you know what one thing i hope gets further explored in deltarune is the dark fountains and their effects on the darkners, particularly rulers like king and queen. since we know for a fact that the fountains affected them, but it's not entirely clear how, i have written down some thoughts of my own on it. they are mostly just theories and based on what i'd find the most compelling, especially considering the characters, but i do like the ideas i have for that.
first of all, it's confirmed that the fountains did have something about them that affected the rulers. in the undertale 6th anniversary stream, toby fox said that the fountain "changed [the king's] behavior" at around 3:00:14. also, the music trio says this when you talk to them about queen:
i think that the most popular explanation i've seen for this is that the fountains had some magical properties in them that made king's and queen's personalities worse and since they spent a lot of time close to the fountains, they were easily corrupted by them. while this explanation might have been what toby was implying â we don't know â i don't exactly... feel satisfied with this take. i feel like it takes something away from their characters, so i think i'll need to explain this further.
first of all, the king. what we know about his character is that his kingdom was abandoned by the lightners and therefore he swore vengeance and decided to take matters into his own hands. in fact, this is what it says when you check him:

we see him act accordingly: he's extremely agressive towards the lightners in chapter 1 and more passive, but still spiteful towards them in chapter 2. his change of mood between the chapters is often used as proof for the fountain changing his personality, but i think it could also be credited to the total change of environment for him. in chapter 2, he no longer has any power, authority or means to carry out his revenge he was so used to having before. therefore, he sees no point in trying to act aggressive or threatening anymore. also, i'd like to point out the way his info box is worded: the inciting incident that made his heart become "cracked with hatred" wasn't the knight or the fountain appearing but instead being abandoned by the lightners. it makes it clear that he very much wanted to have revenge on lightners even before the fountain appeared, and it's not just a drive the fountain gave him.
speaking of the king's revenge, the way i see the fountain is directly related to that. i see it more as a concrete means to achieve his revenge: something that changed his behaviour because of what it meant to him, rather than directly affecting him through any magical corrupting properties. we see him idolize the knight, despite of them being 100% likely to be a lightner, and i think that's because the knight created something that matters to him. i see it this way: the king became vengeful as his kingdom was abandoned, but as a darkner, he obviously had no way to affect the light world in any way, despite having the motivation to do so. when the knight appeared and created the fountain, he finally had a chance to change the way things were for real and he was happy to take that chance.
i believe the case is similar for queen, as well. her goal is similar to the king (to cover the whole world in darkness and rule it supreme) but her motivation is completely different. while the king wants to create this kind of a world to punish the lightners, queen wants to do it because she genuinely believes it will be an ideal world for them. the fountain obviously matters to her equally as much as it does for the king: the music trio even implies that the way the fountain's creation changed her was basically making her talk about it to no end. we see her try to achieve this goal throughout chapter 2, mainly through pressuring noelle into becoming the new knight and trying to turn the rest of the lightners into her peons. most of her schemes for that are reasonably goofy, but she can be threatening at times and is still very a much an "any means necessary" character. she shows few scruples about threatening to throw berdly to the acid, mind controlling him or capturing noelle and forcing her to create new fountains. she even says this:
she acknowedges that what she's doing might not be good and it might make her an "evil villain", but she doesn't see it as a problem as she believes it's for the best of everyone. in short, she's a very utilitarian person to the extreme. also, she doesn't seem to really consider other people's perspectives before making decisions, instead being sure that she knows what's best for them. i think she had these traits before the fountain as well, being controlling, overly confident in herself and having an "end justifies the means" approach but having a goal to achieve amplified these traits and made her act on them more. she, much like the king, seems to be calmer in castle town and without her own fountain, but i think that's very much for the same reasons as for the king: she doesn't believe she can or should take over the world anymore, and therefore doesn't feel the need to act aggressive to achieve that.
other than being something concrete to achieve their goals and therefore something that matters to them, the fountain could've also been something that affected them through being a liability. on one hand, you have an incredibly powerful tool that can help you finally achieve what you've always wanted, but on the other hand, it could easily be destroyed by lightners if they wanted to and your entire world would be gone should that happen. we see especially the king act territorial over the fountain, as he correctly believes the lightners have come to seal it. it would make sense for the fear of their fountain being sealed and their world being destroyed to affect them both and make them both want to protect it more fiercely.
finally, i also just think that the fountains being something that altered the king's and queen's personalities is something that takes agency away from them. now, as darkners, they inherently have very little agency as deltarune makes very clear: their fates could be completely altered by a snap of a lightner's fingers. in fact, the fountains being created is something that was outside of their both's control as well: had the knight not done that, neither of them could've never carried out their plans. however, it's important to me that despite this, both of them still have some agency.
the king is a character who very desperately wants to have agency and power. he rejects the power dynamic between lightners and darkners, being a darkner who resists lightners and wants to create a new world where his kind is no longer oppressed by them (he also wants more than that... instead of wanting to actually get rid of the power dynamic he just wants to turn it around, having lightners be below darkners instead. essentially, fixing injustice with a different kind of injustice). queen, on the other hand, is a darkner whose motivation still very much revolves around serving lightners. she wants to make them happy. however, instead of having the lightners make choices for themselves and darkners, she wants to be the one who makes choices for them. she very likely believes she's the only one capable of making such choices and decisions: even in her introduction, she calls kris and susie "foolish children" and herself a "computer (smart)". as a computer, she believes she's intelluctually superior to the lightners, she should control them because it's good for them. in short, it's important for both king's and queen's characters that they make choices, actual choices that matter.
so in conclusion? this is the way i like to see the fountains: as a powerful thing that both king and queen saw as useful for their goals and therefore found extremely important. again, there are a lot of other possible directions this could be taken to, so i'm not entirely against the idea of this turning out to be 100% false, lol. either way, i'm interested to see what toby does with this concept in the next chapters.

Europe should hijack Trumpâs revolutionary plans for the world
The Trumpian revolution has already changed the nature of European politics. Less than two months into the new White House administrationâs term, the European political scene has been transformed into a clash between Trump-allied revolutionaries and Trump-resisting âdo not bully usâ liberal nationalists. Now it is for the far right to justify Trumpâs anticipated tariffs on Europe, threatened this week at 25 per cent, and to ask Europeans to follow Washingtonâs leadership in foreign policy. By contrast, mainstream parties are acting as defenders of national sovereignty who hope to mobilise support by appealing to national interest and national dignity. The Munich conference also put an end to the heated debate about whether Trump should be taken seriously (meaning, not literally) or literally (meaning, not seriously). Now we know that he should be taken both seriously and literally. As Vladimir Putin, Russiaâs president, has aptly observed, Trump âdoes not simply say what he thinks, but he says what he wantsâ. His comments about taking control of Greenland or the Panama Canal represent not signalling, but intention. The US president is convinced that Americaâs strategic interest lies in making Canada the 51st US state. He strongly believes that he can split Russia from China, and he blames Americaâs âdeep stateâ for preventing him from achieving this in his first term. In this context, Europeans are wasting precious time pondering what will be Trumpâs plan for Ukraine and complaining about not being at the negotiating table. Getting Trump right necessitates first and foremost recognising that it is a revolutionary government in power in Washington, albeit one organised as an imperial court. Revolutions never have detailed plans. They run by timetables: meet the moment; donât project steps ahead. It is unclear what exactly Trump wants to achieve in his negotiations with Putin, but he wants to achieve something very big, and he wants to achieve it fast, very fast. What Trump offers Putin is not simply the prospect of ending the war in Ukraine on terms broadly favourable to Moscow, but a grand bargain to reorder the world. This includes Americaâs presence in Europe, and also in the Middle East and the Arctic. Trump promises Putin that Russia will be rapidly reintegrated into the global economy and that Moscow will regain the status of a great power that it lost in the humiliating 1990s. Trump hopes that this will convince Russia to sunder its alliance with China. The US refusal in a UN vote to condemn Russiaâs aggression in Ukraine shocked even some of the presidentâs most devoted admirers. But it was meant to persuade the Kremlin that the American leader is ready to do the unthinkable â and reconfigure the world as shaped by Ronald Reagan and Gorbachev in the late 1980s. [...] George Orwell once observed that âall revolutions are failures, but they are not all the same failureâ. What kind of failure the Trumpian revolution will be, we do not know. But what history teaches us is that the best strategy is not to resist the revolutionaries but to hijack their revolution. In doing this, Europeâs success will mostly depend not on its ability to resist but on displaying a talent to surprise. Could Europe find a way to benefit from not being at the US-Russian negotiating table? Should Trump be left to own his great peace plan for Ukraine and its implementation? In a moment of existential crisis like the present one, there is one valuable resource for the weaker party that stands out: political imagination.

Mitsukou Analysis: Omen Arc
Okay! My last bit of sunshine before plunging into the depths of misery. *annoyingly cracks knuckles* Letâs get to it <3

Why does Mitsuba bully Kou? Like many things in life, the answer is never simple. Which also means it isnât gonna be simple to explain. (Haaahhhh, my fingers are gonna hurt so. Bad. After. This.)
I believe itâs a combination between two factors: a want to be close to Kou, which is a task he accomplished through pranking him, making it necessary for Kou to track him down, and it simply being a part of his personality.
Kou brings out a teasing, cutely annoying facet of Mitsuba, so Mitsuba stealing the sign letter might just be his playfulness manifesting itself.

This reminds me a bit of when Kou commented during the PP arc about how supernaturals were âweirdly practical about this sort of thing.â Kind of like they donât want to get their hopes up.
However! Mitsuba⊠kinda has a point. Iâm not quite sure whether Kou understands this, that he canât stay with Mitsuba for as long as he would like.
Kou has, not exactly a child like innocence, but a sincere belief that anything can be achievable if you just work hard enough.
This analysis of Kouâs behavior has little basis in reality, but if you add it into the larger context of the series, itâll make small inconsistencies in his personality make sense, and for whatever reason, it just⊠feels right within his character.
For example, in the Sacrifice of the Grim Reaper Arc, either Yokoo or Satou (sorry, I canât remember which) noted that Kou never complained, which wasnât due to bottling his feelings up, but not understanding the concept of whining.
At first glance, this has nothing to do with my point, but hear me out here.
Perhaps Kou believes, on a subconscious level, that because no matter how hard he works nothing gets better, something is wrong with him and he doesnât have the right to complain.
Iâm 99% sure Iâm self-projecting, but if I find any more evidence supporting this, itâll become quite interesting to think about.

Ughhhhhhh. Youâre telling me the answer to why Mitsuba pranks Kou was here the whole time? I reallllllyyyy shouldâve reread all these panels before typing that whole lame-ass essay.
Pushing that aside.. âNo matter what I do⊠I just canât bring myself to dislike him.â
Okay, Iâm kind of stupid, and still donât completely understand why Nene wondered if that was why he spent time pulling pranks on Kou. Is it because heâs trying to combat his enjoyment of Kouâs personality?
Maybe my original thoughts were correct, and Mitsuba pranks Kou as an excuse to interact with him?
And- letâs just pause for a moment. Is it just me, or is that quote a tad bit romantic? If you cannot dislike a person, that implies you like them unconditionally, which sounds a whole lot like you have a crush on them.

I donât have much to say here, except for the fact that immediately after mentioning how it is impossible for Mitsuba to not enjoy being around Kou, we transition to Mitsuba asking Nene if sheâs scared of falling too deeply in love with Hanako.
Almost like when you bring up Kou, Mitsubaâs mind automatically thinks of falling in loveâŠ

Well, how nice. He went from a perverted stalker enchanted by Mitsubaâs good looks to a âcloset psychopathâ. What an improvement.
And yeah, Kouâs actions during the Nightlife arc really werenât logical, or something a sane person would do.
I believe I touched on this during my Nightlife analysis, but in summary, Kouâs decision to have a competition to see if he would basically assist Mitsuba in suicide based around a skill that not even Kou himself thinks heâs good at.
Actually, I might make a longer analysis on this, so let me know if you would like to read it :)

Right in the panel below, Mitsuba does get the answer to Kouâs question.
Heâs mad because he ran off to eat ice cream after he caused a huge inconvenience to KouâŠ
And this does logically make sense.
But the way Aidairo chose to present Kouâs reaction to Mitsuba telling him this has a sense of intent to it, as Kou and Hanakoâs faces parallel each other.
Why is this important? Since Hanako has a reaction that implies jealousy, something the reader can clearly infer, Aidairo paralleling his reaction is very telling.
If we are supposed to draw the conclusion Hanako is jealous, what conclusion are we supposed to draw about Kou?
And then, on Mitsubaâs side of the interaction, heâs either trying to make Kou jealous or Hanako jealous by framing he and Neneâs shopping trip together as a date.
Because he was talking to Hanako when he said this, the intent of this sentence was most likely the latter.

Tsk, tsk, tsk. Kou, isnât it a bit hypocritical to get angry at Mitsuba for trying to get you alone with Nene when you just tried to go out on a date with Hanako? (Rejoice, Hanakou shippers).
Although we donât actually know when he wanted to do this, so I guess it can be forgiven.

Okay, what have we got he-
âŠâŠâŠ..
Iâve got my work cut out for me, donât I?
Starting off with Kouâs expression in the 6th panel: itâs a mix between shocked, perhaps fear, but certainly not happy.
Which is odd, no? We have been lead to believe Kou has something of a small, innocent crush on Nene, so a negative reaction to his friend wanting to set him up with her is anomalous.
In the very next panel, which I didnât include for some reason, he tells Mitsuba, âDidnât you get the memo? All four of us are going,â with what I can only describe as a salty expression.
Now, for Mitsuba. I gotta break the news Mitsukou shippers, it is not looking good for his side of the relationship (in a does he like him sense).
If he was some form of displeased of how Kouâs friends were shipping him with Nene, he certainly isnât showing it, even asking if he would like to go on a date with her.
And this, toxic people on the internet who believe Mitsukouâs unhealthy because they âdonât care about each otherâs wellbeingâ, is why you are flat. Out. Wrong.
Mitsuba is actively attempting to make Kou happy by giving him an opportunity to date a girl he thinks Kou has a crush on. (Of course, Kou rejects the proposition two seconds later, but I already talked about that).

Not much to talk about here, besides the way Mitsuba and Kou are looking at Sousukeâs mother.
What is with that? Kou doesnât dislike her, so why would he have an expression thatâs honestly closer to disgust than anything else.
And then for Mitsuba, who has never shown any sort of discomfort or dislike for things related to Sousuke, it doesnât make sense for him to have the same disgusted/nervous/uncomfortable look that Kou has, so what the hell is going on?

Why not? Why arenât you sure about this? Is he worried being with Sousukeâs mom is going to bring up painful memories, or is he more concerned about Mitsuba pulling a prank on her?
So many questions, and yet so little answersâŠ! (Although Iâm sure if I just properly thought about it for 0.048 seconds the answer would be ridiculously simple, but my body is functioning on solely highly caffeinated tea and copious amounts of sugar.)

*clutching head* rodya and meursault would have such a good dynamic actually
I wonder if rodya would initially see meursault's indifference as like. a simpler version of her own feigned carefreeness and as a deliberate attempt to place himself as an outsider... only to realise that No, he really Is just Like That. and then she gets annoyed because it turns out that people who don't care about anything don't seem to be any fun.
(ofc he does actually care about a lot of things, just not necessarily his grander place in the world lol)
idk. nihilism vs absurdism. fun duo đ rodya would find meursault's genuine comfort with being a speck of dust in the universe baffling, while he would probably find her desire to assert her own importance pointless, but they could probably bond over little things like their shared desire to live in the present and appreciation of/indulgence in earthly joys. and meursault would probably listen if rodya wants to rant about anything without asking any uncomfortable questions. I think they could appreciate each other's presence.
#slamming my conspiracy board#listen it's not my fault meursault vibes with literally the entire female cast#rodya enjoyers help me out here please I haven't read crime and punishment am I talking out of my ass#I just think it'd be kind of interesting if like. rodya kills someone for a very specific reason (to assert herself as special)#while meursault kills someone for seemingly no good reason#but because of time place circumstance etc#meursault is the one made out to be the outsider to society#while rodya goes unacknowledged and all her motives backfire#like I'm not saying that meursault has Exactly what rodya wants or anything#but I think he Does possess a level of guiltlessness that she was trying to achieve through her self-confidence#also I find it interesting how pride is like. a big thing for both of them#like they both have excessive belief in themselves and their own abilities. in rodya it manifests as self-confidence or I guess. an ego#while in meursault it's more about. a belief in his own interpretation of the world rather than himself as a person? I hope that makes sens#also they both reject collectivist ideas which is. fun#neither of them perform to what a society would expect from them but for rodya it's an active effort to assert her individuality#while meursault just Doesn't Get societal conventions from the get-go unless they're explained to him#I think they also both tend to project a lot đ meursault expects his own indifference from others while rodya projects her own#experiences onto others' and makes assumptions based on that before knowing the full details#txt#limbus company#I feel too embarrassed to add more specific tags ngl đ đ đ#lcb meursault#lcb rodion#lcb rodya#nvm. feelings of cringe are for Losers I am Strong

answering a couple questions i got on this post since i realized ppl genuinely wanna know:
tl;dr:
israel lets very, very little aid get into gaza. even the UN can't get in as much as they want to. funding individual families, gazan led initiatives, and mutual aid collectives operating out of gaza ensures gazans can provide for themselves and pay for the extremely expensive aid that is available.
with all the civil infrastructure destroyed by israel, the situation on the ground has devolved into unrestricted capitalism, driving up the price of aid (that should be free!). this makes it more urgent for people to have funding for daily survival.
the post linked above has examples of how donating to individual families can help a lot. if you want to help more than one family at a time, there are many gazan-led initiatives focusing on rebuilding their infrastructure and distributing aid fairly that are worth donating to instead of large charities that already get the majority of donations.
as i mentioned in the last post: @/careforgaza on twitter is a nonprofit started by gazans, it's been endorsed by multiple palestinian journalists.
the sameer project is a collective organized by diaspora palestinians offering emergency shelter to gazans.
ele elna elak is a project aiming to bring water, food, shelter, etc. to gazans and has been promoted by bisan owda.
and the municipality of gaza itself is fundraising to rebuild water infrastructure.
all of these organizations are active inside gaza right now and are being run by gazans. if anyone knows of other gazan-led mutual aid projects, nonprofits or charities feel free to link them in the notes! hope this helped!
long answers under the cut!
if you wanna donate to a charity that's absolutely fine, but the thing is most charities (and even the UN!) are unable to make it into gaza in the first place, leaving aid rotting at the egyptian side of the border or subject to israeli settler attacks
not to mention, charities and nonprofits also maintain a paternalistic colonial relationship with the indigenous people they are trying to help, determining what aid they need for them instead of returning power to them and letting them make their own choices
i'm not here to say that one option is better than the other, just that they achieve different things and are equally legitimate. there's an attitude among people who question the legitimacy of these gofundme campaigns that somehow the people promoting them are telling them not to donate to charities. nobody is stopping you from donating to charities. we are just asking that you do not dehumanize the very real gazans in your inbox just because their method of asking for aid is more direct and risky.
unfortunately that's exactly what has happened. because israel destroyed all of gaza's more formalized infrastructure, it seems that organized crime and rampant inflation has taken its place. aid is supposed to be free, but in order to save for evacuation or the cost of living, people have started selling them at an inflated price. and aid that is truly free attracts intense, large crowds that are dangerous to navigate.
this was posted on abc a few days ago
it's pure, unrestrained capitalism. i've had multiple palestinians describe this situation to me confidence. that's why everything's so expensive now. why people have to rent out tiny plots of land for their tents to sit on, why my friend @siraj2024 still has to buy tarps to cover the broken windows of the overpriced bombed out apartment he rented, and why a bag of flour can cost a thousand bucks in the north.
even before israel closed and then bombed the rafah crossing, the egyptian hala travel agency was only allowing people to cross the border if they paid a hefty $5000 USD per adult / $2500 USD per child bribe. it denies doing this, but the hundreds of stories from palestinians say otherwise.
with regard to the economy, here in america we saw something similar happen in the wake of hurricane helene and milton. the podcaster margaret killjoy describes how she saw dual economies rise after asheville was fully cut off from the rest of the country - some people offered each other supplies for free in a sort of mutual aid honor system, and some people required payment when they lent supplies because they themselves needed to buy stuff for their families. these dual economies exist in gaza too. and this means they all still need money to survive.

so, one aspect of catelyn which i think is underrated (certainly the biggest adaptation loss which nobody talks about) is her, let's say superstitiousness, or better yet, let's call it genre-savviness, being one of the few adult characters open to magic and the supernatural in this fantasy world. we first meet her in the godswood, home of gods which are not truly hers, yet she is still very aware of their power. when she and ned talk of the deserter he killed, he hopes he won't have to go with the nw to deal with mance rayder, but she has even more fear of that idea bc there are worse things beyond the wall than just wildlings. ned scoffs and says she's been listening to old nan too much, but she's right. we already know from the prologue that she's right! and here she is, understanding the genre of their world better than her husband, who was actually born and spent his earliest years in this northern land of deep magic, listening to old nan's stories. same with the direwolves, where she was uncomfortable with them at first, but later believed in them as guardians from the old gods even after robb had lost his own faith. and once again, we know she's right even if she doesn't know the evidence to back up her instincts, bc summer and shaggydog did not fail bran and rickon and robb was almost certainly a warg like his brothers. (perhaps making it more fitting that she's the one brought back as a fantasy vengeance monster, not ned and robb, the most unbelieving dead starks.) and in her 2nd agot chapter, everyone focuses on her ambition in wanting ned to agree to the hand job (pun intended) and sansa's betrothal, and while she does recognize the value of their daughter being a future queen more than ned does, that's only her stated argument bc she thinks it's rational enough for ned to listen to. (if ambitious matchmaking were as important to her as to her father she never would have made those frey betrothals fandom loves to blame her for.) in her own head there's a deeper urge driving her. she keeps thinking of the dead direwolf with antlers in its throat, an omen which filled her with dread from the first she heard of it, before robert's arrival, and thinking of it again is what makes her desperate to convince ned not to refuse robert. she had to make him see. and really, she's not wrong, as jon snow would say. the dead direwolf was an omen of ned and robert getting each other killed. it's just one of those misread portents, with no way of knowing the danger to ned was in his loyalty to robert, not conflict with him. BUT the next time she's dealing with baratheons, she knows exactly what she's talking about. it's catelyn, not brienne, who sees the shadow slaying renly, and explains that it was stannis who did that through some dark magic. with no way of knowing how it was achieved and no prior expectation that such a thing were ever possible, she realizes with no hestitation that stannis was guilty and that his red witch was capable of pulling this off somehow. really, the only instinct of the supernatural she's wholly wrong about is her insistence that varys gathered his knowledge through some dark enchantment. however, though that might offend varys, given his own personal experience with a sorcerer, i'd say it's a reasonable assumption without knowing the dude had children moving through walls everywhere like oversized rodents. and imo it just shows she had a healthy respect and awe for varys's power which most other characters lack.
oh, oh, and let's not forget that she also believed in the curse of harrenhal, from her own childhood and the stories old nan told her kids. "and every house that held Harrenhal since had come to misfortune. Strong it might be, but it was a dark place, and cursed. 'I would not have Robb fight a battle in the shadow of that keep,' Catelyn admitted." sure, that wasn't enough to save robb, but he did not die from the curse of harrenhal. that doom was meant for his enemies from tywin lannister to roose bolton.

