Oohh the reaction demon Neil had about his father. Huuu, powerful. I'm giddy every time I read either of these works. I've also been rly enjoying Mer AU. Are they ever going to swim together? WIP Wednesday (10/30) | Guardian Angel Neil AU (Part 250)

Andrew's barely finished his question when Neil gets a devious look on his face. Without warning, the angel scoots impossibly forward and crosses his arms in front of him. He kicks off against the side of the building and then he's falling. Andrew grabs for him but it’s too late. His stomach falls with Neil and Andrew scrambles back from the edge of the roof, his heart in his throat.

"NEIL?" Andrew shouts, on hands and knees. There's the sound of enormous wings flapping. Once, twice. Three times. And Neil is there, ten feet away with only his wings holding him up. Andrew's mouth falls open and he moves to sit normally, in awe of the image before him. Neil maintains his hover for a moment, then grins and shoots up into the sky.

A burst of air comes off his wings and flutters Andrew's hair, caresses his face. He watches, looking up, up, up, as Neil soars. He becomes impossibly small the higher he gets, until it seem he's about to disappear. But he doesn't. Andrew watches him make figure-8s up in the sky, leaving contrails in his wake. It's almost like skywriting.

Andrew almost shouts for him to draw something, but doesn't. Instead he just watches in amazement until Neil closes his wings and free-falls towards the parking lot before catching himself and lifting back up until he's able to step onto the roof again. As his feet hit the ground, Andrew's heart leaps. Neil is all smiles and ruddy cheeks and wings.

"That answer your question?" He asks, clearly winded.

Andrew nods, still mesmerized. Somewhere in the back of his mind he wants to bitch at Neil for scaring him like that, but before he can a ring of light appears over Neil's head. It's twice as bright as his wings and Andrew can't look away from it.

He stares up at the angel, completely mesmerized. A wave of happiness and calm rolls over him, unlike anything he's ever felt in his life. It's like being high, but a thousand times better. He feels a smile spread across his face and it's not prescription. It's a real smile.

Neil smiles back and the light gets ever brighter.

"You're so shiny," Andrew whispers, feeling tears prick the corners of his eyes. He blinks to let them fall and new ones take their place. He hardly notices. "So shiny and beautiful."

"Andrew?" The light says, sounding concerned. It shouldn't sound upset. Nothing's wrong. "Andrew, are you alright?"

"...Angel?" Andrew cocks his head to the side. But what's the angel's name? It was right on the tip of his tongue. He thinks.

Wait. What's his name? Does he have one? He thinks so. It's Andrew. That's what the angel called him. It must be right. The angel must be right.

"Andrew? Andrew, hey, snap out of it." The angel says, a panicked edge to his voice. Andrew barely hears him. There's a gasp and a curse and a 'stop!' then all the light disappears with a poof of feathers. At last, the spell breaks and Andrew blinks himself awake just as Neil drops to his knees in front of him. "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. Are you okay?"

Andrew is suddenly disoriented. He feels like he's been yanked out of a dream. A horribly perfect nightmare. Something like adrenaline has his pulse kicking into overdrive and his chest aching like he just ran ten miles.

"Andrew, answer me. You have to answer me. Are you alright?"

Andrew manages a nod.

"With words, Andrew. Words." Neil says. And Andrew blinks hard, then rubs his eyes to find them embarrassingly wet. He roughly wipes his face with his sleeve and clears his throat until he feels confident his voice won't break.

"Yes. I'm fine."

"Fuck, you're not. Can you see?"

"I..." Andrew can't see. Not really. There's a vague outline that's probably Neil, but everything's too bright. Like he'd stared at the sun too long.

"Happy birthday, Andrew," Neil says in a panic. "Fuck. I have to go now. I hope you get that cake you wanted."

