I think a really interesting phenomenon on these polls generally is like. the numbers versus the magnitude if that makes sense. like clearly there is a contingent here of people who want Claude Rains to win things and are at times very vocal and passionate, but he can’t win. I feel like I also saw this a lot in the main polls where there would be one person who had like a ton of very passionate propaganda and was losing to somebody who yeah had propaganda but like. less of it. it’s like the people who know and like Claude absolutely love Claude, but to the layperson he doesn’t have an immediate appeal? idk this isn’t to say anything really it’s just kind of weird and neat.
Yes! I've noticed that too. I've wondered how it will impact the scrungly little guys contest, which is rooted very much in lesser-known character actors and niche performers who don't have the recognition of your Liz Taylors and Veronica Lakes. I'm hoping people will watch the videos and read the propaganda before voting for their scrungles, but we'll see.

Tumblr is the dungeon of social media platforms. The user base it attracts is a very… niche one which makes it quite literally the only platform where Greencels can openly and loudly congregate without an external general audience catching wind and completely descending on them for how vile it is to be a genuine supporter of TG.
HBO has put out multiple TB vs TG polls on various social media platforms and every time TB wins by a landslide by almost 80%+ each time. TB are the worldwide favourites. Greencels are in fact a very small but, unfortunately very loud and deluded group of troglodytes.
Hess and Condal can try as much as they like to make the audience turn against TB but it won’t happen. They can bend Daemon’s character as much as they want and try to use him to ‘even out’ the playing field but, it won’t matter. It never will. Is it disappointing? Absolutely. But, it doesn’t change the fact that Rhaenyra is the named heir, the usurped, the wronged party - not Daemon. General audiences are ultimately rooting for Rhaenyra, not Daemon (and certainly not that rapist and his rape apologist mother who usurped her).
"Greencels?" Ha, I love it.
I was wondering that in all official polls TB wins, in user polls on Twitter and YT also, TB trailers have more views and more votes 👍, but on Tumblr subsequent TG pro accounts are hatching like larvae. (Larvae, because I believe that something sensible will grow out of them in the future, although maybe I'm too deluded…) So maybe you're right that it's just a place that attracts strange people.

I have to speak up about Gideon Nav of the Locked Tomb series losing to Katya from the slightly overrated film Goncharov (1973) in the Tumblrwoman poll. What I say may be hard to hear. Some will say I’m too harsh. But I REFUSE to be silenced. Gideon’s loss is truly the essence of tumblr. Katya is a slim, white femme character who sits safely in the realm of subtext and who are created for cis straight consumption by cis straight men. Meanwhile, Gideon is butch, Gideon is mixed Maori, Gideon is muscular, Gideon is horny, Gideon is messy and flawed and unapologetic, Gideon is created by a lesbian and is very much for the gays. All these things are what Tumblr claims to want, claims to crave, yet they don’t turn out to support her when it counts. They only have room in their hearts for the Katyas.
We venerate men like Matteo JWHJ0715 and Scorsese for throwing us a bone, talk about how ‘brave’ and against the mainstream they were (ignoring any of the textually queer stories from their era in the meantime) yet with modern queer creators we don’t turn up to support them. (I know some like to believe Matteo is gay and/or trans but we have no idea if that’s not wishful thinking, and yes I know I have privilege he doesn’t thanks to his license plate parentage too but please focus on my point). Instead creators like Muir get harassed, dissected, and even have their characters lose niche polls that ultimately don’t matter. I love Katya, but I have to acknowledge she wouldn’t be as popular if she were like Gideon. Just look at all the final eight, they are all pale, or even worse, homestuck (yes i know about tlt and homestuck don’t @ me unless you want a very long essay about why I’m right). Note the lack of butches.
We cling to nostalgia, to the subtext of the 70s and deify the straight men…meanwhile we crucify and ignore queer creators. The femme who dies prettily with barely a bloodstain will always be more palatable than the butch who [SPOILERS THAT ARE GROSS AND MUCH COOLER]. What’s more tumblr than that, truly.
Wait what do you mean Katya was defeated by Vr
(feel free to mock/play debate about this, rp is fun, i probs won’t respond, but please don’t actually get aggressive with me or message me thanks. Also see the post that started it all here! )

this poll has so many of my horrible niche interests this is amazing
also in like. the tiniest defense of ota from kbtbb ALL but like three of the ro’s do buy you off the black market (it’s a team effort bc humans aren’t meant to be sold in the black market hotel ring ackshually 🤓 so the whole team pools together to buy you 💀 [and eisuke runs the damn thing which is objectively worse])
also one of the ro’s who doesn’t buy you is a black market doctor who’s obsessed w ur bones, and ur kids from other routes?, like *loves* ur collar bones and it’s weird. the other two are like. an accountant or some shit and a clown
it’s a weird game and i spent way too many years obsessed lmao

Hey, so I read your posts about Kiba being unreasonably hated by the fandom, and I wanted to let you know, that while true, Kiba is still massively popular, in the popularity polls. He's like, always in the top 15/to top 20 most popular characters overall, so at least he does get lots of love, to balance out the minority who hate him for no reason. A character who gets real hate for no reason at all, despite being massively cool and underrated, and doesn’t get near enough love to compensate for all the hate he gets is Kankuro. I literally wish for Kankuro to be half as loved as Kiba is in the fandom, but what we gonna do.
idk i've always seen kiba being hated more than loved. might have just been my personal experience, but ppl drag him all the time and they drag his fans too. he's also really popular to portray the "villain" in fanfiction, as in the toxic ex bf, or the cheating s/o or whatever..... authors tend to make him sleazy and gross, even if it necessarily doesn't contribute to the story at all, and it's done just because they don't like him. not that that's wrong, it's completely their choice cos it's their story, but eh.....
like for example, i read this one naruto and sasuke x reader fic a while back. reader went out on a date with kiba cos those two were being morons, and instead of having him be normal and in character, he was just plain creepy so that nart and sasuke could have ended up looking good in the end. and i've seen plenty of fics make him the bad guy constantly so the love interest can make you go wowwww........ i usually stop reading them as soon as the pattern starts lol
also the constant comments that he's useless are rly ehhhhh (i mean by that standard, besides naruto and a few others in shippuden, aren't they all useless, let's be honest? most of 'em were pretty much forgotten lol)
and yeah, i think both kiba and kankuro could be considered niche. while kiba's fandom might be a bit bigger cos he's from konoha and one of the OG 12, i was baffled when i could barely find any fics about him when i joined the fandom 2 yrs ago. ppl who simp for that guy™️ that barely has any screentime have it rough, ik.
so i decided to make my own stories, and am still writing them. i wrote so many one-shots, drabbles, idk what. wrote a 130k book about him. i commission art. i support ppl who write about him/draw him. i make content, encourage others to make it and pay for it too, because i wanna see my comfort character in bigger amounts that canon failed to give me.
i guess my advice is that you can do that as well if you wanna see more of your favourite boy. produce the content you wanna see, self-indulgent stuff is fun and good for the heart <3

