Hi! So I’m working on a romance book where the trope is “he fell first, she fell harder” and the dynamic is the usual cliche of she’s the popular girl, he’s the edgy loner. And I’m honestly just stuck on how to SHOW that dynamic well while maintaining the semi-slow burn direction I’m looking to towards (honestly I’m scared to do anything besides slow born just because I know people prefer it over the opposite yk?). Ultimately I was wondering if you had any tips on how to write that kind of dynamic?
Thank you so much xoxo
Hey! Thank you so much for reaching out! I absolutely LOVE this trope because it's so cute! There's a ton a freedom that follows this dynamic, but understandably, there's also a bit of difficulty that comes with it. So, let's get started!
For the record, I'll be giving overall advice about this topic too, so the boy will always be considered "he fell first" character while the girl will always be considered the "she fell harder" one as of this post. I know it might not make much sense now, but it will later!
1. BEGINNING/MEETING
The boy should fall in love with the girl near their first meeting. This could be before, during, or shortly after they meet. He falls fast. If they already know each other, then I suggest establishing his crush near the beginning of the story. This helps with the pacing and obviously, it's part of the dynamic. The girl, however, may have a bit of interest, but not necessarily any romantic ones.
Simple, right?
2. DEMONSTRATING THEIR DYNAMIC
Next, let's talk about how to properly depict their relationship! Typically, they'll start off as friends and despite the boy's crush on the girl, he's really good at hiding it. Again, this will be big help with the pacing and will emphasize the "she fell harder". The girl, on the other hand, slowly develops more interest as she gets to know him.
They stay really close for a while, but purely as friends.
Eventually, she starts liking him and quickly realizes her feelings. Unlike the boy, this realization should be a huge BOOM. She falls hard. It's dramatic, it's important, and she's going to do something about it.
3. PACING THE SLOWBURN
You want a semi-slow burn, correct? Well let's explore a few elements that'll bring it to life.
Boy falls in love fast - As expected, this is going to help your story move faster and now, the readers are just waiting for the girl.
Boy hides his feelings from her - This will assist you with the slow-burn because he's willing to stay as nothing more than a friend and doesn't attempt to make a move other.
They stay friends - This blends in with the last point; it slows the story's pace, and they happen around the same time (he hides his feelings as they become friends).
Girl realizes her feelings - This could be somewhere in the middle; she might take a bit to fully comprehend that she likes the boy, but it generally shouldn't take too long because of how hard she falls.
Confession - Like the first point, the confession happens fast, almost right after she discovers her feelings.
4. KEY POINTS
And lastly, let's talk about some key points regarding the "he fell first, she fell harder" trope!
Switching POVS: Not necessary, but I definitely recommend it! Switching point of views from the two characters offers both sides of the mirror, allowing the readers to see how long the boy was in love for while revealing how the girl also fell in love. Definitely helps when exhibiting their dynamic!
Boy is willing to stay friends: I mentioned this in the last point, but typically the boy doesn't try to advance their friendship because he doesn't want to ruin what they have and is fine with remaining as friends. However, he DOES show a bit of his love through actions, gifts, and words!
Girl confesses: Normally, the one who falls harder is the one to confess. This is because well, they are IN LOVE and are willing to take the risk and confess!
The crush is obvious: This is just a fun and fluffy incorporation that I'm a sucker for. I absolutely love it when the boy's ("they fell first" character) infatuation is so obvious to everyone (passerby's, their friends, etc.) EXCEPT the girl. It's honestly so cute!
Different types of love: Keep in mind that just because the boy is good at hiding his love and didn't act on it doesn't mean his admiration is any weaker than the girl's!
In some sense, this trope is basically friends-to-lovers but they start of halfway to their relationship. This post is a bit messy, but hopefully it helps!
Happy writing~

Alright, alright, I caved.
After a slot opened up in me to be able to take on another show emotionally, I decided to invest in OwlHouse. I thought I would probably like it, but it won me over faster than I thought it would.
I’ve already watched a few episodes, but I realized that it might be more fun to do liveblogs, so here I am - with a liveblog...
I will be doing this episode by episode, and probably releasing them every once in a while. Everything will be under a cut, however, to save you all dash space.
If you’d like to follow, please track the #chekhov watches owlhouse tag!
(I’d also like to dedicate this post to the Tumblr Staff Rob, who did his best to restore this post for me when tumblr queue ate it.)
Without further ado...
Episode 1!!
Fair warning - this is technically not a ‘live’ blog, because I have already watched some of the show before deciding to do this, but I’ll still react to them to round things out.
Immediately, this reminds me of Little Witch Academia... Anyone? No? Only me? I feel like maybe I’m getting my wires crossed, but there HAD to have been some inspiration taken from there?
“No-- my only weakness! Dying!!“
Same, big snake monster. Same.
Oh, backup snakes? This girl is READY.
Please don’t mistreat the snakes.
Spider breath... This kid is on my wavelength. That griffin seems to be waiting to be put out of its misery though, and I don’t blame it.
My child... where did you get that pigeon head though.....
Nurse mother, do you REALLY think signing up your spider-summoning daughter for summer camp will actively make her antics slow down instead of ramp up to 60?
Awww, baby makes AMVs... But also, NO ONE TOLD YOU TO THROW AWAY THE BOOK??? I know it’s symbolic, but goodness, isn’t that a bit much???
wait a sec, is that Eda????
Love the realistic bilingual kid experience of replying in English when your mom talks to you in your native language. Universal.
Love this introduction of Eda’s character. She’s got that little green scarf on and everything. Like a tiny trash grandma.
Oooh, okay, let’s extrapolate...
Lots of bones everywhere. I kinda love the aesthetic here - it’s gross and visceral, kind of like what Luz was making with her school projects. Yet in the middle of it all we have a rather clear gothic looking structure. Is this a power imbalance in the supposed kingdom?
The five circles of stained glass seem to perhaps indicate something like Hogwarts houses? Several different types of magic?
But Luz has no reason to freak out as much as she is - she LOVES weird stuff! Haha... No, I kid, I kid. I get it.
“Am I in the bad place?“
Eyyyyy, gotta love shows referencing other shows. :)
“Oh dear child... I’m not like you.”
Wow, what a DRAMATIC reveal for some pointy ears. :) I love her.
We should all aspire to have such cool and stylistically well put together wanted posters. You can tell the commissioned artist really respects her craft.
Steven Universe fans watching this:
I’m looking too.
Okay, okay, enough shenanigans, let’s have some LORE.
I love this landscape. Teeth or bones, or whatever they are, this is one of the more unique settings we’ve gotten, though maybe I’m prejudiced because I love body horror and bones. The darker orange and red themes fit really well here.
Things I’m desperate for: Giraffe Lore
Things I’m more desperate for: Eda lore. Why do her limbs fall off? Is she a zombie?
Things I’m not quite as desperate for: Hooty lore. He can keep that to himself.
well hello there mysterious chekhov’s glyph which will DEFINITELY not be relevant in the second chapter (or end of season? Maybe? Idk it just seems important).
Ah, yes. That would have been my reaction as well, to be fair. Somehow I didn’t expect to see this guy so early on. I figured he would be a low stress early villain that got assimilated into the Found Family. Kinda psyched that he’s just there from the start.
....I’m just gonna presume this is all true and accept it at face value.
Old Escape The Cops Lady and Tiny Little Demon King, I need your backstory. How did you meet.
I love looking at background details, because like... you can tell the BG artists had fun. I particularly love how the 3 eyed toad doesn’t actually have any reward attached to her. Though the Knife Baby does intrigue me!
“I write fanfics of food falling in love.”
Why am I being called out...
“Noo! My weak nerd arms!”
Finally, a realistic portrayal of a protagonist thrust into a fantasy setting!
.....................
Okay but. If only humans could pass through the barrier... wouldn’t that mean a human had to have deposited those things in there? Do they have a human on staff in this weird pseudo-prison??? Suspicious....
Confession - when I initially saw ads for this show, I expected Eda to be a villain, not a loveable middle aged witch aunt figure. I am shockingly even MORE drawn to her this way. I expected betrayal. I expected her to be a lowkey threat?? But no. She’s just wholesome in the way a solid raccoon is.
“Eda, are you okay?!”
“Yeah, this just happens when you get older...”
“........does it..?”
If I had to pinpoint the exact moment this show won me over...... it would probably be this one.
I know it’s probably the wrong thing to focus on, but what is that insignia? Wings??? Like.... the kind OWLS HAVE?????
COINCIDENCE??? I THINK NOT!!!
I’m really loving the landscape here. And those fireworks are... hmm... intricate?
Gotta love the old tried and true Witch Apprentice Actually A Live In Intern trope. :)
Hold up...
Is that
Is that Hooty? I thought he was just a door....
Eda: This is my room for human stuff. I will also put my human in there.
. . .
Overall rating: I think this is a cute overall beginning. The prison break went hard! I enjoyed the characters and it kind of surprised me in a lot of ways. It definitely does a great job setting up a world with a lot more to explore while giving us a small taste of cool magic stuff and witchy battles. :)
Now on to Episode 2!!
Read the liveblogs in order by clicking here!

Truth or Dare
With; Stiles Stilinski
IMPORTANT A/N:I’m officially down bad folks. But I wanted to say there’s a song I need you to play during a specific part of this story. It really only lasts a minute, and you’ll know when to play it. ALSO do not skip over this fic just because the song is by 1D I promise it’s fitting and not fangirl cringe. But this is tumblr an app practically made for that...@ me. Anyways I appreciate all the recent love on my work, and I hope you enjoy!
Warnings: Teen drinking
———————————————————————
“Y/n”
“Mmm.”
“Do you have a crush on anyone?” Of course Isaac, shit-eating smirk and all would be stirring the pot. Knowing damn well you’ve made eyes at Stiles for as long as he’d known you. You stare him down with a knowing smile, taking a slow sip of your drink before answering.
“Yeah”
Stiles raises his brows in surprise at your nonchalant response. If you did have a crush, wouldn’t you have told him? All he did was rant about Lydia to you. Though, he hadn’t talked about her in a while. Seeing as his feelings for her had seemingly fizzled away earlier this year. It was odd, one day he was madly in love with the girl and the next he wasn’t. Either way, he’s surprised at the twinge of anger he feels at your words. Jealousy
The realization scares him, what was he jealous for?
“Interesting y/n/n, who’s grabbed your attention?” Isaac presses, the two of you not breaking contact as you take another challenging gulp of your drinks. A couple of the pack members exchange worried glances. The two of you always have a habit of teasingly pushing each other’s buttons, but issac seems to be pressing a little too much. As if he knows something the others don’t.
The twinging heat in Stile’s stomach ignited, burining much brighter than before as his eyes dart between the two of you. What the hell was this? When had you and Isaac become so close? Close enough to confess each other’s crushes. He grips the solo cup in hand harder, having ignored the bubbling beverage until now.
“You’re only allowed one question Isaac. And you just used it.” You counter matter of factly, leaning back into your chair simultaneously with the blonde. The others watch your interaction intently, all having noticed the tension grow.
“I’m gonna go grab a drink.” Stiles announces suddenly, weaving between the various patio chairs as the attention turns to him.
“Aren’t you driving?” Scott interjects worriedly, not letting the change in his friends demeanor go unnoticed. Stiles pauses, turning on his heel and facing the group of you with a mischievous, somewhat forced smile .
“We can sleep here. Right Lydia? Your mom said you had the cabin for the weekend?”
“Uh, yeah. I only had a few of the guest rooms prepared. But there’s definitely enough room for everyone.” She replies, tone hesitant due to the shift energy.
“Everyone down to stay the night?” Stiles inquires, practically challenging the group to say no.
“Fun!” Lydia interjects before any of you can protest “I’ll set up the rest of the rooms. It’ll be like one big sleepover! Allison, help me grab some pillows and blankets from the basement?” She pulls the raven-haired teen along before she can answer. Shooting you a ‘what the hell just happened’ look before tugging Allison past Stiles and into the house. Leaving you, Scott, Isaac, and Stiles to deal with the lingering tension.
“Back in a sec.” stiles raises his cup in a sort of salute before making his way through the sliding glass door and towards the kitchen.
“Is someone gonna tell me what I’m missing here?” Scott inquires confusedly, looking just as astonished as the girls at how odd the three of you were acting. Scott was your other best friend, and of course knew you’d been crushing on Stiles for ages. But nothing had stemmed from it until now.
“Looks like everyone knows y/n’s crushing except the one she’s crushing on.” Issac offers with a smirk. Laughing when you get out of your seat to playfully shove his head to the side.
“You’re such an ass. I’m going to check on him.” You head towards the kitchen with what little pride you have left, shooting up your middle finger behind your back when you hear the two boys having a laughing fit at something Scott mumbles.
Usually, you’re the one drinking when the lot of you hang out. Lydia and Allison sip on something most times, but of course Isaac and Scott can only do it for taste. Even then, Isaac only takes shots with you to see who won’t make a face at the bitter beverage (bastard always wins). That’s why it’s such a surprise when you walk in the kitchen to see Stiles adding a significant amount of liquor to a fresh cup of soda, eyes boring into the liquid as if it’s just insulted him. Your eyes subtly trace over the way he clenches his jaw, pushing away the butterflies you feel when you observe his veiny hands gripping the cup. Jesus you need to touch some grass
“Easy there. Trying to out-drink me Stilinski?” You push your cup towards him gingerly, putting up your hand to signal him when to stop pouring.
“Something like that.” Stiles mumbles with a tight lipped smile, taking a gulp from the cup and making an insanely dramatic grimace. Shivering and shaking his head violently at the shock of the taste.
“You’re usually not one to drink.” You let it come out as more of a question than a statement, laughing amusedly at his spurratic reactions.
“Yeah, well...” Is all he replies, shrugging before taking another sip. This time only blinking hard to withstand the flavor. Your head cocks to the side in curiosity, holding your tongue before trying to ask what’s up with him. His eyes narrow at your actions, the fiery feeling before burning once more as he takes in your cute expression. Damn you, it’s like you’re trying to get him riled up. Maybe it’s the alcohol, but whatever feelings the brunettes been harboring are starting to bubble over. He figures he’s always had eyes for you, but it wasn’t exactly a convenient time to come to the realization he’d fallen for you. It’d been a long time coming admittedly, but it’s not like he could act on it. Well, maybe he could. He shakes away the lustful thoughts when you lean against the counter beside him. Wearing one of your more revealing tops tonight. He swears you’re doing this shit on purpose.
“Ready to go back out?” You suggest with raised brows, hoping the liquor will brighten his mood. He nods, following you back through the living room and towards the back patio. Surveying the newly placed pillows and blankets beside the couch as he steps out towards the fire pit.
“You’re back, finally! Stiles, it’s your turn to ask someone.” Lydia claps her hands to get your attention. You and Stiles sitting next to each other on one of the couches amongst the undoubtably expensive outdoor furniture.
“Alright. Isaac, truth or dare?” Stiles challenges the blonde from across the fire pit. Isaac smirks, adjusting himself on the couch opposite you.
“You guys know me, I’m mostly an open book. But with they way you’re staring me down, I’ll go with truth and skip out on whatever dare you’re fantasizing about in that big brain of yours.”
Stiles scoffs with a forced smile, just slightly moving closer to you when he sees you and Isaac make what contact.
“Do you have a crush on anyone?”
“Can we do repeat questions?”
“Don’t bullshit me Lahey, answer me.” Stiles isn’t necessarily rude, but doesn’t show any signs of breaking his serious expression when Isaac raises his brows with an amused laugh. He looks over at you, before letting his eyes fall on Allison. You don’t let their intense eye contact go unnoticed, despite it only being for a split second.
“Yeah, I do.” He mutters simply, sitting back in his seat with an uncaring smile. You can tell he is in fact shitting himself internally, being one of the few people able to see through his cocky facade.
Without a juicy enough answer, Lydia begins to give a dare. “Alright Scott, truth or-”
“Can I go again?” Issac interjects, your stomach dropping when you can practically see the gears turning in that mischievous mind of his.
“Well, it’s Scott’s turn to be asked.”
“No worries, the question is for him.”
“Well, alright.” Lydia looks between you and Allison with another ‘what the hell’ expression. Neither of you can think of an answer.
“Okay Scott. Truth or dare?”
“Uh, dare. I guess.” The tanned boy replies, not as amused when the attention turns to him.
“Kiss y/n.” Stiles chokes on his drink before the rest can even react, wiping his mouth with the sleeve of his flannel sheepishly when the rest of you have your eyes on him. Scott gets up from his chair reluctantly, moving towards the couch where you’re sitting and offering you a hand up. You take it with a nervous chuckle, smile brightening when the taller boy grabs the sides of you head a plants a quick peck to your forehead. Each of you giving a respectful bow and courtesy as the group claps.
“What was that?” Isaac teases, amused expression adorning his features at the cute interaction.
“You weren’t specific about it, you just said to kiss her.” Scott explains with a prideful smile, happy to have found a loophole in his dare. He’s always been like a big brother to you, even though you never let him forget you’re a month older.
“I thought it was sweet.” Allison muses, having found the interaction between her ex boyfriend and you simply cute. Of course her and Lydia never fail to point out the way you longingly stare at your sarcastic best friend just about every minute of every day.
“Thank you, thank you. We try our best.” You give another curtsy before sitting back down, tucking your legs under yourself and letting the tops of your knees lean against Stiles’ thigh. His tense shoulders seem to ease at the contact, despite wanting to shoot out across the fire pit and pumble Isaac.
“Okay Allison, truth or dare?” Lydia turns her attention to the brunnette beside her, eager to continue the game.
“Dare.”
“Chug your drink.”
Allison groans, pursing her lips in a small pout and raising her drink to you in suggestion. Seeing as you often participate in chugging contests at Lydia’s infamous parties, you’re not one to step down from the offer.
“Fine, I’ll be your moral support. Stiles, you wanna join?” You’re happy he’s finally trying to let loose, and you’re honestly eager to see a drunk Stiles. He leans over you to see how much liquid is in your cup and Allison’s, nodding when he observes that they all have just about the same amount.
“Why not, don’t expect to win though.” You scoff at his cocky remark, scrambling up from your sitting position and moving over to the speaker playing some pop song quietly.
“I need some motivation, not that this’ll be much of a challenge.” You counter playfully, confidence brightening when your three friends that aren’t participating start placing bills down to bet. With the increase of volume, you can feel the base of the music vibrate beneath your feet as you sit back down beside Stiles.
“Ready? 3, 2 ,1 go!” You’re a bit surprised at Scott’s enthusiasm, but figure he’s just as eager as the others to win his money. Immediately, you Stiles and Allison start gulping down the bitter liquid. You open your eyes for a split second, observing how far your opponents have gotten. Stiles shoots his arm out towards you, playfully trying to knock the cup out of your hand whilst chugging. You do the same, hitting his arm away and tilting your head even farther back to finish. You’re done only a split second before the other two, who finish at the same time, grimacing not only from defeat but by the foreign bitter taste. You raise your empty cup as playful whoops erupt from the spectators.
“That’s my girl.” Isaac cheers idly, bumping the sides of his fist with your own as he happily collects his earnings.
“Don’t I get a percentage? I did all the work!”
“y/l/n, they don’t pay the race horses. All the money goes to the lucky better.”
“I should have put my money on you.” Scott groans, laughing when Stiles playfully shoves him.
“I was close, she cheated!” Stiles excitedly argues, and you’re glad his mood has improved since before.
“Like hell we were, she killed us. And I for one will not be participating. I’m definitely placing a bet though.” Allison retorts, reaching into her wallet for cash.
“Do you really want to be embarrassed again Stiles? I’m not going easy on you.”
“Bring it on y/n/n.”
*****
“Okay, we’re officially turning in. Will you guys be okay?” Lydia yawns as she finishes, Scott and Allison getting up as well.
“What? The party was just getting st-started!” Stiles hiccups with raised arms.
“Sti, it’s 2 in the morning. We all need to get some rest for the drive tomorrow.” Scott explains, ruffling his drunken best friends hair and chuckling when he slowly swats his hands away.
“Whatever dad. You’ll stay up with me?” Stiles turns to you with a hopeful expression, eyebrows furrowing when Scott distracts you with a kiss to the top of your head.
“You’re okay to get him to bed?” He asks whilst ignoring Stiles’ offended expression at the notion, turning to head inside when you nod.
“I would stay, but then I’d be a third wheel so...Night!” Isaac chimes with a charming grin, dodging your attempt at hitting him and planting a quick kiss to your temple before rushing inside. You and Stiles mumble reluctant replies when the rest of the pack shouts their good-nights, their absence bumming you out.
“Lame.” You simultaneously deadpan, giggling into your cups at the jinx. The fire’s only embers by now, a chill running down your spine at the sudden, cool summer night air.
“Mmm.” Stiles hums through the his cup, attempting to shrug off his flannel whilst holding the plastic between his teeth. “Take this, it’s cold.” You shake your head quickly, dizzying at the movement.
“I’m fine, if I took it you’d be cold.” You giggle when he rolls his eyes, cup in his mouth slashing a little bit of liquid down his chin when he continues to try and maneuver out of the fabric. “You’re such a lightweight.”
