my top 10 favorite kpop singles of the first half of 2021

i did one of these at the end of march, for the first quarter of the year, and this is my update for the second quarter, which obviously is also the first half of the year lol. so like, that’s kind of a big deal, we already know half of all the kpop that will be released this year, and im starting to have strong favorites that all the stuff from the second half of the year will have to struggle to beat, haha. 

rather than do a big thing like my year-end list that i did at the end of 2020, i’m gonna limit myself to just three sentences per song for songs 10-6, and five sentences for the top 5 songs haha. if these songs are good enough, and they stay high on my list all the way through to the end of the year, then i’ll post big full-size reviews of them then, i guess. or if you want to know more of what i think about something, or why i put something where i did, feel free to ask me about it lol, i love having discussions about this kind of stuff

anyway here’s the list

10: Lunarsolar - DADADA This is kind of a surprise pick for me lol, and I’d be lying if I said that at least half of the reason I wanted to include it here wasn’t just because I want more people to know about this song, and also to surprise people with an interesting pick haha. But genuinely, I think this song is really solid, there aren’t many flaws with it that I can even think of, and I’ve listened to it a ton since it came out. It’s such a fun song, and if you like girl groups and you don’t know this song, then I highly recommend it haha

9: Rocket Punch - Ring Ring When I saw the teaser images, I thought this would be a disco concept, and like it kind of is... but only in the visuals lmao, the song seems pure 80s synthwavey stuff, more like Everglow La Di Da than GFriend Mago (and I’m into that, personally haha). This was a really cool comeback for this group, and I’m continuing to get more and more into them with each new thing they do! I don’t really have a lot to say about it, but it’s just fun and catchy and bright and loud and good, and yeah, it’s a song I’ve really enjoyed listening to a lot, which is really all that you need in order to make it on this list, you know?

8: Cherry Bullet - Love So Sweet This song feels really simple to me, but in a good way! It really feels like the songwriter(s) had a really good idea one day, and wrote a song for it immediately, rather than trying to start a song and come up with ideas as they went haha. It feels like everything in the song is in service to that underlying idea, and everything helps bring it to life more

7: Itzy - In the Morning (or Mafia in the Morning, whichever you prefer. I just tend to call it “Mafia” and nothing else, lol) Okay this one might be kind of a hot take, cause I’ve seen people be prettttty divided on this song, but I personally love it haha. Sure, the lyrics are corny as hell, but that’s nothing new for kpop, and I do think the use of the mafia game as a song motif is kind of interesting, I suppose. But honestly the biggest reason why I love it is the production haha, cause damn this song hits hard and the instrumental just sounds so cool (as do the bsides! their Guess Who mini album is my album of the year so far for sure, no question)

6: Fromis 9 - We Go I’m so glad Fromis came back with this song, and I feel like it’ll be a really meaningful song for me in time. This period of time right now, when we’re starting to feel like progress is being made in the fight against this virus that’s been dominating our lives for a year and a half... I think this song captures that feeling perfectly, possibly without even necessarily trying to. It sounds like a sigh of relief, meeting friends who you haven’t seen in a long time, or just the reassurance that even though many people are still very much in quarantine and taking things very seriously, this won’t be forever and there is still good in the world... that’s what it sounds like to me 

5: TRI.BE - Rub-a-Dum This one was kind of a surprise for me lol, cause I wasn’t expecting to like a song with this title this much. I like Doom Doom Ta, and I would have put it relatively high on this list if Rub-a-Dum hadn’t come out afterwards, but I feel like this song does everything that Doom Doom Ta did but better, and in a bit more of an interesting way. It was written by Shinsadong Tiger and LE from EXID (just as Doom Doom Ta was) and I think this song has LE’s touch all over it, in the best way. I love that this song is kind of experimental, cause like it only has one verse... it goes Intro > Verse > Prechorus > Chorus > Bridge > Final Chorus haha, and i think that’s mostly so that you can luxuriate in that chorus drop as much as possible. The song just really works for me overall, it’s super solid and I just couldn’t deny that it’s in my top 5 favorite songs of the year so far. 

4: Dreamcatcher - Odd Eye As soon as this song came out, it was another moment of “Wow, Dreamcatcher just put out the song of the year right at the beginning”, just like they did in 2020 lol. But as the year has gone on, I think I’m not as into this song as I was into Scream and Boca (the other two from Dreamcatcher’s Dystopia trilogy, with Scream being my SOTY last year). But like... a Dreamcatcher comeback that I feel is just fairly decent and not one of my most favorites... still gets it to 4th place overall haha. That’s just Dreamcatcher’s power, even the songs I’m not as obsessed with are ones that I still get pretty obsessed with. I love this vibe, it’s a really different take on a cyberpunk-y genre from other kpop songs that have dabbled in it, and overall I think every member slayed this (especially Handong who made her triumphant return this comeback!)

3: Weeekly - After School Okay, I’ve been pretty conflicted on this song, because even though initially I wasn’t sure how much I would get into it, it nevertheless is my single most-listened-to song of 2021 so far. Part of that is how much I love Weeekly, part of that is how fun the performances were to watch (and I’m counting watching those as listens to the song lol), but also I think it really did grow on me quite a bit, and I was even considering it to be my favorite of the year for a while. It’s a lot of fun, it’s really catchy, and it’ll probably go down as one of their most iconic and fan-favorite comebacks. It’s the kind of song that’ll get stuck in your head for weeks. It’s just very very very very... Weeekly, haha. 

