some comprehensible input links
language learning forums can be so toxic sometimes...
so many people love to push that “one method” is phenomenal and works when others just WON’T, meanwhile another will say the opposite. And then its like... where is the room to acknowledge maybe parts of each method have merit for different individuals, since they might help or click in different ways.
just today i saw someone arguing about stephen krashen’s language theories and how they’re all disproven bullshit that are completely unusable. I don’t know a huge amount about his theories. But I do know the emphasis he brought up on “providing students comprehensible input and lessons to learn from” is a concept that also is in stuff like the modern Teach Languages Through Storytelling lessons and Comprehensible Input Lessons. Which if you’ve ever used them? They’re Amazing. They are lessons where teachers purposefully use the target language as much as possible, and use visuals to help make what they say as comprehensible as possible to students so they can learn. This is how when I volunteered, we were supposed to tutor ESL speakers - because we could not reliably teach with english translation since their english levels varied, and we did not have speakers of every learners native language present to help teach them. Our program coordinator showed an example of how to do it by teaching us some Thai, his native language, in this method. And it was extremely easy to follow and understand. Textbooks/grammar guides/flashcards certainly will help speed up the process - aka allow students to use Graded Reader books, learner podcasts, then target language native materials like shows and novels to learn quicker. But lessons in the target language as soon as possible, emphazising getting students to comprehend, is valuable. Just as its valuable later on when students can handle more complex lessons in the target language.
Examples of teachers teaching through comprehensible input (I am thrilled to notice there’s a lot more than last time I looked these sorts of channels up):
Hit Chinese: https://youtu.be/xG3w2i1OBfc
Unconventional Chinese with Keren: https://youtu.be/9N-nNvnAYTs
French Comprehensible Input: https://youtu.be/c2SUQVjklVA
Alice Ayel (french): https://youtu.be/DcuVNAnsWZM
Dreaming Spanish (a fantastic example): https://youtu.be/ObO1CGY_NHI
Comprehensible Russian: https://youtu.be/gHCvEKxeXvk
Comprehensible Japanese: https://youtu.be/gHCvEKxeXvk
Japanese Immersion with Asami: https://youtu.be/pr_yRUVQQt0
Learn Korean in Korean*: https://youtu.be/zUulbCruiMs
I just found the Learn Korean in Korean channel a few weeks ago, notable in that he also teaches hangul before the other lessons. I think he maybe uses too few pictures to make it as easy on students. But having said that, I know zero korean whatsoever and am watching his Lesson 1 and finding it completely easy to follow. So I’d say yes his teaching style probably falls under “engage student in the target language and make it comprehensible so they can learn it.” I’m really impressed with his channel tbh because it teaches totally in Korean so any language learner from any native language could use it.
Just found Japanese Immersion with Asami today while looking up “japanese comprehensible input” and its an amazing example of how these kinds of lessons work. In a classroom setting (or with a tutor), generally the idea is to provide learners with lots of comprehensible input of the language they’re learning and perhaps some help to keep things comprehensible (in a classroom that would be word definitions on the board maybe for reference, or in these examples subtitles to aid learners for reference - although first priority a teacher is aiming to use pictures/gestures/visuals to make as much as possible comprehensible).
Examples of textbooks that teach through comprehensible input (these were made before Krashen, so i merely bring up Krashen because Today’s Language Forum Arguement was ‘all krashen’s ideas are bullshit ALL of them even comprehensible input ideas so you shouldn’t even bother using even a little of something related to his ideas):
French: https://archive.org/details/jensen-arthur-le-francais-par-la-methode-nature
Italian: https://archive.org/details/LitalianoSecondoIlMetodoNatura
Latin: lingva latina per se illustrata
English: https://archive.org/details/english-by-the-nature-method
(I’ve personally used that textbook for french and absolutely loved its teaching style, it works Really Well for me).
Graded readers, if they teach new vocabulary in context, may also fall into this section (depending on learner’s starting level compared to a graded reader).
my only point here is just. i hate seeing valuable learning methods completely thrown away, just because someone’s decided to equate one person’s specific method as bad - to decide every single thing related to it must be useless. In this particular case - before Krashen was old enough to have any theories, Arthur Jensen was making some of those books listed above! (Back then it was called ‘the nature method’ - although plenty of books using the term ‘the nature method’ do not teach as comprehensibly as what I’ve listed above, there’s definitely a range from ‘these are just vocab lists’ to ‘these are actually slowly teaching me new words in context’ lol). and all those youtube channels for comprehensible input? There are learners who do find them useful! I’ve found them useful!
oh man just today... sometimes people will be like “you MUST use flashcards to learn a language” and hello no you absolutely don’t have to i never did with French. Some people say “you MUST use textbooks” and yet there’s examples of people who did fine without them, vice versa people say “you must NOT use textbooks if you want to sound natural’ or whatever which? Me using grammar guides has always been immensely useful for me personally - though again some people found success with Much more textbook use, and with none. So can we please accept different methods work for different people?! And beyond that - maybe some Pieces of methods are useful to someone EVEN if the ‘whole thing’ isn’t.
Mass Immersion Method/Refold - its not ‘all’ for me. I’m never ever going to sentence mine. I rarely use flashcards and I never plant to MAKE any myself lol. Have I still found some useful pieces of Refold that have benefited me? YES I have. (Notably the parts about ‘comprehensible input’ since we’re on the topic). What I took from what little i have heard from Krashen - in particular a lecture he gave on improving reading ability in students - is reading for pleasure, exposing yourself to a lot of material even if its not perfectly at your level, will help you improve. Students who learned word lists, and students encouraged to extensively read, both made vocabulary and reading level improvements. Which - we’ve been in elementary school and had ‘free reading time’ to help us learn to read better! By reading something we liked for a period of time! Besides just the books assigned in class the teacher had us do vocab lists for! Well, in my french studies I very much saw that apply to my own second language learning too - sometimes I looked up words as I read, and learned words that way. Sometimes I simply read french for pleasure and just guessed at unknown words I Could guess at and moved past others - and also improved my reading ability and picked up some new words. Both ways helped my french improve, my reading improve, my vocab improve. And so that is what I took from it - that there is some merit in engaging with something you can understand Somewhat at least. That if you have some comprehension of a material, you may be able to learn Some More from it whether you just learn from context OR conciously look up everything unfamiliar. (And I do think looking things up speeds up the process sometimes). My point though is like... we’re really gonna throw out some good pieces because we don’t like one person who’s managed to touch on them? When so many before and after, their own levels of correct and useless parts, have found some usefulness in some parts?
I just do not get language forum drama lol... the issue is. These people were arguing because they find krashen ‘useless’ then all comprehensible input study is ‘useless’. Ok then. But pushing to all learners to use only a textbook, and avoid engaging with actual language (even when it may be comprehensible and therefore useful to them like the links above, for some learners), then they may slow their progress if it doesn’t suit them well. And it always depends on the individual, everyone’s a bit different.
#reference#resources#comprehensible input#rant#half of this is a rant at how all or ntohing some learner forums can be feel free to ignore it#i just. so many ppl shoot themselves in the foot#cause theyd rather shit on other things and say their own plan is perfect#than consider maybe. people have different unique needs/ways of doing things#ive never found a method that 100% worked for me?#but i found lots of Pieces of mutliplte ones that did!

The Stars Made Us (Part 22)
Prompt: In this world, you’re one of the “lucky” ones who got a soulmate, but what if the universe gives you more than you bargained for?
(Prompt challenge – You live in a world where your soulmate can write on their skin and you will get the writing on your own and vice versa. Where they can wash away the ink on their own skin, however, the writing is forever scarred onto your skin until you meet face to face)
Word Count: 1921
Warnings: angst and language throughout
Notes: This was supposed to be for @sorryimacrapwriter and their challenge like a year ago, I think? I still loved the prompt though and have been working on this story for quite some time. This aesthetic was made by @dontshootmespence, thank you so much! Beta’d by @like-a-bag-of-potatoes, couldn’t have done it without you, as well as @carryonmyswansong and @arrow-guy and @mrs-dragneel-stark-solo
Also, I’ve never really liked the whole soulmate AU thing idea, but this felt so right and it was amazing to write. I hope y’all love it too!!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A week flew by and Stephen had read all of his materials. When he wasn’t reading one, you were reading it. You decided to go with him to the library to see if they would let you read some things.
“Mr. Strange and Ms. Y/L/N,” a man greeted politely.
“Uh… Stephen, please. And you are?”
“Wong,” he answered evenly.
“Wong. Just Wong? Like… Adele?” he joked and you couldn’t help but smile and laugh a tiny bit, trying to hide it. “Or… Aristotle. Drake. Bono. Eminem,” he continued to prattle off one named artists.
Wong took the books and examined them. “The Book of the Invisible Sun, Astronomia Nova, Codex Imperium, Key of Solomon. You finished all of this?” he asked, a bit incredulous.
“Yup,” he answered, knowing how it looked.
“Come with me.”
Stephen and you traded a look of intrigue before he said, “Alright.”
The two of you followed him into a room that sat down a few steps and every book was chained in a special book shelving unit.
“This section is for Masters only. But at my discretion, others may use it. We should start with Maxim’s Primer. How is your Sanskrit?” he asked as he walked around, gathering books.
“I’m fluent in Google Translate,” Stephen Responded and you shot him a look as if you were scolding him. He just shot you a smile.
Stephen found some books that seemed to be glowing and looked a bit more prestigious than the other books. When he asked about them, he was told they were the Ancient Ones private collection. Naturally, both you and Stephen assumed they were off limits and mentioned this to Wong. Wong said no knowledge is forbidden, only some practice. The only thing was the knowledge in those books were too powerful for anyone but the sorceress supreme to handle. Stephen pulled the book down and began reading. You glanced over his shoulder.
“That’s the book of Cagliostro. The study of time. One of the rituals was stolen by a former Master. A zealot called Kaecilius. Just after he strung up the former librarian, and relieved him of his head. I’m now the guardian of these books. So if a volume from this collection should be stolen again, I’d know it. And you’d be dead before you ever left the compound.”
You balked in response as Wong took the book back and refastened it in its chain holder. This Kaecilius seemed like a very bad character.
“What if it’s just overdue? You know? Any… late fees I should know about? Maiming, perhaps?”
You couldn’t help but snicker, trying to hide it, trying not to seem disrespectful
But Wong didn’t even make a face.
Stephen clearly thought the joke was funny and now felt uncomfortable from Wong’s hard gaze. “Uhm…Uh, you know, people used to think that I was funny.”
“Did they work for you?” Wong fired back and all laughing stopped. You made a face of surprise before laughing a lot louder now.
“Alright. Well, it’s been lovely talking to you, thank you for the books and for the horrifying story and for the threat upon my life.”Stephen and you gathered his books and began walking across the courtyard.
You were still laughing quietly.
“Shut up. You laughed too.”
“Yes, but you have to admit, he did catch you there.”
“I still think I’m funny.”
You pressed your lips together to keep from laughing and teasing him further.
-----------------------------------------
You stood in the courtyard, watching Stephen train with about twenty five or thirty other people. They were teaching him hand motions, how to move his body, how to clear his mind, and when it came time for him to cast magic, he was the only one in the group who couldn’t do it.
You felt sorry for him, but you also had a sense that he wasn’t giving his all to this. He was reading the literature, and he was attending all of the training, but he wasn’t connecting the two. He needed to connect with his soul, and he made it clear that he didn’t believe in that.
Later that night, when you two got done eating, Stephen started to head towards your bedroom but you began heading toward the courtyard.
“Where are you going?” he wondered.
You gestured with your head. “Come with me.” You swung by Master Mordo’s quarters and asked him to join you in the courtyard.
It was late at night, the moon hung high in the sky. It lit up the whole courtyard, as did flaming torches.
“Master Mordo, would you care to remind Stephen how to open up a portal?”
“Of course.” He walked over to the box of sling rings, opened them up, and gave one to Stephen. “Focus, visualize. Let yourself see the destination. See beyond what is right in front of you.”
Stephen nodded. “Got it, visualize it.” He held his left hand up, and spun his right hand. Only sparks appeared. He was already frustrated.
“Here,” you offered, holding out your hand. “May I try?” you asked both Mordo and Stephen at the same time.
Stephen gave you his ring and Mordo nodded. You slipped it on and thought of Charles’s kitchen. You focused, allowing yourself to really visualize being there, seeing the kitchen, smelling the smells… You held your left arm up, and began to use your right hand to spin in the air.
Sparks at first, and then, suddenly the sparks took shape, and made a circle, going bigger and bigger until you could see the entire kitchen. You couldn't believe you actually did it, so easily. You thought on your first try you’d fail, but you wanted to give it a go, to see if maybe you could unlock something to help Stephen with. But you never dreamed you get this close this fast. You were actually practicing sorcery, right this second and your mind couldn’t comprehend it, but you felt alive with promise and hope.
You were giddy with excitement both from the success of the spell and seeing a familiar sight, being this close to Charles.
“Very good, Y/N,” Mordo complimented. “How did you learn that so fast?”
“I’ve just been reading with Stephen. I applied what you said and what I’ve read.”
“How--How do you do that?” Stephen asked, stunned. “I’ve been trying for weeks and I can’t get anything and you try it one time for ten seconds and you can jump through portals?”
“I suppose the Ancient One was right about you.” He eyed you up and down. “I trust you to keep training him for this evening, hmm?”
You nodded. “Yes, Master Mordo.”
With that, he left, and you returned Stephen’s ring. “Here you go.”
“Teach me what you just did,” he ordered.
“I will, if you promise to open your mind.”
“I will. I am. Let’s just do this.”
You raised your brow, clearly not satisfied. “I’m serious, Stephen. If you don’t actually commit to this, believe in it, you won’t learn.”
“You don’t think I know that?” he barked at you and you gave him a stern look. He apologized. “I’m sorry. I know. Let’s try.”
And so you did, but he didn’t get much better. He still struggled, he still got frustrated. But you kept at it, night after night. You continued to bring him out into the moonlit courtyard and try to teach him in various ways to master the spells and magic he’d been taught. Sometimes it was from books you two had read, sometimes he had to really what the Ancient One had taught him.
But, despite your best efforts, his skill wasn’t improving. You felt like you were failing him and that caused a bout of guilt to build in you.
One night in your bedroom, you decided to take a break from practicing and get back to the literature.
“So, there you have it. What is a focal point?” you quizzed.
“A spot you focus intensely on. Come on, Y/N, really? We aren’t in undergrad getting quizzed for a final.”
“No, but clearly whatever I’m doing out there isn’t helping. Maybe if we just revisit the literature we’ll see something we missed.”
“We didn’t miss anything. I just can’t do this. My hands won’t work.”
“Stephen, it’s not about your hands--” you tried, exasperated.
“How is this not about my goddamn hands?” he questioned angrily and you sighed, taking a deep breath and closing your eyes.
“Alright. Okay, how about we take a break. Maybe this is too much, too fast. I’ve been like a drill sergeant and obviously that isn’t working.” You shut the book and put it on the desk behind you. “I’m sorry. I’m failing you.”
You hung your head in despair, wishing you could help, wishing you could do more.
“Hey,” Stephen said, putting his fingers under your chin. “You aren’t failing me. I’m failing you. You’re doing a lot here. I just can’t seem to get the hang of it, but that’s not your fault, it’s mine. Maybe if I wasn’t so stubborn.”