The Cook and The Teacher!
Let's pretend The Bear and Abbot Elementary are in the same city.
Another cute interaction between Carmen (Carmy) Berzatto x Abbot Teacher Femreader! Sunshinereader!
You sat at the table, doing your best to appear interested as your date droned on about his latest work achievements. Something about managing accounts, sealing big deals, and being âessentialâ to the success of his company. Youâd lost track of the details five minutes in, your polite smile starting to feel like a workout for your face.
ââŠbut you wouldnât get that,â he said, waving his hand dismissively, like you were a child. âTeaching kids and all. Itâs like... coloring books and snack time, right?â
Your smile faltered, and you tightened your grip on the stem of your wine glass, fighting the urge to roll your eyes. âNot quite. Itâs actually pretty challengingâteaching is about shaping young minds, not just... crayons.â
âSure, sure,â he said, nodding like he wasnât really listening. âBut you have to admit, itâs not exactly high stakes.â He leaned back in his chair, a smug grin stretching across his face. âI mean, no offense.â
âNone taken,â you replied tightly, though the bile creeping up your neck said otherwise. You took a slow sip of your wine, hoping the glass might serve as a buffer between his words and your patience. Spoiler: it wasnât working.
Inwardly, you cursed yourself for agreeing to this. What had Ava said when she pitched the idea? âGirl, youâre way too cute to be single and wasting away in that apartment of yours. You need to get out there. Shake things up. And this guy? Total catchâtall, successful, and probably rich. Youâre welcome.â
At the time, it had seemed like a good idea. Avaâs relentless confidence had rubbed off on you, and the idea of putting yourself out there sounded... productive, if not promising. After all, your secret crush on your cute neighbor wasnât going anywhere.
Carmy.
You couldnât help but think about him as Ben prattled on about his âhuge network.â Carmy was quiet, focused, and sweet in a way you didnât think he realized. But he was also impossible to read. Sure, youâd had a few conversations here and there, shared a laugh or two, but heâd never made a move. You hadnât eitherâparalyzed by the thought of misinterpreting things and embarrassing yourself.
Which is how youâd ended up here, with Ben. Wonderful, condescending Ben, who clearly thought your lifeâs work was a joke.
âAnd this place,â Ben said, gesturing around the restaurant with a smug grin. âPretty great, right? Super exclusive. I know a guy who knows the chef here. Heard heâs like, a genius or something. Figured weâd go all out.â
You glanced around the dimly lit space, suddenly more aware of the upscale decorâthe polished wood tables, the soft amber glow of the overhead lights, and the quiet hum of conversation that seemed to fill the air like music. It was... fancier than youâd expected.
The Bear.
Youâd heard of it, of courseâwho hadnât? It was one of those places people raved about, where getting a reservation was an accomplishment in itself. The kind of place where you know the food would be incredible, but the bill would make you question your life choices. Nice, but you were pretty sure you could only afford, like, a cup of water here.
Ben leaned in closer, grinning smugly. âThis chef guy? Supposedly some kind of prodigy. I donât know the details, but people say heâs a big deal. Good thing Iâve got connections, huh?â
âMhm,â you hummed, noncommittal, as you glanced toward the bustling kitchen. A wave of heat and light spilled out from behind the pass, where you could just make out the shadowed figures of chefs moving in synchronized chaos.
As you sipped from your wine glass, trying to find something redeemable about Benâs endless self-promotion, you wondered if maybe Ava had oversold this whole âdating adventureâ thing.
Carmy spotted you the second you walked in.
Heâd been at the pass, focused on plating an intricate dishâa delicate arrangement of seared scallops and edible flowersâwhen his gaze drifted toward the dining room. His hands paused mid-motion, a faint crease forming between his brows as he recognized you.
You were hard to miss, sitting near the window in a corner booth, your posture poised but just slightly tense. Dressed in something a little sleeker than usual, you looked... different. Not in a bad wayânever in a bad wayâ Not that you ever looked anything less than beautiful, but tonight, something about you seemed⊠striking, enough that he found himself staring longer than he shouldâve.
His eyes flicked to the guy sitting across from you. The guy who was laughing too loud, leaning back in his chair like he owned the place, gesturing with wild hands as he talked. You, on the other hand, wore a polite smile that didnât quite light up the room as it usually did.
Carmyâs jaw tightened. He wasnât sure why the sight of you with someone else tugged at his chest the way it did, but it lingered, heavy and unwelcome.
Itâs none of your business, he told himself, forcing his focus back to the dish in front of him. You werenât his to worry about.
You werenât his at all.
Still, his gaze flicked back toward your table, almost involuntarily, catching the way your date seemed oblivious to your discomfort. Carmyâs stomach twisted at the thought. He didnât know what he expectedâmaybe for the guy to notice the way you played with your napkin or to tone down his boisterous toneâbut it wasnât this.
âChef?â Sydneyâs voice broke his focus, sharp but professional.
âYeah,â he muttered, snapping back to reality. His eyes returned to the plate in front of him, the arrangement now slightly skewed from his distraction. He adjusted it quickly, his movements precise but tighter than usual. âThanks, Chef.â
As Sydney moved on, Carmy risked one last glance at you. The corner booth, the dim lighting, the guy who couldnât seem to shut upâit all felt wrong. But he pushed it down, buried it under the quiet rhythm of the kitchen, telling himself it wasnât his place to care.
And yet, he did.
He cared enough to, like some kind of creep, step out of the kitchen and hover near the hallway that led to the restrooms. It wasnât a planânot really. He told himself he just needed a breather, a moment to clear his head and shake off the knot in his chest. But he wasnât fooling anyone, least of all himself.
The low hum of the restaurant buzzed in his ears as he leaned against the wall, his arms crossed tightly over his chest. He didnât even know what heâd say if you saw him. Maybe heâd play it off, and act like he just happened to be there. But then, what were the odds youâd even notice him? You were here with someone else, after all.
It was ridiculous, he knew thatâirrational evenâ he should go back, really what the fuck was he thinking--
But the sound of heels clicking softly against the floor pulled him from his spiralling thoughts. His breath hitched as you turned the corner, and your expression turned to one of shock when you spotted him.
âCarmy?â you said, stopping mid-step. Your voice carried a note of surprise, but there was something else there tooâcuriosity, maybe, or even relief at seeing a familiar face in such an unfamiliar situation.
âHey,â he said, standing a little straighter, as if he hadnât just been loitering near the hallway like a guilty teenager. He cleared his throat, trying to play it cool. âDidnât think Iâd see you here.â
You blinked, your eyes flicking over his clothesâthe crisp white uniform. The realization dawned on you, and your brows lifted in surprise.
âYou work here?â
âYeah,â he said, shifting his weight slightly. âI, uh... I own it.â
Your eyes widened, and you couldnât help the soft laugh that escaped you. âYou own it?â
âYeah,â he said again, a bit softer this time. His lips twitched into a faint, almost sheepish smile. âI started it a while back. Kind of⊠a long story.â
You took a moment to process this revelation, glancing around the restaurant as if seeing it in a new light. The warm lighting, the carefully plated dishes youâd glimpsed on their way to other tablesâit all made sense now. Of course, this was Carmyâs place. It was thoughtful, deliberate, but somehow unpretentious.
âWow,â you said, meeting his gaze again. âThatâs... impressive.â
Carmy shrugged, his hands slipping into his pockets. âItâs just work. Nothing fancy.â
âNothing fancy?â you repeated, a small laugh escaping as you gestured toward the elegant decor. âCarmy, this place is gorgeous. Youâre way too modest.â
"Thanks," His lips twitched into a faint smile, but his eyes lingered on you, searching before he added, âYou didnât look like you were having a great time out there.â
You blinked at the sudden change in topic, your surprise melting into something closer to embarrassment.
âOh,â you said, glancing toward the dining room before meeting his gaze again. âYeah, itâs... itâs a date.â
Carmyâs jaw tightened imperceptibly, though his expression didnât waver.
âFigured,â he muttered, his voice steady but low.
âNot a great one,â you admitted, your lips quirking into a dry smile. âBlind date, courtesy of Ava. Itâs... fine, I guess. Heâs just... not my type.â
Carmy raised an eyebrow, his curiosity getting the better of him. âWhatâs your type, then?â
The question caught you off guard, your breath hitching slightly as his words hung in the air. You laughed softly, deflecting. âI donât know. Someone who doesnât treat teaching like itâs a hobby or call it a job anyone can do.â
His lips twitched into a faint smirk, and he shook his head in disbelief. âHe did not say that.â
You groaned dramatically, closing your eyes as if the memory physically pained you. âOh, but he did. Word for word, and I quote: âTeaching is important, I guess. But itâs gotta be, like⊠easy, right? Summers off, finger painting, all that?â And thenâthen!âhe laughed. Like heâd just unlocked the secret to stand-up comedy.â
Carmy blinked, his smirk fading into something closer to incredulity. âYouâre kidding.â
âI wish I were,â you said, sighing dramatically. âYouâd think he was trying out his Type Five for open mic night. And the piĂšce de rĂ©sistance? He throws in the classic âno offense.â Like thatâs a verbal Ctrl+Z or something.â
That earned a real laugh from Carmy this time, his shoulders shaking slightly as he shook his head. âWhat the hell? So, this is what youâre dealing with?â
âOh, but Iâm thriving,â you replied, your tone dripping with sarcasm waving your hand dismissively. âPeak romantic energy. Nothing like being told my career is a glorified arts-and-crafts workshop to really get the sparks flying.â
Carmy leaned slightly against the wall, crossing his arms as he listened. His expression was unreadable, but there was a flicker of something in his eyesâirritation, maybe, or quiet disbelief. âAnd youâre still out there?â
âExcellent question, Chef Carmy,â you said, pointing at him with mock gravity. âI think itâs a mix of morbid curiosity, sheer stubbornness, and maybe a touch of guilt. I mean, he did spring for the wine. Even if he did refer to it as a âtop-shelf pour.ââ
That made Carmy snort, his head dropping slightly as he tried to compose himself. âTop-shelf pour, huh? Sounds like a real charmer.â
You laughed softly, though there was a bite of bitterness in it. âOh, totally. Itâs been a real dream date. Honestly, if he makes one more crack about teaching being âeasy,â I might justââ You mimed strangling someone, your hands curling dramatically as you added a mock growl for effect.
Carmy chuckled, the corner of his mouth quirking up. âIâd pay to see that.â
âDonât tempt me,â you shot back, your grin sharpening. âIt might get me out of this date, but Iâm pretty sure assault charges arenât a great look for me.â
He huffed a quiet laugh, shaking his head. âFair point.â
Your playful energy dimmed slightly as you glanced toward the dining room. âAnyway, I should probably get back out there before he starts mansplaining the wine list to the waitress. Again.â
Carmyâs lips twitched as if he wanted to laugh, but instead, he straightened up quickly, the weight of his role as head chef settling back onto his shoulders. âYeah, I should... head back to the kitchen too. Got a lot to wrap up tonight.â
You turned back to him, your expression softening. âThanks, by the way,â you said, holding his gaze. âFor... checking in, I guess. You didnât have to do that.â
He shrugged a gesture that looked casual but felt like it carried more weight. His voice dropped slightly as he replied, âYeah, I did.â
The words hung there for a beat, his meaning lingering just beneath the surface as the two of you locked eyes. The air between you felt heavy, almost tangible, like a thread being pulled taut. You wanted to say somethingâanything. Maybe a joke to break the tension, or maybe the truth: that you liked him, that you wished it was him sitting across from you tonight, making you laugh instead of testing your patience.
Unbeknownst to you, Carmyâs thoughts ran dangerously close to yours. Heâd been replaying every interaction with you since the day you moved in next door, every laugh, every casual smile. The thought of you with someone elseâsomeone who didnât seem to notice the little things about you the way he didâmade his chest tighten in ways he couldnât explain.
But before either of you could give voice to the thoughts swirling in your heads, the faint sound of your dateâs voice carried through the hallway, breaking the moment like a needle scratching across a record. You winced slightly, the weight of reality pulling you back.
âUgh. Thatâs my cue,â you said, shooting Carmy an exaggerated grimace. âDuty calls.â
Carmy nodded, his expression carefully neutral, though the flicker in his eyes betrayed the emotions he was trying to keep in check. âGood luck out there.â
âThanks,â you said with a wry grin. âIâll need it.â
Despite his words, his gaze lingered on yours, as if searching for something unspoken. For a moment, you thought maybeâmaybeâheâd say something more, but instead, he stepped back, the faintest of smiles tugging at the corner of his mouth.
âSee you around,â he said, his voice quieter now.
âYeah,â you replied softly, your heart squeezing as you turned to head back toward the dining room. âSee you around.â
As you walked away, you couldnât shake the feeling that you were leaving something unfinished behind. And Carmy, watching you go, felt much the same, his hands flexing at his sides as he fought the urge to call after you.
When he finally turned back toward the kitchen, his jaw tightened, the moment still playing over in his mind. He rubbed the back of his neck, willing himself to focus as he pushed open the swinging door. The familiar clatter and hum of the kitchen greeted him, but it did little to drown out the thoughts circling his head.
He barely made it three steps before Richie appeared, leaning casually against the counter with his signature smirk firmly in place.
âWell, well, look who finally decided to grace us with his presence,â Richie drawled, crossing his arms. âWhatâs the matter, Cousin? Lose track of time out there? Or were you too busy making googly eyes at the customer? Can't blame you thought, she's gorgeous.â
Carmyâs jaw ticked, his shoulders stiffening. âShut up, Richie.â
--------
Your dateâs voice droned on, a monotonous background noise to your growing sense of regret. Why had you agreed to this? Why hadnât you just stayed home with a glass of wine and a good book?
Just as you were contemplating an excuse to leaveâfeigning a sudden headache, maybe, or an urgent call from a friendâa waiter approached your table. It wasnât the same one who had been serving you throughout the evening, but an older guy with an easy smile and a glimmering of mischief in his eyes carrying a small plate in hand. The plate held an assortment of beautifully arranged pastries, each one delicate and intricate, like a tiny work of art.
âOh, I didnât order this,â you said, your brow furrowing as you looked up at him.
âItâs from the chef,â the waiter replied, his tone polite but with a glimmer of something knowing in his eyes.
Your eyes widened slightly, your breath catching as you glanced instinctively toward the kitchen pass. Sure enough, Carmy was there, leaning slightly against the counter, his arms crossed. His expression was unreadable, but there was a faint smirk tugging at the corner of his mouth, and his gaze was fixed squarely on you.
Your heart gave a little jolt, heat creeping up your neck as you turned back to the table.
Your date, meanwhile, was entirely oblivious to the silent exchange. He grinned widely, puffing out his chest a little as he gestured to the plate. âSee? Told you this place was top-notch. They mustâve recognized me. Perks of being a regular.â
It took everything in you not to burst out laughing. Instead, you bit back your amusement, your lips twitching into a barely restrained smile as you reached for one of the pastries.
âRight,â you said lightly, turning the pastry over in your hand. âMust be your VIP status.â
As you took a bite, the pastry practically melted in your mouth, a perfect blend of buttery richness and delicate sweetness. It was so good it almost made you forget the company you were keepingâalmost.
âYou know, this kind of attention doesnât happen just anywhere. Itâs all about knowing the right people.â
âMmm,â you murmured, taking a bite of one of the delicate confections. It melted in your mouth, rich and buttery, with just the right amount of sweetness.
When you glanced back toward the pass, Carmy was already gone, disappearing back into the kitchen as seamlessly as heâd appeared. But his gesture lingered, wrapping around you like a quiet reassurance, a small thread of comfort in an otherwise unbearable evening.
And for the first time that night, your smile wasnât forced.