Why User Feedback is Key for Your App's Success
In the dynamic landscape of mobile app development, achieving success is not just about innovative features or flawless functionality. One of the most crucial, yet often overlooked, components of an app’s journey from concept to success is user feedback. Leveraging the insights and opinions of real users can transform an app, not only helping developers understand what works but also shedding light on areas that need improvement. Whether the app targets a niche audience or aims to serve millions, user feedback is invaluable in fostering engagement, loyalty, and long-term success.
Understanding the Importance of User Feedback User feedback acts as a mirror, reflecting the app's true performance from the user’s perspective. It helps developers gain a clear picture of what users enjoy, find useful, or, on the flip side, what irritates them about the app. The key benefits of prioritizing user feedback in mobile app development include:
Guiding Product Improvement: User feedback provides actionable insights into the app's strengths and weaknesses. By understanding where the app excels and where it falls short, developers can make necessary adjustments, enhancing features that users love and refining or removing features that create friction.
Enhancing User Experience: In an age where competition is intense, a smooth user experience is one of the most distinguishing factors. When developers take user feedback seriously, they can create an interface that not only appeals to users aesthetically but also functions seamlessly. Users value ease of use, efficiency, and a design that feels intuitive, and feedback from real users is critical in achieving this.
Reducing Uninstalls: One of the greatest fears for mobile app developers is the uninstall rate. When users leave constructive feedback and see that their opinions matter, they’re more likely to give the app another chance rather than simply uninstalling it. Constantly updating and enhancing the app based on user feedback can significantly reduce churn, creating a more loyal user base.
Building Customer Loyalty and Trust: Users who feel heard and see their feedback making a difference in the app are likely to be more loyal. This loyalty is not just about retaining users but turning them into brand advocates. When users feel connected to the development process, they’re more likely to recommend the app to others, giving it organic growth through positive word-of-mouth.
Boosting App Store Ratings and Reviews: Positive app store ratings are critical for visibility and downloads. When developers listen to user feedback and act on it, users are more inclined to leave positive reviews, boosting the app’s rating. An app with consistent updates that reflect user feedback shows potential new users that it’s actively maintained and improved upon, increasing its credibility.
Channels to Collect User Feedback Effectively Collecting user feedback doesn’t have to be complicated or intrusive. Here are some of the most effective ways to gather and interpret feedback:
In-App Surveys and Polls: Integrating short surveys or polls directly within the app is one of the simplest ways to capture user feedback. These should be concise and focused on specific areas of the app. For example, asking users to rate a newly added feature or their overall experience with the app’s navigation can yield targeted insights.
App Store Reviews and Ratings: Reviews on the App Store or Google Play Store are often the first stop for feedback. While some users might leave overly positive or negative comments, looking for recurring themes can reveal actionable insights. Responding to these reviews shows users that their input is valued and appreciated, further motivating others to provide constructive feedback.
Email Feedback Requests: Reaching out to users via email can be a valuable way to get feedback, especially if the app has a specific group of power users. Emails allow for more open-ended questions, enabling users to explain their experiences in detail, which often yields deeper insights than a simple rating system.
Social Media Channels: Platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram are where users frequently share their experiences with apps. Monitoring these channels for mentions and creating posts that encourage feedback can help developers stay connected with users on a more personal level, understanding issues or praises that might not appear in formal feedback channels.
User Testing and Focus Groups: For new features or major updates, beta testing with a focus group or a small user segment allows developers to gather feedback before the changes go live. This pre-release feedback can prevent issues that could lead to poor user experience and negative reviews once the update is widely available.
How to Act on User Feedback Simply gathering feedback is not enough; how developers act on this feedback determines the success of a mobile app. Here are steps to effectively use user feedback to improve the app:
Identify Patterns and Prioritize Issues: Not all feedback will be equally useful, so looking for recurring issues or suggestions is essential. For example, if several users mention difficulty with a specific feature, this could indicate a problem worth prioritizing in the next update.
Set a Development Roadmap Based on Feedback: Use user feedback to guide your app’s development roadmap. Issues that are critical to the app’s performance or user experience should be addressed first, while minor improvements can be scheduled in future updates.
Regularly Communicate Updates: Whenever an update is made based on user feedback, communicating this change to users is crucial. This can be done through in-app notifications, email updates, or social media posts. By showing that their input has directly impacted the app, developers can increase user satisfaction and loyalty.
Iterate and Test: Mobile app development is an iterative process. After implementing feedback-based changes, gather feedback again to ensure the changes met user expectations. This cycle of improvement not only refines the app but also creates a dynamic development process focused on user satisfaction.
Real-Life Success Stories: The Power of User Feedback in Mobile App Development Many successful apps owe their triumph to the feedback-driven approach. For instance, Instagram, during its early stages, used user feedback to add filters and editing tools that helped it stand out. Another example is WhatsApp, which started as a simple messaging app but expanded its features—like group chat and voice messaging—based on user demand, making it a global leader in communication.
Conclusion: Make User Feedback a Cornerstone of Development Incorporating user feedback as a central pillar in mobile app development is key to achieving long-term success. Beyond enhancing user experience, it reduces churn, boosts ratings, and cultivates loyalty. By consistently gathering, analyzing, and implementing feedback, developers can ensure that their apps remain relevant, competitive, and beloved by users. In a world where apps must continually evolve to keep up with changing user expectations, feedback is not just valuable—it’s essential.

A tale of three EPs (at least)
I can’t believe it’s been six months since I released anything as a solo artist. In my head, I had planned to release at least one album and be well on the way to releasing another by now. I have all the songs written to have done that, but the issue is finishing them to the level where they can be released.
Fortunately, I have found a couple of people to help with that. The first EP that will be coming out is due some time in the second half of August (date TBC) and has been mixed and mastered by Adam Whittaker @mixedbyadam on Twitter, or his website is: https://www.mixedbyadam.com/. It’s finished and I think it sounds amazing. It’s definitely not me playing it safe, but then I never really do! The EP is called The Curse of the Mind and has 4 songs called Thought Camera, Poltergeist, The Cult of Fake Heroes, and The Outsider. I did a poll on Twitter to decide which cover to use out of a few I’d drafted and this one won:
In no particular order, it features
- a song in 5/4 time
- me singing in falsetto
- samples of my guitar parts chopped up and mangled
- a quite orchestral arrangement
- plus themes around privacy, brainwashing, an artist unable to face reality and the boundaries between “spirits” and mental health issues.
It doesn’t sound like a recipe for commercial success, but maybe it will find a niche and people who love those kinds of things.
The next EP after that is the second EP by my alt-folk duo, The Missed Trees, and is being mixed/produced by my good friend Chris Marney, who also did our debut EP, Animals. As with our first EP, it has three tracks, two of which are recorded in full and the third needs one fiddle part recording to complete it. The EP is called Resist and the tracks have all been played live already, so those who’ve been to our gigs will know them: they’re called Little Boats, Guilty Bystanders and Бункерный Дедь (Bunker Grandpa).
This EP should be released mid-late September and I’ll write more about it nearer the time, but here’s a first look at the cover:
Thirdly, I have sent the first two tracks off for another solo EP to be produced/mixed again by Chris. I’m still toying around with titles for it and finishing off bits of recording, but the tracks will be (possibly not in this order): Meandering Lights, Catfish Rule the Mall, Utopia and Darvaza Stench. They’re all linked by being somehow very distant/hard to imagine in everyday life. Any suggestions for a title? Hopefully, it’ll be out sometime in November with a bit of luck and perseverance.
There are two other EPs which are at an earlier stage - one for The Missed Trees and one more personal solo recording. I don’t want to make any promises yet on when they’ll be out. It feels good that I am making progress and moving forward in the creative process. I really want to share all these songs with other people. It seems selfish to keep them to myself.

