There are a bunch of pages in the Rebellion Production Note about the Dark Orb, but I keep coming back to this image in particular:

The overall shape is reminiscent of a chess piece, which is very fitting in context. The center "pin" holds the orb part in place, and reminds me of Homura/Homulilly's sewing pins. It also reminds me of what we see when Sayaka's grief seed is formed--for split second, a similar "pin" is visible before the rest emerges.

The connection to witches makes sense because the Dark Orb was created in part from a shattered soul gem and has Homulilly's name on it in earcuff form, even though it's not a typical grief seed/soul gem. Elsewhere on this page, it's even directly compared to a witch.

There is a lengthy passage on an earlier page that says the salamander/lizard is laying its wings down in this emblem (which I assume is reference to the Devil falling from heaven) and that this insignia is different from both the Law of Cycles and a Western coat of arms (hence my difficulties in describing it as such, hahaha). It's also said to be a symbol of Homura's faith, which makes sense given the movie's religious overtones and devotion as the source of Homura's power here.

The pink jewel is not visible when the Dark Orb is in earcuff or salamander form, suggesting that Homura is only drawing on her own personal powers, and keeping the Madoka part hidden. Once again, the metaphor is tangible.

The Walpurgis no Kaiten trailer shows a salamander sigil--two of them!--appearing as the unknown "new girl" draws Homura's bow. The doubling is fascinating given the hinted themes of mirrors, reflections and inversions, but what's striking is that this is different from the sigil in Rebellion--no wings and no diamond, only the body of the salamander surrounded by what may be stylized flames.

It's possible this is a redesign/updated version of the original; it certainly resembles some of the discarded concept sketches in the Production Note. But given the presence of a doppelganger Homura, it suggests to me that this is her sigil we're seeing here and this girl is under her influence or her creation--and also that the Law of Cycles is not directly involved. We'll see how it ends up playing out.

With my redesigns of the THH cast I wanted to incorporate distrust elements. With monokuma I wanted to make him pretty cute and fluffy on the outside, but on the inside he's actually disgusting. The guts are also a reference to his distrust design

I feel like Junko is just crazy enough to switch out the guts with the other bodies (sayaka, Leon, ect.) and then randomly monokuma will be like "i know you miss your friends but it's fine cuz they're here :)" while makoto is just weirded out.

I wasn't always a fan of monokuma being a headmaster so I changed it to teacher. If someone asked where the headmaster was he would probably be like he's in the school. Knowing that the guts are his.

I also thought it would be cool if all the red parts on him glowed like a warning light. Also I know it isn't obvious but the guts are kept inside by glass on monokuma stomach.

hey, wanted to say how much i enjoy your portrayal of sayaka (both characterization wise and artistically.) i think the way you’re art style is instantly recognizable is admirable and i love vibrant contrast between colors.

I often rotate the new trailer Sayaka in my mind. Since it’s the person with a lot of problems, it’s reflected now that half of her face is obscured in bandages. Did she encounter something troublesome or injurious? <- She also seems calmer than she ever is before, like someone shot her with enough tranq for an elephant. Still, her school girl counterpart is cheerful as ever, but it’s concerning that her throat is also bandaged. Does the mermaid really lose her voice? I eagerly anticipate the movie. I also want to see Homura reconciling with everyone in the quintet, not just Madoka. Generally just looking forward to the artworks in the show, how different the characters might be this time, and any cool things Sayaka might pull.

so the 2nd trailer for the fourth madoka magica movie JUST came out & i wanna talk about a few theories i have after seeing it:

MADOKA MAGICA SPOILERS BELOW THE CUT, WATCH UP TO REBELLION IF YOU DON'T WANT TO BE SPOILED

The Walpurgisnacht is a culmination of the Holy Quintet's stripped away powers (I'll get to this theory later) & the 15th Clara Doll, Ai (Love), which is why the Clara Doll is stated to "have yet to arrive." This would somewhat make sense as Walpurgisnacht is officially known as the Stage Witch with an unidentified name, who is a culmination of multiple witches & why Homura in the beginning of the trailer dresses in an attire similar to Walpurgisnacht. Let's not forget how familiars are able to become witches themselves.