2: Everglow - First This song is a fucking whirlwind, and it really beat the shit out of me just like the members do to the camera in the music video lmao. It’s pretty different from La Di Da, which has become one of my favorite kpop songs ever, but I really really like it too. I feel like First is what Everglow were going for with Adios and Dun Dun, but fully realized, in a more complete form. I love how high their budget seems to be now, and I love how they seem to be really coming into their own as a group, I feel like this is the Everglow they were always meant to be. Honestly, I could see this maybe becoming my SOTY by the end of the year, and it’s very close (within 10 or so) to being my most-listened song of the year, but I do still think it’s too soon to say for sure haha

1: STAYC - ASAP This was such a hard decision to make, because honestly the top 4 on this list were all really strong contenders for first place, but after a lot of thought, I’ve decided that ASAP is the one I feel like I’m the least likely to change my mind on. I’ve listened to this song every single day since it came out, except for like 4 or so, which means that even though I’ve listened to it less than the three songs below it on this list, I’ve listened to it more consistently than any of them... I just have not gotten tired of it. It’s such a breath of fresh air for kpop. It’s kind of minimalist because it really doesn’t have any extra stuff, it’s very streamlined and it knows exactly what it is and that’s all it needs to be, and that makes for a very satisfying listen, in my opinion. This song sounds like what heart-shaped things look like. ASAP ❤︎

her father owns a development company (basically think bart bass from gossip girl but she is not chuck bass because he’s gross) and her mom is a socialite

she was raised in a wealthy family on the upper east side (nyc). she is an only child, so she grew up weaned on expensive items and became a bit materialistic because of it

because she was an only child people assumed she was always the center of attention but the truth is her parents were very neglectful of her...n she grew up to be pretty emotionally stunted whew she literally cannot deal with her emotions but we’ll get to that

her parents never really wanted kids, they just had thalia to present a family-friendly image, so they used her whenever the cameras were around

during her high school years her father ran into a bit of legal trouble because of a building he owned that burned down. he had buried the story, but word was beginning to come out again (yes i’m ripping off gossip girl ASHDKJH)

her parents divorced because of the scandal, among other things. the two of them constantly fought ever since thalia was a child, but her mom decided to remove herself from the scandal while she still had the chance (which is exactly what her moms father, aka thalia’s grandfather, told her to do)

after the divorce, thalia was left in her father’s care

during the scandal, she began to lash out and rebel against her father specifically, but he threatened to take away her trust fund if she did not behave herself. he needed thalia’s help in maintaining his image

so she agreed to stop lashing out publicly, but still continued her lifestyle on the lowkey

she always managed to get herself into trouble, but also found her way out of it one way or another

thalia took an interest in fashion design early on in her high school years and was able get two internships while she was still in high school

after the divorce, she barely ever saw her mom. not that it mattered because she didn’t see her much in the first place, but her mother ended up remarrying suddenly became a family person, leaving thalia to feel extremely bitter

thalia was at the party because she asked manon to wear one of her designs. due manon being extremely popular, thalia figured she could get more recognition as a designer by asking her to wear one of her designs

she wouldn’t have exactly considered manon a friend, but manon was one of the few people thalia didn’t mistrust, so when her dead body was discovered, thalia was definitely taken aback

thalia was definitely under the influence of something, so she probably doesnt remember that night all too well

when it came to the pact, thalia was quick to agree to it. her father’s one condition for her to keep her trust fund was to stay out of trouble. she knew he could probably have saved her from the mess, but she did not want to have to seek his help

she feels weird being apart of this pact, considering she probably doesn’t trust most of them, but she also didn’t know what else to do

plot ideas (if i remember i’ll strike them out when they get taken):

step siblings - either side of her family, her mom remarried and her dad definitely could have so i would looove step sibling plots. they can b on friendlier terms, or hate each other, literally anything would work

party buddies - this is pretty basic and self explanatory, but someone thalia can go out and have fun with. their friendship is most likely surface level, or prob started that way, but it’s possible they became deeper friends (maybe thalia opened up one day when she was most likely under the influence of something)

ex-fling - thalia is definitely the non-committal type so i doubt she would ever have an ex bf or gf, but it could still have been a serious un-labeled relationship, or just an ex fling. they could be on bad terms, good terms, still have feelings, not have feelings, u name it

unrequited crush -  ur character could have feelings for thalia, but being the way she is, she doesn’t feel them back. this could develop into thalia eventually having feelings for ur muse, or not, whatever we want! OR thalia could have a crush on someone who does not like her back. maybe they’re even more emotionally unavailable than she is, or they simply do not like her back. we could plot this out however

current fling/“friends” w benefits - someone she is currently seeing/sleeping with. could be no strings attached, or there could b some feelings there. maybe they don’t want to make it anything serious, or maybe they’re ready to take it to the next level. maybe one person is ready to go further, and the other isn’t. i put “friends” in parenthesis because she probably doesn’t have many friends

enemies w benefits - imagine the tension!!! they started out hating each other, but ended up hooking up. maybe it was a one time thing, or maybe they can’t stop going back to each other. i think it would b cool if they kept it a secret, they don’t want anyone else to know. this could develop however we want

ex-friends - someone thalia used to consider a close friend, but they had a falling out for whatever reason n maybe they hate each other now. maybe they want to re-kindle their friendship but don’t know how

sibling-like friendship - someone thalia sees like a sibling. they’re there for each other and look out for one another, always have each other’s backs

dynamic duo - could be thalia’s current best friend. i would say she probably doesn’t have many friends, but this person is prob one of the closest people to her and has actually managed to break down some of her walls

confidant - someone who confides in her or someone she confides in, or they confide in each other. they don’t necessarily have to be friends, but they get along and maybe they talk more in private

rivals - they hate each other for whatever reason. maybe it’s jealousy or their personalities just clash, but for whatever reason they do not get along. i love a good enemies plot. they can just b nasty to each other!!! 

safe haven - *mini drug tw*  i did not know how to label this so i apologize for the name. but i think it would b cool if someone helped thalia out during a bad night. she typically saves herself from bad situations, but one day she couldn’t and luckily ur muse was there to help. maybe she drank too much or did too many drugs or mixed the two and ended up rly bad. either way, i would love for someone to have helped her from a tough time. she would probably feel really confused and guilty and like she owes them. maybe ur muse can manipulate her bc of it and make her do things bc she owes them, or maybe they genuinely had good intentions. i would also b down for a plot about thalia helping out someone else’s muse from a sticky situation!!

