Behind the Brian Curtain - Sounds (17/01/1987)

In an effort to take their music to the culture starved youth of the world, Queen visit Hungary for the world premiere of the film they made there, Magic: Queen In Budapest. Brian May explains the reason for their crusade and how they’ve managed to survive so long.

There’s a moment in the new Queen movie when the band are cruising up the Danube through Budapest on a hydrofoil and someone points out the Hungarian houses of parliament to Freddie Mercury.

"The houses of parliament?” he laughs. “Is it for sale? How many bedrooms has it got? Are there servants?”

Then he claps his hand over his mouth, eyes twinkling mischievously.

There’s nothing particularly outrageous about that, you may think… except when heard while sitting among 2000 Hungarians, including some members of the politburo, such a throwaway quip takes on a new meaning.

They laughed, yes – slowly and carefully. Rock ‘n’ Roll in a communist country is never an easy thing to contemplate. The fact that we’re talking about Queen here, whose stylised pomp may give some of you the creeps is of no matter. It’s loud, excessive, glamorous, and most of all, it’s Western. And the people it seems can’t get enough.

So picture the scene: Queen at The Nepstadion (The People’s Stadium) in Budapest in July 1986, playing to a sell-out crowd of 80,000 while 45,000 of the 250,000 who couldn’t get tickets turned up anyway, just to listen from outside the stadium walls. Some had come from Warsaw, Odessa and Minsk.

And now Queen are about to notch up another first (that was the biggest musical event to be held in Eastern Europe) as the film Magic: Queen in Budapest has just, at the end of last year, gone on general release throughout Eastern Europe, the first time this has happened for a Western rock band.

Recorded by 17 cameras, which produced over 100,00 feet of film (22 hours worth) the concert was a stunning success; although there was never any chance that it wouldn’t be.

You realise how significantly the authorities took the event when you learn that for the first time ever the Soviet Union magnanimously allowed its citizens to be bussed into Hungary, or that – as the local press reported for the gig – there would be ‘lenient restriction on audience behaviour’.

Think about that next time you pull on leather trousers and head out to get completely smashed to your current fave rave.

Budapest in December is bloody cold, o cold that a bellyful of schnapps seemed to be the only way to keep your blood from freezing.

I am part of a small party of British journalists flown out to attend the world premiere of the film, and accordingly we receive VIP treatment – the nice soldiers at the airport couldn’t do enough to rush us through passport control – and it seems every associated with the band is elevated to a position of importance similar to, at least that of a high-ranking politician.

It makes weird sense, Queen in this part of the world. Their sound matches the sometimes baroque, sometimes gothic architecture, the immense statues to fallen war heroes, the vast expanse of the Danube snaking away from Austria and towards Yugoslavia, Romania and finally the Black Sea.

With Brian May as the Queen rep, and the likes of Janos Barabas (the Deputy Head of the division for Agitation and Propaganda of the Central Committee) present this is the place to be, as the healthy selection of Hungarian sports, music and TV personalities would no doubt testify. Such is the feeling about the event that the Queen Fan Club (Hungarian Division), who managed to get only 100 tickets for their 5000 members ha threatened to storm the building. Not a threat to make idly in a country with such, shall we say, definite views on public order.

The 85-minute long film, basically the Nepstadion gig cut with scenes of the band in and around Budapest, is an excellent example of why queen could be called the greatest rock ‘n’ roll band in the world.

Magic has also achieved the distinction of being the first-ever film in Eastern Europe to be mixed in Dolby Stereo, and the first Hungarian production not to seek any government financial aid. You see, this is just one big happy success story all down the line.

After the premiere, a reception is held for 800 guests, each one, it seems, attempting to work his or her way towards a surprisingly unflustered Brian May. In a country where the state takes strict control over whose records are released and exactly how many, they all seem very eager to stand next to this particular recording star.

I happen upon the President of the official Queen Fan Club of Hungary, but end up talking to her friend instead.

“I zink ze Queen only want ze money now, zay are not zo good now.”

I suggest, while nibbling on a tasty little biscuit with ‘Queen’ written on it in icing, that if all they wanted was money they could have called it a day years ago, but she won’t be swayed. She tells me that her friend, the Fan Club President agrees and that she even thinks Paul McCartney is better, anyway.

At the same time, they both noticeably revert into swooning mod as Brian May approaches, surrounded by a polite but persistent mass of autograph books and pens on legs.

Yes, the Fan Club President’s friend has heard of AC/DC; no she hasn’t heard of Van Halen, but she knows a bit more about Iron Maiden because they played here not so long ago and there are still tattered posters on the city’s walls to prove it. I want to ask her what she really thinks about the Russian troops on the streets I saw earlier while window shopping, how she feels about not being able to buy certain records because her government won’t let her, but it was neither the time nor the place.

Instead, we agree that Frank Zappa is pretty good, and I make my excuses and do a runner in the general direction of the champagne.

True story: British person walks into a Budapest record store and asks, Do you have any Queen records? No, replies the shop assistant, who then asks hopefully, do you?

A few hours after the reception, myself and fellow journalists along with Brian May and entourage are closeted in a small room adjacent to a hotel’s underground disco-floorshow, getting into some serious Schnapps appreciation and snickering as the ghastly live entertainment murders ‘A Kind of Magic’ (no doubt intended as a serious accolade for the VIP in their midst).

Queen, it seems, don’t do interviews much nowadays. And their relationship with the British music press has been virtually non-existent over the last few years.

Yet, when the room empties because a stripper threatens to perform, Brian is quite happy to stay seated in the corner and explain the reasons behind this whole fairly incredible episode in the band’s history.

“Not for long though,” Brain warns, with a laugh, “as I intend to get seriously shit-faced tonight!”

“We like going places where it’s a challenge,” he starts, in his extremely listenable, mild-mannered way, “going to odd corners and doing things which we haven’t done before. What happened with Budapest was the same, in essence, as what happened with South America. Someone comes along and says, You’re huge in ‘X’, why don’t you go and play there and play?

It turned out that our records have been leaking into this place for a long time from various places, because you’re not allowed to buy many legitimate albums in this country. They said we could do the football stadium for maybe three or four nights.

Within the group, we have various little areas we get involved in, and Budapest was something I got excited about, so I came here very early on. I talked to various people and tried to find out if it was for real, if it was really going to happen. All these people were saying that it was going to open up a new world, and that they could guarantee at least one night at the stadium.”

Why was there only one night?

“The politburo got nervous. They don’t like too many people being in one place at one time at all, and the excuse was that there was a motorbike meeting going on next door on the other nights we wanted.”

Are you happy with the film?

“Um,…. Yes. We learnt this Hungarian folk song, we spent three days learning the bloody thing, and that was the turning point of the gig. They hadn’t known how to react, but then they realised we were serious: they knew that we knew where we were, and that we really cared where we were.

The genuine audience reaction was fucking deafening at that point but that doesn’t really come over in the film. It all changed then it was genuine contact.”

A fact confirmed by someone at the gig, who told me that she watched tears spring into grown men’s eyes.

Brian tells about a TV interview he did earlier in the day, another illustration of the regime behind the Iron Curtain.

“I was all prepared to do an in-depth interview and all they wanted was a ten-second quote. They asked me if I’d seen the final film and I said not in its final form, only in the cutting room and mixing. Then they said fine, that’s enough, thank you very much. I wanted to do it again, so they asked me the same question. I answered that it was very important technically, a lot different from what Westerners would do, and that in the Iron Curtain countries it’s going to be great!

"They said, Iron Curtain?!”

And here Brian’s mouth drops and his eyes bulge in mock horror.

“You can’t say that!”

Did you think this year might be such a success? That Queen still had the power?

“You never know until you’ve sold the tickets, never ever.

Wembley went as fast as they could open the sacks of mail. A lot of people do as much as they can do, the look at the returns and they say we can do another night here or whatever. That’s not the way we are.

Freddie gives, and I’ll be careful what I say here because it can sound corny, but he gives so completely of himself, every night and he can only do it a certain number of times. We sold out Wembley twice, we could have done a couple more, to be honest, but we didn’t because Freddie’s voice would have gone and then you let people down.

We gauge it according to what Freddie can do, because he’s the pivot of what it’s all about. It’s a democracy and we all do our bit, but it all depends on Fred being able to deliver on the night. He’s the medium through which it all happens. It’s all channelled through Freddie so we look after him.”

