"sailing is like sex. do it wrong, and it'll make you sick. but do it right, and there's no feeling in the world like it." @ mal ! rip
ᴅʀᴀɢᴏɴ ᴀɢᴇ II ꜱᴇɴᴛᴇɴᴄᴇ ꜱᴛᴀʀᴛᴇʀꜱ
he’d gestured at one of the boats run aground in the sand,   the sea lapping at its carcass.   “i’ve never actually been on a boat,”   he mused,   looking to distract from the silence that had fallen between them.   he could have sworn he saw a flicker of mischief in blackwall’s eyes when the warrior responded,    “sailing is like sex. do it wrong,   and it'll make you sick.   but do it right,   and there's no feeling in the world like it.”
he has to be doing this on purpose,   thought the mage,   warmth coiling through him.   he forgot about the black lotus he’d knelt to collect.  the coast’s waves thundered against the rocky shore,   battering them lightly with ocean spray.   and the way he leaned into that damned voice,   the low rumble of it —
“sounds like you’ve done it often,”   he said,   half distractedly.   wait.  the color drained from his face.   “sailing.   i mean sailing,  of course.”   maker.    no one else heard that.
he managed to recover himself,   though,   adding,  “i mean,   i can barely swim —”   or, well,   not like this.   a dragon was as good as useless like this.   he missed wading into the sea,   water cooling scales and dripping down his wings.   he would lay in the sun afterwards for its warmth until lulled into a sleep.   “that far at sea sounds unthinkable  ...”

MORTAL KOMBAT 1 FLIRTY/SUGGESTIVE INTROS WITH OC
Tumblr media
A/N : This is my OC Mal who is the daughter of Quan Chi. I’m going to be making an MK fic soon with this OC but will start all the way at MK 9. Tell me what y’all think of her
MATURE : MINORS DON’T INTERACT
Mal is the daughter of Quan Chi. Mal is witty, sarcastic, and unpredictable. Even though she has left her father to join the Earthrealm warriors, she still has an evil sadistic nature. She is a Cambion which is a half human and half demon. She is also a very powerful sorcerer. (Mal is a female and goes by she/her pronouns. Mal is also bisexual)
This is for MK 1
CHARACTERS
Liu Kang, Raiden, Johnny Cage, Kung Lao, Mileena, Kitana
MAL VS CHARACTERS
LIU KANG VS MAL
MAL : Have I told you how undeniably hot you are?
LIU KANG : You only tell me 50 times a day
MAL : Keep it real. Have we fucked in other timelines?
LIU KANG : What makes you want to know?
MAL : I’ve always wondered what it would be like to “do it” with a God.
LIU KANG : You’ve always wondered what it would be like to “do it” with me
LIU KANG : I don’t wish to hurt you
MAL : Oh baby, you’ll be the one on the ground “hurt”
LIU KANG : Kung Lao seems to peak an interest in you
MAL : You’re so hot when you’re jealous
MAL : I never thought a God would be interested in me
LIU KANG : I would tell you, you should think of yourself more highly but your ego knows no bounds
MAL : If I can pull a God - I can pull anyone
LIU KANG : To be fair - in other timelines I was also in love with you
LIU KANG : I wish to treat you like a goddess
MAL : Oh my lord - I think I’m turned on right now
LIU KANG : Are you ready for your training?
MAL : If it ends up with you being on top of me then yes
MAL : You don’t have to be so gentle with me. I like it rough
LIU KANG : I’m well aware
RAIDEN VS MAL
MAL : Aww. Do I make you nervous Raiden?
RAIDEN : A woman with your beauty can make anybody nervous
MAL : God you are so fucking hot
RAIDEN : I sometimes don’t know how to handle your straightforwardness
RAIDEN : I did not picture our first date like this
MAL : Don’t wanna wrestle me to the ground?
MAL : I’m sensing you’re a bottom
RAIDEN : I’m sensing myself becoming embarrassed
MAL : Kung Lao said you have a crush on me
RAIDEN : I - um…don’t know what he’s talking about
MAL : I see someone’s excited to see me
RAIDEN : Why can’t my body ever shut up when it’s around you?
MAL : You know I can read your thoughts right? You’re much dirtier than I thought
RAIDEN : If you could erase the embarrassment out of me - that would be great
RAIDEN : When Johnny told me to “make my move” I did not think it would result in Kombat
MAL : Oh honey, fighting you is just going to turn me on
RAIDEN : You really like me?
MAL : I can show you how much I really like you
MAL : You know the walls are paper thin. I can hear you having…fun with yourself. Did you think about me while you did it?
RAIDEN : By the Elder Gods - I hate myself
JOHNNY CAGE VS MAL
MAL : I don’t know why people compare me to you
JOHNNY CAGE : Because we are two sexy people
JOHNNY CAGE : *flirty* Hello, Mal
MAL : Not happening, baby
JOHNNY CAGE : So, Mileena or Kitana?
MAL : How bout you?
MAL : Your ex-wife was a fool to leave you
JOHNNY CAGE : I’m looking at my new one right in front of me
JOHNNY CAGE : What’s Kung Lao got that I haven’t got?
MAL : Nothing. You’re just fun to mess with
JOHNNY CAGE : You, me, tonight. 9’oclock
MAL : I’m so used to be the one flirting that, that just caught me off guard
MAL : You’re no fun. You’re too easy
JOHNNY CAGE : Why would I deny the hottest girl of the Netherrealm at a chance of me?
MAL : If you lose - you have to go down on me
JOHNNY : Honey, that is a win for me
MAL : Kitana already cannot stand the two of us - let alone for us to ask for a threesome
JOHNNY CAGE : Worth a shot
JOHNNY CAGE : I feel like you put me under your spell
MAL : Your ego is big if you believe you are worthy for that kind of magic
KUNG LAO VS MAL
MAL : I can sense you’re a top
KUNG LAO : Instead of sensing, I can just show you
MAL : You think you can handle a woman like me?
KUNG LAO : I know I can
KUNG LAO : How long do we have to keep this a secret?
MAL : Until I know you’re worthy of being with me
KUNG LAO : Don’t go easy on me
MAL : Me? Easy? Are we talking about me?
KUNG LAO : Raiden is my friend but he cannot handle a woman like you
MAL : So show me how to handle me
KUNG LAO : Anybody but Johnny! Please!
MAL : You’re so cute when you’re jealous
MAL : I will suck the soul out of you
KUNG LAO : *laughs* Of course
MAL : I think you should’ve been the chosen one
KUNG LAO : Smart and beautiful. What more could I ask?
KUNG LAO : Didn’t know I’d meet someone as cocky as me
MAL : Think you met your match?
KUNG LAO : Last night was - amazing
MAL : Oh baby, I know it was
MILEENA VS MAL
MAL : You don’t need keys to drive me crazy
MILEENA : Ugh. I don’t know who flirts worse. You or Cage
MAL : You and Tanya make me want to vomit
MILEENA : Jealous, sorcerer?
MAL : Come on, you know you like me
MILEENA : You tell anyone and I will slaughter you
MILEENA : You could get infected with the Tarkat
MAL : That is a risk I’m willing to take
MILEENA : Kitana has been asking about you
MAL : I’m more into Empresses than Princesses
MILEENA : You want my body but forget I’m infected with the Tarkat
MAL : You forget I’m a powerful sorcerer. All I gotta say is “Abra Cadabra” and go back to going down on you
MILEENA : You know you’re actually cute if you didn’t open your mouth
MAL : Ha! Got you to admit I’m cute!
MILEENA : The blood lust is starting to take control of me
MAL : I should not be turned on right now
MILEENA : Raiden is too weak to handle a woman like you
MAL : I’m guessing you got the backbone for it?
MAL : Tanya is lucky we did not meet first
MILEENA : She is
KITANA VS MAL
KITANA : If you call me “eye candy” you will not walk away from this fight
MAL : God damn it! Johnny stole my line
KITANA : You couldn’t handle an Outworld woman
MAL ; Oh honey, I’m one of the most powerful sorcerers and half demon. Handling you would be like nothing
MAL : I don’t mind this hard to get act you got
KITANA : By the gods you are more relentless than Cage
MAL : Don’t tell me I’m losing my shot to Raiden
KITANA : *chuckles* Survive this and we’ll see
KITANA : You and Johnny Cage? Is that a joke?
MAL : Aww. Are you jealous, princess?
KITANA : You talk a lot of talk but I bet you’re submissive
MAL : *laughs* Did you actually just flirt with me?
KITANA : I don’t care how good you are - I am still not interested
MAL : So you admit that I’m good in bed?
MAL : The only reason I don’t back off is because I know you like me
KITANA : It doesn’t matter if I do - I cannot be with you
KITANA : My sister has been asking about you, sorcerer
MAL : Tell her I’m busy with you
KITANA : If I let you give me a massage - it will just lead to something else
MAL : Is that really a bad thing princess?
OTHER CHARACTERS TALK ABOUT MAL
JOHNNY CAGE : 50 bucks that Mal asks me out
KUNG LAO : Looks like your pockets are going to be empty
KUNG LAO : Oh come on! You’re already the chosen one! You have to have Mal too?
RAIDEN : She chose me, Kung Lao
LIU KANG : Mal is not a prize to be won, Johnny Cage
JOHNNY CAGE : So it sounds like you’re letting me have her
KUNG LAO : How can I compete with god like powers?
LIU KANG : There is no competition to win Mal’s heart…but you simply can’t
KITANA : I always thought you were interested in me
RAIDEN : You are quite the woman, princess but Mal has my heart
JOHNNY CAGE : I should’ve known Mal was into chicks. She’s a hot demon chick
KITANA : Do you ever stop talking?
JOHNNY CAGE : You know if you and Mal don’t work out then maybe we can -
KITANA : You are truly relentless, Cage
KITANA : Something tells me you and Mal have more history then you let on
LIU KANG : Which all shall remain a mystery
RAIDEN : Did you really slap Mal?
KITANA : Yes but she seemed to enjoy it
KUNG LAO : How come I don’t end up with Mal?
LIU KANG ; Is there something you wish to confess to me, Kung Lao?
JOHNNY CAGE : Admit it - you got a thing for Mal-Pal
MILEENA : Quiet, Earthrealmer!
JOHNNY CAGE : So if you and Mal go at it who’s on top and who’s on bottom?
MILEENA : Worry about your own problems, Cage
RAIDEN : I am not telling you if Mal is a “top or bottom” Johnny
JOHNNY CAGE : If you’re a bottom then just say that
LIU KANG : Treat Mal with the utmost respect
RAIDEN : I will, Lord Liu Kang
JOHNNY CAGE : Boooo! She picked you?
LIU KANG : You are surprised she picked a Fire God over an actor?
KUNG LAO : I think Mal has a crush on you
KITANA : I doubt her feelings are real
AND THATS IT!!
send in requests!

Badun Detective Agency Incorrect Quotes (Part 2);
Tumblr media
Trigger warnings; Injuries, slight ableism, insults, etc.
Let me know if I should add to the trigger warnings.
Samantha is @casinotrio1965 's oc.
Previous parts: Part 1.
📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓
Jace: Hey guys, I'm reorganizing my bookshelf. How do you guys usually do it?
Hermie: By color.
Harry: By size.
Reza, offended: You're supposed to do it aphabetically, you absolute heathens.
📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓
Hadie: Eddie.. Eddie.EDDIE. How do you feel?
Eddie: Like I just got hit by a truck.
Reza: That's because you did, you absolute idiot.
Yzla: REZA!
📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓
Harry: Okay I know I said I wouldn't judge but Danny Darling? Seriously? You could do so much better—
Hadie:
Jace: HARRY!
Harry: What? What I say?
📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓
Harry: What's something you guys are better at than Reza?
Hermie: Monster Madness.
Eddie: Yeah, video games.
Yzla: Emotional vulnerability.
Hadie *without a second thought* Remembering things.
Jace: HAYDEN!
Hadie *confused* What?
📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓
Eddie *pointing at Hadie* That is a morally gray child at best.
Hadie: I don't know what you're talking about. I'm an angel.
Eddie: You are the child of Hades and the brother of Mal. I do not believe that for a second.
📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓
Random Ak: Aren't you embarrassed about dating Jace Badun?
Elle: Honestly I'm more embarrassed about being indirectly related to Harry.
Random Ak: Why—
Harry *walks in covered in pen ink and chicken feathers, not even acknowledging them*
Elle: See.
Jace *chokes on his drink from the corner of the room*
📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓
Jace *dividing all the OG B.D.A members up into pairs for an investigation* Harry, you're with Yzla. Reza, you're with Hermie. And Mystery is with me. Eddie you good to be alone?
Eddie: Yup.
Reza: Oh, come on. Why does Edmund get to go solo?
Jace: Eddie gets to go solo because he doesn't have a kill count or a track record of endangering himself for no reason.
Reza: That is factually incorrect!
Eddie *whispering when Jace's back is turned* It doesn't count if he doesn't find the bodies or medical records.
📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓
Harry: I'm not creepy.
Harry: I'm petty.
Harry: There's a difference, ya' know.
📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓
Jace: How much did you spend on this date?
Elle: $1400. But all of it's on credit cards, so it's like $5 a month for the next 2,000 years.
📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓
~~~Bonus: The Protégés~~~
📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓
Lada, writing in their diary with a glitter gel pen: I'm losing my sense of humanity. Nothing matters. God is dead. There's blood on my hands.
📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓
*Danny is ordering a cake over the phone*
Shop Employee: …and what would you like your cake to say?
Danny, covering the phone to look at The Squad: Do we want a talking cake?
📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓
Hadie: I can't take this anymore, someone needs to take me out!
Danny: In a dating type of way, or an assassination type of way?
Hadie: I don't know, surprise me!
📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓
Deja: My hands are cold.
Glauco: Here, let me hold them.
Deja: My lips are cold too.
Glauco *covers Deja's mouth with his hand*
📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓
Lazarus: Just a minute. I need to go take out the trash.
Everlee: Oh. We're going out?
Lazarus: What—
📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓
Samantha, at 18: Come to dinner tonight. I can’t cook, but I’ll bring plenty of free wine.
Panos, also 18: Marry me.
📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓
Paro: We’re getting married, bitches!
Zuri: And we're about to make it everybody else's problem.
📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓
Lada: I owe you one.
Avalon: That’s ok. You can just date me and we’ll call it even.
Lada: Are you flirting with me?
Avalon: Is that not obvious?
📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓
*Miriam is crying after a breakup*
Khalil : There there, Miriam .
Miriam , still crying: Thanks, but how did you get into my room?
Khalil : Great question—
📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓
Panos: I just had a long talk with Paro and Samantha about hitting and now they are yelling 'it’s my turn to perpetuate the cycle of violence' before hitting each other.
📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓
Samantha : Many people are mildly dehydrated and don’t realize it. You should drink at least six glasses of water per day.
Avalon: No, eight glasses!
Panos: I heard ten.
Paro: You need to drink at least five glasses of water per minute.
*later…*
Zuri: Okay, I just read through every study I could find to try to figure out whether low-grade dehydration is even a real thing.
Samantha : What did you learn?
Zuri: If you spend all day doing research and forget to eat or drink, you start to feel pretty bad.
Avalon: I’ll get some water.
Zuri: But how many glas–whoa, feeling dizzy.
Lada : Maybe you should just drink straight from the tap.
📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓📓
Misc. thoughts from eps 4-5 under cut, will post full review after i finish over the weekend
ger if you’re reading this i’m totally finishing my final <3
i’m so in love with the ravka parts of the show like the court politics are so well done
Other than the part with Nik’s mom calling him sobachka like that’s his derogatory nickname his brother calls him 🧍🏻‍♀️
On the topic of court politics I wish they hadn’t killed the king along with Vasily
We don’t get the scene where Nikolai threatens to try him for assaulting Genya, and when he exiles both his parents
And the crown just falls to Nikolai to default, he doesn’t have to fight for it in any way
DENYA DENYA DENYA
i’ve never said anything mean about sab ever
i love how they changed the “you’re steel” speech to be them alone and not in front of the others
their acting is so good they’re by far the most well done ship in the show
Nikolai
GIVING ALINA HIS COMPASS????? WHEN MALINA IS ALSO ASSOCIATED WITH COMPASS IMAGERY????? THEY ARE SO SICK
The entire chapel scene with those two made me go <33333
“HE LOVES YOU EVEN I CAN SEE IT” 😭
I might or might not be becoming a nikolina. stay tuned
favorite part of the episode was him getting progressively more disheveled and hot <3
Mal
I’M SO GLAD HE FINALLY FOUGHT WITH ALINA LIKE YES YOU CAN DO THINGS OTHER THAN JUST PASSIVELY SUPPORT HER
when he suddenly reappeared underground again alkfjdlafj what even was the point of vasily knocking him out
Zoya
Loveeeee how she got more mean. I do think the show tries too hard to make her like pop culture “sassy” instead of just mean and spiteful like let me girl live :(
her praying for liliyana at bhez ju felt weird, like i don’t think she would acknowledge her grief publicly. or maybe i’m just too much of a zoya stan
Alina
her martyr complex is going off. that’s all i got
Darkles
I can’t believe darkles is somehow the most book-faithful character in the season. love that for him
Crows
Oh my god don’t even get me started
The scene where Kaz confronted Pekka was so good if you just pretend it’s from a separate CK adaptation
Literally the way Kaz became Dirtyhands <3333333
amazing my favorite crows scene so far
kanej breakup???? that was just weird. kaz would never say those things.
also when he told inej before the plan “if this doesn’t work...get out of ketterdam” or whatever that was so ooc like a) kaz would never consider his plan failing and b) he would never admit his worry for inej so explicitly. like he’d just set up an escape route for her just in case and not say a thing about it to her. LIKE THE NET IN CK
ALSO WHY DID INEJ LET NINA REMOVE HER TATTOO
she doesn’t get to reclaim her trauma the same way she did in ck :((
i don’t wanna talk about wesper but decisions were certainly made
You had twins!!?
Tumblr media
“You know they are going to be a little bit mad at you, right? Especially Tobin” My wife, Alyssa Naeher, said to me once we sat inside the car. “She is going to forget about it, especially after we tell her that she is the godmother.”
Today is the day the team is meeting the baby, correct that, the babies. Right, we had twins. But that’s the thing, beside our parents, no one knew about them. When we first told the team and our friends, we thought there was only one baby, but when we went to find out the gender, the doctor surprised us, by telling us that we were having  a boy and a girl, two babies, Sophie and Lucas. We decided by then, to not tell anyone, except our parents.
This camp is going to be in Chicago, so we thought it was going to be the perfect opportunity for the team to meet our kids. And of course we know I couldn’t get away with the girls coming here and not meeting them, they would find a way. So we decided to meet up for lunch the day before camp starts, JJ offered her house to host the barbecue and the girls are bringing the drinks.
“Honestly babe, I don’t know how we were capable of hiding it from them, but I’m grateful that we are telling them today. I talked with JJ every day at practice and I can’t handle her anymore asking me when she is going to meet our son.”
“I know what you mean, Lys. I don’t see Tobs everyday like you do with JJ, but she is my best friend, it’s hard to hide things from her.”
“And how are we gonna do it? We will just get inside with both of them and say surprise?” Lys asked me “I have an idea”.
We finally arrive at JJ’s house, and it looks like everybody is there already. It 's time for the surprise!
I got Lucas in my arms and Alyssa stayed in the car with Sophie. I didn’t even have to ring the bell, before I got to the front door, it was already open and a bunch of women came in my direction.
“Y/n!!”  “Oh my god, this is Lucas!!” “He is so cute!!” The girls were so happy to see him, that I barely got a ‘Hi’ from them. They push me inside and put me on the sofa.
“Hi little boy, you’re so handsome. I can’t believe I’m just now meeting you. Your mom is a mean lady. Why did you did this? He is already a month old.” Tobin said seating by my side. “Hi for you too Tobs, I also miss you” “Oh shut up, you know I miss you too. But I have never met him before.” “You wanna hold him?” “Of course!”
I put Lucas in Tobin’s arms and I could see how much love she already has for him.
“Hey, that’s not far! I live here, I should be the one to hold him first!” JJ said, sitting beside Tobin. “That’s bullshit, If it wasn’t for me this little guy wasn’t even going to exist. I was the one who introduced them to each other” Tobin fought back. “But I was the one who helped Alyssa with the proposal.” Yeah, I had to put an end to it. “Julie! Tobin! Stop with it, you’re both equally important for our lives.”  “Oh Y/n, we love you and Lys too. But now we love your kid even more.” Julie said with a grin on her face. “Good to hear how I was easily substituted.”
“Get used to it Y/n, it has been this way with me since I had Charlie.” Alex said to me with a simpaty look. “And where is she by the way?” “Mal and Rose have her outside.”
With that I saw Lys getting inside the house with Sophie in her arms. But as all eyes are on Lucas so no one saw her. She says. “Oh, I see how things work now, I could have been kidnapped outside and no one would have noticed. Hi to everyone by the way”. Everyone said “Hi” in unisound, but no one actually looked her way. “Oh I see how it is now, if no one is going to even look at me I'm gonna get this little girl and head home with her then.”
No one paid much attention to her, except for Sonnett who slightly turned to look her way. But when she saw Sophie in Lyns’s arms she yelled.
“Oh my god! Who is that baby?” With that everyone looked at Lyns. “Oh, it is good to have your attention. Everyone, I think it is time for you to meet Sophie, our daughter. Lucas’s twin.” “What? You had twins?” And with that the questions start all over again. It was quite funny until Tobin yells.
“Everyone shut up. They are babies, you’re gonna wake them up. And I’m not ready to give him away yet.” “Chill out Tobs, you can hold him a little bit more. And you will have all the time to spoil him, especially since you’re his godmother.” “I wouldn’t give him to you either… Wait, you said godmother? I’m his godmother?” “Well if you like to, of course.” “Did you hear that little guy? I’m your godmother. I'm gonna teach you all about soccer. And you are going to be the one to save the USMNT or if you don’t like soccer I can teach you how to paint or skate, I’ll support you in everything”
Alyssa took that moment and used it to inform the other godmother as well. “Well, since Lucas is already in his godmother's arms. Julie, do you want to hold your goddaughter as well?” “Oh my god, really?” “Yeah.” “Pass her to me. Hi little girl, you’re so cute, and I’ll love you so much! I already do, even though I just found out you exist. But I’ll teach so much, and you’re gonna be the most badass and strong woman we know.” “I think that means you both accept being their godmother’s?” “Of course, I was a little bit hurt you asked Tobin and didn’t ask me, but now you are forgiven.” “Good to know.”
“Okay, okay.” Pinoe interrupted us. “But now me, as one of the people who haven’t been bribed with any title... How do you keep from us that you were having twins?”
Bering and Wells Reunion Panel Transcription (4/17/2021)
This is from the ClexaCon Virtual panel with Joanne Kelly and Jaime Murray, with Dana Piccoli as moderator and Mark as ASL interpreter. I spent around six hours on this and there were really only a couple of brief bits I couldn’t make out - I tried to make this as thorough as possible even though the audio quality was iffy at points and there was a lot of overlapping talking. I also included all of the ums and uhs in the interest of thoroughness so sorry if that gets annoying. Let me know if I’ve gotten any screen names wrong.
Content notes: brief discussion of on-set injury, allusions to homophobia from higher-ups, discussions of hostile workplace experiences due to gender, brief discussion of the ovarian cancer subplot, Jo misgenders Mark once and then corrects herself.
Dana: And I think we are live! Hey everyone, welcome, welcome, this is day 2 of ClexaCon Virtual. So glad to be here with you for our Warehouse 13 Bering and Wells panel. What a great video! I believe that was Mal that made that. Fantastic work! [They showed a fanvid prior to the panel on the stream.] Uh, I want to take a second to introduce Mark, our ASL interpreter. Thank you so much for being here, Mark. Well, I know that the Bering and Wells fandom is still going strong and, um, I’m so excited to be able to present this panel to you today, so without further ado, let’s get started. It’s been seven years since we last embarked on the wonderfully quirky world of Warehouse 13 and we’re thrilled to have not one, but two of the show’s stars here with us, Bering and Wells in the flesh, please welcome Joanne and Jaime!
Jo: [laughs] Hi!
Jaime: Hi guys!
Dana: Hi!
Jaime: Oh my goodness, I was tearing up watching that, that was just...
Dana: It’s so good, right?
Jaime: And Mal made it, of course, I mean just, the fandom is so amazing, that we have a fan who made that amazing movie, and I’m sitting here... were you tearing up, Jo?
Jo: Yeah... [laughs]
Dana: She’s like, I can’t talk right now!
Jaime: Aww.
Jo: Yeah, it’s, you know, it’s like, it’s like a, a wormhole, it’s like going in a wormhole, really, to see that put together in that way, and just, that somebody did that is, um, crazy, wonderful.
Jaime: Yeah.
Dana: When, when we are in person in, uh, in, in Las Vegas, I’m often backstage with the actors as they see these videos maybe f- for the first time, and your reaction is the reaction that everyone has. They all get teary, they all just like hold onto each other, it’s, it’s really sweet and wonderful.
Jaime: Oh my gosh, I, I wish I could go back in time and like, we film more of it and, and enjoy it more, because sometimes when you’re in it, you’re just going so fast and, you know, you don't even realize the meaning of, of, of what you’ve created until you see it through the eyes of the fans and what it meant to them, and then I, I wish I could lean into it more. [laughs]
Dana: Well, we’re certainly gonna get into that. [laughs]
Jaime: [laughs]
Dana: Alright, well, let’s kick things off! Uh, as of a we- a week ago, I was prepping to interview Jaime, and then suddenly the heavens opened up, and what was one became two. [they laugh] Joanne joined the party! How did this crazy kismet even happen?
Jo: I’m trying this new thing where I say yes. [laughs]
Jaime: [laughs] Well done!
Jo: Thanks. [laughs] Um, it’s a new thing I’m trying. Um, Jaime texted me and she’s like, I'm doing this thing, we had talked about it, I think the last panel we did at Dragon*Con maybe?
Jaime: Yeah.
Dana: 2018.
Jo: And she had told me about ClexaCon and I was like, that, because I really enjoyed that panel that we did, it felt, you know, I think one of the reasons, and I think that the work between us is, and I look at it now and I’m so touched because I, and I also just think the world of Jaime as an actor, I think she’s brilliant and her choices are so clean and-
Jaime: Ditto.
Jo: -full heart forward, like I, I’ve always been a fan of what she bought, and just personally on set I was in a, it was a very male environment, and Jaime came and I was like, oh my god, like, someone to talk to, someone who cared, and she took care of me, like she really - so I just, I don’t know, when she reached out I was like, of course, yes, yes.
Dana: Like it’s in two days, sure! Let’s, let’s go!
Jaime: We missed each other as well. It was also an opportunity to hang out, like, we missed each other!
Jo: Yeah.
Jaime: We had this flurry of texts of like, checking in with each other, and what-
Jo: What have you been watching? what are you doing?
Jaime: Yeah.
Jo: Where are you?
Jaime: Yeah, so.
Dana: Oh, that’s amazing! So you’ve maintained this really wonderful friendship since, since the end of the show.
Jo: Yeah, I mean, actors are nomads and we’re very sort of, I feel, Jaime, I don’t know if you feel the same way, but it’s like those friends that you have that you don’t see forever, but when you see them you fall back into a rhythm automatically, there’s never, it doesn’t feel push or pulled, it’s just, it’s just nice.
Jaime: I, I think also for us, um, I think there’s a sisterhood as well, you know, I think that, you know, Jo just touched on it. You know, often in a cast there’s, um, it’s changing and it’s evolving all the time, and this was seven years ago, and it was seven years before that, it started, so like fourteen years ago-
Jo: Oh my god. [laughs]
Jaime: But there’s, ninety nine point five percent of the people behind the camera are men, the majority of the parts are often men, or it’s, it’s male and women, but the men have the more heroic bits and the funnier lines and you’re kind of struggling with that and you’re glad to be working so you’re kind of making good and making it okay, but you’re kind of like, you know, getting feels, and, you know, as, as Joanne said, it, you know, you’re laughing at dick jokes when you don’t find them particularly funny- [all laugh]
Jo: Like wow! Oh! [sarcastic thumbs up]
Jaime: And so when I came in, I saw Jo - I had been on shows, like I was on a show called Hustle, I was the only girl in the cast, and then everybody, uh, behind the camera was, um, all men. Um, on Warehouse we had one female writer on some episodes, um, we never had a fe- uh, um, a female director on anything or a producer-
Jo: No we had, we had Tawn- [presumably about to mention Tawnia McKiernan] we had two fem- we had a few, but we were-
Jaime: No- no- not on my, not on my episodes.