đŹđźđŠđŠđđ«đČ: after a terrible day at work, you find an unexpected dose of comfort in an absurd late-night conversation with your coworker.
đđšđ§đđđ§đđŹ/đ©đšđđđ§đđąđđ„ đđ°: spencer reid x newbaumember!femalereader, you make a huge mistake at work (unspecified) for which you get seriously chewed out by hotch, too many beds trope, ridiculously long considering the entire plot revolves around a single conversation, gets kinda wild at the end, spencer hits his head, but itâs nothing serious
đ/đ§: the ending inspired by a situation from my life, but donât worry, my head is fine now (in the general sense of the word) (no one kissed my forehead...) i recommend reading it in bed before sleep <33
đ°đšđ«đđŹ: 5.7 k
"Hotch, but I thoughtâ"
"It doesn't matter what you thought," your boss replied in his typical, emotionless tone, which in this particular situation sent a distinct chill down your spine. Every word he uttered felt like a frozen dagger, driven straight between your ribs and left there, while the coldness spread across your skin in the form of goosebumps. "What you did was not only reckless but also undermined all of todayâs hard work by the entire team. They put tremendous effort into locating the unsub and cornering him at that specific location, and because of your decision, he managed to escape. Every additional day this man remains free could cost someone their lifeâan innocent person."
You stood before him in an empty parking lot across from the hotel where your entire team was staying. It wasnât exactly the typical setting for delivering a reprimand, but since you were far from the office, there wasnât a better option at hand. And while you were teetering on the edge of tearsâtears you were desperately holding back to avoid appearing like a weak little girl in his eyesâyou were grateful for one thing. Grateful that he had chosen to chastise you in private. One-on-one. Away from everyone else.
A moment of silence fell between you, and you tried not to lower your head like a chastised childâbut thatâs exactly how you felt. Not just ashamed, but overwhelmingly guilty. As someone who had only recently joined the BAU, youâd never made such an egregious mistake before. A mistake that could cost someone their life. Deep down, you had clung to the naive hope that this moment would never come. That if you followed the instructions of those more experienced than you with feigned confidence, something like this could be avoided.
But reality had placed you in a completely different positionâone where, for a brief moment, the weight of everything rested squarely on your shoulders. You failed, and the unsub escaped.
The wind around you blew with a certain bitterness, tugging at your hair. It drowned out the sound of your heavy breathing, your racing heartbeat, and the loud gulp as you swallowed. Hotch, saying nothing, studied you with a measured gaze. You couldnât help but wonder if he regretted allowing you into this job.
âI wanted you to be aware of that,â he said, his tone less harsh now but tinged with a certain disappointment that only deepened the guilt gnawing at you. He nodded, signaling you were free to go. âThatâs all I had to say.â
He walked away, and watching his figure dissolve into the darkness in such a dramatic manner, you couldnât help but let out a laugh. The laugh immediately turned into the beginning of a sob, which you quickly stifled, waving your hand in front of your face. You stood there for a moment, your feet seemingly rooted to the parking lot, as though the concrete were still fresh, hardening around your shoes.
In your experience, failure almost always came hand in hand with a sense of vulnerability, transporting you into a completely different, weaker body, one without any shields. All the achievements of the past few years, including making it into the BAU at such a young age, seemed to melt away, and once again, you were nothing.
You knew you couldnât stand there all night, but in a way, it felt safer. In the motel, you might run into someone from the team. You might accidentally meet their gaze, and youâd see the disappointment in their eyes. After all those weeks of trying to prove your worth to them, of showing that you even belonged in this job, the last thing you wanted was to face that look.
To muster some courage, you took a deep, slow breath. You needed to slip into your room unnoticed, lie down in bed, hoping that the night would at least slightly cleanse you of your guilt. Hotch was absolutely right. Not only had you wasted an entire day of hard work, but youâd also put civilians from that area in danger. What if tomorrow another person became a victim?
The thought tormented you so much that by the time you reached your door, you were massaging your temples. You inserted the key you had picked up from the front desk into the lock, turned it, and was about to pull the handle⊠but it was locked. Frustrated, you figured the universe had simply decided to unite all of its forces against you as some kind of punishment. Before you could resort to a tired kick at the door and curl up in a ball in the hallway, you tried again. This time, the door opened without issue.
So absorbed in yourself, your situation, and your grievances, you didnât even notice that inside, not only was the light on, but there were someoneâs belongingsâand, most importantly, someone else. It wasnât until you took off your coat and stepped further into the room (if you could even call it that, it was an exceptionally small space) and came face to face with Spencer Reid that you realized you werenât alone.
You stopped mid-step, stunned as if the least expected thing at that moment had just appeared before youâa turtle on stilts wearing a cowboy hat, or some other kind of religious prophet.
Quick noteâthis wasn't the first time you and Reid had shared a room during cases. Specifically, the bed. It all started when you found out he struggled with a fear of the dark, and someoneâs presence really helped him feel better. In fact, at first, he insisted on sleeping on the floor, but you couldn't just watch him suffer on that uncomfortable surface every night. And, you had to admit, sometimes after an especially harrowing day in your, letâs be honest, stressful job, it felt nice to fall asleep next to someone.
As usual, it was him who came to you. Late at night, to your room, when he felt like sleeping would be particularly difficult. He was never there from the startâŠ
"It turns out all the rooms here are double," he blurted out hastily upon seeing you, his tone overly explanatory.
When you walked in, he was in the middle of pulling something out of his suitcase. He straightened up, and you noticed he was wearing a loose T-shirt, his hair damp from a shower, and in his hand, he held that familiar white sweater you often teased him about, the one with an embroidered bear wearing glasses.
"I mean, the rest of the team got roomed together too, so weâre not some weird exception. I hope this doesnât bother you. If it does, well, maybe we can switch somehow⊠I know Elle and JJ are together, and I think they only have two beds in their room, but maybe... or I could go with DerekâŠâ
"Oh, come on," you waved dismissively, your tone sounding a bit irritated, like you were shooing away an annoying fly. The truth was, you were exhausted from the day and didnât want to worry about the accommodation on top of everything else.
Reid stopped mid-sentence, his lips slightly parted. You felt guilty again as you had no reason to speak to him like that. He hadnât done anything to deserve your frustration.
"I'm sorry," you sighed, your tense posture easing a little as you realized you were no longer outside, under the sharp, yet truthful words of your boss. "Really... I'm sorry, Reid. It doesn't bother me at all. Not one bit," you reassured him, sincerely.
He studied you in silence for a moment, his face showing a concerned, analytical expression.
"Actually, weâve shared a room before," you added almost immediately, forcing a little chuckle. "And not just once. Well, at least now we have two bedsâŠ"
"Did you... did you talk to Hotch?"
The question was asked with hesitation, on a breath. Well, it finally meant confronting everything that had happened that day. You looked him straight in the eyes, searching for judgment or any hint of dislike toward you. But there was none. Instead, you found concern and discomfort at the fact that he had even brought up the subject.
"Itâs... itâs okay if you donât want to talk about it," he quickly corrected himself, giving a slight nod. "You... you have every right, I donât expect you to explain anything to me, your conversation with the boss is your private matter... oh God, I feel like with every word I say, my statement is losing more and more sense, and Iâm getting more and more tangled in it, isnât that right?"
He stared at you with furrowed brows, waiting for your reaction. It turned out to be... a burst of laughter. You honestly couldnât help yourself.
âI hate to admit it, but yeah, youâre right. You completely lost your train of thought. Maybe we should just pretend Iâve only just walked through that door, huh?â
âThatâs... thatâs actually a very good suggestion. So... so, uh, hi?â
Your lips curved into a smile, this time genuine.
âHi, Reid.â
He managed to improve your mood in less than five minutes after youâd received a serious reprimand. You were immensely glad to have ended up with him in the room lottery. Shaking your head in disbelief, you began getting ready for bed without a word. He didnât say anything either, sensing you needed a bit of space after everything that had happened. Speaking of space...
âThis room is alarmingly small, donât you think?â you said, returning from the shower and slowly sliding under your blanket. Fifteen minutes under scalding hot water had helped your body relax, and you no longer felt like you might throw up on your own feet at any moment. âItâs like some sort of exclusive cupboard under the stairs. Still a cupboard, though. Look, I can practically touch you.â
You stretched out your arm to demonstrate. Sure enough, even though you were sitting on neighboring beds, your fingertips almost brushed the fabric of his shirt. Between you was a massive nightstand made of dark wood, the same as the windowsill and the floor. On it sat a slightly old-fashioned bedside lamp with a glass base and a slightly yellowed lampshade. Other than that, there wasnât much furniture. Not that there wouldâve been room for any.
âDo you hear that?â Reid asked enigmatically, sitting up straighter on his bed.
You looked at him, intrigued.
âListen closelyâŠis thatâŠpaper rustling? Morgan drafting his resignation?â
You chuckled. Your coworker had a particular sensitivity to the motels you stayed in and their condition. He firmly believed that since you risked your lives almost daily during dangerous cases and investigations, you deserved accommodations that were at least decent. And that wasnât always what you got.
âDonât worry, as long as the shower has hot water, we donât have to fear him leaving,â you said. âThough now that I think about it, I canât blame Harry.â
âHarry?â
âPotter. If I lived in such a claustrophobic little room, Iâd convince myself I was a wizard too. Can I turn off the lamp?"
You politely asked, as usual, leaving plenty of room for potential conversation. Aware of his fear, you always ensured he felt comfortable with the encroaching darkness. Reid looked at you with a hint of hesitation.
"Maybe... maybe it could stay on for a bit longer? If that's..."
"Thatâs okay," you finished for him, knowing what he intended to say.
A fleeting, grateful expression crossed his face. Seeing it, a small smile tugged at the corner of your lips. You were glad he no longer felt as ashamed of his unease with the dark. Besides, you preferred the light to stay on too. You were afraid of what the darkness might concealâthe worries and anxieties it could bring⊠already was bringing.
Mainly, it was the looping words of your boss, the thought of how you'd messed up, and the rest of the team. Well, there was one thing that eased your mind in that regard: knowing that Reid was lying in the bed next to yours and recalling the look on his face when he saw you. He wasnât angry that youâd let the unsub get away. Maybe the others werenât as furious with you as youâd imagined.
Or maybe it was the opposite?
Maybe he, as the second-youngest member of the team after you, was the only one showing you any understanding. And the others, perhaps, harbored nothing but disdain, their resentment growing stronger at the mere thought of youâŠ
"You're shivering."
Reid's observation reached your ears as you lay on your side, facing away from him. His voice was gentle, blending seamlessly with the quiet that had previously enveloped the room, not cutting through the sound of your sleepy breaths but accompanying it. Not knowing how to respond, you gave a small shrug. He probably saw itâyou could feel his gaze on you. It wasn't intrusive, just a worried glance from the corner of his eye.
"I could turn up the temperature if you're cold. Do you want me to?"
Your trembling had nothing to do with the cold, but admitting that felt like too much. You pulled the blanket tighter around you, trying to steady your restless body.
"Yeah, if you donât mind," you murmured in response.
It was easier to blame it on the chill. Still, hearing him get up and move toward the thermostat, you felt a pang of guilt for pulling him out of bed. He should already be asleep. There was so much work waiting for you both tomorrow. Another day of the investigationâa case that could have been solved already if not for youâŠ
"I'm afraidâŠit doesnât seem to work," Reid said thoughtfully. He fiddled with it for a moment longer before letting out a sigh and returning to his bed, though he didnât lie down right away. He paused in the narrow space between your beds, and you felt his gaze again, wondering what it meant this time.
"Maybe⊠I donât know, would you want my sweater? You know which one. It'sâŠtoo warm for me, but since you're freezingâŠâ
Reidâs voice was soft, tinged with an almost shy kindness that made your chest tighten. You didnât need to turn around to picture the small, uncertain smile that likely accompanied his offer. Of course, you knew exactly which one he meant. He had received it as a Christmas gift from Penelope, and it was quite light and breathable. But what truly made it a staple in his pajamas was the adorable bear wearing glasses that appeared on the front. Sometimes, when you slept in the same bed, you could feel the softness of its fabric.
You had just turned toward him, a hint of hesitation in your eyes. You werenât actually coldâyou had been lying about that all alongâbut still... the offer lingered in your mind. His kindness, followed by the concern. You felt that taking his specific sweater, which was not only comfortable but also... well, his, could effectively calm your trembling limbs and ease your anxiety.
"Would you like to give it to me?" you asked, making sure. "You don't have to."
He shrugged slightly and immediately bent down to grab the suitcase tucked under the bed. The sweater in question was right on top, so he could reach for it at any moment when he felt the need for an extra layer.
"I know I don't have to," he replied, pausing for a moment with the sweater in hand. "But, you know, I want to. It's just a sweater."
"Won't Penelope be mad if you're giving it away like that?" you asked, raising an eyebrow.
"Sheâd be furiousâŠ" he started, his gaze fixed stubbornly on the edge of your bed, his forehead lightly furrowed. After a serious moment of hesitation, he sat on the bed, as gently as if he feared it would burn him. He stretched the sweater out towards you. "âŠif I gave it to anyone else. But in this case, she'd probably scold me if I didnât give it to you."
You took it from him. Though it wasnât one of those thick, bulky sweaters, it felt surprisingly heavy in your hands.
"I wouldn't be so sure about that," you replied after a moment of hesitation, letting out a sigh. "After today."
Reid looked at your face in silence. Suddenly, you started regretting not turning off the lamp after all. His gaze seemed piercing, too piercing. It surely noted every shadow of doubt and shame cast by the subtle changes in your expression.
âThatâs whatâs worrying you, isnât it?â
For a moment, you both stared at each other in silence. You sighed, shifting slightly to the side, making room beside you.
âCome on. Itâs easier for me to talk when I donât have someone directly in front of me.â
Surprised, he stared at the small space next to you, shaking his head slightly.
âBut⊠this bed is kind of ridiculously small, donât you think?â
âIâm not that wide, Reid. If thatâs what youâre suggestingâŠâ
âThatâs absolutely not what I meant, and I definitely wasnât suggesting anything,â he quickly explained. âWell, maybe apart from the fact that every tiny movement will risk us both falling offâŠâ He looked at you with an unchanged expression, patiently pointing to the spot next to you and sighed in defeat. âOkay, I feel like Iâm not winning this oneâŠâ
Well, he had a point. After a while of shifting around, trying to find a position where you wouldnât keep elbowing each other in the ribs, and after countless accidental jabs and whispered apologies, it ended with him half-lying, half-sitting, leaning against the headboard of the narrow bed, while you lay flat on your back, your head resting on the pillow. His figure cast a gentle shadow over you, making the room feel darker than it really was. It had a calming effect. Or maybe it was just the presence of someone so close by. Or perhaps it was the touch of the soft sweater, the fabric resting between your fingers, in the way one holds a rosary. Maybe it was a little bit of all those things.
"I screwed up today," you said. Though your voice was soft, there was no trace of gentleness in your tone. From the way you were lying, you could see his face, and you noticed his lips part slightly, as if to deny it. "And don't try to convince me otherwise, Reid. I knew that even before Hotch said it to my face."
You heard him sigh softly.
"I guess it wasn't a pleasant conversation."
"Oh, Reid, it was like a horror movie. But I don't blame him for anything he said. I deserved to hear it all from someone else's mouth, not just from my own head." Restlessly, you began to fiddle with the sweater like a stress toy. He watched the movement of your hands, alternating between that and the slight trembling of your chin. "At least the talk with him is over. Now I'm scared... scared of whatâs with the rest of the team."
You voiced your biggest worry out loud, and there was a silence as he pondered it.
âI think⊠I think weâve talked about this before,â he replied finally, clearing his throat. âAbout how youâre afraid of what others will think of you. And I donât want to repeat myself, but... you need to look at it a bit differently. We all started somewhere, we were all rookies. If we got mad at each other every time someone messed up, well, there wouldnât be a team. Of course, we keep in mind all the mistakes we've made in the past..."
âYou're good at comforting...â you muttered bitterly.
"...But we donât dwell on them unnecessarily," he finished. "We're only human, you know. Itâs estimated that each person makes about five to seven mistakes a day. If we assume you live to be about eighty... though of course, I wish you much more than that, that would be between 150,000 and 200,000."
You snorted, listening to those statistics.
âI feel like Iâve already used up half of my lifetime quota today,â you confessed, while also reflecting on the first part of his statement. About the team, who, according to him, wasnât going to hold a grudge against youâŠ
Reid paused for a moment, glancing at you out of the corner of his eye.
âItâs not the end of the world,â he said after a while. âJust make sure youâre really careful when youâre old. You wonât forget when your grandkids have birthdays.â
âDamn, I think thatâs the problem. Iâve got the memory of a goldfish. Iâll probably mix up their names. Or call them all by the same one. The prettiest one, of course. The least common one.â
âJust make sure you get a good calendar,â he suggested. âOne thatâll remember everything for you. Dates, names.â
âAnd the number for the rheumatologist.â
âAnd the number for the rheumatologist,â he agreed.
You spent a long moment without bringing up any new topics, but laughing quietly about the course of the conversation. If you looked at it that way, this was probably the only time in your life you talked to someone about being an old lady with a questionable memory and joint problems with amusement rather than sheer terror. Although the bed was seriously small, you felt more comfortable than ever before. You were sinking deeper into the mattress, into his side, into relaxation. You wondered if and when, or even if, he planned to go back to his own bed. There was really no reason for him to stay...but was there any reason for him to leave?
âAnd you?â you spoke again after a long moment. You felt like the only way to keep him around was by saying something. Not that you were desperate to have him stay⊠âHave you ever messed up on a case? Like, seriously messed up?â
"I could lie and say I haven't," he noticed.
He shifted slightly, likely due to exhaustion, as his back had been slowly sliding down the headboard for a while, until it finally sank into the mattress. His head rested on the pillow right next to yours, closer than ever before. Well, you could only blame the narrow bed for that. Because of the tight space, you had to lie on your side, which meant your breath brushed against his cheek.
"You could. But then I'd ask Elle for the truth, and you'd only end up compromising yourself."
"That's true. That's why I'm telling you. Just promise you won't laugh."
"This sounds serious. Come on, what did you do?" you asked, genuinely curious, a smile tugging at your lips. "Oh, or let me guess."
He lay on his back, his gaze fixed on the ceiling. However, when you suggested it, he slowly and hesitantly turned onto his side as well, so that you were face to face. He probably wanted to see your reaction, the laughter you'd burst into once he told you, whatever it was.
"You have three guesses," he announced. He tried to gesture to you encouragingly with his head, but then, for a split second, his chin brushed against yours. Slightly flustered, he quickly froze again.
For a moment, something changed in your breath. You bit your lip, thinking. His gaze briefly dropped to it.
"Okay, so thatâs the first one," you said, taking in more air than you probably needed. You didnât really understand what was happening, but it seemed like you were running out of oxygen faster than you should have been. "Did you confuse your weapon with a taser?"
"Really, that was the first thing that came to your mind when you thought about a mistake I might have made?" he scoffed. His breath warmed your face in a pleasant way.
"Oh, sorry, but itâs really hard for me to come up with anything when it comes to a genius with eidetic memory," you replied, rolling your eyes. "I donât know, did you lose some evidence? Something really important?" you suggested, trying to read confirmation from his brown, unusually gentle eyes at that moment. He gently shook his head.
"Now, I honestly donât know. Okay, this might sound like some soap opera plot, but here goes. Were you supposed to keep an eye on a potential victim and ended up having a passionate affair with them?"
You lowered your voice to a flirtatious whisper as you said the last words.
For a moment, he held your gaze. He met it like an opponent, sending an exciting shiver down your spine. And it wasnât because of the cold. But then, he submissively lowered his eyes. You let out such a strong burst of laughter that you started to worry if you had accidentally spat on him.
"Spencer Reid, youâre joking with me, right?"
He turned back onto his back again, avoiding looking at your wide-open mouth and amused eyes. You propped yourself up on your elbow, gently nudging his shoulder.
"What kind of... seductress beast are you? Because I don't know how else to call it," you muttered, still shaking your head from side to side. "Wow, I didnât know this side of you."
"Thereâs no side like that," he replied defensively, closing his eyes with some embarrassment. "It was... she was an actress who had a stalker..."
"An actress?"
"...and it just happened that way! But it was definitely a mistake. And it wasnât any... passionate affair, as you called it. I put her in unnecessary danger when we kissed in the pool..."
"In the pool?"
"Oh, why do I even keep talking?" he groaned, pressing one hand to his tightly closed eyes. He suddenly snorted. "Sure, laugh even louder. Gideon and Derek in the next room won't mind if you wake them up."
"Oh, don't change the subject now. You seduced an actress. Was she famous?"
"I didnât seduce her..."
"So, she seduced you?"
Reid sighed, resigned.
"Well, Iâd put it that way," he admitted finally, quietly, with a certain childish indignation, as if he had simply decided to surrender to the onslaught of your questions. He didnât reveal much, but after a moment, you learned a few important details about the case, and with some... relief, you realized you didnât recognize the actressâs name. But why relief?
Suddenly, however, the hysterical amusement faded, leaving you with a genuine dilemma. Reid was still lying on his back, avoiding your mocking gaze and comments. Before you could stop yourself, you lightly touched his arm to get his attention. He nodded questioningly.
"I know this might be a very strange and, above all, an extremely personal question, but what does it take to seduce you?" you asked.
Reid froze, his eyebrows shooting up to his hairline.
"What? What do you mean?"
"I just realized that Iâve probably never seen you actively filter anyone. Consciously, that is. Because sometimes it happens, and you donât even notice it," he opened his mouth to protest, but you quickly covered it with your hand. Confused, he looked down at it. "Donât even try to deny it, everyone would confirm it. But Iâm trying to imagine the kind of person you would lose your head for, and Iâve got a few conflicting ideas. So, Iâll repeat the question. What does it take to seduce you? Asking for a friend, of course."
Reid flinched as if alarmed.
"What friend?"
"My God, itâs just a figure of speech."
He sighed, and the way he shook his head showed a certain disbelief.
"Youâre surprisingly hyperactive, considering the time. Maybe we should go to bed?"
"No, I asked you a question," you protested. "Does she have to be pretty? Smart? Probably both, right?"
He looked at you with the same expressionâsimultaneously embarrassed, disbelieving, shocked, amused, offended, and above all, thoroughly confused.
"I feel like this question is going to keep you up tonight. So, for the sake of your own sleep, Iâll answer briefly. And I donât care if my answer satisfies you or not." Reid paused, and you waved your hand, urging him to continue. He sighed. "She just... has to seem... interesting."
"Was there any more evasive answer?" you snorted, disappointed.
"Did you expect an entire essay?"
"Well, honestly, yes. Last time you talked to me for over thirty minutes about bioluminescence and what causes it. You were able to go on and on about that, but not this time?"
You knew by now you were just teasing him, playing with his nerves as if it were an instrument you'd been mastering since early childhood, attending lessons three times a week and slowly climbing the ranks of your musical career.Â
Your conversations often felt like a game of ping-pong, with each of you exchanging comments, remarks, observations, and verbal jabs at a pace that was downright wild. Time completely vanished for you then, feeling as though you could carry on such a dialogue forever.
"Goodnight," he finally said, without much firmness in his voice. Well, that was probably more out of practicality than a strong desire to end the chat. It was indeed late. "I hope I don't bump into you too many times during the night. Or you into me."
"So, you're already tired of talking to me?" you asked, feigning hurt. You even tilted your head dramatically.
For a moment, he hesitated to reply, his brown eyes nervously scanning your face, a barely noticeable smile tugging at his lips.
"Quite the opposite," he finally responded. You raised your eyebrows, not allowing yourself to feel satisfied with his words in case they turned out to be pure sarcasm. "SoâŠgoodnight."
As a result of some sort of scuffle, you found yourselves in a rather chaotic position. Well, you were definitely taking up most of the bed, comfortably sprawled in the center. He lay more on the edge, somewhere between lying on his back and on his side. Looking at him and his slightly flushed cheeks, which were quite an endearing sight, you suddenly realized the meaning of his earlier words. I hope I don't bump into you too many times during the night. So he did intend to sleep with you on this narrow bed, when there was a perfectly empty one, entirely at his disposal, just beside you? An unexpected choice, but⊠you werenât complaining. In fact, you were kind of okay with it. With a slightly enigmatic expression, you leaned closer to him, intending to say something softly.
Reid perked up, as although he had officially ended the conversation, he was still curious about what you were about to say.
"Goodnight," you said slowly, inhaling the scent of his freshly washed hair. You should have moved away, giving him space to settle more comfortably, but you wouldn't be yourself if you didn't add, âSeductive beast."
âGod, nothing in life will ever make me regret more than telling you about this,â he sighed, genuinely concerned about that prospect.
You let out a snort and were about to mumble something else when he, with resignation, turned fully onto his back. Well... at least he tried. He was so close to the edge of the mattress that it simply ended beneath him.
You shot up into a sitting position, startled by the sudden noise and the chaos that filled the room.
âSpencer,â you managed to gasp, jumping off the bed to check on him.
It wasn't an easy task; everything was submerged in darkness. If falling off the bed itself didn't sound like one of the most humiliating accidents a person could have, adding to it the fact that he had hit his head on the wide dresser next to the bed made it worse. And, as a result, the nightlight had been knocked over and shattered...
Fumbling, you reached for the light switch, and when the room was lit again, you moved to him. Kneeling beside Reid, who was slowly propping himself up, you gently held his shoulders.
"Careful, Jesus, you hit your head so hard..."
He squinted and furrowed most of his face, letting out a sharp breath.
"Does it hurt a lot?" you asked, carefully inspecting his head and looking for any serious injuries, maybe some blood... but you saw nothing
Spencer looked at you with a sort of seriousness, as if the pain had suddenly faded.
"What else is it supposed to do, tickle?"
For a moment, the room fell quieter, but it was impossible to ignore the mutual sense of relief that things hadnât turned out worse. His words threw you off a bit; at first, you didnât fully grasp their meaning. Instead, you focused entirely on analyzing his face, his body language, his behavior. You were afraid he might have a concussion.
"I have absolutely no medical training, but..." you paused, casting another worried glance his way. Reid was slowly starting to shake off the shock and disorientation. "But judging by how quickly your sarcasm came back, Iâd say youâre going to be fine."
He let out a noise somewhere between a scoff and a groan.
"Doctor of the year, right hereâŠ"
Just then, a loud knock echoed on the door. The door to your room
âIs someone murdering you guys in there or what?â Morganâs concerned voice called out.
You exchanged glancesâboth equally confused and, in a way, slightly terrified. Clearing your throat, you spoke up.
âWell, since Iâm the reason this whole situation happened, I guess itâs on me to explain to him how it even got to this point,â you sighed. When he didnât react, you raised your eyebrows. âNo objections? No heroic offers to take this off my hands?â
âNot a chance,â he replied curtly, shaking his head before wincing briefly as another wave of pain clearly shot through it.
You told him, worried, to stay down for a little while longer for his own good.
âAnd as my mom used to say,â you added, slowly starting to stand, glancing briefly toward the door. Morgan knocked againâor rather, pounded on it hard enough to nearly take it off its hinges.
Taking your time, you rested both hands on Reidâs shoulders in an almost protective gesture. Completely ignoring the surprised look on his face, you brushed your lips against his forehead.
âA kiss will make it better.â