“Am n-not!” He hiccups between words, mumbling due to the plastic still clenched between his teeth. You laugh again, shuffling across the couch to help him out of the shirt. You know he’ll only persist if you refuse again, deciding to give in to his stubborn behavior instead of arguing. You get his arm that’s closest the you out of the first sleeve, reaching across his lap to help remove the other.
Stiles is instantly overwhelmed with the scent of that sweet perfume you’re always wearing. The heat emanating from your body disorienting him for moment before he remembers the cup still in his mouth. You finally get his other arm free, sitting back on your legs only to meet his droopy brown eyes. He looks a little stunned, and you realize the alcohol’s made you a bit more bold than usual. His face is only inches away, close enough for you to smell the alcohol on his tongue. Slowly, he removes the cup from his mouth, eyes never leaving yours. You take a sharp intake of breath, the air between ou tingling with some sort of buzz as your eyes avert down to his now visible lips. His eyes go down too, and you’re reminded of the wrap shirt Lydia had forced you to borrow, exposing a bit more chest than you’re used to. He clears his throat shuffling mere centimetres closer to you as his hands move towards your neck. This is it, he’s finally going to-
“You’re necklace, it’s messed up.” His voice cracks as he speaks, and you try not to completely deflate when he clears his throat gain as he clumsily drags the chain so the charm is back against the soft skin between your collarbones.
“Oh, thanks.” You internally cringe at how disappointed you sound, shrugging on the warm fabric of his flannel and leaning back against the couch.
******
You’re sitting on the counter and watching amusedly as Stiles clumsily searches the cabinets for something to eat.
“These people eat like hamsters, where’s the junk food?” He whines, exasperated from his mere 30 second search.
“Sti?”
“Hmm?”
“Truth or drink.” He let’s out another whine at your words, giving up on his search and leaning against the counter across you expectantly. Admittedly, he’s pretty tipsy and nearing drunk, not to mention pretty pissed that he chickened out earlier. He feigns annoyance when you nibble on your thumb to think of a question, heart melting when he observes how your feet kick in the air as the dangle off the counter top.
“Kiss marry kill. Isaac, Derek, and Scott.” He groans at your words, lips upturning to a smirk when you giggle into your cup.
“Can’t I just marry Scott, then kill Isaac and Derek?” He tries to argue but you immediately shake your head, expectant of a complete answer. “Fine. Kiss Derek, marry Scott, and kill Isaac.”
“Why Isaac?”
“Because he’s an ass, and he wears scarves in the summer. My turn.” You roll your eyes at his words, awaiting his question.
“Do you have a crush on Isaac?” Your eyebrows furrow in shock, shaking your head and laughing loudly at the notion. Sure, Isaac was hot, but you’d never had that sort of feelings for each other. He was more like a brother if anything, just like Scott. Stiles seems surprised at your answer, persisting the moment you quiet down. “Then who was he talking about before?”
“It’s actually my turn, no double questions. What were you so mad about before?” If he wanted to get personal, you might as well match the energy. He rolls his shoulders at the question, bringing the cup to his lips to hide his smile when you throw your hands up in defeat.
“Coward.” you grimace playfully, pouting when he only shrugs at your insult.
He jumps, startled when you gasp suddenly and reach over the counter. Turning up the volume on the stereo from before you’d brought inside. ‘Wolves’ by one direction, plays much louder now that you’ve turned the notch on the device.
“Oh my god, why?” Stiles dramatically looks up to the ceiling when you hop off the counter in excitement. Of course, he recalls the first time he’d heard the song. You’d forced him and Scott to listen to it in the jeep one night, saying it was just too ironic to not make it ‘your song.’ And whether him or Scott want to admit it or not, they’d belted out the lyrics with you a few times before.
You’re grabbing his hands before he can protest farther, rolling up the baggy sleeves of his flannel for the umpteenth time that evening as you begin to move to the opening notes, pulling him along with you. You thank the alcohol for your surge of confidence and the easy sway of your hips, grateful for the liquid courage.
“You totally love this song!” You shout over the music, too drunk to care if the others are awoken by your antics.
“Totally don’t!” Stiles retorts just as loud, laughing when you raise his arm so you can spin under it. Beginning to bob his head and mumbling the lyrics you’re currently shouting.
In the middle of the night when the wolves come out, headed straight for your heart like a bullet in the dark.
One by one, I gotta take them down,
We can run and hide, ain’t going down without a fight
You both howl obnoxiously with the music, jumping and spinning as it booms through the speakers. The alcohols hitting now, effectively loosening his muscles and making the both of you laugh obnoxiously at how stupid you probably look. Despite the silliness of it all, it’s the most at ease Stiles has felt in a while. There’s a certain energy you bring, a type of way you make him feel that’s always drawn you so close. You stumble over to the stereo when the third verse comes on, grin not leaving your lips when you feel his reluctance to let go of your hand. You turn the music down, not familiar enough with the remaining verses to be able to sing it. Besides, you were lucky enough Lydia hadn’t come down there, slippers and all, to scold you both to bed.
“That’s it? There’s more to the song!”
“I thought you didn’t like it?” You pant out, both out breath as you move beside him to lean against the counter once more.
“I-I don’t, just like dancing with you.” He blurts out, too intoxicated to care to filter his words. You study the spacey look in his eyes, cheeks flushed from the alcohol and exhilaration. It’s funny, a few months ago this would’ve just been any other sleepover with your best friend. But it’s different now, you can only assume he too has noticed the shift in energy between you. The electricity
“Sti?”
“Hmm?”
“Truth or dare.”
“Wh-what?” He turns to face you, brows furrowing at your hopeful eyes.
“Truth or dare.”
“We’re still doing this?”
“Just say dare!” You persist, hitting his chest in annoyance. The alcohol’s coursing through your veins, giving you too much confidence for your own good.
“Fine, dare.” He’s confused at your change in behavior, not recognizing the mischievous expression on your face.
“Kiss me.”
And that’s when Stiles Stilinski, Romeo himself, pukes into the kitchen sink.
*********
“I am not th-that drunk.” He stops mid sentences, clutching his chest and pausing to suppress a particularly violent hiccup.
“Sure Sti, tell that to the vomit on your shirt.” You huff out, half listening to the belligerent boy towering over you as you guide him towards the bathroom. He’s gotten significantly drunker while you were cleaning the sink, all the alcohol finally catching up to his inexperienced self. And sure, the slurred words and tousled hair was cute at first, but now he was a much too heavy toddler you were practically dragging to the bathroom.
“I wan’ sleep.” You fumble out a laugh at his childish demeanor, shuffling into the guest bathroom and flipping on the switch to illuminate the area, much to the drunk boy’s distaste as his droopy eyes adjust to the light. Admittedly, your’re also significantly intoxicated, thought process definitely a little slower than usual. Luckily, you’ve had enough experience to know when to cut yourself off.
“You can sleep after I get you to stop reeking of vomit, now arms up.” You order sternly, heart melting when his lips puff into a small pout at your words. He does as told, lanky arms high up in the air as you hastily pull the fabric up and over his head, careful not to get the throw up anywhere else on him. You run the cotton under the sink, wreching at the smell. The things you do for your friends
When his shirt is thoroughly washed, you diligently wring it out and hang it on the rack with the hand towels beside the counter. Crouching down to inspect the cabinet under the sink for anything to clean yourselves up with. You grab a small washcloth and a spare bottle of mouthwash, placing the items on the counter and meeting Stiles’ gaze. He’s a bit zoned out, but he’s smiling sweetly down at you as he watches you work.
“You’re like, really pretty.”
“And you totally can’t handle you’re liquor.” You retort with a roll of your eyes, pushing away the butterflies his words release. “Now swish and spit, your breath stinks.” Without as much of a fuss, he takes the bottle and does as instructed, letting out a dramatic ‘aah’ and giggling when you meet eyes in the mirror. You follow after him, figuring that’d have to be the maximum dental hygeine for the night considering the time crunch. You grab the rag from the counter, running it under the water and lathering soap into it before lifting it towards the boy beside you.
“Can I wash you off real quick?” You wait for his nod of approval, chuckling at the hilarity of the situation s you run the warm rag across his upper chest. “This’ll be one hell of a story.”
“Mmm.” He only hums in response, looking down at you intently, serious expression making your head tilt to the side in question.
“What?”
“Nothin, just sorry I didn’t kiss you.” Your movements halt at his words, continuing when you turn your attention back down to your task instead of his eyes.
“Told you I could out drink you. Next time don’t challenge me to shots.”
“N-noted.”
******
“Shhhh!” Your eyes are wide in warning as you make your way down the hall, arms wrapped around Stiles in support as he stumbles along with you.
“Shhh-shhh.” He mimics your actions, bringing a clumsy finger to his lips as you hold back a laugh. Finally, you set him down on the bed, turning towards the guest room dresser and tossing the sweats and t shirt Lydia must have left there to him. He groans, quickly undressing and tugging on the new clothes. Laying back down on the bed and throwing his forearm to cover his eyes as you change into Lydia’s spare shorts, figuring the shirt and flannel you still had on were sufficient enough as pjs.
You and Scott had fallen asleep during late nights at Stiles’ house numerous times whilst investigating Beacon Hills latest supernatural threat. So it’s not surprising when Stiles clumsily shuffles under the silky duvet with a satisfied sigh, lifting the covers so you can climb in next to him. It’s a queen sized bed, much bigger than the creaky twin you’ve shared before. Still, Stiles moves even closer, you’re well aware he’ll only fall asleep if he’s in the very middle of the mattress. It’s quiet, and you happily settle into the covers as sleep tugs at your eyelids. Only opening one eye when the boy beside you turns onto his side to face you.
“You know y/n, I miss when we were little. L-like when we used to dress up in our moms clothes, and then I twisted my ankle wearing my moms heels.” You chuckle fondly at his slurred retelling of the memory, images flashing by of when you were kids. He studies you, trying to commit the sweet laugh to memory before continuing. “I mean, I like where we are now. I do, because we’re still best friends and I still love you.”
“I love you too Sti.”
“N-no, no you don’t get it.” He shakes his head vigorously, drunken state dramatizing his movements as he argues. Sounding almost solemn at your response. “I mean I love you, and it’s terrifying. A pretty new revaluation might I add, so I thought getting drunk might help. Am I drunk?”
“Yes, very much so. And you should sleep before you say something-”
“No! I meas you have to know this. What if like, I never told you and then...Well I never would have told you! That’s like, Shakespeare tragedy bullshit and we’re definitely better than that. So, I love you. And not in the ‘we took baths together and played dress up in our moms clothes’ type love. It’s the ‘I’m always confused because you give me this...Weird tingly feeling and I never know how to go about it and it makes me want to kiss you’ type of love...I guess. Am I like, really drunk?” You’re to say the least stunned with his confession, though the various hiccups in between sentences didn’t call for the most romantic ambiance.
“Yeah, you’re pretty wasted.” You smooth out his messy hair, too exhausted (and tipsy) to want to accept any of this is actually happening.
“Sorry I didn’t kiss you. The vomiting was unrelated to you making a move on me, just so we’re clear.” He croaks out, voice rasped from the lull of oncoming slumber.
“And here I was thinking I made you nauseous.”
“No, you do give me butterflies though. Too pretty.” He muses, chuckling when you push away his face, nose having booped yours to accentuate his point. It can’t be legal to be this cute while intoxicated.
“You gotta close your eyes Sti, have to sleep off all this alcohol.”
“M’kay. You’ll stay with me the whole night?”
“Always.”
**********
It’s fairly early when you finally wake, sunlight seeping into the room from the early morning light. You want more than anything to go back to bed, figuring another hour would help ware off the pounding headache tormenting your skull. Only assuming Stiles must feel even worse. It’s then, when you try to shuffle closer into his body warmth, that you realize the bed is empty. The space where he’s laid beside you is still warm, and you reluctantly sit up with the harsh reality that everyone else must be awake too.
You follow the scent of bacon to the kitchen, immediately met with a very grumpy looking Stiles hunched over a cup of coffee. He’s wearing Scott’s lacrosse hoodie, sunglasses covering his eyes and hood pulled over his head to shield himself from any intruding light. You sit down on the stool of the island he’s leaning against, offering a sympathetic smile when he pushes the steaming mug towards you with a grunt.
“Morning everyone!” Isaac chimes with a bright smile, slapping the two of you on the back as you simultaneously groan.
“Late night?”
“You know, I’m usually appreciative of the cheeky sarcasm Scott. But if you don’t wipe that smirk off your face right now, I will seriously consider castrating you.” You stare down the alpha, not even phasing his cheerful demeanor.
“Well before you do that, have some breakfast.” Allison only laughs when the two of you gladly pull the plates she’s placed in front you closer with a genuine murmur of ‘thank yous’. Eager to have the food soak up the alcohol and rid you of the awful hangover.
“And this is why I don’t drink.” Lydia retorts, placing down a bottle of Advil between you with a playful roll of her eyes.
“Speaking of, what was that music last night? Scared me half to death.” Allison inquires, looking to the others with a knowing smile when you and Stiles laugh through a forkful of hash browns, eyes on each other and avoiding the others. The two of you might not see it, but you’re practically married with how in sync you are. Always giving each other side eye when approached by someone you both hate, finishing each others sentences. You make a perfect pair, if only one of you had the balls to act on it.
“Flannel looks good on you y/n.” Isaac snickers, tugging on your elongated sleeve with a grin. Only more amused when you flip him off in silence.
“You know, none of the guys I’ve hooked up with have never offered me their shirts.” Lydia pouts while pushing around the eggs on her plate, shocked when you and Stiles simultaneously choke on your (now individual) coffees.
“We, we didn’t hook up!” Stiles defends, now unable to meet your mortified gaze.
“Well, I know that I just mean-”
“Hold on. Am I missing something here? You two have seriously never...I mean never?” Isaac looks genuinely bewildered as he rambles on, Allison and Scott not so discreetly giggling into their mugs as the conversation continues.
“No!”
“Seriously? I’m always teasing because I figured it was all just unspoken knowledge.” The blonde’s genuinely intrigued, not noticing Lydia’s persistent signals to stop talking. “Scott, you’re telling me you can’t smell the sexual ten-”
“OKAY, we’ll be leaving now. Lydia, thank you for having us-”
“And thank you for the liquor we’re seriously regretting right now.” You finish the farewell for Stiles, grabbing your things and headed out the door before any of them can protest.
“See you at home!” Scott yells out, still finding the situation between his best friends hilarious.
“And always use protect-” Isaac’s voice is cut off when Stiles slams the front door behind him, the both of you trudging towards the jeep. The boy letting out another groan and pinching his nose when you pull the door shut a little too hard, loud noise ringing in his ears.
You fumble through the glove compartment when he pulls out of the long driveway and towards the road, satisfied when you find a spare pair of sunglasses under a pile of crumpled papers.
“You keep this up and I won’t have any more clothes.”
“To be fair, you insisted I put this on.” You argue, referring to the cotton shirt wrapped around you. “How much do you remember of last night anyway?” He chuckles at your question, rubbing his hand over his jaw in contemplation.
“Geez, well there was truth or dare with everyone. They turned in early and you and I hung outside a bit longer. I was...Looking for food in the kitchen and there was dnacing? And I’m pretty sure there was a bathroom involved.”
“You may or may not have puked in Lydia’s sink.” Stiles slaps a hand over his face at your words, laughing along with you when he sees your amusement in his new-found knowledge.
“I’m so sorry, was I a total pain?”
Of course not! You only confessed your love to me like you were expressing a new hobby in which you now have no recollection of.
“Nah, I helped you clean up and then we went to bed. Besides, you’ve taken care of my drunk ass plenty of times.” He observes you in small glances he can get between looking at the road. You seem as though you’re holding back.
To be honest, you were a bit frustrated. On one hand, you could just be honest with him and explain hat he’d said. But he was wasted, and it felt wrong to confess for him. Besides, if he wanted to act on his feelings he would have. And that definitely hurt, but it probably meant he had the same concerns as you. Being best friends made this shit complicated. With everything going on in this town, you had a lot of responsibilities to withhold. You couldn’t afford to lose each other. Ironically, you loved each other too much to risk starting a relationship.
“Sti, you just passed my neighborhood.”
“Yeah. It’s still early and I’m not waiting for this hangover to pass alone. We’re going to my place.”
“Star Wars and pizza?”
“Star Wars and pizza.”
*********
“I’m just saying, the amount of accidental incest in medi is actually uncanny.”
“You bring this up every time we watch A New Hope.”
“I know, but seriously!” He shuffles on his bed, pushing away the pizza box with only a few pieces of crust remaining inside. “Just like that movie you’re always making me watch. The one with the girl and her step-brother.”
“Hey! I told you, Clueless is so much better when you pretend Josh is just a family friend!”
“But we shouldn’t have to pretend it wasn’t originally written about two step siblings falling in love. I mean, what kind of trope is that?”
“Fair enough, I guess old rich white men all have a thing for their siblings.”
“Gross, I’m officially grossed out.” When your laughter settles down, Stiles starts to mess with his fingers. Looking between you and his lap as if debating with his next words.
“Listen, are you sure I didn’t...Say anything last night?” You shift uncomfortably under his gaze, figuring you could at least tell your own truth without completely exposing his.
“Stiles, we were both pretty drunk. I don’t know, I guess something could have happened?”
“How do you mean?” You’re unsettled with how awkward this has all become. But it’s not like this could keep going unsaid. It was too much of a weight to be concealing all of this from him. Stiles was the person you went to for a good vent, and you can’t really vent to your best friend about...Well, being in love with your best friend.
“I may have possibly, maybe asked you to kiss me. And you might have thrown up right after the offer.” His eyes bulge in surprise, and you cover your face with a strained cry at the confession. “It’s your fault for asking!” You whine, instantly regretting saying anything in the first place. This was dumb, you were totally dumb, and no you looked like a complete fool, all because of stupid Stiles.
“Hey.” His voice is soft when he pulls your hands down, mischievous smirk utterly confusing you. “Truth or dare?”
“You do remember! You asshole!” You shout instantly, slapping at his chest as he laughs.
“Woah, woah wait. I may have remembered a bit more than I mentioned in the car. But how was I supposed to know you actually wanted to kiss me or if it was the tequila talking? I figured maybe if you told me the truth, then I’d know if you really meant it.” You stare at him blankly, not nearly as amused as he is.
“If it’s any consolation, you look really cute when you’re pissed at me.”
“Charming, Stilinksi. Do you happen to remember the part where your blacked out ass gave an entire monologue about how in love with me you are? And how sorry you were that you didn't kiss-” With that, he takes hod of the side of your face and connects your lips to his Finally releasing whatever tension that’s been building for agonizing months. It’s nice, really nice, but he’s not getting away that easy. You smack his chest again, fighting the urge to pull him back into you when you observe how flushed he looks.
“Ow, stop hitting me! I had to do something, you were embarrassing me!”
“Good! I’m glad you feel a smidge of what I do, Romeo. You’re just gonna kiss me?”
“I’m sorry, should I not have? Did I totally just misread that?”
“N-no. I mean, I wanted to kiss you. But I figured the only reason you hadn’t said something sooner...Or sober, was because you were afraid of what I was afraid of. With all the shit we go through, I wouldn’t ever want to jeopardize our friendship.” He’s silent at that, trying to find a way in which to convey his thoughts.
“Y/n, we’re a part of the pack. Nothing can break that bond. No matter what, you’re my best friend first. Whatever shit come our way next, we’ll know how to handle it together, like we always do. Besides, if I ever hurt you Scott and Isaac would make sure I never saw the light of day again.” You chuckle softly at his words, feeling a weight you hadn’t known was there lifted off your shoulders.
“I think this is the part where you ask the final truth or dare.”
“Well, I would dare you to kiss me, but you have to promise you wont puke again.”

Writer...
You have Character A and Character B spontaneously develop a soul bond. This takes place after Character B catches Character A committing some minor infractions, which does not impress Character B.
The elders of Character B's are horrified by Character A's background as a commoner and servant as well as his acts of mischief. This results in the soul bond being deliberately broken, something that is very shaming and also extremely, continuously chronically painful for Character A.
You have set it up so that
a) Character A is put in constant proximity to someone who is literally causing him pain equal to being beaten.
b) Character B keeps finding a reason to grab Character A.
c) Character A simultaneously believes that no one is aware that a deliberately broken soul bond, and yet does not tell Character B that the constant grabbing and also constant proximity is giving him a migraine.
d) For some reason, despite the debilitating pain, and his initial upset and horror that the elders broke the bond instead of just sending him away which would be the more usual punishment--to the point he rejects Character B as a soulmate in return--He's still hanging around character B.
Now:
Points A through C could be fixed by Character A telling B that he is causing A pain. OR since this behavior of not revealing information seems to be a habit brought on by past rejection, you could have Character A consider the possibility of telling him--or anyone--then decide not to, because under the belief that Character B or anyone else wouldn't care. This could be foreshadowing for a future even where it is very dramatically revealed that Character A is in agony, or Character A could decide to leave because it's physically painful to be anywhere near Character B.
Point D needs to be addressed. You have a situation where Character A goes, "well if you hate me that much, I don't want anything to do with you either!" I feel Character A should probably stick to his guns on that for a bit longer than half a damn paragraph. Unwilling attraction/attraction despite something that is causing actual pain needs some build-up.
Lemme give you an example:
So! ElfQuest. The elves in this comic book series have a Fuck or Die clause called "Recognition." Since elves have such a small gene pool this keeps Bad Shit from happening as a result of inbreeding. Recognition is great if you happen to be in love or at least serious like with your partner, and it's a prerequisite for the elf equivalent of marriage.
