summary ; tom decides to âproposeâ to you during a dinner with your cast members
pairing ; tom blyth x fem!reader
notes ; TBOSAS cast, fluff, v light mentions of alc? kinda pda, idk js some sweet stuff
a/n ; guys iâm so badly in love with this man like⊠also this is so short pls forgive međ„Č
you and some of the cast from tbosas were back in nyc, celebrating the wrap up of the film at a restaurant with one of the most gorgeous views ever. the city lights, buildings, people, and cars were all visible, and it truly was a sight for sore eyes. you wouldnât stop babbling about how pretty it was to tom while you waited for the waiters to seat you guys. although he didnât mind. he simply just nodded along with a smile as you spoke with passion in your eyes.
currently you sat next to your boyfriend, his hand resting lightly on your thigh as you conversed with rachel about how difficult it was to play the guitar. it was something you were always fascinated by but never quite understood.
you felt the warmth of tomâs hand disappear from its place on your thigh. glancing over at him, you saw him fumbling around with a napkin in his hand. you shrugged it off as nothing and continued your conversation with rachel.
âyeah! like itâs just so hard, and donât even get me started about how much worse it is with nails..â you complained.
âspeaking of nails, i need a manicure.â rachel noted, laying her hand out to look at her nails which were in perfect shape.
âoh, donât remind me.â you chuckled and leaned your head on tomâs shoulder. wiggling your fingers around, you spoke again. "my ring fingers looking quite bare as well... don't you think, baby?"
rachel and josh laughed quietly when tom raised a brow at you, obviously confused as to what you were trying to get at. you shook your head, dismissing him with a laugh.
the waitress poured vodka cranberry into each of your glasses before rachel began to discuss what her dream wedding would be like. hunter piped in, giggling about how cute it'd be for her walk to down the aisle with her dog. you began teasing josh about when he was going to pop the question, earning a playful eye roll from him.
"i should be asking you that! well, tom. you guys have been dating for centuries." he retorted.
the brunette next to you looked up at the mention of his name. the corner of his mouth twitched up into a slight smirk. "actually, its been four years and 9 months."
"so almost half a decade?"
"don't tell me you've got the days and seconds," hunter teased, a grin on her face. you giggled to yourself quietly. knowing how your boyfriend was, he probably did.
tom pressed a kiss to your head and went back to messing around with his napkin as he and josh shot snarky jokes at each other. they settled down when the food arrived, placed in front of you on beautiful tableware. the borders of the plates were painted with golden patterns. the thought of stealing the plate and taking it home had even crossed your mind.
the cold liquid of your cranberry flavored beverage sliced your tongue when you felt a tug on your dress, followed by a familiar accent besides your ear.
âpsst. sweetheart,â tom whispered. with a turn of the head, you looked down at his hands. in his hold was a paper napkin shaped into a ring. "will you do me the honor of becoming my... wife? fiance? wait which is it?" he glanced at josh, eliciting a soft laugh from you.
a breathy laugh came from his lips and he brought the ring closer to you. a sweet smile covered your face as you held your hand out. "I would love to be your wife-fiance."
tom slid the paper ring around your ring finger, bringing your hand up to his pink lips and kissing it gently. your friends squealed and clapped, someone groaned and told the two of you to 'get a room'. your lips met tom's for a second before whispering into his ear.
"its wife, by the way."
"stop. i knew that!" he rolled his eyes, nudging you away.
you giggled and wiggled your fingers around, putting your ring out on display for everyone to see. "oh yeahh, I'm an engaged woman now."
"only took four years and 9 months," nick joked from the other side of the table.
you brought the wine glass to your lips, taking another sip. "haters gonna hate."
rachel laughed. tom's hand was back on your thigh, his thumb rubbing against your soft skin. everyone was back to eating and light conversation was heard around the table. strands of brown hair tickled your neck and warm breath hit your ear. "how about we work on making you a pregnant engaged woman?"
you gasped, smacking his forearm. "tom!"
he chuckled against your ear before leaning back. âthat wasnât a no.â
i wanted to write for this man so bad but had no ideas and no motivation so hereâs this.. anyways i LOVED the hunger games and im so happy they turned tbosas into a film.
apologies for how poorly written this is LMAO

If the Spit Hits the Fan (Glee) Part XV
Follows pt I, pt II, pt III, pt IV, pt V, part VI, pt VII, part VIII, part IX, part X, part XI, part XII, part XIIIÂ and part XIV.
Being Sebastian's boyfriend really isn't that much different from being his friend. They do a lot of the same things, and talk about the same stuff, only now there's hand-holding and kissing and cuddling with it. Apart from the touching though? Nothing really changes much.
Which kind of makes it sound like how it was with Blaine.
It's not though.
Sebastian will hold his hand in the hallway without worrying about being seen. And yes, Dalton is different from McKinley â so, so much different, and safer â but Blaine even hesitated to hold Kurt's hand in the choir room, surrounded by friends.
Sebastian kisses him in a way that never leaves Kurt doubting there's attraction, and has to stop his hands from wandering too far on a regular basis â yet never making Kurt worry he won't stop.
Sebastian makes Kurt have to stop himself, both from allowing it and from doing his own wandering. They're still too new to go there, no matter how much Kurt's hormones sit up and beg every time Sebastian touches him. (They'll get there, Kurt's sure, just... Step by step, and not yet.)
Sebastian reaches out for Kurt without looking â sometimes seemingly without thinking â to pull him close, and always makes a space for him.
And when Sebastian sings, it's with Kurt, or for him, not at him.
It's a far cry from scheduled make-outs and avoiding even PG13 levels of PDA and being made to feel like his boyfriend is more interested in his own hand than in Kurt.
It's amazing.
There's a rainbow rose hanging on Kurt's door on Valentine's day. He and Sebastian have been dating for two days â a day and a half, if he was to be picky â and Kurt knows from last year's insanity that there's not a flower shop within two hours of Vesterville that carries rainbow roses. They have to be ordered special, and with a lot more warning than two days.
Kurt's not the least bit ashamed about how he squeals, or how he turns on his heel and kisses his boyfriend (!) for long enough to be a little dizzy afterwards.
This isn't to say that Sebastian is a perfect boyfriend. He's not. Then again, neither is Kurt. He's working from romantic movies and the examples from the New directions, and of course from his time with Blaine. Neither is a good road map. Romantic movies have so many flaws Kurt don't really want to examine, and a lot of his favorites are set too far back in time to be useful as guidelines. The loves lives of his old glee mates are...well. They're flawed too, when seen without rose-colored glasses and envy.
As for his relationship with Blaine... Even if he's not counting how it ended that relationship was so very less than perfect, and honestly it was both their faults. Kurt's not without blame, he knows that and can admit it without somehow pretending what Blaine did wrong never happened.
So he's trying to learn from his mistakes, and other people's mistakes, and he does his best to communicate with Sebastian â who does the same in return.
Also, no one can say that they don't argue. They definitely do. They have from the beginning, and they're both opinionated passionate people, so why should they stop now? Their relationship has changed â they themselves haven't.
It's just that they manage to argue in a way that works. That doesn't makes Kurt pull out his claws to eviscerate Sebastian, that doesn't scare Kurt, or make him give in to âpreserve the peaceâ. That, right there, was one of the things that had sent his relationship with Blaine down the wrong turn. When he'd first told his dad that he'd begun dating Blaine Burt Hummel had told him never to go to bed angry with his partner. He'd meant to sort out arguments and disagreements, but Kurt had interpreted it as needing to back down and push down his anger or hurt. With Sebastian he doesn't.
They argue, because that's who â and how â they are, but they do it in as mature and healthy way as they are able to, being teenagers. And they apologize if they step over the line. Not Kurt apologizes, regardless, with Sebastian pouting until he does, but both of them.
If Kurt had to, he'd call it damned near perfect. Instead he'll just say it's good, and he's happy.
That's never something to look down on.
The week of Regionals is weird. Kurt's never felt as prepared or as calm with a competition approaching, which is rather telling. The rest of the Warblers are a different story though. Kurt has made it clear that his primary goal is to beat the Troubletones, and his friends are feeling the pressure. They even ask if Kurt and Sebastian won't reconsider singing 'Human Nature'.
âLook, guys, I'm honored, really, that you would trust me, us like that. But I want to win more than I want that solo. And even if we ignore the fact that Ohio doesn't seem ready for a gay duet, I really do think the setlist we have is stronger as is. The Troubletones have a great presence, and both Mercedes and Santana are awesomely talented. However, everything about the Troubletones are built around them. The rest of the girls are background and dancing. If we go on with a number that's the same they are going to win, for no other reason than that most people find girls prettier and nicer to look at.
âBut if we go on as an actual choir, for a show choir competition? We'll win. I'm sure of it. We've worked so hard with our songs, and I wouldn't change a thing about our setlist.â
And it's true. They have an amazing setlist, and everything flows in a way that makes Kurt feel practically professional, and he's not giving that â and its chance to win â up to stare longingly at Sebastian while singing a song that exposes them to the core.
No. Kurt's going to have quite a lot more time in the spotlight than he'd expected when turning down a proper solo. He's going to sing with his friends, and his boyfriend, and he's going to show McKinley what it means to be a team onstage.
The Troubletones are just as amazing onstage as Kurt thought. They've done a good job picking their songs, and Mercedes still has the best voice he's ever heard live. Santana's not quite as talented, but give her the right song â which these are â and she'll blow your mind. Their choreography showcases the girls poached from the Cheerios without making Mercedes look too far behind, and their clothes look good.
Kurt would vote for them any day, even with Rachel being given a place in the background, except this one. This is going to be his day. He meets Sebastians eyes as they line up and nods.
Showtime.
'I want You Back' does exactly what it's meant to, namely getting the audience in a party mood. As the last notes flows into the first from 'Man in the Mirror' the mood shifts and Kurt feels his own shift with it. His solo feels a little raw, because in no way can he sing those lines without being reminded of all the crap he's gone through over the past 6 months.
â...a willow deeply scared, somebody's broken heart and a washed out dream...â
Well. His heart might have been broken, and his dreams about Blaine did wash out. But he's got new dreams, and his hearts healed, and no matter the scars he's whole where it matters. And even if he wasn't? He's looking in the mirror, and he's changing.
They bring the party back with their last song, giving their all transforming the sounds of 'Beat It' to sounds that can be reproduced by the human throat. The dancing is the most demanding Kurt's ever done onstage, and he knows he will definitely be beat after. But they look and sound awesome, and that's all that matters.
Or maybe not, he ruefully thinks as he sees Finn on his feet, jumping up and down and whooping as the Warblers are proclaimed the winners and Rachel looks like she's been pelted with eggs again.
âYou stole our songs!â
Of course. All Kurt wants to do is get on the bus, go back to Dalton and celebrate. Okay, shower, then celebrate. So naturally Rachel is waiting to ambush him. Well, that's not going to go the way she's probably thinking.
âReally? Really Rachel, you're going there? You know very well that we didn't steal anything. Oh, I know that there was a suggestion that the New Directions do Michael for Sectionals, but I also know that you were the one who refused to accept it.
âYou really blew it there. Michael is a great choice for Sectionals or Regionals, what with the Ohio mindset, and I'm pretty sure you would have won with the setlist the guys suggested. I'm not surprised you put a stop to it though.â
Rachel draws back, looking first shocked, then insulted, then finally like an angry goose, complete with hissing sound. He's not letting it touch him though, lets it run over him, one might say, like water over a goose.
âThere are no songs in Michael Jacksons discography that's a given for you, no certainty that you'll be featured. And in the end, that's what mattered, wasn't it? Not that the New Directions won, but that you won. You wanted to beat the Troubletones, didn't you? Wanted to show that you were better than Mercedes, wanted to prove that her beating you when auditioning for Maria was just a fluke. Wanted to prove what everyone knows, that's she's every bit as good as you, and sometimes better, is wrong.
âWell, congratulations. You got what you wanted in terms of the setlist and the spotlight, but you fucked up everything else. And not just for you, but for everyone.â
An expression of pain flies across Rachel's face, and he pushes the knife in a little bit further.
âWe weren't as blind though. The minute Finn told me about the Michael setlist I knew it was a winner. As did the other Warblers. I asked Finn first, and Sam and Puck. They didn't think we needed their permission, as you didn't use the songs, but they gave it any way.â
Kurt looks at Rachel, looks at the way she's still fuming, still refusing to see any other side than her own. It won't matter what he says â she'll keep ignoring any and all arguments against her. Once he might have tried harder to make her understand, but as things are he just wants to leave. His boyfriend's waiting and that makes Kurt out of time to spend on his former friend.
âYour loss, our gain.â
He starts to leave, but thinks better of it. He's got one more jab in him.
âOh, and Rachel? Don't worry. Going to Nationals is a privilege, and we won't waste it. We've already gotten started on a setlist.â
It's petty, but. So's she.
That evening the Warblers celebrate as thoroughly as a bunch of uniformed boys in a well-staffed boarding school can. This means that it's late when Kurt drags Sebastian to his room (unlike him Sebastian's in a single), but neither of them is under the influence of anything but happiness.
That's important to Kurt as they tumble into Sebastian's bed while kissing, because he doesn't want there to be any doubt in Sebastian's mind that when Kurt pulls off his shirt and then goes for his fly it's because he wants to.
Having Sebastian stop him is frustrating, to say the very least.
âHey, what are you doing?â
It's only the fact that it's Sebastian, and that he's shown himself trustworthy in so many ways over the past months that stops Kurt from storming out.
âI thought we... You know?â
It's so hard to say, to open himself up like this, years of being told he's a predator, or ugly, or plain wrong getting just as much in his way as the fact that he's never done this, and the only time he's been even close wasn't even about him.
Apparently he's going to have to use his words regardless, because Sebastian's not taking the opening.
âI thought we could have sex.â There. Words. Consent. Door wide open.
And yet Sebastian's still not taking the opening.
âWhat's the hurry?â
Kurt pulls back a little, hurt blooming.
âNo, no, don't. Talk to me, okay? I'm a bit surprised I guess. We haven't even been dating for two months yet, and I know this is new for you.â
âSo? It's not like I'm waiting for marriage.â
Kurt knows he sounds a bit snippy, and he has sort of been waiting â not for marriage, but for something, some feeling of more. He's got that feeling with Sebastian, so what's the point of waiting any longer? Everyone else his age (or so it feels) is having sex so why can't he?
Some of it must bleed through because Sebastian gets that âahaâ look, and nods a bit.
âLook, regardless of what I might have said or implied when chasing Blaine, I'm actually not the whore of Babylon. I have, however, rounded a few bases and enjoyed them. I think you'd enjoy them too, and I would love to find out first hand. But that doesn't have to mean we go straight to fucking.â Kurt blushes, because he might be ready to do it, but those words...
âSo. I'm not going to push, and I'm not going to rush. I am more than interested though, I'm just happy to take it a bit slow. To build up to every step. As far as I'm concerned you've earned that.â
Sebastian's looking so earnest it kills Kurt annoyance, and then lightning-quick it's replaced by a vicked look than makes him shiver all over.
âI wouldn't mind showing you the first of many, many bases now though. How about it, babe?â
Kurt doesn't mind either, neither then nor the next day.