Do you see a lot of each other?

“When we want to. You know when you have neighbours, I believe you should have high fences between the houses. Not because you don’t like the neighbour, but because you should choose when you want to see them.

That’s the way we are. The subject of how groups communicate with each other intrigues m, I’ve seen so many groups be great and split up because they hated each other.

There are times when you do hate each other, but we’ve learned to circumvent it. The way you get around it is not ringing up the manager and saying, I hear that so and so is doing this, well fuck that.

I’ve learned the lesson, and when I feel that something’s going on the wrong course I ring up whoever is relevant and usually it’s Fred. It’s a very odd relationship, but when things get very bad and it looks like we’re going to break up or whatever. I talk to Fred and say, This is stupid, shall we have a chat?

Usually it gets worked out, and it’s very valuable to me. If you can preserve a bit of magic, in spite of all the problems that occur……”

Magic being the operative word…..

“Sorry, that was unintentional. I think that, er I’ve forgotten what the question was.”

And so have I, and anyway, the room is re-filling with an even drunker collection of journalists and entourage.

The next morning, or a few hours later that morning to be exact, Magic: Queen In Budapest opened at the city’s major cinema at nine o’clock, the first of none sold-out screenings that day.

The film is now showing seven times a day, which makes you wonder what all those people do all day, or should be doing. And no doubt it will continue that way until the populace are saturated with it. But I suspect viewers will return for third, fourth and fifth visits to re-live an experience which to them is absolutely awesome; to you or I almost as common as breathing.

Me, I’m just happy to get off on May’s gloriously fluid guitar overkill, while remembering that is a sound that may have given some bored, frustrated Hungarian kid a whole new way of looking at things.

Rock ‘n’ roll is the best propaganda the West will probably ever have.

hi i don't watch football but lots of football blogs are talking about this super league thing and i'm interested to know what's happening. do you mind explaining to me what is it and why is everyone angry about it?

sure! what follows is a very poor explanation i’m sorry

basically, every football season we have the champions league (UCL) hosted by UEFA. participants include the top four of the bigger domestic leagues and the champions of the smaller leagues (e.g. real madrid, barcelona, atletico madrid, and sevilla qualified based on their standings in la liga, the spanish league, but only slavia prague of czech qualified for ucl this season). there is more to the determination of the participants but i’m just keeping it simple since it’s not super relevant

through this system, participants are generally determined by merit. a club might be in the ucl one season but might not qualify the next. it’s all dependent on quality of performance.

yesterday, though, 12 very popular (i won’t say biggest because lol) clubs in europe announced that they had formed the European Super League (ESL). these include the “big six” clubs of the premier league (english league), the popular teams of spain/la liga (real madrid, barcelona, atletico), and the popular teams of italy/serie a (juventus, ac milan, inter milan). essentially, they’re all breaking away from the UCL to do this.

how this super league works is that these 12 teams will simply never not qualify! they’re in there forever. there’s five qualification spots but the primary point is that there’s no relegation no qualification for these 12 teams etc it’s just the “big dogs” all gathering together so they can only play one another.

no passion or spirit or merit is involved in this.

most critically though, not only are the “founders” of this super league (florentino perez, andrea agnelli, joel glazer, who are the presidents of real madrid, juventus, and manchester united respectively) all billionaire businessmen, many of the other clubs involved are backed by that sort of money (e.g. manchester city with its “oil money,” chelsea with its billionaire businessman owner roman abramovich).

so, as you can imagine, they’re all acting in the main interest of what most businessmen are focused on.

$$$$$$$$$$

by forming their own super league, these businessmen clubs obtain access to greater control over TV deals and money rewards. they no longer have to compete nor share anything with “smaller” teams. they’re hoarding the cash for themselves.

also? fucking jp morgan is financing the damn thing!

summarily, this is just a lil football monopoly they’re constructing. which is such a shame for football because it’s turning a very beloved sport into very little more than a money machine. and it hurts especially since admittedly, these are some very popular (okay fine i’ll say it, “big”) clubs involved who have tremendous followings. yes, there are a number of fans who really do oppose this (as you have seen), but there are also some who just do not give a fuck. they’ll watch their club wherever they play, doesn’t matter the ethics, the principles, whatever behind it. so if the super league proves successful... well. i really hope not.

UEFA, and it seems many domestic leagues, are doing what they can to stop this but really it’s just a bunch of threats (e.g. threats to kick these clubs out of their domestic leagues, deduct points, kick them out of the UCL, strip them of their badges, ban players of these clubs from competing in national tournaments like the world cup). UEFA’s not such a great organization either but at the moment i guess they’re the lesser evil. we’ve yet to see whether UEFA will uphold any of these threats should developments with the ESL continue.

some players have already spoken out (bruno fernandes of manchester city, ander herrera of paris saint germain) but there’s not really much else we can do beside sit and wait to watch football meet its demise see what happens.

- zoe is THE postergirl for “pretending you’re famous in the shower and being interviewed”, which is cool, we all do it, except zoe doesn’t limit herself to the shower, nor is she silent. many times ava has come home to find zoe in the kitchen telling an invisible oprah a highly exaggerated version of her life: something about kieu my once being SO lovesick zoe thought she had a fever and had to carry her to the hospital, bridal-style, and also there were zombies. it’s an easy way to make nora laugh too, but on her worst days, zoe will hold her and when she’s calm, give an “off the record interview” where she details why she loves her sister, the strongest person she knows

- she writes fan-fiction. it used to be self-insert type stuff, you know, “my mom sold me to one direction” and the like, but actually...really really good? she had a solid wattpad fan-base for a reason. nora used to make her story covers on photoshop. she sticks to ao3 now, posting devastatingly gorgeous 30k pieces once every six months or so that garner their own mini fandoms. i’m not going to say what medias she’s writing for, but i’m not ruling out a certain cursed never-ending CW show, nor something completely different and wild like....RPF about the buzzfeed unsolved guys or whatever. or maybe less famous, very niche buzzfeed people which makes it better/worse (she gets her own ‘10 Lines In This Fanfic About Our Employees That Will Make You Cry Into A Pillow And Demand We Start A Union’ article)

- when the instas went on their social media detox / camping retreat / whatever the fuck it was, zoe enjoyed herself more than she thought she would. they were there to help constantin, yes, but it was healing for her, too. she, kieu my, and finn shared a tent, and on the last night, she stayed awake far longer than she should’ve, listening to their breathing, listening to the trees. if she concentrated hard enough, she could make everything fade away until she felt, for a strange, single moment, that she was the only person in the entire world. it was honestly comforting, all that peace and quiet and numbness, and yet, when asked about her exhaustion the next day, she says she stayed up on guard to protect them from any bears or serial killers; ismail immediately pretends to stab finn (“i was the killer all along!”), and amidst all the ensuing dramatic chaos, zoe thinks: i am very glad to not be alone. i am very glad to be alive.

sékou:

- with an older brother and two older sisters, sékou’s the ‘baby’ of the family but they don’t baby or other him at all. they’re all close, despite the miles between them: his parents came with him to canada, though his dad, a doctor (and his son’s biggest defender, especially when it came to getting diagnosed within an ableist, racist healthcare system) had to stay in paris a little longer to sort out work stuff with the pandemic, meaning he and his mom spent the first few months alone - “but not lonely!” she says every morning over breakfast; she doesn’t mind cooking it because she loves him and he helps with dinner anyways, as that’s how he unwinds after school. dealing with numbers in recipes helps him stay sharp whilst allowing him to relax and have fun

- other unwinding techniques include IT-related commissions, video editing, art history, philosophy, and, of course, urbex. since it’s canon that la mif are too depressed to urbex now that he’s gone, i’ll say it’s the opposite for him. he does urbex in canada, and it’s nice to finally be with people who follow maps and put safety first and are rather clinical - though not necessarily boring - about their approach. he becomes the president of his uni’s urbex club, the quickest anyone’s ever risen through the ranks. still, sometimes down in those tunnels it’s dark enough that it’s easy to pretend he’s back in paris, the indecipherable shapes around him his old friends. he tags their initials on a wall, and never tells them, his own little secret

- determined to not fall out of touch to an irreparable degree though, sékou sends la mif letters/packages, often very personalized: it starts with, like, memes for jo, film recs for max, political articles for maya, positive affirmations for lola etc, before becoming an international small gifts exchange because everyone involved is extra. noticing two new guys on the group insta, sekou thinks it’d be rude to exclude them, figuring there’s no harm in sending a tiny boxing glove keychain he saw at the store the other day, or some sewing tips his eldest sister, a fashion designer, passes along. bc skamfr is often an unintentional comedy (eg: the car), everybody in la mif assumes they’re the only one getting sent stuff bc nobody talks about it out of guilt (“what if he’s not sending them things...”). so it’s quite a shock when sékou flies back home for summer and he and redouane are like, immediately going in for a hug, the first to do so, and bilal presents sékou with a homemade bowtie. max is very pouty about it but max is pouty about most things so jo elbows him in the ribs and they all hash it out at maya’s that night; sékou takes one look at the place and thinks: i’m glad your taste in decor is better than your wardrobe, and then thinks: i’m not sure where i want to live, there are so many things i want to do and discover and become, but there’s no where else i’d rather call home right now (is he talking about the city or his friends?? you decide!)