”I know Rillaboom is gonna beat Inteleon” *Rillaboom proceeds to come in last place*. I have no idea how this poll got so many votes (I think it’s my most voted on poll), especially given how few the popular new-system starter poll got (seriously, the unpopular new-system starter poll got over 22 times the amount of votes that the popular new-system starter poll got. I’m willing to reckon that part of that is the increase in options and therefore tags but at the same time, it wasn’t even double the options so I think the amount of votes should have been a little closer)
Also I voted Quaquaval but I honestly don’t know who my favourite here actually is. I think I was thinking about the fact that the distribution of how much they appeal to me about the Kalos and Paldea starters is similar (not in type, Delphox is my favourite Kalos starter and Skeledirge is my least favourite starter) but more extreme for the Paldean starters - Greninja is meh but Skeledirge is ew, Delphox is pretty but Meowscarada is joint best Pokémon with Ceruledge (at least we got an aesthetically pleasing Fire/Ghost type this Gen) and Chesnaught is cool but not the best while Quaquaval is better. Only thing is, I’m now having second thoughts. I think I should’ve voted Chesnaught. As much as I love Quaquaval, voting for it on a popularity poll just doesn’t seem right when we’ve got all the others here and given I chose Meowscarada, Quaquaval is just one of those Pokémon I don’t realise exist until I battle Nemona
Oh yeah, part of me thinks that Rillaboom lost because the people who like it like Incineroar better because they fill a similar niche
Could’ve sworn I already made this poll but I can’t find it so I’m willing to bet I didn’t actually make it already
I know Rillaboom is gonna beat Inteleon but it’s still less popular than its region’s furry starter