The Wasted Potential of Piper McLeanâs Backstory
I think itâs safe to say that Piperâs backstory was easily the weakest, most boring, and worst-written one of all the characters in Heroes of Olympus, but it didnât have to be. Riordan wasted a lot of potential for her backstory that couldâve added much more to her character just for âMy dad doesnât pay attention to me!!11!!!11!â and then showing multiple flashbacks of Piper and Tristan spending quality father-daughter time alone together and completely invalidating all of Piperâs annoying complaining. Not only that, but Piperâs backstory is just a boring copy of Rachelâs.Â
So, this is what Riordan did with Piperâs backstory:
1. âNeglectfulâ dad. Piper spends 50% of The Lost Hero complaining about how little time her dad spends with her (and 49% thinking about Jason) instead of focusing on actually helping him. And while neglectful parenting can be very dangerous to a childâs happiness and social skills, Piper clearly wasnât neglected or âignoredâ. How do I know? Well for one, there are multiple flashbacks in The Mark of Athena of Piper and her dad hanging out- surfing, researching Greek mythology stories, watching Tristanâs movies and laughing over them, Tristan telling Piper Cherokee stories, etc.- and two, Piper isnât unhappy nor unsocial and doesnât show any symptoms of child neglect besides being clingy and possessive (but remember that the McLeans werenât always rich, and were actually quite poor before, so Piper didnât learn that behavior from her father). Besides, for someone who is claimed to be âsmarter than all her other siblingsâ, Piper clearly doesnât know that itâs her fatherâs agent that controls his schedule, not Tristan.
2. Rich and pretty= bad. In a lot of different circumstances, being rich and pretty has its cons, but Piperâs complaints about it are completely offbeat. Why? Cause we donât know why sheâs complaining about it. She complains about being rich, but why? She complains about being âtoo prettyâ (as if thatâs something people legitimately complain about), but why? Thereâs no backstory or reasoning given to this. If there was, Piperâs constant complaining might have been valid, but Riordan just threw it into her story to give the readers a reason to take pity on and feel sympathy for her, and because he didnât give Piper an actual reason for her complaining, it made it unbearable. If he had written it in smaller doses (much smaller) and wrote it realistically, it couldâve been really awesome. Because if youâre going to complain about something, make sure youâre complaining for a reason. Why does Piper hate being rich? Why does Piper hate having a bunch of awesome things most people would kill for? Why does Piper hate being attractive? And how Riordan tried to validate her complaining with âShe wants to be normalâ- NO ONE WANTS TO BE NORMAL. What teenager wouldnât want a private airplane and giant mansion after living in a shitty wood house most of their life? Cause yes, Riordan, write your character complaining about her private chef making her a gold-wrapped sandwich while most of the other characters were worrying about where their next meal was going to come from and have her complain about having things while most people didnât have 5% of what she had. Thatâll totally make her a likable character. Thereâs a difference between being modest and being ungrateful.
3. Bullies. Being bullied sucks, and Piper has every right to complain about it. But...she didnât. She didnât complain at all. She didnât even care about it. So sheâs perfectly fine with being bullied and pushed around for her ethnicity, but her dad working a little overtime is the end of the world? How??? Besides that, Riordan didnât write in bullies to shine a light on racism towards First Nations people, but for one reason only- to degrade femininity. Piper is described as a âtomboyâ (even though she doesnât actually dress tomboyish, but thatâs for another mini-rant) and the only bullies towards her we have been introduced to are girly-girls- Isabel and her group of friends who wore âmatching pink tops and enough makeup for a Halloween partyâ, Drew Tanaka, Khione, etc. Thatâs not progressive, itâs sexist. âFemininityâ and âweaknessâ are not synonymous, and nor are âmasculinityâ and âstrengthâ. Also, how did Isabel and her friends not know who Piperâs dad was? Iâm pretty sure Tristan didnât hide her from the entire world (though that wouldâve been a way cooler backstory).Â
4. Stealing. Anyone else out there who also knows that Piper isnât actually a rebellious trouble-maker? Cause she isnât. She got kicked out of four schools for being accused of stealing, but she never actually canonically broke any rules. As for the stealing part of her backstory, it was really, really lame. It was just a bad, invalid excuse to make Piper look like the badass and cool trouble-maker when in reality, all she did was politely ask for things. Not exactly âbadass and rebelliousâ, and it was completely unnecessary. Piper wanted attention from her dad, but she got it multiple times and couldâve gotten it in many other different ways that didnât enforce the racist âkleptomaniac First Nationâ stereotype.Â
And this is what he shouldâve done with her backstory:
1. Rich and pretty= distrust. Piper was reluctant to tell Annabeth about her famous father in The Lost Hero, but for the wrong reason. She didnât want Annabeth to know about her movie-star dad because she didnât want the âattentionâ, but she shouldâve not wanted Annabeth to know out of distrust. And by âdistrustâ, I mean ânot knowing if they want to know you for you or for your moneyâ. This is a common con for rich and famous people, and they often turn paranoid and distrusting because they can never be certain if someone wants to be their friend because they think that theyâre a cool person or if they want to be their friend because theyâre rich and famous. That wouldâve been a perfect reason for Piper to be reluctant to make new friends (especially after announcing to her whole cabin that her father was Tristan McLean), but she didnât care. She even said that she âhated using the famous dad cardâ but never showed signs of being dubious of new people who knew who she was. As for being pretty, a lot of attractive people are also distrustful because they never know if someone wants to date them for their personality or for their looks (and in Jasonâs case, it was definitely the latter. No one wants to kiss someone a few minutes after knowing them and never actually talking to them one-on-one and it be anything but sexual attraction). Piper shouldâve been very reluctant to get into a relationship (especially after Jason embarrassed and sexualized her in front of the entire camp calling her a âknock-outâ) and it wouldâve added a valid reason for her to complain about her looks. Cause again- why does she hate being attractive? Cause sheâs tired of being stereotyped? No, cause she stereotypes other people. Cause she doesnât want to be attractive? No, cause she never said anything about that. There was no reason for it, so it was a huge waste of many chapters and made for a horrible character arc.Â
2. Alone in a big house. Piper complained about her dad being âtoo busyâ despite him being a very loving, caring, and inclusive father, but why didnât she even mention the other part of it- being alone? Sure she had personal chefs, assistants, etc. with her, but no one related to her and no one who wasnât being paid to be around her. Being alone sucks, but being alone in a giant house with a bunch of games and other stuff youâd love to share with another person but canât? Damn. Speaking of which, what about Piperâs past schools? Five schools and no confirmed friends? Itâs not like Piper has a hard time making friends since she was able to become friends with Leo (and only after being at the Wilderness School for a few months versus full school years at the others). Riordan couldâve written a very interesting backstory that didnât have to relate to monsters (like Leoâs) but focused on the wrong parts.Â
3. Impossible (and toxic) beauty standards and pressure. While being unattractive (or thinking youâre unattractive, cause youâre not ugly, youâre just not your type) sucks, being attractive (and extremely attractive) has multiple cons. Not only is there- racism in the beauty industry, societyâs toxic and even deadly standards of beauty, not being open to relationships out of fear of only being liked for your looks, fear of not being taken seriously and being stereotyped, being cat-called and even the fear of rape, being compared to others, etc., but thereâs the constant pressure (especially from family members, friends, and peers) of showing off your looks even if you donât want to or are not comfortable doing so. I have an âhour-glassâ shaped body, and at first I loved my body and was very confident about it, but after the constant urging from my family members to wear tight (almost revealing) clothes to show off my body starting at only twelve years old despite me not being comfortable wearing those types of clothes, I hated my body and wore exclusively baggy and layered clothes for nearly 3+ years. This wouldâve been perfect for Piperâs backstory, especially since her mother literally sexualized her by putting her in an âembarrassingly low v-neck dressâ in front of tons of campers. She wore basic, simple clothes, but she only wore them to avoid being labelled a âgirly-girlâ. Itâs not even canon if she actually likes those clothes or are actually comfortable wearing them or not, she only wore them to avoid being something else she didnât like. It couldâve led to an awesome character arc- going from insecure about your looks because people keep pressuring you into showing them off to only wearing and doing what you like. Piper tried to hide her looks, but for what reason? To avoid being stereotyped as âgirlyâ? Yes, Piper, because girly-girls are the only type of girls that are pretty. Obviously. Â
4. Charity. Rachel rocked this one. If Piper wanted to be kind and modest, why didnât she give any of the things she had to people who actually needed it? Instead of moping about how rich you are, give the things you donât want to those who need it. Itâs a lot more effective and moral than spending all your days complaining and sulking, and itâs much more likely to gain readersâ favor than constant whining.Â
5. Stereotypes. Riordan tried so hard to avoid the âsnobby rich girlâ stereotype, but in my opinion- he shouldâve utilized it. Piper went from âI donât care about what I haveâ...to the exact same thing. She didnât grow at all regarding her fortune and riches. Even in The Trials of Apollo, she lost everything and didnât even care. Who wouldnât care if they lost everything they had? Piper couldâve been grateful that she still had her dad and humanity while still being upset she lost everything. Back on topic- Piper couldâve gone from spoiled, obnoxious, and money-obsessed to âIt doesnât matter what I have or what I am but who I amâ. She shouldâve started off as the basic, stereotypical rich girl- a greedy, selfish, idealistic, spoiled, rude, dramatic, and overly ambitious primadonna diva who tried to buy her happiness and relationships but realized she couldnât fill the hole in her heart with money and lipstick. Or how about the reckless homewrecker who broke hearts just for fun before realizing she actually wanted a real relationship, so started letting people in? Riordan avoiding the rich girl stereotype to make Piper more likable is what helped make her dislikable, because it ruined the chances of a good character arc. Besides, while not showing it on the surface, Riordan did actually sink into the rich girl stereotype by making Piper a selfish, ungrateful, and attention-seeking whiny brat, but she never grew from that or even realized she was doing it.Â
6. Looks donât matter. The fandom thinks that Piper is the one who stands for âlooks donât matter/itâs whatâs on the inside that mattersâ, but sheâs the opposite. She: -dismissed Percy and stereotyped him based off how he looked -hated her entire cabin and mother just because they were girly -hated and stereotyped Drew just cause she was wearing jewelry and makeup -constantly fussed over her looks and looked at herself more times in one chapter than all the other characters did combined -commented on Jasonâs appearance multiple times, etc. So no, she isnât the one who stands for that. The character who doesnât think about their appearance at all is the one who stands for that, not the character who thinks about their looks 24/7. She shouldâve been the character to stand for that, cause who better than the daughter of beauty and a famous, attractive movie-star? She shouldâve been the one to scream to the mortal world that âHey, Iâm attractive but Iâm not my attractivenessâ.Â
7. Racism. If Riordan wanted to expand on Piperâs character, why not write about the number one thing she shouldâve been struggling with before being introduced to the mythological world- racism? Sheâs Cherokee, and there are multiple things against First Nations people nowadays like horrible living in reservations, living in the land she knows was stolen from her people and watching her father pay taxes to the very people who stole it, etc. Bullies suck, but bullies are common. The struggles of First Nations people is not, and it shouldâve been added to Piperâs backstory not only to make her more realistic and better-written, but to shine a light on the racism and oppression against First Nation tribes.Â
8. Monster attacks. So Piper is the daughter of a rich and famous movie star, most likely used multiple different pieces of technology, was out in the open only a few hours away from Camp Jupiter, and was out in the mortal world her whole life, but didnât experience any monster attacks whatsoever, even at fifteen years old? Thatâs extremely unrealistic and dumb. Monster attacks shouldâve been used to make her backstory more interesting and realistic.Â
9. ADHD and dyslexia. Was I the only one bothered that Piper didnât show any signs of ADHD or dyslexia? Every demigod has them and Frank is the only one confirmed not to, but Piper had no trouble focusing, staying still, reading, concentrating, forgetfulness, short attention spans, etc. She was even able to read the directory at Medeaâs Department Store, the writing on the wall at the Cyclops-infiltrated warehouse, Greek stories with her dad, etc. In canon, she doesnât even have ADHD or dyslexia, but showing her struggling with it (especially as the daughter of a famous movie star whoâs pressured into being perfect and poised at all times) wouldâve added so much to her backstory and character. Â
10. Abandonment issues. So Piperâs mother literally leaves her before she was even born...and she didnât care? Itâs understandable that she would accept her motherâs choice after finding out that her mother was a goddess who couldnât stay with her, but what about before? She didnât even comment on it. She showed signs of abandonment issues (insecurity over her relationships, the inability to trust her partnerâs intentions, constant jealousy, difficulty with feeling actual intimacy, possessive and controlling behavior, clinginess, constant need for attention, etc.) but they were never expanded on or even called out. She was portrayed as the perfect one without any faults or need for help cause she was (in Riordanâs eyes) supposed to be the âstrong oneâ who didnât need others to help or save her, but that just led to a dull character and flat arc.Â
11. Standards of perfection. Piper is the daughter of a rich and famous movie star, is extremely attractive, etc., so writing her backstory as being constantly pressured, raised, and even demanded into always being poised, presentable, and perfect her whole life wouldâve been way better than whatever the hell Riordan was doing. Piper shouldâve rebelled against society, not her dad who didnât even do anything wrong. Basically- What Piper did: My dad wants to bring me to a nice salon cause he loves and cares about me? NO! Iâm going to cut my own hair even though cutting your hair in First Nations culture is literally taboo without even bothering to tell my dad that I donât want to get a haircut to see if heâll agree! What Piper shouldâve done: Society wants me to always be perfect and presentable? NO! Iâll show them that Iâll be whatever I want to be without their input!
12. Rich and famous â a perfect life. People are often mistaken that rich and famous people have the best, perfect life, but they donât. With societyâs impossible standards, controversy in the fame department, tons of hate for a bunch of different reasons, and more, Piper couldâve been the one to show that more money doesnât equal more happiness, cause who in the world would constantly want flashing cameras in their faces, the inability to go out without being followed and/or harassed, fake friends, constant judging, the inability to have any privacy or being able to do anything normal people can, etc.?Â
So, yeah. Piperâs backstory was just a steaming-hot mess, a pile of wasted potential, and flat-out bad writing. Riordan couldâve written an awesome character with a great character development, but it was trashed only because he couldnât focus on the right aspects of her backstory.Â