Recognition, however, can happen between people who a)really actually hate each other and/or b) met due to a combination of an epic misunderstanding and desperation.
This is what happened between Cutter, Chief of a tribe called Wolfriders, and Leetah, healer for a tribe called the Sun Folk. Cutter and his tribe have been journeying across the desert slowly dying of dehydration when they come across the Sun Folk village. Due to generational trauma, the Wolfriders at first think the Sun Folk are humans and since humans have a tendency to kill first and talk never when it comes to elves they decide to raid the Sun Folk.
Leetah, who was at the well to get water gets accidentally kidnapped by Cutter. Yes. Accidentally. You see, the instant he saw Leetah, he Recognized her and the next thing he knows he's slung her over his wolf and run off with her. He fetches up with his tribesfolk and literally does not realize he's carrying a girl and not the damn water jug.
This is...not an auspicious first meeting and the first section of the Quest is just Cutter trying to fix the stupid he got himself in, while Leetah is freaked out, angry and unwillingly attracted to the idiot barbarian himbo who is trying to apologize for his stupid. (There's also a whole bit with Leah's boyfriend Rayek, who is an arrogant little shit..but pretty justified in being pissy with Cutter for his little raid on the village.)
The thing here is that this entire Cutter/Leetah thing is a very slow build. Both parties are absolutely baffled by each other. Leetah is infuriated and enraged by Cutter's actions, and she's only moved to pity for the Wolfrider situation when she sees how badly injured one of the Wolfriders is.
There are some intense cultural differences here and there are some things about the Wolfriders that are utterly horrifying to Leetah (which we don't find out about in detail until the third section of the story.) It takes time to go from absolute dislike/mutual anger-confusion to "okay, despite everything, I am going to pursue this" and you need to make it clear *why the character is doing this despite the obstacles.*
In the case of Recognition: if we don't do the dirty we gonna get sick and die and also there won't be more little elves.
What's the case for a soul bond that was deliberately broken by the family of one of the parties?

not her choice, part 2 | n.r.
part 2, part 1 here
summary: y/n and natasha will do anything for love, whether they realize it or not
warnings: nsfw themes, angst, brainwashing, violence, kidnapping, y/n and nat making dramatic calls, injury, basically "fuck" in different contexts
word count: 7,354
(sorry this is long I didn't want to split it up into more parts, not proofread as always)
(ALSO SIDE NOTE LOOK AT HER HANDS MY LESBIANISM IS FUCKING SCREAMING)
"You're pulling your punches." The man in stars, you now know as steve rogers, says as he stands across from you, nose bloody and shield in hand. You raise an eyebrow being your mask, as if asking him "You want me to stop?" After a pause, he nods his head and gets back into a fighting stance. "Please, continue."
Ever since that little..ahem..incident with Natasha, she's been telling you to not hurt her teammates, even though most of them have superpowers you might add, so you've been pulling your punches in fights ever since. You still beat their asses it was just..a lighter beating. You were treading in dangerous waters here, knowing that if Hydra suspects you even in the slightest bit they'll bring you back to the lab and wipe your mind again.
You dodge a swing from Steves shield and quickly knock him off balance, playing more defense than offense at this point. The Avenger quickly regains his traction and charges at you, tackling you to the ground so that the wind gets knocked out of you. You, as best as you can, try to dodge his punches on the ground, genuinely surprised when the asphalt underneath you sinks in with his punch. When his fist sinks into the ground once more, you grab his torso and use your legs to shove him off of you, landing a punch in that all-American boy face of his once you get on top of him. Instead of beating the man bloody like you would usually do, you shove yourself up and move away from him, trying to spot Natasha in all the chaos.
Your search stops when you hear Natasha's voice from behind you, her words being accompanied with a punch. "Hey." The punch isn't enough to hurt you but its enough to grab your attention as you turn around and grab her arm. Your grip is firm but not uncomfortable, letting Nat know that they hadn't brainwashed you yet. "Hey." You reply back, throwing a punch that she easily blocked. "You still with me?" She asks as her hand grabbing your wrist twists it back. "I let the guy with the metal arm beat me up twice, what do you think?" You say as you hit her stomach to make her stumble back.
The hits are hard but not fatal as Natasha moves to kick you in the stomach, you easily grabbing her leg and pulling her down to the ground. You land on top of her and you grin, "You've gotten soft, Romanoff." You tease in a breathy laugh as you see her quirk an eyebrow up. "Don't pretend like I can't kick your ass with my eyes closed, y/l/n." She says as she quickly shifts her weight and pins you down, an amused look on her face. "How come you always end up on your back when I'm with you?" She asks and you roll your eyes, scoffing but also realizing how true she is. Before you can reply there's comm's static in your ears, a Hydra officer barking the command to move out.
"I've got to go." You say as Nat gets off of you, hopping back up and making sure you've got your gun in it's holster. "Where will you be tonight?" Natasha asks as you fix yourself, her statement causing you to shoot her a teasing look under your mask. "You'll find me Romanoff." And with that, you turn and leave, not needing to look back to see the amused look on the red-heads face.
--------
"Couldn't find any more shitty hotels?" Natasha asks as she sees you standing behind a run-down gas station, chewing on some gum that you bought with the change you found on the sidewalk. "They were all booked." You shrugged, lips turning up a bit at the sight of your favorite person. "Mm, come here." Natasha hums as she reaches you, gently pulling you in by your chin to kiss you.
These secret meetings have been happening for a while now, being both beneficial to the two of you and the Avengers.
You immediately told Natasha about Hydra's plan about building the next atomic weapon soon after her head came up from between your thighs, the redhead listening intently as you spill all of Hydra's intel. That's when she told you about them, the Avengers, and how they protect the world from Hydra and otherworldly threats. She said she might introduce you to them sometime, saying that the people there don't see others for their worst mistakes.
At that point in time though, you didn't care what side you were on, as long as Natasha was there you would fight alongside her. That's how it was like for your entire life, not caring about the sides of good or evil, only ever caring about Natasha and keeping her safe.
You wince at her action and she pulls back immediately, a concerned look on her face as she looks for the cause of your pain. It's then when she sees the blossoming bruise on your jaw, right where her fingertips grazed when she pulled you in. "Who did this?" She asked and you shrug, reaching up to touch the purple and red spot. "The guy with the metal arm, it really packs a punch." You reply as you see the worry lines deepen between her brows, causing you to cup her neck and pull her in for a soft kiss. "I'm alright Nat." You whisper, kissing her a few more times before leaning back. "I've gone through worse." You say and she frowns, intertwining her free hand with yours as cars pass by. "Haven't we all." Nat sighs and you nod, running your thumb along the back of her hand.
-------
"Fuck! Tasha!"
You grip the back of the headboard as Natasha brings you to another orgasm, knuckle deep inside of you as she kisses your chest lustfully. "That's it, good girl." The redhead hums as your chest rises and falls, you trying to catch your breath as Natasha's fingers start to gradually slow down. Cum coats your inner thighs and sweat sheens your skin in regards to the many times Natasha has made you cum in the past few hours, finally deciding that you've had enough when she fully pulls her fingers out.
"God you have a lot of stamana." You laugh as your breathing finally calms down, moving your hand to pull her into a deep kiss. "I still have a lot more in me, y'know." Natasha hums as she moves to kiss your jaw, trailing it down your neck as she peppers kisses along the flushed skin. "I know just- just give me a minute." You breaths out as you let your eyes fluttered closed, liking the feeling of Natasha laying between your legs as she praises your skin.
It's not long after when your arousal starts to build again, deciding to take the initiative by gently bringing Nat's lips up to yours. "Natalia." You say breathily, your free hand intertwining with Natasha's hair. "Zachem tebe moy golub'?" She asks, heat pooling in her stomach as she feels you tug at her roots. "Ya tak khochu tebya trakhnut', Tasha." Your tone is filled with lust as you kiss Nat deeper, teeth tugging at lips and tongues meeting one another. "Mm bud' moim gostem." She hums and you grin, flipping Natasha over so she's on her back. You look at her for a second and smile, causing her to give you a curious look. "What are you looking at?" She asks with a small smile and you shrug, "You." You hum before kissing her, your teeth tugging at her bottom lip as your hands move down south.
"My god you're cheesy."
-------
"Nat, wait up." Steve catches up with Natasha as she's walking down the compound hallway, the assassin slowing down her stride as the super-soldier gets in step with her. That little action is enough to tell Steve to continue, taking a moment to contemplate his words before speaking. "So..y/n." He starts off slow to see Natashas reaction, deciding that it was okay when the redhead kept a straight face.
"What about her?" She asks and Steve purses his lips together, thinking for a moment before grabbing Nat by the arm and pulling her into a storage closet. "What the hell, Rogers?" Nat asks as Steve closes the door behind them, his voice going down to a whisper as he speaks.
"I know you've been seeing her, Tasha." He starts off and Nat only furrows her brows, looking up annoyedly at the man. "I don't know what you're talking about." She says and he raises his eyebrow. "You're not being discrete Nat. I've seen you fight before and what you do with her is not it. You've knocked down people twice your size before but let her fight you like it's some sparring session." Steve says and Natasha opens her mouth to interject. "She's trained with me in the Red Room, of course she's going to be on my level-" "And that too. After every encounter we have with them you disappear for the evening, usually not arriving until 3 am with Hydra information given to you by your "inside source."" He finishes and Natasha sighs, knowing that she's been caught.
"Okay fine, you want to know the truth?" She asks in a low voice and he nods his head, waiting for Natasha to give her explanation. "I've been- fuck- I've been meeting with her after missions. She used to be brainwashed by Hydra but she broke out of it, hence the reason she's giving me information on Hydra's plans." She says and he stays quiet, the puzzle pieces clicking together as Natasha continues. "I've missed her, Steve, after all these years so I go to make sure she's okay and..other things." Her sentence trails off as she doesn't want to reveal her sex life to her best friend.
"Other things?" Cap raises his eyebrow and Tasha rolls her eyes. "We..comfort each other in not safe for work ways." She says and Steve looks confused for a moment before his mouth opens in a soft "oh- ohhh." "Just please don't tell the team, Steve. You out of all people should understand what it's like to have someone you..care about..taken by Hydra." Nat says and Steve's face softens, a gentle sigh escaping his lips before a grin breaks across it.
"Is this love, Agent Romanoff?" He asks and she shakes her head, stepping back to grab the door handle. "Love is for children, Rodgers, this is just.." She pauses, trying to find the correct word for the situation that she's in. "Comfort?" He offers and she nods her head, opening the door fully. "Comfort."
------
You watch Natasha with curious eyes as she towel dries her hair, you only being dressed in underwear and a bra as you lay stomach-down on the bed. It had been a particularly hard fight that day, Hydra pushing to take bigger strides in their next big war machines. The Avengers, of course, came in and tried to stop them and they conveniently broke into the base that you were being held at.
You were there being punished for your recent behavior, Hydra officers treating you like an animal as they kicked and hit you. "It needs to be put back into it's place." They practically spat at you like you were some sort of monster, threatening you with knifes to your throat as they criticized every breath you took. The next time they send you into the lab, you know you're going to get brainwashed, waiting for the scale to tip as you sat there helplessly watching. You just found Natasha after years of suffering and you weren't too keen on forgetting her.
A soft hand against your back pulls you back into reality as you see where Natasha's soft gaze is looking at, her fingertips gently tracing the scars along your back. "What are you looking at?" You ask even though it's pretty obvious, Natasha's emerald eyes meeting yours. "Who did this to you?" She asks with furrowed brows and you shrug one shoulder. "You want me to give you a list?" You joke half-heartedly as she moves across the bed, gently straddling your back as you feel her fingertips map out your scars. The feeling makes you hum contently, your eyes fluttering closed as Natasha touches you like the most delicate thing in the world.
Nat has never been the soft type, choosing to show her love through reassuring shoulder pats and quiet comfort instead of gushy romantic acts. That's why it genuinely surprises you when you feel a soft kiss placed on your back, right where a stab wound was a few years ago. "I'm gonna kill every single one of them." She mumbles and you can't help the laugh that escapes your lips, your head turning to look over your shoulder. "I know." You hum, a feeling of déjà vu washing over you.
------
"Kto sdelal eto s toboy?"
Who did this to you?
Natasha's voice is clipped as she holds your chin with her fingers, seeing you try and blink back the tears that threaten to fall. Your nose is bruised and bleeding, the skin under your eyes starting to turn purple and red.
"Anastasiya."
Your voice is barely above a whisper as rage burns in Natasha's eyes. Anastasiya is one of the older girls in the Red Room, almost four years older than you and a good five heads taller. You had beaten her when you were sparring but as soon as no one else was looking she got you cornered, making the other girls her age hold you down as she took out her rage on you.
"Ona bol'she nikogda ne prikosnetsya k tebe, kogda ya zakonchu s ney."
She will never touch you again when I'm done with her.
You know that tone on Natasha, knowing that Anastasiya is going to have more than one bend in her arm when Natasha gets done with her.
"Nat, ne nado. U tebya budut problemy, i ya spravlyus' sam."
Nat, don't. You're going to get in trouble and I can handle myself.
Natasha's face softens a bit as she looks at you, her other hand coming up to rub your shoulder.
"YA znayu, pauchok, no pozvol' mne napomnit' yey."
I know, little spider, but let me give her a reminder.
-------
"But-" You start and she nods her head. "But you can handle yourself, I know." Natasha says, moving up a bit to kiss your shoulder. “No, what I was going to say was that they all died shortly after.” You say and she laughs softly against your skin, mumbling a “good girl” as she goes to kiss your cheek. Her lips conveniently land on the scar she gave you all those years ago, the thin line going along your cheekbone.
"That, you did yourself." You say teasingly but you can see her face drop a bit, her lips peppering over the scarred skin. "I'm sorry." She whispers but you shake your head, turning under her so you can face her. "It's okay Nat, we were young and they forced us to train with knives. Shit happens." You say nonchalantly, hands playing with the hem of her tank top. It's then when you see the scars on Natasha's skin, bullet wounds and cuts littering her skin. She notices your gaze and moves her hand down to hold yours, seeing your brows furrow.
You glance up at Natasha and feel your chest tighten as you see her look down at your intertwined hands, her thumb gently brushing up and down the back of your hand. "Your hands have changed." Natasha states under her breath as she glances up at you briefly, seeing you raise an eyebrow in question. "What do you mean?" You ask and Natasha holds your intertwined hands up.
"See, there's more scars on your knuckles and there's a new cut right here." She says and you nod your head, not really noticing the changes until now. "The last time I saw you, they were so much different." She mumbles and you raise an eyebrow, a slightly amused look on your face. "Since when have you paid so much attention to my hands?" You ask and she shrugs, your heart rate speeding up as you watch Natasha's fingers play with your own.
--------
"YA skazal tebe, chto u tebya budut problemy."
I told you that you'd get in trouble.
You hum as you gently grab Natasha's bruised hands, taking a ripped piece of cloth to clean up her bleeding knuckles.
"Oni sobiralis' rasskazat' o nas instruktoram."
They were going to tell the instructors about us.
Natasha winces as you wrap up her hands, carefully making sure that it isn't too tight as you tend to her injury.
"My mogli by spravit'sya s etim, Nat."
We could have handled it, Nat.
You sigh and Natasha shakes her head, her free hand moving to rest on her knee.
"No oni by nas nakazali."
But they would have punished us.
You nod your head and bite your lip, looking up into those green eyes as you hold her hand gently in your own.
"YA mog by prinyat' eto za nas oboikh."
I could have taken it for the both of us.
Natahsa's eyebrows furrow as she hears your words, her bandaged hand coming up to cup your cheek as the other grabs your free hand.
"Net."
No.
She gently brings your hand up to kiss your knuckles lightly.
"Net, ya ne pozvolyu tebe sdelat' eto dlya menya."
No, I won't let you do that for me.
You slowly move your hand to cup her cheek, Natasha's hand moving to cover your own.
"YA by vzyal na sebya mir za tebya, Natal'ya."
I would take on the world for you, Natalia.
Your words are a whisper but to Natasha, it was like a shout from the rooftops. The redhead slowly moves and kisses your hand that was resting on her cheek, causing a blush to dust your cheeks as she softly smiles at you.
"I ya dlya vas."
And I for you.
------------
Gently guiding her hand to cup your cheek, the both of you smile, you leaning into the warm touch as Natasha relishes the moment.
---------
You awake with a jolt as you hear heavy doors close outside of the motel room, it now being in the dead of night. Slowly moving from Natasha's arms, you go take a look outside, hoping to see that there's nothing. Your hopes are shattered when through the window, you can see the faint outline of a Hydra vehicle and multiple armed men, your heartrate spiking as you see the ones in white coats. "Shit." You hiss out as you start to pull clothes on, all of the rustling causing Natasha to awake. "Y/n?" She asks groggily as she sees you frantically moving around the room, hastily putting a shirt on and trying to find your weapon.
"Y/n what's happening?" She restates herself and is fully awake when you finally make eye contact with her, seeing the worry behind your eyes as you move towards her. "Nat, they're here." You rush out as you hand her some clothes, frantically trying to get the redhead out of here before she could get involved. "Whose here? Hydra?" She questions and you nod your head, feeling the bridge of your nose start to sting as reality comes crashing down on you. "They're here for me- shit- you have to go." You say as you try and pull yourself together.
"What? No, Y/n, I'm not leaving you again." Natasha says it like it's the most obvious thing in the world, pulling on some clothes and shoes. "Natalia this isn't fucking debatable, okay? I won't ever forgive myself if they get their hands on you." You say as you glance out the window one more time, mumbling a curse word as you start to see the figures close in. "Why are you acting like I can't handle myself?" Nat asks and you shake your head, opening a window opposite to the parking lot.
"I know you can handle yourself Nat, I've seen you fight hoards of threats and make your way out alive..I just don't want to pull you into this fight with me." You say before crossing the room and standing in front of Nat. "You've been the only thing I've cared about my entire life, please understand why I want you safe." Your voice is softer as you speak to her, her green eyes still prominent in the moonlit room. "What about you?" Nat asks in a whisper, a worried expression set across her face as you give her a watery grin.
"You know I never die, Natalia." You say as she shakes her head. "I'm like a cat and my lives haven't run out just yet." You continue and a laugh breaks past Nat's lips, causing you to smile even as a tear runs down your cheeks. "There it is." You breathe out and she looks at you questioningly. "What is it?" She asks. "I just wanted to see your smile one last time." You reply as you kiss a tear from her cheek, Natasha then moving to gently kiss your lips. The kiss is soft and passionate, you both trying to communicate to each other a message you both aren't ready to say yet.
Sooner than you'd like, the two of you break away, both of you giving the other a watery smile as you sniffle. "I'll come back to you, Nat. I promise." You whisper and she nods her head, gently kissing your temple as your eyes flutter closed. "You better, or else I'll beat your ass." She says and you give a shaky chuckle, hearing the Hydra men starting to kick down apartment doors. "I'm planning on it."
Hydra doesn't take long to storm the motel room, quickly seizing you before you had a chance to react. You were happy to comply with them until you saw them grab Natasha's arm, you immediately tearing from the Hydra agent's grip to tackle his ass. You successfully break his arm but aren't so lucky when you feel a wave of electricity shoot through your body, every muscle tensing up as you fall to the floor. "Fuck." You curse through gritted teeth as you force yourself to get up, looking at Natasha with desperate eyes as she hasn't left yet.
"Go!"
As the words leave your lips, both of you could almost see each other back on that mountainside, the dead bodies of the other girls littered around you as you kill another one for Natasha to escape. It felt like you were a teenager again, seeing Natasha teeter between staying and leaving as she stood at the treeline. A grunt of pain leaves your lips as one of the men shoves you into a desk, the wood breaking underneath you as air rushes out of your lungs. You've only taken down a few men, stabbing one of them in the throat with their own knife. As they start to overwhelm you, you take one last look at Natasha, seeing as she's taking one last glance at you as her hands rest on the window frame. As you lock eyes with her, you say one simple phrase.
"It's okay."
-------
Natasha isn't paying attention at all in the meeting the next day, not getting the image of your worried look out of her mind. “Romanoff, did you hear me?” Tony asks and her eyes glance upwards, the other Avengers looking at her as they await her answer. “Sorry, what?” She asks and Tony sighs, pointing towards a highlighted point in the mountainside. "From the information we've gathered, Bruce surmises that the next Hydra base is here, the building located about thirty feet below the surface." He explains and Natasha nods her head, her attention immediately being drawn when the word Hydra slips past his lips. "I was asking your opinion on how we should enter the compound without getting caught." Tony finishes, waiting for Natasha to give her input as he sees the gears turning in her head.
"It's the compound that they use for their experiments, right?" She asks and Steve nods his head, Nat sighing as she looks at the dot on the map. "Well considering that it's underground they only need security for the entrances and exits, probably have a few patrolling the perimeter..I think our best entry point is here." She says, standing up and pressing a pen to the western side of the mountain. "Of course, we always have the risk of getting caught but it's lower than just walking through the front door." Natasha explains and all of the Avengers nod their head, she's not a trained soldier but she's a damn good spy if they've ever seen one.