Jo: Oh, on yours.
Jaime: But it was just like, I came in and I saw Jo and I understood, and I knew what her experience was, and so there was this kind of kinhood, this sisterhood, and I think it, it’s not a male-female thing, but it’s, it’s a minority and majority thing. When you’re in a minority and the majority is doing something, you either have to get down with the program and go with that flow, or you get kind of fe- you feel like you’re difficult or annoying to everybody. And I kind of came in and I just was like, oh like, I get it, it’s hard, and I’m gonna give this woman, like, my, my energy and my love and, so it was-
Dana: So you were like I- you looked at Joanne and you were like, that is someone I can smash the patriarchy with!
Jaime: [laughs] Yes.
Dana: Let’s do it!
Jo: No, I read a lot of books [laughs] when we weren’t filming. I would like get on my chair and just be like this. [mimes holding book in front of face]
Jaime: Yes!
Jo: [laughs] Like I’m doing this now, I’ll see you guys when we’re rolling again, you know, it was really- and, but also, you know, it’s so, and it is changing, it’s changing and evolving in a really, um, at a wonderful rate, but also I would get so excited to be in a scene with another woman that wasn’t about a man, you know, or that we weren’t- uh, it was just so nice to have girl-girl scenes. That never happens, it hardly ever happens. Like, the majority of scenes that you do are about love or acrimony with men, um, and it’s so nice to have a relationship with a woman that’s, um, sort of reflective of how relationships with women actually are. Um, I’ve been, I shifted into writing because of frustration with just not reading stories that I felt were reflective of our, my experience as a woman, you know, that sort of, um, and I think that Bering and Wells sort of in, I mean, that’s when that ship turned for me, as well.
Dana: Well ho- hold that thought, we are, we are going there!
Jaime: And, and also because it wasn’t, it actually wasn’t written. Um, there was, in a way we were able to steer that ship, and then we’d already kind of given a road map for the way this energy was, so it wasn’t written in the conventional way. Like, even like, when a, when a, when a, when a woman will have a love interest it’s, it’s often written by men and it’s o- often in a conventional kind of way, whereas our relationship, at a time before people were even kind of, uh, exploring this that much, um, now, now much more, thank god, it’s more, more inclusive. But it was more kind of, um, uh, complicated than, than maybe would’ve been written about, so it was given more nuance, yeah.
Jo: You mean like, do you mean like actual relationships? [laughs]
Jaime: You what? Say that again?
Jo: Like actual relationships! [laughs]
Jaime: Yeah, yeah, yeah. [laughs]
Jo: You know, that don’t come in and you have a “where they start and where they finish,” like that we, oh, we know where they’re gonna end up so we’ll just gonna-
Dana: Right, right.
Jo: -move them around like chess pieces. It was actually an energy that Jaime and I created, and the story sort of evolved from that energy as - it was inside out as opposed to outside in, which I think made it a real relationship.
Dana: Well, so my friend Dorthy Snarker, she once said that HG and Myka’s storyline has been main text pretending to be subtext, which feels really apt to me.
Jaime: Yeah!
Dana: So at what point-
Jo: Very smart.
Dana: What point in the show did it really click with the two of you that this connection that HG and Myka shared was something much deeper?
Jo: Jaime just had, Jaime, you just explained this very coolly in, in, um-
Jaime: One of our chats.
Jo: Yeah, yeah. Why don’t you speak to this, why don’t you take this?
Jaime: Well, well, first of all like I said, there was like kind of this sisterhood when I came in and, um, Jo, uh, Jo wasn’t like, like it wasn’t like I came in and she was like hey let’s be friends. I came in and she was behind a book, and she wasn’t particularly accessible, and she wasn’t, like, she was a bit grumpy, you know. And so I was like, my personality type is like, how do I crack this nut? [laughs] How do I make this woman love me? [laughs] This is the most unaccessible woman-
Dana: That explai- Jaime that explains a lot! [laughs]
Jaime: This is the most unaccessible women on the set, the mo- the most unaccessible human to me. How do I make her fall in love with me? So it’s like partly my narcissism-
Jo: [laughs] Jaime Murray in a nutshell, everyone!
Jaime: -and my ego, um, so I was kind of winning her over off set, and then, you know, as she was opening up to me and, you know, she was kind of telling me about some of the challenges she was coming up against, I was like, yeah, that’s, that’s not fair, and yeah, I completely get that, you know. So we were kind of like having that kind of journey, I’m like, like, I’m like, oh no, you’re not crazy, everyone else is crazy! Like, let’s smash the patriarchy!
Jo: [laughs]
Jaime: And then, and then unfortunately, um, Jo hurt herself really badly doing a stunt, and, um, you know, there’s no time to hurt yourself on a film set, and there’s no time to take time and, and kind of heal your back or anything like that. So she was taking some pretty strong painkillers and she was working through it, and I had spinal surgery, I, I know what back pain is like, it’s, it’s the worst. I mean, it’s literally everything, you know, you feel like an old person. And so I was, um, taking care of her as best as I could, and we had the scene, and it was the scene in the street where, I, I think it's the first scene that, where I get the grappler out-
Dana: Oh, the grappler.
Jaime: And I shoot it into the air and I put my arm around her and we shoot up-
Dana: We’re very familiar with this scene. [laughs]
Jo: [doing grappler motion] [laughs]
Jaime: Yeah, so, so it’s like, it had like, physicality, and also it was a really, um, we always laugh that Toronto has about five seasons in one day, so you’ll like start shooting the scene and then suddenly there’s a, like a snowstorm! Bright sunshine!
Jo: Then it’s sunny! Then rain!
Jaime: Torrential rain, wind - and it was one of those, and we had to move to a new location, we were really behind in the day, and she had this one pice of hair that kept on like blowing in her face-
Dana: Oh, I know where this is going, Jaime. [laughs]
Jaime: And she was, the thing was, she was like, also these painkillers-
Jo: I was like, I can’t even see with the hair, I was like, I was hopped up on so many painkillers...
Jaime: Yeah, she was hopped up, she was like, I can’t even get my hair out of the way!
Jo: I think I actually called that day, it was the only time where I was like, guys I can’t work anymore, like, I literally, the doctor was like, you need to rest and I’m like I can’t. And the first AD came over to me and he was like, you’re gonna have to say stop, because nobody is gonna stop the filming, and I didn't wanna do that because you don't want to be the person that, that loses the day.
Jaime: That’s part of it, isn’t it? You’re, you can’t be, you can’t have any vulnerability or be a woman in any way, any shape or form on a film set. [laughs]
Jo: Yeah.
Jaime: So I knew in the morning, and so I’d been like trying to take care of her and had, had like this experience of having spinal surgery, so I was like caretaking as much, as best as I could. I’m a Cancerian as well, so it’s in my nature.
Dana: Sure.
Jaime: And, um, and we‘re in this scene and we’d had to kind of cut so many times, and this hair just kind of-
Jo: [laughs]
Jaime: -came over her face like this, and I just lent forward and on my line I just moved the hair out of her, um, face and put it back, and there was this, this look of genuine-
Jo: [laughs]
Jaime: -surprise and shock in her face because we hadn’t rehearsed it and, and, and you know, we rehearse everything, and then, and then Joanne, what did you say that you-
Jo: I said I had this feeling, you know, when she did that I was like, oooh, um, what’s happening? [laughs]
Dana: [laughs]
Jaime: What are these feelings I’m having?
Jo: I did not expect all these feelings.
Jaime: Someone is being nice to me in this hostile world!
Jo: I was like this is so, it was like, pink light came up and there was glitter all of a sudden, and a unicorn in the back and, um-
Dana: Yep.
Jaime: They were really good drugs, you can’t, they’re illegal now, you can’t get them now cause they’re illegal now, but-
Jo: [laughs] No, no! But that point I’d say that the storyline really developed from inside out, you know outside, it was actually something, she did something that made me respond in a certain way, and as an actor you have those openings and you can choose to go, you either close them, like if, if I don’t like an actor [laughs] and someone does something, I might go like, no, I don’t wanna gonna go with that- [laughs]
Jaime: Yeah.
Jo: -and change the track, but because I love Jaime and, and that happened, I sort of just was like I’m gonna go with this energy and see where it leads. And so it was a very organic, and it took me completely, and I had not expected it, it took me completely- but I liked it, so I started, then that...
Dana: So you are the reason, you two are the captains of the Bering and Wells ship. You made that happen!
Jaime: Yeah.
Jo: Yeah.
Jaime: But also I felt like HG, you know, she came from an era when the suffragette movement was, um, happening, and she was active in that, however, she had to write under her brother’s name, um-
Dana: Yeah.
Jaime: And as a woman, you know, she couldn’t be even open about her brilliance and she had to let her dimwitted brother take credit for it, and then she was frozen. So she was an activist before her time and suddenly she’s waking up in a world where there’s this dynamic woman, gun-toating woman kind of using her wits and brainpower and like, god bless Pete [laughs] but he was a little bit, like, she was the brains and the brilliance, and often he would be kind of like, you know, taking the credit for it or like having the girls flirt with him, and I just felt like if I grow up, if I woke up from, you know, a dream of, of being a suffragette and I woke up and I saw Myka, surely I would be more fascinated-
Jo: [laughs]
Jaime: -by this woman who is everything that I had ever wished to be, so I started playing off this fascina- I was fascinated by her. Pete was just as stupid as my brother. [laughs]
Jo: And I do have to say, I do have to give the showrunner Jack Kenny credit here too, because Jack really let us run with it and started to lean into it, and the writers were all very accepting, so it was, and, and Jack particularly, you know, we had a lot, we had our creative differences, but he was really generous in this storyline with us, like I think, he gave us a lot of rope to play with-
Jaime: Yeah.
Jo: And it was interesting rope, because they never-
Dana: It was attached to a grappling hook is what it was!
Jo: Yeah, and they never, like what i really loved about it is the never like put it on the nose it was always very elliptical, we always had room to breathe, um-
Jaime: Well partly I don’t, I think that it was, it was, it’s funny to talk about it now because it doesn't seem that long a- long ago, but it-
Jo: But it was so long ago...
Jaime: -it was unusual-
Jo: For that.
Jaime: -for the genre and for the audience that we were going for to, to actually go there, um,
Dana: Yeah. Seven years ago, you’re absolutely right. Things have changed tremendously, and especially in the last five years.
Jo: Yeah, yeah.
Jaime: And, but I think that Jack and Drew, they were kind of excited about what we were doing, but actually, you know, we weren't sure what the network would say or what the advertisers might think, and so, um, you know, I’m really proud of the work that we were able to, to say-
Jo: Yeah.
Jaime: You know, being the first in some ways.
Jo: It’s interesting, you know, like Jaime texted me, she sent me this video and I was looking at it and I was just so proud-
Jaime: I sent you Mal’s video, I sent you one of Mal’s other videos.
Jo: She’s wonderful, so like shoutout to her!
Jaime: Yeah
Jo: That’s, yeah, it was gorgeous, and I was really proud of the work, you know, after, it’s, you create these things in a bubble and, I haven’t se- I haven’t seen Warehouse, I never watched it. [laughs] so I’m always very surprised to see these videos, it feels like I’m cracking open-
Jaime: And I want to say as well, you know, when we say we haven’t down and watched all the shows, or you know, in some peoples’ cases, many of the shows, you know, it’s, it’s not because we don’t love the show and we don't love the work that everyone else has done, done, it’s actually a lot of actors don't watch, um, their own work. It’s, if, if you’ve ever heard your own voice on an answer phone or something and you're like, who’s that? Oh my god, that’s me!
Dana: [laughs]
Jaime: Like, so when you see yourself on TV or screen it’s like that on crack, it’s absolutely terrifying, and, and you’re like oh my god, like behind a pillow, like-
Jo: Filled with self loathing and despair. [laughs]
Jaime: Yes.
Dana: That’s okay.
Jaime: Which is a work in progress, I’m trying to deal with that now.
Dana: Well, when, at what point did you realize that queer people were actually starting to flock to the show to support this direction with these characters?
Jaime: We, we didn't know, we didn’t know-
Dana: No?
Jaime: Well, we, um, I, um, Jo’s not on social media so I don’t know when she knew, other than maybe when I told her. I saw replies on twitter-
Jo: Comic Con.
Dana: Somebody didn’t like hire a plane and like, around the area with like, a Bering and Wells forever…?
Jo: I, I remember, I remember going to Comic Con, for me because that’s’ when I had the fan interaction, um, because I wasn’t on Twitter-
Jaime: Yeah, there were fans that told us.
Jo: And, and, uh, a lot of the women, I remember being asked some very specific questions during panels, and, you know, there's a lot of guys who like to talk at those panel so I didn’t get to talk a lot but I made it quite, I, I made it quite clear about how important that storyline was to me and it, it, I realized very quickly that it was important to a lot more women than me. I didn’t really realize, too, that storytelling wasn’t represented in that way, at that point, you know. I didn’t feel that. I didn’t feel like that was a groundbreaking choice, to choose to be attracted to a woman in a scene to me is life, it’s how I live my life, I, I’m you know, I don’t have those, I’m not in a box [laughs] and it so when I realized, it was a eye-opening moment. I’m like, I’m like, wait, wait, this is, this is something new that’s not being done?
Dana: You guys were kind of on, you were like right here [miming going up a hill or mountain] and then shortly after Warehouse, it started going like [woosh noise of going down the other side of the hill] and this wave of representation started happening.
Jaime: Well, ev- even in Warehouse, there was an openly gay character in, in Warehouse.
Dana: Right, yes!
Jo: Yeah, yeah, there was Aaron.
Jaime: But it’s been, it’s been incredibly, um, powerful for, for, for, for me, um, you know, I I, think that a lot of people, some people are like oh my god, you know, I wish I could go back to my childhood or my teenage years, I, you could not pay me anything for, I would not go back to my teenage years for love or money. It was, it was a incredibly painful time for me, um, and not a particularly happy time for me, and, um, you know, just awkwardness, you know, all the stuff that, you know, all the stuff people feel in their teens, all the bad stuff I felt in my teens, so when I’ve spoken to people at conventions, um, and they've’ spoken to me about, um, Warehouse having, and our relationship in Warehouse having a positive effect for them in their teen, in their painful teenage years, it’s, it, it, it can bring me to tears, because i- if I could have imagined having kind of that, some kind of impact when I’d been a teenager maybe I wouldn't have been so miserable, but, um, I’m really humbled by it. it’s really lovely.
Dana: Yeah, you, you most certainly have had a tremendous impact on a lot of peoples’ lives and I’m so glad that you are able to take that and keep it in your heart.
Jaime: Yeah.
Dana: Speaking of this kind of sea change of the last few years, do you think that if Warehouse had been airing now that things might have ended differently? Do you think that maybe that subtext really would have been pulled much more into main text?
Jaime: You’d know better, Jo.
Jo: I...don’t know the answer to that question, um, perhaps, actually, absolutely! It’s twenty twenty-
Jaime: If we were writing it, maybe.
Jo: I mean, that’s what I’m trying to do. [laughs] Um, yeah, I think so. Maybe we would have been able to lean more into that storyline, um-
Jaime: Maybe we would’ve had a, be a stronger voice in shaping the narrative there.
Jo: It, yeah, I mean, Jack was, Jack was great about it, but it, it was a different, it was a different era. I think now is, is really a beautiful time for storytelling in the sense that it is really becoming so much more inclusive and we have representation, which, I mean, seeing ourselves represented in stories is how we understand ourselves in the world, and that’s, it’s so important, you know, it’s so important where we’re going, um, and I wish there could have been more of that in Warehouse, but I’m glad there was what there was.
Dana: Yeah.
Jaime: I, I, I also think that, um, you know, it’s changed so much in just such a short space of time, but particularly in the last couple of years, like, women were always, um, portrayed like, like, women always had to be perfect and kind of cute, and, you know, there had to be kind of something attractive or charming about them at all times, you know, and so we always had to put a bow on a woman to make her acceptable. And one of the things that I’m really loving is, you know, that women can be flawed and they can still, you can still love them and, you know, one of the things that always stun- stunned me is that I’ve been so welcomed into a community of kind, inclusive, um, you know, powerful activist, um, women, uh, um, and I’m like, why do these amazing women even like my characters when I’ve played such, um, a bad character, and it’s like-
Dana: But, but we love that! Queer women love a villain!
Jaime: Well, it’s like, flawed characters, and it’s like, and then recently I watched this show called, um, I hate Suzie Pickles [actual title of show: I Hate Suzie], um, there’s a show called, um, uh, I May Destroy You. They’re British shows, actually, both are.
Dana: Oh, yeah, it’s so good.
Jaime: And they, these are complex, um, women who make bad choices, and they self sabotage and they do things that are kind of frowned upon in society, and yet I love them, these women, and it’s like, if I can love these women for all their flaws, then maybe I'm okay too. And I think that we, we have to allow women to be flawed and lovable instead of just being cute little heroines that kind of support men at all times. I mean, it’s changed so much, that’s kind of, like the old, the old order of what it used to be, like, but yeah, it’s exciting.
Dana: That happe- That was what was written in my yearbook! Just, Dana Piccoli, flawed but lovable.
Jaime: Ah! [laughs]
Dana: So I totally, I totally can appreciate that.
Jaime: Was it that? Was it- that would be the best!
Dana: [laughs] I love that.
Jaime: Flawed and lovable, not but.
Dana: Oh yeah, yes, flawed and lovable, sorry, sorry. That’s, that’s what, that’s where I went wrong in the yearbook.
Jaime: Exactly.
Dana: Uh, J- Jaime. A lot has been made of this, the apples scene.
Jaime: Yes.
Dana: Do you think I smell apples is basically saying “I love you”? Were you, what do you think that Helena was trying to express at that time?
Jaime: I, I, I think that it was, um, a sense of, uh, acceptance, and, um, and, and, and, and, and love, I mean, uh, because Helena had always been such a, kind of a troubled character in so many ways and she had kind of, um, these struggles and this darkness and these mental health issues and I think that “I smell apples” was a, a, a wa- wa- was, she, she’d kind of come to the light, you know, she, she had, had kind of accepted herself, and it was such an altruistic act of love, she was sacrificing herself in order to save the others, that it was true love, like she’d overcome the darkness. So it was, uh, I, I, I, I, love that, uh, moment, yeah, that kind of-
Jo: I know we wanted, uh, one of the most beautiful definitions of love onscreen is recognition of your soul in someone else.
Dana: Mhmm.
Jo: That’s really what happens, and I thought that when Jaime did that, there was a very beautiful, I mean it’s sort of like Romeo and Juliet. You see this moment of, and we talked about it earlier, that energy, that to me is that. what that is-
Jaime: Yes.
Jo: -the scene is, “I smell apples.” It’s these two people who see each other in each other and are profoundly connected, whether, in whatever way that it is, it’s just a profound connection, you know, and so often we find boxes to put these connections in, you know, as humans, we want to make sense, we want to make logic of them, you know, which is, I think, um, why storytelling suffers in the representation, because you want to define what a thing is and kind of, um, the most beautiful things about some of the most special relationships is they, they're beyond what you can say they are, they’re beyond categorization, they are, you know...
Jaime: I, I, I definitely think that, although it wasn’t written in that way, I mean, if you actually go back and look at the footage, I’m saying “I love you” to, uh, uh, HG is saying “I love you” to Myka and Myka is is let-
Jo: I only think that’s what she was saying.
Jaime: -letting, letting it land.
Dana: Confirmation, folks! Confirmation, um, everyone!
Jo: In here. [points to head]
Dana: Write it in your vows, write it now in your vows!
Jo: Dana, you’re funny! [laughs]
Dana: Thank you!
Jaime: But wh- when, when did I come back and I was like, married to, what-
Dana: You, you weren't married, you were with a gentleman, and he had a, a young child and-
Jaime: And he was a bit of a drip as well!
Jo: And the house was very suburban, that’s all I remember was, I like walked into this house and I was like-
Jaime: That was, was that, I don’t really know the chronological, um, ordering, but like, I had like a ponytail, and I had a, possibly-
Jo: You were probably like driving a minivan.
Dana: You were teaching, you were teaching, weren’t you?
Jaime: Cause wasn’t I [indecipherable]
Jo: It’s okay, Jaime, I [indecipherable]
Dana: You were like in Phoenix or something.
Jaime: Yeah so, so what was that, after a bit I, so like “I smell apples” was the ending of my character, right? So like that, was that after a bit-
Dana: Right, and then you got rev- you were brought back-
Jaime: Right.
Dana: And then you kind of disappeared for a bit.
Jaime: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Dana: Yes. Yeah, um-
Jaime: Yeah.
Dana: The, um, the, the, uh, the fans [laughs] were, um, confused by that, were like what?
Jaime: I d- I’m confused, I’m confused! [laughs]
Jo: Not just the fans, not just the fans.
Jaime: Well, I actually, um, I, I, I really want to go back and see that scene, um, I, I feel like you came to, I don’t, I was living in like suburbia-
Dana: Mhm.
Jaime: And, and didn’t you come to-
Jo: I don't remember.
Jaime: -the house and I, I think you came to-
Jo: I remember that horrible house though, because it was like, it… [makes disgusted face]
Jaime: It was so weird and I was like hello, I’m kind of like a completely different woman!
Jo: It was like very Stepford, I like, I walked in and, I don’t know why Myka was so accepting, I would’ve taken a baseball bat to the house, gonna be like, we’re leaving!
Jaime: So, so, so, so, I, so I, Jack, so Jack, Jack-
Jo: Get out of here, you drank the Kool Aid!
Jaime: I remember Jack was there and I was like, um, uh, oh, like this, like, like this doesn't work because of this and this doesn’t work because of that, and I was having a little, kind of like a creative difference with him, and, and he left for the day, he left for the day, and I really want to go back and see that s- that, that scene, because I remember I was asking him if I could, yeah, I know it’s, it says this but could I play it like this? And I do- I remember he didn’t want me to for the storyline, but I remember he left. [laughs] So I’d love to go back and see, I, I remember think- feeling like I was quite naughty, that I actually got away with it, but, uh-
Dana: Oh, I am loving all the subversive shit that was happening behind the scenes. [laughs]
Jaime: Yeah. [laughs]
Jo: Do you remember the park bench as well? Remember that scene, it was-
Jaime: Oh, yeah, a bench.
Jo: Wasn’t that a bench?
Jaime: Oh, that was a love scene, that was a love scene.
Jo: That was a, yeah, we really went for that one. [all laugh]
Jo: Everyone was like, what? And I’m like, well, we’re doing it. Might as well!
Jaime: [laughs] And we’re in like, Toronto, and everyone behind the camera, like, they’re very blokey, and it’s not in the script, and then they're like, “oh I didn’t, they’re, they’re, oh I didn’t see that coming!” [laughs]
Jo: They were like, what are you guys doing? We’re like, we’ll figure it out! [laughing]
Jaime: Exactly! We’re just doing our own thing. [laughs]
Dana: Oh, a little, a little mutiny, a little bit! [laughs] Well we, we, we’ve ha- we’ve had such incredible conversation so far, and I have so many fan questions for you, and if we were onstage everyone would get to come up to the mic-
Jaime: Aw.
Dana: -and ask you questions, but I do have a bunch of questions that were sent in, um, so I do want to get to your fans, because your fans are so integral to keeping this like-
Jo: That’s why we’re here.
Dana: -story alive. Uh, let’s see here. Let’s kick it off. Alright, so wellsbering wants to know, what personality traits do you share with your characters?
Jaime: Well I think, I think that, um, I, uh, definitely always get cast as the baddie for whatever reason, but then I think that, um, really the quirky mess that I, I, I morphed into is basically me. [all laugh]
Jo: I like that answer, that’s great. Um, I, uh, am very A-type when it comes to certain things, and Myka very much, I’m very like, flowy, Myka wa- didn’t flow, but there are certain parts of my life where I’m not flowy around. My work is one of them, writing is another one. Um, and I’m very afraid of letting people down. I think that’s why I've been, I was te- telling a lot of the people that I was talking to today that, you know, the reason I didn’t do this a lot when the show was on, I couldn’t understa- i was like, why do people wanna meet me? They're gonna meet me and be disappointed.
Dana: Ohhhh.
Jo: Yeah.
Dana: I think everyone thinks that though, I think that’s very common.
Jo: I think tha- yeah, I think that’s the human condition, right?
Dana: Yes.
Jo: Um, but, but I think Myka and I share that sort of reserve, you know, that thing where you’re like I don’t, no, don’t get too close. I’m like a Monet, stay back. [laughs]
Jaime: And I, I think that was part of the chemistry as well, it’s like, you have that kind of like, you know, protectio- protective-
Jo: Yeah.
Jaime: -kind of like, edge. And so it’s like, if, I think that i- in a way, the gift that we had by it not being written for us is, if had been written we would’ve, the characters would’ve made each other, um, accessible to each other far too quickly. It was like the slow burn of, Myka could be quite prickly, and my character was completely messed up so it was kind of like, this kind of like energy between them where they were kind of like, you know, like working each other out, feeling each other out-
Jo: Is there? Is there an energy there?
Jaime: And then the laughs were well earned, and the smiles, and the deciding to work together was well earned. There was a, a lot of suspicion around each other, and when they opened up or they kind of let their guard down, it was hard earned, and and it was like, you know, something you would wanna rejoice at.
Jo: Yeah, aw, I love that.
Dana: Um, okay, so this is from mayberrycosplay, uh, you may remember mayberrycosplay, I believe one of them dressed as HG at a con, uh-
Jaime: Oh!
Dana: -but they wondered-
Jaime: I’ve seen a few HGs.
Dana: You’ve seen a few HGs.
Jaime: [laughs]
Dana: This is for Jo about, uh, Myka’s experience with ovarian cancer and, uh, like, how the awareness of this silent killer of women, like how that storyline, what that storyline meant to you and how it felt to portray that?
Jo: I was really nervous about that storyline, you know, anything that has affected people and their families and, and it’s always, I, you know, difficult territory to walk as an actor, especially in a show like Warehouse where there's so much happening on such a grand level that I’m like, are they going to pay attention to this? Are they going to really honor a storyline like this? was my concern, you know, like very often things like that are added like, uh, it’s like putting a robot arm on a story, and you're like oh, and by the way, there’s ovarian cancer! And so I was really, you know, concerned about showing up for that and, and, and and serving it in a way that people understood and, and could identify with that, you know, it’s such a catharsis, that’s what I think it’s supposed to be. Um, so it was, uh, I, the fans told me I pulled it off, that’s the only way that I know.
Dana: Well it meant a tremendous amount to, to mayberrycosplay and so that’s why they, they sent that in because it, it really affected them because of their own personal-
Jo: Yeah.
Dana: -you know, family journeys and such.
Jo: Well I’m so, so, thank you, I mean, I’m still wondering, you know, I worked really hard to make sure that was in there. We’ve all lost somebody to cancer, we all know what that’s like, we all know- I mean, I mean, I certainly have, to feel a lump and be like [does the Home Alone face] you know. I have two friends right now who are going through it, so I try to honor it in the best way. I- it’s one of the things that makes me want to be an actor, uh, that I think is so special about it is that you get to tell stories that people, it’s a group catharsis, you know, so I’m glad that, glad they think I, the only thing that, if they think I sh- I showed up then... [laughs] yes, good, good, good.
Dana: Um, let’s see here, cloxy813 wants to know what was your favorite, favorite scene to film together?
Jo: Probably the heaving bosoms scene. I was excited for the heaving bosoms scene, which was all like [mimes placing gun to forehead] kill me!
Jaime: [laughs]
Dana: Hashtag heaving bosoms scene.
Jo: It was so hot that day, I remember my tank top-
Jaime: So hot, oh my god, it was like-
Jo: It was like, my tank top, I would like look down and find, I was like, my boobs are out, um. [laughs] I just saw him sign, them sign, um.
Jaime: We were by that lake, I just wanted to dive in there. It was-
Jo: Yeah, yeah, yeah, but I loved, I loved, I loved doing that scene, I have to say. And, and the chess scene, I remember that.