"No, don't," Andrew blinks hard and reaches for him. "Neil. Stay, I— Wait, pl—" The Neil-shape vanishes before he can start to beg and Andrew drops his head into his hands, eyes still burning.

the sun still rises by mordax (basically a rewrite of the series except neil has a little brother to take care of. very canon compliant which is what i like. andrew pov in this is delicious and very well-written imo. neil isn't ENTIRELY biblically accurate but i wouldn't expect him to be because he's literally taking care of a child in this one so i think that's def going to change things. slowburn andreil the way we like it and they have rlly great chemistry)

Kevin looks like Wymack.

You put them side by side and actually try to pay attention to them, and after a while it's one of those things you can't unsee once you've seen it.

Sure, he has his mother's black hair and dark, intense green eyes. But everything else? Wymack. His tanned skin, his buff, muscular build; his face structure, with big eyebrows and strong nose and deep set eyes and full lips; his hands and ears and his wavy hair, too, even if Wymack doesn't keep it as long anymore.

If Kevin let his beard grow, all you'd see would be Wymack, if a little to the left; younger, with different colors and a bit more hair. No wrinkles or white hairs, just yet.

If you saw pictures of a younger Wymack, all you'd see would be Kevin. Kevin, with brown hair and brown eyes, the same wavy hair, if a little longer, maybe. This is specially true the younger you go. You put pictures of them as children and the grainy and faded quality of David's makes them look like the exact same kid. All the way down to similar mole placements.

Well. Except two of them.

Two small moles. Sitting one right next to the other, at the corner of Kevin's left eye. Those were Kayleigh's. They were one of Wymack's favourite places to kiss her.

It's been so long nearly nobody remembers he had them in the first place. But Kevin remembers. Kevin could never forget.

Riko used to say they were the perfect placement, back when they were still kids and would use markers to doodle the numbers on their faces. He would use them as guidelines, putting each line of the roman numeral over each mole. Riko liked them because then they would always know where to put the mark and he could use them as a reference for his own.

He also liked to joke, telling Kevin all about how they were a sign. A sign that everything was always meant to be like this, a sign that Kevin was always meant to be his second.

Kevin didn't exactly know how to feel about that. He didn't mind the idea of tattoos that much, but he felt odd whenever he looked at a mirror and couldn't see his mother's moles. Alas, it made Riko happy, and if Riko was happy, then Kevin had to be, too. If he tried hard enough, he could even convince himself that his mother would be proud. After all, it meant he was one of the best in the game, and wasn't that a good thing? All people had to do was look at his face and they would know immediately.

And anyways, it was just marker. It would fade eventually and his moles would still be there.

Except.

Then it wasn't just marker anymore, was it? It was ink. Permanent, at the corner of his left eye. Each line of the roman numeral forever covering each mole. The perfect placement, the perfect guidelines. A sign.

And it wasn't like they were the only connection he had with her, the only thing left behind.

He still had his mother's eyes. He still had his mother's hair. He still had Exy and her drive and her passion and her legacy and all the expectations that came with it.

And yet he was also aware that none of those things could ever truly replace her. That doesn't mean he didn't try, though.

Therefore, when he lost the moles, as small as they were, he couldn't help but feel as though he was loosing a key part of himself. That the space inside of him, the one with her exact shape, the one left empty by her death, the one he's spent his entire life desperately trying to fill with all the ill-fitting things she left behind, sat a little bit emptier now.

So, yeah. It's been a long time, but Kevin remembers.

Now, having a Queen instead might not be as good as having his moles back, but this, at the very least, he doesn't need convincing to know his mother would be proud of.

This, at the very least, doesn't feel as empty.

