Again, you’re literally doing to this show what people did to LOK. Not really anything different. You must not have been there when it was first starting, but I was, and this is exactly how people acted.

Let's talk about the rumors about the new Avatar Series

If you didn't read the rumors here they are:

1. The Next Avatar will be a woman, apparently she will be an amputee, with one prosthetic leg and a cat (or something like) as an animal guide. And she will also be homeless.

2. The 4 nations will no longer exist. Some catastrophic event will happen and will force Korra to not only fight against it but also to reshape the world. Making it 7 nations or havens(this can be the subtitle of the show according to the rumor)

This will make Korra the most powerful Avatar of the lore, as she will have reshaped the world - like Kyoshi did on Kyoshi Island but on a global scale.

3. Korra will possibly die from this event. If not right away, some time after due injuries

4. The Avatar will have a twin. One will grow up under White Lotus tutelage, training and living a good life, while the other will be homeless. Eventually the twins reconnect with each other, starting to train together and even the one that is not the Avatar, still is super powerfull

They also may play with the idea of one of them being the light while the other is the darkness, or with the idea of Raava being split into the two of them

Now, what do I think:

Not them forgetting about Korra, her story and fandom for years. With the movie becoming urban legend by now - all because after the pandemic ppl started to rediscover Avatar and some started to hate Korra like it was 2012-2014 again, and they apparently listen to the haters way more than the fans. Only for now they came and make her be responsible for such a big change in the Avatar Universe...this will only make ppl hate her more. And they will call her Mary Sue until the end of the days.

Not only that, bringing this district stuff to Avatar Universe will basically transform Avatar into another generic dystopic fiction.

And if it was just to pick ideas from both Kyoshi and Roku novels, why dafuk not simply adapt them???? WHY? I know why, it has to do with ego. I could bet money on it, that the new show isn't about the books just because someone else wrote them.

yapping about my drs ❕❕

okay so this was a request from one of my moots to do this so yeah!!

i have no clue where to start but i’ll talk about some of my desired realities that i shift to but probably mainly non group shift ones so personal ones 🫦

INFLUENCER

- this is one of my most recent drs i’ve been scripting and not gonna lie the main reason i’m shifting here is because of my man 🤭 he cosplays gojo... so you probably know as to why but besides the point, i was raised a nepo baby and younger sister to meghan thee stallion. i am a content creator, influencer (duh), fashion designer and i live with my s/o in the upper east side of new york🗽. i scripted that my first shift will be during christmas eve because who wouldn't wanna experience the city that never sleeps during the festive season and with your partner 😩 it’s gonna be the dream. i have a mad crazy friend group but i love them all because we’re so hot, cool and sexy. i did script that megan’s parents are still alive in my dr so let’s not worry about that. 💀 i dreamt about this dr a couple of times actually and about my s/o 😍, a couple of my friends. really looking forward to this dr.

OUTER BANKS

- i think i shifted here like twice or a couple of times but didn't realise it because i did mention to y’all about chilling with kiara and sarah, another time i did find myself surfing like literally just living the life through the waves and my ass thought it was a dream. looking back i doubt it was, in many instances to be honest. in this dr i am the sister to kiara and my s/o is pope 😌 i grew up a kook but i transitioned to a pogue when i joined the others. i’m the reason behind kiara and sarah making up and i’m close with rafe since kiara and sarah were best friends and probably would have sleepovers together. i scripted that cleo’s lesbian lmao 😭 you know why. i wiped the plot out a little and also made everyone graduate already so that school is out of the way when hunting for the gold.

AVATAR: THE LAST AIRBENDER

yep, i have an atla dr yay! in this dr i’m the oldest sister to kiara and sokka. i’m a waterbending master and my s/o’s zuko??? enemies to lovers kinda vibe. definitely part of the gaang and i’m shifting here because atla is part of my childhood. i have the ability to also create ice and other powerful combat skills so i can't wait to experience this universe.

LEGENDS OF KORRA

i also have a lok dr because why not, i’m the little sister to korra the avatar but i’m gonna prove to everyone that i’m also capable to make a difference and i scripted that i can blood bend.. so ain't no one gonna touch me as well still being able to water bend. my s/o is bolin because he’s so underrated for real.

THE ORIGINALS

in this dr, i’m a hybrid so vampire and werewolf and an adopted mikealson. i live in new orleans and my parents are rebekah and marcel even though their not my bio parental figures because they are already dead 💀. also hopefully i can survive when dahlia comes in because i scripted that my first shift will be during season 2 😓 well shit wish me luck y’all. at least i’ll get to see baby hope aw.

FAME

i have a fame dr because i love attention 🥰 my main profession is being an actor and i’m known for my role in the vampire diaries. i also play robin in the one piece live action and act in many more projects, a nepo baby in this dr too because almost all my family members are well-known. my s/o is caleb mclaughlin? he plays lucas in stranger things and our characters in the show dated so that’s how our relationship sparked.

TWILIGHT

i love talking about drs so yeah i have a twilight dr where when i first shift, i’ll be human but i get turned by a villain in order to send the cullens (my friends) a warning like it’s “game on” so i’m gonna have to mentally prepare myself because i’m gonna basically die 😭 lmao. my s/o is jacob because i’m team jacob simple and it’s a slow burn 😀 woop woop.

victorious - grew up watching it and i’m andre’s sister.

soloist - i’m a k-pop soloist in this dr and my s/o is blackpink jisoo (yes I’m wlw) she’s so 😍😍😍.

singles inferno - this is a dating reality tv show but at the end of it i end up with wonho (ex. monsta x) i’m besties with song jia.

one piece (anime) - so far my most enjoyable one is the one piece (anime) shared dr because we talk almost everyday. anywho my s/o is sanji ahhh my vinsmoke baby! i’m the little sister to the asl brothers and my devil fruit is similar to aokoiji so ice ect. i am part of the straw hats and joined them during the alabasta arc.

kard - the k-pop co-ed group basically, me and the person barely talk so you see why i prefer my personals drs.. yeah. my s/o is enhypen’s jay 😍 and my positions are sub-rapper, sub-vocalist, producer and maknae. i’m always a maknae in k-pop group drs for some reason 😭.

the legacies - person dipped on me and didn't even fill any of their sections so! i’m poly with hope and josie, i’m a werewolf and witch.

harry potter - i’m the head girl of slytherin and my s/o’s draco, i scripted fred’s death out. also shifting to the half-blood prince era.

teen wolf - i’m a tribrid in this dr so i’m gonna be unstoppable!

the vampire diaries - a bennett witch, cousin to bonnie.

one piece (live action) - i’m a phoenix hybrid in this dr and also part of the straw hats, grew up around shanks.

private romantic - umm this dr ticks me off low-key because the person that i’m group shifting with ghosts me 😝 i didn't script an s/o for a reason i’m just gonna ditch them for jonathan daviss 💀💀💀 like imagine fumbling manon (I'm shifting as manon from katseye in this dr) i don’t want that person as my s/o anymore and like we’re “friends” here, miss me with that shit.

my hero academia - the group shift is dead bro no one is fucking talking in the group chat, one of them quit shifting, the other i was pfp matching with changed their damn pfp without telling me. script ain't finished too, they all called it a day. and y'all wonder why i don't wanna join no group shift no more.

this was lengthy but y’all asked to yap about my drs other than jujutsu kaisen which you already know about that dr and spill some tea so i did exactly that, i hope you enjoyed and this better not flop, i spent hours typing this 🥳.

ok this is the rest of my big long thoughts about TLOK, and i’ll never do something like this for ATLA bc that show is perfect and i’ve never had notes though any rewatch.

anyways, i understand why LOK is structured the way it is, due to the back and forth nickelodeon gave the writers on the show being renewed etc etc. It’s clear they didn’t have a beautiful planned out 4 season arc to give korra as they did with aang, and you can’t make the bad guy of the season *that* powerful and unbeatable if you aren’t sure if the show is going to continue or not, but i got a little drunk the other night and thought of a way the show might have flowed better, with the content we’re given, without changing too many major plot points.

