The Hand That Feeds Typesets
Here are the typesets for The Hand That Feeds by @rollercoasterwords
I have put together a few different versions for this fic, all of which can be accessed in this google drive folder. More information about each version can be found below.
In the folder there are three word documents containing the typesets for the full fic, part one, and part two. There are then a pdf for each of these which is imposed and ready to print. The typeset is formatted to be printed on letter size paper in signatures of 24 (6 sheets).
Page Counts:
Full fic - 900
Part one - 504
Part two - 420
If there are any issues with this typeset that I missed, or it doesn't work for your  creation method, let me know and I will see what I can do to fix it :D

My magnum opus, the jewel of my Binderary round-up, the result of four months of hard work (that is to say, a lot of force applied over distance), the project affectionately known as The Motherfuckers (because it was rather unclear if I was going to finish these books or if they were going to be the end of me).
Force over Distance by cleanwhiteroom. It is currently also on AO3.
I was first introduced to this incredible story by a dear friend, who first sold me on actually watching SGU, and then said that they remember this fic since like 2011, which is always a promising sign. I went digging and found out I was in luck - the story was being rewritten and reuploaded on the author's blog. The next two weeks are described by the same friend as "one of the scariest moments in our cohabitation" as I'd spent literally every waking moment injecting the story directly into my eyeballs, and let me tell you, I'd not been doing a lot of sleeping at that time.
Then I gathered up my courage and reached out to CWR re: my burning desire to bind this story. And the rest, well. Let's dig into it, shall we?
This was my first time typesetting 540k words. Considering I tend to prefer larger font sizes for increased legibility, it was immediately obvious that this was going to be a multivolume project. I settled on three, as it's the relationship between three individuals that forms the core of the story.
I also knew I wanted to keep the typeset in black and white, but play around with light and dark a lot. So I did. One of the first design idea I actually had was the way I wanted to handle projected speech. Mental link between Young, Rush and Destiny is THE most vital part of the story, and I wanted to make it immediatly obvious. I also wanted to be able to take one glance at the page and tell how much of the action is actually just two guys staring each other down :) Hence the blackout effect of thoughts being represented as light over darkness.
I also wanted to preserve as much of my reading experience as possible. So I saved all the chapter quotes/summaries in the TOC, and hid the chapter content warnings in the frame of the gate that marks the beginning of each chapter. For most of the chapter the warnings stay the same, so after a while you stop really noticing them, but then you open a new chapter and see that the familiar shape of the words has changed, and get this UH-OH feeling. Which, I think is very much how it works in my design, because when the warnings change there's usually another line of text added.
For flashbacks and dream sequences I switched from italics to a lighter shade of gray. I woudn't say it's more legible per say, but it's in keeping with the overall light/dark theme.
There are instances of people using handwritten notes in the story. I collected more than a dozen of assorted handwriting fonts, with each character having their own "handwriting". So when, for example, someone begins writing in someone else's hand, you immediately know it.
The most insane, labor-intensive part of the typeset, however, was the way I decided to handle the Ancient translations. CWR's gone through the trouble of setting up hover-to-discover for it, which gives you a very different reading experience than, say, having the translations in the endnotes. So, naturally, I said to myself that I want to replicate that, and footnotes just won't do the trick. So. Every instance of Ancient in the text has an underlay of light gray Ancient script. And an OVERLAY of paper vellum with the translation printed in blue. Now, not to toot my own horn too much, but if looks SICK AS FUCK. You also MAYBE SHOULD NOT LIVE LIKE THIS. For the two copies of this work I had to cut up 10 sheets of vellum into strips, and then spent from 20 minutes to an hour per volume tipping the strips in their proper places. I then had to wear kinetic tape on both my hands to help with the joint pain. (It was worth it.)
Now for the title spread. It is also paper vellum that you see as soon as you turn the first page (the half-title), and see it covering the title of the book and author's name. And then you turn it. And the shields sing the matter wave of Destiny through the black. And yeah, I think that's very, very clever of me, actually.
Then, of course, were the endpapers. All 12 of them are unique abstract paintings done on black cardstock by hand with brush pens and correction tape, I scanned a sample of each set for posterity. All of them are my interpretations of characters' midscapes. For volume 1 I went with the fire wind of Rush's thoughts. Volume 2 was for Young, and I went for the reverse blackout poetry effect (because for all the mental talking they do, the unprojected thoughts are opaque to their counterparts) and all the loops, hairpins and blocks he does. Volume 3 is for the combination - Rush's fire wind, changing its color to match the circuitry pattern of Destiny's AI.
The rest, in comparison, is easy. All volumes are stitched with 3 strands of embroidery floss, a combination of black, blue and silvery-gray. The French double-core endbands are sewn in the same color scheme (though with a different shade of blue and gray switched for white for added contrast). The edges are painted and splattered to look like space.
The covers feature my (signature at this point, I guess) half-cloth river pattern, with the base being dark blue linen and the printed parts being Spitzer telescope images of the W51 star forge, Jack-O'-Lantern Nebula and the Eagle Nebula (courtesy of NASA), waxed by hand for added sheen. The spines are foiled in silver with a foil quill.
Each set is 5 pound of solid hand-crafted book, with one set being my personal copy, and the other sent as a gift to the author.
And that's it, folks! This has been an incredible project to work on, and I'm very proud of what I achieved with it.

the process of binding a study in scarlette:
SO. i had a Vision for this fic, right from the start. so many new things i wanted to do and almost no idea how to do it. but let's start from the beginning, shall we?
i usually don't do anywhere NEAR this amount of brainstorming and designing but the fic has so many motifs and details that i knew i wanted to fit in, so i had to draw it all out and piece everything together.
here are a few of my behind-the-scenes brainstorming notes:
Tumblr media
this was the very first brainstorm i did, it was basically me flinging a bunch of cool book stuff i saw other people doing at the wall and seeing what stuck in my brain.
Tumblr media
this was an idea for a cover which incorporated symbols for each of the chapters inside the branches, but i just wasn't fond of the execution of the draft. so i scrapped it, eventually settling on the silhouette cover for the final.
i had big dreams! and not much experience to back it up with ! so after finishing the typeset, i put it aside for a bit and did a couple other binds first.
