For those of you who may be tight on your budget, especially for the people I know who live in Appalachia and frequently struggle with poverty and normally go to Walmart because it’s the only thing around, we know that searching for the cheapest food can be tricky if you’re shopping in basically a giant warehouse. We know the rules, yada yada yada. Buy Great Value, not the name brand. Sell your soul to coupons. Live on leftovers. Buy bulk if you can. Those help, but not as much as choosing cheap purchases in the first place. Right here, straight up, is the cheapest possible food you can buy at Walmart. Ramen Noodles. Hey, they don’t have a reputation without having a reason for it. Basically any type of pasta that strikes you as obviously cheap. A big box of bowtie pasta for 75 cents? GET IT. Birds Eye Veggies. Cheap cuts of meat… you know, the no-name brand, $1 a pound meat. Whole chickens. While it is on the more expensive side, going for $5-6, and it requires lots of prep, whole chickens can last you for a very, very long time. For a cheaper and easier (yet smaller) alternative, buy whole cornish hens. A package of generic hot dogs. Whatever milk you get, make sure you get the Great Value Whole Fat milk. While it’s not “healthy”, per se, being underweight isn’t healthy, either. An 18-pack of eggs. Great Value, of course. Peanut butter’s pretty cheap and a good source of protein. Nice if you can buy sandwich supplies too. Generic white bread. Generic white rice. Beans. Those are seriously cheap. And you can easily grow your own with a water bottle and a wet paper towel. Cooked rotisserie chickens. Those are relatively cheap and good if you’re in a situation to where your power is out due to a snowstorm or something. Fresh potatoes. They’re incredibly cheap and filling. Chili’s pretty cheap, too. A big bag of generic apples if you’re worried about fruit. Those huge Malt-O-Meal cereal bags. They’re about the same price all across, no matter what kind you get, so you can have a nice amount of choices when it comes to cereal. I LIVED on those as a kid in the morning. Dried, steel-cut oats. I remember eating these in front of the TV when I was a kid for HOURS, and my parents had no problem financially with fulfilling my dried oats addiction. Onions. Those are 30 cents each. Saute them and mix them with your ramen noodles and you’ve got yourself a meal under a dollar. A huge tub of plain yogurt. Seriously, it’s so HUGE that you’ll have trouble being able to fit it into your fridge. And for $3, that’s a heck of a lot of yogurt. It’ll taste disgusting, but it’ll give you lots of nutrients and probiotics, which is great for you if you’re sick. Carrots. Those are also cheap, although I hate them. Maybe it’s because I ate them so much as a kid. Lentils. This goes back to the beans idea, but whatever. Bananas are cheap if you’re not keen on apples as a fruit source. Ransack the soup aisle- soup in general is pretty cheap unless you’re going for the organic stuff. Great Value bottled water. I know, I know… not food. But you can buy 78 of these bad boys for $5. Compare that to 5 water bottles for $5 at McDonald’s. You can’t get away with that perfect “we’re cheap” reputation, Walmart. You just can’t. Cookies, like Oreos or Chips Ahoy, sell at a pretty reasonable price. That was our #1 dessert as a kid, and I still love them. A huge bag of Utz Potato Chips. Now, they have a big bag full of tons of little bags that are both cheap and perfect for your lunch box, and that was what I lived on when I went to school. Popcorn. Bagged is more expensive, but still pretty cheap at $2-ish a bag. Chickpeas are pretty underrated. 57 cents a can we’re talking about. That being said, go to the canned veggies aisle and see if you can find anything else obviously cheap there. Generic granola bars. If you’re allergic to nuts like me, you have to do some scouring on the back, but you can walk away with spending $2 on 16 of these. And they have a lot of energy. If you’re craving ice cream, freeze the plain yogurt you just bought. Canned tuna. It may be small, but it’s better than nothing when you only have a dollar on hand. Also an important source of protein. Spinach can come cheap, but make sure you don’t accidentally buy the organic one. Generic spinach is hard to come by in Walmart. Corn when it’s in season. 75 cents an ear is not bad at all.