Wait wait wait wait wait. I feel like it’s my duty to submit my evidence for Seokjin into this discourse (even tho literally no one asked me too 😂)

1) unstable arsonist (and possible stalker but shhh it’s fine he loves her) who has a soft spot for reader. Who doesn’t love a good ‘he’s sort of toxic but not for you’ trope??? If it’s just me then 😬😂 I just outed myself in the group chat bad

2) she trusted him with the pill AND with seeing her have a moment in the bathroom. Aka she lets herself be vulnerable with him

3) for someone who chooses fire as his choice of a weapon he is surprisingly meticulous and level headed in a crisis. When he heard the news about Yadiel he immediately said put me in coach. We love a man of action.

4) her emotions are always described like fire that she can’t control WELL who better to help with that than the resident arson just saying 👀 I dare say that’s even poetic in a sense 🕵🏽‍♀️

Tae is great, Jk is great (and the ultimate softboi™ we love when they come out on top), Jimin is great….really they’re all great buuuuuuttt where’s the spice??? 🧐 Jimin has been an understandably pouty bb and there’s just no spark between Tae and her anymore. I feel like they were both hanging on to the past. I have to admit that I do still think Jk has a shot at her having a revelation but I’m team Jin all the way (that is until B hits us smack in the face with her grand master plan and changes my mind if I’m wrong about Jin bc I do not trust her 😂)

Samuel Song grew up for the first half of his life in sunny California-- Silver Lake, LA, to be exact. He would soon discover that he liked to go by Sam, though he’d respect and treasure his Korean name, Hansol, when the time came. He was a bright kid, full of life and joy and eager to do just about anything. He was always the first one to raise his hand in school or volunteer himself to make new friends. His parents loved the fact that their son was so lively and sweet, and that was in part due to their nurturing and loving nature as parents too.

They both worked in tech, very skilled and adept in their field with great jobs that allowed them to take great care of their home and child. As great as they were at their jobs, they never let it get in the way of being good parents, of making sure that their home life was as open and compassionate and understanding as they believed it should be.

He was three years old when his family welcomed a baby girl, and Sam has probably never had a greater happiness than being a big brother to Ingrid. He took care of her from the get-go, looking after her as a toddler, and always watching over her as they aged. While their parents had the money to hire babysitters, which they did, Sam still liked to always be taking care of Ingrid throughout his life, making sure she had everything she needed to be happy, or at least tried his best to.

Sam was the kind of kid that excelled in most things. He tried out for practically every sport there was, his parents supporting him throughout all the different seasons, and joined as many clubs that caught his eye as he could, something his sharp intellect helped with. His school career would see him as a star of the basketball team, student council treasurer, and president of the debate club all in the same semester, every year looking just as crazy as the last. He couldn’t help it, he just loved to be around others, a part of a team, making his mark. All this work would even help him graduate high school a year early.

At ten years old, his parents got an offer from another tech company, an offer they couldn't refuse, and the family relocated to Great Falls, Virginia across the country. The Song family moved in next door to the owners of the tech conglomerate that hired them, Reign Technology, and Ingrid and Sam met their new childhood friend, Régine Ren-- Rei for short. Despite the kids’ different personalities, they all grew up to care for each other, becoming close friends for pretty much the rest of their lives.

Sam adapted very easily to his new life in Virginia, jumping into his new school with just as much vigor as he always had, making himself out to be the ‘fun new kid’ until he was just as much a part of that community as anyone else.

The only thing was, as much as he enjoyed every activity, as good as he was at them, there was never anything that he truly loved, that he thought could carry him for the rest of his life. What he loved was being a part of something, but nothing in particular ever really called to him. He’d watch in the coming years as Ingrid would find her passion, and he’d be her number one fan, but he’d always look at her and wonder how it must feel to find your dream.

He went off to college, picking something that sounded exciting on paper, but still didn’t light a fire in him like he wanted it to. But he wanted to be able to think that he chose the right thing, and so he continued to follow it through, because, naturally, he was good at it anyway. Sam was home for the summer after his sophomore year of college when Ingrid confided in him that she’d found something huge.

After the younger Song sibling went on a visit to their parents’ workplace, Ingrid had found something scary, something that convinced her their parents were some sort of villains working for evil masterminds-- or at least tech that seemed to imply that to a creative and impressionable mind. Sam believed her immediately, his own young imagination running wild and the siblings spent the next few weeks trying to prove that their parents weren’t who they said they were.

When they thought they finally had enough evidence, they confronted them, but were met with something entirely different-- and thankfully a little more tame. Their parents confessed that they were actually retired spies, and their jobs at Reign Tech were due to that. Suddenly everything made more sense, even though it hardly made sense that their normal, PTA-member parents could have had any past as cool and exciting as espionage. There was one more catch, however.

Not only were their parents ex-spies, they were actually connected to one of the biggest names in the history of espionage-- and assassination, actually. Sam and Ingrid’s father was a Blackthorne descendant, though for the safety of his young children, had asked his family to hide that side of them from the Song kids. Sam knew the name Blackthorne, but only as the last name of the cousin he loved so much, the fun uncles, and the serious grandpa from his dad’s side. And now he was realizing that all along they were actually one of the most prominent families in the spy community.

What’s more was, well, the Blackthornes had their own school. While it took some genuine debating and convincing of his parents, it was mostly a no-brainer to Sam. This is what he was meant to do, this was why he had never found a true purpose in life. He was destined to be a spy. His father warned him that Blackthorne would be unlike any other school he’d ever been to or heard of, that it would be the hardest thing he’d have to endure, and that his ancestry might hurt him more than it would help. But Sam was determined, hopeful that he had the guts to handle it.

So, in 2018, he enrolled as a first year at Blackthorne, and just as he had expected, it was nothing like he was expecting. Luckily, he did have third year and cousin Emmett Blackthorne at his side, who took the brunt of the family name and all its hurdles as well as provided him with a kind face to stick by when he didn’t know what he was doing. Sam was content to stay in Emmett’s shadow, the heir apparent, who he looked up to just as much. He spent his year at Blackthorne wrestling with how absolutely unbearable training was, the looks of showing up as some unknown Blackthorne, and a shocking revelation: he was not good at this.

Sam had always excelled at everything he’d tried his hand at, annoyingly so, and it only frustrated him further that the one time he was sure he’d found what he wanted to do with his life, he couldn’t master it on the first try, and had to work twice as hard as everyone else to stay afloat. So much for the Blackthorne blood, he thought, and it came to a head when he heard whispers of what his namesake’s school asked of boys in order to graduate. By the end of the year, he was sure he couldn’t survive and he was not going back.

And that was when news hit that the school’s doors would be closing forever and its sister school Gallagher Academy, would be opening its doors to all genders. The next step was clear to Sam, who didn’t want to give up espionage. Because as grueling as Blackthorne was, and as hard as it was to wrap his head around the fact that he wasn’t naturally gifted at it, he couldn’t imagine ever doing anything else. So, he transferred to Gallagher in 2019, and fell in love with the school immediately.