Tumblr media
this was my second brainstorm, i started to figure out the direction i wanted the illustrations to go in, no longer aimlessly tossing vibes around!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i did a lot of waffling about different versions of the back cover design. here's a couple that i scrapped!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
over the summer, i decided to finally stop procrastinating and printed out the typeset (after making a few revisions to it). it's a Chonk. i pressed it some, which helped, but it definitely still had a lot of swell.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
sewing with red thread.
Tumblr media
endpapers cut, glued, and a glow in the dark paint test.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
built a press...up til this point i'd just been stacking a bunch of thick books on top of my binds, but for this one i needed a lying press to sand my edges, so i finally caved. who needs tools? my edge painted book needs tools :(
Tumblr media Tumblr media
sanding edges with power sander
so. this was my first time doing anything with edges, so i did a little test on a book i already had; it was a bit of a process trying to work out how much i should dilute it, and it took a bit of trial and error. doing the bottom edge first was the right call ^^;; it's the flakiest out of all the edges on the final bind. i'm really happy with the fore edge though, i got a really even and nice coat on it.
Tumblr media
rounding, gluing and (an attempt at) backing
so. it was the day before i was moving. i had run out of time to procrastinate any more. the rounding was quite rushed and i barely backed it at all. there was also the fact that i don't have backing boards and was winging it with absolute unfounded confidence. it still turned out okay though so i got away with it!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
dug out a 5 yen coin from who knows where for the bookmark. didn't have pliers with me yet so i had to close the crimp with a metal water bottle and arm strength. who needs tools right
Tumblr media Tumblr media
endbands. i love sewing endbands, but man, for chonk fics it gets Long. i think they each took like 2-4 hours to do. i briefly considered learning double core endbands for this bind but decided against it as i barely just got a handle on regular ones. discovery: my ambitions have limits!
Tumblr media
this was my finalized cover design. i had planned to do it all with htv, but last minute decided to do the silhouette as a linocut instead. i'd never done one before but i had the materials and the fearlessness that only a beginner (who does not know the limits of fear) can have; i think it turned out good :>
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the final stretch!!!! it was at this point, when i realized that the size i'd carved the linocut at would be too wide for the half binding case i had planned. improvisation time. i decided to switch from a regular case binding to a three piece bradel. i have only done case bindings and stab bindings at this point...and with only mild panic and stubborn hubris to fuel me, i went for it. i had already attached an oxford hollow and cut my boards, but it probably wouldn't make too much of a difference! fuck around and find out!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
cutting the cloth and adhering the htv. the summary on the back was HELL to weed, and some of the letters ended up crooked. i should've just printed it letterpress, but i was running out of patience.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i followed DAS bookbinding's tutorial on youtube of his in-boards three piece bradel and the part where i had to tuck in the spine cloth in between the hollow was definitely the trickiest, but it went okay in the end!
Tumblr media
after attaching the boards and gluing down the endpapers i was finally done!!!! after months and months of the unfinished textblock guilting me from the corner of my room, it's finally finished! fancy pics coming soon!
Tumblr media
i learned SO MUCH from this bind, sanding edges, painting edges, linocuts, multiple colors of htv, oxford hollows, and a whole new style of binding....yeah. it was a ride! thanks for reading to the end!

Free Christmas Carol Typeset
Tumblr media
So I finished up and posted the last chapter of my fic yesterday, and thought I'd get back to doing some typesetting. Thus, here is A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, with the original 1843 illustrations by John Leech. Not imposed, sized for half letter (letter folio). Kept the title page relatively simple. I wanted to do something similar to the original 1843 title page.
Free typeset can be found here:
If you use any of my typesets, feel free to tag me! I love seeing what people make. And if any of these were helpful to you, please consider dropping a like/reblog if you can! You can also follow this blog for any future free typesets. (If there's any typesets you'd like to see for other public domain works, let me know! I'm always looking for suggestions. )

Afterdeath - A Ganqing Fanfic
Author’s Debrief
First off, I feel sooooo pretentious writing this, LOL. But I figure people who don’t care won’t read it, and if they do care, I can only hope they’ll find it mildly interesting.
And so, without further ado, let’s take a peak behind the curtain of this fic!
I first started writing this all the way back in May of 2022. And in the beginning it was very much a way for me to express my own feelings of grief. If Ganyu’s pain in the early chapters felt real, it’s because it is. It’s how I felt, how I sometimes still feel, and how I observed others around me feeling and behaving. The difference is that in Afterdeath, Ganyu gets to do what we in reality cannot. She got to right the wrong in a sense, she got to quench the burning feelings of injustice that so often come hand-in-hand with sudden and unexpected loss.
And that’s part of the beauty of fiction, isn’t it? Sometimes it allows for unreality to feel just a tiny bit real, if only for a while.
I’ve gathered that writing like this might be some kind of psychotherapy? Maybe that’s true. I wouldn’t say that writing this fic helped me overcome my grief. I don’t think grief works like that. It’s part of me now. It always will be. But I think it did help me compartmentalize it, to put it in a space and into words that I can more comfortably handle. So that’s something.
But whatever this fic started out as, it quickly grew to be more than that. And part of that is why I made the choice to post as Anon. I think most people know my writing because of Reversal. And Afterdeath is a whole other beast. Reversal is great, I love it to bits, but it got far more attention that I ever dreamed it would, and I ended up putting a lot of pressure on myself not to disappoint people. And if they were to open Afterdeath expecting more Reversal, they would be VERY disappointed, lol.
But I learned something during this whole writing and posting process: I do not care. Or rather, I am learning to not care. I will write the things I enjoy writing and the things I would want to read myself. Others can read it or not, and that’s okay. I am still happy to share my writing, even if I end up the only one entertained by it. It’ll still be enough.
This fic also has a lot of firsts for me. I have never written something this long. Or with this rating, LMAO! And, if I’m honest, as challenging as it was at times, it was fun to push myself and see what’s possible. I will not claim it’s prefect, or even anywhere close, but It has been something of a confidence booster. And as silly as it feels, I am prodigiously proud of myself for writing—and finishing—this fic. And yes, I fully intend to typeset and bind it for myself because I am that just self indulgent LOL!