Jaime: Oh yeah.
Jo: I remember that very well. Um, I really enjoyed my work with Jaime because I, as I said, you know, there’s not a lot of scenes that are two women just being women. It was so, it was like a breath of fresh air and so I, I wasn't, I was, uh, you know, a lot of the times Myka was there to witness Pete-
Jaime: Or, or, or to laugh, or to kind of laugh and sigh at his super funny jokes.
Jo: The funny jokes... um, so, so it was so nice to not ha- be in a scene from that point of view. So often women are are written as accessories-
Jaime: Yeah.
Jo: You know, and, and this was a storyline where I felt like she was a whole person and I could be like a whole, real person, I didn't have to be like-
Jaime: I, I, I, I, I was on a show called Hustle and there was a character on it called Danny Blue, and he had all the funny lines, and one of the refrains that I had was “oh Danny. Oh Danny,” where every time he said something cheeky or naughty or a joke I’d go “oh Danny,” and I remember just being so excited to get the job, but then after awhile like me saying “oh Danny” really wore thin, especially as off camera I feel like I was more witty! [laughs] In that space I was much more funny, but all the funny was written for him, and I was going “oh Danny.” So when I came in I really, I kind of, um, you know, I knew the frustration of playing the, kind of, you, you know-
Jo: Straight man.
Dana: The “oh Danny.”
Jo: -if you were playing, right, right, the brainiac, uptight brainiac, and Pete had all the funny lines, so obviously we were in a lot of scenes with the rest of the cast and keeping the story going, but I felt as though all the character stuff that we had as, as women came from the scenes when we were on our own, and obviously that first scene with the grappler, um, you know, was, it was kind of the first scene where I’d been playing kind of like a little, kind of kind of like sneaky little looks and curiosity and fascination with this woman-
Dana: Yeah, we noticed.
Jaime: And, but, but, I, but, it wasn’t until the grappler scene that I thought that, that i was starting to get this, kind of, this chemistry going, and then there was a scene, do you remember the scene where I didn’t know how to work a computer or open it, it was like a, I was like a monkey-
Jo: Yeah [laughs] yeah.
Jaime: I was like a, it was like, I didn’t know what this is, we were-
Dana: Well, I mean in, in f- in fairness you had been in bronze for a long time.
Jaime: -we were in like a stu- a student room, a student's room, it was-
Jo: Yeah, we were at the college, we were at U of T.
Jaime: And, and. and we’d, it was the first time we’d deci- you’d, you’d kind of begrudgingly decided that we could work together, and HG was kind of a little thrilled, and you were a bit begrudging and-
Jo: Yeah.
Jaime: There was all, we, we still had to, ‘cause like, in sci-fi there’s a lot of storyline and exposition and kind of fantastical stuff, which is super fun, but actually as actors you really get excited about the character stuff and there was always just this great character stuff whenever we were on our own with a scene-
Jo: Yeah.
Jaime: -um, because we didn’t have to worry so much about servicing all the other characters, we just serviced each other.
Dana: Well, you know, there are only two kinds of queer women. It is thrilling or begrudging, it’s one or the other. [all laugh]
Dana: They fit perfectly in there.
Jaime: I mean maybe that’s why it resonated so well, and maybe it was the reason it was so great, that it wasn’t written, because you had these two kind of like, kind of sli- slightly spiky kind of like flawed women, kind of like o- one, you know, one not particularly into the other at all, you know, so-
Jo: It was interesting, I still remember, I still remember receiving that energy and receiving that stuff and realizing, sort of plotting, cause I’m like, how long would it take Myka to figure this out?
Jaime: [laughs]
Jo: Seriously, I was like, cause, Joanne is not her,, I’m, you know, I’m wasn’t in the box that she, I always thought, Jack’s like, you’re exactly like that character, I’m nothing, I’m not- [laughs] I mean there’s a part of me that’s uptight but there's a part of me that’s most definitely not, so I was like how, and I really wanted to do the discovery of it within her, the like, this, the, this feeling started, and then her sort of, and M-Myka to me as a character as a whole was always somebody who was afraid, this is somebody who was always very scared of everything and presented themselves in this very [mimes acting stuffy and uptight] way because there was so much going on here [gestures to heart] and it was slow in the five seasons, I really wanted her to like, you know, relax and start laughing and not be so, and I was like, there’s a certain amount of wonder that was like-
Jaime: Endless wonder.
Jo: -ohhhh, ohhhhh, ohhhh, like you kind of see her, one of the things about that journey is you start to see her discover sort of herself and her own feeling surrounding that, which I thought was really special.
Jaime: And also you, um, you, you kind of ended up, you, you know, HG was kind of like a tricky character and she was always one step ahead, um for, that first season, but then when she started to fall apart, you were the one that kind of put her together, and then I felt like there was also this humor introduced, this lightness introduced to your character through the humor el- elements-
Jo: Yeah.
Jaime: -and the surprise, which was, um, really lovely for your character.
Jo: Yeah, I, I think for m- for me, you know, it was a decision I made like in season two that I k- she had to evolve and grow and sort of, um, I couldn’t, I was, I was, I was like, I can’t keep coming to work and putting a giant stick up my ass [laughs] like we’re doing, like I need just to like expand her and go towards her relaxing and really finding, I think for her the big thing was always finding connection, you know, this-
Dana: Sure.
Jo: -we, we see in the beginning of the show is, it’s very cut off, very isolated, very like, and I, she lost her partner, that was, when I read that script, immediately I was like, this is someone who’s so scared of losing people again that she’s never gonna let anyone else in, and that was sort of like my understanding of her. And when Jaime came on, it was such a great way to explore that, Myka opening, you know, as feelings developed, her opening, you know-
Dana: Well, that, the growth, the character journey that both of your, your characters went on, I think that is what makes the show still so enduring to fans, like why they feel so connected to it, because we do, we saw that journey, you know, both of you had your own journeys to go on and you somehow managed to cross, cross paths, and it may not have ended the way fans had wanted it to, but we still go so much out of it.
Jo: I’m so glad.
Dana: I wish it was endgame, but what can I do?
Jaime: We, we, we need a spinoff show for Jo and I, we, we need a spinoff show.
Dana: Okay, yes, the spinoff, okay! You need to talk about that because-
Jaime: Who do we need to talk to to make that happen?
Dana: I got in a lot of trouble on Twitter yesterday for not asking a spinoff question, uh, what, like, what would a spinoff look like between between HG and Myka?
Jo: I think it would be have, to be now, which we-
Dana: Yeah.
Jo: And we’d have to get her, there’s no ponytails in this story, there’s no suburbs, there’s no fucking ponytails, um, no-
Jaime: I won- I won- I wonder if, um, it could be now, but, or, I wonder if I, I had to come in for a mission and then I actually pulled you back into my time, that might be an interesting way to turn it on its head.
Dana: Ooh, Jaime Murray, there we go!
Jaime: If we both had to go back-
Dana: I love me some period.
Jaime: -into my time or you know what made me think that [she does the Jaime Murray hair flip™] what I-
Jo: [laughs]
Jaime: I saw that, I saw that ne- The Nevers-
Jo: I miss that hair flip!
Jaime: -the, the, the a- the adverts for The Nevers on HBO, and I’m like that is the HG Wells spinoff right there, and I was like super fucked that I wasn’t in that, and then I read that Joss Whedon was a consultant and I was like [inaudible] really bad, so, but, anyway I think that that’s what we should do. I, I’m also obsessed with that time period.
Jo: I mean, yeah, and also like it was real, yeah-
Jaime: It was the beginning of ps-
Jo: Yeah.
Jaime: -psychology, of like Tesla, of of like different thoughts, there was like, they were like spiritual, um, kind of scientists and atheism and there was all it this opportunity for change, which actually wasn’t taken, but it was actually, it’s super interesting right at the time, there was suffragettes-
Jo: Also a fish out of water for me would be so wacky, because I’m a fish out of water too, alright.
Dana: I’m curious if yo all saw the Saturday Night Live sketch the other, uh, last week with, uh, lesbian period drama-
Jaime: Oh!
Dana: -and how, how every lesbian, like anything that features lesbians now has to be- [laughs]
Jaime: Well have you e- have you ever-
Dana: -it’s like the Edwardian or, like the Edwardian times.
Jaime: Have you guys read Sarah Waters, do you know this?
Dana: Oh, of course!
Jaime: Like, so, and maybe that is actually what helped me get to HG Wells, but I loved those books when-
Dana: Oh, they’re so amazing.
Jaime: -I was growing up and I feel like we should make those o- we should remake one of those b- Jo, you’ve got to read those books, and then-
Jo: I’m writing it down! I’m taking notes!
Jaime: Oh, it’s amazing.
Dana: You two would be amazing in her most recent one.
Jaime: She writes these amazing Edwardian, Edwardian kind of wanton lust and then there’s like, like the vervain or whatever, that kind of drug that they used to take back then-
Jo: Opium?
Jaime: -so it’s like slightly, kind of like psychedelic, oh, it’s amazing, yeah, she’s amazing.
Dana: [laughs] Well, we unfortunately are out of time, and it’s been so much fun to talk to the two of you, and I, I love the love that you have for your characters, for your friendship, for the fans, uh, it’s, it’s so lovely to see, and thank you so much for making this work in your schedules, I know you’re both super busy doing your own projects, um, and I want to think Mark. Mark, you’re amazing, thank you so much for, for interpreting.
Jaime: Thank you, Mark!
Jo: Thank you, Mark!
Dana: Um, do you have anything you want to end with, to say to the, to the Bering lesbians out there?
Jaime: Well, first of all, I want to say that, um, if anyone sends me messages to, you know, pictures or anything that that Jo needs to see, I’ll make sure that Jo, Jo gets it, ‘cause she’s not on social media, and I’ll, I’ll share stuff with her so that she can kind of know the love from the community.
Dana: Yeah, great.
Jo: I think, um, I’m actually gonna try to put together a newsletter because I’m trying to get my shows made and I could use this community, you know, to help-
Dana: Oh, we will support you to the end! We will march off that cliff with you.
Jaime: I could help you make a Twitter account, just for our community.
Jo: I don’t wanna do Twitter, I wanna do a newsletter. [laughs] I don’t wanna, I don’t know how many characters are in it, but it’s not enough. [laughs]
Jaime: But Jo, Jo, you have to actually read some of the fanfiction. The fanfiction is epic.
Jo: I have a book that I got, somebody wrote a book-
Jaime: Unbelievable, oh my god.
Jo: -like a novel.
Jaime: They’re brilliant, these people are brilliant, like best fans ever.
Dana: There is some really incredible work out there.
Jaime: Well, do you want to-
Jo: I just wanted to say thank you to everyone, um, you know, I don’t do these very often, and just like, the outpouring of love, like just the connection, I really appreciate it, I’m so grateful, so thank you.
Jaime: Yeah, it’s such a beautiful community. I feel really proud to have been welcomed into it and, uh, very grateful.
Dana: Well, we’ll hope to see you another time, and thank you all who turned in to this panel. [Jaime blows kisses]
Jo: Thank you.
Jaime: Bye, guys.
Dana: Do you smell apples?
Jaime: Bye, Jo, I love you so much.
Jo: Do you smell apples? I love you too. [blows kiss] I’ll talk to you soon.
Jaime: Yes, I’ll see you later. Bye bye, darlings.
Jo: Bye.
Always Tell The Truth Part 2 ~ USWNT x Reader
Tumblr media
Okay so if you haven’t read the first part of this, which I will put here. Always tell the truth part 1 I suggest you do that, otherwise this one will make no sense. Also sorry... again for being gone so long. I hope you guys didn’t miss me too much. :)
-N
Previously...
“Those bruises, Y/N, where’d you get them?”
“I. Don’t. Know.”
“I don’t believe you.”
“Fine then, don’t believe me. First Alex, then Christen and now you. This is just great, my teammates think I’m a liar. Well I’m not and I’m telling you the truth.”
I brushed by her and stormed out of the room, now determined to avoid my teammates so they’d stop asking questions and questioning my honesty.
“I’m not a liar. I don’t know where I got the bruises, I don’t know why they won’t believe me.”
Present
After I stormed out of the room I share with Ali I ran... yes literally ran out of the hotel and out into the street. Well okay it was more like the sidewalk but whatever, I’m going for dramatic story telling here. I was angry, hurt and confused as to why my teammates couldn’t just believe me. I’ve never lied to them before, not ever. If something was going on I would have told them. And I genuinely have no clue where these bruises came from, I don’t remember hurting myself badly in practices or games and I don’t do any other crazy activities that would warrant the sudden appearance of severe looking injuries. I knew I just needed to clear my head so I started walking in a random direction hoping to get my thoughts together.
After a while I felt my phone vibrate in my pocket and knew it was probably one of my teammates looking for me so I ignored it. My phone stopped ringing only for a short time before it stared up again. This went on for several long minutes before it finally stopped. After each attempt from whoever was trying reach me there was a separate single vibrate indicating they left a message. I felt a little guilty for disappearing and probably worrying everyone but they shouldn’t have assumed or accused me of lying. Thinking they finally got the message that I didn’t want to speak to them I continued walking god knows where trying to think of what to say when I finally decided to go back. I was really deep in thought, trying to remember if and when I got the bruises. Obviously they don’t just appear like magic. They have to be caused by something, but... what? All the sudden I was hit with a vague memory
“Huh?... Wha- where am I?”
“You fell asleep on the couch dear. Don’t you remember? It was really adorable actually. My mom said super sweetly.
That’s weird, she’s never overly sweet with me, like ever.
“No, I don’t remember doing that.”
I looked around and the tv was on, which is also rare. It was playing a random comedy movie. Comedy? My parents don’t even like comedy movies.
“Oh well you did. Right after dinner, you dragged your feet over to the couch and was out like a light before we knew it.” She said casually.
My dad waltzed in like everything was totally normal. What the fuck is going on. Why don’t I even remember eating dinner? How long have I been here? Why does my body hurt so much?
I came back to the present feeling slightly uneasy. I remembered now a little bit of what happened when I got to my parents house and a little bit of what happened after I woke up from my nap. They managed to convince me everything was fine after that and I left assuming they were telling me the truth because I was too tired and too annoyed to argue. But the more I thought about it the more I wondered just how much of what they said is true. Why were there huge gaps in my time with them? And why do I get the feeling that the weird gut feeling I have isn’t a coincidence? I got lost in thought again but it was peaceful this time and quiet which I was relishing in.
Unfortunately the peace and quiet only lasted for a few minutes when I started to get what I assumed were dozens of texts. I finally got fed up and decided to silence my phone completely. When I unlocked it I saw a glimpse of some of the worried texts from the team. They all pretty much said the same thing;
“Y/N please come back. I’m sorry for saying I didn’t believe you. I’m just concerned about you. I want to talk and I’ll listen to whatever you have to say. Just please come back.”- Ali
“Hey kid, heard what happened. Wanna talk?”- T
“Y/n where are you? I heard what happened and that you left?? please come back, we’re worried.”- Christen
“Bruh what the hell? let’s talk?”- Ash
“where r u?”- Mal
“It’s not safe for you to be out by yourself. Ali told us about the other bruises. Whatever this is we’ll help you. We’re gonna start searching for you if you don’t get your ass back here soon. We love you.”- Alex
And it went on like that as every single member of the team texted me some variation of that and the voicemails they all left were much the same. I started to feel more guilty but let my anger keep me from replying to them. They can stew a little longer.
Meanwhile back at the Hotel...
CHRISTEN PRO//
“Okay, so tell us exactly what happened.”
“I saw the bruises when she was changing, which I happened to walk in on. I don’t think she was expecting me. I asked her what happened and she said that nothing had happened and I asked her about the bruises I saw on her arm, shoulder and spine and she continued to tell me she has no idea where they came from. I told her I didn’t believe her and then she got upset and she just... left.”
“Just like that? She didn’t say where she was going?”
“No, she was so angry she just stormed out and when I tried to follow after her she was already gone.”
“And she’s still not answering her phone. Damnit kid come on, where are you?”
“She’s not safe out there on her own, we have to go look for her.”
“And how are we supposed to find her when she doesn’t have her location on and is doing everything she can’t to ignore us?”
“I have no idea but we have to try.”
“We will, but we should give her a little more time. It’s possible she’s just around the corner cooling off. She’ll come back when she’s ready.”
“You’re right.”
“Guys I hate to steer us back into more serious topics but shouldn’t we be talking about the bruises she has that started all of this?”
“What do you guys think they’re from?” Megan asked.
“I want to believe her when she says she doesn’t know but I mean how can you just not know about bruises as severe as those?” Ash said.
“I mean... I’ve had some pretty bad ones I don’t remember getting from anywhere.” Mal said off-handily.
I saw some of the rest of the team nod silently, indicating that they too had, had the same thing happen to them. And I had to admit that I had my fair share of bumps and bruises that I couldn’t explain because they just seemed to appear but I was still concerned for our youngest teammate as it was getting pretty late and it was already dark outside.
“Oh god, you don’t think it’s her parents do you?” Tobin asked no one in particular.
We all paused for a moment to process what she was implying and I know we were silently hoping, praying that they wouldn’t do that to her. That they wouldn’t beat their own child.
“No, there’s no way. She’s told us that they love and support her and that even though they aren’t around much they still care about her.”
“Right, you’re right.”
“It has to be them though, I mean there’s no other explanation. She didn’t have them before or after practice right?” Alex asked.
“No, she didn’t.” Lindsey said solemnly.
“Do you really think parents can just flip a switch? Just like that? Be caring and supportive one minute and violent then next?”
“It’s possible.”
“No, just don’t even go there. I refuse to believe they would do that.”
“We would have seen the bruises if she had them before, since we all change in the same locker room together for practices and games remember?” I said
“Fuck. When I get my hands on them I swear to god...”
She didn’t get to finish her sentence because Y/n walked into the dining hall where we were all gathered.
“Get your hands on who?” She asked quietly
“Kid...”
“Y/n holy shit, thank god.”
“And she lives!... not the time? Got it.”
“Y/N... we need to talk.”
“Why? There’s nothing to talk about. I don’t know what Ali told you, but I don’t know where these fucking bruises came from okay? I don’t know. I’m sorry, I know that probably isn’t what you wanted to hear but it’s the truth. If you don’t believe me that’s fine but i’m not talking about it anymore.”
“Sweetie please just hear us out okay? We’re worried about you and getting defensive about them isn’t helping your case.” I said, trying to reach out for her but she backed away from me.
“Defensive? I’m just upset because you all still don’t seem to get it.”
“We want to get it, please just talk to us.”
“No.”
“Y/N, please just...”
“No! Okay, just no. I said we weren’t talking about it again and that’s final. What happened to “I’ll listen to whatever you have to say.” Huh, Ali? Good to know that was complete bullshit.”
“I’m sorry baby, please believe me, we just...”
“Oh believe you? For what? You clearly still don’t believe me so why should I give you that courtesy? You know what, this is all just fucking stupid anyways. I’m going to bed. Goodnight.”
And with that she disappeared up to the room she’s sharing with Ali. Leaving us all more confused and concerned than ever.
“Well... that went well.”
“Shut up Emily, so not the time.”
//End
Okay so yes that is yet another cliffhanger of sorts, I’m sorry but I thought that was a good place to end it. Just know that Y/N genuinely doesn’t remember a lot of what’s going on, just like she says. Her parents are definitely sus asf.
I’m actually writing part 3 rn so that should be up within the next day or so. I know I keep disappearing but my life is totally a mess rn lol. I’m back now tho and am excited to finally get to all the requests I have. Im so sorry for those waiting I haven’t forgotten. Promise.
What Is There To Celebrate About the Darkling? (Part 4)
1 2 3 4
He’s calculating but impulsive. Gentle yet firm. Stubborn and adaptive. Just a real mess of contradictions that makes him all the more interesting.
He loves nature. He loves the forest.
Fond of luxuries and nice things. After growing up as he did, I think he deserves them.
Very socially awkward. Introvert just trying his best. Anything that isn’t manipulation and therefore something he’s planned in his head is just a social train wreck waiting to happen.
The way he pushes up Alina’s sleeve when they first meet. This man had zero compunctions about acting completely unprofessionally in front of his soldiers and I think that’s very sexy of him.
He’s constantly tired and exasperated with the people around him.
The way he says “quiet” with the softest voice imaginable and a room full of laughter instantly goes silent.
He had no interest in Elizaveta even though she was utterly obsessed with him and I think that’s hilarious.
Elizaveta: I have a plan to resurrect the Darkling Everybody Else: Oh the Darkling is so evil for trying to come back! The Darkling, who just wants a nap and is sick of this mortal bullshit: Why am I even here? This is such a pain in the ass. I should have killed Elizaveta when I had the chance.
How he asks if Alina “will have” his name like a man proposing.
Has his bedroom attached to the war room.
Constantly checking up on Alina just to know how she’s doing. Never pushing her beyond her limits as she’s training.
Very creative with his shadows and the extent of their abilities. So many of the ways he uses his powers are genius.
His ending in RoW is a tragedy and an injustice. He deserves better.
This old man pouting at Alina in episode seven as he says “please, I just want to talk to you 🥺”
There is a black kefta made for Alina after like two days in the Little Palace. He really was already planning their entire immortal futures together as Mr. and Mrs. Starkov wasn’t he?
His bed is covered in maps and notes when he’s plotting how to find Alina. Also before that, the way he’s poring over the notes at his desk and giving orders is 👌🥵
Him acting like a real General at all is simply amazing.
The fact that he trusts Luda with his life. That they have a whole intimidation routine set up around him purposefully getting himself fatally injured knowing she’ll heal him.
He looks like a vampire in the show and a fae in the books.
His favorite ABBA song is probably “Lay All Your Love On Me.”
Looks composed but that’s only a façade. Is actually an unhinged feral terror of pain and misery.
That scene where he tells the king she will remain in the Little Palace to train undisturbed and he puts his foot down. ON THE RED CARPET. the king’s carpet. and uses a commanding voice that’s just on the edge of an order…I’m surprised he didn’t get flogged for that. IMO nothing conveys the fine line he walks with those in power while wielding his own like this scene. Literally he should just be celebrated for this alone.
“‘Why won’t you leave me alone?’ I whispered one night as he hovered behind me while I tried to work at my desk. Long minutes passed. I didn’t think he would answer. I even had time to hope he might have gone, until I felt his hand on my shoulder. “Then I’d be alone, too,” he said, and he stayed the whole night through, till the lamps burned down to nothing.
Trapped a bunch of Saints in the Shadow Fold like a true amoral disaster villain. What an icon.
His barely concealed amusement and half hidden smile when Alina comes to put his kefta on. The way he finds Alina utterly hilarious and tries so hard to act like he doesn’t.
That small amused smile when Alina jokes about finding Volcra hilarious. Please he’s so adorable 😭
“‘I know what you feel when you’re with the tracker,’ he said. ‘I doubt that’ He gave a dismissive wave.” - My Malarklina obsessed self, vibrating at the edge of my seat: but what does it mean?!?
Mal and the Darkling’s entire fight in the Fold: dumbass on dumbass violence.
The way he stands with his back turned to Alina when she enters his tent the first time they meet and then does the slowest Godfather turn in history. 1999/10 - points removed for a criminal lack of cat petting.
“I may lead the second army, but the king is still the king.” - the delivery of that line. the implications, the history behind it and also the foreshadowing for his plans.
That slow turn face reveal in episode one though. Like okay we get it you’re pretty alkjsdflkj
Confused Old Man Face™ whenever Mal or Alina do anything remotely defiant in his presence.
How he tells Alina to come closer and she only takes the tiniest step and he doesn’t even react.
His little head cock whenever someone says or does something that just doesn’t vibe with him.
Darklina tumblr has now convinced me that the Darkling is a cat in human form.
“You’re an amplifier,” she said. He glanced at where Sylvi was pouncing on another helpless tree, oblivious, and gave a single, frightened nod. How could he have been so stupid? He would have to tell his mother now, and she would insist that they leave right away. If word got out, they’d both be in danger. Amplifiers were rare, hard to find, harder to hunt. Their lives would be forfeit. Even if they got away, word would spread. He could already hear his mother’s voice: Foolish, careless, callous. If you don’t value your own life, show some concern for mine. Annika touched his sleeve. “It’s okay,” she said. “I won’t tell.” Panic crowded in. He shook his head. She slid her hand into his. It was hard not to pull away. He should. He was breaking his mother’s fundamental rule for keeping them both alive. Never let them touch you, she’d warned him. - 😥 I just want to give him a hug all the time.
His strangled shout when Mal tackles him off of the skiff.
His smile when he’s summoning the sun. The expression on his face when he does so. Like I know I’ve mentioned this before but damn. If you ever needed a reason to celebrate him, this would be it.
“Shame, I’ll have to give that speech again now.”
The way he flips Mal over his shoulder in the Fold after Mal attempts to strangle him.
His little lecture on the Small Science to Alina when they’re going to meet the King. Info dump.
“You make it sound so easy.” “A bird makes flight look easy. But it was born to do so.”
When Alina looks at him for guidance on whether or not to remove her veil and he gives her a small nod.
The handhold in the throne room after Alina’s demonstration is absolutely precious, but it’s in a room full of people he should be keeping up a façade for and it’s so unwarranted and yet he does it anyway, I’m-
The way he says “welcome home, Ms. Starkov,” in the most tender voice I’ve ever heard and then goes “ok that’s enough emotions for one day” and then just straight up leaves without even a goodbye.
He has his symbol?? Sewn into Alina’s kefta??? bRo???!?!
Disaster Simp never gets tired of introducing Alina to other people or talking about how she’s the best thing that ever walked this earth.
The Darkling lying: honestly
“I have devoted my life to undoing the great sin of my forebearer, but I am never seen as the solution. Only as a reminder of the problem.” Sasha you were literally the problem. What a manipulative little shit. We love to see it.
The way he closes his eyes and kisses the coin before he makes a wish at the wishing well.
“I think the Grand Palace is the ugliest building I’ve ever seen.” - I love him your honor.
This man has the most intense lines for Alina. Like straight up I would have booked it when he said “you and I are going to change the world”. But then the head grab?! “I’ve been waiting a long time for you.” He’s so intense like sir can you tone it down a bit please I am begging you.
“I shall be right by your side.” / “We can do anything. Together.” / “For us.” / “You cannot do this on your own. And neither can I” / “I want you to know my name. The name I was given, not the title I took for myself. Will you have it, Alina?” - WEDDING VOWS
That scene in the war room when Alina comes to find him and he instantly drops his guard and lowers his arms and welcomes her with a soft voice.
“Am I bothering you?” “Not at all.” - girl you could be stabbing him in the chest and you still wouldn’t be bothering him.
This whipped disaster sounds like the proudest man on the planet when he talks about how much more his enemies fear Alina over him.
His shadows react to his emotions.
“YoUr’E nOt IvAn.” asjlkdfjs god he’s so embarrassing.
Local Dark Lord Sasha offering Alina the throne after she literally tries to kill him.
He gets so jealous of Mal.
Has a great relationship with his soldiers and his men. His men trust him implicitly and believe him to be an amazing general.
When he turns around after Alina puts the kefta on him and looks flustered/has to take a breath because she’s a lot closer than he expected. The way he’s breathless and literally can’t string a sentence together because he’s so distracted by her closeness.
His jokes are absolutely terrible.
GF: *jokes about throwing herself down the stairs to get out of an event* Sasha “no thoughts head empty only Alina” Morozova: haha I’d just have my healers heal you right back up again.
How genuinely touched he is by Alina admitting to wanting to help Grisha and Ravkans.
That scene in Demon in the Woods when he notices the intricate details of the politics in the Grisha camp after one meeting with the Elders. He has the Ulle pegged almost instantly.
Born to be a leader. Born to take care of others. Born to protect. Even in Demon in the Woods he’s protecting people. Even in Demon in the Woods he’s leading them and caring for them.
The way he cups his hands around Alina’s face when they’re kissing.
This man gets so starstruck by Alina walking into the Fete that he doesn’t even excuse himself from the King’s side to go to her.
Long haired Aleksander rights!
Ok I know the wig was kind of ugly but he looks pretty with long hair and I think it would look very good on him naturally.
The way he slams his hands together in the Winter Fete scene and instantly turns the room pitch black.