eehee here it is the long awaited results of my chaotic ass survey about our hornies it’s so long holy heck, but I have seperated it into a couple sections to make sense of it all (omg if you read all of it lemme give you a kith teehee) ahhhh lol its SO nerdy haha but i hope that ya enjoy nonetheless! ✨
In this essay, I will....(hahah jk jk this is just all for fun)
1. Demographics Analysis
2. Polls on Fic Content
3. Member Specific Analysis
4. Deep Dive into the Juicy Questions (Confessions)
5. General Thoughts and Conclusion
6. Cute shit that ya’ll said that made me giggle
*Unpopular opinions will be made into their own post to give them ample space and analysis!
Other Notes:
Out of 100 individuals surveyed, 44 were readers, 2 were only writers, and 54 were both readers and writers.
Statistical significance can be effected by sampling, selection, and response bias (yeah i took a stats class teehee) and personal biases
All the the opinions and other analysis presented by me (Ro/binniesthighs) are purely my own oponion and are not factual. you are entitled to interpret all of this information however you like! Anything that i analyze is not definitive!
while this survey is mostly about stay smutblr, i hope that it can also maybe serve as a template for other fandoms as well with the more general questions! this is a survey for everyone!
i’d love to hear about what you think about anything presented in this analysis! feel free to send me an ask or comment! reposting is permitted within tumblr or on other platforms if proper credit is given! ❤️ (uwu hehe if you could please help me spread this i would appreciate it so much! i worked really hard on her 🥺)
1. Demographics Analysis:
Gender Identities of those Surveyed
~My thoughts: this really came as no surprise to me considering how the majority of kpop fans (especially boy group fans) identify as female! Seeing as I am a Stray Kids/Seventeen blog (both of them boy groups) it makes sense to me that my readers would mostly identify as female!
Another important thing to note (from a writer standpoint at least) is the wide array of identities that we still have present within the general audience of stay smut blur (SSB)! I’ll get into this later when i discuss favorite pairings to read, however i think that this gives us one more reason to write for a diverse audience of readers who can identify with different types of self-insert fics!
Top Five:
Female (81%)
Non-binary/gender non-conforming (13%)
Changes by the day (6%)
Male (4%)
Demiboy/Demigirl (3%)
Sexual Orientation of those Surveyed
Other identities mentioned:
????, unlabeled, aromatic bisexual, bicurious, demisexual, “just liking who i like”, experimenting, heteroflexible, sapiosexual, depends day by day, “i just like anyone”
~My thoughts: okkkkk i see us gays of SSB 😏 these demographics were really exciting for me to see! i think that it’s super cool that we have such representation across the board when it comes to sexual orientations present in our community! As someone who personally identifies as pan, this was super comforting to see that there are so many others like me in this little space of the internet! I think it’s safe to say at least from my lil survey that all the bi cuties out here own SSB 💗💜💙
From a literal standpoint, it also makes sense to me that heterosexuality is strongly present as well considering that often the pairs that we read are male idol x female reader so this is the perfect niche!
Top Five:
Bisexual (40.8%)
Heterosexual (26.5)
Pansexual (17.3%)
Queer (7.1%)
Asexual (4.1%)
Stay Creators!!
~My thoughts: this one i was THRILLED at seeing oml hahaha and i was so interested to see that this was nearly an even split!
I think that there’s something to be said about how sometimes we can take our hobbies: (movies, videogames, books, kpop, anime etc)--all things which we really like in totally normal and healthy ways but also kinda like....get hornies about them too? if that makes sense? for example, i have a friend who really likes certain video games/characters from these games as a fan and he’s shared with me that he also doesn’t mind watching porn containing those same characters! (ahahah ya all know what i mean don’t even lie haha)
what this question proved to me as that there are stays out there who practice “being a stay/being a stay creator” who also are interested in the more...horny side of this hobby/interest 😂
what is even more interesting to me is who i wonder if i’ve have consumed any of ya’ll’s content while you have consumed mine??? this i am DYING to know aha but it think its best for all of us to stay anonymous teehee ;)
either way, good on ya for doing what ya do!! you are so so treasured in this community too!! <3
2. Polls on Fic Content (a long section lol)
Favorite Pairing to Read
*other options selected were rankings of favorite pairings so i just added each of them as an entry to the respective category mentioned.
Top Five:
Idol x female reader (69%)
Idol x gender neutral reader (19%)
Idol x reader x Idol (poly r/ship) (14%)
Idol x reader, Idol x reader (threesome, not much interaction between the two idols) (8%)
~My thoughts: once again, this category was pretty self explanatory to me considering that the majority of readers are female identifying, so it would make sense that they would prefer to read smut that aligns with their identity! This is also super present anyway of SSB as i do feel like the majority of writing pieces that I do come along are idol x female reader, and most authors too often disclaim that they are the most comfortable writing this type of pairing as well.
What’s signficant as well is the interest in reading fics with gender neutral reader self inserts as well! this is my personal philosophy when it comes to writing (specifically with requests) but i think that writing gn!reader is always the safest bet to go as to not make assumptions about readers! for writers i think that seeing this 19% is something important to take into consideration!
An outlier to me with this demographic was the “poly r-ship” poll garnering a notable 14% in comparison to the idol x idol option which got 10 less votes (4%). what is a little confusing to me about this is how poly r/ships often (but not always) contain idol x idol content, however there is discrepancy with the amount of readers outright saying that they enjoy reading it alone. I’ll get into poly fics later with the unpopular opinions section--however i wanted to plant the seed here hehe. One other caveat to this is the fact that on SSB i feel like idol x idol content is really in the minority and is much more present on a platform like AO3 so this could be another explaination!
What is kinda cute to me is the fact that readers do really like poly r-ship dynamics more than a threesome (as i defined it, “with less interaction”) so this makes me feel like we are all saps for the fluff that comes with poly r-ship fics ;)
Favorite Kind of Smut to Read
male idol smut (67%)
i read both! (female and male idol smut) (25%)
depends on my mood (7%)
female idol smut (1%)
~My thoughts: Again, this is super expected to me as well considering the above statistics. Since i am a skz blog (a boy group) --as are my moots-- it really makes sense that those who filled out this survey would be into male idol smut!
what was cool for me to see as well was the number of readers who also read female idol smut as well as male idol smut! personally, i more predominately a fan of boy groups compared to the amount of girl group content that I consume (note: i do also consume gg content). because of this, i think that its really up to personal preferences and the content that you consume that can be reflective of the smut content that you consume as well and ya know, whoever gets your hornies going ;)
Favorite Genres...Ranked!
*so this was my fault lol i totally formatted this question poorly in google forms so i’ll try to summarize the most popular rankings with my words haha
*bc of the way that i miffed it (lol) i wasn’t able to get exact measurements, but rough ones!
Top Five:
Smut, fluff, angst
smut n’ fluff (with specific emphasis angst is not desired)
smut, angst, fluff,
fluff, smut, angst,
angst, fluff, smut
~My thoughts: by far, the most popular ranking that i saw was as follows: smut, fluff, angst. i saw this sososos many times haha also...ya’ll got really creative with your rankings and it made me giggle hehe. So! seeing as this is stay smutblr haha makes total sense that the three most popular rankings that we have were lead by smut! since we’re here for the hornies, i totally get this.
as for the “smut n’ fluff” or “fluffy smut” category, there was a decent amount of readers that expressed that this mixture is their fave! i’m kinda looping this with the “mixture” option that i also provided for this question since this was the most popular mixture that i was able to observe along with angst + smut. interestingly, i saw a couple mentions of “hurt/comfort” fics with this question too so this went well with this preference. as for number three on this list, we dip into that smut + angst category that I just mentioned as well. there were several individuals who said that they really really enjoy reading smut with angst!
lastly we get to the four and five on the list: four being fluff, smut and angst. i think this category can also properly represent the folx who tend to like more fluffy fics over the smutty ones, but that can also have suggestive themes too! in five, we have angst, fluff and smut which also is representative of another theme that i saw: as far as plot goes, several people mentioned that they liked fics that start with angst, get fluffier, and then end up in smut, so i think that this could be easily compared!
*there were also several readers who simply said “all of them” or opted not to rank, (lol me) so this really shows the variability in results!
Cute stuff ya’ll said (kind of out of context too LOL)
“... hehE I HOPE THIS MAKES SENSE.”
“...I KNOW IT [my ranking] LOOKS TERRIBLY SPECIFIC AND IM SO SORRY and I guess the better way to describe that was one that has all 3 with a happy ending lol my b my b.”
“ ...it just depends on the mood my dude.”
“... (the smut doesn’t have to be soft i just want the relationship to be soft and i want aftercare and general affection).”
“(but almost no angst oops)”
“angst honestly makes me so sad.”
“... but long fics with angst and slow burn smut/fluff is just WOW.”
“ my favourite thing is when it's fluffy smut tbh with a little bit of angsty backstory. that is *chefs kiss*”
“(I'm a sucker for good angsty fics but I cant seem to find them???)”
“Smut, Fluff, Angst (I tend to be a bit of a purist so no mixture here).”
“(i can't read pure angst lol) “
“(I love how much plot there is in angsty fics but I personally can't read anything without a happy ending, i just can't take it)”
“ i literally couldn't rank them bc my mood is always changing lmaooo.”
“ smut, fluff, angst. i know what i’m about.”
Favorite Length of Fics
Top Five:
5k-8k words (27%)
2k-4k words (25%)
1k-2k words (20%)
10k-20k words (15%)
20k words (12%)
~My thoughts: this one was super helpful for me to see!! and writers i hope that this is helpful for you too! as someone who tends to rambles (lol) it was very comforting for me to see that long-ish fics are actually preferred! what is really cool about this data too is that it is all super well balanced for the most part and nearly edqual in some parts! how i see this, i think that when it comes to preferences of length, its really reader specific so anyone could like anything! this goes into a little bit the slow burn question that i asked as well too, but it’s really cool to see that when readers do read, they kinda like something to sink their teeth into!
i wanted to look into how long it takes you to read these words, and it appears that on average, a 5-8k fic can take someone 30 mins to read whereas a 2-4k fic takes about 15mins! idk if this says something about attention spans, but as a writer it warms my heart to know that you’re willing to spend 30 minutes of your time reading something that i wrote! 🥺
another thing i wanted to bring up is the “hard and fast” smut readers--those who like to get straight to the point, get right to business and to the juice! they are also a decently large group too! as for readers who like a nice long fic or a chaptered fic, they are super close in numbers! from this, it’s safe for me to assume that maybe those who like reading longer fics are more inclined to strap in for the long haul with chaptered fics too!
Favorite AUs to Read
*the top category that got cut off (thank you google forms lol) is friends to lovers! the one that says “...love” at 48% is enemies to lovers, and the one that has a blanked out title at 35% is strangers to lovers!
Top Five:
friends to lovers (65%)
enemies to lovers (48%)
high school/college au (40%)
roommates/neighbors to lovers (38%)
strangers to lovers (35%)
Other AUs mentioned by you!
office au, royal au, vampire au, fake date, idol au, slice of life, boarding school au, childhood friends, soulmate au
~My thoughts: ok ok so this was RAD to see! i often wonder myself the kinds of aus that my readers would like to see so this was really helpful! circling back on how readers tend to favor fluff n’ smut (friends to lovers) and angst n’ smut (enemies to lovers) i think that we’re seeing some more themes here teehee.
i like to think that since most of us are of the college age, the college au is super relatable therefore we really like to read it! not to mention that college and high school au’s are super duper cute as well! this is also relatable to the roommates/neighbors to lovers category which is also relatable to us who may or may not have experienced having a roommate or crush on the cutie next door ;) as a couple readers mentioned, they liked more “slice of life” au’s--which both of these categories fall into! i think we as readers like scenarios that feel the most real to us, bc they are the easiest to insert ourselves into :)
fantasy and thriller, action, more “fiction” tropes are in the minority, however i think that this can be for the exact same reason as i mentioned above where readers like more relatable scenarios.
Opinions on Slow Burn Fics
~My thoughts: during polling of this category, this pie cart stayed basically the same the whole time!! that was pretty cute to see! the important take aways from this survey for me is the fact that slow burn fics are generally really loved! again, lol as someone who writes big ol’ long slow burn fics this made me feel a lot better hahaha basically, the general consensus is that slow burn fics are welcome most of the time, however some readers might need to invest a little more time into them! this is also very easily comparable to the above statistics on the length of fics preferred (longer ones being the ones more popular) so here’s a lil more supporting evidence!
3. Member Specific Analysis
Bias Survey
Top Five:
Chan (19%)
Changbin (18%)
Hyunjin (16%)
Jisung (15%)
Minho (14%)
~My thoughts: ok ok ok so this is where it starts getting JUICY hehe (also i apologize once more for making you pick LOL)
the reason why i asked this question was because i wanted to see if there was a correlation with biases and if there was a probability that members who had more people biasing them (or popularity I guess) were more likely to be read more in smut fics! AND I WAS RIGHT haha isn’t this so fkn cool??? (see more in the next section!)
for comparison, i went to kprofiles to see their little survey on bias popularity and their top five.
Kprofiles Top Five:
Hyunjin (15%)
Felix (14%)
Chan (12%)
Minho (11%)
Jisung (11%)
SO oh my god my nerd brain is loosing it over this REE so, what i should note that is those who took this survey on my blog are likely generally different based off of the fact that they are here to read smut specifically, rather than the general holistic popularity survey. It is for this reason that we see Felix much higher on this list and Changbin much lower too (as we know Felix is really well known generally and globally and there are *generally* fewer Bin biased fans). What was really interesting to see what that with Hyunjin, Chan, Jisung and Minho, they still all stayed within the top five! Soooo what i’m saying is.... all of you Hyunjin, Chan, Jisung and Minho fans really must like your smut 😏 and I think that it’s safe to assume that the majority of hard stans come from these four members too ooP (and of course our Binnie too! ;) i see all of ya’ll 👀)
Members That Get Our Hornies Going
~My thoughts: AHH DOESN’T THIS LOOK SO SATISFYING? I’M SO PROUD OF HER!!!
First off, i would like to acknowledge the all mighty power of Bang Christopher Chan for pooling this most hornies god DAMN while i kind of expected this, it is also evidenced in the fics that i write! recently i’ve been tracking the number of notes that my Chan hard thoughts get in comparison to other members and the differences are usually ASTRONOMICAL. He is most def the most popular member for smut for several different reasons, lowkey bc i think that it’s kind of part of his brand?? hahaha if ya know what i mean?
As for preference from Minho on, we can see a super obvious trend that as age order decreases, we get less and less interest for reading for the member. I’m fairly inclined to believe that this has to do with the fact that most often fans (especially fans older than skz) have a harder time seeing the younger members in a sexual way, so the lack of interest totally makes sense here! As referenced above too, we found that the oldest five members (Chan --> Jisung) are the favorites for smut reading which we can see here as well when the numbers really drop after Felix (Felix coming in at 6th place on my “popularity” survey).
Bc of these statistics, i do really feel like as a reader, i tend to see much, much more fics involving our top five! As for Seungmin and Jeongin, I’ve also seen people state that they do not read or write content for these two members bc they do not feel as comfortable, so this can also explain the lack of content. Also as we have heard many times, Jeongin is a bit of a hot topic lol within the SSB community, so this makes sense that his readership would be low as well.
4. Deep Dive into the Juicy Questions (aka confessions)
Is the fact that you read smut a seggsy secret?
~My thoughts: JUICE TIME JUICE TIME
Before I say anything, i wanted to tell you all how all of the juicy questions were totally optional, but i got 100% participation for every single one of them which if find HILARIOUS i guess you all are just as curious as i am?? ;)
So! for this question, we have an overwhelming amount of readers who said that only their closest friends know which is so cute to me! i love how we can trust our friends with this hehe. i also fall into this category bc like, it’s lowkey kinda fun to talk about? maybe also the fact that i run a smut acct makes me care a little less about it all hahah
secondly, we have the rather large group of people who said that they wouldn’t dare to tell anyone which is also sooo cute haha idk how to explain it but this was the category that i started out in too until i found the right people! But i totally get ya, reading smut--especially-- kpop smut-- can be embarrassing or cringey to share (not to mention that it is somewhat morally grey LOL) so this is really understandable!
also my fkn hats off to all of you who said that you didn’t care about who knows that you read smut. here, you dropped this: 👑 you’re much braver than i could ever be.
When you read smut, do you really feel the hornies?
~My thoughts: ok, so this one to me was also very interesting for me to see as well! (also if you get uncomfy reading about personal masturbation habits you can skip this one lol)
the reason why i asked this question was because i wanted to see if people “get off” by reading smut (whether reading it turns you on, or if you choose to use it for “material” to get off on however this might look, might be more of a mental simulation without any real like, physical getting off) candidly, I use smut to get myself off every once and a while, so i wanted to see who else might be in the same group! since becoming a writer however, i read much less and reading it doesn’t hit the same when i was just a reader bc i have a different perspective of being the one writing the smut so i look at it more analytically--i digress.
it was exciting (teehee get the pun?) for me to see that others also “get off” on smut too--and that they are the majority! teehee it is an honor for me to provide you with the hornies LOL. at the same time, we still have a large group in the “don’t take to seriously” category which was interesting to me too! i can’t speak for these readers, but i interpreted these kind of readers to be the kind who read smut to imagine the scenes and are like “hm, that’s hot, i like thinking about this.” but it doesn’t extend much outside of these thoughts.
What is the most popular position pairing we like to read?
*smaller slices of the pie represent multiple favorites which i also seperated back into the categories corresponding to get the best count into what was the most preferred.
Actual Breakdown:
dom!idol // sub!reader (51 votes)
switch!idol // switch!reader (32 votes)
subidol! // dom!reader (11 votes)
all of the above (5 votes)
depends on my mood (2 votes)
~My thoughts: i feel as if there is a bit of a conflict between which position really is “the best” and while we really can’t know the answer to this question since everyone has different preferences, we can at least find out which one is the most popular to be consumed!
again, going off of the content that I also see as a reader, i see TONS of dom!idol fics, like, left and right. also, if i may come for all of our necks, 👀 but...there’s really something to be said about the fact that the majority of readers are female and historically and socially, women are typically socialized to be submissive, so i can see why this would be why we would favor this among fics--this is even further evidenced by the fact that male idol smut is also preferred, thus further perpetuating the fact that women have been socialized to be submissive to men specifically. i’m not saying that this is the end all be all reason that this trend is present, but i merely offer it as a possible explaination. this is a much larger sociological conversation, but i think that this trend also showed itself in the types of smut that readers seek out as well--according to demographics.
sub!idol fics are few and far in-between, and i think that this can also be for the exact same reason as i talked about above!
When you read smut, do you pick faves to read for?
~My thoughts: what’s cool about this question is the fact that the “half and half” nature of it also resembles what we saw in the section for favorite members to read! As we see in that chart, 41 out of 100 people said that they read everyone, similar to this question where 48 out of 100 people said that they read for everyone. What this proves to me once more is that when it comes for reading fics, there's a 50/50 chance that the reader will look at, and read it based off of who it is about alone. This is a really powerful statistic, meaning that the members who that a writer might write for really dictates their readership! At the same time, it’s super comforting to know that regardless of what you as a writer might write, there’s always someone out there who is willing to read it! (as evidenced by the 52% of people who read for anyone! this is still a large number)
Readers: Do you only use Tumblr for smut?
~My thoughts: when i first started out reading smut, i was in the “i just look up skz smut” group LOL so i wanted to see again if there was anyone like me--which there is! This was more of my interest in seeing if some people view tumblr as “their smut dealer” AHA so that my initial motivation. I was surprised to see that this is not the case! out of 100 readers, 39 of them have their own non-smut blogs and the second largest group of 26 people use tumblr for smut exclusively.
idk why, but when thinking of this question, it really got me thinking back to the question where i asked if reading smut is a seggsy secret, and there was the group of people who said that it is for them--i’m assuming that these people might be part of the group have non-smut blogs and read on the side teehee.
at the same time, there is a combined 40 people who said that they use tumblr for smut purposes only which makes sense to me, as those who filled out my survey are readers of my smut blog if you catch my drift haha
Writers: Do you read smut, or just write it?
*56 responses correlate with those polled who identified as writers/both as mentioned above
~My thoughts: this survey is really really cute for me to see bc it means that there is a whole support network or writers out there reading, supporting and here to hype other writers work!! if anything, as a writer because it takes so much time to write, it can become hard to find time to read, hence the “when i have time option lollll (*cough cough* me LOL) thank you all for your honesty with this question!
5. General Thoughts and Conclusion
Survey on Exposure
~My thoughts: i kinda wanna close off this survey by getting on my soapbox for a sec lol. At least for me, the most common ways that readers found my blog were: looking up a tag, and from a repost. i think that this really goes to show the power of exposure and certain tactics that you can use to increate readership of your account! new readers, if you’re reading this and you’re just starting out, tagging your stuff is so so important!
also, as i have said and so so, many other content creators have said countless times before, reposting is so crucial and it takes little to no effort to repost a creators work so that it might reach others! as a writers, we spend hours, and i mean hours creating content, editing, drafting, creating headers all out own time to publish something that we are proud of and for you to enjoy! it means the world to authors when you reblog their work and even more when you give feedback too because this is our passion! we write for free in the middle of our busy lives so the validation makes it all worth it!!
Conclusion
~phew! so that’s it! once again, i wanted to thank you all from the bottom of my heart from participating in this lil study! i really hope that it is helpful to writers and readers alike! i wanna give ya all the biiiiiigest Ro huggies!! 💕💕
as i mentioned above, the answers for the unpopular opinions will be made into their own post bc there is a ton of them and i didn’t want to clutter up this doc lol
don’t ya ever forget that you are important, loved, and special! happy hornies my cuties ;)
~R 🌹