Hidihi here for Kevin talk bc I always think abt Kevin. This turned out a bit longer than expected but it’s also been incessantly stirring in my mind. So. Here you go

One of the things that honestly endears me the most to him is his optimism/faith in people. It’s not obvious in the way Renee’s is or Jeremy’s, but at the same time it is right there in the text:

He fully believes Andrew can be something if only he would just give in and admit it and he is 100% willing to bring it out of him. the same counts for Neil and honestly also the Foxes although he never tells them directly (he tells others and then he starts critiquing their every move)

He fully believed Wymack would help and take him in despite the fact that he lived with Riko and Jean whose fathers did not give two shits about them AND also lived with Tetsuji (who was supposed to be a kind of father figure besides just his coach) and the other Raven coaches and thus probably had at least some distrust of coaches

Obviously his obsession/appreciation of the Trojans despite living 10 years in the exact opposite environment where such sportsmanship was actively discouraged and ridiculed. And then he also sent Jean, whom Kevin knows is just waiting for his (Kevin’s) death so he (Jean) can follow him, to the Trojans because he trusted they would provide Jean the kindness he needed to start healing (perhaps that seed was started by what he knew of Renee and Jean’s talks? He saw how effective she was on him and thought ‘what about a whole team of that’??)

Hell, even the way he is about Riko shows how much he just believes in people, although I am basing this on extra content stuffs. Basically it says that he did not want Riko to die/wanted to see the Riko post-canon because he wanted to see who Riko could be without all the bad stuff—basically a loop of ‘but what if what if what if’ with a side of ‘I can fix him’ situation though I am very much paraphrasing (possibly to the extent that there could be other interpretations but so far my memory’s served me pretty well. A double check would probably be advised though)

Personally I think it’s the remnants of Kayleigh—I feel like there’s a good reason why it’s called the Kayleigh Day spirits award besides the fact that she’s important to the sport and dead (e.g. why name the spirits award specifically after her? Why not another prize?). He was only with her for a short time, but maybe they were enough to teach him that believing in people was not a worthless pursuit—would in fact foster success. She seems to me the only logical place where he could have picked that up because it definitely wasn’t the Ravens nor his history books as history is not as filled with kind people and acts of kindness getting paid off as one might hope. At least not mainstream history that focuses broadly on politics and military affairs

Maybe part of his conviction comes from his arrogance and confidence: he isn’t likely to doubt himself or quick to admit to being wrong and the fact that he applies this to people the most (at least as far as we see in canon) is honestly so fun to see because it subverts the entire stereotype.

Anyway. he makes me insane

YESYESYES all of this Kevin is so much more than just a two dimensional asshole who only cares about exy and like yeah. that’s a large part of his personality but like.

he truly truly believes in Andrew’s healing. he believes in him and his talent. and is a part of it selfish? because he feels like he can benefit from his talent when he views exy as “his”? maybe!!!!! but i think if he didn’t actually care about him or the other foxes and how they played he wouldn’t be so passionate about it. he SEES their potential!!! and believes they can all be be better!!!

he trusts people and believes in him and still knows that there’s good people in the world and even when he’s only ever been faced with bad people with bad intentions and bad hearts he still believes in the good people out there. he wanted to die but his heart still blindly trusted Wymack (basically a stranger to him at that point)

i think another reason i would truly love to see a session between Kevin and Bee is because we know how much heart he does have beneath all that assholery. maybe it’s not traditional or the way people want to see it but he believes in people, he believes in the good of people, he trusts and he has all these feelings that he still allows himself to have, after all this time, after all the bad things that have happened to him

and don’t even get me STARTED on how much of Kayleigh must be in him.

Hello esteemed mutual. If you are reading this, then that means my propaganda is working. But you might still have questions, so I am here to answer them. And also, it is my duty to report back on it, because this game was chosen by you, my mutuals. It shows that democracy is still valuable in 2024, despite the world trying to prove us otherwise.

What is Cassette Beasts?

Cassette Beasts is a monster taming/creature collecting game developed by Bytten Studio. You play as the Player (who obviously can be named), who washes up on the shore of an island called New Wirral, which is located in a different dimension. There's only one issue: there is no way home. People from all different worlds and times end up in New Wirral and no one knows why. Another interesting thing is that New Wirral is inhabited by all kinds of monsters, but luckily, humans have found a way to beat them. These monsters are recordable and you can copy them to cassette tapes. Humans then use these cassette tapes to turn into a copy of those monsters, allowing humans to fight wild monsters and battle other humans.

