Fascinated by people in the notes going "its fine because banks are evil" (while true, not the current point of discussion)
Significantly more fascinated by people thinking this is somehow unique to TikTok exclusively and they would neeeeever do anything so stupid.
On tumblr.
The website that famously has several crowdfunding scam icebergs, and a convention that was set up so poorly, we are going to make a convention about that convention.
The easiest way to fall for a scam is to think you are immune to falling for a scam.

A (somehow both very biased and not very opinionated) review of the Met orchestra musicians concert “Song to the Moon” from February 21, 2021:
I had been bothering my Tumblr followers with my excitement over this event yesterday, so it felt only right for me to stop procrastinating and give an attempt for a review of the whole thing; I think this is actually my first time writing a lengthy review ever, and it will probably sound naïve and be an embarrassment for me in the future.
It started around 10 PM where I live. I sat in my bed with my computer while eating chocolate in order to stay awake throughout the whole thing, and trying not to spill any pieces on the sheets, excitedly waiting for this event, having actually bought myself a fifteen-buck ticket about three weeks prior with my parents’ credit card (they didn’t bat an eye when I asked their permission), happily knowing that the money was not going to end up in the pockets of the undeserving Met management.
Given the shitty Lebanese Wi-Fi and the fact that this was a livestream, I had been worried that I might miss significant chunks and get upset over the fact. The stream did glitch a few times for me during the first number (mainly because I had my computer on my constantly-moving knees, before settling it down next to me on the bed), but otherwise it never failed me.
But let’s get on with the review. The livestream began with a title card representing an animation of a lunar eclipse, displaying the title “Song to the Moon”. The concert started with a performance of Antonín Dvořák’s String Quintet No. 2 in G Major, Op. 77 by members of the Met orchestra. (actually, given that this is a Met musicians concert, I feel that they ought to be rightfully credited; Nancy Wu, 1st violin [for this piece], Bruno Eicher, 2nd violin [for this piece], Désirée Elsevier, viola, Kari Jane Docter, cello, and Leigh Mesh, double bass.)
I actually listened to a recording of this piece in preparation a few days prior, just so you guys know. Obviously, there were a few slightly flat notes that were played, but overall this was quite a pleasant rendition, and I still have the theme from the 2nd movement stuck in my head as I’m writing this. What I also liked was that at one point (i.e. when I was actually paying attention in that area) I could actually hear the notes being played by the double bass quite clearly, at least compared to the other recording that I had listened to.
Next on the program, the musicians were joined by soprano Angela Gheorghiu (i.e. my main reason for actually purchasing the ticket), who performed all the way from the Athenaeum of Bucharest, Romania, [1st instance of Raya uselessly gushing] looking ethereal in that shot that was shown of her just walking inside the building wearing that white dress and flowing cape, before the actual performance. Just a warning for you guys here; I love Gheorghiu (actually, it’s a bit of a celebrity “crush”), so please expect a little bit of somewhat controlled gushing here and there (partly physical appearance-wise, which are indicated by the bold, and which I deeply hate myself for). This part of the review is causing me even more anxiety for that reason.
She performed on the stage of a theater that was practically empty besides the pianist. She sang in two languages I do not understand at all, which helped me a bit with not getting too distracted by pronunciation. [2nd instance of Raya uselessly gushing] Before I get into what y’all actually came for, I just wanted to get it out of my system about how she had this appearance that defined “has aged, aged really well”. She had this kind of mature beauty, especially with her makeup, that seemed to give me the overall vibes of a pleasant middle-aged auntie. (well, this was very difficult embarrassing to write) Even her singing voice had this sound that can be described as having this sort of “mature” quality blended with the whole fact of her overall sound being “hers”. I hope I have made myself clear.
Okay, gushing finished for now, let’s move on with the review!
Apparently the footage taken in Bucharest and the one taken in New York were both filmed separately. I found it really mind-blowing how the audio of both got synchronized so perfectly.
The first gem Gheorghiu sang was an arrangement of “Tatăl nostru”; basically an early-19th-century musical setting of the Lord’s Prayer by Anton Pann that is still used to this day in the Romanian Orthodox Church (totally NOT reading off the PDF for the program notes provided on the website). I had obviously never heard this piece before; I had tried to (VERY lazily) look it up a bit, but to no avail. I unfortunately don’t remember much from this performance apart from everything mentioned before, but what I do know is that was rendered really epic thanks to the participation of principal Met percussionist Gregory Zuber alongside the string players.
Next was performed the aria after which the whole concert was named, the incredibly famous “Měsíčku na nebi hlubokém” (aka “Song to the Moon”) by Dvořák again, from the opera Rusalka. This version was actually arranged by the violist Elsevier, who is among the musicians who retired from the Met during the pandemic. And it was indeed a beautiful arrangement! Now, unlike “Tatăl nostru”, which I virtually knew nothing about, I love this aria and know it quite well, so I did pay attention to some of the pronunciation; but then again, I do not speak Czech, so it didn’t matter much. Overall, Gheorghiu’s rendition was not perfect (I thinnnnnnnnk there were some notes that were a little bit out of tune? but there was vibrato that also touched the right tone and so I couldn’t tell), and I would certainly not imagine it within the full context of Rusalka the opera (see what I noted above concerning the quality of her voice), but that did not stop me from finding it quite beautiful.
It felt so weird not to hear any applause after each number, and so I could not help but clap after each gem, even though no one could hear me.
After the concert wrapped up, the audience got to watch a chat session between Gheorghiu and Met horn player Barbara Jöstlein Currie, where they talked about how this whole thing came to be (so apparently there was Instagram DM’ing between the two that was involved in the preparation?), before the five string players (which actually include two married couples!) whose music we heard earlier joined in. So unlike the concert, which was all pre-recorded, this was a Zoom session being streamed live. [3rd instance of Raya uselessly gushing] Gheorghiu’s speaking voice sounds radically different from her singing voice, and I can tell English is not her primary language, but that’s just something useless I wanted to include, on which I have zero strong feelings. In contrast to the pre-recorded concert, here she was responsible for me writing in The Balcony Seats Discord server earlier today about how “you know you have aged well when you end up looking a bit like Morticia Addams”, especially with the makeup. [gushing done]
The whole discussion hinged on the concept of “Met family”, and I found the whole interaction between Gheorghiu and the musicians just very very sweet, a star singer and musicians in the pit seeing each other as equals, as family. It’s not every day that I see that (but then again, my background is severely limited, so what do I know). Among the relatively unimportant things the convo touched on that stick with me, in no particular order, are:
Gheorghiu apparently married on the stage of the Met because the guy from the City Hall lost their papers and I never knew that??? (but then again, I never directly research info about my hyperfixations because I get overwhelmed) Everyone had a nice laugh at that recollection.
She got into this whole profession mainly to sing at the Met. Also the whole deal of her making L*vine cry and making her debut at a young age for a star singer.
Everyone relating to the feeling of going home at night after a concert, and not being able to go to sleep because you still have adrenaline flowing through you. As someone who does performing arts, I also relate to that on a moderate degree.
Family life talks.
Gheorghiu mentioning how she can’t work with a director who’s like “your character does that because that’s what I decided” because something something harmony? I can’t remember; I’m pretty sure I’m misquoting. But that’s basically the equivalent of “my house, my rules” (”my production, my interpretation” in that case, lol) imo, so can’t object too much.
Something about playing the finale of Götterdämmerung led the musicians to humorously throw in the idea of Gheorghiu singing Brünnhilde as her next role, and she went all “nah” to that, also humorously.
This led to her admitting that she’s not the biggest fan of Wagner’s music (though she would consider singing Elsa); saying that she’d travel back in time to tell Wager to stop writing these interminable phrases, to just get to the point (I’m not really into Wagner either, so I don’t completely disagree). Also, she believes that Wagner is difficult to sing, and that singers who nail Wagner tend to end up singing only Wagner (here, I think it depends, but there is a point somewhere in here).
She doesn’t seem to like singing acapella/without music very much, which also led her to record some sAcRiLEgiOuS versions of Orthodox worship songs, which you’re apparently not supposed to sing with music.
She sang something like “goodnight, goodnight” (idk) at the very end, it was cute.
To go back to the important stuff, Gheorghiu apparently wrote directly to the Met donors, asking to help in any way, because she wanted to set an example for other people by doing the right thing, and to help what she sees as her “family”, as mentioned above. I had heard some stories about her diva reputation (and she does seem to enjoy attention and stuff, from what I’ve seen myself), but overall she seems like a pretty good person. Mainly mentioning that because as y’all know I’m autistic and can’t tell intricate body language and stuff, plus my very strong belief that good person >>>>>>> great performer. (but my dear friends say that loving her is valid, so I guess I’m safe from too much disappointment. what am I even writing).
And that’s it for my incredibly long and uselessly detailed and almost incoherent and somewhat gushy review, which took me nearly 3 hours to write (and for which I may or may not have replayed a little bit of the stream just to get one bit of info right), and which will, again, probably embarrass me for the rest of my puny life, but which I could not not let out into the void of operablr.
(There were also moments earlier today where I was fantasizing about being interviewed on that very Zoom meeting for the scene-and-duet I composed back in January in response to the Met’s poor treatment of its musicians)
I guess what I can take from this post is: never write a review again, Raya!
#sorry everyone!!!#raya writes a review#concert review#opera concert review#angela gheorghiu#(whom i have excessively gushed over)#(but seriously you should count the number of times i have written 'gheorghiu' in this one post!)#(i haven't bc it's late)#met orchestra musicians#song to the moon#song to the moon concert#dealing with part of a current hyperfixation