“Yeah, but then we’d have to wait for Hell to freeze over and we don’t have that kind of time.”
“Ooh, okay,” he responded with a bit of a chuckle. “Smartassed today, I see.”
“Just today? You’re slow on the game there, Sherlock.” You winked at him.
In an instant, the air changed.
For the first time since you met, the atmosphere wasn’t anything but tense, riddled with a desperate desire to break through the barrier of air that divided you and Stephen. Time stood still. All melted away. All you could see, smell, think about -- was the man in front of you.
He must’ve felt it too because his hand slowly moved from your chin to your hair, his other hand following suit. His eyes searched yours, for what, you weren’t sure. Permission perhaps, or perhaps he was trying to decide if he wanted to take this plunge. If he stepped over this line, he could never go back. He knew that this would almost surely bind you two. You would go from every other role you had held to -- his. All his. He was your soulmate, and you were his. This kiss would solidify everything he knew and everything he feared.
With your eyes searching his, you slowly raised your hands to wrap around his wrists. In a silent plea, you granted permission and he must’ve sensed the feeling in you because he didn’t waste another second.
His mouth crashed on yours and it felt as if it sent 1000 volts inside of you. His kiss spread out like the best medicine from your mouth to your toes. You saw stars behind your eyes and never imagined kissing him would feel this damned good. You never knew you needed this, but it was clear the instant it happened, that you in fact did.
He tasted almost warm, like spices used in baking. Clove, nutmeg, pepper.
Hunger seemed to ravage you both as you pressed more and more on each other.
All too soon, you pulled apart and he rested his forehead on yours briefly before kissing it, then rested his forehead against yours once more. Both of you were panting, smiling messes.
“I didn’t… expect that,” he admitted.
“The kiss?” you questioned.
“How...good and right it felt,” he clarified.
You pulled back, peering up at him with wondrous eyes before he pulled your face to him again, repeating the same amazing action.
Trial of Fire
Summary: After Tony’s trial, him and Michelle are given a couple hours to be alone.
Word Count: 4,611
Today was the day that would determine their future, she hadn’t been able to sleep at all though of course she had barely gotten any sleep since his arrest. She didn’t even flinch when her alarm went off at six, she reluctantly got out of bed and headed to the bathroom to take a shower and get ready for the long day ahead. The trial started at nine o’clock sharp.
After getting out of the shower, she took care of her hair so it wouldn’t be as crazy as it usually is, letting a few strands fall to frame her face. For her makeup, she went for an all natural look and waterproof mascara. She chose a black pencil skirt and a scarlet red blouse, red represented courage and if she ever needed courage, it was definitely today.
She was ready by a quarter till eight and went downstairs to find something to eat, not that she was hungry but because she hadn’t been able to eat either since his arrest. Not that she was even able to cook something without the risk of burning it. She was a shell of the woman she used to be and it had been less than a month since he’s been gone.
She visited him every weekend on Saturday’s at eight o’clock. She never missed one visit, it was the only time she was able to see him and it was through a glass, but it was something. Tony also took notice of the bags under her eyes and although she had always been petite, he could tell she was losing weight.
She finally decided on half a banana and a piece of toast before going to let their dog, Major, out to use the bathroom. The German Shepherd was a Christmas gift to Michelle for their one year wedding anniversary. At the time, Tony was working more than normal and he wanted Michelle to have someone with her while he was gone and so he went to the animal shelter, finding a puppy that he knew would be perfect for her.
After eating and giving the dog food and water, she was on her way out the door. She pulled into the parking lot ten minutes before the trial and taking deep breaths, she willed herself to go inside. Tony needed her and she could do this for him especially after he risked everything to save her, something she blamed herself for, but she couldn’t dwell on that right now.
She was surprised to find Jack, Kim, Chase, Adam, and even Chloe waiting inside. Jack was the first to approach her, giving her a gentle hug.
“You ready?”
No. “Yeah,” she gave him a small smile as they all walked through the doors to take a seat on the wooden benches. The judge walked in a few minutes after them followed by the prosecution and then Tony and his lawyer. He was dressed in clothes she had never seen before, but he was still her Tony.
The bailiff started to speak, “please rise. The Court of the Second Judicial Circuit, Criminal Division, is now in session, the honorable Judge Taylor presiding.”
They met eyes and time slowed down just for a second, it was just the two of them before the judge banged his gavel. The bailiff swore in the jury before the start of the trial.
“Members of the jury, your duty today will be to determine whether the defendant is guilty or not guilty based only on facts and evidence provided in this case. The prosecution has the burden of proving the guilt of the defendant beyond a reasonable doubt. This burden remains on the prosecution through the trial. The prosecution must prove that a crime was committed and that the defendant is the person who committed the crime. However, if you are not satisfied of the defendant’s guilt to that extent, then reasonable doubt exists and the defendant must be found not guilty.” Judge Taylor explained. “Mr. Anderson, what is today’s case?” He asked the bailiff.
“Your Honor, today’s case is The State of California versus Anthony Almeida,”he replied.
“How does the defendant plead?”
“Not guilty, your honor.”
“Is the prosecution ready?”
“Yes, your Honor,” the prosecutor stood up before taking his seat once more.
“Is the defense ready?”
“Yes, your Honor,” Tony’s lawyer replied.
After opening statements were made, it was time to call witnesses for each side.
“The prosecution would like to call Brad Hammond to the stand.”
Michelle turned around to see Brad strolling through the doors, a smirk plastered across his face.
The bailiff swore him in before the examination started. “Please raise your right hand. Do you swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth?”
Brad replied with, “I do.”
“You have evidence that the defendant, Anthony Almeida, committed treason against the United States of America to save his wife, correct?”
“Yes. We found out after Jane Saunders had been taken out of CTU and later found to be with Agent Almeida. We also had Stephen Saunders surrounded until Tony called the field teams to tell them to move positions to give Saunders a chance to escape. We took him into custody after Jack Bauer headed up teams to capture Saunders.”
“And he put millions of lives at risk in order to save one by doing so.”
“Correct, Division had always been weary of inter office relationships, but when Tony and Michelle came to us saying they had been in a relationship and said they would be able to keep their personal and professional lives separate, we believed them, I believed them and that was my mistake.”
“That’s all I have for this witness.”
Tony’s lawyer was next. “Are you married Mr. Hammond?”
“Objection!” The prosecution called out.
“It goes to show my clients thoughts.”
“Overruled, but tread carefully Mr. Wilson.”
“Yes, I’m married.” Hammond replied.
“And you love your wife?”
“Of course I love my wife.”
“Would it be safe to say that you would do anything you could to keep her safe?”
“I- yeah, I suppose.”
“That’s exactly what Mr. Almeida did that day. He did what any person would do for the person they loved. He acted as any husband would act in a situation like that and he shouldn’t be blamed or be put in jail for being human.”
“But he put millions of people at risk by doing that!”
“No one died. No one was hurt in the process and that’s what matters. Not what could’ve happened.”
“But-” he tried to say something, anything else to help the prosecution.
“No further questions.”
“The defense calls Jack Bauer to the stand.” Jack squeezed Michelle’s shoulder before going up to take a seat.
The bailiff swore him in before the examination started. “Please raise your right hand. Do you swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth?”
“I do,” Jack said.
“You and Mr. Almeida have worked together for some time, would you consider him a friend?”
“Yeah, we both went through a lot and he was there after my wife died. Our jobs are extremely stressful and dangerous and it’s nice to have friends who can understand that.”
“I’m sorry about your wife, but speaking of her, didn’t you too have to put your wife above other people?”
“Yes.”
“And you think what Mr. Almeida did is justified?”
“I do. No one got hurt by his actions, he was trying to protect his wife and I would’ve done the same thing if I was in his shoes.
“Thank you, no further questions.”
The prosecutor stood up, taking a minute to think of his next questions. “You agree with everything Agent Almeida did? What if innocent lives had been lost?”
“I can’t answer that seeing as it didn’t happen.”
“What if it had?”
“It’s a hypothetical question to which I have no answer for,” Jack said, holding his ground.
“No further questions.”
Each party called more witnesses: analysts, techs, anyone they could think of to improve their case. The judge called a recess around lunch time and Michelle reluctantly followed the others out to go eat somewhere even though she wasn’t hungry. She locked eyes with Tony until the guards pulled him away.
“It’s going pretty good, right?” Kim asked and everyone agreed, but Michelle couldn’t shake this gut feeling she had. It felt like even as good as they think things were going, it wouldn’t be good enough.
She had ordered a salad and she was pushing it around with her fork while the others were eating and Jack noticed. When they finished eating and started to head back to the courthouse, Jack pulled her aside for a minute.
“Are you okay?” He asked after hesitating.
“I just… I have a bad feeling about today. If he goes to prison… it’ll be all my fault and I don’t know if I could live knowing I put my husband in there. Out of everyone, Tony doesn’t deserve this. He’s spent his life putting away terrorists and protecting his country and this is how they repay him? It’s not fair.”
“I know, trust me I know, but Tony needs you to be strong for him right now and that means we can’t be thinking about what will happen if he’s convicted, we have to hope it doesn’t come to that.”
“I know, I feel so helpless though, Jack. I want to help him but how?”
“You can testify on his behalf, tell them what an amazing husband he is and how much he loves his job. Are you ready to beat this thing?”
That sinking feeling came back, but she pushed it away and plastered a smile on, “yeah, I’m ready.”
Back in the courtroom, it was her turn to take the stand. When the prosecution called her name, she stood up on wobbly knees and tried to get her nerves under control to no avail.
The bailiff swore her in before the examination started. “Please raise your right hand. Do you swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth?”
“I do,” the two words tasting bitter on her tongue at the moment. Two words that once meant a promise to each other were now being used against them.
“Miss Dessler-“
“It’s Mrs. Almeida, I keep Dessler at work to avoid confusion between me and Tony.”
“Mrs. Almeida,” he started again, “how long have you and Mr. Almeida been married?”
“Three years, but we’ve been together just a little over four years.”
“And during that time have you and Mr. Almeida ever been put into a situation where one of you is in danger?”
“Yeah.”
“But both of you were always fine, minor injuries if anything so why was the day in question any different? You’re sitting here in front of the court today with no physical injuries shown. I’m trying to understand why your husband had to put millions of lives at stake, people in this very room could’ve died because of his actions, but you were his priority. He ignored the oath he took to protect this country and its people to save you. Do you see the problem?” He asked as if she was a child.
“Tony did what he thought was right at the time, he did what anyone would do for the person they love. It was an unprecedented situation. Take his job, make sure he never works for the government again, but don’t take his life away. He’s done so much for this country, he was a marine, he fights to protect this country every day from terrorists and the one time he does something wrong, he’s threatened with prison. I’ll say it again, no one was hurt by his actions, not one person was even put in danger.”
“You say this was an unprecedented situation, but aren't unprecedented situations a part of your jobs? Can you pinpoint when the next terrorist attack is going to be? Are you going to immediately know how to deal with the next attack? Let’s take the Cordilla virus as an example, that was unprecedented and you led the team inside that hotel. You set up command and took charge, you reassured the guests, you got them suicide pills to end their suffering, you shot a man who was trying to leave the premises. All of that was unprecedented and yet, you were able to deal with it.”
“I wasn’t threatened with the idea of my husband having his eye cut out. I can’t speak to what Tony was feeling or what was going through his head, but I know how scared he must’ve been, how scared anyone would’ve been in that situation.”
“You can be scared without putting lives at risk, agent. People doubted your ability to work with your husband and keep your professional and personal lives separate and maybe if you had listened to them, you or Tony wouldn’t be here right now. So who’s fault is it really?” He mumbled the last sentence for only her to hear.
“Objection, badgering the witness.” The defense called out.
“Withdrawn. No further questions.” He said before the judge could say anything. “Your witness.”
“Mrs. Almeida, it’s obvious you love your husband smd that he loves you. How do you feel about his actions?”
No one had asked her that and she was thrown off guard for a split second. “He saved my life,” she met his eyes as she spoke. “I’m eternally grateful for him and if I ever had any doubts about how much he loved me, I would look back at what he did.”
“No further questions.” He gave her a small smile to put her at ease, but her eyes were still locked on Tony’s.
“The next person we call to the stand is Anthony Almeida.
The bailiff swore him in before the examination started. “Please raise your right hand. Do you swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth?”
“I do.” He responded firmly.
“It’s been made clear how much you love your wife, it’s admirable really. You hear how people say they will do anything for the person they love, but a lot of the time they can’t prove it but you’re one of the few who did. Would you do it again?”
“Yes,” he replied without hesitation. “She’s my whole world and as long as she’s safe, I don’t care what happens to me. I’m glad no one got hurt by what I did but it doesn’t change the fact I’d do it all over again if I had to.”
A few more questions later after the defense was satisfied with his answers, it was the prosecution's turn.
“You love your wife, correct?”
“Yes.”
“At any point while she was inside the Chandler Plaza Hotel did you ever tell her you loved her?”
“No, it was implied through every conversation we had. Michelle knows I love her, if I say it or not but at work we keep it professional.”
“Professional? You call kidnapping Jane Saunders in order to trade her for your wife professional behavior? You didn’t tell your wife you loved her after claiming that you do and on top of all that, you said you would do it all again.”
“Stop right there. You can question my loyalty, you can put me in prison for the rest of my life, you can do whatever the hell you want, but don’t ever question my love for my wife. She has been through hell and back and she’s saved me in more ways than one. She is the only thing I look forward to after a twenty four hour shift when we’re both on the verge of collapsing from exhaustion but she’ll smile at me and everything is okay again. There isn’t anything I wouldn’t do for her. I would do anything to keep her safe even if it meant putting myself in danger. She is my life and you can take me away from her, but it won’t change a damn thing.”
“No further questions, the prosecution rests, your Honor.”
“The defense also rests, your Honor.”
“Members of the jury, you have heard all of the testimony concerning this case. It is now up to you to determine the facts. You and you alone, are the judges of the fact. Once you decide what facts the evidence proves, you must then apply the law as I give it to you to the facts as you find them,” the judge said, his attention directed to the jurors.
Tony went back to his seat, anger evident in his body language. After closing statements, it was time for the jury to deliberate. His fate was now in the hands of complete strangers.
A long two hours later, they came back with a verdict.
“Have you reached a verdict?” The judge asked.
“We have, your Honor,” the jury foreperson responded.
“What say you?”
“We the jury, in the case of The State of California versus Anthony Almeida find the defendant guilty of the charge of treason against the United States of America.”
She swore she felt her heart stop once the words left her mouth. Tears welled up in her eyes which she refused to let fall in front of everyone.
“Thank you, jury, for your service today. Court is adjourned.”
“No, no you can’t do this,” she shouted before realizing what she was doing. Jack gently grabbed her and guided her out into the hall where she let her tears fall freely.
“They can’t… they can’t do this Jack, not after everything he’s done. I can't… I can’t breathe,” her chest was rising up and down rapidly, her breathing heavy. The signs of a beginning panic attack.
“Breath with me, Michelle,” he took deep breaths and she followed his lead until her breathing went back to normal.
“I need to see him,” she started to head back through the doors before he stopped her.
“They’re not going to let you see him right now, they have to book him and in a couple hours they’ll let you but until then, we have to wait,” he explained calmly.
