Requests are open!
From the moment he’d laid eyes on you, a newborn still covered in the blood and fluids of Feyre, cradled gently in her arms, he’d known you would be special.
Not just special to him as a family member, in the same way your older brother, Nyx, was, but something deep in him, more ancient and wise, had known.
He’d watched you grow up, always watching quietly along with everyone else as you slowly grew.
When you’d started crawling, large blue eyes peering up at Rhys as you had giggled and cooed, legs and arms moving clumsily in tandem to your father, who was kneeling, arms open and beckoning you to come closer. Feyre had been sat down on the edge of the couch, Nyx, only four years old, sitting on her lap as she’d raked fingers through his dark curls.
“There’s my pretty girl,”
Rhys had murmured to you in a soft tone as you’d finally made your way into his arms, he’d picked you up and began gently giving you little kisses as your pudgy little hands grabbed at him, hooking onto his bottom lip and tugging.
Cassian’s hearty laughter could be heard from across the room as he walked in to find you pulling on every part of your father you could get your hands on. He had plopped down on the couch next to Feyre, leaning back slightly and settling as Nyx crawled into his lap.
Azriel had been there when you’d taken your first steps. When your tiny little legs had slowly, unsteadily begun moving, arms thrown out to balance as your fuzzy little wings had been stretched to the side to hopefully keep you from falling.
What had been the thing that had made you finally walk after all of your parents failed attempts to entice you into it?
A beetle.
It sounded ridiculous, and looking back on it, it was.
Nyx had originally brought it in, hoping to scare you and make you run away from it, with Feyre hot on his heels trying to make him put it back down.
Whether it had been the way its wings had flapped so quickly, or the shiny, rainbow iridescence of its shell that reminded you of the rainbows that formed over the Sidra after light rain, you’d been fascinated. Feyre had let out an ear-piercing squeak as soon as she’d seen you start walking, and towards a live bug no less.
Rhys was there in an instant, clearly wondering what had caused his mate such distress when he caught the sight of it and grinned larger than ever before, maybe. Nyx got closer to you, the bug still squirming in his hands, but before he could get it to the babbling baby, Azriel calmly stepped in and gently grabbed the shiny insect, releasing it out of an open window.
He remembered your first word, which, unsurprisingly, had been “mama”. He remembered your first day of school, where you had been shy and almost shed a few tears when separating from your parents.
And gods, he definitely remembered your first day of middle school, when you’d come home sniffling and his first instinct had been to murder whoever had made you feel such a way.
It had been happy tears, apparently, when a friend you’d lost contact with long ago after leaving your elementary school early had met back up with you, in the same grade and class.
High school had also been a nightmare, for the entire family because of your frequent mood swings, not to mention the never-ending drama and gossip surrounding the High Lord and Lady’s daughter and son. Nyx had been a Senior when you’d first gone in as a Freshmen.
Due to your generally quiet and reserved temperament, there was little dating from you to deal with, luckily, but Nyx had been a nightmare. The boy was a player, to say the least, not to mention how he made it his personal mission to annoy you to death anytime you were having sleepovers or hangouts with your closest friends.
“Get out…!”
You had half-yelled, half-whispered from inside your pillow fort, your friend quietly giggling beside you. It was midnight and Nyx still wouldn’t leave you alone. One hand swatted the blanket entrance to the side, and Nyx’s smirking face met yours as he then lay on the floor, chest down, legs playfully swinging.
“Don’t be shy, spill all the drama.”
He drawled, eyes dancing with amusement. Your friend giggled, hiding behind you, apparently finding your brother incredibly funny. Annoyingly funny.
“I’ll call Cassian.”
You threatened, giving Nyx a look. He simply raised a brow, smirk widening.
“You wouldn’t dare interrupt his beauty sleep, would you?”
You huffed, the knowledge that Cassian was asleep this early making you not want to wake him. You were always like that, worrying about others, and caring for them. Suddenly, an idea hit you, and a small smile curled on your lips, one that seemed to make Nyx nervous as his eyes widened.
“Don’t even-“
He got that far before you called out for Azriel, his shadows most likely carrying the yelled whispers out to him, and in a moment he was there, oddly quick for your call. He took one look at the pillow fort, the scent of you and your friend inside, and Nyx’s intrusion, and grabbed him, carrying him easily out of the room and nodding at your giggled thanks.
From then on, something seemed to shift between you and your shadowsinger.
The way he looked at you had changed, but it wasn’t overly obvious. Nothing had been added, it was still respectful as ever, even when he’d spied your prom dress, or your graduation dress, a beautiful mixture of light and airy but still tight in the right places, fabric cascading down your body in shades of rich purples, highlights of a gentle yellow reflecting the glow of the stars amidst a dark skylight.
That dress had nearly brought him to his knees. It had been one of the many that Rhysand’s mother had made before her death.
Still, he’d never let his gaze linger, never had a hint of anything darker or longing in his hazel eyes, but something had changed. The familial connection you had with him seemed to have fallen more into that of a friend, or almost an authority figure, but not quite. What it was, you couldn’t ever figure out.
However, the Cauldron had its own plans, ones that nobody in the family could’ve expected.
*********************************************************
It had been the night of Starfall, coincidentally only a few days after your eighteenth birthday. Rhys always liked to tease you, saying if you’d only waited a few more days then you could’ve shared your special day with one of the most special days of the year in Night Court.
Azriel had taken extra time to get ready for tonight, dressing himself comfortably, but also regally. It wasn’t too much, and it wasn’t too little. He liked teetering on the balance between the two, it often let him blend into the background while his brothers enjoyed their mates.
When he arrived, he’d first seen Nyx slip off into a dance with another woman of Night Court, not too uncommon for the male at these parties.
Nesta danced with Cassian, playfully teasing him about something as he laughed and retorted, all the while Feyre and Rhys slowly danced between sipping on glasses of wine, content to bask in this moment together.
Family dances weren’t uncommon, which was why you didn’t think much of it when Azriel offered you his hand for a dance. It was almost a habit at this point, as you two ended up lumped together now since everyone else seemed to have found their happy ending.
“If you need to fuck someone, go to a pleasure hall and pay for it, but leave her alone.”
Rhysand had told him. And he had left Elain alone.
Now, weeks, months, and years later, Elain was happy with Lucien, basking in his warmth and domesticity as they both shared a home in Day Court, Lucien now the proclaimed heir of Helion after his heritage was discovered and revealed.
Mor was still “single”, but Azriel knew better, with the way she still gave eyes to that one waitress at Rita’s who always touched and looked at her longer than necessary. That was Mor’s decision on whether to reveal it to the family or not, and he understood it.
Nyx was still…hopping from female to female, happy with the cheap thrills the Night Court ladies could give him. According to his shadows, the boy had recently caught the eyes of a specific girl, his usual pattern of getting bored and moving on crumbling in the face of her.
However, it was just you and Azriel, surrounded by mated couples and lovers as he gently pulled you closer to him, hands intertwining with his with a practiced ease, while you both began a slow, gentle dance to the rhythm of the music. Your eyes were on the stars, the ones which your father had always told you were spirits migrating, or traveling on this day in particular, for whatever reason.
His eyes were on you, watching as your deep blue eyes, freckled with what looked like stars amidst an aurora haze observed the night sky. No matter how many times you saw it, it always seemed to amaze you. Something he was a bit jealous of.
Your black hair, midnight as your father’s, fell in waves against your tanned skin, a fair mixture between your mother and father. The dark wings, courtesy of your father, were tucked neatly in on your back, as they usually were during events like these, though they slowly relaxed as you got lost in the music and cool atmosphere of this night.
It was then that it had happened.
You had turned to look at him, blue eyes full of the quiet appreciation and confidence that mirrored his own in some ways, meeting his dark hazel ones, that sparks seemed to fly in both of your veins.
His eyes widened, something you had seldom seen before. The shadows around him tightened, agitated, before going to your side and some wrapping around you, their whispered touches cold against your warm skin.