Ever since, he’s been steadily climbing up his own personal mountain, training hard and trying his best to master what he should have a direct familial line to. Aside from how seriously he takes his schoolwork, he’s still bright and goofy as ever, and Sam knows if he ever loses that side of him, that’s when he won't be able to pursue this any longer. But for now, he’s vibing and thriving!

hobi & hope: hobi is literally the biggest hope stan like?? he’s treating the graduation ceremony more like a concert and he’s acting like an insane fangirl but he doesn’t CARE because he wants everyone to know that hope is his daughter!!! the parents sitting next to him got a little irritated because every five seconds hobi would lean over and be like: hey u see dat girl! ya she’s my daughter! she’s on the cheer team!! and they were just like sir we don’t even know who you aRE!!! you bet ur ass he ordered a customized t-shirt that says’ hope’s world!!!!!’ and the shirt is peach coloured and he even wrapped fairy lights around himself aNd he has a matching baseball cap (with her face on it of course) sitting on the top of his head AND he has these little flags that he’s waving around viciously when hope’s name is called!!! he’s so proud of his baby!! and also he’s pretty proud of himself for managing to keep her in high school and for raising her to become this sweet and caring and optimistic young lady!!! as soon as hope got up from her seat to get her diploma hobi BLASTED an air horn and startled literally everyone so in hope’s photo her smile is very sheepish because she’s only slightly embarrassed by her dad but also she loves him so much and loves that he’s her #1 fan no matter what :’)

ok i’ll do my best, though i don’t know how good i am at making people like stuff i like 😂 i don’t have too much in common with a lot of people so that might not bode well 😂

my family are huge american football and baseball fans but nothing ever really stuck for me? i like watching american football when My Team is playing but otherwise i’m a little neutral. i am and have always been an olympics fiend (especially winter) in a large part because i really like the international-ness of it, so keep that in mind.

i was unaware of the world cup until one summer when i was actually in france during the world cup and the vibe was fantastic. like there was just so much energy and EVERYONE was excited and people were smashing bottles in the street cause france won a game. once i got back home i kept watching the games. the 2014 world cup caught my interest because the final was two countries i Enjoy for various reasons. also @ariannenymerosmartell An American Who Likes Soccer/Football watched that game with me and she was a Fan of the german nt and it was exciting to talk about it with someone who was excited!

in the 2018 world cup i watched almost every game including like france vs. belgium on the crosstown bus on my phone, and i got caught up in Croatia Fever (after hating them for beating argentina) and that made me Start Getting Into It for real. i also loved the women’s world cup last summer too.

like with the olympics i love the international aspect; even when it’s not national team break the clubs are composed of all sorts of people. i love that the sport is so incredibly universal. someone like me who, like i said before, doesn’t really have a lot in common with most people--when there’s a football reference i get it! when someone is talking about a game i can easily participate! it’s amazing? and for someone who has a shitty attention span for watching things on a screen, the game moves Fast and has lots of legit cool moves (like this one) and footwork and technique and (hopefully) strategy, and for someone who gets really stressed when things have no defined time span, you know approximately how long a regular club game is gonna last no matter what.

there is a huge community of fans that isn’t just one particular demographic, which i also love, because some “fandoms” get very insular cause everyone is like, a queer afab nerd, you kow what i mean.

and as for the dudes, well. i like a good-looking dude, what can i say? and the footballers have an Aesthetic that sits well with me, and there’s Lots of fuckin drama queens and people praying before matches and i’m Into that. as for why each of my favs is my fav, that’s a whole separate post, lol.

also as you get more familiar with the games you can start having opinions about refs, managers, club presidents, commentators...it’s infinite ~

1. Is there something you have been trying to learn lately? I’ve been participating in a Bible study the past few weeks.

2. If you ever feel like you are different from your extended family, in which ways is this? Uhhh, I mean I have quite a big extended family so I’m different from them in a lot of ways. They’re of various ages and they’re all different like I can’t group them all together.

3. When you think about your future career, do you envision yourself becoming the head honcho or CEO? If not, why not? I have no idea what my future entails career wise (or otherwise). I certainly don’t envision myself becoming the CEO or head of anything, though. I don’t want to be, either.

4. Is there something that you are sort of weird about talking about? Like, a thing that other people find casual, but you feel uncomfortable when the subject comes up? Politics. 5. Can you think of a time when you seriously misjudged a music artist based on their name? Hm. I’m not sure if just by their name alone without knowing anything about them. I know that if I’m familiar with an artist and not particularly a fan of theirs, I’ll probably assume I won’t like new music they come out with either. I likely won’t even listen to it.

6. Do you ever make negative comments about other body types? How does it make you feel when you see or hear negative comments about your body type, or a physical trait that you have (even when it’s not directed at you)? I can’t say that I never have before. And yes, I hear negative comments about my body type often, like how people who are thin like me are “sickly” and “boney” and how we must not be eating and stuff like that. I’m very self-conscious about my weight and being too thin has caused me health problems.

7. If you are in a situation where you feel like you are being attacked or not respected, how easy or difficult is it for you to stay and keep your head rather than leave in a huff? Uh, I think I would probably leave a situation like that.

9. When you think about how attractive you feel and your favorite features, are you comparing yourself to a societal ideal? I don’t feel attractive at all, my self-esteem is shit and yes I do compare myself to others.

10. If you have a favorite song right now: What is it? How did you first hear it? Why do you like it so much? “Be Happy” by Dixie D’Amelio and “Overwhelmed” by Royal & the Serpent.

11. Have you ever had someone that has been your friend for a while come to you and tell you they had romantic feelings for you? How did you respond, and did the friendship survive? Kind of. I was friends with a guy in high school who I liked at the time, but he didn’t feel that way about me. Then a few years later he started showing interest in me and wanted to date, but I had long since moved on and didn’t feel that way about him anymore. In fact, I was interested in someone else. So, it was kind of awkward for a bit. He would flirt and bring it up a lot and I was just like, ...no. At one point he kept asking for a kiss at least and I finally gave in. Anyway, we remained friends and he moved on as well and dated other people and we were cool.

12. Hypothetically speaking, if Hillary Clinton were running for President as a democrat against Chris Christie as a republican in 2016, who do you predict would win the election? >> ---

13. When you are getting to know someone new online (particularly someone male), how cautious are you of the possibility that they are serial killer/kidnapper? I’m cautious of anyone I talk to online. Everyone should be. But that goes for people you meet “in real life” as well.

14. If you are talking to someone that you want to get to know, what are your go-to conversation topics? What subject makes you disappointed when another person isn’t interested in or knowledgable about it? I kinda just have to get a vibe and see where the conversation goes. I suppose typical stuff like interests and whatnot come up, though.

15. Say you have a lot of free time and want to join a club or class. You are browsing postings on local bulletin boards and online. What sort of group would you be interested in joining (e.g., book club, game group, crafts, golf lessons, etc.)? I do participate in online Bible studies, which I really enjoy. A book club would be cool, too. Like mystery/psychological thriller book club. Also, we (myself and fellow survey takers on here) have our survey group!

16. Have you ever kissed someone that you didn’t really want to kiss (not assault, just indifference)? Why did you go along with it and how did you feel after? I mentioned that in question 11 not even realizing it was a question later on. But yeah like I said, he kept asking and I finally gave in. I guess I was also curious, wondering if maybe there possibly was something between us. For me, it just felt awkward.

17. Have you recently learned anything about your personality? If not, have you ever consciously tried to change your personality? Hm. I don’t think I have recently.

18. Are you or any of your friends in a sorority or fraternity? Would you be interested in belonging to one? I’m not and never have been. Wasn’t something I was interested in joining. I don’t have any friends, so no I don’t have any in a sorority or fraternity.

19. Can you recall a recent time that you were surprised, but in a bad way? Recently.

20. Do you feel uncomfortable when you receive praise for doing certain things? If so, does this make you less likely to do those things? I mean, it’s nice to hear “good job” and receive encouragement and support. I’m just awkward, so it’s weird for me to hear it. Probably also because I feel like I’m not deserving of it. I’ll downplay it and shift the praise to something else.

21. Do you make spontaneous purchases often or rarely? When you are upset does it make you temporarily happier to buy yourself something new? I haven’t done too much shopping this year, actually. I’ve cut back compared to previous years. I’m finding myself asking myself whether I really need something or telling myself I don’t need it and that I have enough of said thing more often lately, which is good. I can’t say I never give in lol but it’s getting better, I think.

22. If you have to wake up early for something, what time is just TOO early for you to be there and be presentable and sentient? Have you ever had to be somewhere that early? Honestly, now if I have to be somewhere in the morning I just stay up. For most of this year I’ve been staying up until like 7 or 8AM, sometimes 9, for whatever reason and my appointments fall within those times. It’s easier for me to stay up instead of attempt some sleep because then it’ll just be harder for me to get up and I won’t want to. Now, that doesn’t mean that I’m sentient haha. As for presentable... debatable. ha.