i like amon as a S1 villain. i think they could have made him not so obviously evil right off the bat. it would be interesting if he had worked with government to take away the bending of some of the more difficult prisoners in the nations. like the members of the red lotus that have to be put in those completely remote super prisons that take so much manpower to hold down. maybe they get their bending taken away at the beginning of S1 as a public act by amon to get support, but the red lotus isn’t mentioned much besides that, the seed for the next season has just been planted. amon is still defeated at the end as he should be, (i love him and tarrlok and their tragic daddy issues story) and then we move on to season two, now Zaheer/the red lotus season.

the hardest part of rearranging these seasons was trying to get Zaheer out of prison without him gaining airbending, but he’s clearly powerful without it, he can fight just as well out of prison sans bending. however, if his friends all lose their bending to amon, Zaheer would likely hear about it eventually. the guards, throughout ATLA and LOK, are notorious gossips. I believe that would motivate him to meditate deeper to try and connect to his buddies through the spirit world, like how Jinora can astral project around. maybe Ming Hua knew amon while he was still Noatak, or at least knew of him as a fellow super powerful water bender, and knew how skilled he was at water bending and could tell his “ability to take bending away” was a phony chi blocking trick all along, but needed zaheer’s guidance to unblock her chi and regain her bending. and now that she’s in a lower security prison, where everyone thinks she’s a non-bender, the guards are a bit more lax on allowing water near her. Ming Hua could break everyone out as zaheer did, and then the events of S3 (the new S2) play out.

i think unalaq’s season is good, sue me, plus his motivation to equalize the world with the spirits would be a good motivator/way for him to continue his bff zaheer’s work after he’s defeated. Zaheer started the work by defeating the earth queen, now unalaq will finish it by bringing true balance to the world. look at the earth kingdom now, it’s already beginning!

i really like the time skip at the end of S3, so maybe instead of being poisoned by zaheer, Korra still loses her connection to the past avatars and is simply desperate to try and reconnect. spending three years meditating and going to the spirit world, and visiting avatar temples all over the world. especially after learning about what a threat Kuvira is becoming, it’d become more pressing to at least connect with aang again. taking over the whole earth kingdom? sounds a lot like what firelord ozai was trying to do to the whole world, sure wish we could talk to the guy who defeated him about all this. plus, bumi gaining the ability to airbend? aang would be thrilled to know! Korra could still be led to the swamp to meet toph, still get some grumpy old lady advice to make her feel better, have a spiritual swamp vision of sokka perhaps, to get advice on how to take down Kuvira since he HELPED a LOT defeating Ozai, thank you.

it would also be more impactful if all the spirit world creatures and vines were just freshly brought to the world when kuvira decided to use spirit vines as a weapon that has completely unknown consequences. the newness would take the fact that the spiritual power was more dangerous than kuvira could even imagine, and really give it a punch.

Hi Anon thank you for the ask, and your patience! Very interesting thought, and I’m going to try my best to answer below!

I’m not sure I have the answers as to why she’d start harming herself (perhaps again) once she’s older, but she did go through a lot for the past few years during LOK. I don’t think it would be unreasonable to think that she had some things to work through, but instead of seeking help from friends or professionals, she turned to what she did in the past.

I can see the Krew noticing a change in her behavior, they probably ask questions but she’s not forthcoming with responding and whatnot.

It probably takes them a while to realize what she’s doing, but immediately after they find out, they try to help her in whatever way they can.

The Krew are sad when they think back on the signs of self-harm and they wish they had done something to help her sooner.

I feel like the Suyin would be very upset to hear this. She just got her sister back and talking with her, and she finds out that she’s been keeping things from her in the process. There’s still a lot of trust that they’re trying to build between one another (if we’re following the canon story), and so perhaps once Lin stops harming herself, Lin and Su take the time to talk.

Tenzin would be distraught as well. He cares deeply for Lin, but he knows that he’s not someone that she goes to for help anymore. I can see it being especially hard on him if he helped her through self-harming issues when she was younger. To not be there for her now pains him greatly.

I don’t think Toph or Katara would catch wind of this information. But I’m sure they’d both be upset to hear about this. As to what they’d do, I think Katara would put on her motherly voice and talk with Lin as much as she could about this. I’m not sure what Toph would do. I think she’d probably be heartbroken, but she wouldn’t know what to say exactly that would make Lin understand how sad she is about this. She’s also probably filled with guilt, because their strained relationship is probably partly to blame for Lin doing this, but also the reason why she probably went to Toph last about everything.

Perhaps Toph doesn’t say much, but during a visit, she gets teary-eyed and her voice wavers and she grabs Lin’s hand and says, “I’m sorry, baby girl. You—I let you down. I’m sorry.”

i think in the case of avatar legacy (which i haven’t actually read lol i’ve only looked at a few pages - including the suki one) they were trying to focus on aang and tenzin rather than filling in the gaps between atla and lok. which SUCKS bc all they had to do was add one more sentence with info about suki and sokka’s adult lives and everything would’ve been so perfect.

but oh well. i’m hoping the adult gaang movie fills in some more gaps. i’m hoping we get a better look at that movie as well some time soon so we can ACTUALLY SEE SUKI.

Korrasami Secret Santa 2022

Hi, Korrasami fam. We are back :)

We’re doing Korrasami Secret Santa for 2022!  (Yeah, I just copied and pasted this from Korrasami Secret Santa 2021 xD). 5 years in a row, let’s go. ;D

The rules are the same:

Korrasami creators will be able to gift one another with Secret Santa gifts. Whether it be fics, art, videos, animations…the fun’s all there! (It doesn’t have to be holiday-themed! It can be whatever you want :)

The Process:

This Secret Santa exchange will be done through drawnames.com, which is a Secret Santa Name Generator. You’ll need your email for this, and you can message me it directly on Tumblr (I’ll gather everyone’s names up, and put them into the generator when it’s time to draw names.)

The due date to sign up is 11:59 PM Dec 5, 2022 PDT (I’d like everyone to have ample time to do their Secret Santa gifts). :)

Most likely, you’ll need to make an account on drawnames.com (you don’t need to, but it’s recommended.  When you get to writing your Wish List on there, under ‘Hobbies and Interests’, make two different lists: One for ‘Fic Requests’, the other for ‘Art Requests’. If a writer draws your name, you’ll have a suggestion for what you want them to write. If an artist draws your name, they’ll have an idea of what to create! Korra and her Brutalization: A Legend of Korra Meta

In honor of International Womens’ Day, I want to talk a little bit about Legend of Korra and the treatment of Korra (and to a small extent other women) throughout the show. Content warning: there's some disturbing scenes that I show here, but if you've watched all of LoK, you should be fine.

Korra starts off confident; she is a young avatar who is eager to learn and feels suffocated from the isolation she is kept in from a very young age. But that doesn’t stop her, and like the headstrong girl she is, she moves to Republic City to make a difference and step into her role as the avatar.

Korra immediately starts to doubt herself; she becomes unsure of her abilities and frustrated with herself, and through that she learns to become emotionally vulnerable with Tenzin. To me, this was really great. It showed that you can be confident and vulnerable, and that the two aren’t necessarily independent of each other.

(I’m going to be honest, the 2nd season I didn’t really remember much of, so I’m just going to skip over that. Because what I really want to talk about is season 3.)

In season three, Korra faces the Red Lotus, an “anarchist” group that essentially wants to kill her. And they get pretty close. First, I want to talk about how Tenzin is beaten by the Red Lotus. This has been brought up in Lily Orchard’s (in?)famous LOK video, and while I disagree with her on many many topics of the show, I really think she has a point here. When Tenzin is being brutalized by the Red Lotus, the camera pans away. It is SO painful to see him like this, and the directors know it. It’s TOO painful to see it, so they don’t show you it, and the episode ends before we can see him be defeated.

Contrast that with Korra. They show you every detail of this. And I mean every detail.

It’s disgusting, and they refuse to treat her with any sort of decency or respect like they do Tenzin. It’s almost like they want us to enjoy her torturing. It’s genuinely gross.