Both of your feet faltered, hands that were intertwined loosening, but staying together. It was only the two of you in that moment, everything else seemed to be drowned out by the roaring in your ears.
That was what he had been to you, never an uncle like Cassian, never a full authority figure, not a friend, but your mate.
The realization of what had just happened hit like a brick. You and Azriel were mates. It had taken your father almost five centuries to find his mate, the same for Cassian, and you were lucky enough to find him this early in life. You mentally wrapped tender hands around the golden thread in your chest, tying you both together, and very hesitantly pulled on it.
Based on the way he jerked and twitched, before pulling on his end, making you do the same thing, colliding with his chest with a small ‘oomph’, confirmed everything for the both of you.
He hesitantly wrapped his arms around you, watching painfully close for any tiny sign of fear, pain, anger…, anything he didn’t want to cause. You could only wrap your arms around him in return, too enamored with the male in front of you to care about the two of you embracing like lovers at Starfall, for all to see.
They could see, you didn’t mind.
*********************************************************
From the moment the bond had snapped, and overwhelming heat and affection had flooded his being, Azriel knew he was fucked.
Wrapping his arms around you felt like the best thing he’d ever experienced, filling that empty, hollow space inside of him. It felt as if you were melting into him, slowly filling every hole, sealing every crack and crevice, except for the one thing left; accepting it.
He would die before putting pressure on you. You would accept it when you were ready. Even then, as much as he hated the thought of Rhys throwing around his status again, he knew he had to do this carefully or he could very well be banned from seeing you until you were deemed ‘ready’.
Even now Rhys was watching, eyes narrowing in what looked like curiosity as he watched the scene before him, his daughter and shadowsinger, both reserved, slightly shy people, openly embracing and seeming utterly lost in each other. If that hadn’t given it away, then the tears that seemed to well up in Azriel’s eyes, and the ones already running down your cheeks, did.
He murmured something quietly to Feyre, slipping off with an apologetic glance as he walked quickly over to you, trying to gently pull you into his arms. That always worked. To his surprise, you clung to Azriel like he was a lifeline, turning to him, crying silently as you sniffled.
His first urge was to slaughter Azriel for whatever he’d done to upset you, but he knew that wasn’t reasonable.
“What’s-?”
He began to ask, before meeting Azriel’s gaze. His eyes were welled with what looked like tears, pure desperation and pleading so strong in his eyes, something he hadn’t seen before from his Spymaster.
“We’re mates.”
The two words were almost a whisper, but as soon as he heard it, his heart nearly stopped. From the way you clung to Azriel, he could tell that you probably wouldn’t reject the bond whatsoever, and the way Azriel held you, his touch desperate but also so loving and gentle, he knew that it would be hopeless to try and separate you two.
His hand went to rub the bridge of his nose for a moment, before his eyes went to you again, then glancing up at Azriel, a silent question in his gaze.
‘Can you control yourself around her?’
Azriel seemed almost relieved at that, nodding almost imperceptibly. He had amazing control over himself, Rhys knew that about him, but with a mate, and his daughter at that? He was anxious, which wasn’t common for the High Lord. With a sigh, he spoke again.
“Have fun, but don’t rush anything. We can talk through this in the morning.”
Your father said, another sharp glance at Azriel, before he returned to Feyre’s side, no doubt informing her on what had happened. His violet eyes burned into the two of you all night as you danced and laughed and Azriel even managed to get you to take a little sip of wine, at which you deemed it “gross” and poured it out.
The night didn’t last nearly long enough, as Azriel finally escorted you back to your room, embracing you one last time in a way that made him feel complete, before leaning down and murmuring into your ear.
“Sleep well. We have plenty to do tomorrow.”
The tips of your ears turned pink at the implication, but he was gone before you could even get a word in. You reluctantly crawled into bed, trying to get at least a wink of sleep in, and barely succeeding.
*********************************************************
The next morning was a bit awkward, not to mention nerve-wracking.
Your parents looked worried, and your father seemed a bit stern, unusual for him this early in the morning. Azriel was already seated on the couch, scarred fingers twitching as they drummed against his thigh when you walked in, sitting right next to him.
His wing curled instinctively around you, with him not giving a damn about what Rhys or Feyre thought of it.
With a heavy sigh, Rhys turned to face you, meeting your gaze.
“Do you want to-”
“Yes.”
You replied, not an inch of hesitation or uncertainty in your usually quiet tone. Gods, you wanted to accept the bond, all you needed was for your parents to give their permission, and hopefully approve of it.
Rhys’ eyes narrowed, studying you and Azriel, before softening. His little girl was all grown up, and it was unfair to try and pull rank or any other bullshit to keep her from her mate, or to keep Azriel from his equal.
“You can use the cabin, I’ll…be checking on you.”
He said, voice rough with emotion. Azriel nodded, a silent thanks before his hands gently pulled you onto his lap. In a swirl of darkness and shadows, you were both sitting on the couch of the cabin in Illyria, your mother’s paintings still bright and fresh in the warm cabin.
“You know what to do, right?”
He asked, the words quiet but affectionate.
You gave a little nod. Offer him food. That was pretty much it.
“I’ll just go get an apple or something. Also, could you start the fire? It’s freezing.”
He chuckled quietly, the sound rich and deep, before pressing a kiss to your forehead and reluctantly getting up to go light the wood in the fireplace.
You walked over into the kitchen, pulling a fresh apple from what looked to be a fruit bowl, before eagerly chopping it up into pieces with a knife. You could hear the fire crackling before you saw it, walking back in to meet Azriel in the living room where he stood patiently.
You offered him a slice of the apple, already chewing your own, and he smiled softly, accepting it with a quiet,
“Thank you.”
Before popping it into his mouth, chewing slowly, and savoring it while maintaining eye contact with you the entire time. You felt the bond split open, all sorts of feelings and thoughts both coming from your mind and coming from his, flooding your brain.
You didn’t try to filter your thoughts, no matter how embarrassing they got. He got to have all of you. He seemed to feel the same way.
It was so quick that you barely even noticed him moving, but in a matter of moments and the swirling of shadows, you were both on the bed in a room, his lips moving eagerly against yours as his body slotted into place above you and between your legs. His tongue nudged at your lips, before slipping inside your mouth and dancing with yours, the lingering taste of the apple still there.
Your hips began slowly grinding against his clothes cock, already feeling it through his pants and how it throbbed. You could’ve sworn you even felt a pulse.
He let out a guttural groan at that, only pulling away from your mouth to breathe, taking in hot, heavy pants that had your pussy drooling. Whether he felt it through the bond or smelled your arousal, you could see his eyes widen and nostrils flare, before his lips quirked up at the corners.
“Az, please-“
You whined, already needing more of him. You needed more than friction, you needed touching and contact. He only nodded and began pulling your dress off, surprisingly carefully, his limbs trembling with restraint.
“I know, sweet girl.”
His shirt and pants were soon to go, and his boxers were then tossed to the floor. Your eyes widened as you saw his cock, long and thick as it was, the tip was an angry red and leaking, as soon as it was released it slapped against his stomach. He caught you staring, seeing the slight fear and hesitation in your gaze.
“Are you sure that’s going to..fit?”
You asked, voice more timid and meek than you wanted it to be. Your panties joined the pile of clothes on the floor while his hands began rubbing your tender breasts, kneading them and rubbing your pert nipples between his thumb and finger.
He chuckled lowly at your question.
“It will, I promise. I’m going to use my fingers first to stretch you a bit if that's alright?”
He asked, one finger brushing gently through your folds as he bit his tongue, trying to keep groaning at how wet you already were. Barely any stimulation and you were already writhing under him. So sensitive it was adorable. As much as he wanted to take his time and drag this out, to make you beg and plead until you were a mess, he didn’t have the patience, not now.
You nodded.
“Please.”
The word slipped from between your lips before you could even think, already whimpering as one finger gently began slipping into you. He marveled at how tight you were, thoughts already wandering as his fingers began curling, thumb massaging your clit. As you moaned and cried out, legs already trembling and trying to close, he held them open, settling between them as another finger was scissored into your cunt.