I also want to thank everyone who followed along, reading and commenting as I worked on this over the last year. A few people guessed it was me posting very early on, and their support has been instrumental. So THANK YOU! I couldn’t have done it without you.
I am always happy to talk about my fics, or ganqing in general, so if anyone has questions or whatever about anything, my inbox is open.
But now, it’s time to work on some of my other WIPs! Wish me luck lol.

What is Lonely Rose Bindery?
Hi!
If you're reading this, you're probably either interested in fanbinding, or a fic writer trying to ensure I'm not some rando on the internet trying to get your personal information or a scammer planning to illegally sell something. Feel free to message me if you have any concerns that aren't answered below!
I'm TS, but you can also call me Rose. I write fanfic on AO3 here and (previously) Fanfic.net here, blog about diabetes in fandom at @type1diabetesinfandom and @yourfavisdiabetic, and flail about misc fandom stuff on my main @too-short-for-my-own-good. I'm also on Discord @ tooshortformyowngood.
I've been in various fan spaces since the early 2010s, and I'll probably keep at until the day I die! I'm multifandom and multiship. Besides writing, I also draw fan art and make podfics, moodboards, playlists, meta, and headcanons. I've attended local and online cons and been to fan meetups.
And, at the end of 2022, I started fanbinding.
Why do I bind fanfiction?
It's March 29th as I write this, and I've read approximately 2 million words of fanfiction this year. I have over 1600 bookmarks on AO3.
I bind fics primarily to preserve them. I've seen many fics be deleted or locked before I downloaded them. (I'm sure we've all been there.) Keeping a copy on my shelf means I don't have to worry as much about losing a favorite story.
A physical copy makes rereading much easier! I get eye strain easily, and some websites just have horrible formatting.
I get to show a writer that I loved their story enough to HAND BIND it. I've met some amazing people this way!
Traditionally hand-binding fanfic pushes back against the notion that fic isn't "real writing."
What to expect on this blog:
Here, I share some of the fanbinding projects I've done, which includes fic, fan studies, meta, freely-available original fiction, public domain works, comics, and zines. Each book is lovingly crafted to honor its creator/s.
As a proud member of the Renegade Bookbinding Guild @renegadeguild, I'm part of a wonderful community dedicated to celebrating fic writers and preserving fandom's dying gift economy. It's an honor to contribute to this cause, and I love getting the chance to give people a bound copy of their writing/art--it's an amazing feeling to get to hold your own work in your hands!
To Authors & Artists:
To all the talented authors and artists whose works I've bound: consider this an open invitation to reach out to me for an author's copy! It's my small way of saying thank you for the joy (and angst lol) your projects have brought me.
I usually try to contact writers/artists directly, but sometimes it doesn't work. Don't be shy! I want to give you a gift!
I don't share any personal information (I would hope that's obvious, but this IS the internet...), and I encourage people to use a PO Box or a friend's address when being offered a fanbinding. Just make sure the friend or other proxy in question is ok with being sent fanfic!
If you don't want to risk receiving a physical copy, I can share the typeset with you instead! The typeset is the formatted PDF, to make the fic itself look like a traditionally published story. These can be plain or artistic, depending on the project and the style of the typesetter.
If there's artwork that's been made for the fic, please let me know! I look for that but it can be tricky, especially when things aren't linked together.
I do NOT share typesets to anyone outside the Renegade Bookbinding Guild, except the author/artist. Even in Renegade, I only share with established members via personal requests unless the author gives me blanket permission to share with the guild as a whole.
Lonely Rose Bindery operates on a NON-PROFIT basis.
Please note that while I pour my heart and soul into each project, I DO NOT accept commissions! I am a hobbyist driven by a deep, deeeeep love for fanfic. I bind purely for the joy of crafting, and the preservation of stories that mean the world to me.
If you are not the author or artist who worked on a specific fic, do NOT request a copy! You are welcome to ask questions and talk about the craft. My askbox is open, and reblogs are turned on.
Message me if you...
are an author/artist who wants to request multiple copies (i.e. for friends or family, or different editions)
kindly want to help with shipping costs (because international shipping is fucking expensive)
have specific colors or themes in mind for your fic
I will not take requests for specific materials, nor accept payment for any materials used.
Lonely Rose Bindery is not just about preserving fanfiction; it's about celebrating the creativity and community of fandom. With each project, I try to honor the stories and art that I love and to promote a gift economy against the rise of consumerism that has recently plagued multiple fandoms.
I look forward to sharing more fanbinds and continuing to improve my bookbinding skills. I never knew how many ways you can make a book until I started this!
Remember, my askbox is always open, so feel free to reach out with any questions, suggestions, or just to say hello. Happy reading!

MidnightToMoscow FanFiction Policies
As things start to gain traction and a bit of popularity I just want to put my policies in place so I’ve set some expectations and boundaries. Please note that opinions change and I have the right to update this if things change. At the end of the day, this boils down to consent for me, I want to be able to see where my work is going and give consent to things I want to be a part of. This is also VERY premature as nothing has happened with any of my works as of yet, but I would rather have something in place than have to react to a situation quickly.
Binding: As of right now, I would like to treat this on a case-by-case basis. So much has happened in the bookbinding and fandom community (typesets being taken from public drives, copies of hand-bound books being sold for thousands of dollars, fics being printed through websites and sold for profit) that, for now, I would like to be contacted by both reader and binder. I am easily reachable (TikTok, Instagram, Tumblr, Ao3 and FF.net are always open) so please, if you’d like any of my fics bound, reach out and ask. I’m also relatively active within the binding community and can point you in the direction of ethical binders I would feel comfortable working with.
Fanart (commissions) UPDATED 12/16/23: Go for it!! Honestly just tag me or send it to me so I can see how beautiful it is. Artists are important, fanfiction makes people feel things and they want to show it so go for it.
Downloads/epubs: Please, if you are going to download my work, do it directly from ao3. I am honoured that you want to read my work offline or enjoy it on an eReader etc. To me, and this is my own personal opinion, the best part about being an author within the FanFiction community is interacting with your readers, seeing comments in real-time, hits, kudos, likes etc. If you do decide to download my work from somewhere other than ao3 (I know some creators house folders on Discord or within their bios as they have created covers for fics and want to share them), please do not forget to come back and interact! Leave a kudos or comment on where you’re coming from and how you discovered my fic. At the end of the day, and this is purely selfish, I just want to chat and see where my work is going.
