i did not Adore any of these comics from the library. i sort of enjoyed Night of the Ghoul, a one-volume TPB by Scott Snyder and Francesco Francavilla. i think ive blogged about this before but every once in a while i'll get a bee in my bonnet to read some horror comics even though i am a giant baby about horror movies.

Night of the Ghoul is about how you can't save your dad from PTSD but also about a lost horror film and also about the extremely dad behavior of tracking down every scrap of info about an auteur. there's also a monster.

the subtle art changes from present day to the remains of the film to the non-film flashbacks are well done, imo. the cover screams mignola but the inside pages are really fun pulp nonsense. i love a piece of genre writing that rolls around and delights in being a piece of genre writing.

im doing my level best not to get sucked into tiktok but i DO love watching this lady revive antique nail polish and look for dupes for shades from like the 20s. she found an almost exact dupe for a shade produced during wwii which is crazy insane to me!!!

The Asphalt Jungle (1950, dir. Huston), it's a very painterly heist noir. i even like Sterling Hayden in one of the more prominent roles, even though i think he generally has the appeal of undercooked dough.

much like Fritz Lang's M, it presents the criminal element of the city as its own class with its own reputation and reference systems. it got in some trouble with the censors for having a VERY clearly laid out heist plan and execution. it's also got the babiest Marilyn Monroe in one of her earliest roles

this was such a gloriously messy movie. everyone is such a fucking mess. this woman only known as Doll is heartbreakingly, head over heels in love with Sterling Hayden's character. she's a little flighty and bumbling and silly, but determined! they're constantly orbiting the gravitational weight of her desire for this man and desire for a real life with this man. and that's just one subplot! she has maybe five minutes total screentime! she should have gotten a supporting actress oscar!!! everyone acted their fucking hearts out and it was so much fun to watch!

monument valley is in the netflix games library this month (i don't actually know what their liscencing agreements would even look like, they and the studios they worked with were very tightlipped about that when they were rolling this out three years ago) but i assume it's going to be on the service for a while. i have never played this game, which makes me feel a little bit like a bad gamer. you can tell it's ten years old from some of the color and texture choices, but WOW did literally everyone take inspiration from this game.

this is the platonic ideal of a phone game. i get why everyone went insane about it and there was a brief boom of geometry-based puzzle mobile games. it is MUCH much harder now to get people to pay money to play a game that has a planned endpoint and planned number of levels, so netflix is a good home for it.

i was often frustrated but always delighted. the level below involves making something happening that made me genuinely gasp out loud in glee. well worth the annoyance of downloading the netflix app and scrolling through the poorly labeled and poorly sorted carousel of games.

update on the Phantom Menace fabric: pinked the raw edges and threw it in the laundry again with a very large quantity of vinegar. 50% poly was too high for it to really do anything, which is interesting. it didn’t lessen the seam edge effects either, which is a little annoying bc the seams were so gigantic and that’s a good chunk of fabric to lose. i am going to buy a camp shirt pattern at some point when i have money again but for now it goes in The Box

also! thrifted a pack of o-rings for jars for a dollar and finally put my grains etc in my pretty jars. they’re going to live in the pantry but today they live out on the countertop

well, as someone with 2 degrees in art history i am afraid i will be a bit biased here but i say absolutely do it if it's something that you love and are passionate about!

being completely candid here i had the best time in school. the BEST time. i loved every second of what i was doing and learning and it never felt like a chore. then for about 5 months post-grad i wanted to find a very large hole and bury myself in it because i could not get a job that utilized my degree to save my life. they were either extremely low paying (seriously, no person could live off of that wage and they were also PhD preferred) or entry level jobs calling for 5+ years experience ???? Like. GET. REAL. (not to worry tho i just recently got a job (aye) as an exhibitions and collections specialist at a museum so we are so on the up and up again)

also being candid here. you're never going to make a ton of money in this field. you're not gonna be "rich" and 95% of it is who you know. the art world is small. TRUST. also, most positions in an art historical field require at least a master's degree tbh. a lot would prefer a PhD especially if you're looking to do curatorial work in any time period pre 1920s. (so if you're an impressionist/baroque/renaissance kinda person be prepared to get a PhD and be prepared to learn another language aside from english to get a good job in the field) <- i do find that it's easier if you're more modern and contemporary focused to get on with just a masters degree

that being said, if this is what you want to do. if this is what you love. it is never a waste and you will find a way. (if I can find a way anyone can find a way). my best advice is talk to your professors, do internships, work if you can !!!! volunteer at your art museums!!!! meet and talk to the museum professionals in your area and NETWORK!! (I can't stress enough how many times someone has been like "oh you worked [redacted] did you know [redacted]?'" and i could be like "yes!!! i worked under them for two years loved her!! blah blah blah" it goes a long. way. i've had professors send me gallery writing guides and artist biography guides from when they worked at the MET so i would know how to write them, academic advisors in scotland know my art history professors in undergrad and subsequently became my bestie by extension, curators at a museum i volunteered at teach me how to work archival systems when they had a free minute)

talk to as many people as you can!! network!!! get some experience in archival systems, instillation work, art historical research!! work with your local university's/city's museum or archeological center! that way, when you're on your inevitable 239823 interview post-grad, someone at some gallery will be like "oh you worked here? under so-and-so???? you're hired"

i love it. what i do doesn't ever feel like work to me, it's exciting and fun and enjoyable and not something i do so i can do other things. it's not something i do just to make money. it's hard. post-grad is hard. but it's hard for a lot of people rn, not just art historians. i'm always gonna say go for it!!!! it is never a waste to do something you love!!