Paleo for Picky Eaters: 7 Tips for Kids and Adults

There’s no one set definition of “picky eater,” but in general, picky eaters refuse to try new foods and/or eat only a very limited set of foods. Depending on which study you look up, the percentage of people who are picky eaters varies a lot although it does tend to peak in the toddler years and go down by age 6 or so. Some people are picky eaters for their whole lives, though – there are adults who still gag if they touch a vegetable.
Picky eaters tend to eat less meat (except for processed meat – they’ll eat bologna but not chicken drumsticks!) fruit, and vegetables – in other words, basically all the Paleo staples. If this is you (or your kid), the thought of eating meat and veg every day might seem totally overwhelming – here are 7 tips to help make it work.
1. Deal with any digestive issues right away
Some picky eaters report feeling really full, really fast, or they get bad heartburn. Other people are picky specifically because they know that lots of foods irritate their digestive system, so they feel nervous about trying new ones. Some suggestions for dealing with this:
Digestive enzymes – can help with the feeling of food sitting like a brick in your stomach.
Probiotics – can help with gassiness, bloating, diarrhea/constipation, and assorted other gut problems. Probiotic foods are good in theory, but could be really challenging for people who are already picky eaters.
Fiber supplements – picky eaters tend to have lower fiber intake and more issues with constipation. If that’s a concern, a fiber supplement might be helpful.
Food sensitivities: if you’re sensitive to FODMAPs or fructose or anything else, get it off your plate
This is really the low-hanging fruit of picky eating: if your (or your child’s) pickiness is really caused by digestive reactions rather than taste/texture aversion, then you can get pretty far just by healing your gut.
2. Lean on “gray area” foods for the transition.
It rarely works well to go cold turkey from a diet of hot dogs and white bread to a diet of liver and raw broccoli, especially for a picky eater. A more reasonable approach could include adding new foods slowly while seeking out more Paleo-friendly alternatives for staples. For example, plain white rice with butter is better than bread, if only because white rice doesn’t contain the same antinutrients that wheat does.
Or if the picky eater in your house will only eat super processed meat (bologna, hot dogs, etc.), what about some healthier versions of those? There are lots of Paleo-friendly organic hot dogs in the world; they’re a bit more expensive, but they do exist. Work with what you have, and slowly move towards a more unprocessed direction.
3. Find foods and preparation methods that work with your (or your child’s) tastes.
There’s no one single food that’s required for Paleo, and with a little creativity, you can accommodate a lot of different tastes. Depending on what specifically is the issue, here are some suggestions:
General aversion to new foods: repeated low-pressure exposure (even just having it on the table so you can see/smell it can be helpful), imitation foods like Paleo bread/bread mixes, and vegetables in the same family as ones you already like. For example, if you already like carrots, try rainbow carrots, beets, and winter squash. If you already like onions, try leeks. If you already like broccoli, try cauliflower, broccolini, or Chinese broccoli.
Won’t eat meat unless it’s breaded/fried: Use almond flour or almond meal as a breading instead and carry right on! For example, try these mustard-crusted drumsticks.
Sensitive to bitterness/hates vegetables: it’s OK if you don’t want to eat tons of vegetables at first. Eat lots of animal foods and berries and use lots of spices for the antioxidants. When you start adding vegetables, roast them with lots of fat and add salt to taste. Or try sweeter vegetables with honey or maple syrup in the sauce, like these honey-roasted carrots or this this stuffed squash.
Won’t eat anything mixed: no problem; separate everything, just do it with Paleo foods!
4. Cutting caloric drinks might help.
