech is still peak NaruHina), Naruto stands up for Hinata, Hinata takes a lot of inspiration from Naruto and his determination, and Hinata cares about Naruto’s wellbeing and feelings so much it’s a near irrevocable part of her character. With nothing changed it would still be just as flawed and clumsy as in canon, but it wouldn’t be unforgivable.
Hinata and Rock Lee - Again, I’m stretching canon for a Hinata ship, but I think there’s enough ground to stand on to at least mention it. That ground being a weird amount of parallels. They both have experience being in Neji’s shadow, both of them are untalented and make up for their shortcomings through hard work, both care about the people they love to a self-sacrificial degree, both are true to their word, both of them admire Naruto (join the club), both of them has a teacher that acts as a parental figure, and both of them have unrequited love because the target of their affection has feelings for someone more conventionally attractive than them(though Hinata gets more conventionally attractive as the series goes on so…).
Ino and Choji - It’s not perfect, but it gets the job done. They support each other as teammates, Ino could help Choji be more confident, Ino getting with Choji could symbolize her getting past her superficiality, and they don’t have opposing personalities or beliefs as far as I can tell.
Sasuke and No One - I’m just putting this here to remind everyone that there’s an argument to be made about Sasuke being better off without a relationship. I absolutely get why he was paired off and I probably would too if I was in charge of the epilogue (it can be an indicator of him and the clan healing, plus an Uchiha child/the sharingan is a fun idea to mess around with), but him remaining single also makes sense. He states how he’s disinterested in romance and he just doesn’t have that many working potential love interests in canon. Yes, there’s Sakura but more than a movie could cover would have to change before the two of them could reasonably work together and it might still ruin her character.

Ashura watches nii-san reach up, beckoning, and Kousei-chan leaps out of the tree into his arms. The little boy giggles madly as he's swung around in a wide circle, and nii-san's laughter joins his.
It's a lovely sight, one that Ashura doesn't want to disturb, but the shifting of the baby cradled against his chest is a warning of things to come.

Note
i very much enjoy the extremely scientific analysis of the naruto verse in which there are three genders, aka naruto, sasuke, and Woman.
AM I WRONG? AM I WRONG? pulls down projection screen and plays powerpoint
Obviously let's give room for nuance. A ton of Naruto characters don't fall into these gender norms. This does predominantly apply to the rampant proliferation of the three-person dynamics that were assigned by the government and dictate your entire life. And, like, society. It does not end. Gender isn't a biological factor in Naruto, it's a social dynamic constructed entirely by your homoerotic tension with other men. And there are so many.
Madara (S), Hashirama (N), Mito (W). Izuna (N) and Tobirama (S) - tragically, Izuna died before women could be invented. Sarutobi (N), Danzo (S, horrifically) - see above about women not being invented yet. Jiraiya (N), Orochimaru (S), Tsunade (W). Yahiko (N), Nagato (S), Konan (W). Obito (N), Kakashi (S), Rin (W). Shisui (N), Itachi (S), that little deeply unimportant girlfriend (W). Um, fucking, Naruto (N), Sasuke (S), Sakura (W). Even - even, fuckin, Rock Lee (N), Neiji (S), Tenten (W).
And what do they all have in common????
(OT3. They're all OT3s. Is what I'm saying).
There is some room for alternative gender expressions here, like being butch or femme. Naruto gender expressions: teacher, otouto, woman who you can't even tell is woman gendered because she has no backstory but you just have to kinda assume that she has a polycule-based backstory where she was Woman Gender. I feel almost as if 2/3rds of the Rookie 9 are liberated from this. InoShikaCho just doesn't fit (their chaotic cousin energy is just too strong and Ino's too much of a lesbian). Hinata's too busy being defined entirely by a different throuple's N to have codependent dynamics with her own N and S (and I'm hesitant to even say that, since I actually don't know if Kiba and Shino have a codependent rivalry - do they?).
I get, like, the reason for all of this. Curse of Hatred. Cycles. N and S Genders being sourced from demigods or something. Narrative parallelism. Sympathy points. It's not the bad guy's fault he's evil, his N and W gendered counterparts died :(. But an extremely strange side-effect of this is that all of the male characters are, like, Just Naruto or Just Sasuke. But the vast majority of the female characters are - like, completely defined by the men in their lives - but also they are more likely to be a unique person. Mito, Sakura, and Rin have actually nothing in common. Writing so sexist it creates more interesting characters?!?!
Unironically, this is why I'm always saying that Sasunaru is the ship of all time, nothing will ever top it, you will NEVER do it like Sasunaru, etc. Every important relationship in the series is meant to evoke Sasunaru. (Notably, none of the explicitly romantic ones. But we're beyond such paltry understandings of the most iconic pairing of all time as fundamentally based in romance. We're operating on a higher level than that). This unbroken chain of toxic yaoi has culminated at the end point of Sasunaru, and it exists to parallel Sasunaru and define their relationship by the dysfunction of generations of tragedy. That's why Naruto has to consciously break the cycle and free them from the generational hate - it was the only way to save Sasuke. This is also why I'm always saying that Sasunaru is the point of Naruto, and that the entirety of Naruto is about Sasunaru. Come back to me when your work has invented new genders in the all-encompassing pursuit of toxic yaoi.
This also means that the only truly gender non-conforming individuals in Naruto are its mightiest heterosexuals: Minato (W) and Kushina (N). Truly insane. The N/S/W configuration is the societal norm, it's bonkers to make a major good-aligned male character a wifeguy. By Naruto standards Minato and Kushina are the only queer couple.