James Maxwell TV/Film List
More of a guide than a recs list, because old tv/film depends so much on availability. Itâs also hard as thereâs nothing surviving thatâs really like SotT for him (his voice is always slightly different, too & rarely the grand one from SotT) - I found it hard to find where to start back in the day, so I hope this makes it easier. However, I have starred my favourites (rated for JM content only).Â
Iâve divided things into categories and @jurijurijuriousâ (or anyone) can make up their own mind as to what to go for. (Also @jurijurijurious I have NO idea what old telly youâve already seen, so forgive me if Iâm telling you things you already know.)
Where to find it: Luckily in the UK, itâs not too bad! Network Distributing are the DVD supplier to keep an eye on (they do great online sales), you can find secondhand things cheap on Amazon Marketplace & eBay, and several Freeview channels show old TV & film, especially Talking Pictures. Iâll note if things are on YT or Daily Motion, but they come and go all the time, so itâs always worth searching.
***
Film serials (ITC mainly)
British TV made on film in the US mode with transatlantic cash, so generally pretty light, episodic (continuity is almost unheard of) etc. Some turn up on ITV3 & 4 on a regular basis (colour eps).Â
*** Dangerman âA Date With Dorisâ (ITC 1964) James Maxwell is a British spy friend of Drakeâs (Patrick MacGoohan) called Peter who gets framed for murder. Drake goes to Fake Cuba to rescue him by which time JM is dying from an infected wound and faints off every available surface, including the roof. Itâs great. On YT. (The boxset is v pricey if you just want 2 eps.)
âFair Exchangeâ (ITC 1964) JM is a German spy friend of Drakeâs called Pieter who helps him out on a case. Not as gloriously hurt/comfort-y as the other, but it does have some excellent undercover dusting. (Why Patrick MacGoohan has JM clones all called variations on Peter dotted around the globeis a mystery.) On YT.
The Saint âThe Inescapable Wordâ (ITC 1965) This is pretty terrible, but entertaining and James Maxwell plays the worldâs most hopeless former-cop-turned-security guard. With bonus collapsing. On YT.
âThe Art Collectorsâ (1967). JM is the villain of the week. It does include a v funny bit, though, where the Saint (Roger Moore) goes for JMâs fake hair (and who can blame him? How often I have felt the same!) This oneâs in colour so should pop up on ITV3 or 4.Â
The Champions âThe Silent Enemyâ (ITC 1968). Surprisingly good JM content as the villain of the week who drugs sailors and steals their clothes before realising that maybe he should have worked out if he could operate a sub before he stole it.
The Protectors âThe Bridgeâ (ITC 1974, 30 mins.)Â Not worth seeking out on its own, but ITV4 seems fond of it and James Maxwell gets to do some angsting and wears purple, so itâs worth snagging if you can, but too slight otherwise.
*** Thriller âGood Salary, Prospects, Free Coffinâ (ITC 1975; 1hr 10mins, I think). James Maxwell moves in with Julian Glover and runs an overcomplicated murdery spy ring where they bicker a lot in between killing girls by advertisement and burying them in the back garden. What could possibly go wrong?? Anyway, itâs solid gold cheese, has bonus Julian Glover and a lot of natty knitwear. What more does an old telly fan want? (tw: Keith Barron being inexplicably the very meanest Thriller boyfriend.) On YT but tends to get taken down fast.
***
Films
Design for Loving (1962; comedy). Can be rented from the BFI online for ÂŁ3.50. Isnât that great or that bad (or that funny either), but does have JM as a dim layabout beatnik, which is atypical.
***The Traitors (1962). This is a low-key little 1hr long spy B-movie, but itâs also thoughtful and ambiguous with a nice 60s soundtrack and location work (itâs a bit New Wave-ish) and the central duo of JM and Patrick Allen are sweet and it all winds up with James Maxwell going in the swimming pool. One of the things where JM is actually American. (Talking Pictures show this occasionally & it is out on DVD as an extra on The Wind of Change.) The quality of the surviving film is not great, though.
***Girl on Approval (1962). A Rachel Roberts kitchen sink drama about a couple fostering a difficult teenager. Itâs dated, but itâs also really interesting for a 1950s/60s slice of life (and very female-centric) & probably the only time on this list JM played an ordinary person.
***Otley (1969). Comedy thatâs generally dated surprisingly well & is good fun, starring Tom Courtenay +cameos from what seems like the whole of British TV. JM is an incompetent red herring & there are more cardies and glasses as well as a random barometer.Â
Old Vic/Royal Exchange group productions
(Surviving works made by the group that JM was involved in from drama school to his death, made by Michael Elliott or Casper Wrede. I like them a lot mostly, but they are all slow and weird and earnest & not everybodyâs cup of tea.)
Brand (BBC 1959). The BBC recording of the 59 Companyâs (the name they were then using) landmark production, starring Patrick MacGoohan. This was a big deal in British theatre & launched the careers of everybody involved. Itâs very relentless and weird but interesting & Iâm glad they decided it was important enough to save. First fake beard alert of this post. It wonât be the last. On YT & there is a DVD, which is sometimes affordable and sometimes ÂŁ500, depending on the time of day.
***Private Potter (1962). The original TV play is lost and this film has an extraneous storyline, but otherwise has most of the TV cast & gives a pretty good idea of why as a claustrophobic talky TV piece it made such an impact. Tom Courtenay is Private Potter, a soldier who claims to have had a vision of God during a mission & James Maxwell his CO who needs to decide what to do about this strange excuse for disobeying orders. Tw: fake eyebrows (!) and moustaches. Only available on YT.
[???]One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovitch (1970). Again, no DVD release (no idea why), but it is on YT. I havenât seen this yet, but itâs another Casper Wrede effort starring Tom Courtenay and apparently JM is especially good in it. (Iâm just not good at watching long things on YT and keep hoping for a DVD or TV showing.)
Ransom (1974). A more commercial effort starring Sean Connery & Ian McShane; it gets slated as not being a good action movie, but is clearly meant to be more thinky and political with the edge of a thriller. JMâs part isnât large but Casper Wrede shoots his friend beautifully, & itâs a pretty decent film with nice cinematography, shot in Norway, as was One Day. I liked it.
[I think this post might be the longest in the world, whoops. Sorry!]
Cardboard TV (the best bit, obv)
One-off plays etc./mini-series
Out of the Unknown âThe Dead Planetâ Adaptation of an Asimov short story; this is very good for JM, but hard to get hold of unless you want the boxset. I think someone has some of the eps on Daily Motion. (His other OotU ep is sadly burninated.)
The Portrait of a Lady (BBC 1968). Adaptation of the novel; JM is Gilbert Osmond, so it is great for JM in quantity and his performance, but depends how you feel about him being skeevy in truly appalling facial hair. Do the bow ties and hand-holding make up for it? but heâs in 5 whole episodes, and Suzanne Neve, faced with Richard Chamberlain, Edward Fox, and Ed Bishop as suitors, chooses instead to marry the worst possible James Maxwell. Relatable. XD
***Dracula (ITV 1968, part of Mystery & Imagination). JM is Dr Seward, fainty snowflake of vampire hunters, who falls over, sobs and canât cope for most of the 1 hr 20 mins. More facial hair, but not as offensive as last time. Suzanne Neve is back again, although now JM is nice, sheâs married Corin Redgrave, whoâs more into Denholm Elliott. Anyway, I love this so much because it turned out that I love Dracula as well as shaky old TV with people I like in getting to fight vampires and all be shippy. Good news - TP keep showing M&I, the DVD is out, and there are two versions of it up on YT.
The Prison (Armchair Cinema 1974). This is the one with Lincoln in it, but itâs not that great & JM isnât in it that much, so depends how curious you are for the modern AU! (But my Euston films allergy is worse than my ITC allergy, and I watched this when very unwell, so I may have been unfair.)
Crown Court âFitton vs. Puseyâ (1973) - part of the Crown Court series, set in a town full of clones who all keep returning to court. JM is on trial for his behaviour in (the Korean war? I forget?) although he ought to be on trial for his terrible moustache. Itâs not that great, but it is nice JM content. He probably did it, but for reasons, and he wibbles & panics whenever his wife leaves the courtroom. Also on YT.
*** Raffles âThe Amateur Cracksmanâ (ITV 1975) - He is Inspector Mckenzie in the Raffles pilot & is a lot of fun. At one point when there was a Raffles fandom someone in it claimed he was too gay for Raffles, which Iâm still laughing about, because Raffles. Anyway, watch out if you try to get the DVD because it is NOT included in S1, whatever lies Amazon tells. It is up somewhere online, though, I think.
Bognor âUnbecoming Habitsâ (1981). Some down marks for possibly the worst 80s theme & incidiental music ever, but fun & has been shown on Talking Pictures lately. JM is an Abbot running a honey-making friary that is actually a hotbed of spies, murder, gay sex and squash playing. This is the point at which he chooses to strip off on screen for the first time, because strong squash-playing abbots do that kind of thing apparently.
Guest of the week in ongoing series/serials
Since even series with a lot of continuity tended to write episodes as self-contained plays (like SotT), these are usually accessible on their own.
Manhunt âDeath Wishâ (1970). This is one of the most serialised shows here, but this episode is still fairly contained. WWII drama about three Resistance agents on the run across France. JM is... a Nazi agent & former academic trying to break an old friend (one of the seriesâ three leads, Peter Barkworth) with kindness, possibly?? (Manhunt is very angry and psychological & dark and obv. comes with major WWII warnings (& more if you want to try the whole thing), but itâs also v good.) Up on YT, I think.
Doomwatch âThe Iron Doctorâ (BBC S2 1971). âDoomwatchâ is the nickname of a govât dept led by Dr Spencer Quist that investigates new scientific projects for abuse/corruption/things that might cause fish to make men infertile etc. etc. JM is a surgeon who comes to their attention because heâs a bit too in love with his computer for the comfort of one of his more junior colleagues. (I think itâs perfectly comprehensible & a nice guest turn, but it is hard to get hold of outside of the series DVD. Which, being a cult TV person, I loved a lot anyway, but YMMV!)
***Hadleigh âThe Caperâ (S3 1973). Hadleigh is a very middle of the road show, but watchable enough (lead is Gerald Harper, whoâs always entertaining) and this is pretty self-contained as it centres around an old con-man friend (JM) of Hadleighâs manservant causing trouble by pretending to be Gerald Harper, for reasons. JM seems to be having a ball.
Justice 2 episodes, S3 1974. He guests twice as an opposing barrister & gets to be part of some nice showdown court scenes. Again, a middle of the road drama, but stars Margaret Lockwood, who was still just as awesome in the 1970s as she was in the 1930s & 40s. On YT.
Father Brown âThe Curse of the Golden Crossâ (1974). JM is an American archaeologist getting death threats; stars Kenneth More as Father Brown. Just a note, though, that 1970s TV adaptations tended to be really really faithful and this is one of the stories where Chesterton comes out with an anti-semitic moment... (JM was unconscious for that bit and, frankly, I envied him.) But otherwise lots of angsting in yet another fake moustache about someone trying to kill him.
The Hanged Man âThe Bridge Makerâ (1975). Confession time, I have v little idea what this one was about apart from Ray Smith being an unlikely Eastern European dictator, as this whole series went over my head and was not really my thing. (Ask @mariocki theyâre cleverer than me and liked it & can probably explain the plot!) I donât know if itâs available anywhere off the DVD but on a JM scale it was v good/different as he was a coldly villainous head of security & it wouldnât be too bad to watch alone, but there was an overarching plot going on somewhere.
Doctor Who âUnderworldâ (1978). This is famously one of the worst serials in the whole of classic Who, but largely because of behind-the-scenes circumstances, not the guest cast. There is some nice stuff, though, esp in Ep1 (JM is a near-immortal alien whoâd like to lay down and die but still the Quest is the Quest as they say... a lot) & itâs bound to pop up on YT or Daily Motion. The DVD has extras that include v v brief bits of JM speaking in his actual real accent (which he otherwise does in NONE of these) & making jokes in character. Honestly, though, this is the only DW where the behind-the-scenes doc is genuinely the most exciting bit as they desperately invented whole new technologies & methods of working to bring us this serial, and then everybody wished they hadnât.
*** Enemy at the Door âTreasonâ (LWT 1978). This is a weird episode but I love it lots - from a (v v good) series about the occupation of the Channel Islands. (So obv warnings for WWII & Nazis.) JM is a visiting German Generalmajor, but heâs come for a very unusual reason - to ask for help from his brother-in-law, a blackballed British army officer (Joss Ackland). Itâs all weird and low key and JM is doomed and nevertheless probably my favourite thing of his that isnât SotT.
* The Racing Game 2 eps (1979). Adaptation of Dick Francisâs first Sid Halley novel Odds Against (ep1) + 5 original stories for the series. This is an interesting one - JM plays Sidâs father-in-law & they have a lovely relationship thatâs central to the book BUT Dick Francis loved this adaptation and Mike Gwilym who played Sid and was inspired to write a sequel Whip Hand, which he tied in with TV canon - and adopted at least three of the cast, including JM. Which means that all the Sid & Charles fanfic is also JM fic by default and itâs quite impressive. (Thereâs not much but itâs GOOD.) On YT.
Bergerac âTreasure Huntâ (1981). Not a major role, but pretty nice & itâs one a Christmas ep of the detective show (also set on the Channel Islands) that involved Liza Goddardâs cat burglar, which was always the best bit of Bergerac.
His guest spots in Rumpole of the Bailey (1991) âRumpole a la Carteâ and Dr Finlay (1994) are both really just cameos, but both series come round on Freeview; the Rumpole one is funny and the Dr Finlay one his last screen appearance before his death the following year.
Not worth getting just for JM: Subway in the Sky; Bill Brand and Oppenheimer.
These films only have cameos but some quite fun ones and they come around on terrestrial TV: The Damned (1962), The Evil of Frankenstein (1964) & (more briefly) Far From the Madding Crowd (1967). (I think his cameo in Connecting Doors must be at least recognisable as someone spotted him in it just based off my gifs, but itâs not come my way yet.) Iâve never been able to get hold of any of his radio performances, not even the 1990s one.
ETA: I forgot The Power Game! This is the one surviving series where he occurs as a semi-regular (at least until halfway through S1 when he went off to the BBC to be in the now-burninated Hunchback of Notre Dame). This isnât standalone, but itâs a good series and it is on YT. See how you go with crackly old TV before you brave it but itâs the snarkiest thing ever made about people making concrete and stabbing each other in the back. JM is a civil servant who tries to run the National Export Board and is plagued by Patrick Wymark and Clifford Evans as warring businessmen.
***
[... Well, now I just feel scary. 0_o In my defence, I have been stuck home bored & ill for years, and often unable to watch modern TV while trying to cheer myself up with James Maxwell, so I didnât watch all of this at once. It just... happened eventually after SotT. /waves handÂ
But if anyone feels the need to unfriend my quietly at this point, I understand. /o\]