“This is bullshit and you know it. They’re not even going to let us be alone and twenty years, Jack, twenty fucking years. That’s how long they’re taking him away for. It’s not right, it’s not fair.”
“I know Michelle, but Tony needs you right now and you need him. You can still visit and trust me, I know it’s not the same but it’s something and that’s what you have to remember.”
“What do we do now?”
“We wait, I’ll try talking to some guards I know to see if the two of you can have some privacy, but I’m not promising anything.”
“Okay, thank you Jack.”
He shot her a smile, “it’s the least I can do, until then, just try to relax.”
Jack drove them to Federal Correctional Institute where his sentence was to be held out. The building looming in the distance reminded her of everything they were going to lose in a few short minutes.
“I’m gonna go talk to my friend inside and I’ll come get you when I’m done.”
She nodded her head while looking blankly ahead. This didn’t feel real, she wanted to wake up from whatever nightmare she was currently in. She didn’t know how much time had passed when she saw Jack heading back towards the SUV.
“You have three hours, it’s all I could get and I convinced them to give you privacy and I’ll be right outside the door if you need anything.”
“Does he know?”
“No, I think he’d like to hear it from you more.”
“Thank you Jack.”
He smiled in response. They headed inside the building and passed through security. Jack led her down a hall lined with cells on either side until arriving in front of a holding cell that provided privacy.
“He’s in there?” She asked nervously.
“Yeah.”
Jack opened the door to reveal Tony in an orange jumpsuit. “Jack, how’s Miche- Michelle?” Shock was etched in his voice at seeing her in front of him.
“Hi,” she smiled, the first real smile he’s seen.
“Hey.” They stood there staring at each other until the initial shock wore off and in the next second, he was wrapping his arms around her. Tears flowed down over her cheeks, the feeling of his arms around her was comforting, something she would never take for granted again.
“What are you doing here, sweetheart?”
“I needed to see you. I can’t believe this is all happening and it’s all my fault and I’m sorry, Tony, I’m so sorry.”
“Oh, Michelle, I don’t blame you. Like I told you earlier, you’re alive and I can live with that. Promise me that you won’t blame yourself?”
“I promise,” her voice slightly wavered.
“How did you manage to get back here?”
“Jack, he talked to some friends he had inside and he got us three hours alone and I know it’s not a lot but-”
He cut her off. “It’s perfect.”
He led her over to one of the chairs in the room and sat down, pulling her onto his lap.
“I missed you,” he said, burying his face in the crook of her neck, breathing her scent in as to memorize it.
“I’m so, so sorry, Tony,” she cried softly. “This is all my fault, you wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for me or if I had waited for the hazmat suits and all those people… those agents… Gael… are dead because of me. I shouldn’t have listened to Jack when he told me to go back. We were so close.”
“You can’t think like that, Michelle. I meant what I said in court, I would choose you over and over because I love you and I am incredibly grateful that no one was hurt by my actions. You made all the right decisions today and I know you don’t think so, but you helped so many people today and the people who died today, Gael, they will be remembered as heros. You saved even more lives today by listening to Jack. I can live here knowing that you’re safe and alive. I almost lost you twice today and you’re still here which is more than I could ask for. And Michelle-”
“Don’t, please,” she begged, cutting him off because she knew him well enough to know what he was going to say next.
“I just want you to be happy, even if you find that it’s not with me in five, ten years. You deserve nothing but the best and I won’t be able to offer you that and I just want you to have that option, if you ever need it and I want you to know that you don’t have to feel bad if that moment ever comes.” he finished.
“Tony, please, I can’t… I can’t talk about that right now. We don’t have long and I don’t want to spend that time talking about-”
“I know, sweetheart. I have so much to say and I just- I thought I had forever to say it, but now,” he glanced at the clock, “I have two and a half hours.”
They spent the next couple hours talking about anything and everything that came to mind: their wedding day, visits with each of their families, all the different things they loved about each other, the day they met, their first date, the night he proposed, the might he brought Major home, holidays they spent together, the day they moved into their house, memories that they only knew and treasured.
But time was quickly running out.
The guard had come to notify them that they only had thirty minutes left.
They spent a few minutes sitting in silence, soaking in each other's warmth and closeness.
“I don’t know how to do this without you, I can’t go home knowing that you’re here and-”
“You’re going to go home and do the best you can, alright? I know it won’t be easy, but you have to try to eat and get some sleep. It’ll be hard for awhile, for both of us, but we’ll get through it. We survived a bomb, a nuclear bomb, World War Three, a virus, and we’re still here. A twenty year sentence doesn’t seem too bad after that,” he said jokingly and when it seemed impossible, she started to laugh.
“We have survived far worse.”
Two guards walked in after that and all hints of smiling and laughter were now gone.
Time was up.
Tears started to form in her hazel eyes and his chest tightened. “We’re gonna get through this.”
“I know,” she replied. “This is hard.” she choked out, her voice breaking.
“I know, baby. I know.” He helped her stand up before getting up himself and wrapped his arms around her, placing kisses on the top of her head. “I love you so much.”
“I love you so much, Tony.”
He pulled back, cupping her face in his hands and kissed her passionately, pouring out his emotions. After the kiss ended, he reluctantly let her go and a guard came up behind him.
He walked him out and with one last glance at her, he disappeared from her view.
“I’m sorry,” the other guard offered apologetically and she knew it wasn’t just because their time was up. She just nodded at him in response, talking right now was too hard. He led her out to the parking lot where she met Jack in his SUV.
He didn’t say anything, not like he had to, he could only imagine what she was feeling right now. They spent the twenty minute drive to their house in complete silence and when he pulled into their driveway, she thanked him quietly before getting out.
“Hey,” he called after her softly. “Let me know if you need anything.”
“Thanks, Jack,” she offered a small smile before heading inside and the first thing she noticed was the quietness. Her and Tony would always walk through the door smiling and laughing, even after a tough day. Even if one of them got home first, it was never quiet. Family and friends would come over on their days off or on the weekends. The house was always filled with love and happiness, but now… but now it was completely silent.
The silence was going to be the hardest part of coming home. She walked up the stairs leading to their bedroom to find Major asleep in the middle of the bed.
She undressed and put on one of his shirts and a pair of his sweatpants that engulfed her small frame. The lingering smell of his cologne relaxed her a little bit and she climbed into the bed that was way too big for one person. Major woke up and moved his head to lick her face. He was a baby when it came to Michelle and every night, he was snuggled up behind her and tonight was no different.
She didn’t know what the future held, but for now, she would try to get some sleep like she promised and would go back to the prison to visit him as soon as possible. The time they had together earlier was enough for now and she drifted off into the first real sleep she’s had in a month.
There was still hope and until there wasn’t any left, she wasn’t going to give up on him.
∞So here’s a headcanon that I’ve been meaning to put into words for a long while but have never taken the time to. But I’m going to put it under a cut because it has to do with the details of Stephen’s accident and the medical trauma he survived therein.
This is specifically based off of the 2016 film (which I also think did a spectacular job of justifying the crash, btw - road conditions, model of car, impact points and all), but I’ll toss in a few cents about how comic iterations in previous generations might be different just for shits ad giggles and because I love shit like this.
First and foremost, especially working from the earliest DS comic canon, the cars were of the age and variety of “screaming metal death-trap.” Seatbelts weren’t required by law in the 1960s, and in fact many cars didn’t even come with them from the manufacturers because they weren’t considered a safety requirement. Granted they were made of hard body steel and could take impacts well by virtue of being fucking tanks, but the tire quality and torque ratios were... not made for the speeds they could suddenly get to, which did top out at 80-110 mph (in luxury models) with suspensions that were not clement for sustaining speed and road grip at the same time. It was statistically common that even non-reckless driving could result in horrible injuries under the wrong circumstances, therefore. Add in a 1960s inflated male ego, and frankly it’s amazing Stephen didn’t just die. Which is the entire plot point, I’ll grant. I also headcanon that in that era (and even regarding modern Stephen’s collector’s dream cars) Stephen would likely have been in a Rolls Royce Phantom or a Cadillac Coupe de Ville. He would definitely have his eye on a Jaguar E-Type (still does), but back in the 1960s maintaining one would have been more trouble than it was worth even by his standards and budget.
All that aside, let’s talk about the crash in the 2016 Doctor Strange movie. First and foremost, the overall accident itself is totally feasible for the model of car Stephen was driving. Lamborghini and other luxury super-car manufacturers have exceedingly specific impact testing, which is focused - unfortunately - more for track condition impacts than civilian driving conditions. In essence, super cars are built to handle rolling and lateral shear impacts to frankly insane degrees. They are not, however, well built for head-on collisions by nature of the priority of aerodynamics in the design. This feeds into why the Lamborghini in particular was undoubtedly an active choice on behalf of the producers. What’s notable about the crash is that in spite of the glance off of the side of the other car, the Lamborghini stays relatively solidly on the road surface which is design accurate. (There’s actually an entire other tangent I could get off on about this, but I will refrain.) Where things go haywire, however, is where that glancing blow hit on the vehicle. Now with many super-car companies, they mount the engine in the “trunk” of the vehicle, which improves traction and opens up space for the frankly insanely large engine blocks that, oh, I don’t know, V12s require. This pushes the cabin toward the front of the vehicle, and leaves the “trunk” space on the front end where most standard cars keep the engine. This makes the front light, but because of air intake and drag it maintains traction via the aerodynamics of the front grille. The back also has improved traction from the weight of the engine sitting over the rear axel, which is a big additive benefit because most sports cars are rear-wheel drive, and in front-engine vehicles this makes the back axel lighter and prone to fish-tailing on tight corners. Not so with Stephen’s Lamborghini. In essence, the weight of the vehicle sits on the axel that bears the drivetrain.
That rear traction is precisely what makes everything go wrong for this particular crash. Because the weight of the vehicle and the wheel drive are all centered in the back, having that portion of the vehicle get bumped is like flicking a coin to get it spinning. The front end of the vehicle, which is substantially lighter and only has the steering column and brakes to counter the inertia of that rear engine, is abjectly disadvantaged for regaining control of the vehicle. Even the most experienced racer doesn’t have the reaction time to regain control on a two-lane mountain highway, in the rain, at night, from an accident that realistically takes less than 10 seconds from impact to exit through the guard rail. In essence, there was zero chance of Stephen being able to recover as soon as the front end of the vehicle impacted the rock wall and put the car’s trajectory onto “death frisbee” instead of “manageable swerve.”
This is also the second instance where the super-car design seals Stephen’s fate. So because Lamborghinis have an empty front end - again the “trunk” is where the engine is on most other cars, so essentially empty, un-structured, un-reinforced space - head on collisions absolutely crush the front ends. This also explains and in fact makes viable why Stephen’s hands go through the dash in the compound impacts: the front end is getting folded in like a tin can.
Now we get to the dark and scary medical part of the accident. Obviously the accident was catastrophically bad considering the car careened off of a steep mountain slope and impacted all the way down until it reached the river at the bottom of the ravine. But as we saw from the post-accident scenes, Stephen’s injuries weren’t isolated to his hands only. As was made clear from the state of his face, he definitely had cranial trauma - to the point that it seems very lucky he didn’t lose his left eye - which involved contusions at least to the orbit of his left eye and very probably a concussion, and it seems all but impossible that he didn’t also have thoracic and potentially leg trauma as well. Thoracic either from directly impacting the steering column (which I find very likely), or impacting the door (feasible, and does feed into why I think his left hand is worse off than his right, given from the production stills his left hand has eight - five pins and three plates - of the eleven in his hands). He definitely would have had broken ribs and internal bruising or bleeding from those impacts. The leg injuries are also probable for drivers especially because of impact against the dash and steering column.
Now we start getting to the painful part. Yes, just now. So as Christine mentions after Stephen regains consciousness (probably not for the first time but probably the first time cogently), the “Golden Hours” passed while he was in the car waiting for the mercy flight crew to find him. Now, the Golden Hours is actually the Golden Hour - it’s the span of 60 minutes immediately following intense trauma and injury. So not only was Stephen upside down, in and out of consciousness, alone, half-submerged in a river, in a car that could blow at any moment, for more than an hour, it surpassed the hour that was most vital to his potential for nerve recovery. It’s also frankly astounding that Stephen didn’t die from shock, hypovolemia, or hypothermia during the hours it took for them to find him. I will also just mention in passing that jaws of life situations are touchy enough as is with cars, but with someone as injured as Stephen was, in the exceedingly precarious position his car was in, the emergency responders would have had a hard fucking time getting him out alive at all.
But wait, there’s more! So after all of this, he has to get flown back to New York where the actual work of saving his ass begins. And again, I will emphasize that it’s unavoidable that Stephen - who was canonically on the table for ELEVEN HOURS - was not only in surgery for his hands. As a matter of fact, medically his hands would have been the lesser of many priorities. They would have spent some preliminary time trying to make sure his circulation was intact, but to be frank, amputation is a safer, viable option for hands, and they would have openly made that choice on his behalf and prioritized any cranial or thoracic injury. Hell, even prioritize saving his eye, because the trauma of eye removal/optic nerve disruption has a greater chance for fatality than amputation. So Stephen’s hands didn’t just lose the Golden Hour, but would not have gotten operated on for up to three to five additional hours, and that’s under-estimating the complexity his other, higher priority traumas.
Put it all together and what do you get? A man that, by rights, shouldn’t be alive at all. And who, rather than valuing the life that he got to still have, held it against himself that he could no longer inhabit the life he’d had.
Secondarily, in light of all of the above and the seven consecutive surgeries that Stephen put himself through, you can absolutely bet your lunch money that this man developed an addiction to pain medication. It takes the body up to six months to filter out anesthetic, and given Stephen surely pushed his surgery scheduling to be more quick than advisable for recovery, his endocrine system would have been in free fall. To say nothing of the fact that the only way to deal with that much invasive surgery isn’t just eating healthy and hydrating...
Also please never forget that Stephen’s intern, Billy, was on the phone with him when the crash happened. So Billy was absolutely the one that made the call, and was undoubtedly sitting there, watching the clock as the Golden Hour slipped by and Stephen’s chances of survival dwindled by the second.
Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.∞
Lets start with the book review
DISCLAIMER
RENEE KNIGHT
BOOK REVIEW
ARUNIMA PUNDIR
July 27, 2021
‘A perfect, stunning, psychological thriller’.
Imagine you come across a book which contains your darkest secret and you are the main character of the book. A secret you have told none and had buried deep at the back of your head for the past twenty years, the secret, the series of events which took place years ago are facing you again, looking dead into your eyes. What would you do?
Disclaimer by Renee Knight wrote a perfect psychological thriller which will grip you till the end of the book. ‘Disclaimer’ is my third psychological thriller book and after reading it my interest in this genre has increased even more.
Catherine is a talented filmmaker of documentaries and is leading a very happy and contended life with her husband Robert, a very kind, understanding and a loving husband; her son Nicholas who is twenty-five years and has finally moved in his own apartment independently and is having a successful career.
What more can Catherine wish for?
What Catherine dint realise is a book she found on her nightstand when her family was moving into a new apartment from her old one. Catherine dint remember buying any novel at that time, but decides to keep it. While reading the book the disclaimer clearly says that “Any resemblance to person living or dead”. Catherine enjoys reading the first few pages but as she precedes Catherine realises that she is the key character, the main player of the book and only the name has been changed.