Literally any times he summons shadows is a blessing and we should all celebrate him for it. They are so beautiful. On god if I ever saw his shadows in real life I would be awestruck.
He asks Mal if he’s okay when they first meet.
The pure, barely contained fury directed at the Conductor for daring to harm Alina and kidnap his Grisha.
He always has to make a grand entrance.
This man is like a bloodhound when it comes to Nina. He is very invested in finding her and I feel like that’s never really talked about.
“I know exactly how she felt. The King’s soldiers treated me the same way. Because they knew- they knew that I was more important than any of them.” - the way he says it, like it’s something he has to remind himself of in his head constantly. a justification for the way he’s been treated, the fear he evokes in others. a way to protect himself from the hurt of being ostracized and reviled. arrogance and conceit as a defense against emotional harm.
Also the way his face instantly changes after that, like he’s said too much. vulnerability. lowering his eyes. shifting his eyes. literally just everything about this scene makes me love him all the more.
Dark carriage rides up to the Crows’ hiding place. Grisha circle the area as Aleksander steps from the carriage slowly, dressed all in black, floofy cloak high on his shoulders. Villain Entrance™
Him slowly pulling a knife out of his chest like it shouldn’t have killed him is hot as fuck and also totally badass. Big dick energy.
“I’ve had enough of your lies.” “And what lies are those?” - Alina, pulling out a fifty mile long scroll of grievances: Well, for starters-
This man is literally just an Alina Starkov compliments machine.
He cares so much about the Grisha and their protection. He loves Ravka and his people so much.
He had an entire cult dedicated to him.
“They would approach him. They always did. But he felt more anxious than usual. He’d stopped trying to make friends in the places he and his mother visited—there was no point when they moved on so quickly. Now he wasn’t quite sure how to go about it.”
Save a Villain. Murder the King.
Openly admits to staging a coup like it’s the most natural thing in the world.
He speaks so slowly. He moves so slowly. Everything he does has to have Purpose and Gravitas.
Theater Nerd™
He knew Nikolai for years and yet couldn’t recognize him as Sturmhond. We do stan an oblivious icon 💕
The Darkling after he gets his ass whooped in Siege and Storm: Mom can you please come pick me up? I’m scared!
He’s here to manipulate sun summoners and murder cities. And unfortunately he’s all out of sun summoners.
Would absolutely get drunk on real alcohol. This man thinks kvas is strong liquor.
Has his wrists exposed exactly one time in the most skin he’s shown all season and it’s when Alina visits him at night in the war room. WHORE!
Was too emotionally slutty and fell for Alina. RIP.
He’s passionate and cold and beautiful and hurt and twisted up in ways nobody could ever hope to understand and he’s stunning.
I would literally kill for this man 🖤✨
I read Ruin and Rising because I’m bored
And I also hate myself
Like with the last book, I have a vague idea of the plot and stuff from tumblr and fanfics. I will also be refering to Darkling as Sasha for most of this.
I am still Darklina trash and don’t particularly like Mal.
On a different note, I’ve finally moved for college, but the internet here is trash, so I’ll probably have a lot more reading time now, since most games I play are online and will crash without internet.
Before
Cool story. Let’s hope Alina stays a badass.
Who am I joking, I know how this ends.
Chapter 1
So far so good. I hate the Apparat, per usual. Alina’s there basically dying and that bitch can’t wait to see her do so.
Cult leader to the core this one. He probably hates that his figurehead is alive and also not brainwashed.
Cult leader doesn’t like swearing. How surprising.
My boy David is completely right. What kind of irresponsible dingus keeps centuries old books in a fucking wet-ass cave? (Or a tree for that matter *cough cough* The Last Jedi *cough, cough*).
Genya is fun to be around.
Oh, shit, let’s go.
Chapter 2
Jesus Christ, Alina, Zoya isn’t that bad.
This is one hell of a shitshow.
I live for this version of Alina. Badass. Scary. I want more of this Alina.
Chapter 3
Out of all the random little details from crappy smut fics, I did not expect Oncat to be from the books, lol.
Mal actually has a supernatural tracking ability. Like, literally, they put a bug into the pouch with gunpowder so he could make the shot. I guess this was kinda said before, but never this directly, right?
Alina’s merzost-skyping Sasha now, yay.
Alina is horny for Sasha boy. Yay.
Alina canonically has a praise kink. Nice.
I hate LB with all of my heart at this very moment. How dare she bait us Darklina people like this? How DARE she? (Shipbaiting is the worst, seriously.)
Tumblr media
Yes, yes, yes. These two lines. That’s what their relationship is all about. They’re each others foils, the yin to the other’s yang and... ugh. I am Darklina trash to the core and this hurts.
Darklina: You have a terrible taste in men.
Alina: I liked you once.
My boy Sasha walked into that one.
Chapter 4
Alina is a Queen. And we love her.
David, my beloved, my spirit animal.
It’s surprising they can read it at all, given it’s been centuries. Have you ever tried reading medieval manuscripts?
Honestly, with a father that crazy, it’s no wonder Baghra’s a bitch. And I’ve seen it said somewhere that the books imply Ilya’s experiments are what caused Baghra to be a shadow summoner and you know what? I can see how you’d make that connection.
Why is there so few Tidemakers in the books? Waterbenders are useful. I want more waterbenders.
Tumblr media
Alina picking up some habits from Baghra I see.
Ah, yes, we love an educated giant.
I’m starting to think Harshaw is a bit nuts.
Shut up, Hershey. Or at least share the weed with the class. I’m not here for this “He’s mean to you because he likes you”. I might believe that in like, elementary school, but yall are (more or less) adults. Jesus.
Well, that was a bombshell of a twist.
Chapter 5
Oh boy, we’ve got some trauma bonding for out merry band of misfits. Yay.
Adrik has a crush on Zoya. And she hates it, lol. Cut the kid some slack, he’s like 15 or something.
That reminds me, I have a four-leaf clover pressed in books from close to year and a half ago. Time flies.
They’re really diving into the Mal has supernatural powers, huh?
Ghosts, let’s go.
Alina “I’m so happy to be outside I start to shine like a fucking fairy” Starkov and Mal is entranced. He’s definitelly nicer now. I’m not forgiving him for all the shit he’s pulled before and for using the silent treatment way too much, but hey, at least he’s improving.
I am not a Zoyalina person, but like... gay? Please? Rivals to grudging allies to friends to lovers, 300k slowburn? Sounds more fun than whatever Mala dn Alina have going on, lol.
(I’m starting to realize I’m not as much a Darklina person as I am anti-Malina person, lol. Like, literally everyone has a more interesting dynamic with Alina than tracker boy over there. Malina is at best boring AF and at worst toxic, codependent and emotionally abusive, while also being boring AF at the same time. It has literally nothing going for it except God herself liking it).
I can see why Nadia is gay in the show. The book version of her definitelly has a crush on Tamar. Homegirl likes a woman, who can murder her with the flick of her wrist and honestly? Same.
Alina has some big “coming out of lockdown after a year” energy atm.
The cat is one of the most realistic characters in this thing, lol.
And since Tamar is also heavily queercoded, our lovely ladies make off into the night, flirting. Or maybe not. Let me dream, though.
At least Blade Boy is aware that his tattoo is stupid. To quote someone ranting about him on tumblr: He’s embracing his identity as a tool.
Oh, boy, this will be fun.
Evil soldier is horny for Mal. Saints, is there a woman in this book who isn’t horny for Blade Boy?
And here comes Niki to save the day.
Chapter 6
Niki saved the day.
Fiberglass? And David being David. Genya being in love with her nerd of a boyfriend.
Jesus Christ, this one crazy kid has moved the technology in this universe a whole century on his own. So, when is David going to propose to him?
Baghra hasn’t changed much I see.
Baghra’s about to drop some truthbombs, but no, we have to be rudely interupted because Genya’s rapist is throwing a fit.
Chapter 7
How does Mal sound? Is she gonna say the Blade boy sounds like her dad? I mean, I know voices are partially genetic, but it has been tens of generations between them, probably.
So, we’re finally taking Genya’s trauma seriously after all this time? Good. Better late than never, I guess.
I wish that regicide was already finished and I’m pretty sure that Genya does, too. Stop defending the fucking king, narrative.
David’s a nerd in all things I see.
Someone please just kill the king already. And the queen, too, for good measure.
Now that’s a romance.
Infodumping and listening to said infodumps is a legitimate love language, Alina. Let them nerd out over poisons.
Wait, has Alina never directly killed anyone before? I thought she did... hmmm.
And just like that, it should have been over. Ugh.
Somehow, Baghra is a better teacher now than she was before. She half feels like a completely different character.
Nevermind, she’s back at it.
Chapter 8
Holy shit, Nadia and Tamar are canon. They have canon gays here.
So, which one of them is gonna die?
Chapter 9
We arrive at that scene. The one, where they should have fucked.
Jeez, girl, get a hold of yourself. Life is short, fuck a villain.
In other news, Genya and David definitelly fucked.
Chapter 10
Poor David. He just wanted to know.
Damn... I never realized just how young Baghra was, when she killed her sister.
I’ve already made a post about this, but it really does strike me like Baghra has already decided to end her life at this point in the book.
Why is that whole “but what if we’re related” thing even in there?
Chapter 11
We love a suprise attack.
When did Sasha boy learn that trick?
Baghra really just did that. Oh boy.
Chapter 12
No, don’t kill the kid... ugh.
Emotiona support cat. She should be friends with Milo.
Porrige for brains. Oof.
So Nadia was the one, who got bees set on her in the book. Cool.
That’s a good question. Why was it never brought up to Alina, that other Grisha get blocks, too?
David already thinking of steampunk prosthetic for Adrik is honestly kinda sweet.
Chapter 13
Back home... kinda.
Is that really... you really care about Mal bonking the Grisha school mean girl over a year ago? Okay.
Chapter 14
Angst! Yay!
And more angst.
Chapter 15
Sasha really went “My mom killed herself to save you? Well, I’ll kill the closest thing to parents you have.”
Chapter 16
Nikolai’s alive. Kinda.
And these two have such a sibling energy, I can’t.
And then they fuck. Ew.
Chapter 17
Wait, wait wait... so Alina isn’t even the one to destroy the Fold?
Okay. That’s... weird.
Holy shit. That was...
So, Aleksander is dead. Mal isn’t. Someone else destroyed the Fold for Alina and now she has no powers.
Okay.
That’s a weird-ass ending.
Chapter 18
The gays survived, so that’s nice.
Genya made good on her promise of making Alina a ginger, lol.
After
What emotion is this supposed to give me? Cause all I feel is kinda sad.
shadow and bone rewatch s1e6 while drinking mid-range scotch
I wish I have a face that is as unlined and pretty as Ben Barnes' when I'm 39
Arken you dirty dirty liar
the face Alek is making at his lies that he knows are lies firstly because he knows the art of lying so well and also because he can read people very well
okay Ivan is kind of a bad bitch with his smirk at Arken's lies
alek's eyes narrowing and his little smile when Arken says 'im an entertainer' bitch I love this show
*grabs hand, pulls up sleeve, and discovers Arken's hand is full of marks indicating successful passages through the fold* 'well, that is certainly entertaining' I love this man with all my heart
him screaming is so fucking hot, is that weird for me to say
Nina being the Darkling's spy is quite interesting
Ben giving the Darkling crazy eyes when Arken owns up to his guilt is so cool
also wtf is Arken a fool trying to negotiate with possibly the strongest man in the world
kind of loved the darkness literally eating him
also love Alina learning to use her powers better when she is alone than when she is with anyone else, wish we got to see the cut in this season as per the books, ah can't have everything I guess
the camera pan to Jesper's gun at his side, amazing
god Jessie is literally so beautiful I need to see her bring Alina to the peak of her power so bad
netflix you better renew this series to let the plot run to its completion
HOW THE FUCK DID THEY CAST THE CROWS SO PERFECTLY
INEJ FUCKING TREMBLING JUST THE TINIEST BIT AS SHE BOWS SLIGHTLY TO ALINA SGSHSBSJJSJSSJ MY TWO QUEENS
'And where is my Summoner?' my little Darklina heart ouchie I really wish you hadn't used and manipulated her like this Alek it was incredibly fucked up especially considering you actually caught feelings
'Ivan and I won't fail you' oh Fedyor my baby, my angel, you don't deserve what is coming
Helnik literally recreating Titanic lmao stop this is a joke
I too would jump off the raft if I came to consciousness to see a gorgeous woman with magical powers with her hand on my back
omg but why is ryevost so pretty though
'I know exactly how she felt. The King's soldiers treated me the same way... I'm not myself today.' why must you do this to me, why must you fuel my darklina soulmates agenda idiocy
I don't quite think I have a problem with the Zoya Darkling relationship as much as I have a problem with the line they chose to reveal it to use with.
my drink's over and I don't know if I should have another, considering that it's 7 am
the tenderness with which he looks at Zoya and takes her hand and then when he says 'I shall relax when I have Alina' makes me believe more that the man that is reduced to tears time and again in front of Alina could in fact be the master manipulator I know him to be
god I can't wait for Zoya's character arc
'I speak six languages, it's part of my job' why is Nina literally the fucking coolest
Alina blinding the oprichniki was so hot, I can't wait to see more of her power and her ruthlessness
I know I've said it before but good god is Jessie Mei Li gorgeous
HER LITTLE SMILE AMONGST ALL THE PANIC AS SOON AS SHE SEES MAL, THE AUDACITY OF THIS SHOW TO MAKE ME FEEL THIS WAY
THE SCORE COMING IN AT THE RIGHT MOMENT, THEIR HANDS MEETING, HER SMILE AGAIN DHDHSBSNSNSNSNAN IM IN PAIN
REALLY?! YOU'RE GONNA GO DIRECTLY FROM MALINA TO HELNIK WITH NO CONCERN FOR MY HEART?
I simply cannot get over Calahan's accent lmao it's really funny
'im not afraid of you' he says to the insanely gorgeous girl with magic
HIM HANGING HIS HEAD IN DEFEAT TO INDICATE NINA HAS MADE VALID POINTS YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND I CAN'T BREATHE
'You're just a man. Like all the others.' she says and then forgets her train of thought looking at him as he strips. god I love this
not sleeping all night and then scotch is not a good idea, I think
'I promise not to ravish you' 'I hate the way you talk' her hand on his chest, his hand gripping hers, my fucking heart feels like it's about to explode
good god these shooting locations and sets are so beautiful
Alina throwing the flask at Mal and Mal going 'OI!' I fucking can't, I guess I am a
simp for childhood friends to lovers, give me more of that banter and childhood friend energy, I am thriving
wow it literally seems like they took book! Mal sl*tshaming book! Alina and made show! Alina sl*tshame show! Mal, hmm, interesting
'They would have split us up!' MAL'S LITTLE SMILE AT THIS, and the 'You wrote me letters?' Mal's nod, the Malina yearning stare, the Malina hug, 'thank you for finding me' 'always. I'll always find you.' NO MALINA YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND YOU HAVE MADE ME ABSOLUTELY FUCKING FERAL
I understand they had to split time between my ravkan babies and the crows and that is why there were several aspects that were sort of not reflected on enough but Alina's training at the Little Palace, Alina's cut, Mal's personality, a teensy bit of backstory for the crows, maybe one lockpicking scene from my boy Kaz
random note: we have far too many idols and paintings and pictures and whatnot of Hindu deities in our house apart from the specially designed temple (we are Hindus, so maybe it's not that weird but it's a little weird)
Kaz's cane is a literal star, it's so beautiful my heart wants to explode
'Why would Heleen get the Crow Club?' *literally fucking gets up and walks aways instead of answering the fucking question* I LITERALLY CAN'T BREATHE I'M LOSING MY MIND
'I know that voice' WHO GAVE YOU THE RIGHT TO MAKE ME FIGHT FOR PLATONIC SHIPS IN FANDOMS
'We won't starve' omg get you someone who packs food for you when you go on the run together hiding from your ex who wants to capture you and use your powers as a weapon against your consent
Mal looking surprised at her summoning sunlight, Alina looking cautiously at him waiting for him to disapprove or run for the hills in fear or smth like that, 'I'm sorry it took me this long to see you... But I see you now' my dumb little shipper trash heart ouch
they really said we're gonna feed you this part asian couple as the protagonists in this show in 2021 and guess what I'm eating it's really tasty I'm very satisfied as a south asian
NINA'S LITTLE SMILE WHEN MATTHIAS WAKES UP WITH HIS ARM AROUND HER
'I can feel how much you hate sleeping next to me' 👀👀👀 BITCH SAID IMMA SPILL THE TEA AND THEN SHE DID
it's 8 am and guess what I'm getting another drink my parents have c*vid and are in govt qu*r*ntine centres there is nobody to supervise or stop me
I too say 'Why do you have to say things like that?' to my pretty crush when she flirts with me
Nina smiling at Matthias bragging about his conservative ways is my aesthetic
'No, it's not natural for someone to be as stupid as he is tall and yet, oh, there you stand.' MY FUCKING QUEEN
Matthias laughing uncontrollably at Nina saying something which isn't even that funny is a whole ass vibe
Kaz Brekker saying 'The Black General' ooh fuck yeah
YESSSS STEP OUT OF THAT CARRIAGE ALL SEXY BLACK GENERAL
isn't alcohol supposed to like kill germs? well, the amount in my system definitely will
I love my crows so much (always but this time particularly for setting that alarm in the stolen carriage)
ooh Polina recognising Inej by the knife yesss let's go writers
this Ivan Jesper showdown is all I needed from life and yet did not know about
Ivan taking off his cloak was, um, sexier than I wanted it to be
I just realised how thirsty I am going to sound in this post
'Has no one told you that keftas are Fabrikator-made and resistant to bullets, hmm?' 'Oh, I do love a challenge' LITERALLY EVERYTHING
im sorry to be pointing out flaws in a perfect show and adaptation but the line delivery on 'You robbed me of my brother, now I'll rob you of your life' from Polina was kind of weak
'You're a-' *gets knocked out with the back of a gun* LMAO we love the hints
got excited at the prospect of kaz v. zoya until I realised they will not be letting the opportunity of kaz v. darkling pass up
my goodness is Amita Suman a splendid actress
I AM NOT KIDDING WHEN I TELL YOU I SQUEALED WHEN I SAW DARKLES EMERGE OUT OF THE SHADOWS IN FRONT OF MY BABY BOY KAZ
THERE BEING ACTUAL FEAR OR ATLEAST DOUBT ON KAZ'S FACE, THE LITTLE BACK STEPS AS
THE DARKLING WALKS TOWARDS HIM, AAAAH I CAN'T
THE DARKLING STOPPING AT KAZ SAYING 'SHE FLED ON HER OWN' AND THE HINT OF TEARS THAT WE SEE IN HIS EYES
'IT WAS PRETTY CLEAR SHE WASN'T INTERESTED IN BEING A CAPTIVE ANYMORE' YOU TELL HIM, KING
*ACTUAL FUCKING TEARS IN THE DARKLING'S EYES AS THE SHADOWS APPROACH*
NOT ME YOWLING LIKE A HYENA THAT THIS CHILD OUTSMARTED THE MOST POWERFUL MAN IN EXISTENCE WITH A FAKE MAGIC TRICK
'Are you sure you added enough cloves?' literally warranting a wide ass smile from my queen Alina making my entire fucking day
for some reason, no matter how much I push it from my mind, Ben Barnes dressed up as the Darkling, dancing to 'push it' keeps coming to mind, it's absolutely ridiculous
I got somehow distracted with interviews but good things came out of that as it gave my body the time for the booze to kick in
and I would just like to say that I love Leigh for all she has given me
Alina is so fucking compassionate, I have no much love for her. I can feel her guilt and her sorrow as Mal talks of Mikhail and Dubrov
don't particularly like how the stag plotline is woven in, could have been executed better
'You're afraid you might start to like me?' *flaps furs like a bird's wings in frustration*
'I DO like you' my fucking heart you idiots
the sexual tension is so palpable and the moment is so intimate I simply cannot
OMG SHE FUCKING FELL
that moment where you think he might let her fall despite having read the books and he doesn't and he tells her his name I- <3
YOU DARE TRANSITION FROM A HELNIK SCENE TO A KANEJ SCENE YOU REALLY HAVE NO MERCY FOR MY HEART HUH
people have talked about this endlessly but Freddie's little jaw tic after he says Inej because Inej is wounded and he can't physically bring himself to help her I fucking cannot
THE MUSIC PICKING UP AS KAZ LOOKS TO THE DARKLING'S CARRIAGE I CAN'T WITH THIS SHOW ANYMORE
and now for one of my favorite scenes in television and cinematic history, David Kostyk throwing a book at Jesper Fahey without even knowing who he is merely because he opens the door of his carriage and says hello to him before getting knocked out by Kaz Brekker while trying to run away
Immediately followed by another, the scene with David Kostyk raising his finger to put forward his point in front of the Darkling and the Darkling trying to let him know he doesn't have to before obliging is one of my favourite scenes in the world
also sir please stop being devastatingly attractive in your glorious appearance with your face and your black kefta and cloak because all that comes to mind is Ayesha Erotica's Emo Boy and I'm afraid that is terribly inappropriate.
'No, you look great.' *literally looks down from embarrassment or blushing* MALINA RIGHTS?
THE LOOK ON THE DARKLING'S FACE BEFORE HE SAYS 'NO ORDINARY TRACKER, NO ORDINARY GIRL' BITCH IM OUT OF BREATH
'ORPHANS OF KERAMZIN, REUNITED.' 'ADORABLE.' HE FUCKING SNEERED IRL I FUCKING CANNOT
GOD IT'S SO GOOD
Fanon Eames is closer to Canon Arthur and Vice Versa
Tumblr media
Hear me out, here me out
I’ve been thinking about this since forever, and I only recently started talking to people about it and I am?? So shocked but happy about the amount of people who agree with me. You lot are amazing :’)
I shall try to make my thoughts coherent, stay with me.
Before I do, I just want to say your opinions are valid, always, even if I may be going at this hard right now.
[lots below the line]
This isn’t to say that our fanon perceptions are terrible, that I don’t love them. I do! They’re lovely, heck, go through my feed, there’s a lot that’s gripping fanon.
And our writers are so wonderful. Honestly if one of you wrote a fic describing contents in your trash cans I’d probably read that too. Oh and!! What I continue saying may actually be your fanon perception, if so, awesome, ty pfft.
But here’s the thing.
Arthur isn’t prissy? He’s not really an uptight stick-up-his-yeehaw person. In canon he’s actually quite warm.
I say this from a v neutral POV, no ships or anything.
He’s very understanding and warm to Dom right from the start, when he notices Mal’s shadow. He’s so soft and caring about it and it is 😭💞
Everyone knows about this one but The way he says “she was lovely” about Mal to Ari :((
The way he treats Ariadne the entire time.
Tumblr media
I know Christopher Nolan tried to make their ship happen, but the thing is, that’s still him? As much as a lot of us cringe at the kiss, it’s canon. It happened. And it definitely adds to how little we know about Arthur.
See thing is, you can tell a lot about a person by the way that they treat someone new. It’s very ... well, it sort of defines a person in a way. (By that I don’t just mean first impressions— I mean after the first one, well.)
He’s very nice to her at the start when she’s learning everything and etc, he’s super warm (and oh my God that little smug smile he had the first time? Come on.) and encouraging. We love him.
And he flirts. This trope is usually given away to Eames, if so, but truth is; he flirted with Ari when he said give me a kiss. You smooth little point man you 😫❤️
I’ll keep saying that he’s super warm because he is, okay >:(❤️
If I watched the movie again right now while talking about this, I assure you I could go on and make this post longer than my own fics. But I’ll spare you guys from that this time around.
Ahhh gosh, there’s one thing that I see around that Arthur’s not very ... smiley?
I’m gonna have to. Disagree there. He actually does smile a lot.
I feel like I should point out that a lot of the scenes we see are when he’s working, when he’s on a job. He’s a point man, yaknow, it’s kind of a built in this to be determined and keep your head in the game.
At the start when he’s frowning and all, it’s because the job might get botched, because Saito’s in the helicopter, etc.
But then there’s the scenes in between mainly when he’s teaching Ari, and if you can’t see how soft he is there, I really do urge you to give it a rewatch.
Tumblr media
He smiles!! He’s adorable.
And what’s the first thing we see of his when we’re at the end of the movie, back in the plane? Him smiling again.
But before that, they were trying to do a job when projections start shooting them up, Saito’s bleeding, Dom Cobb’s yelling. It’s just. Hell.
And it’s super justified for him to be so tense. He’s the point man, he was supposed to know all the little bits around their job but now a man’s bleeding while someone yells at him saying it’s his fault, of course he’s going to take that blame to himself.
Tumblr media
He actually handles Cobb very calmly (if I were there —as I mentioned before—, I would shoot Cobb, no questions asked.), he’s very patient about it. But after Cobb stops hovering over his head, he’s had time to process how this might truly be his fault (I’m sorry bby you did your best :(().
Another thing is—, Arthur’s a very expressive person. A lot of that goes to Joe, ofc, but my man cannot keep a stony face, his expressions are always saying something. A lot of fics say that his face is unreadable but really, it’s just that he has a lot of layers on sometimes <3
Tumblr media
(ALSO WAIT I HAVE TO MENTION—HE WHISPERS “PARADOX” INTO THE PROJECTIONS EAR BEFORE PUSHING HIM OFF THE STAIR AHSHJSHDHD THAT WAS SO ADORABLE PFFT)
Tumblr media
What I’m really trying to get at here is that Arthur!! Is actually  A very warm. Kind. Lovely. A bit flirty. A lot supportive. Very smart (everyone gets this one right always ofc) person.
Honestly, bless the creators who’ve already written my babe like this, but I just really really needed to get it out there.
It isn’t to say your fic is of less value. Tbh my favourite fics, Arthur’s a bit of the cold prissy person, but I’m just trying to distinguish here, yaknow?
Tumblr media
Okay I was adding the pictures and I remembered wanted to say that the way Arthur carries himself is actually quite carefree!! Just how he handles himself in general, he moves with ease, but ngl an example is the chair leaning thing. Hes so ,,, not rigid guys :((
I also made one tailored towards Eames!! Didn't want completely flood this and make it a long one. Check that out too, if you'd like, thanks!
Edit: I can’t believe I tried so hard not to make this ship-like I completely forgot to add Eames skhjdfhf
“What the fuck were you spitting out there hmm! Have you lost your mind? Why aren’t you answering me you shit!”
jaehyun avoided prying when mark and yuta were arguing but he couldn’t keep it in anymore. mark shifted the gears to park the car in the middle of nowhere, tense silence hugging all of them. jaemin was annoyed with jaehyun’s endless remarks at mark but it was hyuck who was most confused as he was unable to form any kind of judgement.
“why did you stop the car now? Its midnight-
“can you stop drunk talking hyung. I can’t drive like this!”
“I’m very sober. Its you whose brain is dead mark. Did you even notice yuta’s face when you-
“just stop hyung. I’m not ashamed of what I said there. I stand by each and every word! Now can we go back home or do you have anything else?
“you can’t be real! He has done so much for you all these years and this is how you repa-
“yes exactly! He has made so many sacrifices for me all these years, that’s why its my responsibility to show him the right way that he is clearly not following at all and you all are partly responsible for it! You are feeding his selfish ego by showing him hollow sympathy but that’s gonna bite him in the ass at end.”
“woah woah tiger. So what you gonna do? Instruct him how to live his life. Are you making him realise that he doesn’t hate y/n when he clearly cant stand her presence for even a minute and by some miracle, even if you end up pacifying yuta, then what about that cold hearted queen! She’s just here t-
“she is not here on her own! And I am not going to repeat myself, so fix it in your head hyung. She is not here to replace anyone!! Yuta hyung just hates the thought of her coerced and fortuitous presence in his life and I’m not trying to create a miracle here. I just want our lives back to normal and I’ll go to every extent to make it possible!” his chest heaved up and down as the anger subsided a bit, his heart feeling at ease after getting his thoughts out. Jaehyun only scoffed at him.
“you are too naïve markie. This is not how emotions work.”
“this is the only way emotions work hyung!” with that said, he shifted the gear, driving on the road with the same silence lurking again but he felt better. much better.
“who do you think is right?” hyuck whispered in jaemin’s ear, in the hope that he would solve his dilemma.