Kcon Day 2

So this beginning really isn’t about Kcon in general. But if you are purchasing two day passes for Kcon in the future make sure you get two separate tickets for each day. I know it sounds like common sense, but on the second day I had to call the ticket seller and get separate tickets for the second day, because I was given only one for Saturday. Thankfully I was able to get a ticket for that day and got much better seats and they didn’t charge us any more money. Anyways just a heads up for people going next year or in the future.

Golden Child

Okay they opened the second day. There were actually really good and I wish I could give a more detail experience, but I got into Golden Child the day before so I wasn’t completely clueless. I know they performed three songs I’m pretty sure. For someone that wasn’t a huge fan beforehand they really are energetic and a great time to watch perform. They also opened up with a dance performance which was really cool and strong which wasn’t like what I watched earlier, so it was nice to see that Golden child can also be cute and strong. The one song I knew was their debut song, and it was really great, because apparently everyone knew it and everyone was singing along to it.

Fromis 9

Okay I only knew their most recent song that came out a couple weeks ago. They were really nice and adorable. They were like a breathe of fresh air, because they are so refreshing. They had amazing fan service because during one of their songs they were dancing at the different edges of the stage smiling to the fans and everything. They did an introduction and then they did dances to senior girl groups such as SNSD and Red Velvet. Fromis 9 was great and I wasn’t a fan before but I am now.

EXID

Okay I am a huge fan of EXID and they were amazing. They started off with a Lady. Two members started off in the crowd right near us which was amazing. They were amazing during Lady. They also performed Night Rather Than Day and I wasn’t a huge fan of the song, but seeing it live was amazing and made it really grew on me. They also performed DDD which I really liked, they seemed like they were having a great time on stage in general. What really made the whole crowd go wild was when they performed Up&Down. They whole crowd sang along, like even if you weren’t an EXID Stan you still sang along. I really enjoyed EXID a lot.

NCT

Okay NCT WAS AMAZING. I’m going to describe each member one by one. Okay so Taeil, they are all very handsome and Taeil is no exception. Not going to lie he looks smaller in person height wise, but his vocals are really amazing. Johnny, so Johnny really popped off. He started performing and he had a jacket on and then homie took it off and had to flex on someone because his arms looked really nice. Also his fan service throughout their whole stage was amazing. Yuta I am a huge stan of Yuta like the four of them left. The lines that he got were amazing and his smile is honestly the best thing ever to see. WinWin he is so adorable and that’s the tea, and I don’t get why they don’t give WinWin lines, because his voice is just really great to here. It must be because we don’t hear it often so whenever we do it’s magical. Doyoung let’s just say this vocals on point. He also seems taller which was kind of surprising and he has such a welcoming face and his face just makes him seem really inviting. Okay Jaehyun is extremely handsome and that’s the tea sweeties. Jaehyun looked really good and his signing voice is nice and also kind of deep. His English was good actually (he lived in four years that’s why he’s hear man). Jaehyun is actually good at dancing like what a surprise, but even for his height he keeps up well. Okay Haechan, I’m also a huge Haechan Stan and he is really adorable and has a nice smile. He sings well, like very well and he has a memorable voice. I also really liked what he was wearing. Now MARK LEE his rap skills are so good and his rap voice is nice and deep. He is also extremely handsome and he kind of look short compared to everyone else. He has this confidence that just is so strong, and he is so adorable. LEE TAEYONG okay he literally is a handsome in person as in camera he really does look like an anime character. He raps really well and he can fill up the stage with charisma. His dance skill is no joke, like homie should have broken a bone already. They performed Limitless, 0 Mile, Firetruck, Touch, and Cherry Bomb. Limitless was really good along with Touch and 0 mile. They had nine members for Firetruck so they gave Johnny some of haechan’s lines and Doyoung some of Taeil lines. Then for cherry bomb my favorite the way taeyong does his back fall move is amazing and that was great.

Wanna One

Now I wasn’t a huge Stan, but they were really good. They introduced each member by threes by coming in like waves. Which was really cool. They did about four songs I don’t know all of them though. I only knew Boomerang and Energetic. Which was really hype and everyone was standing and jumping along. I was surprised they closed but I didn’t find anything wrong with it. They were really good and I wish I could say more; but I don’t know any of their names. All I know is that they have people that weren’t stans bopping along.

Special stage

Okay LE did this amazing solo rap, and it was the most amazing thing I have ever seen. She just had so much confidence and she was just shining and looked like she was having the time of her life. Then taeyong and Mark came out and performed some of whiplash which was amazing, because no one was expecting it. So they just kind of appeared and everyone was like who was that and then they realized it was them and everyone kind of freaked out and then bopped out. Everyone was so hype and started jumping up and down. They kept going from one side of the stage to the other it was nice.

The end

Okay they all came out of the stage and Everyone was really hype especially wanna one and NCT. When they all had to go back to main stage to bow I can see Johnny running back with a wanna one member to get back in time. Then they said goodbyes and wanna one bowed an extra time. Again, I had a great time this weekend and I’m grateful and appreciative to go. If I came off in a way unappreciative I didn’t mean to, because I appreciated this experience so much.