The Homura lookalike we see in the most recent trailer poster & in certain parts of the trailer could be the Clara Dolls, who have taken the shape of a possibly idealized version of Homura that Homura thinks Madoka would enjoy/be deserving of Madoka's love. Because the Clara Dolls' purpose is to torment Homura, this idealized version of Homura could be the main source of the actual Homura's torment in this world. Not to mention that the Homura lookalike's headband shares a lot of resemblance to the Clara Dolls' typical clothing. Furthermore, as we pan down a large obscure tower of chains, chairs, & etc., there are three different Homuras among the Clara Dolls. In the trailer, the Homura at the bottom is identified to be the real Homura & when you count them all together, it equals 15. Assuming that Ai isn't one of the Clara Dolls we see standing on the tower, Ai is still nowhere to be seen.

Ai may be the magical girl who we see fall down the roof/turn into a witch (possibly the Walpurgisnacht) in the trailer & where Homura may be keeping the Holy Quintet's stripped away powers. This is because we see that this anonymous magical girl not only wields Mami's powers (ribbons) but also Madoka's (a bow). Interestingly, the magical girl's motif is purple & the bow she wields looks exactly like Homura's at the end of the TV anime, basically confirming her connection to Homura. The Clara Doll may be the new "Madoka" Homura has instated in replacement of the actual Madoka, so Madoka no longer has to become a magical girl to save the world. After all, the person Homura loves the most is Madoka.

The Holy Quintet have been stripped of their original powers aka their somewhat different outfits, which could be due to Homura attempting to keep them from fighting back against her rule as they most likely (& definitely for Sayaka) want to reinstate the original Law of Cycles, or possibly worse, Kyubey's control over the magical girl system. Thus Homura has decided to hide their original powers into the anonymous magical girl we see throughout the trailer. This can be seen in Sayaka's redesign, whose power was to heal quickly, now, she's draped in bandages - bandages that noticeably cover her mouth, which could be related to the ending of Rebellion where she confronts Homura's changes to the world & destruction of the Law of Cycles. Mami's outfit seems to have a lot less ribbons & flowers as well, which was a large motif of hers. As for why Homura's own magical girl design is different as well, if you look closely, her outfit is cut very similarly to her devil outfit in Rebellion, which is slightly reinforced by the frame of her soul gem being black instead of gold.

Although it could be very much an animation mistake, Mami's eyes are different, which could hint that she's much more younger or less jaded than she was in all of the original timelines Homura time looped in before the events of Rebellion. This could mean that all of the girls (& hopefully Sayaka as well lol) are living much more happier lives/the lives they wanted, despite being vaguely aware that something seems off.

The Holy Quintet gathering in an abandoned building (other than Homura & Madoka, who Homura obviously refuses to let become a magical girl, let alone be aware of such a thing) may be related to the Walpurgisnacht arriving (aka the title Walpurgisnacht: Rising), whose destruction may have been undone after Homura destroyed the Law of Cycles, thus they're meeting in order to make a plan on how to destroy it in this current world or put a stop to Homura. & assuming if they want to stop her, they will all have to band together to put a stop to her. This could add onto the theory that the Holy Quintet led to the creation of the Walpurgisnacht, as the real life event, Walpurgisnacht/Walpurgis Night is the gathering of multiple witches at once, & what do magical girls become when their soul gems become corrupted? Witches. This means witches are back, WOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! However, if you missed Nagisa, I wouldn't fret, as in the official website, Nagisa is confirmed to make a return, YAAAAAAAAYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!! (I'm still a little disappointed how they didn't include her in the trailer though.)

so here's a crack theory that has seemingly revived & now seems far more sensical because of this trailer:

Because a figure very similar to Homura or just Homura herself is wearing attire that strongly resembles the Walpurgisnacht, she could very much be Walpurgisnacht herself, especially now that she has the power of a devil. & when you put it into perspective how the Walpurgisnacht has no official name & how Homulilly in Rebellion was stated to only evolve into a useless witch because it was missing the 15th Clara Doll, Ai, Homulilly may very much be its actual name. Not to mention how our Homura lookalike is under a parasol that looks vaguely similar to the ruffles of the Walpurgisnacht's dress skirt & stands in an area akin to a stage when Madoka meets her. It doesn't help either that the line the trailer ends on is "And so, let the curtain rise on tonight's dream." This could theoretically mean that in every timeline, Homura has been fighting herself. Madoka Magica has become a psychological anime if it wasn't already - it really is all just an inner struggle.