A white, hot heat had begun building in your body before you could begin to process what was happening, moans spilling from your lips like water flowing from a waterfall. More fingers slipped in, his thumb still running circles with just the right amount of pleasure on your clit.
It was too much.
“Az- Az, please, I’m gonna-“
And then it felt like everything exploded.
He watched you fall apart around his fingers, the three of them working in tandem, curling against that spongy spit in your walls as his thumb worked your clit sinfully good. His cock was aching as he tried rubbing it against your leg for at least some friction, which didn’t succeed.
“It’s okay, you’re alright, you’re doing perfect for me, okay?”
He murmured to you, slowly watching as you came down from your high, thighs trembling, tears already drying. Your body wanted more. The frenzy demanded more.
One of your hands wrapped around his waist, pulling him closer, at which he curiously watched. You whined, glancing at his cock and gesturing to it.
“Words, honey. What do you want?”
He asked gently, looking down at you with enough affectionate lust to make you melt on sight as you opened your mouth to speak.
“Your cock. Want it inside.”
You mumbled, cheeks flushed red as you sniffled, giving him a pleading gaze he couldn’t do anything but give in to as he leaned forward, hovering just above your body, his arms braced on his elbows on either side of your head after he’d lined himself up with your entrance.
“Just take a deep breath for me and relax, sweet girl.”
He spoke softly to you, taking a deep breath of his own before nudging the tip in, slowly letting inch after inch go in, watching your expression for any hint of pain and slowing down at any sign of it.
Your face was contorted in a mixture of pain and pleasure, hips bucking up as you gasped at him being pushed deeper, his raw groaning an easy answer to it.
“Cauldron, you’re big.”
You whined against the skin of his chest, nose buried in the nook of his shoulder. He let out a strained laugh, not at you, but at your words.
“I take great pride in it.”
He teased back, before letting out a sigh of relief as he bottomed out.
“Need a minute, hold on-“
You said, breathless as you tried to adjust to the feeling of Azriel splitting you open. You’d never felt anything this big in you before, only having the liberty of your fingers or occasionally a toy doing the trick. He was nestled so deep that it felt like he could easily rearrange your organs if he wanted to.
“Tell me when,”
He managed to say back, every muscle in his sculpted body taught as he held back, that was, until, you began rocking your hips into his after a few minutes longer. His eyes almost rolled back in his head as he, Azriel, Spymaster of Night Court, let out the sluttiest whimper you’d ever heard as he began slowly pumping in and out.
“I’m not going to last,”
He rasped, and after a few minutes he was already about to fall apart completely, the feeling of your- his mate’s tight heat squeezing his cock like a vice grip, had him so, so close already. You managed a loose, breathy laugh.
“Me neither,”
You got out, the pleasure from earlier already building again into a giant wave, your sensitivity now threatening to overtake you as the world turned into a blur of movement, colors, and shadows. Whether by his command or their own free will, you felt the cold tendrils wind around your clit, circling and rubbing while others gave attention to your pert nipples.
What was really your undoing was when some began playing with your wings, stroking right over the insanely sensitive spot that had you arching and writhing beneath Azriel, moans and cries and sobs of pleasure echoing through the room.
As soon as your pussy fluttered around him and clenched, it fully succeeded in milking him of his cum as he came in thick spurts, bucking his hips wildly into you with a groan. It was only after that, that he settled ever so gently on top of you, careful not to crush you with his weight.
The sounds of panting were the only ones for a few minutes before your bodes began screaming for more, more, more…
“Again.”

Hello! I hope you’re having a great week! I saw your requests were open and it’s the perfect time cause my best friend has just started pointing fingers at me and telling me that I’ve been only talking about myself.
I’ve tried to explain to her that I have a habit of gushing about things I like - as I have ADHD and I am an extrovert - I tend to over share sometimes and she isn’t listening to me. I’ve listened to her before and I’ve tried to listen to her more but she hasn’t reached out to me as much and now it’s making me worry if I did something wrong :( So I may be losing my best friend, I don’t know yet.
Sorry that I put that all on you but I promise it ties with my request.
I was thinking of the reader dating Jaime Reyes and he knows how insecure she is of herself being an extrovert and wanting to share her feelings and excitement with others. And her best friend has started blaming her for not looking out for her best friend and it’s taking a toll on the reader - making her feel like she’s a horrible person.
Khaji Da senses that the reader is feeling down and Jaime confronts her. The reader starts asking Jaime if she’s too much for him to handle and if she’s annoying him. Jaime reminds her everything he loves about her and maybe even shows her through some love making? 😳😳 (only if you’re okay with that).
Also I am 20 by the way in case you want to write smut! Also the emoji I was gonna put down for this request is this little ducky 🦆
Thank you for taking the time to read this, I’m sorry that this is so long, I didn’t know how to shorten it at all without it now making sense. 💜😊
The Listener ➜ Jaime Reyes × Extroverted!Female!Reader
READER HAS ADHD!
im sorry for taking so long to release this! this is obviously through Jaime's eyes (mostly), but as someone who is in Jaime's shoes for this fic (my bf has ADHD), Jaime is kind of self inserted & i apologize. i promise, he still very much Jaime
Warnings: might not be 100% accurate, insecurities, like one joke about him being blue beetle, love bombing because i said so, light smut, praise (?), short
He loved hearing you talk. Not only because he loved the sound of your voice, but because of the light in your eyes when you spoke.
The happiness in your voice was enough to make him feel all warm in fuzzy inside because he he loved seeing you happy. He thought he would catch on when something was wrong, but God, did he feel like crap when he didn't notice it.
You came to see him and your silence was loud...at least to Khaji Da as they were the one who noticed it.
"Jaime, something's wrong with her."
Jaime stopped mid-sentence when he heard the AI's words. He looked over at you and tilted his head to the side. "What's wrong?" He asked as he walked towards you before sitting on the couch next to you.
"Nothing." You gave him a soft smile when your eyes met his, but you can tell he wasn't buying it.
"Tell me, love. What's wrong?"
You exhaled sharply and tugged on the bracelet he gifted you. "Am I annoying?"
He furrowed his brows. "What? Why would you think that?"
"My best friend kind of said I was..."
He clenched his fist on his lap. "Kind of or did she?"
"She did. She said I talk too much and that I was too much for you to handle because I'm extroverted and move around too much."
Jaime snorted and took your hand into his. "Do you have any idea how special you are to me? Listening to you speak is the highlight of my day. Trust me, I look forward to it if it's in person or if it's through the phone. Switch from topics all you want, be as introverted as you please, move around as often as you need. I don't care. It's what makes you you and I love you for it."
You squeezed his hand. "Do you really mean that?"
"Eres mi tesoro. Don't ever forget that, you hear me?" (You're my treasure.)
You gave him a small smile. "She's just been saying it for a while, so I felt bad, y'know?"
"Don't feel bad. I love listening to you. I'm your listener, okay?" He poked your nose, causing you to let out a soft laugh. "There it is. That smile that I love so much."
You felt your cheeks warm up before looking away.
He grabbed your chin softly and shook his head. "No. Don't look away." He leaned in and pressed a soft kiss on your lips.
You kissed him back, your arms snaking around his neck as you leaned in closer before sitting on his lap.
His hands rested on your hips before pulling apart from the kiss, peppering small kisses along your jawline, and trailing to your neck.
You tilt your head back to give him more access as your fingers tangle into his hair.
"You're perfect. You'll never be annoying to me. I love every part of you," he whispers against your neck, his hands trailing from your hips to your thighs, and squeezing them gently.
"I love you too, pretty boy."
His eyes met yours, desire written on his face as he gave you a nod. "Your pretty boy."

Whimsical Windbreaker
Sometimes when I post on this blog, it's just with basic information about an item of clothing, how it was styled, what I think of that styling, and where to find it (if it's still available). Sometimes I provide affordable alternatives in the same style for pricier items.