“I don’t know but I’d love if she stays forever. We are missing one member anyway” he whispered back earning a small tight lip smile from donghyuck who fell into a deep slumber right after that.
Tumblr media
Slowly he moved himself to the other side, bruised elbow secured in his hand, grunts exiting him. You knew you were fucked up as soon as his cold eyes fell upon you.
“I guess it’s my time to call taeyong.” He glared, the strong eye contact not lasting for too long as he tried to lift himself up from the floor.
Meanwhile you kept observing him, biting your left thumb, feet glued to the ground. your eyes followed his hobbled travel from the kitchen to the couches from where you heard his long sigh of relief as he placed his leg on the table while stroking his knee. his head fell on the couches and suddenly your conscience kicked in while watching his painful expressions. You found yourself sluggishly walking out of the kitchen with careful steps to avoid the spill, sleepiness fading away.
Yuta’s scraped elbow was in the vision as you neared him. He was still nursing his knee, elbow forgotten by now. Maybe it was the momentary pain! you deliberated about asking him first but then remembered that you don’t have to communicate with him to show that you were still human! So you quietly went to bathroom to find your first aid kit that you placed somewhere the day you settled your stuff. It was not easy to locate it with the lack of cooperation of your hands and mind in the current state, but still you tried your best.
With same motion you went back. Yuta’s hand was still cupping the knee but his features seemed to be much more peaceful than before. But you still approached hesitantly and placed the box on the table, near his foot.
“have a seat please. We have some unfinished business here beautiful!” he sneered, signalling you to sit beside him.
“no thanks. I have work to do.” You tiredly replied, moving away.
“I.Said.Sit.Here! I also wanna experience the thrill of whinning like a baby!
“oh please , I have nothing to fear! Just call him already. I’ve work to do!” you told him in stern voice while circling the table to sit far away from him.
Yuta smirked a little at your show of bravery when anyone could see right through you at the moment. Your eyes were half shut, shoulders slumped down but still upright when it came to fighting him. But yuta clearly knew he had the upper hand this time.
Or he thought!
Your heartbeat sped up with each ring. Very dramatically , yuta had put the phone on speaker to prove his point.
After 5 rings, tayeong picked up and so did your pulse.
“who it is?” a yawn filled voice was heard from the other side.
“are you still sleeping bitch?” yuta inquired with annoyance.
“ye-yes. We cleared the month last night so everyone is sleeping. What el-
“just wake up! I’ve something important to tell!”
“later. I’m bus-
“its about your precious y/n!”
“is she gone?” it sounded like he was suddenly awake!
“tsk tsk. The fuck is your problem? Do you even care about my wellbeing or should I find a new father!” yuta growled at him, his voice pierced through your ears.
“I’ll call her myself!”
“like she would tell you about her plan to lay my 6 feet under the ground!”
Yuta heard a deep sigh from the other side.
“this story better be good coz I don’t wanna lose my sleep ov-
“this is not a story. She spilled water to make me slip and –
“and kill you. what kind of man dies after a little slipping! Huh!”
“have you adopted her or something taeyong! Your attitude is fucking me up. Can you hear me for once or do you-
“what do you wanna say exactly! That you slipped and broke your legs and arms. Make it believable yuta. She might be a bit bitchy but can’t be that evil.”
“so I am a bitch!” your sleepy and cold voice interrupted.
“no no , I meant-
“It was unintentional. i didn’t even know he was home. And it was him who decided to barge in when I was finding food. He was not even invited into the kitchen in the first place!”
“but I got hurt and it was because-
“hurt? you mean as in injured! Oh god. You can’t come back then. take leave for a few days if you are hurt badly and call jun , he’ll be there with medicines and bandages. Consider this an extension of the suspension but you aren’t leaving the hous-
“fuck you taeyong! I hope you die in your sleep!!”
Slamming the phone on the table, he pulled at his roots, lidded eyes boring into you.
“you’ll pay for this.” his finger threateningly pointed towards you.
You let out a yawn before getting up to leave the space to him,
“whatever just don’t finish the spray bottle. Its new”
After that you didn’t hear anything from yuta or anyone.
And it just went like that for 2 more weeks!
Tumblr media
“why don’t you shift to the dorms for two months! You can hang out with minjun while he complete his reports.”
“so you want me to lose my sleep and baby your baby?” you snickered, slurping the soup a bit louder this time.
“I’m not a baby!” minjun whined.
“oh you are!” a collective response resounded through the room and your reached out to pet minjun’s hair but he swatted your hand away in annoyance.
“no seriously shortie. You’d be alone for a whole month. Even chelin is going home this time. you can spend some time with junie and he’d treat you to homemade food Is it tempting enough?” jungkook suggested.
“not that I’m any interested in the offer but I can teach you the Japanese you were talking about earlier.” At minjun’s comment, everyone raised their brows, silently questioning your new interest.
“what? You all are so nosy. My new roommate is always dissing me in Japanese and I can’t answer that fucker coz I don’t understand anything he spits out at me.”
“HE?” another group chant resonated.
“why is your roommate a man?” yugyeom added.
“because he was born a man!”
“haha very funny y/n l/n. what’s his name and is he from our university?”
“his name is nakamoto yuta and no, he’s not a student. And before you enquire, he’s home only for like few hours so you don’t need to worry him being a pervert or anything.”
“where is your new residence anyway?” you almost choked at yugyeom’s sudden interruption but it confirmed your suspicion that jungkook hadn’t revealed anything yet.
“instead of me, shouldn’t you love birds be worried about the unbearable separation that’d last for a whole month. How are you gonna cope with it gyeom? Especially when yeong is going to be in Incheon and you in busan, stuck with the sweaty sports team and jungkook, who’d be slapping with you with kisses every now and then, thinking you are min-
A shove of dumpling into your mouth caused you to inhale back all the words that were supposed to leave.
“if you don’t wanna meet, then atleast call him daily after your moon internship and he can also accompany you to busan if you want.”
The colour of the air faded at the mention. Slowly, you swallowed the piece in your mouth , instantly finding a distraction to lighten the mood.
“why are these so delicious?”
Rummaging through the empty boxes, jungkook found the pamphlet and shoved it in your face which you curled into a ball and threw towards minjun, hitting him right in the face.
“yaa jun. keep it safe. We’ll order while watching movies and take keys of this house from your boyfriend,” you ordered, pointing to jungkook, “and his Netflix password and his wallet and if he allows, his car ke-
“shut your mouth love-hater!” jungkook exclaimed while stuffing your mouth with two dumplings. And everyone else just laughed at your troubled state, silently agreeing with jungkook’s statement.
What a good day to be a foodie!
Tumblr media
Three days!
Taeil had granted you three days to de-stress yourself before you’d be joining your so called trainer for a self defence training program of two months. You wondered who could it be but it was definitely not the person you wished for! Johnny had been in france since two weeks, right from the day your exams started. He left his phone at home but he did contact you through a payphone to wish luck for exams. Since then, it’d been complete silence from the other end. You didn’t even know whether you really missed his presence or just the thought of being with someone who really showed some care for you.
eat, tv, sleep repeat seemed to be a very reasonable routine! your happiness had elevated when you saw a notification of chois about a job opening. Though you wanted to start from an internship in the main office but a moderate salary job as an assistant researcher of a junior lawyer wasn’t so bad as well!
no. actually it was awful seeing how much over-qualified you were for this job but with all the diminishing digits in your wallet, there was some significant scope for the bargain in your situation. But you still had to wait for 2 weeks for the acceptance of your application that would take you a step closer to your dream. Just two more weeks!
Is he still alive, you thought before leaving the kitchen, ready to finish the homemade meal.
High on a happy chemical , you cooked yourself ramyeon and eggs and completed your fancy dinner with a bottle of coke.
While slipping out of the kitchen , your eyes fell on the clean sink reminding you of the presence that you hadn’t felt since the last week.
Tumblr media
“I’ll accompany jeno. We’ll be done in two minutes” yuta proposed with a lopsided grin.
The place was more livelier with yuta’s return. Not that he wasn’t already present, but the day he returned to his usual routine was when everyone got their sunshine back. He acted like nothing has changed but still noone could ignore his overcautiousness. He was engaging too much as if to make up for the lost time and not that anyone objected for they were happy to see the old yuta with old ways. Just something was odd!
While most of them were oblivious, others understood what he was hiding behind that façade. They had noticed how he took late night activities just to avoid being sent home or how he took jaehyun and mark with him to avoid any interaction with you.
But the most irksome was how day by day,he was drifting apart from taeyong.
Tumblr media
“do you wanna take him home?” taeil snapped his fingers in front of your eyes as you registered his words. You were looking or shamelessly staring at the face of the man. He was dangerously tall as compared to you but his face was shining brighter than the sun itself. Your head snapped towards him again as taeil went on,
“don’t stare like you are gonna eat him y/n.” jungwoo eyes were dancing in the whole room as he avoided your curious ones. You didn’t mean to be creepy but you were having a hard time believing that the man sitting in front of you was a street fight champ and a former drug lord’s son. He seemed too….human.
“who’s staring?” you feigned innocence, looking at taeil.
“way to go advocate!” he said before continuing , “as I told you, jungwoo is a trained fighter, assassin and has a strong grip on pistols. Seeing what you can carry, a pistol is best for you. and jungwoo is a softie here so he won’t even give you a scratch during the training. But you have to actually listen to him or I’ll assign someone that won’t go easy on you.
“like?”
“like ten or jeno, they both don’t have any control over where they are hitting once they start so either you can cooperate with jungwoo or be ready to break some of your limbs.”
“how subtle taeil. but I can work with him.” you smiled at jungwoo which was returned with a shy one.
“okay then. Take care of each other and if you need anything then I’m not home.” Ad with a wave , he was gone.
“what do you wanna start with?” jungwoo asked in a small voice.
“you are teacher so whatever you say.”
“okay them. we’ll start with grip practice.” He got up, signalling you to follow him.
You ended up in a small part of the basement. It was divided into two sections with a glass used as the separation. Raw grass kind hard padding was attached to the walls on the both sides. On the other side of the wall were pasted two targets looking like giant sized dart boards that you suppose were for the practice.
While you were glancing around, jungwoo came back with a small metal box. He opened it to reveal a matt black pistol that looked even smaller when he held it.
“you can’t start with a semi-auto one just yet so for basics this is good for you. though I’m here but please don’t drop it. it belongs to taeyong hyung and he doesn’t know it’s here so please don’t mention it either.” He pleaded in a soft voice to which you found yourself nodding, copying his motion.
“so , you don’t need to memorise every part of a pistol but remember the few terms so if you ever held a new gun or pistol, someone can instruct you as to the handling of it.” you kept nodded as he went on,
“this is the exposed barrel, slide stop, safety lever , trigger and trigger guard and the most important magazine, if its empty ,your body would become the home of enemy bullets. Try clicking the safety lever!”
You did as he instructed. For about thirty minutes, he taught about pulling the barrel that drained your wrists of all the strength they had. He let you go only when he was sure you won’t forget the basics, atleast not until tomorrow.
Tumblr media
You hadn’t felt this exhausted in your life as much as you did in the last week. If Thesis research and jungwoo’s lessons were not enough then minjun’s new found love of photography was surely doing its work on your body. Who knew holding flowers and leaves for aesthetic photos was so much draining! And the time you were alone at home was spent sleeping and that too only if yuta and his gang were not screeching out their lungs, fighting with someone online with no regard for the well-being of others in the house. You knew he was aware of his actions but with zero communication, even you didn’t bother pointing him out.
But when had avoidance created peace!
Tumblr media
12:30 p.m
As you flipped the glossy leaves of the photo album, the three humans behind that transparent film seemed to come alive, albeit in your memories. Pausing at every page, you tried to live those moments once again ,just like every year. Though you and that photo album were bound by a thread of sadness, the memories it contained made you feel immense joy that was incomparable for you.
The small album was the only memory that reminded you of the family you had once! and today was the day you’ll go to meet them again.
Busan was not that far away but the location of the graveyard added a whole hour to the already 3 hour long journey. You were supposed to meet your orphan warden at the station directly and like every year she'd be accompanying you to Busan so you could meet them. Even though you were a grown-up now , she didn't had the heart to let you go alone. So it had became a tradition.
After memorizing every picture, you got up to get ready for the long journey. Taeil had excused you for this weekend so there were no worries from his side. you rotated the doorknob to open but it didn’t budge.
You shoved your body against the door but nothing happned! Though you didn't want to rely , there was only one option left!
"yuta!" You shouted in a hope that his lazy ass would respond but silence replied instead.
"yuta! Can you hear me. I'm locked!" You tried again, both shouting and trying the knob, banged the door but none worked in your favour.
Then realisation dawned on you! Why won't he hear anything when he was right outside the room! because he didn't want to!
"yuta I swear I'm gonna kill you! let me out!"
Raking your hands through your hair, you decided to find your phone but it looked like the whole universe was conspiring against you as the phone was not in the room. you had probably left it on the kitchen counter earlier. The only communication you had was with yuta and he was not listening to you , delibrately!
Your fist met the door with all the power you could muster but only the echo was heard which fainted within few seconds.
"fuck you yuta" you mumbled dejectedly before throwing yourself on the mattress. Contempt filled your heart as you watched the fan moving endlessly and your mind grasped the reality that maybe you won't be visiting them. Not if he didn't open the door. But he couldn't lock you for years!
And whenever that door opens , you'll make sure to close it forever.
Tumblr media
"eat slugs , haechan!" Yuta exclaimed into the microphone, killing another of haechan's Avatar in the game. He winced as haechan groaned loudly, trying to get some pity out of yuta.
Calling it a day, he teared the headphones away , the sudden silence bringing peace to his ears. Stretching his limbs, he got up but as he trudged for the kitchen, he heard a knock that didn't come from the front door.
He stopped abruptly as if to check if his mind was playing games on him but he heard it again, this time a fainted one.
His stopped in front of your room and slapped his hand against the door , checking his suspicious. Another fast and hard bang came in response and he rotated the knob to open but nothing happened. Forcing his body against the door, a metal dropping sound reached him before the door opened. Without even glancing at you, he leaned and picked up the screws that were stuck in the door hinges. But before he could show you those, you pushed him backward, releasing all the anger at once.
"what the fuck is wrong with you!" Not paying any attention to any of his words, you searched for your phone that you found on the counter and shot your warden an apologetic message. The orphan was near the station so you were sure she won't have waited for more than thirty minutes but you knew she'd have been worried for you.
Quickly working , you called taeyong while running for the main door, a confused yuta following you.
"you are home taeyong?" You asked him while wearing your shoes and exited , ignoring yuta's perplexed questions.
Yuta stood in the doorway, contemplating what the heck he had witnessed!
Tumblr media
18:30
Taeyong jerked forward on his chair as you slammed open the door of his office and marched in. When you called earlier , he thought you were going to complain about something that yuta did but the heat of the anger radiating through your body was enough to burn his senses from a distance.
"sit and calm-
"I'm not here to witness your hospitality Lee taeyong. Relieve me of the agreement here and now. my way or your way! I don't wanna live under the same roof wi-
"why are you shouting so much?" Jaehyun interrupted ,entering the room in a swift motion. Following him were few others who might have been awakened by your outburst.
"shut up jaehyun! For once do something with your worthless life" you spit out, eyes boring into jaehyun's.
"can you atleast tell me what has happened!"
To answer taeyong , you moved forward, resting your hands on the head of a chair continued,
"yuta locked me today. My phone was outside in the kitchen. I shouted , pleaded but he didn't open the door for 5 hours. I was supposed to go to Busan but that motherfucker don't ha-
"Busan? Your hometown?" Taeyong disrupted your speech,
"f-for my parents' death anniversary! I was suppose to visit their graves like every year.b-but he chose today of all days to play his little revenge games on me." With broken voice and tears threatening to spill, you managed to proceed,
"i don't wanna live with him anymore. I didn't sign up for this torture. Kill me for all you want but don't try to convince me into staying with that bastard!" Your nails holed into the leather chair, creating small crescents on the surface.
Uncomfortable silence fell over the whole room . As you turned around to leave, you were met with yuta's figure. His hand motioned to reach you but you closed the distance before he could.
"i hope you enjoyed it today!" With venom laced words, you finalised your proposition by flinging the ring straight into his face, his face scrunching at the hit , before walking past him.
"hyun-
Before taeyong could complete, taeil was already was on your heels.
"why do you have to be an asshole yuta?"
" i didn't do anything!" He started as he picked up the ring from the floor, “the door was ja-
“you shouldn’t have stooped so low nakamoto yuta!” tayeong growled with eyes glistening with fire.
“what now?” yuta’s jaw clenched at jaehyun’s nonchalant words. Pocketing his annoyance for him, he opened his mouth to explain himself,
“nothing now ok! I did nothing.i didn’t lock her and certainly didn’t try to forbid from going anywhere. She wa- the door was jammed due to some loose screws. I had to push it so it’d open. I-i-I wasn’t even aware of her plans. Heck, you can ask hyuck. I was playing with him for 6 hours straight. I had headphones in my ears all that time and you know how much hyuck yells. Even if she was stuck, there was not a sound that reached me taeyong. I was as oblivious to all this as much as you all were till now and knowingly, I won’t ever do anything so harsh. You know me very well! don’t you?” he ended with a hopeful question glancing at everyone in the room. With each passing second, his anxiousness elevated at the silent and calculating faces of everyone.
“you don’t believe me, do you?” his broken voice resembled the one they just heard few minutes ago.
“no yuta.i-its not like that . message taeil hyung about all this so he can calm her down.” Taeyong muttered with eyes searching up yuta’s for any malice he might be planning but found nothing. he was innocent.
But yuta panicked at his words, “why? I can explain by myself. It’s not that difficult. I can handle her taeyong.” he turned for the door but taeyong’s words stopped him in his tracks.
“you think so! You should be glad you are alive yuta”
“then release us taeyong. I’m begging you, LET HER GO!” the shout that echoed was enough to send shivers through every living being in the vicinity.
“I will. If taeil hyung say so. Message him yuta and you should know I don’t repeat my words without expense!”
He did as told, head hung low to avoid the pity looks that were thrown his way!
Tumblr media
“don’t follow me taeil!”
“I’ll stop if you’ll stop!” taeil politely replied, tracking your steps on the sidewalk. He tried to obstruct your way but ended up following you instead. 15 minutes had passed since you both left the house but your anger was not simmering down and you were stunned at his patience.
“you can’t walk till university.” You deadpanned.
“neither can you.”
Stopping abruptly, you faced him, “you can’t stop me taeil.”
“I won’t. but the bus driver would. Even pretty girls don’t get a free ride home.” You groaned at his unnecessarily true words. He was right, you had nothing on you except for the phone.
He silently observed your slumping body, before walking a step closer to check the waters. When you didn’t push him away, he lightly took your hand in his, tugging you to come along.
“I don’t wanna go with you.” your hushed voice gave him some courage to proceed further,
“we aren’t going home. Lets just sit”
He dragged you to the park you had passed just five minutes ago. Sitting on the bench , he asked you to explain everything that had happened in the last 6 hours. You recited the whole story till the end where you threw the ring at yuta. Taeil only hummed in response when he heard a buzz from his phone.
Reading yuta’s message , he suddenly knew where to start!
“read this y/n.” he said before giving you the phone.
You absorbed each and every word written. It made sense. But did it?
“he’s lying.” You scoffed , returning the phone.
“he’s not.”
“ofcourse you’ll take his side.”
“and why would I do that?”
“he’s your brother”
“and you are my sister”
“no I’m not. I never would be.” You retorted, hiding the effect his words had on you.
“I might not be your brother but you can’t stop me from calling you my sister and I’d prefer you over yuta anyday.”
“but you still think I’m lying and he’s right”
Taeil massaged the back of his neck, clearly getting annoyed by your snapping.
“when did I say you are lying? I just said he’s not lying.”
“isn’t it the same thing?”
“no its clearly not. You just don’t wanna admit that you misunderstood!”
Uncrossing your legs, you faced him, “ because I am not in the wrong here. he is ! he did it so he can have the house all to himself while I’m locked. The truth is he hates my guts. He wont ever pass an opportunity against me!”
“and like you love his guts! Your hatred for him is the reason that you don’t wanna believe he’s innocent. Your heart wants to believe that everything that had unfolded after that night is yuta’s fault. You don’t wanna believe because you just don’t want to! You are rejecting his reason because your mind says its the perfect chance to break taeyong! your anger and emotions are playing games with you and you are letting them! and this is exactly what yuta had been doing from the very first day! He’s no different than you. No matter how much you discard it, the truth won’t change! Impulsive actions lead you nowhere!” His polite yet authoritative voice was providing inputs that you didn’t want to believe. Not yet.
“I just wanted to go to busan taeil. If he hadn’t been home the-
“if he hadn’t been home , then you would not have even made it out! And I’m sure you have heard him playing games. He’s a loudspeaker and believe me haechan is yuta part two. I’m sure he didn’t hear you.”
“but why would anyone even care! I’m the one at loss here.”
“what loss. Just because you missed it today doesn’t mean you can’t go tomorrow and If you want i can take you there. we can go right now! But y/n , loved ones live in your heart!. You don’t need a day to show them your respect and love. They know you and they watch over you. don’t crumble under the weight of customs and rituals. We’ll go tomorrow morning. Be ready by 8 a.m !” his soothing voice managed to calm the storm but you weren’t going to budge from your first condition.
“I don’t wanna go back with him.”
He sighed heavily before pressing his phone to his ear,
“taeyong. replace yuta in france. For two months and I don’t want any further discussion.”
You sniffled, finally letting out the tears that were in the waiting since the morning.
“I can drop you to the dorm for tonight until he packs his stuff and you can go back home tomorrow. Sounds right?” he described his plan , petting your hair.
You weakly nodded, letting him ease your worries with sympathetic words that you didn’t even know you needed!
next morning
Uncomfortable silence welcomed you as you entered the house. You were told that he was gone and it sounded about right with the present atmosphere.
After finding the fruits, you made you way to the room but stopped in your tracks as you spotted something on the counter.
Three moulded screws were placed on a paper along with the ring that you thought would never be seen by you again. you breath quickened as you read the words on the plain paper
I’m sorry!
What were you supposed to do with it now?
“Y/N, are you awake?” Mallory asked.
I closed the book and peeked my head up from beneath the covers to look at her. Light attacked my eyes and I squinted for a brief moment, gathering the covers under my chin.
“Did you really need to switch on that light?” I sat up on the bed and blinked. “This one was doing its job just fine.” I pointed at the reading light next to me.
“You’ll grow wings and turn into a bat any day now.” She laughed, and I glowered. Turning into a bat could very well be a possibility. I hadn’t asked Dracula about that. There was a lot I hadn’t asked, and a lot that he probably wouldn’t tell me now. “A joke, Y/N. You still remember those?”
“Not sure I do,” I scoffed. “You look great. Are you going out with Sean?”
Mallory’s blonde locks laid in large curls around her shoulders – an hour of carefully applied curling iron, I’d say – and her makeup was soft in such a way that her eyes looked more almond shaped than round and innocent like they usually did. A beige trench coat covered her outfit but her legs were on display. Mallory favoured mini dresses so I presumed that was what she had on underneath.
“No, he’s being annoying, it’s just me and the girls. And don’t you change the subject. I don’t feel good about leaving you here.” She sighed. “You’re my guest and I’ll leave you here to go party? That’s not right, but if you come with… It’ll be fun, come on. I’ll wait for you if you go get ready. We’ll drink and dance, and maybe you’ll find someone else.”
Someone else to end up bitten by Count Dracula. Another lesson, like Mallory was, to remind me that I was his.
“No rebounds,” I muttered. “I’ll be fine. I don’t feel like dancing.” She frowned. “Mal, I’m incredibly thankful that you’re letting me stay here but you don’t have to feel like you need to cater to me. We lived together during uni. Don’t think of me as a guest, more like a flatmate, a very brief one. I’ll go back home in two days time”
Staying with Mallory was more her decision than mine. Days ago, she’d bought a last minute train ticket from Gloucester and returned with me to London when the Sun was still up in the sky. When the taxi dropped me off at my house, Mal asked the cabbie to wait and strolled up my stairs on weak knees and packed my bags for me, saying that I needed her. I simply watched as she threw my outfits and shoes inside a large suitcase. While I waited, listening to her go on about broken hearts and that’s what friends do, I’d noticed that my bedroom’s window was open; I didn’t remember leaving it like that. Maybe I was being paranoid but being paranoid was a better choice than being stupid and I’d afforded enough stupidity for a lifetime, so I let Mallory harbour me. Dracula had unlimited access to my house since I had invited him in and closed doors and windows were no hindrance to him, as he had proved. Mallory was my best bet of avoiding him and staying safe, for now, and I could keep an eye on her to make sure she would be truly okay.
Mallory acted like usual, her ramblings, her chipper attitude, her easy laughter at the silliest things. Mallory, as before. Mallory, my best friend from college. Mallory, who had a scar on the side of her neck just like mine and, therefore, wasn’t at all like before. All she’d asked me on the following day after the wedding was how we got all the way from Berkeley Castle to Gloucester and how much she had had to drink. As a test I’d asked how she’d gotten hurt and she looked at me, bewildered, and said “I got hurt?”. When Dracula told me she wouldn’t remember anything, I didn’t expect her to not remember a single thing. I’d prepared a lengthy explanation but threw it away in favour of Mal’s bite-induced amnesia. Even when I went to change the bandage on her neck, she barely acknowledged me and simply stared ahead with empty eyes. She didn’t seem to notice the bite when she looked in the mirror, but every day before leaving the house, without a fault, she wrapped a scarf around her neck as if covering it was instinctive. A useful little trick in Dracula’s sleeve, I presumed.
“Tomorrow marks ten days, right?” She asked and I nodded. She motioned for me to scoot over and flopped down on the bed. “Can I just say that it’s weird that he gave you an ultimatum?”
“I was the one who asked for time.”
“Still weird. I mean, it must have been a huge fight. You said he was massively pissed.” She trained her large eyes on me, like one of Diana’s cats did when it wanted food. “And I’ve never seen you like this, Y/N. I thought you’d open up if you stayed with me. You cried the whole trip back from Gloucester and now you won’t shed a tear. You won’t talk about him. You’re sulking, and you never sulk. For a day maybe, yeah, you’ll sulk and throw a pity party like you did when you broke up with Paul a few years back, but then you’ll make yourself busy.”
Back in Gloucester, during breakfast at my rented flat, Mal, with a wound on her throat and face as pale as her hair, insisted for me to tell her what had happened and why I couldn’t stop crying. I’d told her what I could: that I’d lied to him about something, he found out and did something terrible and wanted me to explain myself in 10 days.
“I don’t want to talk about it, Mal.”
“No, you never want to talk but that’s how you’ll heal. You’re on a rinse and repeat cycle of going to work, picking at your food, and then holing up in my guestroom with that poetry book. Where is it, by the way? Did you finally throw it away?”
I retrieved it from under the covers and set it on her lap. The book was warm to the touch. It slept with me, under the pillow or over my chest. Two days after the wedding, Mallory and I went to grab something to eat at a book cafe near our office. The cover, a large red rose overflowing from a jar as moths and butterflies decorated the edges, caught my eye and when I read the title announcing it to be a collection of Russian poetry, I instantly knew I had to have it. To find in those pages the tranquility I found inside Gloucester Cathedral; a moment in which I was wholly unreserved and Dracula had put his relentless pursuit of me on pause. A perfect memory in which I could have lived in forever.
“I thought you liked French poetry better,” Mallory said as she picked it up and opened it at random. “Why are you so obsessed with this book, anyway? Let’s see.” She took a deep breath and spit out the words on the page so fast that they barely sound like verses. “ I love you, I love you and as I rage at myself for this obsession, and as I make my shamed confession, despairing at your feet I lie, blah blah blah, my one reward for a day’s anguish comes when your, pale hand, love, I kiss. Okay, that part was nice.” She nodded in approval as her eyes skimmed down. “I dare not ask for love with all my many sins, both great and small, I am perhaps of love unworthy. God, that’s a bit depressing, isn’t it?”
“You found it!” The pages ruffled when I snatched the book from her hands.
“Found what?”
“But if feigned love, if you would pretend, you’d easily deceive me. For happily would I, believe me, deceive myself if but I could!” I completed as I read through the last lines. “You found it, Mal, you’re brilliant.”