Some research suggests that picky eaters make up for the food they won’t eat by drinking milk, juice, or other high-calorie liquids between meals. Water is always fine, but taking away calorie-dense drinks between meals might be the perfect way for a picky eater to work up enough of an appetite to legitimately want food at mealtime.
And as a bonus, getting rid of caloric drinks between meals will also help cut down on some of the extra sugar. Picky eaters already tend to eat more sugar than non-picky eaters; getting rid of fruit juice and sugary soda can really help. Can’t stand plain water? Try sparkling water, flavored soda water, or slowly diluting juice with water a bit more each time.
5. Don’t stress too much about nutrient deficiencies
This review found that picky eaters generally aren’t that much more at risk of nutrient deficiencies than typical eaters. Granted, typical eaters on the standard American diet aren’t usually doing so hot nutrient-wise, but they’re not typically keeling over from scurvy or rickets.  Vitamin E and folate were nutrients of some concern for picky eaters, but unless the person is literally eating only five foods or something totally extreme, the review indicates that it’s not likely to be an emergency. Humans are resilient creatures and adapt well to even less-than-ideal diets – there’s plenty of time to ease into things and add new foods slowly.
6. For kids, texture exposure might be key
This study found that when researchers gave picky children a yogurt that they liked, changing the texture would cause them to reject it even though changing the color didn’t. This study also suggested that texture plays a huge role in picky eating. Specifically:
Eggs seem to be problematic, for whatever reason.
Slimy/mushy textures are unappealing (slimy food is gross to just about everyone, but mushy foods like applesauce, overcooked vegetables, etc. bear mentioning).
The texture of raw vegetables can be challenging.
None of these are required on Paleo and you can skip them all if you like! Or skip whatever other food is just Not An Option for you.
Fascinatingly, this study found that when children could play with a texture with their hands first, they were more likely to eat foods with that texture. Asking kids to help arrange or prepare raw vegetables (like carrot sticks or orange slices) might be a good way to get in that first exposure.
7. Make it a dialogue
This study takes an interesting perspective: a lot of “picky eating” is in the eye of the parent. It’s normal for kids to temporarily go on crazes for particular foods or refuse to eat certain foods for a while. It’s not personal; it’s just what kids do. If parents get really anxious about this and start pressuring the kid, the kid picks up on it and gets anxious and resistant right back, and boom: an actual problem is born!
And high-pressure tactics don’t even work that well – this study found that pressuring kids to eat wasn’t associated with them actually eating more vegetables. Insisting on the short-term goal (getting the kid to eat the food on the plate right now) takes away from the long-term goal (teaching healthy eating patterns/habits for life).
Instead of insisting on a particular outcome, the first study suggests…
Giving a choice: instead of “You have to eat all the vegetables on your plate,” try “would you like carrots or broccoli?”
Accepting a certain number of bites as a compromise
Explaining why certain foods are good to eat
Asking the child how he/she feels (“Does your stomach feel full?”)
Involving the child in grocery shopping/meal prep
Basically, instead of “I need to make my kid eat this,” the approach is “my kid and I will communicate to help him/her learn and practice healthy eating patterns.” No word from the authors whether this approach works with spouses, partners, and the inner five-year-old that lives inside all of us, but it can’t hurt to keep the focus on building long-term habits rather than fixating on any particular piece of broccoli.
As for the individual household rules – like whether you will or won’t make separate meals for the picky eaters, or what kinds of snacks are allowed between meals – that’s for each family to decide based on what works for them, but the dialogue/long-term approach is a good way to start thinking about it.

