I love your writing so much that I check if you posted anything new right after I wake up and before I go to bed 🥹 I have a little request for you, if you don’t mind. I would like to see König’s POV of anything. It would be great to read fluff (or angst 😭), for example him feeling like a teenager when he’s around reader at the beginning of a relationship, you know, butterflies in his stomach, bit of anxiety, trying to act cool and look best OR if it’s angst then maybe something about him being jealous, because he finally found someone who gets him and who attracts other people (even just in a friendly way!), so he kinda doesn’t know how to control his feelings, BUT he’s working on it? (your König goes to therapy sooooo you know we love self aware king). Idk, but I’m begging on my knees to get into König’s mind 🧎‍♀️

He’s pretty sure he should cancel, there were never third or fourth dates. Usually by the end of the night it was a mutual decision that it would be best to not continue dating. But if there’s anything keeping him on the fence it’s you.

He reflects on the small moments he’s saved and logged into his brain. For example, last weekend when you had been sharing a dessert and you saved the last piece for him.

“Please! It’s too sweet for me.” You had said while scrunching up your nose. You placed the piece of cake on his spoon, went back to sipping your coffee.

It was a small gesture but it was a clear indication to him at least, that you were caring, willing to share.

There was another time he knew he wasn’t making eye contact with you, he mentally killed himself for it.

“Just look at them for three seconds…” he replayed the demand in his head.

“Three seconds….”

He couldn’t do it. It wasn’t until you had pointed out the birds in formation flying overhead.

“Hey look at those guys!”

Your head shot straight up, along with your left arm, and he caught the perfect opportunity to look at you. He thought maybe you would look back at him, but your concentration went to the birds.

He stared at you. The curve of your nose, how your eyes widened, your smile perked up on the corners of your mouth, but your gaze stayed on them.

Birds… he thought. you’re his bird.

He found himself smiling. He likes spending time with you. He likes hearing about your day. He likes making you laugh and hearing you gasp when you hear stories that he tells about being away.

Ba-thump, ba-thump, ba-thump —

He catches the ball with his left hand.

He wonders what you’re doing today. He knows your schedule already. He knows that you head off to work, you have a sandwich and a soup for lunch everyday, you make an afternoon coffee to keep your energy level up. He already knows how you take it too —extra sweet with hazelnut flavored creamer, no extra sugar, preferably hot in the morning and iced in the afternoon.

He likes knowing the little things about you.

Like how many pet animals you had as a kid.

How you don’t sleep with socks on.

You brush your teeth on the left side of your mouth and not the right side.

There are also things he’s seen that he’s taken mental note of.

Like how you eat your vegetables before you eat meat on your plate.

How you blink slowly when you're getting sleepy. There’s even times your lip curved just a little bit to the right when you get excited about something.

Small things he’s picked up, locked into a file in his brain and loves.

Ba-thump, ba-thump, ba — thump-thump-ump

He stops, hears wheels on the gravel crunch outside his house.

He stands up from the living room, walking towards the front door. He only catches a glimpse, realizing the color of your hair, leaving a package on his doorstep.

He doesn’t open the door, but can hear you giggling outside and then running back to your car before driving away.

A smile curls up his face, he catches it, and gets embarrassed.

Once the coast is clear, he feels the ping and vibration from his phone, checking it.

“I was driving by and someone left something on your doorstep!”

He smiles at your text.

“Oh really?”

“Yes!”

“Funny… I saw someone giggling outside driving your car and had your hair color too.”

“So weird!”

He puts his phone down, he’s smiling. Opening the door, seeing the small cream colored package on his porch. Picking it up gently; he brings the package inside.

A small hint of worry comes to his head. What’s inside the package?

He sees it’s sealed with thin, clear tape. He grabs the knife out of his sweatpants, flips it open, quickly swiping the knife against the tape.

The scent hits him. It’s sweet, and vanilla?

He opens the package and there are four cupcakes inside. Perfectly frosted, decorated with rainbow sprinkles. There is one word written on each of the cupcakes.

“Happy. two. month. anniversary!”

Fuck. He can’t help the smile that appears on his face. He’s never celebrated any anniversary before and now he feels stupid that he didn’t even remember.

He quickly texts you back—

“You didn’t have to do that.”

“Buuuut how else are we supposed to celebrate?”

His tongue licks his bottom lip, attempting to hide the smile that keeps appearing. At this rate, his cheeks are going to be sore from all this happiness.

“Can I see you tonight?”

“Yes. Your place or mine?”

“Yours.”

There’s a small hesitation when he reaches the door to your apartment. He leans against the doorframe after the first 3 knocks. He hears you running from the living room to the door, where you take 3-4 breaths? He counted three for sure. Then you collect yourself and slowly walk to the door.

Once opened, he prays mentally that you don’t notice how fast his heart is racing when he envelops you in a hug.

“Hi!” You chirp at him, he can see how far your neck cranes up to see him.

He bends down to kiss you, pulls up his face mask.

His heart keeps pounding on his chest, it’s so loud, thumping in his ears. Please don’t let her hear or feel it.

You bring him towards the couch, laying on him immediately. He likes that you’re so comfortable with him. You don’t hesitate with him.

“Well?” You ask.

“Well what?”

“What’s up? What’s new? Why are you nervous?”

He covers his face with his enormous hand, blushing instantly.

“How do you know?” He says sheepishly.

“What? That you’re nervous? You’ve been red since you opened the door.”

He doesn’t know if this is going to last long, part of him hopes that it does because he can’t grow tired of hearing you run towards the door when he comes by. He can’t get over how you greet him with so much love, and he can’t get over meeting someone so… so special like you.

You play as Kit probably but not only are you a fatherless protagonist you don't have a mother now either

So idk man maybe he just stumbles into Flamesgrace and they were like 'tf are you stumbling around without a pokemon for here go fetch kid 

And this is how Kit gets a church-sanctioned starter pokemon

Archbishop Josef's like 'hey you should totally challenge my daughter Ophilia she's a Gym Leader on the side' 

Minutes before getting poisoned 

So Kit challenges the slightly neurotic sister who's having a bit of a meltdown over the rituals that now have to be rescheduled but like who reschedules a religious event this important?? 

And her whole gimmick is Friendship Evolutions 

Including a very protective Espeon 

She tells him to move onto the next gym down south in a hurry as she goes back to check up on her dad and Kit's like aight 

She ends up following him after that cuz not only has she been sent on forced leave but now she's also carrying the literal flame of gods that protects the world from devastation unites all people within their nation 

And Kit's very cool with this because he's seen how much ass she can kick 

So they make it to Atlasdam to make a stopover and while Ophilia's taking care of her business she tells Kit to challenge the local Gym Leader 

The problem was that their local Gym was underground and that the Gym Leader was currently preoccupied with being in Ace Attorney Investigations 3 rather than Pokemon Rogue and Noble like the script tells him to so Kit helps him with that first 

This Gym Leader uses Fossil Pokemon and will not stop talking about literally everything no matter what he did 

So not only is Kit getting his ass kicked he's also being given a lecture on gemstones and theft laws 

Kit swears Cyrus's Archen looked apologetic when the professor started talking about rock formations 

Kit wins, which is great, because that got the professor to stop talking and instead congratulated him on his win 

So Kit meets up with Ophilia again in the square, and they're about to head out when they see Cyrus again at the gate with a briefcase and the explanation that he got booted out of the academy on false charges of p*d0philia and is now out to look for a book 

'Professor it's been literally half an hour since I stepped out of your gym what the hell were you DOING' 'A lot can happen in half an hour, as it turns out! Now where to, fellow travelers?' 

Ophilia and Kit now have to deal with the lectures that they are too polite to try and interrupt 

They hoof it down to Rippletide where they witness a robbery 

And in no time at all they were dragged by the ears by a tiny merchant with surprising strength to drug the culprits 

Kit, Ophilia, and Cyrus decide to commit crimes, and perhaps Cyrus is a little too excited at the prospect of drugging pirates 

So they succeed and kick the pirate's asses- and meet this cool guy Leon Bastralle why they were at it 

While they were having lunch at the tavern after this whole thing the merchant plops herself down next to them with a grin and says 'sooooooooooo wanna challenge the Gym?' 'there's a Gym in this town???' 

Tressa decides to take this moment to flex her team of shiny Pokemon- including like three different Meowths that all throw money at Kit's Pokemon 

They may be Bifelgan incarnate but they stand no chance against Kit's protagonist powers so Tressa gives him the badge 

Right as they exit Rippletide Tressa just decides she wants to travel like that cool merchant that saved them earlier so her parents just take care of the gym they guess??? 