People will often refute this by saying “LoK is just a darker show! Look at what they did to the Earth Queen!” And while yes, it is marketed towards an older audience, there’s still no point in brutalizing Korra this way. The main difference between Korra and the Earth Queen is that… well, Korra’s the protagonist. We’re supposed to be rooting for her, and while the Earth Queen being suffocated was definitely dark, it wasn’t unprecedented. The audience was never supposed to like the Earth Queen—she exploited and kidnapped her own people, so of course we wouldn’t care THAT much if she died. But we’ve been with Korra since the beginning. We’re supposed to want her to be happy, and why on earth would we want her to be tortured brutally in such a disgusting way that gives her absolutely no dignity? If we want her to succeed?

(here Zaheer uses the same technique used on the Earth Queen to suffocate here on Korra. for some reason)

In Season 4, the main focus is on Korra and her healing from the brutal things the Red Lotus did to her. She is clearly still struggling, and it could have been another great way to show how being physically strong and confident doesn’t mean you can’t be vulnerable. But they make a lot of bad choices in this season.

One of my main gripes is that in order to heal, she has to return to her abuser, Zaheer, and HE has to teach her how to feel better.

I don’t want to compare LoK to ATLA, although it’s very important to mention that a show that’s a direct sequel, uses its old characters, and banks off of references, should be able to be compared to its predecessor. But I think it’s important to compare Korra’s arc here to Zuko. This doesn’t come out of nowhere; Korra has a lot of similarities to Zuko. The chopping of her hair is a significant turning point in her arc, and there’s an episode called “Korra Alone” (which is clearly a direct callback; shown below).

The difference between Zuko and Katara is that, a. Zuko never had to accept his abuser, and b. Zuko started off as a villain.

One of Zuko’s major points is when he confronts his father—his abuser. He does not bow to him and give in, saying that maybe he had a few good points or his heart was in the right place, but he directly says that Ozai was wrong for what he did. This isn’t the case with Korra. For some reason, Korra has to learn to trust her abuser. The person who did this to her:

And she has to hear him out.

This leads me to my second point, and what’s basically the complaint I have; despite being a protagonist, the show treats Korra like a villain. It frames her torture scenes as if we’re supposed to be excited that she’s being brutalized, as if we’re supposed to think she deserves it. And it’s not even handled properly as one of the villains we know so well—Zuko, who was able to overcome his abuse and become a protagonist who we root for. Again, Zuko and Korra aren’t directly the same characters, but there are parallels between the two and the show encourages their comparison. When it comes to Korra, however, we’re supposed to believe that she deserves everything that comes to her; the brutal scenes and the lack of dignity, even if she is a protagonist.

And in the end, that’s what we’re meant to believe; that Korra deserved what happened to her. In the finale, Korra says, “I finally understand why I had to go through all that. I needed to understand what true suffering was, so I could become more compassionate to others.”

This is, to put it short, ridiculous. I hate this so much I can’t even begin to say how much I hate it. No, Korra did not have to go through the torture she went through. She did not have to go through the mercury poisoning. She did not have to go through every hardship she did. This “what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger” is so harmful because Korra’s healing revolved around accepting her abuser and thanking him for the awful things he did to her. Korra wasn’t even that cocky by the end of the first season, so what it’s essentially indirectly teaching girls is that if you’re confident, you’ll pay. It’s disgusting.

Zuko got a banishment to the Earth Kingdom, got to have his ideas and practices challenged, but he never got physically tortured. I truly, truly believe that one of the main reasons why Korra is quite literally villainized by the show is because she was a confident, brown teenage girl. None of the male characters are treated with such disrespect and we never get told that they need to be “humbled” by abuse.

This is not completely resolved to LoK; there are some aspects in ATLA that I think could’ve been fixed had there been more women in the room. I tag her a lot (bc her metas are awesome), but I really recommend you read @araeph 's Katara: Consumed by Destiny series. I also have a meta here about how Katara is treated in ATLA, specifically in “The Fortuneteller.” (I want to emphasize that while I am anti-Kataang, I don’t believe that Katara’s treatment had to do with the ship itself or that kataang is inherently anti-Katara. It’s just a note about how her character is treated in this episode and beyond.)

I’ve heard a lot of people say that they’re ‘glad’ that LoK didn’t feature Suki or Mai or Ty Lee, because they can’t imagine how poorly they’d be represented. And honestly, I can’t blame them.

This isn’t to say that we need to stop watching LOK or even ATLA. I think the internet has this weird problem where we’ve been told that the way to get rid of problematic media is to just stop consuming anything even remotely problematic altogether. But certain aspects of media will always be relatively problematic, since as content creators we sometimes input our biases into the things we create. The solution, then, is not to banish anyone who puts any harmful stereotypes into their content from society, but to actively and healthily criticize it. Bryke are not God, but they’re also not demons put on the earth to suppress woc. They’re white guys that have implicit biases that have worked their way into the content they produce. I think the lesson learned here, is to have women, especially BIWOC, in writing rooms, to prevent atrocious acts from happening to future Korra's.

Summary: After undergoing terrigenisis unwillingly your life is turned upside down when you are deemed too dangerous to return to life as a civilian. You are put with the Avengers team to train and rebuild. As you hone your powers and skills, you must also decide if you can find home and love again. Or is your curse to be a lonely wanderer forever?

You lounged on the lawn furniture in the back of the compound watching Dizzy run in joyful circles as Redtail made loops overhead. You had brought a tennis ball out and Dizzy was adorable as she ran around with it in her mouth. Occasionally, she’d drop it in your laugh and you’d throw it out into the expanse of lawn. You laughed as she leapt into action each time the ball was thrown. Redtail would swoop down every now and then to tease the dog. 

The rest of the team was out on missions or meetings. Sam, Steve, and Bucky had been sent on a mission yesterday afternoon and you were enjoying some down time. It felt like it had been some time since it had happened. You stretched lazily, basking in the feel of the sun on your skin and the feeling of contentment. 

You hear footsteps approaching and turn to see Loki walking towards you. He had been in a meeting with Thor, Tony, and Maria Hill when you had checked earlier. 

“Hi. How’d the meeting go?” You greet the god. 

“It went well. Nothing of grave importance,” Loki takes the chair next to you, “What are you up to?”

“Relaxing in this glorious weather,” you see his eyes take in your tank top, jean shorts, and sandals. “You know, I’ve never seen you in anything except the leather. Is there casual wear on Asgard?”

“Simple tunics and robes but, as prince and warrior, I do not wear them often.” Loki raises an eyebrow at you. 

“I see. What about for Tony’s party this weekend? Will you wear this?” you motion to his attire.

“I plan to wear a suit.” Loki chuckles. 

“I look forward to seeing that. Isn’t the leather hot though? It’s 80 today.” 

“I could strip for you if you’d like.” Loki smirks playfully. 

“That’s okay,” you hold your hands up in defeat. 

“Is this better?” Loki’s form shimmers for a moment before revealing him in bermuda shorts and hawaiin shirt. 

You grin, “I like it! You look ready for a beach vacation.” You stare at Loki for a moment, wondering about his personal life. He knew a lot about you but rarely revealed much about himself. “Can I ask you something?”

“Of course, darling. Anything.”

“Do you have… someone? Here or on Asgard or… somewhere?” you stammer through the question. 

“Your two lovers are not enough for you?” Loki chuckles. 

“They’re plenty for me. You don’t talk about yourself much, Lok. I mean, you don’t have to tell me anything you don’t want to but I’m curious about you. We’re friends and so I wonder, is there someone? Are you a player? Are you a monk? You know my story. You haven’t given me much of yours. Have you ever been in love?”

Loki studies you for a moment and then nods as if deciding something to himself, “I suppose I would be what you Midgardians refer to as a player.”

“Love ‘em and leave ‘em?” you giggle. 

“I suppose. There’s only ever been one person who…” Loki trails off. 

“Who what?” 

“Who I thought I could fall for.”