Hero Chat: Lila
This is just something for me to write out my thoughts on how to handle the Lila plot in the Hero Chat fic. And in general, but mostly this. Because I discussed using the ‘Lila has some kind of Magic’ plot for why everyone believes her.
I want to discuss both the ‘Magic’ plot and the ‘everyone kinda fucked up a little’ plot. Because both are things I want to talk out.
This isn’t necessarily salt, but it does involve Lila and the class believing her lies and a little of Adrien’s ‘don’t do anything’ plan. So you know.
Let’s start with the Magic plot.
I’m calling the Magic ‘Silver Tongue’, because of course. It was a kind of Magic created by someone who used the Fox Miraculous for selfish gain in the past. They used the Fox’s Illusions to trick their way into fame, money, and power.
Eventually, they created a more subtle version of the Magic. Illusion in just words. Silver Tongue is just words that are believed as much as the Fox’s Illusions. They are also just as real as the Fox’s Illusions, believable, but destroyed if you try to touch them.
What I mean is that as long as the Silver Tongue’s lie is not given proof that it’s a lie, they will believe it. But they won’t believe something they know is false. For example, Alya believes Lila when she says ‘oh, I’m bffs with Ladybug’. But if Lila said ‘I’m Rena Rouge’, Alya would be able to tell it’s a lie.
Which, yes, brings us to Lila. In an ironic twist, she was right about being descended from someone who used the Fox Miraculous, just not a Hero. She actually had no idea and was making it up but hey. Everyone gets lucky sometimes.
The thing that makes a Silver Tongue lose their power, is the realization that they’re lying. Once you know that their words are lies, you won’t be enchanted by further lies. This is why Marinette and Adrien aren’t effected by Lila.
Marinette knew Lila was lying due to her saying ‘I’m bffs with Ladybug’. She knows for a fact that it’s false. Between this and the fact that she knows other lies are false, such as Jagged Stone having a cat or Lila being traveling for months, she isn’t enchanted by Silver Tongue.
Adrien was suckered in at first. But Ladybug showing up and calling Lila out on her shit broke the spell. It would’ve been broken anyway if Lila kept talking about having the Fox Miraculous, as she would’ve made up stuff about it that Adrien would know is false. For example, he could ask her to transform and she’d make up a reason why that doesn’t fit with what he knows. And she’d say nothing about a Kwami. So he would’ve figured it out without Ladybug’s help.
However, while there is Magic making the class believe Lila’s stories, she doesn’t control their reactions to it. Sending Marinette to the back without asking, dismissing her as jealous, and ignoring how uncomfortable Adrien is around Lila? That’s all on them.
There is also nothing stopping them from doing their own investigation, other than the fact that they feel like they don’t need to because ‘Lila is obviously telling the truth’.
When the classmates realize they’d been tricked, they will still feel guilty and apologize, recognizing that they fucked up even if Magic was involved.
-
Now for the non-magical version!
There’s a lot of factors of why Lila’s lies work. Some of it is because she’s good at manipulating the situation, and making up other lies when she’s called out.
Next, there’s the fact that Lila knowing celebrities isn’t that far of a stretch given the classmates.
Chloé and Adrien are actually rich and famous, but are in this one random public school class.
Marinette has gotten the attention of several celebrities and big names in the fashion industry.
Rose knows Prince Ali. And while we don’t really know how often they talk, a lot of people assume they talk a lot.
Then there’s Kitty Section. The band has gotten a lot of attention in the short time they’ve been playing.
Alya runs the Ladyblog, Number 1 source of Ladybug news.
Not to mention the Heroes. Everyone knows about Chloé being Queen Bee. From Alya and Nino’s perspectives, there’s three heroes in class. Other classmates who have been Heroes think there’s themselves and Chloé, making two.
So yeah, Lila, daughter of someone from the Italian Embassy who travels a lot, says she knows some celebrities. That’s kinda believable when compared to the rest of the classmates’ fame.
But there’s also the fact that multiple people expect other people to fact check or say something. For example:
When Alya makes a post on the Ladyblog about Lila being ‘Ladybug’s bff’, Ladybug doesn’t challenge that. Ladybug knows about the Ladyblog and knows how to find Alya. From Alya’s perspective, if it wasn’t true, Ladybug herself would have said something.
Not to victim blame, but Marinette really should’ve done that. If only to keep Lila and her family from being targeted by Hawkmoth.
Rose talks to Prince Ali. She could’ve asked him about Lila. Everyone probably assumes she did. Since she didn’t call Lila out either, he probably told her she’s on the up and up.
I do headcanon that Rose mentioned Lila to Prince Ali, but she didn’t do major digging. It was probably like: Rose: “Hey! I made a new friend! Lila Rossi!”, Ali: “I’m glad you’re making new friends! Would you like to hear about this cool thing that happened earlier?”. It’s the kind of situation where she didn’t ask directly, and since Ali didn’t go ‘who?’, she assumed that it was fine.
Lila’s ‘disabilities’.
From the Class’s perspective, it’s not on them to ask for documentation. It’s on the staff. If the staff members believe Lila has tinnitus and whatever else, then they have the documentation necessary to confirm it.
As for the staff believing it, that’s probably Lila forging doctor’s notes and hijacking her mom’s email. Or giving a fake email on the paperwork.
Lila being out of Paris for months
Like the disabilities, the class doesn’t need to confirm it as the school staff have done that. After all, Lila couldn’t just be skipping class for several months without consequences! The school would’ve contacted her mother, and her mother would’ve done something about it!
Obviously Lila also used the email thing from the disabilities section to fake an email from her mom saying ‘we’ve been traveling lately. Can you email Lila any classwork she needs?’.
As for her mom, we know she’s lying to her about the whole Akuma situation. Saying the school is closed because of all that fuckery.
So yeah, between decent lies, people assuming things are cool because they’re naive kids who like to see the best in people, and a few screwups, it’s easy to believe Lila’s claims.
And once she has a hold on the class, getting them to believe her, she can turn things around on those who try to call her out. Marinette tries to say something? Lila pulls out the ‘I’m being so nice! Why do you hate me!’. And since, from the class’s perspective, there’s no reason for Marinette to be mean other than jealousy over Adrien, they assume that’s the problem.
If Adrien had spoken up, Lila would’ve found a way to turn it around. Maybe she spins it as ‘Marinette’s obviously been telling you horrible things about me!’ or ‘Now he’s making stuff up to protect Marinette!’ . It depends on how dedicated she is to thinking she can win Adrien over.
So yeah it’s not that they’re entirely falling for a bunch of lies without proof. There’s enough plausible to Lila’s lies that they don’t feel the need to search further. Of course if they looked into it they’d find the truth, but for now they’re sitting back.
And of course when they do realize what happened, they apologize to Marinette and Adrien.
-
Side note: Adrien’s view of ‘why does it matter, she’s not hurting anyone?’.
First of all, Adrien wasn’t there for all of Lila’s bullshit. He does know she was lying to impress him and the classmates. He might be skeptical about the tinnitus claim, but can’t really prove that she doesn’t have tinnitus(obviously he knows the ‘how’ is fake, but she could hypothetically have it from something else). And it wasn’t Lila who made Marinette sit in the back, just the classmates assuming she’d be chill.
Adrien didn’t see the scene in the cafeteria where Marinette tried to call Lila out and everyone turned against her. He didn’t see the bathroom scene of Lila threatening her. And no one told him about it.
So, again, from Adrien’s perspective, Lila is just telling grand stories to try and impress everyone. Which doesn’t really hurt anyone. Maybe it will in the long run, if people keep believing her and base all their decisions on what she says instead of thinking for themselves. But that’s a bit unlikely. Also he’s still a teenager and they’re not the best at thinking long-term.
Adrien’s experience with liars is also more limited. He would mostly deal with paparazzi and tabloid reporters that make up gossip for clickbait views. People who saw him hanging with Marinette in ‘Gorizilla’ and tweeted out that she was his secret girlfriend. There’s a line I keep wanting to put into a fic somewhere of Adrien saying ‘If my father stopped what he was doing to disprove every rumor about him having an affair with a model or intern half his age, he wouldn’t be able to get any work done at all.’.
From Adrien’s perspective, it’s not worth it to call Lila out like Marinette was doing. All it’ll do is enrage the class and push them further into Lila’s side. They would be alone. They’d have each other, but no one else.
As shown in later episodes, like ‘Oni-Chan’ and especially ‘Ladybug’, Adrien does come to realize Lila is less of a ‘hey pay attention to me’ liar and more of a ‘I’ll manipulate the fuck out of everyone and destroy anyone who tries to stop me’ liar. And he decides to do something about it. Even if he can’t prove Lila lied, he can ‘make a deal with the devil’ and get her to fix things.
Okay, that’s it now. Goodnight everybody.

CW: this post is about oppression, and contains some specific examples of problematic things people say. No, like, graphic depictions of violence or sexual assault, but it’s possible that there’s something I should specifically mention but don’t think to. Mentions of terf ideology, ableism, sexism, Christian centrism, ace exclusionism, general microaggressions.
I want to address the idea that talking about less recognized forms of oppression (or maybe just suffering...but...eh, I’m going to assume oppression here and justify use of the term in another post, maybe) is connected to denying one’s privilege. I would like to argue that, while those can go together, they are intrinsically separate things.
1. Claiming oppresion one doesn’t actually have while denying privilege (what people tend to confuse talking about less recognized forms of oppression for): “Actually I’m not white, I’m one-sixteenth Cherokee...” “war on Christmas” “reverse racism” “straight pride” “this diversity stuff has gone too far”
2. Talking about forms of oppression (in particular less recognized forms of oppression) that one has while denying privilege one also has (“less recognized” of course depends on context): talking about “gifted kid” issues without talking about (or actively minimizing) other exceptionalities/neurodiversity, talking about having Aspergers while distancing oneself from people with more life-impairing expressions of autism, talking about more “acceptable” forms of mental illness while promoting harmful stereotypes about other mental illnesses, “drop the t” and ace exclusionism, making comparisons with more widely understood forms of oppression that implies we’ve “gotten over” those forms of oppression, such as “no one would ever use the n-word like that.”
3. Talking about less recognized forms of oppression and also acknowledging privilege: amplifying and centering voices of people with multiple marginalization, centering race and poverty in discussions about ableism, naming one’s privileges and acknowledging the limitations in perspectives arising from them, being cautions about othering “us” and “them” language, forming coalitions and advocating for justice for groups of people that you personally aren’t a part of.
(You’ll notice most of these don’t literally take the form of talking about one’s own privilege. Privilege can and should be acknowledged by things like amplifying other people’s voices and knowing when to stay in your lane, not just by “so I’m white...” etc.) (I think a lot of people don’t get this? Maybe this needs a separate post.)
4. Not talking about less understood forms of oppression while acknowledging privilege — or talking about forms of oppression that apply to other people and not talking about oppression as something that applies to you (I’m not saying this is bad, just that it happens! People aren’t necessarily comfortable talking about ways in which they personally are oppressed in personal terms! Often when people speak about ways in which they’re oppressed when it’s not immediately obvious, they’re pushing back against a lot of resistance not to): participating in a workshop on poverty without talking about one’s own current or past money struggles, talking about lgbtq+ rights in terms of “them” when the speaker is actually a member of the community, a white-passing POC letting other people assume they’re white in discussions of race, people with autism talking about autism without disclosing that they’re autistic. Likewise, talking about oppression of groups one isn’t a part of (or amplifying others’ voices) without making connections to ways in which you personally experience oppression, even when it might be appropriate to do so.
5. Not acknowledging one’s own oppression and also denying one’s own privilege: common as fuck actually. Complaining about “special snowflakes”. Complaining about PC language. Women loudly talking about how they don’t need feminism. “I pulled myself up by my bootstraps” narratives (usually both denying things like white and male privilege and minimizing/justifying classism at the same time.) Closeted queer people who publicly condemn being gay, trans, etc. Disabled people who support “overcoming disability” and “inspiration” narratives.
Get the picture? While people sometimes do both play up their own oppression, including forms of oppression that many people don’t recognize as such, while at the same time minimizing other people’s oppresion, these things have nothing to do with each other. Because unfortunately, minimizing or denying any given form of oppression is the cultural default! People have to unlearn a whole lot of things to be counter-oppressive on even one axis, let along multiple axes.
So if you think someone’s just making up a form of oppression that doesn’t exist, you might be right...but if you’re wrong you could be doing a lot of harm. If they’re minimizing or denying another form of oppression in the process, that is the issue, not whether something you don’t really understand is also a form of oppression or not.
And I mean: making up oppressions that don’t exist is a thing that happens and can cause harm (eg when Christians insist that doing their job is a violation of their freedom of religion when doing their job involves not being an asshole to same sex couples, or when Christians insist that it’s imperative that they be able to spend Christmas with their families during a pandemic while not making concessions for other faiths’ holidays) but in all cases it’s possible to point to someone who is directly being harmed. So, if you can’t see who’s being harmed, maybe be open to the possibility that you’re wrong.
(Or, rather, who I’m really writing this for: if you’re concerned because someone might not believe you if you speak openly about your oppression as you experience it, or someone’s actually giving you a hard time. That’s on them. You’re OK. They’re wrong.)
I keep coming back to how terfs justify (I would love to be able to honestly and accurately write this statement in the past tense) their transmisogyny by using the idea that women are oppressed, but being trans isn’t a real thing, let alone a thing people experience oppression over. Claiming that people are making up a form of oppression that doesn’t really exist can do tremendous amounts of harm. And everybody thinks their beliefs are correct. That’s what belief means. So going “yeah, but terfs are wrong” doesn’t fix things, because they don’t think they’re wrong and because you could be wrong about things that you’re sure you’re right about.