Hey what do you honestly think about the designs of the other Madoka Magica spinoff Pullea magi Suzune Magica girls? I'm just curious as a cat you know.

Ooooohoho okay okay! I'll go over each character just like I did with the Kazumi ones

Honestly, Suzune's is just kinda boring. If I redesigned it I'd not only add more colour but totally change it up. It's also clearly very scanty under the coat and no, she does not need those sock suspenders. (also the thought that she's always had those, even when younger is horrifying). The fact she can change ability should have totally made a difference to her appearance. A fire theme would have been awesome

Arisa Arisa... dear sweet Arisa... The elephant in the room is NIPPLE TOP! Why, pray fucking tell does she have massive targets on her nipples. When you ignore that bit.. the outfit is kinda cute. The one thing that always bugged me was that the bottom half of it seemed so tonally different. Her socks and boots don't match the rest AT ALL, what happened to the pink and the stripes??! I think the socks might still work if the boots kept the main outfit style since there's still white and black in the rest of her outfit. If you ignore the nipple targets, could've been a lot worse

Chisato Chisato... dear sweet Chisato (hang on a minute...) the second elephant in the room. Give this girl a fucking coat to cover up her body PLEASE. This is probably the most disgusting outfit in Suzune... doesn't help that... Chisato is actually uncomfortable in it! WOW :)))) The whole point of a magical girl's outfit is that it's them, it represents them. Madoka literally drew hers to be what she wanted. Sayaka's is knightly and heroic cause she wants to be a hero. Mami's is fancy and traditional because she's a traditional magical girl. I think the only thing I mildly like is the little jacket but otherwise, a disgrace

Haruka, the blatant Mami copy. Her outfit really could be cute but just like Arisa, it's just not there. First problem, get rid of the boob window, she's 15. Second, how could anyone fight in that skirt? Otherwise, it's pretty cute. A big hooped skirt like Walpurgis' space-y familiar would look so cute on her. Or just give her a ballgown type skirt to fit with her princessy theme.

Matsuri is probably the first girl I actually like from Suzune, wow! She's cute and almost looks like a frog! I just never really liked the massive hands, yeah I get it's her weapon but it just looks ugly and doesn't go with her outfit which is cute and dainty. If she was secretly really violent then yeah, I'd get some big chunking hands. I kinda get that the big hands link to her sight like, she might've been more sensitive to touch before. But I just don't like the massive hands... Tell me if you've got a better idea for her weapon

Kagari, hey hers is cute too. I kinda wish they did more with the butterfly motif though.. and her head just feels empty. Like, make her bow some big wings like Neo Queen Serenity or something.. Or maybe make her outfit look a bit more evil since her wish is literally about the suffering of another. OR make her outfit similar to Tsubaki's since her wish was about her too

Tsubaki..! I love a kimono but... honey you're just wearing a kimono top and hakama pants... It's kinda cute but when looking at other girls with a kimono theme, they're so much nicer. Give me more fire, give me more cherry blossoms, heck, give me more oni (from her doppel) heck heck, give me literal Tsubaki! (Camellias)

Yes we're including Kanami because she's CUTE! Though... she's another pretty basic one... Makes more sense since she's a background character. She looks like a background character... but I wish she had more of a theme.

And yes, I'd rather like to redesign these girls too after the Kazumi ones... I'm looking forward to it..!