------
"Nat, are you alright?" Steve asks after everyone clears out of the conference area, grabbing the assassin's arm before she leaves. "They've got her, Steve." She says and his eyebrows furrow. "Who?" He asks and Natasha sighs, looking up at the super-soldier. "Y/n. They took her last night." She explains and Steve sees the worry on his friend's face. "Do you think she's at the base we're going to?" He asks and Natasha shrugs her shoulders, "I don't know, but if she is there I'm gonna tear up the whole place until I find her." She says and Steve nods, seeing the determination in Nat's eyes. "We'll get her back Natasha." He says and Nat grins a bit, "I know."
-----
It's easy, almost too easy, getting into the Hydra base, Natasha only taking out five guards patrolling the area and guarding the entrance. "This doesn't feel right to me." Steve says as they head towards the entrance, the fresh snow crunching under their boots. "Nothing ever feels right to you, Cap." Hawkeye says as he flys overhead, making sure no Hydra agents get the jump on the pair. Natasha only quirks her head to the side when Steve makes eye contact with her, agreeing with both men as they reach the entrance. Natasha scans the entry card that they swiped off the guard and the door opens, immediately granting them access into the underground base.
-----
"Give her a sedative." One of the doctors commands as you continue to struggle, hitting anything you could reach as they try to strap you onto a stretcher. They've been touring and interrogating you the entire night, bargaining for information instead of brainwashing you.
"We saw that Avenger in the motel, tell us what you know and we won't wipe your memory." They say but you only clench your jaw and stay silent, ripping yourself from their grip each time they try and contain you.
"Don't you fucking touch me!" You grit out as you knock one of the men unconscious, kicking the stretcher away from you as you watch the doctor run to grab a sedative. Your body is covered in blood and bruises, still putting up a fight since you were taken a day ago. Getting shoved up against the wall you cry out in pain, your head getting aggressively slammed against the wall. You don't even realize the doctors came back with a sedative until you feel the prick of the needle in your neck, your vision going blurry as the fight leaves your body.
You don't put up a struggle as they drag you onto the stretcher, strapping your arms and legs down as everything moves in slow motion around you.
You know where they're taking you. You know you're about to get brainwashed.
As they push you down the hallway, you slowly close your eyes and try to burn the image of Natasha's face into your mind, feeling slightly calmer as you think of her wrapping you up in her arms and telling you that everything is going to be okay.
The next time you open your eyes, you're strapped down into the metal chair that they use for brainwashing, feeling like you're a shell of a person as you look down at your restraints. They force a piece of plastic into your mouth as you blankly stare at the doctors in white coats, only one thing on your mind as they prep the machine.
Natasha.
A tear rolls down your cheek quietly as the restraints latch onto you tighter, forcing you to lay back as your breathing starts to get heavier.
It never gets easier, the brainwashing, knowing that you'll only be a puppet to Hydra with no free will.
The metal paddles clamp around your head and your heart rate spikes, hearing the doctors beside you start to say the words you always dreaded to hear.
"Snow."
"Sixteen."
"Red."
With each word, you could feel the control leaving your body, bracing yourself for the pain that's going to come next.
"Ballet."
"Redback."
"Knife."
A scream rips from your throat as pain surges through your body, the machine being activated and making you pull against the restraints. Your vision fades in and out of focus as you continue to scream, every muscle in your body tensing as the brainwashing takes over.
You try your best to fight the pain, your mind trying desperately to hold onto the memory of Natasha as your trigger words reach your ears.
Natasha.
Natasha..
Natasha..?
Natalia?
Natalia..
No, it's Natasha.
Nat?
Natasha.
Natalia.
...
...
who?
Your eyes are blank as the machine finally releases you from its grip, a scientist having a pleased look on his face as he walks up to you. "Just to make sure this doesn't happen again." he says before commanding you to put your head forward, gripping your hair as he presses a cool metal gun to the back of your neck. With a click you could feel something being put into your neck, the new object feeling irritating under your skin. It's a small chip, maybe a quarter wide, and it's now attached to the nape of your neck, the needles embedding into your skin to make sure it stays in place.
"Are you ready to comply, Agent 809?" He asks and you nod your head, suddenly hearing alarms go off that there's been a security breach in the compound. "Say the word, sir, your wish is my command." You say and he grins, grabbing your chin. "Kill the Avengers." He says and you look at him in the eyes. "Main target?" You ask and he thinks for a moment, looking at the Hydra officers before looking back at you. ''The Black Widow."
------
Natasha hears your screams ring through the compound and she feels her blood run cold, Steve grabbing her arm before she could do anything stupid. "Natasha, don't." He says in a harsh whisper and she shakes her head, pulling herself from her grip as she continues to move down the hallway.
She quickly takes down the next few guards that she sees, not using her bullets yet so they don’t cause the rest of the base to be alerted of their presence. That plan doesn’t last long though when a guard gets the upper hand on her, causing her to shoot two bullets into his chest and making him drop. As soon as the shots are fired, alarms go off across the compound, causing Natasha to curse under her breath. “Language.” Steve says and Natasha rolls her eyes, picking up her gun and racing down the hallway to try and find you.
———-
Natasha kicks down a set of double doors and shoots the people inside, scanning the room for any sign of you. They've gone through 95% percent of the compound and haven't found you yet, Natasha getting more and more anxious as time goes on. "I heard her, I swear." She tells Steve each time they clear an area and come up empty.
It isn't until she sees you strapped to the chair that she lets out a breath of relief, you seemingly normal accept for the cuts and bruises. "Y/n, oh god you're okay." She breathes out as she reaches you, seeing the dazed look in your eyes as she undoes your restraints.
"I'm sorry." You whisper out in a last-ditch attempt to warn her before your chip clicks on. "Sorry? You're sorry for what?" Natasha asks but doesn't get a chance to reply before you knock her backwards, tearing out of the remaining restraints as you stand up.
The wind gets knocked out of Natasha and Steve gets into a fighting stance, you not even giving him a glance as you head towards Natasha. Steve quickly intervenes and throws his shield at you, your hand sticking out to grab it before tossing it to the floor. "That's all you've got, Capitan?" You sneer teasingly as you grab a knife from the table, getting a swing on him and clipping him in the cheek.
The super soldier quickly hits back though, kicking you in the stomach and making you stumble back. You quickly grab one of the cords that was attached to a computer and you wrap it around the Avenger's neck, maneuvering yourself so that you're behind him and pulling tight.
Stumbling backwards, he throws himself up against the wall, successfully breaking your grip as you get pinned between the wall and the Avenger. Steve quickly turns and pins you up against the wall by your neck, pulling his fist back to punch you. "Steve!" Natasha hisses out his name harshly and he turns to look at her, temporarily forgetting that you're brainwashed. He groans and tosses you to the floor, seeing the glowing chip on the back of your neck. You quickly get back up and go for Natasha, the redhead dodging your swing and making your fist go through the wall. "Y/n. Stop it." Natasha grits out as she grabs your arm and twists it behind your back, a hiss leaving your lips as you feel your muscles pop.
"Who. the fuck. is y/n?" You spit out as you maneuver yourself around and hit Natasha back, grabbing her throat and tossing her up against the wall. "They want me to kill you, so that's what I'm going to do." You say as you grab a beaker besides you, breaking it to create a shattered edge. You're about to swing the bottle when Steve comes up behind you and hits the back of your neck with his shield (and you swear later on that if he did it any harder your neck would have snapped). A cry of pain leaves your lips as the chip sparks and you stumble forward, your head bowing into Natasha's shoulder as pain surges through your body. Natasha freezes as she sees your shoulder slump, a small whimper of "Natasha." leaving your lips as the chip short circuits. "Y/n?" She asks and she sees your hand come up to grip at the back of your neck, your other hand dropping the shattered beaker. "Nat. The chip." You breathe out as you feel it starting to take hold again, pushing yourself away from her as your mind clouds over again.
"Steve, hit the chip again." Natasha commands and Steve nods his head, watching as your shoulders tense up again as you attack Natasha. She quickly blocks all of your hits and flips you over onto the floor, you quickly gripping onto her arm and pulling her down onto the floor with you.
The chip sparks again and for a second you regain control, scrambling up to the control panel and enabling the emergency demolition program. "What are you doing?" Steve asks and your jaw tenses, shutting all of the Hydra officers inside by locking all the exits except one. "I'm blowing this place up." You mumble, jaw tensing as the chip revs up once again. "I've locked all of them in, if you go to exit c9 that'll be the only one unlocked so you can escape." You say as you lock all of the doors inside of the compound, keeping all of them in place so they can't run.
"What about you?" Natasha asks as she gets up from the floor, looking at the chip flicker on and off. "The chip will take over sooner or later, I'd rather die in this explosion than let them use my body again." You say as you grip the side of the table, everything in your body being split in two with each side fighting to take control. "No you're not, we're getting you out of here." Steve says and it genuinely surprises the both of you, the man in stars grabbing your arm as you slam the button down to activate the explosion.
T-minus: two minutes
"I don't deserve to get out of here." You shake your head as you look at Natasha's neck, now bruised with your handprint as you wince. "I've hurt you, I've hurt her, I've hurt so many people. All of it is on my hands." You say and Natasha shakes her head, grabbing your hand and kissing the back of it gently. "I've left you once, Y/n, I'm not letting you go again." She says and you think for a moment, alarms blaring around you as you see the pleading look on her face. "Alright." You whisper, allowing Natasha to pull you out of the room as Steve follows close behind you.
You run down the hallway as you guide the two other Avengers towards the exit, quickly taking out any Hydra agents that gets in your way.
"There! There it is." You call out as you see exit c9, all three of you running towards it as the speakers count down.
T-minus: thirty seconds
The chip fully kicks back into gear as your eyes widen, your strides slowing down as it feels like someone wraps restraints around your body. "No, no no no. Please not now." You beg to yourself as both Steve and Nat notice, your eyes turning dead as your legs start to carry you away from the exit. "Oh no you don't." Natasha grits out as she tackles you, dragging you towards the exit as you fight against her.
Twenty five..
"Let go of me!" You hiss as you tear from her grip and Steve lingers near the exit, watching the interaction happen as a metal curtain starts to descend over the only open exit. "I'm taking you home, Y/n." Natasha says as she grabs onto your body, Steve moving to keep the door open as he calls the two of you to move.
Nineteen..
"Steve! Go!" Natasha yells out as she drags you towards the exit, blocking each hit you try and swing at her. Steve shakes his head and calls out over the alarms, "I'm not leaving you two!"
Natasha looks at him and shakes her head, being only ten feet from the exit. "Just go! I'm right behind you." She says and Steve reluctantly steps through the exit, the now dented metal sheet continuing to close on the two of you.
fifteen..
fourteen..
"Y/n please, stop fighting me." Natasha begs as you tear out of her grip again, heart-pounding as the alarms fill her head. "Why should I listen to you? You left me. You were everything to me and then you just left me!" You ask harshly as you see the tears in her eyes, Natasha seeing the real you starting to break through. "I didn't want to leave you, Y/n! I'm sorry!" Natasha's voice raises a bit in volume. "I wanted you to come but you were stubborn and stayed behind for me! You stayed behind and when I went back to you..you were already gone." She says and the gears turn in your head. "Then why are you here? Why are you going through so much trouble for me when you have a perfectly good life out there?" You ask, your body still tense as Natasha looks at you with an open mouth. "Because.."
Five..
Four..
"Because.."
Three..
Two..
"Fuck." Natasha doesn't finish her thought as she grabs you and holds you close to her chest, turning you so that your body isn't the closest one to the blast.
One.
The explosion shakes the ground as the two of you get tossed through the air, your body hitting the metal door with a thud. The ground shakes above you as the base comes apart, Steve pulling the metal curtain open and dragging the two of you out into the snow.
Natasha is coughing fiercely as the smoke and dust enters her lungs, gripping onto you for dear life as she feels Steve dragging the two of you out. Your blood stains the snow as Natasha sits up, heart dropping to her stomach as she sees your head loll back limply.
"Shit, Y/n!" She says as she taps on your cheek, blood running down her temple as she checks for signs of life. Your heartbeat is slow and your breathing is labored but you're alive, that final hit allowing the chip to fully break in half on the back of your neck. "It's because I love you, you idiot." Natasha whispers as she gently kisses your temple, Steves's jaw setting as he sees the little interaction.
------
The next time you wake up, you're in a sterile white room, your heart rate spiking as you think you're back in the Hydra lab again. Trying to push yourself up, your hands get stopped by restrains, the same straps tying down your legs. Swallowing thickly, you look around the room, the atmosphere making you feel vulnerable as you try and undo the restraints. A door opens to the right of you and panic seeps into your bones, thinking that it's a doctor coming in to run experiments on you again.
"Hey, it's okay." Natasha's soft voice reaches your ears as she comes over and undoes the restraints, gently freeing your legs and wrists before looking up at you. "I'm sorry, Bruce put them on for precaution." She says with a soft smile, taking a knee beside your bed so she's at eye level with you. You don't say anything as you move to hug her, your head immediately finding residence in the crook of your neck as you take a shaky breath. Your body aches and you're pretty sure you look like shit but you're so fucking happy that Natasha's here.
"Nat." You whisper softly as Natasha's arms quickly wrap around you, being careful to not hurt you as she closes her eyes. "I'm here, moy golub', I'm here." She whispers and you almost break down at that nickname, your arms tightening around her. "You're safe Y/n, you're free." She whispers and your mind can't even process her words, your only thoughts being how nice it feels to be wrapped up in Tasha's arms again.
When you pull away, there are tears in your eyes, Natasha gently wiping them away and kissing your cheeks.
"YA lyublyu tebya."
I love you.
The words slip from your lips before you could even process it, your eyes widening as you see the unreadable look on Natasha's face. "N-Nat, I'm so sorry, I didn't-" Natasha cuts you off with a kiss, gently pressing her lips to hers as she grins.
"ya tozhe tebya lyublyu."
I love you too.
---
"Should we do something about that?" Tony asks as the team looks through the one-way mirror they placed in your room, seeing Natasha climb into your bed and pull you into her chest. Your eyes close as you contently settle yourself into her, Natasha's hand rubbing circles along your back.
"Give them a break Tony, it's not like she's going or hurt anyone." Steve says as Bruce holds up the chip implant, "Yep, no more brainwashing for her." He says as the rest of them look at the two of you, never seeing Natasha this content until now.

Dark Queen, Bright King - Tom Hiddleston x Emo/Alt Reader
You and Tom were different. At your core you shared many interests and values as well as your playful natures and senses of humor, but if someone were to see you walking down the street together, they might have a few questions.
“What are you going to wear on the show?” you asked your now husband. You and Tom had been married for nearly a month after dating for about two years and he had finally convinced you to let him introduce you to the world.
“I don’t know, actually.” Tom sat down on the couch next to you and pulled you into his side. “I can’t decide between wearing the most colorfully obnoxious outfit I could get away with or pulling a Ragnarok and wearing head to toe black.”
You laughed, dragging your finger up and down Tom’s thigh. “I can’t lie, the black-on-black suit does make me feel a way…”
“Of course, you pick the black suit.” Tom teased, pulling you into a heated kiss as your fingers trailed dangerously close to his manhood.
You turned to straddle Tom’s lap, slowly unbuttoning his shirt. His hands couldn’t stay still, moving from your legs to your ass to your waist. “I didn’t pick the black suit.” You said, leaning forward to press kisses across his jaw and down his neck. “I think you should wear one of your stunning bright suits.”
“But you said…” Tom tried to reply, already having a hard time staying on topic.
“I said it makes me feel a way.” You pushed Tom’s shirt down his arms and ran your hands slowly up his torso. “What you’re forgetting…” you pulled your shirt over your head to reveal a black lace bra, “is that you’re always making me fall further and more in love with you just by being you.”
Tom pulled you tighter to him, pressing sloppy kisses to your breasts. “God, I love you.”
The two of you could never keep your hands off of each other. This was the second time TODAY you’d made love. Slowly. Lazily. Just happy to be in each other’s embrace.
As you laid against his chest, still on the couch, and let your breathing slow back to normal you looked up at your husband. “I fell in love with you exactly as you are.” You traced invisible patterns softly into Tom’s chest with your fingertip. “I love how bold and bright and charismatic you are. I love that you like classical music and how excited you get when people ask you questions about Shakespeare and that you’re always the most polite person in the room. I wouldn’t change a thing about you.”
You could feel a laugh rumble in Tom’s chest. He pulled your hand to his lips and gently kissed it. “I’m ever grateful for that.” Tom twirled a piece of your hair between his fingers as he spoke. “I wouldn’t change a thing about you, either. I can’t wait to tell the world how much I love you.”
“How are you going to break the news that the actor behind everyone’s favorite trickster has finally settled down?”
“You’ll have to wait and see.” Tom smirked.
The two of you had met on a Broadway show set. You were in charge of make-up and costume design, and you’d hit it off with Tom straight away.
At first, he found you intriguing. Your style spectrum went from absolute tomboy to fitted dresses, but the color black was the common denominator. You had various tattoos sprawled across your skin and there really was no way to know what color hair you’d show up with the following day. He loved how sure of yourself you were and how little you worried over what those around you may or may not be thinking.
Little did he know, you thought the same of him. First, he was the most attractive person in the room whether he was wearing a ten-thousand-dollar suit or a pair of black joggers and a t-shirt. He always commanded the room with his bright disposition and you’d never once seen him have a diva moment. He was intelligent…not only with information, but emotionally.
One day after a show, while you were gently removing his stage make-up, he kept smiling up at you.
“What’s got you so happy?” you asked.
“Well, we’ve got a week break. First real break we’ve had since the show started.” His answer made sense, but you noticed his cheeks were blushing.
“You get a whole week without having to deal with me smearing things all over your face” you teased, throwing the make-up remover wipes away.
Tom cleared his throat. “I was actually hoping we could make plans?” He reached out and grabbed one of your hands in both of his.
It took you a second to realize he was being serious. “Is Mr. polite and proper asking me on a date?”
Tom laughed, ducking his head. “That depends on whether or not Ms. dark and spooky is willing to give Mr. polite and proper a chance.”
The two of you ended up spending the entire week together. You talked about film scores and music. Horror movie classics and period pieces. Your favorite projects that you’ve worked on. Friends and family. Even though the two of you looked so different, you fit perfectly into each other’s lives. That brought you to this moment, with your husband about to tell the world about your existence.
The Graham Norton show is filmed on a Thursday and aired on a Friday. You were surprised that no one had leaked the news between filming and airing.
“Welcome to the show TOM HIDDLESTON!” The audience, as usual, went wild. Graham always loved teasing Tom and making him blush, so when Tom reached out to let Graham know he wanted to announce something important and that he wanted to do it on the show, Graham booked it immediately.
“Welcome back, Tom.”
“Thanks for having me” Tom answered, greeting everyone else on the couch with him including Eddie Redmayne and Kenneth Branagh.
They talked for a minute about Tom’s latest projects and such.
“So, Tom. I hear you’ve had a lot of big things happen this year?” Graham was genuinely curious what Tom was going to announce.
“That I have.” Tom replied, looking to be thinking about them. “I mean, one…I bought a house outside of London.”
“Wonderful, wonderful. What else?” Graham continued.
“Oh, I also experienced my first mosh pit” he said so casually.
“You did what, dear?” Kenneth interjected.
“Why wasn’t I invited to this?” Eddie asked, laughing at everyone’s reaction. Eddie obviously already knew what Tom was going to announce as him and Tom had been friends since they were teenagers. Eddie was at the wedding, even.
“Hold up! Hold up.” Graham said, waving his arms. “How on God’s green earth did you end up in a mosh pit?”
“Well, thankfully I didn’t end up IN it. For my first go, I just stood very very close to it.” Tom explained, making the room laugh.
Kenneth turned to Tom. “Why were you anywhere near it?”
“Well, my wife had been asking me to go to one of…” Tom started explaining.
Graham did a dramatic double take before reaching out and grabbing Tom’s arm, interrupting his story. “Did you say your wife?”
“Yes, my wife y/n. She loves this band Bring Me The Horizon, and her friend couldn’t make it to the show so she asked me if I would go with her.” Tom had the biggest smile on his face, finally being able to talk about you.
“Screw the mosh pit and the house near London, I want to hear about your wife!” Graham pushed.
“Well, I guess the biggest thing that happened this year was that I married the love of my life.” Tom blushed, looking back at the screen. He had given the production team a few photos to show.
On screen first was a photo from your wedding. You were in a beautiful, gothy, black, long-sleeve, plunge neckline, lace dress and Tom was in an amazing dark red suit with a black shirt.
“You two look incredible.” Graham complimented, watching the photo change.
“Thank you, she’s a million times cooler than I am.” Tom laughed. “But for some reason she agreed to spend the rest of her life with me.”
The second photo was a candid photo from the greenroom where you met. You were concentrating on getting Tom’s stage make-up perfect and he was just staring at you, adoration clear on his face.
“As you can see, I was smitten.” Tom pointed out.
“Is that how you met?” Graham asked. Tom told the story and explained how long the two of you had been dating, then engaged, and then married.
“I’m surprised you were able to keep it private for so long” Graham commented.
As the final photo came up, Tom started explaining. “This is a photo of Y/n at one of my family gatherings.” It was a photo of you on the living room floor with his nieces and nephews. You were laying on your stomach and painting all of the kid’s nails. “We had only been together for a little over a month I believe. We had just concluded the show where we met, and I asked her to come to London with me. She was so nervous.”