Against empathy Liveblog 18
“Batson and his colleagues put subjects in a situation where they have the opportunity to do something nice—such as donating money, taking over an unpleasant task from someone else, or cooperating with someone at a cost. Some of the subjects are told nothing or are told to take an objective point of view. But others are encouraged to feel empathy—they might be told: “Try to take the other person’s perspective” or “Put yourself in that person’s shoes.”
Over and over again, Batson finds that these empathy prompts make subjects more likely to do good—to give money, take over a task, and cooperate. Empathy makes them kind.
Batson finds these effects even when helping is anonymous, when there is a justification for not helping, and when it’s easy to say no. He concludes from his work that these effects cannot be explained by a desire to enhance one’s reputation or a wish to avoid embarrassment or anything like that. Rather, empathy elicits a genuine desire to make another person’s life better.”
I’m VERY interested in how this is so bad you recommend people stop.
“Even among psychologists who should know better, images derived from PET or fMRI scans are seen as reflecting something more scientific—more real—than anything else a psychologist could discover. There is a particular obsession with localization, as if knowing where something is in the brain is the key to explaining it.”
Bruh.
Bruh.
Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence, and you’re making very strong versions of your claims. Please acknowledge that.
“If you’re one of those people who doesn’t believe something is real unless you see it in the brain, you’ll be relieved to hear that empathy actually does exist. It really does light up the brain. Actually, at first blush, empathy looks as if it’s everywhere in the brain. One scholar describes at length what he calls “an empathy circuit in the brain,” but this “circuit” contains ten major brain areas, some of them big chunks of brain stuff, larger than a baby’s finger, like the medial prefrontal cortex, the anterior insula, and the amygdala—all of which are also engaged in actions and experiences that have nothing to do with empathy.”
Interesting. Yay data!
“It turns out, though, that this the-whole-brain-does-it conclusion arises because neuroscientists—along with psychologists and philosophers—are often sloppy in their use of the term empathy. Some investigators look at what I see as empathy proper—what happens in the brain when someone feels the same thing they believe another person is feeling. Others look at what happens when we try to understand other people, usually called “social cognition” or “theory of mind” but sometimes called “cognitive empathy.” Others look at quite specific instantiations of empathy (such as what happens when you watch someone’s face contort in disgust), and still others study what goes on in the brain when a person decides to do something nice for another person, which is sometimes called “prosocial concern” but which one normally thinks of as niceness or kindness. Once you start pulling these different phenomena apart, which I’ll do below, things get more interesting, and you see how these different capacities relate to one another.”
Fair—I can see how people might looks at a whole brain going FWEEEEEE and assume the thing is super important, only to miss that they’ve over defined the thing.
Still not sure you haven’t under defined it, let’s see what you have to say
“The first finding is that an empathic response to someone else’s experience can involve the same brain tissue that’s active when you yourself have that experience. So “I feel your pain” isn’t just a gooey metaphor; it can be made neurologically literal: Other people’s pain really does activate the same brain area as your own pain, and more generally, there is neural evidence for a correspondence between self and other.”
For the people who think “how can you feel MY pain? Is that magic, NTs? Lolol.” What we mean!
“As you might be able to tell from the title of his book, Hickok is critical of the claims that have been made about mirror neurons, and many scholars would agree that they have been overhyped. One strong objection to the view that they explain capacities such as morality, empathy, and language is that most of the findings about mirror neurons come from macaque monkeys—and monkeys don’t have much morality, empathy, or language. Mirror neurons cannot be sufficient for these capacities, then—though they might help out with them. Nevertheless, the more general finding of shared representations—the discovery that there exist neural systems that treat the experiences and actions of others the same way they treat the experiences and actions of the self—really is an important discovery about mental life.”
Caveat.
“You can see this overlap between self and other as a clever evolutionary trick. To thrive as a social being, one has to make sense of the internal lives of other individuals, to accurately guess what other people are thinking, wanting, and feeling. Since we’re not telepathic, we have to infer this from information we get from our senses.”
Ding ding! It’s a perceptual apparatus, like eyes or ears. It’s not wizardry.
Now... while I concede there are times when covering my ears or eyes make it MORE easy for me to perceive something important. It doesn’t follow that I should pluck out my eyes or eardrums.
Yet in a previous chapter you said “if you’re considering what to do and trying to feel someone’s pain, you should stop.” Implying T the very least that I should have my eye mask at hand at all times.
Seems odd. I get that disabilities aren’t death sentences but this is parsing like “blind yourself so you can truly hear.” Nah?’
“But there’s an alternative. We can take advantage of the fact that we have minds ourselves, and we can use our own minds as a laboratory to bring ourselves up to speed on how others will behave and think.”
Porquenolosdos.gif
“We can do the same for subjective experiences. Which would hurt a stranger more: stubbing her toe or slamming her hand in a car door? You could try to figure this out from scratch, like a scientist looking at the biological workings of a novel species, but a better way is to assess memories of your own pain (or just to imagine yourself in those situations) and assume that the other person will feel the same way you do.”
Which is why I say ditch the eye mask and remember you’re capable of both.
“Our occasional success at understanding individuals who are different from ourselves shows that simulation can’t be the whole story in understanding other people. Hickok points out that we can often successfully read the minds of dogs and cats, figure out what they mean when they bark or purr, wag their tails, put their tails up high, and so on, but surely we’re not simulating them. Those who are quadriplegic from birth can have a rich understanding of other people, figuring out their mental states based on their movement—she has loudly slammed the door, she must be angry—even though these quadriplegics are not in any sense simulating the actions.”
Is anyone arguing against this?
“And, of course, there has to be a brain difference between self and other because there is a psychological difference. Watching someone getting slapped in the face doesn’t really make your cheek burn, and watching someone get a back rub doesn’t make your aches go away. We may feel the pain of someone else, in a limited sense, but in another sense we really don’t. Relative to real experience, empathic resonance is pallid and weak.”
But thinking about it in a detached way isn’t? How do you know?
“Our empathic experience is influenced by what we think about the person we are empathizing with and how we judge the situation that person is in.
It turns out, for instance, that you feel more empathy for someone who treats you fairly than for someone who has cheated you. And you feel more empathy for someone who is cooperating with you than for someone you are in competition with.”
Fair. But that’s why I said don’t rely on empathy alone, except maybe when you need to make a very quick decision or when interacting with people you know.
“People said that they felt less empathy for the person who became infected through drug use—and their neural activation told the same story: When they viewed this individual, they had less activation in brain areas associated with pain, such as, again, the anterior cingulate cortex. And the more subjects explicitly blamed the drug users for their fate, the less empathy they said they had and the less brain activation there was.”
Does rational compassion suffer from a similar problem? (Still not sure what it is exactly.) That is, are we sure this goes away when we appeal to something other than empathy?
Do professed rational actors, for example, reason that addicts deserve less help because they put themselves at risk doing something they don’t have to do, like someone getting a transfusion has to?
“Empathy is also influenced by the group to which the other individual belongs—whether the person you are looking at or thinking about is one of Us or one of Them.”
Fair, which is what o was trying to say with the stories help post—stories help us make Them into Us. Real stories are better but imagined can work, which is why I was okay with them too, anon.
“Subjects found these pictures to be disgusting and showed correspondingly reduced activity in the medial prefrontal cortex, a chunk of the brain involved in social reasoning. Although this study didn’t directly look at empathy, the findings do suggest that we shut off our social understanding when dealing with certain people: We dehumanize them.”
Fair.
But I still want to see whether this changes when you see pictures of people you find disgusting stubbing their toe or having a birthday party. Do you savor their pain and feel disgusted by their pleasure, or do you relate to them in spite of yourself? Does it vary? When?
“I’ve been using the term empathy in the sense of Adam Smith’s sympathy—feeling what another feels. But one can ask how this sharing of feelings relates to the ability to understand people’s psychological states. I’ve repeatedly pointed out that we sometimes call this empathy as well—“cognitive empathy”—and one might wonder whether they are one and the same.
If they were, it would call into question my argument against empathy. You can’t make it through life without some capacity to understand the minds of others. So if feeling the pain of others arises from the same neural system that underlies everyday social understanding—if you can’t have one without the other—then giving up on emotional empathy would be giving up too much.”
Fair
“One system involves sharing the experience of others, what we’ve called empathy; the other involves inferences about the mental states of others—mentalizing or mind reading. While they can both be active at once, and often are, they occupy different parts of the brain. For instance, the medial prefrontal cortex, just behind the forehead, is involved in mentalizing, while the anterior cingulate cortex, sitting right behind that, is involved in empathy.”
Do they tend to go on at the same time, or different times? Can doing one cause doing the other?
“One recent scientific article struggles with the question of whether these troubling individuals are high in empathy or low in empathy. For the authors, the evidence suggests both: “Psychopathic criminals can be charming and attuned while seducing a victim, thereby suggesting empathy, and later callous while raping a victim, thereby suggesting impaired empathy.” So which is it?
The authors try to resolve this apparent paradox in terms of a distinction between ability (one’s capacity to deploy empathy) and propensity (one’s willingness to do so). They suggest that these criminal psychopaths have normal empathic ability but adjust it like the dial of a radio—turn it up when you want to listen to the lyrics, turn it down if you want to focus on passing a slow truck on the I-95.”
That’s what I’d heard, maybe from the same article?
No... maybe not. The one I read said empathy by default is “on” in neurotypical people and has to be “turned off” by fatigue or encouraging callousness, but “off” by default in psychopaths. So if you want them to care how their actions hurt others, you have to call attention to it and “flip the switch.”
“So criminal psychopaths don’t have to be fiddling with a single dial of empathy: A simpler explanation is that they are good at understanding other people and bad at feeling their pain. They have high cognitive empathy but low emotional empathy.”
Fair. But that makes it sound like affective empathy is good? And something that people should use, and might be bad if they dont?
So far anyway.
“None of this is to deny that understanding and feeling are related. Smell, vision, and taste are separate, but they come together in the appreciation of a meal, and it might be that the act of adopting someone’s perspective in a cold-blooded way makes you more likely to vicariously experience what they are feeling and vice versa. But these are nonetheless different processes, and this is important to keep in mind when we think about the pros and cons of empathy.”
Hey! I might be right!!
“Why would empathy make us nicer? The obvious answer—the one that comes to mind immediately for many people—is that empathy allows our selfish motivations to extend to others. The clearest case of this is when someone else’s pain is experienced as your own pain. The idea is that you will help because this will make your own pain go away.”
Yep. And you soothe yourself AND somebody else! It’s win-win!
“It’s not clear, though, that selfishness can explain the good acts that empathy leads to. When empathy makes us feel pain, the reaction is often a desire to escape.”
That’s what I think we need reason for, but I don’t see why we should throw affective empathy out.
“People often cross the street to avoid encountering suffering people who are begging for money. It’s not that they don’t care (if they didn’t care, they would just walk by), it’s that they are bothered by the suffering and would rather not encounter it.”
Fair. I do this. But is that the whole story? For some it surely is. For me, I’m sure it’s part of the story, but part of it is that i feel that what I do in my job is more likely to substantially help homeless people more than giving money. I think I’d feel more guilt about letting my anxiousness around contagion and dirt make me move if I didn’t have another way to help that triggers my disgust less.
“I favor Batson’s own analysis that empathy’s power lies in its capacity to make the experience of others observable and salient, therefore harder to ignore. If I love my baby, and she’s in anguish, empathy with her pain will make me pick her up and try to make her pain go away. This is not because doing so makes me feel better—it does, but if I just wanted my vicarious suffering to go away, I’d leave the crying baby and go for a walk. Rather, my empathy lets me know that someone I love is suffering, and since I love her, I’ll try to make her feel better.”
Seeems fair.
“It’s not that empathy itself automatically leads to kindness. Rather, empathy has to connect to kindness that already exists. Empathy makes good people better, then, because kind people don’t like suffering, and empathy makes this suffering salient.”
Then what makes people kind?

futures market
(ed. note: stephen died while writing this, may his sinful heart now rest in peace)
I think that every work implies an audience, i think that projected audience will be perpetually dreamlike and strange since it's drawn not from human consciousness but from a form of same which has been distorted through embodiment in alien material. Refracted by some "medium" and then existing as a transferable, reproducible object and living an object life separable from the human circumstances by which it was produced. And I think that when we evaluate a work part of what we evaluate is this audience and the prospect of belonging to it, the possibility of a community with those assumptions and those values. The saying "give people what they want" always confuses me in this context because surely part of what they want is the possibility of wanting something else, of being a person who wants something else. Advertisements famously sell not just a product but also the prospect of being the kind of person who likes that product. Even the most conservative works pull a bait and switch in this regards in that part of what they suggest is the prospect of being a person who already knows what they want, of having character and qualities that persist in time rather than being a shapeless blob of experiences.
Avant-garde work could be said to be that which prioritises the formation of new audiences, or the possibility of forming new audiences, above any actual qualities which those audiences would have. It draws on the utopian aspect of creating new social structures, new communities, where whatever form they ultimately end up taking the fact that they can be made at all is in some way a celebration of agency and the possibility of new futures. But the other side of things is that even as the appeal of these imaginary communities comes partly from their distance from our real ones, they're also evaluated on the basis of their feasibility - their power comes not just from a list of bloodless alternities but from possessing a transformative quality, the real possibility of enactment which is used to make demands on the contemporary. Not just a future but one already germinating in the present. And though I like and respect a lot of these works it's also hard, for this reason, not to feel a little uneasy about them - because the imagery of an imminent, transfigurative break from the present has been so co-opted as a way to conceal the fundamental limitations and eerie inertia of capitalism that I think it's hard for anything drawing on that tradition to escape lending credibility to it, even when its interests are directly opposed. 20+ years of an increasingly threadbare neoliberal consensus in the face of problems which grow more and more obvious mean the notion of an unexpected, miraculous shift in the causal order grows more and more central, from the vague sense that someone will invent, like, a moss or something which will stop global warming in the nick of time to the idea that the same clumsy, stupid videogames we've been bonking against invisible walls in for decades now will any minute now transmogrify into the effortless freefloating virtual lucid dreams of legend. And in fact videogames provide a constant running example of just how profitably this perception can be managed - - from a medium which from inception built upon a certain futuristic quality coming both from the historically new level of consumer access to computer technology and from decades of science-fiction representations of same, and which leveraged that into a perennial suggestion that the bright new day was always just around the corner - that by playing videogames now you were securing a kind of early-investor bragging rights to the media singularity to come. If there's anything historically new about videogames it's the extent to which the very suggestion of potential developments to be had later on was finally recognised as more profitable than any intrinsic qualities of the form itself.
And I think all this raises some problems when we think about avant-garde and experimental videogames, not just because in replicating some of the assumptions of the industry they risk being assimilated by it - you can't game-design your way out of late capitalism, there are no final aesthetic solutions to economic problems etc - but because by repeating those assumptions they risk being judged by the standard of contribution to this same monolithic vidcon future, and then discarded accordingly when "the future" changes according to stockholder diktats. I mean that when you see these works as yet more expressions of "the medium" it's harder for them to survive when that status is taken away again, and that at this point it's difficult to conceive of a future of videogames that doesn't in some way just flow back into the orthodox one still being sold.
Why does this matter. I think the videogame market will crash again because that's what markets do, and when it does I believe it'll be blamed on small engines, on unity and rpgmaker, on asset-flipping and joke simulators and walking games and political games rather than e.g. the incessant boom-bust cycles of capitalism or the fact that the particular interactive media singularity that videogames have invested so much image, money and energy into identifying themselves with looks more and more dated and less likely to happen. I think there'll be more gamergate bullshit from people who invested in the stupid, stupid videogame dream and got told by youtube millionaires that it was being undermined from within by sjw fifth columnists making pug dating games. I think that just as places like YouTube have shown a willingness to quietly cut down on who's able to make money through their service places like Steam will do the same thing, particularly after already raising the prospect of exponentially increasing the cost of using the store for small developers already. I think middlebrow columnists at the Atlantic will cash checks saying well, a lot of those games weren't pushing the medium forward anyway, and that the whole thing will end up being recast as a morality tale about an overcrowded, overdiverse market, and that a lot of valuable work people are doing now will be just wiped from the record in the same way as a lot of pre-2007 indie games were, or flash games, or interactive CD-ROMs, or whatever the fuck.
I think that when this happens experimental games or avant garde games or alternative games will be seen less as possible alternatives to the mainstream tradition than as offshoots of it which got pruned, and I'm not sure how much help they will really be to anyone trying to figure out ways to make these things without getting pulled into the endless churning blood rotor of existing videogame culture.
I've written before that the game scenes which interest and excite me most are things like FNAF fangames, Undertale fangames, Unity horror games, RPG Maker games, hyperspecific utility pieces like the Prosperity Path orbs, less for any particular aesthetic or design qualities than for them being videogames which manage to escape some of the awful binary of Producer/Consumer and the ideas of "importance" which evolve later to help justify that perverse dynamic. Like what does it mean to experience a game if it's just part of a big stack of almost interchangeable things and anyway you're only absently going through it when searching for more stuff to steal for your own interchangeable thing. Which is healthier and more interesting than "art". But I think part of it too is the sense of having a specific audience to bounce against, even if it's just of people looking to take your Secret Of Mana midis, and the way that the concreteness of that audience helps defuse the kind of creeping tendency towards cultural speculation that comes with the belief in a big medium-wide payout somewhere down the line that'd justify the time and energies of everyone involved. I don't think it's enough to say people should make an effort to criticise games for what they are as opposed to what they might be, or whatever, insofar as that's even possible. I think being able to appreciate what they are is dependent on recognizing that they have an audience which is similarly settled, similarly "just there". And I think working towards constructing that kind of space would mean, yes, a sort of concession of "the future" to the stockholders of industry, renouncing the right to eventually reap that dread crop. But in the process being able to better engage with the present and all the disparite forces and strands within it who have similarly been lopped off that grand narrative, or were never part of it to begin with, and navigate all the ambiguities and potentials of that space. I think the future of videogames is the same kind of desperate, self-willed dream as those years worth of Twitter shares, for a company which has never actually been profitable, or the horrible locked-down image of infinity that sees new Rocket Racoon movies coming out every year til 2099, I think those dreams are ones that emerge and grow stronger as the actual basis for them either materially or affectively grows ever more decrepit, I think however overwhelming they get they can only really be strangled in the present.
As they say... no futur-what! what are you doing in my house! no-aieee!! (manuscript abruptly cuts off)