No matter how in-depth the post (or how not, as the case may be), I often find myself wondering at the reasons behind this item of clothing or that, how it was styled, and how it fits into Harvey's personal style ethos. Sometimes, I even draw conclusions about those things based on the information available. But oftentimes, these patterns emerge not via single items of clothing, but by observation over time. And in the meantime, I find myself making a lot of short, pithy posts that are at least 50% pretty pictures.
But sometimes, Harvey hits us with a piece so interesting and unique that it merits an essay all on its own. Such is the case for this gorgeous silk jacket, so strap in for a deep dive!
The Jacket
Harvey first (as far as I can find) wore this jacket in 2021 for a photoshoot with Cooper Sebastian in New York. Since then, he's worn it a few times at various events or outings with friends and family, most notably Gabriel Iglesia's sold-out show at Dodger Stadium in May 2022. It's an eye-catching piece that Harvey typically styles with an all black or dark blue base, preferring to let the jacket speak for itself.
This silk men's windbreaker from Gucci has a cream base color with a vibrant teal and black art print by Freya Hartas featuring flying squirrels, rabbits, and a border of dancing beetles. The jacket has a zip closure at the front with gold-tone hardware, welt pockets at the waist and interior, elasticized cuffs and hem, and a spread collar. It is fully lined and was originally part of a 3-part set that included a matching top and shorts (each sold separately, of course). The jacket originally retailed for $6,995, but can sometimes now be found online for resale for as little as $495 (or as much as $2,400) on sites such as TheRealReal and eBay, as can the other items in the set.
The Collection
This jacket was part of Gucci's 2020 "Ouverture of Something That Never Ended" collection and campaign, released as part of that year's Guccifest. The campaign included a 7-part miniseries directed by Gus Van Sant and featuring multiple celebrity cameos, with the goal being to present the collection in a pandemic-conscious format. (Source)
You can view a promo for it on Youtube.
The vibes of the campaign are sun-washed and nostalgic, evoking some ephemeral simpler time with everything from the 1975 Minnie Riperton hit "Lovin' You" playing throughout, to the shots of models in retro preppy fashions meeting at soda shops, driving in classic cars, and going to the drive-in for date night.
At the same time, however, the promo seems to want to depict a better past--or perhaps a better and simpler future?--with a racially diverse cast and much queering of gender presentation.
It's a nice thought--that the simple joys of life never ended, and that we might one day reach a point where we've truly progressed socially and politically, while also learning to unplug and enjoy that simplicity with our fellow humans. It's easy to see why these images of such togetherness, while not truly reflective of our present or past, would have been attractive in late 2020--a time when we were all being viscerally reminded of just how much we need other people.
The collection itself leans just as vintage and retro as the promo, incorporating elements from every decade from the 1950s to the 1990s--all those years we tend to think of with a rosy wash of "things were better then" (no matter how untrue that may be).
There is something studiously informal and both/and about the collection: its lookbook features images of models in outfits that evoke androgyny and gender play, but also a conversation between casual and dressy, luxury and thrift (or the appearance of thrift), quiet and busy. The collection overall leans heavily 70s, but with 50s prep school elements, and overtone of grunge, and the barest suggestion of the modern light academia aesthetic. The models as depicted are the embodiment of every quirky character in a classic John Hughes film, brought to life in photos that, regardless of subject or setting, all share that distinct desaturated sepia Polaroid cast.
Who is Freya Hartas?
Freya Hartas is an illustrator based in the UK who specializes in children's books. Her work features anthropomorphized animals, cuddly monsters, fairies, dragons, and the children who often stumble upon them. Her style is colorful, whimsical, and deeply nostalgic, reminiscent of the illustrated fairy tale books I loved as a child. At the same time, the subject matter she gravitates toward is very modern, featuring diverse characters and themes of self-discovery, self-acceptance, and empowerment. I genuinely could have stared at her illustrations for hours.
Her contribution to "Ouvertures" was a set of limited-edition items featuring her fantastical creature illustrations and the Gucci logo. This is part of Gucci's longer commitment to showcasing emerging artists in their fashion. While the items are no longer available, the illustrations are gorgeous and worth a look.
Harvey's Personal Style
One of the recurring themes in Harvey's personal style is his love of color and, for lack of a better term, whimsy. Bold or abstract prints and bright colors have been mainstays for Harvey since his early MTV days, and teal is one of the colors he revisits often--such as in his most recent Siriano collaboration for Pride Across America, this iconic photo from an interview with The Advocate in 2022, or even as far back as this Palm Springs road trip photoshoot with Chubstr from 2016.
Teal is such a vibrant color, rife with contradictions. In color theory, teal carries connotations of calm, tranquility, and healing. In animation, it often denotes electricity, magic, and power.
In fashion, it's a versatile statement color that transcends seasons and doesn't so much scream "look at me" as simply demand that you do by existing. It stands out even in an otherwise colorful crowd, naturally drawing the eye. Like red, it's the kind of color that can stand on its own, or as part of a glorious rainbow. It's such a Harvey color in that way, isn't it?
Harvey has also been open over the years in his admiration and support for visual artists, and has even partnered with independent artists to promote his projects and create merch on his website.
So it's no surprise that he would be drawn to an item like this jacket: unusual, colorful, a bit whimsical. Something youthful and fun, but also a serious collector's item for any lover of fashion.
And frankly, the kind of stylistic choice that makes me sit back and go "oh yeah...that's why I wanted to dedicate a whole blog to this one guy's personal style. That's exactly why."
Update: Freya Hartas is on tumblr! You can follow her and see more of her gorgeous illustrations at @freyahartas !

Kafkaryan, The Wrath Of Cod
June 2024 Progress Report
TLDR: Unfortunately we had to push back our planned release date again. We don't have a new date yet, but we're trying our best to bring you Octopus City Blues as soon as humanly possible. We're very sorry about that. The rest of the update will go over some of the things we've been working on and provide additional context for the delay.
Progress
Starting in April, Marina (benevolent tentacle artist) and I (Firas, malevolent snail) significantly changed the way we work. Previously, art and development were mostly done independently and we communicated on a weekly or biweekly basis. We switched to a virtual office kind of setup where we dedicate fixed hours to working together every day. It's been going great so far and we feel much more motivated and productive.
Our current target is the Robot Graveyard, the lawless wasteland at the base of Gold Tower. We're mainly working on the remaining interior locations such as the Conman's shop or the cyborg club.
By the way, we recently released yet another demo update, based on all the quality-of-life and interaction improvements made since the previous one. These include:
🦔 Kaf the Hedgehog is now 33% faster and has 100% more walking frames!
🖼️ Intuitive top-of-the-line settings menu to crank up your sim's colors to 11.
🎨 New text background colors to make your eyes bleed. From the grimy "Jungle" to the ominous "Caput Mortuum".
💬 Switch between the gossip and item menu modes like a pro using Q/E keys or the gamepad's shoulder buttons.
🎮 Say goodbye to gamepad confusion! The simulation will reliably remember the most recently used controller.
🍄 Beetles crave mushrooms. Drop the right item in the plaza and watch the little critters go!
😷 You no longer have to "touch" dirty objects or people to interact with them. Standing close by is sufficient.
🤖 Sacrificing Mom to science will pay off sooner.
🪲 And numerous other fixes, copy editing changes, and a host of new potential bugs for you to discover!
I'm also happy to present one of several music tracks that the newest addition to our team, Shannon (omnibenevolent troubadour), has been working on:
youtube
There's a lot more happening behind the scenes. For example, Julia (unambivalent wordsmith) went over and helped improve large portions of the script, while Karl (ambivalent doodler) is practicing card tricks.
The Delay
Octopus City Blues has had a long and rocky journey over the years, so I apologize if the following is too long and boring. Nevertheless, you all deserve an honest explanation for the delays. Back in late 2021 when I was pitching the project to the Midgame Fund, the plan looked something like this:
Early 2022: Demo play testing
Late 2022: Release of Act 1 in Early Access.