And I was fucking OBSESSED with it. Anyone who's ever done 'rp boards section' rps knows how they work--One person posts a "[Fandom] Rp" thread, others join.So I made an akatsuki thread. Wanting to focus on the actual characters, I specified no OCs for that particular rp. That must have been a turn off, because NO ONE joined, and I was like. Devastated.UNTIL, finally, someone asked to be Itachi! Yay! They also asked if they could use a 'maid' character, who the akatsuki apparently kept around to keep the base clean (???) and 12YO menger didn't realize they were sneaking an OC in, and allowed it.That's how met 'Wulfraptor.' And she was... Hoo boy.For one--The 'maid' was an OC. Not just any OC--Like. The GOD of sues. I mean holy SHIT. For one, despite having no combat power, she... Won every fight??? Somehow? All 'teh smexy men :3 xD' fought over her.Oh, and she was shipped with the most OOC Itachi ever seen in the history of teenager RP. Except... Wulfraptor wasn't a teenager. She was 21.Now, bad characters and RP are forgivable, but some of the stuff she did (inserting weird fetish shit into our RP's) was not. This is where things get fun.For one--This girl had a god mod problem. Like--Holy fucking SHIT. Her characters were unbeatable, they did that thing where like:Person A: "Thanks for this blue square!" Character said, thinking she wished she had a green one.Person B: "Here's a green square, since you wanted one!"Like... One (less good) RP I started was about humans that could turn into dragons. She's a species of dragon that I made up, completely ignoring your list--Also she's princess of a thing that's COMPLETELY out of place in this universe!!!"Another part of that RP was that regular humans could become temporary dragons if they found a "dragon stone," a rare object that formed naturally in the mountains.Wulfraptor, later in the ooc chat: "uhh he was trying to kill my character because he wanted her dragon stone!"Me: "she... Doesn't have one?"Wulf: "i have it so all dragons have them in their heads, actually!"Me: "no, I already explained where the stines come from? REALLY didn't like Rping with her after a while, but when I left our threads she used to spam pm me until I picked them back up.Other weird shit:-Her (human) character began to lactate in one thread after getting attached to a baby fox-Kin once yelled at a character for hurting his arm... WHAT IS ECZEMA?

Eczema is a type of skin condition that causes the skin to become inflamed, often resulting in itchy skin.

Additionally, eczema can cause rashes that lead to cracked, red, and rough skin.

There are many reasons that trigger eczema and skin problems like eczema can be very irritating.

Causes of inflammation can include everything fromy eating nuts and dairy, to pollution, smoke and pollen.

As a result, it is important to visit a doctor and consult with a medical dermatologist that can help you manage your eczema.

If you are prone to having eczema and you can feel that you are starting to get skin rashes, then that is one sign that your skin problem is starting. It may start during infancy and it continues through childhood. If it starts appearing on your babies, it is called baby eczema and one symptom is that there is eczema on face and cheeks that will appear every time it is triggered.  If your babies continue on scratching it, it may cause a skin infection which is why you have to keep a close eye on them. Have them checked by your pediatrician just to be sure and have it diagnosed as early as possible.

WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF ECZEMA?

Nobody knows the specific cause of eczema but a person can develop it due to hereditary and environmental factors. Genetically speaking, a child can have it if one parent or both parents already have an atopic disease, though different environmental factors bring out the symptoms more often. Some of the most well-known factors are the changes in temperature (from hot to cold); allergens like pollens, dust mites and mold; irritants like soaps and detergents; bacteria such as Staphylococcus, viruses and certain fungi; ingesting dairy products, eggs, nuts and seeds, and so much more like wheat (though simply ingesting protein and other gluten food like wheat can be dangerous to those who have celiac disease which causes dermatitis herpetiformis because of gluten intolerance); lastly, the hormonal changes that mostly occur in women. You can never be too careful if you have this kind of skin condition because you cannot perfectly avoid all of the mentioned causes. What you can do is have your medicine close to you for emergency cases when it becomes triggered all of a sudden.

WHAT ARE THE TYPES OF ECZEMA?

There are many types of eczema that you need to be familiar with especially if you are experiencing its general symptoms. In times like that, you need to educate yourself in order to be sure and for you to have the right knowledge before having doctors diagnose it.

Dyshidrotic Dermatitis

One type of eczema is dyshidrotic eczema otherwise known as dyshidrotic dermatitis. Its symptoms are blisters that develop on the soles of your feet and on your palms.

Stasis Dermatitis

Another type of eczema is stasis dermatitis which occurs mostly on the lower extremities. People with poor blood circulation usually develop this and it happens mostly on the lower legs because that is where blood typically collects. Protein leaks into a person’s tissue because of the blood collecting on the veins of their lower legs which causes the pressure on the veins to increase. Because of this, blood cells and other fluids build up and cause their legs to swell which is called peripheral edema. People who are diagnosed with this type of eczema will experience (aside from swollen legs and feet) open sores, and the usual, itchy and reddish skin. You are more likely to have a high chance of developing stasis dermatitis if you are suffering from high blood pressure, varicose veins, congestive heart failure, obesity, and injury to lower legs though it is commonly caused by a condition called venous insufficiency which happens because your veins have trouble sending blood to your heart.

Nummular Eczema

Moving on, the third type of eczema is called nummular eczema also known as nummular dermatitis or discoid eczema. The symptoms of nummular dermatitis are coin-shaped lesions or patches on the body. They are usually developed on the arms and legs and slowly spread to the torso and hands. These lesions usually itch and burn while others may ooze fluid and become flaky and crusty. They are triggered by temperature changes, stress, and environmental irritants such as soaps and metals. People who have this type of eczema have a very sensitive skin which means they need to be extra careful.

Seborrheic Dermatitis

Seborrheic dermatitis is another type of eczema that is commonly mistaken as psoriasis or allergic reaction because it is also itchy and has flaky scales on it. The exact causes of this type of eczema are unknown but it seems to be triggered by multiple things such as stress, genes, cold and dry weather, certain medical conditions and yeast that lives on the skin.

Atopic Dermatitis

Another type is atopic dermatitis which affects a large percentage of the Earth’s population. This usually begins during childhood and is often inherited. Patients who have been diagnosed with this condition have a highly sensitive skin. This mostly affects infants and young children though adults are also affected with this too.

There are many factors that worsen this condition including:

seasonal allergies

low humidity

irritants such as harsh soaps

Contact Dermatitis

Another type of eczema is the contact dermatitis which is triggered when your skin comes in contact with a substance in the environment of which you are allergic to.

There are three types of contact dermatitis and these are allergic contact dermatitis, irritant contact dermatitis, and photo-contact dermatitis. Each has different causes.