Well, maybe not every day, but on most days, I include at least 2-3 raw egg yolks in my diet. Here’s why I eat raw egg yolks almost every day…

Eating raw eggs may not be what all the popular kids are doing, but since raw egg yolks are just brimming with beneficial nutrients I figure it’s worth the social stigma.

Q: What makes egg yolks so special?
A: Actually, there’s a lot of densely-packed nutrients in egg yolks!

A: Here’s why raw can be better than cooked when it comes to egg yolks:
Heat alters the nutrients in eggs and destroys the enzymes that help us assimilate them. Cooked eggs are still a decent source of nutrition, but eating raw egg yolks takes the nutrient-density to a whole new level. They are highly digestible and full of readily-available nutrients.
Raw egg yolks are super gentle on the digestive system. In fact, raw egg yolks are one of the first foods available on the GAPS diet intro, which is for people who have severe health problems originating in the gut.
In addition, eating raw egg yolks is much less likely to trigger an allergic reaction, so even sensitive individuals may be able to tolerate them.
Now, don’t get me wrong: I eat cooked eggs too, and I don’t think cooking totally destroys an egg’s nutritional value. But going raw has a few distinct benefits and you might as well take advantage of those every now and then, right?

In fact, some insanely good ice cream recipes require eight (yes, eight) egg yolks!! (I’ve made this and I just whisk them into the cream mixture without cooking them if I want to keep the yolks raw.)
You can just blend some raw milk or kefir with a few egg yolks and natural sweetener like raw honey–it’s kind of like easy ice cream! Talk about satisfying a sweet tooth with something healthy. 😉
For my kids (who weirdly don’t like smoothies) I stir a yolk up with some organic peanut butter and raw honey. They don’t know the difference and they’ve asked for this snack quite a bit!
Q: Why not eat raw egg whites?
A: There are differing opinions on this, but Nourishing Traditions is fairly adamant that raw egg whites aren’t something to eat every day because they contain anti-nutrients and enzyme inhibitors, and may cause digestive issues. These properties are neutralized by cooking.
UPDATE: I’ve since disregarded my fear of raw egg whites. The practice never fully “clicked” with me, and after some research I’ve determined that for most people eating a nutrient-dense diet and with a healthy digestive system, raw egg whites are probably not a big issue. Mercola explains some more on this here. It’s a personal decision, but it’s always good to hear both sides of an issue before deciding. And as always, listen to your body and see how your digestion feels after consuming raw whites.
Q: Ok, so I eat raw egg yolks – but is it safe?
A: There is a LOT of heated debate out there about whether or not it’s safe to eat raw eggs. I’ve done some research myself, and here’s my take on the whole issue:
According to Dr. Mercola’s web site, only 1 in 30,000 eggs even has a salmonella problem. If I eat three raw eggs a day, statistics say it would take more than 27 years before I’d actually run across one with salmonella. Of course, I know life isn’t about statistics, but you get the point.
Raw egg yolks from a quality source are even less likely to contain salmonella. Healthy, pastured chickens with lots of sun exposure aren’t going have much salmonella to pass on to their eggs.
A healthy body is equipped to fight bacteria on its own. We encounter bad bacteria all the time. If we take good care of our bodies they can put up a good fight against the bad stuff. If you have a weak or compromised immune system, though, you might want to be more careful. (Taking probiotics helps.)
Fresh eggs are less likely to harbor a lot of salmonella. To determine if an egg is fresh, bring it to room temperature first. Check for cracks: there should be none. Roll the egg on a flat surface: it should wobble. Check the white and yolk: both should be firm and not easily broken. If you think it’s not fresh, don’t eat it.

Had a CNA tell me that being raised vegan causes harm because meat gives children important immune system building blocks, nutrients that can only be replaced with artificial supplements that pale in comparison to the real thing, prevents heart disease, and that they've seen vegans come into the hospital with organ failure because of their diet. This all sounds like bullshit to me, but I can't refute it. What do you think?
That is absolute bullshit, and I’ve never heard anything like that before. I’m actually pretty astounded that a CNA would say something like that. So thank you for your ask.
There is something I’ve learned over the years. Just because someone is certified in something, or they have a degree, it doesn’t mean their word is infallible. Especially if other people who are certified and knowledgeable refute those statements (not speaking about myself, but other doctors who recommend plant-based diets).
I’ve gone to a certified dietician, who herself was vegan, and recommended vegan diets for those who wanted to be healthier. She was employed by Arizona State University. You don’t employ a dietician who recommends a diet that will result in organ failure. That’s ridiculous.
ASU even has a page on their site for recommending students to eat more fruits and vegetables. Not about eating more meat and dairy. Again, they don’t seem to be worried about causing the deaths of their students by recommending eating more plant-based foods.

There’s even a website for where you can find doctors who eat a plant-based diet. Clearly, those doctors aren’t concerned about organ failure or “immune system building blocks” from their diets. (I’ve never heard that phrase before so I’m not sure what it means, they may have been talking about the structure of protein and how plant-proteins are supposedly deficient, but that’s been debunked.)
And as far as raising kids to be vegan, ask yourself: what kind of foods do you find in the baby isle? Are infant foods made up of ham and cheese and beef? Fish and chicken and eggs? Or is it all sauces made of fruits and vegetables?
More and more people are raising their children vegan, and you never hear about all the healthy, happy, veggie-eating kids. You hear about the extremely rare situation of parents starving their kids into malnutrition - and then veganism is blamed for it. When the fact of the matter is, doctors specifically tell parents to feed their kids fruits and vegetables because it’s healthy for them.
And as for supplements paling to the “real thing?” We all take supplements, whether we know it or not. No matter what diets we have. Packaged foods, especially cereals and milks of every kind, are fortified with vitamins and minerals. Every meat-eater eats B12 supplements created in a lab - they just obtain it through animal feed via the cow or chicken or pig they just ate, rather than directly from the source. Sometimes the B12 is injected right into the animals because they can’t obtain B12 from plants any more than we can because of modern agricultural methods.
So your CNA doesn’t understand the basics of how we obtain nutrition in our foods, and that’s understandable. Being a certified nursing assistant does not make someone an expert in nutrition. My only concern is that they are repeating misleading (or just plain false) information, and presenting it as medical advice.
One last thought. It has been well-documented that eating less meat prevents heart disease. I’m also curious as to what specific organs they say will fail on a vegan diet, since no organ I know of relies on saturated fats and cholesterol to function.