Mid 2023: Steam Next Fest demo
Late 2023 / Early 2024: Release of Act 2
Later in 2024: KS reward fulfillment, possible localization and console ports
After getting funded, the helpful investors at Midgame Fund advised against Early Access and recommended releasing both acts together. Much of 2022 was spent on discussions, planning, and extensive play testing that took place in two main rounds. The testing feedback showed us that we still had much to do, particularly when it came to guiding the players.
By early 2023 we were struggling to follow the original plan as we addressed all the testing feedback. That's why I decided to cut a lot of planned content and rewrite the story so that it no longer had two acts. The original acts were separated by a 10-year gap, which would've required a lot of art editing and writing completely new responses for every character.
The next play testing round coincided with the Indigo event. Even after all the changes made, some players were still struggling with certain parts or running into bugs. That's why we decided to participate in the October Steam Next Fest edition instead of the June one. The release date was pushed back to Q1 2024.
The Next Fest event itself was a great success. After years of neglecting marketing, we used 2023 to promote the project and make it more viable financially. On the other hand, the event left us with even more feedback, some of which we were still addressing in January (2024). The release date was pushed back to Q2.
In early 2024 the Q2 release plan was still feasible. However, things temporarily took a turn for the worse after our last update. The first roadblock was due to real life developments and personal circumstances that impacted the availability of key team members. Thankfully, everything is back to normal now.
A more general problem is that the more we get done, the more work we end up creating for ourselves. The complex branching quest design means that the amount of testing needed can grow exponentially. Automated testing and play testing rounds can only take us so far.
The next obstacle had to do with the 2023 rewrite. Taking a story with many characters and intertwined elements and completely rewriting major parts of it turned out to be much trickier than expected. Some major plot elements simply didn't work in the new framework, and I had to make additional changes to improve the story's overall pacing and consistency.
At first I thought we could still release the main parts, and then slowly restore some content after release. That would've meant early adopters and our biggest supporters wouldn't get the complete intended experience. There are also many more things we'd like to tackle after release (Kickstarter rewards, localization, porting) instead of adding more content.
To be clear, there are some things that we still plan to add after release (as free DLC). In particular, there are the arcade games and the quests related to them. While not part of the main story, they were in our original pitch (and much of the art is already done).
All of this brings us to our current plan. The story is still in one act, but some previously cut areas and quests will be restored. As mentioned in the previous section, we've adopted a new way of working since April and have been slowly adding the remaining areas and characters to the simulation. While things look promising, it's hard to tell what will happen tomorrow or if additional play testing will require even more changes.
OCB is something that particularly benefits from these play testing rounds, because the more we can anticipate the player's actions (e.g. trying to combine the knife and baby items), the more fun and immersive the experience feels. Obviously, we can never get rid of every bug or address all feedback before release. That's why we'll just have to find the right balance.
We still have to finish the following parts: Graveyard (in-progress), Big Beef, Turkeys, and the ending. Of those, Big Beef is the most involved one. I changed the planned release date on Steam to simply 2024 because that's our goal, but please keep in mind that it's not a release date either. We'll only announce a concrete release date once all of these areas are done and work primarily shifts to testing and polishing.
If you've made it this far, thank you for taking the time to read all of that! We remain as committed to this project as we were on day one, and we're genuinely trying our best as flawed and naively optimistic humanoids. We owe it all to your continued support and understanding.

● 👏
Synopsis: Harbinger walks into the Monitor's sanctum as he continues testing young Alexander Luthor. Luthor is aging at an accelerated rate, and is now the physical age of an adolescent boy. The Monitor discovers he is composed of both positive matter and antimatter, and believes that this composite life form may hold the key towards stopping the Crisis. Harbinger, still under the influence of a dark, mysterious entity, leaves the Monitor's satellite and reports to her new master.
On Earth-One in the 30th century, the Flash races through the streets desperately attempting to halt a series of natural disasters. He sees a wave of pure antimatter spreading outwards in the distance. He vibrates his molecules at super-speed sending himself backwards through time.
In the 20th century, the antimatter wave has reached Earth-One and it slowly begins to dissolve everything in its path. The Teen Titans team up with the Outsiders to save as many citizens of New York as possible. Batman and Superman arrive as well to lend a hand. Suddenly Batman sees the Flash appear before his eyes. The Flash screams in terror and quickly disappears.
In outer space, Brainiac's brain-ship surveys the progress of the antimatter wave. He logically deduces that in order to preserve his own life, he must help to save the Multiverse. Brainiac flies off to find his old partner, Lex Luthor.
Meanwhile, Blue Beetle, Doctor Polaris and Geo-Force arrive in Markovia in the spring of 1944. Markovia is currently under Nazi occupation and the Nazis attempt to secure the Monitor's energy tower. The American military forces known as Easy Company, the Losers and the Haunted Tank are present as well. While the heroes engage the Nazis, they must also contend with a horde of Demon-Shadows. The Demon Shadows succeed in killing several war time soldiers including Johnny Cloud, Captain Storm, Gunner and Sarge.
On Earth-AD, Superman, Dawnstar, Solovar and Kamandi stand by helplessly as they watch the sky turn the color of blood and lightning storms erupt all around them. Solovar, finally succumbs to his recent injuries and dies in Kamandi's arms.
Meanwhile, Cyborg, Green Lantern, Psimon and Firebrand materialize in the town of Coyote, Texas in the year 1879. They meet up with several Southwestern heroes including, Nighthawk, Scalphunter, Bat Lash, Johnny Thunder and Jonah Hex. The two disparate groups join forces and locate another one of the Monitor's towers.
However, the destructive wave of antimatter that the Monitor warned off strikes the Earth at all time periods simultaneously. While the other heroes fight against more Demon-Shadows, Nighthawk is consumed by the antimatter wave.
Across time in the 30th century, the Legion of Super-Heroes shares a similar tragedy. While saving innocent civilians in England, Kid Psycho falls prey to the white energy wall.
Back on the Monitor's satellite, Harbinger returns. Consumed by the influence of her new master, she releases a blast of energy at the Monitor.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will soon make a splash on home video as the final DC Extended Universe flick looks set to become available on home video in time for the spring.
Per ComicBook.com, T he Lost Kingdom will be available on Blu-ray, DVD and 4K UHD on Mar. 12. An exclusive clip from the home release was included in the report, showing Arthur Curry (Jason Momoa) and Orm Marius (Patrick Wilson) attempting an unlikely escape. The news comes after it was confirmed the Aquaman sequel would make its digital debut earlier than anticipated as the DCEU blockbuster becomes available for streaming on Jan. 23, just over a month after it opened in theaters.
The home video edition of The Lost Kingdom boasts several bonus features, including Atlantean Blood Is Thicker Than Water, exploring the dynamic between Arthur and Orm. Along with the digital release, the home video version also includes a behind-the-scenes documentary with director James Wan exploring how The Lost Kingdom came together, a featurette chronicling the Black Manta (Yahya Abdul Mateen II) and other tidbits about key locations and sequences in the sequel.
The DCEU Ends With Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom
The Lost Kingdom marked an up-and-down end to the ill-fated DCEU, following up from the commercially successful Aquaman, which grossed over $1.15 billion worldwide. The Lost Kingdom has earned over $378 million in global ticket sales against a budget of up to $215 million, with the film reportedly needing to make more than $400 million at the box office to break even. Thanks to its overseas appeal, The Lost Kingdom easily surpassed all other DCEU films released in 2023, including Shazam! Fury of the Gods, The Flash and Blue Beetle. The sequel is closing in on Black Adam, which is next on the DCEU box-office charts at $393 million.
Also featuring Amber Heard, Dolph Lundgren and Nicole Kidman, The Lost Kingdom was panned by critics, receiving a 34% critical rating, though 81% of audience members liked the movie. The likelihood of Aquaman 3 seems low considering fan demand to see the film series has diminished. Wan insisted fan demand had to be high to ensure a potential threequel came to fruition.