Chapter 5 - Conflicting Directives
Part 5/17Â of What it Means to be Human
Word Count:Â 10,488
Warnings: Swearing (not as much this time), mild suggestive banter, character death, post-loss grieving, descriptions of a car accident and hospitalization.
Genre: Self-insert/Hurt/Comfort/Fluff
Pairing: OC (Detective Rachel) X Connor
Rating: Mature
Summary: The day is done and Detective Rachel has gone home. Connor, making earnest on his promise, arrives at her home to make amends. He learns the extent of her loss and trauma and notices strange things about her affect on him. It seemed as though without doing anything, Connorâs software instability increases almost continuously around her, but even more strangely, heâs not bothered by it.
First Chapter | Previous Chapter
---------------------------------
Date: November 6th, 2038Â Time: 06:34 PM Objective: Find Amanda
Within his mind palaceâs zen garden, the RK800 android found himself in once again, prepared to make another report to Amanda, his handler. It was a familiar and peaceful place, with many modern-style bridges that led to the centre of the small lake within.
But first and foremost, the strange device to his left that he always triggered, but never understood why. He was strangely drawn not only to it, but to trigger it. It was like a console with an input for handprint recognition just in front of a circular sculpture-like structure.
He never understood why he triggered it, or why whenever he did, he could feel something constantly shifting. He simply felt compelled to do so.
But nevertheless, he did what he always did, and made his way to the centre, where his trusted handler typically was. The detective android saw her as his mentor, and admitted that there was much he would do for her approval.
Amanda - Trusted He found her standing beneath the tree in the centre, her very dark skin reflected by the bright sun that lit the garden, and her braided hair done up in a tightly wound bun.Â
âHello, Amanda.â Connor greeted.
âConnor, I've been expecting you.â She greeted him in return. âWould you mind a little walk?âÂ
Connor, giving her a patient and appreciative smile, began following the elegant and poised coloured woman through the garden. âThat deviant seemed to be an intriguing case. A pity you didn't manage to capture it...âÂ
Rachel đ
Pragmatic
Explain
No Excuse
âThe detective Lieutenant Anderson brought on today nearly had it.â Connor explained. âIt managed to slip from her grasp, but Iâm certain that the next case will go much more successfully.â
Amanda continued to listen intently, stealing a glance at him from time to time. âDid you manage to learn anything?â She asked him patiently.
Deviant đ
Diary đ
Signs On Walls đ
Birds
âIt was fascinated by birds.â Connor answered, Rachelâs emphasis on the nature of the deviantâs connection to the pigeons the most prevalent in the androidâs consciousness. âWe've seen deviants interested in other lifeforms like insects or pets, but nothing like this.â
Amanda nodded. âWhat else?â
Deviant đ
Diary đ
Signs On Walls đ
âThe walls of the apartment were covered with drawings of labyrinths and other symbols.â Connor added, informing his handler of what he saw written and drawn on the walls of the abandoned apartment. âLike the other deviants, it seemed obsessed with rA9.â
âYou came very close to capturing that deviant...â Amanda pointed out. âHow is your relationship with the Lieutenant developing?â
Saving Hank đ
Negative
Ambiguous
Positive
âHe seemed grateful that I saved his life on the roof.â Connor answered earnestly, continuing to walk with the older woman. âHe didn't say anything, but he expressed it in his own way.â
âIt would seem that this case has become more complicated, thanks to the involvement of both Lieutenant Anderson and Detective Rachel.â She said slowly. âHaving to work with the lieutenant already made this case difficult enough, but the addition of another may compromise your investigation. What do you make of her?â
Indifferent
Sincere
Dismissive
Unsure
Amanda - Trusted v âI think her addition to the case would add great benefit to our progress.â Connor answered in earnest, much to Amandaâs subtle disappointed scowl, indicated only by the smallest twinge in her full lip and narrow of her dark eyes. âSheâs incredibly analytical, has a natural instinct for discerning the motives of suspects and a powerful drive. She also has a good rapport with the lieutenant and I consider her insight extremely valuable.â
Amandaâs facial expressions were almost impossible to read, as she most often kept her face entirely neutral. âYou know full well that she knowingly allowed the deviants from before to escape.â She pointed out. âWhat do you think about her attitude towards them?â
Intriguing
Disapproving
Unsure
Indifferent
Amanda - Trusted v âI find her observations intriguing.â Connor answered flatly. âShe draws many comparisons to other marginalized groups among humans, ones that I find rather fascinating and insightful. Sheâs very articulate and adamant in her thoughts regarding them.â
Amanda continued to stare at Connor, her expression stoic and unchanging. âIn any case, she has also been officially assigned to the case.â She reminded the android. âIf the cause of these outbreaks of deviancy isnât found, they will wreak havoc. Make certain she does not become a liability.â
Connor nodded. âI understand.â
âWe don't have much time.â Amandaâs eyes scanned the surroundings of the Zen Garden before settling on Connor again. âDeviancy continues to spread. It's only a matter of time before the media finds out about it.â She said, putting emphasis on the latter part of that statement. âWe need to stop this, whatever it takes.â
Connor nodded obediently. âI will solve this investigation, Amanda.â He promised her. âI won't disappoint you.â
Amanda nodded, coming to the end of their walk. âYouâd better hurry.â She warned. âI will inform you when we have another case. But until then, get on better terms with your new partner.â
--------
Objective: Make amends with Rachel Rachel - Warm
Leaving the self-driving taxi, Connor stepped up and approached the house. It wasnât a particularly large house, but it had two levels and a large window to the right side when approaching the front door. As the android approached the house, he stepped up to the door and was about to knock when he heard a sound coming from inside.
Knock
Investigate
Leaning over towards the window, he began examining what was playing inside. It was her, in what looked like a kitchen, smiling. Smiling, dancing, singing, and playing with a large black dog.Â
And I'm begging you, bring me back to life.Â
I just can't stand leaving you alone tonight.Â
It's too late to go.Â
Already taken me forever just to try to know.Â
Connor quickly matched the song and found it to be an old 2011 song called Stutter from the album Ever After by Marianaâs Trench. She wasnât dancing in any specific way, simply bouncing on her feet and moving her shoulders in rhythm with her eyes closed.Â
One for the money, two for the show,Â
three to get ready, and four to go.Â
For the life of me,Â
I don't know why it took me so long to see.
The way her hair bounced on her shoulders and the way her smile contorted to the lyrics of the song was utterly captivating. She was spontaneous, free, and entirely shameless in her sheer joy. It didnât even occur to him that he was already recording her so that he could commit this to detailed memory.
I just stutter, stutter, stutter,
Di-di-di-di-di-did I?
Stutter, stutter, stutter,
Di-di-di-di-di-di-did I?
Stutter, stutter, stutter,
Di-di-di-di-di-did I?
Stutter, stutter, stutter,
Di-di-di-di-di-di-did I?
Software Instability ^ Connor realized that he couldnât take his eyes off her as she was behaving wholly organically as she truly was. This was what she was like in her own time, when it was just herself in her own space. And he would be lying if it wasnât utterly captivating listening to her sing and watching her dance with such freeform careless abandon, throwing all caution to the wind to get completely lost in her own rhythm. She was making strange flapping motions with her hands and tapping and hitting the counter in various ways to the music which he couldnât help but find incredibly endearing.
But it didnât last, as she then locked eyes with him, her brown eyes wide in shock, very much resembling a deer caught in headlights. Not that Connor had ever seen that himself, but he was aware of the phenomenon. After all, there wasnât very much large wildlife in Detroit, at least not in the city.
She didnât seem to really be afraid as she sort of just stood there. Connor took that as a good enough reason to step back in front of the door and ring the doorbell.
Although, as soon as he had done that, the music stopped and the rumbles of a deep bark and a loud and boisterous laugh resounded through the house and were audible from where Connor was standing. It was unmistakably hers, but he had never heard her laugh like that. Not with so much energy and force behind it. It was surprising, and it made Connorâs lip twinge in the smallest smile. âWait!â She ordered, still laughing.Â
Software Instability ^ The barking had stopped and the front door was opened to Rachelâs face, still contorted in a wide open-mouthed smile as she was still keeling over in laughter, clutching her diaphragm with her right arm.
Greet
Apologize
Tease
Say Nothing
âHello, Rachel.â Connor announced curtly.
âIâm sorry,â the shorter woman said, adjusting her glasses and still trying to work through laughs and giggles, âbut did you just ring the doorbell to try and pretend like you totally werenât just staring at me through my window like a creep?â
Apologize
Tease
Say Nothing
Connor hesitated for a moment before answering. âIâm sorry, I didnât mean to disturb you.â He apologized, putting on his typical professional posture and persona. âItâs just that I hadnât seen you dance or sing before.â
âThatâs probably because it would be pretty tone-deaf to just break into song in the middle of a police precinct.â Rachel joked with him, before stepping back a bit, the large black dog stepping between them and sniffing at Connor eagerly.Â
Software Instability ^ âThatâs Bear, my sweet baby boy. He loves people, heâs an absolute sweetheart.â She cooed in that baby voice many humans used when speaking to or about animals they found cute. âYes he is! He absolutely is, the sweetest lilâ baby boy in the whole world and the cutest baby ever!â It was a tone of voice Connor couldnât help but once again smile at as she ruffled at the large dogâs ears, the dog huffing in pleasant excitement. The android quickly identified it as a Newfoundland. Theyâre dogs that were bred to work in water in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, but more specifically Newfoundland, in Maritime Canada, and often finds use as a canine lifeguard.Â
As Connor started petting the large black dog, who was sniffing eagerly at his face, Rachel then turned back to him, having calmed down and was looking at him with an inquisitive look. âWait, how did you find my house? I forgot to give you the address. Did Hank give it to you?â
Truth
Lie
âNo.â Connor replied. âHe simply told me that you were going to be busy before you arrived at home. I didnât think to ask him as I simply searched for it while I was leaving the precinct to depart towards your home.â
Software Instability ^ Rachel gave him a smirk that Connor now recognized as typical of her. âOh, so now youâre also a stalker.â It was a statement that made Connor wonder if he had offended her, but her demeanour and tone of voice seemed to indicate it was nothing more than friendly banter. As she continued further into the room, she then looked back at him, her thick brown eyebrows knitted together in mild bewilderment. âAre...you gonna...come in?â
âIâm sorry, I was waiting for you to give me permission to enter.â He replied politely.
âIâm the one who invited you to my house!â Rachel pointed out with a gesture of her hand and a confused tone to her naturally loud voice. âJust come in, you dork. Take your shoes off and make sure you donât let Bear out, he tends to chase shit into the street.â
Software Instability ^ He walked inside the house, making sure to close the door behind him, Bearâs tail wagging eagerly before he walked away to lay in what looked like a very comfortable den of blankets and pillows inside of his kennel, which was situated in the corner of the living room. âIâm just going to brew myself some tea.â Rachel called, going back towards the kitchen. âIâm assuming androids donât eat or drink âcause it would probably fuck up their systems, right?â
âCorrect.â Connor replied, as he began removing his work shoes with ease. âAndroids cannot process the organic materials that humans consume, as itâs not compatible with their biocomponents. Consumption of such materials would indeed damage an android. However, some androids that are designed to work in food can taste what they make so that itâs suitable for a humanâs needs. Their systems are specialized so that they can release the materials in the same way humans do.â
âAnd you, Iâm guessing?â Rachel asked, an eyebrow raised. âSince I had the both amusement and disgust of learning about your filthy mouth and where itâs been.â
Software Instability ^ âCorrect.â Connor answered. âDue to the nature of my analysis, Iâve also been built to release foreign materials.â
Rachel rolled her eyes. âAlright, so just tea for me, then.â She said, making her way into the kitchen. âGo ahead and have a seat. Make yourself at home.â
âThanks.â Connor said curtly as he scanned the room.
Wait for Rachel to return Investigate Rachelâs homeÂ
He noticed that the walls were painted in very warm colours, dark oranges and rich shades of brown. It was a well-lit space, only further accentuated and magnified by the choice of colours for the interior. The kitchen led to the living room which was the room most adjacent to the large window in front. Around the corner of the wall of the living room was the kitchen and dining room combination, the sliding glass door leading to the backyard to the left of the kitchen and behind the dining room. Against the leftmost wall of the dining room, Connor could see a box that typically contained thirium or other android parts, yet there was no evidence of any working android in the home. He knew she was capable of performing small repairs on androids, but it seemed odd to have android supplies without actually possessing one.
Potentially repairing androids from home?
Connor detected another room behind the kitchen to the left from where he was facing, and peering inside, he could see several musical instruments, including an upright piano, a guitar, a ukulele, and a saxophone.
Rachel has musical interests. đ
To the left of the entrance and just before the dining room were the stairs leading up to the second floor, where he assumed Rachelâs bedroom was. Below the stairs was another door, likely storage, and then another that could be walked through. Given the layout Connor was noticing thus far, he concluded it was simply another door leading to the room with the piano in it.
Peering past the hallway next to the stairs was a door at the end. Given the placement of the driveway outside the house, Connor deduced that the door led to the garage. And to the left of that was a washing machine and a dryer, as well as several cupboards and shelves for various cleaning supplies and solutions.
And to the very left of the entrance was a pair of closet sliding doors, of which could be very easily assumed was for jackets, shoes, and other outdoor wear.
Surrounding the house were several photos and other decorations of various animals, most commonly owls of various species.
Rachel has a special interest in ornithology, specifically Strigiformes. đ
Alongside the several photographs of owls, there were illustrations of dragons, ranging from the typical four-legged winged dragons most common in pop culture, to other types such as wyverns and even some feathered varieties.
Rachel has a particular fondness for dragons.
In the living room itself, There was a large couch and two matching recliners on either side, a long coffee table seated deliberately in the middle, a remote control situated on it.
In front of the coffee table against the wall was a fireplace, the mantle holding multiple pictures and other decorations. Above the mantle was a large television screen that was switched off. âIâm just gonna put some tunes on! Itâs way too quiet for me!â Connor heard Rachel call from the kitchen.

Say Nothing
âThatâs fine!â Connor replied. âI donât mind.â
The TV turned back on, a music sharing app on the screen as another album began playing. The display read The Saltwater Room, part of the 2008 album Maybe Iâm Dreaming by Owl City, also known as Adam Young.
Rachel likes 2000-2020 era music.
As Connor approached to investigate the fireplace mantle, he found several photographs and other items of interest. Lying on one side of the mantle was a photograph of Rachel, a much younger Rachel, with several animals ranging from a small Syrian Hamster, to a black English Cocker Spaniel, to a Crested Gecko. Beside them were more recent photographs, one of Rachel with what appeared to be a photo of Bear as a puppy, and one with a piebald Ball Python snake.
Rachel cares deeply for animals. đ
Next to those photos were others of family. Some were rather old and others were more recent. Connorâs searches turned up several family members.
Of her immediate family, her father and her maternal grandmother were both deceased. Her grandmother died in 2025 and her father died in 2029
Several deceased family members.
Connorâs eyes scanned over the other end of the mantle, several decorations on it. Between them were several photographs of Rachel in what appeared to be a custom tailored suit and a veil with another taller and much wider set bearded man wearing glasses, also in a suit. It was clear that this was a wedding. The largest photo in the centre, of the pair of them smiling at the photographer, each otherâs hands in the otherâs.
In front of the photographs were three sets of rings. The pair on the left side was a size 7 white gold ring with a mythic topaz cut into the shape of a heart next to a size 13 sterling silver ring, the ends made to resemble a semicolon.
The pair on the right was a set of matching black steel rings of the same sizes, the small one reading âHis Sallyâ and the larger one reading âHer Jack.â A search for media containing both the names Sally and Jack produced a stop-motion film from 1993 titled The Nightmare Before Christmas directed by Henry Selick and produced by Tim Burton.
And the pair in the middle was a pair of simple gold rings, of the same sizes. Simple bands, the surfaces engraved. The smaller one reading: âYou and I are one...â and the larger one reading: â...now and forever, until the end of time.â Upon closer inspection, a date was engraved on the underside of the rings. August 25th, 2026.
Software Instability ^ Rachel is married.
Connor then turned his attention to the large photos and examined the face of the man posing with Rachel.
He turned up records that her husband, Frank, had died in January 2031.
Rachel is grieving the loss of her husband. đ
Having gathered enough information, Connor took a seat over on the large couch in front of the coffee table, patiently waiting for Rachel to be done with her tea.
Wait for Rachel to return Investigate Rachelâs home
âSorry it took so long.â Rachel apologized before she entered the room, taking a seat on the couch, placing her mug on a nearby coaster on the coffee table. It was a grey mug with the star sign of Scorpio printed on it in white, labeled as such along with the dates Scorpio falls between. Upon analyzing the drink, it appeared to be a black tea blend made of cinnamon, ginger, cardamom, pink peppercorns, cloves, vanilla, and other natural flavouring.Â
Also in it was eggnog, likely added by Rachel to give it a more specific flavour and a more creamy texture. âItâs November, so gotta get that more cinnamony fall-flavoured tea. Itâs one of my favourite holiday teas, even though itâs a year long tea at Davidâs Tea where I get it. Saigon Chai is what itâs called. Not much of a fan of it by itself, but with eggnog, itâs fucking amazing. Just, uh, be careful how much eggnog you put in so that you donât just replace the taste of the tea with eggnog. Canât stand eggnog by itself either, itâs way too sweet for me.âÂ
Software Instability ^ She took a sip of it with a contented expression, her eyes closed in bliss as she lingered for a moment just to capture the scent of it. It almost made Connor wish that heâd been built with the ability to detect scents. âSo,â she started, making direct eye contact with Connor, her dark eyes intense and yet somehow gentle and patient, âseems like we have some things to clear up between us.â
Connor nodded. âCorrect.â He agreed. âBut first, I wanted to inform you that Captain Fowler has officially assigned you to the deviancy case alongside Lieutenant Anderson. So from today onward, weâre officially partners.â
Rachel blinked a couple times in surprise, nodding. âWow, finally a case fucking worth working on.â She sighed, taking another sip of her tea. âIâve been getting a lot of boring ones or ones that barely take any effort. So, this should definitely be interesting.â
âI certainly hope so.â Connor agreed, winking at Rachel, knowing and earnestly enjoying the brief spike in her heart rate and breath intake that the gesture elicited from her.
Apologize for behaviour Understand Rachelâs reasons
She placed her mug back on its coaster, taking another sigh, before returning her gaze to the android, boring into him. âAnd?â She pressed.
âAnd,â Connor repeated, formulating the proper thing to say in this instance, âI wanted to apologize for my recklessness earlier on the highway. I should have considered the distress it would have caused both you and Lieutenant Anderson to see my destruction. And I want you to know that I will take extra precaution to ensure my own safety from now on.â
Rachel nodded, giving Connor an appreciative smile. âThank you.â She muttered. âThat really means a lot to me.â
Apologize for behaviour
The air between them had grown tense, sparking like the hum of a power cable. Connor was contemplating the next best course of action from this point.