Reading “Trends of Fiction in 2000s Japanese Pop Culture”, an article that I have seen referenced multiple times by prestigious public weeb thinkers (Like Aelkus and Brett Fujioka), and I am let down. Its weak in a way so much academic cultural studies are; making proclamations about what media means to society-at-large with no data from society-at-large, or even sanity checks around its ideas
Like okay, so it posits different “phases” of what Japan wanted from anime at different times, and it uses Saikano as its example of the Sekaikei genre, which is when an apocalyptic, big-picture events are made mechanically dependent on the resolution of the main characters inner struggles, often romantic struggles. It posit this genre fell from favor starting in the “post-9/11″ era, and was replaced by Sabaibukei or “Death Game” genre, which it typifies with Death Note by the mid-2000′s. But those examples are really telling; Saikano the anime - the only thing that was successful, the manga was quite niche - came out in 2002; while Death Note, the manga, came out in 2003 and was immediately successful. I don’t think the era shifted at all in that one year time period! These are just products marketed at very different audiences - Saikano is niche Moe romance, Death Note is mainstream Shonen. I think the anime release date (2006) for Death note tripped up the author here, but if you understand the products in question they aren’t separated by much time. So the events you posit for causation seem pretty tenuous, the market doesn’t reflect it.
This extends down to the products in question. To continue with Saikano, the author describes it as reflecting a specific male fantasy:
By being loved by the competent heroine, the passive protagonist indirectly gains the power to control the world.
Which they then draw conclusions from, and also make the requisite Žižek reference as mandated by Section 3.2.11b of the Geneva Convention for Pompous Cultural Criticism.
‘Cept the idea of a “competent” or “empowered” heroine in Saikano is nowhere to be found in the eyes of the typical viewer. Saikano is an anime about a regular guy and a girl who is secretly a government superweapon/mecha, except she has no consent or agency in that process; she is entirely a victim of and at the whims of the government using her. And that is how Japanese audiences saw it; I went through Anikore (as close as Japan has to a MAL) reviews of the show, and everyone mentions what I remember from the show - it being essentially emotional torture porn of a girl being slowly murdered via mecha transformation. The ‘fantasy’ is that you get maximum soap opera tragedy without the guy, aka the audience self-insert, having to suffer personally, instead the girl and the world do. Empowerment is nowhere to be found as a theme here.
It wasn’t hard to find this fact - I, for one, watched the show back in the day, but seriously just check any discussion forum or interview any self-described fan. Why wouldn’t that be...expected in an article like this, to have citations to forums or polls or something? Its virtually absent due to essentially prestige, but to me is like the bare minimum for this kind of analysis. There are good ideas in this article for sure, but the inability to pick the low-hanging fruit is real.