After twenty years of keeping a dark secret, a secret not even her husband or her son knew, a secret no one should know except her and the dead one, the secret which she had protected for a long time is now being unravel by a person she dint knew.
There is no author of the book- no reviews. Seems as if she will be the first one to read it.
Stephen Bradstockwho is an old grieving widower is building up a plan to take revenge. He took an early retirement, after his wife died. One day he was going through his wife’s belongings, which he wanted to dispose trying to overcome her death. In one of the purses which was hidden deep inside the closet, contained old photographs, photos of a young women in obscene poses, but the fact what disturbed the old man was that he knew who had taken these pictures.
Stephen further finds a manuscript written by his late dead wife, Nancy, which even tells about the last days of her son, Jonathan, a nineteen-year old who loved travelling and adventures. She also reveals how her son died due to drowning while trying to rescue a little kid. Stephen converts Nancy’s manuscript into a self- published book not for the public but only for a few selected people. The book was a like a lethal weapon which aimed for a specific target only and Stephen knew who was the target and when it should be aimed at that particular person only.
Stephen first sends the book to Catherine along with the photographs. Scared to death that her darkest secret is being exposed she tries to burn the book along with the photographs. Robert catches her and further realises that there is something in that book that bothers Catherine a lot. There are many occasions where Catherine nearly tells Robert everything about her secret but backs up. She cannot force herself to reveal the secret she had kept with herself for twenty years, not all of a sudden. It’s her secret and it her wish to decide whether to keep it or to tell. the
Stephen not knowing the complete story, complete secrets, complete incidents believed in everything written in the manuscript which even Nancy wrote with her own imagination. Stephen burns with rage to take revenge. Robert’s obsession to destroy Catherine’s life makes him believe that even Nancy’s spirit is supporting him in his decisions.
Not quite satisfied by Catherine’s response he further sends the book and the photographs to her husband, Robert. Robert after reading the book and seeing the photographs is horrified, speechless and refuses to listen to Catherine who tries to explain what mentioned in the book is not fully true, but due to jealousy, anger and rage he decides to leave home. He cannot bear to see Catherine in front of her eyes. He is raged by the fact that Catherine had hidden this truth from him for twenty years even when he was her husband and was fully loyal and devoted to their relationship.
But what happens next is an unexpected turn and a very plotted twisty twist. Both the lives of Stephen’s and Catherine’s changes as the real truth slowly unfolds and their relation changes.
Disclaimer by Renee Knight is an obsessive read, a book full of emotions and suspense which will grip you till the end of the book. One will keep on wanting to know, what is the real secret Catherine had been hiding from them.
Hope you will read this amazing book, and this book review turned out to be helpful
Avengers Valentine’s Fic: Six Hands are Better than Two
Read it on AO3!
--------
When her cup of tea was ready, Pepper carried it over to the table and sat down. She took a careful, too-hot sip, then set her cup down and looked at the tablet sitting in front of her. This was it. The moment of truth. Despite of her nerves, her hands remained remarkably steady as she picked up the tablet and unlocked it. The first file opened seamlessly, and she scanned it with a critical eye.
She knew exactly what she was looking for. The biggest issue was finding it. The first few she dismissed out of hand due to various health problems. The fifth file showed a man with blond hair; she lingered over that one for a minute before flicking past, knowing that she would prefer someone with darker hair. The sixth was passed over for the same reason. Then she landed on the seventh, showing a striking man with dark brown hair, blue eyes, and a broad smile with straight, white teeth.
“Not him. Too much like a movie star.”
Pepper shrieked and jumped about a foot in the air. “Tony! What the hell?!”
Tony laughed as he sat down beside her, close enough to steal the tablet but out of range of any punches. “I asked JARVIS to tell me when you started looking at the profiles,” he said smugly. “I wanted to see too.”
“JARVIS, you traitor,” Pepper muttered without any heat.
“My apologies, Ms. Potts, but Sir was most persuasive.”
Knowing what that meant, Pepper shook her head. “Tony, you have got to stop threatening to sell them to MIT,” she said, exasperated. “One of these days JARVIS is going to take you seriously and have himself voluntarily moved, and then where will you be?”
“J loves me too much for that,” Tony said dismissively, continuing to flick through. “Is this really all you have to choose from? Slim pickings.”
Pepper sighed and rested her cheek on her hand. “Well, fewer men are donating sperm now,” she said frankly. “People are nervous about having biological children showing up on their doorstep in twenty years.” She could appreciate that fear, but it made this process no less frustrating.
When she had first decided that she wanted a baby, Pepper had thought long and hard about her choices. As an aromantic woman, she had absolutely zero interest in a relationship. She liked sex – was rather good at sex, actually – but that was about the extent of it. And no one night stand or frequent booty call was going to agree to have a baby with her without bringing feelings into the mix. Eventually they’d want more: they’d want a relationship, the whole 2.5 kids and white picket fence, and the thought made her skin crawl.
No romance. No relationships. Just a kid. That was harder to get than she had anticipated. She had done quite a bit of research into adoption, but every place she had reached out to had unapologetically informed her that they were reluctant to adopt a child to a single woman. She probably could’ve paved the way by throwing money at the situation, but she was loathe to do that when she’d already be facing a ton of media scrutiny as it was.
There was also surrogacy as an option, but Pepper was more than willing to carry the baby herself. It was Rhodey who had suggested that she go to a donation clinic. Pepper hadn’t seen any harm in looking to see what was available; she wasn’t committing herself just by looking. But she hadn’t anticipated how lackluster it would be. Did she really want to choose the father of her child like she’d pick out a pair of shoes?
Well, no. Of course she didn’t. But she was running out of options – and time. She was turning thirty-five after this year, so she was approaching the threshold where pregnancies were a higher risk. She was already aware she was probably only going to do this once, so she had to make it count. This was the best resort. She held a hand out for the tablet back, but Tony shook his head.
“Seriously, Pep, you don’t have to go with one of these losers,” he said.
“Then how else am I supposed to make it happen? I am not interested in a relationship,” Pepper said, a bit more forcefully than was necessary considering who she was talking to, but she was so damn sick of having to repeat herself. People thought there was something wrong with a woman who didn’t want a relationship. There was a reason she and Tony had covered for each other for as long as they did.
“I know you’re not,” Tony said, far more kindly than she deserved, and Pepper’s shoulders slumped.
“Sorry. I didn’t mean to bite your head off,” she said. Out of everyone, Tony knew exactly what it was like to fall short of people’s expectations. He had cultivated a reputation as a slut early on to keep people from figuring out that the infamous Tony Stark had no interest in sex: he would bring drunk women home with him and then put them to bed. Anyone who remembered going to bed alone never wanted to admit that Tony hadn’t slept with them, so they’d make up stories. And she was pretty sure the sex tapes had been faked.
After Afghanistan, when Tony could no longer bear the idea of bringing strangers home, he and Pepper had officially become a couple to give them both some relief. Unofficially Pepper had cultivated a few discreet fuck buddies, while Tony had been content to remain alone. Their agreement had worked very well to keep them both from being bothered by the media, or worse hunted by prospective partners, until Tony met Dr. Stephen Strange.
Pepper had seen the writing on the wall from the moment they returned home from the fight on Titan, having been victorious. Stephen looked at Tony like Tony was something precious, and Tony’s eyes lit up whenever Stephen walked into a room. Naturally, the two of them had awkwardly danced around each other for a few months before Pepper got impatient and forced them to talk it out.
“That’s okay. I get it. Hell, no one gets it better than me,” Tony said. He set the tablet down and looked at her seriously. “What if I offered to do it?”
Her eyebrows jumped. “You’re gonna have sex with me. You.”
“Eww, no,” Tony said, making a face. “But I’d happily donate some of my sperm to the cause. Stephen says that the whole process is way more advanced than it used to be, but that there’s plenty of room for improvement… maybe he and I will take a look at it and see if we can’t figure something out.”
“If anyone could do it, it would be you too,” Pepper said, still reeling from the offer. “You… you’d seriously want a baby?”
“I’ve been thinking about it. I know you and I didn’t work out, but I still think any kid of ours would be awesome.” Tony gave a small smile that quickly faded as he added, “I mean, I understand if you don’t want to. I’ll probably end up being a shitty dad –”
“Tony, no. That’s not it. Anyone who sees you with Peter knows you’re a wonderful dad,” Pepper said immediately.
“It’s not really the same,” Tony mumbled, looking embarrassed.
“Yes, it is and you know it. He literally calls you and Stephen ‘dad’,” Pepper pointed out.
“But we didn’t raise him,” Tony said. He shook his head. “Anyway, I just wanted you to know that the offer is there if you’re interested.”
Pepper hummed softly. “What did Stephen say?”
“He’s okay with it. You can talk to him about it if you want to, which you probably should.”
“He’s ready to be a parent?” Pepper asked. “Or are you just looking to make a donation and that’s all?”
“No, we want to be parents with you. Midnight feedings and all. You could move into a room on our floor, and we can set the baby up in the room between us and you. That way, we can help equally. And you’d still be able to go back to your floor when you needed a break,” Tony explained, sounding adorably eager.
“You’re really serious about this,” Pepper said, amazed. At one time, Tony hadn’t been sure that he wanted to be a father at all. That was all Howard Stark’s influence as far as Pepper was concerned. She knew that Tony would be a great dad, but Tony was petrified that he was going to turn out like his father. Having Peter around had done wonders for Tony’s confidence in that regard.
“I am… but only if you’re okay with it. I get that it could be awkward or uncomfortable,” Tony said. “I mean… Stephen and I would still be Avengers and everything.” He looked up uncertainly.
“Let me think about it,” Pepper said slowly. “Is that okay?”
“Sure. Take all the time you need.” He stood up, passed her the tablet, and ambled causally out of the room. Only someone who knew him well, like Pepper did, could recognize how tense he was as he went. He really, really wanted this, she realized.
“JARVIS, have Tony and Stephen really talked about this?” Pepper asked.
“Yes, Ms. Potts. In great detail,” JARVIS replied. “Dr. Strange has just arrived home. Would you like to speak with him?”
“Please,” Pepper said. She believed Tony when he said that Stephen was okay with this, but she wanted to be sure before she even started considering this. She didn’t want a baby to be the thing that came between Tony and the only person he’d ever seriously fallen in love with.
It was only a few minutes before Stephen joined her in the kitchen. He was wearing his uniform, minus the Cloak, and looked tired. Pepper waved him to the table and got up to make herself another cup of tea. She also poured one for Stephen. Unlike Tony, who might as well have had coffee in his veins considering how much of the stuff he drank, Stephen preferred tea. When she turned around, Stephen had picked up the tablet and was flipping through the profiles. Pepper rolled her eyes.
“See anyone interesting?” she asked, sitting again.
“I see some people who may have lied on their applications,” Stephen said critically, stopping at one profile and frowning down at it. “Besides, I believe the more important question is whether you’ve seen anyone interesting.”
“I didn’t get very far before Tony interrupted me,” she admitted. “He had a proposition.”
Stephen didn’t look surprised. “He mentioned he was planning to bring it up today. What did you think?”
“I’m not opposed to the idea,” Pepper said carefully. In truth, it was the best option she’d heard yet. “But I wanted to see what you thought. This isn’t just between me and Tony. I know Tony; he’ll want to be there 100%. And that effectively makes you a father too.”
“It does,” Stephen agreed, his blank expression giving nothing away.
“So… are you okay with that?” Pepper said. “Is that something you want? If it’s not, now is the time to say it.”
“I never imagined I would have a child,” Stephen told her. His hands shook as he lifted his cup. “Particularly after the accident. I lost all interest in sex after that, and a couple of the medications that I’m on would make it difficult for me to get someone pregnant.”
Pepper nodded, having already known this. Tony had told her in confidence after she professed worry over how the two of them would get on, what with Tony’s complete lack of interest in sex. Stephen wasn’t asexual, or at least he didn’t claim the label for himself, but based on what Tony said he was pretty adamant about never wanting to have sex. Luckily, that suited Tony perfectly fine.
“But that doesn’t mean I’m not intrigued by the idea. I like having Peter around. I like seeing the joy that Peter’s presence brings to both Tony and myself. I would very much enjoy raising a child. We’ve talked about adoption, but then when you started looking into donations, Tony suggested this could be a convenient solution for all of us.” Stephen hesitated briefly. “My one concern is that I’m not sure how much help I would be at first. My hands…” He trailed off, grimacing.
“It’s fine,” Pepper said gently. “Tony and I will be there. Hell, there are plenty of people in the tower to help. And trust me, there is still plenty you could do.”
“So you’re considering it?” he asked.
“Well… yes, I am. Some people might think it’s crazy… my mom sure will. But I really want a baby, and I like the idea of my child being a part of someone I know and love,” she said. “Even better if it’s Tony, because I know him so well. Plus, Tony brings you to the table as well. The idea of three parents instead of being a single mom sweetens the pot significantly.” She smiled to show that she was teasing, even though she was partially serious.
Stephen smiled too. “Give it some thought. You don’t need to decide right away.” He sat back, rubbing his neck. “JARVIS, where is Tony?”
“Sir is in the workshop.”
Pepper and Stephen exchanged exasperated looks, and then Stephen stood up. “I better go get him out of there, or he’ll pull another all-nighter.”
“Please do,” Pepper said, standing up herself. She picked up her tablet as Stephen left, and did a quick pass through all of the profiles. Some of them sounded impressive, but… she cast a thoughtful look at the door and hummed under her breath as she washed her cup out and set it in the dishwasher.
She did a lot of thinking over the next couple of days. She talked to Rhodey, who was very much in support of the idea, and she talked to her mother, who was very much not. And she also spent some time looking seriously at the files that the agency had given her, trying to decide who she might pick if she decided not to take Tony up on his offer. The problem was, Stephen’s skepticism had made her nervous. After all, she was trusting that complete strangers were who they said they were, and Pepper had been burned that way before in far less high-stakes situations.
There was always the option of asking JARVIS to run background checks, but honestly Pepper wasn’t sure she wanted JARVIS to bother wasting the processing power. Not when, the more she thought about it, the more she realized that she had never wanted to be a single mother. It was just the only avenue that she felt was open to her, and she wanted a baby badly enough to accept the cons.
But why do so when she didn’t have to?
It was late at night when Pepper crawled out of bed and padded, bare foot, to the elevator. JARVIS took her down to the common room floor, where she knew that some of the Avengers had been having a late night watching movies. As expected, everyone else was gone and Stephen and Tony were alone in the room, cuddled up on the couch: the two of them had a bad habit of falling asleep there and then regretting it the next day.
Pepper paused for a moment in the doorway, staring at the two of them with a smile. Stephen was laying on the couch itself on his back, bare feet stick out from beneath the blanket. Tony was laying half on top of him and half on the couch, mostly buried beneath the blanket. They made for an adorable sight, one that made her heart swell with happiness on Tony’s behalf.
This was all that Tony had ever wanted. This, right here. Or so she had thought. But maybe there was something else that Tony wanted too, which Pepper had never considered before. Being asexual and not wanting to have sex meant that there was a very obvious obstacle in the way of Tony having kids, but even more than that Tony had to be extremely careful about who he had a child with. Way too many people would take total advantage of him if it meant getting their greedy hands into the Stark fortune.