Other Models
Nothing
âIâm not certain how well this will lend to your understanding of my decisions,â Connor started, Rachel returning her focus on him, taking another sip of her tea, âbut I would like you to know this. When an RK800 model is destroyed, its memory is transferred to the next model. This is so that there is no slow in the investigation and so that it can continue without incident.â
âWell, I kinda figured that.â Rachel responded, much to Connorâs mild surprise. Or at least as close to surprise as he could get. âBut that doesnât matter. Just because you can upload your memories doesnât mean you donât die. It doesnât make you more expendable than me. It just means that someone else has your memories, but it isnât you.â
Her answers never seemed to fail to perplex and intrigue Connor. And despite knowing his focus should only be on his mission, he couldnât help but want to know what she had to say. Her insights and philosophies were fascinating to him. She was more like an android than most humans, but more like a human than deviants were, clearly. Though according to her, she didnât see much of a functional difference between the two.
And that, too, intrigued the RK800 android.
âWhyâs that?â Connor asked, wanting to know what her viewpoint was. âIf my memory is uploaded into another Connor model who exists to serve the same purpose, wouldnât we still effectively be the same?â
âItâs not like when you backup a computer and put that data on another.â Rachel replied. âFirst of all, I doubt itâs as flawless and perfectly done as that usually is. Some data would probably get lost, I bet. And second of all, watching someone die and then show up the next day as if nothing had happened is like seeing a ghost. Itâs alarming, unnerving, and it feels wrong and messes a lot with what you know is real and what isnât. And depending on the way you die, it can be even more traumatic than it would otherwise be, though Iâve never met someone who wasnât traumatized at the sight of someone elseâs death.â She took another sip of tea, her eyes blinking in a way that Connor figured was her recollecting her thoughts in order to stay on-track of them. âAnd...â
Connor raised an eyebrow at her pause. âAnd?â He echoed.
She let out a sigh, avoiding meeting Connorâs eyes. âAnd it wouldnât be you.â She finished. âIt would look like you, sound like you, and maybe even act like you. But it wouldnât be you. It wouldnât be the same Connor I had met and protected last night. Or the same Connor I was touring around the precinct. Or the same Connor I was having banter and sharing jokes with a few hours ago.â
Connor was even more confused. âWhy would that matter in regards to me?â
Software Instability ^ âBecause like it or not, I already care about you and even if I didnât, I still wouldnât want you to die.â Rachel said rather bluntly, her dark eyes half-lidded as she took another sip of tea. âForgive me, Iâm paraphrasing again, but...this morning, we were nothing to each other. I was just another human like thousands of others. And you were just an android like the thousands in circulation. You had no need of me, nor I of you. But it was with the short time spent today, learning about each other, spending the time together on the case, and making efforts to look after one another, that changed that. After that point, you were no longer just another android like the thousands of others. You were Connor, our Connor, wholly unique and special and different to all the others. And I was no longer just another human like the thousands of others. I was Rachel, the human whom you feel the need and responsibility to apologize to right now for upsetting because you clearly wanted to take responsibility. And the day we just had proved we have need of each other, because of that bond that was forged.â She went on, Connor listening intently and committing her articulate and verbose explanations to memory. âIf you died, and your memory was transferred to the next one, the Connor that was unique and special would still be dead. Because the Connor that would take your place wouldnât be the same Connor. Itâs not the same Connor that I put time and effort into establishing a connection with. So even if you can transfer your memories, you yourself are wholly unique and cannot be replaced or replicated. Sorry, thatâs how it is and I donât make the rules, so youâre not allowed to die.â
Connor nodded, a small smirk creasing his lips. âIn that case, I have no choice but to comply.â
Rachel squinted her eyes, a strained smirk stretched across her small, yet ample lips, as if she was trying to discern if he was being earnest or humourous. But giving a nonchalant shrug, she simply took another sip of tea.

âYou mentioned that you witnessed a death in a road accident before.â Connor said flatly. âAnd thatâs why when I returned to the alley, I noticed you were showing symptoms that corresponded to a trauma related panic attack, one of the most common forms of PTSD.â
Software Instability ^ Rachel nodded, her face drooping slightly. âYeah, I was having...a really bad mental breakdown.â She answered, biting her lip and casting her gaze downward.
âYou were triggered.â Connor stated. âThe sight of the deviants and then myself endangering ourselves on the highway brought you back to that incident. Thatâs why you were so upset with me when I returned. You were afraid you were going to be forced to relive that incident all over again. Am I correct?â
Rachel was quiet for a moment. âPartially.â She took a sip of her tea before answering. âIt was both that I didnât want to watch another person die in an accident and that I didnât want to relive that event. Both to have to see it happen again, and...to lose someone else I cared about in the same way again.â She swallowed, taking a deep breath, clutching onto her dark, striped, oversized sweater. âI lost someone very dear to me in a car accident. Someone I loved more than anything in the whole world. And I donât want to lose anyone else like that ever again.â
It grew quiet between them once again, Rachel taking another sip of her tea. This time, she was refusing to make eye contact with Connor.

âIt was Frank, wasnât it?â Connor asked, causing Rachelâs head to snap up to meet Connorâs eyes. âYour husband. Thatâs who died in that car accident seven years ago in January. You were married five years before that in August 2026 on the 25th.â
Software Instability ^ âMy spouse.â Rachel corrected, not aggressively, but firmly. She blinked a couple times, her brown eyes blinking away tears that had not yet formed. âBut, yes...they were the one that died in that accident.â
Connor changed Frankâs status as âspouseâ rather than âhusbandâ and changed their pronouns accordingly in his database.

âDo you feel comfortable enough talking to me about it?â Connor asked.
Rachel nodded. âYeah, Iâm fine.â She replied, wiping her eyes with her sleeve. âItâs actually kind of nice to be able to talk to someone else about it. Well, aside from Hank, but...youâve probably figured out that heâs not great at dealing with emotions. But, he knows, too.â Connor waited patiently for her to continue, his dark eyes fixed on her forlorn and sombre expression. She took another sip of her tea and cleared her throat.Â
âIt was a late night. I was off work, and I went to pick Frank up. They had just gotten off, and it started snowing while they were working, so I texted them to let them know I was going to pick them up. So while I was driving home, they were telling me about this family they saw visiting one of the patients, and they had a young boy with them. Now, weâd already talked about the possibility of having a family, and we agreed it was something we both wanted. But that night, they suddenly asked me if I wanted to have a kid. And it sort of caught me off-guard, but I didnât mind. So we talked for a little while on the way home, and...we decided to try for a baby.â Rachelâs voice wavered as she started to choke back tears. âI was so happy. Happy that I was going to be a mother. Happy that I was going to raise a child alongside the love of my life. And I was so excited to start that part of my life...and then I heard the sound of a truck, and then everything blacked out...â
Software Instability ^ Connor listened intently as Rachel recounted the painful memory, now failing to stop the tears from spilling down her face as she quietly sobbed into her sleeve, desperately wiping her eyes. Connor quickly took notice of a box of tissues on the coffee table and gently pulled out a couple of them and handed them to Rachel wordlessly.
She took them graciously, blinking away a few more tears as she brought one of the tissues to her nose and blew, a loud moist noise muffled by the tissue. She did this a few times before she crumpled the used tissue and threw it in a nearby garbage bin that was placed on the side of the fireplace on the opposite end to Bearâs kennel. âThank you.â She squeaked, wiping her eyes and face with the second tissue before throwing that into the bin as well. âI blacked out...â She continued. âAnd when I came to, I could hear and see sirens everywhere. I felt like there was sand and pebbles under my skin across my whole body. There was so much pain everywhere except my left arm. My left arm was in so much pain it was numb. When I looked around, I realized that the car was upside down and that Frank was nowhere to be found. I also realized that the sand in my skin was road burn and shards of glass that were embedded in my skin in so many places. I tried desperately to find Frank, calling out to them, crawling out of the car to try and find them. And when I did, I crawled my way over to them. I got them to wake up and focus on me, but...âÂ
Software Instability ^ She choked back another set of tears, prompting Connor to once again provide her with tissues, this time opting instead to just give her the whole box to hold onto. âIt was too late for them...I begged them to stay with me...I tried to get them to stay, but I could see the light leaving their eyes...and they died in my arms.â Rachel had now effectively broken down into several broken and loud sobs, crying into and blowing her nose into several tissues. âThe last thing I remember was screaming at the paramedics not to take me away from Frank...as they were pulling me, dragging me kicking and screaming...before they put me under...and I woke up in the hospital.â
Connor was quiet for a moment. There was a strange sensation in his systems, like the creaking of machinery, in his lower abdomen between his chest and where his gut would be if he had organs. Though he could also feel his chest tightening, which wasnât normal for androids. Yet, just to be certain, he ran a diagnostics check on himself and all systems were fully functional. As the android looked into Rachelâs pained, damp, strained eyes, he was deciding what to do.

Rachel - Warm ^ Â âIâm sorry.â He said, gently and patiently. His voice was barely a whisper, but Rachel caught it as she glanced at him. âIt wasnât your fault, and I hope you know that.â
âI know...â Rachel said, wiping her eyes and blowing her nose again. âAnd I know they wouldnât want me to feel that way. But...I canât help it. Thereâs that horrible part deep in me that thinks of what I couldâve done to prevent it.â She let out a long sigh, her sobs beginning to subside. âAnd do you wanna know what the worst part is?â
Connor nodded.
Rachel sighed, grabbing her tea and taking another sip. âWhen I was in the hospital, it felt like time had stopped.â She confessed. âI was just in the bed in pain and not able to really move. It was just the same thing every day while the whole thing played over and over in my head. But thatâs not the worst part...no. The worst part was when I was finally cleared to go back home from the hospital. My sister heard what happened and she picked me up, taking me home. It was early in the morning, and I expected to see Frank at home, with breakfast prepared ready to go to work...but then I remembered the accident. But for most of the day, I felt numb...like I was completely dead inside. I barely even talked to Bianca. It was one of the most painfully quiet days in my life. And then when I was looking at the clock, I realized it was about the time that Frank usually came home from work. And for the briefest of moments, I felt something. My heart jumped, and I was so ready to jump into their arms and tell them about everything that happened...but then I remembered...and thatâs when it really sunk in.â Rachelâs eyes began spilling tears again. âFrank wasnât going to be waiting for me to come home anymore. And they werenât going to be coming home to me either...Frank...was gone. I was never going to come home to them ever again. And they were never going to come home to me. Thatâs when it sunk in...that I was never going to see them again...that our family we were so happy to start...was never going to happen...and I felt my heart die...âÂ
Software Instability ^ The woman slumped over and pulled her hood over her head, hiding her face from the android, her quiet weeps muffled as she pulled herself in tighter around herself. âI just broke down in Biancaâs arms...â Rachel croaked. âI couldnât handle it...and I donât think Iâve ever been more grateful not to be alone...it was horrible, Connor.â
Connor was about to say something before Rachel suddenly slumped hard into him, curled up against his leg. Unsure of what to do with the unexpected contact, he simply rested his left arm on her back. âIâm sorry.â Was all he could really say to console her. âI canât imagine what itâs like to go through something like that, Rachel.â He looked down at her, as she peaked through her hood up at the android, her broken spirit behind her eyes palpable. âIâll put in the utmost effort to ensure you donât have to experience that again.â
Rachel nodded, wiping her eyes and reaching for the tissues again, sitting up and straightening herself out. After she blew her nose and wiped her eyes, she threw more tissues into the garbage bin, taking several deep breaths. âLosing Frank has been the hardest thing thatâs ever happened to me.â She said, beginning to regain her composure. She pulled her sweater closer to herself. âThis used to be theirs.â She pointed out. âItâs one of the few things I have left to remember them by.
Connor nodded, breaking eye contact with Rachel and instead looking down at his hands.