Platforms: I only house my works on ao3 and FF.net, if you see my work anywhere but those two websites, please let me know as that is not me.
Goodreads/Storygraph and other non-personal reading trackers: Please, do not add my work to these websites. I have had The Dangers of Falling Apart removed and would like all of my work to stay off of it. This is my own personal opinion, but I do not want my work to be rated, I do this out of joy and find ratings to take the joy from it.
Fics of fics and transformative works: I do not mind people making fics of my fics, podfics, playlists, moodboards, social posts or anything in that vein of my work. I just ask that you please tag me or give me credit. I absolutely LOVE seeing everything and anything that people make and it brings me so much joy that someone would be inspired by something I’ve created.
And finally! If you have any questions do NOT hesitate to ask. I love to chat! Send me a DM, you can find me pretty much everywhere as MidnightToMoscow (Instagram, TikTok, Tumblr, ao3).

I reserve the right to authorize, prohibit or control the creation of any type of derivative work based on any of my preexisting works, including, but not limited to, reproductions, adaptations, translations, modifications, and any other processes resulting in the transformation of my preexisting works into any form of media.
Please understand that the work I put out is created in my own time and of my own free will, and is done for nothing other than my own enjoyment and those of the people who encounter them. I do not make any profit from my fics, be it in the form of direct/indirect payment to myself or other people.
GENERAL POLICIES
- Please do not put anything involving/inspired by my fics behind a paywall or put them up for sale or auction or any other processes which involve the exchange of currency. If you would like to include my fic for a charity drive, please do not assume you have express permission to do so just because it's "your copy". I as the author reserve the right to my intellectual property.
- If you want access to my work beyond reading it on any platform on which I have made them available, the least I would expect is that you put in the time and effort to know and respect me as an actual person. ALWAYS ASK ME FIRST.
BINDING AND TYPESETTING
- I do not allow any binding or typesetting any of my fics unless it's by someone I have a personal relationship with, online or offline. I would like for you to let me know first that you are planning to MAKE a bind or typset of my fic and I would appreciate a copy (of the typeset at the very least). Please do not outsource binders or typesetters. I do not allow commissions of my fics.
MERCHANDISE
- If you're a hobbyist/artist looking to make something based on my fic, please let me know first before doing so. Please do not sell it.
- I do not allow anyone to SELL, DONATE to later be sold, PUT UP FOR AUCTION or any other process involving an exchange of currency any sort of merchandise based on my fic.
FANART
- Any artist is welcome to create fanart based on my fics. I would love to see it as well. However, please do not sell/put up for auction/ask for donations for fanart based on my fics.
- Please do not commission fanart based on my fics.
PODFIC/AUDIOBOOKS
- Please ask me first if you would like to create a podfic or an audiobook of any of my fics.
- Please let me know of any editing notes or changes that need to be made. Do not change anything without permission.
COLLECTIONS
- Non-fest works added to any collection will always be subject to my approval. As of the moment, I do not approve any of my non-fest fics being added to collections unless it's by someone I have a personal relationship with. Please use the bookmark feature and be reminded that I can see the notes.
TRANSLATIONS
- Please ask me for permission before putting up any translations of my fics. I generally allow them, provided the translator has evidence of prior fic translation work with zero issues. I would also be asking for the link and for it to be properly labelled as a translation of my fic.
GOODREADS
- Please do not put up any reviews of my fics outside the platforms on which I have made them available. I will report them.
Latest version APRIL 18, 2023. My DM's are open. Further inquiries here: [email protected]

Not ONLY this, but people are also creating typeset epub files and selling those too. 🙄
Fanfiction is based on a gift economy. We work for FREE to provide you content for FREE which you are then FREE to read. You can also download for FREE and then bind for PERSONAL use or create an epub for PERSONAL use via AO3.
Selling these bind copies and epubs online is bullshit. You don't get to make money on what the authors' wrote knowingly for FREE and put hundreds of hours into. Nope.
We're protected by AO3 in regards to the creation of derivative works, but that doesn't mean that if someone selling for-profit binds that they can't try to go after us. And believe me, there are entire law firms built around copyright who go looking for cases online.
So here's my stance as a fic author:
✔️binding for personal use
✔️ not necessary, but asking an author's permission to bind *mostly because, selfishly, I want to see the result, but it's also nice to know and be asked.
✔️Sharing typesets for free for those personal binds
❌ binding for profit
❌ selling typesets of fanfics and epubs online either on Etsy or behind a paywall like Patreon (now the epub thing is becoming a big problem. *I just saw Divine Rivals, in full, on Etsy the other day from a seller who was clearly not Rebecca Ross. Obviously reported their dumb ass.)
So let's remember, fanfic is a gift to the fandom, and the more people exploit it by being complete assholes, the more you're going to see it disppear.
Tumblr media
Fellas, fellas
Why on earth are you BUYING PHYSICAL BOOKBOUND COPIES OF FANFICTION????
ACTUALLY WHY ARE YOU EVEN BOOKBINDING FANFICTION TO SELL?!?!?!
IF ANY OF YOU DO EITHER OF THESE THINGS, GET OUT!! I AM NEVER SPEAKING TO YOU AGAIN.
In all seriousness though, authors on AO3 have begun to pull their works off of the site to avoid getting sued by people stealing their works to make a pretty bound book for profit. Entire accounts could be shut down as well.
Listen, I’m all for saving favorite works by printing them out and putting them in a binder, or learning how to make a fancy book for a fanfic, but making books with actual fanfiction in it to sell is where I draw the line.
Literally the entire point of AO3 is that you can read it FOR FREE.
It is DISRESPECTFUL for people to make money off of hardbound copies because guess what, the original creators of these fics get nothing. We are literally only writing fanfiction for our own pleasure.
Buying and selling book-bound fanfiction is also ILLEGAL YOU DUMB SHITS. It’s an immediate violation of copyright law. The original fan work will get erased from the internet.