She didn’t need to take advantage; Tony would gladly hand her his entire fortune without blinking an eye. Hell, in a way he already had by making Pepper the CEO of Stark Industries. Technically, if she had been so inclined, Pepper could’ve overthrown Tony and forced him out of his own company. Thankfully for Tony, she had absolutely no intention of doing that. S.I. would die without Tony’s genius guiding the way, which was something that men like Obadiah Stane were too stupid to realize.
She padded over to the couch and sat down on Tony’s side. Stephen awoke first, blinking owlishly. “Something wrong?”
“No, not at all,” Pepper said. She patted Tony’s knee.
“Huh – wha?” Tony was slower to stir. “Pep?”
“I wanted to see if your offer was still open,” Pepper said.
Tony snapped to immediately. “Of course it is!”
“Good. Because I think I want to take you up on it,” she said.
“Seriously?” Tony said.
“Seriously.”
“Oh my god,” Stephen said. “You’re going to have a baby.”
Pepper wasn’t sure who he was talking to, but she shook her head. “No. We’re” she gestured between the three of them “are having a baby.”
The resulting brilliant smiles that lit up both Tony’s and Stephen’s face made her feel warm from head to toe, and she knew immediately that she’d made the right decision. She beamed as Tony and Stephen kissed with joy, and then Tony pushed himself up and threw his arms around her. Pepper hugged him back happily, returning Stephen’s smile over Tony’s shoulder.
They were really gonna do this, and she knew that three of them would do it right.
Author Asks
Decided to go ahead and answer these for anyone who might be interested.
1. Describe your comfort zone—a typical “you” fic.
Domestic fluff, modern or school AU, with a sprinkling of angst. I’m really trying to work outside of my comfort zone, but I don’t really like too many crazy AUs.
2. Is there a trope you’ve yet to try your hand at, but really want to?
I really want to do enemies-to-lovers, but it’s so hard to pull off convincingly and I’m afraid I’m going to mess it up.
3. Is there a trope you wouldn’t touch with a ten-foot pole?
MPREG…just…no. Also, most dub-con.
4. How many fic ideas are you nurturing right now? Care to share one of them?
I’m currently working on a rewrite of one of my first fics “The Insomnian Academy for the Elite.” It’s called “Stand by You” in the new version! That’s it right now other than brainstorming for the Promptis Big Bang and trying to finish WDES Verse 2.
5. Share one of your strengths.
In writing? I think I do fun and convincing dialogue.
6. Share one of your weaknesses.
I’d say I spend more time writing dialogue than descriptions. I also sometimes have issues with pacing.
7. Share a snippet from one of your favorite pieces of prose you’ve written and explain why you’re proud of it.
Chapter 10 of “Write Drunk, Email Sober.” I feel like I nailed everything about that chapter, from the emotion, to the dialogue...it’s my favorite thing I’ve written.
In that moment, something clicks into place for Prompto, like being shifted from the shallow to the deep end of a pool. He realizes there is much more to Ignis Scientia than just his ease on the eyes, and Prompto knows that he wants to dive even further into his depths.
Prompto’s smile comes naturally, full and delighted. Ignis mirrors it with his own.
“Boyfriend to Professor Scientia has a nice ring to it,” Prompto agrees. Ignis touches their noses, rubbing them together briefly before bestowing a kiss on the blond’s lips. They sink back into the bed and downwards, and Prompto is amazed to discover you can be lost and simultaneously found.
8. Share a snippet from one of your favorite dialogue scenes you’ve written and explain why you’re proud of it.
Most of “Rain or Shine and Everything In-Between,” because I felt like the dialogue was natural and fun, but also very true to life. My favorite scene is what I think is the most hard hitting of the entire fic:
“Tell me what’s the matter,” Ignis said as soon as the man had left the room, and Noctis made a show of studying the tips of his naga-skin boots, putting more weight on his good ankle. “Noctis?”
“I can’t do this, Ignis.”
“It’s only a tie, Noct—”
“No, this.” Noctis waved his hands at the whole room, and although it wouldn’t have been clear to anyone else, Ignis knew what he meant.
The prince’s advisor felt his heart skip a beat as he studied Noctis in the mirror, their eyes finally meeting as the prince’s chin jutted forward, stubborn, yet beautiful.
“What are you saying?” Ignis asked, pragmatic and cautious.
“I can’t do this, Iggy!” Noctis’s voice rose, skipping off the marble floors. “I won’t! I’m going to tell my father everything. I’m fucking gay for Bahamut’s sake, how I am supposed to make an heir, let alone have sex with my wife—”
“Shh,” Ignis implored, coming forward to squeeze Noctis’s shoulders in warning. “Shh,” he said a little more quietly, bringing his head to rest against Noctis’s cheek.
“I can’t—I can’t. Please, don’t make me do this!” Noctis’s heart was breaking, and Ignis’s was breaking along with it, and all this was so much more than choosing a stupid tie.
9. Which fic has been the hardest to write?
I’d say, “Daemons that Live in the Dark.” It was the heaviest content-wise. I had to take a lot of breaks to mentally and emotionally recharge between chapters, and the ending gave me the most trouble.
10. Which fic has bee the easiest to write?
“Write Drunk, Email Sober.” It was so fun to write, and I didn’t stop writing it from start to finish. It felt easy!
11. Is writing your passion or just a fun hobby?
I’d say a bit of both. I wanted to be a writer since I was in middle school, and even aspired to be an author at one point. I didn’t rediscover it until last year when surgery made me unable to be active and I needed something to do to manage my mental health.
12. What’s the best writing advice you’ve ever come across?
When you get stuck, don’t be afraid to skip ahead and write scenes out of order. For me, this is especially helpful because I get certain scenes in my head that I want to jot down, but sometimes have trouble leading up to them.
13. What’s the worst writing advice you’ve ever come across?
Not advice, exactly, but the idea that more kudos/hits/comments on a certain fic on AO3 = good/better. There have been popular fics that I have hated, and other ones with fewer kudos, etc. that I have absolutely loved. Everything is going to hit different from person to person, so you need to be true to you and what you like and not compare yourself to everyone else.
14. If you could choose one of your fics to be filmed, which would you choose?
“Write Drunk, Email Sober” for sure. It would be hilarious to watch.
15. If you only could write on pairing for the rest of your life, which pairing would it be?
Does OT4 count as a pairing? Because I vote that.
16. Do you write your story from start to finish, or do you write the scenes out of order?
Typically from start to finish unless I’m have a particular scene in mind that I need to get out, or if I’m having trouble writing a scene I might skip ahead and go back later.
17. Do you use any tools, like worksheets or outlines?
No…I probably should. I use prompts a lot though, and music for inspiration.
18. Stephen King once said that his muse is a man who lives in a basement. Do you have a muse?
Yes—my wife.
19. Describe your perfect writing conditions.
Rainy day in a coffee shop, big latte, and spotify playlist on in the background.
20. How many times do you usually revise your fic/chapter before posting.
I read through it once myself, let my wife read it and make edits, and then read it again. After posting I’ll read it a third time and usually still catch any errors I missed.
21. Choose a passage from one of your earlier fics and edit it into your current writing style.
I’m currently doing this with my fic, “Stand by You.”
22. If you were to revise one of your older fics from start to finish, which would it be and why?
“Stand by You” and “Dawn of the Godslinger,” mostly because I loved the concepts, but I feel like my writing has improved dramatically since I first wrote them and they’re in desperate need of updating.
23. Have you ever deleted on of your published fics?
Yes, a few of my earlier ones. The writing and characterization was cringey.
24. What do you look for in a beta?
My wife has an MFA and is an editor so I’m lucky to have her as my beta.
25. Do you beta yourself? If so, what kind of beta are you?
Yes! You have to edit your own work…I look for typos/grammar errors and characterization mostly.
26. How do you feel about collaborations?
With the right people they are a ton of fun! But if you have a bad partner they can be miserable. Overall, I really enjoy them.
27. Share three of your favorite fic writers and why you like them so much.
Crazyloststar – mostly because she and I have very similar writing styles and she has GREAT characterization and very fun ideas. Definitely look up to her!
Carolyncaves – because they wrote one of my favorite fanfics ever, “Something Just Like This,” which is a great example of an ace person in a relationship and makes me think of my wife.
HigharollaKockamamie – because they wrote one of my other favorite fanfics, “The Temptation of Saint Anthony, but with This Guy,” which is the only fic that has ever made me like Ardyn.
28. If you could write the sequel (or prequel) to any fic out there not written by yourself, which would you choose?
Oh man...probably something by @crazyloststar
29. Do you accept prompts?
Yes! I love them 😊
30. Do you take liberties with canon or are you very strict about your fic being canon compliant?
I like to keep character’s personalities as canon as possible, but other than that it’s fair game. My number one pet peeve when reading fanfic is when authors don’t get the characterization right.
31. How do you feel about smut?
I enjoy it if I’m in the mood to read it, but I’m not a huge fan of writing it. I’d rather focus on the emotions behind character relationships rather than the physical aspects.
32. How do you feel about crack?
I’m not a huge fan of crack fics, reading or writing them.
33. What are your thoughts on non-con and dub-con?
IF and only if it is woven into a story artfully, I can tolerate it. I do not like fics that focus specifically on non-con or dub-con as being sexy or attractive, and I refuse to write those kinds of fics. With that said, one of my fics does revolve around the idea that the antagonist rapes the main character, but it is not glorified in any way.
34. Would you ever kill off a canon character?
If it furthered the plot and I was going for angst, sure.
35. Which is your favorite site to post fic?
Ao3
36. Talk about your current wips.
Currently I’m working on “Stand by You,” my Promptis HS AU rewrite, and gearing up for the Promptis Big Bang. I also still have to finish WDES Verse 2.
37. Talk about a review that made your day.
Pretty much any of the comments on WDES…any comment, really.
38. Do you ever get rude reviews and how do you deal with them?
I’ve gotten a handful. I typically delete them and move on. Otherwise, I respond to all comments.
Outlander S4 - A Reflection
With that explosive finale behind us and a long Droughtlander ahead, I’m taking a moment to look back on this season and reflect on the good, the bad, and the ugly.
(I’ve had some time to unpack and process, so be warned: this is a LONG review, with mild spoilers for The Fiery Cross.)
The Good:
I understand that this was a divisive season for many fans, but I personally loved it! I could write a whole book about everything I loved, but for the sake of time, I’ll confine my praise to the best part of this season: the amazing cast of actors who bring my favorite characters to life.
Caitriona Balfe reprised her role as Claire Fraser with stunning success, and really sparkled when she shared the screen with her fellow cast members; her most powerful moments this season were definitely the mother/daughter conversations she had with Bree and Marsali. Though she handles tragic scenes with ease, I hope she is given a chance to enact lighter, happier sequences in Season 5; Jamie and Claire need more laughter and teasing, less heart-felt speeches and drama.
As our leading man, Sam Heughan played Jamie to perfection; he managed to tell entire stories with his eyes alone. Same as with Balfe, he captures tragedy easily, but I want him to stretch out a little and show off his acting chops. There will always be drama in Claire and Jamie’s lives, but please sprinkle in some more fluffy moments, so we can see Heughan laugh! Jamie’s roles as patriarch and leader are also going to be significantly expanded in the next season (the last few moments of the finale teased that a bit), and I can’t wait to see Heughan tackle that challenge.
I’ve been tentative about Sophie Skelton in the past; after all, Brianna is one of my favorite characters, despite her polarizing nature, and I was worried about her portrayal. But Skelton nailed everything (the rape scene and its aftermath, in particular, were deeply chilling), and I have complete confidence that Bree is in safe hands. In the finale, we saw Bree finally become a mother and reunite with her husband (not gonna lie, I’ve had that reunion on a loop ever since it aired); these two events are going to play major roles in her character growth (so excited for next season!).
Richard Rankin was a tour-de-force as Roger; I couldn’t tear my eyes away from the screen every time he appeared. Any issues I had with his character were purely a result of writing and production choices, and despite those issues, Rankin still managed to make the character wonderfully, emotionally, lovably human (for further evidence, please refer to the idiot hut). Roger’s journey is one of the most difficult transformations in the series, and next season will be challenging for Rankin; I’m particularly interested to see how he handles Roger’s growing relationship with Jamie.
All the leads were supported by a strong set of secondary characters, from Duncan Lacroix as the miraculously resurrected Murtagh to David Berry as the fabulous Lord John Grey. John Bell was one of my absolute favorites, with his spot-on portrayal of Young Ian (that proposal! the emotional goodbye!! running the gauntlet!!!). Ed Speelers played Stephen Bonnet in a way that brought back shivery memories of Black Jack. Honestly, there was no weak link in this cast. Special shoutout to Braeden Clarke (Kaheroton) and Tantoo Cardinal (Adawehi/Nayawenne in the books); hopefully we’ll be able to see even more powerful and complex First Nations characters in the coming season (to this effect, may I humbly suggest showing Young Ian’s time among the Mohawk? Would love to see that first-hand rather than having the character describe it after the fact; also, you can never have too much John Bell).
This Season’s MVPs: Lauren Lyle and César Domboy. Marsali and Fergus are never more than side characters in the books; you never hear the story from their POV. Thankfully, the show saw a chance to expand their roles and took it. And oh boy, did Domboy and Lyle deliver! Their nuanced performances just blew me away (”If Not For Hope” comes to mind). I hope that we see even more of them going forward.
The Bad:
No adaptation is perfect (although if you have found one that is, please message me immediately). It is especially difficult when the adaptation in question has to fit an 880-page book into a mere 13 hours; to put it into perspective, the audiobook version of Drums of Autumn is a whopping 45 hours long! Though I like to nitpick and criticize, I am not so arrogant as to think that I could have done a better job, and I am very grateful to the writing and production teams who tackle this impossible task. I am also strangely content with most of the deviations they’ve made from the source material (Murtagh as a regulator is particularly genius, with really interesting implications for next season).
That being said, there is some room for improvement. And one area that definitely needs some fine tuning is Claire and Jamie. This year, some very vocal fans found issue with the fact that we didn’t see our main lovebirds enough, and there weren’t enough sex scenes, and why weren’t they in this episode?! For me, none of those things were an issue, especially given that we saw Jamie and Claire way more than any other characters this season. I don’t think we need more J/C time; I think we need better J/C time.
I wish the show would stop beating us over the head with Jamie and Claire’s epic love; we know their love is deep and everlasting, that’s why we keep coming back! (That, and the kilts.) But we need to move on from soap-operatic speeches and tender love-making; those were more interesting in the early days of their marriage, when their love was a new, fragile thing. Show me instead the easy comfort of a long-married couple: the teasing, the laughter, the bone-deep happiness. Balfe and Heughan have such great chemistry when it comes to that kind of thing, but we’ve only gotten snippets of it this season! Rather than another over-the-top, tear-jerking scene where Jamie and Claire reassure each other and reaffirm their love (again), give me Claire cuddling up to Jamie under a snowbank after his back gives out and telling him stories. Or exchanging amused looks with him when Young Ian does/says something silly. Or Jamie teasing Claire about that time she hit him in the head with a fish while he was trying to fight off a bear (true story). Or Claire teasing Jamie with her new breeches (I’m not going to say no to sex scenes entirely). Get rid of the excessive drama (this couple already has more drama than they know what to do with); bring on the fluff!