The door of the apartment you shared in Monaco opened, and before Oscar could step inside, he heard excited screams that made it clear someone was more than happy about his arrival. Â
Not only did your cat start rubbing against his leg while purring, but also you, his girlfriend, were hopping towards him, barefoot and wrapped in one of his McLaren hoodies, which turned out to be even bigger on you than you had expected when you decided it would be a great idea to steal it from your boyfriend. Â
"You did it, Osc!â you squealed as you threw your arms around his neck. "Osc, oh my God, you won a race! Do you know what that means?"Â Â
Oscar felt his cheeks turn red. Of course, he knew exactly what winning a Grand Prix meant, especially during his second season in Formula 1. However, all he did was shrug, as if his achievement wasnât that important. Â
"Yeah," was all he could say. Â
"Iâm so, so proud of you," you said in a trembling voice, standing on your tiptoes to cup his face in your hands. Â
"I couldnât have done it without you, even though you were here," Oscar replied sincerely, a hint of regret in his tone. If there was one thing he regretted, it was that you hadnât been there with him throughout the whole process of stepping onto the podium. Â
"I know you would have liked me to be there, and I wouldâve loved that too," you replied, making a sad but funny face. "But itâs okay! I screamed at the TV a lot, so I guess I helped in some way⊠And Iâm sure youâll win more races and Iâll be there to see them all, so itâs not the end of the world!"
Oscar chuckled and pulled you close until there was no space between you. He allowed himself a few moments to hold onto you, gently running his fingers through your hair while you clung tightly to his shirt, pressing your face into his chest as if he might disappear at any second. Â
"Hey⊠I have something for you."
Even though you whispered it, Oscar heard you perfectly. You bit your lip,. a telltale sign of nervousness he knew well, as you pulled away from him. Then, you quickly headed towards the living room, with the Australian following you, and grabbed a small book he had never seen before. Â
Carefully, as if it were fragile, you handed it to your boyfriend. Â
"Open it⊠I hope you like it!"
Oscar did as you asked. Gently, he opened what he soon realized was a photo album. It wasnât just a collection of pictures of you from the past two years since you started dating. It was beautifully decorated. There were messages, and even reflections from your perspective about each memory you had built together. Â
"I know itâs not a big deal, but since I was so bored with studying, I have to admit I procrastinated a bit and felt like doing some crafts, so⊠well, this was the result," you said hesitantly, as if you were confessing a crime, though a small smile crept onto your lips. "Maybe you were expecting something else, I donât know, but I hope you like it. You could even take it with you whenever you have to travel, so you remember me and also add something else if you feel in the mood," you added softly. Â
Oscar felt a lump in his throat, unsure of what to say. Although he was used to you being thoughtful, and he always tried to reciprocate, you somehow kept outdoing yourself. Â
"Y/N, this isâŠ" he trailed off, struggling to find the right words. More accurately, he didnât know how to express them. "Itâs incredible. Thank you so much."
You smiled and gave him a gentle kiss on the lips, which, as you both expected, quickly turned into something more desperate, fueled by your hunger for each other. Â
Oscarâs hands found your waist beneath the hoodie, his fingers tracing invisible lines along your skin, moving up and down, even toying with the clasp of your bra. The only thing you could do was keep kissing him, tugging at his hair lightly and pressing yourself against his thigh, seeking friction to ease the growing ache within you. Â
Then, you suddenly pulled away, more abruptly than Oscar had expected. Your pupils were completely dilated, your lips swollen, and your hair a complete mess. Â
"OscarâŠ"Â
"Y/NâŠ"
"I want to do it."
Your voice was barely a whisper. Oscarâs eyes widened, surprised because, even though he perfectly understood what you meant, hearing you say it out loud was an entirely different feeling. Â
"BebeâŠ"Â
"I really, really want to do it, Osc," you repeated, more as a confirmation to yourself than to him. "Yesterday, you lost your v-card in Formula 1 with your victory, so⊠I was thinking maybe I could lose mine too." Â
Oscar had known from the very beginning of your relationship that you had never been physically involved with anyone beyond a couple of kisses and teasing. At first, you had been insecure about telling him, worried about feeling ashamed, but Oscar had always made sure you felt safe and comfortable, promising you would only take steps forward when you were truly ready. Â
Today, your words made clear that you finally felt like that moment arrived, and that filled Oscar with happiness not because you were about to have sex, but because it meant you were finally comfortable enough with yourself to take that step. Â
"Are you⊠sure?" he asked, even though he already knew the answer. "You know we donât have to rush anything⊠I donât want you to feel like we have to do this just because, you knowâŠ"Â
"I know, Osc, and I promise I wouldnât be bringing this up if I werenât sure," you reassured him, looking into his eyes as you ran your fingers over his hands. "I love you, and most importantly, I trust you. Iâve thought about this for a long time, and well⊠yeah."
"Itâs just⊠I donât want to mess anything up, Y/N. This is really important, and it should be perfect,â he confessed with a nervous chuckle, rubbing the back of his neck. Â
You smiled, cupping his face and bringing him closer for a kiss. Â
"It doesnât have to be perfect as long as itâs with you, Osc.â
"Okay, but⊠if you change your mind at any point, you tell me," Oscar insisted. You laughed, rolling your eyes. Â
"I promise, really."
Your lips met again, but this time much slower. Oscar took his time kissing you carefully, wanting to do everything right. He cradled your cheek with one hand to deepen the kiss, while the other wrapped around your back, guiding you gently toward the bedroom you shared. Â
Once inside, he forced himself to stop and take a deep breath to avoid panicking, even though there was no reason to. Â
You stood in front of him, looking at him with a mix of shyness and adoration that reminded him of your early days, when you just used to go out for coffee or to the movies back in high school. Â
Oscar couldnât help but look at you with an equally shy, yet utterly endearing, expression. Â
"Tell me if you want me to stop, alright?"
"I will, yeah."Â Â
You didnât need to say anything else since kissing spoke for you. You took your time, enough for Oscar to make sure you felt completely comfortable, enough for you to overthink just a little more before deciding if you really wanted to continueâŠÂ Â
*"I love you, OscarâŠ" you murmured between kisses. You tugged at his shirt, helping him pull it off, running your hands over his bare chest as if you were seeing him for the first time. Â
"I love you too, Y/NâŠ"Â
With nerves and hands shakier than he would have liked, almost as if he were the inexperienced one, he took hold of the hem of your hoodie and slowly lifted it over your head, leaving you in just your underwear. Â
Oscar was surprised to see you in black lace lingerie instead of the usual shorts you wore around the house. He was about to say something, but you didnât give him the chance. You closed the distance between you, pressing your foreheads together before kissing him once again. Â
Neither knew how long you were like this, but you both agreed that it had been long enough to discover that you needed more of each other.
Oscar ended up forcing himself to pull away from you and take a breath. A smile curved between his lips, which caused you, somewhat nervously, to giggle at the situation and hug him around the waist, pulling him closer to you while trying not to shove him away.
âReally, we don't have to do it if you don't want to, Y/N,â the McLaren driver insisted once again.
âI've been looking forward to doing this for a long time, and I've been mentally preparing for it for a while,â she told him, trying not to sound uneasy. âI trust you, Osc, and there's nothing for you to worry about.â
âSo...?â
âI want you to make me yours, Oscar. Today, tomorrow or whenever and wherever you want,â you whispered in his ear as sensually as you could.
âY/NâŠâ
âOscar: I just want you to fuck me.â
You felt your boyfriend tense up after those words that had caught even you off guard. Instinctively, you brought your hand to the noticeable bulge under Oscar's pants, but when you tried to reach for the button to unbutton them, he pushed your hands away lovingly.
âNo, honey, none of that for now. Today is your day, so let me do the work and just enjoy yourself.â
Oscar, without another word, took you by the chin and kissed you again for the umpteenth time that day. Now, your lips moved at a slower speed. You guessed it was because you noticed how one of Oscar's hands began to massage one of your breasts, giving special attention to the nipple. With the other, he lightly brushed your pussy, making you gasp when he decided to play with your clit.
âDo you like it, babe?â he asked in a tone of voice that showed too much excitement.
His fingers now delved a little deeper into your intimacy, those enveloping movements becoming a little faster.
âYes, Osc...â you barely managed to answer.
That answer was enough for the Australian to stop immediately. You didn't even look him in the face. Oscar pulled away from you, leaving a quick kiss on your lips and starting a trail of kisses all over your body, stopping once he reached your lower stomach area.
âY/NâŠâ
His hands stood delicately on your thighs, which he was now kissing, closer and closer to your pussy. Your hair stood on end. Your breath was completely held, unable to breathe in case that put an end to it all, as if that would be enough for Oscar to finish whatever he was doing with you.Â
âIf anything we do tonight makes you uncomfortable and you want to stop, just tell me please,â the Australian declared. âAnd, before your little head starts thinking nonsense: no, I'm not going to get mad at you because you don't want to have sex, okay? If you don't want toâŠâ
âOscar, look at me,â you cut him off, and the boy immediately listened to you: âit's you, and I'm not going to feel uncomfortable with you and with anything you do to me.â
âDo you promise me, love?â
âI swear.â
Oscar nodded, grabbing your thighs again and dragging you to the edge of the bed so that his face was in front of your pussy, perfectly aligned with your entrance.
Without warning, he slid his tongue, flat, all over it with a slowness that was completely unbearable and that seemed that, rather than pleasing you, he wanted to kill you little by little. His movements were frantic; constant changes of speed, from faster to slower, and vice versa, that made his nose rub against your clit while his tongue seemed to do wonders with that dance.
When Oscar's tongue began to explore inside you, and his index finger, the one he used to show on camera every time he got a first position just like Sebastian Vettel did in his golden age, started a tortuous tour of your labia majora, you curled up shyly but instinctively. Your hands ended up tangled in his hair, forcing him closer to you at the same time your hips did the same.
âI think you're liking it, aren't you my little girl?â Piastri said, ending his oral contact with you and replacing it with his finger. His gaze was fixed on her, and you thought about why he hadn't done this to you before.
âDon't stop, Osc. For the sake of God, don't even think about stopping...â you gasped, becoming increasingly unable to articulate a word.
He didn't have to say anything else. After those words, Oscar slipped a second finger inside you. You let out a small gasp of surprise and he, without taking his eyes off you, laughed, your cheeks turning red almost instantly. Despite this, he kissed your thighs as he continued the back and forth with his index finger, adding his heart almost soon after while increasing even more the speed.
You felt that everything was going too fast, and the waves of pleasure that were flooding you were making you lose, more and more, the notion of time. You didn't know at what point, but when he decided to add his tongue back into the equation, without leaving the movements of his fingers inside you going straight to that spot that gave you the most pleasure, a strange sensation gripped the lower part of your stomach.
It was getting harder and harder for you to hold back your orgasm. You felt how your eyes were closing little by little, and your leg, too, to which Oscar put a little pressure on them to prevent them from closing.
âCome for me, love,â Oscar let you know. âCome on, Y/N, you've got it babe. Come onâŠâ
And so you did.
Your back curved in such a way that your body, completely sweaty, could hardly keep on writhing as it was doing. You were moaning like you had never moaned before, and your boyfriend seemed to notice. A smirk of satisfaction and success began to break from his lips as he licked at your fluids, his mouth moving slowly now, over-stimulating your clit and making you incessantly.
The Australian rose and carefully positioned himself on top of you.
âI love you, Y/N, you don't know how much,â he said between kisses, making you taste yourself for the first time, but hopefully not the last one. âYou are the most beautiful girl in the world... And the best girl in the world. Don't ever doubt it.â
âOscar, don'tâŠâ
âYes you are, Y/N, and I will not allow you to speak so negatively about yourself.â
After those last words, the driver pulled away from you slightly, trying yo give you some time to recover. Then, you looked at him taking what seemed to be a condom from the bedside table, which he carefully put on and immediately positioned at your entrance.Â
You swallowed, while Oscar tried not to think about whether he was really going too fast.
·I don't want to sound weird, but... please, if you want me to stop, just tell me,â Oscar spoke as best he could, trying not to succumb to the nerves he felt about taking this important step with you. âI want you to be pretty sure about this since⊠Well, since thereâs not going backâŠâ
You said nothing. Instead, you gave him a slight nod with your head, still looking at him, which was enough for Oscar to enter you carefully, but without a previous warning.
He decided to stand for a while so you could get used to his length. You felt a little pain. You held back a scream, bit your lips and closed your eyes to do your best to make that feeling go away as soon as possible.
âY/NâŠâ
âGo on, Oscar. It's all rightâŠâ
The boy nodded, and finished entering you with the same care. Little by little, his movements gained speed. You arched your back, moaning incessantly as she started feeling more comfortable with the depth of penetration, and Oscar hitting her in a spot that made her feel a pleasure that you feel in a way you didnât know how to describe, but that felt good enough to make you never want that sex session to end.
âDoes it feel good, honey? Are you enjoying my... cock... for the first time?â Oscar moaned, biting her neck. âLook at you⊠so desperate for me to keep fucking youâŠâ
âFuck, Oscar... this is a fantasy,â you gasped. âAnd you talking so... like⊠like this... God... Don't stop, pleaseâŠâ
âNever for you, sweetheart.â
Your moans became one, a melody that your neighbors were probably listening to but you didnt give a fuck. Your gazes could hardly be averted, and your words, getting dirtier and dirtier as much as your were embarrassed at first, were sounding louder and louder, as were your pleas.
âOscar!â you shrieked as you felt Oscar's fingers press against you nervous bundle.â
âLove...â he moaned through his teeth. âDon't stop moaning my name, please. You don't know how you're making me feel right now.
·And of course I'm going to make you feel so much better when we do this again,â you replied, choking with pleasure. As best you could, you sat up a little and wrapped you arms around you boyfriend's neck. âI want to do it again, Osc,â you made it clear. âI want us to do this every time we get the chance....â
You kept moaning his name, giving him promises you knew he would never break. He kept reassuring you and how good you were doing, speeding up his movements as he couldnât stop playing with your clit, all of that while he kept telling you that you were his.
You couldn't contain it anymore for the second time that day.
âFuck, Osc,â he stammered. âI think I'm gonnaâŠâ
âLet yourself go, honey,â the brown-haired said. âYou can do it, love. Cum for me.â
Your orgasm came before you could say anything else. Oscar came within seconds of you, and as soon as he did he ended, he gave you a short kiss on the lips as he carefully pulled out of heyour and collapsed beside you.Â
Oscar's gaze remained fixed on the ceiling. You rested your head on his shoulder, trying to regain your composure with increasingly slower breaths.Â
âYou ok babe?â Oscar murmured after a few minutes.
âYes,â you whispered, nodding your head with a smile peeking out. âBetter than ever, actually.â
It was then that it dawned on Oscar. Quickly, he sat up a little and saw what was under where you were still positioned. His heart began to race, and a pressure settled in his chest as he realized the light blue bed sheets were stained slightly with blood as was his condom, still on him and which he hadn't paid attention to because he just wanted to be with you cuddling after he'd made you lose your virginity.
âHey, listen, loveâŠâ he started to say in a calm, but concerned tone.
You followed his gaze, and couldn't help but blush and die of embarrassment inside.
âOh...â you spoke quietly, instinctively covering yourself with the sheets. âThis... is normal. Well, I guess soâŠâ
âDoes it hurt? Are you hurt?â
You shook your head, denying it, though the look on your face seemed to say otherwise.
âWell⊠It's just a little... just a little sore. But it's fine, really. It happens when you have sex for the first time with someone.â
Oscar studied your face, and he knew you wanted to stop this conversation. You wanted to let it go and pretend everything was fine so you wouldn't give him any sign that you hadn't liked it, even though your moans and pleas seemed to say otherwise.
âStill, you shouldn't let it go.â
The Australian approached you and gave you a shy kiss on the forehead. Then he got out of bed, still naked.
·Where are you going?â you asked in a voice mixed with curiosity and nervousness.
âI'm going to get a towel with hot water to clean you up.â
You opened your mouth to protest, but he was already heading towards the bathroom while taking off his condom. As you heard the faucet turn on, and your boyfriend getting everything ready, you couldn't help but feel bad because, maybe, Oscar deserved better, and your behavior, what was happening to you now, was not what he deserved.
You forced yourself to stop overthinking because if thereâs one thing you knew for sure is that Oscar loved you, more than sometimes you were conscious of.
Your boyfriend came back a few minutes later, and found you sitting on the bed, curled up on yourself and clinging to the sheets while still covering with them, as if you were afraid.
âYou don't have toâŠâ
âI know,â Oscar cut you off, offering you a small smile, âbut I want to. So, please, just let me take care of you.â
Your eyes softened at his proposal, and you forced yourself to calm down as Oscar, with his gaze and his hands coyly on your thighs, asked your permission to spread your legs. You nodded, and he carefully ran the wet towel and hot water over your pussy, giving it little touches because he didn't want to risk it stinging or hurting any more because he really didn't know exactly how the female body worked after losing your virginity.
When he finished, he kissed her knee and sat down next to her again, also covering himself with the sheets so he could hug her and, more than anything else, try to reassure her and make her feel as good as possible.
âThere, that's it, all settled. Now, let's stay here and rest.â
âWas it good?â
Oscar let out a small laugh from his mouth at your sudden question as he leaned over to you and snuggled into your shoulder.Â
âYou've been amazing, love,â he replied, wrapping his arms around your waist and pulling you closer to him. Now you were both lying on your bed, looking at each other. âAre you okay now that⊠Did I hurt you? I need you to be honest with me... I should have asked you if you liked the pace I decided to take because, well, Iâm not going to lie to you, I think I could have gone a little slower...â
You shook your head and didn't give him a chance to keep talking. Instead, you grabbed his face and pressed your lips to his.
âYou don't have to worry about anything, Osc. It was far from perfect. So, from now on, I hope you win more races because from today on, winning sex has become a tradition that I hope we keep for a long time.â
Oscar laughed, knowing you were completely serious.
âWe can make a tradition of this and anything else you want, love,â he buried his face in yours, and began to tickle your waist gently. âWe can even have several rounds if you want, so⊠thoughts on that? Should we keep ready for a second round today?â

take a seat | s.r
hi thank u for requesting!! i tried to be ambiguous about readerâs size but if it doesnât come across that way lemme know and ill fix it!!!
wc: 1.7k
cw: 18+ smut minors dni, afab reader, face sitting, munch!spencer my beloved, insecure!reader who i took to be a little self indulgent sorry, fluff, hurt comfort but no hurt lol
this is also not proofread sorry
_______________________________________________
the thing about spencer is if you have any fear or qualm about anything, his main verbal form of comfort is information. and itâs not a bad thing, not at all. finding comfort in the facts is what spencer hopes to achieve when he spews his tidbits. itâs just, sometimes itâll do more harm than good, or even worse, do nothing at all.
thatâs where youâre at right now, sitting in spencerâs room with your legs tucked under you while he sits up at the head of the bed. the top buttons of his dress shirt are undone, tie strewn somewhere in the room. youâre still fully clothed albeit in a loose t shirt and some panties. the want in his eyes is undeniable, his question still lingering in the air.
you werenât exactly the most confident person, but was anyone really? did people really wake up in the morning, look at themselves in the mirror and say, âwow, i look beautiful today.â? tell themselves theyâre going to have a good day because they said so?
so when youâd spent your whole life living in the shadows trying to blend in and just do your job, one day an ever observant spencer reid saw you struggling to carry your coffee and your bag into the bullpen and came to your rescue before it could spill all over you. you were a mumbling mess, uttering thank youâs and iâm so sorrys and iâll be more careful next time. but his gaze on you was unwavering, even in the face of your uneasiness, and firmly but softly told you nothing was wrong, and suggested that maybe you and him should get coffee before work to avoid this rush next time.
falling in love with him was too easy after that.
spencer never failed to make you feel cherished, loved, safe, always going above and beyond to care for your needs and wants. the trust you had in him was immense and you knew he would never steer you astray.
so sitting in front of him on his bed while he adorns a small smirk asking, no telling, you to sit on his face, made you falter a bit.
âyou want me, to sit on your face?â
he nods, âyeah.â
any thought youâve ever had vanishes from your brain, âbâbut, wonât it be uncomfortable? for you?â
ânot at all.â
seeing spencer be surprisingly calm about this is having the opposite effect on you, creating the unsettlement in your gut. like heâs been thinking about this for while, has wanted you at his mercy in a way you havenât experienced before, has thought through all the facts and possibilities and ruled with absolute certainty that this was what he wanted, needed. and right now your body is betraying your mind as the heat pools between your legs.
but that brain of yours, a blessing with its vast knowledge but a curse at how easily a single thought can send you into a deep spiral, is working overtime to convince you that this isnât really what he wants.
he can see the cogs working overtime and scoots closer to you and places a comforting hand on your thigh to rub soothing shapes with his thumb, âwhatâs going on in that pretty little head of yours?â
ânothing i-â you stop before you can get too deep.
his eyes look at you expectantly, luring you to continue.
âwhat if i hurt you?â
âthat is literally impossible.â
âwhat if i suffocate you?â
âthen that would be a great way to go out.â he chuckles.
you lightly slap his leg, âstop that.â
he gestures you closer to sit curled into his side, a comforting arm smoothing you up and down. âif you really donât want to do it thatâs okay i donât want to push you, just want you to feel good sâall.â
you ponder for a minute, ââŠyou would tell me if itâs too much right?â
âi would,â he nods, âbut i wonât need to.â
he squeezes your hand in reassurance, and you remember that spencer reid would never lie to you.
which is why you say, âokay.â
his eyes light up like a carnival, âyeah?â
you take a deep breath, âyeah.â
âcome here,â cupping your cheek to bring in and kiss you.
it starts off slow, deliberate. like he wants you to know how much he appreciates you placing your trust in his possession, and how gently and carefully heâs going to take care of it.
you hike a leg over his lap to straddle him and wrap your arms around his neck, letting his lips mark you like a road map. he moves down your jaw and uses his nose to nudge your neck away, giving him better access to litter the skin with love bites.
the moans spilling from your mouth spur him on, he starts subconsciously bucking his hips up causing you to grow restless for more.
he senses this and motions for you to lift up on your knees above him so he can slide his body down flat between your legs. the warm palms of his hands rest where your thighs meet the swell of your ass.
you look down at the sight of him laid out for you, and catch his shit eating grin staring back. the dichotomy this position gives you with a sense of power to be over him like this but the vulnerability at feeling so exposed caused a swirl of emotions for you.
âhey,â he squeezes his palms laid on your ass, âif this is a lot, thatâs okay.â
âno, no.i think i want this. iâm just scared.â you softly admit.
ânothing to be scared of, angel. itâs not like i havenât eaten you out before, itâs just a different position,â his hands move closer to your core, âlet me make you feel good, please.â
you stare into his eyes once more, being met with nothing but trust and lust for you. with a deep breath, you nod your head.
he smirks again, âalright sweetheart, take a seat.â
you slowly inch your body up his own, hearing him outwardly groan as your cunt came into his line of sight.
âjesus fuck, you have the prettiest pussy.â
you preen at his words once youâve reached the position, and you hover in hesitation. he wraps his arms under and around your legs and gently pulls you down.
and he attacks you like a man starved. his tongue licking a full stripe up your cunt, letting it swirl around your clit. the feeling is so intense in this position you have to lean forward and brace yourself on the headboard.
with a gasp you whine out his name, âoh my god, fuck.â he continues to use his tongue to barrel you towards your peak, knowing exactly where to touch and lick to rile you up.
he can tell youâre still holding back, feeling the tense muscles in your upper thighs harden under his touch. with a sharp tug he pulls you to be seated fully on his face, and he lets out a deep groan that vibrates through your whole body.
youâre fully at his mercy now, held down by his large hands and his mouth working so hard to make you see stars. the pleasure is overtaking all of your senses, when you look down to meet his eyes theyâre staring right back at you, reveling in your ecstasy. a languished moan leaves you as you tangle your hands in his hair and pull.
he laps up your arousal with urgency, tongue moving in such a delicate and intricate way you would think heâs writing a love letter with it.
the coil in your gut starts to tighten and you can feel your peak coming fast, âspenceâŠâ you whine.
he hums in response, silently acknowledging what you mean. one more slow lick up and down your slit was all it took to push you overboard. the endorphins rush over you like a tsunami as you try to ride out the wave of your orgasm.
spencer doesnât stop his motions and continues to work your overly sensitive clit, gripping your legs tighter to him as he prevents you from escaping.
âshit, oh god baby, you need to stâstop.â you brokenly moan out. you tug on his hair hard as you try to release his grip on you, and after a few minutes he takes pity and lets you go.
you let out a big and tired sigh as you flop to the side of him, one leg still draped over him as youâre both panting heavily, attempting to come down from the heat of the moment.
he smoothes out the leg over him with his hand and turns to face you, face plastered with a stupid grin and glistening with you.
âsee? that wasnât so bad.â
you scoff breathlessly, âi think maybe youâre trying to kill me.â
âmaybe,â he laughs, â but you liked it right?â
you nod bashfully, âdid youâŠlike it?â
his eyes widen, âare you kidding? you looked so hot it drove me insane. youâre always so beautiful but having you like thatâŠi like making you feel good, it makes me feel really good, and that is a win-win.â
you smile at him and move closer to fit under his arm and into his side, your hand resting on his chest. he tightens his arm around you and whisper, âi love you.â
âi love you too,â you say through hooded eyes. your hand starts trailing lower, âmust have been really good for you seeing how painful this looks.â you softly say, gesturing to the aching bulge in his boxers, the dark patch stained by precum.
his breath hitches as you inch closer, âbaby, no itâs okay. you donât have to do thââ the sentence gets cut off when your hand gives him a tentative squeeze.
âi donât have to, but i want to. i should thank you somehow for making me feel so good,â your voice dropping an octave in lust, âwill you let me show my thanks, honey?â
you stare at him with the sultriest doe eyes heâs ever seen, and heâs thoroughly convinced in that moment that you are, in fact, trying to kill him.
still a great way to go out, he thinks.

=> Pearl & Co: Gear up
You decide to scrape all the valuable rocks and minerals off this cave first. Added to your spoils from before it should be enough to properly equip you for the Nether.
Grian: Any word from Skizz yet?
Gem: He's saying he'll run right on back.
Gem: oh wait
Gem: Now he's saying Mumbo is against it.
Grian: Unbelievable. It's been less than ten minutes and the man's already whipped.
Scar: That means they won't need their death chest stashes, right?
Pearl: Scar, really? You would stoop down to grave robbing, sir?
Scar: No, no, of course not!
Scar: Just grave-borrowing.
Gem: I'd say we're ready as can be!
Pearl: I mean- we could maybe get some diamonds and-
Scar: Woooooo, let's go!!
Pearl: ...
Pearl: Wait!!
Pearl: if
Pearl: if this happens to go wrong and my soulmate is... not happy about it
Pearl: Would it be ok if we stayed together?
Pearl: You know, as a team?
Gem: Of course, Pearl! Why wouldn't we!
Gem: We started this together and we're sticking together no matter what!
Grian: You know, maybe you could stay up here?
Grian: We could use someone to dig us diamonds to enchant.
Gem: Exactly! And even if you don't find any, we'll let you get in on the enchanting. Right, Grian?
Grian: Weeeell
Gem: Right, Grian?
Grian: Alright, alright.
Gem: And Scar?
...
Gem: ...Scar?

i hope i've managed to make it clearer this time that the "armor visible" condition is applicable only when it's on the screen. i just don't want to cover 80% of the design with armor most of the time. Please assume that everyone is wearing whatever armor they've been seen in last
same goes for weapons and shields - it leaves both hands busy if i draw them all the time, so let's just pretend they stash both in their inventory when not directly in combat.
on an unrelated note - i'm going to be busy with work and family matters the next two weeks, so the frequency of updates might fall significantly. i hope for your patience U-U

SPYING YOUR FUTURE SELF

pile 1
"I've been through a lot of ups and downs, and I'll keep going through them, but I still have hope for a better future" I heard that from your future self, you're a blessed person but you also suffer so much! It's like there's karma (even though I don't believe it) that you're going through, somehow you suffer a lot, some have a very strong melancholy, it could even be depression here, that's something, but then I see you enjoying your own company, in peace and content and then starting to meet someone, but things are still cold, you need to go through one more thing, the universe doesn't want me to give too many spoilersâŠ
pile 2
Oh daddy! I'M SORRY BUT THAT WAS THE FIRST THING THAT CAME TO MY MIND I EVEN LAUGHED, LET'S LAUGH HAHAHAH
Wow! You're going to meet someone very interesting, wow, take what resonates, for many here for the majority it's a man, but if you're not interested, it's a person who has a very strong masculine energy, some can be gender fluid, and wow, wow estoy caliente aquĂ, I see that this man will be the kind of man that Lana del Rey sings about, she would fall in love if she saw him hehehe, they can be much older than you, very lively, you're going to have the key to each other's hearts, he's a man with all the qualities, I heard everything a lady looks for in a gentleman, I'm hot now, please, I'm not flirting with your future love, but wow, he's a very well-structured person, you're going to be supported by him simply because yes, he's a very lucky person and you're going to feel it, he can work a lot, he's really going to be older, I'm with back pain here, you're going to meet them when they are transitioning, like in their 30s or 40s, something important in their lives, it's like a snake shedding its skin, a man who knows what to say, well-spoken, can be a journalist, a smoker, and have hobbies, you can meet each other on a trip, sorry, it wasn't supposed to be a love reading, but your future self gave the key to your heart to this person so it's someone important that they want you to know. Don't argue with me, argue with your future self. call me for a three-way relationship JUST KIDDING JUST KIDDING I KNOW THERE ARE PEOPLE WHO CHOSE THIS PILE AND ARE JEALOUS I'M PROVOKING YOU but call me if you want hehehe
pile 3
Wow, so many changes hahaha pun, wow you're going to build something very important and profitable for you, you can move to another country, you can have your own business or you'll know exactly what you want professionally and how to achieve that success, there'll be a lot of envy around you because of that, you'll be successful and people should want to be inspired by you but no they'll want what's yours :(, I see marriage for you here too, a reciprocal relationship with love. and quite traditional the ceremony, with a very pretty wedding dress, very vintage.

