he’d gestured at one of the boats run aground in the sand,   the sea lapping at its carcass.   “i’ve never actually been on a boat,”   he mused,   looking to distract from the silence that had fallen between them.   he could have sworn he saw a flicker of mischief in blackwall’s eyes when the warrior responded,    “sailing is like sex. do it wrong,   and it'll make you sick.   but do it right,   and there's no feeling in the world like it.”

he has to be doing this on purpose,   thought the mage,   warmth coiling through him.   he forgot about the black lotus he’d knelt to collect.  the coast’s waves thundered against the rocky shore,   battering them lightly with ocean spray.   and the way he leaned into that damned voice,   the low rumble of it —

“sounds like you’ve done it often,”   he said,   half distractedly.   wait.  the color drained from his face.   “sailing.   i mean sailing,  of course.”   maker.    no one else heard that.

he managed to recover himself,   though,   adding,  “i mean,   i can barely swim —”   or, well,   not like this.   a dragon was as good as useless like this.   he missed wading into the sea,   water cooling scales and dripping down his wings.   he would lay in the sun afterwards for its warmth until lulled into a sleep.   “that far at sea sounds unthinkable  ...”