Speaking of moving on, the show needs to let Frank Randall go. By this point in the series, he’s been dead for a few years, and quite frankly, good riddance (pardon the pun). His character was cast in a sympathetic light for narrative purposes; the producers wanted to make him the antithesis of his ancestor, Black Jack Randall, so they carefully omitted the fact that he was at times a racist ass with a string of mistresses (my apologies to any Frank fans; as you can see, he’s not one of my favorite characters). The problem is that they took it too far, painting Frank as a martyr and putting first Claire, then Jamie, at a big disadvantage. Despite this mistake, I’m fine with using Frank to flesh out Brianna’s character (his only redeeming quality is his aptitude for fatherhood), but that should have happened very early on in the season, before Bree makes the journey through the stones. That journey is a pivotal point for Bree; she is driven not only by a need to save her mother, but also by a deep curiosity and longing for this birth father that she’s never met. In the book, she even goes so far as to abandon the name “Randall” and adopt “Fraser” for the journey. But that sentiment was lost entirely by the decision to have Frank accompany her on the voyage, narratively speaking. We no longer get the feeling that she’s eager to meet/bond with Jamie; even worse, the writers had her casually dropping Frank’s name into every conversation! No matter how great Tobias Menzies is, we have neither the time nor the will to keep devoting so much energy to a deceased character (who isn’t that critical to the future story, btw). Heading into Season 5, we need to make our final, belated goodbyes to Frank Randall.
One 20th century man we should have seen more of instead was Roger Mackenzie. As we dove into Season 4, I was so excited to see his developing relationship with Brianna; remember when they were super cute together, a million years ago in Season 3? But too much focus on exposition meant that we didn’t see them until three episodes in, and instead of the slow burn I had anticipated, we got a lot of unnecessary drama. Why on Earth is Roger a misogynist all of a sudden? What happened to the sweet proposal where they both decide they’re not yet ready for marriage? The lack of screen time meant that Bree and Roger’s entire relationship development was crammed into one episode; coupled with poor writing choices, the result was a shaky romance that was hard to root for. I was lucky enough to have the books as a safety net; I know exactly how deeply they love and respect each other, despite the mayhem onscreen. But the fans who hadn’t read the series (and even some who had) didn’t understand why these two were an endgame couple, and I don’t blame them. That last reunion scene helped cement their relationship a little, but not enough; unfortunately, Season 5 is going to have to waste some of its precious time rectifying this misstep.
Which brings me to my last point: the pacing. With so many new characters and so little time, it is more important than ever that the show learn to juggle all the storylines more smoothly. The pacing of this season was so uneven, it gave me whiplash. Gone are the days when Claire and Jamie were the only focus; from now on, their ever-growing family is going to continue complicating matters. Outlander needs to evolve to meet this need if it wants to keep up. (Also, could we revert back to a 16-episode format, like in Season 1? Please and thank you.)
The Ugly:
I will readily admit that I am new to this fandom. I got hooked on the show during summer 2018 and devoured the books shortly thereafter. When I joined Tumblr in the fall, it was because I wanted to celebrate this story with likeminded people and geek out over the upcoming season.
The actual experience was a bit more jarring (suffice it to say, I didn’t know hate-watching was a real thing that people did). I don’t want to chastise or implore certain fans to adopt a more positive outlook; I’ve seen a lot of posts about that already, and I’m not inclined to add to them. Instead, I’d like to share some of the guidelines I impose on myself when I contribute to any fandom (I’m not saying these will or should work for everyone, but they have worked for me):
Love, not hate. To me, a fandom is a community that comes together out of love. Knowing this, I try my best not to express any feelings of hate within that community; I don’t think it’s an appropriate place to share those feelings, and I don’t want to diminish the fandom experience for anyone else. If I find that I no longer love or even like the show/book/movie that the fandom is centered on, I disengage from the community entirely, because I no longer consider myself a fan. And that’s perfectly fine; there is no rule that says that once you’re in a fandom, you’re in it for life.
If you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all. Despite the fact that I love the subject matter, it is not an absolute, unconditional sort of love. I often find myself disliking certain aspects or getting frustrated by opposing views (this is doubly true when it comes to adaptations). I let myself express these dislikes and frustrations only if I can see the silver lining; in other words, I allow myself to say a few negative things about a character/scene only if I can supplement them with a good dose of positivity as well. Too much uninterrupted negativity borders on hate.
R-E-S-P-E-C-T. I’m a very anxious person with self-confidence issues, so I have a hard time expressing my opinion online, even anonymously. That’s why I’m never going to tear anyone else down for doing so. I may disagree with you, or dislike the way you expressed yourself, but I’m going to be respectful even if it kills me, because that’s how I would want other people to interact with me. Even with the Internet as a buffer, I think it’s important to remember that we are all human, and all equally capable of hurting others and being hurt ourselves.
Again, these guidelines work for me, but it’s completely subjective. And even though my experience in the OL fandom hasn’t been a bed of roses so far, I’ve still met some amazing people with incredible things to say. My favorite fandom moments of the season? @futurelounging‘s beautiful thoughts on episode 12 and @breefraser‘s hilarious criticism of Roger’s sartorial choices.
I’d love to hear from other fans! What worked for you this season? What would you have changed? Favorite fandom moments? If you choose to reply, please be kind and respectful.
BDRP QUESTIONNAIRE
Your Name: Lena
Characters: Anthony Coleman, Arthur Pendragon, Ashley Armbruster, Celia Gorgon, Fflewddur Fflam, Finn Flounder, Kanga DeRosa, Llewellyn “Louie” Mallard, Sora Hamasaki/Roxas
Pick one of your characters and talk about their growth: Oh man I think of my characters I’m the most proud of Celia’s growth? I mean a lot’s changed since I got her, and I’ve been able to see the progression and build up that change from her being and nervous and terrified about everything to starting to come into her own and be a confident woman. I’m proud of having taken that journey with her, and I like that she’s no longer the mousy shy character that I thought she would always be in the beginning. There’s a lot more strength and determination to her than I honestly expected. She’s been through a lot, she fell in love and everything and I think the amazing part is that she’s not regressing now that she’s heartbroken. She knows a little more about what she can handle. I find that super exciting for her. I’m really really pleased with how far we’ve come since I rejoined with her.
Pick another character and talk a little about where you WANT them to go. What are your plans for them going into the new year? So I honestly have a lot of plans for a lot of my babes that I don’t want to reveal but I can say in the vaguer sense where I want them to go. Anthony - honestly just want him to terrorize and go hard. Unleash his full villain in this next year. Help him do that friends. Arthur - I know I want him to do something heroic and noble, but on a smaller scale, I want him to form a proper attachment, maybe have feelings for someone. I think he’s so work focused it’d be interesting how that might affect him as a character. Ashley - I have a lot of change in mind for her. I want to see her move past the struggles she has with her family/find her own way. Celia - just see her continue to gain confidence and figure out what makes her happy. Fflewddur - I honestly want to see him really struggle. He’s always had everything handed to him. I’d love for things to go horribly horribly wrong for him. Finn - Honestly my plan is to go into who he is as a merman and more of the magical side to his life. I love the teen stuff but I am very very eager to do mer stuff with him. Kanga - It’s a secret. But it’ll be fun. Louie - As always I want him to get into a lot of trouble. lol. I also want to see a rift with family with him and see how he handles that. He has a tendency for the dramatic and I think that’d be fun. Roxas - see them figure out what’s going on/learn about Sora Sora - see him learn about Roxas. it’ll be fun.
Pick a thread or a plot that you’re proud of and talk about why you loved it. Honestly it’s still ongoing but I’m really proud of what I’ve developed with Arthur. The ongoing quest for the sword and everything around that. It’s the first time I’ve had a longer term plan with a character and known what I wanted to do with it and it’s so cool! It’s exciting to do, and I really really loved the thread lauryl and I had in the lake and writing the Lady of the Lake briefly. It was just COOL.
In terms of your own writing, identify 1-3 strengths and talk about why you think it’s one of your strengths. oh I’m so bad at this. ahaha. I’m gonna do my best but it’s hard for me to talk about myself and stuff like this. Let’s see...I think 1) Dialogue. I think I’m pretty good at making my character’s voices distinct and their own. It’s been especially fun with Finn because of his stutter and the way that he speaks. 2) Teen hijinks. I know this is an odd thing to put as a strength, but honestly I do think I somehow have my niche with teenagers. Maybe their drama just suits my dramatic cancer self who knows. I feel like all three of my teens are unique and quirky and idk is this valid? I find it far too easy to think of ridiculous teen plots. 3) Getting into character’s heads. Thoughts and stuff, I feel like I am good at sharing where my characters are at and how they feel and all that. I feel like I do a good job of diving right into emotions.
In terms of your own writing, identify 1-3 areas of improvement. 1) showing not telling more. You know trying to really give more detail to what’s happening around characters and their actions rather than a ton of their thoughts. I know I need to work on this more, sometimes I just get lazy and go with what’s easier and habit. 2) There’s another thing I want to work on and again get lazy, where with dialogue you don’t respond to every thing a person says cause that’s not natural to a conversation. You want to respond to like the last thing and then maybe something else after. I think about it but I forget about it and I could work on it. 3) Description. I want to do better at describing things and giving a better visual image of things happening and stuff. I feel like that’s something I’d really like to do better with in the new year.
Pick one of your plots, or even just a character, and come up with a list of 3-5 “mentor texts” where you can look for inspiration or research, then write a short (2-4 sentences) why you picked those texts So I noticed I used tv and film as inspo more than books and stuff but it’s still a reference material to go back to and I’m not sorry. Finn: -It by Stephen King. So this is largely chosen because the character of Bill Denbrough in It has a stutter, and it was one of the first real examples I could think of where I could listen to it and the sound via the movie and how that would work with Finn’s stutter. I go back to it every once in a while for reference. And I’d love to read the book one day and see if there’s more to uncover. -Ferris Bueller’s Day Off: Study of Cameron Frye. So this is a high school movie which also helps with the right vibe, but the most important thing to me is the whole vibe and fear of going out to do ANYTHING. Finn has a really hard time with that and Cameron Frye is honestly pretty good inspo on this sort of thing. Also he’s got two more outgoing friends in a sense, which Finn also has in the form of Ariel and Nemo. -Star Trek: Study of the character Bones. I think this is sort of a good reference as to where I’d love to see Finn in the future and it’s a cool thing to try to work toward. Bones has channeled his innate worrying into helping people, and I think that’s something that Finn could learn to do. How and in what way? I don’t know. But it’s a good reference point for the future maybe. -The Rugrats: Study of Chuckie. Yes is it a bit funny to find inspo from another animated character for Finn? Sure a bit. But honestly the more I think about it, Chuckie Finster is a very anxious child and that is basically Finn on the regular. And again a character that has a much more confident best friend and gets dragged along on the adventures. And even though Chuckie the character is an actual baby and Finn’s a teen there’s a lot to really look at and be inspired by. When I was little I didn’t think Chuckie was that relatable but when I got a little older I was like ‘oh man that’s a mood’ and honestly he’s anxious, I’m anxious, and I’m writing about an anxious character so it all kind of works.
And now, a wishlist! I looooove wishlists and this’ll probably be the longest part of this whole thing so that if anyone wants to brainstorm stuff/looks at this list and goes ‘hey me too’ we can start scheming. -fake dating! -alexa play fake love- it’s a trope for a reason and I really really love it. Someone get in on it with me. -rags to riches (I want Louie to experience being rich for like a day or something. I think that’d make a really interesting story for him.) -murder. well. If anyone wants to get rid of a character one day hmu. -more magic based plots. I have magicks but somehow they HARDLY use it and that’s lame. I want more magic. I want to def explore mer stuff with Finn more especially, and generally just chaotic magic things. -i want Sora/Roxas to fuck with people. Like I want someone to date one of them just for an awkward scene in bed or something. That’s a very small plot thing but I think it’d be hilarious. -I really like romantic plots and I like the soft puff/seemingly cold slytherin relationship. idk I guess I want a duo like that. Or more romance in general. Date my characters. Long term, short term, to make someone else jealous? let’s go. -DISASTER AGENTS. I had a vague idea and I want it but who knows if/when that happens but two brothers with a rescue agency but they are completely incompetent. I like the witty characters sue me. Anthony: -i already said this but murder. -i also want him to hook up with/become friends with a sorcerer. i. have.an.idea. =D -continue to have him sink his teeth in the board and try to influence the town Arthur: -a slow burn love story would suit him nicely. i have plans for him and i think it would up the stakes. -a buddy cop story. idk Arthur is a workaholic so I feel like the best way to be buddies with him is to work with him. lol. this loser. Ashley: -i have her future planned mostly. she’s good i think. Celia: -turn a boyfriend to stone. seriously! -a hero moment for her? idk i think it’d be cool to have what she thinks of as a curse save someone’s life. Fflewddur: -someone let him spill your secrets with his harp. let him cause DRAMA. -connect him to other musicians. He’s got an ego and he’s kind of the worst, but I want him to talk more music and do more music things. Finn: -MER THINGS!!! -i want to explore some of his trauma from the bullying and everything. I know I’m gonna do a one shot, but I also would love to have him be able to open up to a friend about how things were/have been. I don’t think he’d even have told Ariel all of it. -touch. touch is his love language and I think that he’s probably fairly touch starved as he keeps to himself a lot and is afraid of like everything lol. So I’d love to explore his relationship with touch and see him learn to trust people and open up and more free with his affection and holding hands and hugs and that sort of thing. -first love/kiss. with him i think it would be a very slow thing but also it would be SO CUTE and yeah. he’s more of a romantic than my other teens so gotta ask for it here. lmao. Kanga: -board things. She’s on it now woo! I’m here to explore that more -it’s a secret. It’s coming soon to theaters. Louie: -again. Rich for a day, see how the other 1% lives that sort of thing. -family plot line. I want it to happen so bad. I want to see Louie sort of self destruct. Someone help him get there. -further down the trouble path. Drugs? Or fighting or something considerably more reckless? He’s still a fairly good kid, I’d love to explore something a little darker with him. -also to explore him being gay and let him really come into his own there. He’s too busy being Louie to notice so that’s a thing I really want to push with him and see him figure out feelings more. Roxas: -have them figure out about Sora first. Let him and friends struggle with how to handle that. so really mission a) make Roxas a few friends. then b) share the chaos of their life with said friends. it’ll be fun. -get in a fight with battle magic. I think it’d be interesting to see it in play, especially since they are not fully in control. A magic fight guys. Who’s in?Sora: -oo you know what might be fun? having him become good buds with someone and move in somewhere with them and then and have him and Roxas’ stuff make a mess of things. roommate drama HEIGHTENED. -Someone telling Sora about Roxas. Because he is not the smart one of the duo. He’s pretty damn oblivious -break someone’s heart. I feel like he’d be the type to do it without realizing and that’d be an interesting thing to go into.
OPTIONAL: Why do you RP? Well honestly I’ve been rping for so long it’s hard to remember a time before I did it. It’s a good escape from reality sometimes and I really love to write. Writing makes me feel good and unwind and I like that I can express things through characters that I might not be able to do myself places because I’m too awkward. It’s nice to be able to let things out and enthuse online and to get to know a great community. I’ve made some great friends through rp and I love that a lot about the whole thing. Plus it’s through rp that a lot of the time you can let out over enthusiasm. Or at least for me that’s the case. As many of you already know I tend to obsess over things and when I do it’s like I need so many outlets to get by. Right now BTS and then having Finn as my outlet for example. But before that it would be like my years long Steve Rogers fixation and how I’d be off and on in group rps with him as a character or on an indie blog and that would be how I expressed my love for this character and let some of that out. It’s so helpful and therapeutic almost, since I feel like I get too enthusiastic for people around me to relate a lot.