Point is they're a lot richer now in the routes between Rippletide and Cobbleston where oh hello- there's been a kidnapping 

They all help out this burly big dude named Berg and Cyrus keeps throwing him and the gigantic sword on his hip suspicious looks 

But it's not until they confront the baddies and Berg's Aegislash pops out that Cyrus squeals in delight because aREN'T YOU THE UNBENDING BLADE OH MY GODS THEY SAID YOU WERE DEAD CAN I TROUBLE YOU FOR AN INTERVIEW OVER TEA LATER- 

Meowth's out of the bag and Olberic comes clean about his past after they rescue his not-kid 

Cyrus does not leave him alone after this. Because on top of being a professor he's also just one massive history nerd. Olberic is surprisingly alright with this arrangement. 

He's also surprisingly okay with leaving his massive technicality of a gym leader status to the leader of the dude they just took in for murder and pillaging because hey didn't Gaston's men literally skin a dude alive for his wallet 

But Olberic has a revenge quest to go on so it's fine

 TL;DR: Kit is on a journey with a funky starter Pokemon, and instead of being sorted by type the Gym Leaders have gimmicks cuz why not

Ophilia has friendship evolutions, Cyrus has fossil pokemon, Tressa has shiny pokemon, and Olberic is uhhhh Double Battles, I guess 

Does this have a Part 2? No. not yet anyway.

Oh contraire Tumblr user @slush-posting I think he changed a LOT. Sorry again for the weird formatting idk how to fix it but HEAR ME OUT on fo4 Mac.

So with fo3 MacCready I LOVE HIM!!! God he’s so cool and funny my favorite little guy I always have to take the Kid at Heart perk to get him to like me. His dialogue is amazing and I LOVE all of the dynamics with the kids at Little Lamplight it’s just great. Fo3 MacCready looks so stupid with his dumb weird scarf and I love him and wish there were like 20 more quests with his character.

With fo4 MacCready, I do really like him (and I think his character design is AWESOME!!!) but I was very disappointed with where they took his character. I get his whole back story with his son and that’s why he curses less and I also get the trauma and how that made him grow up prematurely while still being petulant but idk I feel like they just took MacCready and made a whole new character out of him. There are obvious similarities but I feel like Bethesda saw an opportunity of a beloved child character that they could bring over and age up and they took it.

I also really hate how his personal quest ended!!! It’s so ridiculous that he wouldn’t go back to the Capital Wasteland for Duncan or that Duncan wouldn’t come to the Commonwealth!! It doesn’t make any sense. Duncan could’ve grown up alongside Shawn and had the same sort of diolougue and stuff and I think it would’ve been great!! It also doesn’t make any sense at all in the first place that McCready would not bring Duncan with him. I guess you could make the argument that he was too sick to move but then wouldn’t MacCready just do jobs in the Capital Wastes??? Why travel all the way to the Commonwealth even if you thought there was more work there it just seems like it would not be smart with his son having no other parent and being so sick.

I think it would’ve been a really cool idea that could explain away why MacCready is in the Commonwealth and why Duncan is not with him if Bethesda had made it so that MacCready, having become a father too young, was not happy about his situation and resented his son for the death of his wife or something similar. He is obviously a very loving father in the canon though which is sweet. In general I really like his personal quest I just wish it had a better ending and less plot holes lol.

Another thing that Bethesda totally wasted was Deacon and Mac’s relationship!!!! They obviously know each other more than the other companions and given Deacon has definitely frequently been in the Capital Wasteland I think they totally could’ve done something more with the two knowing each other!!! I also have a personal unpopular opinion which is that I don’t think Deacon/Mac is a good ship. MacCready is so young and Deacon is so old it just creeps me out. I think their relationship reads a lot more like one that the Lone Wanderer and kid MacCready would have had. Now there is mutual respect and disrespect at the same time in different ways. Deacon still sees Mac as a petulant kid despite his accomplishments and Mac is angry at how Deacon has changed for the worst throughout the years when he respected and really liked him before. At least that’s my read.

I don’t think anyone is particularly interested in my music taste but this is my blog and oh boy do I have a couple thoughts on the new suisoh music video (EAR CANDY). I’m not TOO invested in this but I noticed it and idk where to put it other than here AND I like the music so!! ^-^ I’m not going to pretend to understand the meaning of it even though there’s english subtitles but I really like the art and the vibe and it’s great

EAR CANDY seems to be about a schoolgirl who’s isolated from everyone else. The only time she’s shown interacting with someone else is shown like this:

Generally, she seems to dislike everyone else, and the lyrics before this are talking about how people like her better when she’s quiet, but she doesn’t care about that. There’s also multiple shots of her lying alone* in the nurse’s office (?) and staring at the ceiling, which I think is a good way to show her being distant from her peers / possibly skipping school.

* = there���s another student shown, but they’re a couple beds away and facing away from her

Also fun that most of the MV is colored pink but parts with other people are more likely to be colored blue. It’s not definite, and definitely there’s some blue at other unrelated places in order to set the mood of the video (a good choice imo) but the pink is OVERWHELMING at some parts, see:

Anyways. This is important to me because it SEEMS TO BE in a series which started with Bluenote, because at the end of the video she enters a room we SAW in Bluenote, with the same text format??? Look at this.

The main character from Bluenote enters it too!!! It’s just interesting because it feels like it’s building into something, but I can’t tell what it is. And looking over Bluenote’s video, there’s a couple interesting things. First, while EAR CANDY’s phrase (”This night candied”) is a reference to the title, Bluenote’s phrase (”That night expired”) is a reference to the lyric “the sign on the express train flashes by / no longer valid, expired” which isn’t that important but I’m not sure what pattern they’re going through with.

Second, while EAR CANDY is a bit more ambiguous with it’s meaning, Bluenote is a clearly a breakup song. Bluenote follows a man who reflects on his relationship, and the ways they’re still connected and the feelings he still feels for her, and also is on the bus a lot of the time. Yay for public transportation. The “that night expired” phrase makes a lot of sense with this meaning!!! Bluenote is a really interesting song.

Third, Bluenote and EAR CANDY are opposites in terms of colors. When the man in Bluenote is alone, the colors are always blue, but the scenes with his ex are pink or orange!!! I don’t know what it means, but if this IS a cohesive project like I think it is, it’s SO cool to have a color theme!!! Here’s some screenshots of the colors:

And the last sign that they’re connected is that the girl from EAR CANDY is possibly (?) in Bluenote!!! How cool is that!!!

Obviously this could be some random background girl too... but I feel like the hair is too similar and the ends of the song having them go into the same place too obvious for it to NOT be her :0 I have no idea how they might be connected other than being from songs by the same musician but it’s VERY cool to see, and I wonder if future suisoh songs will continue this!!

EDIT: I never watched the video for Introduction!!! It does the same ending!!! It’s phrase is “Ready to night” which is also in the lyrics to the song I think...? It’s colors are orange and green rather than blue and pink/red like the other, but it’s still CLEARLY part of the series! Epic!

• you haven’t seen his archon side a lot, since he doesn’t show it all that much, but it’s so far from venti it’s a little scary; but in a sort of admiring way yk

• you guys visit zhongli sometimes, and it’s a free real estate for blackmail material bc of how terrified venti is of him

• zhongli is like that long lost uncle who visits once a year, and you’re his favorite child so he gives you candy and picks on venti for not taking good enough care of you

• if you ever get drunk he will hear about it and will come all the way from liyue to i will have order venti’s head, regardless of whether he was the cause of you being drunk or not

So, I meant to post this after watching last week’s episodes, but I kinda forgot, so here we are, with my thoughts and theories from last week’s and this week’s episodes!

WARNING! This will have spoilers for the two new Owl House and Amphibia episodes, so just skip this post if you don’t want to see them!

The Owl House Season 2 Episode 11:

*I love the format of starting some of the episodes with Luz’s diary entries, but having to watch Luz come up with reasons to convince her mom that the Boiling Isles is a great place, but everything going wrong, was tough to watch

*I thought seeing King without his skull was the worst thing I’d see. I was wrong. So wrong. Hooty as a skeleton will haunt my nightmares forever

*Every single Lumity moment in this episode killed me! Not just the adorable moments at the beginning, with the blushing and CHEEK KISS, but also the moments where Luz opened up to Amity about her struggles

*Seeing Luz get so excited about Eda and Raine warmed my heart so much!