âThis may just be a...plastic copâs opinon.â Connor said, the light in Rachelâs eyes returning. âBut I think if they knew what you were doing and that despite how difficult itâs undoubtedly been to continue without them, that you were still continuing to live, they would be proud of you.â
Rachel - Friend ^ Rachel nodded, her breath steadying. âYeah...I think youâre right.â She said, looking over at Connor who was now meeting her eyes again. âThey would be proud of me. And they would love me no matter what and theyâd want me to keep going no matter what life throws at me. It was...one of the things they admired most about me.â
Software Instability ^ Before Connor could say anything else, Rachel collapsed into the androidâs arms, pressing her face into his chest. âThank you...for listening to me.â She whispered.
Connor sat there for a moment, feeling that tightness in his chest again as he slowly enclosed his arms around her, in what he had hoped was an acceptable comforting gesture. âOf course.â He responded in kind.
Understand Rachelâs reasons
Suddenly, Rachel began shifting as she pulled back to look up at Connor, her eyes beginning to dry and her breathing becoming less damp and sniffly. âIs...is your thirium pump supposed to be beating that fast?â
Software Instability ^ Connor wasnât certain how to answer that, as he hadnât even noticed the speed of his working pump until Rachel brought it up. He was also mildly shocked that in her painful moment, she was distracted by concern for him. But running another diagnostics check revealed no issues and that all systems were fully operational once more.
Something that only served to confuse the android even more.
âNot typically.â Connor answered in earnest. âBut Iâm not detecting any faults in my hardware.â
âHuh.â Rachel said, wiping her eyes again. âWeird.â
Software Instability ^Â Suddenly her attention was then focused on a large black mass of fur, her face twisting into a soft and tender smile as she started ruffling Bearâs large fluffy head. âI know, I need to take you out to go poop, right?â The large Newfoundland barked a loud and rumbling bark as he lifted himself on his hind legs to stand on Rachelâs lap. âOkay, oh Jesus. Okay, weâll go.â She strained, picking up the dogâs paws and placing him back on the ground, getting up off the couch herself. âOkay, Iâll go take Bear out to go poop, but Iâll be right back.â She informed Connor.
The android nodded. âIâll wait until you come back.â He replied.
Objective complete
As the dog gathered excitedly around the door, letting out the occasional bark at Rachel as she attached a harness onto the large black dog, Connor couldnât help but stare at her as she went out the door onto the front lawn. About five minutes passed until she had returned, a bag of organic material in her hand that she quickly disposed into the garbage bin beside the front door. âAlright, there you go baby.â She said, taking her shoes off and removing Bearâs harness. âOkay, go play!â
As the dog scampered to find one of the various dog toys scattered in the house, Connor began calculating his next course of action. For a moment, he pondered as to whether or not he should go. After all, he did what he wanted to do. His objective here was complete. âAlright, I think Iâve taken up enough of your time, Rachel.â Connor said as he got up from the couch and straightened his tie. âI should be off.â
Rachel then snapped her head in his direction, surprise on her face. âWait...youâre leaving already?â
Software Instability ^ The disappointment in her voice was rather palpable, and Connor couldnât help but want to comply. âI have accomplished my objective.â He said flatly. âI no longer have any reason to be here. Unless thereâs anything else you need?â
âWell, no.â She said, walking up to him, her arms folded. âBut Iâd like you to stay. Besides, where are you even planning to go? Were you going to just follow Hank home?â
Connor nodded. âI was going to try meeting with the lieutenant, yes.â
Rachel sort of scoffed at him. âAnd, what would you have done if you couldnât do that? Where would you even go? I doubt you have your own house, or anything.â
Androids didnât need such accommodations as a house in the same way humans did. But his only plans were going to go to CyberLife for manual tune-ups and maintenance.
Software Instability ^ But for some strange reason, there was a hesitance in Connor. As if he didnât actually want to go to CyberLife. For some strange reason, he felt a strange visceral inclination to avoid physically going to meet them.
An inclination that didnât seem to have any sort of real rhyme or reason, which only served to concern Connor.
âI was actually thinking we could hang out for a bit.â Rachel suggested, looking up at him with pleading eyes, adjusting her glasses. âJust us two. Spend some time together until we get another break in the case.â
Connor tilted his head at her questioningly.

Insist
âYou are aware that I was not designed to be a companion android.â Connor explained. âWhile I have been designed to have far more advanced social protocol programs than other androids, my purpose is to assist police investigators and nothing more.â
âIâm aware of all of that, Connor.â Rachel said, rolling her eyes. âThatâs not why I want to hang out with you. I wanna hang out with you both because weâre partners now and also friends.âÂ
Software Instability ^ Friends. The word felt so foreign to the android to be described of himself. Yet, it felt...appropriate to describe their relationship as such. âWhen youâre friends, you donât really need a reason to spend time.â Rachel continued. âYou just spend time together because you want to. Because you enjoy each otherâs company and enjoy being around that person. Thatâs what it means to be friends. Or one of the many things that make friendships meaningful.â Connor couldnât help the small twinge of...something rather strange in him that he couldnât identify. The feeling of being valued so much by someone, not because of his ability to be a detective or his being an android. But because of his character. Because Rachel simply enjoyed his company. âSo, will you stay?â
He had no reason to placate her. This had nothing to do with his mission and nothing to do with the deviants. His only objective coming here was to apologize and make amends with the human detective so they could have a better working relationship, and he had indeed accomplished his objective.
So why did he feel the strong inclination to stay?
[Stay]
[Leave]
Software Instability ^ Connor gave her a smile. âI suppose it wouldnât be fair to refuse.â He said, taking a seat back on the couch.Â
Objective: Spend time with Rachel
He had now become more aware of the speed his thirium pump was working, and at the sight of Rachelâs enthusiastic smile, it only increased further. Another diagnostics check turned up nothing at fault in his systems, which further perplexed him. He then glanced over at her tea, detecting that it had gone cold. âYou should probably heat your tea again.â
Rachel shrugged as she took a seat. âOh, donât worry too much about that.â She said with a casual wave, taking another sip. ïżœïżœI donât mind it when my tea gets cold. The warmth is more for comfort, but Iâve noticed that the flavour is a lot stronger when it gets cold.â
Connor nodded. âAh, I see.â The moment was quiet as the music continued on the television.

Let her decide
âIâve noticed you have a room adjacent to the dining room with musical instruments.â Connor pointed out, gesturing to the door. âGiven that you were singing just earlier, I gather it would be fair to assume you have musical interests.â
Rachel - Friend ^ âOh, yeah. Definitely.â Rachel said, looking away with a small blush in her capillaries. âHonestly, if the music industry wasnât so sketchy and seedy, I wouldâve gone into it. But I practice a lot on the side whenever I feel like it.â She then got up. âDo you want to see?â
Connor got up. âSure.â
The woman lifted herself off the couch, gripping her mug of now cold tea and Connor followed, the android allowing her to lead him to the room.
Following closely, he was now able to get a better view of the room. The room was painted red, with a yellow wall on one side and an orange wall adjacent to it. Connor was able to investigate this room further, particularly the instruments. On the wall was a guitar, smaller than many, but given that Rachel was shorter than average and appeared to have smaller hands, it made sense. Right beside it was a ukulele, a rounder oval shape of the base with a printed pattern on it that made it appear like a pineapple. Another hanging off the wall was an alto saxophone.
Next to them was a bookshelf lined with music sheets, books, and others. Many of them appeared to be years old and filled with several pieces from the classic to the contemporary.
On the shelf were other smaller instruments, such as two clay ocarinas of different types and a kalimba.
There were two other instruments that appeared to be well-kept, but unused. A hurdy gurdy and a banjo.
And on the wall facing the kitchen entrance to the room was an upright piano that was in fairly decent condition. It was clearly one of the more played instruments in the room, the others being the ukulele and the guitar.
âItâs nice, isnât it?â Rachel asked, leaning against the piano. âItâs not the fanciest piano, but it doesnât need to be. A well-kept piano sounds just the same as any other and Iâve always wanted an authentic one. I grew up playing an electric keyboard, and I wanted an acoustic piano. Thereâs just something about the weight of the keys and the way the sound reverberates around a room that electric keyboards just canât compare to.â She took a seat on the piano bench, her form outlined by the light filtering in through the window. The sun was going down, and the warm light made the room glow a much deeper colour.
Whoever designed the house had a real talent for interior design.
âAnd you play all of these instruments?â Connor asked, still standing in the room.
âNot all of them.â Rachel replied, gesturing towards the banjo and hurdy gurdy. âThose were Frankâs.â She clarified. âThat banjo was actually their fatherâs. The one good thing that actually came out of that bastard. But the nice thing after we got married was that Frank never had to see that piece of shit ever again. Now, Frank wasnât exactly the most artistic person, and they didnât really have much of a sense of rhythm or was all that musically gifted. But they loved how the banjo sounded, and knowing that their father had one he never played sparked their interest in learning. And they did learn. And after putting in the effort and time to learn, they got pretty damn good at it.â She then gestured to the hurdy gurdy. âAnd that was their very favourite instrument. Which only made them more determined to learn how to play it.â
Connor went still. âOh.â He then turned around to look at the other instruments. âAnd the others?â
âAll mine.â Rachel replied. âI practice whenever I feel like it.â
Connor scanned over all of them once again and then returned his dark chocolate gaze onto Rachel. He couldnât help but want to hear her play something, the memory he recorded of her singing at the forefront of his mind.
Piano
Guitar
Ukulele
âIâm curious to listen to you play the guitar.â Connor said, taking a seat next to Rachel, leaning forward into his lap, his hands folded neatly. âThereâs something captivating about the vibrations of the steel strings of a guitar as itâs strummed or picked.â
Rachel scoffed at him. âI thought you said, and I quote, âI donât really listen to music, as such.ââ She teased, doing what sounded like an imitation of Connorâs voice, giving him a cheeky smirk coupled with a confidently raised eyebrow.
âBut Iâd like to.â Connor finished, returning her smirk.
She looked away from him quickly as she got up to reach for the guitar. For a moment, she seemed to be too short to reach it, but had clearly done it enough times to know how to do it without damaging the instrument. In fact, from what Connor could tell, Rachel took very good care of her instruments.
The sounds of unzipping could be heard as Rachel had undone her sweater and shucked it off her shoulders, placing it on a nearby chair and revealing her form.Â
Software Instability ^ She had rather broad shoulders for her petite figure, which were further accentuated by the black t-shirt she was wearing. Her short, brown, wavy hair rested effortlessly against her neck, just barely short of her shoulders. Even the way her rich dark locks framed her face was far more noticeable now that she had taken off the sweater, which was evidently twice her size in width and a head taller than her. Connor couldnât help but notice how the evening light accentuated her curves. She was by no means a thin woman, her abdomen appearing round and soft and her hips wide and quite evident. Her chest, once disguised easily by her sweater, was now quite noticeable, though Connor knew it wouldnât be appropriate to stare. It was considered rude. He then finally noticed her arms and legs. Toned, but not all that muscular. Built for speed and bursts of energy and activity, but not necessarily endurance or great feats of strength.
Connor didnât really have much of a reference or understanding of what it meant or felt like to find something or someone beautiful, or even aesthetically pleasing. But he felt that if there was any feasible way to describe Rachel physically, âbeautifulâ would be accurate.
âHey, you good?â Rachel said, an inquisitive look in her dark eyes, snapping Connor out of his focus. âI didnât think androids could get distracted.â
âNot typically.â Connor replied. âBut their objectives can be overwritten if something else has taken more immediate attention. It happens when analyzing multiple aspects of a given location.â
Rachel scoffed with a roll of her eyes and sat back down next to Connor. She began plucking the strings, listening intently as she adjusted the tuning keys accordingly. It seemed she had enough of a sensitivity to sound that she could tune her instruments with ease by ear alone.
After fiddling with the tuning enough, she played a C chord, followed by several others to be sure that it sounded right. Connor could detect that it was indeed tuned correctly to the standard that guitars were typically tuned. And with the speed she changed chords so seamlessly, she was definitely skilled. âYou know, the one good thing that came out of the accident is that I can actually play better with my left hand than I used to be able to.â She said with a chuckle. âI can actually reach the damn frets. That was always a problem for me, cause my fingers were too short and the necks were always too thick for me to be able to play them well. Especially âcause all of my dadâs guitars were, well, for him. Not for me. He taught me how to play.â Her eyes flickered over to the ukulele on the wall. âAlthough I learned to play the ukulele before I played the guitar. Of the two, guitarâs definitely more difficult.â
She demonstrated this by playing more difficult chords one after another, switching seamlessly between them, her hand gliding across the frets. The android couldnât help but find himself hypnotized by the movements of her hand.
She stopped for a moment, not looking at Connor, her eyebrows pressed together as if searching for something. After a moment, she began playing something, her right hand going for something softer and mellower, plucking the strings methodically and rhythmically, her left hand switching notes swiftly.
It was evidently clear that she had practiced a great deal, as her playing seemed so effortless and graceful. She played a long intro before she took in a breath and began to sing.
I know that we are upside down.
So, hold your tongue and hear me out.
I know that we were made to break.
So what? I don't mind.
Connor quickly identified the song as originally by an EDM artist called Zedd, this song in particular featuring vocals by Hayley Williams, also known as Paramore, from the 2012 album Clarity. However, it was evident that this was not in the same style as the original song. It was actually played in the style of a cover of this song sung by an artist named Stassi.
You kill the lights, I'll draw the blinds.
Don't dull the sparkle in your eyes.
I know that we were made to break.
So what? I don't mind.
Software Instability ^ As Connor listened, he began to notice the sheer elegance in Rachelâs voice as she played. Her speaking voice was so brazen, so confident, and so vulgar. She was indeed as much of a foulmouth as the lieutenant was, perhaps one of the reasons they seemed to get along so well. Her loud and energetic speaking voice portrayed her determined and fiery attitude very well.
Are you gonna stay the night?
Are you gonna stay the night?
Oh oh oh, are you gonna stay the night?
But this was much different. Her voice was soft, gentle, graceful, and flowing. There was even a certain gravelly and breathy quality to it that was evident when she sang in the lower octave of the song. Her singing voice now was far more vulnerable, delicate, and soft.Â
Are you gonna stay the night?
Doesn't mean we're bound for life.
So oh oh oh, are you gonna stay the night?
Something that seemed to be evident in the things she kept quiet about during the day. It was a reflection of her gentle, patient, kind, and empathetic nature that was underneath the rough, foul, and brazen displays of anger and boldness. And Connor couldnât tear his attention away from it.
Software Instability ^ As Rachel played the break in the song, Connor found himself absolutely entranced by her musicality, and once again, he could feel something strange happening in his software. Androids didnât need to breathe, only to simulate it to prevent their systems from overheating. But despite knowing it was impossible, he felt as though his breath had been siphoned out of his chest. If he had any other directives or objectives, he had completely forgotten them in his moment, his only focus was on Rachel.
The moment she opened her mouth to move onto the next verse, he could feel something akin to a jump in his pump rate. A warning flashed on-screen.
Software Instability ^ Warning - Overheating
Connor took notice of the warning that appeared on his interface and remembered to take a simulated breath to cool the temperature that was starting to rise in his biocomponents, but not once tearing his attention away from Rachelâs vibrant and gentle voice.
I am a fire, you're gasoline.
Come pour yourself all over me.
We'll let this place go down in flamesÂ
Only one more time.
You kill the lights, I'll draw the blinds.
Don't dull the sparkle in your eyes.
I know that we were made to break.
So what? I don't mind.
Are you gonna stay the night?
Are you gonna stay the night?
Oh oh oh, are you gonna stay the night?
Are you gonna stay the night?
Doesn't mean we're bound for life.
So oh oh, are you gonna stay the night?
The conclusion of the song was drawing near, and Connor had realized that he had unconsciously shifted himself closer, their legs touching. It was strange. He didnât remember inputting any such command.
Software Instability ^Â After Rachel finished playing, she looked up shyly at Connor, just as quickly looking away, instead focusing her gaze on the base of the guitar. âSorry,â she apologized meekly in a way that Connor found typically uncharacteristic of Rachel, but no less endearing. âI havenât played for anyone in a very long time, so forgive me if I seem a bit nervous or awkward.â
Connor couldnât tear his gaze away from her, and felt as though he should break the silence that had wormed its way between them.
Sincere
Analytical
Pleasant
Indifferent
âItâs so different than how you were when I met you just this morning. Itâs far more gentle, elegant, and graceful.â Connor said, a smile on his face. âI thoroughly enjoy hearing you play and I like listening to you sing. Your voice has a unique quality to it, and I hope you know that.â
Software Instability ^ Rachel - Friend ^
The shocked look on her face, coupled with the blush that started to form on her cheeks, and the way she shyly looked away, pressing her face into her shoulder, made Connor feel as though nothing else mattered. He managed to get a glance of her bashful smile before she looked back into his eyes. âThank you.â She said quietly. âI...I really appreciate the compliment.â
They stared at each other for a moment longer, seemingly not wanting to tear their gazes away from each other.
Suddenly, Connor was getting a report, his processors being bombarded with information. âWhat is it?â Rachel asked, noticing his sudden silence.
âI just got a report of a homicide downtown.â Connor stated, looking at Rachel. âWe should go collect Lieutenant Anderson.â
âHuh, well damn. That was fast.â Rachel said with a nod, putting her guitar on the wall and then retrieving her sweater. âWhere exactly is it?â
âThe Eden Club.â Connor replied. âThe most popular android sex club in Detroit.â
âOoooh! Fun!â Rachel said, pulling her phone out of her pocket and squinting at it. âOh. That explains the text I got from Gavin, then.â She then sighed, holding her sweater. âWell, if weâre going somewhere like that, I suppose I should wear something a bit better than just a sweater.â She looked back at Connor with a smirk. âIâll take one of my leather jackets.â She then left the room, Connor following behind her.
Objective complete
As they walked into the living room, she quickly opened her hallway closet, grabbing a pair of leather laced boots and a very thick zip-up leather jacket. Connor tilted his head at her inquisitively, remembering that he had taken his shoes off after coming in and slipping them back on. âStrange, I didnât take you for someone who would have such an affinity for leather clothes.â
Software Instability ^ Rachel gave him a sly side-eye before she put her boots on and got up close to Connor, pulling her jacket up onto her shoulders and zipping herself up, making his breath hitch in his nonexistent throat. âWell, where weâre going, I figured wearing some leather would help me fit right into the environment.â She said in a tone of voice that made his pump skip. âAnd plus, I look pretty damn good in leather.â
She then gave him a wink as she opened the door and exited the house, and Connor found his attention drawn to her hips before he refocused himself on following after her, closing the door and allowing her to lock the door.
The pair made their way to the sidewalk and Connor had already called a taxi to the address. âWhere should we look for the lieutenant?â The android asked his partner.
âJimmyâs Bar, probably.â Rachel said casually, checking her phone. âBut if not, probably at his house getting drunk.â