First Win
Pairing: Lando Norris x Reader
Summary: in which Lando's first win helps the two of you finally get together
Warnings: swearing, my utter HAPPINESS AND AWE THAT LANDO WON, also not edited bc i wanted to post it as soon as possible
Word count: 1.1k
A/N: you guys dont UNDERSTAND how fucking happy i am im literally sobbing oh my GOD
You were pushing your way through the crowd, trying to find Lando, all the while your heart was fucking soaring. You were so proud of him, probably one of your closest friends, finally achieving this incredible success in his career. He deserved all of it and more, and you were so proud of him.
Getting P8 yourself, you werenât upset with your score, though you could have done better, but it seemed insignificant compared to Landoâs win and how excited you were for him. You knew you probably wouldnât get to talk to him until much later; he was the star of the day, a very busy man with hundreds of people demanding his attention, but you hoped for at least a look of him, maybe if you were lucky a smile, to show your utter joy of him winning.
The grid was packed, however, and even with your status as a driver it was still a challenge getting through the swarms of people. You pushed and shoved, mumbling apologies, almost desperate to see your friend before he went on the podium.
You and Lando were close. Even for co-workers you guys had a special relationship. You just clicked, able to understand each other without having to work for it. Even only actually knowing each other for a few years you felt youâd known him for a lifetime.
Sure, there may have been some⊠other feelings towards him that you harboured, but you refused to let them risk your friendship with Lando so you kept them hidden, shoved deep inside you and pretended to be ignored, even though in reality they seemed to have a chokehold on you.
You didnât know if Lando felt the same and honestly werenât sure if you wanted to know. You already had this incredible relationship with him, this understanding you shared with no one else, and you werenât willing to risk it for anything, even to end the aching longing you felt sometimes when looking at him.
You finally managed to push your way through the crowd, now at the edge of a couple fences blocking the part of the grid where only certain F1 employees were able to be. Usually you wouldnât have been able to go, what with you receiving an eighth position and not a podium, but you were determined to see Lando closer, maybe even give him a quick hug.
You were just so fucking proud of him, and you didnât know what to do with the overwhelming feeling. Heâd opened up to you multiple times in the past, confessing his feelings of failure, of being unable to get a win and how much that affected him, how shameful he was because of it. You knew how much his lack of wins haunted him and his career, so to gain a win, to achieve something like this, it was truly amazing, and your pride for him was overflowing.Â
You managed to wheedle your way through the fences, using your driver status and known close friendship with Lando to your advantage, slipping through and immediately looking around for the Miami Grand Prix winner.
You followed the sound of cheering, rounding a corner to find the massive group of Mclaren employees behind a small fence, with Lando on top of them crowd surfing, laughing and looking like the happiest man alive.
Today he was exactly that.
You stood to the side, grinning like a maniac seeing Lando so happy. Your heart was near bursting, you couldnât stop smiling even if you wanted to. You stayed silent though, not wanting to drag attention to yourself and get kicked out, but seeing him so fucking happy was more than enough for you.
So when Lando distractedly glanced around, a joyous smile on his face, and saw you, his smile widening, your heart warmed. You told yourself it was nothing big, but when he left his team to walk over to you, jog over, actually, your smile turned even bigger.
âCongratulations,â you exclaimed before leaping into his arms, wrapping your own tightly around his neck. His own hands came up to hug you back, holding you tightly against him. âIâm so fucking proud of you Lando.â
Lando squeezed you tighter, still not letting go. You were more than content to stay in his arms, pressing your head into the crook of his neck, ignoring the flashing cameras that would be following Lando for the rest of the day.
When the two of you eventually pulled back, however reluctantly, Lando was beaming. He looked gorgeous like that, genuinely happy, nothing able to bring down his mood. He was riding the high of winning, still heavily influenced by the adrenaline pumping through his veins.
Maybe what was why he kissed you, in front of millions of people, taking them and you by surprise. Or maybe it was because he was having the perfect fucking day, and having you in his arms would have made it all the more better.
Either way you were certainly taken off guard as Lando stared at you for a split-second, eyes tracing your face before they landed on your lips, and then the next second he was leaning in and pressing his lips against yours.
There was an onslaught of noise as he did it, the cameras going crazy, people yelling and cheering, yet it was all distant. All you could focus on was Landoâs soft lips against yours, dragging his mouth across your own.
You kissed him back without thinking, your hands snaking back around his neck. His hand gripped your waist, tugging you closer as he deepened the kiss, his tongue flicking your lower lip and forcing you to swallow a moan lest you want the whole world to hear it.
Lando had the gall to grin against your lips, no doubt hearing your gasp before you could muffle it completely. You pulled back, giving him a âwhat the fuck manâ stare and he just shrugged, keeping his hand firmly around your waist.
You shook your head but your emotions were in overdrive, everything inside you screaming for more. You pressed your head into the crook of his neck again, hearing his soft chuckle as his hands roamed your back.
âWe are having a very serious talk after this,â you whispered in his ear.
He paused, before whispering back, âgood or bad?â
You pulled back to stare at Lando, his curls sticking to his forehead from sweat, his eyes alight with an excitement you hadnât seen in a while, his face slightly red from exertion and happiness.
You smiled at him. âDefinitely good.â
Lando grinned and pulled you back for another kiss, blatantly ignoring the paparazzi around you. He murmured into your lips, âIâm so fucking lucky.â
You couldnât help but ask, âhow so?â
He grinned against your lips again. âWinning the race and the girl in one day.â