Something something DRV3 Chapter 5's trial like Kokichi's plan this whole time made no sense to me. So he's pretending to be the mastermind to throw off the real one...when he doesn't even know Tsumugi's true identity, pretty much gives everyone in the room a reason to kill him (and this DID happen in chapter 4 btw with Miu, rest in peace) and basically causes chaos in general. I don't really get how this was going to benefit anyone in the killing game? And don't even get me started on the "impossible trial" plan...like did he think that Monokuma would just let everyone go...? He'd probably just kill them all and hell he was planning to do JUST THAT until Kaito in the exisal admitted it. The killing games have never been fair in general (coughs When Junko just threw mukuro's body in a field so she could take out Kyoko when Monokuma gave everyone the despair disease out of nowhere the existence of the motives in general) Anyways I've gotta stop here because Im going wild lol ALSO when the fandom does redesigns of the female characters and reduce their chest sizes like isn't that just bodyshaming...

i don't think u can go thru 100 timelines and not experiment a little with pronouns so i just think they/he/she homura is valid. prefers they/them but like doesn't mind other pronouns so much...but they do sometimes. it depends on the day

i haven't designed this but they probably have a bracelet code system for what feels okay on any given day, though they/them is always safe

not necessarily dysphoric but it's kinda hard to sort through where ur depression is coming from sometimes between the billion sources it could come from, u know?

that said they'll sometimes wear like, one of those kinda shit sports bras for compression if they feel like it

they have the sort of complex relationship with masculinity and femininity that comes from both trauma and feeling a little left out of both, but from that vantage point, they also can just pick and choose what they like and vibe with. custom gender built to order no refunds no returns no cancellations

this is one of those things that homura and sayaka can actually talk about because i forgot to mention sayaka is also nonbinary thanks @werewolfcave. that's just canon for me––nonbinary they/them sayaka

for practicality reasons pants are ideal but if they're comfortable enough they'll wear other things. that's mostly around the quintet, who they know won't be weird about it

Okay this one’s actually really tough but I think Kyoko would have a cuter laugh. I think she’d try to hide the fact she’s laughing by burying her face behind her hair and hands but once she gets laughing oh boy it’s so adorable!

2. Who is ticklish in weird places and where would it be?

Kyoko again! I headcannon that she’s really sensitive to soft tickles on the backs of her shoulders and shoulder blades

3. Who gets cheer up tickles?

Both of them! Quite often as well. Makoto would cheer up really quickly while it would take Kyoko a bit longer but they always work.

4. Who takes advantage of the other getting stuck while taking off their T-shirt?

If Makoto got stuck Kyoko would definitely take advantage! Makoko would probably flail around quite a bit which would only cause him to get even more tangled.

5. How did they discover each other’s ticklishness?

Kyoko caught light of it from Sayaka or Aoi and thought to test it out for herself. Needless to say the theories were true. Of course it was only a matter of time before Makoto decided he wanted revenge so he waited for her in his dorm and tackled her from behind the door. It wasn’t very graceful but it was funny to Makoto.

6. Who can’t take tickle bites?

I think Kyoko would often give Makoto tickle bites and he’d absolutely crumble. His laugh would definitely go really high pitched.

7. Who has to be tickle-forced out of bed in the morning?

Makoto again! Kyoko’s usually awake very early so if she gets lonely while Makoto’s still snoring away she’ll tickle him awake. Or if he just won’t get up she’d really let him have it!

8. Who gives up in a tickle fight?

Probably Makoto again to be honest. I think Kyoko would be able to turn the situation in her favour most of the time so she’d almost always have an advantage!

9. Who is in danger of getting hurt when tickling the other?

I think Makoto would definitely flail about and kick a lot, so Kyoko might end up with a couple of knocks. She’s not completely innocent either though! One wrong move and she might accidentally kick Makoto in the leg.

10. Who always provokes the other into tickling them and how?

Obviously Makoto would sometimes mess around just to get her to wreck him by poking her or tapping her phone screen while she’s trying to type, yknow the usual “I’m being a little shit what are you gonna do about it?” sorta stuff, but honestly?? I think Kyoko would too! But I feel like it would be so unimaginably subtle that Makoto doesn’t even realise that’s what she’s trying to do. Or so she thinks. Makoto is completely aware of what she’s doing but he keeps the game going for her sake cause he thinks it’s just really cute.