“Well, it looks like she had no reason to worry.” Graham said.
“Not at all. The kids never left her side.” Tom replied, smiling as he looked at the photo. “Everyone loved her. Everyone that meets her loves her, to be honest.”
“Well, when she’s ready you’ll have to bring her on the show.” Graham suggested.
“I think having you two in a room together would be dangerous.” Tom laughed.
“Whatever could you mean?” Graham tried to act innocent, and Tom just raised his eyebrows and gave him a *you know what you did* look. “Fine, no fanfiction involved. Honest to God.”
Everyone laughed and the show moved onto Kenneth after Tom received many congratulations.

Going Through My Movies Part 5: Burning (2018)
What. The. Fuck. Did I just watch?
Anyways I also watched High Diving Hare. Rather than showing off one joke and just building and expanding on it like our last short, this is more so concerned about how many different ways you can do one gag, in this case Bugs tricking Yosemite Sam to jump off the high dive into the bucket of water. And credit to them they do that gag in everyway possible. I will say it loses a little bit of the magic when the punchline is never unexpected, but this was still very fun.
You could say this movie is a slow burn
ba dum tish
In a way Burning is a movie about nothing. It's hard to argue that any of the characters go through big dramatic changes through an arc, the most you could argue is that things they repress are brought to the surface.
Even though again not much really happens in this 2 and a half hour movie, let me try and give you the premise anyways. Lee Jong-su is a loser. He has no friends, no girlfriend, he hasn't seen his mother and sister in many years, and his father is on trial for assault. He has no direction in his life. He wants to be a writer but he fails to think of any ideas for his book (Despite people around him suggesting that he base a book on other people in his life). He reunites with a girl he knew when he was younger Shin Hae-mi, and they start a kind of relationship before she goes on vacation to Africa. When she returns she has become friends with a man named Ben, a mysterious stranger whom both Jong-su and the audience get bad vibes from. While Jong-su becomes jealous of Ben and Hae-mi's relationship, we get a deeper insight into all 3 of their psyches, although Ben likes to keep his secrets, he eventually reveals to Jong-su that he likes to burn down greenhouses for fun, and he plans to do it again soon nearby. Soon after Hae-mi disappears and Jong-su becomes more obsessed with Ben.
Okay, I think I explained it well enough. That wasn't just for your sake mind you, I wanted to get it all straight in my head too. The world of Burning is very slow and very unremarkable. Jong-su desperately wants anything to shake up his life. He thinks Hae-mi is that thing. Some people have accused her of being a manic pixie dream girl which is incredibly dumb and comes from a fundamental misunderstanding of the movie. Hae-mi is only a manic pixie dream girl in Jong-su's mind. In reality, she's a completely normal average person with flaws like the rest of us. Burning is a reflection on the type of masculinity that makes men create manic pixie dream girls (God I hate that term) in their minds.
Steven Yeun as Ben is fantastic in this movie. I loved him in Invincible and he's quite good in one of my favourite films of all time, Sorry to Bother You. In both of those, he's a nice well-meaning, if flawed guy, but here he goes full American Psycho. He's a guy where if you just met him once or twice you probably wouldn't think anything is off, hell you'd probably like him, but IF he lets you pull back the layers you come to realize how screwed up he really is. Not in a Jeffrey Dahmer way, much more subtly than that. Steven Yeun carries it all, it would not work at all without his performance.
Burning is a psychological drama where the audience themselves are the ones who have to work to delve into the character's psyche. I have no doubt that behind the scenes there are dozens of reference pages thoroughly explaining each character, but the movie will never directly show you any of it. It's not so much about the characters, but rather the idea of the characters that we have in our minds and that's really interesting.
On top of all of that, this movie is also shot absolutely gorgeously. Excellent use of colour; it knows exactly when to heighten things with the cinematography and when to keep them grounded. The soundtrack ain't too bad either.
Burning is a movie that thrives in it's ambiguity. The mystery of everyday life, even if that mystery is manufactured. In a way it's about the quiet tragedy of day to day life, how humans won't ever be satisfied. It's not quite like anything I've seen before, it makes me want to go check out Lee Chang-dong's other films, I know Secret Sunshine has a Criterion so I'll have to pick it up in the next sale.
Really enjoyed this one. I gave it an 8/10, closer to a 9 than a 7. I know after all that glowing praise you might expect a 10/10, but I think in some ways the elements here I do like could be expanded upon to fill up the negative space of the story. I get why there's some repetition in this movie but I think they could present it in a better way.
Next up in my collection is The Cranes Are Flying by Mikhail Kalatozov. A movie I know very little about but have heard it is really great.
See ya when I see ya.

CQL Rewatch - Ep 20
Iconic. Seeing Wei Wuxian back and better than ever is so satisfying! That flute playing that probably we’ve all forgotten about since the first two episodes becomes a repeating leitmotif throughout the series. It’s just as iconic as Wei Wuxian himself. And what I love about this shot here is how the light hits his eyes, and from this specific camera angle, it looks like a mask on his face! I just thought that was super cool. Whether it was intentional or not, I have no idea, but I like to think it was. I guess it’s like a reverse mask in this case—everything is hidden except his eyes.
It’s amazing how I only went without Wei Wuxian for like half an episode, yet it felt like so much longer. The emotional weight that he carries is so great that from all the characters searching for him, it feels like it’s actually been three months, instead of more like twenty-five minutes. And I think that’s something that we can feel in CQL but we can’t really feel in the book. Since the book is written in third person limited, we only see Wei Wuxian’s side of the story (I think that’s accurate, but it’s been a few months since I read it). That being the case, we never leave Wei Wuxian’s side, we never get to miss him being there. Of course the story is framed totally differently in the book and not in chronological order, even—lots of flip-flopping, which is fun but also a little confusing when you’re trying to keep track of a timeline.
I think part of what makes Wang Lingjao so creepy here is that her garish makeup is totally gone: her face is pale and ghoulish, with just the bright red blood trickling out of her nose, mouth, and cut on her cheek. I think they could have made her even more ghostly, but I like what they did for her apparition. It’s fun to see how fast Wen Chao cracks, though. He’s very much all bark and no bite—honestly, such a coward. On the one hand, it’s satisfying to watch him lose it, but on the other, it’s quite disturbing. I toe the line between enjoying it and being disgusted by it, but I love that CQL at least kept in this part of Wei Wuxian’s character. It’s like revenge, no matter how bloody, is okay in Chinese tv, but not the main character being kind of bad. I don’t get why they had to nerf his character to the point of absolving him of all guilt with everything that happened. I like a character who makes bad choices, but feels guilty for it, because that shows depth. Someone who bad things happen to because of the “real villain” aren’t as interesting to me. I think also that Xiao Zhan would have been amazing as the real Wei Wuxian from the book, had they adapted him that way. I also would have really, really loved to see the scene that is only really described to us (I think by Lan Xichen) where a distraught and delusional Wei Wuxian rejects Lan Wangji. Ugh, that would have been so heart-wrenching! Maybe in the donghua…sigh….
So this is important, I think. There was a point in the last episode where Jin Zixuan tells his cousin not to let the crows peck at the dead bodies of their enemies. In other words, don’t desecrate the bodies, even if they are the enemy. Of course, Jin Zixuan didn’t hold any personal grudges towards any of them, at least that we know of. Jiang Cheng certainly does. So even though Wang Lingjao is already dead by her own hand, he whips her with Zidian. Jiang Cheng is becoming more and more twisted by his anger and grief, which he never deals with in a healthy way. He wants revenge against those that have wronged him and his parents, and he really never stops seeking revenge throughout the story. First it’s against the Wens, and then it’s against Wei Wuxian. It’s a fairly slow descent, I think, over years, but I quite like watching him twist like this. While it’s fun and interesting watching someone repent and have a redemption arc, it’s also interesting watching them go the other way.
Lan Wangji seems to know, or at least suspect, that the person who has killed everyone in the Supervisory Office, including Wang Lingjao, is Wei Wuxian. A talent for using talismans (one of which Lan Wangji used himself to escape the Wens), someone who is seeking revenge against the Wen Clan—these things point to Wei Wuxian in his mind. He doesn’t want to say this to Jiang Cheng, he doesn’t even want to admit it himself, but he’s putting the pieces together. I think this is a frightening thought for him. On the one hand, he would be happy to find Wei Wuxian alive, but on the other, what state would they find him in? And what does it mean that he’s killed all these people singlehandedly? This isn’t the Wei Wuxian that Lan Wangji knows and cares so deeply about. This isn’t the man that Lan Wangji was ready to die for. I think his heart is very much filled with dread in this scene.
Jiang Cheng’s line is interesting too—basically, the enemy of my enemy is my friend. Solid, really, but it does come with some problems in reality. The enemy of your enemy just might stab you in the back later. It’s a very simplistic view, but I think at this point, Jiang Cheng is just happy to see the Wens dead. There are a few he wants to kill himself, but he seems satisfied if they just die out, regardless of who does it.
I like seeing Lan Wangji and Jiang Cheng team up for these few episodes, because it’s fun seeing how they each approach the situations. Jiang Cheng relies heavily on his heart and emotions, which I can totally identify with. He wants to find Wei Wuxian and he wants revenge on Wen Zhuliu and Wen Chao—those are his two priorities. And then Lan Wangji is definitely more of a logical person—he wants to get to the bottom of these deaths and find out who is the person with so much wicked energy that is doing all of it—and also, that person is probably Wei Wuxian, who he is very interested in finding. Here Jiang Cheng wants to rush after Wen Zhuiliu, just as he did when he went back to Lotus Pier. He’s very rash, while Lan Wangji is much more calm and collected. I mean, if it were me, I’d want to see if they would give up any information before I killed them.
And the reveal is…Wen Chao is fucking disgusting! I didn’t even want to screencap one of the close-ups, because I felt like I’d have to do a trigger warning for blood lol. Not really, though, because I never do, sorry. I love the looks on Jiang Cheng’s and Lan Wangji’s faces, though. Jiang Cheng is so horrified and Lan Wangji is just mildly shocked. I think the real thing is like, who are we dealing with here? Who is this monster who’s been murdering everyone in all these different ways? Who has made Wen Chao look like this? Is this friend or foe? Like I said, Jiang Cheng keeps saying that as long as the person is killing the Wens, he’s fine with it, but I think even he is bothered by this level of mutilation, even against someone he loathes.
It’s hilarious to me that Wen Zhuliu uses this tactic with Wen Chao. Oh, you’re going to insult me? I’m useless? Okay, bye! LOL. Also very amusing that this is really the last conversation they have with each other: this bickering that they’ve probably done over and over off screen. Wen Zhuliu stays by Wen Chao’s side, though, because he’s indebted to Wen Ruohan, of course. It would have been a neat twist to see Wen Zhuliu defect. And you still could have had a dramatic scene where Jiang Cheng chases him down.
I love it! I love it I love it I love it! The flute! This part is so well done (it’s still a little campy, of course, but that’s part of the charm)! I mean, as the audience, we all know who it is by now, but I love that they keep up the mystery because Lan Wangji and Jiang Cheng still don’t know. They didn’t see him walk in. I just love this.
And shock. Jiang Cheng looks significantly more surprised. It had never crossed his mind that the person doing all this was actually Wei Wuxian, the very individual that he’s been searching for. Lan Wangji, on the other hand, doesn’t really look surprised. He looks a little surprised, okay—I’ll give you that. But I think most of what he’s feeling right now is the deep dread of being right. He wanted to be wrong, even when everything pointed to Wei Wuxian. I don’t think he wanted to believe that Wei Wuxian was capable of this, no matter how much he wanted to get revenge for what happened at Lotus Pier. I think there’s disappointment there too—how could he do such a thing? And I’ve giffed this scene with this quote: “He started to estrange her…And they became strangers who knew each other’s heart, so broken as they drifted apart” (Ana Claudia Antunes, Pierrot & Columbine). I think the realization here and a bit later for Lan Wangji that Wei Wuxian has become some other person is quite heartbreaking. He’s like a stranger to him, and that feeling of betrayal when you thought you knew a person inside and out—that hurts. It’s a deep-seated betrayal that Lan Wangji feels throughout this scene.
Oh, what I also like about this part is that when Wei Wuxian appears, neither one of them can look away. They are solely focused on him at this point.
He finally gets his revenge on Wen Zhuliu. And it’s great. They jump through the roof and he strings him up with Zidian. I can’t really say anything about it—Jiang Cheng needed to do this or he never would have been able to move on from Lotus Pier and his parents’ death.
WWX: Have I changed?
JC: No, not exactly.
I love that these lines are exchanged while the camera is on Lan Wangji. Lan Wangji already sees how Wei Wuxian has changed: the flute, the wicked energy, the almost senseless killing—none of these things are like the Wei Wuxian he’s come to love. And yes, I think love—and it hurts more because there is love. Lan Wangji wanted to walk the straight path with Wei Wuxian together, and he feels betrayed by what Wei Wuxian has done. Despite that, he still wants to help him. He implores Wei Wuxian to come back to Gusu with him so that they can help him and bring him back to the right path.
This whole scene feels like Lan Wangji isn’t even in the room, it’s like a private conversation between Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji just happens to overhear. He says nothing. He lets Jiang Cheng ask a hundred questions while Wei Wuxian calmly answers them. Wei Wuxian smiles and laughs, he seems himself, and yet he isn’t. There’s something wrong and Lan Wangji grows more and more perturbed by it as the seconds pass by.
The tension in this scene is palpable. It’s painful, it’s sad, it’s really hard for me to watch. And yet, this is one of my favorite scenes. Lan Wangji is feeling a lot, and he’s held it all in until this moment here. He calls him Wei Ying, and then Wei Wuxian in turn addresses him first as Second Master Lan, and then as Hanguang-Jun, both very formal names. It’s not Lan Zhan anymore—there is no familiarity on Wei Wuxian’s part. I think part of that is his attempt to protect Lan Wangji from any association with him that might actually harm Lan Wangji and his reputation. He’s setting a boundary—a wall—between them. And then when Lan Wangji bites back, Wei Wuxian changes tack: he stars being informal with him again, he brings up how they were good friends, classmates, etc. But that’s not going to work because Lan Wangji is feeling pretty upset right now.
Lan Wangji is desperate, scared, and worried for Wei Wuxian. Sometimes when we’re feeling all that, it can come across as anger, and that becomes worse when someone is dismissive of those feelings. Wei Wuxian is definitely dismissive here. In their interactions, Lan Wangji rarely shows this much emotion, and instead of paying attention to that, Wei Wuxian brushes it off. Jiang Cheng shows that he cares by hugging Wei Wuxian, but Lan Wangji is different—he’s thinking ahead, he’s seeing what Wei Wuxian has started to mess with—demonic cultivation—which can destroy a person’s mind, and he’s terrified. His only thought is to take Wei Wuxian away and try to change him for the better. Of course, just like what his father did to his mother, this cannot work. Even if Lan Wangji manages to force Wei Wuxian to come with him, he won’t be able to control him. All Lan Wangji can really do is try to persuade him.
The intensity of Lan Wangji’s gaze here is something else. This is a man who is desperate to save the person he loves. He is really looking out for Wei Wuxian’s best interests here and is getting no support from Jiang Cheng. I don’t really know what’s going on in Jiang Cheng’s head right now, but he’s definitely finding Lan Wangji’s behavior offensive. He doesn’t understand that Wei Wuxian’s actions will lead to his ultimate destruction, while it is very clear to Lan Wangji. But all I can do here is bring up how they viewed the person who was killing all the Wens earlier, before they even knew who it was. Lan Wangji felt very unnerved by it: he was disturbed by the talismans and disturbed by the various manners of death, while Jiang Cheng’s stance always was that it didn’t matter because the person was clearly on the same side—a dead Wen is a dead Wen no matter who is behind it. And his opinion doesn’t change even after he finds out. It’s not important to him how Wei Wuxian was able to kill all those people. He asks the questions, but he isn’t interested in really hearing the answer. On the contrary, I think Lan Wangji is very interested in those answers, but he wants to hear about it in a controlled environment. He doesn’t want Wei Wuxian to go back to Yunmeng, where he will essentially live with free-rein without boundaries.
As for cinematography, I love how Wei Wuxian holds up his flute here, setting up a literal boundary between him and Lan Wangji. Not only do you have Jiang Cheng creating that wall with his sword, you also have Wei Wuxian. What I mean is, it’s not only Jiang Cheng who wants to keep Lan Wangji out. Wei Wuxian is drawing a line here too: he wants Lan Wangji to stay out of his business. And this morphs into, what happens at this place is not Gusu Lans’ business—it only concerns Yunmeng Jiang Sect.
We all know Wei Wuxian is an arrogant person, but his arrogance and ignorance here is truly stunning. Lan Wangji tells him point-blank that he won’t be able to control this energy if he uses demonic cultivation, and Wei Wuxian does everything but laugh at him. I enjoy this and I hate it at the same time, because Lan Wangji is just fucking worried, you know? And maybe he doesn’t express himself well, but he’s shocked to see Wei Wuxian here, shocked that he’s responsible for all this—he can’t stay calm and collected under these conditions.
In just a few minutes, Wei Wuxian says that he and Lan Wangji are good friends and that Lan Wangji should treat him better, as well as “Who do you think you are? What I do is none of your business.” I’m paraphrasing, but that’s the gist. This scene here, with their faces so close to each other, kills me. This is absolute betrayal for Lan Wangji. It’s as if everything they had built together—all the respect, the affection, the comradery—is gone. The Wei Wuxian that he knew is gone.
I love the way this shot is framed, with Wei Wuxian staring after Lan Wangji, and then Wen Chao pleading, “Forgive me, forgive me.” So apt, because I think Wei Wuxian does feel bad here, I think he feels guilty. I think part of him really missed Lan Wangji and wanted to see him. I think he even knows that what Lan Wangji is doing is out of concern for him over anything else. But I also think Wei Wuxian’s pride gets in the way of that, and his desire for revenge, and even his desire for things to go back to normal. More than anything, Wei Wuxian wants to return to Yunmeng, to his shijie, to be able to live normally again, whatever that really means, because of course everything has changed. Nothing will ever be as it was again. More importantly, he has changed, and can never go back to the person he was before, the person who played so hard, the person who shirked his responsibilities and fooled around in classes, the person who shamelessly teased and flirted with Lan Wangji. That Wei Wuxian is gone. I think Wei Wuxian knows he’s hurt Lan Wangji and does feel bad about it, but he knows he has to push him away to protect him. He doesn’t want to drag Lan Wangji down with him, he feels it’s better this way. And I think, even though CQL!Wei Wuxian does have feelings for Lan Wangji quite a bit earlier than in the book, you can see the one-sided love here, in Lan Wangji’s aggressive behavior as he attempts to save this person he loves. Lan Wangji isn’t willing to give up on him, whereas Wei Wuxian is more prepared to let him go—to push him away to protect him. That’s love too, I suppose, but it’s a love that is meant to be from afar—a sad love, not a passionate one, not a desperate one, not the one that Lan Wangji feels for him.
This is so heartbreaking for Lan Wangji, in part, because they had such a special relationship before. Prior to this, Wei Wuxian prided himself in that he and Lan Wangji went on night hunts together—the clan didn’t matter, whether that was unorthodox or not. And now to see him use his clan as a barrier between them…it’s quite a betrayal. Lan Wangji feels so hurt, so at a loss—he wonders what could he have done differently to prevent this, he blames himself.
This is one of my favorite episodes because of this reunion scene. What you expect is some great reunion, the hugging between Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian, maybe a smile from Lan Wangji because he’s really happy to see him. But instead, you get pain. You get a Jiang Cheng hugging Wei Wuxian, but Wei Wuxian not even returning the hug (he only raises his arm to signal that he wants to break apart). You get a heated confrontation between Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian, one that is “fondly” thought of as their break-up scene. I love the drama, I love the pain, I love the angst, I love the dichotomy between Yunmeng Jiang and Gusu Lan, I love that this is the start of more tension between Jiang Cheng and Lan Wangji, I love everything about it. The “us and them” dynamic that starts here is so great, and then to see it slowly unravel throughout the next ten episodes, to see Wei Wuxian’s and Jiang Cheng’s relationship fall apart, while Wei Wuxian’s and Lan Wangji’s relationship begins to strengthen again--I eat it up. It’s like my candy. Anyway, I’m excited for what’s to come, excited to talk more wangxian and how it compares to the book (from my dwindling knowledge, that is)! Happy that you all are coming along this ride with me!

Have you ever gone into the full list of reasons why the show failed as bad as it did?
I’m not sure, but I can give it a shot.
Short answer: The show doesn’t have enough budget for a live-action sci fi epic that requires exotic animals and several wildly inhuman aliens. Its attempts to get around the budget constraints are often not ideal.
Long answer:
Far and away the biggest problem is the limited budget, but there’s a second almost-as-large problem with the showrunners not knowing how to work within a limited budget to create an action-adventure show.
As an example, AniTV episode “The Forgotten” (S1E13) adapts the Rachel-gets-amnesia plot line from Megamorphs 1. It has approximately similar beats – Rachel hits her head in bird morph, demorphs partway while still concussed, wanders around the woods for a while with no idea who or what she is, encounters an ex-host who mistakes her for a controller, and eventually gets found by her friends — but on a severely limited budget that precludes grizzly bears or sentient tornadoes.