The Player has to adjust to life on New Wirral, but is certain that there must be a way home. Together with their new friend Kayleigh, they go to investigate and learn that there are bosses called Archangels, and defeating them might lead to a way home. During your journey, you meet a lot of different Partner characters with their own storylines, and you are able to explore the open world of New Wirral.

What makes this game so different from others in the genre?

I'm going to be upfront: I don't have a lot of experience with creature collection/monster taming games. I have only played Pokémon, Ooblets, and also Persona. For Persona the creature collection is only a part of a bigger game, and in Ooblets you dance battle against the creatures in order to grow them in your garden. So yeah, I can only compare it to those.

I think the thing that immediately cements this as something different from Pokémon is that this game focuses a lot on the bond between humans, not between humans and monsters. That's not to say that you cannot get attached to your tapes (I did), but YOU turn into the monsters. As a result, monsters don't have their own levels, they instead take on the Player's level. This, to me, was game changing! This means that basically every tape is useful, no matter when you recorded it. Oh, you recorded a level 01 Traffikrab in the beginning of the game? Well, if you're level 80 at the end of the game and use that tape, you bet your ass Traffikrab is level 80 as well. This also makes it more exciting to actually record all the beasts in this game (which I did, I finished yesterday!)

BY THE WAY, did you know that once you're in the process of recording a monster, it cannot be killed! Gone are the fears of accidentally killing the monster you want to catch! Recording in general is more advanced than just throwing a tape at them and hoping for the best. There's strategy to it. You'll see. You will want to catch 'em all.

Which leads me to the second cool part: remastering. When your tape reaches 5 starts, it can be remastered (aka evolved) into a better tape. Not all tapes can be remastered, but some beasts can only be found through remastering! Not only that, but some tapes have branching paths as well, where a tape remasters into a certain monster depending on the time, moveset or an answer to a question.

And that leads me to another core feature of Cassette Beasts: fusions. Every monster has the ability to fuse with another monster. The devs say that this means that there are around 14.400 fusions available in this game, and that's not even accurate, because this number doesn't include the new monsters added in v1.2, v1.5 and the DLC! And the number is even higher if you take into account that EVERY SINGLE MONSTER has the ability to be a bootleg. A bootleg is basically a shiny, so it has a different colour scheme, but it also impacts the typing of the monster and they have a chance of getting better moves. There are 14 types (more on that later), which means that technically every monster can have 14 variants, which lead to differently typed fusions as well. Bro. What the FUCK.

Fusing monsters makes you more powerful, but it also means you only get one chance to act per move, instead of two. Fused monsters merge their stats and movesets, and they generate more AP per turn. AP is the amount of points you need to use a move, like of like PP in Pokémon.

AP? Moves? Moves take the forms of stickers that you put on your tapes. You can peel and replace those stickers whenever you want. Not all stickers are compatible with all monsters, though, and the more stars your tape has, the more sticker slots it has. Yup, your movesets are customisable. Neat.

And remember those 14 types? They are: water, earth, fire, air, beast, astral, ice, lightning, metal, plant, plastic, poison, glass and glitter. Yes, they're neat. Instead of having classic type advantages and disadvantages, types are all about buffs and debuffs. These are based on reality. For example, a fire type attacking an air type creates an updraft, buffing the air type. An ice type attacking a water type turns the water type into another ice type by freezing it. A lightning type attacking a metal type makes the latter conductive and vulnerable to extra damage from electricity. A poison type disturbs an astral type by attacking it, turning the astral type beserk. And so on, and so on. You can take advantage of this by also changing your types in battle with certain moves, but the enemy can also force you to change types. It's a whole thing, man.

This game is also made for people who love the genre. Once you finish the main game, there's a big post-game, but also an option to create a new custom save file with a permadeath mode (like a nuzzlock), or with randomised monsters or randomised types or randomised moves. It's a reason people come back to it.