Re: My Choice of Sources for News Links
I’m not posting the anonymous ask I just got as it is a nonsense libelous conspiracy theory.
I mention it because of my sincere bafflement as to why someone reading my journal, in which I hardly ever use the Wall street journal for anything as I don’t read it, it’s not a preferred source for a variety of reasons, and is hardly ever relevant to my interests, would bother writing in a long attack on them to me based on what looks like stuff they or someone else in the Conspiracy Theory Swamps made up. It seemed addressed to me as if I liked them and was in some way a partizan. O.o
Like, I wish they hadn’t been anonymous so that I could directly ask them what they were thinking and why they chose to target me with them. I am pretty sure I liked to the WSJ at some point in the past because I literally couldn’t find whatever it was somewhere else, but really? Why not put this energy into engaging with someone who actually would be relevant to the fantasy they subscribed to.
For the record, I’m super poor, which means I have to rely on free articles and I’m guessing most of my readers are the same. If I had money to buy a subscription to any paper in the country at all, I’d pick the Washington Post and/or the Seattle Times. I’d pick the Post because I think they are the best at what they do right now. I used to take both my local paper and the Seattle P-I, back before the P-I and the Times became one thing. My local paper is terrible and literally makes up quotes, is unreliable as to facts, and has a serious editorial bias. They also are big on vicctim blaming and wentfull on character assassination on him even though he was about as innocent as it’s possible to be and literally worked for them. Did I mention they area shitty employer? well that too. I vowed never to give them another penny for any reason as a result. I love and support local papers and believe they are incredibly important. I thought I’d always be a local paper subscriber, but not to this particular one. If the PI hadn’t been so expensive that I had to drop my subscription, I’d still be reading the PI/Times. I miss being as up on state politics as I used to be, but my financial situation is going to be incredibl precarious for the next few years.
So anyway, if I had money to online subscribe to the Post? I’d do it, but I don’t. As a result, I try to save my free articles for the most important things. Same with other limited access things like the NYT, Wired, Vanity Fair, etc.. I do my best to choose the most reliable source out of a set covering an issue that doesn’t involve pay walls. I carry a whole tiered list in my head, and while I can’t always get the best, I do try for the best I can reasonably get. I don’t link things like the Daily Mail, the Sun, mic.com, the New York Post, though I will occasionally end up with their links in the comments, which I can’t help. This is also why sometimes I will link different versions of the same basic news item. They generally have different takes or different secondary information/context/etc., or it might be a situation where a reader might prefer one source over another. Do you want just the basic facts or do you want it in a larger political historical context for example.
I thought I’d mention how I do my selection since it occasionally comes up and this weird anon thing reminded me I should probably explain why I do things the way I do.
I can not 100% know anything close to all the English Language news outlets in the world. I don’t even try. When I’m forced to sample from an unfamiliar outlet, I do try to google search them for bias and reputation, but that’s not going to be perfect. If I sample something you know isn’t a good source, feel free to let me know and I’ll look deeper into it. I can’t reasonably go back and dig that source out of everything I’ve posted across social media all the way back to the mid-oughts, but I can amend going forward, as I have on past occasions when such things were pointed out to me.
I do my best, and with me especially as I’m not a journalist, remember to look skeptically at anywhere you get links and news. We all have selection bias, whether in history, journalism, or in life. I do this because I have time and interest to try to share things going on the world with people who are busy and can’t possibly keep up. I am one disabled person in frail health. Do not take what I post as anything close to everything out there. I do my best, but again, one person with particular interests and biases. What you see here is whatever I managed to find that dayish.
So caveat emptor.

This is a post I didn’t consider having to write. But absolutely understand why i need to.
REASONS FOR THIS POST, WHY IT’S LATE, AND WHY IT’S WRITTEN LIKE IT IS
Okay. so this is a post I didn’t consider having to write. But absolutely understand why i need to. I'm gutted that people think that I or Banquet are appeasers or allowing platforms for abhorrent things. Not cos I'm gutted about myself or the business, but cos I'd hate people to think that others don't think of these things as serious.
Before we get too involved with the finer parts of the situation, I just want to clear a few things up. Some people have been asking why this post hasn't appeared quicker. I can't apologise for the time it's taken, but i do understand that it may be frustrating. I honestly don't know anyone who works the hours i do. Thursday and Friday were both 9:30am - 3:30am shifts. Saturday, while not so intense was 1:00pm - 7:00pm. We put on 5 and a half gigs (if you include Bacchus) in that time. To approx 1600 people. And of course we/I run a high street shop too. The work, while utterly fun, takes a lot of time and i couldn't really get to this sooner. Today i worked, had an hour skate (it really is good for my mind, and i wanted a clear mind for this) and then a bit of council work. I wanted to take time to articulate this, rather than a hurried inappropriate post. Sorry for not expressing previously why this wasn’t out sooner.
I've seen a post on the Banquet facebook that we're censoring posts. We're not. I think there's a function which doesn't automatically allow posts from people not attending the event... Normally that makes sense to stop spamming about sunglasses or weird bots. I can understand why people might think we're not letting views be expressed. But we're not doing that and we don’t intend to.
For reasons that I'm sure will become clear. I'm not going to name any bands or people in this post. You may well be able to guess who this refers to. That's for you to decide. I'm also utterly aware of the irony of posting this on tumblr, bearing in mind the below.
Friends who aren't really involved in anything related to "punk", have told me to not write anything, or to stick to a bare minimum. They seem to think, despite my living the life i do, that all these decisions in Banquet are black/red. They're not. And I guess customers, and people who aren't customers but get what we do from a distance, understand this. I reckon there's an expectation of Banquet to be something more than others. Like there's a higher bar for us. And i take this as a compliment. I absolutely understand that if/because some other band has done something before and "got away with it", that there's no argument that individual cases don't matter because "everyone's at it", whatever "it" is. And let me be clear that i understand that however much good we have or haven’t done elsewhere is irrelevant when talking about one specific issue.
BOOKING THE BAND
We, and basically I, book about 350 bands a year. Members of some will be reading this post. I bloody love the position we're in to do this. I always keep saying about how the buzz you see from people enjoying their favourite band is as big as the buzz you get from seeing your own favourite bands. We try to keep prices low, and put the bands in the most appropriate venues we have available. Yes, we're a business, but nearly all the gigs we book are driven by a desire to serve and entertain. I hope that's clear. We recently had the opportunity to book a band who's played for Banquet many times before. We were aware of there being accusations about a member of the band, and that there had been accusations over a period of time. I do acknowledge that I am saying all of this from a position of privilege, and understand that blogs are an effective communicator to amplify a voice against entities who have bigger voices. Yet personally, I made a decision years ago not to read the contents of accusatory posts on not just this band but on others too, and moreover on all people. A decision that I am not the judge of any case, by what's been said on the internet. So despite putting hours into this tumblr, I’ve chosen not to read others’ blogs about this or other cases.
We discussed booking the band with members of "senior" and "middle" management. If that's such a thing. It's Banquet after all, there's not some crazy hierarchy, but we did talk through it. Each has a veto on such decisions here. I wanted everyone to be comfortable with any gig we booked. We discussed whether or not there was a reason not to book this show. There's various principles upon which we book gigs, but the significant discussion here was whether there was a proven reason why we should not do the gig. One staff member (it turns out rightly) said we’d get a lot of shit for it. But none of us could define a reason why the gig shouldn't happen. The artist has recently worked with bands and labels we know and respect, and was now involved with a label we have a good relationship with. We discussed that we didn't see a situation that had changed since last time we booked the band. I might be wrong, or i might be blinkered, but when the most recent gig happened i don't recall any significant negative feedback, the in-store was great fun and went well.
THE ANNOUNCEMENT
We had tickets on sale for a while, certainly over a week, before it was "announced" fully as we were waiting for a green light from management. It was announced on Friday always my busiest day of the week and i have so much to juggle on a Friday even without a busy show in the evening. I saw a few tweets / FB posts come in reacting negatively to this announcement. I guess i expected some, but didn’t think it would be too many. As the day went on I saw a bigger reaction than I ever expected. Now let me be clear here, I believe that everyone speaking/typing their mind is doing so because they honestly believe what they're saying. There's people posting who i know personally, and there's many more who I’d regard as friends who I'm sure are watching from a distance. Even more in my mind is people who may be victims of horrid crimes who might think we're willingly appeasing something. I'm distraught at that thought.
Again i believe the postings to be entirely sincere. But, apart from the ones which are a few expletives, the sentiment revolves around us being perceived to platform a "known abuser". I'm not going to convince some people otherwise, but to me this is not "known". If I had read the various posts about it that people have pointed out to me since the announcement, then I might have had a different view. But the principle of not trialling by internet is one that I think is important, and that was my position. I do understand the massive difference between "not guilty" and "innocent" in a judicial scenario, but i think the idea that we are putting on an artist of someone we know to be an abuser is incorrect.
And it opens up so many ethical questions. I mean Banquet has certainly put on bands with known criminals and felons as members. We’ve put on artists about whom people have said “well, they must have known”. Banquet has been told it can’t put on other acts because of police advice. Shows on certain tours have been pulled in scandalous circumstances. We also boycott many artists, suppliers and releases we deem to be immoral because of the message they give or because of first-hand experience. And yes, there's countless examples I'm sure of stuff that's slipped through the net, where we've stocked stuff we wouldn't if we did know all the details of it.
Despite the online talk, few people have spoken to me personally about the issue. I understand it could well be because people feel awkward bringing it up. Only one person approached me directly on the day, and another the next day by text. I've also approached and spoken to a couple of ex-staff whose opinions I value. People have since pointed out to me that the situation is different than it was last year, and I reckon 4/5 years ago I might have picked up that something was different… But all this has come SINCE the announcement. I don’t recall any interaction with anyone talking to me about this before this gig was booked. I do closely monitor the Banquet socials with literally thousands of interactions every week. Maybe I missed something, but this is my honest belief.
WHAT NOW
Well, in truth, I don't know. For the reasons above we were not uncomfortable with the booking. So if it was a principled decision to go ahead with the booking, then it would seem not principled to pull it due to public interactions of people telling us they're not going to shop here anymore. That seems like it would be a commercial decision rather than a moral one. I hate the thought of people wanting to boycott us. Not because of the money, but because I really feel this little shop that I've put 15 years of my life into, is something more than the companies I boycott. I don't want people to lose the memories they have, because i feel it's an emotional connection rather than a financial one.
On Saturday i sought legal advice about the situation. IF, and I'm not advocating this, but IF we were to cancel, what would the messaging be? If we were to say it was due to accusations then we could actually be sued for defamation / libel. Something that a tumblr or facebook post can probably get away with, but something a medium-sized limited company could not. If we were to make up some nonsense about a scheduling conflict, then that would be a lie and not addressing the situation.
I know we'll be monitoring things like never before, and we'll continue to work with all channels to try to continue being the ethical company, and group of friends, we aim to be. We always want people to be, and feel, safe
I'm ABSOLUTELY happy to talk to people about this. And to listen. Face to face or otherwise. hit me up on jt@... if you want to do that. I won’t always be able to reply immediately.
I’m absolutely sorry for the offence that this has undoubtedly caused. I know it won't change many people's minds, but i hope people can see there was considered reason behind the decision made here.