*Can we talk about how Amity didn’t go through Luz’s phone and respected her privacy? Representation of healthy relationships for the win!

*I lost my mind when we got the Amity and Willow interaction! I have been waiting for a one on one moment between them for so long, and we got it and it was so good! Also, Willow getting her new hairy style from Amity because it was probably something that they used to do as kids I’m just sfgsdhjdghhgg

*I love Terra’s design! She is such a cool and interesting character, and I’m excited to see more of her

*Then there was the scenes with Eda and Raine, which took my heart and stomped all over it. It was so awful to watch, especially when you know they’re both hurting. Honestly, though, I’m still not sure if Raine is under a spell, and they’ve actually forgotten, or if they were forced to push Eda away and fake it.

*Seeing more of Kikimora’s character was so cool, and I’m so intrigued to see what her development will be like, whether she’ll get redemption or not

*What’s up with this Unity Day plan?! We already knew that Unity Day had something to do with getting rid of wild magic, but how could Belos get rid of all wild magic in one go? And how will it involve the Coven leaders? Does the portal have anything to do with it? There are still so many questions!

The Owl House Season 2 Episode 12:

*Luz and Lilith being able to show their nerdy sides with each other was everything I never knew that I needed

*It was so cool hearing more about Eda’s family’s background, and how they were known for making palisman!

*Call me a nerd, but I love time travel stuff! However, the hidden time pools leading to different time periods was one of the most interesting concepts I’ve ever seen! Plus, that moment when Lilith tripped over a rock, but it was actually herself looking through one of the time pools?! I loved it

*Okay, so at this point, there is no doubt in my mind that Belos is Phillip. I mean, his hatred towards witches, especially wild witches, the glyphs on his arm that reminded me a bit of Belos’s condition, and absorbing the palisman at the end of the episode. I’ve had this theory for a while, but this pretty much confirms it for me

*One thing I’m still unsure about, but very intrigued by, is this other human with Phillip. I feel like it’s Hunter, or Hunter is somehow connected to it. But, then there’s also the theory that Hunter is a grim walker. I’m torn between the two. Unless, possible crazy theory, but hear me out: Hunter was the other human, but something happened to him, and Belos created the grim walker to be sort of like a replacement for him, which is maybe why he’s a witch, but can’t use magic? Idk, just throwing something out there

*So, Lilith thought the village in the past was going to be dangerous because of wild magic, but it was actually a very pleasant and beautiful place, unlike present day Bonesborough…How are we all feeling about that?

* I’m also very interested in how Lilith and Luz interacting with Philip will change things?! Like, if Philip is Belos, will they be the reason why he started hating wild witches, or what pushed him closer to where he is now?! Will we see any changes in the present? Idk man, but there could be some really cool things there

*Eda’s reunion with her dad? Seeing how the guilt has been weighing on Eda all these years, especially with how it impacted her dad’s work with carving palisman? Eda and her dad carving Owlbert together?! I’m totally fine 😭

Amphibia Season 3 Episode 11

*What’s better than one character worrying about her parent/s and how she’ll have to eventually choose between two worlds and say goodbye to one? Two characters! Watching Anne have to deal with that pain throughout the entire episode was awful, but at least she got to say goodbye to them before she left

*That ending. Why. I knew it was coming, but it still hurt. And now we’ll have to see everyone go through the aftermath of the destruction of Amphibia, and the guilt of having left it behind

*I adore Anne’s parents so much! That’s it. I just love them

*Seeing all the characters from this season come together was so cool, and I loved seeing all the interactions between them

*Every time Anne uses her powers, UGHH, it’s so cool, but that last time was especially interesting, because know we know that she can, in a way, generate energy, like a human battery, and I wonder if that’s another clue as to where the power came from, and what exactly it is. From Anne’s comment earlier in the season, about how she got a bad feeling from using it, I’m not sure if this power is gonna be a positive thing. Also, I can’t wait to see the other powers!

Amphibia Season 3 Episode 12

*I loved seeing Anne and the Planters’ reaction to what’s happened in Amphibia since they left. Was I devastated? Yes. Was I also very intrigued? Also yes

*I am so excited about the new vibe of the show and the direction it’s going in with the resistance and the war against King Andrias, especially with the different missions they went on

*The resistance was so cool, and it was really interesting to see how they live as a society underground, and see the world that they’ve built

*I thought it was so funny to see the Planters have to readjust to Amphibia after being in Anne’s world for so long, and all those moments made me laugh

*It was amazing to see Sasha’s growth, and how she was trying to be a better friend to Anne and start to fix their relationship

*I’m really growing to love Sasha as a character, and seeing not only her growth, but also see her personality show through. The flag waving was adorable!

*Sprig and Ivy are adorable as a couple

*Okay, but those collars were crazy, and it was such an interesting detail to show how King Andrias has changed Amphibia. I’m curious (and slightly afraid) to see how else the world has changed

They knew they were dreaming, they had to be.

Hero was there, with them, her eyes sparkling when she looked at them and her voice saying she loved them. 

It was a dream, and they never wanted to wake up. In this dream, things were different. Villain wasn’t a Villain anymore. Hero trusted them.

But they knew the truth.

“Villain! Villain stop, please, I’m begging you to stop,” Hero cried, tears invisible against the rain and the wind whipping her hair across her face. “Please, Villain, just stop, this isn’t you.”

“Of course it’s me,” Villain said, “this is what I’ve always been. Just because I fooled you doesn’t mean a thing about me.”

Hero shouted something else, but it was lost in the storm. Villain’s storm.

Lightning crackled, lighting up the clouds, and, as Villain concentrated, a bolt arced down to strike Hero in the chest, so hot that Villain would have been incinerated if they weren’t immune. 

Hero fell.

And Villain left. Why stay? They saw her body, saw how it smoked. They knew what they had done to her, and now, now… 

The big bad villain vanquished the hero. 

They laughed, and laughed, and laughed. And then, they screamed, and Villain was screaming and screaming and-

“Villain! Babe, wake up, wake up!”

They jerked awake, and Hero had them in her arms. 

“You were dreaming, you were dreaming,” Hero murmured. 

“I-It was when I- when I killed you,” Villain said. They leaned into Hero, squeezing their eyes shut. 

“I’m here,” Hero said, holding them even tighter. “And you never killed me. See? I’m right here.”

“Are you?” Villain muttered. “You shouldn’t be.”

Hero pulled back, and took Villain’s face in her hands. “Do you see me?” she said. “Tell me what you see.”

“I see… you. Your eyes, and your… intensity. I always liked your eyes, even when I- when I was-”

“You’re not doing that now, thought,” Hero said. “Do you think I’m fake?”

“...No.”

“Do you think I’d be here if I didn’t want to be? If I didn’t love you?”

Villain opened their mouth to disagree, not even sure what they’d say- ‘yes, I think you’re only pretending’, or ‘you can’t be here’, but they knew where that would lead. Hero would give them a look, and just ask a different question. 

“No,” they said finally. “No one could make you stay somewhere you didn’t want to be.”

“Not even you?”

“Not even me.”

“Then why am I here?”

A number of contrary replies rose to Villain’s lips, as they always did, but then Hero gave them that look, and Villain sighed.  “Because… you love me.”

Hero nodded. “And you are worthy of love, and worth every moment.”

Tears welled up in Villain’s eyes, threatening to spill over. Villain couldn’t let that happen, or else the dam would break and they’d start sobbing, and they couldn’t- wouldn’t- do that.

“I love you too,” they managed, voice breaking over the words.

Hero smiled then, soft and full of something that Villain couldn’t describe. “Would you like to go make some tea?” she asked. “We can go together.”

Villain nodded. “I’d really, really like that.”

IDK if Forests was my favourite episode of Prehistoric Planet, but if it isn't, it's pretty damn close.

Austroposeidon's appearance was brief but seeing sauropods so big they can knock down trees is a pretty amazing sight.

Triceratops eating clay to deal with plant toxins? This is straight up All Yesterdays stuff, and I love it. Honestly the focus on plants in these ecosystems was a general highlight of this episode.

Carnotaurus was understandably hyped up a lot, and it did not disappoint. Seeing a predatory dinosaur make a space to do its dance and looking flamboyant when doing so is so refreshing.