âDad, stop fussing and leave for work.â Kurt sighs. âIâll be fine, like all other 364 days of the year.â
âKurt.â His dadâs face changes from worried to stern.
Kurt briefly indulges his dad and stares back. âDad.â
âTake a moment for yourself today, okay?â Burt asks. âThatâs all I ask.â He smiles at Kurt. âAnd now Iâm going. I love you, bud.â
Kurt returns the smile. âLove you too, dad. And take a moment for yourself as well.â
âAlways do. By the way, that shirt you designed looks great on you.â
Kurt fumbles with the dark green material. Heâs really proud of it â especially the v-neck that none of his other, more medical-looking shirts have.
âThanks, dad,â he says.
âYou should make me one.â
âWay to spoil my Christmas surprise.â Kurt rolls his eyes. âWould you leave already?â
âJeez, bossy. Youâre so much like your grandma sometimes. I feel like Iâm a kid again, being told off for stealing her cookies.â
âDad, youâre going to be late.â
âAlright, alright.â Burt holds up his hands in apology. âIâm going.â
With that, his dad leaves the kitchen. Kurt follows him to the foyer, a series of rooms separated from the rest of the house â from Kurt, to be precise â by glass doors, where Burt leaves most of his outside belongings and puts on his streetwear over the decontaminated clothes.
He watches his dad get into the car and pull out of the driveway. As soon as there is no chance for him to see Kurt anymore, Kurt sprints up to his room and waves to Blaine.
âGo time!â he adds, smiling widely. Blaine sends a beam his way that makes Kurtâs spine tingle.
The night before, when Kurt was getting ready for bed, Blaine asked whether they could talk. For a moment, Kurt thought he was going to tell him some sort of bed news, but then Blaine spent about five minutes stumbling his way through asking Kurt whether he would like to âmeetâ him sometime. He wasnât even finished actually asking when Kurt said, âTomorrow, 8.15 in the morning, by the living room.â
Never having been more excited that his dad works Saturdays, Kurt wills away his nerves as he goes down to the living room and heads straight toward the window that faces the backyard. Blaine shows up a minute later, clad in a dark blue coat, a scarf and a beanie hat that makes him look more hipster than he usually looks with his bowties and cardigans. His face is a bit flushed, like he ran downstairs and crossed both of their yards to get to Kurt. Maybe he did. The thought makes Kurt smile grow even more.
âHi, Blaine,â he says when Blaineâs finally in front of him, only the glass and a few steps between them.
âHi, Kurt.â Blaine looks Kurt up and down in wonder. âYouâre⊠wow, youâre taller than me.â
Kurt suppresses a grin. âSorry?â he tries.
Blaine laughs. âI like it.â Kurt can only make out the words through the glass if heâs very quiet but it helps having Blaine so near that he can read his lips as well. Theyâre getting better at that. Two months of window conversations are paying off.
âYou do?â he asks happily. âAnd you⊠you look cozy.â
âItâs actually not as cold outside as I thought. I feel a bit hot,â Blaine admits.
Kurtâs not going to tell him to lose some layers, obviously, but he canât help but remark, âGood thing youâre not actually stepping inside, then.â
âI want to, though,â Blaine says. âSometime else.â
âItâs a date,â Kurt breathes out, nervously noting that he just called it a date. They never specified what⊠this⊠was. But Blaine was fumbling so badly on the phone, it just-
âAnother one,â Blaine confirms with a smile. Kurt swears he feels his heart jump a little. âEven if itâs a bit weird to go on a date at 8.15 in the morning.â
â8.20,â Kurt corrects, just to have something to say, given that all his nerves are screaming, Youâre on a date! âMy dad just wouldnât leave.â
âDoes he have a sixth sense for sons who schedule secret get-aways to the living room?â Blaine asks, grinning brightly.
âNo, heâs just-â Kurt wants to make an offhand comment, explain the day away like itâs nothing, but he canât. Itâs Blaine, for one, and itâs also his mother. âMy mom died on this day nine years ago.â
Blaineâs eyes widen. âOh, Kurt⊠I had no idea. I mean.â Blaine gulps. âOf course I didnât. But- Iâm sorry, Kurt. If you need to be aloneâŠâ
âNo,â Kurt says firmly, fighting against the pressure behind his eyes. âI miss her, of course, and I usually cry my eyes out on this day, but I told you to come over so I wouldnât be alone. At least for like two hours before Carole comes over.â He rolls his eyes. âIâm sorry weâre on a schedule.â
âDonât be silly,â Blaine says. âItâs nice to⊠well.â Kurt watches as he attempts a formal bow. âNice to meet you. You know, officially. Kind of.â
Kurt laughs, eyes watering. âLikewise. My mom would have totally gone for your sense of humor, you know?â
âAwkward but weirdly adorable?â Blaine tilts his head and gives him puppy-dog eyes, driving the point home.
Kurt bites his lip, fails to hold in a grin, and says, âSomething along those lines, yeah.â
âIs that her?â Blaine asks, pointing behind Kurt. Kurt follows the line of his finger to the urn on the fireplace.
He turns back around and nods. âMom, meet Blaine. Blaine, meet mom.â
âHi, Mrs. Hummel,â Blaine says at once. âThis is weird.â
âIt is,â Kurt agrees. âAnd she would like you to call her Elizabeth, Iâm sure.â
âIâll reconsider after our third date or so,â Blaine replies.
âSmooth.â Kurt laughs. âPlanning the third date while still on the first. Youâre very thorough. Do you have cue cards as well?â
âUhm, no. For some weird reason I was convinced we could manage to hold a conversation,â Blaine says, pretending to frown. Kurt thinks back to their long talks at the window, on the phone or texting, how Blaine probably knows more about Kurt than Rachel at this point.
âYouâre definitely right.â
âWell, I want to hear all about Rachelâs newest plans for your future Broadway Bubble Babies career.â
âOh god, you wonât believe how detailed her thoughts on this are. Weâre both taking online singing classes already but now she wants to enter this career prospects mentoring program and see if they can get us mentors over Skype. And she wants us to co-produce a YouTube version of The Last Five Years, since itâs a musical for two.â
âUhm, I need to meet her already!â Blaine gushes. Kurt loves how much he loves Rachel from Kurtâs stories alone. âThat sounds like the greatest idea ever!â
The two hours pass in a flash. Kurt basks in Blaineâs focused and passionate attention, listens to Blaine talk animatedly about the New Directionsâ madness during competition season and they make plans for a Skype session with both of their best friends so that Blaine can meet Rachel and Wes, Blaineâs best friend at Dalton, can meet Kurt.
Blaineâs in the middle of telling Kurt about his familyâs Christmas plans when Kurt hears the key to the front door turn in the lock, and then the unmistakable sliding sound of the front door opening.
âSorry for interrupting,â he says with a sad smile. âBut itâs Carole. Itâll take her about five minutes to actually get in and change and all that, but you should probably get going.â
Blaineâs sad face matches his.
âItâs not that I donât want my family to know about you,â he tries to reassure Blaine. âBut today, I kind of wanted to take this moment for myself.â
Blaine waves it off. âDonât worry about it. I know itâs easier this way. You donât have to tell them at all if you donât want.â
Kurt smiles knowingly at Blaineâs quick agreement. âYouâre scared of my dad, arenât you?â
âTerrified.â
Kurtâs cheeks are hurting from smiling so much. âYou donât have to be,â he promises. âWell, I guess this is goodbye for now.â
âGoodbye for now,â Blaine echoes. He pulls off his left glove and lets the hand come to rest on the window. âThis was nice, I had fun.â
Kurtâs right hand shakes slightly as he lays it on the glass to mirror Blaineâs. If he pretends hard enough, itâll feel like theyâre touching.
âI had fun, too,â he whispers, locking eyes with Blaine. âYouâre fun.â
Blaineâs face is so close to the window now Kurt feels like he could count all his eyelashes (an ambitious endeavor), name a new color after Blaineâs eyes (smouldering honey gold) and remember the shape of Blaineâs lips well enough to draw a picture of them later (to have something to kiss at least).
âKurtâŠâ Blaine blinks at him, visibly intrigued by Kurtâs intense stare.
Kurt breaks out of his little fantasy world with a big sigh.
âTo be continued,â he says firmly.
âI know.â Blaine huffs out a laugh. âBut I really donât want to go right now.â
âIâll text you as soon as Iâm upstairs.â Kurt rolls his eyes when Blaine stays rooted to the spot. For the second time today, if a bit more reluctantly this time, he says, âWould you leave already?â
He watches as Blaine retreats to his house, fumbling with the key to his front door before pulling it wide open and slipping inside.
It feels like the perfect metaphor for what heâs doing with Kurtâs heart.

post knd global command headcanons
rachel runs just before her decom, but she tells fanny of her plan first ie. sheâs going with patton, information from chad, theyâll keep in contact
while rachel does chose numbu 5 to be the next supreme leader, she doesnât tell her why she runs. fannyâs the only one who knows and sworn to secrecy
still fannyâs been acting off so abby asks her some questions about rachel and whatnot, fanny talks about rachel but nothing that abby didnât already know
itâs only when rachel finds out that oH GOD THEYâRE DOING PLANETARY DECOM does she tell fanny to tell abby, and she and patton returns to eath while chad tries to stop nigelÂ
once abby finds out she insists on going into space to confront nigel herself despite fanny telling her hey rachelâs returning
fanny tells rachel and sheâs just âoh come on wHATâ but after a bit of thought decides that abbyâll deal with nigel wellÂ
fanny steps in as supreme leader for about a week to sort out the chaos of three supreme leaders in a row just running, then suggests for kuki to be supreme leader who accepts with some reluctance but figures with the gknd stuff going on and her having known nigel she probably should
wally assists kuki and is arctic base drill seagent. hoagieâs a engineer on moonbase and works on something to see through gknd disguises
though rachel and patton are back on earth they still often donât tell fanny where they are out of fear of safety. rachel and patton are going after separate things, patton provides suspected gknd operatives and searches their bases while rachel spies on the gknd and communications.Â
abby doesnât keep in touch, but sheâs ran into chad who was taken prisoner by the gknd so he suggested she take a more subtle approach until safer which she does
creeâs captured by the gknd, and alerts maurice. while he initially thought they were good, but cree and chad interacts and chad finds out that cree has contact with maurice so he explains everything to maurice
maurice stays on earth and still fights the teen ninjas as undercover, but keeps an eye out and does spying on the gknd if possible
creeâs handed some info about the knd over to the gknd
while abby knows that creeâs also in space and maurice knows of the gknd, she keeps away from cree in case of betrayal (chad keeps the info too) and mentally notes about maurice for when she returns to earth
fannyâs entered into the tnd, thanks to some prior string pulling by rachel before turning fugitive. keeps in touch with rachel but still little/no idea where she is
fanny and rachel keep in contact, rachelâs also in contact with patton and chad, chad confers with abby every so often and fights with nigel often. itâs just this mess where rachel and chad have most of the information
chad gets decomed and sent back to earth by the gknd because heâs just not helping their cause at all. rachel finds out and, well itâs not good since chad knew quite a bit about the gknd
abby watches as nigel decides to decom earth, but she still havenât revealed herself. she goes to search if thatâs immediate or if it can be reversed
finds it can be reversed, but now doesnât have anyone to contact. tries to reverse it but thereâs a password. calls moonbase instead and sector V gets involved and decided to go to space. before leaving hoagie left his anti-gknd disguise thing to the rest of the scientists
fanny is so annoyed that 4 supreme leaders in a row decided to run, but sheâs tnd so canât do anything about it. decides to talk to maurice and surprise, he knew about the gknd too. they decide to work together
rachel expresses some doubts, but the two are good operatives so it should work. asks fanny if she can track down a recom module or make one. she says sheâll try
abby decides its time to confront nigel, they fight, the gknd gets involved, abby gets taken prisonor and thrown in the same area as cree. they talk and both decide to take down the gknd
nigelâs feeling lowkey regret
after a spacefight, sector V show up and break abby out of the prison area. they take cree and after some suspicion, decided to work together. they fly back to earth, and are also now all fugitives
after much frustration fanny decides to sneak into knd and ask the new head of decom if anyone knows of the recom module. he refuses to until she tells her the gknd is involved, and gives her the broken peices. also mentions hoagieâs anti-gknd disguise which fanny takes a prototype of to also try to improve upon
sector v breaking into gknd for abby makes nigel highkey regret earth, and he doesnât completely like the mistrust in the gknd so decides to undo the decom decision for the time being, but is seen by the gknd so he runs
meets numbuh 9L and hearing of what happened makes him dislike the gknd more, so those two work together against the gknd.Â
with cree and some tnd/teen ninjas (maurice reveals him being tnd to cree), the tnd, and teen ninjas decide to work together to stop the gknd. they wonder about getting the knd involved
fanny fixes the recom modual, and asks rachel to meet up somewhere for it. sheâs also got a basically working anti-gknd disguise ray gun
the entire time pattonâs still raiding gknd bases and stealing, spying and breaking stuff. heâs in contact with rachel, the two meet up often
fanny gives the stuff to rachel, fanny also confesses her crush and so does rachel, and then rachel goes off to recom chad and catch him up on everything. she also recoms The Steve as 100 and he agrees to help too
with some string pulling the supreme leader of the knd, numbuh 78, is also entered into the tnd. from then chad, rachel, abby and kuki explain the tnd and gknd to her and beg her to get the knd involved. 78 agrees.
so the tnd, teen ningas, and knd are all joined against the gknd on earth. sector V (minus nigel), chad, cree, maurice, steve, rachel, patton, fanny, abby, kuki, wally, hoagie and 78 spend more time together planninng how to take on the gknd
they also assemble more people such as scientists to work on the anti-gknd disguise tech, and occationally giving sectors jobs. patton still works alone but still plans with everyone else and trains others, rachel and abby assemble a spying team, fanny recoms more former operatives with chad just in case said operative decides to turn traitor
they start fighting the gknd openly now with multiple verisons of hoagieâs anti-disguise tech (eg. ray guns, glasses, radiators, etc.) and eventually the gknd decides to negotiate a treaty: the gknd can keep some bases on earth but anything involving humans will have to go through the earth knd first
meanwhile nigelâs wreaking havoc in space with numbuh 9L. they hear of the situation on earth, and nigel decides to return to his friends
sector V and 9L goes to negotiate with the gknd in general and the gknd agrees to end planetary decom, but theyâll continue looking for a cure for adulthood
the entire process took maybe year and a half and thereâs probably more space villains at this point but oh well at least the earth still exists
#knd#gknd#knd talk#bASICALLY A MESS OF IMPULSIVNESS AND MISCOMUNICATION#it wasn't supposed to be this long buuuuuuuut#i mean ive been working on it for a couple of days so. yeah.#idk about the supreme leader after kuki i think maybe bartie until he was decomed bc age then 78#yeah im gonna sleep now