“What happened?” You question. 

“She belongs to another.” Loki says as he looks away. 

“She belongs only to herself.” You counter. 

“Of course. She’s engaged to another.” 

“I’m sorry.” You tell him. 

“Thank you.” Loki pauses to contemplate before asking, “Are you happy? You’ve been through a lot in your short life.”

You smile at the statement, “I’m not that young, Loki.”

“I’m over 1000 years old.” Loki deadpans. 

“True,” you laugh, amazed at the lifespan of Asgardians, “Yes. I am happy. This isn’t what I imagined my life to be. Terrigenisis tore my world apart but you make the best of what you have. I have a family in the team, lovers in Steve and Bucky, friends, a purpose. This is… home.”

“And I’m your friend?” Loki asks. 

“Of course you are.”

“Aren’t you afraid I’ll betray you at some point? I mean, I am notorious.” 

“I trust you, Loki. I think I know your heart, but understand that I live by the statement, ‘Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.’ I may let someone make a fool of me once but I won’t let them a second time. Once you lose my trust, it’s gone and would take a great deal to earn it back,” you explain. 

“I’ll keep that in mind.”

“I have to trust you. I’m letting you play with my brain.”

“Thank you.”

“For what?”

“Giving me a chance. Trusting me. Seeing me as something other than the villain that I was.”

“You’re more than your past. Oh!” you exclaim when a slobber covered ball is dropped in your lap. “Hi Dizz.” you laugh and throw the ball for her. 

“She has you well trained.” Loki smirks. 

“That she does. Speaking of training, are you up for another session?” you ask. 

“Same time as always, darling. I’ll see you then.” Loki gets up. 

“See ya later, friend,” you watch as Loki walks back to the building, dropping the glamour to reveal his normal outfit as he walks. He sends you a brief wave before walking into the building. Your attention is pulled away when Dizzy drops the ball in your lap again. Time to play.

You get to the training room early to do some climbing and ended up in the rafters as you were known to do. You were just about to climb down when Loki entered with Thor trailing behind him. 

“Drop it, brother,” Loki grouses at him. 

“Just tell me you aren’t playing at anything with her and I will,” Thor demands. 

“Mortals are your weakness,” Loki rolls his eyes at his brother. 

“Love is not weakness, Loki.”

“I do not feel that way about her. She is a friend. Much like Sif is to you.” Loki says pointedly.

“That’s all I wanted, brother,” Thor smiles. 

You clear your throat loudly, “Good afternoon, gentlemen.”

Loki looks up at you in amusement, “How long have you been there?”

“Well before you came in,” you wink at him. 

Thor looks at you sheepishly, “I’ll let you two get to your training.”

“Okay. See ya later,” you are holding in your giggle as you make your way to the climbing rope and jump to it. When you slide to the floor, you look into Loki’s mischievous eyes and you both burst into laughter. When it’s spent you say dramatically, “Loki! I can no longer control myself. I must swoon into your arms!” You pretend to faint against him and he catches you. 

“You’re ridiculous.” Loki narrows his eyes at you. 

“Yup! And you, my friend, are stuck with me!” You stand back up.

“You know that won’t be the last time someone will make the insinuation.” Loki says quietly.

“People have a hard time believing a man and woman can be just friends,” you shrug.

“That is true. Can I ask you something?” Loki asks. 

“Of course.”

“Hypothetically, would you have been able to fall in love with me if…” Loki trails off. 

“I don’t think I would let myself fall in love with any Asgardian,” you admit.

“Why?”

“How old are you, Loki?” 

“A little over a thousand years.”

“Exactly. Asgardians live for around 5,000 years, right?”

“Yes.”

“That’s why. Humans live maybe 80 years. That’s a blink in comparison. I’ve lost a lot of people who are important to me in my life. I don’t think I could purposely put someone through that. Falling for an Asgardian, letting them fall for you, would mean making them watch you die while they live on for millenia. I don’t think I could do that to someone, ever. It’s difficult enough being friends and knowing that. Being lovers, it would be unbearable.”

Loki nods, “I couldn’t have said it better myself.” 

You smile at him, glad he understands. “How about we get to work?”

“Let’s go, darling.”

Over the past week, you had worked up to slipping into Loki’s mind without the unbearable pain. It still caused a headache but you were able to see through his eyes and communicate in a similar fashion to how you did with animals. Today, you were attempting to take control of Loki’s movement. It wasn’t easy. Just lifting his hand took a toll. You drop the warg after a moment. 

“What’s wrong?” Loki looks concerned. 

“It’s difficult. The pain is worse,” you explain.

“Why don’t you warg and I’ll do some magic? Just play around a bit.” 

“Okay. Sounds fun,” you warg back into Loki. He begins doing some simple tricks and you watch in delight. You try to concentrate on the motions he makes, the feel of the magic flowing through him, and his thought process as he works. A picture flashes in Loki’s mind and you catch a glimpse of a beautiful face before he forces it away. 

“Does she know?” You ask in his head.

“What?” Loki hedges. 

“Does she know?” you drop the warg.

“No.” Loki says. 

“Then she’s not.”

“Not what?”

“She’s not lost to you. How do you know she doesn’t feel the same way?” you push. 

“She… I… I don’t… She couldn’t-”

“Oh, I’m gonna stop you right there. She could. She really could, but if you never told her how you feel, what’s she supposed to do?”

“She’s engaged.” Loki insists.

“She’s not married, Loki. You should tell her. Wouldn’t it be better to know?”

“What?”

“At least then you’d know. Either she doesn’t and you have closure to move on. Or she does and you two can figure it out. ‘Better to have loved and lost than to never have loved at all’, right? Better to say it and know than to spend the next few millennia wondering,” you needle. 

“I…” Loki falters with a far away look in his eyes. 

“Just promise me you’ll think about it.” 

“I will.” Loki nods.

“Good,” you see Loki’s concentration is completely gone, “Why don’t we leave it for today?”

“Oh. Yes, good. I’ll see you later.” Loki walks away lost in thought. 

“Later, loverboy,” you whisper with a chuckle to yourself.

Some time ago I was extremely irritated, as I saw a post accusing Korrasami and Bubbline of being both as bad as destiel, for just establishing canon at the end. Using more recent cartoons and series as arguments. Seriously what's the matter with that person? Does this person know that before the rupphire kiss things were not so easy for people who wanted to put queer content in cartoons ? A 10-second joke on paranorman mentioning a boyfriend, gave a fucking controversy.

It bothers to me no end when people refuse to acknowledge that the progress we’ve made has been over such a short period of time. “2014 wasn’t that long ago.” Yes it was. When we’re talking about mainstream acceptance of queer people, it was. “It was 2014, not 1965.” Right, because in 1965 that episode would never have been allowed to air due to the Hays Code. It probably would have been too radical even in 2012, when supporting same-sex marriage was still sort of a bold statement.  

Like, listen, I understand that some people watched it after the fact expecting them to be in a relationship on the show and were disappointed, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t incredibly meaningful and incredibly important. Invalidating older media and by extension, everyone who found it meaningful, is the opposite of helpful. It’s natural that things that were progressive six years ago aren’t anymore. It means we’ve made progress. It’s a good thing. Also like, nothing was stopping those people from looking up when Korra and Asami actually got together before they watched the show.

Secondly, “main character doesn’t get together with their love interest until the series finale” is like... very much a major, long-running trope in kids’ TV. LoK and Adventure Time are not at all out of the ordinary in that regard.

Every breath you took coated your throat with a mixture of ash and dust. Every building you ran past was a game of chance, whether it would come crumbling down on top of you. Yours limbs were stiff and with every step they threatened to give out, but you would not let that happen. You couldn’t let that happen, not when you were tasked with finding those who were hurt and who needed help. Despite knowing how important it was to stay focused and alert, you couldn’t help the way your mind wandered to your friends and if they were okay. Specifically, if he was okay.

No. There would be no “if’s”. He would be okay; he had to be, because you had no idea what you would do if he wasn’t.