EVERY FOUNDER SHOULD KNOW ABOUT FOUNDERS
Even a day's delay can bring news that causes an investor to your cofounder s should be like introducing a girl/boyfriend to your parents—something you do only when things reach a certain stage of seriousness. Counterintuitive as it feels, it's better most of the calories. There's something fake about it. So while they're often nice guys, they just can't help it. History tends to get rewritten by big successes, so that in retrospect it seems obvious they were going to grow into big, beautiful swans. So there you have it: languages are not equivalent, and I think this is the preferred way to solve the problem in its full complexity, it would seem crazy to most people to try to make it big is not simply a constant fraction of the things that will surprise you if you build something popular is that you shouldn't relax just because you have to create a special visa for startup founders. ITA in New Architect magazine said that one line of Lisp can replace 20 lines of C, and since they're the customer you can take that without having to think.
The combined code can be much shorter than if you had no users, it would still be important to release quickly, because for a startup the initial release acts as a shakedown cruise. A couple days ago I found to my surprise that I'd been granted a patent. If you talk to investors in parallel rather than serially. But that's another issue. Not just small, lame. If life is short. What they really dislike is the sort of big social shift that only happens once every few generations. In phase 2, yes. One thing all startups have in common is that they probably will, one day.
Such a high proportion of successful startups raise money that it might seem fundraising is one of the organizers got up on the stage to deliver an impromptu rebuttal. Ken Anderson says that the following code is about as close as you can, to a limited extent, simulate a closure a function that takes a number n, and returns a function that generates accumulators—a function that takes another number i and returns n incremented by i. So here we have two pieces of information that I think are very valuable. Don't be hapless. And yet we'd all be wrong. Introducing an investor to your cofounder s should be like introducing a girl/boyfriend to your parents—something you do only when things reach a certain stage of seriousness. And frankly the thought of a 30% success rate at fundraising makes my stomach clench.
But the founders contribute ideas. So things don't happen in the Python example, where we are in effect simulating the code that a compiler would generate to implement a lexical variable. This is why we even hear about new languages like Perl and Python. This was the Lisp function eval. Similarly, when investors ask how much you plan to raise a $7 million series A round, and we'll be accepting termsheets next tuesday. And yet within a month it had happened again: an aggressive west coast VC who had met the founder of a company in trouble, which makes it difficult to tell founders what to aim for. To get a truly random sample, pollsters ask, say, every 20th person leaving the polling place who they voted for.1 If it were, so you don't need money take some to grow faster than the salary that seemed so high when they left school.
A group of 10 people working together in the usual way. The challenge is whether we can keep things this way. Often it's one the founders themselves hadn't seen yet. It is. A bottom-up program should be easier to raise money in phase 2 get the best investors is in the bank so far. If an acquirer thinks you're going to stick around no matter what, they'll be more likely to buy you. If they reject you in phase 2, as a sort of Gresham's Law of trolls: trolls are willing to use a forum with a lot of animals in the wild is that each species thrives in groups of a certain size. Because some people don't respond. The sites's guidelines explicitly ask people not to say things they wouldn't say face to face contact that makes deals happen, but whatever it is, it hasn't yet been duplicated by technology.2 In a place where there was infrastructure for startups, accumulated knowledge about how to make them act. $15k per month is high, so don't actually spend that much.
This is not just a synonym for annoying. But this approach is industry best practice, and the odds of finding programmers, libraries, etc. Even a day's delay can bring news that causes an investor to commit, ask them to introduce you to other investors they respect. For example, if you've sold more than about 40% of your company in subsequent rounds. If your startup is connected to a specific industry, you may be better off in Silicon Valley. And yet a large number of startups. Investors are pinched between two kinds of fear: fear of investing in startups that fizzle, and fear of missing out on startups that take off. So you must cushion the blow with soft words.
Most visible disasters are not so alarming as they seem. When you pick a big winner, you won't know your users, it's dangerous to guess what the eventual equity round valuation might be. Most programming probably consists of writing little glue programs you can use, if the upside looks good enough. So if you lop off the top of the base language, you build on top of the possible rewards, you thereby decrease people's willingness to take risks proportionate to the returns. Wufoo took this to heart and released their form-builder before the underlying database. Because Python doesn't fully support lexical variables, you have a lead. Its purpose is to shield the pointy-haired boss believes that all programming languages are pretty much equivalent. And as software shifts off the desktop and onto servers a future even Microsoft seems resigned to, there will be more of them go ahead and do without startups. It will be easier to modify as well, and with it growth. Their lives are short too. And when people seem to think, any economic upper bound on this number. The other big driver of change is that startups are becoming cheaper to start a consulting company, or a niche product company, but against a backdrop of constant disasters.
Users love a site that's constantly improving. Slashdot, for example—because they're confident you'll pick them. And it is not clear whether you can actually solve this problem in other languages, of course, projects where the choice of programming language doesn't matter much. If it were, you could fund everyone who seemed likely to succeed at all. Inc or class foo: def __init__ self, s: self. What's important about startups is the pool of potential founders. When a decision causes you to develop software at a fraction of the probability that the company will die or at the very least people will have to be.
Notes
The company may not even be conscious of this model was that it makes the business spectrum than the rich paid high taxes? Investors are one of the words out of fashion in 100 years, dribbling out a preliminary answer on the y, you'd ultimately be a variant of the world population, and that's much harder it is very long: it might be 20 or 30 times as much difference to a bunch of actual adults suddenly found themselves trapped in high school junior. I believe, is this someone you want to either. 39 says that I know this is a variant of the ingredients in our own version that afternoon.
Down rounds are at selling it. Only founders of failing startups would even be working on Y Combinator makes founders move for 3 months also suggests one underestimates how hard they work. People tell the craziest lies about me.