Seeing you standing in his kitchen donned in that pastel-colored blouse makes Jungkook stop in his tracks; youâre exactly who he needs to wake him up.Â
Itâs been weeks of vacation, which also means weeks without his usual routine. Itâs striking how being absorbed in his work has altered him in that sense - he looks for the stress, for the long hours, for the isolation thatâs demanded of his job. Perhaps there was just really nothing to look forward to, and work was an excuse for all those things because there wasnât much else going for him. Ironic, considering everything he can do with what he has, yet nothing seems to be what heâs looking for, even if deep down, he knows what it is.
This is something that Hoseok and A-yeong made him realize during the trip as he watched them gush about the pretty streets and marvel at the fjords and immerse themselves in the view of the northern lights.Â
His cousin, the President of the company who makes decisive decisions and conducts press conferences and signs off on billion won projects, is the same man who squealed during a husky ride in Finland, laughed his butt off when he slipped on a glacier, and muttered words of love to his wife as they all watched the bright evening sky over the lake in Norway. There was so much passion in him, something A-yeong mirrored, whether it was about work or his relationships or just about everything in life. Hoseok looked forward to that trip, to that time with his wife, to that break, to seeing the scenery and feeling peace.Â
While Jungkook found himself constantly thinking about the Arts Center and upcoming projects and new design ideas⊠and the one person who connected him to all those - you. It felt like he was rushing towards something because the achievement was the goal, and while he stopped by the mountains and marveled at the water as he sat on the cliffs, his mind was racing, chasing something that he couldnât even grasp.Â
Thatâs how the past six years have been. Perhaps more, he thinks. Maybe 20. Heâs never allowed himself to just be. Quite frankly, he doesnât know who he is outside of what he does; he doesnât know much of how he is outside of being an executive and heir, and so during the moments when he isnât functioning as such, heâs a bit lost, just existing in a place heâs visiting, not knowing how to interact, how to breathe; not knowing how to connect or to be free.
Youâre the bright spot amidst it all. With you around, he still seems to be wandering while stuck in a certain spot, but heâs not alone because youâre there. With you around, thereâs a sense of calmness somehow, with your smile and your presence warming the coldest parts of him that heâs left untouched and unfeeling for years.
So when he walks towards you, his eyes fully opening now to see you better, he hums in satisfaction.Â
âItâs nice to see you again,â he says, prompting you to turn around. âIt feels like itâs been so long.â
âReally, Mr. Jeon? I thought the three weeks felt fast,â you giggle. âBut itâs nice to see you, too. Were you able to rest out there?â
âSomehow,â he replies, taking the glass of water you give him.
âIs that why you passed on your morning workout to sleep in?â You raise an eyebrow, thinking that heâd slept in when you walked into his penthouse earlier without the usual sounds from the gym that youâd gotten used to.
âI was pretty jet lagged,â he groans. âCouldnât sleep so I did it last night to tire myself out and then I finally fell asleep three hours ago. Itâs a miracle I woke up after the tenth snooze of my alarm.â
âOoh, that is not good, considering all the documents on your desks and messages on your inbox,â you shake your head. âWhat if I move the team meeting to tomorrow so you donât push yourself too hard today? You couldâve taken the day off.â
âAnd have a worse day tomorrow? No thanks,â he chuckles. âIâm fine, but I agree with moving the meeting.â
âJust take it slow,â you advise. âI brought some pastries because I know your fridge and pantry are empty. Iâll get them ready shortly.â
âIâll wash up then.â
You follow not long after, preparing his outfits for the second half of the week, then setting out the breakfast for both of you. He returns to the kitchen wearing the brown suit you chose for today, looking just as handsome as you remember. You fix his tie like you always do and meet his eyes like itâs reflex, the warmth bubbling within you when he returns your soft smile. You take your seat a chair away, taking your iPad after to start going through updates when he stops you.
âNot yet, please. My mindâs still half asleep.â
âOkay, sir,â you respond. âWe can talk about your trip instead. How was it?â
Jungkook finds himself more engaged in telling you about it, not like how he was when his best friends met him for dinner last night and he was too tired to narrate how it went. But you ask with such excitement that he ends up sharing more than what he planned.
He talks about the Vikings museum and historical tours, the bike rides and coastal walks, the calm but lively cities and the breathtaking waterfalls. He even mentions the things heâd only kept to himself - like that one evening when the sky looked like one of Lee Jaeminâs paintings that had him staying at the balcony with a glass of wine while basking in its beauty, and when they were in Hans Christian Andersenâs hometown and he wondered what kind of fairytale character he would be, and that he learned he really enjoys hot springs during the winter. Theyâre random thoughts that he just ended up saying, somehow feeling natural and comfortable in sharing them with you.Â
You indulge him, asking more and sharing your thoughts, too. You even throw in the occasional teasing remark and playful laughter. You ask about the scenery, expressing your yearning for the outdoors that you said you never really appreciated before, as the open space always overwhelmed you.
He passes you his iPad where heâs opened the folder of the photos that he took with his camera, a gift from Taehyung whoâd said that Jungkook needed to go out more and âfeel the sun.â He rarely used it but a Northern Europe trip seemed like the perfect excuse. Heâs used to assessing interiors and marveling at structures from afar, but this time he got to appreciate what lies beyond his walls, beyond the little world heâs been burrowing himself in.
âThese are stunning, Jungkook,â you gush, dropping the formalities as he shares something that feels so personal. âI didnât know you had the talent for photography, too.â
âI wouldnât call it a talent,â he shakes his head. âI took it as an elective during university and it helps with design ideas. I should at least take nice photos if I need inspiration or a basis. I donât really do it much, though.âÂ
âDid it make you feel good, at least?â You ask, wondering what else gives him satisfaction.
âSomehow. It makes me feel good when Iâm looking at the pictures. Iâm transported to that day and that place again, like a holder of memories and desire for the good things.â
You go through the photos - dozens of them. He didnât take too many, just one or two shots of every scenery. Beyond the majestic landscape, there are the everyday scenes - people talking at a cafe, strangers enjoying the park. Thereâs a couple holding hands, laughing at each other; from the silhouettes, you can tell theyâre Hoseok and A-yeong, a moment that Jungkook probably thought too precious to not capture.Â
Something in you stirs, as the photos elicit a mix of awe and yearning. You look at Jungkook and you think itâs what he felt, too.Â
Thereâs a saying you heard about watching what people photograph to learn what they fear losing. With Jungkook, it seems as if these - freedom, tranquility, connection, intimacy - are things he wants; somehow they seem to be what he fears having.Â
âItâs nice to have a keeper of good memories, isnât it? Of that reminder that beautiful things exist and that theyâre tangible, you know?â You say, returning his gadget.Â
âIt is,â he responds after a beat of silence, seemingly processing your words. âWe forget sometimes. Or maybe, we just donât know what thatâs like. In that case itâs like an illusion. But itâs still good to have that, I guess. Itâs still something.â
You donât know what more could be said. It feels too personal or even intimate of a conversation to have with your boss on a Wednesday morning as you eat breakfast in his apartment. So you let it go, smiling as you say youâre glad he got to have some rest.Â
He says that so does he and then asks about how your holiday was as you both head to the car. You talk about it during the ride, how you spent a week in Wando with your motherâs partnerâs family and then drove to Jeonju, how the entirety of your break had you stuffing your face with food and bonding with them, and how they drove you back to Seoul last weekend, thankful that for those two weeks, they had you around.
You donât tell Jungkook that some days, youâd think of him, wondering how heâs doing. You donât tell him that youâd seen A-yeongâs posts and that he looked at peace in them, that there was a softness in his eyes that youâve rarely seen on him. You donât tell him that despite the vacation that you said you were looking forward to, you were also looking forward to this - having him back, sharing stories, and living in the silence alongside him.
You wonder, as you glance at him looking out the window, if this is what you meant about savoring the moment, enjoying whatâs in front of you, and feeling less alone. Because right now, those are exactly what you feel.Â
Jungkook wanted to wait to get to the office before proceeding to work matters, something that surprises you because he always gets down to business immediately, not unless heâs recovering from a hangover. But he blew you off even in the car, wanting instead to listen to your stories and then doodle on his leather notebook again for the rest of the ride. You end up meeting with him for an hour before he settles in, then he goes to lunch with his father, meets with your team, and then decides to visit the Arts Center mid-afternoon.Â
Work is back in full-swing just like that, and you pull the energy from within you to manage the crazy week. There are start-of-the-year events to attend and organize, a board report and meeting to prepare for, new projects to initiate, and a major one to monitor.Â
Youâre glad that despite all that, Jungkook allows you to have a four-day off on the succeeding week so you can celebrate your birthday with a road trip down coastal towns with Jimin and Soomin. Itâs a silly thing to do in the middle of winter, but they insist that warmth is most satisfying when itâs cold outside, and you donât disagree. Youâll definitely be sighing in relief when you hold the steaming hot hotteok in between your hands, and itâll be the best one youâll have.Â
Itâs Thursday and youâll be back in a week. Youâve just finished briefing Do-hyun, whoâll be covering for you while youâre away, and you get off your chair to grab tea in the pantry. Jungkookâs voice stops as you, as he stands by his door and asks if youâre already leaving.
âIn an hour, Mr. Jeon,â you reply. âIs there anything I can help you with until then?â
âNo, nothing,â he says. âIâm actually about to leave for dinner with Taehyung and Seokjin.â
âOh, alright, sir,â you hum. âGoodbye, then. And Iâll see you next week. Just know that youâre the only one who can disturb me.â
He laughs in response. âCome on, I wonât be badgering you, especially on your birthday. Itâs your one week away from me. You have to savor it.â
âSo should you,â you counter. âBut okay. I will.â
âGood,â he nods. âIâll just fix up and go ahead then.â
He returns to his room and youâre just the tiniest bit disappointed that he didnât properly greet you but you suppose thatâs good for you. So you go to the pantry and end up chit-chatting with the team, finding yourself smiling when you look up and see Jungkook by the door, who tells everyone not to stay too late before he heads out.Â
You arrive back at your desk, your heart beating fast at the sight of a small brown bag on your table.Â
For your trip. Something to help remind you that beautiful things exist and theyâre tangible, the note reads. Happy birthday.Â
Your mind goes to a conversation you had not long ago, about how photos can elicit certain emotions and be a keeper of memories, especially of good ones. You know this is from Jungkook, and you also have an idea of what this might be, which is why you open the package right away.
Still, it catches you by surprise, especially when you find two disposable film cameras inside. Theyâll definitely be enough for your upcoming trip and you know the photos will come out amazingly. Youâre ecstatic.Â
Perhaps this is why he wanted to leave before you did - youâd thank him and heâd be terrible at accepting it again, then youâll call him out for it. Maybe it was good he hadnât stuck around to see you act this way. At least he didnât see you with that silly smile on your face.
But Yoongi does as you head down the elevator, smirking at you when he sees the bag youâre holding and the familiar handwriting on the card.
âIâm guessing youâre not fighting it anymore, huh?â He says, teasing yet somehow still comforting.Â
âIâm trying not to, even if I know Iâm being stupid,â you admit. âI can at least have these fleeting moments of joy after I walk away from this.â
âRetain the good memories. Thatâs one way to let things go,â Yoongi advises, as he exits the carriage on the parking lot floor.
The doors close on your smiling face, and he chuckles to himself at the irony of things. Thatâs how he learned to let you go, after all.
You return to work the following week with a spring in your step, with Jungkook noticing as you heat up the fried rice that you told him youâd be preparing for breakfast. You hum as you go about in the kitchen, feeling energized after the last few days youâve had.Â
It was freezing, but you, Soomin, and Jimin went a little crazy and ran down the beach whenever you drove by one, something you all did as kids living in Busan. The drives from town to town were slow but they had you all singing to your favorite songs, munching on chestnuts and bungeoppang, and stopping over viewing sites for fresh air and photos.Â
You used Jungkookâs gift a lot, taking pictures of things that elicited strong emotions and good memories - purple and orange skies, snow melting on the pavement, the crashing ocean waves turning white at the tip, an empty playground in the park, Soominâs infectious laughter, Jiminâs angelic smile.Â
The cold was an excuse to seek your best friendsâ warmth and they took advantage of it. It reminded you of those few years growing up with them before you returned to Daegu for college, something you and Jimin reminisced about, and something that you thanked him for after what seemed like ages. You recalled how he approached you first as the new girl who entered school in the middle of the school year, how he followed you around because you were always alone and was scared of loud noises, and how heâs never left your side since then.Â
Every night during that trip, he hugged you as you tried to fall asleep, knowing you needed it for the cold you felt inside and out. He was next to you when you talked about Jungkook gifting you the cameras and admitted that it made you feel good, that it made you happy.
âIâm glad heâs showing you kindness,â Jimin had said. âBut⊠just be careful, okay? Your heart is capable of a lot of good things. Pain is the last thing it deserves.â
âI donât really know what my heart is capable of,â you replied. âMy brain does the hurting but my heart⊠I donât know what it does. I donât know how it works.âÂ
It left him speechless then and somehow, you were glad that he just held you tighter, only because it was the only way you wanted to be comforted at that moment. But you also knew that whatever your heart ended up doing or experiencing, Jimin and Soomin would be there to help you make sense of it, to pick up the pieces should they need to.
âIt seems as though your birthday rejuvenated you, ___,â Jungkook disrupts your thoughts. âYou look much lighter and relaxed.â
âOnly because I havenât checked my emails nor taken new instructions from you,â you laugh as you serve the fried rice in bowls then head towards him. You fix his suit again and speak casually like youâve gotten used to. âOnce I open that iPad and see what I have to deal with, relaxed would be the last thing Iâll be.â
âFair enough,â he chuckles. âLet me savor this then.â
His words catch you off guard and they prompt you to meet his eyes - soft yet piercing, then he turns shy and turns away from you. Perhaps heâs surprised at what heâd said, too.
âWork is stressful and your calmness rubs off on me most times,â he says nonchalantly. âWeâve got a busy few days ahead and I want that calmness to linger.â
âIt will,â you assure him. âAnd yes, I feel rejuvenated, and thatâll probably last me for days so that will linger, even if Iâm stressed, so don't worry. Youâre gonna do well. I donât doubt it one bit.â
Jungkookâs meeting the Culture Minister next week to present the Arts Centerâs plans and activities leading to its opening to the public, which is why you think he needs that calmness as well. The team has been helping him with the preparations and while you felt bad that you didnât get to contribute as much, he assured you that all the notes you left him have been instrumental.Â
But still, his words affect you. Is this calm and relaxed version of you all he wants to savor? Does it mean anything more?Â
The thoughts wander away as you have breakfast with him, and he asks if you wish to talk about work later on but you insist that youâre mentally ready for it all. Heâs the one who gives you updates this time, and just like that, youâre back to your usual routine.
You glance at his plate, all clean right after because even this dish, he savors. And you realize that doing things for him, no matter how simple, makes you happy, too, especially when his lips turn up in a small smile and he nods in satisfaction.
âGood, huh?â You wiggle your eyebrows.Â
âItâs infinitely better than mine,â he hums.
âSo, itâs really, really, really good then?â
âYou donât even know how mine tastes like.â
âTrue. But Taehyung said once that yours was really delicious and Iâll take his word for it. Seokjin agreed and I believe them.â
âWow, really? Thatâs a rare moment where they praise me,â Jungkook laughs.Â
âYou should savor that, too.â
âI should. Heavens know the last time that happened. And when itâll happen again.â
âThatâs kind of hard though, isnât it?â You say, being a bit reflective as you go back to your daily routine after a trip that you wholly enjoyed. âSavoring things⊠capturing them, appreciating them. Like, you have to be in the moment, you have to be present, and thatâs not easy to do.â
âIt isnât,â he responds after a while. âYou have to care enough for something to be worth savoring, I guess.â
âExactly. But how do you do that when everything is temporary - things, feelings⊠people. Not all of them are meant to stay,â you reply, meeting his eyes as they seem to be in deep thought.
âMaybe they will⊠if you ask them to,â he softly says.
âThat depends.â
âOn what?â He asks.
âIf they have a reason to,â you shrug.Â
Your faraway eyes tell him that youâre in deep thought, perhaps processing the exchange that even Jungkook canât fully wrap his head around. But you turn to him not long after, smiling as you take the plates to clean up, as if youâd just snapped out of a trance, of a moment of honesty.Â
He watches you from his seat. Thereâs an aura about you that truly feels more relaxed, yet there seems to be an added layer of pensiveness, of deep thinking that could easily be mistaken for savoring the moment when you might be questioning it, perhaps wondering if itâs real⊠or worth caring about in the first place.
Even until now, he doesnât know what it is about you that has him hanging on to every word you say, like itâs some secret message or code to learning who you are and what your fears and pains and hopes and dreams might be.Â
In the past months, his moments with you have allowed him a peek inside - thereâs this yearning for something that youâre not ready for; thereâs this knowledge of the fleeting nature of the world that you want to capture as memories because thatâs the only way you can make them stay; thereâs this desire for companionship that terrifies you more than anything. Â
But then again, as he sees that soft courage in your eyes, maybe he knows why - he has the same fears as you, and perhaps thatâs terrifying, too, as he realizes that much of what heâs scared of is tangible.Â
He fears the emptiness left in your absence and the silence surrounding him when youâre gone. His trip over the holidays made him think so; this past week when you were away solidified it. Thereâs a lot of you to miss. Heâs unsure how to deal with these thoughts and feelings; he doesnât know how to move forward and be professional when you affect him this way. All he can hope for is that youâll always find a reason to stay close to him, that youâll always find a reason to want him around, and that every moment you share is something worth it enough for you to savor but that you both never have to let go.
You think about the conversation with Jungkook later that night on your way home. Thereâs something about the impermanence of the world thatâs always scared you; things break and wither away all the time and you fear the loss in their absence. Perhaps itâs because youâve experienced various types of losses throughout your years of living.Â
You lost that childhood innocence the first time you saw your mother cry, then when her smile that finally returned was wiped off, and then when her hopeful eyes became filled with tears out of fear. You lost that comfort of a routine when you left Seoul at 10 years old, and then that stability when you said goodbye to your life in Busan. You lost that security when you decided to come back here with a dream tucked away, burdened with a debt and a past that you couldnât escape. You lost that feeling of freedom when your favorite library closed, and then of safety during that night at the restaurant when you were hurt and exposed.Â
Itâs hard to savor things when you know youâll lose them one day. But thatâs also precisely why you should, as what these past months have been showing you, you think now. The absence reminds you that something good was in its place, and that at one point in time, it made you hope that you deserved it, that you were worthy of having it.Â
But as you lay in bed that night and think of how much of Jungkook you thought about while you were away, you start to think that maybe things arenât as temporary as you once believed. He was in the icy streets that you walked on and the warmth of the hot chocolate drink you had. He was in the drizzle on the playground that you wiped off and the touch of the leather notebook you saw at one of the shops.Â
And perhaps that was the difference - you didnât just stand by; somehow it felt like you connected with them - they were tangible, within your grasp, and that made them linger, that made them feel real. In your mind, thatâs where they stayed.
The tail-end of winter marks the time when youâve settled in the new year. All your backlog from the holidays and your short birthday break have been worked on. Operational plans and goals for the year have been finalized. The Board report and meeting are over and major events have been scheduled. Things are picking up now as the Arts Center is near its completion, with the consequent promotions and marketing on full speed. That last bit has been contracted to a subsidiary company but Jungkook is still on top of most things, which means that so are you.Â
You accompany him to meetings with different departments regularly, and thatâs on top of monitoring the other small projects that the VP office is working on, which is also on top of supporting Jungkookâs executive functions. In a blink of an eye, youâre back to the hustle and bustle nature of your job, and youâre reminded of why itâs been so hard to get out of it, and also why you canât wait to do so.Â
Thereâs just so much going on all at once, and given how you are, you give all of yourself to it because itâs the only way to get things done; itâs the only way to get through it without feeling like youâre taking for granted all that youâve been given and achieved. But it also means youâve lost the sense of meaning of most other things, and you wanna be able to do something that means something to you, something of good memories, of beautiful things that are tangible that you can touch and feel.Â
You let go of the thoughts when Do-hyun and Yohan pop in your area to say goodbye. Itâs another long night for everyone and youâre glad that they finally listened to you and decided to go home. You say that you still have a couple of things to work on when they insist that they walk you to the bus stop, telling them once more that youâll be fine.Â
âItâs forecasted to rain soon,â Do-hyun informs you.Â
âIâll get a cab, donât worry,â you assure them. âFinance needs these files first thing tomorrow morning and weâve got that ocular at 8. Thank you though.âÂ
âFine, but let us know when youâre home, okay?â She says.
âI will. Get home safely, you two.â
You get back to work, and with the peace and quiet in the office with you being the last one here, you manage to finish what you need to in an hour and then finally call it a night. You head out and sigh to yourself once you see the lightning strike, knowing that it wouldnât be long before the rain will begin to pour. You manage to bring out your umbrella by the time it does, then turn at the corner to look for a cab so you can avoid those whoâll be hailing from the main road.Â
There are a few people who have the same idea as you, and itâs after some time before you spot one, with the driver slowing down once he sees you. But right as you start speed walking towards it, some man decides to get ahead, running past you and bumping you in the process, causing you to lose your balance. The wet pavement doesnât help, as you slip on your foot and fall to the ground. You try to get up but jerk in pain when you do, realizing that youâd hurt your ankle, a foreign feeling that has you immediately worrying.Â
After all the times youâd found yourself under the rain, this is the worst moment of all - youâre hurting, all alone, and completely worn out. Youâve had a really long day and you donât have the energy for this; all you want is to go home and have some rest. But you know thereâs no other way, so you shift on your bum, manage to get up and strain your arms in the process, then you limp to the nearest post you can find using your umbrella as a walking stick then stand on one foot.
The rain has weakened a little, so youâre at least not getting even more wet, but itâs still winter and youâve started to freeze. There are no other cabs in sight and all ride-hailing apps have been such a pain to book. Knowing that itâll be tough to get home in any way at this stage and that you wonât be able to manage on your own, you decide to call Mr. Ri. Heâs always told you that if you need help for anything, heâs another person that you could call.
Itâs half past 8 in the evening. Youâre banking on him being on the way home after having dropped Jungkook off at his building after a dinner meeting at 5:30.
âHey, ___. Is everything alright?â Mr. Ri asks, knowing you rarely call at this hour.Â
âNot really,â you sigh, the shiver in your voice evident. âHave you dropped Jungkook off?â
âNot yet. But what do you mean, not really? What happened?â
âAre you driving?â
âNo. Iâm still waiting for him to finish. Tell me, are you in danger?â He presses, and you hear the worry in his voice.Â
You told him about Chi-won some weeks after it happened, and Mr. Ri, having known you for many years, knows youâre not one to usually reach out. Heâs made it a point to check on you regularly, and calls like this would definitely ring some alarm bells.Â
âIâm not in danger but I hurt myself,â you say, quickly appeasing him that itâs probably just a sprained ankle and not that serious. âI just canât get any ride and I can barely walk. I was hoping you were on the way home.â
âIâm not but Iâll go get you, okay? Iâll tell Jungkook and weâll drive to you right away.â
âMr. Ri, heâs in a meeting!âÂ
âThatâs most likely over and now theyâre just chatting over drinks,â he reasons. âIâll get him. You know heâll want me to.â
âYou donât know that,â you stammer.
âYou werenât there with him the days after what happened that night at the restaurant, ___,â he huffs. âI just knew it was really bad because of how worried he was, and heâs never been that way. So yes, I know heâll want me to get his ass out of there and be on the way to you. Plus, Iâm sure heâll fire me if I donât.â
âFine,â you concede. âJust donât make it sound so bad because it really isnât.â
âYou know I canât control how that kid reacts,â he hums. âJust send me your location.â
Mr. Ri heads out of the driverâs lounge and rushes to the restaurant where he manages to send a message to Jungkook that youâre stranded somewhere with possibly a sprained ankle. He says it as it is, knowing that Jungkook wonât need much to decide on ending the meeting and go to you, which he does right away.
âWhat happened?â He asks the older man as they both walk towards the basement parking.
âI donât know. I didnât ask any more questions,â Mr. Ri responds. âSheâs somewhere near the office. Weâll be there in 20 minutes.â
âTry for 15,â Jungkook instructs.
He calls you right after and he immediately picks up on your chattering teeth.
âHey, ___. How are you feeling?â
Youâre a little surprised when Jungkook calls this soon, and with how youâre trying to move past whatever attraction you have towards the man, this really isnât helping.
âJust⊠cold. My umbrella flew away,â you laugh. âThe windâs picked up and I think itâs gonna rain again.â
Just as you say so, it starts, and you pick up on the change in Jungkookâs voice. Youâve since learned that heâs not fond of it, always closing his eyes and trying to tune everything out with even just a drizzle. But he continues talking and asks what happened, trying to keep you company. You narrate the incident and attempt to play it off as something minor, although the longer you stay leaning against the post, the more pain youâre starting to feel.Â
âWeâre five minutes away. Weâll be there soon,â he assures you then drops the call.
Jungkook clenches his fist and closes his eyes as the rain continues to pour. With the sound of the thunder, he jerks in his seat like he always does, but he pushes forward, knowing you need his help. He takes deep breaths just as heâs learned to do, and not long after, Mr. Ri informs him that he sees you just meters away.
The car slows down and Jungkook looks outside the window. He can see you leaning against a pole on one foot, drenched and shivering, your eyes closed as you wait for them to arrive. He meets Mr. Riâs eyes in the rear view mirror as they halt, and with the rain just barely stopping, the older man nods and exits the car.
Jungkook watches from inside as Mr. Ri runs to you. He sees the smile on your face despite the droplets on the window. The older man takes your bag then helps you walk, leading you to the car where Jungkook manages to push the door open.Â
You slowly enter with as much energy you can muster, wincing in pain when you have to adjust your foot inside. You sigh in relief as you feel the warmth and dryness of the car, prompting you to apologize for getting it all wet.
âDonât worry about it,â Jungkook shakes his head. âWeâll take you to the hospital, okay? And I wonât accept no for an answer.â
You nod in agreement, knowing that much as youâre causing him inconvenience right now, youâre too tired to argue. You lean your head by the window and try to catch your breath.Â
âHave you had dinner? He asks.
âNot yet. I was supposed to grab it on the way home.â
âWeâll pass by somewhere after the hospital.â
âOkay,â you look at him and smile.Â
Jungkook isnât surprised when you donât counter him. Perhaps itâs the exhaustion, as he sees it in how your smile isnât as bright as what heâs used to, with it fading as you turn away. Youâre still shivering though, despite the car heater being turned up. He doesnât have a towel to dry you up, though, so he instead removes his coat and instructs you to lean forward so he can place it over your shoulders to warm your back. He takes his puffer jacket from the front seat and puts it over your lap right after, giving you warmth there, too.Â
âIs that better?â He asks.
âYeah,â you mouth. âThank you.â
His scent wafts through your senses, allowing you to breathe and feel all of him at once. Itâs the closest thing to tangible comfort youâve gotten from him, and you hate how good it feels.
Youâre just about to fall asleep when the car comes to a stop. The rain has subsided and perhaps thatâs why soon after, you hear Jungkook open his door and then your door, too. He removes his coat over your back, placing it back inside, then he holds onto your forearms to help you climb out. He takes his jacket and instructs you to wear it, giggling at how youâre being swallowed in it.
âI look ridiculous,â you pout as you sit on the wheelchair that heâs asked the nurse to get.
âJust a little,â he teases.
He walks next to you as youâre wheeled inside the hospital, staying close by when you explain to the ER doctor what happened. She assesses your foot and lower leg, diagnosing you with a sprained ankle like you expected, and proceeds to wrap it in elastic bandage.Â
She treats the minor scratches on your palms you got from the fall then writes you a prescription for painkillers. Jungkook takes it so he can buy them for you after, then he helps you settle the bill with your insurance.Â
Youâre quite uncomfortable - youâre still a little wet and the bandage feels foreign around your foot. But youâre also feeling a bit shy, now that Jungkook is the one pushing the wheelchair towards the pharmacy nearby. He parks you at the side while he buys the medicine, and as you look on, you canât help the relief mixed with giddiness that you feel despite the pain thatâs close to overtaking you.
He stands by the counter with his white dress shirt slightly untucked and the sleeves rolled up to his elbows. His hands are in his pockets while he waits for the pharmacist to return, and amidst everything thatâs going on, youâre still able to admire how overwhelmingly handsome he looks, especially given what heâs doing right now for you. His side view is quite blinding, so youâre slightly embarrassed when he turns around and calls your name again after you missed it the first few times.
âDazed and tired?â He asks as he walks back to you with a pack of medicines.
âDefinitely,â you say, which isnât a lie; itâs just not the whole truth. âI just want to eat and have a nice bath and then sleep.â
âAnd youâll do all that soon,â he assures you. âWeâll pass by whateverâs open on the way to your place. Just make sure you donât have the hot water on, okay? And then elevate your foot when you sleep.â
âYes, I heard everything she said,â you playfully roll your eyes.Â
âIncluding the full-on rest thatâs required of you for the next few days?â He raises an eyebrow. âBecause thatâs what youâre gonna have. Youâre on leave until youâre able to walk properly again, Ms. Cho.â
âSo now youâre being formal,â you tease, flashing him a playful smile. âBut yes, Mr. Jeon. The instructions are understood.â
âGood,â he laughs softly. âGlad youâre not being stubborn about it.â
âOh, not with this one, not when Iâm this tired and in this much pain.â
His look turns sullen at the admission of what youâre feeling and you wish he didnât feel this bad. But you canât deny the way itâs giving you butterflies, prompting you to scold yourself internally because learning how caring he is isnât exactly what you need to get over a crush. This is definitely the worst part about being injured, you decide.Â
You make it out of the hospital and he helps you again as you enter the car, sliding in next to you as he ensures that youâre warm.Â
You pass by a noodle house on the way, and he buys you some more food for the next day despite your insistence that he didnât have to. But youâre too tired to argue some more, and you doze off a little during the drive to your apartment, with your half-awake self mumbling your apology about taking up his time.
Jungkook playfully shakes his head. Knowing youâre probably shallow sleep-talking, he disregards your words. He just gets glimpses of you, comforted to know that youâre at least getting the most rest you can have, given your current state. The painkillers will kick in soon and thatâll help you sleep better, but right now, he wishes he could do more for you.Â
In the deepest crevices of his heart, he wants to hold your still shivering hands and maybe hug your trembling body. He wants to stay with you until youâre warm and comfortable in your bed, perhaps assure you in whatever way that youâre not alone, that thereâs help whenever you need it. He canât imagine how it wouldâve been like for you being under the rain, cold and hurt with no one around.Â
On second thought, he can, and thatâs the thing about it. Even if you get out of it with just a sprained ankle - considering how much worse it couldâve been - itâs still terrifying being alone and powerless, paralyzed on the spot and not knowing if anyone will show up. He wants nothing more than for you to get over that and be able to move past it because he knows how haunting it could be; he knows how restraining such memories are.
But he also knows that thereâs not much he could do - not with the unnamed feelings he canât express, and not with the line he still believes he shouldnât cross.
So he settles for glances and soft smiles at your fluttering eyes and slightly parted mouth. You look tired but peaceful; he thinks itâs quite endearing. It also feels intrusive so he looks away, out into the streets that heâs able to somehow see now. He thinks about the timing of it all - your late night and his dinner out, your injury and the bad weather. Heâs thankful that the rain subsided and that allowed him to help you as much as he was able to, and that he got to you in the first place.
You arrive at your apartment with you now fully awake, and Jungkook heads to your side right away. Pulling you out of the car requires more strength from him, and despite your terrible condition, the butterflies appear once more when he instructs you to hold onto him for support. You have to act unaffected when you feel his broad shoulders and taut arms, with your hands gingerly laying on them; you wonder if he feels anything, too, under the thin material of his dress shirt.Â
His left hand only grazes your waist but his hold tightens after you grant him permission, perhaps knowing that it would be harder for you if he holds you that loose, he asked you to put your weight on him after all. Despite your agreement, you still hold in your breath, a silly attempt at slowing down your quickening heartbeat. Heâs never been this close, and youâre unsure if you want him to be anywhere else.
You suspend your thoughts for the shortest of seconds until you both manage to get up the few steps to your door. Mr. Ri helps in unlocking it, and you settle on the dining chair that Jungkook pulls out for you after you both enter.
As you release a breath and watch him look around, itâs then you realize that your boss - the Jeon Corporation Vice President who lives in a penthouse in an exclusive district in Seoul - is in your tiny studio apartment thatâs literally just the size of his bedroom. Youâre not ashamed one bit but you are a little shy, so you jokingly welcome him to your âlittle mansion.â
âItâs nice,â he hums, looking around some more, which he doesnât need to move to do.Â
The small round dining table, the off-the-wall kitchen, and the three-seater couch are all in the open living space. Thereâs a half-wall that separates your sleeping area, with your double bed against it and the tiniest of balconies just off of it.Â
Youâre quite proud of what youâve made of the place, with the plants in the corners, some chic art pieces on the walls, and photos with your friends and family on stick-on frames resting on the shelves. Itâs cozy and comfortable for you, and you feel quite proud when Jungkookâs lips turn up when you respond that youâre happy here when he asks.
âItâs everything I need,â you hum. âAnd itâs in a safe part of town. My neighbors are older couples who are all kind.â
âThatâs good,â he says, turning to you. âWill they be much help to you while you recover?â
âIâll be okay,â you insist. âI have a crutch. Iâve got food to heat up, and my place is so small that I donât have to move around to get things done. I donât really need help, you know?â
He scrunches his eyebrows, seemingly unconvinced.Â
âWatch,â you say, your shallow confidence pushing you to grab the crutch next to you then using it to walk towards him so you could prove that youâre capable enough to look after yourself.Â
But your unfamiliarity with it leads you to mistime your step. Before you know it, youâre tripping on your foot and losing your balance, and as your life is about to flash before your eyes thinking that youâre gonna fall once again and make your injury worse, Jungkookâs reflex kicks in and he steps forward to catch you. You feel his grip on your waist gradually tighten as if to keep you steady, as if to make sure youâre alright. Heâs so close, you can feel his breath as he pants, the worried look on his face something youâre familiar with by now. But he stays there, inches away, and so do you.Â
Heâs bending, so he stays leveled with you. You can see his long eyelashes resting on his honeyed skin and the endearing curve of his nose. He looks so soft like this, comfortable even, with his big round eyes looking like the most innocent ones youâve ever seen.
The voice in your head suddenly becomes loud enough and you break his gaze, realizing then that youâre also clutching onto his shoulder for support. You give him a look of apology but he just laughs, something youâre thankful for because the last thing you want is for the tension to thicken.
âYouâre stubborn, arenât you? You think itâs that easy?â He shakes his head, his tone sounding like heâs both teasing and reprimanding you.
âIt seemed like it,â you shrug, allowing him to help you back on the seat, disregarding the slightest bit of giddiness you feel as he has one hand on your free arm while the other ghosts over your waist in case you fall again.
âItâs not. And I know this because Iâve used this before,â he says. âSo since youâll be by yourself, we have to make sure you can at least use the crutch without falling, okay?â
âFine,â you concede, listening to his instructions carefully then trying to do it on your own.Â
It takes some getting used to, but after a few tries, you manage to at least walk without tripping. You plan on just staying in bed or on the couch tomorrow anyway so youâre not that worried. Even if Jungkook still seems to be.
âIâm okay,â you insist. âIâm gonna survive. But you should head home. Itâs getting late and you have that ocular in the morning. Iâll just have to email Chin-sun about accompanying you andââ
âNone of that,â he interjects. âIâll be the one to tell her and I donât want you worrying about work tomorrow, okay? Youâre gonna take your medicine and just rest.â
âYouâre demanding, arenât you?â You raise an eyebrow.
âOnly when Iâm dealing with someone as stubborn as you,â he counters.Â
You just laugh at him answering back, enjoying your banter more than you should, then he says that heâll go ahead, for as long as youâre sure you can manage. It takes another five minutes until he makes it out the door. But before he disappears, you call his name, your heart skipping a beat when he turns around, as if heâs just hanging onto your every word.
âThank you,â you say. âI know it was a long day and it was raining but⊠you still came for me.â
âJust recover quickly, okay? Iâll check on you in the morning.â
You nod and he leaves. And just like that, youâre once again on your own - damp, injured, and extremely tired. Jungkookâs presence remains in your apartment though, and there he is again, making you smile and making you feel things you shouldnât.
You donât mind being alone. In fact, you enjoy it. But during the times when you donât want to be, he just happens to be there. And being the stubborn woman that you are, deep down, you like it that he is, that in your own little world with the walls up so high, heâs become a frequent visitor. Youâre just not sure if you want him to stay just yet.Â
You wake up the next morning feeling faint and sore, and itâs probably the painkillers having lost their effect. And thereâs a reason why, seeing that itâs close to midday when you finally get out of bed. You manage to stand and walk to the kitchen with no issues, and you take your medication and heat up the food that Jungkook bought for you last night. Itâs when youâre seated that he calls, bringing that smile to your otherwise uneventful day.
âHello?â
âHey, ___. How are you feeling?â He asks.
âJust fine. I took my medicines for the day and Iâm about to eat lunch,â you reply. âAnd you? How was the ocular?â
âIt was good. It has a lot of potential so Iâll run down the details with the teams and propose it. But speaking of sites, remember what I said about Hoseok and I thinking of a Scandinavian-inspired mid-rise in the mountains?â
âYeah, the one you came up with during your trip. Are you gonna push through with it soon?â
âPerhaps. Iâve gotten emails of proposed sites for some other projects but Iâve seen a few that could work with this idea,â he shares. âThereâs one in Gangwon thatâs near the town center so it would be practical for many. Thereâs evenâ ah, why am I saying this to you now? Youâre off the clock.â
âItâs okay,â you assure him. Jungkook doesnât always show this much excitement with the projects he has to manage so when he does, you encourage him. Itâs also an excuse to hear more of his voice. âMy mindâs not prepared for being home today anyway so Iâm a little disoriented. But thatâs good. I can look into the sites and we can do an ocular whenever you prefer.â
âAlright, thatâs something to schedule for next month. But uh, you sure youâre fine? Does your ankle still hurt? Did you get proper sleep?â
âWell, I slept like a baby,â you giggle. âAnd I at least remained in one position. It still hurts a bit but it should be okay in the next few days. Iâm just gonna have to replace the bandage tomorrow morning.â
âOkay. Just make sure to ice it and keep it elevated.â
âYes, boss,â you tease, earning you a groan. âBut uh, thank you for checking up on me. I know youâve got a busy day ahead.â
Heâs silent, and you suppose itâs him again not knowing how to respond to gratitude, so you follow it up by saying that youâll eat your meal now and reminding him of his meeting at 2PM.
âYou better not be checking your emails and my calendar right now,â he warns.
âIâm not. I just memorize your schedule,â you defend.
âOkay then, Iâll go ahead.â
Jungkook drops the call and sinking in his seat, he sighs in relief. He managed to get through that conversation without sounding extremely worried, which is what heâs been since last night. His busy day today actually includes constantly worrying about how youâre doing, but he supposes itâs too much to let you know. Sure itâs just a sprained ankle, but knowing how you tend to move about, anything can happen. You were all alone for some time last night, too, just waiting for a way to get home. And thatâs another thing he worries about - that fear latching onto you, that helplessness weighing you down.
He asks Mr. Ri if heâs heard from you, thinking that youâd probably be more honest with him, but the older man says you told him the same thing.
âDonât you believe her?â Mr. Ri wonders.
âI do, but sheâs quite stubborn though,â Jungkook laments.Â
âWell, Iâve known her for a while and she tends to just deal with things on her own,â Mr. Ri says.
âBut she shouldnât. Sheâs injured.â
âI think itâs natural for people whoâve been alone for many years to be that way,â the older man shrugs. âI mean, youâre the same.â
Jungkook doesnât disagree. And if youâre truly anything like him, then youâd just push through the pain and force it to stop hurting so you can go back to your normal busy life because doing so keeps you from thinking of how lonely it feels when youâre sick or hurt and thereâs no one around. Itâs how heâs always been, too, he admits to himself.
The thought disturbs him, which is why he messages you three more times during the day and then again the next morning, asking if he could drop by. Heâs expecting you to insist that youâre fine and he doesnât need to, so it surprises him when you say that he could.Â
Youâre pacing back and forth in your mind since youâre unable to physically do so, but the thought of Jungkook visiting you this Saturday morning is a lot for you to handle, even if you did say it was alright for him to come. The truth is, you wanted him to, only because selfishly, seeing someone be that worried about you gives you some form of comfort.