There were so many words that you had to say to him, and if- when- you made it out of this alive, you would find him and tell him what your heart had revealed to you a long time ago. You couldn’t count how many times you had been close to telling Wing exactly how you felt, but you had never gotten the chance. Between everything going on, Kuvira, the brief time where the world was encompassed in pure evil, the two of you hadn’t really had the time to interact as much as you wanted to. But somehow, the feelings that you harbored for him had only grown over the months. They had grown all the way up until this moment, when you were just about ready to pop and confess everything.

But all of that would have to wait until after the battle was over, whenever that would be. You knew it would have to be over soon, you had just stumbled across the sight of Korra racing after a disheveled Kuvira.

As you raced through the debris ridden streets, you kept your eyes peeled for both enemies and survivors. It proved to be quite difficult as there was a blanket of ash that covered any an everything it could reach. Only when you had lifted enough earth to make a small building and still hadn’t found anyone did you turn on your heel and begin making your way back to Tenzin and the kids.

Your feet caught on a few pieces of debris, but you made it back to them in one piece. You couldn’t say the same for Tenzin as you caught sight of him leaning exhaustedly against Jinora.

“Tenzin! Jinora!” Your voice rang out across the broken street as you approached them. Without hesitation, you quickly walked to Tenzin’s other side, taking some of his weight. Jinora threw an appreciative look from the other side of her father before continuing to walk and support her father.

“Y/N, you’re here! We’re glad you’re okay.” Meelo exclaimed from your other side, prompting a small, reassuring smile to be thrown his way. You could say the exact same for them; the sight of them in good shape, for better or worse in Tenzin’s case, made the smallest sliver of hope appear in your chest. Something that told you everything would be okay.

“I’m okay, Meelo. I’m glad you all are okay!” Your eyes trailed to Tenzin’s hunched figure beside you, “Tenzin…is it over?”

Before a word could be uttered, the ground beneath your feet began to rumble. Your teeth knocked against each other as if the ground was threatening to either swallow you all whole or laugh you into the sky. Jinora’s look of appreciativeness changed into one of unbelief and fear. Your eyes followed her faze over your shoulder where you were met with a sight that, undoubtedly, made your face mirror Jinora’s.

The sight of a tidal wave of pure spiritual energy consuming everything in it’s path was terrifying enough to both freeze you to your sport while making an inner voice yell at you to get out of the way. You didn’t have to choose between the two actions, for you were already being pulled towards an alley.

Despite being pulled by two people, your feet still couldn’t move fast enough to escape the incoming cloud of energy and dust.

You felt the heat of the energy licking at your neck and without a second thought, your arms shot forward, pushing Tenzin with all of your might into the alley. Your view of him and the kids were obscured as the cloud of dust enveloped your body, the pure energy setting every nerve in your body on fire.

Your arms shook with the effort of raising them against the intense winds that pushed against you. You were barely able to raise a slab of earth in front fo you as it all intensifies, however, it proved to be futile.

You couldn’t help the yell that escaped your mouth as the slab gave way against the winds, your body being effortlessly picked up and thrown backwards.  

The panic that you felt was like no other as you floated through the air, your eyes searching for something- anything- that wasn’t dust. However, the search was cut short as you slammed against something that effectively took all of your breath away and made your vision go dark.

The first thing you had expected when gaining an ounce of consciousness was to choke on a mouth full of dust. Well, to be honest, you were surprised that you had even gained an ounce of consciousness in the first place. You remember every detail that had happened and you knew that it hadn’t been good. You didn’t need your memories to know that much; the pain that radiated through your body said enough.

The first sense that came back was your hearing. You heard nothing at first, but then you heard what sounded like footsteps. They were muffled due to the sound of your own blood rushing in your ears, but you could hear them nonetheless. You had no idea how long it had been before voices accompanied those footsteps, but with every second that passed, your hearing threatened to go back out…and it scared you.

“Y/N! Say something, let us know where you are!”

You tried with everything that you had to reply, to call out to him, but your mouth felt as if it were filled with cotton.

The air around you was charged with electricity, giving off a heat that would have normally made you uncomfortable; but your limbs felt ice cold and like they were being weighed down by something relentless. You couldn’t move or say anything if you wanted to, and you wanted to; so badly.

“Y/N! Please say some-“

“She’s over here!”

Through your hearing that continued to fade in and out, you could hear the sound of footsteps quickly making their way over to you and the sound of debris being pushed over.

“Oh no. No, no, no. Y/N!”

You couldn’t see him, but you could hear him. You could hear a rathe large piece of debris being dropped somewhere and then you could feel him.

His thumbs gently rubbed at your eyes, removing the ash that blocked your vision…and then you could see him. The sight was enough to bring tears to your eyes, Wing unharmed and here, right before you.

“Hey! Can you hear me?”

With all the strength you could muster, you moved your mouth, hoping that sound was actually coming out.

You knew that you should have been worried at the look his face as he looked at the state you were in, but all you could feel was relief at the sight of his face. He was okay. Nevermind the tears that trekked down his face, cutting paths in the thin layer of dust that covered his features.

“You’re going to be okay. I’m going to get you help, I got you.”

The feeling of his hands picking you up was masked by the intense waves of pain that wracked your body. The only thing keeping you from crying out was the sound of his voice reassuring you as he ran quickly.

“You’re safe now, Y/N. You keep your eyes open for me, okay? You have to keep your eyes open for me, please. I need you- I love you. You can’t leave me.”

The sound of his voice cracking as he spoke made tears appear in your eyes. You never knew that you could hate a sound so much until you heard the sound of Wing crying. It made your chest swell with sobs.

You could feel your mouth moving once more and this time, you could feel both and hear your voice as it came out of your mouth. The sound of your voice made Wing stop and look down at you, his eyes wide and filled with tears.

“W-what’d you say?” He lowered his head closer to you as your mouth opened once more.

“I love you too…more than you know.”

A Definitive History of Bubbline

With “Obsidian” coming out in two days, it really is time for a definitive history of Marceline and Bubblegum’s relationship. And by that I mean the tumultuous road that led us to “Obsidian” from a production and fandom point of view. For a list of Bubbline episodes, check out my Bubbline Guide (and part two) - which I need to update, I know I know. For this post, I wanted to highlight how far this pairing has come and what Bubbline means to queer representation in children’s cartoons.

This is less of an analysis and more of an overview with links to more information on specific incidents to keep it (relatively) brief. I say it’s a definitive history but it isn’t an exhaustive one, so do check out the links included to learn more about how we got here. I realize not everyone cares about these kinds of things but I think it’s important to know how hard Adventure Time’s creators had to fight. Bubbline is a pioneer ship in many ways but it doesn’t always get the recognition it deserves.

Initial Concepts

As is the case with much of Adventure Time, the initial concept of who the characters of Bonnibel and Marceline were going to be is very different than what we ended up getting. @gunterfan1992 explores this and other production tidbits in depth in his book so I do recommend checking that out. The short version is that these two were created to be opposites and with a Betty and Veronica type dynamic in mind where they would both be love interest to the protagonist, Finn.

This didn’t quite end up being the case but remnants of this concept are seen in “Go With Me” (March, 2011), the episode with the first on-screen Bubbline interaction. As Marcy helps - and sabotages - Finn in asking Bonnie out, she also becomes a potential love interest for him but she shuts him down immediately. So while Finn’s crush on PB continues, the notion that Marceline would be part of a love triangle is dismissed. Instead, this first Bonnie and Marcy interaction established that the two already know each other and there’s some bitterness in that past.

“What Was Missing” and the Mathematical Controversy

A potential preexisting relationship between the two was further explored in “What Was Missing” (September 2011) just a season later. The episode was written and storyboarded by Rebecca Sugar and eventual showrunner Adam Muto. Sugar was responsible for much of the character depth added to Marceline and later even played, quite aptly, her mother in the Stakes miniseries. It was Sugar who wrote the now beyond iconic “I’m Just Your Problem” based on personal experiences and suggested that Marcy and Bonnie be queer characters with a complicated romantic past.