Introduction to Laser Engraving
Introduction
https://lasergods.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/Engraving-1.mp3
Laser Engraving. What is it exactly. According to Wikipedia, https://ift.tt/2ocxBeL
“Laser engraving, which is a subset of laser marking,[1] is the practice of using lasers to engrave an object. Laser marking, on the other hand, is a broader category of methods to leave marks on an object, which also includes color change due to chemical/molecular alteration, charring, foaming, melting, ablation, and more. The technique does not involve the use of inks, nor does it involve tool bits which contact the engraving surface and wear out, giving it an advantage over alternative engraving or marking technologies where inks or bit heads have to be replaced regularly.”
Well that’s about the most boring definition I have ever heard. To me, laser engraving is 21st century expressionism. It’s an artists tool. Just like a pencil, paintbrush, charcoal, what have you, it’s a really neat way of getting your artistic expression on a blank canvas. Where a common painters canvas is, well, canvas, a laser engraving canvas can be just about anything. Instead of building up on that canvas with paint, we use light and heat to burn away the canvas. By using different speed and power and even focus, we manipulate a canvas to burn hotter or lighter creating varied effects. The possibilities are endless. How cool is that? There is one down side though. Variables. Where variables are sometimes a good thing, too many of them can sometimes be daunting and overwhelming. And with a laser, there are almost infinite. For example, lets take speed and power alone. If your laser is adjustable in mm/sec and you can go from 100 to 600 in 1mm increments. And you take power, from 1% to 100% in 1% increments. Well, without going into probability theory and computations and here’s how you figure it. You take 500 (increments in speed) and 100 (percent in power) and that gives you 50,000 different speed and power combinations alone! (I think. It could be more but its 6:20 am and I haven’t slept much) If there are any math whizzes out there that can clarify, please do so. The point is not the number itself, but the vast size of the number. And that’s just two variables! Now take into account substrate, color, shade, hue, saturation, just to name a few, and it’s a wonder why anyone would want to do this.
For me, it’s one simple phrase. Its when someone looks at my artwork and looks at me and goes, how the hell did you do this, and I see the pure wonderment in their faces. That’s what does it for me. I guess its how a magician feels after pulling off a spectacular trick.
So how do you get there? Where do you start? Knowledge my friends……….knowledge. I’ve scoured the internet for tips, tricks, techniques you name it. And don’t even get me started on scrap. You see, for the most part, with a laser it’s one and done. You can’t “unburn” something. Once it’s there, it’s there. Oh sure, sometimes you can go over it again, but how do you do it without ruining it. It isn’t easy.
I once took a 1.5 inch piece of pine that a client wanted me to burn a picture on using a cell phone picture, of a landscape scene. Now let me tell you, 1 Pine, 2 Cell Phone Picture and 3, Landscape are hands down THE WORST scenario you can come up against. So what did I do? I bought a planar, and every time I engraved it and it came out like crapola, id plane it down and start over. This was a big piece of pine, with natural edges. When it was all said and done, I wound up with a ¾ thick piece, and a lot of kindling from shavings. Scrap happens. The key is try to minimize it.
By learning some basics about how a laser works, what substrates work, and HOW they work, and artwork techniques, (such as photo manipulation), by taking these courses, you will be well on your way to developing your own processes, and your own techniques. So let’s get started.
Laser Engraving In A Nutshell
https://lasergods.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/Engraving-2.mp3
How a laser works:
I’ll be taking a lot of the clinical definitions from Wikipedia and then simplifying them:
“A laser engraving machine can be thought of as three main parts: a laser, a controller, and a surface. The laser is like a pencil – the beam emitted from it allows the controller to trace patterns onto the surface. The controller direction, intensity, speed of movement, and spread of the laser beam aimed at the surface. The surface is picked to match what the laser can act on.”
Think of it as being a kid with a magnifying glass, burning things using sunlight, only this is really precise
Here are some general terms you will need to become familiar with:
Raster Engrave: Raster engraving traces the laser across the surface in a back-and-forth slowly advancing linear pattern that will remind one of the printhead on an inkjet or similar printer.
Vector Engraving: Vector engraving follows the line and curve of the pattern to be engraved, much like a pen-based plotter draws by constructing line segments from a description of the outlines of a pattern.
Vector Engraving Cuts, Raster Fills, its that simple
Power: The amount of power that is send to the lens
Speed: The speed at which the laser head moves, therefore limiting the amount of time a laser is in the work at once
A vector setting is like using a really precise scroll saw. You just set your lineweight to something small, and the laser will cut along that line.
Types Of Lasers
https://lasergods.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/Engraving-3.mp3
Lets talk about the two main types of Lasers: CO2 and Fiber Optic
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carbon_dioxide_laser
The carbon dioxide laser (CO2 laser) was one of the earliest gas lasers to be developed. It was invented by Kumar Patel of Bell Labs in 1964,[1] and is still one of the most useful. Carbon dioxide lasers are the highest-power continuous wave lasers that are currently available. They are also quite efficient: the ratio of output power to pump power can be as large as 20%. The CO2 laser produces a beam of infrared light with the principal wavelength bands centering on 9.4 and 10.6 micrometers (μm).
What does this mean? Basically it’s the most popular laser on the market today, and readily available for a smaller price tag. It can engrave and cut a variety of substrates including but not limited to wood, plastic, paper, glass, granite, and leather. It cannot, however, engrave most bare metals, because the frequency of the laser is such that the beam bounces off the metal like bullets off Superman’s Chest. There are coatings and such that we will get into in a different course
A fiber laser or fiber laser is a laser in which the active gain medium is an optical fiber doped with rare-earth elements such as erbium, ytterbium, neodymium, dysprosium, praseodymium, thulium and holmium. They are related to doped fiber amplifiers, which provide light amplification without lasing. Fiber nonlinearities, such as stimulated Raman scattering or four-wave mixing can also provide gain and thus serve as gain media for a fiber laser.
Fiber Lasers are used more for marking. Barcodes, Lot numbers, etc, they are used mainly in commercial applications. It does extremely well on metal marking. The one thing about Fiber Lasers. Don’t ever look directly at the beam unless you are looking through Protective Lenses or special glass. It will burn your retinas out.
So I Bought This Laser Engraver…
https://lasergods.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/Engraving-4.mp3
I bought my laser after I saw it being demonstrated at a Trade Show. I saw all the cool things it could do, and it blew my mind. I originally wanted to sell glasses online through etsy. So what did I do? I bought this huge top of the line laser engraver from epilog. Its an M2 Fusion and its wicked cool. So what was my business plan? (Um, what’s a business plan) I just wanted to engrave glasses and sell them. Guess what, there’s a lot more to it. A LOT MORE. For the moment let’s focus on CO2 Lasers and what they can do.
Different Mediums
Here we will look at some common substrates:
Wood
https://laserengravinginstitute.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/Engraving-5.mp3
Wood is by far my favorite substrate to work with because there are so many kinds. I especially like, you guessed it, photographs. By photographs, I don’t mean an interpretation, I mean a photograph. So I spent years and tons of money on materials and documenting things like a mad scientist. You see, wood is a funny thing. First of all stick with the hardwoods. Stuff like Maple, Birch, Cherry, Alder, and Walnut. Walnut is the best for text and vector art. It doesn’t overburn and gives a nice rich deep crisp engrave. Birch is the best for photographs. Solid birch. You can do plywood but that is usually the bottom of the barrel birch. If you get a solid piece with a nice smooth grain, it will come out beautiful.
Here are some tips when engraving with wood:
Always sand it first. Your engrave will come out much nicer
When done, wipe it down with water or sand it with 600 grit paper. “Overburn” or edge scorching leaves charred marks around your image. If you sand it lightly, you will get rid of that but still keep the crispness of your image
“Sneak up on it” It’s a term I use when you burn something multiple times fast with low power. It brings out the image a little bit at a time. You can always burn it again, you can’t unburn it. Also if you can sand it in between burning, that will help you as well, as long as your laser repeats
Stay away from Pine. What does pine have more than anything? SAP. When you engrave pine with even a little power, it boils the sap, and boy, is that stuff sticky. Plus one other caution about Pine. It catches fire really easy
Inlay: A Laser is really good for doing inlay work. You can cut and inlay mother of pearl, abalone, wood veneer and even paper! That’s a course for a different time.
Plastic
https://lasergods.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/Export-6.mp3
Plastic melts. That’s is all a laser is doing to plastic. Melting it very precisely. So Tip#1: Don’t use too much heat in one place for a very long period of time. It will essentially turn to goo.
The best plastic to engrave on is acrylic. NOT POLYCARBONATE. They are NOT the same. Oh and if you are trying to get a nice frosty look on acrylic, use CAST acrylic, not extruded. You will know if you are using extruded because it will engrave clear. And if you REALLY want it to look cool, buy NOVUS polish 1, 2 and 3 and polish it first. It will look like glass. Engraving acrylic, especially photos on acrylic, it tricky at first. But once you get used to what to look for, it comes out great. Then, on clear acrylic, you can light it up using flexible light strips. Again, that’s another class for another time.
Another thing about acrylic. It can’t hold a really high resolution. In acrylic you want to go fast with low power, and around 300 dpi in your image. With acrylic, you can get really cool effects also when you cut it using a vector setting. It almost polishes the edge.
Glass
https://lasergods.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/Export-7.mp3
Glass, actually, doesn’t engrave. It microshatters. That’s right. It explodes, at a molecular level. Nonetheless, it is violent. What is glass made out of? Sand…….mostly. However, there are air and water molecules trapped within the glass. When the laser hits the air and water molecules, the molecules rapidly expand, causing them to break apart the bonds that hold the silicate together. Do this a couple of million times and you get a rough surface.
Engraving anything on glass takes patience. Engraving PHOTOGRAPHS on glass takes the patience of Mother Teresa, Gandhi, and Buddha put together. Its cool when it works, however it takes LOTS of practice.
Marble & Granite
https://lasergods.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/Export-8.mp3
Granite and Marble don’t really engrave either. What the laser is doing is removing the polish of the crystals therefore creating a matte finish. Pictures do well on granite and marble. I will do a course on these two substrates as well in the future. The photo prep is not bad, you just have to get some experience at it.
Coated Metals
https://lasergods.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/Export-9.mp3
Coated metals such as anodized aluminum can be tricky as well because there isn’t really any shading. Its either exposed the underlying material, or it hasn’t. What gives it the illusion of shading is how much of the coating you have removed, and how much of the underlying material you have removed. It’s an interesting medium to work with, and with the addition of other colors, you can get pretty creative.
Conclusion
https://lasergods.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/Export-10.mp3
This course was created to give you just a taste of what you can do with a laser engraver. In classes yet to come, I will have not only lectures, but hands on assignments of what to do and how to do it. I am going to have guest lecturers, live feeds, seminars, you name it. Thank you for enrolling in this class, and I look forward to teaching you.