The Aquaman franchise is also in jeopardy given the potential of Jason Momoa switching characters in the new DCU. Momoa has long been linked to playing a live-action Lobo in the DCU and has long been a fan of the comic book character, admitting he wants to portray the chainsmoking mercenary.
Bonus Features Revealed
The home video release will contain the following bonus features:
Finding the Lost Kingdom: Go behind the scenes as director James Wan reveals how he and the cast and crew pulled off their biggest endeavor yet, an epic sequel to the largest grossing film in the history of DC.
Aquaman: Worlds Above and Below: When the filmmakers set out to create a sequel that eclipsed the original in scale and scope, they knew they would have to send Arthur and the rest of the cast to all kinds of new wild and wonderful worlds both above and below the sea.
It's a Manta World: Black Manta is more powerful than ever now that he has discovered the Lost Kingdom of Necrus and taken possession of the Black Trident. From inspiration to execution, filmmakers reveal how they leveled Black Manta up to the realm of supervillains.
Necrus, The Lost Black City: Ages ago the great battle for the earth took place here, in this legendary lost Atlantean city. Discover how the filmmakers created the Black City from its "surface city" concept and its inhabitants: Undead Necrusians (Zombies), to its execution.
Escape from the Deserter World: From idea to execution, explore how the filmmakers created this barren desert landscape and the Deserter Prison, how its creatures and inhabitants were brought to life, and how they planned and executed the daring Orm "breakout" sequence.
Brawling at Kingfish's Lair: The Citadel is the last frontier of the ocean, a deep trench filled with sunken old ships, stacked high like a rusty city. From concept to completion, discover Kingfish's Lair, a bar within, where the worst of the worst hang out.
Oh TOPO!: The Tactical Observation and Pursuit Operative Octopus is a living legend and all-time fan favorite. Director James Wan and the filmmakers discuss the decision behind bringing TOPO back to the sequel and its promotion to Arthur's on-screen sidekick.
The Lost Kingdom hits digital on Jan. 23 and will be available via home video on Mar. 12.

Before audiences get to those films and series, however, there is a matter of this year’s crop movies, starting with Shazam! Fury of the Gods, coming March 17, and continuing with The Flash (June 16), Blue Beetle (Aug. 18), and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (Dec. 25).
The duo are high on the quartet, made by the previous film regime and under the aegis of DC Films, run by former head Walter Hamada. Gunn calls The Flash, directed by Andy Muschietti, “probably one of the greatest superhero movies ever made.”
He also said the four leads of those films could potentially continue playing their leading roles in DCU projects down the line. “There is nothing that prohibits that from happening,” said Gunn.
DCU
Creature Commandos: An animated seven episode series, written by Gunn, that is already in production. Originally a team of classic monsters assembled to fight Nazis, this is a modern take on the concept. The voice actors have yet to be cast but the executives are looking to find people who can voice the animated characters and also portray the live-action versions when the anti-heroes to show up in movies and shows.
Waller: A spin-off of Gunn’s own HBO Max hit series, Peacemaker, Viola Davis will return as the ruthless and morally ambiguous head of a government task force. It is being written by Christal Henry (Watchmen) and Jeremy Carver, the creator of the Doom Patrol TV series.
Superman: Legacy: The movie featuring the Man of Steel that Gunn is writing and may direct, although no commitments on that end have been made. While the two previous titles are meant to be “aperatifs,” in Safran’s words, Superman is the true kick off for the duo’s DCU plans. “It’s not an origin story,” Safran said. “It focuses on Superman balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing. He is the embodiment of truth justice and the American way. He is kindness in a world that thinks that kindness as old-fashioned.” A release date of July 11, 2025 has been penciled in.
Lanterns: Greg Berlanti’s long-in-the-works Green Lanterns TV series has been scrapped and the duo have parted ways with the longtime DC series steward. In its place will be a new take on the space cops with power rings. “Our vision for this is very much in the vein of True Detective,” Safran described. “It’s terrestrial-based.” It will feature prominent Lantern heroes Hal Jordan and John Stewart and is one of the most important shows they have in development. “This plays a really big role in leading into the main story we are telling across film and TV.”
The Authority: a movie based on a team of superheroes with rather extreme methods of protecting the planet that first originated in the late 1990s under an influential imprint known as Wildstorm, run by artist and now head of DC publishing, Jim Lee. “One of the things of the DCU is that it’s not just a story of heroes and villains,” said Gunn. “Not every film and TV show is going to be about good guy vs. bad guy, giant things from the sky comes and good guy wins. There are white hats, black hats and grey hats.” Added Safran: “They are kinda like Jack Nicholson in A Few Good Men. They know that you want them on the wall. Or at least they believe that.”
Paradise Lost: The duo describe this HBO Max series as a Game of Thrones-style drama set on the all-female island that is Wonder Woman’s birthplace, Themyscira, filled with political intrigue and scheming between power players. It takes place before the events of the Wonder Woman films.
The Brave and the Bold: “This is the introduction of the DCU Batman,” said Gunn. “Of Bruce Wayne and also introduces our favorite Robin, Damian Wayne, who is a little son of a bitch.” The movie will take inspiration from the now-classic Batman run written by Grant Morrison that introduced Batman to a son he never knew existed: a murderous tween raised by assassins. “It’s a very strange father-and-son story.”
Booster Gold: an HBO Max series based on a unique and lower-tiered hero created in 1986. Safran said of the series, “It’s about a loser from the future who uses basic future technology to come back to today and pretend to be a superhero.” Gunn described it as “imposter syndrome as superhero.”
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow: Taking its cues from the recent Tom King-written mini-series, this movie project promises to have a different take than what most think of when the idea of Superman’s cousin comes to mind. “We will see the difference between Superman, who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from the time he was an infant, versus Supergirl, raised on a rock, a chip off of Krypton, and who watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life and then come to Earth. She is much more hardcore and not the Supergirl we’re used to.”
Elseworlds
The Batman sequel: Pattinson will continue to portray the Dark Knight in at least one more crime saga movie directed by Matt Reeves. That movie, the executives revealed, will be released Oct. 3, 2025 and is being titled The Batman Part II.

Really happy so far with what James Gunn and Peter Safran revealed of the first part of the new DCU slate!!! :D Chapter 1 is going to be called “Gods and Monsters”. Nice to see that this will have no affect on Matt Reeves’ movies/shows, “Joker 2″, the 2nd “Constantine” films, if the CW keeps any of their DC shows for next season, and the other cartoon series as they’ll all be branded as “DC Elseworlds” from now on. They also said that “Superman and Lois” will be able to go on till at least 2025 when their movie comes out but it’s The CW’s decision and they could get a final season next season if this one isn’t written to work that way. Also they will be keeping some of the current actors after “The Flash” movie creates this new DCU with Gal Galdot’s Wonder Woman, Jason Momoa’s Aquaman, Zachary Levi’s Shazam, the “Blue Beetle” cast, Voila Davis’ Amanda Waller, and the entire “Peacemaker” cast all being confirmed to be a part of this new universe. They haven’t decided yet about Ezra Miller but I have a feeling they might just bring in Wally West as another Flash going by the new slate. So here’s my thoughts on the new movies/shows in order of how they’ll be released though “Peacemaker” season 2 is also now a part of it. The shows too will all be on HBO Max.
Creature Commandos (TV): This one is new to me as it’s a group of characters similar to the Universal Monsters that band together. It’ll be an animated show too but the actors who voice them will also play them in live action so that will be cool and it will fully connect to the other movies, shows, and games.
Waller (TV): This is the show James has been working on about Amanda Waller and it’ll include Viola Davis and fully connect to “Peacemaker”.
Superman Legacy (movie): This was the Superman movie already revealed with a new actor to be cast and we know he’ll be in his 20s and trying to live his life as a journalist and as Superman. It’s been dated now for July 2025.
Lanterns (TV): This is a new version of the “Green Lantern” show that was originally in the works from Greg Berlanti but is now being fully by Gunn and Safran. Very cool that Hal Jordan and John Stewart are going to be the leads of the first season though others will appear.