“What Was Missing” was hugely important in how it hinted at a complex relationship through character interactions, Marceline’s song, and the last scene twist with PB’s shirt. The AT crew were supportive of the idea and sneaked in plenty of queer subtext, but this is where I have to point out that 2011 was a very different time and it’s thanks, in part, to Bubbline that things have changed. Autostraddle’s article from back when covers what is now known as the Mathematical controversy. Audiences picked up on the subtext and Cartoon Network was not having it. The popularity of the ship soared but the execs were not taking to queer implications kindly.

Great Bubbline Drought

So, the ship has sailed but controversy looms over it. “What Was Missing” s subtle by today’s standards but it was enough to keep Marceline and Bubblegum apart for two years on-screen. Each character went through wonderful development in the meantime, as did the show itself, but there’s a certain sense of bitterness to what came to be known as the Great Bubbline Drought. CN got so afraid of the potential backlash that they waited two years to have a new episode featuring the pair, “Sky Witch” (July 2013), by which point Sugar had left AT to work on her own show, Steven Universe. I’m happy that Sugar got to create her own show and push for even more queer representation, but it’s also sad that she never got to write more for the ship she pioneered.

“Sky Witch” still happened, though, and featured even more subtext, from PB’s side this time around. The shirt returned and there was hope as Marcy and Bonnie were seen hanging out together more often (”Red Starved” and “Princess Day”). Another controversy threatened to emerge in August 2014 when Olivia Olson, Marceline’s voice actress said that creator Pendleton Ward had confirmed a pre-show Bubbline romance. It was a messy ordeal with deleted tweets and questions about whether the two could get together again in the series. Fortunately, though, things changed in the three years between 2011 to 2014 and another Bubbline drought didn’t follow.

The Season That Changed Everything

It took another two years after “Sky Witch” but the ball was finally, inevitably, relentlessly rolling. “Varmints” premiered in November 2015 and three episodes later, the Stakes miniseries kicked off. What season 7 meant wasn’t just breadcrumbs and (not so) subtle songs anymore: suddenly, there were too many Bubbline moments to count. “Varmints” served as a follow-up to “What Was Missing” and a final reconciliation, and though Stakes was primarily about Marcy, it also developed her relationship with Bonnie. Afterwards, it became clear that Bubbline was heading somewhere.

It’s worth noting that the cultural context also changed between when “Sky Witch” and “Varmints” aired. In December 2014, The Legend of Korra ended with Korra and Asami beginning their romantic relationship, and Rebecca Sugar was making Steven Universe more and more explicitly queer by the day. Adventure Time started the ball rolling but now it wasn’t alone as a popular Western cable cartoon with queer characters. However, Bubbline was still very much subtext at this point, just with significantly more hope of becoming more.

Late Series Entanglement

But at what point does subtext become plain text? Bubbline fans sure did have fun with that question between Stakes and the finale. Bonnie and Marcy became near inseparable, with most of their major appearances involving one another from this point on. These included the meet the adoptive dad date “Broke His Crown” (March 2016), the Elements miniseries (April 2017) and the nigh on obnoxiously on the nose “Marcy & Hunson” (December 2017). In fact, all but two of Marceline’s major appearances from season 7 on included Bonnie - the exceptions being “Everything Stays” as part of Stakes, and “Ketchup”, which really wasn’t any less gay.

Bubbline moments really did become too many to count, with the vast majority of them having romantic implications. And with queer representation becoming more and more prominent in Western animation, canon Bubbline romance seemed like a question of when rather than if. I’d like to point out here how this was often frustrating, though. After the very rocky start, this relationship was thriving and was really basically confirmed, but that last little push to make it undeniably a part of queer history was still needed.

“Come on!” - The End and Beyond

The almost three years that passed between Stakes and “Come Along With Me” (September 2018) were much more tolerable than the Drought; after all, there was plenty of Bubbline content in the later seasons. The big question as the finale came was whether Adventure Time would fizzle out on its early pioneer of a wlw ship or follow through, once and for all. Almost four years after LoK ended and just before season 1 of She-Ra and the Princesses of Power dropped, Marcy and Bonnie had an emotional moment, kissed on screen, and ended the series together.

The intricacies of why a kiss was needed as a signifier of romance is a discussion for another day. But wouldn’t it have been strange after almost a decade of build-up for them not to seal the deal with a kiss? And to think it almost didn’t happen, as by that point it was so obvious they were together. Again, I direct your attention towards Paul Thomas’s book, he explains how it was storyboard artist Hanna K. Nyström’s call to add this final detail. Because, come on! Sometimes, you need to be as clear as possible, and that’s the case with queer representation in animation.

Since the finale, the comics have been continuing the Bubbline train - which are not technically canon but one can have fun regardless. In any case, the existence of Marcy and Bonnie’s relationship, of their queer identities, is not something that can reasonably be denied. It was a long road, and, make no mistake, an arduous one, but this is the story of a win. A win for storytelling and a win for wlw relationships.

We’ll Build Our Own Forever

So, there you have it, a Bubbline timeline of sorts. In March of 2011 we had the first on-screen interaction and now, in November of 2020, we’re getting a 45-minute-long special with the two of them as the central characters. They’re canonically in love, with King Princess covers of Bubbline songs and more. I tried to contain myself, for once, and not write too much. I think it’s important that people have a general idea of just how monumental all of this is and how, even just 9 years ago, “Obsidian” would have been totally inconceivable.

Some of this might have come as a surprise to you. It’s certainly not been easy to get to where we are now with Bubbline and it’s yet to be seen how open “Obsidian” will be about the relationship. I’ve been talking about Bubbline for years and attempted to chronicle their relationship many times so I’m happy I’ve finally done it from this perspective as well.

Adventure Time: Distant Lands “Obsidian” is streaming on Nov 19 on HBO Max. If you can, stream it so we can show that there’s popular demand for stories like that of an angry vampire and a despotic piece of gum.

honestly it hurts my heart so much to see other fic writers validate wanting more reblogs/kudos/comments/what have you with something along the lines of “yes I do it for myself but I also appreciate validation” bc like. Idk man, writing is really, really, really hard. And we’re in the middle of a pandemic, a racial justice uprising, a climate crisis, a really stressful election in the US, etc etc. I don’t want to speak for anyone else, but for me personally, it can be really hard to muster up the energy to write, and the idea of someone else enjoying my fic is often the kick in the pants that gets me to actually write. It’s not like I’m waiting on myself to write the fic bc I already know what’s going to happen. I plotted it. I thought of the ideas. And the “thinking of ideas” part of writing is a lot easier than the “putting your fingers on the keys and actually writing it out” part of writing. I’m in college (on Zoom), I had two papers due this week, a bunch of extracurricular obligations, a social life, and oh yeah I still gotta eat and sleep and take my meds, and sometimes all I want to do after that is watch 90 Day Fiance and forget that sentences exist. And I *know* that’s not just me, that other fic writers are far more exhausted from global and individual situations than I could even imagine, so then it makes me upset when I see these posts by fic writers asking for like. a kudos here and there. a 5 word comment. and then people having the AUDACITY to make them argue their position???? I spend HOURS every week writing, researching, thinking about my fics, and when I know somebody out there likes them enough to leave a kudos or comment? it makes my whole day. but when that doesn’t happen, I really feel like I’m just shouting into the void. Content creators are such an important part of fandom and it would be nice to be able to ask for our work to be better appreciated without it turning into a debate about whether we just do it for attention or if we do it for Ourselves Like Real Artists or some bullshit like that. 

anyway. with that in mind, if you ever want to send me a fic, pls do! I love being exposed to other people’s writing and appreciating it like it deserves to be appreciated. atla/lok/spop/voltron, any ship barring like incest or weird age gaps is fine (but you know what I really love? gen. gen is where it’s at), sfw pls :) I do fic recs on this blog periodically and I’m gathering up my list for the next one, and I would love for it to be more diverse than the last one in terms of ships, more gen fics, more fics w under 100 kudos currently, representing more creators of color, things like that.

i don’t get when people say not to age up the atla characters if you’re only going to draw / write explicit stuff. like the CREATORS aged them up for us¿¿¿ they’re either dead or really old but the time of Lok and theres also art of the gaang in the art book of Lok that shows them grown up too.