“Just not there yet” and that’s enough, for now, to keep it at the minimum. 3-17-19
“When I say it’s you I like, I’m talking about that part of you that knows that life is far more than anything you can ever see or hear or touch. That deep part of you that allows you to stand for those things without which humankind cannot survive. Love that conquers hate, peace that rises triumphant over war, and justice that proves more powerful than greed.” - Fred Rogers To start, or maybe, it's in conclusion, a little misplaced in the note taking department this week, as I had to struggle to make audio notes while driving (because that's a lot of my days lately), so deciphering them meant not a lot of copy and paste this time. It was some work, but here it is; I feel like free market capitalism works better with smaller populations, but as that population grows capitalism loses its humanity and starts to fall apart. My example is billionaire "Clark Couldcare" is more apt to feed or help little starving "Timmy Bornpoor", if he can actually see him in his society, and more apt to help those more closely related to them, where it's harder to ignore the struggles of those in your community. A larger population, like what we have here the U.S., make it damn near impossible to even hear the cries of the little Timmy Bornpoors and their struggles had, or injustice perpetrated on, from poverty to racial equality those cries that are heard can easily be ignored if you can look around and justify "No such struggle here anywhere because I can't see it, therefore it must be exaggerated at best". New generations of young people are on the way, and those days of people only giving a shit about themselves is going to come to an end more quickly than people realize. Terms like progressive liberal and/or socialists are coming with these young people because they've been watching us, and our predecessors fuck shit up. They don't lack the humanity and compassion our, and previous generations, thought was the way to pull the country up by its bootstraps. They see that that only benefits a small, and very limited, part of the population. I had planned on sharing a lot of definitions and different things I have learned to give a little insight into why I feel like this, and why I believe it makes sense, but instead I will only share these two; So·ci·o·ec·o·nom·ic : Relating to or concerned with the interaction of social and economic factors. Universal basic income (UBI) : A model for providing all citizens of a country or other geographic area with a given sum of money, regardless of their income, resources or employment status. The purpose of the UBI is to prevent or reduce poverty and increase equality among citizens. Now, I feel like most of my explanation for the "why" it will work, is wasted on a lot of people because they first need a full understanding of these two words; em·pa·thy : the ability to understand and share the feelings of another. and com·pas·sion : sympathetic pity and concern for the sufferings or misfortunes of others. I believe far too many people, even the ones that know what the words mean, lack the ability to use them. If everyone invoked them, man, how far could we go? The skies wouldn't even be the limit. They are not super, or extraordinary abilities either. That's why its so sad. It's mostly about educating myself in areas where I have limited knowledge. Things that interest me, like the economy and the hows and whats and whys. That's the main reason I was going to share any of this, and my theory of how being human is what the economy needs and how I feel it would benefit the country, and how it is absolutely all connected. Most of my research doesn't lean left or right, not like some of my opinions seem to do. It's more general definitions and such, although I have read some articles, and watched some things that definitely lean more left, as much of the stuff I value probably does, not all of it, but certainly a lot. I had planned on sharing several definitions with you guys and out of all of the ideologies that I've tried to familiarize myself with the one that I believe best fits what I think and feel is probably a form of Democratic Socialism, with some form of a U.B.I. (Universal Basic Income). You can research that on your own if you'd like. I would like to mention that I wasn't completely sold on the idea until I watched an interview by Joe Rogan. He was talking with Andrew Yang and the platform he's using to run for President. Although I don't think he's going to get enough momentum to actually be elected president, his idea/ideas are pretty sound and he has plans for action that a lot of politicians lack. I know I shared the interview on my Facebook page, but you can also look it up on YouTube if you want. But. . . I'm not going to write about any more of that today than what I've already shared. I suppose I'll save my philosophical socio-economic term paper for later, plus I'm still growing in that area anyway. I keep coming 'round to the fact that I can't seem to reconcile with some of the more cold and callous opinions of people close to me. It stays on my heart so much as of late, that more than a few times I've thought, and even decided, that I was done with it. Done with it all, social media, done writing this blog, just done with the selfishness that makes up a lot of my outer, outer circle. Every life has ups and downs, but the absolute lowest revolving points currently in my life are the discussions I have with people who lack compassion for other people, and the people I know in real life who are very open about being bigots and racists. Those are hard to take, but its those who are naively racist, or judgementally prejudice. They just can't see how they are, and it bothers me in the deepest parts of my heart that they are like that. But. . .what am I to do? Right? Wrong! "Some people just aren't there yet." I find myself saying this quite a bit lately. Granted some of them, probably even most of them, are never going to get there. And since I can't know that for sure, I will try harder to be more civil with them when I interact, and communicate with those "unfortunates" who lack the ability to see, and feel with a human understanding as it were, the similarities instead of the differences found in each other, every other. Its the ones who think "what I said or did doesn't make me racist, because look at my black friends" etc. I realized during a conversation with someone the other day that I used to be one of those people "who just weren't there yet". I'm here now though, so all hope is not lost on them. It happened so quickly too. Like I almost completely faded out of the conversation when the realization hit me that some people just aren't there yet. It put a mend on my heart, even if only for long enough to be right here, right now. . . Seeing all the hate in this country, and where I believe it mostly stems from. and trying to not let it consume me to the point of constant insanity can be tough. Sometimes I wish I could turn the "feels" off, but I am so grateful the universe never saw fit to that to me. lol I am trying to provide myself an outlet, and maybe refuge to those seeking out anything relatable, but I'm starting to feel like all the hate that is in some hearts, although it may vary slightly, seems to manifest itself easier than love for a lot of people. It sucks. It hurts my heart like you would not believe. I feel like we need way more Fred Rogers wannabes in this world, and a lot less Donald Trumps. And saying it's easier to relate to Trump than with Mr. Rogers, is essentially just showing, well, to be honest, a lazy side because it takes a little more work to get to where you can feel the love like that. It's just easier to keep hold if your hate, even it's a small amount. Believe me, I know. I can only relate because I used to be one of those. And before any of you freak out, I'm not saying that Trump is directly responsible. Because he obviously is not. What I am saying is that when you have such a huge public platform in which people with true hate in their hearts, find your topics relatable, it's a recipe for disaster. How come no one can see that a lot of these are a direct causality? A terrorist shooter in New Zealand, says he relates with what Trump stands for. C'mon. Let's say 100 people looked up to you, for leadership. We'll say 85 of them were regular law-abiding people and they may have some small inconsequential prejudices but they never let them surface. Now lets say, 15 hold very strong beliefs in some ignorant hate-based ideologies, such as those involving racism, bigotry etc. Now whether or not you stepped into this role, wouldn't you feel slightly responsible for the actions, if one or more of the 15 started acting out aggressively towards any of the other 85, like assaulting and killing, especially if they do it in relation to you or something you said? Even if they are wrong, and none of it relates with you or your ideals, wouldn't you, at the very least publicly denounce them? We have an acting president that is in direct opposition of my push for kindness, when he publicly belittles other Americans, or other human beings for that matter. Even the mission to help civilize, which I have consigned to help with, albeit it is more localized, is definitely taking hits from his supporters all the time. You aren't allowed to tell me that my blog, and everything it stands for, which currently is the expression of care and gratitude, the push for kindness, and a mission to civilize, is good and the reasoning is sound and acceptable and that I should keep writing, but then turn right around and believe I shouldn't speak out about who and what I feel to be the biggest threats to those same damn ideals! Can you see how that just isn't going to work for me? My blending of politics, which hasn't always seemed, or been inherent at the time absolutely cannot be left out. Everything in our current political system, to include discussions on social media, SCREAM hate. Therefore I will continue to share my objective, in here and everywhere. Be kind and don't be a douche bag, especially in an open public forum. Once I found my way to this side of life though, it's better livin' to be sure, although it does open your eyes to just how much work is out there to be done. When I first started taking notes early in the week for this entry, I was debating shutting it all down, my facebook, the blog all of it. I had all but decided. The people in my social media circle, by and large, are more saddening than uplifting with some limited exceptions. But there is enough nonsense that makes me wonder whether my push for kindness, my mission for civility was even worth it still. That is until I started writing. There's nothing like airing everything in here for the world to see, because I almost always find my own light by the end of each of my journal journeys, as it were. What would Fred Rogers say if I caved and gave in? How would my grandpa Raines feel about me giving up? Man, what is true in my heart, isn't enough if it stays inside and not all fights have to happen, but a lot of them do. You may not want to adhere to all of the same principles that I do in my life, and that's ok (kinda). But I'll be damned if I am going to be made to feel some kind of negative way about my positives either. I can't be done, not now anyway. My fight is nowhere near through. Although, I'll put this part here as a gentle reminder to slow down on posting shit just to stir up shit, and try to refocus on what it is I truly want from all of this in the end. It's not incessant arguing, especially without finding common ground anywhere. I also have to remember that not everyone is "here" yet and that some never will be. Then just continue to move forward. Because that forward progress is what we are striving for anyways. I suppose that's enough for today. Sorry by the way. I'm pretty sure I changed directions 2 or 3 times in the middle of this one. lol Keep sharing the love and laughter with the world around you, and please remember that being kind and civilized is the epitome of being human. It is what separates us from wild animals and the fact that we can feel and share compassion like we do is far more important than knowledge of what it is alone. Until next week; “How sad it is that we give up on people who are just like us.” - Fred Rogers

Online Marketing Made Simple: A Step-by-Step Guide
https://neilpatel.com/what-is-online-marketing/Do you know who Chandler Bolt is?
If you’re an online marketing nerd like me, you probably do.
But, if you’re part of the other 99.9% of the world who isn’t super excited about this “Internet marketing stuff,” you’ve probably never heard of this man.
So, what is he doing with this headline on Business Insider?
How did he get on there?
Is he rich or something? Yes, he is indeed.
That’s part of the beauty of online marketing.
This 21-year-old kid has made hundreds of thousands of dollars from his kitchen table.
No need for fame, magazine interviews, talk show visits, or acting classes (you know, to act in a blockbuster movie).
You have no clue who Chandler Bolt is. But he has made tons of money, and he’s also helping others do the same.
His company, Self-Publishing School, helps people publish books on Amazon and make a living from it.
If you’re an introvert, that’s a cause to celebrate!
Fewer than 20 years ago, extroverts had a way better chance of becoming rich and successful.
Why? It involved a ton of networking.
You had to hire employees and build a huge company. Or, for a career in arts, music, movies, etc., you had to get every person in your industry to know you.
While connections are still a huge deal, today you can get them right from your couch (or from your living room floor in my case).
As a single individual, you can build a huge business from the comfort of your home after work, during your afternoons, and on your weekends.
I don’t think that I’m being overly dramatic when I say that online marketing is your shot at the life of your dreams.
Trust me — I would know.
I want you to have as much fun at work as these guys and I do. So, today I’ll introduce you to this world with my online marketing guide.
Note: Even if you’re deep down the rabbit hole already, you can still learn a ton of new things from the following examples.