You called your family yesterday and told them about the injury, which they obviously panicked about. Your mom asked if you needed her to come to you but like always, you said she didnât need to. You told Yoongi about it, too, and he was worried as well, in the classic way that he often is; he had food delivered to you for dinner last night so you didnât have to think about it. You only told your best friends about it this morning and they were furious you waited so long to let them know; they were packing their stuff right as you were speaking to them two hours ago.Â
You know you have people to depend on and would be at your doorstep anytime you ask. These are the same people whoâve done that for years and you fully accept their care and attention; itâs become a part of you and your healing process. But when someone like Jungkook who, for whatever reason he has, shows you the same, it feels different; he goes out of his way to show it to you, and heâs not even someone who normally does it. Itâs a new kind of comfort, one that you find yourself seeking. So when he called earlier and asked if he could drop by, there was an internal sigh of relief.Â
Over half an hour later, your doorbell rings, and you limp your way towards the door to open it.Â
Other than being in suits, youâve only ever seen Jungkook in his gym clothes - half naked as well - and in night out wear. You realize that this is the first time youâre seeing him in a casual outfit, and with a jacket over a sweatshirt and a brown beanie, he looks different - thereâs that boyish charm that youâve never seen; he looks softer, kinder, still reserved but a lot more comfortable.
You let him in after your greetings, then you turn to him and smile.Â
âItâs really the suit, I know it now,â you tease. âItâs what makes you look intimidating.â
He looks at his attire then frowns at you. âSo how do I look now?â
âNot intimidating.â
âWow, what a surprise,â he playfully rolls his eyes. âWhereas youâŠâ He eyes you in gray leggings and a blush jumper, looking soft and comfortable and even more like the bright spot heâs realized you are, but heâd never tell you that. âYou look injured.â
âGee, what a surprise. I feel injured, too,â you laugh. âBut uhm, itâs nice of you to visit my humble mansion once again.â
âI just wanted to make sure youâre doing better,â he hums. âAnd bring some more food so you donât have to worry about it.â
You eye the beef brisket with rice and say that you know what youâll be having for lunch. He responds that he might just go back to the restaurant and meet his best friends there, too. You return to your seat on the couch, realizing thereâs not much room for him to sit on, but he gets to you first, standing in front of you and eyeing the elastic bandage on the table.
âArenât you due for a redress?â He asks.
âYes but uh, I canât actually reach my foot,â you say with an embarrassed smile. âIâm not really flexible so Iâll just wait until Soomin and Jimin arrive.â
âI can do it,â he offers, thinking that the bandage isnât serving its purpose if it remains loose. âI mean, Iâve dressed myself on my own before so Iâm familiar with it.â
Itâs probably the painkillers but something possesses you and you agree, your mind too out of it to take the words back. A part of you wishes you had, especially when your heart does a thing when he kneels on the floor and slowly takes your injured foot. You wiggle your toes in reflex, as if theyâre shy, too, and Jungkook laughs at your silly antics, especially when you admit that youâre a little ticklish.Â
But he softly looks at you right after and asks if heâs hurting you, and you shake your head, unable to say anything else and process that you really allowed this man - your boss and in-denial crush - to do this.Â
You sit there, charmed by the way he looks determined to get this done. He removes the old bandage and wipes your ankle before wrapping it with a new one. His hands are large and quite rough but heâs very gentle, making sure to not lift your foot too high and that the bandage isnât wrapped too tightly. Once heâs finished, he lays it on the table and looks up at you to ask if it feels okay.
âYes,â you shyly smile. âThank you. That was, uh, that was really nice of you.â
He nods and stands up to throw the trash in the bin, wanting to quickly hide his smile at how wholesome you looked in thanking him.Â
He proceeds to look around, taking more of your home in. Thereâs something very calming about it, and itâs more than just the plants that you have and the right amount of sunlight coming from the balcony door and kitchen window. Thereâs also something familiar, as he looks through your shelf of photos, seeing your mom and her partner for the first time. She looks a lot like you. She has a nice smile like yours, and she sees that same joy on her face as heâd seen on you, as she hugs you tightly in one of the pictures.Â
The familiarity is similar to when he first had a whiff of your scent - old rose like the one his mother used to wear, one he remembers as a child when he still clung to her. There are those memories that stick with him. Others he doesnât have anymore but thatâs good, he supposes. Seeing your shelf, he sees all the good and tangible things you hold dear.Â
âThe photo on the far right, the one with Soomin and Jimin. We took that during my birthday trip using your gift,â you tell him. âIt came out really nicely.â
âIt did. Did you finish the film? What else did you take photos of?â
âWe used it all up,â you smile. âAnd just a lot of the scenery and the three of us. We all divided them so we could have copies and just remember how fun that week was.â
âGood, thatâs what I hoped.â
Jungkook stands there, his jacket now off so his sleeves are rolled up to his elbows and his hands are in his pockets as he looks through your shelf. You wonder what heâs thinking, what heâs seeing, if any of this makes him curious. Itâs as if heâs taking in all the small parts of who you are that he can see displayed before him. He turns to you and your eyes meet again, and for a moment, it feels like youâre really seeing him and heâs really seeing you, like thereâs something only both of you share and understand and want and can give.
But the doorbell ringing disrupts it, with you wondering who it could be since your best friends wonât arrive until an hour from now. Jungkook walks to the door and opens it, surprised to see Yoongi whoâs just as surprised to see his friend in your apartment.
âHey, youâre back. And⊠here,â you smile, attempting to stand up but Yoongi tells you to stay put.Â
âI flew home last night and thought Iâd visit and get you some food, but it seems like Iâm second in line,â he says, his smug face causing you to glare at him.Â
âI just wanted to make sure she was okay,â Jungkook defends. âI wonât stay long.â
âOf course you do. And I wonât stay long either. I donât wanna disturb anything.âÂ
He smirks at his friend, prompting Jungkook to glare at him as well.Â
âYah, chill, you two. Iâm really just passing by,â Yoongi reiterates, making his way now to sit on the arm of your sofa. âJust wanted to check on ___ and make sure sheâs well-fed.â
âIâm injured, not starving, okay?â You groan. âBut thanks. What have you got there?â
âNoodles, custard buns, and some tarts. Wasnât sure what youâre into when youâre incapacitated,â Yoongi shrugs.Â
âIâm very much mobile,â you correct him. âJust⊠slow and limping.â
Jungkook pulls your dining chair and sits in front of you, and the three of you talk as if this isnât weird at all. Youâre all colleagues - you and Jungkook consider Yoongi as your friend, but you donât know if you should consider your boss as such, and you donât know if he considers you the same. Youâve definitely experienced a lot of things that could qualify what you have as friendship, but even then, thereâs something more about it, something a little more intimate, different, terrifying.
You brave through this dynamic and learn that Yoongi likes to tell Jungkook off a lot. Itâs the kind of bluntness you expect from Yoongiâs no-nonsense attitude but itâs refreshing to see him be more straightforward towards someone like Jungkook who youâre used to seeing as commanding and serious. Jungkook takes the hits, seemingly unbothered as they bicker, and itâs another side of him you enjoy seeing - the smiles and laughter are natural, and thereâs this comfort about him that you suddenly want more of.
The time passes quickly, with the doorbell ringing again signaling that your friends have arrived. Yoongi gets up first to open the door, greeting them who do the same. You manage to stand up with Jungkook telling you to be careful, and when it dawns on them who else is in your apartment, Jiminâs face turns sour and Soominâs goes from confused to amused.Â
Jungkook looks taken aback by the cold welcome, but he manages to introduce himself to them.
âOh, we know,â Jimin says dryly. âYouâre the one who gives her so much work that she had to do overtime again and thatâs why she got hurt.â
You feel the tension come like a strong wave and you try to lower the level a little bit.Â
âHe also brought me to the hospital and got me some food,â you tell Jimin, whose bitterness isnât unfounded. He did listen to you complain about this very man all those months ago. âHeâs just checking up on me, making sure Iâm alright, the way you guys are.â
âAs we should,â Jimin huffs. âAt least we donât cause you any injury or pain.â
âYou donât. But you do make things better so could you do that, please?â You say, opening your arms for a hug, something to appease him before it gets even more tense.Â
Jimin has the sweetest smile but wouldnât be afraid to burn anyone down with his looks if they deserve it. Jungkook did at one point, but you obviously feel very differently about that now. But still, you glance at the man, hoping this encounter isnât putting him off too much, and with the slight tinge of guilt in his eyes, you suppose it hasnât.
Jungkook turns away, partly because a reminder of how heâd treated you before makes him regret even more how you both started, and partly because seeing you affectionate with any man - even if itâs your best friend - makes him a tiny bit jealous, only because itâs something he canât be with you. Seeing you that way with Hajoon months ago was different; Jungkook had been more shocked than anything. But this time, given that his attraction towards you seems to grow every second, and that heâs been wanting nothing more than to comfort you, thereâs more of that feeling of loss, of hope that it could be him one day, even if thatâs something thatâll probably never happen.
âI know you dislike him but tone it down for now, okay?â You whisper to Jimin. âMy place is too small to contain all this tension.â
âI know, Iâm sorry. Seeing him just reminds me of what you had to go through because of him,â he says before pulling away. âBut he did help. And well, Soo and I are still upset that you didnât tell us sooner. You know we wouldâve driven here on Thursday night.â
âI know, and thatâs exactly why. You both had something big going on and I could wait,â you reply, a reason you give them everytime.Â
Wanting a short breather from all this, you excuse yourself and ask Soomin to help you with something in the bathroom, and she heads there right away.
âCan you make sure that those two donât murder each other?â You whisper to Yoongi as you gesture towards Jimin and Jungkook.
âIt would be entertaining if they did, but yes, Iâll try,â he chuckles.
You walk to where Soomin is and after closing the door, she looks at you with the same amusement that sheâs had since she arrived.
âWhat in the romance drama is this!â She exclaims, lowering her voice when you scold at her to keep it down. âAll your three men coming to your home to make sure youâre okay? Talk about making an impression.â
âThey arenât my men, okay!â You scowl at her. âThey all just happened to have the same thought. And no, Jimin doesnât count.â
âWhatever,â Soomin laughs. âItâs just⊠I know youâre hurt and that youâll be okay but itâs just amusing to see them show up for you like this. Especially the big boss. Heâs way hotter up close, I can tell you that.â
âPlease donât remind me,â you frown. âI wish there was a potion I could take to make him look unattractive to me so that Iâd stop being so giddy at everything he does. And fuck, Soo, I havenât been like this in ages. Or ever.â
âWell, you havenât been this accepting of someoneâs attention, thatâs for sure.â
âYeah, and Iâm being silly. I might just be putting myself up for disappointment here,â you groan. âI mean, I donât even know what Iâm feeling, but I know what Iâm not supposed to feel. And heâs not making it any easier.â
âYour situation isnât easy in the first place, hun. And there are many reasons why,â she sighs, wishing there was a way to uncomplicate this very complicated relationship you have with Jungkook. âBut whatever it is you think you shouldnât feel, think about what he may be feeling, too. He wouldnât be making all this effort since Thursday night for this to just be nothing.â
âI wish none of that means anything. Thatâs probably gonna be easier, right? That he doesnât feel anything remotely close to what I do? Thatâs probably better than dealing with all the complications.â
âMaybe, but we donât really know,â Soomin says, pulling you in for a hug. âBut also think about how new and different this feels. It might be worth it in the long run.â
You fall into her embrace, knowing that during the toughest times of your life, this was your saving grace. Itâs no different when youâre confused and in need of guidance, and though youâve always made decisions for yourself with knowledge of the consequences, Soomin was there to back you up during the times when you were going in somewhat blindly. She wants you to be happy, and you wonât really know if continuing to feel what you do about Jungkook will make you so. If all else fails, well, you could always go back home, or maybe return to Busan and start a life there. Jungkook will just be a memory; you hope to the heavens itâll be a good one.
You shake away the thoughts and finally go back out and are relieved to find some peace. Jiminâs washing your dishes while talking to Yoongi who wipes them dry. Jungkook sits on your sofa, looking around quietly, but he stands when he sees you approach him.Â
âIâll go ahead,â he says, gesturing towards the door. âI⊠I think youâve got everything you need.â
âLet me walk you there,â you smile.Â
Heâs outside the door when you thank him again then apologize if Jimin made him uncomfortable.
âItâs okay. Iâd be protective of my best friend, too, if I learned how their boss treated them,â he responds.
âI, uh⊠those were hard times and I may have complained quite a bit about you,â you pout. âIâm so sorry.â
âIâm sure I deserved it,â he chuckles. âYouâre lucky you have them. I mean, my best friends tease me a lot and say shit about me to my face and behind my back.â
âOh come on, Seokjin and Taehyung love you,â you laugh. âIâve seen it, but you all also said youâre like that to each other; itâs how you guys grew up. I mean, I was the new girl in school and Jimin and Soomin have been protective since day one, whereas your best friends have shown you tough love since you were kids. They said you never accepted their affection so they switched tactics.â
âThatâs fair. I was always shy and then turned into a bitter, introverted child. There was no transition, I guess. Now weâre adults and have just stuck with each other because weâre all weâve ever known.â
âWell, you make decisions to stand by people, Jungkook. They do with you and you do the same with them. Plus, youâre not that insufferable,â you tease.Â
âAt least you donât think so. Not anymore, I hope,â he says softly, looking away.Â
âPeople deserve second chances. You gave me some and more and I⊠Iâm glad you did. I at least get to see this side of you thatâs helped me a lot these past months. Iâm thankful. And I hope you know that.â
Jungkook just nods, unable to reply through words again. You let him, knowing itâs his default response. He walks to his car and turns around for a final goodbye, leaving you in anticipation for when youâd be with him again.
âWell, that was a long goodbye,â Yoongi says, surprising you as he stands behind you. âAnd no, I didnât hear anything.â
You turn to him with a playful frown. âI was just making sure that Jimin didnât make him feel too bad. I mean, I know I complained a lot but still. I didnât want Jungkook to think I cursed his existence or something.â
âYou did at one point though,â Yoongi laughs. âBut itâs acceptable. Jungkook was rude, and heavens know how much shit I gave him for treating you the way he did.â
âYou did, huh?â
âI always told you Iâd look out for you, ___. Whatever happened or didnât happen between us, I was always going to have your back.â
âYouâre heaven-sent, Min Yoongi,â you smile. âI wish I could do half as much as you do for me.â
âYou do more. I hope you donât ever doubt the comfort that your presence gives to people. Maybe thatâs what itâs done to Jungkook. And I know he hasnât felt much of that in years.â
Itâs Yoongiâs last words before he says goodbye, and they stay in your head for the next few days. Maybe Soominâs right - all that Jungkook has been doing might mean something, and you hope that finding out what it is will all be worth it.
Jungkook decides to meet with his friends at one of his favorite restaurants for lunch. All he planned on doing today was visit you and he has nothing else going on for the rest of it. The club scene has become boring for him, and going to one only to bring home a woman to hook up with is no longer appealing, not when you invade his mind all the time.
Being welcomed in your home was refreshing. And even if it was awkward, meeting your friends allowed him another peak into your world. You choose the people you allow in, and you donât choose many of them. The ones you do stay for a long time, and thatâs the kind of person you seem to be. You value relationships so much thatâs why you donât have many of them, and with all that you went through and the vulnerability youâve both shown each other, heâs started to hope that one day, heâd be deserving of that, too.Â
âSo did you feel like a fish out of water being there with her actual friends?â Seokjin asks. âBecause I donât know what youâd consider your relationship with her is. Boss-assistant feels too simplistic at this point. Are you friends? Are you more? Or is that all too ambiguous?â
âI donât⊠know,â Jungkook sighs. âWeâre all that but we also arenât. Weâve gone through so much that it doesnât seem like thereâs a way to define what we are. But I feel like Iâve seen her at her most vulnerable and weâve connected because of that.â
âAnd what about you? Have you been vulnerable in front of her?â Seokjin asks.
Has he? Jungkook thinks. Maybe that first time he asked for your help with his new role but he supposes itâs nothing compared to what youâve shown him, intentional or not.
âNot really. I⊠I donât let myself be. Thatâs still distance I need to establish,â Jungkook reasons.
âMore like, because you know that if you do show that side of you, youâre scared youâll find out that sheâll understand, and that having her next to you is what you need to heal whatever parts of you that are still hurting?â Seokjin counters.Â
âI donât want to need her, you know that. Thereâs a boundary I shouldnât cross. Sheâs my assistant andââ
âYouâve been treating her like the most important person and itâs not hard to miss,â Taehyung interjects. âYou were never like this, not since Chaerin.â
âI donât even know what it is about ___ that just makes me consider risking things, you know?â Jungkook sighs. âIâm always torn with what our reality is and what we could be but Iâm afraid that if we cross that line, weâll have to make sacrifices. I⊠Iâm finding myself wanting her around all the time. When she leaves, I want her to stay. When sheâs not there, I want her to come. But at the same time, I donât want her too close because I donât know if I can have her or if I can want her. Because I donât know what of me I can give that wonât hurt her,â he admits, with a bit of help from some whiskey.
âMaybe if you let yourself be vulnerable, youâd know,â Seokjin advises. âSome people would run and hide but thereâs always that one person who wouldnât. That might just be her. And then youâll learn what you can give, too.â
Jungkook lets his friendsâ words settle and then thinks about them throughout the night that he spends all alone in his penthouse, with another glass of whiskey in his hand as he looks out the balcony. A part of him wants you to run and hide when you see who he really is, what he hides and what heâs ashamed of. Maybe that would be easier, he thinks; maybe that would hurt less.
You return to work the next Tuesday, having gone to the hospital the day before and being cleared to return to your usual routine. Jimin and Soomin stayed with you until that evening, with you rejecting their insistence to stay another day. You can manage, you assure them. Youâre able to walk properly now and would just need to do daily exercises, wear the elastic bandage for another week, and forego the heels.Â
Jungkookâs pleased to know that youâre doing better and makes sure you donât walk around if you donât need to, so heâs been the one going to see you when he needs something. He also postponed some potential site visits for the project that he and Hoseok are working on until youâre fully capable, which is why itâs three weeks later when you find yourself in the car with him, on the way to some towns in nearby provinces on an early Friday morning.Â
Mr. Ri called in sick today and Jungkook didnât want to deal with a chauffeur he doesnât know, so he decided to drive instead, thinking itâs more efficient that way. These are all initial checks and being that youâre the only one from his team whoâs privy to the details, he wanted you to join him as a sounding board and also to get your own thoughts about what youâll be seeing. He has a vision in mind and he needs to translate it properly; youâve been helpful these past months in making sure heâs able to do that.
Disregarding what this time alone with you would do to him, Jungkook meets you in his penthouse, telling himself to focus on only one thing today, and thatâs finding the right place for his planned project.Â
You leave early for a quick stop at a cafe and then head north to some towns in Gyeonggi province. There are some properties and land that are up for sale, and you prepared the information about them beforehand, allowing Jungkook to play around with the timeline and budget in his mind, even drawing rough drafts on his iPad as he assesses them. Youâre both in work-mode, discussing each site on the way to the next one, with you searching for more details along the way and him, stopping on the side of the road to add an idea that he comes up with on the spot.Â
Itâs a little chaotic, as his mind goes from one thing to another, but you suppose this is how Jungkook naturally is. Youâve seen him perform his duties in various ways, but this is when you see the most raw side of him, and itâs quite the privilege to see. He always said he preferred the creative aspect of the job, which is why he enjoyed his time in Singapore, handling the design department. You contend that heâs grown tremendously in his executive role. As Hoseok has said, Jungkook relates to his staff better now, and has even engaged and attracted more partners with his great ideas.
Youâre quite sentimental going on this trip with him. It wasnât long ago when you were going to work with anxiety, anticipating his next criticism so you can prepare yourself, and then going home feeling like a failure. So much has happened since then, and you could even say that youâve found comfort in your daily routines; doing something different like this is now exciting and something you look forward to, especially since it allows you to go outside, see the sights, and breathe the cool air.Â
âYou okay there?â He asks, noticing your silence.
âYeah. I was just thinking how 10 months ago, this wouldâve stressed me out so much.â
âWhat? Going on a road trip?â
âPretty much going anywhere with you,â you laugh. âCar rides even with Mr. Ri made me freak out, and I was so scared to make a mistake or make you wait for information that I couldnât find. And now here we are - I survived the last five hours with you and not once did you groan at me.â
âWow, I mustâve been a really terrible boss to make your standard for a non-stressful day to be that low,â he laughs before turning serious. âBut I⊠Iâm⊠Iâm sorry, for all the stress and anxiety that I caused you. I was being selfish and irrational about it. I hate change and you were the biggest one, even with my new role. I took out all the frustration on you and I shouldnât have.â
He says more than he expected, but itâs also the apology that he shouldâve givenâthat you deserved âmonths ago.Â
âI forgive you,â you say softly, glancing at him before returning your eyes towards the road. âI always knew my limits and I guess I let you push it and that was on me. I couldâve stood up to you, too.â
âYou did though, more than once. And that knocked some sense into me.â
âI guess,â you hum. âAnd then things improved and Iâm just glad they did.â
Thereâs a prolonged silence after, as you both opt to bask in the scenery around you. Thereâs that understanding and acceptance of how things were and that regardless of whatâs going on in your own minds, you at least have this. You think to yourself that this just makes leaving that much harder, but at least this is one more memory you could take with you.
You make it to Hwacheon in Gangwon past noon, and this is where you spend most of your time in, as the sites are spread out around the county. There are areas tucked away in the mountains while there are those closer to town with grand views. Itâs in the latter where you grab some lunch and go through some of his plans, and you take in his ideas, learning from him in the process.Â
Itâs late in the afternoon when you inspect the final site, which is in an area in the neighboring Chuncheon county. Itâs got potential for another project that CEO Jeon is looking to do, and with your notes completed, you and Jungkook start the trip back home. You would reach the tail-end of the Friday night traffic by the time you return to Seoul, the GPS says, and so both of you savor the skyâs changing colors as it transitions to the evening, letting the soft sounds of the radio replace the silence.
Barely 30 minutes in, the rain starts to pour, and itâs seconds later when it dawns on you what that means, as you hear heavy breathing next to you. You turn to Jungkook whose hands are tightly gripping the wheel, with sweat lining his eyebrows despite the cool temperature.
âDid the forecast say it was gonna rain?â He asks, the mix of panic and frustration evident in his voice.Â
âYes, but not until late in the evening,â you say, checking your phone to make sure you got the correct information.Â
Your heart breaks upon realizing that at midday, the weather station warned that there was going to be a thunderstorm, with rainfall coming in around this time. You inform Jungkook, and despite all the progress in your relationship, your heart breaks a second time when he says that you shouldâve constantly checked, that the weather changes all the time and you shouldâve been mindful, and that now youâre both gonna be stuck on the road because heâs unable to drive and you donât know how to. His tone is harsh, accusatory, as if it was something you could control, as if everything was your fault, just like how it was before.
Jungkook stops on the side of the road as the downpour continues, and he leans his head on the steering wheel now as he takes deep breaths. You tell him he could breathe better if he sits straight up, but he ignores you.Â
A part of you wants to remark how itâs ironic that just earlier, he was apologizing for the way he treated you, and now itâs like youâve both taken a few steps back. You want to say itâs not your fault, that you wouldnât even have known that the rain affected him this way if you hadnât seen him be nervous about it when you went home from the gala last year. But you think about the way his eyes looked earlier, how they filled with worry and fear, like there was a sense of powerlessness that you know a little about.Â
So you settle for a bit of grace and understanding, thinking theyâre what he needs.
âI donât know why this is on me,â you say softly. âI didnât know how bad it was but if I did, I wouldâve checked constantly and I wouldâve had us turn back the second I saw that forecast. And if I could drive, Iâd drive us back as fast as I could. Iâm sorry.â
He slows his breathing and sits up. His hands still tightly gripping the wheel but his eyes are downcast, and you suppose thereâs more sadness than anger, so you stop pressing your nails on your skin, which youâd started doing in anticipation of him arguing with you about it.
âI donât like the rain,â he shares, his voice low. âI⊠I have a bad memory of it as a kid and I just get reminded whenever it starts. I panic when it gets louder and I just⊠I canât stay out here when that's all I can hear.â
His honesty surprises you. You canât imagine how it mustâve been like for him, even more that he has to suffer through this right now in front of you, considering how hard it is for him to express how he feels. You donât know how bad this weather is gonna go, and at this pace, the thunderstorm will probably reach you by the time you make it back to Seoul. So you do what you do best, and thatâs to come up with options.Â
âThereâs a guesthouse not far from here,â you say after checking the map. âItâs the closest one. We could spend the night there and wait out the rain. Thatâs better than being stuck here or continuing the drive back to the city.â
He nods in agreement, knowing thereâs not much he could do. He doesnât want to be stuck here; even more, he doesnât want to unload on you nor have you witness how much worse it could be.Â
He keys in the address you give him while you call the property and ask if they still have available rooms. They do, so you reserve two and sigh in relief that thatâs one problem solved.
You make it there in 15 minutes. Jungkook heads out the car first with the rain having eased up a bit, and you retrieve his luggage from the trunk, the one he keeps there for emergency trips and instances like this one. It has enough clothes for a day, and youâre glad that at least he has something to change into.
You make it inside and meet the owners then introduce yourself, stating that you reserved two rooms.Â
âIâm so sorry but we had to give up one of them,â the woman says. âA family came in with a baby and we couldnât turn them away. The weatherâs going to get worse tonight and we try to accommodate as many people as we can. I hope you understand.â
âThatâs⊠thatâs okay,â you say, knowing you wouldâve done the same.Â
The thought of sharing a room with Jungkook feels too intimate and definitely not good for your heart, added to the fact that youâre probably not his favorite person right now, so you try to find a way out. You turn to the living room and see the sofa thatâs big enough for you, so you ask if you can just stay there instead.
âOur cleaners will be using that space since they canât go home due to the rain. Iâm sorry again, Miss. Your room has twin beds so I hope that eases your worry somehow.â
âItâs fine, weâll manage,â Jungkook says from behind you, hoping to the heavens that he will. He has one fear, and thatâs you seeing how he really is during times like this.
He takes the key and walks up the stairs to the room youâre given. Itâs spacious with a fair enough distance between both beds. He takes the one farther from the window then gets his clothes from his bag. It dawns on him that you donât have your own with you, so he offers you his sweatshirt.Â
âItâs okay,â you shake your head. âItâs gonna be cold and youâre gonna need it.â
âSo will you. You canât be in wet clothes, not in this weather.â
âItâs happened before,â you shrug.
â___, just take it,â he insists, placing the item on your bed. âI have a top here that I can wear and the blankets will be enough. This is loose but itâs at least better than damp clothing. And you can go ahead in the bathroom. Iâll just give Mr. Ri a call.â
You nod and head out, taking his jumper and the towel with you. Youâre given some basic toiletries, and the warm shower is just what you need for that bit of comfort after a stressful evening. As youâre about to dress up inside, you hear a knock on the door.
âI asked the lady if they had spare pajamas for you and she gave me a set,â Jungkook says from outside. âIâll leave them on a stool by the door.â
You wait for him to leave before getting them and putting them on. Itâs a plain set of shorts and shirt thatâs a little big but itâs way better than your damp skirt and blouse, which the owners offered to wash and dry for you for tomorrow.
You return to the room with Jungkook sitting on the floor, and you give him back his sweatshirt that he turns down.Â
âIâm fine,â he insists. âDonât you get cold easily? Youâll need that.âÂ
He walks out, barely meeting your eyes. Youâre sitting on the edge of your bed when he returns half an hour later, the sight of him with damp hair in black sweatpants and a white sleeveless top doing things to you. But you shake the thoughts away, especially as he once again creates that distance. He doesnât look at you when he settles in bed, nor when he switches off his bedside light, and definitely not when he turns around to face the other way. You sigh to yourself, feeling even more alone now with him acting like this.
You canât really blame him though. Dealing with something that elicits painful memories is difficult, and you understand the tendency to isolate yourself and push people away when that happens. Itâs what you do sometimes, but still, it doesnât mean it doesnât hurt you a little when Jungkook does this to you, considering how good your relationship has become, regardless of your stupid attraction.
Settling in your bed, you decide to turn around and face the window. You focus on the droplets creating their own artwork on the glass, in hopes that itâll help you take your mind off Jungkook, even if heâs literally just a few feet away from you. The last thing you want is a strained relationship, and you hope that this doesnât make him fall back into his old ways. Although heâs experienced a few stressful moments these past months, they werenât personal, and you suppose situations like this are when his emotions truly come out.
The rain has gotten stronger again and youâre pleased that Jungkook isnât awake for this, based on the soft snores you hear. Youâre about to fall asleep, the sound hypnotizing you a little, but thatâs when the first blare of thunder strikes, causing you to jerk in bed in surprise. It used to scare you because of what it reminded you of, but you learned how to manage it after the first hit; the succeeding ones are no longer triggering. In fact, you just think of how it used to drown out the sounds of what you were truly afraid of.
Just then, you hear distressed moans. The sounds of frantic breathing and shifts on the bed follow right after. And then thereâs a restrained groan, like a call for help that doesnât fully come out, and thatâs what alarms you. You immediately get off the bed and rush to Jungkookâs side. You see that heâs still asleep, his body - now uncovered by the blanket - is tense, despite his efforts of turning about. The low sounds of almost-cries convince you that heâs having a nightmare.Â
Thunder hits once again and itâs much louder this time, eliciting another frantic response from Jungkook. Heâs kicking the covers while gripping the sheets, and with another roar of thunder that causes him to scream, thatâs when you decide to wake him up.Â
âJungkook, hey, listen to me,â you say, sitting on the edge of the bed and keeping his head still with your hands. Youâre able to control him as he continues tossing and turning, repeating his name until he slowly opens his eyes. âHey, youâre safe with me, okay? Just focus on my voice.â
Heâs awake now and you see the worry in his eyes, but you talk to him calmly, wanting him to trust you. It works, as he nods and slows down his movements. But heâs still breathing heavily, his lips chattering and the rest of his body shivering.Â
You anticipate another hit of thunder, and youâre able to shield him from it, pressing your palms on his ears, trying to drown out the sound. You stay that way, thumbing his temples as you tell him itâs okay, that youâve got him, and that itâll be over soon. You hold his gaze to let him know that youâre not going anywhere, and his pretty eyes that often look so far away are now overtaken with fear.Â
âJust look at me, alright? And follow my breathing,â you instruct him, your voice as gentle as you can make it despite your own worries for him.
He does as you say, his hands gripping your wrists as if to keep them there, and you assure him that you wonât let go until he says so.
âYouâre doing good, just keep breathing,â you repeat, pacing your breathing with his until youâre doing it together.Â
You donât know how long you stay that way, with his head between your hands and your eyes locked on his. It takes a while, but the thunder eventually stops and the rain eases. Jungkook finally calms down and you slowly release him from your hold. You watch him shut his eyes, as if in desperation to let everything go, before he opens them again.Â
âIs that better?â You ask, moving just a bit farther from him to give him space, but you remain close, wanting to be next to him in case something happens again.
âYeah, that was, uh⊠that was tiring,â he huffs.
âI think the thunder has passed but if it happens again, Iâll be here, okay?â
He nods, his soft and desperate eyes now looking at you to express his gratitude. You want so badly to hug him, to hold his still-shaking hands and assure him that heâs not alone, that you wonât let anything hurt him for the rest of the night, and that you understand it all - whatever it is heâs afraid of, and why he keeps it all to himself.
But you suppose thatâs going too far. Youâre afraid that youâd want to stay there, even more if he doesnât want you to. So you nod as well and think that he at least has this to comfort him, that he at least knows youâre just there.
You walk back to your bed and lie down, facing him this time. You smile, wanting that assurance to be the last thing he sees before he falls asleep again. Jungkook does the same as he settles under the covers, patting it down so he could see you better. You both stay there, safe in your corners, your eyes telling each other things you canât say.
Whatever distance you felt earlier has shortened. Right now, with both of you falling asleep to each otherâs view, heâs never felt so close.
The morning after heavy rain is always bittersweet. Thereâs the reality of the damage it caused but you also canât deny that it gives life to other living things. What it also does is make way for clear skies and give you that fresh, rainwater scent of the grass and the trees. Itâs what you see and smell when you open the bedroom windows, reminding you that the evening has passed and the worst is over.Â
You spot Jungkook seated on one of the chairs in the garden, and you hope that the view is making him feel better, with the nightmare from last night slowly drifting away from his mind. You dress up in the dry clothes you find hanging on the doorknob of the room then head downstairs, surprised to see food prepared in the dining area. The tofu stew and grilled mackerel are so appetizing, and the loud rumbling of your stomach reminds you that you didnât eat last night, with all the stress making dinner your last priority.
âHello, dear. It was a pretty hard evening so we prepared something for our guests,â the owner says, her radiant smile reflecting the brightness of the day. âYou may call your friend outside so you can both eat and get ready for a long drive home.â
You thank her then call Jungkook, his eyes brightening when he walks back inside and sees the food. He engages in conversation with the owners, asking about this town and the surrounding ones, and what their appeal is to non-residents. You gauge that heâs doing a bit of research himself, and you think heâs at least not too out of it to still do so.
âYouâre free to stay until noon,â the owner informs you. âYou can enjoy the view outside; itâs really pretty now that the sky has cleared. Iâll be making tea shortly as well.â
Jungkook says heâll return to the garden and you wait for the hot drinks before following him. Youâre unsure if he wants you around but you try, sitting next to him then sighing in relief when he doesnât move away.
âI was 10 years old when my parents sent me and my brother to a cabin somewhere in Hwasun,â he starts. âI thought they were coming with us but it was just me and Jeong-sik and some staff. He and I never got along. If he wasnât ignoring me, he was teasing me. But that day, he convinced me to play hide-and-seek, saying that by the time he finds me, our parents would be back. We were outdoors and I ended up wandering too far, so close to the woods that I couldnât find my way back. My brother hadnât come and I was getting scared. And then it started to rain.â
âJungkook, you donât have toââ
âIt started getting stronger and the skies had become so dark, I could barely see anything,â he continues, his eyes fixed towards the mountains faraway. âThe rain made the ground slippery so I decided to just sit by a large tree and hope someone would find me. It felt like hours and maybe it was. The thunder was so loud then and it kept going and going and going. And I was drenched and all alone, and no matter how hard I screamed, no one could hear me.â
âIâm so sorry, Jungkook,â you say, feeling your heart break as he narrates a painful memory that you can relate with.Â
Itâs only close to what you experienced yet it feels so real to you. You can feel his fear and his pain in the tremble of his voice, in the way he grips on the edges of the bench, in the way his jaw clenches at the memory, like itâs one heâs tried hard to bury yet canât get rid of, no matter how hard he tries.Â
But this feels so personal, and you donât want him to feel like he needs to share it with you.
âYou donât have to explain,â you add. âI know itâs difficult to share something like that.â
âBut I want to,â he responds, turning to you now. âBecause Iâve carried the memory with me for 20 years and Iâve been dealing with it all on my own. But thatâs not an excuse to treat you the way I did last night. Thatâs not a reason for me to take it out on you and especially to blame you. That was wrong of me and Iâm sorry, ___. IâŠâ
He looks down, perhaps trying to gather the courage he needs to be honest with you, to be vulnerable with you.
âI donât want you to think that I didnât need you because I did,â he adds. âI was scared and I didnât think I needed you but you were there and Iâm so sorry.â
You sit there and watch him cower onto himself, and somehow you see the little boy who was scared, who was wondering why heâd been left alone, who was waiting for someone to come find him or perhaps⊠someone to sit there and be with him until the rain stopped. Thereâs a lot he carries; thereâs also a lot he buries, as if thereâs a bottomless hole within him where he keeps everything hidden but it still feels too heavy, too much, taking from him every time he hides something new.Â
You donât say anything for a while, as you start to see Jungkook for who he really is. You feel the weight of his words and how much it took for him to say them. Itâs not that his experience makes him different, but now that you know the pain heâs been carrying with him, youâre able to see the other parts of him that heâs unable to show, perhaps too afraid that someone wouldnât understand, or that they wouldnât stay if they found out why he keeps his distance and why he pushes people away.
Your silence prompts him to look up. You meet his eyes and see the sadness in them and it feels like he needs more than just forgiveness.
âWe do things we donât mean to when weâre afraid,â you tell him. âIt doesnât always mean we intend on hurting them. And I understand that, more than you know. Iâll never take that against you.â
Jungkook nods, shifting again towards the view as he lets your words sink in. He was hoping for forgiveness, but he got so much more. Maybe thereâs a reason why youâve been patient and gentle with him ever since the beginning. Perhaps youâre carrying your own burden and painful memories that youâre unable to share and deal with, too, and though heâs nothing like you, thereâs comfort in knowing that youâre the same somehow.
He senses you turn back to look at the mountains, and the silence prompts him to continue the story of an experience heâs only shared twice before - once to his best friends and another time with Chaerin, all of whom have seen this side of him - the scared and vulnerable side. They were understanding and supportive as well, trying to find ways to comfort and help him deal with it. Youâre the third and the one heâs known the shortest time, yet he feels more comfort with you than anyone whoâs ever tried.
âI fell asleep at that tree while waiting,â he recalls. âThe next thing I know, I was being carried back to the cabin. The rain had stopped but it was still dark, and I was tended to until I fell asleep again. I was sick for days and I didnât see my parents until we were back in Seoul. Itâs just a hard thing to remember. I know we have selective memories and I always wish thatâs one thing that I donât ever have to remember but life isnât that kind, I guess.â
âIt isnât. But we learn to face those fears though, and manage them. Itâs the only way we can get through it,â you say.
âHave you?â He asks, wondering if thatâs another similarity he shares with you.Â
âNot really. I wouldnât be alone and where I am if I have,â you say. âBut Iâm trying. And Iâll continue to.â
âThat makes one of us,â he sighs.Â
âWell, itâs not always easy if youâre not quite sure what youâre really afraid of,â you respond. âIs it just thunder?â
âYeah⊠but once the rain starts, it tells me that thunder could come. It doesnât always but itâs what my brain tells me. Then I get anxious and I⊠I donât know what to do. Like Iâm paralyzed and unable to think or move. I just⊠stay there and sometimes, I donât even know whatâs happening.â
âWell, it rained when I got injured,â you remind him. âBut you managed to get me to the hospital. And you stayed with me. Thatâs definitely something.â
âYou were hurt and it was more important that you got treated,â he reasons. âThat was scary and I guess my brain told me to get shit done that moment.â
âSo⊠do I always have to be hurt for you to get through the rain when it starts getting bad?â You ask.
âDonât talk like that. I canât have you going through that again,â he frowns at you.Â
The way he reacts to the thought of you being hurt gives you that warm feeling again. But it reminds you that you feel the same. You donât want him to be scared, you donât want him hurt, too.
âFine. But when it starts to rain and youâre all alone and you feel like you canât manage, you call me, okay?â You tell him.
âAnd what would that do?â
âThat way I can talk you through it. Maybe go to you if you want me to.â
âWhy would you do that?â
âBecause during the times I was afraid and alone, you were there,â you bravely say, turning to him and prompting him to do the same. âSometimes something triggers those memories but then I think of how you stayed with me in the alley and in the playground and in my apartment. I think of you and I stop feeling scared. Maybe you can think of last night when it starts to get bad, too. And we can just create more of those memories to override the bad ones. Wouldnât that be better?â
He savors your words, not realizing how much youâve held onto your moments together. And he understands that now. The way you held him together last night is ingrained in his mind, and if thatâs how it feels to be with you during his darkest moments, he starts to wonder how good it would feel during the good ones.
Maybe heâll start with this, as you both sip citrus tea while looking at the lush mountains out on the horizon. Heâll continue with the scenic drive back to Seoul and a stopover at a cafe for some iced coffee and conversations about good memories. And at least for today, heâll end with the sight of you walking to your apartment and then turning around to wave him goodbye, and then your smile giving him warmth on this cold afternoon.
The door shuts and he starts the trip back to his place - empty, lonely, just like how itâs been for years, all his pent up emotions bringing him to this point of isolation. But thereâs you - the feel of your touch, the soothing sound of your voice, and the gentleness that got him through the night.
He misses you already. And much as he knows heâs in big trouble, thinking about you and wanting you is all he could do.