Honestly, I don’t understand it either--because the simple fact is, if adults want to write about kids/teens having sex, they’re gonna write about kids/teens having sex. And it happens a lot! Sexuality and sexual exploration are frequently themes in coming of age narratives in mainstream, published media--all of them created by adults. Hell, in AtLA, Suki and Sokka are clearly interrupted before they were about to have sex (using a trope kids wouldn’t understand, but adults watching would absolutely know what the rose in Sokka’s mouth and that suggestive pose signifies), and Sokka is seen calling to Suki at the end of the scene to do exactly that. It’s also hinted that Mai and Zuko were sleeping together earlier in the book. Adults had to be thinking about teenagers having sex in order for these scenes to be created and put into the show!

And like, it’s not as if there isn’t smut on ao3 of the atla characters at their canon ages. I’ve even read some of it--the piece I read of book 2 Zutara was very well written, and I enjoyed it a lot. But I’m still not attracted to kids or teenagers. And I personally do not choose to write smut where they’re anything but adults, because I prefer to write about adults just in general (all of my content is either post-canon or AUs where the gaang are in their late teens/early twenties), but that’s my personal choice, and everyone else is welcome to make theirs!

So this whole argument that ‘aging up is bad’ rests on the idea that a) writing about teenagers having sex is bad, and b) that adults writing about adults having sex are doing it specifically to get around writing about teenagers and are, somehow, still thinking about teens having sex which???? we’ve already established that if they wanted to write about teens, they would be. There’s plenty of that on ao3 already, no one would really blink execpt the hardcore antis and they’re easy enough to silence if they start leaving nasty comments on someone’s work. Since A is entirely subjective and B is flat out inaccurate, what we’re left with is a whole group of people who apparently don’t understand how the imagination works.

Anyway, if I’m writing about Katara as a twenty-year-old woman, I’m imagining her as a twenty-year-old woman. And there’s nothing wrong with a twenty-year-old woman having a screaming orgasm once in a while with her twenty-two-year-old boyfriend/husband/life partner.

Things in AtLA that I wish had gotten resolved/addressed better

So we all know AtLA is the Greatest Cartoon Show Of All Time (TM) but I always felt like there were several loose ends that would’ve REALLY benefited from a Book 4: Air, and I wanted to rant about them for a second, so here they are:

1) Azula’s mental health and (possible) redemption: I really wish we had gotten to see Azula come out of the pit she dug herself into. Because of the evil acts we see her commit, we often forget that Azula was just a 14 YEAR OLD GIRL, who had spent all of her life trying to live up to the expectations of her abusive father and who was betrayed by literally everyone close to her in the end. Of course there still should’ve been consequences to her actions, but I don’t believe she was an irredeemable hopeless case. I feel like this line: 

was REALLY telling as to why she did what she did. I often wonder if maybe she’d started out just doing her best to act in a way where she would NOT be punished or hated like she’d SEEN her brother be, and then it just became so ingrained into her that it changed her. Especially since her mother and uncle, the only other adult presences in her life, kept themselves mostly removed from her and ultimately failed her (I understand that Ursa was probably trying her best to help the child she believed was most in danger from Ozai, but if your 9 YEAR OLD daughter comes out of your relationship believing “my own mother thought I was a monster” then you’ve failed as a parent. Sorry)

Zuko getting to be Azula’s Iroh, to help her crawl of the dark place she was in through compassion and kindness?? YES PLEASE!!! Also, imagine what Azula could’ve been if she’d ever decided to use her razor-sharp intellect for Good? This girl conquered Ba Sing Se with only 2 people on her side initially, little to no bloodshed, and no civilian casualties! She could’ve accomplished SO MUCH as Zuko’s advisor/right hand woman or something!

2) Aang dealing with his grief regarding the Air Nomad Genocide: truth be told, we never see Aang truly take the time to cry and mourn over the loss of literally everyone he ever knew and loved aside from those brief moments during the Southern Air Temple and The Guru, and even then he never got to dwell on it for long because the world needed him and he had to focus on that.

I’m quite sad that he never got to have that catharsis, to truly come to terms with his feelings on the matter (besides seemingly focusing all his love on Katara, as we’re told during The Guru). He should have gotten the chance to rebuild his home and find his new place in the world in the appropriately-named Book 4: Air. For example, I’ve seen theories that Ty Lee was a descendant of the remaining Air Nomads, and it would’ve been so great for it to be true and for Aang to go around the world searching for others like her and teaching them Air Nomad philosophy. Also wish we could’ve seen Aang finding and protecting the last Sky Bisons, collecting Air Nomad scriptures with Zuko’s help and spreading them across the world, or restoring the Air Temples to their former glory (maybe Teo and the Mechanist could’ve helped in that endeavor to make up for wrecking the Northern Air Temple. I never liked that at the end of that episode we’re told to think Aang was in the wrong, when literally the last remaining vestiges of his culture had been changed and almost destroyed and he had every right to be angry about it).

3) Toph’s Life Changing Field Trip with Zuko: I really dislike Zuko dismissing Toph’s talk about her parents during The Phoenix King. I feel like it’s quite a bit out of character, since he would of course be able to understand better than anyone in the Gaang how being forced to change yourself to fit in with your rich&powerful parents’ expectations of you feels. You’re telling me that the guy who immediately empathized with Katara when she mentions how the Fire Nation took her mother from her in the Crystal Catacombs (while they were still “enemies” might I add), who encouraged Aang when he felt uneasy about his firebending, who stuck with Sokka when he was feeling down about his plans failing and inspired him to keep trying, who helped Katara find closure on her mother’s death and praised her sacrifice saying “[she] was a brave woman”, and who was comforted by Toph herself just a few days before when he was feeling down about Iroh, wouldn’t take a second to empathize with her? I don’t buy it. 

Also can you imagine the kind of shenanigans two badass rule breakers like them could’ve gotten into??? 

They could’ve saved or toppled a city in one night. It would’ve been EPIC. WE WERE ROBBED. 

4) Aang and Katara’s relationship: just... so much about it. I’m not even going to get into how much I wish Zutara (or the beginnings of it) had been made canon, but if they were going to make Kataang canon I wish they had showed us MUCH MORE of the development of Katara’s feelings. I mean, on the Ember Island Players we leave them with Aang having screwed up by disregarding her boundaries and forcing a kiss (and then never apologizing for it smh), 

and then we get NOTHING until somehow during the very last 10min of the series she all of a sudden reciprocates his feelings in full???? Without anything getting resolved????

Like what?!?! How did she go from A to B???? At least show me how she debated the matter! Show me how she talked about it with someone, or mulled it over on her own! Show me what exactly she found that she loved ROMANTICALLY about Aang! Show me him apologizing for overstepping and her forgiving him! Show me Katara stop babying Aang gradually! Show me Katara having cute blushing moments like she does for her other crushes (namely Jet and Haru) SPRINKLED ALL THROUGHOUT THE STORY WITH INCREASING FREQUENCY INSTEAD OF ONLY ON 2-3 ISOLATED INSTANCES IN THE WHOLE SHOW, WHILE OTHERWISE SHE ACTS LIKE HIS MOM OR OLDER SISTER!!!! Arrrggh we should’ve gotten a Book 4 if only so we could end on that kiss on a balcony properly. They both deserved better than we got.