Allergic contact dermatitis only develops an allergic reaction when your skin comes in contact with a foreign substance that makes the body release inflammatory chemicals which cause it to become itchy and irritated. Such substances are jewelry made out of gold or nickel, chemicals in skin care products, perfumes, poison oak, and poison ivy.

Irritant dermatitis is the most common type which happens when the skin comes in contact with a toxic material such as bleach, detergents, kerosene and pepper spray.

Photo-contact dermatitis is the least common among the three and only comes out when some active ingredients in skin care products and cosmetics are exposed are exposed to the sun which will ultimately result in irritation.

Hand Eczema

Hand eczema is another form of eczema that affects only a small percentage of the world’s population.

Genetics, contact allergens and irritating substances can trigger this type of eczema and usually affects those who work in cleaning, medical and mechanical jobs of which they have a high chance of being in contact with the chemicals and irritants.

Aside from redness and itching, other symptoms are a pain, dryness where your skin becomes flaky and peels, cracks, and blisters. Prevention is better than cure when it comes to this type of eczema.

You should avoid what caused it and make sure to gently wash and clean it using lukewarm water and non-fragrance cleanser.

Always remember to moisturize your hands with a moisturizer containing a higher oil content and then apply the moisturizer every time you finish washing your hands.

Neurodermatitis

The last one on the list is called Neurodermatitis, also known as Lichen simplex chronicus. It is a very annoying condition because the itchiness is so intense that it can disrupt your sleep and your everyday life. It regularly appears where you can reach it for scratching the head, neck, wrist, ankle, vulva, anus and scrotum. You need to see the doctor as soon as possible if the area becomes infected and if it affects your daily routine and you can’t concentrate on your daily task. This depends as the itching may come and or the itch becomes non-stop.

a month ago i watched every Twice video in order, some of them for the first time, because Twice was finally clicking for me and i was “getting it”. i wrote a little thing about which songs i liked and which i didnt, and i wanna expand on that cause my opinions have gotten more fleshed out over the last couple weeks of listening to them, and also some of them have changed. i just really like reviewing things, i hope that’s okay lol

so here are two or three sentence reviews of every Twice title track, in order

Like Ooh Ahh: i think this is one of their best songs, personally. it’s not as much of the bubblegum stuff they go for after this, but it’s extremely catchy lol, the “i just wanna fall in love!” and the “ha~~ ooh-ahh hage!” gets stuck in my head a lot. i just love the way this song’s instrumental sounds too, the aesthetic of it

Cheer Up: um okay so from hot to cold... this is my least favorite Twice song. i’m listening to it right now as I’m writing this, and I’ll listen all the way through, but i haven’t listened to it all the way through very often. i think the chorus feels out of place, so does the “be a man, real man” thing. i don’t like that. that ruins the song for me lol. i also don’t like the chorus much haha, it sounds like theyre saying “chore up” cause they went with 치얼업 (chi-eol/eor-eop) instead of like... even just “chireop” or “chi-eo eop”... they dont usually have ㄹ for an english r sound at the end of a word...

TT: ah okay nice we’re back on track lol, this song is fantastic and totally deserves to be their most popular song (at least in terms of music video views). when i first heard it i didnt like it cause i didnt like anything Twice lol... then when I listened to every Twice title track in order as i was beginning to “get it”, i liked everything except the “i’m like TT, ahhh, just like TT, ahhh” haha, i thought the fact that it was about the emoticon was weird and didnt fit the video, and the “ahh” was goofy haha. but now? god its so catchy lmao i always whisper-sing along to this part when i listen to this song haha. i love the echo-y reverb-y synths in the verse, and the instrumental in the chorus when paired with the vocal melody just makes it one of the best choruses in kpop lol. i think TT is their best song. the rap break doesnt feel like a rap break, it fits sooooo naturally in with the song, it’s so impressive. this song is so impressive

Knock Knock: initially i liked this song a lot, and i still do, but... this would be another group’s best song, easily, but for Twice... it’s a bit overshadowed haha. the guitar plus the synth is really cool though, its rare to hear a calming, sort of mellow, soft song with as high a BPM as this haha. one of the writers, Mayu Wakisaka, also was a composer for Loona’s Hi High and Fromis 9′s Love Bomb... and you can totally see that lol. all of those songs have high BPMs and are wildly catchy. still, idk, i like this song but i dont have a ton to say about it

Signal: this song is weird in a good way, i love really unconventional instrumentals. it sounds as alien and outer space as the music video haha. at first the “sign-eul bonae signal bonae” kinda annoyed me, but i got more used to it. i don’t listen to this song much, but i should change that, honestly. though another thing is that the music video has a lot those things where it adds sounds from the video that arent in the regular song, and has an intro i gotta skip every time lol, but like thats not a huge problem, i can just listen to the song elsewhere haha

One More Time: this song sounds like something you’d hear at a hockey game lmao. i dont even know really what i mean by that, i dont go to hockey games lol.... anyway. i like this song, but again, it’s kinda overshadowed. if i’m in the mood for the vibe this song has, there are other Twice songs that have it that i like more. it’s refreshing every once in a while though.

Likey: this song is so good!!! it didnt stand out at first, like, there’s not really a huge gimmick like some of the others... “likey likey likey” is kind of the same sort as the “just like TT” and “knock knock knock on my door” and stuff from other songs, but for some reason it feels less prominent in this song. i dont think this is their most iconic song ever, and its not genre-defining or one of the ones you’d mention first when talking about Twice, but it’s just a really solid song. one of my favorites

Heart Shaker: yeah, heart shaker is alright. it was apparently just a couple months after likey, and it feels like a similar concept? maybe it’s just the music video giving me that impression. it’s alright. the music video has the longest part with the distinctive way Twice shoots dance scenes... in that very nauseating way lol... but i don’t mind it lol i’m used to that by now

Candy Pop: so like, was this song sorta made for kids specifically? i guess i’m mostly just being influenced by the music video cause i’m watching it while writing this. i dont like the video much lmao it’s like a pokemon ripoff complete with Officer Jennies and Jin-young Brock. the song’s not bad though, it’s catchy but it’s a little too sugary sweet for me (which makes sense given the concept i guess). i like a lot of ideas in the instrumental though... because it was also written by the people who did Knock Knock, including the writer of Hi High and Love Bomb. 