Honestly this one is so hard I genuinely don’t think I can pick??? Kokichi’s would be loud, with lots of begging and squealing whereas Shuichi’s would be a lot softer, still with a lot of begging and the occasional squeak, but then once you hit his death spot or if you catch him by surprise he can turn into a bubbly mess!

2. Who is ticklish in weird places and what would it be?

I don’t think these are considered ‘weird’ but I think they can still count! Kokichi’s absolute death spot would be under his scarf. Like, his neck is insanely ticklish. As for Shuichi, his palms are unbearable. He’d crumble pretty quickly if you so much as touched them.

3. Who get’s cheer-up tickles?

Shuichi! Whenever Kokichi notices him feeling even a little down he doesn’t even hesitate! There’d definitely be a lot of teasing too

4. Who takes advantage of the other getting stuck taking off their T-shirt?

Kokichi, absolutely. Again, he just wouldn’t hesitate. He’d probably back Shuichi into a corner and just completely wreck him. Shuichi would be too weak to do anything but sit, take it and beg. Kokichi would have to help him out of the T-shirt at the end and he’d throw himself into Shuichi’s lap and give him a big hug.

5. How did they discover each other’s ticklishness?

Honestly??? Kokichi just one day decided to tickle him. Literally for no reason at all, other than to see if Shuichi was ticklish. It was completely by surprise, so poor Shuichi gave in immediately. As for Kokichi, well he was being a little shit so Shuichi tried pushing him away but saw him flinch when he touched his belly so he poked it a few times with the whole “Huuuh? Are you ticklish Kokichi?”. This completely flustered Kokichi who tried to run away but got pulled into a tickly hug.

6. Who can’t take tickle bites?

Kokichi!! His absolute worst spot is his neck so Shuichi would take every opportunity to give him a few nibbles around there which would drive him crazy!!

7. Who has to be tickle-forced out of bed in the morning?

Kokichi again. He’s the kinda guy to not want to get up until like noon, so Shuichi has to take action. He gives him plenty of warnings, which makes Shuichi think he’s just asking for it sometimes. But sometimes on weekends and holidays, Kokichi will get up super early just to get revenge!

8. Who gives up in a tickle fight?

Shuichi! Kokichi would either be super stubborn all round or would do a fake-give-up thing then turn the whole thing around on the detective! Shuichi would give up pretty quickly, but Kokichi would still make sure to push him right to his limit. Shuichi is also very vulnerable to teasing, which makes it so much worse.

9. Who is in danger of getting hurt when tickling the other?

Definitely Shuichi. Kokichi would thrash around like a maniac when being tickled and Shuichi has definitely left a few tickle fights with a bruise or two, non-intentional of course. On the other hand Shuichi becomes a weak mess when he’s tickled, effectively rendered so helpless he can’t even kick.

10. Who always provokes the other into tickling them and how?

Kokichi 1000% and he will use ANY means necessary. From just playfully poking Shuichi to throwing his stuff on the floor to embarrassing him a little at school to giving his dorm a complete redesign. Shuichi is super patient so it might take a while but when he loses his cool boy he LOSES IT and will absolutely wreck Kokichi.

Redesigning DR Characters So They Look Like High Schoolers and Their Talents

Part 1: Trigger Happy Havoc

Makoto Naegi: I gave him a dark green hoodie with red and white lines around the cuffs, zipper area, and border of the hood. He also wears a white polo shirt, tan sweater vest with the symbol of his old school on the breast, green plaid skirt, and white leg warmers alongside red sneakers. He also carries a brown backpack because I can and I will.

Byakuya Togami: Don’t worry he has a better haircut here. He wears a navy blue blazer with gold lining along the lapel and pocket areas, black dress shirt, dark green sweater vest and ribbon tie, navy blue dress pants, a Gucci belt, and black dress shoes. He also wears a pair of white gloves, an expensive watch, and a few rings. The symbol of his school is on his lapel.