If you’ve read my previous guide on digital marketing, you already know that it’s different.
Not every digital marketing campaign is automatically an online marketing effort.
According to TNMedia, online marketing is “…any tool, strategy or method of getting the company name out to the public. The advertisements can take many different forms and some strategies focus on subtle messages rather than clear-cut advertisements.”
Want the drop-dead simple version of it?
Online marketing is any effort to spread the word about your company that uses the Internet to reach people.
Basically, it’s anything that you do online to get more eyeballs on you, grab people’s attention, and hopefully, at some point, get them to buy from you.
There are seven major sub-categories of online marketing that I want to cover in this guide.
Overview
We’ve already talked about search engine optimization (SEO), and I showed you all of the important aspects of it that you have to get right.
Next to SEO, there’s search engine marketing (SEM), which is simply the paid version of SEO.
Marketers pay Google to display ads in their search results in the hopes that they will drive traffic (especially interested people, or leads) to their product landing pages.
Then there’s content marketing. This is where marketers try to create valuable media and content to distribute to potential future customers. This is the good guy version of online marketing where you mostly try to guilt people into buying.
Of course, you already know social media marketing, which is where you use one or several social media channels to engage with customers, build relationships, and then send them to your products and services.
Pay per click advertising (or PPC) is similar to search engine marketing, but it isn’t limited to Google and its competitors. Most social media networks let you create ads that integrate naturally into their feeds, allowing you to pay for clicks to your website.
Affiliate marketing is a kind of referral marketing where you share profits with fellow marketers in exchange for promoting each other’s products.
And finally, there’s email marketing, which some already consider old-school. But it’s still one of the most effective channels. Once your customers have given you permission to contact them, you can email them at any time, providing value and asking them to buy when the time is right.
You can already guess how big online marketing really is. You know how huge of a space each of these individual categories fill.
I mean, just think about how many social media platforms you can name off the top of your head:
Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, Tumblr, Google+, YouTube, Periscope, LinkedIn, Reddit, StumbleUpon…
OK, you get the point.
I want to give you a good grip on all of these categories just like in our beginner’s guide, yet not drown you in the vast information that’s out there.
That’s why I’ll give you one example in each category of someone who absolutely crushes it in their niche along with some great points to help you get started.
Ready. Set. Go!
SEO – Search Engine Optimization
It goes without saying that I think Quick Sprout is one of the best sites when it comes to SEO (we’re kind of a big deal, I think).
Our Advanced Guide to SEO alone has gotten thousands of shares.
But, instead of spending an entire category bragging, I want to point you to someone who is a true search engine marketing ninja who has worked for us at Quick Sprout for quite some time.
I want to point him out not only because he has all of the SEO skills you need up his sleeve, but also because he is super underrated.
Every time I read an article like“15 SEO Gurus That You Should Know for 2015,” I’m shocked that he’s not on there.
Brian Dean, aka Backlinko, might be flying under the radar. But when you start Googling around and learning SEO, you’re bound to bump into him.
He outranks huge sites like Wikipedia, Forbes, and Copyblogger, and he completely dominates the SEO space with his super long case studies that provide actionable, step-by-step instructions for upping your SEO game.
Backlinko ranks #1 AND #2 for “how to get backlinks.”
What’s great about his blog is that instead of just rounding up SEO news like Search Engine Land and others do, he actually shows you how to implement good SEO techniques that work.
As I outlined in one of the previous guides in this series, SEO is the process of optimizing your online content so that a search engine likes to show it as a top result for searches of a certain keyword.
Brian is one of the best sources on the web for you to learn how to do search engine marketing right.
For example, Brian recently published an article called “How to get backlinks with guestographics.”
There, he does two things.
1. He shows you the results that prove that the strategy works.
2. He gives you detailed steps that you can follow to execute it.
As a case study, he talks about someone who he’s helped pull off this strategy in their niche.
You see the results, and then you can just scroll down and follow along as you read. In this case, the steps are:
Step 1: Publish an Awesome Infographic
Step 2: Simple (But Effective) Link Prospecting
Step 3: Show Them Your Infographic
Step 4: Bribe Your Prospects With Free Content
Step 5: Get Your Contextual Links
That’s easy to follow, right? So, what’s the catch?
It’s hard to execute. It takes time.
And that’s the reason that not many people do it. Be one of the few who does and you’ll get the results.
Just check out this backlink that we got to a Quick Sprout infographic:
Do you want more proof?
Go through the entire Backlinko blog. You’ll find fewer than 40 posts over the last several years.
If Brian’s SEO didn’t work, then he would never have been able to grow Backlinko to 100,000+ monthly readers, 100,000 email subscribers, and such a massive SEO brand with fewer than 40 blog posts.
The following three blog posts are the best ones to help you get started:
How to rank for any keyword
Link Building: The Definitive Guide
Google’s 200 Ranking Factors: The Complete List
Within search engine optimization, there are two big sectors to be aware of:
On-page and off-page SEO. Let’s dive into each.
On-Page SEO
Over the past few years, Google has made numerous updates to their algorithms.
Data tells us that Google makes up to 600 changes to their algorithm every single year.
It’s almost impossible to keep up with Google’s rapid pace and changing user behavior.
But one thing that’s remained relatively constant is conducting on-page SEO.
Most on-page activities for SEO aren’t linked to direct ranking factors, but rather to indirect factors like click-through rate and time on site.
For example, an on-page SEO task that’s common is to optimize your meta description and title tag:
Your title tag and meta description are what shows up on a given Google search result. For example, if someone searches for “SEO Tips,” my post will show up with the headline and description that I’ve personally customized.
While placing keywords in the title and description can help users navigate the content faster (as seen by the bolded text), it doesn’t directly increase rankings.
So simply stuffing keywords in your meta and title tags isn’t an option.
But they do contribute to click-through rate. When your title tags and meta descriptions are more compelling or related to the topic that someone is searching for, you can expect higher click-through rates.
And the higher the CTR, the higher the chance of ranking better.
Google is all about providing the best user experience possible. So if Google notices that your post that ranks at #10 is getting a higher CTR than the post above you, they will move your content up.
On-page SEO consists of a few major elements to be aware of:
Crawl errors
Keyword research
Page optimization
Speed
In this section, I’ll walk you through how you can improve each of these elements to get your on-page SEO on the right track.
Crawl errors
Crawl errors can be anything from a 404 error (broken link) to duplicate content. And all of these issues can plague your website with:
Slow speeds
Impacted rankings
Penalties from Google
Increased risk of users leaving your site (bouncing)
If you’ve ever seen this on your site, it’s a broken link error that can cause major problems:
For example, 404 errors can impact your traffic heavily if another external source is linking to them.
If you’ve gotten your content featured on another site, but the link is broken, you’re losing out on tons of traffic.
One of the fastest tools to fix crawl errors that could be harming your site is Screaming Frog.
It’s a technical SEO tool that can scan your website for free, telling you detailed information on what you need to fix and how to do it:
When scanning your site, be sure to look for common problem areas like:
Duplicate or missing content
404 errors
These issues are all too common on the majority of sites.
Keyword research
Keyword research is a fundamental process in any online marketing game plan for SEO.
Keywords are what you search in a search engine to find the content you are looking for.
For example, type “SEO Guide” into Google — that would be a keyword. And pages can target these keywords to compete in the rankings.
There are a few types of keywords to be aware of before conducting a basic keyword research strategy. There are two major kinds:
Long-tail keywords: Long-tail keywords are longer keywords made up of 3-5+ words. They are often easier to target due to specificity, less traffic, and less competition.
Head keywords: Head or short-tail keywords are one-word or two-word keywords that are more general. For example, “basketball shoes” would be a competitive head keyword.
A good SEO strategy will target a mixture of both of these kinds of terms.
Short-tail keywords will be much more competitive because they are more general (and therefore have a higher volume).
On the other hand, long-tail keywords will get you less traffic but will convert better:
To conduct keyword research, all you need to do is head to a keyword tool like Moz or the AdWords Keyword Planner.
Simply start by entering the basic topic that you want to cover for your next post or page:
Searching for your basic keyword will give you a list of metrics telling you the volume (how many searches per month), difficulty (competition ranking for it), and the number of clicks that come from organic search.
Lastly, it will also give you keyword suggestions.
Generally speaking, when looking to target keywords for your next blog post, you want to find long-tail terms with higher volumes and lower difficulty scores.
Then, you can take that keyword and follow the next steps under page optimization!
Page optimization
Page optimization is a critical step in the process of SEO. Page optimization involves doing a few basic tasks to optimize your page for specific keywords and for search engines.
Remember: You’re writing content and optimizing pages for both the user and the search engine.
Everything from URLs to internal links can have an impact on your page performance.
This on-page SEO checklist from Backlinko is one of my favorite ways to stay on top of every new blog post that I write:
All of these factors help you to both add context to the page for Google and structure it in a friendly way for the user.
For example, when you search for an article on Google, you expect to get something similar to your search:
Everything from the permalink (URL) to the title and structure of your post (h1 and h2 headings) makes a difference in how Google scans your content and how user-friendly it is.
The better on-page optimization you have, the longer users will stay around to consume your content.
Plus, optimizing things like internal links (where you link to another article on your site from a new post) will help you drive users throughout your entire site.
Always be sure to follow the on-page SEO cheat sheet above when you write new blog posts.
Improve your page speed
One of the biggest factors for success is improving the speed at which your page loads.
When it comes to SEO, you want your content to load fast. Google prefers websites that load fast as well.
Studies have shown time and time again that top-ranking sites are faster than their lower-ranking competitors:
According to their latest reports, as page load times increase by just a few seconds, the likelihood that someone will leave your site increases dramatically.
If your site loads in ten seconds, you can expect users to run for the hills.
Google’s current standards state that best practices are three seconds or below. Yet the majority of businesses in every industry are still too slow:
Thankfully, Google offers free tools like Test My Site and Pagespeed Insights. Each of these can help you improve your site speed dramatically.
When you improve your site speeds, you can expect users to stay around on your site, reducing bounce rates that can negatively impact your organic rankings.
Always continue to test your site speed and improve where you can. These tools will help you fix any lingering problems by offering detailed, step-by-step solutions under each problem area.
Off-Page SEO
What’s off-page SEO? It’s simply the opposite of on-page SEO.
That means that it’s all of the factors and activities that you can do (off-page) to raise the ranking of your site on search engines.
There are a few major ways that off-page SEO comes into play. Everything from link building to social promotion and content syndication can improve your off-page SEO.
Even things like guest blogging or writing a promotional piece on another site can result in a link (i.e., off-page SEO).
Here are a few ways to rank higher with off-page SEO.

Insurance question for 17 yr old driver (sports cars)?
At the end of the summer I am allowed to buy my own car. At that time I will have been driving for about a year and a half under my parent's insurance. I have 2 options as far a buying a car: putting about a $5000 down payment on a car and my parents paying off the rest before I graduate college, or buying a car for $5000. The cars I would buy for $5000 would either be a mitsubishi 3000gt or a nissan 300zx. I like both of these cars, but they're not very professional and since I hopefully will have whatever car I buy through college, I want something that doesn't scream hey i'm fresh out of high school and stuck with a sports car! As far as putting a $5000 down payment at a local dealership, my limit is about $16,000 at the most. For 16,000 I was looking at a used (obviously) BMW M3, Mazda Rx8, and Audi A4, or (if I get extremely lucky and stumble upon a) Infiniti G35. These cars look a little more mature than the ones I would buy for $5000.""

Will a written warning increase my insurance rates?
A couple of months ago I got pulled over doing a 37 in a 25. The cop was nie and let me go with a WRITTEN warning. Weeks later someone totaled my car while it was parked. I recently got a new car and the 1st payment was only $120 something and that was ear our estimated quote, but for the past 2 payments the price has been over $200 dollars and my mother is convinced that my insurance company saw the WRITTEN warning and thats why my rates went up. Is it true that this thing can happen? From my research and understanding insurance companies don't hardly ever do this and thats why is was a warning. The major reason I am concerned is I am interested in buying a Dodge SRT-4 sometime and insurance is very high especially for someone under 21 and 25, and I probably wouldn't be able to afford the insurance payment because they would be as high enough without the warning. We plan on calling EMC insurance after they open either today or tomorrow.""

Should I get health insurance for psychotherapy?
Assuming that each visit with a clinical psychologist is around $100-150, what is the cheapest method of getting coverage for therapy? I have no health insurance and don't think I could afford it at this time. It seems that the cost of plans with no deductible would be around the same price as paying for treatment out of pocket. Are there any other options for those that can't afford insurance? Something that would involve low monthly payments over a longer period of time? (Hopefully with a low interest rate, if there is one.) If it matters, I am an otherwise healthy 21-year-old and living in southern California. No history of physical illness. I hear that insurance company's can be fickle about pre-existing conditions. Any advice is much appreciated! Thanks! BTW, I don't know anything about health insurance, so excuse the obvious naivety :)""
How can I get my own insurance?

It's bone stock. I know that if you make decent grades you get discounts and I make A/B's in all AP so I don't know if that would help very much? and I have never had a wreck or ticket, & I am just turning 16. How much will it cost for an 18 year old to insure a BMW M3?
I am an 18 year old, I've just passed my car test and I want a 2002 - 2004 BMW M3 (1.8 - 2.0l) I will not settle for anything less better-looking than a BMW. I also just passed my full motorcycle test 2 months ago. I have 2 years no claims bonus for my Motorcycle insurance since I started riding at the age of 16. I'm planning to sell my current motorcycle and buy a reasonable BMW M3 priced around 2-3k I was wondering what kind of insurance I should be expecting? I have got way more experience on the roads than any other 18 year old out there; but I'm not so sure that the insurance companies will take in mind my 2 years NCB on my motorcycle. Either way; how much could I be expecting to pay? I'm going to be insured as the 2nd driver and hopefully not pay more than 4k anually? The comparison websites are just bull crap, they are quoting my prices of over 20k, even for a small ford ka. I know I know big car young driver - but please just answer my question :) Thanks in advance.""

Car Accident - Auto insurance Question?
Today I was involved in a horrible collision. Car made a complete stop put hazard lights on, I made a complete stop at a reasonable distance however 15 seconds after I stopped I look at the mirror and a taxi van cab slams right into me my car goes flying forward hits the truck infront of me and bounces back, air bag goes off . Long story short I'm in horrible pain and have evident bruises . Police arrived filled out reports. The man that hit me was found at fault for both collisions. So my major concern is : I called my insurance company , made the claim they took down all the info but at the end of the conversation she told me that if I don't have full coverage I'm out of luck then she asked me if I do which I don't remember . So I'm taking a look at my policy contract and I don't see anywhere where it says full coverage ... I think it is full coverage since my car was being financed. All it basically says on the contract is liability limit $ 1 000, 000 So if they write off my car what happens next?""

Is being an adult really that hard? Owning a house? Having a job? Owning a car? INSURANCE??!?

What if I don't have one and my car is perfectly fine? Please don't even get me started on bills! It freaks me out to know that companies just want money, money, money and wont stop at anything to get it. The insurance company wants to total the car. I do not. Where can I find info on LOW COST Medical Insurance In Central NY? (Student Artist Musician Business Owner)?
My wife and I are moving soon from PHX, AZ to the greater Syracuse area. I am moving my multimedia business / record label (websites, print design, videography, DVD production and studio recording) and I need information on which companies can provide my family reasonable cost heath insurance. Right now my wife works fulltime so we use her benefits, but we will be starting a family and would like to keep her at home for a few years. In PHX, health insurance for non-group individuals runs about $300 a month - from what I can see in CNY it can cost closer to $1000! Can some one help me with this? Am I looking at the wrong companies or is it just that mush more expensive? Are any loop holes? In some states Students, Artist, Musicians & Small Business Owners can get highly discounted rates - is this true in CNY? Can anyone help? Thanks in advance!""