The Corythoraptor stuff was cool (lowkey expected them to get drunk like in Walking with Beasts lol), as well as Qianzhousaurus being a different kind of tyrannosaur, slightly smaller and more gracile. Also the environment it was in was quite a standout with the autumn leaves, and also shoutout to ginkgoes!

Seeing the Horseshoe Canyon formation was a surprise but it WAS Early Maastrichtian, so it's just earlier than the other North American stuff. Nice glimpses of behaviour like smoke to get rid of parasites and Anodontosaurus eating charcoal to manage plants.

Baby Therizinosaurus! Loved those critters, and the idea they could try and get at honey was quite inspired. My favourite single moment had to be the adult whacking the bee hive down after the babies struggled so much, lol.

Hateg fauna! I wish we got to see more of it, it felt like we just got brief glimpses of the animals. Would've loved more Zalmoxes (especially adult ones), Hatzegopteryx hunting bigger prey as the island's macropredator, and dwarf sauropods. Still, I'll take everything I can get, and we could get a Season 2 one day! Loved getting a glimpse of this unique ecosystem however brief it was. Also they used a larger sauropod than I expected (might be "Magyarosaurus" hungaricus?).

Also side note, but no cliche asteroid ending! We don't have to always see dinosaurs die, lol. And if they want, they can explore it in a future Season if they get to make it.

Anyway, was really great watching Prehistoric Planet. Nice to see a documentary where even if speculation is necessary we get as an up to date look as possible (I've heard some things are already dated LOL, that's how fast we learn things). I hope we get more of this kind of palaeomedia!

Anyways i have a lot of thoughts about jewish Watson (and jewish Watsons plural. in this house we love Mary) in various historical, half historical, and modern variations, and just to top it off I'll mention- I watched Great Mouse Detective for the first time this week and I was overjoyed that.... well. ok now we reach the more, Introspective part because for some reason I personally not only can't entirely envision a jewish Holmes- i have NO idea why my brain/gut just insists something is off with the vibes- I think i am kind of attached to exploring how Holmes is not only culturally christian but seems to, like, underneath It All, kinda cares about it too.

I read him as christian in canon and fro mthe way he talks about his belief**, and I am kinda, happy with it and interested in seeing more of it? Like, Actual Christian Spirituality as more than default-settings is cool and worthy and interesting, especially from a complex, queer, place and honestly the idea of an analytical and logical character who is Religious With Little Question And Little Struggle is an interesting and entirely realistic one that doesn't get done nearly enough.

I love the Thinky, Analytical aspects of judaism but they're not right for everyone, even not analytic people, and i don't think he would vibe with the philosophizing-ness of talmud, asking for asking's sake, thinking in god.

(Which! btw! I think Watson would end up enjoying! he's a people person and a storyteller and canonically is interested in philosophy stuff and i think he would enjoy participating in Shiurim!)

I guess I am personally more interested in he possibilities of exploring the Religiously Christian potential already in Holmes more than a Jewish one, so cheers if that's your cup of tea but idk, for some reason I don't feel about this as much as I thought I would.

Genshin Characters Reactions to you having the powers of someone from another world

(Aka: yet another excuse to talk a bit about Honkai imapct)

Tw: talks about fighting but I think that was a given, swearing

Oh also just know that I’m barley ever serious, it’s not enough to be a whole crack fic buuuuuut...

Quick explanation/ the best explanation I can make about Honkai imapct and how the fighting stuff works:

People called Valkyries are trained to fight these things called Honkai beasts and use these things called “battle suits” to fight them, but there are the gods called Herrschers, they don’t count as Valkyrie’s but some fight Honkai beasts.

One person can have multiple battle suits and depending on the battle suits, they can control elements, there are no elemental reactions, but the elements are still in the battle suits.

I’ll assign you a random battle suit, with pictures of said battle suit and the stats, of course (Although the weapon stats are the stats of the weapons when you first get it).

Oh, and I should also add:

SP is like the energy that’s used for ultimates.

Some cost less than others some cost more. You get SP from hitting monsters and stuff.

Now onto the headcanons!

Prolog:

You loved Genshin Impact, playing the game when you felt like it, trying your hardest to get a good team and then build them up, you hated the constant grind, but you put up with it because you were having so much fun playing the game.

Recently you’ve heard about another game MiHoYo released a few years back, Honkai Impact 3rd, you saw a video of one cutscene from inside the game and immediately went to download the game.

Now you’ve been playing for a while and you’re also having a pretty great time there too, you’ve pulled for quite a few characters and found it fairly easy to build a team.

One night, you stay up to late playing Genshin and you wake up literally inside Teyvat. You soon discover that you have the powers and abilities of the Valkyrie you were building up.

Cool part is, you look exactly like the Battle suit, the only things you kept were your skin, eyes, hair colour and body shape, pretty cool that you somehow magically also took their fighting reflexes, fighting style, weapon and powers/abilities.

(No seriously, fighting like the Valkyrie does in the game feels like second nature to you.)

You spend a few weeks in Teyvat, and make quick friends with a few people, however you only tell one about- uh- this mess.

Albedo:

Battle suit: Stygian Nymph

Let me clarify that the more SP Stygian Nymph has during her ultimate increases her damage output. That’s why she’s op.

Oh wait that makes a lot of sense.

He knew you came from another world, you told him that

But to also imitate that person’s abilities?

How interesting

He studies you a lot, asking questions about the Valkyrie herself

You tell him that Seele (the Valkyrie that uses this battle suit), also uses her ‘other self’ to fight in battle, but you haven’t tried to summon her because you literally have no idea what would happen

Which is pretty reasonable

Albedo asks you if you’re okay with trying it out for the reasearch

You go “fuck it” and call upon your ‘other self to lend you their strength’ just like Seele does

It works, but you still have full control, no ‘other you’ sadly

You test out the fact that your sythe had turned into these giant floating claws and tenticals

You have SO MUCH fun bulling the hilihurls

Poor them

Then after clearing through many, many, many camps (listen this battle suit can solo anything), you remember Stygian Nymph’s Ultimate

You figure that you’ve definitely maxed out your SP and that the damage is going to be humongous

So you go to bully that poor cryo flower (I forgot what it’s called)

Albedo is unsure, but after you tell him that this battle suit has solo fought a god, a killing machine, a giant dog and more stronger things in Honkai impact, he agrees, completely ready to step in, only just in case though

You just run in, and Albedo goes to find a safe spot to sit down while he watches you fight for a while

He’s like ‘this’ll probably take a while’

So it took less than a minute

You used your ultimate when the boss slouched on the ground

That flower is very dead

You collect your rewards and leave

Albedo’s like wtf was that

You’re like idk man, I had a lot of SP

wtf is an SP?

Aether:

Battle suit: Herrscher of the Void

Side note: you also evade and float around like HotV I just couldn’t find a way to bring it up here without getting off-track.

This is the only acceptation to the ‘your eyes stay the same too’ bit

Your eye colour looks the exact same now

Aether looked you in the eyes and went ‘hey that looks like the person who kidnapped my sister’

He attacked you and you were like ‘Aether wtf’

You tried explaining the situation as calmly as you can while almost being stabbed

He calms down a bit and is like

“So, can you use her powers?”

“The Herrscher of the Void and that unknown goddess are probably not the same person.”

“Oh.”

“But I’m pretty sure they’re like, alternate universe counterparts?”

“Really? Cool.”

You joined his party after a few weeks of Paimon BEGGING Aether to just “Invite y/n, already!”

Paimon is getting tired of watching your semi-awkward interactions

So they hope bringing you on the team will stop making things so awkward

It kinda worked?

After gaining enough SP you used your ultimate, knowing that the missiles(?) couldn’t hurt anyone on your team

You scared the FUCK out of everyone

I mean you helped a lot but like

Battle suit: Motolov Cherry: Augment Core

Let me tell you what an augment core is. I don’t know if they have a canon explanation because I skipped a lot of the HI3rd text, but it’s like a battle suit inside a battle suit.

They usually work similarly but in this case the battle suits aren’t very similar.

The way he met you was unique

He heard a ruckus around Wangshu inn and went to go see if it was trouble

It was but you were taking care of it

He was about to leave because you looked more than capable of handling this

But then he saw that you dual-wield greatswords (or claymores, as they’re called in Teyvat)

You were just flinging them around like it was nothing???