earth i need to catch up on ur ratio fics (i read some of flower one and i ate that shit up omg) because now the thought of seething annoying veritas being all angry whenever you even look at someone else infests my mind like an annoying worm. i hope you know this is what those fics do to me
x : EQUILIBRIUM : *+ïŸ
in which: ratio navigates through the perplexities of pining after you.
warnings: fluff, 1.6k words, intelligentsia guild!gn!reader is kind of a social butterfly and talkative, ratio is so pathetic i love him T^T, alcohol, aventurine feature! my writing isn't the best for this one i apologise :,D
a/n: thank u for the ask mhie!! i wanted to say that you enabled me perfectly because ever since his release, i've only ever thought about this one scenario where he's staring at reader from afar and absolutely seething because he's not the one talking to them xD sorry for taking so long omfg and im sorry for turning this into a fic, i just saw my opportunity and lunged at it like an animal rawr
Jealousy and envy are not familiar concepts to Dr. Ratio.
He knows of them, understands the inner workings and philosophical aptitude of both, knowing that they lead man down irrational paths. Yet, for all his years, he has not felt the bitterness of jealousy and envy squeeze him, cannot fathom why one cannot control their feelings and maintain modesty.Â
Perhaps, the root of it was whatever Ratio wanted, he received. The only thing he has ever craved is knowledge, and it is available for him with the flick of a page, absorbing even the most complex of theories with ease. Conceptual, mathematical, scientific- not a single school of thought has hidden itself from his vast mind, proven by the many PhDs he has with his name.
Everything fickle that anyone could ever crave has long been his.Â
Envious over someone elseâs wealth? Money comes and goes, and merely serves as a medium of exchange. As long as he has enough to live comfortably, then he is content. Having too much of one thing can often result in a bottomless pit of wanting more, and material good was perhaps the most evil of all.
Jealous over someone elseâs beauty? Compliments and adoration are not an unfamiliar concept to him; one glance at whatâs under that stone mask will have others fawning over him instantly. He claims the mask is to protect him from idiots, but perhaps it also serves to shield others from the walking sculpture that is the Veritas Ratio, sharp features and toned body, there is nothing undesirable about him.
In conclusion, jealousy and envy are not familiar concepts to Dr. Ratio. Until he met you.
A fellow member of the Intelligentsia Guild but in another department, you too are a favoured delegate of the IPC, frequently attending the same events and trips as him. Thus, it was only natural that youâd become acquainted and that heâd grow to respect you, hearing about your achievements and dedications as an academic. What was unnatural, however, was the palpitations of his heart, weakness in his knees, paired with an overwhelming excitement to see you.
Heâs no fool. These sensations were all symptoms of romantic attraction, but you were a variable uncounted for in the distribution of his life, and he was not ready for an outlier so powerful that it completely âskewedâ him over. Â
Now, he laments in the corner of champagne parties meant for socialites. He is no lover of mundane interaction but as his contract with the IPC, he comes as a representative of the Intelligentsia Guild.Â
These formal events always drained the life out of him, needing him to discard his everyday, flowey, carefree attire for a constraining suit, conforming him into the regular majority.Â
He raises the glass of champagne to his lips and takes a small sip, the liquor serves as lubricant to the throat. The smooth finish of the drink is exactly what he needs; talking about the same subject again and again becomes exhausting, and even though it is in his role criteria, Ratio cannot wait to leave.
But he wonât, because he hasnât seen you yet.Â
Glancing around the room for the upteemth time this evening, you still have not entered his line of sight, and he leans against the bar in disappointment.
âOh, why the long face, Ratio?â A mischievous voice coos from beside him. âItâs not a good look on you.â
âSpare me your sentiments, gambler,â Ratio spits back.
âAs you wish. Not enjoying the party?â
âIf you have something you wish to say then please, spare me the pleasantries.â
Aventurine laughs, all boisterous and extravagant, gold jewelry clicking against each other, as if coming alive to match his jovialness. He really is a personified headache. âYouâre looking for someone, arenât you?â
The scholar tenses, muscles tugging at the stiff fabric of his blazer, but that micro action was enough of an answer for Aventurine.
A gloved hand points up to the mezzanine of the grand hall. Ratio spots you, leaning against the railing whilst conversing with another man, one briefly talked to earlier. If he didnât like him before, then he certainly didnât now.
Handsome face turning into a small scowl, itâs almost as if you feel the intensity of a certain, golden stare, causing you to turn around and find the source, eyes eventually landing on the figures of a coworker or two. A brief smile graces your face before you turn around again, turning your back on the two onlookers.
Ratio loathes what he sees, and something within him yearns to be the only man you look at, causing an ugly, green sensation to brew within him; a concoction that can only be labelled as âjealousyâ.
He just cannot figure out what other men have that he doesnât; what is making him secondary in your heart? Why do you give these... idiots the time of day when you could be with him- talking to him?
It's all too perplexing, you make him perplexed.
âWell, go on, doctor,â Aventurine prompts. âPlace your bets before itâs too late.âÂ
The purple-haired sighs, pushing himself off the bar. His feet take him to you, up the velvet-carpeted stairs. His gaze never strays from you, ensuring you stay within his line of sight and eventually, he stops right behind you, acting as a looming shadow.
His gaze is cold, hoping to pierce through your conversation partner so he can finally cower away and make room for Ratio.
âDoctor!â You exclaim, surprised by his sudden appearance. âWhen did you get here?â
Taking a hint, the stranger finally begins to peel himself away. âIt was lovely talking to you, Y/n. I hope this wonât be our last conversation.â
âLikewise, have a lovely evening,â you farewell him with a small smile as the other party turns and eventually disappears from sight.
Finally. Triumph and victory settles in Ratioâs chest when your attention is directed solely at him, but you look up at him with arms crossed and a raised eyebrow.
âI swore I saw you downstairs moments ago, how did you get up here so fast?â
âI simply walked a normal pace, is that so abnormal?â
âI suppose not,â you huff, rolling your eyes. Veritas allows himself a glance over of your outfit, admiring you. âHave you talked to anyone interesting?â
You are by far the most interesting part of the evening, he thinks.
âHardly,â he murmurs.Â
âMy guess is that youâd prefer to be grading student papers?â You muse, leaning in closer.
His heartbeat spikes. âWell, that is hard to say. Which would you prefer?â
âAs much as I love my students, I need a break from the same thesis statements regurgitated in different formats. Iâd rather be here.â
âThen that is my answer too.â
You give him a look that says âreally?â, clearly not believing his aloof statement. Truthfully, he would rather be here because here is where you are, and heâd like a few moments with you before returning to the gloominess of his office. The hour hand is only at 11, whatâs the rush?
Then, your eyes flicker to his neckline and they widen briefly, as if finding an issue with his tuxedo. âHold still,â you command, hands coming up to rest on his sturdy chest.
Youâre fixing his tie, he realises, feeling the fabric tighten ever so slightly as you adjust it. When youâre done, you flatten out the material with a satisfied smile, running your hands casually over his chest, and he hopes you cannot feel his heart jump. How do you touch him so easily, as if it means nothing?
âIt was crooked,â you explain, ânow you are looking as sharp as ever, Doc.â
âThank you,â is the best thing he can sputter out.
âNo problem, we need to have our genius looking proper at all times!â
Ratio is too stunned to speak, he fears that if he tried, whatever leaves his mouth will result in a various garbles and attempts at sentences.
Thankfully, you havenât run out of words to say. âOh, I have yet to get a drink! Will you accompany me? I could go for some refreshments right now.â
He nods and extends an arm for you to hold, and you happily accept it, holding onto his bicep as you ramble on about a conversation exchanged earlier in the night. If you were anyone else, he would not have cared in the slightest, but instead, he listens intently, taking slow and measured steps downstairs so you are comfortable.
In this bubble, the esteemed scholar is content. With you so close, it feels as if everything has clicked into place, like the scales of fate have finally balanced and equilibrium has been achieved. He could listen to you forever.
Unfortunately, all good things donât last, because a face Ratio doesnât recognise approaches you, hand resting on your shoulder. Judging from the manner of which they address and talk to you, you are close, and you donât shrug them off. Next thing he knows, youâre ripped away from him, dragged into the sea of people.
You spare him a glance over your shoulder, as if apologising for the sudden disruption.
Still, he sighs, left behind with nothing but fervent symptoms of love clinging to his being, squeezing him for all he is.