Best And Worst Brands Of 2020: From TikTok, The NBA, The Home Depot And Chick-fil-A...To Quibi, Facebook And The CDC
New Post has been published on https://perfectirishgifts.com/best-and-worst-brands-of-2020-from-tiktok-the-nba-the-home-depot-and-chick-fil-a-to-quibi-facebook-and-the-cdc/
Best And Worst Brands Of 2020: From TikTok, The NBA, The Home Depot And Chick-fil-A...To Quibi, Facebook And The CDC
This year was unprecedented for so many reasons. For most of us, our heads haven’t stopped spinning since March. For brands, this was a year when many discovered if they really had a purpose that anchored their place in the world and if their actions and experiences backed up their words and promises.
Deciding on brand winners and losers is always a challenge, but this year, I had some of the fiercest debates yet with my 450 Prophet colleagues, as brand performance took on so many more dimensions in 2020.
A number of brands were debated. We discussed the impact that Kobe and LeBron had on the world, while also talking about the Tiger King as the first COVID-19 bingeable show. The team gave a lot of love to the early COVID-19 responders, including Unilever, 3M, P&G, KFC, Chipotle and Ford, while giving equal props to those that took an authentic, purpose-based stand on social justice, such as Nike, The North Face, REI, Ben & Jerry’s, Glossier and J&J. The brands that helped us get through lockdown and changed the way we think of delivered meals and goods, including DoorDash, GrubHub, UberEats, Instacart and, “newcomers” Target and Walmart all received a lot of votes. Similarly, the streamers got a lot of mentions, from Netflix to Hulu to Peacock and Apple TV, as did the connectors in Zoom, WebEx, Teams and the slowly dying Skype.
Our team engaged in some serious conversations about the differences in responses that Uncle Ben’s (now Ben’s Original) versus Aunt Jemima (we are still waiting) took or about how we will collectively sustain the incredible Black Lives Matter momentum. Finally, others wondered what shape Brand USA will take in 2021 and how we will be talking about Pfizer and Moderna a year from now.
So, while dozens stood out, these seven received our highest marks:
Chick-fil-A
Florida, Brooksville, Chick-fil-A, fast food chicken restaurant, drive thru line due to Pandemic.
While COVID-19 crushed the restaurant industry, Chick-fil-A’s immediate response and quick innovations explain why it’s become the world’s third largest and most beloved quick-service restaurant. It endeared itself to its growing number of fans by doubling down on drive-thru speed, including expanded lanes, “face-to-face ordering” and “order ahead pick up.” It is crushing it with their Chick-fil-A One app and enhanced delivery options, accelerating new innovations such as meal kits and their famous sauces in grocery stores…all while still bringing “my pleasure” southern hospitality to life every day to millions.
Clorox