Curious, he stuck around to watch you fight from afar

Then you used your ultimate

Great, now there’s even more pink and blue paint every—

Wait what it all disappeared after the fight wtf

See, the thing is, you actually expected him to be there

That’s why you were clearing out any remaining hilichurl camps around the inn

But you didn’t tell him

So now your talking

You trust him a lot, considering you literally lured him out to talk to him

He sticks around, and of course he asks questions

“Are those horns?”

“Uh, I think?”

“You think?”

“How do you dual-wield strange looking claymores, and then fight with them like they’re regular blades?”

“They’re not actually that heavy.”

“Really?”

“Yeah, you can hold one to test it out.”

He then dropped it on the ground, and fell down with it

Obviously it was kinda funny, but this is Xiao, so you try to hold back your laughter in order to keep Xiao as your friend

He then disappears out of embarrassment

You make a mental note to visit him at the inn sometime

Oh, and don’t forget the Almond Tofu

Venti:

Battle suit: Starlit Astrologos

Yeah she’s a support-dps

She’s my child and I love her

So it all started when you went to the adventures guild to find a place to stay

That’s where he heard you say “I have an anemo vision, but it’s in my coat.”

He surely didn’t remember giving you a vision, he’d definitely remember someone who looked as pretty as you

You got away with it and you were allowed into the adventurers guild!

Suspicious, he goes all like

“Hey, I couldn’t help but over-hear that you have an anemo vision! Let’s be anemo buddies!”

After he says that your just like oh no he’s on to me

You feign obliviousness, pretending like this man isn’t the literal anemo archon, and you agree

So you’re doing a commission and he tags along

Mainly because he doesn’t believe you have anemo powers and he waits for an excuse to come from you

“I’ll stay a bit behind and shoot a bit.”

“Ok, be careful.”

“I will.”

You dig your weapon into the ground, it made a musical bum sound

Wait do you actually have anemo powers

You used your charged attack and deal MASSIVE amounts of damage

And you use your normal attack to heal yourself when you get hit

He’s already amazed

Then a hilichurl is about to attack you from behind, but he can’t shoot it in time

Luckily, you dodge it in time, activating your ultimate evasion

Now, ultimate evasions differentiate from different battle suits

But the most common one is literally stopping time

But an extra thing this battle suit does is release a large burst of wind at the enemy who cause the evasion in the first place

Venti is so confused because he can move, you can move, but the hilichurls are slowed down by a lot

You yell at him to come step in the formation on the ground after time stops

So you continue attacking the hilichurls, and Venti makes his way to the small formation on the ground

The entire time he’s like

‘What the fuck, is y/n actually a human? What’s happening??’

Time goes back to normal and he steps in the forma— AAAAA EVERYTHING IS FROZEN AGAIN

Then the cherry on top to the cake of confusion was your ultimate

Hoo boy

Your ultimate is a giant formation with a tornado inside it

“Ok what the fu—“

After that you tell him that your from another world and about the whole situation blah blah blah

“So, you come from a different world, and then you took the powers of someone else from a different world?”

“Yeah, she’s like, really strong.”

“Is she a god?”

“Nope.”

“Then what are the gods in that world like..?”

HMMMMMMMM how do I do that indeed, the basics are honestly what you’d find on any basic tutorial about drawing a face (circle, cross in the middle of it, build the face around that - I really still can’t avoid that step and probably never will). As for the expressions, to be honest with you my way of going about them is thinking them up in emoji/kaomoji form first and then go from there. Emojis and kaomojis have to simplify expressions to the max since it’s such a simple format, right? But they’re still super expressive and convey exactly what they’re trying to say with one single glance, so using them as some kind of reference sheet has helped me a lot in figuring out what’s essential to express what I’m trying to say - still working on it though! I’m rarely satisfied with my expressions, they really do make or break a drawing don’t they............ you never stop learning, I guess!

How about a Vox Machina one where the reader is generally the go to comfort person of the group? Maybe it's emotional or physical comfort, but everyone eventually has laid their head on their lap, stomach, shoulder, or leg. Just general caduceus vibes coming from the reader! She could even be a firbolg or tabaxi.

Pike

She was the first to warm up to you, you both being similar in wanting to help and protect the party though Pike couldn’t always stick around. When she is around the two of you usually like spending some time together with her sitting in your lap while you help fix up her hair, carefully combing your hands though her white locks a few hair ties in hand.

"Sometimes I envy you." She says out of the blue one day, you let out a soft hum of acknowledgment and let her continue. "You get to be there for them, helping everyone while I run off to fulfil my duties to Sarenrae. There’s so much I have to do and figure out but I also so badly want to help, it just… it can be a lot sometimes." She lets out a soft sigh. You pause in your actions and think about her words for a moment.

"Do you dislike it?" You question.

"What? No, of course not. I have great faith in the path put before me." You chuckle lightly at her defensiveness.

"Then why envy me? Just because you aren’t always here with us doesn’t mean you're not helping. As far as I can see we all have our roles to play in the grand scheme of things. Sure, there are things I can do which you might not, but there are also things that only you can achieve that I certainly could never do. I could never replace you and what you mean to everyone, and I'd never want to." You finally resume your actions, finishing up with fixing her hair into neat little buns. "I hope your hair is to your liking." You quickly add handing over a mirror. She takes it and looks herself over before placing the mirror back down, looking up at you with a smile and giving you a hug.

"It’s perfect. Thank you, for everything… I really needed that talk. We should do this more often." You look down at her and return the smile and hug with a soft purr.

"It'd be my pleasure."

Keyleth

She had a charming awkwardness to her or at least that’s what you'd call it but even so you always welcomed any conversation with her no matter how strange they may be sometimes. Evenings seemed to be the time you’d have these conversations the most, taking in the cool air and overall unwinding from a long day. Today brought in something different when your ears flit around to catch the faint sound of footfalls making there way over to your location, turning to see Keyleth halt in her steps, you give her a kind smile.

"Care to join me, there’s plenty of room." You scoot over slightly and pat the ground next to you, accepting the offer she shuffles over and sits down. Neither of you say anything at first, just watching as the stars awaken and twinkle in the sky accompanied by crickets chirping their nightly sonata making for a serene atmosphere. You look over at Keyleth seeing a saddened expression drawn on her face, a slight gloss over her eyes. "Troubled?" You ask with a quiet voice.

"I uhh, I guess." She sighs, you move closer to her and she automatically leans her head against your shoulder, being mindful of the antlers.

"Care to talk about it?" You throw an arm around her shoulder and give her a few gentle back rubs. She takes a second and lets out a some puffs of air, you could feel her body tremble a little.

"What if I’m not cut out for this." She finally says. You turn your head slightly to look at her and she stares back a second before looking away again and continuing. "Becoming headmaster of the Air Ashari I mean." Doubt weighed heavily in her voice.

"You are a strong individual with a stubborn yet admirable determination when you set your heart and mind to something, perhaps not every plan works out in the end but you always have the interest of others in mind. Traits like that are well needed for a good leader." You reassure. She shifts in her position to wipe away any tears that were starting to fall with her arm.

"I just- I don’t know if I can really do this, my mother never returned and I’m not like my father." Before she can continue you turn your body and get a firm grip on her shoulders making her pause and finally look at you.

"Keyleth," the sudden firmness in your voice surprised her. "You're right, you are not your father nor are you your mother, the only person you can be is yourself and that is what makes you great. That’s what we all love about you, all of us here with you love you because you’re no one else but yourself. Stubborn, quirky awkwardness and all." When you finish your little speech you take a moment to let your words sink in for her. She stares at you stunned, the tears start trailing down her face again as it all sets in and she quickly embraces you with a soft sob, you return the gesture giving her a chance to let out all she’d been holding back.

"I never wanted this." She breaths, hiccuping through her words a little, sounding more muffled from leaning into your shoulder. You get the feeling she didn’t intend for that to be said aloud when she speaks again, more clearly this time. "You say it like that’ll make this easy."

"I know it won’t be, it’s a long, rough road ahead but you have to remember we’re all here for you every step of the way." You stay in the hug for a few minutes you soothingly comb your fingers through her hair until Keyleth finally lets go, signalling you to do the same.

"I think I feel a little better now. Did you still want to talk about something else?" She asks almost nervously making you chuckle softly.

"Of course, it’s always a pleasure to talk with you."