23. Have the majority of your romantic relationships started with a physical attraction or a deeper connection? I’ve only had 2 relationships and one started more with a physical attraction and the other with a connection cause we had been friends for awhile beforehand.

24. Do you ever catch any of those conspiracy shows on Animal Planet, like Bigfoot hunting or proof of Mermaids? Do those shows make your more or less likely to believe in the existence of such creatures? I don’t watch ‘em.

25. Did you ever write a fan letter to a celebrity? How about submit something to a magazine? Yeah, during my preteen years I wrote a couple.

I think after the first night, Dear would be a little concerned about Jimin and would focus a lot of her efforts on trying to assure him that he’s done so well not only in his performance but in handling the last few months. I would imagine they would have probably had a good number of conversations throughout the pandemic about Jimin’s frustrations and worries. It would be a lot of words of affirmation and affection, just trying to express to him what literally everyone else thinks. “You’re an incredible person, on stage, off stage, you’re just the best person I’ve ever known” and “I know your fans were blown away by you, you did so well” and she’d probably turn some compliments into jokes to see him smile like “you know, when you move like that on stage, you send everyone into a frenzy. I would know, I am the president of the Park Jimin fan club after all”

I think at the conclusion of night two she would definitely cook him all sorts of foods and maybe even give him sweet little massages and lots of kisses and hugs. But she’d give him so many compliments. I think giving sincere compliments would be her main way of showing her love and care, paired with small affectionate touches. These two tend to be the type who get worked up through emotional intimacy so with all the compliments they would probably start to get heated and she would absolutely focus on him. Like tonight is all about Jimin, just sit back and enjoy, Chim. During sex is when she would really start complimenting him for how fucking sexy he was on stage. “Are you aware of your effect on people while dancing like that, Darling? I think you are” and “all of this man just for me, I’m so lucky”

&&. ( scout marie whitmore ), the ( 25 ) year old ( daughter ) of the president of ( the united states ). she is often confused with ( zoey deutch ). some say that she is ( sarcastic & indolent ), but she is ( nonjudgmental & affable ).

scout was 100% named after scout finch from to kill a mockingbird, and it might be the only thing she’d thank her mother for because she loves her name. her mom probably had the all-americanness of it in mind -- thinking politically before she even got into politics -- but scout just likes the way it sounds.

she was really young when her mom decided to become a full time snake, so it’s all scout remembers her being. at first she was raised very carefully, following her mother’s instructions to the letter, but scout’s always had a sense of humor and absolutely no patience, so it didn’t take much for her to step outside the confines of her designated area. she started acting out pretty early on but in harmless ways, like talking too much in class, asking too many questions, not listening. totally innocuous, but it was enough for her mom to give up on her quickly, especially after her younger sister came along.

scout’s her brother’s biggest fan, so as parker got older and started to take the right steps in their mother’s eyes, one day scout resolved to follow them. she was young and unable to fully understand why her mother was never warm with her, why she never seemed to want to spend time with her. back then, the solution seemed clear: parker did what their mother wanted, and she paid attention to him. if scout did what she wanted, she’d pay attention to her too. so she got into ballet (which she was awful at), learned how to play piano, went to an all-girls boarding school in upstate new york. for a while, she suppressed the wilder parts of herself, only allowing them to come out with her siblings and very close friends.

when their mom outed her own son to help her campaign, scout realized that all of her attempts to fit the family mold were complete bullshit. nothing she or either of her siblings did would ever be seen as anything but opportunities. opportunities to paint a prettier picture of the perfect american family, to gain social status, to win an election. the realization led to her to completely resent her mother and their relationship. her mother would never love her for what she was or what she tried to be. there was no way she could win.

so she dropped ballet and piano, studied computer science at stanford instead of political science or international relations, played club softball, acted like a normal american college student. she learned how to leverage the family’s publicity in her favor; her mother couldn’t really complain publicly, because what was so wrong about her daughter studying computer science or trying to get the full college experience? they were in america, after all, where everyone should have the same opportunities and freedom of choice. the nation’s leaders and their families should be a prime example of that. as long as she wasn’t completely acting out, there was a lot she could get away with.

after college, scout moved to new york city and quickly got a job as a game designer. in russian doll, natasha lyonne’s character has a really chill job designing cool video games. she talks back to her bosses and works from home a lot and the job’s essentially an afterthought for her. that’s the kind of job scout got. and she just sort of plateaued there. she loved the city and she liked her work, so why do anything else? she still had a security detail with her most of the time, but she actually became friends with them so she ended up not minding too much. occasionally she was also flown out for events the entire family had to go to, but learned to just grin and bear it.

the catalyst for her leaving the states and ending up in phuket with parker was her mother breaking the strange stalemate they’d always found themselves in over the years. when she was asked about her children during a tv interview, she said that she “wished scout would think about the family more” and that she “respected her freedom but worried about how she was using it,” playing the part of a concerned mother and painting scout, who the public really knew little about, as an ungrateful hedonist. scout completely snapped, flying to dc for an exhausting argument with her mother before she packed quickly and left the country to join parker in thailand.

finally i’m getting ‘round to barbie’s bio!! she’s a charming native that loves this town more than she hates it, but only by a small margin. she’s the secretary to the mayor, but her father was a disciple so she’s... neutral on the club. wolves, tho? gross. her mom is also a little infamous around town for partying too much, even into her fifties, sort of like lorelai from gilmore girls if she was chaotic and a former biker groupie. anyways, here’s her details:

content warnings: death, implied bipolar disorder

born october 20th, 1988 in charming, california. her mother, also named barbara goodwin, was new to the town when she met ty. she didn’t plan on staying long, accepting a temporary job to fill in as a substitute teacher that was on maternity leave, but it was love at first sight for the two of them. she didn’t know he was a biker until two weeks into their relationship, a fact that ty kept from her. she was only twenty three when she moved to charming, ty a bit older, but she decided to forgive him for lying. by that time, she was madly in love with him... or at least she thought so. the relationship didn’t last as long as her pregnancy. they were constantly on and off, fighting daily, and when barbie was born, barb decided ty would have nothing to do with his daughter. (that didn’t last very long.)

barbie grew up with her father wandering in and out of her life, sometimes living with her and her mom, sometimes not seeing him for months, depending on what was going on with the club at any particular time. it was mostly just her and her mother, and barb only being in her mid 20s when barbie was born, quickly felt like she was losing her youth. she would party regularly, leaving barbie with the elderly neighbor, usually at the clubhouse when she liked ty and la luna’s when she didn’t. for the most part, it was just barb and little barb (as she was known the devil’s disciples and most locals), and they grew up more like sisters than mother and daughter. her mother was her best friend, except when she wasn’t.

barbie was only thirteen when her father died, though it had been a good year since the last time she saw him, during a time when relations between the devil’s disciples and wicked wolves were especially violent. dying in a violent shootout, the president at the time told her that he died whispering barbie’s name, but she finds that hard to believe. of course she was devastated that her father had died, but it felt more like the death of an uncle or distant cousin than one half of the couple that brought her to life.

things were a little different after her father’s death. her mother was still a part-time party girl, relying on her daughter as her only confidant, but she got a little more paranoid. she wasn’t worried about the club, or the gang, so much, it was just the world in general. one moment, big barb was carefree, the next she was obsessively checking the windows were still locked. barbie never grew up with a very rosy view of the disciple’s, but it was confusing how her mother could go from loving them deeply to hating them even more over the course of a day. it wasn’t an easy time to live in charming, but barbie grew to fear everyone, not just gang violence.

it was only a few short years before she got to high school after her dad died, and barbie mostly kept to herself. she was embarrassed over her mother’s public antics, scared of being hurt, and was one of the few black girls in school; all a recipe for an introverted, shy teenager. though she had loose ties to the disciples through her father, she was a chronic good girl, and that carried throughout her college years. she saw what alcohol did to her mother, knew how her father died, she wanted to stay as far away from the seedy underbelly of charming as she possibly could.

not too far, though. she stayed at home during her college education, commuting to fresno for school. desperately she wanted to leave charming, but she feared what would happen to her mother if no one was around to rein her in. completing a bachelor’s degree in communications at fresno pacific university, a major she chose simply because it could lead to many different careers, she found herself unemployed back in her mother’s house after graduation.