The Authority (movie): This is another I don’t know that much about but it sounds cool. I do recognize a few characters the mentioned from the comics and having appeared on shows like “Stargirl” and “Legends of Tomorrow”.
Paradise Lost (TV): This one sounds really cool as it’s a prequel about the Amazons before Diana was born. They even compared it to “Games to Thrones”. Sounds like it will still connect to Gal’s version too.
Batman & Robin: The Brave and the Bold (movie): This one got me excited as it’s another Batman movie but the Robin in this is his actual son Damian Wayne!!! :D They also confirmed the rest of the Batfamily will be in this too and starting their own movies connected of them. With Damian already here this means that Dick/Nightwing, Barbara/Batgirl/Oracle, and at least Jason/Red Hood should be around as well as Alfred. Possibly could include Tim/Red Robin, Stephanie/Spoiler, and Cassandra/Black Bat as James said these characters have been long neglected by the Batman films. Depends on what Reeves is doing too but I think they’ll be fine with Dick already as an adult here and if he’s a still a teen in Reeves’ movies/shows. They will be casting a new Bruce/Batman, so curious to find out who that will be. They also dated “The Batman 2″ for October 2025 too.
Booster Gold (TV): This has also been in the works for years and he too showed up on “Legends of Tomorrow” so it’s finally happening.
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow (movie): This will be cool to see too. Though not sure if Kara will still be played by Sasha Calle like in “The Flash” movie or if it’ll be a new actress as Sasha’s seems to be tied to Henry Cavill’s. They didn’t mention Sasha either as staying so might be another recast.
Swamp Thing (movie): This one has me so excited!!! :D I’ve loved Swamp Thing for years and that he’ll be in the movies again and tied to this new DCU. It’s going to be darker than the other movies and shows listed here and end the first chapter leading into the 2nd chapter.
Overall I’m really excited and glad they’re doing this more like Marvel now with such a larger plan and focusing on getting the scripts done first before they film. Also looking forward to finding out the castings as this is going to be a lot of actors.

'After a monumental opening weekend, the success of Barbie and Oppenheimer is clear for all to see, but Hollywood may learn the wrong lessons. Both Barbie and Oppenheimer have been hugely successful in their own right, with their opening weekend making $511 between them. Oppenheimer has made over $700 million so far in its box office run, while Barbie became Warner Bros.'s highest-grossing movie in U.S. history, reaching over $1 billion. Each movie has seen individual success, but the organic marketing campaign really helped push and promote both movies. With the films heavily contrasting, it made audiences want to see both, which many did on the same day, creating Barbenheimer.
Despite this triumph for both films, the lessons that Hollywood learns from Barbenheimer are a concern. The way in which both movies managed to work simultaneously is a bit of an anomaly and not something that will prove to be a viable marketing strategy in the future. A level of caution should be taken about release dates and big movies overlapping, even if Oppenheimer and Barbie managed to thrive despite releasing on the same day. There are many reasons why Barbenheimer worked, and as a result, it is important studios learn the right lessons rather than set upcoming movies up for failure.
Why Barbenheimer's $245 Million Bet Massively Paid Off After A Year Of Hype
Barbie and Oppenheimer have made massive profits compared to their sizable budget, emphasizing the gamble taken on these films paid off. With a $100 million budget, Oppenheimer has smashed box office landmarks. They include the $700 million grossed already, becoming the highest-grossing R-rated movie of the year and the highest-grossing World War II film of all time. Likewise, Barbie's $145 million budget has seen the film gross over $1 billion and compete for the highest-grossing film of the year with The Super Mario Bros. Movie. While both films had large budgets, the hype generated around Barbenheimer helped them become two of 2023's biggest movies.
The $245 million bet paid off, with audiences having plenty to invest in. Both films have an impressive cast, with Margot Robbie and Cillian Murphy big enough stars to take leading roles and help sell tickets. Christopher Nolan is one of Hollywood's biggest directors, while Greta Gerwig has had her fair share of quality movies in recent years, earning a level of trust from viewers. The opposite nature of these movies also helped drive an organic marketing campaign that was done largely on social media without planning from studios. It took a variety of factors to go right, but Barbenheimer proved to be a huge success for all involved.
Barbenheimer's Success Won't Be Easily Replicated (& Hollywood Shouldn't Try To)
After seeing the success of Barbenheimer, Hollywood will be eager to replicate it, but this is the wrong lesson to learn from the triumph. With the cast, crews, and audience marketing being so special, Barbenheimer isn't the type of success story that comes around all too often. While an annual summer double bill sounds fun on paper, both movies were high-quality films crafted for their own audiences. The Barbenheimer campaign certainly helped, but both Barbie and Oppenheimer would likely have found success if they had been released separately. Trying to manufacture films to release at the same time will detract from their individual nature and make them lose their longevity.
Barbie proved to have long-term success, with Blue Beetle dethroning Barbie for no.1 spot at the box office after Gerwig's film spent four weeks on top. Oppenheimer has shared equal lasting power, especially at Imax screens. The originality and quality of these films helped sell a double-bill weekend. However, trying this yearly with any pair of movies would likely be a disaster. Had current internet culture been around in 2008, The Dark Knight and Mamma Mia may have had a similar weekend to Barbenheimer. That is due to the quality nature of both films and their opposite styles, not just because they both released on the same weekend.
Barbenheimer Proves Huge Franchises Are No Longer The Key To Huge Release Weekends, But Will Hollywood Learn This Lesson?
Big franchises have dominated the box office for a long time. It is why we have seen so many reboots and sequels, yet Barbenheimer has proven this is not the only recipe for success. Marvel's Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantamania reviewed badly, and The Flash's box office failure repeated unwanted history for DC, yet both Barbie and Oppenheimer thrived. Barbie is a big brand, and Christopher Nolan is arguably a brand on his own, but neither of these films had previous cinematic experience and managed to dethrone the superhero powerhouses. This is a clear sign that franchises aren't the key to big opening weekends.
Mattel has announced upcoming toy movies after Barbie, highlighting that Hollywood is already not learning from Barbenheimer's success. The reason so many people went to see Oppenheimer and Barbie was because of their uniqueness and originality. Barbie's success didn't come because people craved films about toys and wanted to see more Mattel films. It was because they wanted to see something different. Rather than a Barbie 2, people want to see "The Next Barbie," the next original movie that is a must-see because it hasn't been done before. If Barbenheimer has shown anything, it is that Hollywood needs to be more original, not that it needs more franchises and sequels.'

I have a confession. But first I want to emphasize that none of us is perfect, y’all without sin etc. Everybody has some secret shame that if exposed should be penalized with nothing more stringent than forgiveness. Except this. This is worse. Okay here goes (deep breath):
I DON’T THINK THERE WERE ANY OSCAR SNUBS.
Nope. Not even Barbie. Despite Greta Gerwig’s masterful shepherding of what is so far Mattel’s greatest movie, if Zone of Interest (which I haven’t seen yet) is a dog, I’ll give Jonathan Glazer’s place to May/December’s Todd Haynes. Ditto for Robie who was almost perfect (But what’s up with her still using the Harley Quinn accent?). If Nyad isn’t up to snuff I’ll just slide in Past Lives’ Greta Lee.
It was that kind of year. Lots of good movies and for a change most of them got at least some kind of Oscar nod. But. There were those orphans and also-rans that came up all the way short. No nominations. Let’s honor them, okay?
In other words, it’s time for KEVROC’S ANNUAL BEST MOVIES THAT DIDN’T GET EVEN ONE LOUSY NOMINATION list!
Asteroid City. Wes Anderson had a short-lived Oscar vogue in the last decade with Best Picture nominations for Moonrise Kingdom in 2013 and Grand Budapest Hotel in 2014, but this year the consensus was that this deadpan dramatization of the tension between postwar optimism and post-nuclear domination which defined the latter half of The American Century was just a collection of the director’s tropes instead of a humanist masterpiece. It should have been nominated if for no other reason than to give a push to “Dear Alien (Who Art in Heaven)” for the Best Song award it deserves. (But hey, Wes got a Best Live Action Short nod for The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar).