However, the way that the show conveys the tension of Rachel being lost in the woods is to have her... run and then trip over a tree root. And then to play the footage of her falling on her butt in slow motion with dramatic percussion music. And then she gets up, runs some more, and trips over a different tree root. This doesn’t appear to be a way of conveying that she’s going in circles (although she is, judging by the way they keep filming the same stretch of woods from different angles) or that she’s dizzy from the concussion. It appears to be a way to try and get tension and excitement out of a character being lost in the woods.
Eventually Rachel stumbles on Fran (the ex-host who lives in the woods) and has a whole debate with Fran about whether either one of them is a controller. The scene has a decent degree of tension, as all they have to do to amp up the creepiness factor is have Fran wave around a yeerk in a jar and rant about a conspiracy that sounds crazy to Rachel but scary to the audiencey. This scene works. Draw this scene out.
Only pretty soon Rachel breaks out of Fran’s house and is back to... running through the woods and tripping over roots. Again.
After several other close encounters with inconveniently-placed tree parts, Rachel then stumbles onto a camp of helpful volunteers — yay, she’s saved! The dramatic irony immediately kicks back in when the audience realizes that the volunteers are from The Sharing., But Rachel herself has no idea that she shouldn’t let that nice man put that thermometer in her ear. Again, the scene works and it’s relatively low-budget — it requires six or seven extras, a handful of inexpensive props, and dramatic percussion music to let us know something bad is happening.
But wait, Jake and Marco are here! Crouching behind a tree, in clear view of every single one of the controllers, because we can see them in the same camera angle. Nonetheless, Jake and Marco save the day by... turning into dogs and barking, which causes all the controllers to leave, which means they can go get Rachel because the controllers just left her there.
So there are two interlinked problems, as I said: the limited budget, and the show runners’ inability to work within a limited budget.
The limited budget is part of the reason that Rachel has to spend so much time alone. They can’t afford to have a lot of extras or props, so they can’t afford to do a scene with her running onto the highway or one with her breaking into an abandoned house. Much less have her turn into an elephant and get hit by a truck. However, there are more interesting ways to get across that she’s lost and confused that don’t rely on — dun dun dun duuunn — tree roots! Have her repeatedly attempt to morph partway, only to get grossed out and stop. Have her attempt to converse with a real bird because she was herself a bird when she woke up. Let her figure out she’s walking in circles. There are possibilities.
Same principle applies to Rachel’s actual crash. She doesn’t get mobbed by jays in an eagle morph, because no way that’d fit into the budget; she just turns into a hawk identical to the one that plays Tobias and then... flies straight into a tree. The budget’s the reason there can’t be jays, but surely there was a better way to have her hurt than for her to just smash into a tree for no reason. (Maybe all those roots from the rest of the episode are the trees’ revenge?) Have her lose control of the morph because it’s new. Have her be in a rush because she needs to get to gymnastics camp. Have her get knocked off-course by sudden wind. Find a way to explain the scene better using voiceover, even if the footage itself is necessarily limited.
Fran is cool. Keep her on screen for longer, even if you can’t afford to burn her house down.
Same goes for the Sharing controllers. “Aliens mimic humans” is the oldest sci fi movie trick in the book, for a reason. All you have to do to convey that the human-controllers are scary enemies is to pay your actors to act like aliens. What do aliens act like? Whatever the hell you want, as long as it gets the point across. Heck, if you need to save money on extras, have Tom be the one who finds Rachel. It works in-universe: “I’m your cousin, so you can trust me!” It’d use a guest star who’s already trained in the part. It’d amp up the dramatic irony because the audience already knows he’s not trustworthy. Heck, let Christopher Ralph play a controller in a giant red wig and glasses while you’re at it — goodness knows he’s wasted on providing voiceover for hawk footage the whole time. But either way, let that scene play out for longer.
And for love of Toomin let Jake and Marco be better at hiding. Half the episodes of the show have scenes with these two crouched partway behind waist-high and/or foot-thick barriers with large parts of their body clearly visible, watching controllers who stand less than five feet away and somehow don’t notice them. I understand that you can’t have them morph most of the time, but work with what you’ve got a little better than that. It cannot cost all that much money to have a sequence where a controller looks over suddenly, only to have the camera angle show us that nothing of Jake’s and Marco’s position is visible from the controllers’ perspective. Instead we get footage of the controllers talking where Jake and Marco (always those two for some reason) are clearly visible onscreen, less than 10 feet away. Heck, you could also toss some plastic spiders on the ground and add a voiceover of Jake and Marco thought-speaking.
Anyway, that episode is a microcosm of the whole show.
Problem: the show can only afford to use domestic animals (cat, dog, lizard, rat) in most episodes. Workaround: have The Gardens simply not exist in this universe and necessitate the kids needing to work with limited DNA they can find at home. What actually happens: the show does a big reveal for Jake’s tiger and Rachel’s lion and Marco’s wolf... only to have those go unused in 95% of future battles, making the kids look careless and terrible at tactical planning.
Problem: the hawk can’t act. Workaround: have Tobias get his morphing power back a lot sooner in the show. What actually happens: Tobias just isn’t there most of the time in Season 1.
Problem: there’s no budget for battle sequences. Workaround: focus on the atmospheric horror instead. What actually happens: stock footage of a tiger gets intermixed with Richard Sali (who plays Chapman) doing his best to react to a nonexistant tiger, and all conflicts resolve themselves with the controllers running away the moment the kids start to morph.
So on and so forth. There are other issues with the show — including some seriously unfortunate decisions about ethics and some cringe-inducing gender roles — but “can’t work within the limits of our budget” is at the root of most of the biggest problems.

Oblivious MC - Headcanon
Arcana Characters (Main 5) x MC
*Nadia in an upcoming post*
A/N: Yay, more headcanons! I know these are slow but the new school system is kicking my butt. This next one is for the amazing @genderless-plant-likes-thearcana! They come up with lots of cool ideas for prompts to send to various writers, so you should definitely check out their profile! They came up with a super cute prompt this time; an MC who is super oblivious to their LI’s romantic interest in them! I really appreciate the specifics added in the request, they really helped me out! Thank you! While you’re reading you may notice the headcanons get a bit goofier as they though ;) my bad, but this prompt was too fun. Another side note: I ran out of bullet points and couldn’t fit Nadia into this post, so she’ll be getting her own! As always, I recognize Asra’s non-binary gender orientation but will be using he/him pronouns :) Please let me know if there are any spelling or grammar mistakes! Requests are open :)
❤️Julian❤️
He’s so in love with you
Like, more in love with you than he ever has been with anyone else
But he’s also insecure as heck
So when he starts dropping obvious hints about wanting to be in a relationship with you, and you just don’t get it...
He starts to think that maybe you only like him as a friend
I mean, he’s not being subtle at all
He flirts with you constantly, he sends you winks in the middle of a theatre rehearsal, he almost always has a hand on your should or back to guide you through the busier parts of Vesuvia...
Once he even stood up on a table in the middle of the Rowdy Raven and sang you a love song at the top of his lungs
You just thought he was being dramatic, as always
To you, Julian was an incredible friend
I mean, you maaay have had a teeeensy little crush on him, but he was such a sweetheart that you didn’t want to ruin the friendship you two had
You went on adventures together, you attended his theatre performances, and he did his best to support you in all your magical endeavours
Overall, the dynamic the two of you had was already incredible
And neither of you really wanted to ruin that
When Julian started thinking that maybe you only liked him as a friend he decided to be “selfless” and simply keep his feelings to himself
Of course, that would never work for long
Julian was a man of passion and, possible consequences be damned, he wanted you to know how he felt
So one day, when the two of you were at the Rowdy Raven together and he was tipsy enough to do something stupid, he stood up on the table and loudly announced his undying love for you
Believe me, even for Julian it was dramatic
It was a long speech about how amazing he thought you were, including vivid descriptions about each and every thing about your personality, appearance, and hobbies that he loved
So needless to say you needed cut him off a bit early so that the two of you wouldn’t be there all night
Unfortunately the first thought in your mind upon hearing this was “oh my stars he’s under some kind of spell”
You immediately dragged him out of the tavern and back to the magic shop to find some sort of cure, muttering theories under your breath the entire way
Julian, of course, was not under a spell and was feeling rather put out by your response to his confession
He wasn’t entirely sure where the two of you were going because you hadn’t bothered to share your suspicions with him (why would you? You thought he was being influenced by magic)
When the two of you reached your shop and you started skimming through books he finally asked what you were doing, seeming understandably surprised by the turn of events
You hesitated a bit, not knowing if it was worth explaining this to him, but settled on a brief explanation of “you’re under some kind of love potion and I need to break it” with a side of “please don’t do anything dumb while I try to help you”
Julian of course was, again, fairly shocked to hear this
A spell? What spell? He had been in love with you for months! There was no way it was a spell!
With his mind racing a mile a minute he finally realized what was going on
You were just really, really, REALLY oblivious to his feelings
This revelation caused him to laugh out loud, likely startling you out of your searching
When you looked at him in confusion and a bit of concern he only laughed louder, bending over and wheezing a bit
It took a while for him to calm down, even with your panicked response to his sudden change of emotion
When he was finally done laugiinh and had wiped the tears from his eyes he gave you the biggest grin he was possible of giving
He did his best to explain that no, he was not under a spell, no, he was not joking, and yes, he really did love you as more than a friend
He swears, the look on your face was worth the emotional rollercoaster he had been through that night
And you? Well, you probably needed a minute to process everything that he had just revealed
Of course, the feelings of love were mutual and you said as much when you could finally form words again
Julian was thrilled to hear that you loved him back
The two of you would be happy for many years to come, and even if Julian occasionally teased you about your obliviousness you could never truly be mad at him for it
🧡Portia🧡
She’s super open about just how much she loves you
Portia sees no reason to hide her true feelings, so she’s often very blunt about them
She’ll drop a “you’re gorgeous” or “I wanna kiss you” into a casual conversation like it’s nothing
But you somehow manage to not pick up on it
So of course, Portia doubles her efforts
She bakes you cookies in the shape of hearts, bring you nice flowers on her days off, and take you on what she considers dates, just waiting for you to pick up on her love for you
And yet none of this gets through to you
You think this is how Portia is with everyone
She was cheeky from the moment you met her, so when she tells you she wants to kiss you you just assume she’s joking
Everything else seems to just be an awesome friendship
Obviously Portia is super cute, and obviously dating her would be tons of fun, but there’s obviously NO WAY she could ever be interested in you like that... right?
Portia eventually starts to think you’re just messing with her
There’s no way you could be that oblivious
You definitely had to know she was into you, and you were just playing hard to get
She knows you have feelings for her too, the two of your wouldn’t be as close as you were otherwise
But, no offence, she’s getting a bit impatient
So she decides to just do what needs to be done
The two of you were walking through the market near your shop one day when she grabbed your arm to stop you in the middle of the crowd
She turned you so that you were facing her, looked you straight in the eye, and told you she loved you with the most serious expression you had ever seen on her face
As oblivious as you may be, there was no way for you to misinterpret this as anything other than the truth
Except there was
You assumed she was under a love spell
After the initial shock of finding out your friend was being influenced by magic was over, you immediately dragged her back to your shop without a word
Portia kinda thought you two were going home to make out and she was totally down with it
But when you entered the shop and started digging through your supplies, looking for something, she realized that maybe SHE had misinterpreted
She asked you what you were doing and nearly burst out laughing at the response
You thought she was under a spell? Seriously? You were actually that oblivious the whole time?
She thought it was the most hilarious thing she had heard in a long time
Eventually she managed to calm down enough to reassure you that, no, she was not under a spell
But of course you didn’t believe her, and thought that it was the spell talking
You went back to searching for an antidote while Portia continued trying to prove to you that she was genuinely in love with you
She listed the first time she realized she loved you, the first time she had said it to you to no response, the first time she had wanted to kiss you
She talked about how much she loved every part of you, from your personality, to your hobbies, to your insanely cool magic
Portia was nowhere near as dramatic as her brother could be, but she was very open about her love for you
Finally, you seemed to realize that she was telling the truth (no magic involved)
In turn, you confessed your feelings toward her as well
She gave you a bit of a sly grin and asked how she could be certain you weren’t under some magic spell
To this you responded by kissing her
So I guess she was right when she assumed you two were going back to your place to make out
The two of you were happy from then on, although Portia never let you forget just how dense you were
💛Lucio💛
It’s hard to imagine anyone could be so oblivious about his feelings
Lucio is the most in-your-face about his love for you
He leaves absolutely no room for doubt, which means it’s even more incredible that you don’t seem to get it
He has asked you to marry him about half a dozen times and you keep??? Laughing?? About it????
Doesn’t understand what’s happening
Nobody has ever done this sort of thing to him before, so his mind just blanks if he thinks about it too much
I mean there’s no way you could dislike him, right? You definitely return his feelings... RIGHT?
He’s insecure, but he’ll never admit that
Instead, he chooses to continue his over-the-top dramatic proposals and confessions until you say yes
On the other hand, you don’t really know what’s happening either
You know that Lucio’s a bit... strange, but this is a lot even for him
You start to think that maybe it’s his way of dealing with his feelings now that Nadia’s left him
So you decide to keep being a great friend to help him get through it!
And if that means wading through a bunch of strange emotional obstacles, then so be it!
(Lucio’s in the background banging his head against a wall in frustration)
It’s not like he doesn’t enjoy just being friends with you; he loves having someone around who genuinely cares about him
It’s just that he wants more
He hires people to build giant statues of you (which may be in poor taste, but who cares), he buys or sponsors all of your favourite shops, he always makes sure you get the best of everything
To you, this just seems like Lucio overcompensating for his previous “oopsies”
But one day it occurs to him that maybe you don’t understand his feelings because he’s going about it the wrong way
You’re pretty much immune to his dramatic proposals, so maybe he should try the opposite
So he put together a little plan
It wasn’t a particularly special night; no big occasion to be celebrated
He took you out to the balcony and leaned against the railing, looking oddly serious for someone who had no concept of emotional maturity
He took his time to prepare himself before speaking rather slowly and quietly in comparison to his usual tone
Lucio told you that he loved you, and he left no room for arguement
He didn’t embellish his words in any way, knowing that something simple would be the most likely way to get your attention
And boy did it work
You immediately assumed he was under some sort of spell
I mean Lucio? Acting like a normal person?? No way
You panicked right away and made a run for it, leaving Lucio behind on the balcony in your hurry to leave
Lucio, of course, was shocked, and more than a little offended to have been left so abruptly
People didn’t just leave him places without a good explanation
So obviously he chased you, yelling after you as you did your best to navigate the palace on your way to the library
Unfortunately for you, Lucio is surprisingly athletic and managed to catch you before you reached the door
He untactfully grabbed your arm, which caused you to scream, which caused him to scream, which caused everything to become even more of a mess than before
The two of you were just standing in the middle of the hall, screaming at each other
You wanted to find a way to free Lucio from whatever spell he was under, and Lucio wanted to know why you were running away
When you both calmed down (you being the first, of course), you explained your theory, which wounded Lucio’s ego even more than before
Lucio in return, replied in a not-so-polite manner, asking if you really thought he was stupid enough to be put under some dumb spell
Yes
Yes you did
Lucio had to explain his entire thought process behind confessing in such a normal way, which was pretty embarrassing from his perspective
But to you, it likely came across as sweet as it finally dawned on you that yes, he really was in love with you
The two of you probably had to immediately follow up the confession with a talk about whether or not he was serious about getting married
He was, but he didn’t want to make you feel awkward so he denied it
You two agreed to take things a little slower than he originally planned
The relationship was slightly awkward for the first few days, because neither of you quite understood what had happened the night of the confession
But either way, the two of you were happy, and that was all that mattered
(Although, when Lucio eventually asked you to marry him again it was just as chaotic and messy as the first time)
💚Muriel💚
Oh no, this won’t end well
Muriel is almost the epitome of insecure, so flirting is pretty much impossible for him
He tried a couple of times to be more forward, but when you didn’t respond to his advances he quickly backed down
He didn’t want to overstep, and immediately assumed you just wanted to be friends
Although, admittedly, he has seen other people flirt with you, and you don’t respond to them either
So maybe you’re just not interested in relationships? Or maybe you’re just as bad at flirting as he is
Either way, as much as he loved you, he didn’t push
From your perspective it would seem like Muriel just wanted to be friends
And frankly, anyone else around you would think the same thing
There was nothing particularly romantic about how Muriel acted around you
Arguably the boldest thing he was doing was spending so much time with you
But to you, this was simply a friendship
And of course, you greatly valued Muriel’s friendship
Once you had gotten past the rough exterior, you found that he was a giant sweetheart
He carved small wooden figures for you, and didn’t seem to mind spending time with you
Inanna loved you too, so that was a bonus
Your friendship with Muriel probably lasted much longer than it would have if either of you had any sense of romance
Neither of you tried to take things further because both of you were terrible at flirting and being flirted with
Eventually someone (Asra) had to step in and give Muriel a little push
Asra had known you for a long time, so he alerted Muriel to how oblivious you were and how to best confess his feelings
Muriel didn’t really want to confess at that point, because he didn’t want to make things awkward between you two if something went wrong
But his love for you outweighed his anxiety and he decided to do it anyway
It was a rather cold night, and the two of you were in his hut
You were both curled up by the fire (plus Inanna, of course), and you were telling Muriel a story about a particularly annoying customer from the day before
When you finished the story, a comfortable silence fell between you (which was something Muriel had always appreciated; silence with you was never awkward)
That was when Muriel took his chance and quietly told you he loved you
Except he said it too quietly and you didn’t hear him over the sound of the fire
I mean, you saw his lips move, and therefore asked him to repeat himself, but it was still quiet
Muriel hadn’t anticipated this, and accidentally repeated it in a voice that was much too loud for such a peaceful night
He immediately winced in embarrassment, only to be startled from it when you screamed
He had been anticipating rejection, but he thought a scream may have been a bit dramatic
But of course, you didn’t see it as a rejection; you thought Muriel was under a love spell
Why else would your quiet, anti-social friend suddenly confess to something you had never even seen him hint at before?
And more importantly, who had out the spell on him? Most people didn’t know about him, so it was either someone close to him, or someone EXTREMELY powerful.
You didn’t know which one was worse
You leaned forward, cupping his face in your hands and staring into his eyes, promising that you would help him
This only succeeded in confusing him, the poor man
He didn’t know what you were talking about, and you were starting to freak him out a little
When he asked if you were alright, you started to look confused too
You reminded him that he was the one under the spell, not you
Cue a chorus of confused “what?”s being exchanged by two confused people
In the end, Muriel realized that you had thought he was under a spell when he suddenly confessed
He blushed as red as a tomato and did his best to string together enough words to explain to you that he wasn’t
He genuinely loved you
He also quietly cursed Asra for making him confess, which suddenly helped a lot of pieces fit together for you
You nodded along and agreed that Asra’s meddling was problematic in this case
In the end the two of you spent a fair portion of the night just talking out your feelings and realizing that maybe you would like to be more than friends
Both of you were blushing a lot throughout the entire thing, and years later when the two of you were happy together, you mutually decided to never bring up how you had gotten together in the first place
Asra, however, had somehow found out, and was determined to never let either of you live it down
💙Asra💙
Subtlety? Never heard of it
Asra is the absolute best at letting you know just how much he loves you
Even despite your obliviousness, you are fully aware that he loves you
And of course, you love him back!
How could you not?
Except, the way you see it... it’s platonic love
And Asra is 100% okay with that!
You two share a heart, so he fully understands that you view the live that you two share as platonic
This doesn’t really bother him; as long as you’re alive and happy, that’s all that matters
He’s perfectly content to pursue a strong friendship with you
But of course, being the cheeky legend that he is, he has to slip in some flirting and teasing once in a while
He’ll wink at you in the middle of work, casually brush against you while passing you in the shop, and hold your hand as often as possible
But of course, you view this as friendship
Who doesn’t cuddle with their best friend literally every night? That’s totally normal
You couldn’t ask for a better friend than Asra; he’s always there when you need him and he somehow always seems to know how you feel
You’re incredibly grateful to know him, and you feel safe and comfortable living in the same space as him
Yep, definitely only friendship feelings
He shows his love in little ways to you every day
The two of you live together, so of course you will occasionally have a petty arguement and try to stay seperate for a while, but that doesn’t stop him
He’ll “forget” which chores are yours and do a couple for you, he’ll make your favourite drink “by accident” and then claim he isn’t thirsty, and he’ll casually send Faust into the same room as you if he thinks you’re crying
Overall, just a great partn- I mean friend
He doesn’t really feel the need to confess to you, but if he notices that you’re starting to feel a more romantic attraction toward him then he’ll definitely take advantage of that
If you only wanted to be friends, then, well, that was one thing
But if you wanted to be something more... then he was definitely more than okay with that as well
Asra didn’t exactly plan out how he would confess to you, and instead waited for what he felt was the right moment
He knew it would come eventually, and there was no real rush
So when the two of you were travelling together, and you were both stargazing late at night, the feeling struck him
You had just settled down from laughing at a joke when he gently tilted your chin so you were looking into his eyes
He told you he loved you, but there was certainly something more personal this time
But of course you were incredibly oblivious so you just grinned and said it back, not really thinking about it too much
Of course Asra knew you had missed the point, so when you went back to looking at the stars he propped himself up so he was leaning over you a bit and repeated it
This probably confused you a bit, but you said it back again, thinking that maybe this was some kind of game
He held back a laugh and tried again, this time putting more emphasis on the “love” part
You missed it, and repeated it back
At this point he was trying not to laugh, and knew that he had only one more try before he wouldn’t be able to hold it back
This time he tried explaining more thoroughly
He told you he loved you romantically; as in, a love that was more than platonic. Romantic, soulmate kind of love. Not friendship. Please get it this time.