Vex

It took a while before Vex eventually started to warm up to you and give you her trust, not that you were surprised by this, but your calming presents brought in an ease where she could let down her guard without having to worry about being questioned for it, usually joining you while you meditated. You were always fine in letting her use you as a sort of backrest while she tried to come back down from whatever problems she may be going through, hearing her heavy breaths slowly start to calm into steady ones. What usually happens is she’d press her weight against your back, head resting between your shoulder blades with a light thud, you always take a quick peek over your shoulder to see her in a rather tense state, she shifts her gaze at you and you give her a warm smile before returning to your meditation. The silence brings a solace to the atmosphere, never feeling awkward between the two of you, only her heavy breaths being heard as you patiently wait for when or if she was ready to talk, gently wrapping your tail around her waist as support but not trapping her in place.

Most of the time you've well finished your needed meditation but even still decide not to move, just acting as support for your friend. Finally she shifts over making you remove your tail and giving you a chance to stretch your muscles a little. This time she comes around and sits herself in front of you, her eyes showing the broken girl deep down that wanted to say something her voice didn’t want to comply to speaking aloud, the both of you just sharing in a silent conversation by watching the other. You could see so much running though those eyes of someone who grew up with so little, in return you show gentle patience and kind reassurance. You’re surprised by the sudden feeling of her weight on you again, leaning against your shoulder for comfort. She’s never really been this vulnerable with you before, or at the very least didn’t show it often but you weren’t going to say anything about it, instead placing a hand on her back and giving a few pats before keeping it there. Sure not single word had been uttered the entire time but sometimes you don’t need words to express your thoughts.

"I-… Thank you." She says slowly, finally breaking the silence. You remove your hand and stand up properly, giving a small nod and smile.

"It was my pleasure."

Vax

It was a little surprising to you how much quicker Vax was to warm up to and trust you compared to his sister, your calm presents and well understanding of life and death really helping ease his nerves when he traded his life for his sisters to the Raven Queen. The two of you would have talks on rooftops often as a way to hold such deep conversations away from the others.

"I made the right choice, didn’t I?" It was a bit of an odd conversation starter, coming out of nowhere but you were used to that by this point.

"You saved your sisters life and didn’t you say before that you feel you may have finally found your purpose, if I were in your place I would’ve done the same." You say looking over at him, his eyes trained on the horizon for a moment before meeting yours.

"You’d do the same? But you already have a place and purpose in the world." He seemed surprised by your quick resolve, you shake your head with a small hum.

"Let me ask you something. If you only had one year to left to live what would you do? Would you sit on the thought and let it fester into fear and sorrow? Or would you make the most of every moment you've got, leaving your mark on the world with no regrets." He sits back a bit more, thinking over your question.

"Well of course I'd want to make the most of everything and leave with no regrets."

"Precisely, the choices we made are in the past now so we need to make the most of what we have here and now because everything will eventually come to an end, it’s what we do with our remaining time that really counts."

"You make a very compelling point… It’s very late, care to grab a drink?" You hold back a laugh at the sudden change in subject but nod.

"Of course, always a pleasure."

Grog

There really isn’t much to say about Grog, he's like a soft teddy bear deep down if you’re good friends with him and that’s about all there is to it. Though he does enjoy a nice hug from time to time from the "little kitty" as he liked to call you and you weren’t one to complain, so long as he isn’t accidentally crunching you with his immense strength. As for conversations, well there aren’t many and if there is they certainly aren’t anything thought provoking, again not that you’d complain. You liked his simplicity and needs for hugs whenever he wanted one, it's quite a pleasure to just spend time in one another’s company.

(I know this one's shorter but it’s Grog what else can one expect.)

Percy

Often quiet and giving a cold shoulder is what you came to accept from Percy for a while, you could easily tell the man had been through a lot in the past and still suffered from it in the present. However one odd encounter really changed that, finally letting him open up to you and strengthen the bond you shared…

Castle Whitestone, finally free from the Briarwoods grasp, could be a little tricky to navigate if you didn’t know what you were doing, which you didn't but you were following a sound you’d heard, letting your ears flit this way and that to see if you could pick up the sound again. This leads you to stumble upon an old and seemingly forgotten storage room. Letting the curious nature in you take hold you enter the dusty room seeing Percy of all people had also found his way here before you and was staring at something. Getting a closer look, you see that it’s an old portrait of his family, a bit torn in places but still well enough intact. Percy raises his hand and places it on the painting then balls his hand into a fist, looking ready to punch something, his gaze then suddenly shifts and meets with yours. The both of you just stare at each other in a tense feeling silence.

"I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to interrupt anything. I’ll just take my leave." You give a slight bow of your head and prepare to turn and leave, stopping when you feel a light grip on your wrist. Turning to face him again you can see that Percy himself wasn’t sure why he just stopped you, his expression too had completely changed from the stone faced man you knew to a broken boy who never got to truly mourn his family. There was only one thing you could think of doing to help as you silently offer your shoulder for him feeling slightly shocked when he actually accepts it, releasing his grip on your wrist to embrace you in this rare moment of solitude and vulnerability between the two of you. Retuning the embrace you stay in place for as long as he needed, letting a more comfortable silence now ease into the room.

"I see why everyone’s easily grown quite comfortable in you’re presents." He finally says with a small chuckle and releasing his grip on you.

"Call it a blessing or curse if you wish but I’m always happy to help." You subtly try and joke, giving a closed-eye smile and unconsciously let out a small purr.

"Perhaps I misjudged you in the past, like everyone else, I do hope we can look past that and start again properly." He sounded hopeful and you were happy to oblige.

"It would be my pleasure."

Scanlan

Always the ever comical one, Scanlan never really felt the need to share much about his personal life openly to anyone but that didn’t mean it wasn’t there. You knew this full well but didn’t feel the need to pressure him into admitting anything, you didn’t have to seeing as he sorta did it to himself unintentionally when he decided to splay himself onto your lap much to your own confusion. Oh well, at least he was still wearing pants this time.

"You know you keep staring at me like you know something." He starts, using his arms to act as a headrest.

"I’m sorry, I didn’t realize. I don’t mean to cause you any discomfort." You apologize before refocusing on the book in your hands. Silence washes in, he stays laying across your lap the entire time before the quiet gets to be too much for him.

"If you really do have something to say, just say it already!" He sounded irritated making you look away from your book once more to stare at him. "See, that’s what I mean! You look like you have something to say so say it and get it over with!" You remain silent and his expression shifts to slight regret. "Uhh… did you have something to say?" He finally questions. You let out a quiet sigh.

"Well that depends," you pause a second and he stares up at you expectantly. "Was there something you wanted to hear?"

"Wait, what?" He shakes his head in confusion before continuing. "No, of course not. I don’t need to hear anything because everything’s just fine. That's it! That’s all it is and that’s all it’ll be. Nobody really cares, I’m just the funny man who plays songs and makes jokes. Why should anyone ask about him or who his mother was before they were killed in front of him by damn goblins! Why would they, it doesn’t matter that’s not why I’m here! It doesn’t matter!… I… I don’t matter." You listen in silence as he goes on, letting his true feelings out alongside some tears, but you listened to all of it until he finally ran out of words letting out small puffs of air.

"What was your mother's name?" He jumps in surprise, somehow having forgotten he was still sitting in your lap and stares up at you, seeing your calm patient eyes stare back.

"Ummm, heh." He gives a halfhearted chuckle while wiping away some tears. "Juniper. Her name was Juniper."

"She sounds like she was a lovely woman, I am terribly sorry for your lose." You place a hand over your heart, bowing your head slightly as a sign of respect.

"She was." He stares off a little before looking back at you with a slightly nervous expression. "So uhhh, you’re not planning on sharing this conversation with anyone else… are you?" You give a light shake of your head.

"Not unless you want me to."

"No no, absolutely not." He jumps in quickly, you give a nod in understanding. "Anyways, I for one have had enough of whatever that was… but uhhh, thank you… for being the first to listen." He gives almost a sigh of relief when he says this, like a large weight had finally been lifted.

"It's my pleasure."

ok so when I say "the extent to which I've fleshed out the QT GBBO AU in my head is getting to be embarrassing," I truly and deeply mean it, please enjoy 1,900 words of utter ridiculousness.

first, our competitors:

Legarus - performs so poorly that viewers are a bit confused how he got on the show in the first place, a la Jamie (series 10) or that one guy who made a lime and chocolate cake in the first week.

Chloe - nice flavors and good ideas for decorations, but pretty sloppy. was up for elimination in the first week but came back with a great showstopper.