“I just opened the book.” She shrugged. “Were you looking for this poem in particular?”
I nodded as I tried to read it from the start but my brain was foggy from sleep and the words weren’t making much sense.
“Oh my god,” Mal said and I looked up at her. “This has to do with Dracula, doesn’t it?”
“He recited it to me once. He told me it was Pushkin–”
“So you bought the book.” Mallory drew her eyebrows together.
“Well, I couldn’t remember the exact words to google them and I was curious– stop making that face.”
“What face?”
“The face you make when you watch Pride and Prejudice.”
She giggled.
“Your ten days are up tomorrow. What are you going to tell him?”
I closed the book and let it rest near my knee. “I don’t know what I’ll say,” I finally said in a shaky voice. “I really don’t.”
“Maybe if you tell me what happened, I can help.”
“I can’t tell you.”
“Can’t or won’t?”
“Both.”
The bond wouldn’t let me utter a word about the true issue surrounding the Count to her; I suspected the loophole I’d found with Renfield and Zoe was because they already had previous knowledge of Dracula’s nature.
Mallory took my hand.
“I wish you’d cry, at least I would know what to do.”
I squeezed her hand as my eyes fell on her neck. A crystal choker covered the bite. She should be the one crying because she didn’t remember, because she had a gash at her throat that she didn’t recognise and because a monster of a man had attacked her. I should be the one taking care of her, not the way around. That’s why I’d bargained with Count Dracula in the first place.
“I do cry but only when I wake up,” I confessed. “The tears just come out of nowhere as soon as I open my eyes and then dry up when I realise I’m awake.” My voice wobbled at the last word and I slapped the pillow next to me. “Oh, now they come. Shit.”
Mallory laughed at my frustration and made me lay my head on her lap. Tears fell in soft thuds to the duvet, running over my nose and eyes as Mallory smoothed my hair.
“It’ll be okay, lovey. He’ll understand if he likes you, whatever you did he’ll forgive–”
“He won’t, Mal.”
“He will, he’s gotta. I saw the way he looked at you.”
“Doesn’t mean anything. He was horrible. I don’t know how to begin to forgive him or if I can forgive him. He was nice to me and now I know that’s what mattered, that he was nice to me and only to me–” But he wasn’t nice just to me, he was also nice to Lucy. My chest constricted. “I don’t know if any of it was real or that he actually cares that he hurt yo– me,” I corrected. “He wants me as one wants precious jewels but that’s all it is. He wants to possess me.” The words were strung together between sobs. I barely understood myself so I knew Mal didn’t either but she still rubbed my shoulder to soothe me. “Why am I crying now? I’m done with crying and I don’t want to.”
I slammed a hand on the bed again but instead of the soft duvet, I found the book’s hard surface, and it hit me why I was crying.
From the moment I bought the book, I held onto it as if my life depended on it, skimming through pages during work breaks, sneaking glances at it during lunch, reading it faithfully yet slowly so it wouldn’t end too fast in search of that Pushkin stanza. I’d buried myself in Russian poetry, those biting words that hung on the edge of everyone’s lips, unsaid but that rang true, so I wouldn’t have to dwell on what to say. Perhaps those words would become mine and I wouldn’t have to say anything, not now or ever, and by some magic Dracula would understand. Then Mallory found the verses and I realised I still didn’t have the words. What did I have left to hold onto now that I didn’t need to search for Pushkin’s poem? The sweetness I searched for amidst the sting of my bitterness was gone and that moment in the cathedral wasn’t worth anything if Dracula killed me tomorrow.
Ten days wasted on poetry and in a moment that I would never have again. I wasn’t even sure if my voice would work when I tried explaining it to him. All I had planned was that I would tell him somewhere public in the hope that he still had enough scruples left to not kill me in front of witnesses.
“Diana called your phone when you were sleeping,” Mallory informed me as my sobs subsided. “Taking naps all afternoon and sleeping early won’t help you come up with an answer, you know.”
“It’s the only time when I don’t have to think about him.”
“You don’t dream about him?” She stopped playing with my hair for a second when I nodded and I felt a tug on a lock of hair. The slight resistance told me she was braiding my hair.
“Just once since the wedding. I dreamt that he was driving and we were holding hands but then–” my hand was nearly crushed in his grip as he raised it to his mouth and tore my wrist open. Blood trickled down to his lap and a scarlet jet stained the windows. I smiled the whole time as he consumed me. “It wasn’t a good dream. Did you get Diana’s call?”
“Yeah. She’s worried about you, told me you only answered one of her calls since you came to stay with me. You have over 10 calls from your cousin, too.”
“My cousin?”
“Yeah, don’t you have a cousin in Manchester named Zoe?”
“Oh, uh, yeah.” I hadn’t spoken with my cousin for over two years and her number was saved only as ‘Zee’. “Did Zoe call when I was asleep?” I asked in a neutral tone. I ignored every call from Dr. Van Helsing and if Mallory had answered the phone thinking she was talking to my cousin–
“No, but she must be worried about you. Give her a call back,” she said.
“I will,” I breathed, relieved. Eventually, I would talk to Zoe and tell her that I was done with her – that is, if I survived Count Dracula. With that, rose the question of why Zoe was still alive. Wouldn’t Dracula have killed her?
“Diana said she’s going up to Glasgow for work in a couple of days and that she wants to see you before that. I told her we could all grab lunch Thursday.”
“All right.” I sniffled and started getting up slowly so Mallory wouldn’t accidentally pull my hair. “I’m getting in the way of your night out, Mal.”
“Did you actually think I was going out?” She looked at me in disbelief. “It’s Monday, Y/N, we have work tomorrow. More importantly, I would never leave you here and go drinking.” I frowned as I gestured at her made up face. “I’m wearing PJ’s under my coat. I got ready in the hopes that you would suddenly change your mind when you saw me leaving the house and decide to actually move your arse out of bed,” she explained. I snorted. “A-ha, that was a near laugh!”
“That was a shit strategy. And you knew it wouldn’t work since you didn’t bother to change clothes.”
“Well, I tried everything else.” She jumped out of bed and peeled off the trench coat, revealing butterfly print pyjamas. “Come to the living room. We’ll order hamburgers and watch something.”
She was already leaving the room as I slipped out from under the covers.
“No rom-coms!”
“I wouldn’t torture you like that!” She yelled back from the living room. “Is Harry Potter good enough for you?”
“Great.”
It was familiar enough for me to repeat the lines in sync with the character and keep me distracted. Tomorrow I would figure out how to tell Count Dracula. As I made the bed, I grabbed the book from under the pillow and fingered through the pages. Pushkin’s words didn’t jump out at me and I hadn’t memorised the page number when Mallory found it. For the best, probably.
I set the book aside and went to the living room when Mal called my name.
__________________________________________________________
“L/N, can I see you before you go?”
Talbot’s voice made Mallory and I stop on the way to the lift; my mobile chimed inside my purse and my fingers tightened around the purse’s strap. Another chime reached my ears as I turned back to meet Talbot with Mal on my heels. Whether she had followed me because a partner was summoning me and it was a good opportunity for her to be noticed or because she was fairly acquainted with my phone’s chimes and particularly what they meant today, I didn’t know, but I was glad to have her at my side anyway.
Golden orange sunlight refracting through a window hit my face when I stopped before Talbot and I forced myself to breathe properly. I still had a couple more minutes, an hour if I was being optimistic, before the sun went down and I had to meet Dracula, who didn’t seem to pay much attention to it; he had been texting me since four in the afternoon.
“Yes?” The word was strangled.
Talbot’s severe face didn’t seem to notice my anxious tone and simply nodded at Mallory before settling his cataract ridden eyes on me.
“Do you have anything on your schedule tomorrow at 3pm?”
“No, I don’t think I do, sir. Why?”
“I need you in court.” He handed me a thick manila folder he had hidden behind his back.
“A new case?” I took the file automatically. “But sir, I’m already flooded with them. And court tomorrow? I won’t have the time to prepare–”
“Of course you’ll have time to prepare. You’ll have the rest of the day and night, and tomorrow until three. Pulling all-nighters is part of every good attorney’s job.”
I smothered an offended huff.
“I’m aware, sir.” I paused, and my phone chimed again. I could feel my pulse on my throat. “Unfortunately, I have a commitment tonight and I can’t take this case. Mallory will gladly take it in my pla–”
“I’m sure Miss Nowak would do a wonderful job,” he considered her briefly “but this case can only be taken care of by you. It was originally Miss Grisham’s, your colleague, but she had to go under an emergency surgery yesterday – wicked things, spleens, don’t you think? – and the Judge on this case refused to reschedule a court date.” He scoffed. “Apparently, Grisham had already been granted several reschedules and Judge Llewellyn won’t have it again, which is precisely why this case must be yours. As I understand you have a win inside Llewellyn’s courtroom, which might bode well for you– for us at the firm. Llewellyn is notoriously a difficult man and I hear he’s been mouthing good things about you. No one in this office has ever won before him, except for you and Renfield.”
My phone started ringing loudly and I gave my purse a thwack as if that would shut it up. Talbot eyed my purse.
“Sir, like I said, I have a personal engagement that I can’t dismiss. It’s best that I don’t take a new case. Give it to Mallory, she’ll do as good a job as I would and then this firm will have three lawyers with wins before Llewellyn.”
A new case meant I would have to prepare an opening statement, not to say I would have to spend countless hours studying every small detail to not be stomped to the ground by the prosecutor. The remaining sunlight only gave me a few more minutes to work out my own closing statement – the very last closing statement I would do in my life, perhaps, considering it was entirely dependent on Count Dracula’s verdict – if I took that case I would have to neglect it in favour of my own troubles.
“You’ll take it.”
“Sir, I can’t–”
“Don’t be ridiculous, L/N,” argued Talbot. “If your engagement has anything to do with your phone’s incessant noise–” as if by command, the tune stopped “–then turn it off. Whatever it is, it can be rescheduled. This case cannot.”
Rage built up my chest; I could swallow it down before it reached my throat but the lump there wouldn’t let it pass as easily as it would allow it to burst out. And I didn’t want to swallow it down so more rage could merge with heartache. I’d had enough with rage and I wouldn’t let Talbot bully me into something that I couldn’t do in the benefit of his own interests.
“Any lawyer here would be happy to do it. I can’t,” I said as I offered him the file back. He opened his mouth to protest and didn’t accept the manila folder. “You don’t understand, you absolute c–”
“She’ll take it,” Mallory intervened, squeezing my arm and interrupting whatever name I was about to call him. One of Talbot’s eyes twitched as he evaluated me and he rose his chin, nodding at Mal for the interruption.
“I see Nowak has managed to keep her sense. I hope she’ll teach you some.” He gestured towards the lift. “You may go. Do not disappoint me, L/N.” He turned on his heel and disappeared inside his office.
I started stalking after him, picturing his outraged face when I threw the file on his desk, but Mal jerked me back.
“Are you crazy?” She shook me. “You almost called a partner the c-word–”
“You can say he’s a cunt, it’s not like it’s a lie.”
“Y/N!” She exclaimed, looking around us as if to check if anyone had heard that. “Being angry won’t solve your crap, and you can’t just shrug off work because of a relationship. Focus. Dracula is just a guy but this is your job. If he’s right for you he’ll understand.  It’s not like he’ll die if he waits one more day so you two can talk.”
I stared out the window. My phone chimed, and then started ringing. The sun was still up and I wagered it would stay that way until I went home. As soon as it was dark, Dracula would be there. I could propose a meeting spot but I’d made enough demands – he had said so himself. He was done making concessions for me, and if I said one thing, one thing that didn’t please him, that sounded off to his ears, he would probably tear open my neck and leave me to die by myself on the quietness of my home. There were plenty of things in my speech that needed adjustments to prevent that, several things, actually, that I wasn’t sure I had worded properly. And I hadn’t rehearsed anything, either.
“You know you’re not mad at Talbot,” Mallory said, as though she knew I was pondering the situation. “Dracula will understand.”
My phone stopped ringing and then started shortly after.
“He won’t stop calling until I answer him,” I said. But I’d already made my decision. I’d made it the moment Mallory said I would take the case.
“Then turn off your phone. You’ll concentrate better. I’ll even help you,” she offered. I glanced at her. “I can see in your face that you’re dreading going home. You can stay at my house one more night, or how many more you want, and I’ll help you study your case. You’ll worry about Dracula tomorrow after the court session with Llewellyn , okay?”
Working this case was a perfectly reasonable excuse not to answer his calls and texts. It was good enough for me but I knew it wouldn’t be good enough for Dracula. It would give me more time to work on what to say, although I had the feeling that nothing I said would ever be good enough for him.
What did matter if he had to wait one more day? I was dead anyway.
“Okay,” I finally said. Mal smiled at me. I didn’t have the strength to retribute it.
“Text him and say you’ll see him tomorrow.”
I fished my phone out of my purse. The name ‘Count Dracula’ blinking on the screen made me frown. I pressed the button next to the screen until it went fully black.
“My phone battery is dead for all he cares.” I dumped the phone back in my purse. “Let’s go, Mal. Quickly. He’ll come here looking for me when he realises I’m not picking up.”
______________________________________________________________
Count Dracula tilted his head as he watched the man crawl between tables, shoulders clumsily bumping into a table leg as he tried to hide. Sobs escaped his mouth. Dracula pushed one of the bodies at his feet with the heel of his shoe as the man shrunk into the darkness beneath the table. The man’s ragged breathing made the Count’s bloodstained lips twitch. He made a show of looking around the blackened interior of the pub, putting weight into his strides so the floorboards would creak as he stepped over another body, pretending that he couldn’t see him in his hiding place.
This game of hide-and-seek never failed to amuse the Count but it wasn’t as fun in an enclosed space such as this. It made him miss his castle. If it was his castle, he would throw the man into one of the dungeon’s cells to play with him another moment. But here, in a London pub where he had already engorged himself until his cheeks were ruddy, he only had so much time before sunrise. He wasn’t thirsty anymore and he would have to go home soon to rest his head again, only to be assailed by dreams of Y/N.
“I won’t hurt you,” Dracula declared, throwing his head back. The low ceiling had beer stains. The cleaning staff, the one dead at his feet, must not do a very good job of cleaning the place. “You can come out.”
A whimper came from under the table but the man made no attempt to reveal himself. Dracula waited for a few seconds to give him a chance and then crossed the distance between them and lifted the table. Wide brown eyes filled with mindless fear stared up at Count Dracula in a skinny face.
“Get up,” the Count demanded and discarded the table to the side, leaving the man without his illusion of protection. “Come sit with me.” He took a seat at a table at the centre of the pub and snatched a napkin from it. Red gloves of blood left stains on every white napkin he touched. The man – boy, from the looks of him – just watched and Dracula flicked dark eyes toward him. “Now.”
Slowly, so very slowly, the boy stood up and took small steps toward the table. He threatened to snap in half like a twig from all his shaking. Count Dracula motioned for him to take a seat as he wiped his face and hands with napkins. The boy sat.
“I think…” Dracula began. “No. What would you do in my place?”
“W-what?”
“I gave her ten days. Today is Tuesday, the tenth day, and she wasn’t at her house. She won’t answer my calls and my texts. She was at her office today but left early according to–” what was the woman’s name? Caroline? Christine? Camille? Ah, Chelsea. She’d slipped him her number before he left the office at Canary Wharf. He would have considered keeping it, if only to feed from her, but Y/N wouldn’t like that. Ten days could stretch into twenty or a month if he fed from Chelsea. “She’s avoiding me. What would you do?”
The boy stared at him, mouth opening and closing several times as he tried to formulate an answer. He glanced at the parade of dead bodies around them and then back at Count Dracula.
“Um, who is– hm. W-why is she av-voiding you?”
Dracula nodded, smiling lightly. He was impressed that the boy had managed to restrain his fear for a while but he knew very well the boy was merely entertaining him until he started bargaining for his life. They always did.
“I did something,” said Dracula.
“This kind of something?” He gestured with his head toward the body closest to them and then his face turned red and shuddered.
“No. He frowned. “Worse, I think. I don’t know, to be perfectly honest. What matters is that she’s avoiding me. I gave her ten days and she said we would talk. She said she knew not to flee. I can hunt for her but–” He threw the used napkins on the table, giving up on making himself presentable. There wasn’t any point to it with six bodies strewn metres away from him. “I don’t want to hunt what’s mine. She should come willingly.”
“Yeah,” the boy drew out. “But maybe she needs more time? I don’t know what you did, man, but if it was worse than this–”
“I bit her friend,” Dracula admitted.
The boy gaped.
“I– I’m sure you had a good reason to.”
“Are you?”
“I only mean–” he said, hunching his shoulders. “I mean, I… I don’t know?”
Count Dracula tipped in his chair and balanced himself so he could lever his feet on the table and cross them. Black leather shoes with small rounded dents at the tips shone at him. He hadn’t worn another pair since the wedding, when Y/N’s heels left those prints there. He didn’t know what that meant. He only knew that he couldn’t remember Y/N’s smile with the same clarity that he could remember her face stricken with black tears.
“Did she cheat on you?” The boy tried.
Dracula laughed mirthlessly.
“In a manner, but she assured me that she had stopped.”
“So, uh, why did you kill her friend?”
“I didn’t kill Mallory. I bit her, that’s all.” He’d bitten her without Y/N’s explanation, which he still didn’t have. “Do you think I exaggerated?”
“Um– uh, no?”
“I don’t like liars.”
“I’m sorry. Sorry.” The boy rubbed his nose. “My name is Trent.” Dracula’s eyebrows furrowed as he tried to understand the relevance of that. “I’m only 19. I live in Whitechapel with my parents and sisters. I’ve got three cats–”
“Why are you telling me this?” Dracula glared at him. And then chuckled. “Oh, are you attempting to sensitize me about who you are so I won’t kill you? I’ve seen that on TV. People have been using that trick for centuries, too. It’s never worked on me. In fact, I think it’s kind of fun. First name basis is important, isn’t it? Makes things more intimate when I kill you.” He bared his teeth at the boy in a grin. “I asked you a question, Trent.”
“You said you wouldn’t hurt me.”
The words echoed. Y/N had said the same. Dracula massaged the bridge of his nose.
“I changed my mind. Maybe it’ll change again if you answer me.”
Trent shook violently again and started rocking back and forth in his seat.
“I forgot what you asked me.”
“Do you think I exaggerated?” Dracula repeated. The boy looked around them. “Not about this. I know you might believe this is a bit much but it helps me not to think. However, I’m in need of a good talk now. So amuse me, Trent. Do you think I shouldn’t have bitten Mallory?”
“Uh. This other girl you've been talking about… Do you fancy her?” Trent’s thin eyebrows arched, trying to summon a serious expression. Dracula merely bobbed his head. “And you said she’s, huh, yours.” He looked at Dracula and he nodded again. “From what you’re telling me, you want her back. If she’s avoiding you, maybe she’s scared?” His eyes widened as if he realised he’d said something wrong. “Or, or, or! Or maybe she’s waiting for an apology?” He shrugged. “Did you try talking to her, eh, before you bit this Mallory bird?”
The Count ignored the last question.
“She owes me an apology.”
“Yeah, sure she does,” the boy agreed. “But don’t you think you oughta apologise, too? I mean… uh. I don’t know. I’ve never been cheated on but I don’t think biting someone is the right way to go about it.”
Maybe not.
Maybe if he had asked Y/N about it, he wouldn’t have to wait ten days to speak to her. If he had, she wouldn’t have cried. It could have been a terribly simple explanation and she would have kissed him again. Maybe he wouldn’t have gone on a murder rampage for the last days to keep memories of Y/N from permeating his every dream and thought.
Or, and it was just as likely, it wasn’t simple at all. She had learnt how to lie to him. He was certain that she could have lied about everything. It could all have been an act to fool him – the sudden interest in the taste of blood, her questions about his life before a vampire and after, her rare ability to see through him sometimes, the gleam in her eyes at the cathedral… The kiss. But the utter betrayal in her face, the acrid smell of fear, how her voice trembled as she wept, those weren’t false. When she said yes to him, covered in her friend’s blood with her dress ruined and hair in shambles, he knew she had spoken the truth. She had no other reason to lie after what he had done. And now, he found himself doubting if everything else was not all lies.
It didn’t matter.
He had destroyed it. And he knew that if he could go back in time to fix it, he would have done it all the same. She confused him. She had made a fool out of him like no one else had in half a millennia, and she would make a fool out of him for the next millennia as well. Despite what she had done, she was his, whether she liked it or not. He was willing to wait a few more days for her to come to him.
Count Dracula massaged the bridge of his nose again.
“Thank you, Trent.”
The boy’s heart drummed, his blood streaming inside of him in rapid currents. Dracula could hear the noise it made, like a wind howl against a window.
“Are you gonna let me go?”
“Yes, I will.” He flashed the boy a quick smile. “Although you haven’t been much help, I’m feeling merciful right now.” Trent exhaled a shaky breath and started getting up. “One last thing” – the boy looked up at that, watery brown eyes filled with alarm again – “you didn’t say… what would you do in my place?”
“Uhh–” he paused, panic flaring up and making the drumming in Dracula’s ears become louder. “Show that you care? Apologise if you want her back. She’ll apologise, too.” Dracula just stared. “Or do something nice for her. Especially nice.” Trent sniffled. “That’s what my dad does when my mum is mad at him, and it works.”
Trent waited as Dracula nodded, and then started shuffling across the pub in a slow pace as if he was doing his best not to draw attention.
He eyed the dents on his shoes and felt Y/N’s lips on his. He couldn’t wait five or ten years to feel them again and in order to have that, he would have to make amends. But then he thought of all the lies again and the taste of Mallory’s blood pouring down his throat and all the memories that came with it. A pungent reminder of how unreasonable he had become since meeting Y/N.
Trent was almost at the exit door.
“On second thought!” He called, planting both feet on the slippery red floor. The boy turned around to look at him and Count Dracula bared sharp teeth as he stood up from his seat. “I feel like having dessert.”
The boy ran.
His fingers brushed the doorknob but didn’t manage to grip it. Dracula blocked the way. Trent squealed and his entire body trembled in such force that the Count thought he could hear his bones rattling. He smiled at that and grabbed the boy’s shoulder to stop him from scuttling away.
Trent was as pale as a sheet, so much so that it was difficult to make out defining features on his face, but the shapeless, quivering thing on his face was most definitely a bottom lip moving as his teeth chattered.
“Ah, don’t be like that. I’ll make it quick, as a thanks.” Dracula stroked the boy’s cheek, pointed nails grazing the skin, and he shuddered. “Truly, you gave me quite the idea. But you see, it’s almost dawn, and I need a last bedtime snack to clear my head. You just so happen to be nearby.”
“Please, I–”
“No, no, no, no. Begging won’t get you anywhere and I’ve heard enough of ‘please’ tonight. I’ll make it quick and you won’t beg. Are we agreed?” He cocked an eyebrow. Trent shut his eyes and nodded. Dracula patted his face. “Good boy.”
Dracula turned Trent’s face to the side. He was met with no resistance as he lowered his head to tear through the soft flesh on the boy’s neck. Trent stopped trembling as Dracula’s teeth slashed deep and blood flowed inside his mouth. Memories started materialising but he ignored it and allowed himself to be swept away until nothing else invaded his mind except the taste of blood, its warmth cascading over his body and leaving him no choice but to be inundated with unrestrained elation.
He swallowed hurriedly and, in no time, the flow became sluggish and he began taking it less urgently. If he drank too fast, he would miss it. He waited for it to come as one waits for the first rain to pour, waits for it to wash remains, and to bring restoration. Ecstasy flitted across his deepest thoughts only to be replaced with perfect numbness. Sublime anesthesia and a brief glimpse into the true death he would never feel.
The emptiness he sought, the complete erasure of all thoughts, was the one thing that brought him relief and wiped the image of Y/N’s face. Her rancour and her grief that turned those eyes cruel to cut through him when she saw him with Mallory but, worst of all, the resignation that made her voice docile, almost cowed when she begged him for time. It touched something in him. Something that made him desperate to get rid of it, so abnormal was this sensation, that his only solution was to engorge himself with blood.
Only she had this effect on him. Usually he was picky with his food, choosing when should each dish be savoured and in which order. All it took for that to change was for Y/N to look him in the eye at the Victoria and Albert Museum and say that taking her there was the nicest thing someone had ever done for her. And he simply couldn’t understand that, couldn’t understand he had enjoyed knowing that, that he had enjoyed making her happy, and that he was possibly growing infatuated by her. Not in the way he had grown attached to Agatha or Johnny. It was entirely different; a foreign feeling. It had driven him to feast on a board of directors in an attempt to obliterate the memory. And it had worked for a little while but each time she managed to pull at his control until he wasn’t sure if he had any control whatsoever.
Dracula dropped Trent’s lifeless body.
The anesthesia had faded and here he was, thinking of Y/N again.
He groaned in frustration, wiped his chin and left the darkened pub with its new decor of blood carpets and artfully painted walls.
Glow Pt 2
Summary: Malachai/Reader Request: Glow Pt 2; this got a little out of hand
“So; should we get dinner?” You turn to Malachai your hand tracing his chest and the faint glow from it. “Hmm, well we should; but..” You smile and he looks over to you fondly. “But what?” “As my soulmate you’re meant to be my perfect fit; we’re meant to be together but we’re.” Your fingers trace the skull tattoo on his side. “ I don’t care.” “I can’t leave the Serpent’s I’m sorry.” “I don’t care. You want to be a Serpent that’s fine.” “I can’t spy on them for you; I-“ “Did I ask that? We both have jobs; that’s all this is. Maybe your boss wants me dead sure, but your job doesn’t effect my view of you.” “But-“ “Does my job effect your view of me?” He asks frowning and you shake your head.
“It does; doesn’t it.” His face sinks and you chew your lip. “It’s dangerous; I don’t want you getting hurt and-“ You scowl as he laughs. “Baby; oh my god, we’re both in gangs; I could say the same about you!” “No! You’re a gang leader! That’s way more; oh my god I’m dating a gang leader.” Malachai grins, tears in his eyes as he tries to quiet his laugher you smack his shoulder, his chest glowing brighter. “Stop that! This is serious!!” “Come on Y/N it’s not; you’re just being silly.”
“Say the one who takes his gang on thrifting road trips every other week.” “Team bonding is essential to our gang!” “Going on cross country road trips to pick up leather jackets and studs from crafts stores is not essential.” He gasps mockingly and you shake your head. “Well what do the Serpent’s do for bonding then; hmm?” “We drink, party; go for ice cream; the usual gang activities.” “Ghouls do that too!” You shake your head. “Not like Serpents.” “Do not make me have a party and invite the snakes; we’d probably all get murdered.” “Ah but to die by your side, such a heavenly way to die.” You smirk and he shakes his head, hand pulling yours against his chest which pulses a light green. “Why does it do that? I always though the glow was supposed to go away once you found your soulmate.”
“It does; to everyone else; once you’ve met your  soulmate;” He nods to you, fingers twining yours as his other hand runs up your arm. “Once you’ve connected.” It threads through your hair nudging your lips against his. “No one else has need to see our connection but us.” “But why is is so pale?” “Because you’re close, the farther I go;” he steps backwards and you notice the almost sea foam green darkens a shade. “The brighter it becomes.” “Like a lighthouse.” You smile and Malachai frowns. “A lighthouse?”
“Yeah; its calling me home.” Malchai turns fixing the items on the shelf above the chair. “Or warns you away from the rocks.” “Like you’d willingly hurt me. You’re avoiding looking at me cause you’re blushing again.” You laugh when he stalks forward trying to look threatening. “I can hurt you worse than you’d imagine.” “You wouldn’t.” “I would.” “Prove it; I’m sure you have a knife on you right? Just like me?” You grin flicking your blade out and he grins back rolling his eyes. “Y/N, sweetheart that’s a toy.” He grins pull his out, it’s not double the size of yours but it’s close. “I’d say you’re compensating for something but we both know that wouldn’t be true.” He smile smugly, nodding proudly.
