oh my god it’s laika day everyone drop what you’re doing… we honour a little dog who was sent up into space 65 years ago today. she was found as a three year old stray mongrel wandering the streets of moscow. her ability to endure hardy conditions got her chosen as the candidate for a journey she was never meant to survive. she passed away seven hours after liftoff. I hope she died dreaming of chasing rabbits up in the stars I love u laika forever and ever

IF YOU LIVE IN THE US AND WOULD RATHER NOT DIE FROM BEING HIT BY A CAR
please submit a comment on the NHTSA proposal to implement pedestrian safety test requirements for cars and trucks!!
It would finally make manufacturers design vehicles that are safer for pedestrians and cyclists, instead of the massive wall-of-steel front ends that are excessively deadly for no reason. Europe already has rules like this, but unless we comment in approval, they're not going to do anything to halt the increasing pedestrian deaths in our country.
And please share, even if you don't live in the US!

calling animals "high quality" is so strange to me. whether it's because someone wants to eat them or own them it's just so weird.
my dog isn't high quality he's my best friend and my baby. the cow someone wants to eat isn't high quality it's just a nice cow (that should get to live their life btw)
the language around the commodification of animals will always have me raising my eyebrow

This is apparently a hotter take than I thought but: hating on lawyers as a profession, calling them inherently dishonest etc. is politically reactionary. It discourages defendants from seeking legal counsel, puts forth the idea that it’s inherently suspicious to insist on seeing a lawyer before you answer police questioning (your constitutional right!) etc. which ultimately just benefits the state in making it easier for them to convict you. This is one of those things that “progressives” who were raised conservative often don’t realize is one of the parts of their parents’ worldview they should question more, but they should. Not only are lawyers not The Problem with “our system,” but having someone who is educated in the law whose job is to represent your interests in court — getting one regardless of your ability to pay, even! — is in fact one of the best parts of it.

Because I remember disinformation being spread around the last few elections and I’m sure assholes will bring it back:
YOU CAN’T VOTE ONLINE.
YOU CAN’T VOTE FROM YOUR PHONE.
IN MANY STATES THERE ARE LEGAL CONSEQUENCES FOR PHOTOGRAPHING YOUR BALLOT.
DO NOT WEAR CAMPAIGN GEAR TO THE POLLS.
DO NOT TRY TO PERSUADE PEOPLE TO VOTE FOR A CANDIDATE AT THE POLLS.
DO NOT ENGAGE IN ANY KIND OF POLITICAL DISCOURSE AT THE POLLS.
NO ELECTION IS EVER A SURE THING, EVEN IF YOU’RE IN THE BLUEST OR REDDEST OF STATES. IF SOMEONE TRIES TO TELL YOU THAT YOU CAN SIT THIS ONE OUT, THEY ARE EITHER IGNORANT OR MALICIOUS.
VOTE.

Some of you are literally watching the right wing continuously try to expand the definition of "pedophilia" to include "existing around a child while queer," and then agreeing with them when they say pedophiles deserve to be summarily executed.
Not only does this place innocent people in danger of political executions, it also puts children in danger, as most children who are sexually abused have this done by someone close to them, and feelings that they would be responsible for the death of their abuser if they reported leads to lower rates of reporting. It also leads to higher rates of abusers murdering their victims when they're found out because the punishment will be the same anyway.
Part of being on the left is realizing that it's better to let 100 guilty men go free than to wrongly convict one. Another part of being on the left is realizing that one's life is never something others have the right to take away- even the most evil people alive. Yes, that includes mass murderers and rapists and pedophiles. Once you make one group acceptable to kill, you give others a vested interest in defining groups they have prejudice against into that group.
You have to start dealing with the fact that no crime makes one's life forfeit. Not even the worst most depraved and sadistic acts. The worst people alive have rights, and if you can't accept that they deserve them, at least try to accept that it is to your benefit that they retain rights no matter what they're accused of. And if you can't do even that, well... you just might be the kind of person who would cut off your nose to spite your face.
If you want to protect victims, if you want to protect minority groups, you have to realize that sex crimes, or any crimes at all, do not deserve the death penalty. Period.

I don't understand when people say going vegan helps individual animals. Surely for the demand /supply to be affected, a certain number of people need to go vegan first?
It helps individuals in that all individuals are part of a collective, and any action that affects the collective of course affects individuals. If you’re asking how you going vegan would save individual animals, that isn’t really how collective boycott works.
If you were buying your meat directly from a farmer, who slaughters that animal specifically to meet your demand, it would be different. That’s not how supply and demand operates anymore, not under capitalism at least. As a collective though, we aim to economically sabotage the animal agriculture industry through boycott, therefore withdrawing our demand from the market, which does result in a lower supply (fewer animals killed) with enough people doing it.
The trouble is that this is hard to measure, because global consumption is still increasing. More nations are eating closer to the way the US does, despite us not having enough land or resources to support that. We don’t have enough to support the number of meat eaters we have now. The rise of veganism still means that this increase is lower than it otherwise would have been, but what we need is more people to commit to boycott.
People often argue that going vegan ‘won’t make any difference’ to animals, but that is just demonstrably untrue. That ribcage on your plate belonged to someone, that fish is not some abstract number in a profit chart, it is a life. You are choosing to buy the corpse of that animal, and therefore funding more slaughter, more pollution, more deforestation. The old idiom is true, that no snowflake on an avalanche ever feels responsible. But you are responsible for your actions and you are making a difference, the only question is whether or not you care to make that difference a positive one.

Not gonna start a fight with anyone in particular, but "some people's livelihoods rely on animal agriculture" annoys me.
Yeah, some people's income comes from killing and/or abusing animals. And some people's income comes from abusing people. Living off it doesn't make it right.
Like would you say it's ok for higher ups in things like Amazon or Shein to enforce horrible conditions onto others because that's what gets them paid?
I can very much want someone to be able to live comfortably and also want them to not make the money for that from shit like factory farming.