barbie landed in the mayor’s office by accident—not literally, but she was searching job listings in the fresno/charming area and came across one for a file clerk at the charming mayor’s office. hired after one interview, she really only intended to be there until she found something better, but slowly she started getting promoted until she was finally in the actual office. working as the mayor’s secretary for the past five years, barbie is incredibly content with her job. for now, at least, she’s absolutely fine where she is. (secretly, she hopes to be the mayor one day. not now, but maybe one day.)

before she had a vaguely cordial relationship with the disciples, and disapproved of the wolves, but since working in the mayor’s office, she’s grown to heavily dislike both. she wants charming to be a nice place to live, but it wasn’t ever that nice to begin with, was it? as far as either crew or gang knows, she’s neutral.

has a very bubbly personality, but it’s mostly just a front. she feels like she can never be angry because her mother relied on her so much as a child and it’s carried over into adulthood. also has major trust issues because of her relationship with her parents, grew up thinking that anyone that was talking to her just wanted something from her. doesn’t have a lot of friends, or at least she doesn’t have a lot of close friends. mostly hangs out with coworkers or fellow i-don’t-want-to-talk-about-my-trauma-ever-so-let’s-talk-about-real-housewives-of-nyc people.

moved into her own apartment, but frequently goes to her mother’s house to check on her/have dinner. and by frequently i mean like six times a week. doesn’t drink more than a glass of wine if she is going to drink, so most people think she’s really boring (she kinda is lol, but we love her).

you either know her as barbie or little barb, never just barb (please call me barbie, barb is my mom’s name. yes she named me after herself.) or barbara. sometimes will answer to babs.

kiiiiind of judgmental, oops. doesn’t think crew or gang members are inherently bad people but it’s more like ooh no baby what is you doing.jpg sort of thing. distrusting but incredibly lonely, whomp whomp. a big fan of passive aggressive smiles. kinda... fake, but in like an innocent way.

wanted stuffs:

childhood friends: barbie grew up in charming, so if ur muse is a lifelong local, they probably know barbie! she’s very shy but super nice, kinda kept to herself growing up, but very ride-or-die until you do something she thinks is Wrong and Amoral.

a best friend: c’mon. this girl needs a bestie, a least one person for her to feel close to and share her real emotions with. except a lot of stopping by ur place of work to go out to lunch and random gifts because Gifts Are Her Love Language.

exes: though barbie is super like... not forthcoming with her emotions, she’s very bubbly and like come the fuck on, she’s a smoke show. i’m imagining someone that really liked her but found her forced cheery attitude annoying and she refused to meaningfully commit because she was scared of the feelings.

childhood enemy: someone that didn’t like barbie growing up, for any reason (except racism obviously lmao). they could’ve been a fellow club brat or maybe they just thought she was weak bc she was so quiet and shy when they were kids. who knows! i just like antagonistic relationships!

a roommate: she moved out of her mom’s house years ago and has a good government job but she still needs help to pay the rent!! ideally they could be really good friends or maybe they were strangers that have to learn to live together and they’re constantly getting annoyed with each other for like, leaving the bathroom fan on or something. i figure this connection would be with another woman, but it doesn’t have to be!

a surrogate little sister (or bro, or sibling): barbie grew up an only child, but she’s got lots of Big Sister Energy. i’m thinking this will be a connection for someone younger that’s in need of some sisterly guidance, or perhaps a fellow club brat that’s more integrated into the crew/grew up to join and barbie’s like i don’t approve of your choices but i’m here 4 u.

The members of Kage and Kunoichi have been kind of friends in varying capacities since before they even debuted so they’d always greet and bow to each other during shows and events. Nothing really special there. Unless we reach. Which, as you know, is exactly what this blog is for.

Since Anon specifically mentioned members (plural), I will only address moments where multiple members do the teasing.

(2007) Kiba and Naruto are rowdy hype men while the three members are more reserved, except when Sai does weird dances at select performances. Which is why when Kunoichi did their first performance ever at the KChart Music Awards, we can see Sasuke in this fancam (link) looking like he’s reprimanding Kiba, Naruto, and Sai because it distracts him from watching the girls (or just one girl?) perform.

(2010) This Kunoichi fancam from Konoha Music Awards in November (link) shows the girls standing while Rock Lee performs on stage. On Sakura’s side, you can see members of a boy group who keep moving and shuffling around. Another fancam (link) revealed that it was actually Kage members trying to switch places with each other.

So the member order was as follows: Tenten, Hinata, Ino, Sakura, Kiba, Sai, Sasuke, Naruto, Neji. When Kiba realized who he was next to, he walked away and tried to get in between Sasuke and Naruto. The two finally budged after a while, but Kiba was still unsatisfied because Sai was still between Sasuke and Sakura. So he went back and whispered something to Sai who promptly moved away and followed Kiba to stand between Naruto and Sasuke. Sasuke is now beside Sakura. Mission accomplished, guys.

(2011) In this Kunoichi fancam reaction to Kage’s stage on the KChart Music Awards (link), everyone was standing up. Unfortunately, the members were situated at the back, and Sakura, wearing combat boots, was at a height disadvantage. But the members came to her rescue when it was Sasuke’s turn in the spotlight. Ino who was the tallest member of the night thanks to her sky-high platforms, and Tenten the actual tallest member were whispering to Sakura, and looked like they were reporting and giving her a blow-by-blow account of what was happening on stage.

(2013) In this fancam of Kage’s reaction (link) to Sakura accepting the Best Female Solo for Courage at the Golden Leaf Awards, we see Naruto and Kiba who are smirking as they turn to a decidedly blank-faced Sasuke. Neji turns to their direction too, looking mildly exasperated.

SS movie date in Wave Country (2012)

I just needed to update this post in light of new information.

In the Kage Konoha Mountain Villa interview 2012 (the one I linked in the previous post), Sasuke was recorded saying: “I like classic action movies. The most recent one I saw was In a Grove (藪の中 Yabu no Naka).”

Two months prior, Sakura uploaded a video of the instrumental ‘Prologue’ originally from the soundtrack of a film Rokurota. Both In a Grove and Rokurota are films by the director Makino Chikao which led people to speculate if the connection ends there or if there’s more. So I did a little investigating.

Sakura posted the video on the evening of 31 January 2012. During that time, Sakura was in Wave Country where she was a guest performer for Kage’s show in Sector D District. I searched the cinemas around that area and found one that at the time was having a director Makino Chikao retrospective. (You can check out their site here: link) I wasn’t able to see the list of films exhibited to confirm but I have no doubts that both In a Grove and Rokurota were screened there, especially since both films are critically-acclaimed and universally loved. And it’s likely that Sakura and Sasuke went to these screenings together.

Furthermore, you know what’s in front of Kaiza Theatre? An Owson grocery mart, aka the same one where those pictures of Sasuke and Sakura were taken the same year (link). See the side by side comparison (link) and note the same shelves and wall paint. And of course, those photos led to Danzo’s damage control denial of the dating rumors, and then Sasuke’s infamous “[KGE] is just a workplace” statement. Y’all know the rest.

Let me preface this with a little background on Uzumaki Naruto. Naruto and Sasuke are the closest to each other in Kage not only because they are the two youngest members of the group, but also because they started training in KGE in the same year. The other trainee who started the same year they did was none other than Haruno Sakura. The three of them were said to be friendly even after they debuted in their respective groups. And it’s because of this that I believe they are privy to each other’s lives and relationships, and would, like any regular friends, every now and then tease the crap out of each other.

Pink is too obviously referring to Sakura/her signature hair color which is especially obvious since Kunoichi just debuted around the time of this interview, so Naruto changed it to green to prevent Sasuke’s wrath. But you know what else is green? Sakura’s eye color. Thanks, Naruto! Your subtlety is unparalleled.

(2007) KAGE reaction to KUNOICHI performance - MINDBLOWER + BLOOM @ Konoha Music Awards

Sasuke is a famously stoic cold city guy at award shows, especially when sat beside Naruto who dances exuberantly to every other performance. That is, until Kunoichi debuted. Sasuke would begin showing signs of life whenever Kunoichi performed, like foot tapping, some head bobbing here and there, and some stray finger flicking actions during the Mindblower chorus.

