i’m very unhappy with the new atla series announcement btw, if anyone was wondering. regardless of what the actual writing in the new series has done with korra (i'm hoping it again was not her fault and people just blame her for no reason), the announcement avatar studios made makes her seem like an incompetent, destructive avatar. WHICH SHE IS NOT.
of course i know one day she'd end up dying and someone would take her place, but to outright call her humanity's DESTROYER is foul. especially knowing how many people in the fandom love her. that's one quick way to lose a bunch of potential viewers. not a great move, avatar studios.

just finished my atla rewatch and i can confirm it's still a 10/10
but interestingly, one of the things that was bouncing around my mind while watching the 4-part finale was "they're just kids". as i get older (i'm 19) and i revisit my favourite media (not just atla but we'll use it for this example) i'm noticining that what's catching me the most is the fact that all these fantastic characters are so, so young. aang being THIRTEEN, saving the entire world, and zuko being the same age when he was banished and left to fulfil an impossible task. sokka being left at home at 11/12 - a CHILD - in charge of protecting his entire tribe. azula being 14, being completely alone, having a psychotic break.. at FOURTEEN.
i have such a different perspective being older than all these characters now. at their ages, i never really considered how much they were doing and were capable of so young. now during rewatches, it's always on my mind.

babe be honest if i was wrongfully imprisoned in a high security prison which was situated inside a literal volcano in enemy territory in the middle of a global war would u fly in on a war balloon with your enemy-turned-teammate (who also happened to burn down my village) and rescue me while u were actually looking for your dad who got captured yes or no?????

just realised something about iroh’s tale in ‘tales of ba sing se’:
each scene shows iroh providing help/guidance to strangers, and these strangers get older as the tale progresses.
the tale opens with iroh comforting a little boy.
Tumblr media
then, providing guidance to a group of preteen/teenage boys.
Tumblr media
finally, he helps a young adult man.
Tumblr media
he helps all these boys, but never an old man.
idk if anyone’s mentioned this before (and if so my bad), but could this be a reflection of how iroh’s relationship with his son was cut short? having iroh show his kindness and his fatherly instinct to a variety of strangers in place of his late son? and why is that honestly so sad omg :(
‘tales of ba sing se’ writer andrew huebner when i catch you…. omg…

“you must be proud.” // “so proud… and sad.”
INSANELY underrated piece of dialogue. i feel like we talk a lot about dialogue in other big scenes (i.e. “i am going to speak my mind and you are going to listen” + “i was sad because you had lost your way” + “hope is something you give yourself” and so many more) but this simple, small line and the little pause between ‘proud’ and ‘sad’ ….. oh my god. 😖
not to say that the dialogue in those scenes isn’t amazing also, but “so proud… and sad” really gets me in a way none of the others do. it’s the perfect thing to say after such a heavy sequence of battle and sacrifice scenes. it’s such a beautiful way of showing arnook’s love for his daughter - he knew she would have to sacrifice herself to give back to the moon spirit, and was in full support of her bravery (cause damn, she was SO brave) but he was also just.. sad. and that’s so valid.
it’s not a very beautiful line, sure, but it works perfectly.