What is Love: this isnt their best song ever, but it’s undeniably one of their most solid. i listen to it a lot haha. the music video has a cool concept, i like when groups do this kind of thing (interpreting scenes from movies or famous music videos or popular culture). i don’t have much to say other than that i like it a lot, it’s one of my favorites i think

Wake Me Up: okay here we go, this is another one of the three Twice singles I just don’t really like. it’s a fine song up until the chorus. i just can’t get over the shift upwards in.. uhh.. scale? octave? pitch? one of those lol, or something else, i dont really know music terms like that very well haha. yeah though i just find it offputting. 

Dance the Night Away: it’s alright. i’m pretty neutral on it. i was put off at first but i’ve gotten used to it. though still, i’m not that into it. i get that its a dance focused song and the choreography does look a lot more intense than their other choreos, and thats cool, but that doesnt make me like the music in and of itself. it’s a summer-jam type of song, and i’m not as into those anyway. there’ll never be a better kpop summer-jam than Red Flavor anyway lol

Yes or Yes: this is the other Twice that i don’t like haha. i just think the constant “you only one choice: yes or yes” thing is kind of annoying haha. also the chorus is catchy in a way that i dont think its especially exciting... it’s an earworm because i think it’s slightly annoying, not because it’s satisfying. of the songs that i’ve said i don’t like, this is the one i could see myself getting into the most. this might not always be in my “bottom three”. it is right now though

Fancy: this was the first comeback they had since i’ve been into kpop, and even though i wasnt into Twice at the time, i wanted to try it out just to see if it would change my mind, and it did somewhat.... sorta. it got the ball rolling for sure. it came out on my birthday, the same day as the Loona Fire dance cover haha, that was a good birthday. yeah this song is great, i think it’s better than any of their 2018 comebacks, personally. the concept isn’t all that different from normal Twice, it just appears that way cause the video is so lavish and elegant. it didnt convince me to be a Twice fan on that day it came out, but I liked what I thought made it different from the other Twice songs I’d heard. but now? what I like most about it is how very Twice it really is. the thing is, I wasn’t into Twice probably because the only songs i’d heard were Yes or Yes and Cheer Up, and those songs are still my least favorites lol. Fancy doesnt sound that out of place when you take into account their whole discography! i looove the video and i loooove the chorus so much, this song is great and i wonder if they’ll be able to top it if they have another comeback this year

Breakthrough: okay so in the last one i said i wonder if they’ll be able to top it this year, i meant in terms of Korean comebacks lol. cause in terms of just songs in general, if i include their new Japanese comebacks, they’ve already topped Fancy. this song is the one that finally won me over. this is the song that made me a Twice fan. now, this one is a little outside their typical concept, but they’re really really good at it nevertheless. i wonder if Twice is going a bit more in this direction? at least maybe half the time, alternating between the two styles now? cause Breakthrough continues a bit down the path that Fancy set for them. in any case, i love basically everything about this song, I’m so glad it got me to finally love their music

Happy Happy: so you know how I said that Breakthrough was a change from the bubblegum fun-fun style they’ve had and that move is what got me to finally be into Twice? well that made me think I’d like Happy Happy less haha, but actually I listen to it way more than I listen to Breakthrough, I like it more overall. this is a very Twice-style song, and that’s fine because it’s fantastic. this song genuinely makes me happy

i dont really like when trainees on those competition shows not only are in groups already, but like currently active groups that just promoted their 7th comeback.... idk.... i dont blame handong for this, it might not have even entirely been her decision, i blame the agency and the idol producer show for accepting someone with that clear of an advantage. like even if her name is barely known in china, she has so much experience and honed her skills so well that it’ll become known immediately if she’s given proper screentime, you know? like even if you’d never heard of dreamcatcher, if you see that one of the trainees needs essentially no extra help in dance and vocals because she’s a master of them already, then like.... 

i’m okay with gyuri being on produce 48 even though fromis 9 had just debuted, because i understand the reasons she stated (not feeling up to par with the other members cause she didnt have any idol training like most of them did) and it was only after they had done one song together, their debut. same with jung chaeyeon on produce 101, even though dia had debuted, she and huihyeon were actually supposed to be part of the show anyway and they auditioned BEFORE they debuted. 

but meiqi and xuanyi on the chinese produce 101..... like... my guess is that they were included in the show to give it attention and legitimacy from a korean audience too, and they were practically shoo-ins to make the final group and give that group attention from korean audiences. like, wjsn was doing fine, weren’t they? they’ve had more success since that happened, but i dont think that’s exactly why... and with handong... dreamcatcher isnt at the level of attention that wjsn is/was at, so this move really confuses me. and i’m not gonna lie, i’m a bit worried about what might happen. i dont think anything especially bad is gonna happen, hopefully something that is still “good” will come of it, even if it’s a bit unfortunate as a fan of ot7.............

i also wonder if maybe she’s doing this because dreamcatcher might take a bit of a break after the US tour anyway, cause they’ve been touring and promoting really heavily for a while now, like even since way before deja vu, so maybe theyve earned a nice break and she figured its a good time to go do that? hmmm. 

anyway i mean i obviously support her, and i’ll probably watch some of the show, at least her cut lmao. she’s not the kind of person who would just leave to go be famous somewhere else lmao, i wouldn’t even consider that for a single second haha that would just be so out of character for her. i’m not worried about her intentions, i’m worried about the nature of the idol business.