Fanfiction is already a legal grey zone since they are works being written about are protected by copyright. Copyright holders can in fact go after writers as well as the person who sold the fanfiction.
This also goes for people who steal fanart and, claim it as theirs, and put a price on it.
Don’t make it worse.
Bookbinding fanfiction for profit is literally ruining things for everyone. DON’T.

Aaron Hotchner x Gender Neutral Reader a joyful future fic
a/n: it's loving haley hotchner hours!! hope you enjoy :) as always, let me know what you think!
words: 1.3k warnings: none
summary: “what is that unforgettable line?” - samuel beckett. au!november 2008
masterlist | a joyful future masterlist | ajf faq | taglist | what do you want to see next?
“Has Aaron ever told you how we met?”
“I know you two met in high school, but that’s about the extent of it.”
Haley laughs and puts her drink down. “You’re in for a real treat, then. Come with me.”
It’s one of those afternoons in which Aaron’s taken Jack to go have some fun for a little while, leaving you and Haley at the house. It’s been nice to rest while your shoulder slowly knits together again, nice to chat and channel surf. Really, it’s been nice to have a friend at all.
She leads you to the garage, where built-ins support stacked boxes all the way to the rafters. There’s so much stuff. A few boxes are on the floor, packed with a few George Washington University sweatshirts, a law textbook, and a few framed photos of Jack.
You’d hazard a guess that’s close to the last box Aaron has here.
Haley bypasses it in favor of a more aged box on the back. She becomes you over and unearths it, opening it. You are by no means prepared for what awaits you.
The box is full of faded framed photos and stacked scrapbooks, some with Haley’s handwriting on the front and others with typeset. Haley pulls one scrapbook in particular, the pages warped with age and stuffed with various momentos.
“This is the first one I ever made, starting the spring of my freshman year of high school. Aaron shows up…” She flips through the pages. They crackle under her fingers. “...here.”
She turns the book and you take it in your hand, balancing the bottom while she bears the weight. As always, her thoughtful conscientiousness almost brings a smile to your face.
In the scrapbook, little polaroids litter one side, while the other has a playbill cover. A “Players” page is pasted in, with two names left uncovered by doodles.
Haley Renee Brooks
Aaron Hotchner
One of the photos catches your eye. “Is that…?”
“Aaron in tights and a pirate hat? Yes.”
This is gold.
Tumblr media
You bring the book closer to you and flip through it carefully with Haley’s help, finding more evidence of Aaron’s brief stint as a thespian. He’s undeniably adorable as a teenager. He looks different, of course, but between the hair and the eyes -
And that smile
You recognize the man you’ve come to know.
Haley, of course, is also adorable. The mid-eighties look cute on her. She looks mostly the same as she does now. Her jawline is more defined, the beginnings of smile lines starting to form around her eyes and mouth, but those are only indicators of the twenty-five years between the photo and the woman before you.
“If you tell him I showed you this, no I didn’t.”
You laugh, passing the book back to her. “Scout’s Honor. Total silence. I will, however, require copies of these for blackmail purposes.”
She rolls her eyes. “Over my dead body, darling.”
You look around for a moment before asking. “So… what exactly does that have to do with how you met?”
“I prefer the way he tells it,” she says, “because when I tell it I look like I’m padding my ego, but…”
Her blue eyes wander as she tells you about the boy who landed in the wrong classroom on August 20th, 1985 at 2:13pm, as if she’s seeing it as she’s telling the story. Maybe she is.
The nameless senior was tall, lanky, and looked rather brittle. He hadn’t grown into his limbs yet and there’s a hawkish look in his eye. He met Haley’s curious gaze. She smiled at him.
It’s only a moment before the boy leaves for the right classroom.
“He had the building number wrong. It’s no surprise, really. Our schedules were copied by hand, as copy machines were expensive. The guidance counselor’s handwriting was nearly illegible, but it sealed our fates.”
She goes on to tell you that the boy came back the next day, enrolled in the class for the duration of the semester.
“He then, bravely, became the worst third pirate in the history of theatre just to impress me.” She pauses, a little pensive. “He told me a couple of years ago that the day came into the wrong classroom was the same day he knew he was going to marry me.”
The admission brings a flush to her cheeks and a fond smile to her lips. You can see the affection written all over her as she recalls the memory. She shakes her head and puts the scrapbook back, closing the box and leading you out of the garage.
“We started dating when the show closed. It was silly, of course, and very high school, as relationships went. We only kept going because he was so close for college - just over the bridge into the district.”
You follow her back into the house. “Did you guys ever break up?”
She snorts. “All the time.”
That makes you laugh. You can hardly picture it.
“I’m sure you can imagine how rational and reasonable I was at sixteen,” she says, her voice full of jest. “I put him through hell, but Aaron was always impossibly patient with me, even and especially when I didn’t deserve it.”
“Really?”
“Really. I know he’s probably...not that way at work, but even through all of this -” she gestures vaguely to the air around you and you know she means the divorce. “- he’s always been that way with me.”
You’ve seen Hotch at home now more than a few times and it’s been illuminating to see the changes in him as he crosses the threshold. Reconciling those differences in him, knowing Haley better, it all paints a layered, detailed portrait of someone you already care about.
Haley catches your attention again when she speaks. “I’m glad he has people watching out for him.” There’s a strange, almost sad, smile on her face. “He gets lonely.”
+++
When Aaron pulls up in the driveway, you and Haley are stuck watching whatever movie you landed on when you got to talking, too attached to give it up.
The door opens and Aaron sets Jack on his feet, helping him with the tiny zipper on his coat before attending to his own.
“How was your day, boys?” Haley gets up and goes to the kitchen, where you know a little tupperware full of cut fruit waits for Jack.
You offer him a little wave as he catches sight of you and processes your presence. Hey.
“Well,” he says. “How was your day, Jack? Want to tell Mom about it?”
The pass-off is funny to you, but you suspect Aaron doesn’t want to oversell it.
“So fun!” He runs and jumps onto the couch as Haley rounds the corner.
Her eyes are bright, animated, when she asks, “What did you and Daddy do?” She sits next to her son, her feet pulled under her as she leans on the back of the couch.