Kyoko Kirigiri: I think she deserves to look like a detective a little bit. I decided to mix the blazer and trenchcoat to give her the student and girlboss vibes. She wears a dark purple trenchcoat blazer with gold buttons and a matching dark purple belt, white dress shirt, dark orange tie, indigo dress pants, and her canon boots. She can keep her gloves.

Aoi Asahina: She wears a dark navy sukumizu (school issued swimsuit) with white lining, teal blue goggles, red varsity jacket with the symbol of their school on the breast and their last name on the back, sea blue mermaid scale gym shorts, knee brace, and a pair of white sneakers.

Toko Fukawa: She wears a royal purple blazer with the symbol of their school on the breast pocket and a pin on their lapel that looks like Kameko, black polo shirt, coral seifuku tie, long black pleated skirt, white dress socks, and black Mary Janes. Toko also carries a bag around with them bc I say so.

Yasuhiro Hagakure: They wear a a black jacket with their school crest on the back, white dress shirt that’s unbuttoned, dirty yellow undershirt, black dress pants, and slippers. 

Sayaka Maizono: I think she can look like an idol and a schoolgirl at the same time. She wears a white dress shirt with the crest of her school on each sleeve, baby blue strapless bustier top, pink bow tie, and high waisted plaid blue skirt. She also wears a sky blue sweater wrapped around her neck, a pair of dark blue stockings, and white dress shoes with straps.

Mukuro Ikusaba: Since I gave him the talent of Ultimate Hunter if I were to keep the cast in high school, he wears a baggy white dress shirt, green undershirt, camo pants, and hunting boots. He also wears a black jacket over it.

Leon Kuwata: He wears a black blazer with some chains and pins, a baseball jersey underneath, untied red pinstripe tie, plaid pants, studded belt, and Doc Martens.

Chihiro Fujisaki: She wears a white dress shirt with a collar like the one from her canon outfit, dark green ribbon tie, brown sweater vest, cream sweater with the crest of her school and little computer pins on it, black pleated skirt, tights, and brown Mary Jane shoes. She also wears a pair of light green headphones and carries around a black computer bag.

Mondo Oowada: He wears the black Crazy Diamonds jacket, black t-shirt with dragons on it, puffy black pants, and black loafers.

Kiyotaka Ishimaru: He keeps his canon uniform with a few adjustments, he has more badges, a tie, and sweater vest.

Hifumi Yamada: He wears a orange sweater with anime pins, white dress shirt, gray sweater vest, orange tie with a blue arrow, black pinstripe dress pants, and a pair of sneakers.

Celestia Ludenberg: She wears a black blazer with a gold lapel chain and ruby card suit shaped pins, white dress shirt, red skirt with white frills and card suits, pink petticoats, black stockings with white frills, and red heels.

Sakura Oogami: She wears a white gi with pink lining and floral patterns as well as the crest of her school on the back. She also wears her Mary Jane shoes.

Junko Enoshima: She wears a pink sweater, red plaid bow tie, monochrome dress shirt, red plaid skirt with black lace hemming, white leg warmers, and red Mary Janes.

Komaru Naegi: She wears a sky blue pullover hoodie with cloud and rainbow designs, white seifuku uniform with a purple collar that has white lining, red tie, purple pleated skirt, black socks, and a pair of sneakers.

I actually made a sprite for Michiko, my danganronpa s/i! I redesigned her a little bit too, but I mostly just gave her band-aids and a little thing on her knee. (Note: I absolutely traced Sayaka and Asahina in order to make this, don't overestimate my art abilities lol)

She's the Ultimate Artist! She has a hard time understanding and talking people socially, but she can understand them artistically. One of her best skills is learning someone's interests and daily life, and then be able to make a painting that represents them

Wears a drawing glove at all times, and always wears a yellow ring bracelet on her left wrist, as to not disturb her drawing hand

Often hurts herself due to her clumsy nature, she also refuses to use anything else besides purple band-aids to cover them up.

Autistic, her beanie being a comfort item (Bonus: she flaps her arms when excited or very happy)

She's pretty much a loner, but does hang out with Hina and Sakura when able