Your mouth formed a perfect “o” as you finally got his point
For a brief moment, Asra felt relief, thinking that he had finally gotten his point across
Instead he received immediate and extreme panic as you quickly shoved him away. While screaming.
This certainly hadn’t gone as planned
He was desperately trying to calm you down while you rambled about every place you two had been on your trip, trying to locate a time where Asra could’ve been put under a love spell
Asra, of course, found this hilarious, and started laughing harder and harder while also trying to calm you down
This only caused you more distress, and soon there were tears streaming down your face while you tried to convince him that no, this wasn’t funny
He knew you were genuinely concerned about him, and he genuinely was trying to stop, but this had come out of nowhere and he didn’t really know how to respond either
Eventually, you both managed to calm down (but only the kind of calm where he would occasionally look at you and burst into giggles again)
He did his best- between giggle fits- to explain to you that he genuinely did love you and he definitely wasn’t under any spell
He told you that he had loved you for years, and that he always would
He also subtley pointed out that he had been flirting for years and you had just been completely oblivious
No confession would truly be complete without a bit of teasing
You probably felt a bit embarrassed, but he reassured you that it was just a part of your charm
Of course, you told him you felt the same, and the two of you went back to watching the stars, this time just a bit closer than before
From then on, not a whole lot changed in your relationship
The two of you were practically in a romantic relationship already, so really all that was different was a few more kisses and a slightly different intention behind the “I love you”s the two of you shared

Love Letters
In a world where you can anonymously send letters to your soulmate, a sudden lack of response could mean anything from your soulmate not wanting to hear from you or them even being dead. Your soulmate isn’t responding- surely that has nothing to do with the events of the Dread Doctors?
masterlist
You flop down on your bed, arms folded across your chest. Why does it have to be so exhausting to live in Beacon Hills? You’re no supernatural, and have no intention of ever becoming one, but you still find yourself wrapped up in every trouble that comes to your hometown. Next to you, Lydia looks up with a sympathetic smile.
“Research getting to you?” You nod, looking at the piles of mythology books stacked around your room. “You could say that. It feels like I’ve read every book about fantasy monsters in existence, but yet I’ve barely found a single thing on the Dread Doctors or anything remotely like them. Sometimes I wish I was a banshee too, so I could just open any book and find what I’m looking for.” Lydia rolls her eyes. “Y/N, we both know that’s not how being a banshee works.” You groan and roll onto your stomach, picking up the next book on your stack. “Then how did you manage to find a book talking about them on your first go? I can’t find anything!” Lydia smirks. “I had a lucky guess. Now come on, we only have a few more to go and then we’ll be done.”
You heave a dramatic sigh and open the heavy tome in front of you, idly flipping through the pages to find the demonic Dread Doctors that you’re looking for. Instead, you come across a letter tucked in between two chapters of the book. You pluck the letter from the pages, examining it to find that it’s just like all the others that have come before it. It’s the same worn lined paper, encased in the same plain but slightly warped envelope. A single glance reveals that the same slanted handwriting is scrawled across the page. You turn it over in your hands, basking in the feeling of warmth that spreads across you at the sight of it.
Across the room, Lydia looks up at you, noticing the envelope in your hands. “Another letter from your soulmate?” You nod, giving it one last treasured glance before putting it delicately beside you and turning back to your book. You’ll open it later, once you are alone and can give it all the attention it deserves.
You’re not sure quite when you first started receiving letters from your soulmate, but you do remember the thrill it brought you to see the first one arrive. You’d seen your parents send each other letters when they were too busy to call before, so this wasn’t your first time witnessing a soulmate’s letter arrive. Your mother would be helping you with homework when a letter would suddenly appear in front of her, or your father would be sitting at his desk and turn over a paper to find an envelope tucked into the stack of documents he was reviewing. All people are given soulmates, and all soulmates will be able to write to each other, it just depends on how willing your soulmate is to hear from you.
There are rules to the letter-writing, of course. You cannot force your soulmate to write to you, and it’s best if you alternate who sends letters. Your aunt always told the story of some girl who was so excited about her soulmate that she sent him ten letters a day, and was surprised when her soulmate suddenly forgot to write. All you have to do to send the letter is simply finish writing it, hold it in your hand and think of your soulmate, and it will disappear from sight and reappear wherever your soulmate will find it. And, the most infuriating rule of all- no private information can be shared through the letters. No names (first or last), no addresses, no clues to help your soulmate find you. If you try to include such hints to your identity, they are simply blurred out when your letter is transferred to your soulmate. They will be unblurred once you meet your soulmate, because by then your soulmate will know who you are and they won’t have to rely on you simply telling them your name to find you.
So, you and your soulmate have given up trying to include any personal information- what’s the point when it’ll just be erased? They say it’s better that way, that if it’s too easy to find your better half you won’t experience the longing and slow love that should precede that first meeting, but you’re not sure if you believe that. Wouldn’t it be better to just know who they are?
Thus, the letter in front of you does not bear any address or signatures. Just a phrase, penned across the front of the envelope: To my soulmate. That’s all it takes.
Once you’re finally done paging through the mythology books with Lydia, she bids you goodbye and you can finally turn to the letter that’s been a silent distraction beside you all night. Eagerly, you tear open the envelope and unfold the paper inside. The letter is one page long, and full of everything from accounts of his day to his plans for the future. At the bottom, he’s simply signed the letter: Love, me.
You savor his words for a few seconds longer, then turn to your desk and gently place the letter in a box sitting inside one of the drawers. You’ve kept all his letters, and every now and then, when you feel most distressed, you take them out and read them, one by one, until your fears blend away into the background and are replaced by the light heat in your cheeks. You won’t write another letter until tomorrow- it’s become a tradition that you and your soulmate will alternate days sending letters- but when you go to sleep that night, your head is spinning thinking of everything you want to say to him.
You sit down next to Lydia at Scott’s kitchen table, too tired to say anything longer than “So we did it.” You’re still overwhelmed by everything that just happened- the Dread Doctors are finally gone from Beacon Hills, along with them their accomplice Theo Raeken, and that ghastly Beast that nearly killed everyone you hold dear. At this point, you’re barely able to keep your eyes open, but Scott has still insisted on holding a pack meeting to make sure everyone’s alright and that the threats are finally over, for the time being. It feels like danger will never be truly gone from Beacon Hills.
As you hear the low voices of Scott’s pack around you, you stare listlessly at your hands. It’s a late night, and you’ve been expecting a letter from your soulmate for a while. Usually, he sends them some time at night, and it’s his day to write. Yet your hands are empty, and there are no letters in sight. Whatever, he’s probably busy. It’s not like you’ve never accidentally skipped writing on your day- there have been times when you’ve been too busy fighting with Scott and his pack to send your soulmate a letter. Although the chances of him having the same excuse are pretty low, you decide to stop worrying about it. The letter will probably come tomorrow, anyways.
But it doesn’t. In fact, no letter arrives all day. Or the next. After four days, you decide to write your soulmate a brief note, just asking if your last letter arrived or not. Your soulmate has never missed a day before, even by a few hours, so this sudden development is more than a little surprising. Finally, a week after you sent your note to your soulmate and still no response, you decide to go to Lydia for help.
“He hasn’t responded in more than a week. What if he’s hurt? What if something happened? You’re pacing in front of Lydia, feeling the stress wash over you in waves. “He’s never gone a day without sending a letter, why is this happening?” Lydia steps in front of you, stopping your panicked outburst. “I know you’re worried, but let’s be calm about this. Maybe you should reread some of his old letters? You can check and see if he seems stressed or in danger, or if he doesn’t want to write anymore.”
You accept Lydia’s advice and pull out the box of your soulmate’s letters. You start flipping through them, looking for any signs of trouble. To Lydia’s credit, your soulmate does seem a little tense in the past few letters, and he keeps mentioning how stressed he was even in the middle of summer vacation. You’re checking to see how far back he mentioned his fears in his letters, when you come across one envelope from about six months back. You open it, scanning the inked lines when your breath catches in your throat.
Lydia looks over at you in concern. “What’s wrong, Y/N?” All you can do is hold up the letter to her, displaying your soulmate’s first initial and his hometown. Lydia’s eyes go wide. “That’s personal information. How can you see it?” You shake your head, still shocked. “I must have met him in the last few months. The letter wasn’t sent that long ago, and I certainly couldn’t read that when he sent it. The thing is,” you rummage through some more letters to prove your point, “I haven’t gone anywhere outside of Beacon Hills, and people don’t come here for vacation. He also mentioned moving to a small town around the beginning of the school year. That means he must have been here recently.”
Another realization hits you, and you feel your heart sink. “Lydia, what if he was killed by the Beast or the Dread Doctors? With everything going on, there’s a pretty big chance of it. Think about it- he was in Beacon Hills during the attacks, he’s now not responding to me. Oh, Lydia, I think he’s dead.” Lydia puts her hands on your shoulders and forces you to look at her. “Listen to me, Y/N. You don’t know if he’s dead. So, let’s assume he’s not. Right now, we do have a good amount of information, so we can probably track him down. Focus your energy on finding your soulmate, not on worrying about every negative thing that could have happened to him.
You can’t bear to think of your soulmate being dead, and so you throw yourself into finding every last clue about your soulmate’s identity. In his letters, he mentioned being able to hear his parents cooking dinner right next to his bedroom, so the house must have a kitchen right near the stairs. Stiles looks into this and finds a list of houses with that floor plan, leaving you to wonder how it’s possible for Stiles to be so creepily good at research. Your soulmate also said that he’d been learning how to skateboard, so through many hours of careful observation at school, you compile a list of every student known to have a skateboard. He talks about having friends on the lacrosse team? Scott and Liam can tell you about anyone who hangs around after lacrosse practice.
Finally, you’ve got a list of about ten people. You’ve taped it to your mirror just like Stiles during his investigations, and you stare at it with Lydia.
“I still don’t know who it could be. Most of these people don’t share all the characteristics mentioned in the letters.” Lydia says, looking in turn at each person on the list. You sigh softly. “Actually, I think I know. There’s only one person on here that could be him. Besides, he has a pretty good reason for not being here.” Lydia looks at you, the truth starting to dawn on her. “You don’t mean-” You nod. “Yes. Theo Raeken is my soulmate.”
Lydia groans. “Couldn’t you have someone nice instead? In fact, are you sure it’s him and not someone else? I mean, Thomas and Tyler both haven’t been seen in a while, it could be one of them instead.” You tilt your head to the side, considering the names on the list. “I’m afraid not. Thomas moved schools and I saw Tyler the other day. Besides, I’ve seen Theo’s handwriting from when he still went to our school and it’s basically the same. I don’t know why I didn’t think of it earlier.” Lydia looks at you pointedly. “You didn’t think of it because you have no proof that he’s your soulmate other than the fact that their handwriting kind of looks similar.” You smile at that. “Maybe so, but he’s the closest of anyone.” You grab your phone off of a nearby table and stick it in your pocket. “I have to find out if it’s really him. I’m going to go visit his house and see if any of my letters are there.” At Lydia’s sigh, you look back at her. “I have to know if he’s really my soulmate. I have to.”
It’s a fine, sunny afternoon when you reach Theo’s house. His parents aren’t there, but you’re able to get in through an unlocked side door. You creep up the stairs (note the kitchen exactly where it’s supposed to be!) and into the closest bedroom. You scan the desk and chairs, looking for some sign that he’s your soulmate. Finally, you find what you’ve been looking for- a stack of letters hidden in a corner of the room. You pick up the top one, opening it to find your own handwriting scrawled across it. “So it’s true,” you say to yourself, holding the letter tight, “my soulmate is dead.” Suddenly, a voice behind you breaks the silence.
“Not quite.”
You whirl around to see Theo, alive and well, standing behind you. You can barely stammer out a few sentences. “You- how did you- you were-” “In Hell?” You nod, still dumbfounded. “Liam and Hayden let me out. They needed my help for some plan of theirs to defeat the Ghost Riders.” Theo pulls out a letter from his jacket pocket and holds it out to you. “I was going to just send it like usual, but I figured it would be easier to give it to you in person.” Your hands shaking, you take the letter from him. Sure enough, it’s the same envelope and letter as always, except this time your name is written across the front instead of just ‘My soulmate.”
You look back up at him, still confused. “How did you know you were my soulmate if you just got out of Hell?” Theo laughs at that. “It’s kind of funny, actually. I was just standing there, and then a few letters appeared in my hands. The second Liam saw them, he got this look in his eyes like he’d seen them before. He wasn’t going to tell me that you were my soulmate, something about the fact that I was a betraying killer and didn’t deserve to know, but Hayden told me. She said that you’d been searching for me for a while and that you should know I was alright.”
You turn the letter over in your hands, still somewhat surprised that it’s all true. You had long suspected that Theo was your soulmate- everything lined up and it would make sense that he disappeared- but seeing him in person and confirming the truth was still enough to make your head spin. “Why do you care?” Your voice, barely louder than a whisper, is still enough to make Theo flinch. “You tried to kill us, even me. Why does it matter now that I’m your soulmate?”
Theo’s voice comes slower now, and it seems as if his usual cocky confidence is starting to fade away. “When I came out of Hell, I knew I needed to do better, both by the pack and by you. I want a fresh start, Y/N, and I want to be with you. I’m sorry for what I did, I just need to know that you’ll still want me as your soulmate.” He looks up at you, and you find yourself startled by the pain in his eyes. You’ve seen him upset before, back when he was still trying to win over Scott and Stiles, but this feels more genuine. “Of course I want you, Theo. You’re my soulmate. I wouldn’t want anyone else.” Theo’s smile is sunshine on a cloudy day, bright enough to scare away any possibility that he wasn’t telling the truth before. “I think that’s the best thing I’ve ever heard.” You share his smile, and can finally bask in the joy of finding your soulmate.

Steve announces his arrival with a loud sigh and dragging feet.
Late nights always make him melancholy.
“Look who the cat dragged in,” you say, after he’s dramatically swung the door shut. “How was your day?”
He drops his keys on the counter with a clatter, and then looks over at you, unsmiling. A pinprick of something urges your insides, there and gone in a flash.
“Tedious,” he says, shrugging off his blazer and flinging it over the back of the couch with more vigor than necessary, like he’s trying to fling off the day’s tediousness with it. “I’m so tired.”
At his words, it comes back beyond just a pinprick- it comes back blazing. You set your book aside, hurriedly dog-earing your page, and rise to meet him. He just stands still and waits. Gives you a weak smile, almost shy.
Back off, you almost say, to an intruder that doesn’t exist. You get like that, sometimes- sometimes it’s hard to believe that he is even yours. It’s your own version of melancholy, that sting in your chest you get at the realization that you get to be alone with him.
Just you and him and the dim lamplight and the Chinese takeout in grease-spotted containers on the kitchen counter, and the flutter in your stomach when he places both hands on your shoulders.
“I missed you,” he says.
You bring a hand up to rest over his own. His skin, rough-hewn but scarless, presses hot against yours.
The sting is bad, but the sudden aching is even worse.
“I missed you, too,” you say.
You dare yourself to draw closer- spurred on by his skin and the ache and the way his dress shirt is undone one button down and pulled so taut against his chest that it seems like the seams might split. But as soon as your forehead is close to gently knocking against his, he pulls away.
“I need to shower,” he says and drops his hands like they’re weights.
Your hand brushes over the fabric of your own shirt.
He steps away from you and starts towards the bedroom, with its door barely cracked open, spilling dark blue shadow.
“I’ll join you.”
His step falters.
You hold your ground as he turns back.
How did you not notice those under-eye bags?
“Honey…” he starts, like he’s about to plead, even though he doesn’t.
He just ends the thought right there, with a diplomatic pressing of his lips together. Rejecting you without saying it outright.
You think that it’s okay though. Steve is always trying to find time for himself, in spare moments, in the in-betweens. You can only imagine how bad he wants a moment alone after he’s been gone for so long-
But Steve can only imagine how bad you want him after he’s been gone for so long-
“Oh” you say, so loud that both of you wince. You press your fingertips into the sides of your thighs, and even through the fabric, your own touch feels too harsh. “No problem.”
His face shifts. Another smile, all pearly teeth and crinkled eyes, almost gleeful- he’s caught you doing something you shouldn’t.
“After,” he promises, or compromises. You’re more transparent than you remember, or maybe he’s just too perceptive. He turns away from you again and disappears into the bedroom, swallowed by the shadow.
You stand breathless for a moment, caught on the afterthought of his figure, and then go back to retrieve your book.
Distantly, the shower turns on.
You wait for the promised or compromised after and a fantastic tangle of vines grows in your stomach, blooming and thorny. It’s easier to wait when you’re closer, so you head to the bedroom, too, settling on your side of the bed. You crack open your book.
Only then you realize that you didn’t turn on the lights. You flick on the bedside lamp, trying to read with fingers that are already shaking with anticipation of what you’ll do to him, do for him. Words have never been less enticing.
You’ve barely struggled through a page when the shower turns off. Was that fast? It’s impossible to tell- you left your phone outside and keep no clock on your nightstand.
For your own, sake, as you wait, painfully, you tell yourself that it was. You adjust the neck of your shirt like it’s going to do something- like it’s going to convince him- and then try to steady your clamoring heartbeat by taking too many deep breaths.
It’s an attempt to look casual, but also alluring. Static but persuasive. Is that counterintuitive?
Maybe you’re being a terrible partner. Maybe you should just go to bed and worry about this in the morning. But you can’t bring yourself to- you don’t want to rest, and even though he needs it, you don’t want Steve to rest, either. You just want him here.
Also, you still haven’t taken off your socks.
You take off your socks.
That’s how he finds you, when he steps out. Barefoot, hopelessly trying to read, brow furrowed while barely keeping everything- your hands and your thighs and your thoughts- in check.
You look up.
He’s shirtless, and in sweatpants, and his hair curls damp at the base of his neck. Before he closes the door, you catch a sliver of foggy mirror in the bathroom behind him, dripping condensation the same way a spare bead of water drips down the side of his neck, and there’s water in your mouth now, too- the sight of him is mouthwatering.
Sculpted muscle and skin almost ivory-white, his summer tan faded off, eyes oasis blue, spidery lashes. And his mouth- hopelessly lovely, pretty pink and duty-bound, good even when no one deserves it.
You close your book and decisively set it on the nightstand.
He doesn’t move.
“Are you just going to stand there?” you ask, and clamp a fist over the comforter to ground yourself, and to discreetly wipe your palm dry- you’ve been sweating in anticipation.
He blinks. His eyelashes, still clustered together with water, kiss his cheeks.
“No,” he says lightly, and takes a dragging step forward.
He must think he’s being kind by ignoring your impatience. But really, he’s being infuriating.
So you move for him, rising and biting hard on the inside of your cheek to keep yourself from saying something you shouldn’t. Restraint is easier in here, in this room with its lights turned off and its doors closed, with its absence of clocks and dark blue shadows and its cool green sheets that wrinkle too easily.
You reach him and stand close, chest brushing against his. He smells like he accidentally used your body wash, again, like warm vanilla- sweet.
“I missed you,” he says again, and closes his eyes as you take his face in your hands, to kiss him quietly.
He tastes sweet, too.
Gently, still holding his face like it is something fragile- it is something fragile, at times like this- you guide him back and back until his legs hit the foot of the bed, and you bend to still be with him as he sits. He murmurs something unintelligible against your mouth.
When you sink to your knees his eyes fly open, like he sensed it, and he looks startled, like he doesn’t know where he is.
He gets that look more often than you would like, and even when it’s unintentional, it hurts. But you try to take it as a testament to the effect you have on him, overinflating yourself with more self-importance than you deserve, deeming yourself more necessary than you really are.
What’s the harm in a little ego, if it helps you get through this?
“You’re going to-” he starts, and you tug at his waistband and he goes quiet. Because he’s elated, or nervous, or simply irritated, because he just wants to sleep and you just want to fuck.
“Yeah,” you say, and gently push the fabric down to reveal him, already hard, already ready.
Not irritated, then.
“You’re too good to me,” he says, and his voice hitches at the end of his sentence. Just barely hinting at future to disarray.
“Only to you,” you say, and spit in your palm and relish in his gasp as you take his cock in your hand, erect and flushed and impatient- it’s his turn for impatience, now. You smile a little, teasingly. “Captain.”
“Don’t,” he groans, “don’t- fuck.”
Any time he swears, drops his stuffy righteousness and propriety usually so carefully adorned, you feel like smiling. And so you do, as you slowly work him in your hand, coating him slick before bringing your mouth, as softly as possible.
Enveloping him, velvet-hot, staying just as slow, just as maddening, twisting the knife.
He deserves it.