As Jack relays the events of the afternoon, there’s an odd moment when Aaron catches himself. He reaches down to ruffle Haley’s hair, but freezes with his hand outstretched. You can see the wheels turning in his head and you almost feel bad for catching him at all.
HIs hand closes and he shoves it into his pocket before he sits down in the armchair beside your end of the couch with a sigh. You pretend to be completely focused on Jack, so as to not embarrass him.
“So,” he asks you. You turn. “How was your day?”
There’s a moment where you share a little look, maybe even a laugh.
“Good. My day was good.”
“Good.”

What are your favorite chinese webnovels? What are some of the differences youve noticed between cnovels and other types of novels?
That second question is really, REALLY interesting, and I really want to answer it well, and I am REALLY sure I’m going to do a bad job of answering it, so let me just noodle about that first question for a minute while I try to think XD
I went through some of my TOP-top favorite novels in more detail yesterday, but generally speaking, mxtx and meatbun are both at the top of the pack. They’re really good at writing compelling main characters and balancing piles of angst with plenty of humor and pulling everything together into a very satisfying ending (which is something I don’t alwaysssss see, even in some of the novels I really like). After them, The Disabled Tyrant’s Pet Palm Fish (transmigration, ancient chinese prince falls in love with pet fish) and Golden Stage (ancient chinese gay arranged marriage between bitter enemies(?)) are two novels that I love a lot, which both have very cute romances and go a bit lighter on the main character suffering front, and which I broadly recommend to anyone who’s interested in the genre. They didn’t end stick the landing QUITE as hard as an svsss or tgcf, but they still were very nice.
Then, let me see. I’m trying to remember which books I’ve read in the last year, and am doing a terrible job, haha. I will say that a book I enjoyed for like... eighty percent of it and then the ending let me down terribly was The Dreamer In The Spring Boudoir (modern day career woman transmigrates into barely-fantasy ancient china novel as the disliked primary wife of a nobleman), which is also the only straight webnovel I’ve read so far. The main character and romance were delightful, but that ending... haha, wow, I felt betrayed. But I did like the first half very much!! I’m idly contemplating a deliberately-partial reread. Then I’m currently like two chapters away from catching up with the current translation of The Wife Is First (ancient chinese prince lives out time travel fixit fic, determined to treat his spouse better this time around). I’m also catching up on Heroic Death System (transmigration, across MANY universes, where the goal is to die heroically in each one, and also maybeeeee to find his boyfriend in each one. this shit gets fucking bananas. in one of them, he emotionally seduces his boyfriend while he’s a dolphin. in another one, he’s a sentient mushroom. i’m in the middle of a section titled ‘I Am An Evil Pen’. yes, like a writing utensil type of pen. this is the weirdest book I’ve read so far). Oh, and Thousand Autumns (righteous sect leader gets sabotaged and loses a fight, wakes up blind and amnesiac, demonic sect leader is like ‘lol i bet i can turn him evil’ and accidentally catches feelings along the way).
What else... I’m keeping up with (but behind on) some others. First, there’s How To Survive As A Villain (modern terminally ill CEO transmigrates into stallion novel, wakes up as villain, accidentally seduces hero). Then, we’ve got Transmigrating Into The Body Of The Heartthrob’s Cannon Fodder Childhood Friend (only modern webnovel I’ve read, young man transmigrates into beginning of gratuitous whump book, back in high school, and is determined to protect the protagonist from all the canonical suffering). Then there’s Pulling Together A Villain Reformation Strategy (guy transmigrates into story as the hero’s childhood friend who will eventually become his enemy and get killed, successfully acts out his part and dies, completely fails to realize he’s broken his friend’s heart in the process... and then wakes up in another character’s body). And then there’s The Villain’s White Lotus Halo (a transmigrator keeps bouncing from universe to universe as a cannon fodder villain, who gets like half a line before being killed. he tries to purchase an upgrade package so he can be a COOL villain instead, but accidentally gets sold a ‘white lotus halo’ package instead, so that no matter what he does, everyone is just DEEPLY moved by his appearance and is positive he did nothing wrong). All of those are EXTREMELY delightful. You may notice a running transmigration theme, which....... yeah, I think there are a TON of delightful stories in the webnovel scene that deal with this genre, which seem so rare in English language media.
Which makes a good transition point to what’s different about the cnovel scene! I’ve seen hardly any transmigration stories in English, and I’ve got a couple go-to examples for when I’m trying to explain it, but like. Only a couple. Which is such a shame! Like, there’s the default idea of ‘I was reading this book and then I woke up inside the book!!’ but it’s clearly such an established genre that people are playing with it in all kinds of interesting ways, like in The Villain’s White Lotus Halo or Heroic Death System setups. It’s kind of wild to me, because it seems like such a gimme for a nice easy story structure? Whatever kind of world you want to present, there’s no need to introduce it to the reader from the ground up, or find a good way to hook them in. Either the main character read the book in question and can explain the premise and why we should care in pov, or the main character is new to the universe too, and trying to find their own footing. I enjoy it a lot! I’ve sampled transmigration books that didn’t grab me, but I’ve sampled way more that did.
And then, the one semi-technical answer I thought of to this question was the way that these novels tend to handle pov. It’s not a hard-and-fast rule that regular novels are restricted to one pov, or that pov can only change at hard breaks in the story, but if I saw a bog-standard american novel glide from pov to pov the way these novels regularly do, I would tend to wonder if it was sloppiness or a mistake, or I would grump to myself about how I don’t like omniscient third person pov. And I still don’t know exactly what I think about this, or why it’s different in here, but I’m pretty sure I like it a lot, especially for stories where the romance tends to play a large part :V
I used to read a lot of Books About Writing, and read plenty of stuff about why you don’t DO this, but.... I like it! In dtppf, Jing-wang can’t talk, and when Li Yu is a fish, he can’t talk, and drifting from one of their perspectives to the other gives me lots of useful information about how they’re both feeling. Could that be conveyed through restricted pov? Maybe! But I’m typesetting the svsss extras right now, and I’m in the bing-ge vs bing-mei section, and we get a few brief flashes of bing-ge’s thoughts, and it’s so NICE. It’s information I would not have otherwise received, because Shen Qingqiu sure wasn’t going to notice it. But early in the story, that pov was withheld from me, which also made sense (or hua cheng’s pov was withheld from me FOREVER, which makes me so sad ;u;). There don’t seem to be any hard and fast rules, which makes me really nervous about writing fic and trying to match the style, but I do like it a lot!