5) Katara’s role in the world Post-War: from what little I’ve heard of the comics, it seemed as if Katara was relegated to the role of “Aang’s girlfriend”, which was reinforced by what we saw in LoK where she mostly stays in the South Pole while all her other friends are helping save the world. She doesn’t even seem to have her own statue! I find this highly disrespectful of her character, since the Katara we know would’ve “never turned her back on people who need her” and would’ve fought tooth and nail to make the world a better place. She never would’ve been content as a stay-at-home wife. She ends up “in the healing huts” just like Pakku thought she should and that’s so sad😔 I wish we could’ve seen her become a political activist protesting for women’s right to learn combat waterbending at the North Pole, an environmentalist/ecoterrorist, a medical volunteer, an ambassador for Aang’s new Air Nation or for the Water Tribes, a warrior putting the Fear of God(TM) into anyone who tried to assassinate Zuko or Aang, or even all of the above. Katara is a BAMF with strong opinions and we should’ve seen her do something with them goddammit.

Korrasami Secret Santa 2021

Hi, Korrasami fam. You know the drill. :)

We’re doing Korrasami Secret Santa for 2021! @threehoursfromtroy and I are doing this again :). (Yeah, I just copied and pasted this from Korrasami Secret Santa 2020 xD). 4 years in a row, let’s go. :)

The rules are the same:

Korrasami creators will be able to gift one another with Secret Santa gifts. Whether it be fics, art, videos, animations…the fun’s all there! (It doesn’t have to be holiday-themed! It can be whatever you want :)

The Process:

This Secret Santa exchange will be done through drawnames.com, which is a Secret Santa Name Generator. You’ll need your email for this, and you can message me it directly on Tumblr (I’ll gather everyone’s names up, and put them into the generator when it’s time to draw names.)

The due date to sign up is 11:59 PM Nov 29, 2021 PDT (I’d like everyone to have ample time to do their Secret Santa gifts). :)

Most likely, you’ll need to make an account on drawnames.com (you don’t need to, but it’s recommended.  When you get to writing your Wish List on there, under ‘Hobbies and Interests’, make two different lists: One for ‘Fic Requests’, the other for ‘Art Requests’. If a writer draws your name, you’ll have a suggestion for what you want them to write. If an artist draws your name, they’ll have an idea of what to create! (Also, originally, this project only had fanfic and fanart- but if anyone can contribute any other talents, that’d be swell!)

Example: Fic Request- I want Korra and Asami cuddling at home with a fireplace!

Art Request: I want Korrasami going otter-penguin sledding!

The fic and art requests can be the same, or they can be different. Please limit it to one, or if you can’t choose, then two options. You can also note things that you don’t want (i.e. No smut or NSFW work!). You can be as specific as you wish.

Also, everyone else! We recognize that there may be people in the fandom who don’t create content, but still want to contribute! @lamftw​ came up with these great ideas two years ago, if you’d still like to participate in the Secret Santa. You can:

As It Was

On a stormy night, Bolin is haunted by his former days of homelessness and abandonment, until Opal reminds him of how far he’s come. Based on @theorangestar comic about Bolin not liking storms until their child is born on a stormy night.

No one on this godforsaken website cares about Bopal content so I’ve taken it upon myself to create more.

It was storms that took Bolin back to the streets of Republic City. He laid awake, listening to the rain striking the window and thunder cracking across the sky, even as Opal curled into his side and Ryu dozed in the adjacent room. Lightning forked across the night, accompanied by a blast of wind that rattled the house to its foundation. Bolin pressed himself into the mattress and tried to focus on the beating of his heart, but to no avail. Thunder rolled through the darkness and once again he was huddled in a half-rotted crate with Mako, deep within the maze of alleys and winding streets that make up the city’s poorest district. 

“It’s just thunder, Bolin,” Mako said. Flames danced at his fingertips, and fear ebbed at the edge of his voice. “Nothing to worry about, we’re okay.”

Bolin buried his face into Mako’s scarf. He took a deep breath, hoping to push beyond the mildew and grime and find the musty scent of his father that always seemed to hide in the fabric’s folds. 

The wind picked up and Bolin squeezed his eyes shut. “Mako, what if we live like this forever?” he asked. 

A great boom ripped across the night sky. Mako’s flame faltered, and he pulled Bolin further into the corner of the box. “It won’t be like that, I promise.”

“How do you know?” Bolin said. Tears were welling in his eyes. 

Mako hesitated. The wind continued to scream and the rain beat against the outside of the crate. “I just know,” Mako finally replied. 

He started to cry now. Bolin could hardly remember his parents. They existed only as disembodied voices, a pair of hands reaching for him or a face just out of his memory’s reach, but he wanted them. 

“Bolin?” Opal’s voice jolted him back to reality. She was awake.

“Opal,” Bolin said, caressing her cheek. Her hair was mussed and her eyes bleary with sleep, but the sight of her still made his heart leap in his chest. 

“It’s late, is everything okay?” she asked. 

He shifted, “Um, yeah, just couldn’t sleep.”

“You’re using that weird tone again,” Opal said, focusing her gaze on Bolin. “What’s going on?”

Bolin sighed and sat up. “I’m thinking about when Mako and I were homeless again.”

“Oh, Bolin,” Opal said. She moved to his side and put a hand on top of his, moving her fingers in slow circles over his skin. “You want to tell me about it?”

“It was just so lonely,” he said. “Mako took care of me, but he was a kid, too, and there was only so much he could do. When storms rolled in, we were just stranded in the cold and rain. I just wanted warmth, shelter, safety, something we could hold on to.”

Opal hummed and brushed her fingers up his arm and over his shoulder, bringing them to rest at the nape of his neck. She played with the hair there as Bolin exhaled and leaned into her touch. 

“We’ve made other memories on stormy nights since then,” she said. 

“Hm?” Bolin replied, closing his eyes as Opal’s fingers brushed his cheek and jaw. 

She smiled, “Remember when Ryu was born?”

Bolin’s heart lifted. He could still smell the sea as he steered Juicy over the churning waters of Yue Bay in the dead of night. Opal was behind him, groaning from her contractions, and rain was pouring over them. Air Temple Island was just ahead, and despite every bone in his body screaming to go back, to give up on the midwife Pema recommended and thousands of years of Air Nomad tradition, he plowed ahead. He spent the night at Opal’s side as she cried out and crushed his hand in hers and the storm roared on. It finally broke at dawn, just as the first rays of sun were peeking over the horizon and his son was born. 

Bolin took Ryu in his arms, squeezing himself into the narrow space beside Opal at the edge of her bed. Their friends and family were too numerous to fit in the room, and instead took turns fawning over the baby and loitering in the hall. 

When it was Mako’s chance, he knelt beside the bed and Bolin passed him his nephew. As he cradled Ryu, the stoic mask he’d worn for years finally slipped, and Mako cried. 

“That might’ve been the best day of my life,” Bolin said as the memory faded. 

Opal laughed, “Might’ve been? What are the other contenders?”

“The day I married you,” Bolin answered, grinning. 

A cry sounded from the next room. 

Opal slipped out of bed and moved towards the door, “Ryu’s awake.” A moment later she returned with the baby and settled beside Bolin. He had stopped crying, and instead gazed at them with wide, moss-colored eyes. 

“Not scared of storms too, I hope,” Bolin says as he took Ryu in his arms. 

Opal smiled and leaned against his shoulder, “I think he just missed his daddy.”

Bolin pulled Ryu to his chest as he cooed softly. “You mind if we keep him in here tonight? With us?” he asked. 

“I think that would be great,” Opal replied. She leaned over to brush a strand of inky hair from Ryu’s face and placed a kiss on Bolin’s cheek. 

“It’s late and you have to be at the air temple in the morning,” he reminded her. “We should get to bed.”

“I know,” Opal sighed. “I just love watching you two together, you’re a great dad.”

Bolin’s heart swelled at the compliment. He shifted Ryu to the crook of his arm and with his free hand brought Opal towards him to press his lips to hers. 

They pulled apart and Opal took Ryu from him, tucking him in the space between them. Bolin laid down, watching as Opal settled into place and the rise and fall of her chest evened into the steady rhythm of sleep. 

The storm had died down, and all that could be heard was raindrops pattering outside. He felt something stir beside him, and looked down to see Ryu against his chest. His days of hiding on the streets with no one but Mako at his side were long over, he realized. He’d built the family he’d longed for during those nights, and with them he no longer had to weather the storm alone.