“You need to meet the Ghouls; officially.” “As what the Ghoulie Queen?” “Pffft. The what? Oh my god is that actually true?? The snakes actually- oh my god, fuck that is hilarious.” “Hey, no you can’t let anyone know trade secrets.” “You know our trade secrets.” Malachai nods gravely and you roll your eyes “Thrifting is not a trade secret!!!!” “Well not when you shout it out for everyone and their mother to hear like that.” “I’m sure the Serpents aren’t going to get wise to your secret thrifting locations and then buy all the skulls and dead things before you can.” Malachai narrows his eyes but nods towards the door. “Everyone’s waiting.” “For the record the this is a horrible idea.” Malachai nods. “If you agree then why are we doing it.” “Have to do it at some point otherwise we’ll be trapped in the house of the dead’s bedroom for eternity.” “That doesn’t sound too bad.” Malachai rolls his eyes as he opens the door stepping through it. You watch half the ghoulies turning towards you eyeing you curiously. You see the group from Pop’s and watch as they step forward. “What happened now?” Malachai looks annoyed at them. “Nothing; just wanted to say we’re happy Y/N’s here.” “Really? That’s all? Nothing about the BBQ you’re apparently throwing in my yard?” “It’s a welcome party.” One of them grins and winks at you, you grin back turning to Malachai.
“Yeah we talked about it before you picked me up at Pop’s; don’t you remember?” Malachai scans your face confusedly. “You talked to them before?” “Yeah they came in and ordered food, gave me a burner phone and said they were sick of you whining.” “I did not whine!” He glares and the Ghoulies hide their laugher. “You did; just a little, he may have cried when we showed him that picture you have up; the one with hot dog the third as a puppy.” “That’s just low; no one can resist a puppy.” You nod wrapping your arm around Malachai. “Now, apparently I’m supposed to meet everyone here? So lead on oh fearless Ghoul King.” You grin and watch his chest brighten.
“I thought it only got brighter when we were apart.” “Yeah, must be a malfunction.” He shrugs avoiding your gaze to call over a group of teenagers. “These are the newbies; newbies, my soulmate Y/N.” They all nod and you return it. “A malfunction?” You question and he shrugs pulling over Evan and Jacob his second in commands to greet you. They pull you into hugs before you can say anything. “He telling lies about the soulmate glow again?” Evan grins and you nod. “Yes! He won’t tell me why it gets brighter, even though we’re next to each other! He’s awful!” You watch your chest brighten as you say it.
“It is true. That it get’s brighter the farther away you get; but it also gets brighter when you think about each other; like loving thoughts; it gets dimmer the more negative you think.” “Wait so every time he thinks about me it’ll get brighter?” “Basically yes; so depending how in love he is with you; how aware of it he is; the brighter it gets. So what colour is it now?” “Ironically the same as my Serpent tattoo.” “Oh woooow that’s, uh, interesting.” “What?” “I bet you you could ask almost anything of him and he’d do it.” “No he wouldn’t; he’s a gang leader he’s not going to go soft just cause he has a soulmate.” “Wanna bet.” Evan grins and you nod.
“Bet you a weeks worth of Pop’s.” “And two hundred.” “Deal.” You grin as Evan shakes your hand Jacob laughs and Malachai turns from where he’s talking to him and another group of Ghoulies. “Babe;” You watch as he fully turns walking towards you. “What’s up?” “Evan said you wouldn’t take me on your next thrifting trip.” You smirk and Malachai frowns. “You can come if you want; it’s usually an all day thing I assumed the snakes wouldn’t-“ “I saw this adorable ice cream parlour on the way out of town when I went on a job and if it’s on the way could we stop in?” You grin and Malachai rolls his eyes. “If this is a ploy to get ice cream-“ “Noooo.” You avert your eyes grinning. “What do you want. Come on; tell me.” You smirk. “I want you to marry me.” Malachai freezes and you’re completely distracted from Evan crumbling to the ground in shock; by the same blinding glow that blocked Malachai from your vision when you first met him.
“That’s not ice cream.” He nods to you and you grin back. “I said it wasn’t a ploy to get ice cream. You just didn’t believe me.” “Well I can’t marry you; I mean one, I don’t even know your ring size so I can’t get it altered for you; two if you think the ghouls and the serpent’s are going to be able to come together for a wedding we’re going to need to stockpile enough vodka to drown Russia; and three- what. “You have a ring? That you have to get altered?” You stare and him and Malachai nods. “Of course; what kind of idiot doesn’t have an engagement ring ready once they meet their soulmate.” “You bought a ring yesterday?”
“Anyway, since you’ve met Jacob now we just have to meet a few more members and-“Malachai nods towards a group that look to be in physical pain. “What’s wrong with them.” You watch worriedly and one of them sucks in a breath “Evan passed out.” He speaks before returning to what you realize is trying to quiet laughter. Malachai turns nudging Evan with his foot. “He’s not passed out just dying of laughter, one of you turn him on his side so he doesn’t choke if he pukes.” “So is there a rule against laughing? I mean all of them seem pretty-“ “They can laugh; they just sound like a pack of dying hyena’s and half of them have those laughs that make you laugh more from the sound. Lance I swear to god if those are helium balloons.” Lance nudges the balloons back onto the table and turns away from them.
“So why is everyone laughing at my attempted proposal?” “Attempted?” Malachai looks hurt when he closes the door to the house. The muffled laughter is almost deafening. “Well yeah; I mean I don’t have a ring and as much as I want to marry you I can’t do that without a ring. Besides I don’t think my family would be too excited if introduced you as my soulmate and fiance in the same breath as them meeting you for the first time. Like surprise I’m marrying a gang leader; I know you wanted so much better for me but he’s all I want. They’d be a little bitter about it. Mals; you okay? You know I want to marry you right?”
“You met me two days ago pretty much; we’ve been enemies for years..” “It’s been almost a week; and yeah we were enemies because I didn’t know much about you; but that doesn’t matter because you’re my soulmate; we’re meant to be together; and I want that. To be with you.” “Okay well uh first things, I lied about the ring.”
“Oh thank fuck I was going to be a little freaked out if you already had a ring.” “I have three, I wasn’t sure if you were going to like this one and the other two I saw in the shop when I went up so I figured options was good. Well actually that one is my great grandmothers on my mom’s side so it’s pretty traditional so, options, good idea right?” He grins confused slightly when he just sees a green glow.
(Third film. After “rescue me”. The clocks in the school and palace all chime midnight. Id!Ben doubles over in pain then stands up straight in the traditional nuwho regeneration pose as several waves of purple, black and green magic violently emanate from him. When the chimes stop he looks like he’s just run a marathon without training)
Ben: she’s in trouble. (He teleports back to Mal’s subconscious). What’re you doing here? You’re supposed to be back on the island. She defeated you. What the hell are you doing here?!?!
(There’s a smash cut back to the cottage. Real!Ben is set free from stone first. He roar/yawns and stretches)
Ben: Mal? (He doesn’t see her). MAL? MAAAAL?!?! Oh god. Oh GOD!!!! Where is she?!?! (He rounds on the Uma statue) WHAT DID YOU DO TO HER?!?!
(There’s a crackling sound to his left and he manages to catch Carlos before the younger boy falls on his face)
Ben: you okay?
Carlos: yeah. What happened?
Ben: we got turned to stone. And Mal’s missing.
Carlos: ah fuck. Ooooh. I like your horns.
Ben: thanks. I like yours too. And those are some adorable little bat wings you have now
(Carlos reaches behind him, feels his new wings, then laughs)
Carlos: whatever Maleficent did must’ve accelerated whatever it was that unlocked my demon magic. Gimme a sec. (He retracts the horns and wings then conjures up a handheld mirror and sighs happily). There I am.
Jay: eh. Demon Carlos is just a little bit cuter. But I guess you’ll do like this
Carlos (overjoyed): JAY!!!!
(He runs up and hugs Jay. Completely ignoring Evie who falls on her face the moment the stone falls away)
Evie: owwww.
(She gets back up and walks off in the direction of her house. Ben follows her)
Jay: where are guys going?
Evie: to find Dizzy.
Ben: to find Mal.
Evie (getting out her phone): Ah dammit. There’s no signal.
Ben: I don’t care. We continue on foot.
Carlos: Uh dad? Somethings come up.
Ben: Hm? (He sees that the Pirates have also gotten set free from the stone). Eh.
(He continues walking away)
Jay: oohoo boy. Now she’s done it.
Carlos: ooooh yes. Yes she has
Uma: d-done what?
Jaylos: let down the only guy in Auradon who’s ever believed in you.
Carlos: tell us?
Jay: how does it feel?
Uma: Ben! (She jogs after him). Ben! Ben Ben Ben Ben! Ben! Look. I know I screwed up. But in my defence. How was I to know she wouldn’t do your dad said she did?
Ben: go away Uma. I don’t have the time for this.
Uma: “go away”? That’s it? “GO AWAY”? What kind of call out is that? Hit me. Yell at me. Do something!
Ben: you’re not worth it.
(Uma looks like she’s being shot point blank in the chest)
Uma: what?
Ben: you heard me. I’m not going to repeat myself.
(He continues walking away from her)
Jay (appearing next to Uma): WOW!!!! You’ve really stepped in the horseshit now.
Uma: why won’t he do anything to me?
Jay: because he doesn’t care about you anymore. You don’t mean anything to him anymore. You. Are. Nothing. Have you go that? Good. Hey Ben! Wait up
(The Hybrid and Genie walk past Evie who’s smirking at Uma)
Uma: what?
Evie: he offered you a job. An incredibly high profile and lucrative job. A job that would give you say in any and all meetings to do with the isle. But you just HAD to believe his father over us. All because you’re still in thrall to a one sided feud you’ve concocted in your head for ten years. You threw everything away because you couldn’t swallow you’re pride and fall into line. Was it worth it cousin? Was it worth it, throwing away everything you could’ve achieved just because you can’t—or don’t want to—admit that Mal isn’t out to destroy your life? Trying chewing on that when you’re alone with no one but those assholes for company.
(She walks away to join the boys. Almost immediately after. Hades bursts out of the cottage and makes a violent beeline for Uma. He corners her against a tree)
Hades: you should’ve believed her
Uma: what’re you gonna do then? Kill me?
Hades: no. This is much more fitting than any other punishment I could’ve devised. Living with your own failure. It’ll eat away at you. Until there’s nothing left but despair and your own self hatred. Now I’m going to help find my daughter. You stay here and think about what you’ve done. Have fun with the consequences of your own actions my dear.
(He teleports away in his trademark electric blue fire. Carlos walks up to Uma, chuckling viciously)
Uma: are you gonna threaten me too?
Carlos: ehhhh....half threat. Half warning. You see. They’re good people. Mom and dad. Mal and Ben. They’re good people. And so am I. And I hated doing it to animals when Cruella ordered me to. BUT. If they hate you enough after this and they give me the go ahead. I will skin you alive. And the best part. With demon magic. I bet I can keep you awake throughout the whole process. So there’s you’re warning. And there’s your threat. And—
Elsa: Carlos come on. You know that will never happen.
Carlos: I know Gran. It’s just wishful thinking.
(He teleports to the others in a burst of white smoke)
Uma: you can talk some sense into them. I know you can
Elsa: no, Uma, I won’t be doing that
Uma: what? Why not?
Elsa: because you hurt my daughter intentionally in a way that’s exponentially worse than anything she’s done to you by accident. It wasn’t an eye for an eye. It was a hanging for a paper cut. And I don’t blame Ben for cutting you loose. Frankly it’s a far kinder fate than you deserve. Now you can stay there and think about what you’ve done. And I’m going to look for my daughter
(With that she teleports away in a flurry of snow. The Hook’s catch up to Uma)
Harry: ah don’t worry. We don’t need em
Uma: no. We really do.
(She teleports away in the usual turquoise smoke)
Cj: she’s weak. And a fool.
(Harry whips around and punched her in the throat)
Harriet: what the hell was that for?
Harry: I dunno. Just felt like it. Want the same?
Harriet: not really no
Harry: then drag her along behind ya and c’mon
(At the parapet Ben’s desperately trying to locate Mal in the reflecting pool)
Ben: why can’t I find her?
Jay: I don’t know! I don’t know!
Elsa: guys. Look up
Hadie (barely audible due to how high up he is): WE USED LIQUID IRON TO EXORCISE CHAD FROM MALEFICENT!!!!
Hades (confused): WHAT!?!
Persey: oh for pity’s sake
(They grab Hadie and chad then teleport to the ground)
Hadie: we used liquid iron to exorcise Chad from Maleficent.
Persey: and she flew through Mal.
Hadie: which caused her to fall
Persey: right into the reflecting pool.
Everyone else: ohhhh
Ben: so how do we get he out?
Persey: you dive into the pool and—off he goes
(Ben’s shucked off his coat and shoes and dived into the water)
Persey: he does this a lot doesn’t he?
Carlos: yeah. Water is kind of their thick and thin. Oh and by the way. What is actually the bad part of thick and thin?
Persey: no idea. Oh! Here we go!
(Ben teleports out of the water, soaking wet and holding Mal in a bridal carry. He sets her down on the ground and starts giving her the Heimlich. Which very quickly revoked into TLK)
Ben: it’s not working. Why isn’t it working
Persey: you know what? I bet it’s something Uma did. Or Calista. Or Harriet. Or Harry. Eh. Best to chain the prick and his sisters up now so my cousin can sing like a canary.
(With that they click their fingers and the Hook’s are bound in metal chains from neck to ankle and all three promptly fall sideways onto the ground)
Uma: LET THEM GO!!!!
Persey: not until you tell us what you did Captain!
(The twin I tie like this as Ben is pulled pulled away by an unseen force. It pulls him to a nearby tree and materialises to reveal Id!Ben’s face)
Id: she didn’t fly through her. She flew into her
Ben: what?
Id: Maleficent. She didn’t fly through malb she flew into her. Into her brain.
Ben: what do we do?
Id: kiss her again. I’ll take it from there.
(Ben goes back to the small crowd, kneels beside Mal, kisses her and immediately falls unconscious with his head pressed against hers)
Carlos: WHAT DID YOU DO?!?!
Uma: DON’T LOOK AT ME!!! I DIDN’T DO ANYTHING!!!
Jay: AND THAT’S THE PROBLEM!!!!
Persey: EVERYONE SHUT UP!!!! Hadie. Ember. Now. Thank you. (They use the ember to scan the royal couple). Okay then. Good news is. They’re not dead. Bad news is. I have no idea how to wake them up. I have a feeling that’s something they need to do themselves.
Jay: with a little help of course
Perry: what are you saying?
Jay: Uma. You want to fix this right?
Uma: well obviously.
Jay: good. Gimme your hand
(He doesn’t wait for an answer. He just grabs her wrist, drags her to Ben and puts her hand on Ben’s shoulder which immediately knocks her out)
Carlos: hey. Where’d Evie go?
(At the starter palace. Evie’s walking up to the front door. Nothing looks wrong. But she can sense something off)
Dizzy: hurry hurry hurry. She could be back at any mo——mom! Hey. We didn’t think you’d be back soon.
Evie: evidently so. Since if I was back later you could’ve covered up that crack in the kitchen usjand properly
Dizzy: heheh. Whoops?
Evie: it’s alright. It can be fixed. What about you two?
Dizzy: we’re fine.
Celia: we did get a scare a little while ago. Sykes started a fight, which is why the island is cracked, then Maleficent showed up and whisked him away.
Evie: ah
Celia: you know. In hindsight. We really should’ve known he couldn’t be trusted.
Dizzy: way too smarmy
Evie: mhmm. Wait. Hahahaha. My phone’s buzzing. Hello? DOUG! Oh thank god. Video chat? Why? Ahhh. (Aside to Dizzy) they’re using the video phone at the museum. (Back to the phone). What? Okay.
(She activated the video call feature and puts the phone on the floor)
Evie: it’s ready!
(The phone screen starts glowing. It glows brighter and Brother until Doug, Lonnie, Gil and Jane are standing in front of the girls with the cauldron and misshapen objects covered in wrapping paper. Evie immediately runs up and glomps Doug who spins her around and holds her tightly)
Doug: come with me
(He leads her outside to the gazebo and Jane closes the blinds after them)
Dizzy: what was that about?
Gil: we have a body count.
Celia (grinning like the Cheshire Cat): really
Gil: please don’t do that. It was awful. Grimhilde. Tremaine. Shan Yu. Gaston. They ambushed us at the museum. They left us no choice. We had to kill them
Dizzy: you killed Lenore?
Jane: I did. I uh I aged her to dust
Gil: I snapped Gaston’s neck
Lonnie: I threw Shan Yu off a platform
Dizzy: and Grimhilde?
Jane: Doug cut her in half with Excalibur
Dizzy: poor dad
Celia: wait this means Dizzy’s the princess of Camelot. Right?
Jane: technically yes. It depends on whether Doug wants to keep the sword or not.
Dizzy: I need to go to him. It must’ve been awful
Gil (blocking her path): I uh. I think your folks want some alone time
Dizzy: my dad needs me. And you can’t stop me Gilbert
Gil: full name is a bit of a low blow but I’ll allow it. In all seriousness. You don’t want to go out there right now
Lonnie (looking through the blinds. A slightly horrified and impressed expression on her face): Gil’s right. None of us want to go out there right now
Jane: tell you what. Why don’t I make us some breakfast. Bacon omelettes all round?
Gil (covering Dizzy’s eyes and carrying her to the living room): YES! And we can eat them on the couch!
Jane: yaaaay!!!!
Celia: zoo’s?
Lonnie: what?
Celia: I’m not an idiot. I’m from the island and I’m thirteen. It’s a zoo out there isn’t it?
Lonnie: they’re just happy to see each other again.
Celia: if you say to
(At half past one in the morning. Evie and Doug finally come back inside. Wearing each other’s shirts)
Lonnie: swap the shirts
Evie: dammit. Again?
Lonnie: yup.
(Evie switches the shirts around)
Doug: well?
Lonnie: better. Needs ironing. But better.
Evie: good. Where’s everyone else?
Lonnie: living room.
(In the living room)
Celia: so what happened when you left?
Evie: it is a really long story.
Gil: we’ve got time
(Back in Mal’s subconscious. Uma’s still falling. She eventually lands, painfully, on the top of chessboard. Right when Id is filling Ben in on what’s happening with Mal)
Id: what in the names of Chaucer, Shakespeare, Dickens and Grimm is she doing here?
Uma (getting up and dusting herself off): Jay. He practically threw me in here.
Id: Ahhh. Forcible penance. Anyway. As I was saying. Mal is up there. But she’s sort of. Trapped.
Ben: how so?
Id: by her worst impulses.
Ben: like last year?
Id: yes. Okay not this time. I’m not enough. She’s needs you.
Uma: what do you expect us to do?
Id: oh cousin. I expect you to do nothing. You’re not even supposed to be here. You’re intruding upon where you don’t belong. But Jay wants you here. And I used to look like him. So, sadly, you’re staying.
Ben: where’s Mal.
Id: up there. But I don’t know what door. You’ll have to look. And please. For Mal’s sake. Don’t let her throw you off from what’s most important.
Uma: I’d never turn his attention from the island
(Id flies over to her and gets right in her face)
Id: this is not about the island. This is about Mal. It’s always been about Mal. You and your wants don’t qualify for attention. Understand?
(Uma nods, absolutely terrified)
Ben: what door do we start with?
Id: first on your left. Then first on your right. Continue like that until you find. Unless of course mr and the others manage to find her.
Ben: right. Wait. We’re you really with her last year? Throughout everything?
Id: yes oof!
(Ben’s pulled him into a tight hug in gratitude)
Ben: thank you. Thank you for being there when I couldn’t be. Thank you for being there for here.
Id (returning the hug): that’s what I’m here for Benny. And besides. When you have magic, your never actually alone.
Uma: really?
Id: shut up.
Ben: really? What do you mean?
Id: magic kind of anthropomorphises your psyche. That’s why you see Mal just before you go in for a high pressure meeting. It also helps when you’re alone in, other, situations.
Ben: other?
Id: why do you think I’m wearing your tempest costume
Ben (chuckling slightly): because after the play Mal and I snuck off and had a bit of a “tipple” in the—OH! Oh. Ooooh. Interesting.
Id: innit just?
Ben: yuh-huh
(They keep looking at each other. Slowly weirding Uma out)
Uma: you want me to start searching so you can be alone or....?
Id: huh? OH YEAH! No! No. I don’t trust you. Where Ben goes you go. Capisce?
Uma: what?
Id: oh yeah. You’re danish not Italian. Hold on....Forstå?
Uma: Ja.
Id: good. Right. Now. Ben. Up the stairs. First door on your left. Okay?
Ben: mhmm.
Id: oh uh. I should point out. The others aren’t like me. Ego’s a bit okay but Superego’s an obstinate prick. That’s what morals get ya. I’m pure instinct. In every sense of the word. (He winks at Ben who smiles in return). And they aren’t dressed like me. But they mean you no harm. So just keep an eye out and you’ll be fine. Kay Kay?
Ben: yes yes.
Id: heheh. Oh you are so very, very, cute. Shame we can’t get to know each other better
Uma: oh I think you know each other very well.
Id: they mean Ben no harm. You, however, are under no such protection. So watch where you tread.
(With that he disappears leaving the king and the Captain alone on the chessboard)
Uma: well he was creepy.
Ben: god he was hot.
Uma: are you seriously attracted to your fiancés psyche right now?
Ben: are you seriously attracted to Harry. Period?
Uma: touché.
Ben: yah-huh. Come on. Mal doesn’t have all day.
(They go through every door they find. They don’t see Mal antes here. Until they get to one with streamers on it)
Uma: what the hell is this?
Ben: April 1st.
Uma: what?
Ben (smiling happily): Mal’s eighteenth birthday
(Without thinking he enters the door. On the other side he finds himself in a garden party with Lonnie, dressed like a 1920’s flapper girl, up on the stage addressing the audience)
Lonnie: as the appointed emcee. Now that the adults have gone to their 6pm bedtimes I have just this to say. Happy birthday Mal!
(This is when “monster mash” starts. After the song. Ben’s smiling tearfully at the memory before him)
Uma: you look happy
Ben: we are. It was her second birthday in Auradon. Two months ago. Luckily, unlike her seventeenth, I had the day off. And I asked her to move in with me that night WOAH!!!!
Uma: what’d you say AAH!!!!
(They’re both pulled back through the door and are confronted with a very teed off Ben in an Auradonian suit)
Superego: what in the Lord’s name are you doing here?
Ben: uhhhh. Hah. Ummmm
Superego: you are supposed to be looking for Mal. Cherished memories have no place in the mission.
Id (appearing next to him): well now, if you had your way, Mal would’ve ran herself into the ground trying please little miss eight over there
Superego: it is the right thing to do. And you know damn well why. After all. You are the reason she needs to make amends.
Uma: what?
Id: and you should know that appeasing that rum soaked faux altruist is a pipe dream of the highest magnitude
Uma: WHAT ARE YOU SAYING!!!!
Id: don’t you get it cousin? I’m the one who had her dump you in shrimp a decade ago. I’m the one who killed those fucking journalists. I’m the one who gave Ben magic to save his life. I’m the one who tore Gil’s heart out in the restaurant. I’m the one who kept her alive in her downward spiral. I’m the one who freed you all from being statues. I’m the one who keeps Superego at bay so she doesn’t drop dead from exhaustion in the service of others. I’m the base instinct she needs to enjoy life.
Superego: it cannot always be about her.
Id: well it can’t always be about everyone else either.
Superego: to live morally
Id: is to be a fool.
Superego: better a fool than a hedonistic thrill junkie
Id: better a hedonistic thrill junkie than a
Ego: okay boys. That’s enough. Back to your corners. I’m sorry. As you can see they both have rather set ideas on how Mal should live her life.
Uma: I after with morals man.
Ego: oh I knew you would. That’s why Id and I don’t like you.
Uma: ah.
Ben: so Id wants Mal to be happy all the time, Superego thinks she needs to be Mother Theresa on steroids and you are....?
Ego: the reason she decided to seek therapy. I’m the one who strives for realism. A happy medium if you will.
Ben: right.
Ego: keep going. Oh and. A little heads up. There is a high chance Mal will be changed when you wake her up. Wether she’ll be broken beyond repair or more confident than you’ve seen her I cannot say. But you all better hope to her father that it’s the latter
(With that he disappears and the two rescuers continue their trek. Until, that is, Superego once again crosses their path)
Superego: they’re not gonna like this
Ben: not like what?
Superego: what I’m about to do
Uma: so don’t do it then.
Superego: I have to. It is the quickest route to reach the moral conclusion
Ben: that doesn’t even make any sense!
Superego: I’m sorry my love
(You pokes Ben in the forehead and sends him flying into a darkened void. When he lands he’s in the middle of the island. Superego’s standing there. Waiting for him)
Ben: why did you send me here?
Superego: you need a clue.
Ben: a clue? For what?
Superego: just listen.
(This is when “heavy is the crown”happens. After the song. Superego pokes Ben’s forehead one last time and they’re back in Mal’s subconscious)
Ben: that wasn’t very nice
Superego: I’m not here to be nice. I’m here to do my job. Now you’ve got the clue. So I’ll be off. Mal’s fate is in your hands
Uma: well that’s not fear inducing at all
Ben: shaddup and let me think. Maleficent was in the vision he sent me. Maleficent was in the vision he sent me. DARGH!!!! Why can’t I solve this?!?! I wasn’t allowed to be detective on the murder mystery weekend cause I knew how everyone would choose to kill Chad! So why can’t I solve this?
Uma: because you’re too close
Ben: heh?
Uma: you love her. You share magic with her. You could see her subconscious outside her body. You’re engaged to her. Of course you ain’t thinking. So I’m the only one who can think logically. That must be why Jay sent me after you
Ben: no it was because he hates you.
Uma: thanks
Ben: welcome
Uma: okay then. Let me think. Lemme think. Lemme think. Lemme think. Who was in the vision he gave you?
Ben: Mal, Jay, Carlos, Evie, Gil and you.
Uma: me? Really? Oh. Hahah....
Ben: don’t get a big head alright? I put you last for a reason.
Uma: right. Okay. Anybody else but me and the other five?
Ben: Superego was the ringleader. Uhhhh. Oh! I fought Maleficent towards the end just before he woke me up.
Uma: omigodthat’sit! HAHAH!!!!
Ben: what’s it?
Uma: think about it your majesty
(This is when “bring me to life” happens. After the song. Maleficent disappears and Ben’s attention is once more on Mal)
Ben: are you alright?
Mal: I. I think so. What is she doing here?
Ben: Jay thought she had to perform penance
Mal: just keep her away from me.
Uma: but—
Id: put a salt crystal in it you walking nematode. We’ve got bigger fish to fry. Now. You need to get out of here. Fast.
Ben: right. Any ideas?
Id: no. Or I wouldn’t be asking you now would I?
Ben: that’s fair. Ooooh....(imitating Gru). Light bulb....
Mal: yeah?
Ben: the mirror
Uma: what?
Id: I mean, theoretically, it could work. But Mal would have to go first
Mal: WHAT?!?!
Id: you’d have to go the same way you arrived. You. Then Ben. Then Uma. And if course. This means I’d throw Uma after you. Which I’m more than happy to do.
Uma: what?!?!
Id (smirking happily): you heard me
Uma: gah I hate you
Id: I know. I just don’t care
Ben: are you alright?
Mal: no. I um. I don’t think I can do this.
Ben: okay.... hmmmm. You two. Over here
(Id and Uma follow him to a far corner)
Uma: what’s the plan?
Ben (cheerily): I have absolutely no idea.
Uma: what?
Ben: I literally do not know how to convince Mal to go through the mirror
Uma: so what? We’re all just gonna stay here forever? Am I gonna be forced to watch you and the hippie here make ages at each other for all eternity?
Id: as tempting as that is. I have an idea
Ben: mhmm?
Id: we’re in a musicale aren’t we?
Ben: yeah?
Id: so we sing. Trust me hon. I’m the narrator. Now listen
(This is when “through the looking glass” happens. After the song. On the isle. Maleficent has just, literally, dropped into the restaurant. She looks aged and grey. And supremely pissed off)
Ursula: so. How’d ya do?
(Maleficent looks unimpressed)
Ursula: no no wait. Don’t tell me. Don’t tell me. You won and Mal is dead? No. Okay. My mistake. The kings love for your daughter vanquished you and now you’re gonna turn tail and run?
Maleficent: I am not going to run. Anywhere.
Ursula: I shoulda known you wouldn’t take the hint.
Maleficent: what hint?
Ursula: that you need to rest. Remember the last time? Sixteen years of insomnia purely because you wanted to make sure a newborn would die.