It’s slow, but filthy. Even though he’s just showered, you’re not above making a mess- you’re not above anything, right now, and so you look him in the eyes and drool and gag and choke, all in the way that he’s always too ashamed to say he likes, even though you know he likes it, because he wouldn’t say your name like it’s being ripped from him if he didn’t-
It trips him over the edge, sends him spiraling, approaching that cloudy bliss, nearly threatening to take you with him.
The sight of him is enough.
You always know when he’s about to come- his thighs tense and his eyes screw shut and his breathing goes shuddery, and he’s fisting the comforter so tightly that his knuckles go white-
You pull your mouth off, fast.
He opens his eyes as the noise resounds through the room, that obscene pop, and looks at you with pure desperation.
“What-“
He isn’t able to finish his sentence. The pain in his eyes is kind of delicious- you wish you felt bad for relishing in it.
“Lie down,” you say, more unevenly than you would have liked, so that it comes out as more of a suggestion than a command.
Steve takes it as a command anyway.
Obediently, with his breathing ragged and hands shaky, he kicks off the remainder of his clothing and lies down.
The angry imprint of the carpet fibers stings your knees. You stand up with some semblance of dignity- unflinching, setting your shoulders straight, not bothering to wipe your mouth.
With Steve watching, you pull your shirt off your head.
The movement is difficult, stressing, arduous- again, you’re trying to balance the scales. Trying to fall somewhere in between ripping your clothes off the way you want to- like someone unhinged- and trying to peel them off slowly, smoothly, more sensuously than you can muster.
You shimmy off your pajama shorts, and then linger for a moment. Showing yourself off- for your own self. Maybe. It’s still so uncertain- you push the thought away by unhooking your bra and letting it fall to the floor.
“Do you like these?” you ask prettily, hooking two thumbs into the thin string waist of your underwear.
Pale purple, with a suggestive lace trim.
“Yes,” he grits out, and then pleads your name, in a long, broken-up whine.
It’s funny how fast it switched up- weren’t you supposed to be the desperate one?
You slip the panties off, moving like water, leaning too far into that side you aren’t sure you actually possess, crawling atop him. It’s just your skin and his skin and the night winking in through the window curtains, less comforting than dark.
Should you kiss him? You bring your head low towards him, but he’s blushing like he’s just said something he regrets. Pink all the way down to his neck, eyes averted. It’s unnerving.
So you settle for something chaste, with his mouth and your mouth and the rough scrape of his beard on your cheek that amounts to nothing.
You sit over him, right on the edge, and press one hand hard against his chest. You feel him trembling against you. Alive. With your other hand, you reach for one of his, cradling it even though it engulfs your own, and bring it, slowly, to the slick heat between your thighs.
He gasps.
You’re soaked.
Is it really that surprising?
Just look at him- flushed skin and broad, contoured muscle, sweat in the hollow of his throat and the darkening curls of hair starting at his navel and trailing below, where he waits, glimmering wet with your own spit-
“Look what you do to me,” you whisper, because talking out loud suddenly feels wrong, like someone is about to rise from some unassuming corner and swat your hands away, reminding you, reprimanding you that there’s no touching allowed.
His fingers flutter, and you’ve been coiled so tightly this whole time that it only takes a split second for you to feel the sparks, and then his fingers jerk, uncharacteristically ungentle at your clit, all swollen and sensitive-
You swat his hand away- no touching allowed.
When you sink over him, there is a stretch- like always- and then that burn so intense, that pleasure so insane. You rock yourself slow, sluggish, molasses-thick. At first to accommodate, and then to drag this out as long as possible. It’s a bit like agony, riding him, with your hands splayed flat on his abdomen, feeling his muscle undulate beneath you, waves cresting.
He chokes out a moan.
“Does this feel good?” you ask, as he peers up at you from under heavy-lidded eyes, with pupils so dilated that they’re more black than blue.
“Yeah,” he says weakly, and already, the molten heat in your stomach is starting to rise, with that cold undercurrent of release beneath it, the epiphany.
“Yeah?” you prompt, and abruptly rock back and forth, so that you drag against him.
His hands fly to your hips so fast that they blur.
“Yes,” he groans, and you smile- a concentrated effort, what with your thoughts falling so incoherent, “your pussy feels so good.”
“I’m taking care of you,” you say, for either or both him and yourself, “right now.”
“You are,” he agrees, halfway delirious, covered in a sheen of sweat. You start, tortuously, to rise up and down, with his hands there to steady you, to rock you further.
He breathes in broken gasps, grating and hot and heavy and even louder in the dark, and to focus you stay on the lovely swell of his mouth, and how curses are just dripping from him, with your name thrown in between like they are all words necessary to be said, wrong and vital and interchangeable-
His eyes screw shut.
“I’m going to come,” he whispers, almost guiltily.
He’s feeling the pressure of the moment, split apart down the middle. Torn in half. Maybe you’re too conceited, but you can’t help yourself- you think that it is all you. Everything is all you- hands and breathing and heat and his promise and your awaiting catharsis.
“Come for me, honey,” you murmur, softly.
Only now do you register how rough his grip is- harsh on your skin, bruising.
Is it really conceited to think something if it is true?
Everything falls into a scramble when he comes, and soon after you’re filled with brilliant heat, toes arching, hands shaking, bodies tense and limp, sheets hopelessly wrinkled, thighs tensed, sweat glittering on your hairline, more broken breathing.
The heavy, unbothered silence of the seconds after.

I need to gush about Honor Bound for a bit, I apologize for how long this might get, but I figured it can’t be too wrong to show gratitude for something you hold dear! I found Honor Bound through the “Bleeding through the Bandages” chapter in book 4. I got into whump around that time, mainly as a coping mechanism for my own pain, and I saw that chapter pop up on my dashboard and I didn’t really consider it was part of a bigger story and I needed a distraction so I was like, might as well. And then it ended up being the best depiction of what I was feeling that I’ve ever read; not just the pain, but the frustration, and the exhaustion, and the mind-numbing boredom shown in other chapters too. I read the previous chapters of book 4 and then decided I wanted Context and also More Sam and then I read the first three books in two days. And then I reread them all in one day because I needed to reprocess the journey that was. And then I reread all of them again with book 4 when it finished, and then religiously followed book 5 through the worst time I’ve ever had, and reread the previous books multiple times as 5 was updating as well. Needless to say it quickly became my comfort series, and on multiple occasions waiting for a new chapters was one of those little joys that kept me going. I am so, so thankful I found it when I did. The Honor Bound family is like no other found family, at least to me. All of them are such complex individuals, but their interpersonal relationships are just so deep and meaningful and each is so incredibly unique, I could honestly write essays upon essays analyzing each one. And the way you connect everything and weave tropes into the overarching plot is just Insane, it’s truly like you’re… retelling a story that actually happened, you know? Like these are real people and real stories. Because I can’t com prehend how you come up with some of this stuff. And there are so, so many “cinematic” moments that are just. So raw and hard-hitting and just stay with you. Big and small moments alike. The Ryan reveal, Joseph Stormbeck’s death (best death scene ever by the way?? I’ve told everyone I know about it when I read it I was absolutely in Awe. Never recovering from that), every moment between Sam and Isaac (I also have a sibling who I’m not technically related to by blood but would like, probably die for, so I just really appreciated everything about them and we need more stories like theirs) (and also every time Sam called Isaac out. Good for them), Sam talking Gavin through his caning holy shit that was a religious moment, Gray’s slowburn adoption of Gavin and when Gavin decided he wanted to be a Uriah (and how his initial thought to getting asked what he wants to be called was “Moore”. And then he was like “Well fuck.” Love that dumbass), just every single thing Finn ever did for the family, Finn and Ellis and Gavin’s monologue about giving Finn a concussion (!! chills!!) and their reunion after Coleen, Vera and Tori and the Work Song scene??, Vera and Tori lowkey adopting Edrissa and Edrissa’s character development and her rants about pretty things and her and Sam and Zachariah’s adorable Young Love that made me so giddy right along with them and Sam and Zachariah’s meet-ugly (I mean it was kinda sweet), Gray being the parental figure we all needed, and Nata and Zelda and Nata helping Sam (and now Gavin!!) and Vera being so proud of her puppy. Also, Isaac and Gavin’s relationship…Insane. The most dramatic enemies to lovers and I love them for it. Invented love. It’s so crazy to read the beginning and see how far everyone’s come and think about everything that has happened from that one Whumptober prompt. It’s a lot but it also makes so, so much sense. I can’t imagine a version where Isaac and Gavin aren’t together in some way (and since I started out of order, when I realized it was a enemies to lovers I was really excited to see how all of that happened. Especially after reading the first book, because it (1/2)
(2/2) was like, how the hell are they gonna get from point A to point B. No way those are the same characters, how is this ever going to get justified? And then Gavin ended up having the best character development Ever, and I love that, I love that he had to work for it and that we as the readers have to work to love him too, because it pays off). And now the ending of book 5! Oh God. On that note, you’re so good at writing villains; making them human and also absolutely detestable and killing them off in the most satisfactory way tailored to them. There was never a point after a major arc where I thought “oh, I wish this had happened instead of x, I wish this had gone this way instead”. Also, to go back on the topic of pain (physical and mental both)! The way everyone copes with it differently, it’s the same thing but it’s unique to the person dealing with it and that’s so clear in your characters, and I also love, love how you made a point of showing how pain changes people because that’s something that I find so often gets ignored, whether voluntarily or not, even in whump. But, yeah, pain definitely changes people. And that’s not always bad, and it’s not always drastic, but it happens and it’s not a shameful thing. Everyone breaks. And HB made me believe that I was allowed to break, and that it’s still possible to live a life you think is worth it. And I won’t even get into how much it’d taught me about friendship and family and how it made me reflect on my own relationships with my loved ones (especially Isaac’s perspective, oh God). It’s just such a rewarding journey. That’s the best word to describe it, I think. And this latest chapter: “The sun shone brightly on the hood of the car, so bright Isaac almost had to close his eyes. The wind moved through the trees that swayed on either side of the lane. Isaac rolled his window down, and he could hear the birds calling to each other, and the sound of the wind rustling the long grasses that smelled so green. With each heartbeat, Gavin relaxed in his arms, his head falling against Isaac’s shoulder, his breaths becoming deep and slow again. A tear rolled down Isaac’s cheek, and he hid his smile against Gavin’s hair.” That image. It’s so vivid and visceral. It gives me the exact same feeling as spring after a long winter (which is…super fitting, actually). It’s that moment of pure contentedness when you realize it’d all been worth it. I don’t know, it just really, really struck me, and I’m so glad the book ended on that note. Despite knowing more hurt awaits, even that feels okay, because happiness will always find a way to seep through. And God, do they deserve that! It’s gonna be heartbreaking when their story ends, but I also know it’s gonna feel right. Like a peaceful retirement. Just, thank you for sharing this world with us, Athena. I hope you’re aware how meaningful this story is to so many of us. And being able to follow it in real-time and hear your inputs and chat about the characters and scream in the comments and reblogs is such a privilege (and being able to read it for free at all? Five books (six counting Vera)! For free! Though I will be getting books 1 and 2 soon hopefully actually). I cannot wait for book 6 and I Will be crying about book 5 until then (and long afterwards, most likely). And I wish you all the best in everything you take on next.<3
Wow, I... wow. I had to set down my phone and just sit in silence after I read this. I’m just... so humbled and amazed that you were able to connect so much with the story and the characters. I’m so glad that you saw something of yourself, and that you were able to find comfort in it. I find comfort in them, too, just knowing that the characters are there when I need to write them.
It’s important to me for things to turn out ‘right.’ That’s part of why I write whump: the bad guys can be defeated, the good guys emerge safe, and love prevails. Writing Isaac and Gavin’s love story was absolutely the biggest surprise for me, it really did feel like I was the last to know. But I treasure them both so much and I love writing them. The family is so fun to explore, with each relationship being so different from the other. I’ve poured so much of myself into this story and into every single one of the characters.
Book 6 is going to be such a challenge. It’s the last book in the series, and the one that’ll (hopefully) tie everything together. I’m giving myself a little break, but I’m also a little scared to start it because once I start it, then each chapter will be closer to the end, and then it’ll be over. I have a few more things in store for the family but at the end, I hope they’re safe, happy, and together. These characters mean more to me than I can say and I’m so happy I’ll have you with me along the way.

Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe…they do! They really, really do! This was such a phenomenal book! It’s 1987 and narrator Ari is a 15-year-old Mexican American boy living in El Paso who feels perpetually misfit. He doesn’t understand how to relate to other boys his age; he doesn’t understand his father, silent and troubled after years of serving in Vietnam; he doesn’t understand his mother’s silence when it comes to his older brother who is in prison, but who might as well be dead. Then, his world is utterly changed when fellow 15-year-old Dante befriends him. Dante is many things Aristotle is not: in love with the world and his life, passionate about books and art, open about his feelings, affectionate with his parents, and Dante charges through life with a joyous innocence that extends from his love for all living things right down to his unwillingness to wear shoes outside.
I loved every page of this book, from the tough parts to the surprising plot twists to the stunning portraits of both boys’ relationships with each of their parents, to the glorious ending which felt like a rainstorm breaking over the desert Ari loves—a therapeutic release of emotion. First off, the writing and voice is beautiful and spot-on. Ari is our narrator and every word sounds like him. He’s troubled and stubborn, but also quiet and attentive. He has a strong sense of justice, a strong moral compass, and clever and sarcastic sense of humor. We know him, and through his eyes we know deeply the other pivotal figures in his life. Ari’s growth over the course of the novel is seamless, as is the growth of his relationships with the other characters. Let’s start with Dante. Dante is beautiful in Ari’s eyes and therefore in ours. His soul is beautiful. Just like Ari, we long to protect that innocence. A third of the way through the book, one of the significant plot twists is the back-to-back events of Dante announcing that he’ll be leaving El Paso for a year—his family is moving to Chicago for his dad’s one year sabbatical—and a car speeding in the rain nearly killing both Dante and Aristotle. Ari moves instinctively and shoves Dante out of the way. The car crushes his legs. I gasped aloud reading this section. It’s unclear for several pages if Dante has survived and what, exactly, has happened, as we experience these scenes with the full confusion and disorientation that Ari experiences. This is the first event that shifts Ari and Dante’s relationship. Dante is wracked by guilt and Ari tries desperately to move them past this, to equalize their light-hearted friendship once again.
Dante moves to Chicago, writes letters to Ari who only occasionally responds, and then moves back. Everything continues to change. Dante is no longer so innocent, but he is still as pure of heart. In true Dante fashion, he is not afraid of who he is and he tells Ari openly that he’s gay and that he likes boys. Ari, again, tries to hang onto the past, tries to keep their relationship the way it’s always been. Near the end of the book, their relationship changes again after another dramatic twist (although, perhaps both of these should have looked to us as inevitable, as they match the personalities of both characters) that leaves one of our favorite duo severely injured. This time, Dante is hospitalized, after he’s beaten up by a group of boys who see him kissing another boy. Ari goes on an emotionally-driven rampage in response. He confronts the boy who Dante was kissing and learns that Daniel fled while Dante faced up to the bullies (very true to character) and discovers the names of two of the four boys who beat Dante up. Furious, Ari goes to find one of these boys and fights with him, sending him to the hospital in turn. Both these events evidence Ari’s deep need to defend and protect Dante, and both events change Dante himself and the relationship between Ari and Dante.
Both events remove some of Dante’s lightness. He understands in different ways what’s at stake when he’s expressing his identity. He worries over telling his parents that he’s gay and he’s thrilled when his mom is pregnant again, insisting that the child needs to be a boy and he needs to love girls. After Dante is beaten up, the truth about his identity comes out, and his dad is saddened as he asks Ari why his son didn’t tell him, why he didn’t feel he could tell him the truth. While Dante is no longer quite so light-hearted, his strength in his convictions is never shaken. While these events are dramatic, it’s the slow disappointment of his unrequited love for Ari that is perhaps changing Dante the most. Dante tries for a long time to show Ari his love. He talks Ari into things, shares his drawings of Ari, kisses him, and eventually tells him how he feels. But, by the end of the book, we see the way the hopelessness of Dante’s love for Ari is aging him and saddening him. When, in the final scene, Ari starts to tell Dante of his feelings in return, Dante’s instinct is to draw back, to tell Ari that he can’t do this. Dante has been too hurt by the day-to-day pain of loving Ari and believing this love is not returned. Ari, on the other hand, has reached a place of openness in which love has become stronger than the boundaries he has always built around his heart. He has become more like Dante—more willing to wear his heart on his sleeve—and Dante has become more like Ari—more cautious, more aware that the world is not as magical as he believed it to be. Beautifully, these boys meet in the middle, somewhere between their two natures.
Ari’s character development feels like healing. He begins this book in a place of tension, with himself and with his family. It takes him a long time to uncover the truth: the truth of his heart and his feelings and his sexuality, the truth about his brother, the truth about his father, the truth about his mother, the truth about his aunt (who was queer and estranged from her extended family while accepted only by Ari’s immediate family)…As Ari peels back these layers seeking the truth he seems to be liberating himself. Interestingly, the truth about his brother is a truth he always knew he needed. He wanted to know what happened and why his parents didn’t speak of this. The truths he learns about his father and mother seem to be by-products of this central truth, or part of the natural process of growing up and discovering the complexity of one’s parents as people. The truth about himself seems to be the deepest layer, the hardest to uncover, but one that is tied to learning these other truths. I thought it was poignant that his father, always so silent and internal, is the one to tell Ari the truth about his feelings for Dante. That his father, who Ari has always perceived to hold so much inside, is able to bare his soul and tell his Vietnam story (the deep guilt he feels for having left a man behind to die, that this is what haunts him most) and then, in the same conversation, tell his son that he knows his son is in love with his male best friend seemed like the perfect parallel. It is somehow always easier to see the truth in someone else than in yourself. Ari’s mother’s unveiling of her heart is similar, as she tells Ari the truth that is hardest for her to face—the truth about Ari’s brother who was imprisoned for killing with his bare hands a prostitute he picked up who turned out to be a man—and after revealing this, she is there in agreement as Ari’s father reveals the hardest truth for Ari to hear. I loved how she shows her son that his hardest truth doesn’t need to continue to be painful, that he doesn’t need to feel ashamed, that he can heal fully, as she says “Ashamed of what? Of loving Dante?” In asking this question, she shows Ari that shame is so far from the way he should feel about love.
I don’t think I’ve ever read a book with a better characterization of the relationships between children and parents. These parents are incredible people. They are far from perfect, but they try so hard to understand their children and they love them so fiercely. Early in the book, Ari is closer with his mother than his father. His witty banter with his mom, who co-opts Ari calling her a fascist as a way to tease him, shows their similar ways of being in the world. But in nature, Ari is more like his quiet father who holds a whole war inside himself. Ari grows to realize the ways that his reluctance to take the truth out and look at it has echoes in his mother’s nature as well, and that his father might be more light-hearted than he’d assumed (he goes bowling regularly with Mr. Quintana). Dante, on the other hand, feels more early affinity for his father who is also funny and fun-loving and contrasted to his composed mother. Yet, we see how deeply Mrs. Quintana loves (I loved the moment where, after Ari saves Dante’s life in the car accident, Mrs. Quintana tells Ari that she will love him forever, and Ari knows that she means it), and we see how her moral conviction and weight is somehow like her son’s, as he matures into himself. Mrs. Quintana sees everything about Dante in a way his father does not; his father, who more often lives in the moment, is blind-sided to realize his son is gay and never told him. Both of Dantes parents are rejuvenated by Mrs. Quintana’s pregnancy, and they behave like young lovers, as they take Ari’s truck for a spin. Their age difference with Ari’s parents is never closely commented on, but it’s something I thought about as a friendship square is foraged among the parents, and opened to include their sons. By the end of the novel, Ari feels like Dante does: he knows he loves his parents; he’s crazy about them.
I loved how, late in the book, we finally get the first names of Ari’s parents—Lilly and Jaime—when they have become, for him, fully realized beings and when they have, through their bravery in confronting their hardest truths, helped their son to confront his. I bawled through the penultimate scene of this book when Ari’s dad tells him about his time in Vietnam. I felt like Ari’s dad was showing him that the most painful regret was to leave someone behind, that leaving someone behind is what haunts you, and that he doesn’t want his son to leave someone behind…and that someone is himself, a version of his true self that Ari might have chosen to shut out from his life for so long that he would never be able to truly heal. Instead, because of the willingness of Ari’s parents to still grow and change as settled adults, to strive for more openness with their son, they teach Ari openness with himself. Ari is not his brother and they see him for who he is rather than projecting Bernardo onto Ari. Although, when he comes home after having beaten up Julian (Dante’s attacker), his parents show an instinctual fear that he is like his brother—using his hands for violence—and his father reacts punitively (“I’m selling your truck”) like he must have done to his brother, Ari is able to tell the truth of his motivations and his parents are able to slow down and see him. This is such a powerful testament to the ability of parents and children to grow into their relationships with each, a positive growth that requires change in both of them. The healing of Ari’s family, their blossoming closeness, forms the central arc of this novel. Yes, this is a love story. It is a story of Ari coming to terms with his sexuality and accepting his love for Dante. But, more fundamentally, it’s the story of his relationship with his family, because in healing themselves, they heal each other. I adored all of these characters and l didn’t want their stories to end. Ending the novel felt like saying goodbye to friends.