Power and the Princess problem
(Old speculations: https://carilynn27.wordpress.com/2010/12/11/indiana-jones-he-man-she-ra-and-biblical-symbolism/)
Happy holidays folks: the moment the winter really comes in is one of the few summits between the Solar and the Lunar in the Hebrew calendar. Dec. 4th is the day the rainprayer comes in earnest and so: the New season equinox. This is one of the great opportunities for bridging and healing hearth and internal process, so in that spirit-- She-Ra and The Princesses of Power tries to resolve an epic mythic moral quandary: the responsibility of the privileged.  She is classically, the first of the âwokeâ heroines, alerted to being a villain and switching sides to join the noble rebels, irony of ironies in light of the absurdity of a toy line just being marketed speaking to virtue or progressive righteousness. But this is part of the pop covenant: toys cannot e sold unless the buyer can feel good about them, rather than compromised or idolatrous. We began this Tumblr feed with the question of how a viciously anti-iconic religious fundamentalist narrative and tradition could make space for the place of heroes and characters with divine powers on All Our Kids Things. The simplest answer, traditionally going back to the prioritizing of âTeraphimâ amongst the house of Rachel throughout the bible, even into the original Kingdom of Saul, whose daughter, Michal, the most humiliated of Biblical Princesses (as opposed to Queens, who suffer even worse humilations and indignities alas.) Recall: in order to legally be allowed to construct a childrenâs cartoon during prime kid watching hours, the original He-man cartoon had to have The Best Morals, eloquently and unmissably isolated and pointed to at the end of every episode... ... and thus had the full privilege of depicting beautiful muscular and hulking people in various states of archaic undress fighting an ongoing guerillla war against each other. Monsters equally erotic. covered in body hair and drooling, cackling, tho oft veiled and masked for added terror and confusion, the heroes are magnificent, affectionate, appreciative, and experienced as wholehearted stand ins for the children also experiencing themselves as whole hearted, wholey expressed bold moral-yet-playful adventurers, making the world safe for their lifeplay. Where the first series allowed to be this way. He-man, a synecretic Conan/Lovecraft by way of Star Wars and funneled through the holiest King Jack Kirby zâl was based in a World/universe/reality where the King was Good and ruled over a good Kingdom, in the aspect of Arthur or Dhul Karnayim, as well as Franz Josef in some modernity narratives, and even Rudolf II https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rudolf_II,_Holy_Roman_Emperor In this universe, the monarchy was good and the rebels in the swamps and forest were straight up evil monsters, Skull face Litches and insect hungered,  animal savage or terrifyingly accented, these were easy villains to fear and resent, and feel good in the triumph against. And then school preschool games would turn violent, and a kid would feel self-righteous as He-man, standing up for the good order-- parents began to complain. The valorization of violent He-man, whoâs actually the prince of the Kingdom and the spoiled son of the King Randor, who secretly was initiated into ancient cosmic mysteries, specifically of and in a Sword (lol). His twin sister has the second half of the sword, and itâs a little different in her universe, specifically a tikkun on the excesses and criticisms of He-manâs ostensible ethos: Here, the great Empire, The Evil Horde, is the ruling power and their drone army ruins everything nice and steals money from all villagers. SHE IS PART OF THIS ARMY, for sublime cosmic inversionary reasons, stolen by the Empire but soon/eventually to realize her true responsibility and identity as the protector of the good-- here is the beginning of the princess problem! Being trapped. In the good or in the bad, the main thing resented by the princess is the cage of privileged, especially when made aware of the horrors that her comfort depends on. This comes in great question and challenge in the most recent and enduring of Disney re-clarifications in Frozen: the unchecked princess, letting it go. Being all destructive and not worrying about consequence because she really doesnât have to until her heart is melted by her sister, and not any other human consideration imposed. This idea of the Will of the Princess transcending morality or accountability has long been recognized as a theological/kabbalistic principle about the mystery of What Reality Is, where G-d is hidden, and what faith demands. Iâll try to explain briefly: Rabbi Nachman of Breslov gave up theology and began teaching only in the context of fairy tales he would tell (Tales of Ancient days). The first and last and middle most of these stories is about the Princess problem. That is, again: feeling trapped. By anything. The good or the bad. Râ Nachmanâs cosmic supernal princess narrative as metaphor for the order of creation, and nature of The Problem Forever Until: Once upon a time there was a King                                    The Original and Fundamental He had six sons and one Daughter. He loved her so much but one day he got angry at her about something or another and he shouted âmay the Evil One take you awayâ and in the morning she was gone and he was so sad The King had a Viceroy/Hero who volunteered to go and find her and eventually he will And a whole story goes from there, of effort, hope and occasional revelation followed by profound personal disappointment but the never ending will and hope to find her, that does lead to her being found, someday. The Princess has long been identified in kabbalistic metaphor as the True Purpose and the only revelable, experiential face of G-d. Wagner similarly enthrones Votanâs eldest daughter leader over the Valkyrie and both knower and expressor of the Original godâs true inexpressible will, tho he comes into full conflict with her (and thus, himself) over this issue. Malkhut, in Western Thelema, has a bit of a bad reputation, like the Vedic/Eastern âMayaâ, reality as illusion for the mystic adept who would see beyond it. This has been the bias of western âswordâ religion: the feminine intuitive/bias emotional discredited as untrustworthy since Gilgamesh and into all the legalistic, patristic monotheiae. The reclamation of the âSwordâ by the feminine has been the core empowerment narrative since antiquity, Athenaâs logic, strategy and clarity expressed even in the pragmatic biblical heroines like Judith and Jael, as well as Serach bat Asher, Tzipporah (emergency smashing glass to construct a blade to circumcise her son to rescue her husband Moses from âthe snakeâ).
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/b/b6/Giaele_e_Sisara.JPG/1024px-Giaele_e_Sisara.JPG Here, and for children watching a show, the transformation ritual is central to the gifting to children the Power window of actively expressed will. The commercials are hoping the children will express that will to invest into the company and concept by buying The Things with the Icons engraved, or miniatures of the Icons themselves. Contemplative iconography saved the life of King David, because his wife Princess Michal keeps them around the house, and uses one to distract guards from the escape of her beloved, in a sort of Biblical Ferris Bueller moment. The lifesized statue in the corner, of god-only-knows who (Tammuz?) https://popcartoonkabala.tumblr.com/search/tammuz This modern She-ra inverts this all. There is no image but for the Castle, and suddenly all the human impact of the terrible empire becomes clear, and a moment for self reflection, acknowledgement of priviledge, and a look at the larger, older traditions that True Freedom and Righteous Princessing depend on. Because signifigant in this version, heavily influenced by Adventure Timeâs adaptation and update of the Princess concept. As Science explorers or decadent priviledged candy people, Adventure Time radically recovered the Fantasy Cartoon tropes into Post-modern accessibility. Princesses of Power does this too, agressively critiquing the alienation of The Princesses while sympathizing with their terror at a world of violence and Unstopable Empire. Check it out. More to say soon. But first, check this most profound of R Nachmanâs Princess Narratives, and see what you can make of it: Page 35 is The Pirate Princess, followed by commentary: https://books.google.co.il/books?id=TiRjDwAAQBAJ&printsec=frontcover&dq=Palace+of+pearls&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwj-_ubUz43fAhXP2qQKHeC-DGEQ6AEIJzAA#v=onepage&q&f=false

FXâs Legion Chapter 4 Directed by Larysa Kondracki Written by Nathaniel Halpern
* For a recap & review of Chapter 3, click here. * For a recap & review of Chapter 2, click here. We open on Jemaine Clement playing Oliver Bird, husband of Dr. Melanie Bird (Jean Smart). He paraphrases Friedrich Nietzscheâs quote: âUnder peaceful conditions, the warlike man attacks himself.â He speaks about the fear of the unknown, and violence as ignorance. Everything around himâs cold. Very, very cold. Then he mentions empathy v. fear in telling stories to children. Ought to remind us of David Haller (Dan Stevens) being told the story of that angry boy. Back to present events. Syd Barrett (Rachel Keller), Ptonomy Wallace (Jeremie Harris), Dr. Bird, theyâve been sucked into the world of David, the one trapped in his head. Thereâs no telling if anything is real, at any point in time. At Summerland, Cary Loudermilk (Bill Irwin) tells them thereâs no medical explanation for why Davidâs in a coma-like state now. Neither he nor Ptonomy can figure it out. Heâs stuck between dreams and reality, somewhere. Theyâve got to discover what happened to David before he wound up at Clockworks Hospital, what damaged him so bad. Off they go, searching for answers. They go to the places where his memories took them. First, the office of Dr. Poole (Scott Lawrence). Ptonomy and Syd discuss what happened in Davidâs memories, the abnormal âtearâ in the physical space where they experienced those moments. They find a recording device from the doctorâs sessions, beaten, bloody hand prints on it â using their powers, it comes back to life and tells them of a possibly brutal, violent crime. Poole was beaten horribly with savage force. But, did David actually do that? Or was it the dark entity, The Devil with the Yellow Eyes? Did he break into Pooleâs office originally to steal things for drugs? Was it something else? Weâll see. âWhat did the stars say?â Poor Amy Haller (Katie Aselton) is still being held captive, too. Sheâs not faring well, psychologically. Although she discovers thereâs someone else nearby locked in a cell just like her: Davidâs former doctor at Clockworks. She laments not realising sooner there was something different about her brother, since he was young he moved from âroom to roomâ and even further at times. He talked to people frequently, such as their dog King. Only they never had one. Everyone around the manâs been affected. Amy is in a cell, alongside the doc. Meanwhile, Syd, Ptonomy, and Kerry Loudermilk (Amber Midthunder) are searching for the clues that will lead them to the answers. We get the story about the Loudermilks, or, well⊠the one Loudermilk. They share a body, Cary and Kerry. Two people in a single body, though the experience for each of them isnât entirely identical, Kerry exists in a sort of spirit state while Cary is the more corporeal form on a regular basis; she comes out to play when necessary. In her office, Dr. Bird has a vision of a person in an old school-type diverâs suit. She tells Cary of the incident, hoping itâs a sign David may be coming back to the land of the living. The guy in the suit is Oliver. His physical body is kept frozen in a chamber downstairs.
David, in one of his mindfuck landscapes, meets Oliver. Not really, he just gets a wave from the diving suit-clad dead guy. To follow him elsewhere. So, they head into the great unknown together, as David follows him to a ladder. Up, up, up. This leads to that place where first we saw Oliver, talking to us. That freezing place. There, Oliver sits for a drink and a chat with his new friend. âWhatâs real in this space is whatever you want it to be, so, my feeling is: why not wait in style?â he quips to David. Bad news â Davidâs lost. Good news? Oliver has himself a bit of company. And someone to bounce beat poetry off when the mood strikes. They get to talking about David and his powers, the monster waiting for him around every corner. Now heâs intent on getting out of that cold place. He plunges back into the âvast subconsciousâ in order to make his way back to real life. If possible. Oliver certainly doesnât assuage any fears, warning him things get tricky out there, outside of that protected place. Ptonomy and Syd go to visit Davidâs ex-girlfriend. To scan her memories. They need to find more of his past, from wherever it comes. Back through a few of them, Ptonomy watches a dinner with the formerly happy couple and Dr. Poole. Then he finds traces of another memory within it: they know where Poole lives. Ah, and more comes to light! Lenny (Aubrey Plaza) was actually a drug pusher named Benny. Plus, the ex tells Syd and Ptonomy ominously: âTell him theyâre watching.â Oh, my. So many questions. Implanted memories, hidden secrets. What is real? They track down Dr. Poole at a lighthouse, whoâs reluctant to speak about David. Soon he tells them about the good and bad sides of his former patient. He says heâd actually like to see David again. Because he needs answers, after having his entire life ruined. Afterwards, they find themselves trapped by The Eye (Mackenzie Gray). Nothing is real. Armed men lay siege to the lighthouse. The trio run upstairs, but Kerryâs ready to take the offensive to their attackers. A fight breaks loose, where Kerry fights (and Cary goes through the motions back at Summerland), and we also see The Eye in action for the first time, he has his own powers. Unfortunately, Kerryâs taken down. But Syd, she touches The Eye with her bare hands. You know what THAT means! Note: This is one of the best sequences of the series so far in these first four episodes. So powerful, exciting. Gives us awesome insight into the Cary-Kerry dynamic, as well. Davidâs brought into another headspace with/by Lenny. She has things to talk about with him. She chastises him for going with Dr. Bird, ending up in Coma Land. He only wants the truth, even if sheâs intent on her own designs. She riles him up into an angry, terrifying state. Lenny: âUncle Fiddly with the glasses and the angry girl inside him, they could be fingering you right now.â Then suddenly, David is in the woods. He runs a truck off the road containing Syd and the others; he doesnât realise thereâs been a switcheroo. This starts up an awkward chase, as David urges Syd â The Eye â to run. When they switch back, The Eye puts a bullet into Kerry, sending Cary back at Summerland into a bleeding tailspin. Not so sure anymore that Lennyâs there to help David, not at all. Seeing as how she appears on his shoulder, while her hand looks suspiciously like one belonging to the Devil with the Yellow Eyes.
Another fascinating Chapter in Legion! Wow. Every one gets better visually than the last. I donât doubt weâll see the momentum charge forward in Chapter 5. Lots of weird and wild action afoot.