Anyway, in this particular performance, Naruto elbow nudges Sasuke on his side (pretty hardly, if Sasuke’s annoyed expression is anything to go by) just as Sakura’s verse is about to come on. (@ 1:32)

(2008) [FULL/ENG SUB] [HD] 080805 Idols Weekly EP 56 - KAGE Part 1

KAGE’s appearance in Idols Weekly where Naruto said he would join Kunoichi because his group kept betraying him, and then he said he would drag Sasuke along with him. He didn’t get to elaborate on why exactly because he was cut off by Sasuke’s glare.

Okay, this is kind of a reach but they were all just previously nailing the Bloom choreography, and then Naruto was dragging Sasuke specifically to join Kunoichi. Why just Sasuke? All of Kage are on friendly terms with Kunoichi members. That’s why I’m inclined to believe Naruto was teasing him because Sasuke has eyes on someone in Kunoichi. And we all know who.

(2009) [Music Bank K-Chart] 2nd Week of January - SN, Sound5

Sakura had the opportunity to host Music Bank for January. At the time, Sasuke and Naruto were promoting their subunit single “The Valley.” On the one episode that month where they performed, during the K-Chart announcement part, you can see Naruto subtly (not really) pushing Sasuke to his right. When the camera switches to wide shot, it appears that Sakura was on standby from hosting duties a few feet away over at Sasuke’s right side the whole time. (@9:42)

(2010) Sasuke was in Snow Country on a personal schedule and posted a rare picture of himself. Well, kind of. It was him looking like a hypebeast cryptid wearing multiple layers of winter clothes and scarves, against the backdrop of flower trees in Land of Spring (Snow Country’s capital). Captioned: ”wish you were here.” (My god he is so basic sometimes, I can’t.)

Anyway, on the said post, Naruto left a comment of around 15 cherry blossom emojis.

Cherry blossom = Sakura. King of subtlety…

Sasuke deletes this post five minutes later (which would have been suspect if he wasn’t such a serial post deleter). But luckily, we still have a screenshot which includes Naruto’s comment.

(Also note that a month prior to the announcement of their engagement, Sasuke and Sakura were reported to have had a rendezvous in Snow country. That place must be significant to them and Naruto being in their inner circle probably knows why this early on.)

Naruto was promoting his solo mini album and did a KLive broadcast where he called some Kage members. During his phone call with Sasuke, out of nowhere, Naruto mentioned Sakura. (@ 40:07)

N: Anyway, Sasuke, aren’t you preparing for your final show this week?

S: Mm.

N: All Kage members are supporting you. Not me, though. But the rest of them do, apparently.

S: Make yourself useful and promote my show.

N: I’ll do you one better. I’ll call Kunoichi and ask them to come to your concert.

S: What?

N: Yeah, I’ll personally pick Sakura-chan up and make sure she’s there.

S: [unintelligible]

N: Sasuke, what?

S: I said you’re an idiot.

(2011) Sakura was reported to have fainted from exhaustion after the last set at Kunoichi’s concert late October 2011. (This was the third time it had happened [that we know of!!!] and it honestly says a lot about what little regard KGE had for their artists.)

Meanwhile, Kage was doing their second to the last fanmeet scheduled in Earth Country. But on that night, Sasuke and Naruto took a red-eye from Iwa to Konoha. There are no pictures, only some K-netizens reports of Sasuke and Naruto entering Konoha General at around 8 am. (Some eyewitness accounts said that Sasuke appeared to be bringing a pillow.) At 10 am the same day, Naruto was spotted in his orange BMW convertible hanging around the KGE building, while Sasuke was nowhere in sight.

It can be surmised that Naruto, being a good friend, accompanied Sasuke so he can visit Sakura. But there’s more.

Konoha General to KGE building is a one-hour drive, but seeing how Naruto got his car and a new set of clothes, he most likely headed to his apartment first, which would add more or less 30 minutes to his journey. If he arrived at 8 am in Konoha General, but was already in KGE building by 10, that would mean he only stayed in the hospital for about 15 to 30 minutes at most.

I imagine what happened was: Naruto accompanied Sasuke from Iwa to Konoha, probably said hi to Sakura for a bit (if she was already conscious by then), and then promptly left them alone to have their moment. :’)

(2011) 30 October. Sasuke’s K-D Magazine photoshoot previews were released. Sakura liked one of the posts from the K-D account. Later, she posted a cute video selfie with heart eyes filter with ねぇ聞こえますか？(Can You Hear Me?) an old love song, playing in the background. Her timeline was probably filled with Sasuke’s pictures that she just had to post some kind of lovey-dovey reaction to it. A few hours later, Naruto commented with a (very knowing) smirking face emoji.

(2013) 8 August. Naruto posted a picture of two mochi (pink and blue) from Amaguriama, with the caption, “Look how sweet my friends are.” He tagged Sasuke in the blue one. Who else could the pink one be?

That’s all I know for now. Naruto hasn’t updated his account with anything SS-related since the engagement was announced, which is really odd for him. (Maybe he’s still busy partying because his OTP is canon?) When he posts something, I’ll update this accordingly.

They didn’t outright say that it was Sasuke whom Sakura and Ino were crushing on, but it’s kind of general knowledge that Sasuke was quite popular with the KGE trainees not only because he was the younger brother of Akatsuki’s Uchiha Itachi but because he is good-looking and talented, so it’s not a stretch to assume Ino was talking about Sasuke and was teasing Sakura about it.

By the way, I love how Sasuke is known to be very private with his personal life and relationships but would, intentionally or not, obliquely reveal details like how they’ve been dating for 5 years already.

Anyway. Well, I can’t really say anything with certainty but if I were to extrapolate and make an *educated guess*, I’d say they probably started dating officially mid to late 2009. As far as I can recall, that’s also when dating gossips about them started popping up. Also the fact that they started wearing matching white gold bands late ‘09-early ‘10 (I’ll make a separate post about this later) just solidified to me that they really did start dating in 2009.

Prior to my projected time, their collaborations have been frequent, starting with Sakura helping to write a song for Kage, and then both of them being featured on each other’s solo projects. And even before that, it’s kind of general knowledge that they’ve been fairly close as trainees (not to mention, Sakura has allegedly been crushing on him before), so they already had that foundation. There’s that mutual respect for each other and each other’s talents that, over the course of their collaborations, probably grew into something more.

(2009-2010) White gold band

Sasuke is not that big on accessories. If we do see him fully accessorized, it’s because he is styled for promotional materials, and stage or music video looks. Otherwise, he doesn’t wear much accessories other than a standard watch, etc. That’s why it was so glaringly obvious when he started wearing a white gold band on his left pinky finger (note: pinky = pink = Sakura, lol!) in December 2009, which led fans to speculate if he is in a relationship. Everyone was suddenly on the lookout for a similar ring worn by idols and celebrities. Especially Sakura whom Sasuke was rumored to be dating that year.

Sakura accessorizes quite a bit but has never been seen wearing the said band. That is, until she had a fan meet in March of 2010. Sakura fansite First Love took HQ pictures of her in the event. In one of them, she leaned over while signing an autograph for a fan and consequently revealed the necklace she’s wearing inside her blouse, and behold, the white gold band hanging on it. It took quite a lot zooming in and adjusting the photograph which is why the legitimacy was contentious among fans, but you can see it for yourself here.

Sasuke posted a picture of a Hanasaki-style ceramic vase by Masho’s protégé ceramist, Kanyu, which was exhibited and auctioned at Leaf Gallery, and captioned it (now deleted) “Mine.”

(2013) Chambray shirt

Sakura was photographed at Konoha airport wearing a chambray shirt, which is similar to a shirt that Sasuke was wearing in the behind-the-scenes photo of his album back in 2009. The shirts have an identical tear at the left collar.

According to fashion fansite SakuraCloset, this shirt is from Sannin Men’s chambray shirt. This is how it originally looked on the runway. No tear.

Sasuke “ I-take-relationships-very-seriously” Uchiha marrying someone for shits? They can’t even make him forego his IG feed aesthetic to promote his group/members’ stuff, let alone force him to marry someone out of pity or publicity or whatever.

And Sakura. Why would she marry for publicity? She’s already famous and influential on her own, and not to mention, rich from all the songwriting royalties among other things. She doesn’t need clout. Least of all from Sasuke or the Uchiha. Like 90% of the hate directed towards her come from ugly Sasuke/Hoekage stans and weirdos who have conglomerate boners. She need not subject herself to all that.

They are also, by the way, at the height of their respective careers. If they cared all that much about their image, wouldn’t they wait until they’re in their early 30s to marry like most idols? They could potentially be throwing away endorsement deals from brands who prefer celebrities who are single to appease the fans who feel like they have some sort of ownership towards idols.