3. Did the idea change at all by the time the fic was complete?

obviously the fic is not yet complete but the general idea and overarching plot at its core is more or less the same. however once I actually started writing I decided to flesh it out more which of course changed some things, because there's definitely scenes that I did not originally plan out

4. If the fic required it, what did you research in order to write it?

i did look up different museums in nyc and what art/artifacts they have, but im pretty sure i have kept it somewhat vague within the story. also watched a show about art heists that happened to get ideas but i do rely on movie heist logic since it's a superhero fic anyways. another thing i've done research was spider-man lore to get inspiration on the plot and what the villains would be up to, and storylines that had spider-man and black cat team ups, again for some plot inspo (also to find quotes for the chapter titles)

19. While editing, did you kill any darlings? What were they?

honestly no, i did not actually kill any darlings i definitely reworked stuff but it lead to me writing scenes i liked a bit better, there are ideas that i have but since i havent written those in yet i dont think they count as being killed if i dont include them. (i do have the final scenes written so those darlings might die depending on how the rest of the middle goes)

First things first, I’m not the best person to answer this because I’m not an artist, so if any of my artist friends wanna help out, feel free to jump in.

From a binding perspective, when I first started out, I found out about the legality behind selling fanfics and chose to be respectful and ethical for that reason. It feels so icky to me to see binds of Manacled or Art Heist on Etsy for hundreds of $$ when 1) the authors have asked multiple times for people to be ethical when binding meaning hand-bind and do not profit off them (if they can’t, why should we, ya know?) and 2) the world is JKRs (bleh) so it could put the fandom at risk in general which would be shitty. But mostly I care about respecting authors and artists and just having fun with this hobby and binding for myself & friends.

Once again, I’m not the best person to go into the nuances between binding & fanart, but the only thing I can think of is that artists are creating something from scratch with general descriptions that could be interpreted as og characters.

Hopefully this was somewhat helpful, but maybe I didn’t explain it well enough. Long story short, no one needs a physical copy of a bind and if you do have the means of resources, learn to bind or get one from an ethical binder and don’t spend hundreds of $$ lining some assholes pocket 🤪😌🫶🏼 (hopefully this didn’t come off as mean or rude bc that was not my intention!!) 😘😘😘

last read: percy jackson and the lightning thief. my girlfriend loves pj and it has a special place in her heart, having never interacted with any pj media apart from seeing the second movie (?) i promised i would at least read the first book before the new show comes out in december. i read all of it in february except for the last 12 pages and then didnt finish it until last week. it was a great time and as someone who enjoys seeing reinterpretations of old stories i think it was really creative taking these old myths and retelling them in a completely different context.

reading now: poor people with money by dominic hoey. reccomended by both my mum and gfs mum for a long time but told them i had to finish pj first, i read the entire thing in one sitting this morning. i really loved it so much. set in auckland and the far north of nz, two places i grew up in. nothing like reading a novel which namedrops the primary school you went to in the first chapter. the author and main charcter are dyslexic so its written in a way which is so accessible with zero pretense which i always appreciate in art as well. perfectly captures the experience of living in new zealand, the attention to detail is insane and i hope to one day have observational skills like his. i read this at the absolutely perfect time, will have to reread again to fully grasp some things.

up next: six of crows by leigh bardugo. fantasy heist novel. watched the netflix show which combined this and another series set in the same universe, thought this story seemed far more interesting so im excited to see what it has in store. will do the sequel after that.

also looking forward to reading a "human geography" textbook, the next PJ, and maybe some other random recs from mum.

I changed something about my headcanon so I'll list it down here

I don't headcanon Stronghold as German anymore, since Stronghold doesn't look German to me anymore.

I don't headcanon BBJC speaking Spanish anymore, since Belle was not Hispanic after all

Since the fandom can agree that everyone calls them Belle and Jean, then I changed my headcanon to them calling each other BB and JC seductively(Mandrin still stays the same)

Jean and Nun-chuck met at the same Church on every sunday so this is why they alr bestie like when they joined the V6

Sometime Wild teached the other V6 members some Mandrin words like his name or some object he see in his everyday life.

About my fanfic lore.....

BBJC used to hang out during the night time, when the others found out, especially Wild, they stopped. When Wild was kicked, they don't return to that habit was because they had alr spent their time together at the headquarters during night time at heist planning. And on Midnight Visit Belle wanted to do this old habit again so yeah

And yes, they do go home after hanging out with each other before Wild was kicked because them being together, was a secret

After Wild was kicked out they still haven't tell The V6 yet, untill the rest of the V6 discovered it themself during "Mr Gru's house breaking" time.