Wow. Okay. That's a lot.

It is. Luckily, you can reread all tutorials in game in your Ranger Handbook. It even has a type chart! And there's the official wiki with a lot of information (and a lot of mathematical formulas).

But yeah, this game is massive, not only gameplay wise, but also storyline wise. You have the main story of getting off the island, but as I said, all playable NPCs (Partners) have their own storyline too (like fighting landlords or finding a lost brother). Then there's a "gym leader" type of storyline, where you take on Captains who are spread around the overworld, and there are a lot of side quests and rumours to follow up on.

And this is all in a decently sized open world. You do need to unlock overworld abilities that make exploration much easier, and the game has to load in the rest of the world at times. But yeah there are NPC battles and caves to be explored and chests to be opened. There are overworld puzzles to figure out! It IS a lot.

Where can I play this?

Cassette Beasts is available on PC and Xbox Game Pass, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. The wiki says it's also coming to mobile, but be honest with me, why would anyone buy a non-mobile game on mobile, especially something as extensive as this? Nah.

Can we play together?

Yup! I think it's cross-platform, but don't quote me on that. I haven't played multiplayer yet, so I cannot talk about it, but I know there are some exclusive features there. I think.

Is there DLC?

Yup, the Pier of the Unknown DLC adds a new area to explore, a new quest, new bosses, new monsters (so in turn also new fusions). I thought it was just fine. It adds some lore and all that, but it's just fine. I don't think I would've missed it if I hadn't bought it on sale. I recommend it if it's on sale.

Are there German characters in Cassette Beasts?

Given the fact that the inhabitants of New Wirral can come from all over the universe, it's possible there is someone from Germany residing on the island. But no, none of the playable NPCs or supporting cast is German.

Do you have any favourite costume mashups that were worn on stage?

If you mean specific goofs that were done to the costumes, then yes. A forever favourite is probably for a West End muckup matinée, where a male dancer donned the Hannibal slavegirl costume and a random gold mask. These things are rarely documented, so I'm extra glad actual footage exist:

And maybe not as much mash-up as humorous, but fake tattoos for the final performances will always be fun. Kevin Gray's Miss Saigon deformity tattoo in the US Tour and Tomas Ambt Kofod's Christine-heart-sailor-tattoo in Copenhagen are two favourites:

If you mean different styles of costumes or different costume parts being mixed up... I found the combo of a very vintage UK Elissa skirt with a newer US bodice an interesting one. It was worn in the Restaged Tour, I wanna say Lyndsay O'Neill? Similar combos was worn by the other understudies too, including Katie McCreary, Carmen Vass and Sarah Mossman.

And I am very much in love with Cai Min's combo of the Paris bodice and West End skirt in the Chinese production. The bodice never got a good match in the previous World Tour, with either too dark or too pale skirt. This is a nice match, and a well balanced costume:

Oh yeah, and the very vintage Dutch bodice with newer German skirts, as seen on Giulia Nadruz and the other Christines in the Sao Paulo revival... That's a combo I love:

And even if you didn't ask about my least favourites... HARD NO on this combo of a flat mint bodice and structured pink skirt, as seen on Kayleigh Marven in the Restaged Aussie Tour:

Also hard no on the oh-we-forgot-to-decorate-the-apron UK skirt with a US bodice, as worn by Kaley Ann Voorhees and Claire Lyon in the previous World Tour. Glad they decorated it in China... Here's the before look, as worn by Kaley Ann Voorhees:

...and after, as worn by Yang Chengxiyi. It feels like a more balanced costume, as there is a sense of continuation from bodice to skirt. Definite yes on this one!

Also hard yes to Emmi Christensson's Stockholm revival rooftop look, which was a true mask-up of a West End dress with World Tour decorations, World Tour cloak and World Tour underpinnings. The total is quite awesome.

For the first time in years all the Fosters had lain down to sleep under one roof. Harvey and Kayleigh enjoyed having a large family. For the most part everyone got along well, the girls were especially close. Carson and Reece liked to get on each others nerves of course but at the end of the day they were family. Kill each other, kill for each other, it was a narrow line.