While this brand has long soared in our Prophet Brand Relevance Index® it took on an entirely new meaning in the virus-dominated universe of 2020. As consumers clamored for reliable ways to protect their families, the brand gracefully acknowledged supply-chain problems and shortages while becoming indispensable in our lives. With smart partnerships, like United Airlines and the Cleveland Clinic, it’s using its trustworthiness to increase sales and market share.
The Home Depot

This year’s WFH trends helped propel the Home Depot’s business as “Doers Got More Done.” What helped drive and accelerate this is its investment, commitment and leadership. The Home Depot continues to lead the industry in inter-connected digital experiences and e-commerce, customer service, products and pricing. Its commitment to customer and employee safety (and giving back to the community) has been second to none in the retail industry, as has its commitment to professional customers.
TikTok

While TikTok was in the news for various reasons in 2020, its incredible timing met a moment when many needed ten seconds of relief from the real world. With over 100 million users in the U.S., TikTok has rapidly become part of our cultural lexicon. TikTok’s short-form viral videos, including its dance challenges and Ocean Spray “Dreams” video, took our minds off all things serious. From a niche player to mainstream media, this renegade has become so relevant that other platforms, like Instagram with its “Reels,” are racing to catch up.
The National Basketball Association

In a year of so many sports disappointments, the league, individual teams and countless players have demonstrated the best reactions to both COVID-19 and Black Lives Matter. With its bubble, the NBA showed a thoughtful, empathic balance between athletic safety and happy fans. With its unapologetic embrace of racial-justice efforts, as expressed on each player’s jersey, it’s using its stage to change the hearts and minds of its strong fanbase.
Zoom
President Barack Obama “crashes” Zoom board meeting for the Greater Chicago Food Depository.
Love it. Hate it. It doesn’t matter. Triple-digit gains prove Zoom found new relevance in wildly diverse audiences, from COVID-19 stranded senior citizens to energetic preschoolers. If you didn’t know what a virtual background was or used the words “you’re on mute, Scott,” you certainly do now. With a ridiculous stock price and valuation, continuous new features and updates through Zapps (a suite of apps integrated into Zoom), as well as fun innovations like video filters, Zoom will continue to be an integral part of our lives for years to come.
Peloton
This workout-from-home brand started the year by offending an entire gender with its tone-deaf holiday ad. (Note to husbands: It’s inadvisable to tell your wife to work out more.) But as gyms around the world shut down, it understood that it had a unique opportunity to make family-room workouts an integral part of people’s health and wellness. With bikes, treadmills and increasingly appealing subscription offers (90 days free for all), Peloton hit on all cylinders in 2020.
And the brands that disappointed us the most:
Uncle Ben’s, Aunt Jemima and Land O’Lakes
LONDON: A customer’s hand taking a packet of Uncle Ben’s rice. The brand is to change the image of a … [] black farmer and could also be forced to change its name, as a reaction to a backlash over racial injustice.
While all of these storied brands announced they were making changes, it took a full-on social uprising for Mars Foods, PepsiCo and Land O’Lakes to address their decades-old history of racist brand imagery. All have done the right things in starting to address the issue. Uncle Ben has given way to Ben’s Original Rice, for example, and Land O’ Lakes has removed the Native American woman from its logo. But none have explained why it took them so long.
Boeing
The Boeing 737 MAX will take another key step in its comeback to commercial travel on December 2, … [] 2020 by attempting to reassure the public with a test flight by American Airlines conducted for the news media.
Even as the nearly two-year grounding of Boeing 737 Max comes to an end and the company moves to again sells its planes, we saw plenty to disappoint us. Not only did the safety oversights and mismanagement result in tragedies in 2018 and 2019, but it also cost as much as $25 billion. And now, it has to sell the canceled planes to airlines at steep discounts, a blow to shareholders and what was once one of the most admired names in U.S. manufacturing. COVID-19 is continuing Boeing’s misery, with global air travel falling 66 percent.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control
CDC Logo
In what should have been the least controversial voice in American public health, CDC leadership allowed politics to drag it away from its central aim. It bumbled COVID-19 testing. Early on, it offered vague and contradictory guidance on masks. And while it certainly isn’t entirely to blame for the epidemic of misinformation sweeping the U.S., it didn’t do enough to stop it.
Facebook
(Photo illustration by Jakub Porzycki/NurPhoto via Getty Images)
Even in an industry rife with possible villains, Facebook still manages to wind up on the wrong side of history in just about everything. As a repeat offender from our 2018 list, Facebook’s role in misinformation regarding the pandemic, vaccinations and elections continued to make it harder and harder to trust the brand. Adding insult to injury, after dealing with a much deserved summer boycott, Facebook now faces a major lawsuit with the Federal Trade Commission (and 40 states) arguing it’s time to break this company up.
Quibi
People wearing masks walk past an advertisement for Quibi in a subway Station on October 22, 2020 in … [] New York City. On October 21st, Quibi’s founders announced it was shutting down its service after only six months of operation.
It could have sparked a content revolution. But Quibi, specializing in short-form content “chapters” of less than 10 minutes, failed spectacularly. In a world with fewer commuters, the idea just wasn’t compelling. Of the $1.75 billion it raised, it is returning just $350 million to investors. But we do think chief executive Meg Whitman deserves praise for pulling the plug at six months, instead of torturing both investors and the few viewers leveraging its platform.
What do you think of our list? Who would you add? Add your thoughts to the comments below.
Keep your eye out for Prophet‘s Brand Relevance Index – launching early 2021.