And yet! And yet despite everything, they chose to make their relationship public in their own terms.

(Also, note the timing of their announcement. It’s a few months after Hatake Kakashi became the new CEO. It’s like the management up until then has been the main reason that has kept them from coming out with their relationship, which is why the ‘secrecy’ of it felt kinda half-hearted and they’ve been [knowingly or not] dropping hints.)

Clearly, they just didn’t care and they couldn’t wait to spend the rest of their lives married to each other. It’s not that deep. You don’t have to like it. But if you love them as you claim, then respect their decision and stop spreading rumors like that.

Yesterday, the two were reportedly spotted at the Konoha offices to file for their marriage registration. On July 17, the two officially got married in a private ceremony.

The couple initially announced their engagement last March, with the wedding that was supposed to be held November 5 later this year.

Representatives say that the newlywed couple “opted for a small and private wedding along with their loved ones, in favor of donating the expenses that was supposed to be for their ceremony to the pediatric ward of Konoha General Hospital.”

Uchiha Sasuke is best known as a member and the primary lyricist of boy group Kage under KG Entertainment. Haruno Sakura is known as a member of girl group Kunoichi under the same company. Both have gone on to have successful solo careers.

Bottom line: how is it possible that the book where one half of OTP is dead is shippier than the first one where they’re both alive

Book 2 of the Newsflash trilogy picks up with our boy Shaun, who’s turned desk jockey since he lost George, riding to the rescue of some buddies beset by a zombie swarm. Everyone makes it out alive and Shaun tries to play it like it’s no biggie but the truth is,

I’ve lost one of the integral traits of a good Irwin: I’m not having fun. When I wind up in the field, it’s a chore to be survived, not an adventure to be relished. Without that little spark of gosh-golly-wow to drive me on, I’m essentially a dead person walking … George is the one who stopped breathing, but I’m the one who gave up on living.

Without George he has nothing to live for and so he’s sensibly withdrawn from fieldwork. The one thing that keeps him going is George’s voice in his head, chiding him for (among other things) picking up a coffee instead of a can of Coke. He’s started drinking Coke to appease her. He says it himself: “I am a haunted house pretending to be a man.” As for whether she’s real or just a figment of his imagination, this is Shaun’s take:

Screw sane. I don’t want anything that makes her stop talking to me.

Buckle up for an angst rollercoaster, kids:

One apartment for me and George, who didn’t take up any physical space but was so much a part of every room that sometimes I could fool myself into thinking she had just stepped out for some fresh air.

Several people have said it doesn’t really feel like anybody lives there, and what they don’t seem to understand is I like it that way. As long as I’m not really living there, I never have to think about the fact that I’m living there alone.

Outwardly he’s functional i guess but this is not the behavior of a person who has Moved On.

Sometimes I think this series is a how-to manual for small business owners masquerading as science fiction. For Shaun and George, the work used to be everything. Now George is gone Shaun is in the unenviable position of having to make all the tough calls, and second-guessing every last one because maybe George would have done it better. Oy vey. Offhand he informs us that their parents are also suing Shaun for ownership of her intellectual property. I always knew they were vultures but seriously???

So Shaun’s raison d’être right now is to bring down the person or people who murdered George. Obviously this does not mean the ones who pulled the trigger, it means the ones who gave the order & plotted to remove her. In the process of doing this he uncovers an even bigger conspiracy—although maybe it’s merely the same conspiracy from Book 1, only expanded in scope. I’m not sure. What I’m mainly interested in is how bad absolutely clueless Shaun is at signaling or perceiving romantic interest. Like, there’s a co-worker/employee of his, and they’re thrown together rather a lot, and she’s clearly crushing on him hard only Shaun’s too dense to see it. After the whole affair ends disastrously (he sleeps with the poor girl then calls her by George’s name) he ruminates:

”Why would I know what the signs were? I never had to read them before.”

It’s obvious why Shaun, a not-unattractive grown ass man whose other social skills appear to fall well within the range of “normal,” has such atrophied skills when it comes to this one thing. He’s never had to use them. Here’s Maggie the relationship guru:

”Have you ever had a girlfriend?” “Not as such, no.” ”Have you ever been in love?” There’s never been a good answer to that question. I didn’t even try. I just shrugged.

I can’t find the tweet anymore but Seanan Maguire has confirmed that Shaun and George first got together the night after junior prom—they went with other people as a sort of experiment. (@JKRowling see, this is the sort of authorial headcanon that the fans actually clamor for.) The two of them just skipped right over the tentative fumbling awkward initial stages of dating, of getting to know each other, because they already know each other inside out. Shaun says:

Sometimes I’m even arrogant enough to think the Rising happened so we could be together.

Colloquially we use the term two people “being together” to mean they enter into an exclusive romantic relationship. But it’s intentionally ambiguous here whether he means that, or just the two of them finding each other, because what would have been the chances of their being raised together absent a global catastrophe like a zombie apocalypse. Shaun finds it impossible to separate the romantic aspect of their relationship from the familial bond, and that’s why I love incest thanks for coming to my ted talk. Oh, here’s Mahir the relationship guru:

”I mean, I didn’t know…” “What, that I loved your sister? Of course you didn’t, just like you had no idea Rebecca fancied you. You never had to go searching like the rest of us.”

Can I just say, on an unrelated note, I feel SO BAD for Mahir’s wife who’s not even a proper character? She doesn't get any screentime. But this is a small business how-to manual, remember, and the way Shaun is always ringing Mahir at 2 in the morning and Mahir feels obligated to pick up because it’s his boss? Mahir’s wife is a saint, canonize her immediately. Back to my earlier point about how Shaun has less experience with flirting/dating than your average fourteen-year-old:

This sort of thing was easier to handle when George was around. She was always the one who noticed when girls started crushing on me, and she made them go away. One way or another. I’ve never tried to deal with this sort of situation on my own before.

What’s fascinating is that it’s not just romantic entanglements that he’s at a loss to deal with:

I’d never driven any real distance with a passenger—not unless you counted George, who didn’t actually change the way the bike was balanced, or make it necessary for me to compensate for additional weight.

WHEN GEORGE RODE PILLION ON HIS MOTORCYCLE IT DIDN’T EVEN THROW OFF HIS BALANCE!!! He’s not used to having to think about compensating for a passenger’s weight bc with George everything came naturally!!! If this isn’t a metaphor for their entire relationship idk what the hell it is.

She didn’t like touching people, so I touched them for her. She didn’t like emotional displays, so I took up the slack.

She was the yin to his yang, they were a team etc etc. Here is how Shaun reacts when the book’s antagonist gives his Evil Villain Spiel:

”I never gave you much credit for brains, Shaun—that was your sister’s department, God rest her soul, and if she made any errors in judgment, it was in trusting you to watch her back—but I still thought you were smarter than this.” “You take that back,” I whispered.

Shaun couldn’t care less that this fool gives him zero credit in the brains department, but let him impugn George’s judgment even slightly and our boy is ready to throw hands. We stan.

These are my two favorite passages from the book:

George and I shared a lot of rooms exactly like this one, one of us dozing while the other kept working, the staccato click of keys providing the white noise that meant it was safe to sleep.

It’s a work partnership! It’s a sibling bond! It’s a romantic pairing! It’s us-against-the-world, it’s everything! Also this:

George and I used to have shower races. Who could get in and clean and out again in the shortest amount of time. All the guys we went to school with insisted that their girlfriends and sisters took forever in the bathroom, but George always beat me … once a month or so, she’d take over the bathroom for an afternoon to dye her hair back to its original color, which inevitably resulted in her shouting for me to come in and help her dye her roots. The sink on our old bathroom was stained a permanent brown by the time we were sixteen, and we ruined so many towels.

Lol the implied contrast between “other guys who complained about their gfs/sisters” and Shaun who’s been President of the Georgia Mason Fan Club for over two decades.

ANYWAY the twist at the end of this novel is that George is alive. She’s being held at some scary, sterile government facility, and it’s clear from a minor early plot point involving clones that this isn’t George, it’s got to be a George-clone. Because George 1.0 died in Shaun’s arms. But George 2.0 has got all George’s memories so we’re going to go ahead and treat her just like George, which sets us up nicely for alternating Shaun-and-George POVs when we return for the final installment of the “Newsflesh” trilogy.