This post maybe made you felt like something was wrong was because that Im burned out from school activities and Im tired of doing anything. I'll come back with an edit tho, don't worry, just see if I'm motivated enough and I'll be able to do it. (I felt bad of Wild Knuckles enough alr lmao)

Lupin III Chapter 49 Review

chapter 49 is the start of the white collar series, where lupin poses as a employee in various(?) office jobs and fucks things up i guess!

id also like to show the magazine cover of this chapter, just because it looks so sick. this is also one of the rare times lupin is illustrated with a yellow jacket, so that something quite noteworthy about it

i also just really like the use of primary colors and abstract vibes of the drawing pre new adventure art style isn't my favorite but im starting to find its charm of it c:

the chapter starts off with lupin running out of an office building with a suitcase. his dalmatian friend is there too it turns out that he's gotten a very important contract from a different company, and he is going to give it to his boss- apparently he works for a transport company of some sort

he doesn't steal it mind you, lupin steals most things but I think given the context that hes working as a regular exployee, he just got it through some business meeting

wow! a colored page i found on the internet! (i wish i remembered where i got it from, might be from lupin central?) you might've also seen this somewhere too, so this is the chapter where it came from.

you can see him driving away with his dog as misnames the dogs a few time and gets his ass ripped apart for it a lot of this chapter is colored, but while it does look quite nice, its not when it would end up being black and white when turned into a volume :(

as my friend puts it, refering to the this panel: "The lack of colors made it so hard to figure out what's happening that I thought something was emerging out of his ass and it was like a goop / monster / his disguise skin peeling off into a living amalgamation"

lupin comes back to his boss to present the contract to him, but he gets berated since the boss didn't need this contract despite lupin thinking it would be important he leaves the office annoyed and overhears his co-workers saying that the boss was fired lupin then rushes back to the boss to find out what happened

im not gonna fucking type out the english text because its plain confusing so ill try my best to explain it

they're under trouble since the contract lupin got was from an oil company that gave them all rights to international shipping while it seemed really good and had a lot of opportunity for them to gain money, he had to cancel it why did he have to cancel it lupin asks? because the contract required the company to ship all of the oil company's product… including the oil bomb they have. its simply too risky for them to transport something so fragile as that, so he cancels it and lupin has fucked his company up!

its so weird talking about lupin having a normal office job god

we then get lupin and jigen reflecting on their situation, its essentually just exposition dump ive just explained already jigen wonders why lupins even having this office work in the first place, and he then figures out its just a heist lupins planning

now lupin is working out a plan to find a way to transport the oil bomb efficiently without blowing up i guess the boss could uncancel it anytime?? so lupins trying to win him back again

we then get introduced to another fujiko mine, who says that shes now working with lupin as his secretary (he likes her already) she picks up the plan and we get another instance of mp having to write new panels for the volume again lol

lupin then proposes the plan to his boss, which rips it apart! saying that hes already heard of it and accuses lupin of copying the plan from another employee!!

this employee in question is a man called okite, which the story implies he may have been the one to copy lupin's plan and just proposed it first but who knows that might just be me they have the same objective, but now theyre on a race to see which one can move the oil bomb first

hmm why do i remember this story already before… (tac tics)

while lupin talks to jigen again about the situation, okite finds lupin and says that he knows what lupins motives are he also knows lupin's real identity, and that he would just steal from his plan in order to transport the bomb himself! we never really get an explanation of what lupin's motivations are but i guess he might just want to use that bomb for something bad i guess??? or he just became a office worker for fun idk that sounds like something he would do in his free time

lupin leaves okite alone, but just warns him that he might want to keep those plans of his safe…

the next day, okite shows the boss his plan, and he rips it apart!! revealing that lupin had already shown this plan to him beforehand!! get played fool.

we then switch to lupin having a simply joyous time in his bed, while fujiko enters his room, saying that she needs to use his shower, since hers is broken bro what is she plotting she also gets on the same bed with lupin, which he totally ignores the red flags and thinks that she wants to have sex with him which she DOESN'T she suspects from the rumors that lupin might be a thief and stole okite's plan, and she's gonna fucking kill him ah good lord

she reveals that she's actually okite's girlfriend and ALSO WORKING FOR ZENIGATA AHHH HES HERE

put zenigata in when they least expected it - mp 1968

lupin tries to escape, but he gets handcuffed to the bed… and zenigata says some ridiculous line here in the english version

L: Handcuffs!? Z: Damn, you're kinky Lupin. They'll love that in prison.

can someone confirm that he actually says that in the japanese version because this sounds so tokyopoppy

he then tries to arrest lupin in, but lupin then stops them and presents them a very very small bit of an oil bomb... saying that if they take him in, he'll drop it and explode the entire place down!!! oh no!!!!

ok hold on what does an oil bomb look like it doesnt say BUT HOW IS THIS AN OIL BOMB

ITS JUST SOME FUNKY MINECRAFT CUBE zenigata doesn't believe lupin either, thinking its just a bluff and shoots the bomb-

and no one would've guessed it

lupin was not bluffing.