so who are the the IOI members who maintained the most popularity? like definitely Chungha, obviously, but then like idk... Kyulkyung seems pretty popular despite Pristin being a mess and probably defunct, Sejeong seems popular, Mina too, isnt Mina hosting one of those music shows? or did for a while anyway? I don’t know much about Somi but isnt she debuting as a solo artist soon or something? uh idr cause i only know about the IOI members who went on to be in groups that i like lol

it makes me wonder about Izone... they’re gonna be a group for like twice as long as IOI was a thing, which gives all of them more time in the spotlight so the popularity they accrue might last longer post-Izone? who knows. I mean like Sakura was already famous so she’ll be fine. I just can’t imagine a world where Chaeyeon doesnt have a super successful career after Izone, it’s frankly a tragedy that she wasnt already in a huge group or something lol. her younger sister is all set for years to come cause she’s in a JYP girl group, like even if you dont like their music you know who Itzy is lol, the name recognition is hard to beat. and that’s Chaeyeon’s younger sister lol... so Chaeyeon is like that but with even more experience and charisma. Well idk, i dont know enough about Chaeryeong to be honest, but Chaeyeon just oooooozes talent. it’s impossible to watch any clip of her performing and not go “how the FUCK was she not already super successful”. is she the best dancer in the new generation of kpop girl groups? probably tbh. 

You know, a lot of the post-IOI groups contain multiple members because they were part of the same company. I can see that happening with Izone too. Eunbi and Chaewon are both part of Woollim, and Wonyoung and Yujin are both part of Starship. It’s possible that some of the members will leave their companies and join one of their fellow member’s companies too, such as Hyewon whose company doesnt have any groups and seems pretty small. There were plenty of trainees on Produce 48 who were in the same companies as the Izone members, so maybe the members will join groups with those trainees? That’s a bit harder to look up and I don’t feel like doing that lmao, I dont remember any notable names... the only things I remember are: 

1: that Yena is in Yue Hua with Sihyeon and Yiren and seemed pretty close to them, maybe just as close as those two are with each other, and its possible that she could be added to Everglow as a rapper or something. she’s pretty goofy and at first i didnt know if that would fit the Everglow vibe but... Yena looks really cool in Violeta, and Everglow has Onda who a ray of sunshine, so it doesnt matter haha Yena would fit in just fine. 

and 2: that Yuri is in Stone with Gyuri, Sian, and that other person who was on Idol School (also by the way apparently Onda was on that too under her real name lmao huh) whose name I dont remember (the one who talked about this being her last chance or something, idr). and like I guess I could see something happening with those two trainees and Yuri, but honestly idk. obviously tho Yuri isnt gonna be added to Fromis 9 lol

I also wonder what’s gonna come of the Japanese members. are they just gonna go back to AKB48? that seems like a huge step down lol, especially since some of the Japanese trainees who just barely didnt make the final lineup are currently pursuing careers in Korea. I could see them joining some of those agencies and stuff, and being in groups with the other members maybe, especially Sakura and Chaeyeon cause I know they’re close. I also know that Hitomi was pretty unknown in Japan, and while I’m sure that wouldn’t be the case anymore, still, she might be much more well known in Korea. 

I wonder if any of them would go solo, and if so I wonder who. Sakura has the name recognition but honestly, no offense, I don’t think she’d be a good solo artist lmao. Eunbi has a shot because she’s the oldest, but then what about that potential group with Chaewon? who knows. 

I’ve seen stuff about Izone saying that when their contract is up, there will be an option to renew, and that’s also a possibility. they might just stay Izone, especially after being together that long. However I don’t know how likely that is, just because I know how businesses work lol. If this was a purely artistic endeavor then maybe they would stay a group, but there’s a lot of money and like 10 different companies involved, so it’s not likely.

i tried some other boygroups last night because i was really glad that i checked out bts to see for myself what they were really like, but idk, i feel like bts breaks the mold, ESPECIALLY with songs like idol, it doesnt even sound like kpop. i mean, of course it doesnt, it sounds like a south african dance track with elements of hiphop and shouts in the chorus from traditional korean storytelling. wild. nobody else did that. so yeah idk i only tried the first youtube result for 5 or 6 boygroups, just to get a feel for them, and like there werent any i felt were god-awful, but there werent any that really grabbed my attention either. idk, that’s true of a lot of girl groups i tried too, but at this point im so far down the girlgroup rabbithole that of course im gonna be encountering ones that didnt quite catch on. like, i took the first couple boygroups that i could think of and listened to those and wasn’t too impressed, whereas if i took the first couple girlgroups that came to mind i would be. i know because i was when i first heard them lol. like, comparing sf9, nct, exo, etc with red velvet, izone, even blackpink (for as much as i give it shit, kill this love took some real risks. in my personal opinion i dont think the risks paid off, but still)... and thats not even mentioning loona lol... idk, im not gonna like try to say boygroups are bad, it’s just that i find that girlgroup songs often are in a style that appeals to me a lot more. its not just that i like the members more or whatever lol, i’m bi lol it has nothing to do with attraction or whatever. even just based on absolute first impressions alone, girlgroups seem to vary more, even within their title tracks, which are usually the most formulaic (cause they have to appeal to the most people). as i said, bts in 2018-19 is something of an exception, they’ve kind of transcended kpop anyway, but if i compared one of their early songs, they’d fit the type of thing i’m talking about. 

boygroups seem like western boybands a lot of the time, theyre about seeming tough and/or sensitive, usually both at the same time. girlgroups are often about being cute and bubbly or being powerful and “bad-bitch” and stuff, but the way they achieve those aesthetics musically is more interesting to me than the boyband tough-and-sensitive musical aesthetic. a song like DKDK by Fromis 9 isnt as hard hitting as a song like Enough by SF9 (i only chose these two for the 9 lol), but its............. better............. catchier......... weirder.......... makes me happier.............. idk maybe im just not a fan of brooding lol, i like goofiness. even within music that goes hard as fuck, i dont like if its just brooding, i want you to be going WILD like CLC’s Hobgoblin does lol. I want the sound of the song to beat me up, even if I wasnt watching the video. and like in hiphop (which i think boygroups might trend more towards) i like when people are fuckin leaping around the stage or set, rapping their heads off. like BTS’s Idol, but also like the american rappers I listen to, like Jpegmafia and Danny Brown and shit. I know that’s a tall order to expect that kind of performance from kpop, but not because kpop cant do it, its just that they might avoid being too abrasive in their title tracks (maybe bsides would be like that?). but idk, some girlgroup title tracks are wild and kind of abrasive... so... 