A Good Person. Zach Braff’s directorial rep as the King of Emo, not to mention an early release date kept Oscar voters from this story of two addicts struggling not to relapse in the face of their lives’ biggest tragedy, that gave Morgan Freeman his best role in years and reaffirmed Florence Pugh’s status as the best actor of this decade.
All of Us Strangers. A simple dreamlike plot (a depressed gay man meets his soulmate, and simultaneously gets to see his long-dead parents) becomes a soul-wrenching mystical reverie brought to life by Claire Foy and Jamie Bell as the parents, Paul Mescal as the troubled soulmate and Andrew Scott, who gives a performance so exposed and vulnerable that if it went any further he’d literally shed his skin.
Monica. A trans woman (Trace Lysette) reconnects with her family and is taken for a nurse by her demented, homophobic mother (Patricia Clarkson). It sounds like Joan Crawford doing an Almodovar film but director Andrea Pallaoro goes for subtlety and nuance over camp drama in this quiet gem. Lysette should have been talked about more.
Air. This crazy-entertaining celebration of the marketing synergy of Michael Jordan and Nike got Oscar-overlooked because a whole movie devoted to a celebrity spokesperson deal is maybe just a little too on-the-nose. But it had great work by Chris Messina, Jason Bateman, a Macchiavellian Viola Davis and especially Matt Damon who might be too good an actor to ever win an Oscar for it.
Passages. Ira Sachs examination of why-good-people-love-irredeemable-pricks is a high point in the careers of Adele Exarchoupoulos and Ben Wishaw but was a breakout star vehicle for Franz Rogowski playing the kind of prick who has a one-night stand and is so smitten he can’t wait to tell his husband all about it.
Blue Beetle. You know the superhero movie is in trouble when this crackerjack film about a reluctant Latino champion of his family and community (and whose sidekicks include a Zapatista-veteran grandmother) could only find a fraction of the audience it deserved. And the line “Now is when we cry” made me cry.
Strays. All apologies to Poor Things and American Fiction, but this profane and scatological tribute to couch-humping, trash-eating dogshit producing (and eating) canis lupus familiaris was the funniest movie of the year.
Bottoms. Even beating out this gloriously tasteless and bracingly absurdist tale of high school lesbians who start a fight club to meet chicks that would win the Jean Hersholt humanitarian award if they renamed it for John Waters.
Taylor Swift: The Eras tour. The Academy’s prejudice against performance films is understandable. Certainly the struggle against dictators in Uganda and Invaders in the Ukraine are more important than a superstar juggernaut’s latest step on her way to world domination. But I’m not the only one who became convinced that the juggernaut was a real (and major) artist. And flashing on the closeups of random fans experiencing pure ecstasy was as moving as anything I saw this year.

Also for anyone who doesn’t obsessively stalk news about things like I do apparently Kory will take on a friendly mentor role to Jaime in the Blue Beetle: Graduation Day mini. It’s in a new city called Palmera.

And these are the preview pages they showed.

MEET SAGE
sage celeste harlow ( born 8th July 2002 ) is an American actress, singer-songwriter and dancer. She is the younger sister of rapper jack harlow, has another brother by the name of clayborn harlow, is also known for her association with photographer urban wyatt, is the longtime girlfriend of cobra kai star xolo maridueña and is best friends with newcomer whitney peak.
The youngest Harlow first made a name for herself when competed in the thirteenth season of So You Think You Can Dance and came in third place when she was only 13.
Her fame didn’t stop there, while the girl may be one of the best dancers of this generation she’s also a gifted actress. The world truly discovered this when the hit Netflix show Stranger Things debuted on the streaming service.
Critics have repeatedly said that her performance as the whimsical Margo Harrington on the show has constantly managed to go beyond their expectations. From the first season alone, Sage has proven that she doesn’t only have impressive dance skills but is also apart of the group of actors that will be the future of the film industry. She along with the Duffer Brothers have teased how dark season 4 will be for all the characters.
Apart from playing one of the most beloved characters on the critically acclaimed streaming show, one of her other most prominent roles which also happened to be her debut role would have to be her role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Persephone Thorsdottir. She was casted as the demigoddess in 2011s Thor. She’s continued to appear as the same character in all the Thor films, Avengers Endgame and is set to play a major role in Thor: Love and Thunder. According to rumours there may be a movie or series based of her character coming up.
Most people assumed that acting and dancing would be where the teenager would limit herself but Sage has proven to be a tripple threat. In 2017 the teenager dropped her first single One Day which blew up on YouTube, she then continued to drop singles and even an EP in 2019 but gained more recognition in the music industry when You Broke Me First released.
It doesn’t end there, apart from being one of the few tripple threats in the entertainment industry, Sage is also well known for her loving sibling relationship with the rising rapper Jack Harlow and for her relationship with the Cobra Kai and soon to be Blue Beetle star Xolo Maridueña.
Over the years as Sage gained for attention people loved to see her interactions between the rapper and his ‘baby’ sister. Over various interviews the two have mentioned many time their incredible relationship and how they’re grateful for it.
As for her puppy love relationship with Hispanic actor, their friendship started when Harlow was 16 and the officially became a couple a year later in 2020. Since then the couple have kept their relationship pretty private but

Sorry if there’s tons and it’s a pain to list them, but I’m curious, which comics are you currently reading? Like which series are on your pull list, even if you’ve not necessarily caught up completely
OK so before the summer started I was up to date on So Many Things but with my job over the summer being very busy and then things being complicated irl for me since then (mostly medical stuff, both my own and elsewhere in my family, most notably with my uncle passing away a few weeks ago) it's caused me to be specifically like 4-5 issues behind on several things.
[Also, my actual 'i purchase these physically' pull list is much smaller than this whole list, but I think you're asking more about what I've read than just what I've bought.]
gonna put this under a readmore because it's long lmao
To start with ones i'm up to date on/mostly up to date on (like only 1 or 2 issues behind at most)
Batgirls
Batman
Batman Incorporated
Superman: Son of Kal-El
Tim Drake: Robin
Batman: The Knight
Dark Crisis on Infinite Earths (and trying to read the related tie-in oneshots too)
Dark Crisis: Young Justice
Dark Knights of Steel
DC vs. Vampires (though I no longer really want to read this one after the controversy about Otto Schmidt came to light recently, but I'd read all of it that was released before I become aware of that situation)
The New Champion of Shazam!
Poison Ivy
Wonder Woman Historia: The Amazons
Plus some recently finished series that are also in that category:
Nubia: Queen of the Amazons
Robin (2021)
Task Force Z
Then ones I'm further behind on (so more in that 4-5 issues range or I'll specifically note if I think necessary):
Batman/Superman: World's Finest
Batman: Urban Legends
Detective Comics (I just haven't had a chance to read it since Ram V took over, but I've read all of Tamaki's run)
The Flash
I Am Batman
Nightwing
Wonder Woman (I haven't read any of it since Trial of the Amazons ended, but I've read everything from Infinite Frontier-ToTA)
Batman vs. Robin (I haven't actually had a chance to read this one yet but I like, have it on my physical pull list thus own the issues)
Monkey Prince
Then they haven't started yet but I have Blue Beetle: Graduation Day and Stargirl: The Lost Children on my pull list for when they start, and once release dates for Kon's book from Round Robin come out i'll be adding that to my pull as well.
Thennnn ones I am not at all up to date with but do intend to get to at some point:
Action Comics (I fell off right when Warworld saga started which was like over a full year ago so it goes here)
Sword of Azrael
Multiversity: Teen Justice
Anyways it is very funny to me that internally I keep being like 'ugh i'm barely up to date with anything rn :(' when that's not even a little bit true. there's just so many books and i wish i consistently had the time and energy for all of them (even the ones i don't necessarily enjoy as much, because i just Like being up to date and Aware of what's going on regardless of quality)