And I’m definitely not able to articulate this in the way that I would like to, or speak with any real authority (I’m not that widely read in the cnovel scene, and i’m not very genre-adventurous in english), but there’s something about the role that the romances play in these stories that’s different from what I’m used to expecting, and it’s VERY tasty to me. I only rarely read romance novels, because I’m not often interested in the romance as a primary plot driver, but the romances in these books play a more substantial role than I’m used to expecting. And I’m into it! It’s a balance closer to what I’d expect from, like, a shippy longform fanfic. Which covers a lot of ground and is NOT a precise measure, but there’s more emotional weight given to the romance than I would expect, but without the romance carrying ALL of the emotional weight, and it strikes a perfect balance for me in a way I’m not used to encountering. Now, some of this could definitely be due to me not finding the right authors, or right subgenres, or whatever. But in the genres I inhabit, it’s a subtle difference, but one I find compelling.
Oh, one last thing. The cultural differences, duh :P I’m only familiar with things like, say, ancient chinese court etiquette through a lens of fan-translated novels like these, and I didn’t grow up steeped in the culture in a way I’m used to the trappings of something like medieval european courts. But there’s a distinct flavor to the social dynamics of these novels, from the formal levels down to the casual, and I know it’s super intricate and detailed and that authors play with differing degrees of historical accuracy vs fictional fun, and I wish I was better equipped to speak to the nature of any of this. But I find it really compelling! I recognize that it’s only new to ME because I didn’t seek out chinese media before now. And, the point that I originally wanted to get to before I got super distracted: the flirting. The flirting and teasing are a very different flavor from what I would expect in most english language media, and I love it, even if I can’t speak to how much of that is purely cultural, and how much of it is like... the conventions of How Fiction Is Written varying by culture, if that makes sense. I adore seeing what flirting and affection and indulgence and attentiveness look like in different settings, and these books, with their heavy romantic focus, absolutely deliver.

translation commmissions
https://ko-fi.com/yunyu
I am going to experiment with opening commissions to translate from Chinese to English, so to start off my prices are low, low, low! What a deal for you.
$1CAD per 100 Chinese characters, rounded to nearest 100, if written
$2CAD per image, within reason; I am thinking of the amount of text on a typical comic page or advertisement as my basis. Image is more expensive because I may have to decipher handwriting, fonts, etc. If it is a super long image or an image FULL of text then maybe more. This does not include typesetting!
That’s right, this is all in maple bucks, which is way less than freedom bucks or brexit bills or union notes, and is roughly the same as dollarydoos.
The translation doesn’t have to be fandom stuff! It can be anything. Maybe you saw a Chinese advertisement and you just wanna know what it says. You can check my “my translation” tag for lots of examples of my translations.
Important: you can do whatever you want with my translation if and only if you either created the original text or you have the permission of the person who created the original text. Otherwise, my translation is for your personal, private use only!
I shouldn’t need to say this but this translation service is not suitable for anything legal!!! If you need a certified translation of a document then you need to find someone else. You don’t even know my name.
Okay let’s see if anybody wants this. ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ Also if you just want to send me a few dollars because you like my fic or whatever, you can do that through the same link.
I’m still gonna do my free translations like usual, btw, I was just thinking if I had a few dollars, then I could spend a few dollars on other people’s Patreons and stuff. And this is like the only monetizable skill I have.

Spork Haven chapter 23: salt fucking peter
welcome to spork haven, where I spork the EL James fic you’ve never heard of
previous chapter | next chapter | contents
previously on Spork Haven:
actor!Edward got an outlandish fucking award and became Best Actor!Edward! hotel maid murder witness cello prodigy orphaned ““cajun”” heiress!Bella was his date to the awards show! Ed looked into Emmett’s dark burning eyes and had a Moment! Bella felt dizzy and then went missing! will the Volturi mafia succeed in murdering her? let’s hope so stick around and find out!
warning: this chapter is incredibly long. please check the tags for content warnings—there are a lot! it’s eventful, though, so we’ll give it a pass. but settle in and make yourself comfortable. maybe go get a drink or something. I know I needed a drink after I read this garbage.
chapter 23 opens with Edward attempting to process the fact that Bella has disappeared. he does this in what I have to admit is a pretty seamless fusion of el james’s and stephenie meyer’s trademark styles (negative space here preserved for authenticity):
Tumblr media
wow. eat your heart out, New Moon.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
once we’ve experienced that bit of totally original typesetting magic, Edward leaps into action!
just kidding. he’s “totally fucking immobilized.” paralyzed with fear, he “stifles a sob” and toys with whether to “wail, scream, and tear his hair out with impotence”
Tumblr media
luckily, he’s very good at giving himself pep talks:
Tumblr media
this bracing self-administered kick in the pants unfreezes him, allowing him to summon the mental faculties to go get Emmett.
Emmett clears the ladies’ room and calls for backup. He and Edward search the restroom and are joined by a rando Local security guard as they discover—gasp!—a secret second exit to the bathroom (shoutout to the phoenix airport womens’ room, amirite?) leading into a service tunnel.
the Local security guard informs them that the tunnel leads to an alley, but the alley’s only exit is onto Hollywood Boulevard. you know, the street currently clogged with limos, paparazzi, cameras, and fans. idk about y’all but I’m starting to think this kidnap attempt may have been just a tad poorly conceived. why kidnap her at all? they had ample time to kill her, dump her body in the service tunnel, and make their escape unencumbered.
as Ed, Emmett, and Local race down the service tunnel, Emmett radios for Jasper to go around and cut the Bad Guys off in the alley. Edward is the slowest of the bunch
Tumblr media
so he quickly falls behind the other two.
Tumblr media
he’s trying to catch up when—wait! what’s that on the ground? something...sparkly?
that’s right: he pauses in chasing after Bella and her kidnapper in order to notice “six thousand dollars’ worth of earring” lying on the ground.
then he stops and picks it up.