and like, sure some girlgroups focus on looking cool or sexy or cute or whatever, but i often feel like there’s more to the aesthetic than that, though maybe that’s just the stuff i listen to. I haven’t found a major boygroup who makes videos like red velvet does lol... (except bts)

anyway this is a ramble

if you disagree and have examples please let me know! i want to be wrong about this! the six songs i checked out and wasnt impressed by were “enough” by sf9, “wakey wakey” by nct, “crown” by txt, “love shot” by exo, “spring breeze” by wanna one, and “say my name” by ateez. not to repeat myself too much but lemme pick six of the biggest girlgroups and list their first youtube result just to demonstrate the difference in style. “kill this love” by blackpink, “really bad boy” by red velvet, “butterfly” by loona, “violeta” by izone, “dalla dalla” by itzy, “bon bon chocolat” by everglow. i mean... like... idk all those songs are weird. rbb is actually one of red velvet’s less weird songs lol, but still. shrug. and those are just six recent 2019 ones. 

uh yeah but anyway if you know of some weird stuff or wanna lmk about another song from one of those boygroups that i’d like more, or you have something to say about those songs that i might not have picked up on, let me know! i like liking music more than i like disliking music, so i’d love to change my mind haha, i wanna like as much stuff as possible.

16. languages: are amazing and i love them. okay fine lol i only speak english, but i took german in middle and high school, i took latin in high school as well, then took latin and ancient greek in college, and then after college i did a lot of looking into hungarian, vietnamese, a little bit of indonesian, turkish, and polish, and then recently i’ve been pretty focused on korean for obvious reasons. i speak none of those languages tho, lol. if i heard someone speaking some of those i could get the gist of what types of things theyre talking about most likely, but honestly my whole thing with languages is that im more interested in learning about the intricacies of how languages work and especially how they change over time than i am in actually learning the language. i’d love if my dumb adhd brain allowed me to focus hard enough and really commit to becoming fluent in a second language because so far i’ve only steadily approached being barely conversational, i’ve never actually reached even that point yet lol. and being only fluent in english makes me feel like a stupid american lol. i pick up bits of language really easily, but the rigor of learning ALL the vocab and ALL the little details you need to become actually fluent is where i fall off. 

like whenever i go through an anime phase, i pick up lots and lots of japanese. like if they keep using a word i’ll see it in the subtitles and figure that it must mean that, and then i’ll pay attention to the endings they use and how they inflect it and i’ll make little inferences about what those signify, so then when i hear a word that i dont recognize but it has a grammatical ending that i know, i can infer the meaning of the word from context, and im going through this same learning process with korean now and it’s super super fun and i’m loving how much progress ive made (though i could have been making progress like three times as fast if i was actually taking a korean class)… but the actual work of learning common phrases, learning the sheer volume of vocab, all that stuff… yeah that’s where i fall off. so idk how fluent i’ll get in korean, but i’m down to find out, lol. maybe this is the one i’ll really try to focus on and achieve it with!

20. random fact: idk... if yall couldnt tell and didnt already know this, i’m a linguist haha. i went to school for linguistics, i majored in linguistics and classics (latin, ancient greek, etc) though honestly i was only into the languages, roman and greek history is cool and all but not really what i’m most into. majoring in classics was a mistake lol but oh well. i didnt end up graduating though because of unrelated reasons.... adhd, depression, just a general sense that the way the whole system works just wasnt made for me and it didnt click with me and ive never been good at forcing myself to be good at school... and like i was tired of hearing from professors that i have “a very organized mind when it comes to linguistics stuff” (something a greek professor said that meant a lot to me) or that i “understand how language works better than most other students my age” and that im a natural and that its impressive how nuanced my understanding of these concepts is.... while also failing or almost failing all of the classes whose professors said that about me. like basically all those statements were followed by a “, but” or a “, so if you just-”.... sigh. so i guess i’m not “actually” a linguist. whatever “actually” means there. 

so other random fact i guess, which is still related but anyway... i have a conlang! that’s a constructed language. ive been working on a language for like 6 or 7 years. its at a state right now where it’s not really something i can just like... speak? it was at one point, maybe. but basically what i like to do is try out various ideas i have about language and phonology and morphology, so my language is kind of like a sandbox lol. if youre a scientist you conduct experiments, if youre a linguist i think you should try making a conlang. its not a common hobby but its something i spend an unconscionable amount of time thinking about lol. like basically 24/7. i’m almost always thinking about my word for x thing im seeing or thinking about, or like some sound change i heard that some language had, and how that would sound if applied to the words in my language... 

like the reason my language isnt at a point right now where i can speak it is because getting into korean has made me think about massively reconfiguring how the grammar works. its always been kinda like latin and german, cause those are what i was taking when i started, and then it got kinda like ancient greek, so the grammar has/had a lot of complicated conjugations that are just honestly so superfluous... its such a mess lol... i have a much better understanding of how those systems come about in language now, so even if i remake my language to have verb conjugations like latin or greek, it’d be a much more coherent and natural system than the one thats existed in my language for years... but after learning about hungarian and korean in particular, i really wanna try making it a lot more logical like those languages are. but my big thing is phonology (speech sounds), so i just get hung up on sound changes and cool new consonants and vowels to add, so i keep putting off actually fixing my language lol. also ive become attached to my awful, amateurish words haha. im so bad at this... a real conlanger like tolkien or the dude who made the languages for game of thrones would look at mine and scoff haha. most of my words are just straight up stolen from words in latin, german, many others, but predominantly... english. i just mangle english words and call it my own lol, and ive been trying to replace those words with original ones that i made up arbitrarily... like my word for nose is just “nass” and my word for dog is “handir” which is just based on english “hound” and german “Hund” and stuff lol. i wanna change those