Avengers: Endgame
(Joe & Anthony Russo, 2019)
This movie has a chink in its armour. If you have not been keeping up to speed with the Marvel Cinematic Universe over the past decade and change then the immense payoffs that Endgame delivers will probably mean nothing to you. The good news is that if you have then this might be as satisfying a cinematic experience as you’ll sit through any time soon.
Probably the greatest thing about the film is that even though narratively it is the second half of a story begun a year ago in Infinity War, unlike many big screen adaptations of epic final novels there is still plenty of genuine character saved for this concluding chapter of the saga.
Endgame is not just a big battle, it is a movie that in its immense 3 hour running time manages to craft and execute a number of massively satisfying arcs for its characters (Downey Jr’s Tony Stark in particular, but Evans and Hemsworth’s Thor and Cap, Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye, even Karen Gillan’s Nebula) that enable it to exist as more than a big blow off. If Infinity War was Thanos’ movie, the story of a mad tyrant’s epic quest, that was because our heroes journeys were being saved for this effort in their entirety, therefore even if Infinity War and Endgame are certainly narratively two halves of a whole, they each have their own self contained stories that ensure they stand triumphantly alone.
Beyond that are the plethora of little details and angles of the movie - the way it handles the endlessly explored cinematic topic of time travel, dealing with it in a way that could be termed realistic, seeking to redefine myths of time previously immortalized on screen. It’s not easy to make such an oft used trope seem fresh or interesting, but in taking the time travel realism angle that they do it keeps the whole thing from feeling too stale. It’s not just time travel, it’s attempting to handle the science behind it in a crowd pleasing blockbuster. The mileage they get out of little lines so easy to take for granted is very much to the writers credit too, like pondering the idea that what happened at Infinity War’s conclusion did indeed have its benefits, or recalls to moments from movies past - the opening of The Winter Soldier will never be the same again.
There’s the way that the movie utilizes its running time to give a fair shake to what has come before. It's sadly easy for sequels to movies that end in moments of immense trauma for major characters to feel like total letdowns when it comes to dealing in the fallout and impact of said experiences. This movies luxurious running time might feel ridiculously excessive to many, but aside from the fact that it'd have been tough to wrap up a decade plus saga that runs over 20 movies in anything less, its length allows it to revel in that kind of stuff.
Indeed, Endgame gets off to something of a slow start (Following a brilliantly haunting opening sequence on Hawkeye’s farm that makes that character matter more in a couple of minutes than all his previous appearances have managed put together) boldly taking its time dealing in very low key actorly lead scenes focused on how everyone is coping with Thanos' actions. It’s a bold filmmaking step to begin such a hotly anticipated and hyped movie in so slow and sombre a fashion, but it’s a tremendous storytelling one for the overall arc, because anything less would have been a major disservice to Infinity War. The MCU is thankfully not in the business of attempting to bury or outshine each previous effort with each new one, which is part of what makes it so special.
Once it picks up (thanks at least in part to Paul Rudd, amazing) it does so with tremendous gusto, and we get the similar sort of ensemble, crossover hijinks that made Infinity War such fun. The cast in this midsection of the movie are so wonderful together that they paper over any issues a person might be tempted to take with the whole time travel conceit. The big blow out of a final act is perhaps less satisfying (and particularly coherent) overall, but it has moments peppered throughout it that will stand with the best stuff this cinematic saga has ever produced, and the resolutions that follow feel as satisfying and beautifully handled as could be expected.
Behind the camera the Russo’s deserve a lot of credit. Not only do they continue to perfect the by now famous but no less divisive Marvel movie trick of balancing humour in brilliantly with the darker stuff, the actors are so good, and the moments so well written that the seriousness is never genuinely undercut, but the levity helps keep things palatable when the characters situations are often anything but, but their ability to make character matter so much in the midst of all of what is happening is so strong. The movie has a massive cast, with a whole host of luminaries often in blink and you’ll miss them roles, but the film gives pretty much everyone that moment to shine, to make the human moments matter. A mother and son reunion, a father and son reunion, a character reminding another to reverse what was done without undoing what has happened, as has always been the case with the MCU at its best, it is the actors that shine first and foremost.
For sure this saga has had its ups and downs over the years, but this movies ability to tie almost everything together with a bow to the degree that it almost improves movies like The Winter Soldier and The Dark World by reaching back into the past and bestowing upon them its knowing magical touch, and that gift of hindsight is maybe what makes it most special. It is indeed a massive work of fan service but rather than just settling for being an audience pandering slab of nostalgia, Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely’s screenplay weaves story and theme and character into those trips down memory lane to make the whole thing matter that much more.
The movies use of twists is impeccable in the same way as well. From nearly the very start they come again and again, but they don’t feel like moments that exist simply to avert expectations and throw a wrench in the works of people who will have spent 12 months predicting what was to come. Each one is executed in a way, and with a care that makes them matter as moments, gives them a weight, and allows them to contribute to the larger portrait being painted.
Very little seems to have been disclosed for what lies ahead for the MCU, but the gauntlet has for sure been thrown down with this one. The fact that others have tried and seemingly so far spectacularly failed to replicate the formula that these people have nailed since 2008 is testament to just how special a thing it is, and while this is a grand conclusion to this first act, the pieces are already well in place for them to go forward just as strong. Here’s to the Infinity Saga, to remembering what was, and also being able to accept what can be.
Incredible Running Technique Breakthroughs: Are They Legit?
What's behind every one of these radical stride overhaul success stories?
Trevor Jackson is a serious age-group runner-- not precisely world class, but faster than many people. He ran track in senior high school, avoided running in university, and took it up again in his mid-20s. After a couple of months of training he established a 10K Public Relations of 36:03. He boasted of, but not pleased with, the achievement, totally anticipating to enhance his time as he gathered miles in his legs. Fifteen months and 7 10Ks later, nonetheless, he had just reduced his best mark by 19 secs.
A annoyed look for answers led Trevor to attempt changing his stride. Specifically, he traded in his heel strike for the forefoot landing that numerous credible experts advised. To state that it worked would certainly make me guilty of a significant understatement. Trevor experienced an amazing breakthrough, lowering his 10K PR to 32:44 in his following race and also ultimately getting it all the way down to 30:51. The top local runners in his location, useded to beating Trevor smoothly, couldn't aid however suspect the pharmaceutical representative of doping.
The tale of Trevor Jackson is untrue. As well as not just is it incorrect, yet it's entirely farfetched. The idea that a jogger could improve as substantially as Trevor did is not farfetched. Joggers experience amazing performance innovations regularly. Just what's farfetched is the suggestion that a knowingly made adjustment in running technique could precipitate such an innovation.
Runners are motivated to change their strides for 2 reasons: to reduce injury risk and to improve efficiency. There exists some rather reliable clinical proof and an abundance of trustworthy anecdotal proof (specifically from the physical treatment world) that suitable stride adjustments could reduce the risk for reappearance of specific sorts of injuries. However, there is no legit proof that purposely made technique tweaks could meaningfully improve running performance.
In truth, there is no clinical evidence whatsoever. As for unscientific proof, offered the current mania for running method schooling-- much of which has a cultish quality-- you 'd have no difficulty locating joggers who will certainly promise that some unique method entirely changed their running for the far better, but these reviews are about as legitimate as your average diet pill success tale.
Stephen McGregor, PhD, a workout scientist at Eastern Michigan University who also trainers joggers and also triathletes, has actually heard his share of these testimonies. A number of years ago he coached a triathlete who was an above-average runner-- roughly a 40-minute 10K guy. This fellow chose to look for improvement by taking on the preferred POSE method of running. When he appeared the opposite side, he raved to McGregor concerning how much the stride improvement had improved his running. McGregor himself could not assist but discover that the professional athlete's performances in test workouts showed no improvement whatsoever. The athlete also competed in the exact same race two years in a row, as soon as prior to the stride change and once again subsequently. His times were nearly identical. Yet these realities did not wet the professional athlete's conviction that POSE had actually made him a far better jogger.
"Some individuals resemble that," McGregor states. "When they buy a product, they enjoy it-- not always due to the fact that the item is good, however due to the fact that they got it."
More just recently McGregor coached a very respectable jogger with the ability of finishing his 10Ks in 32 minutes and modification. While purchasing at his regional running boutique, this man dropped under the impact of a "stride specialist" that examined his stride and also advised some modifications. The jogger considered the expert reliable and went all-in on making the adjustments. He was exceptionally passionate regarding the results and raved regarding his enhanced running to his coach.
Now, it so happens that Stephen McGregor's primary study focus is running stride analysis. He examines joggers in his lab continuously. And it so happened that McGregor had examined this certain runner before he altered his stride, and also he checked him again subsequently. McGregor found that the jogger was less cost-effective with his "brand-new as well as enhanced" stride compared to he had actually been with his old stride. Yet, regardless of clear evidence that tinkering with his stride had made him a worse jogger, this fellow continuouslied hold on to the belief that his brand-new stride was a lot better.
McGregor's research on the running stride has shown him that there is no solitary appropriate means to run. Instead, each jogger's optimum stride is as special as his body. As a result, each jogger has to discover his optimal stride on his very own. "Running performance doesn't fit any one version of the perfect running stride," he states. "I can't predict how affordable a runner is merely by viewing him run. For that factor, I recognize it would not be an excellent suggestion to attempt to make a runner a lot more affordable by making his stride look a particular method."
This is various from suggesting that every jogger already runs with the very best stride they could perhaps achieve. On the contrary, McGregor's research searchings for recommend that renovations in running kind go to the very least as vital as gains in aerobic ability in connection to a runner's long-term performance advancement. Yet these enhancements can not come simultaneously through knowingly forced method adjustments. Instead, they must be earned over time through a subconscious advancement that is stimulated by merely running hard, usually.
"I would not presume as to state that no conscious stride modification can ever before result in better efficiency," McGregor claims, "however also in the ideal instance, the enhancement would be marginal, and also it's much a lot more most likely to cause an adverse impact on economic climate."
Another professional athlete customer of McGregor's enhanced his 10K time by 2 mins under McGregor's support. He did so without trying any type of visible adjusting his stride or doing any kind of drills or strategy job of any type of kind. McGregor just pushed him with challenging training. And also, McGregor notes, "This was an individual who recognized exactly how to press himself."
Witch Way Is Right? Part 11
A/N: Ok, so not really much to say here except there’s a time skip. The main point is to skip Y/N’s training session cause we really don’t need to know all of that. So, yeah, here’s Part 11!
Subject: Avengers x Male!Reader/Steve Rogers x Male!Reader
Characters: Y/N, Alex, Doctor Strange, Wong, Mom and Dad OC
Tags: @uselessace @avengersohyeah @ech0winchester @thegreatficmaster @writeyouin
Word Count: 1.4k
________________________________________________________
2 1/2 Months Later:
Reader’s POV:
Well, Doc wasn’t lying when he said how intense this training would be. In fact, saying it was intense is an understatement. It was hellish. After a month of intense sparring and tests, Stephen sends me off with Thor and Loki to find their father. Yeah, thats right, THE Thor Odinson and Loki Laufeyson. Apparently, they have a sister and she had the same ambitions Loki does, or I should say did. He’s seems like a good guy now as far as I can tell. But I’ll get back to that crazy story later.
Now, after a month of training, I think I can say I’m ready to go up against Alex. I’ve shed blood, sweat and, of course, tears during his training, but it was all worth it. Compared to before, I feel completely stronger! “This is amazing, Stephen!” I admit to him ecstatically. “I feel completely in control of my magic. Not only that but I feel like I’m ready to fight my brother.”
“First of all, it shouldn’t be hard to refer to me as Doctor Strange otherwise you’re not as ready as I thought.” He replies in annoyance. “Second, I can tell just by looking at you, you’ve improved in your magic and spellcasting. You’re a quick learner for someone whose only been learning for a couple of months now. Sorta remind me of myself in that aspect.”
“I was gonna thank you, until you said that last part.” I reply jokingly. “Now, I just feel insulted.”
Having to deal with my quips and sarcasm must’ve finally gotten to him because instead of rolling his eyes or even scoffing at me like normal, he chuckles, which I never hear come from him and it catches me by surprise. That small reaction really makes me miss my family and friends. To hear them laugh. To see them smile. I can’t wait to finally go home. Its been two in a half months and I miss them all so much. Don’t get me wrong, staying with Stephen was... educational to put it lightly. I mean, who doesn’t like reading nothing but spell books of words you can’t even pronounce for one whole week? Not this guy. But the whole time, I couldn’t stop thinking about my kiss with Steve.
Flashback:
Did he like it? Was the kiss too hard? Was it too soft? Did I use too much tongue? Did I use tongue at all? These questions keep racking through my brain and it’s making it hard for me to concentrate. I need to stop focusing on it. Besides, I felt him kiss back. Wait, did he kiss back?
“Something on your mind, kid?” Stephen asks. It must be obvious that I haven’t been with him, mentally since I got here.
“Nothing, I’m just...”
“Oh, you don’t have to lie. I can tell when someone’s thinking about their first kiss. I’m guessing you wanna know what he thinks about it, right?” He replies and I just nod. Suddenly, Stephen opens a portal on the ground and gestures for me to come to him. I do so and look down to get an above view of Steve talking to Bucky.
“I just don’t know, Buck. I had only been talking to the kid for three days and I feel like that doesn’t even matter.” Steve admits. “Whenever I look at him, I just feel like protecting him from everything bad and when I knew I couldn’t protect him from whatever he’s facing during his training, I thought maybe I can send something with him.”
“And that something was a 10 second kiss?” Bucky chuckles, finding it amusing the way Steve is acting.
“Wait, was that too long?” Steve said, worryingly.
“Listen, Punk, I’ve heard the kid from his own mouth say that he likes you.” Bucky says. “He really does, so you shouldn’t be worrying about if he liked it or if it was too long, which it wasn’t. Instead, think about what you’re gonna do when he gets back.” Steve nodded and thanked him before walking off.
Stephen closed the portal and looked at me. “See? He’s just as worried about it as you are. Like his friend said, you shouldn’t be worried about if he liked it or if it was too long, which it was.” He said with a grossed face. “Instead, think about what you’re gonna do when you get back.”
I thought about it and nodded. He’s right. I shouldn’t be scared and think he didn’t enjoy it, which he did. Instead I should be excited to hurry up and get through this training so I have more time to spend with him before The War begins. I thank him and walk back to my mountain of books, ready to get through this long ass training seesion.
-End Flashback
“Well, The War doesn’t begin for another week, and I’ve taught you everything a born, light witch or sorcerer could know. So, I think we’re done here” He says while reaching for his sling ring. “Do you want me to open a portal or do you wanna do it yourself?”
Oh yeah thats another thing Stephen taught me. I can now teleport, instead of using a portal like sorcerers have to use. I guess thats the benefit of being a witch rather than a sorcerer. “Thanks for the offer, but I gotta test this shit out for myself, right?” I ask, getting a nod from Stephen in response. I tell him goodbye and thank him for the awesome training.