Maleficent: find the princess. I do not care if you have to tear the island apart. Just find the girl.
Ursula: oh I will. I’ve got our best numbskulls working on it as we speak. But first. You need to rest
Maleficent: I can rest when Auradon is MINE TO COMMAND!!!?
Ursula: oh for pity’s sake
(This is when “complicated” happens. After the song. Maleficent looks like she’s about to lean in for a kiss. But instead she throws Ursula at the nearest wall)
Maleficent: find the girl. Bring her to me. Because if you fail. Rest assured my dearest Ursula. You will be the one I wear next. And this time? Necromancy will be involved. Do you understand?
Ursula: yes’m.
Maleficent: then go and find her. Use your sister if you just. But find the girl. NOW!!!!
(Ursula scurries into the back room. Back in Auradon. Mal, Ben and Uma are awake. And Mal’s reading Uma the riot act).
Mal: I’m not going to compromise my own personal mental health just to appease you any more.
Uma: but——
Mal: QUIET! I’m talking. I’ve spent most of today trying to make things up to you. Last year I tried to sacrifice myself on the off chance you’d let Ben live. But every time that I try to make things a mite bit better between us. You pile on the guilt that I’ve felt for ten. fucking. years Uma. I try to help. You accuse me of trying to take centre stage. I take a step back. You accuse me of avoiding responsibility. Nothing I can ever do will ever absolve me in your eyes. And I’m alright with that. You’re not on my radar outside of being my second cousin. And I’m done feeling guilty for something I did in a fit of rage when I was eight. I’m done. Have a nice life with your petty vengeance schemes. I wash my hands of you
(She stalks off. Swiftly followed by the rest of her group. That’s when Doug’s faction turns up)
Celia: ohoho. You’ve really fucked up now.
Uma: you think I don’t know that?
(She teleports away)
Gil: hey Janey. Follow me. I have an idea
(Somewhere deep in the forest. Uma’s pacing back and forth, trying to figure out what to do. Eventually she screams in frustration and flips a tree out of its roots)
Ego!Harry: there is a way to fix this you know.
Uma: I know I know. It’s just. I, I, I, I feel trapped.
EH: then find way way to escape the trap. Like you did with your mother.
(He disappears leaving Uma alone staring in the direction of the island. This is when “it’s not too late” happens. After the song. She gets pulled out of the water by Gil. Who looks supremely unimpressed with her)
Gil: what the hell do you think you’re doing?
Uma: what does it look like?
Gil: it looks like you’re gonna steam roll onto the island without a contingency plan
(Uma doesn’t answer him)
Gil: oh my god. You’re not planning on getting outta there are you?
Uma: what’s it to you anyway? Why do you care?
Gil: you were my first friend, Uma, of course I fucking care.
Uma: but you left
Gil: I’m not going over this again! You know why I left and you would’ve done the same thing if you had the chance
Uma: okay fine sure whatever. You gonna let me go or not?
Gil: no! Not if you’re gonna be stupid about it
Uma: why is wanting to kill my mother me being stupid?
Gil: oh that’s not stupid. That’s incredibly brave especially after what she put you through over the last year. But you need a way to get out of there no matter if you win lose.
Uma: it doesn’t matter. I’ve disappointed the only three people who could actually tolerate me besides Harry and the nutters.
Gil: me, Ben and Celia?
Uma: mhmm. Ben won’t even look at me.
Gil: well you did try to immolate the love of his life after getting easily led by his crazy ass father. So it’s to be expected really
Uma: thanks.
Gil: you’re welcome. You know what?
Uma: what?
Gil: this reminds something. Something someone told me once.
Uma: what was that?
(This is when “if today was your last day” happens. After the song. Uma looks at very fancy, very ornate stick)
Uma: what’s that supposed to be?
Gil: only the thing you’ve coveted since you were sixteen.
Uma: you stole it?
Gil: what? No! I asked Jane if I could gift it to you and she said yes.
Uma: but why?
Celia (melting out of the shadows): because she’s a good person and the wand deserves to be used for good after 24 hours of forced dark magic. So come on then
Uma: what? Ohhhh no. You’re not going
Celia: but why?
Uma: I’m going to confront our mother. It’s too dangerous
Celia: oh come on. She’s old. How dangerous could she be?
(On the island. Morgana’s just been thrown out of the restaurant, beaten, bloodied and bruised. Ursula steps out after her sister, grabs her by the hair and whispers in her ear)
Ursula: if you ever get in the boss’s ay again. Then I’ll kill you myself. Savvy?
(She throws Morgana to the ground and walks away. In the arcade. There’s been a bit of a snag in the whole “keep Audrey away from the coven” plan)
Facillier: how. Do you lose. A PRINCESS?!?!
Anthony: to be fair she is rather short.
Anastasia: lemme guess. You ran across one of your fellow disciples, handed her off to him and he lost her?
Anthony: yup.
Facillier: perfect(.). Absolutely fucking PERFECT!!!!
(He kicks one of the tables over and stalks off to back room swiftly followed by Anastasia)
Facillier: I failed. Again
Anastasia: we didn’t fail Antoine.
Facillier: I failed, Stasia. The one thing I could do over here to help my daughters, protect a royal they both hate, and I failed
Anastasia: one of Anthony’s friends have her
Facillier: and how strong willed are they in the face of torture?
(Anastasia doesn’t answer him)
Facillier: I knew it. Why couldn’t I have helped them more?
(Back in the alley)
Morgana: what’ve I done?
(Back in Auradon)
Uma: I don’t know what to do.
(This is when “who am I” happens. After the song. Uma still hasn’t moved from her spot)
Uma: will it work for me?
Gil: the wand? Yes. It’s a gift. Willingly given. It’s partially sentient remember?
Celia: just point and think. Oh. And say the words
Uma: she’s terrified me unlike any other/help me go back and face down my mother/bibbidi bobbidi boo.
(There’s a burst of turquoise light and a hole opens in the barrier. Uma turns to Gil hopefully)
Gil: no. This is something you have to do yourself
(Uma dashes up and hugs him gratefully. Then she turns back around and walks to the island. This is when “I stand” happens. After the song. In the arcade)
Uma: hi
(Facillier immediately rushes up and starts fussing over her)
Uma: dad, dad, dad, I’m fine. I’m fine. I just. I’m fine.
Facillier: good. Tha-that’s good.
Uma: but you’re not. What happened?
Anthony: I uh—heheh-kinda lost the princess
(Uma slowly devolves into raucous laughter)
Anastasia: I don’t think she’s cut up by it
Celia: she tried to kill her in a mirror yesterday
The Tremaine’s: ohhhh
Uma: ohhhh that’s just what I needed
Facillier: because....?
Uma: I did something horrible. And now I need to make up for it.
Facillier: how do you propose to do that?
Celia: she’s gonna kill mom.
Anastasia: what?
Uma: I’ve got the wand. I can do it. I want to do it. I need to do it. And it needs to be done
Facillier: yes I understand that but um——
Uma: oh god not you too. She didn’t think I could do it either you know
Anthony: yeah, and as we saw from the tv. Ya couldn’t. That’s why you were awol for was it not?
Uma: I don’t like
Anthony: likewise
Facillier: okay. Enough, enough. We need to be smart about this. She manipulated you and kept you in a grotto for a year in case you’ve forgotten
Uma: yeah and I’ve just gotten manipulated a bastard I’ve never properly met and they all hate me for it. And as well they should after the way I reacted
Anthony: what did you do?
Celia: Adam made a fake confession out of Mal’s voice on a tech device thing, a tape recorder I think it’s called, Uma flew off the handle, because of course she did, tied Mal to a tree and tried to roast her alive
Anthony: whew. And Jay didn’t immediately kill you for it? Tch. Genie boy must be slipping.
Celia: they all got turned to stone by Maleficent almost immediately after
Anthony: Ahhh. Stay of execution by execution. Clever. And lucky. Although. Since you were all freed. I might have to take the uh heh “lucky” back, you know, so to speak.
Uma: do you ever shut up?
Anthony: nope.
Facillier: enough. Both of you. We need
Uma: it’s always the plan’s with you. Can’t I just go?
Anastasia: Uma, we all know you can handle it. It’s just. It’d be much more prudent if you had a——
Uma: go on. Say it. You think I need a contingency plan.
Celia: well we’re not wrong. Are we? You’re impulsive. Reckless. Foolhardy. Entirely too cocky for you’re own good
Uma: SHUT UP!!!! SHUT. UP!!!! None of you think I can do this. NONE OF YOU!!! But I’ll show you. I’ll show you all.
(She quite literally storms out of the arcade and heads to the restaurant. This is when “speechless reprise” happens. After the song. Ursula claps sardonically)
Ursula: very well done dear. Tell me. Did you practice that? Cause I don’t believe for one second that was all off the cuff
Uma: shut up.
Ursula: excuse me?
Uma (voice breaking): shut up. Please. Just. Shut up. Listen. Please just listen.
(This id when “listen” happens. After the song. Ursula looks highly unimpressed)
Ursula: well now that’s over
(She uses magic to slam Uma into the wall and bind and gag her with some of the decorations on the wall)
Ursula: you made a very big mistake coming back here. Well. You’ve always been making mistakes haven’t you? Going after the king to spite someone better than you. Trusting me to keep that pirate alive for a year when you knew I’d never let you out of my sight again. And the original sin. Talking to the pirate in the first place. But no matter. If we cannot find the princess. I guess you’ll have to do.
(Uma’s muffled screams echo through the island. Loud enough to be heard all the way to the arcade)
Facillier: I knew she’d be outsmarted
Anastasia: what do we do now.
Facillier: go to the one person left in this hellhole who still means anything to Uma
(He teleports away. In the Speakeasy. Morgana’s stitching herself up)
Facillier: need any help with that?
Morgana: not from you. Why are you here
Facillier: she has Uma. Surely you must’ve heard her scream.
Morgana: just came from there. Funny thing I should note. I helped you smuggle a princess out of the restaurant and away from the Fae. And got beat to hell for my trouble. And where is she? Evaporated. Into thin air. How’s that for a basket of muffins?
Facillier: what was that last part?
Morgana (pinching the bridge of her nose): I’m not entirely sure. I think I may have a concussion.
Facillier: right....are you going to help her or not?
Morgana: of course I’m going to help her. She’s the only thing we’ve done right in our lives. And even then I managed to scare that up.
Facillier: that wasn’t your fault. You tell Uma not to do something and she digs her heels in.
Both: she gets it from her mother
Morgana: I know. I know. But it’s because of me she has turquoise hair.
Facillier: yeah. It’s looks better on her than lavender did.
(Morgana chuckles. They both lean in. But then Facillier pulls away)
Facillier: I’m sorry. I can’t. I’m sorry
Morgana: yeah I kinda figured
Facillier: it’s just that
Morgana: I know. You don’t have to explain yourself to me.
(This is when “let me go” happens)
In her haste to reach the beach and the sweet escape she senses at hand, @tamyrawilliams finds herself snared in a net. Nearby, @no-gambit and Mallory respond to her calls for help, but like all things involving Mallory and Tamyra, it soon comes to sharp words.
After setting off the flares with Aurélie in hopes that the ship would see, Tamyra wanted to find some kind of higher ground to see when the rescue would come from the ship, she could know which part of the beach to run towards as fast as possible. SHe wasn't a good runner, but she would run as fast as she possibly could once she knew rescue was coming.
Going up the tree wasn't a problem, she got up relatively quickly, and when after about five minutes, she saw some kind of light flare up from the ship and keep up, she was certain it had to be the people on the ship signaling back. They took their time with it, but it only mattered that they acknowledged the flares and they were coming. They were coming.
She needed to get to the beach. Damn waiting for people coming, there was a sign, she needed to go.
Going down didn't go as planned, though, and Tamyra ended up slipping and falling - and it wasn't enough that she hit her shoulder, no, she also activated a fucking trap and the next thing she knew, she was hanging in a net, no idea how she got down. "Shit. Fuck. Who the hell--" but it didn't matter. Not now. Not now, when she was so close to getting out. Instead she started yelling, "HELP! SOMEBODY, PLEASE HELP!"
《❀》
Magnolia trailed Mallory close enough to see, at least, her vague shape in the gloom. She forced the wind to carry every minute sound to her down to their very breaths to compensate for the fog, to patch together the terrain. She was about to protest once more, to urge them to turn back towards the more populated areas because surely this was just another trick of the island, one meant to trap and to maim and haven’t they been hurt enough lately, when she heard it. A cry, familiar in cadence.
No grabbed Mallory’s wrist, already hauling her towards the plea. “Someone-“ she knew it was Tamyra, but she doubted Mallory would be so easy to pull forth if she knew-“Needs help. See? This is why we don’t fuck off into the island bullshit for no reason, Mal.”
Mallory can't help thinking this is the creepiest the island has been. Ghosts are one thing - she can pretend it's a hallucination, for one, but this impenetrable fog? She squints, hand flailing about in front of her. Her fingers brush against a tree in the same moment a scream, low and far, reaches her ears. "What the--" Her swear turns into a yelp as No touches her wrist. "Hey, we were doing fine, we used the buddy system. It's not my fault someone else didn't."
Despite her retort, she doesn't protest as No hauls her towards the noise. "Weren't you hear for the ghosts? Isn't running towards screaming a bad thing?" she murmurs, gaze darting around. They aren't quite in the jungle, or she doesn't think so at least. Mallory swishes water around in front of them, hoping to clear the fog, but it does nothing. So much for finding this quick and easy. "Ugh. Okay, fine. Hello? Who's out there?"
《❀》
Somebody was out there and listening, and Tamyra only cared about that. The voice that called back even sounded familiar and she didn't even think about who it was, didn't even occur to her that the person who was asking her who she was could have been Mallory, she was just happy to hear a familiar voice. "It's me," very telling, Tamyra, very telling. "I got caught in a net trap, please help me!"
She looked around, wondering if she could do anything to speed up the process of getting down, but she couldn't see anything, and figured that her best chance was making sure whoever was out there found her anyway. "Here! Come, follow my voice, it's Tamy--" No appeared among the mist and Tamyra breathed a sigh of relief. "Thank god it's you, I was afraid that nobody was going to hear me and--" and then she noticed Mallory Castle and she stopped in the middle of her sentence. "What is she doing here?"
《❀》
Rumor had it that net traps had become the second most dangerous thing on the island, directly after human stupidity. No had to choke on a snort rather than let Tamyra hear her exasperated laugh, while resolutely ignoring Mal’s retort.
She slid her hand from Mal’s wrist to her hand as she ventured within sight of Tamyra, huffing in relief to find her relatively unharmed. “Tam, I heard you—“ she began only to roll her eyes. The dramatics between them were getting tiresome. “Being next to me, that’s what she’s doing, which is much more sensible than whatever you are doing.” Magnolia had left the machete that usually graced her hip behind that morning. Stupid, she thought as she fiddled with her belt, but she hadn’t exactly anticipated this. “We might have to actually untie you from the tree…” she mused, ready to act rather than dawdle.
《❀》
Someone cursed her. It's the only reasonable explanation for why Mallory is peering up at Tamyra, contemplating how to fetch her down from a net. She considers leaving her there, eyes narrowed, and it's only No's hand stilling her from the sharp retort. Instead, she says idly: "We followed the yellow brick road to see who was screaming at the end of it. We better watch out, a house will fall on our heads next. That's how the movie goes, right?" Her eyes flicker up, but it's just fog, fog, and more fog. No house in sight.
She shakes her head, mildly disappointed. "Ah, well, you're the boss, No. I guess I wouldn't want a cursed house." And letting Tamyra get squished by one is a surefire way to get a haunted house. Mallory wanders to the tree trunk, trying to figure out whether this is Luke's contraption or another person's. His, at least, she knows how to untie without too much fuss. "Hm, I think this is some castaways, I've certainly never seen this style before."
《❀》
"It's not like I wanted get trapped here! It's not like I saw the net trap and intentionally walked into it thinking, 'oh, how fun will it be to spend way too much time today wasting it in a net when we can get saved any moment now'," Tamyra rolled her eyes at No. Despite her annoyance, though, she was glad to see No there. At least she could trust her to make sure Mallory wasn't doing anything unacceptable.
She ignored Mallory's dig (wicked witch of the west? really?), but followed the woman with her eyes to make sure Mal wouldn't do anything to jeopardize her getting down from here. "No, please check the trap too, I don't want her to try to keep me up here. And really, if you can just cut me down, I'm good with that, too, I don't get if I get hurt or something. Just get me down as fast as you guys can so I can get back to the beach." She looked to her side - most of the beach was hidden behind the tree canopy at this point, but she still remembered the light. "Have you guys seen that light as well?"
《❀》
Magnolia sighed, pitying and worried. She knew already that Tamyra was likely amongst the most desperate at this moment, the most invested in this phantom ship being real. The island was just taunting them now with a treat on a stick, as it always had. “I care if you get hurt, and Mallory has it in hand. I’ll try to slow your descent so you don’t just crash.” To punctuate her plan, she pulled a stout updraft around them, rustling their hair. It could at least cushion her inevitable fall from the net.
“I have,” she said slowly. The light, the ship, the fog all spelled strife. “Mal have you? Tam, it’s just the island. Or it’s a ship that’ll never reach the shore, we’ve seen plenty of those." Perhaps leaving Tamyra in the net would honestly be safer for her. She wouldn't be amongst the fools trying to swim to the light. “It’s just a trick, you have to realize that by now.”
As Mallory inspected the knots, No looked to her. “I don’t have anything sharp on me. Can’t you untie it? We can try to find a rock to fray it apart.”
《❀》
Mallory huffs, crouching. She prods the knot for a loose edge, eyes rolling at Tamyra's worry. "I'm not going to leave you in the tree, you'd probably scream like a banshee until our ears bleed and I'm squeamish around blood. Or it'll scare the boat off before my brother is on." She can't have that, not until Harvey is on its deck. Then it can sail off into the sunset with no one else and she won't care.
Has she? She halts, frowning. "I think so. I try not to pay attention until its responding to us, or closer than this one. Seems a bit strange that we've got this fog and this ship, doesn't it?" She asks, skeptical. "I don't think it's real."
She lets out a noise of triumph as she finds the edge of the knot, pulling on it and letting the knot unravel. When she finishes unwinding it, Tamyra only lurches down a few inches. Her lips purse in annoyance. Her knot is gone, but another one is beneath it. "This was built to be annoying, wasn't it? Look, it's knotted in like four spots. Let's try a rock, this is going to take too long to untie. Or we can try to freeze it and hit it hard enough to break. Dunno if we'll find a sharp enough rock in this mess."
《❀》
No's reassurnce only worked slightly because it was coming from No, and Tamyra was sure she wouldn't let Mallory do anything unacceptable. "Screaming like a banshee around you might not even be a bad idea... Maybe you'd actually listen to that," Tamyra pondered. Their insistence on the ship not being real, though, that was confusing and annoying in that moment. Why did nobody believe it was real? That it could be and was real? "If you ask me, the fog is the island. It realized that ship penetrated its defenses and is about to get us out of here, so it's trying to stop it as much as it possibly can. Can't exactly throw ghosts at the ghost, right? It would just go right through. Hence the fog."
She let out a small shriek when the net lurched down a few inches and grabbed onto the net itself, but she was still hanging high and the rope was starting to hurt. "A little warning next time?!" she snapped towards Mallory before turning to No. "Please, look at what she's doing. Can't you see how reckless she is? Not even a word of warning, anything."
Tamyra tilted her head, squinted her eyes at the trap, but she couldn't see it properly from up here. "You could always try to steal a rock... Oh, sorry, you don't steal unimportant items like rocks, only shiny, pretty, important stuff, hmm?" She couldn't help the jab as she reached up to touch her necklace just for a moment. "I think freezing it is your best option. And possibly the fastest, I vote for that one."
《❀》
Magnolia shook her head throughout Tamyra’s musings. The ship could not be real, it had to be a phantasmic tease, a trick, a cruel torturous image meant solely to prey on people like Tamyra. “If the island wanted to stop that ship, it would have sunk it or sent a monster after it or any number of things. Fog is just fuck with us, just as that horn and the light and the ship is. Come on, Tam, you’re smarter then this.”
Her power surged as Tam dropped, but she let it flit away into the smog when nothing else happened. “You did ask to be let down as fast as possible,” No shot back. “Mallory is the reckless one? At least she’s not desperate to get fall into the island’s trap. I trust her and-“ Magnolia looked towards her, though the fog showed only her silhouette and said pointedly-“I trust her not to do anything stupid, right?”
No groaned and leaned back on her heels. She saw the necklace, and felt the barbed implication, but now was not the time. She poked Tam in the side through the netting. “For fuck’s sake, the both of you. Enough of your idiotic feud. Mal, I have a bottle of water, can you use it to freeze it?”
《❀》
Sympathy wells in Mallory against her will. For all her anger with Tamyra - and she has enough to fly off the island using steam power - she doesn't feel right ripping the rug out from underneath her. But then she remembers the last time she spoke and her sympathy fades. "Yes, yes, I won't do anything stupid. Scout's honor. And I was a scout, before you doubt me."
She glares at Tamyra. "At least rocks are most useful than pretty shiny--" Mallory stops, but only because No's frustration boils over. She huffs, but doesn't respond except to wiggle her fingers for the bottle. "How good are you at freezing things?" She asks Tamyra, upending the water over the vine and freezing it with a touch. "Need it to stay frozen until we hack through it, but I can't do both." Freezing isn't her strong suit, even if she can manage well enough if she concentrates. "No, maybe you should hit it. You have the arms for it - or the attunement if you're feeling fancy."
《❀》
No had good points, but Tamyra didn't want to hear them, didn't really want to listen enough to start thinking about it and let it all sink in. In her mind, everything she thought made sense and No was just being skeptical because she's given up so long ago. So she didn't say anything, just huffed out some air and kept looking at what Mallory was doing.
No's promise that Mallory wasn't going to do anything had more weight than Mallory's - really, if she was lying about the scout thing, she was still say she was, so that didn't reassure anything for Tamyra. She let out a yelp at No's poking, and she wanted to tell No that it wasn't actually an idiotic feud, but Mallory stopped dead in her sentence and damn if she was going to seem the childish one out of the two of them.
"If you freeze, and No hits, you two should be good to go, I can't really reach that rope from here," Tamyra said, even twisting her arms somewhat to show that it was at the wrong angle for her. In reality, she really wasn't good with freezing and had too much pride admitting it in the moment. "And if you keep holding onto the rop while you keep it frozen, you can hold it after it's broken and let me down a bit more gentle." Another horn came from the beach, and Tamyra closed her eyes, her heart beating fast. "Just please, guys, hurry, I want to-- we need to... Please."
《❀》
Magnolia narrowed her eyes between the two of them, armed with another reprimand if need be. It had been decades, they ought to have used the semblance of sense the both of them possessed to settle this years ago.
She handed the water to Mal without further comment before stooping and running her hands through the short grass and dirt until she found a sizable rock. “Okay,” she murmured, bouncing it in her hand until she gripped it well. “Mal, freeze when you can. Tam, get your head on straight.” She waited, poised to hit the knot.
《❀》
Mallory sighs. "I was really hoping you were someone who could freeze from a distance like Matthew or Prince Charming, but oh well. We all have our faults." Or many of them, as the case may be for some of them. She taps the water with her pinky, sliding it along the length of the rope with the edge of her finger, wary of being anywhere close to where No will hit it.
"This fog is... not helping with a talent I'm not so good at anyway, so try not to break any of my fingers. These are my money makers. But, go, hit it." And as the rock strikes, shattering the ice and the vine with it, Mallory lets out a shriek of surprise as the vines unwind with a whoosh. It unravels and unravels, the net flying towards the ground, and instinctively she grabs the nearest edge, yanking on the edges of it, heedless of the burn against her palms.
《❀》
Tamyra grabbed onto the net - as if that would actually save her or help her from the fall while she watched as Mallory froze the rope and then No broke it. She fully expected Mallory to hold onto the rop and keep her up and then slowly release down. Maybe release her fast from the last bit at the end, but not instead she could only feel the pull of gravity in her stomach and then she was falling down. She completely missed the part when Mallory tried to grab onto the rope and tried to hold her upright, she just registered the hit to the ground and she groaned, pain surging through her back.
"Shit," she groaned and remained there for several moments before she snapped. "Was that really necessary, Mallory? I know you hate me and want to fuck with me, but did you really have to just let me drop down like this when you could have just let me down easily?"
《❀》
Too intent with aiming and not accidentally hitting Mallory’s hands No could only conjure the slightest of winds to try and ease Tam’s descent and winced when she heard the thud. She saw the rope burns on the former’s hands before she heard the latter’s words.
Magnolia hissed, her patience expended. “Enough, Tamyra,” she growled low and furious and imposing through the gloom. “Both of you, enough. This is needless, idiotic bullshit. You two think this island needs help torturing you? You want to be the tools of this place now as well?” With gentle hands, if not gentle words, No reached for Mal, turning her hands over to fuss over them. “Use the rest of the water for that.”
Her capacity to tut like a mother hen went just as quickly as it came and she turned to haul Tamyra roughly to her feet. “Listen to me, I don’t give a shit about your resentment for each other or whatever relief you get for sticking and poking and provoking the other. You want the selfish reason I want you to stop, too? I love you both, you hurt each other you’re hurting me. Do you want that? Do you want to help the island fuck with me too?” She paused, letting it rest for only a moment and glancing between the two of them, helpless rage alight in her eyes. “Put your useless feud to fucking rest.”
《❀》
Mallory hisses, shaking out her hands and then cradling them. "Oh, go cry me a river, you're fine," she retorts. Then winces as No rounds on them with fiery eyes and equally sharp words. A retort comes to her lips, but No silences her when she grabs her hands. She winces again, but reaches for the rest of the water with little complaint.
"I don't know if it's that easy," Mallory mutters, dumping the water on her hands and holding it in place over her palms. It eases the burn some, but the mark will remain for a day or two longer unless she finds something more fresh. Her eyes land on Tamyra, the same bitter swirl residing there, and she wishes she could swallow it as easily as she once did. "You know I don't want to hurt you," and yet she doesn't know if she can do that. "But this--" she gestures between her and Tamyra, frowning, because looking at Tamyra invokes outrage and useless nostalgia. "I don't think this will change, even if you're the one asking me to let it go. How can I?" She doesn't meet No's eyes, rocking on her feet.
Her heart pounds, and she nods to herself once, before turning around, putting her back to them both. It's the best she can do. "It's best if we just don't interact. You don't fuck with me, I won't fuck with you, Tamyra."
《❀》
No was at her limits, apparently, because suddenly she snapped, telling both of them off (it was a bit of a satisfaction to Tamyra that she wasn't getting all of it, despite how Mallory kept trying to put all of this on her, as if all of this was her fault), but as much as Tamyra loved No, she couldn't agree with her. And she could definitely not just up and forgive Mallory for anything.
To be fair, Mallory did seem to try to catch the rope at least, based on how her hands looked, but Tamyra was too proud to admit that out loud, and she just let out a small huff when Mallory said that she didn't want to hurt her. As if she wasn't the one who crashed their plane. The only reason she didn't say it out loud was because No was there. So, in a way, she was helping, even if just momentarily, and on the surface level. (She was irrational, of course, but she didn't realize that.)
"For once, and I can't believe I'm saying this, but this once I do agree with Mallory. I don't think this will change. I can agree to staying out of your way, I'll be the happiest person if I don't have to deal with you," she addressed Mallory for this, "but that is it, No. And since we're getting out of here today, we won't have to deal with each other much longer anyway." Which only reminded her of what was still happening. "Thank you, for getting me down," maybe it was petty and childish, but she pointedly looked at No for those words, "but I'm going to the beach now to see if anything changed and if we could start boarding again."
《❀》
"I don't care how you feel right now, just stop feeding the island and being idiots," No snapped. This wasn't a battle she could win and wasn't a war that belonged to her. It was frustrating beyond all belief. Their delusions with each other and their delusions of escape. There was none, they were trapped beside each other whether they liked it or not. "Tamyra," she began, fierce and angry. "Do not do anything idiotic, it is a trick. Nothing more. It will be my turn to shout at you if you fall for it." Magnolia shook her head a final time, spared Mallory a glance to check her hands and gauge if she would follow, and turned to stride towards (hopefully) the populated beach.