Tumblr media
now, I know what you’re thinking, guys—is he seriously stopping to pick up a lost earring when Bella’s life is in danger?—but keep in mind, these earrings were twelve thousand dollars. also, Edward loves earrings! they make him horny! what else is he supposed to suck on at Bella’s funeral?
Tumblr media
I mean, yeah, if your worst fear was that Bella might lose an earring.
Tumblr media
what indeed, Edward. what indeed.
imagine for a second that you’re Emmett in this fic. you’re a law enforcement professional racing to protect your charge’s life, bellowing into your walkie for backup, preparing to apprehend an armed and dangerous suspect in an area full of innocent civilians...when suddenly, from somewhere far behind you in the dingy gloom of the service tunnel, you hear the sniveling, British-accented voice of the bitchass manchild celebrity who’s tagging along:
“I’vE fOuNd hEr eArRiNg!”
Tumblr media
jesus.
still ahead of Eddie boy, Emmett and Local burst out into the alley, guns drawn. Edward hears gunfire and is terrified for Bella as he finally catches up and arrives at the scene.
this is about where erika’s writing gets...incredibly confusing. and not in a POV, “we’re in the character’s head experiencing the chaos with him in real time” way. more like in a “several dozen drunk blind amputees playing Twister” way. this is my cute way of saying “it’s bad” and “I had to read it four times before it began to make sense.”
in the alley, all is chaos. a gun has just gone off
Tumblr media
I’m sorry. salt...peter? saltpeter? did someone shoot off a Ye Olde Civil War Musket? I know fuckall about firearms and even I know they phased that shit out in the fucking 1880s.
and while we’re here, fun trivia fact about saltpeter: in Olden Times, people would ingest saltpeter in order to nuke their sex drives. silly Olden Times! if it’s a bonerkiller you’re after, all you have to do is read this fic!
ok, back to the alley. security are cordoning it off, keeping the “fucking jackal” paparazzi at bay (already?)
the LAPD are arriving (already??)
but perhaps most interestingly,
Tumblr media Tumblr media
real quick before we get into whose body it is, why we’re sexually objectifying it, and what it’s oozing, I just wanna draw your attention to the construction of that sentence. the artistry, if you will. below, I have replaced some of the nouns so that we may all appreciate the sheer poetry of the syntax:
“there’s a fucking meatball lying prone on the floor, all covered with cheese, a dark cloud oozing under the meatball.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
sitting a few feet away from the Skirt & Heels Body™ is Jasper, cradling the unconscious Bella. you could be forgiven for thinking that first body (you know, the oozing one) was Bella’s, because that’s what the narration wants you to think. the effect is somehow both enhanced and ruined by the fact that Bella’s actual body is mentioned in the next sentence. erika really tried to have her suspense cake and eat it too, with the result that by the time I finished reading this paragraph, I had absolutely no idea how many bodies there were or who they belonged to, which ones had on a skirt and heels, which ones were oozing, and where.
Tumblr media
another excerpt I should probably share is the paragraph where we describe Edward reacting to this tragic pietà.
Tumblr media
here’s our text, raw and unedited:
Tumblr media
I can’t even begin to list all the ways this paragraph makes me uncomfortable, so I won’t attempt to.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
anyway. remember how in the last chapter, there was an incredibly gay bit where Edward looked into Emmett’s dark, burning eyes? fasten your seatbelts because we’re about to blow that bit out of the water.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
luminous hazel eyes
filled with
𝓈𝑜𝓂𝑒 𝑒𝓂𝑜𝓉𝒾𝑜𝓃 𝐼 𝒹𝑜𝓃'𝓉 𝓌𝒶𝓃𝓉 𝓉𝑜 𝓃𝒶𝓂𝑒
Tumblr media
the next sentence tries to take us back into heterosexual territory with
Tumblr media
are we meant to understand that Jasper’s luminous hazel eyes are saying “don’t you just wish it was you getting to cradle Bella’s unconscious, injured body?” yes, that is exactly what we’re meant to understand. this attitude continues as Bella is loaded into an ambulance. at first, Jasper tries to stop Edward from coming, then the paramedic says they can both come but only if they sit on opposite sides of the ambulance like kindergarteners in Time Out.
Tumblr media
l o n g i n g l y
the paramedics also checked the other body (you know, the oozing skirt and heels body) and Edward made a startling observation:
Tumblr media
though oozing, the mystery person is still alive, and a second ambulance hauls off
Tumblr media
and here I was thinking all this story needed to make it complete was some veiled transphobia! what a fun new direction for erika.
once at the hospital, Ed is banished to the waiting room with Emmett, Jasper, and Taylor. the doctors won’t let him see Bella, even when he tells them he’s her fiancé.
hmm. is it just me or is there a movie about this exact scenario?
Tumblr media
yep, there are at least two movies about this exact scenario.
after the “fiancé” thing, Edward picks up on some bad vibes from Jasper
Tumblr media
interesting. can you feel MY animosity hit you like a brick fucking wall? I guess it’s more of a brick fucking skyscraper at this point.
things we learn at the hospital:
Bella was roofied! so if you voted “poisoned” in the poll, I’m gonna give you this one. congrats on your victory.
Bella is fine now
Jasper shot the mysterious kidnapper in the chest.
Tumblr media
that’s right, Jasper is the cause of all the oozing. well done, Jasper. good luminous hazel eye.
finally, Bella wakes up and asks to see Edward. He goes back to see her
and
she
dumps his ass.
not for any Sane People reasons, of course. having decided she’s “too dangerous to be around,” she breaks up with him in a scene straight out of New Moon, complete with “eyes full of tortured pain” and dialogue like
“You are too precious to me. Please. Go.”
Edward spends the whole scene in panicked denial, to the point where he’s practically gaslighting Bella, telling her she’s just been through a traumatic ordeal and she can’t possibly mean what she’s saying.
then he interrupts her mid-breakup
to fucking propose.
Tumblr media
🤣🤣🤣 READ THE ROOM, BUDDY. Bella is resolute for the first time in her doormat life, turns down the proposal, and firmly breaks things off with Edward. he returns her earring (you remember, the six thousand dollar earring we paused in the middle of the climactic chase scene to pick up), “inhales her fragrant hair for the last time,” and leaves.
and with that, the chapter is FINALLY over.
Tumblr media