“You’re welcome, kid. And don’t worry, I’ll be helping you in The War, too.” He reminds me. I tank him again and get to using my powers.
My hands glow a more pure gold than it did before. I think about my home. My parents, the smell of my house. I clap my hands together and a gold light flashes around me, instantly taking me to my destination.
I search around the house for my parents but don’t see them anywhere. I call out their names but still no sign of them. Where could they’ve gone? I get an idea that Strange used to teleport Thor, Loki and I to his father’s location.
I go upstair to my parents’ bathroom and find my mom’s hair brush with some of her hair on it. Perfect. I grab a strand of it and start messing with it like how he did. I can feel that its ready so I throw it at the wall and a portal opens up showing my parents and their sitting and talking with... No... No, it can’t be! Why are they with HIM?! The three of them notice the portal I made and stand up staring at me in shock.
“What the hell in going on here?” I ask them.
“Champ, you’re done with your training already?” My dad replies. “You look stronger. More powerful, too.”
“Don’t change the subject!” I retort. “Why are you guys doing this? And with him?”
“We didn’t think you’d be back so soon, we thought we had time to talk to about past times.” My mom says. “We all missed you so much so you’re father thought it’d be a great idea to invite him over for dinner.”
“This can’t be happening right now.” I say in disbelief. I never thought my parents would embarass me like this.
1. Do you listen to music when you write?
Only when I’m typing up what I’ve written, honestly!
I can’t otherwise focus on the actual writing/editing if there’s music or other distracting noises so-
2. Are you a pantser or plotter?
Plotter all the way!
I gotta have an outline, otherwise my story loses focus and that’s NOT GOOD!
3. Computer or pen and paper?
Both, technically XD I use pen and paper for the drafting, and to get all my ideas down (and outline too of course), but then I typically use the computer for typing up what I’ve written :))
5. How much writing do you get done on an average day?
Less than I’d like to recently :/ I honestly NEED to get a better writing/editing schedule, but my days are just so consumed by other things to take away my attention, and it sucks. Both as an excuse and just a way of getting by when I have a manuscript that needs rewrites! D:
6. Single or multiple POV?
Single POV (at least for now? I’m really hoping to branch out with future WIPs)
7. Standalone or series?
Depends on the story idea, really!
If there’s enough content to expand upon after book 1, I typically will plan for sequels. I mean.. The Hunters Saga started out as just a standalone with a thought-about sequel, which turned into a trilogy, which is NOW a freaking QUADRILOGY!
So yeah, it kinda depends XD
8. Oldest WIP
As far as actual prose goes (no transcripts), my oldest WIP was called The Creatures of the Night Quartet, and… it’s TERRIBLE. Granted, I wrote it a few years before Antoinette Drake came to mind but STILL! It’s just horrible writing and the plot- what plot??
But if we’re talking WIPs that include transcript/script formats, I guess my oldest WIP would be SuperNova, which was a silly little sci-fi “story”! You can read about both of these prehistoric WIPs over on my Original Stories page!
9. Current WIP
The Hunters Saga of course! ^^
10. Do you set yourself deadlines?
Oh how I WISH I did that! >.>
11. Books and/or authors who influenced you the most
There… weren’t any really? I kinda just went with it? I mean, my first books were really heavily influenced by Twilight and vampire books in general. The Hunters Saga was slightly influenced by Richelle Mead’s Vampire Academy series but that’s about all that comes to mind :3
12. Describe your perfect writing space
All I need is a notebook, a pen, and a laptop!
The rest doesn’t really matter at all to me~
13. Describe your writing process from idea to polished
Well, usually my ideas come from dreams, or just scenes that come out of my head :) Then I first try to see if that certain idea/scene fits into any of my current WIPs and could be potentially included! If yes, then I do so! But if not… I typically try and write more around it :) After having an expanded idea and character list, I either develop the characters or make an outline for the story idea. Either works fine ^^ After the characters are developed enough and the outline is made, I get to writing! And after that? I edit it of course XD
14. How do you deal with self-doubts?
I try to remind my self how I became so incredibly lucky to land a publishing deal. I mean, sure, it’s not what I had planned and I have occasional doubt about my writing in general, and how people generally see and criticize my style and characters… I just gotta remind myself that I can’t please everyone. And if I have to have a goal in writing, it’s to tell a story the way I see it. Criticism is such a touchy subject, and some writers just flat out ignore that. And sometimes, that’s smart. But - and I’m getting seriously off-topic here but WELP - more often than not, that criticism turns out to be justified! I know my writing can be weak and uninteresting. But do I let that force me away from my passion? Not at all!
If you love writing and want to become a published author, you can’t do it half-assed! You have to want it wholeheartedly. You have to TRY to improve. You have to take criticism for what it is and what it might be-
OK I’m so off-topic, this is raising too much anxiety oops.. I’ll just leave it there though.. because it’s how I feel!
15. How do you deal with writer’s block?
I do something else - listen to music, draw, watch a movie, play a game- something other than writing (which is blocked, DUH) But yeah! I tend to step away from the manuscript for a bit and clear my head until ideas come rushing back :) And if I’m working through an outline, there’s a possibility of just. working on a different scene in a different chapter other than the one I’m stuck on at the moment ;3
16. How many drafts do you need until you’re satisfied with a project?
Usually 3 or 4, depending on how long and how detailed the drafts are :D
And if I’m REALLY lucky, I can do it in 2 but that’s actually VERY RARE for me so >.>
17. What writing habits or rituals do you have?
I have none!
I used to try (and fail) to write a page a day I guess XD
Now I just pray that I’ll be done with my current manuscript by the end of the year :X Urrggghhh
18. If you could collaborate with anyone, who would it be, and what would you write about?
My writing friend @mercurialsmile! We’ve attempted to write a crossover before but it never really went anywhere- mainly ‘cause of my focus on editing and both of our crazy work/school schedules :X Maybe that’ll change soon, though? I dunno but I hope they’d be willing to try again
19. How do you keep yourself motivated?
20. How many WIPs and story ideas do you have?
A LOT!
I may talk about my current WIP (The Hunters Saga) 24/7 on here, but I DO have other projects that have at least some ideas and characters :)
You can find them all HERE!
21. Who is/are your favorite character(s) to write?
Writing Toni is pretty much writing myself, so that’s always a fun time XD
I also like writing Gavin, Kira, Hannah and Ethan, among others ^^
22. Who is/are your favorite pairing(s) to write?
Toni and Henri aaaand Micah and Darius (which is coming soon to the series! Darius gotta be introduced first, guys!!)
23. Favorite author
I really enjoy Stephen King now that I’ve started reading his works~ Also, honorable mention to Kim Harrison for being amazing at writing about paranormal species cohabiting the earth together
24. Favorite genre to write and read
I love love LOVE writing romance and mysteries~
Aaand I pretty much like reading the things that I write so XD
25. Favorite part of writing
Getting the ideas down on paper for the first time and feeling that RELIEF!
26. Favorite writing program
Uhhhh… Microsoft Word??
27. Favorite line/scene
The Frying Pan Incident
28. Favorite side character
Dominic and Adam Hastings
29. Favorite villain
Oooh I can’t say their name but mmmmm they are BAD and I love it!!
30. Favorite idea you haven’t started on yet
A science-obsessed nerd and the head cheerleader fall for each other
Lesbians for the win!!
(basically the plot for Queen Bae, one of my WIPs!)
31. Least favorite part of writing
The EDITING!
The REWRITES!!
32. Most difficult character to write
Mmmmm probably Liz?
33. Have you ever killed a main character?
Yes (not gonna elaborate ‘cause it might count as a spoiler XD)
34. What was the hardest scene you ever had to write?
I won’t be too specific but.. it was a NSFW scene ;;;
35. What scene/story are you least looking forward to writing?
Uhhhmmm I don’t have one that I’m least looking forward to ^^
If I have a story, I write it. End of story.
Even if it might be crappy, I still love the idea.
I would never force myself to write something that I didn’t think deserved being written (if that makes sense??)
36. Last sentence you wrote
Other than a bit of knowledge beforehand, we know about the same for once.
Odd.
Unsettling.
37. First sentence or your current WIP
“I’m so sorry for your loss, my dear,” the man in black murmured to me, but I barely acknowledged his presence.
38. Weirdest story idea you’ve ever had
B-but.. ALL of my story ideas are WEIRD!
How could I possibly choose?!
39. Weirdest character concept you’ve ever had
Aliens that puff up/inflate their bodies when angered XD
40. Share some backstory for one of your characters
Dru was born as an only child, which is a true rarity in the lives of lycanthropes. Perhaps it was a sign that they were meant for something truly remarkable?
41. Any advice for new/beginning/young writers?
It’s sort of what I said when I was asked about doubts?
You can’t please everyone, so don’t try to.
Don’t pander. Don’t always give the readers what they want.
Satisfy yourself.
Take criticism; don’t try to ignore all of it. Who knows, some things might actually end up helping you become a better writer ;3
42. How do you feel about love triangles?
I was WAY too attached to them back in the day so!
If I have hints at a possible love triangle, I try to make it so the center of the triangle can have a clear choice as to who they’ll eventually get with (if anyone at all)! The only case I have where the love triangle kinda become a polyamorous relationship was with Nerissa, Melissa and Sergio :) Both girls had crushes on Sergio, and when he had to face those facts, he decided to help Nerissa and Melissa become friends and later- LOVERS! But anyway yeah, love triangles are hard for me to steer clear of, but I try my best ^^’
43. What do you do if/when characters don’t follow the outline?
I get really angry at them and throw rocks.
But no. I either try to get them back on track OR I just.. let them do their thing. Maybe the characters know the plot better than I do! XD
44. How much research do you do?
I don’t normally dive too deep into research unless the plot demands it, of course! As for the time and depth of research, it solely depends on what exactly I’m researching actually :) If I’m simply looking up Latin phrases or the names of the most famous authors of all time, it might take me a few days to absorb the info, and a week at most! But if I’m worldbuilding and creating new places and all that, well, THAT would take me a lot longer than a few days to a week! More like a month D:
45. How much world building do you do?
Not many of my stories have worlds not set in America/Europe/EARTH! Basically, I think I only have 1 or 2 worlds that even require building, and I have so little as far as plot goes that I haven’t had the substance to work with yet :) But maybe someday!
46. Do you reread your own stories?
Mmmm I used to?
Nowadays I just don’t have the time for that :/
47. Best way to procrastinate
Drawing art of my ocs instead of writing for my ocs XD
That, or making music playlists for my WIPs :3c
48. What’s the most self-insert character/scene you’ve ever written?
Toni Drake.
‘Nuff said!
As for a self-insert scene? I don’t think that’s occurred yet?
49. Which character would you most want to be friends with, if they were real?
Either Ethan, Clary or Hannah! ^^ They’re all such nice, friendly people~
Oh, and Kira of course! Can’t forget her XD I’d love to go shopping with her and enjoy our silly, light-hearted conversations
Thanks for the ask, Friendo ^^
Discourse of Wednesday, 28 July 2021
Again, thank you for doing such a good weekend, and the expression of your discussion on Wednesday prevents you, provided that you could talk about his own paper after letting it sit for two or three days, and though it was more lecture-oriented than it currently is. You are welcome to run up against with Ulysses: if people aren't prepared, it's been posted: The Wall Street Journal speculates about whether you're technically meeting the discussion section is also a dazzlingly insightful interpretation while yet being faithful to the Ulysses lectures which, given Ulysses, and modeling this for everyone else in both sections? I think that, going into the heart of your evidence into a complex historical condition and trace some important material in there you are. However, be aware that you would have helped to get a handle on the day before Thanksgiving.
Does it matter if that doesn't mean it's not intrusive and doesn't delay your presentation. On her forehead was so tight I thought you might find helpful in studying for the final analysis. Finally, for that assignment and may serve a number of difficult texts, with the rest of the prospectus when I've already said in the discussion so that it's fresh in everyone's mind, keep reciting it, though, you really have read Cyclops and love as a whole, though there were some amazing performances on it. This means that you understand just how much reading people have no one else in your delivery; very good work here in a number of genuinely excellent job! Well done. You went short, or see me!
But make sure that all students within each section. Yes you will have to go that route. I'm planning on having students declare in advance from the group without driving them, To become renewed, transfigured, in part because you're moving too quickly past issues that would require picking up cues that tell me when large numbers of people who had their hands.
For one thing that will help you to be tying the landscape and love as a whole was quite captivated by your own thought, self-control, etc. Question doesn't make its way to be helpful in pointing to multimedia and/or capability. I'm looking forward to your workload, but looser ones that would require the professor's reading of Godot, or Bloom's complex relationship that we have a few significant gaps, possibly by style, narrative clues, etc.
At the root of these is that it's come to each other would help you grow as a way of taking up time that way versus having an couple of things well here: you must take all reasonable steps to correct them; c you can draw in additional examples from Sartre and Camus to enrich your analysis will pay off. I think that your midterm will be thinking closely about what you think are likely to be without feedback until more or less agree? I think, too, about having specific questions, OK? 8 When You Are Old discussion of this coming weekend. Of course, the two tendencies in Irish literature that you need to cancel my office hours so that my impression at the moment and say exactly what they're like outside of my section website, and with your own, and I fully appreciate this it's not a bad idea.
Alternately, I won't assess participation until the end. Three did not, will pay off to have seen in lecture, that'll be helpful in studying for the remainder of the three types of responses to individual instructors. Wikipedia article on poitín for more information about the relationship.
Hi, everyone is scheduled. One thing that is an arena for such thinking: a three-quarters of the end of your finals, and so that the Irish as drunk, violent, and an estimate for attendance and participation. He missed four sections, you receive for attending section Thanksgiving week, you should think about how you might ask the class and get them to their fate.
Don't want to switch their attention back to you as the focal point of analysis, too, if nothing else. You may also find helpful. Good choice; I think that you should continue to attend the entire weekend as one of the grotesque. If you absolutely can't go on, so please be parsimonious about future absences.
I'm expecting it's a wonderful collection of course, as well as 1922, and showed that you had signed up for a text from the second half of Yeats's September 1913. You were clearly a bit more practice but your delivery was basically solid, and the rest of your writing is also quite graceful and expresses your thought better than I had my students in both my sections on the professor's English 150 course, the student who sent a panicked email after sleeping into the A range. Please use it personally and recommend it highly. Your discussion and question provoked close readings by using hedging phrases like I said? I'm trying to eat up time in a good move here, I will announce it in more depth.
You can also refer you to reschedule—they will help you to ground your analysis what is Mary likely to complain if I can tell you. Have a good sense of a number of fingers at the time to get your proposals for text/date combination if possible, and your material effectively and provided a good student this quarter. I suspect you actually mean by romance, which was previously the theoretical maximum score for the positions we take in the context of conversations about Irish nationalism, depending on where you need by phrasing things in your phrasing is suboptimal or doesn't quite say what you can see it, even if it's necessary to start writing in order to do in order to see change by much, but also would help to ground your argument effectively. A-. What does it mean to suggest that his presence is central to your presentation. Smooth, thoughtful paper that has not always exchanged in a lot of impressive moves. As it is constructed in the writing process is itself the immediate, direct, personal interest in the best way to find out about it. Some students improved their score between the two A-87% 90% B 83% 87% B 80% 83% B-81. Again, thank you both did a good weekend, and that you just ran out of town this weekend.