Melheret - good but not as good as he thinks he is (hence his bread week elimination because of sloppy technique), heavy-handed with the alcohol flavoring

Agape - solid competitor, not flashy but tasty + pretty results. I haven't worked out exact week-by-week themes (that would indeed be Too Much) but I imagine this is something like "Dairy" or "Caramel" or "Vegan," some particular element she just happens to not be strong on. viewers are disappointed by her early elimination

Teleus - Dad contestant. brings in a bunch of weird pans and gadgets he made up himself, does pretty well until it comes to Fiddly Foreign Foods he doesn't know (probably eliminated in French or Patisserie week)

Laela - typically has good flavors and pretty designs but technical knowledge is a bit lacking, so there are usually some flaws in the execution and she's often in the bottom half of technicals

Phresine - Grandma contestant. nails the classics but ultimately isn't creative enough to make it further.

Magus - the "Ian (series 6)" flavor of Dad contestant, often brings in foraged ingredients or eggs from his own chickens or whatnot and revives old recipes/flavor combinations no one else knows about. one week, some of those turn out to just be too weird, leading to his elimination.

Sophos - pretty elaborate decorations and good flavors (on the border of classic and new), but he tends to try a million different embellishments on everything and struggles with timing, occasionally to the detriment of technique.

Kamet - always has really interesting and different flavors and tends to do well in technicals especially, assuming he doesn't get overwhelmed. which is... an assumption (Finalist)

Costis - leans towards classic and indulgent flavors, although sometimes a bit sloppy--the kind of contestant where the judges look at his dishes and say "it's a bit of a mess" and then Paul Hollywood starts laughing because it still tastes delicious (Finalist)

Irene - absolutely stunning visually, queen of the technicals, occasionally gets the "style over substance" warning (Winner)

I've gone back and forth on whether Eugenides should be in it but ultimately I decided no because I wanted to maintain a pre-show relationship between Laela + Kamet (I thought otherwise at first but then I realized I hadn't left Kamet any longterm friends or family for his finalist video and that's depressing af) and Irene and Sophos which to my knowledge hasn't happened once on the show so far? so having a married couple on top of that seems like it would be a stretch, and also then I think I'd need to make Eugenides the winner on principle and you know what? he can stand to be second fiddle to his wife for a little bit. My alternate backstory for him is that he was actually the winner of MasterChef one year (good with knives), so in the first episode Irene's first little chat to camera is something like "my husband's been bugging me for years to try out and I keep telling him he's got a skewed perspective on cooking competitions, finally I applied just to shut him up... and here we are." Her little video introduction is about how baking is a stress relief from her bigshot job. Her decorations tend to be abstract and gorgeous rather than cutesy.

Kamet, likewise, was nagged into applying by Laela, but she very cleverly framed it as she wanted to apply and wanted him to do it to for moral support. both were confident the other would get in and surprised that they did themselves. This is one of those series where everyone's friendships are immediate and obvious and super adorable (cast of series 10 my beloved...), and in particular these two are holding hands in episode 1. Laela's deep blue robe from TaT sticks in my head for whatever reason so I imagine her making an elaborate blue peacock cake or something one week that wins her star baker. somebody always does a peacock something and it's always impressiev.

Phresine is cool as a cucumber under pressure, always has lovely things to say about everyone else's bakes, and is the go-to last-minute helper because she usually comes in under the time. Irene starts out similar but as the weeks go by she starts to feel the pressure a bit more and cuts it a bit close. Sophos is the worst on timings, and mentions his wife at least once an episode. (I also played with him being single on the show and meeting Helen later through Irene and Eugenides, but this idea is too cute to pass up tbh.) Teleus lives with Relius, a fact that isn't mentioned until a few weeks in when he comments that Relius likes a recipe or gave him an idea for a flavor or something (Relius does not bake himself but will happily sample practice bakes), to the surprised delight of every viewer whose favorite contestant is the oldest gay in any given series (me, me, that person is me).

Costis tends to use a lot of chocolate and, as I said, pretty "classic" flavors--one of those people who makes a full English savory bake at some point. He's usually in the top half of the competition but doesn't get the top until one of the later weeks in the competition, which is a Honey themed week, and he absolutely nails it. The delicate decorations of his honey nut cakes and his use of honeycomb are particularly praised and that's the week he gets star baker. One of those bakers who flirts with elimination the first few weeks but noticeably improves over the course of the show.

My most, like, plot-y ideas are about Kamet (SHOCKER). I imagine he was born in Setra (I usually make Setra a non-autonomous region in my AUs) but arrived in Britain as a child due to [Unspecified Crisis] and ended up with foster dad Jeffa, who was roughly from the same region but not Setra itself; whenever Kamet wanted Setran food as a kid, Jeffa would take him to the library to find recipes and that was what sparked his love of baking. He's well-read on the subject and knows about foods from a lot of different cultures, so he's usually heard of the technical challenges even if he hasn't made or eaten them. He does a lot of fusion flavors, and is ALL ABOUT bread week.

I don't usually make the his-relationship-with-Nahuseresh-is-romantic leap in modern AUs but I think it works for this one because of the nature of the format--Nahuseresh doesn't actually appear on camera but is alluded to once or twice, ends up being Very Displeased that Kamet is doing something for himself, and during the week following Laela's elimination they have the fight that makes Kamet realizes this is actually a terrible relationship and he needs to leave now. He calls Laela to let her know what's up and mentions that, since he'll need to stay in a motel and has presumbly lost his job as a secretary (yeah working for your boyfriend is Bad, he's realized that now), he's going to have to drop out of the show. Laela, despite living in a studio flat without room to host him, immediately thinks "um fuck that" and calls Costis, and within an hour Costis and Aris and a few rugby buddies have moved all of Kamet's things into Costis and Aris's flat, where Costis insists that he'll squeeze into Aris's room (they've shared before, it's fine) and that Kamet gets first dibs on the kitchen for all bake off practices.

None of them actually reveal any of this to the show's producers. Kamet gets a little overwhelmed the following week and nearly walks away from the tent, but Costis jumps in to keep his bake from being ruined, and some soothing words from Irene + the hosts calm him down and he returns to finish. The only mention of the Drama comes in the finale, during the longer video clips they do on each of the contestants. Kamet is deliberately vague about the details of the situation, but Aris shows up in both Costis's and Kamet's videos and references the fact that having TWO flatmates in the bake off is a bit difficult because they only have a standard size kitchen, so he hasn't cooked for himself in a month and has been living off cake and savory breads. one of the hosts talks to Kamet in the tent after that clip is shown and he still won't talk about it in more detail, but says that he wanted to tell people so they could appreciate why Costis hasn't practiced as much the last few weeks (the judges scolded him for winging it a couple of times), and admits that he totally copied some of Costis's techniques for honey week based on watching him at home.

I imagine the finale task is something like an illusion cake--probably with a bunch of additional required elements because the show has been going bonkers with the finale showstoppers in the newer seasons--and Irene wins with a jewelry box containing, among other things, ruby earrings made out of candy. Kamet does a stepwell, and Costis does something architectural (I was thinking castle but something visibly Greek-ish so maybe a temple or a megaron? idk). Irene wins but they're all BFFs and that's obvious, so everyone's delighted for her. The little montage at the end reveals that Irene + Gen are expecting twins, that everybody hangs out all the time, and that Costis + co recently helped Kamet move into his own flat where he's now working on a novel (Immakuk and Ennikar inspired, obvi, leaning heavily on the honey-shared-on-the-road thing and including some recipes that actually work in the narration, albeit still written in an ancient-novel-like-way).

[Obviously not part of the show, but when Kamet mentions that it's time for him to look for his own place, Costis tries to v awkwardly invite him to stay forever and Kamet is like "nope I've got to try this on my own but yes we will go on a date once I've moved out and see how it goes from there."]

[This is so far beyond the scope of the show but also several of them go on to have more baking-related careers and have active social media presences and at one point they're all hanging out and Eugenides pulls out a camera and demands they all produce baking pick-up lines. Teleus refuses and also doesn't believe anyone knows baking pick-up lines off the top of their head or could make them up on the spot. Sophos sort of proves him right by coming up with "you're the apple of my pie," which Eugenides instantly mocks because Sophos's three greatest loves are baking, Helen, and poetry, and that's the best he can do? Helen comes up with "I like my cake the way I like my men--rich, sweet, and bright red," to which Sophos blushes on cue. Irene's is "when I'm with you, I feel like chocolate heated to 50 degrees--I struggle to maintain my temper." Eugenides protests this is more like an anti-pickup line. Irene insists this is the most accurate marriage-related baking pun anyone could ever come up with.