Car insurance INCREASE every 6 months with no accidents/tickets? wtf!?
Last year I had Unitrin Direct....they were charging me $85 a month...this is with NO tickets or accidents for the last 5 years of my driving record....this is also with the BASIC insurance that you need in Florida...10/10/20...NO collision...and a $1000 deductible..... So at the end of my 6 months...it was time for a renewal...they tried to bump me up to $140 a month for no reason...still no accidents/tickets...nothing had changed...i had expected my rate to DECREASE....they tell me it's a STATEWIDE INCREASE ......so i called around... Ended up switching to Allstate who has been charging me $90 a month (better than $140 right?).....6 months go by, everything's cool.....now my policy renewal is coming up and they're trying to tell me i need to pay $160 a month for their basic insurance. Are you kidding me? And according to them it's another STATEWIDE INSURANCE INCREASE ...... They also told me that it could be due to not having CONSECUTIVE insurance for the last few years, as in...I switched from State Farm to Unitrin to Allstate......they told me call the state insurance commissioner...which I did.... Got connected to some guy in Gainesville who tells me that the INSURANCE companies are the ones who decide the rates and increases...not them. Pretty much BS....Allstate's blaming the state, state's blaming them...feels like a huge runaround to me. Guess my questions are.... Should I stick with Allstate and pay $160 a month for this absolute BASIC insurance (keep in mind..no collision, $1000 deductible)...my car's not even worth a YEAR of their insurance. .... Or shop around? But if I switch back to Unitrin or get Geico or whatever....will I risk having ANOTHER increase after 6 months? And is it true that one of the reasons for these statewide increases is not having consecutive insurance with the same company for so many years? Thanks all.""

Is fully comprehensive insurance worth paying on a 1000 car?
I'm a 39 year old driver who's had a full licence since the age of 17, I have full no claims and although I've been involved in 2 accidents neither of them were my fault (fingers crossed I'm not to speak too soon). I'm only buying a car worth 1000 and the difference in cost between fully comp and 3rd party, fire & theft makes it worth thinking about going for the latter as the fully comp is 609 with 250 excess and TPFT 480 with 250 excess. Does anyone know, if I was involved in an accident cause by a 3rd party driver can I claim from their insurance? I remember on my 2nd accident (about 14 years ago before the recent technology) although I got all the details of the registration and the driver he gave me incorrect details and the DVLA never actually found him as the car had been in between owners. However I was put in contact with a type of agency who assist in these cases and I got reimbursed for my car and neither did it affect my insurance. How am I covered 3rd party if I have an accident that's the fault of the 3rd party? Logically I'm thinking that I can claim for my car from their insurance? Any advice appreciated, would you go fully comp or TPFT?""
How much is your car insurance?
Just trying to get an idea of how much everyone pays...all my friends seem to pay less than me. I am 26, female. One speeding ticket and one DUI (in the state where I'm licensed)...both from 7 years ago. No accidents. I live in an urban area, a midwestern city with probably 200,000 people. I have a 2007 suzuki reno, base package, I have not made any insurance claims. The cheapest I've found is progressive at $110/month...I can't use places like The General or Safe Auto because my state doesn't allow it. When I get quotes from big companies, like state farm, the monthly cost is about $200...my coverage is probably fairly standard, if not on the low side, but meets state guidelines.""
""Recently hit by another driver, got estimate for his insurance company. Not sure I should repair for that cost""
My car is a 1994 Lexus ES300 with 125,000+ miles on it. I would say it is in good or fair condition, the leather seats are cracking badly and it has a few scrathes, etc. I'm just wandering if it is in my best interest to repair this car or for it to be totaled out. The estimate for repairs in $3500.00, which could always go up once repairs start for unseen damage. I'm just not sure the car is worth repairing for that amount considering its condition. The damage is to the drivers side rear panel which is now rubbing something when I turn either way or go over any kind of bump in the road. The estimate does not consider repair for that since that could not be seen by looking at the vehicle. They are also saying the paint can't be matched perfectly because of the fading caused by sun and weather over the years. With everything considered my resale value is not good. I did want to sale this car at some point and get newer car.""

Does this letter help explain why insurance is expensive?
This is a letter from Anthem to Sec. Sebelius back on February 11th, almost a month ago. It explains why insurance in California is high and what factors have led to the increase. It seems pretty clear to me and yet the President claims that he has asked for and has yet to receive a cogent response from the insurance company for this increase. Seems pretty cogent to me. Maybe the President is just a slow learner or the fact that he doesn't have any education or experience in business or economics make the concepts difficult for him to grasp. http://www.wellpoint.com/pdf/SebeliusLetter02112010.pdf Notice that they mention that their rates are less than the 'not for profits' and that much of their increase is the result of Medicare patients needing supplementary insurance because Medicare won't cover them. Notice, too, that the cost of insurance is directly associated with the cost of health care. You can't reduce the cost of insurance without reducing the cost of health care. Obama's initiative does nothing to reduce the cost of CARE. Wonder why that is. Could there be an ulterior motive? So what do you think? Do you have any questions? And please don't waste our time. Read the thing before you respond.""

Yesterday I purchased a new auto insurance policy. I was convinced by the rep that I needed an optional medical provision for $5,000 dollars worth of coverage in case of an accident. Will damages to my rental car go to my car insurance if I was not the one driving?
I have terrible luck lately. Two weeks ago I totaled my car (my fault) and I have a rental until tomorrow. Rental is from enterprise and paid for thru my car insurance. Artists on Kickstarter’s New Drip Platform See Potential for Extra Income

In November, Kickstarter announced the launch of Drip, a new online platform that serves to provide funding to creative individuals. Beginning on an invite-only basis with a group of over 60 artists, musicians, writers, filmmakers, podcasters, and other creatives, the site allows these individuals to drum up funding, and asks ordinary people to become arts patrons. For as little as $1 per month, a user can subscribe to the artist of their choice and gain access to exclusive content on Drip. The platform is currently in beta, with plans for a public launch early next year.
While the concept is not new—a strong competitor in this space is Patreon, which officially launched in 2013—Drip is compelling, not in the least since it arrives under the umbrella of one of the best-known crowdfunding websites. Artists already using the platform are optimistic. “Having funds come directly from people who trust my work ethic and vision allows me to spend less days in doubt, and more days creating,” says artist Nic Annette Miller.
But could Drip actually replace a struggling artist’s day job? At the moment, the average returns are modest—in the range of a few hundred dollars a month—but once the site launches to the public, it’s safe to say its overall user base will grow, and so too could artists’ incomes.
Kickstarter, which takes a five-percent cut of the subscription revenue creatives earn (plus credit card processing fees) on Drip, didn’t launch the service from scratch. It was created by record label Ghostly International in 2012, geared toward musicians. Kickstarter bought the platform in 2016, when it was on the verge of folding. Over the past two years Kickstarter has supported Drip’s operations, before replacing its product with a new one, intended to suit a broader range of creatives—and to reflect the company’s values, namely, its Public Benefit Corporation charter.
Kickstarter’s co-founder and chairman Perry Chen acknowledged that there are existing platforms that operate similarly, giving creatives the opportunity to earn profits from subscribers (he cites Flattr and Steady, in addition to Patreon). But Drip, he explained, will find its own niche, engaging those who don’t necessarily consider themselves “serial content creators” (unlike YouTubers and podcasters, who create a steady, often week-after-week stream of content). Over a third of Drip’s first crop of creatives falls under the Art category—including artists like Joshua Citarella, Shantell Martin, and Molly Soda—with others working in Design, Theater, and Food.

Kickstarter does not want to lock creatives into using Drip, should they decide to move onto another comparable platform in the future. “Creatives work really hard to build relationships that kind of fuel their practice, and they own those relationships,” says Cassie Marketos, Kickstarter’s new vice president of community strategy, who will be focusing on Drip. To make good on this, they’ve promised to “port” Drip content to other sites, meaning artists won’t lose their posts and subscriber contacts if they leave the platform.
Something that sets Drip apart from its competition is that creatives who are on the site launch their pages with a limited-time founding membership program (it can last anywhere from seven to 30 days), incentivizing fans to get in on the ground level. Creatives can offer special perks to these early supporters. Painter and illustrator Elizabeth Haidle invited her founding members to a live-drawing livestream and Q&A; Nic Annette Miller offered hers a behind-the-scenes look into her printmaking process, and a print in the mail once the limited-edition series is complete.
Marketos notes that the founding membership period mimics the “urgency and social cred” that’s made Kickstarter campaigns successful: “I think people like knowing they got there early—being designated on the page, and being able to interact uniquely with the creator.”
Beyond the founding membership period, creatives on Drip develop various subscription tiers, with incentives for each. Molly Soda has a $1 per month tier, which gives subscribers access to images and text related to her current projects; a $5 per month tier, which also includes exclusive .gifs and videos; and a $10 per month option, which also includes previews of her work and Twitter shoutouts. (The average Drip subscription is $4 per month, Marketos says.)
Other artists have tiers that ask for a bit more of an investment. Shantell Martin, for example, has a $20 per month tier where subscribers receive an enamel pin and a drawing each month in the mail. (More cash-strapped users might prefer her $10 per month tier, which involves online access to live music recording sessions and conversations with her artistic peers.)
“I think an ideal subscription tier is anything that makes your community feel closer to you,” Marketos says. “You’re asking someone to give a couple bucks, maybe indefinitely, so it just takes time to establish some trust and build that relationship.”
Miller, who’s currently earning $255 per month from 35 subscribers, notes that she’s considering her Drip as a kind of monthly stipend. Meanwhile, she’s writing her subscribers with updates on her work, a beneficial exercise in its own right. “This has been a great challenge to dedicate time into writing and documenting the beginning phases,” she says.
After roughly one month of use, Drip seems to have offered a fairly seamless adjustment for video and internet artist Soda. She’s now earning about $136 a month via 52 subscribers. “Generally everything that I make goes online immediately, or it will eventually,” she tells me. “Kickstarter really stressed that Drip didn’t need to be creating more work for artists. It could be something that supplements what I already do.” Her process, which can involve mining the internet for stock imagery and making videos of herself while dressed in eccentric costumes, is well suited to the site. “I’m updating people on what I’m working on currently or how I make things or just generally more behind-the-scenes things,” she says.

Haidle, who creates lush figurative illustrations, sees Drip as a long game in terms of seeing returns. “I didn’t want the Drip page to detract from other projects I have going on, but I also realized that I had been wanting to offer tutorials and art education-type stuff,” she notes. “I thought a good compromise would be to post three items every Sunday, on a weekly schedule.”
She also keen to use it as a way to find out who her most engaged followers are. “Since I’m doing a lot of long-term projects, I thought it would be a good way to find out who really wants to hear about the release dates of graphic novels, comics, books,” Haidle says. “So this way I can send something straight to their inbox and they aren’t going to miss it.”
While Kickstarter is publicizing the launch of the platform, it’s up to the creatives themselves to get the word out and build up their subscription base—which is best suited to artists who already have an eager online following. (Soda has over 68,000 Instagram followers, for instance; Martin has around 151,000.)
Brooklyn-based artist Sean J Patrick Carney likewise turned to his existing community, through email and social media, when launching his Drip. He’s using the platform for his writing and podcast project Humor and the Abject, which delves into the intersection of comedy and contemporary art; the podcast, which launched in June, features interviews with comedically minded artists like Brian Belott and Casey Jane Ellison.
He’s taken to plugging his Drip page on the podcast, encouraging listeners to subscribe and gain access to bonus episodes and other content, like drawings. “Instead of reading ads for mattresses, subscription food boxes, or fashionable underwear, I get to treat every podcast episode like its own sound sculpture,” he says, “and I create ridiculous satirical sponsorship spots and psychedelic radio theater.”
That’s not to say that there aren’t kinks to work out with the platform. Multiple artists note improvements that Kickstarter may want to implement. First and foremost, there’s currently no way for creatives and subscribers to engage in discussion, or for subscribers to share their feedback.
“Right now it feels a little bit like I’m shouting into an empty void,” Soda says. “I would really would like to see a comment or messaging feature so that I can actually talk to people.” That would allow for a space for critique or to test out content before it goes public.
“There’s a potential for artists and subscribers to be almost like collaborators on the site,” Martin adds.
Other possible improvements: an easier way for subscribers to choose how long they want to support an artist for (rather than the “indefinite” default that current exists), as well as the option for a “pay what you wish” sponsorship.
Marketos notes that new features and bug fixes are in the pipeline ahead of the 2018 public launch, which does not have a hard date yet. “When we go wide in the world, my goal isn’t in terms of how many people want to be on Drip, it’s just that it’s the right tool, and a good tool, for the people who do want to use it, and that we can continue to defend the integrity of the creators,” she explains.
At this early stage, where the majority of contemporary artists on Drip are currently making in the $100–$300 per month range, Drip seems to be poised to offer artists, at the very least, a small stream of extra cash, which can also be a source of encouragement. “Right now, it’s encouraging to see people signing up and to be getting a little bit of ‘walking around money’ each month,” Carney says.
“Overall, the more that we have these kinds of platforms, the better,” Martin offers. “You can give three dollars a month, or even one dollar, and that little bit really helps. You don’t have to be very wealthy—you don’t have to be in this art bubble—to go out and support artists.