Marta: Buenos Diaz

Reece: Morning Marta

Marta: You cooking?

Reece: For Samir, he likes meat in the mornings

Marta: I saw him eating veges Harvey prepped

Reece: Yeah he’s also a fan of seconds, and thirds. He's a bit of a glutton but I love him

Inside Harvey and Kayleigh were trying to talk to Samir but despite his conversation the previous evening Samir still wasn’t much of a talker, choosing to nod and murmur most of the time.

Keira: Why did you cook if you’re having sushi?

Reece: I look after my partner, but we hardly ever eat the same thing

Carson decided to listen to his siblings, but maybe not right away. At school he worked on the mural before class while Ariadne took time skating. Sure Carson could have joined her but he’d promised himself the next time he saw her he’d ask her out properly, and he really didn’t want to do that while flailing about on ice. He got to class early and composed a text to her before Mrs H could yell at them about phones.

Hey Ariadne, sorry I didn’t catch you this morning but I’d like to chat at lunch? I’ll be upstairs if you want to chat but no pressure. Enjoy gym class

When the time came he raced upstairs. She wasn’t there so he sat and tried to remember a breathing exercise Chad had taught him.

Ariadne: Carson?

Carson: Hi! Oh you look really nice

As she thanked him he reached for her hands again, happy that she didn’t pull back.

Carson: So I was thinking about when we went swimming together and I had a really good time

Ariadne: So did I

Carson: Would you like to do it again? Not like swimming but there’s stuff in town here

Carson felt his chest tighten as she pulled out her phone and flicked through it. This was it. She was going to reveal she'd been recording him and his awful attempt at romance would be uploaded and go viral and then he'd die of embarrassment-

Ariadne: Ah, just like I thought. I’m completely free anytime

She burst in to giggles and Carson let out some nervous laughter.

Carson: Was that completely necessary

Ariadne: I’m sorry, you just looked so serious

Carson: I- I just get worried

Ariadne pulls him in for a hug and he likes how it feels. Maybe hugging could be okay.

Ariadne: I didn’t meant to make you worry. I’d like to go on a date with you Carson. What did you have in mind

She pulls out of the hug but takes hold of his hand, giving a reassuring squeeze.

Carson: Well we could check out that shop in town that’s like a bubble tea place and a clothes place

Ariadne: Sure. Collect me after class okay?

Carson: Yeah, I’m looking forward to it

Carson’s afternoon class went by slowly, he was busy thinking about the date. A proper date! And she’d said yes. Now, how to not stuff it up...

Okay i have thoughts that have been knawing at me and as a fellow irish person i feel you might understand. 1980s conservative catholic ireland vs single unmarried mother Kayleigh who is unapologetically herself.

Did her family disown her? Did they hate that their daughter wanted a career and a life instead of just settling down and getting married? Did Kayleigh stuggle with her Catholicism in the face of comminting what was considered one of the worse things you could do? Kevin deciding to go look for his Irish family; would they even want to engage with him; instead thinking he was a stain on their family, a mistake or would they view him as a chance to redeem themselves in hindsight of how they treated Kayleigh.

Like the last Magdalene Laundry was closed in 1996. (Which has caused me to cook up an insane AU idea)

I feel some of this is very dependent on if Kayleigh was raised rurally or in a town/city as well maybe.

it’d make sense as to why Kevin has very little to no connection to his extended family if Kayleigh herself was actually from a very traditionally catholic family around that time? you have her going to university (not super normal) and then having a child out of wedlock “not knowing” who the father was? yeah i could see it

it’d be an interesting au to see 1) Kayleigh’s family making up for how they disowned her for having Kevin by taking him in and loving him with everything they have because he’s all that’s left of their daughter/sister/whatever or 2) them wanting nothing to do with him because they’re still very traditional and don’t want to associate with their daughters “bastard” child.