[Laela's is "You and I are like custard--I hope we never split." Kamet's is "You remind me of bread, because I knead you." Costis freezes for a minute and finally comes up with "Fancy a cream horn?" which produces a lot of giggling and makes Kamet slap his arm in such a way that, hen Eugenides posts this video to instagram, fans of the show all go WAIT ARE THEY DATING NOW] [by this point, yes they are] [I didn't even have to google baking pickup lines for this, guys, I legit came up with them on my own, please clap.]

Hey it’s been a hot minute since I’ve done one of these taglist updates sdfjksldfjsfd. Sorry for the lack of consistent content! Now that summer’s come I’ll be making a lot more progress.

Overall stats:

60 pages (I’m writing in default Microsoft Word settings so idk how much that would be as a published formatted Thing)

30K words

5 page and ~3000 word net increase from the first draft.

About 1/4th of the way through the plot, so I’m projecting this book is going to be about 120K by the time I’m done with this edit. That’s a litttttle on the long side for a conventional YA fantasy novel, but it’s not ridiculously long either. We’ll see how much gets trimmed in the line edits

“That’s enough!” Aimon repeated. “We’ve had enough trouble tonight without bickering amongst ourselves. While Enne is right, I think it’s time we heard the rest of Luca and Grace’s story.” He leveled a serious look at his son, who laid his head in his arms on the table. “What were you thinking when you decided to pit yourself against 30 armed men?”

“We couldn’t just stand there when we could stop it,” Luca said, his voice half sob, half whisper. “We had to help. People were helpless, and trapped, and falling dead all around us and we had to do something. We were the only ones who could do something.” Now he lifted his head to look at his parents.

“And we did. After I jumped in, Grace took the brunt of the second blow. She probably saved hundreds of people. Maybe I didn’t hurt the anarchists, but I distracted them long enough for troops to arrive and scare them away. Long enough that they couldn’t hurt everyone,” His voice was desperate.

He pleaded his case to Enne and his parents, but he also pleaded with himself to believe it. He needed to believe that his reckless, stupid decision had done some good. His voice still caught, but it was more steady when he spoke again, “What happened was… tragic, and I didn’t have a plan when I jumped into the arena besides surviving long enough to let other people get out. I wish I could have done more. But I don’t regret what I did.”

Anda rubbed at her temples, trying to banish a growing headache. “You two are going to be the death of me. What am I going to do with you?”

Luca sighed. “Honestly? A hug would be nice right now.”

His mother relented and embraced her son. When she pulled away from him, her eyes were wet, and she gave him a kiss on the forehead before doing the same for Grace. “You’re both such brave children. Impulsive, and reckless, yes. But I’m so so proud of you.”

Changes and Commentary

This chapter was pretty good as it was! I refined some of the conversations because the dialogue was stilted earlier, but the pacing and place in the plot were both solid

I reworked some of Acheran’s actions to make him less OOC. I’m really happy with how his character has evolved as I’ve grown more confident writing him. I’m not someone who entirely believes the characters are Real and let me tell their story and tell me what to do, but he’s gradually become his own person which is really cool His parts feel a lot more natural and I can visualize his mannerisms and recognize his voice a lot more easily now.

I’m also really happy with how the family and sibling dynamic reads in this chapter. I (unfortunately) know from firsthand experience what it’s like to deal with a crisis (though nothing like this), but I can still write what I know and convey those emotions through the characters. They’re not a perfect family, but they are ultimately a good family and their arguments are because they love each other. That’s not something I see often in fiction, and I hope the Laine family is a good example and welcome change of pace for my readers

rewatched sga 1x04 thirty-eight minutes! thoughts under the cut!

this is an episode i already rewatched very recently, when i was wildly hopping back and forth through the show (but mostly in seasons 2-5), but i’ll watch it again now for context.

love the start of this episode, which is so in the middle of the action i always have a second of “wait, did i skip something?”

teyla correctly guesses that the bug that’s on john’s neck is related to the wraith! SHE is the one that makes the connection because SHE is the one that knows the most about this universe! THIS IS WHAT I’M TALKING ABOUT when i say that the expedition needs the athosians, oof.

also though, it’s both really great to see that teyla is (especially here, early on) so often the one with very important key insights that (help to) solve the expedition’s problem of the week, and honestly a little sad, because the earth humans just. don’t seem to learn from that to respect the athosians a little more, maybe, mayhaps. they respect teyla, yes, but (and i’m getting ahead of myself a little here because i’m expanding on bits of this after i’ve also already watched the next episode, which deals with the earth vs. athosian clash a lot) they kind of... only seem to take from all of her extremely valuable contributions that she as an individual can be an asset to them, instead of viewing it in a broader context. (but yeah, definitely getting ahead of myself here.)

this episode has a very cool format!! the jumping back and forth!! the bits of information we’re fed through people starting to give long explanations and then being cut off, making us puzzle it all together a little!!

throughout the entire ordeal rodney keeps being distracted by what is happening with john and that’s good on every level. just makes sense, because they’re in a tiny space, and it’s also potentially shippy, and it’s also just a sign that rodney most certainly does care - though at the same time also one of how early on this all still is, because i do feel rodney ends up getting better at working through a crisis. (though it’s also like. very often john who keeps rodney focused, so in that context it makes sense rodney keeps getting distracted if john is, uh, otherwise occupied. with, like, dying.)

teyla is wearing earth gear in this episode and i think that’s the first time we see that? but she does seem to have her own shirt under the jacket, which, idk, feels interesting. she’s putting on this uniform over her pegasus identity.

the elizabeth vs. halling bits where she denies his request for last rites for teyla (that’s not just coming from him, but from a group of athosians), even though the radio is totally free so they could have talked to teyla without obstructing the earth efforts at that moment... are always so uncomfortable to me. elizabeth says she doesn't want to make the people on the ship think they will die because earth people value life and will keep trying to save everyone, etc etc, and that’s fine but it’s. such a sad way for this all to go down. i love elizabeth most of the time but these bits are most definitely not my favorites - like, she’s in love with the ancients but she doesn’t have enough respect for the living pegasus culture to find a way to make this work for everyone. i never fully know if i think this is an interesting flaw in her character or if i just want to blame it on the writers, who have a certain perspective that elizabeth is now an unfortunate mouthpiece for.

(and getting ahead of myself again here, but then later after the rescue efforts paid off there’s THAT NOD she gives halling across the room and that’s just fdjkfd nahhhh. you did not earn that nod. you don’t have some cool understanding now, you were just disrespectful to him and his culture and his religion and this, now, feels a hair’s breadth from gloating over how your perspective was right all along, even though this outcome!!! does not mean!!! that it couldn’t have ended differently!!! and i do think elizabeth means well and is not trying to be a dick, but that doesn’t mean she isn’t. i have extremely mixed feelings about all of this.)

for a lighter thought, markham and stackhouse’s biggest roles in sga are the episode that they spend being dematerialized and i think that’s very iconic of them.

at one point john is talking to carson and is like “i need to move to help rodney with the mechanical problem!” and that’s so very john of him. he’s actively at death’s door and still doing his level best to be a control freak about a different life-threatening problem.

i PROMISE i’m not trying to rag on elizabeth (i do like her!!! when she’s not in this episode), but this quote, when she’s making a point to kavanaugh: “we are cut off from earth, which makes atlantis almost like a colony, doesn't it? (...) well i'm governor of that colony.” it’s just laden with so, so, so much oof.

anyway, this episode has a lot of team!!! gate team one!!! team cooperation!!! at some point ford is updating atlantis on the status in the jumper and he’s like “doctor mckay- [pointed pause in which he looks at rodney] doctor mckay is still hopeful he can come up with a solution” and then rodney GETS BACK TO WORK and that’s good, i like a lot of things about that and what it says about how these characters and this team works.

john comes up with the solution to his own near death experience, which is also very john of him. bonus points for the plan being one in which john dies. sets a trend for a surprising amount of the rest of the show, even though he doesn’t usually actually end up dead for a little bit when those plans are carried out, like he does here.

grodin, gosh, he’s so present in these early episodes, and it makes me sad that he’s one of those characters that just end up fading away eventually.

john, telling everyone what he was supposedly going to say when he was about to die: “take care of each other.” rodney, a little smug: “and indeed we did.” fdjkfd these lonely men are still adjusting to having a family, but sometimes they are very :D about it and that’s very cute.
